travel deals cyber monday 2020
  • Due to COVID-19, the travel industry has been upended and the landscape continues to shift.
  • Hotels, booking sites, and tour operators are still offering significant savings for Cyber Monday 2020 and Travel Tuesday 2020 (December 1).
  • However, with the ongoing pandemic, many people aren't sure if travel is safe right now, or when they will be able to safely vacation again.
  • With that in mind, we found the best Cyber Monday travel deals for domestic locations, all with flexible booking dates through 2021 and beyond.

Hotels, tour operators, booking sites, and airlines have long taken part in Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales, with steep discounts on rooms and vacation packages often emerging. And, Travel Tuesday has even grown into its own deal day just for the travel industry, when extra vacation savings pop up directly after Cyber Monday.

Due to COVID-19, travel looks entirely different this year. With the ongoing pandemic and with many states currently seeing a large spike in cases, many are left wondering if travel is safe at all right now. And while travel deals are still happening this year, you may be unsure if it's worth taking advantage of them since when we can safely board planes and jet off to far-flung locales is an ever-moving target.

With that in mind, we searched for the best Cyber Monday travel deals for domestic destinations. Additionally, all of the offers featured include flexible booking dates through the end of 2021 and beyond, so you won't be locked into potentially risky dates or left wondering how to cancel and get your money back.

If you are planning any upcoming travel, it's vital to keep in mind that while there are some promising options on the horizon, there is still no vaccine, and therefore no guarantee of safety right now. We always recommend following CDC guidelines, practicing safe social distancing, wearing masks in public areas, and washing hands frequently. Additionally, it's important to assess your own risk factors, and take extra safety precautions if you're traveling to or from a current hotspot area.

It's the most beautiful time of the year at the White House.

The West Wing, East Wing, and every room in-between are decked out in elaborate decorations to celebrate the holidays.

On November 23, first lady Melania welcomed the official, 18 1/2-foot tall White House Christmas tree as it arrived from West Virginia. As is tradition, the decorations at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. were revealed on November 30, the Monday after Thanksgiving.

Here's a look back at presidential Christmas celebrations, going all the way back to the 1800s.

When does Target's Cyber Monday 2020 sale begin?

Target's Cyber Monday sale is going on now, through the end of November 30.

What is the difference between Cyber Monday and Black Friday?

Between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Target will offer both deep and short-lived discounts with one main difference: Cyber Monday sales will only be available online. If you'd prefer to grab the savings in-store, then Black Friday may be the better shopping holiday for you. Additionally, Target is running Black Friday deals all month long.

What should I buy from Target during Cyber Monday?

Target has exclusive deals on home goods, fitness equipment, and robot vacuums, among other things. It also has great specials that match competitor pricing on headphones, laptops, gaming consoles, smart home gear, small kitchen appliances, and vacuums.

Can I make returns of what I bought on Cyber Monday at Target?

Target, along with other major retailers, have generous return policies provided you have the receipt. If not, or you received something as a gift, you'll most likely get store credit. Return policies vary from store to store, and there are exceptions on select products. Check out our guide on how to make a return for online purchases.

A few stand-out deals we've seen: a Tranquility 12-pound weighted blanket for less than $30, queen and king hypoallergenic comforters for $200 off, Total Gym's Apex G5 all-in-one fitness system for under $500, a versatile water-filled training ball that acts as a kettlebell or medicine ball from Surge Balance, and an Ecovacs two-in-one robot vacuum-and-mop exclusively at Target and for $180 off.

What is Target Circle?

For shopping benefits like exclusive deals, coupons, and 1% earnings on all purchases, joining Target Circle is a must. It's free to do so and if you're planning to shop from Target at all this Cyber Monday, the savings will really rack up across your purchases.

What benefits do REDcard holders get during Cyber Monday?

Target REDcard holders get an extra 5% off all purchases year-round, but if you're planning to go on a shopping spree this Cyber Monday, that savings can really add up. Additionally, cardholders get free shipping on all online purchases with no purchase minimum required.

  • The Kohl's Cyber Monday 2020 sale is running now through December 2, featuring deals on all kinds of product categories, from electronics and toys to small appliances and fitness gear.
  • The retailer is also running its famous Kohl's Cash promotion, where you'll get $15 for every $50 you spend.
  • We're keeping an eye on the sale and rounding up the best deals we can find.
  • To help you make the best of the sale, we're also including FAQs at the very bottom of this page.
  • Check out our roundup of the best Cyber Monday deals from a whole bunch of retailers, not just Kohl's.
Table of Contents: Masthead Sticky

Cyber Monday can often be a less-than-thrilling follow-up to Black Friday, but one retailer notorious for its excellent Cyber Monday deals is Kohl's.

This Cyber Monday at Kohl's, you'll find discounts on tech, cookware, fitness gear, home goods, and more. Highlights this year are big savings on small appliances, 50% off bedding and decor, and up to 30% off select Kitchenaid small appliances and accessories.

Perhaps the best feature of Kohl's Cyber Monday sale is its Kohl's Cash promotion, which includes a $15 future credit for every $50 you spend. That means you can buy those holiday gifts now, and then do a little shopping for yourself before December 9 when the Kohl's Cash expires.

Some items on the site are further reduced with the promo code "YOUGET20" (applicable at checkout). There's also a promotion for 20% off jewelry with the code "SPARKLE20" and 10% off watches with code "WATCHES10". Or, if you're willing to open up a Kohl's credit card, you can save 35% on almost any purchase once you're approved.

We'll continue to update this list as the retailer releases more bargains.

Shop all Cyber Monday deals at Kohl's here.

Best Kohl's Cyber Monday 2020 deals:

Blender Combo (medium, Preferred: Kohl's)

Charge 4 (medium, Preferred: Kohl's)CBK110P1 Automatic Breadmaker (medium, Preferred: Kohl's)Sonicare DiamondClean Classic Rechargeable Electric Toothbrush (medium, Preferred: Kohl's)
Men's Sherpa Trucker Jacket (medium, Preferred: Kohl's)

The Google Nest smart doorbell deal is also available at Best Buy, but, as we mentioned, the Kohl's cash you'll get gives the above deal the edge.

How do we choose the best deals from Kohl's?

  • The products we choose must meet our coverage standards and come from brands we've tested and trust.
  • We compare the prices against Amazon, Target, Walmart, and other retailers. The deals we include are the same or better (not including promotional discounts from using certain credit cards).
  • We consider products' price histories to evaluate how significant the savings are.

When is Cyber Monday 2020?

