Airpods Black Friday Deals 4x3
The latest versions of Apple AirPods — including the AirPods Pro — are on for Cyber Monday 2020.
Table of Contents: Masthead Sticky

Apple's AirPods are among the world's most popular wireless earbuds, and they're on sale during today's Cyber Monday 2020 event. Even though some of the best deals have already passed, there are still some discounts worth paying attention to on both the AirPods Pro and standard AirPods.

Luckily, the Pro model can be found for $200 at Target this Cyber Monday, a notable discount compared to the usual $249 price Apple charges for its noise-cancelling earbuds. That said, it's not the lowest price we've ever seen. Woot has been selling the AirPods Pro for a slightly cheaper price of $190, but that deal is currently sold out.

Here's a look at the best Cyber Monday deals on AirPods that are currently available. For more savings, check out all the best Cyber Monday tech deals here. You can also read our Cyber Monday liveblog for deal highlights throughout the day.

The best Cyber Monday Apple AirPods deals

A very similar deal on Apple's AirPods with wireless charging is also available at Amazon.

AirPods Pro (medium, Preferred: Target)

A very similar deal on Apple's AirPods Pro is also available at B&H Photo. Woot has an even better deal price of $190, but stock is currently sold out.

Wireless Charging Case for Airpods (medium, Preferred: Amazon)

If you're looking for a pair of wireless headphones that are similar to AirPods but offer a more secure and snug fit, check out the Powerbeats Pro. The Powerbeats Pro wrap around your ears for a tighter grip and offer longer battery life than the AirPods Pro. They also come with similar features, like quick pairing with Apple products, since the earbuds have Apple's H1 processor inside. The Powerbeats Pro have also been on sale for most of the Black Friday and Cyber Monday weekend, but that's not for lack of quality.

Powerbeats Pro (medium, Preferred: Best Buy)

Two of the most important aides in the Trump White House gave birth to their first child recently, according to photos tweeted by Katie Miller, the communications director for Vice President Mike Pence.

She and her husband, Stephen, a senior aide to President Donald Trump and one of his most trusted advisors, posed with their daughter, Mackenzie, for a picture.

Both Stephen and Katie contracted the coronavirus during the pregnancy, with Stephen testing positive in October and Katie in May.

The Millers have been fervent supporters of the Trump administration's child-separation policy for immigration and asylum seekers.

Stephen has been widely credited as the architect of the Trump administration's immigration policy.

Hundreds of children are still apart from their parents, many of whom were deported back to their home countries while their kids were kept in the US.

An ACLU court filing from October listed 545 kids still waiting for their parents to be contacted.

Katie Miller made headlines in July for comments on child separation she made to Jacob Soboroff, an NBC News reporter and author of the book "Separated: Inside an American Tragedy."

She told Soboroff that the Department of Homeland Security sent her "to the border to see the separations for myself — to try to make me more compassionate — but it didn't work."

The equation I use to figure out how much money to save for any goal within the next 5 years

$

friends traveling abroad
A simple equation breaks down the big goal into smaller, more achievable ones.
  • Achieving any big financial goal requires some planning.
  • If you know your target savings balance and when you want to reach it, you can easily calculate how much of each paycheck you need to save.
  • Savings interest, bonuses, or pay raises could help boost your balance, but not factoring them in at the outset ensures you'll meet your goal without them.
  • Sign up for Personal Finance Insider's email newsletter here »

We all have goals we're working toward in life, and many of them cost money.

Buying a house, getting your MBA, sending a child to private school, taking a once-in-a-lifetime vacation, launching a business — whatever your goal, chances are you don't have the cash just sitting around to fund it in full. That's where saving comes in.

Saving money for a big purchase or event might seem overwhelming if you start with nothing in the bank. I'm supposed to have $50,000 for a down payment if I want to buy a house in three years? On this salary? Get real, you might be thinking.

But with a simple equation that breaks down the big goal into a series of smaller ones, you can illuminate a path that feels far more achievable.

One caveat: The equation works best for goals with a timeline of five years or less. Anything beyond that, such as retirement, requires a slightly more complicated formula that factors in investing returns.

How much to save for short-term financial goals

First, you need to know two things: your target balance and when you want to get there.

Then, plug those numbers into this equation:

Total amount needed ÷ the number of years until the event or purchase ÷ 24 paychecks in a year = how much to save every time you get paid

I save money automatically through direct deposit. Twice a month when my paycheck comes in, part of it goes into my checking account to cover bills and part of it goes into my high-yield savings account for a specific goal. I've found this is the best way to ensure my goals are a true priority.