Cyber Monday 2020 falls on November 30. Deals often start promptly at 12:00 a.m. CT. Unlike Black Friday, Cyber Monday sales are typically only available online, while some Black Friday discounts are available in stores.

Can I order online and pick up in a Kohl's store?

Yes. Kohl's is now offering curbside pickup because of the coronavirus pandemic. Certain products can be purchased online and delivered at the store's curb two hours later. More products are also available online to be shipped to your home.

What should I buy from Kohl's during Cyber Monday?

Kohl's has a wide range of products, so expect to find deals in every category, including bakeware, jewelry, shoes, gaming, kitchen appliances, beauty, toys, and more.

While Kohl's has deals on items like towels, boots, and pajamas, don't forget about its other sections. For last year's Black Friday event, Kohl's had deals on an Xbox One S bundle, Roombas, Beats headphones, and Instant Pots. Expect similar deals to extend to Cyber Monday this year.

Should I enroll in Kohl's Rewards?

Kohl's Rewards is a free program that gives members 5% Kohl's Cash every day (not just during promotional events) on all purchases. Members also get additional rewards, like a birthday gift.

The Kohl's Cash you receive through the rewards program becomes available on the first day of the following month, and you have 30 days to use it. If you earn a lot of Kohl's Cash on Cyber Monday, it should be available on December 1. Unless you're shopping at Kohl's again before Christmas, however, you'll lose that bonus cash at the end of the year.

What is Kohl's Cash?

Even non-Kohl's Rewards members receive $10 of Kohl's Cash for every $50 they spend during promotional events, including Cyber Monday 2020. Kohl's Cash is a bit like a coupon you can use on future purchases. Kohl's Cash does expire, and the amount of time you have to use it can vary.

For Cyber Monday purchases, you'll receive an email with your Kohl's Cash, and you'll be able to use it on any purchases before its expiration date. The limit on Kohl's Cash for a single purchase is $1,500.

Which is better, Black Friday or Cyber Monday?

In 2020, there will be less of a contrast between Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Most people will shop online to avoid crowds, and retailers are less likely to offer in-store-only deals.

The good news is that Kohl's has a pretty generous return policy, so you can always take back your purchase if you find a better deal elsewhere. Usually, Kohl's has a 30-day return window for electronics, but because so many people give these items as gifts, it's extended until January 31, 2021.

Trump and his allies have won zero out at least 26 lawsuits they've filed since Election Day

donald trump debate
President Donald Trump.
  • President Donald Trump's campaign and Republican officials have filed more than two dozen lawsuits since Election Day in an effort to contest the results of the 2020 election.
  • The campaign filed lawsuits and motions to intervene in cases in swing states Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, and Pennsylvania.
  • They've notched zero victories, 19 cases where they've withdrawn or lost, and have seven cases pending.
  • Scroll down for a list of lawsuits the Trump campaign and Republicans have filed and where they stand.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Faced with the prospect of losing to a man he spent months hammering as corrupt, doddering, and mentally deficient, President Donald Trump is going on offense, spreading lies and conspiracy theories about a "rigged" election marred by "major fraud" from Democrats.

He's alternated between demanding that some states stop counting ballots, which he doesn't have the power to do, and saying that others should keep counting, which they were doing anyway.

To that end, the Trump campaign and other Republican groups have mounted at least 26 legal challenges since Election Day.

They've won zero.

The lawsuits argue that states and counties have violated election laws, playing into Trump's political strategy to discredit the results of the 2020 election that President-elect Joe Biden won.

Republicans have filed the lawsuits in local, state, and federal courts in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, and Pennsylvania — all states that Biden won or is projected to win, according to Decision Desk HQ data published by Insider.

The Trump campaign initially had a single win, when a Pennsylvania judge ruled on November 12 that first-time voters were supposed to confirm their IDs with county boards of election by November 9, rather than November 12. The decision opened the door to disqualify the ballots of people who didn't verify their IDs in time. But the state Supreme Court later overturned that decision.

That leaves Trump and other Republicans with at least 19 cases they have withdrawn or lost, and seven that are still pending.

rudy giuliani
Attorney for the President, Rudy Giuliani, speaks about election lawsuits at a news conference in the parking lot of a landscaping company on November 7, 2020 in Philadelphia.

Here's a list of the lawsuits and where they stand

Pennsylvania — 10 losses, 2 pending

  • The Trump campaign and the Republican National Committee filed a lawsuit asking a state appeals court to reject the Pennsylvania secretary of state's announcement that registered voters had until November 12 to provide proof of identity for mail-in ballots. Republicans believe the deadline should be November 9. This is the one case that Trump won, before the state Supreme Court overturned the lower court decision.
  • In a wide-ranging federal lawsuit, the Trump campaign sued over alleged irregularities in the way ballots were counted throughout the state. They've argued that 14,000 votes should be thrown out. The campaign submitted a revised version of the lawsuit days later that retracted many of its original allegations. A judge threw out the case, saying Trump's lawyers presented the court "with strained legal arguments without merit and speculative accusations, unpaid in the operative complaint and unsupported by evidence." An appeal of the case also failed.
  • Another federal lawsuit brought by Republicans sought to delay the deadline for ballot requests. The judge rejected it.
  • A third federal lawsuit sought to stop the Montgomery County Board of Elections from allowing voters to "cure" their ballots — a process that allows people to fix clerical errors on their ballots to make sure their votes count. Republicans abandoned the lawsuit and withdrew from the case.
  • The campaign sued in yet another federal case to stop Philadelphia County from counting votes without Republicans present. The judge dismissed the case after Trump's lawyers said Republican election watchers were, in fact, present. The Trump campaign then appealed the decision in an attempt to re-count a few thousand ballots. A judge hasn't yet made a decision on the appeal.
  • In another Montgomery County case, this one filed in a local court, Trump's lawyers sought to stop the county from counting mail-in ballots. The lawsuit is still pending, but the lawyers withdrew from the case.
  • A lawsuit in Bucks County filed by Republican congressional candidate Kathy Barnette on Election Day made a technical challenge on the county's method of organizing ballots before counting them. She withdrew the case two days later and lost the election.
  • The Trump campaign appealed that Bucks County case soon afterward, but a judge rejected it and pointed out in his ruling that fraud wasn't an issue.
  • In a state court, Republicans challenged an instruction from the Secretary of State's office regarding provisional ballots. A state appellate court judge dismissed the request but ordered the secretary of state to segregate provisional ballots in case their validity becomes contested.
  • Local Republicans sought to stop Northampton County from revealing the identities of people whose ballots were canceled and lost the case.
  • A group of Pennsylvania Republicans lost at the state Supreme Court with a lawsuit trying to invalidate absentee voting after the voting period already ended, and trying to block the certification of election results.
  • The Trump campaign filed a motion to intervene in a Supreme Court case brought by Republicans that centers on the deadline by which Pennsylvania officials are allowed to receive ballots. Pennsylvania's Supreme Court ruled that officials could receive ballots until November 6 as long as they are postmarked by Election Day. Republicans appealed the decision to the high court, which was deadlocked at 4-4 because Justice Amy Coney Barrett did not participate, leaving the lower court's ruling in place. The Supreme Court signaled it could hear the case again but has not yet granted the request to intervene.

Nevada — 3 losses, one pending

  • The Trump campaign filed a lawsuit requesting that ballots stop being counted in the state over concerns about signature-matching technology and election observers' claims that they weren't being allowed to watch ballots being processed closely enough. The Nevada Supreme Court denied the request.
  • The Trump campaign and the RNC filed a lawsuit in state court asking to stop ballot counting in Clark County — a heavily Democratic area — until GOP officials could observe the process. A district judge rejected the request on the grounds that the plaintiffs did not have evidence to back up their allegations. Republicans appealed the case to the Nevada Supreme Court, which said on November 5 that the campaign and Republican officials had reached a settlement that allowed expanded ballot observation. They later withdrew the case.
  • A group of Republicans dropped a lawsuit in Clark County challenging mail-in ballots, including those sent by members of the military.
  • The Trump campaign filed a different lawsuit in Carson City District Court alleging multiple irregularities that the campaign claimed, without providing specific evidence, would be enough to overturn the election results in Nevada and flip the state to Trump.

Georgia — 2 losses, one pending

  • A judge in Chatham County denied the Trump campaign's request to toss out 53 ballots that a GOP poll watcher said arrived after polls closed at 7 p.m. on November 3. The Washington Post reported that the poll watcher presented no evidence in court that the ballots came in late and that county officials testified that they were received in time.
  • Republican elector Lin Wood, whose attorney also represents the Trump campaign, sued to stop vote certification because. He argued that because the Georgia Secretary of State agreed to allow signature matching on ballots — a measure designed to prevent voter fraud — eight months before the election, his rights as an individual voter had been infringed upon. A state judge dismissed the case, saying the arguments have "no basis in fact and law."
  • Sidney Powell, who was kicked off of Trump's legal team after spreading numerous conspiracy theories about election fraud, filed a federal lawsuit in Georgia alleging widespread election fraud. A judge hasn't yet decided on the case.

Michigan — 4 losses, one pending

Arizona — 2 losses

  • The Trump campaign joined a lawsuit brought by two Republicans in Maricopa County claiming that a substantial number of GOP ballots were invalidated because voters used Sharpies to fill in their choices. There is no evidence that using Sharpies leads to issues with scanning ballots, and, in fact, officials have said using Sharpies is preferred. The Post also reported that the Maricopa County attorney's office said no ballots were rejected and that if they are, voters have an opportunity to cast another one. A Republican-aligned group abandoned the legal fight after Maricopa County officials challenged the factual basis for the lawsuit, and the Trump campaign lost the fight soon afterward.
  • The Trump campaign filed a lawsuit in state court alleging that Maricopa County was improperly rejecting ballots cast by some voters. The lawsuit was dismissed after an audit found no problems with the votes.

Wisconsin — 2 pending

  • Wisconsin Voters Alliance, a right-wing group, sued the state elections commission and asked the state Supreme Court to throw out votes and have the Republican-controlled state legislature select the electoral college winner themselves.
  • Another lawsuit backed by the Republican-aligned Amos Center for Justice and Liberty argued that the use of ballot drop-boxes was illegal. It also asked that the state Supreme Court should throw out every vote cast and have the GOP legislature select the state's electoral votes.

Key cases and Supreme Court rulings before Election Day

Pennsylvania

In Pennsylvania, the state Supreme Court ruled that election officials could receive mail-in ballots until November 6 as long as they are postmarked by Election Day. Republicans requested an immediate stay from the US Supreme Court that would have blocked the state Supreme Court's ruling.

But the US Supreme Court was deadlocked at 4-4, leaving the lower court's ruling in place. Justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, Clarence Thomas, and Samuel Alito voted to grant Republicans' request, while Chief Justice John Roberts, and Justices Stephen Breyer, Elena Kagan, and Sonia Sotomayor dissented.

Justice Amy Coney Barrett declined to participate in the case "because of the need for a prompt resolution of it and because she has not had time to fully review the parties' filings," the court said in a statement. However, Barrett has not recused herself, meaning she could cast a decisive fifth vote when the Supreme Court takes up the case again.

North Carolina

In a similar case brought by Republicans in North Carolina, the Supreme Court ruled that ballots received up to nine days after November 3 could be counted as long as they are postmarked by Election Day.

The decision came after the Trump campaign and Republicans asked in two separate cases for the high court to put back in place a June statute from the state's Republican-controlled Legislature that would have allowed ballots to be counted only if they were received up to three days — not nine — after Election Day.

Five justices — Roberts, Kavanaugh, Breyer, Kagan, and Sotomayor — ruled against reinstating the statute. Gorsuch, Alito, and Thomas dissented, while Barrett did not participate in the North Carolina case.

Wisconsin

Republicans notched a victory in a case involving the deadline to receive ballots in Wisconsin. The US Supreme Court ruled against reviving an appeals court decision that would have allowed election officials to receive absentee ballots up to six days after Election Day.

The court's five conservative justices — Roberts, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, Thomas, and Alito — ruled against reviving the lower court's ruling, while the three liberals — Breyer, Kagan, and Sotomayor — dissented.

The Wisconsin case made headlines because of Kavanaugh's and Kagan's dueling opinions.

Kavanaugh, a Trump-appointed justice who was confirmed to the high court in 2018, wrote in a concurring opinion that all ballots should be received by Election Day.

"Those States want to avoid the chaos and suspicions of impropriety that can ensue if thousands of absentee ballots flow in after election day and potentially flip the results of an election," he wrote. "And those States also want to be able to definitively announce the results of the election on election night, or as soon as possible thereafter."

Kagan fired back in a sharp dissent, taking issue with Kavanaugh's assertion that the arrival of absentee ballots after Election Day could "flip" the results of the race.

"Justice Kavanaugh alleges that 'suspicions of impropriety' will result if 'absentee ballots flow in after election day and potentially flip the results of an election,'" she wrote. "But there are no results to 'flip' until all valid votes are counted. And nothing could be more 'suspicio[us]' or 'improp[er]' than refusing to tally votes once the clock strikes 12 on election night. To suggest otherwise, especially in these fractious times, is to disserve the electoral process."