If you don't get paid on a regular schedule or prefer to save monthly instead, simply swap out the final part of the equation — the number of paychecks per year — with 12, to represent the number of months.

Here's how I used the equation to build up my travel fund:

$5,000 [target balance] ÷ 2 [number of years to meet my goal] ÷ 24 [number of paychecks per year with direct deposit into savings] = $104

$5,000 sounds like a lot. But $104? Much more palatable.

Savings boosters can help you reach the goal even sooner

What I love about this equation is that it's conservative. It assumes that every dollar will come from the same place (your paycheck), and at the same time (once or twice a month). Thankfully, reality can be more generous.

In the example above, it didn't take me two full years to meet my goal. I don't like to rely on compound growth, or pay raises, or windfalls, but all of these helped boost my ability to save and shortened the time it took to reach my target number.

High-yield savings accounts offer a modest return on your balance while keeping your money safe and accessible. My high-yield savings accounts have earned me over $150 in interest this year. But, interest rates are variable. Economic conditions can cause rates to change multiple times a year, so I like to think of compound growth as a bonus.

Pay raises can help increase your cash flow. If your expenses stay the same after your income goes up, you should be able to save more money. After each pay raise, I re-evaluate my goal to see if I can save more, and then adjust my timeline.

Windfalls, like a tax refund or a bonus (or even a stimulus check) might be expected but are not always guaranteed. I've been lucky to get a few small financial windfalls. Whenever I add this money to my savings account, I plug my numbers into the equation again.

Of course, reality can sometimes be not-so-generous, too. If you lose your job or your income takes a hit, play around with the second input — the timeline for your goal — in order to adjust your per-paycheck or monthly savings requirement.

We've highlighted some of the best tech deals you can find from Amazon today on Cyber Monday.

Amazon's Cyber Monday sale is on today, and the tech deals are pouring in. This year, we're seeing an emphasis on entertainment deals: TVs and speakers from brands like Sony and Samsung have seen deep discounts. You can also find excellent price drops on smart home tech like Amazon's all-new Echo devices, which were just announced in September.

Just note that, because of their popularity on Black Friday, some items are seeing delayed shipping estimates, with some devices shipping out in late December or early January. They may not be available for holiday gifting, but that doesn't mean they're not still great deals.

We've highlighted some of the best tech deals you can find from Amazon today on Cyber Monday, though you may want to act fast — some are only available for a limited time.

Cyber Monday happens every year following the weekend after Black Friday. This year, the online-focused shopping holiday lands today, Monday, November 30. Cyber Monday sales started as early as Saturday morning after Black Friday.

We've seen some "doorbusters" released on Cyber Monday, with limited supplies. Though Cyber Monday sales once only took place on Monday, we'll likely see some deals last through the rest of the week.

Where can I find Amazon's Cyber Monday deals?

Amazon's Cyber Monday page will be the place to check if you want to browse the retailer's holiday shopping discounts. Just like years past, Amazon will also be offering Alexa-exclusive deals that can be discovered by asking, "Alexa, what are my deals?"

Do you need an Amazon Prime membership for the deals?

Unlike Amazon Prime Day, you don't need to be a Prime member to take advantage of Amazon's Black Friday deals. But you do get perks like faster delivery and exclusive deals if you sign up for Prime which costs $12.99 per month. It's a worthwhile option if you plan to do the bulk of your holiday shopping on Amazon and want the flexibility to order last-minute gifts.

Guggenheim says it could invest up to $530 million in a bitcoin trust as the cryptocurrency leaps to record highs

  • Guggenheim Partners disclosed in a regulatory filing on Friday that its Macro Opportunities Fund held the right to invest up to 10% of its net asset value in Grayscale Bitcoin Trust.
  • The trust invests solely in Bitcoin, and a 10% bet from Guggenheim's fund would equate to roughly $530 million.
  • The cryptocurrency on Monday leaped to an all-time intraday high of $19,873.23, eclipsing the record set in December 2017, before paring gains.
  • Watch bitcoin trade live here.

Guggenheim Partners is the latest Wall Street firm to show interest in Bitcoin, and a Friday regulatory filing signals the firm could make a massive investment in the soaring cryptocurrency.

Guggenheim disclosed in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing published Friday that its Macro Opportunities Fund held the right to invest up to 10% of its net asset value in Grayscale Bitcoin Trust. The trust invests solely in Bitcoin, allowing its shares to serve as a proxy for the popular cryptocurrency.

The fund manages roughly $5.3 billion in assets, making a 10% investment worth about $530 million.