Texas

A federal court in Texas and the state's Supreme Court denied two Republican requests to throw out nearly 130,000 ballots that were cast via drive-thru polling sites in Harris County, one of Texas' most heavily Democratic areas.

The Texas Supreme Court rejected a request from Republican candidates and activists to toss the ballots. US District Judge Andrew Hanen, appointed by President George W. Bush, reached the same conclusion and denied the second request from GOP candidates and a right-wing radio host.

Hanen ruled that the plaintiffs did not have the standing to sue and ask that ballots that were legally cast be discounted. However, he ordered the county to set aside the 127,000 ballots in case an appeals court disagreed with him and ultimately threw those votes out.

Twitter app
It's easy to mute other people's fleets so you never have to see them.
  • You can mute fleets on Twitter from a specific user by tapping the down arrow on the fleet and selecting "Mute."
  • Fleets, Twitter's latest feature, are image, video, and text stories that automatically disappear after 24 hours.
  • You can't mute the fleets feature entirely, but you can mute fleets from certain accounts.
  • Visit Business Insider's Tech Reference library for more stories.

Twitter lets you mute all fleets from a specific user, similar to how you can mute someone's tweets. Whether an account is posting offensive content or things you just don't like, the mute feature is a great tool to use to customize your Twitter experience.

In November 2020, Twitter introduced its ephemeral fleets feature, which resembles Snapchat's Snaps or Instagram's Stories. Users can share images, videos, text, and tweets that disappear in 24 hours.

Although you can't mute the fleets feature entirely, you can remove fleets by certain users from the fleet bar on your Twitter app's homepage.

How to mute fleets on Twitter using the mobile app

1. Open the Twitter app on your device. Currently, fleets is only available through the mobile app.

2. Scroll through the fleets bar at the top to find the user or account you wish to mute fleets for.

3. Once you've found the user you want to mute fleets for, press their profile icon to view their fleet.

4. In the fleet, tap the down arrow in the top right corner.

5. In the pop-up menu, select "Mute [user]."

Mute1
Tap "Mute [user]" in the pop-up menu.

6. The next pop-up will ask you to select either "Mute Fleets" or "Mute Tweets and Fleets."

Mute2
Select "Mute Fleets" to mute only the fleets or "Mute Tweets and Fleets" to mute both.

After muting the user, you can select "Undo" from the dropdown menu that appears at the top of your screen to undo the action if you made a mistake.

Mute3
Tap "Undo" in the pop-up if you've made a mistake.

7. Depending on what you selected, the account's fleets will no longer appear in the fleets bar on your homepage. The account you muted will not be notified of this action.

8. To un-mute an account's fleets, go to their profile page, tap the red volume icon beside their profile picture, and then select "Unmute Fleets" from the pop-up screen.

Dow posts best monthly gain since 1987 on continued vaccine optimism

  • US stocks declined on Monday. But that didn't stop the Dow Jones industrial average from rising 11.8% in November, its best monthly gain since January 1987.
  • Investor optimism around a COVID-19 vaccine continued on Monday after Moderna said it would file its vaccine candidate with the FDA for emergency use authorization today.
  • November represented a month filled with vaccine optimism as Pfizer, Moderna, and AstraZeneca all reported positive efficacy data well above the 50% threshold set by the FDA.
  • Watch major indexes update live here.

The Dow Jones industrial average finished November on a down note on Monday, but the index still managed to notch its best monthly in nearly 34 years.

The Dow finished the month having climbed 11.8, well ahead of April's strong 11.1% gain,, but still below the 13.8% monthly gain seen in January 1987.

November's strong rally was mostly driven by continued optimism surrounding a COVID-19 vaccine, as positive phase 3 data from Moderna, Pfizer, and AstraZeneca all surpassed the FDA's set threshold of 50%.

On Monday, Moderna said it would submit vaccine data from its phase 3 trial to the FDA today to be considered for an emergency use authorization. Investors remain optimistic that a successful COVID-19 vaccine will help jump-start a swift reopening of the economy in 2021.

A government watchdog says the Labor Department has been releasing flawed unemployment data — and finds that most states underpaid jobless Americans

Labor Department
The U.S. Department of Labor building is pictured in Washington on Thursday, April 2, 2020.
  • The Labor Department reported false counts of week-to-week jobless benefit claims, and several states underpaid unemployed Americans through a key economic relief program, the Government Accountability Office said Monday.
  • Inconsistent state data, claims backlogs, and potential fraud in the benefits system resulted in "flawed week-to-week comparisons" of jobless claims data, the government watchdog said.
  • Average weekly payments through the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program fell below the poverty line in 29 of the 41 states reporting data, the agency added. While some states made minimum payments first and plan to back-pay remaining totals, it's unclear when the process can be completed.
  • The GAO's report signals the virus's economic fallout may be greater than first thought, and that most states aren't paying out the immediate relief allocated by Congress.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

The Labor Department's weekly tally of unemployment-insurance filings has reflected inaccurate data throughout the pandemic, and jobless Americans are being underpaid through the benefits program, the Government Accountability Office said Monday.

The historic number of unemployed Americans applying for benefits has skewed weekly claims figures for months, the government watchdog said in its report. Inconsistent state data, claims backlogs, and potential fraud in the benefits system has resulted in "flawed week-to-week comparisons of total claims numbers," the GAO added.

Additionally, a program meant to provide benefits to workers who lost their jobs due to the pandemic has been underpaying recipients in most states. Some states paid minimum amounts first and aim to back-pay the rest of recipients' claims once new tax information is taken into account. Still, average weekly payments through the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program in September fell below the poverty line in 29 of 41 states reporting data, the GAO said.

Read more: Cheap stocks just had their best month ever. A Wall Street expert breaks down why their outperformance is bound to continue over the next 4-5 years — and listed 2 bargain stocks to buy to capitalize on the trend.

"The expiration of supplemental payments for UI claimants may mean that some households' income no longer exceeds poverty guidelines," the watchdog said. "In addition, with the scheduled expiration of certain CARES Act benefits in December 2020, PUA claimants who remain unemployed may face additional hardship."

The report details dire missteps in tallying and paying unemployed Americans as the coronavirus crisis rages on. Cases continue to soar higher in the US, and economic indicators suggest the pace of recovery has weakened through the fall as states reinstate partial lockdowns.

Roughly 9.1 million people were receiving PUA benefits in the week ended November 7, more than the number of those receiving regular state benefits. That's up from about 8.7 million in the week ended October 31.

The GAO's discovery that most states have been underpaying PUA recipients signals millions of Americans have endured the pandemic recession with less government aid than allocated by Congress.

PUA and an extension to regular benefits are slated to expire at the end of the year, further endangering those left jobless throughout the downturn. Congress reconvened on Monday for a brief session in which it could pass new fiscal support. Both President Donald Trump and President-elect Joe Biden have backed large-scale stimulus packages, but legislators remain worlds apart with respect to the price tag. Senate Republicans led by Mitch McConnell have pushed a $500 billion funding package, but House Democrats continue to back the $2.2 trillion HEROES Act they passed in early October.

Even as the GAO warns of claim backlogs, jobless benefits remain elevated. Claims for unemployment benefits in the week that ended on November 21 totaled 778,000, the Labor Department said Wednesday. The reading exceeded the economist estimate of 730,000 and marked the first back-to-back jump in claims since July.

Though weekly claims counts are down significantly from the March high of nearly 7 million, they're still well above the 665,000 seen during the worst week of the Great Recession.

To be sure, the GAO noted that repeatedly counting Americans who filed several claims might have resulted in some inflated counts. The agency recommended the Labor Department note in its weekly filings report that the figures "do not accurately estimate" the number of unique Americans claiming benefits. The GAO also recommended the department "pursue options" that more accurately tracks the exact number of Americans receiving benefits.

The Labor Department agreed with the former recommendation and partially agreed with the latter. The department disagreed that it should retroactively report the number of distinct individuals claiming UI benefits, in part because state programs could face challenges in updating its reporting requirements. Still, the GAO noted the department should attempt to revise its prior reports "because they are vital to understanding how many individuals are receiving UI benefits."

"Without an accurate accounting of the number of individuals who are relying on UI and PUA benefits in as close to real-time as possible, policy makers may be challenged to respond to the crisis at hand," the watchdog said.

Cyber Monday 2020 Macy's Deals 4x3

Cyber Monday 2020 is here to cap off the past few weeks of savings, just in time for the holidays. If you've been staying home to shop deals online, you're in the right place. Macy's is making it extra easy for shoppers to get their purchases quickly, offering curbside and in-store pickup, as well as same-day and next-day delivery.

There are great deals happening right now at Macy's across all categories, from top makeup brands to furniture and cookware. You can find everything from iconic eyeshadow palettes for 50% off to Instant Pots for 30% off. Additionally, if you're willing to create an account and sign up to receive text or email notifications, you can get a coupon for an extra 25% off.

Plus, shipping is free for orders over $25 and you can return orders all the way through January 31, 2021.

Best Macy's Cyber Monday 2020 deals currently happening:

Naked Honey Eyeshadow Palette (medium, Preferred: Macy's)Hard Anodized Aluminum Nonstick 9.5" Fry Pan (medium, Preferred: Macy's)Duo Nova Pressure Cooker 7-in-1 (8 Qt) (medium, Preferred: Macy's)

How do we choose the best deals from Macy's?

All of the products meet our coverage standards. We choose brands that we've tested and trust.

We compare prices against Amazon, Target, Walmart, and other retailers. The deals we include are the same or better (not including promotional discounts from using certain credit cards).

We look at the price history of every product to evaluate how significant the savings are.

When is Cyber Monday 2020?

Cyber Monday 2020 is on November 30, and unlike some other retailers, Macy's is reserving most deals for Monday.

Can I order online and pick up in a  store?

Yes, for many items but not all. Macy's will offer curbside and in-store pickup. The retailer also ships certain purchases either the same day or the next day.

What should I buy from Macy's during Cyber Monday?

Macy's has a wide range of products. Expect deals in every category, including bakeware, jewelry, shoes, kitchen appliances, beauty, toys, and more. While it does have some electronics, you're probably better off looking for those deals elsewhere, like Target, Amazon, or Best Buy.

For last year's Cyber Monday event, Macy's had deals on Instant Pots, KitchenAid mixers, Hotel Collection bedding, and Serta mattresses. Expect similar deals this year.

Should I enroll in Macy's Star Rewards?

In 2018, Macy's started allowing anyone to enroll in its Star Rewards program. Previously, only people with a Macy's credit card were eligible. It's free to sign up as a "bronze" member. At that level, you earn 1% back in rewards, or $10 for every $1,000 you spend. Extra perks include a birthday gift and access to bonus offers.

Silver, gold, and platinum tiers require a Macy's credit card.

Which is better, Black Friday or Cyber Monday?

There is less of a contrast between Black Friday and Cyber Monday this year. More people will shop online than in stores, and most retailers aren't offering in-store-only deals.

Macy's has a generous 90-day return policy, which is extended during the holiday season (with exceptions for certain products). If you pick up something and see a better price elsewhere, you should be able to return it.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un may have already received an unapproved coronavirus vaccine

  • North Korean leader Kim Jong Un received a COVID-19 vaccination from the Chinese government, Japanese intelligence sources told a Washington DC-based Korea expert.
  • Kim's health has been the subject of rumors throughout his nine-year rule of the country.
  • The 36-year-old dictator is a frequent smoker and obese, according to South Korean lawmakers, fueling speculation that he would experience complications if he were to contract COVID-19.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un received a COVID-19 vaccination from the Chinese government, according to Japanese intelligence sources who discussed the matter with a Washington DC-based Korea expert.

Several other "high-ranking officials within the Kim family and leadership network" were believed to have received a vaccine from China sometime in the last two or three weeks, the unnamed intelligence sources told Harry Kazianis, senior director of the think tank Center for the National Interest.

Kim's health has often been the subject of rumors during his nine-year rule. His brief absence from public view earlier this year prompted speculation that he received heart surgery or contracted the coronavirus. The 36-year-old dictator is a frequent smoker and obese, according to South Korean lawmakers, fueling speculation that he would experience medical complications if he were to contract COVID-19.

Chinese government officials claim they are working on phase three trials for a vaccine, the last step for final approval, for five vaccine candidates. One experimental vaccine produced by China-based pharmaceutical firm Sinopharm was reportedly administered to nearly a million people, none of whom reported "serious adverse" reactions, according to an article by the company that was published on social media and viewed by CNN.

North Korea's propaganda outlets have been quiet about infection rates there. While Pyongyang reports suspected cases, it has yet to confirm positive cases. As the pandemic surged throughout the world in the summer, North Korea claimed it had zero cases and that a lone defector from South Korea had brought the disease across its borders.

News of the virus prompted North Korea to impose strict lockdowns, even going as far as cutting off trade routes with China, its neighbor and closest partner. During a politburo meeting in August, Kim cited "the spread of the worldwide malignant virus" and announced the country would enact stricter measures near the border.