Guggenheim described cryptocurrencies as "digital assets designed as a medium of exchange." The firm added that, though it could gain exposure to Bitcoin through the Grayscale trust, it had no other plans to invest directly or indirectly in cryptocurrencies.

Bitcoin charged to a record high on Monday, surpassing the record of $19,511 set in December 2017. The token jumped as high as $19,873.23 before paring some gains.

Guggenheim joins other Wall Street heavyweights who've expressed bullishness toward the volatile token. Mike Novogratz, the former hedge-fund manager who has long pushed for widespread use of cryptocurrencies, praised PayPal's decision in October to adopt them, describing it as an "exciting day" for the technology.

"All banks will now be on a race to service crypto," he tweeted on October 21. "We have crossed the rubicon people."

The billionaire investor Paul Tudor Jones also backed Bitcoin last month, deeming the asset "the best inflation trade." With the Federal Reserve set to temporarily allow inflation above 2%, Bitcoin's decentralized nature protects its value from faster price growth, Jones said.

Guggenheim's filing suggests the firm is optimistic about Bitcoin but still sees several risks to the coin's run-up. A stake in Bitcoin could fall prey to its "highly volatile" nature, the firm said in the filing. It added that the cryptocurrency's value "could drop precipitously" for reasons including regulatory changes, a change in user preference to a competing token, or a "crisis of confidence" in the Bitcoin network.

Bitcoin traded at $19,232.35 as of 12:25 p.m. ET, up roughly 166% year-to-date.

Dyson Black Friday Deal V8 Absolute

This Cyber Monday 2020, Dyson is offering some rare deals on its newest models, including the Dyson V11 Outsize Cordless Vacuum, our top pick from our guide to the best vacuum cleaners you can buy. You'll save $150 off the usual price of $700, bringing this model down to $550. We haven't seen discounts on this model before, which features an enlarged tank, 60 minutes of run time, and intelligent suction that automatically adjusts according to what floor type you're cleaning. The V11 Animal (good for pet hair) and V11 Outsize (largest tank) are also $100 off, bringing those models down to $500 and $630, respectively. The difference between the models comes down to suction and tank size: as you go up in price, you typically get more powerful suction, a larger tank, and longer run time.

Dyson is also offering $100 off its Cyclone V10 Animal Cordless Vacuum Cleaner and the slightly older but equally popular Dyson V8 Absolute Cordless Vacuum Cleaner, and you'll also get free shipping. The deals are available on the Dyson website now and last until they sell out or we reach the end of Cyber Monday, November 30. You can also find some of the same deals at a number of other retailers like Target, Amazon, The Home Depot, and Best Buy, though if you purchase from Dyson directly, you can get $75 worth of free tools.

The rarely-seen discounts on the V11 models are the highlight of this Cyber Monday sale, even if the discounts still don't bring these powerful models under $500. If you're looking for something less expensive, the V7, V8, and V10 models above are all great machines in their own rights, and all on sale for $100 to $150 off.

Cyber Monday 2020 Amazon Deals 2x1

Cyber Monday has arrived and Amazon is one of the best retailers to shop during the event. This year, both Amazon's Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales started earlier and will last longer than ever before.

Right now, shoppers can get big discounts on great holiday gifts in several categories, including tech, home, kitchen, fashion, and more. If you're shopping for Christmas presents, Cyber Monday may be one of the final deal opportunities this year. We're seeing many of the best deals currently happening, and while some of the biggest discounts are limited offers just for today, we expect some deals to continue over the next few days.

Currently, top deals include Fire tablets, the Kindle Paperwhite, Roombas, and more. We rounded up the best Cyber Monday deals to shop right now on Amazon, plus answers to some frequently asked questions regarding Cyber Monday, Cyber Week, Amazon, and the rest of the sales happening this month.

When does Amazon's Cyber Monday sale start?

Cyber Monday 2020 is currently happening today, Monday, November 30. While some sales started early and a few will likely continue into the week, we expect the best "doorbusters" to be happening today, with limited supplies.

How we choose the best Cyber Monday deals at Amazon

  • We only choose products that meet our high standard of coverage, and that we've either tested, used in our daily lives, or researched carefully.
  • We will compare the prices against other retailers like Target and Best Buy and only included the deals that are the same or better (not including promotional discounts that come from using certain credit cards).
  • All deals will be at least 20% off, with the occasional exception for products that are rarely discounted or provide an outsized value.

What Cyber Monday deals should you buy at Amazon?

Amazon's Cyber Monday markdowns are as good as those offered during Black Friday and are on par with the Cyber Monday discounts from Best Buy, Target, and Walmart. We expect Amazon and its competition to price-match each other throughout Cyber Monday. Shoppers can find big savings on digital content, streaming media players, smart home products, and more.

We're seeing many products that are a repeat of what we saw during Prime Day. Right now, some of the best deals currently available include Sonos speakers, Fire tablets, the Kindle Paperwhite, and Roombas

During Cyber Monday, shoppers should pay attention to two types of deals: daily deals and Lightning deals. The former are one-day offers, usually grouped by brand or category, and change at the end of the day. The latter are limited-stock offers released throughout the day. We expect to see the best deals to come in the Lightning deal form.

Should I get Amazon Prime?

Amazon Prime subscribers will get the most out of Amazon's Cyber Monday. We've found that shoppers can make up the cost of the subscription with their savings from shipping alone. If you don't shop Amazon often, but want to take advantage of the Black Friday and Cyber Monday discounts, consider a $13 month-long membership. New members can sign up for a free 30-day trial with full benefits through most of the sales event.

Signing up is easy, and a subscription comes with many more benefits than just free two-day shipping.

Shoppers should also consider applying for the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature credit card — for the 5% cashback on all Amazon purchases and a $100 gift card.

irobot roomba i7+ product image

Cyber Monday is one of the best times of year to buy a new vacuum. Retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, and Target drop their prices to commemorate the event, bringing all-time low prices on robot, cordless, and upright vacuums to online shoppers.

Usually, prices are matched between sellers online, with no one retailer standing out from the mix. This year, however, Target is definitely the first place you should check in your search for a vacuum: all floor care gets an extra 15% off in-cart.

The best Cyber Monday 2020 robot vacuum deals

  • Ecovacs OZMO T8, $650 (originally $800): RARE DEAL: A feature-full robot vacuum, the OZMO T8 simultaneously vacuums and mops, and has sensors to identify floor type so it can personalize how it cleans. It's pricey, for sure, but right now it's down to $650, a hefty discount to make buying one a little easier.
  • iRobot Roomba i7+, $600 (originally $1,000): LOWEST PRICE: The iRobot Roomba i7+ is as automated as it gets with automatic dirt disposal and the ability to schedule cleaning sessions of specific rooms. Down to $600, it's not exactly cheap, but it's significantly discounted (40% off, to be exact) from its usual price.
  • iRobot Roomba i7, $400 (originally $700): The iRobot Roomba i7 fluctuates between $500 and $700 year-round, so this drop to $400 is a solid deal. It's one of the best robotic vacuums you can own with its excellent suction power, smart features, and self-emptying base.

The best Cyber Monday 2020 cordless stick vacuum deals

  • Dyson V11 Animal, $500 (originally $600): This version of Dyson's V11 cordless stick vacuum is ideal for pet owners with its crevice tool, stiff bristle brush, and combination tool. Down to $500 ($100 off), this matches deals we've seen during major sales events. BEST BUY
  • Dyson V11 Torque Drive, $468 (originally $700): This model is an improvement on previous cordless vacuum models with its powerful digital motor, adaptive cleaner head, long battery life, and LCD screen. Down to $468 in-cart, this deal beats price drops from other retailers across the board.
  • Bissell Icon Pet Stick Vacuum, $172 (originally $350): Down to $172 in-cart, this more affordable pet hair and dander vacuum boasts a mess-free dirt tank and high-performance speed.
  • Hoover SmartWash Carpet Cleaner, $250 (originally $300): This carpet cleaner has a trigger-less design that automatically mixes and dispenses cleaning solution for easy cleaning designed for pet households. Down to $250, this is a solid discount on a versatile cleaner.
  • Bissell Power Steamer Heavy Duty, $130 (originally $160): Intended for cleaning both indoors and outdoors, this steam mop uses powerful, high-temperature steam to get the job done. Down to $130, it's not a huge discount, but it's a nice drop from it's usual $160 price tag.

Moderna will waste no time vaccinating Americans after a potential FDA green light.

After the company announced it would file for emergency-use authorization with the US Food and Drug Administration on Monday, the biotech company's CEO, Stéphane Bancel, said in an interview that Americans will start getting vaccinated "within 24 hours after the FDA gives an approval."

"The FDA has indicated to us that likely the the [Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee] meeting should happen on December 17 and, hopefully, if everything goes well in the next couple of weeks, you could expect between a day to 2-3 days after the VRBPAC meeting production approval," Bancel told Fox Business on Monday morning.