Bruce Klingner, a former chief of the CIA's branch in South Korea, previously told Insider that the situation in North Korea was exacerbated because of its lack of resources.

"It reflects the perfect storm of economic stresses that North Korea is suffering right now," Klingner said in August. "It was already suffering from being isolated from the world."

"There's that conflicting necessity to both shut down against COVID-19 but also to open up for aid or humanitarian and medical assistance," Klingner added. "So the regime, like other countries, are going to struggle with how to balance those two conflicting objectives."

'December's return may be sub-par': A Wall Street chief strategist warns that stocks could limp into year-end after an explosive November

Trader NYSE
  • History shows that December's returns may be sub-par following an explosive November for stocks, according to CFRA's Sam Stovall.
  • The chief investment strategist highlighted several historical data points that indicate weak gains are ahead.
  • For example, in every November since WWII, whenever the S&P 500 gained 5% or more, December's rise was below average, Stovall said. The S&P 500 is on track to record over a 10% gain in November.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Stocks may use December to catch their breath after a post-election sprint, according to CFRA's Sam Stovall.

The chief investment strategist highlighted in a note on Monday that December's returns may be subpar given how well major indexes have performed in November. On November 24, the stock market hit a "three-way all time high" with the Dow, S&P 500, and Russell 2000 all hitting new records. Stovall said that this three-way high has only occurred 200 times since the Russell 2000's inception in 1979, and each time following the event, stock market gains have remained flat.

In the 22 days following the three-way high, the S&P 500 has recorded a flat price change, compared to the average gain of 0.71%, said Stovall. The benchmark index rose in price only half of the time following this market event, versus the typical 63% frequency of advance, he added.

Read more:Buy these 10 stocks set to soar and smash Wall Street's expectations in the recovery from COVID-19, RBC says

Stovall also said that the outsized gain for the S&P 500 during the month of November may lead to a sub-par December if November's S&P 500 price rise remains above 10%. As of intraday trading on November 30, the S&P 500 has gained roughly 10.5% this month.

Stovall said there have only been 11 times since World War II that the stock market in any month of the year rose by 10% or more, and that the following month saw an increase just 45% of the time. Also, in every November since World War II, whenever the S&P 500 gained 5% or more, December's price rise was below average, he said.

"So while the equity market may continue on its course of confidence that a soon-to-be-released Covid-19 vaccine will allow global economies to reopen in earnest in 2021, history hints that December's return may be sub-par as stocks catch their breath from their recent post-election sprint," Stovall said.

A woman said she gave birth to a baby with protective COVID-19 antibodies after contracting the virus during pregnancy

pregnant woman pregnancy expectant expecting first second third trimester fertile fertility mom mother parent maternity baby birth labor cox 4
  • A woman in Singapore who had COVID-19 in March just gave birth to a baby who has antibodies that seem to be protective against the virus, she told a local paper.
  • Past research has suggested antibodies against COVID-19 cross the placenta in utero, but little is known about how long the presumed immunity may last and how the timing of infection during pregnancy plays a role.
  • Breast milk also has detectable antibodies against COVID-19 and there's no evidence it transmits the virus, leading health organizations to encourage moms with the illness to breastfeed while taking precautions.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

When Celine Ng-Chan was 10 weeks pregnant, she was diagnosed with COVID-19. Back then, in March, even less was known about how the coronavirus affected pregnant women and their future children.

But now that Ng-Chan, a private tutor in Singapore, gave birth to her son Aldrin in early November, the news is encouraging both for Ng-Chan and other women who have or contract COVID-19 when pregnant.

Aldrin is COVID-19-free and appears to have acquired protective antibodies at least temporarily from his mother's illness, Ng-Chan told the Straits Times.  Ng-Chan wasn't COVID-19 positive during delivery.

"My pregnancy and birth was smooth sailing despite being diagnosed with COVID-19 in my first trimester, which is the most unstable stage of the pregnancy. I'm very blessed to have Aldrin and he came out very healthy," Ng-Chan said. "I feel relieved my COVID-19 journey is finally over now."

Her story adds a face to research suggesting that mother-to-infant COVID-19 transmission is rare, and that babies born to women who've had the illness may be somewhat protected, Dr. Jessica Madden, a pediatrician and neonatologist who serves as medical director of Aeroflow Breastpumps,  told Insider.

Some COVID-19 antibodies seem to cross the placenta

Small studies have suggested that COVID-positive mothers pass on IgG antibodies — the type that indicate recovery — against the virus to their fetuses in utero.

One March paper of six women who tested positive for the virus at delivery, for instance, found five had elevated levels of IgG antibodies even though none had COVID-19. All of the women wore masks, delivered their babies via C-section in negative-pressure isolation rooms, and were isolated from their children immediately after delivery — something more recent research has suggested is unnecessary.

An October case report also describes an infant born to a mom with asymptomatic COVID-19 who had IgG antibodies but a negative COVID test, demonstrating "passive immunity" through the placenta, the authors write.

In some ways, this is expected, since IgG antibodies against other bacteria and viruses are known to protect fetuses and newborns against infectious diseases, Madden told Insider.

"This is the reason why certain vaccines, like pertussis and flu, are recommended during pregnancy," she said. "IgG antibodies increase in fetuses later in pregnancy, especially after the 36-week gestation mark."

Still, more research is needed to understand how severity of illness affects antibody levels, how time of infection during pregnancy plays a role, and how strong and long-lasting babies' presumed immunity is.

One study out of Wuhan, China, including 24 COVID-19-positive pregnant women suggested any immunity in newborns wanes quickly.

What's more, Madden said, "we do not know if having COVID-19 prior to pregnancy will provide IgG immunity to fetuses who are conceived after a mother has already recovered from the virus."

Breast milk has detectable antibodies too

The breast milk of moms recently infected with COVID-19 is also believed to offer some protection to newborns. One preprint study in September showed that of 37 milk samples, none had detectable virus but all had antibodies thought to neutralize COVID-19.

This too isn't entirely surprising since some breast milk antibodies are known to help protect babies from various diseases like measles while they're too young to receive a vaccine. Breastfeeding is also associated with a lower risk of conditions, including diabetes, asthma, sudden infant death syndrome, and some gastrointestinal illnesses.

Those benefits outweigh the still-yet-unseen risks of breastfeeding with COVID-19, according to top health organizations like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as long as new moms with the illness take precautions like wearing a mask and washing their hands and breasts before nursing.