"The goal is to start vaccinating Americans within 24 hours after the FDA gives an approval," he said.

Moderna also released the results of an analysis of 196 COVID-19 cases in a late-stage trial on Monday, which showed the vaccine was 94.1% effective at preventing COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus, in that sample. Bancel said the company agreed to provide the FDA with an analysis of cases of at least 151 cases of disease to have a "robust analysis" prior to filing for emergency-use authorization.

The vaccine rollout could provide communities significant relief as COVID-19 continues to spread globally. The US hit record COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in November, and more than a quarter of a million Americans have died.

Moderna said the vaccine prevented against 100% of "severe" COVID-19 cases in a preliminary analysis of 30 cases. Bancel said he "was almost tap dancing in the house" after hearing the vaccine's effectiveness against severe cases in the trial.

"If you think about what has happened in the company, people get infected, if you get a severe disease, you end up in the hospital. If you get a bad case, you end up in the ICU and the worst case outcome is, of course, death — if you can stop that whole cascade, that is, I believe, a game changer," Bancel said in a separate interview with Yahoo Finance on Monday.

Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer filed for emergency use authorization of its vaccine on November 20. Pfizer's vaccine is 95% effective at preventing COVID-19, the company said. Johnson & Johnson resumed trials for a coronavirus vaccine after pausing last month. AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford said on November 23 that their vaccine was 70% effective at preventing COVID-19, but later pledged to run another study due to inconsistencies in the analysis.

The US bought 100 million vaccines each from Pfizer and Moderna. Alex Azar, the secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, said vulnerable populations like the elderly and healthcare workers will begin getting vaccinated in 2020. Experts say Americans will realistically have access to the vaccine by mid-2021.

The best Cyber Monday 2020 smartphone deals include up to 30% off Samsung's coveted Galaxy S20 phones

Galaxy s20 vs s20 plus
  • Today's Cyber Monday 2020 event is a great time to get deals on smartphones and other major tech devices.
  • This year, discounts are especially great on Samsung's coveted Galaxy S20 phones, Motorola's Moto G series, and Google's Pixel lineup.
  • OnePlus is also running a deal where you can more or less get two phones for the price of one: When you buy a OnePlus 8 Pro for $800, you can get a OnePlus 7T for just $1.
  • Apple iPhone deals are harder to find, but there are some good carrier deals if you meet the conditions in the fine print.

Smartphones are getting the Cyber Monday 2020 deal treatment today, with especially excellent deals on Samsung's highly rated Galaxy S20 series phones.

Note that these deals are mostly from Best Buy, and the deals are only available if you activate with AT&T, Verizon, or Sprint when you buy them. Unfortunately, T-Mobile users are out of luck on Best Buy, but T-Mobile has its own deals going on.

We're seeing deals for the Galaxy S20 FE, the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20 Plus, and the Galaxy S20 Ultra. Most notable is the Galaxy S20 FE's $50 reduction, which makes an already affordable premium phone even more affordable, and it's incredible value for a phone running on the powerful Snapdragon 865 chip with 5G. It also has a triple-lens camera and a 120Hz screen.

Even higher up the value chain are Motorola's Moto G phones, which are very capable devices at already-good prices. Best Buy is knocking down the price on Motorola's Moto G series even lower — sometimes by more than 50% — making them super bargains.

Google's new Pixel 5 and 4a phones are also getting discounts with activation at Best Buy, making them better options than at full retail price. In fact, you could say that the Pixel 5's $600 Cyber Monday pricing is how much the phone should cost in the first place — the cameras are second to none, but the processor doesn't match other phones in the $700 category, like the Galaxy S20 FE.

On the other end of the spectrum, if the Galaxy S20, S20 Plus, or S20 Ultra have been out of reach due to their typically high normal price tags, Cyber Monday 2020 is the time to check them out again. All those phones are more than 20% off at Best Buy with activation at the moment.

Apple iPhone Cyber Monday deals

Apple fans won't have much to celebrate about this Cyber Monday, as deals seem pretty limited for iPhones at the moment. There are a few carrier-specific deals, but they come with lots of fine print, so be sure to read closely to see if the deals work for you.

  • T-Mobile will give shoppers a free iPhone 12 or 12 Mini when they join and trade in an eligible device.
  • Verizon offers shoppers a buy one, get one deal and up to $800 off for those who buy any of Apple's new iPhones on a monthly payment plan with an eligible data plan.
  • AT&T is running a $700 discount on iPhones when shoppers add a new line, upgrade an existing line, and trade-in a smartphone valued at $95 or more.