A secret, high-level meeting suggests Israel and Saudi Arabia are hedging their bets on Biden

Netanyahu bin Salman prince thumb composite
A composite image of Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, left, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
  • Saudi and Israeli sources say that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman met covertly on November 22, the first such meeting between Israeli and Saudi leaders.
  • Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's presence at the meeting indicates that the US supports their closer ties, but the US is about to get a new president, and the two Middle Eastern leaders may also be seeking a more diverse friend group.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Full normalization between Saudi Arabia and Israel remains unlikely in the near term, but defense and intelligence cooperation will continue to advance in the coming months.

Saudi and Israeli sources, speaking to Reuters and The Wall Street Journal, have confirmed that Prime Minister Netanyahu traveled to the Saudi city of Neom on November 22 for a covert discussion with Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, marking the first-ever such meeting between Israeli and Saudi leaders.

The conversation between Netanyahu and the Saudi Crown Prince (who also serves as the kingdom's defense minister) focused on normalizing relations and cooperating against Iran. This, combined with the fact that Mossad head Yossi Cohen was reportedly also in attendance, signals deepening intelligence and defense cooperation between the two countries.

The United States still appears to be interested in facilitating stronger Saudi-Israeli ties, given that US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo allegedly also attended the November 22 meeting in Neom.

The administration of US President Donald Trump is trying to use its final weeks in office to cement its legacy abroad. And normalization between Israel and Arab Gulf states (including the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Sudan) has been a key foreign policy victory for the Trump White House.

trump saudi arabia
President Donald Trump with Abu Dhabi's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan at a summit in Riyadh, May 21, 2017.

Saudi Arabia and Israel, meanwhile, are seeking to lessen their reliance on US cooperation by diversifying their international relationships, including with one another, for fear that the incoming administration of US President-elect Joe Biden will adopt a moderate approach to Iran, as well as a more critical approach to the region's overall human rights record.

Saudi Arabia and Israel also have mutual covert concerns about the Houthi movement in Yemen (which is Iran-aligned and threatens both Saudi Arabian territory and Israeli shipping in the Red Sea), and share concerns about Iranian militia and missile build-ups in Iraq, Lebanon and Syria as well.

A deeper Israeli-Saudi defense relationship would provide new options for the two to counter Iran, particularly in covert operations in proxy theaters like Syria, Iraq and Yemen. It might also soften some opposition in the US Congress to new arms sales to Saudi Arabia, as the Israelis become a more overt ally of Saudi national interests and defense priorities.

In addition to offering the two countries a strategic asset against Iran, further developments in the Saudi-Israeli relationship would be a boon for Israeli normalization globally.

Saudi Arabia's still-notable influence in the Muslim world gives its action weight among global opinion. As Riyadh warms to Israel, its actions could mollify attitudes around Israel in other Muslim-majority countries, boosting momentum toward normalization in states such as Pakistan, Indonesia, Malaysia and Bangladesh.

saudi king salman neom
Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz arrives at the airport in Neom, August 12, 2020.

Closer Israeli-Saudi ties would also prove economically beneficial for both countries.

Saudi Arabia, and in particular its high-profile development projects like Neom, are reliant on advanced technologies such as biotech, agricultural tech and cyber technologies to succeed. And Israel is already among the global leaders in these sectors.

  • In return for normalization, the United Arab Emirates' private and public sector is gaining rapid access to Israeli technologies.

However, Saudi Arabia has not yet shown that it's prepared to make the jump to normalization with Israel without the formation of a Palestinian state.

Saudi media has been attempting to normalize conversations around Israel, shifting away from the kingdom's previous blanket censorship of the subject of Israel as an issue. But Saudi Arabia's official line, and one upheld by King Salman, remains that normalization of the two countries' ties will only happen with a final peace deal that includes a Palestinian state as laid out in the Saudi-led 2000 Arab Peace Initiative.

Domestic backlash in Saudi Arabia could also cause notable security concerns.

Normalization remains broadly unpopular among the Saudi population and in the traditional, King Salman-dominated establishment. Given the spate of recent terror attacks in Saudi Arabia, including a relatively rare Islamic State attack triggered by the renewed controversy in France around the Prophet Muhammad cartoons, extremist sentiment remains clearly present in the kingdom and able to inspire violence.

Casper Element mattress

Cyber Monday usually marks the last big sale of the year, and as many of us head into winter and face an unprecedented amount of time at home (and probably in bed), there's no better time to ditch that ratty old mattress and give your bedroom the upgrade it deserves.

Black Friday held some outstanding deals, but luckily for the stragglers, they've mostly stuck around through Cyber Monday and even through the rest of the week.

Below are the best mattress deals we've found on Cyber Monday. Some of our favorite deals so far? Up to $600 off Casper mattresses and up to $500 off Leesa mattresses (which also come with two free down-alternative pillows). Both are synonymous with successful mattress startups and we've tested nearly every single mattress from both companies — you can read all about Casper here and Leesa here. They both have sales of at least 10% so there's never a reason to pay full-price, but these discounts are the steepest we've seen. We don't expect either brand to have a better sale as we head into the holiday season.

If you're not sure which mattress is right for you, check out our guide to the best mattresses. And be sure to also check out more Cyber Monday mattress deals here and our Cyber Monday live blog for the quickest updates on the best sales happening now.

Liverpool is attempting mass COVID-19 testing during the UK's lockdown — but the reaction to the program is mixed

Liverpool is undertaking a mass coronavirus testing pilot, with residents having access to lateral flow tests that are able to determine if someone has coronavirus in under an hour.
  • Liverpool's mass COVID-19 testing program, a pilot in Prime Minister Boris Johnson's "Operation Moonshot vision," is dividing public health officials and politicians, according to The Washington Post.
  • The Post reported that as of November 3, Liverpool's weekly rate of COVID-19 tests was 300 cases per 100,000 residents, and as of November 21, the rate was 158 cases per 100,000 residents.
  • Angela Raffle, a senior lecturer at the University of Bristol, told The Post that the mass testing efforts are the "most unethical proposals for use of public funds or screening."
  • Other public health officials have decried the accuracy of rapid tests, and pointed out that the testing strategy, which will expand to other cities in England next week, will consume 77% of the NHS budget.
  • According to an analysis from BBC Newsnight, only 4% of residents have participated in some of Liverpool's poorest communities.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Liverpool, the UK's tenth largest city, has implemented a mass swabbing and testing program to curb the spread of COVID-19 — and according to new reporting from The Washington Post, there are mixed feelings about the program.

As a local effort in the UK's "Operation Moonshot vision," about a third of Liverpool's 500,000 residents since the start of November.

The implementation of the pilot mass testing program in Liverpool is part of a broader effort to conduct six-week testing surges across the country's "Tier 3" cities after the national lockdown ends next week. Tier 3 is the UK's most restrictive set of COVID-19 lockdown measures, which Liverpool sits within, and testing started in Liverpool one day after the national lockdown was announced on November 6.

Public spaces are being used as testing sites, and the army is assisting with logistics as residents are initially swabbed in their nose and throat and get results in about an hour. If a resident's sample is marked positive, they are offered a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test, which is more accurate.

According to The Post, as of November 3, Liverpool's weekly of coronavirus cases was 300 cases per 100,000 residents, and as of November 21, the rate was 158 cases per 100,000 residents.

Within the three weeks of testing in Liverpool, British politicians are widely lauding the program, while many public health officials are questioning the effectiveness and cost of it, according to The Post.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson, called Liverpool a success story and model for other cities to follow. Health Secretary Matt Hancock also praised the effort and claimed that in Liverpool, cases had declined by two thirds.

Some critics have aimed their concerns at the rapid tests used in Liverpool, which can have serious accuracy issues and potentially only correctly identify around half of the asymptomatic carriers.

Angela Raffle, a senior lecturer at the University of Bristol, told The Post that the mass testing efforts the "most unethical proposals for use of public funds or screening." Raffle added that the space of a few weeks between tests is not particularly helpful, and said that in order for mass testing to be effective, residents would have to be tested every few days.

One UK study, published by Royal Society Open Science, argued that with 10 million weekly tests, together with household quarantine and systematic contact tracing, the mass testing strategy could help lower the spread.

Some other public health experts are claiming that the shrinking number of cases could also be a result of the national lockdown, and not solely the mass testing strategy.

There are also unknowns about how the program is being tracked and studied, according to Jon Deeks, a professor of Biostatistics at the University of Birmingham, who told WIRED: "The Department of Health is being incredibly secretive about what it is going to do, and how this pilot is going to be evaluated. There's a National Screening Committee, which we've had in the UK for 20 years, and they've been sidelined from this."

The Cabinet Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In medical journal BMJ, Mike Gill, the former director of Public Health England, was also critical of the pilot, which he called "an unevaluated, underdesigned, and costly mess" and claimed that it absorbed up to 77% of the NHS' national budget.

At the start of December, 40% of England's population will be eligible for mass testing, and the government's goal is to swab 10 million people a day. The effort will cost more than $130 billion dollars according to The Post.

Cyber Monday 2020 FAQs

When is Cyber Monday?

Cyber Monday occurs the following week after Black Friday. This year, the online-focused shopping holiday began on Monday, November 30. Typically, deals start at 12 a.m. on Monday. However, we began seeing Cyber Monday deals on Saturday morning onward after Black Friday.

As a continuation of sorts of Black Friday, Cyber Monday gives you another opportunity to save on tech, home goods, clothing, and other deals that you might've missed while recovering from Thanksgiving dinner.

What is Cyber Monday?

Cyber Monday began as the online version of Black Friday, where online retailers offered big discounts to match their brick-and-mortar counterparts. Now, Cyber Monday is the biggest shopping day of the year, surpassing even Black Friday in terms of revenue and sales.

The "holiday" was created in 2005 as the online version of the brick-and-mortar-focused Black Friday. Previously, the main differentiation between Black Friday and Cyber Monday was that Black Friday focused on in-store sales and Cyber Monday on online sales. But as shopping habits have increasingly favored the internet, amplified by the pandemic, shoppers can look forward to a very online-focused Cyber Monday and Black Friday.

Cyber Monday offers a great opportunity to save on all your holiday gifts

How long do Cyber Monday sales last?

Though Cyber Monday sales once only took place on Monday, we've been seeing them extend to longer and longer durations, with more than a few lasting until the rest of the week. For instance, Wayfair's Cyber Monday deals will take place all from November 30 through December 4.

"Doorbuster" Cyber Monday markdowns are often restricted to the day and available stock. When we know the end date of a deal, we'll list it next to the deal.

What's better, Black Friday or Cyber Monday?

With most Americans sticking to online shopping this year, the debate on which shopping holiday is particularly moot. Both events will be held predominantly online, and more than a few deals overlap. In fact, many Black Friday deals become Cyber Monday deals when the dates change.

If possible, shoppers should shop both holidays. We've seen different products receive better discounts on each day, and the deals that each retailer offers will vary.

Generally speaking, consumers shopping for big-ticket items, such as laptops, TVs, and kitchen appliances, can expect more opportunities on Black Friday. But for shoppers looking for last year's models, smart home gadgets, digital subscriptions, and gift cards will likely find more luck during Cyber Monday.

What should I buy during Cyber Monday?

If a retailer offers Black Friday deals, it's a near guarantee that it will offer Cyber Monday deals, too. Amazon, Best Buy, Target, and Walmart are some noteworthy retailers that we know will participate in the shopping event.

We will likely see massive discounts on some of our favorite direct-to-consumer products during Cyber Monday, such as retail startups like Leesa and Brooklinen. For some, Cyber Monday (or Cyber Week) will be one of the few times of the year when their products see major markdowns.

Where can I find Cyber Monday ads?

Shoppers in-the-know eagerly await Black Friday and Cyber Monday advertising to help guide their Black Friday game plan. Typically, storefronts like Best Buy, Target, and Walmart release their previews late-October or early-November.

While we don't know an official date when each retailer will release their previews, a smattering of retailers has already posted their advertising online, the biggest being Walmart.

Here are the most important ad scans currently available:

  • Best Buy: Best Buy's Cyber Monday deals can be found here. The retailer is offering discounts on everything from TVs to wireless earbuds and smartwatches.
  • Walmart: To find the ad scan, first find your local Walmart via the local directory. Once you get to the "Store Overview" page, find the "Weekly Ad" section.

Will there be Cyber Monday shipping delays?

Shipping delays and shopping holidays are inextricably linked, and this year is no different. Experts suggest that consumers may see low inventory and shipping problems, during Cyber Monday, Black Friday, and the weeks following

To help you avoid the shipping crunch and get your stuff sooner, several retailers, including Walmart, Target, and Best Buy, offer in-store pickup and contactless curbside pickup. This means shoppers can grab their orders at a nearby location, provided that the retailer has it in stock.

How we select the best Cyber Monday deals

  • We only choose products that meet our high standard of coverage, and that we've either used ourselves or researched carefully.
  • We will compare the prices among top retailers such as Amazon, Best Buy, Target, and Walmart and only include the deals that are better than all others offered (not including promotional discounts that come from using certain credit cards).
  • All deals will be at least 20% off, with the occasional exception for products that are rarely discounted or provide an outsized value.