We'll continue to update this post with more deals as we find them. You can also consult our many buying guides to help decide which one to buy.

Nikola's 25% dive is a good buying opportunity because the company's decision to abandon the Badger pickup means it can focus more on semi trucks, JPMorgan says

Nikola has run into trouble before when it comes to claims about its semi truck prototypes.
  • The 25% sell-off in Nikola on Monday represents a good buying opportunity for investors as the company is no longer distracted by its Badger pickup truck, JPMorgan said.
  • Nikola and General Motors entered into a revised deal on Monday that included the two companies shifting its focus away from the Badger truck and instead towards the Class 7 and Class 8 semi-trucks.
  • "We think this is a positive outcome for NKLA over the medium to longer term, since the company can now focus on the core Class 8 truck initiative," JPMorgan said.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Nikola's revised deal with General Motors represents a bullish development for investors over the medium to longer term, according to a Monday note from JPMorgan.

The bank, which retains a $40 price target on the beleaguered trucking start-up, said that investors should view any pullback in shares of Nikola as a good buying opportunity.

Investors are now staring down that opportunity after shares of Nikola declined by as much as 25% on Monday following the announcement of the long-awaited deal with General Motors.

As part of their agreement, General Motors will no longer acquire a $2 billion equity stake in Nikola, nor will it partner with the company as an OEM manufacturer to produce its much hyped Badger pickup truck.

Instead, Nikola and General Motors will shift their focus to developing Nikola's Class 7 and Class 8 semi-trucks powered by fuel cells.

The deal "looks like a conventional arms-length cost-plus supply contract for [General Motors'] Hydrotec system," JPMorgan said, adding that it can eventually include the Ultium battery system from  General Motors as well.

Nikola is now "on the hook" for capital costs to ramp up the production of the Hydrotec, while General Motors is likely committing to research and development costs, according to the note.

"We think this is a positive outcome for Nikola over the medium to longer term, since the company can now focus on the core Class 8 truck initiative and avoid the distraction and capex associated with the Badger pickup," JPMorgan said.

General Motors' more modest commitment to Nikola will likely weigh on investor sentiment in the short term, especially as 161 million shares are due for a lockup expiry this week, meaning that insiders of Nikola that have been paid in equity finally have a chance to sell their shares.

But a pullback in Nikola "could be a good buying opportunity," JPMorgan said.

The Cybertruck, Tesla's first electric pickup truck, is seen in this undated handout picture released by the company
  • There are currently six electric pickup trucks on the horizon in the US: Tesla's Cybertruck, Bollinger's B2, Lordstown Motor's Endurance, Ford's electric F-150, GMC's Hummer EV, and Rivian's R1T.
  • All of the vehicles have varying specifications and prices.
  • Of the 11 different specifications compared, Tesla's Cybertruck came out as "best in category" five times.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Tesla's Cybertruck isn't the only electric pickup truck that's set to be unleashed on the market in the next several years.

In fact, there are five other automakers — some relatively unknown — who are all vying to be the best upcoming electric pickup truck in the market. For example, Bollinger Motors announced it's fully-electric SUV "B1" and pickup truck "B2" at the same time in 2019, while Lordstown Motors unveiled its pickup truck Endurance in January.

Ford announced an electric version of its wildly popular F-150 but hasn't released any specs yet. GMC also unveiled the Hummer EV on October 20 with features not available on any other electric truck.

Ford-backed Rivian is also releasing its electric pickup truck, the R1T.

Nikola, a controversial newcomer, initially unveiled the Badger pickup, which the company said could have run on fuel cell hydrogen. However, on November 30, Nikola cancelled its plans for the vehicle.

3 coronavirus vaccines so far seem to prevent COVID-19. Here's how their efficacy compares to vaccines for flu, measles, and more.

A healthcare worker injects a patient with the Pfizer and BioNTech coronavirus vaccine during the phase 3 trial in Turkey in October.
  • AstraZeneca reported last week that its coronavirus vaccine candidate was 70% effective, on average, in preventing COVID-19 in clinical trials.
  • Moderna and Pfizer's vaccine candidates were found to be 94% and 95% effective, respectively.
  • The chart below shows how the efficacy of those vaccine candidates compares to the effectiveness of shots for chickenpox, flu, measles, and polio.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Three coronavirus vaccine candidates now lead the pack.

Moderna, a Massachusetts-based biotech firm, released updated results from its late-stage clinical trial on Monday. The data so far show its vaccine is 94.1% effective at preventing COVID-19.

AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford announced their early trial results last week, which show their vaccine to be 70% effective on average. The week prior, Pfizer and BioNTech announced their vaccine had a 95% efficacy rate.

The Food and Drug Administration has said any coronavirus shot must be at least 50% effective to get authorization. Most experts had hoped for 70% efficacy or higher.

Not all vaccines are equally effective. Some, like the seasonal flu vaccine, hover below 60%. Others, like the polio vaccine, are almost 100% effective.

Here's how the three coronavirus vaccine frontrunners compare to four existing vaccines.

How experts measure vaccine effectiveness

The polio vaccine has been distributed for 65 years — plenty of time for scientists to build a thorough understanding of its effectiveness. That's a measure of how much it reduces the incidence of cases among people who get vaccinated relative to those who do not.

The greater that reduction, the higher the vaccine's effectiveness.

Because the three coronavirus vaccine candidates have only been tested in clinical trials however, their reports center on a measure known as vaccine efficacy. It's a calculation of how effective the vaccine could be given ideal circumstances in which everyone is given the shot.

Moderna vaccine
A nurse prepares a coronavirus vaccine shot developed by the National Institutes of Health and Moderna Inc., July 2020.

Moderna's announcement was based on an analysis of 196 COVID-19 cases observed among 30,000 people in its phase 3 clinical trial. Some participants were given the company's experimental two-shot vaccine while others just got two placebo injections.

Out of those 196 cases, 185 were people who got placebo shots. Just 11 people who got COVID-19 had received Moderna's vaccine. The results also suggested that the vaccine prevented both mild COVID-19 and serious illness among participants. Researchers found 30 cases of severe COVID-19 among the placebo group and zero among those who got the vaccine.

Pfizer's results, meanwhile, were based on 170 cases of COVID-19 observed among more than 43,000 study participants. Its two-dose vaccine was found to prevent both mild and severe coronavirus infections, too.

AstraZeneca's trial results, based on 23,000 volunteers in Brazil and the UK, were more complicated. A dosing error during part of its trial meant that about 2,700 participants received a half-strength dose in their first shot, followed by a full-strength dose in their second. In that subgroup, the vaccine was 90% effective at preventing COVID-19, AstraZeneca said. But in a group of about 9,000 participants who got two full-strength doses, that efficacy rate was 62%.

The 70% figure is an average of the two.

It's still unclear whether any of the three vaccines prevents asymptomatic coronavirus infections, since trial participants were only tested for COVID-19 if they experienced symptoms.

A 2-dose regimen

Moderna coronavirus vaccine trial participant
Nurse Kath Olmstead gives volunteer Melissa Harting an injection of Moderna's experimental coronavirus vaccine, July 27, 2020, in Binghamton, New York.

All three of the leading vaccines require two shots. Pfizer's doses are given three weeks apart, while Moderna and AstraZeneca's are administered at least a month apart

Many other vaccines — including the one that protects against measles — also require back-to-back doses to be most effective. Two doses of the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine are 97% effective at protecting someone from measles, whereas a single dose is 93% effective.

Other coronavirus vaccine candidates still in trials are likely to require two shots as well. Novavax's phase 3 trial is testing two shots given three weeks apart. Johnson & Johnson, meanwhile, is testing both a single-dose and a two-dose vaccine in simultaneous phase 3 trials.

The coronavirus vaccine is likely to be more effective than a flu shot

Viruses mutate over time. As they replicate, minute errors are introduced into the virus' genetic code, and those can then spread through a virus' population. While most mutations are inconsequential, occasionally one can appear that undermines people's immunity. But the new coronavirus mutates slowly, which means a vaccine would most likely be effective long-term against any existing viral strains.

The flu, by contrast, mutates quickly, which is why a new vaccine is needed each year.

how does the flu shot work
A doctor gives a flu shot.

Moderna plans to file for emergency approval for its coronavirus vaccine on Monday, the company said in a statement. CEO Stephane Bancel said the company plans to produce 100 million doses — enough to vaccinate 50 million people — by the end of March 2021.

Pfizer and BioNTech asked the FDA to authorize their vaccine a week ago. Pfizer has said the bulk of the doses — up to 1.3 billion — will be ready sometime next year as well.

AstraZeneca, meanwhile, will likely run a second global trial, since the dosage error may have skewed its results, CEO Pascal Soriot said on Thursday.  The company still hopes to distribute 3 billion doses in 2021, however.

None of the three frontrunners have published their late-stage clinical trial data yet or submitted findings to a peer-reviewed medical journal. So questions remain about how long protection will last and to what degree the vaccines can prevent the coronavirus from spreading.

Former top admiral alarmed by Pentagon purge says Trump still has time to do something 'really destructive'

Retired Adm. Mike Mullen, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
  • Retired Navy Adm. Mike Mullen, a former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Sunday that Trump's recent personnel purge at the Pentagon was troubling.
  • "It's pretty difficult to think that over the course of 50 or 60 days you can do something constructive, but you can do something that's really destructive," Mullen said.
  • Retired Adm. William McRaven, the former head of US Special Operations Command, also said Sunday that he was "concerned" by the sudden changes.
  • Both said they were worried by the administration's rushed attempts to withdraw thousands of US troops from Iraq and Afghanistan.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Mike Mullen, a retired Navy admiral and formerly the top US military officer, sounded the alarm Sunday over the recent Pentagon leadership purge, noting that there is still time for President Donald Trump and his team to do "something that's really destructive."

"I'm actually very concerned about the Trump loyalists who have now gone to work in the Pentagon," Mullen, who served as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during both the Bush and Obama administrations, told Chuck Todd Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Earlier this month, Trump fired his defense secretary. The next day, the chief of staff to the secretary of defense and the top civilian Pentagon policy and intelligence officials resigned.

Those positions were filled by Trump loyalists, including retired Brig. Gen. Anthony Tata, a former Fox News commentator who spread falsehoods about former President Barack Obama, writing on social media that Obama was a "terrorist."

"There are some real Trump loyalists there now in charge," Mullen said. "It's pretty difficult to think that over the course of 50 or 60 days you can do something constructive, but you can do something that's really destructive."

As observers questioned the reasons behind the moves at the Pentagon, the administration began taking steps to pull thousands of US troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan.

On November 17, acting Secretary of Defense Christopher Miller, who arrived at the Pentagon only a week prior, announced that by the middle of January the troop levels in Afghanistan and Iraq will be down to 2,500 each.

"I just think we need to be very careful with that," Mullen said of the reductions.

"I'd like everybody to come home as well," he continued. "There are still terrorists who would do us ill. I want to play, actually, the game on their turf, and not play it here. If we just come home, my fear is that they arrive here in the United States."

"We've been through that before and I never want to see that happen again," he said.

Retired Adm. William McRaven, the former head of US Special Operations Command and Navy SEAL who oversaw the Osama bin Laden raid, said Sunday on ABC's "This Week" that he was also "concerned" by changes at the Pentagon.

He said that Trump had "taken out all the leadership in the Department of Defense" and replaced them with a new team, one lacking experience.

"The new team, you know, maybe they're good folks, but they are inexperienced," he said. "And what they're trying to do, of course, is to push forward President Trump's agenda, particularly when it comes to Iraq and Afghanistan and drawing down the number of troops."

"We can have reasonable policy discussions on how many people we ought to have in Iraq and Afghanistan," McRaven continued. "But what we don't want to do is we don't want to rush to failure. We don't want to pull everybody out of Afghanistan and risk putting the troops, you know, in greater harm's way."

"We've got to be thoughtful, we've got to be methodical about how we draw down the number of troops in Afghanistan," he said. "But what it appears is that this new administration in the Department of Defense is really rushing to get a lot of Trump's agenda resolved before a President Biden comes in."

Both Mullen and McRaven also raised concerns about the possibility of escalating tensions with Iran, which has been a serious issue at various points during Trump's presidency.

insider reviews allbirds running shoe dasher review

Like many startups, Allbirds rarely offers discounts. Instead, it creates charitable campaigns on days with increased shopping interest, including Cyber Monday. This year, it's introducing two styles of Tree Dashers, lightweight running shoes made from renewable tree material that will be available in limited quantities.

The campaign is very fitting with the company's ethos; Allbirds uses sustainable materials to create all of its products, such as recycled plastic and nylon, discarded snow crab shells, sustainably sourced wool, eucalyptus pulp, and the world's first carbon-negative green EVA. Last year, Allbirds even went carbon-neutral. And to further reduce our collective carbon footprints, Allbirds previously raised all of its prices by $1 for this year's Black Friday,  matching that extra dollar and sending the proceeds to Fridays For Future, the youth-led climate movement founded by climate activist Greta Thunberg.

We've tested almost everything the company makes over the last few years (including the Tree Dashers) and the consensus among our team of product reviewers is that you can't really go wrong with any of its products. But, our recent favorites are the Tree Runners, the Dasher Mizzles, the Wool Cardigan, and the Jumper. The prices may not be discounted, but we'd still consider its clothing and shoes to offer excellent value at full price.
