4 credit cards that get you free or discounted access to Delta Sky Club airport lounges

One of the benefits of Delta's two mainstream credit cards — the Gold Delta SkyMiles and the Platinum Delta SkyMiles cards from American Express — is the ability to purchase discounted access to Delta's Sky Club airport lounges.

Until recently, anyone could purchase one-time access to Sky Clubs for $59 at any lounge's front desk. However, these day passes were eliminated in mid-November 2018.

Fortunately, single-visit passes are still available for Gold and Platinum Delta SkyMiles cardholders. If you have one of those cards, you can buy access to the Sky Club for just $29 — about half the price of what used to be available to anyone flying Delta.

Those discounted lounge passes are great for travelers who occasionally fly Delta, or would only use the lounge access a few times each year — for instance, in case of delays, long connections, or a tendency to arrive for flights a bit early.

If you can see yourself using the Sky Club more often, you should instead consider Delta's premium card — the Delta Reserve Credit Card from American Express— which gives the cardholder complimentary access to Sky Clubs whenever they're flying Delta. That helps offset the card's $450 annual fee.

The Delta Reserve card comes with a few other perks, including a domestic first class companion pass, and higher upgrade priority for Delta Medallion members.

An alternative, if you're looking for the widest lounge access you can get from a credit card, the best option is the (not Delta-branded) Platinum Card® from American Express. In addition to Sky Club access whenever flying Delta, that card offers access to Priority Pass lounges, AmEx's own Centurion and International Lounges, and more. That's a network of over 1,200 lounges around the world.

The AmEx Platinum has a high $550 annual fee, but it's easy to get more value than that — in my first year with the card, I got over $2,000 in value. Right now, the card offers 60,000 AmEx Membership Rewards points after spending $5,000 in the first three months.

Here's every single new emoji we're getting in 2019

2019 emoji

  • More than 50 new emoji will be made standard in 2019, based on a list from the Unicode Consortium.
  • Many of the new emoji are tied together by the theme of inclusivity, introducing symbols for deaf people, blind people, and people in wheelchairs.
  • While Unicode made the new emoji official in March, it may be a while before they show up on your favorite device.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

More than 50 new emoji will become standard in 2019, based on the final list approved by the Unicode Consortium. Unicode is responsible for defining which emojis make onto all platforms, including iPhones, Android devices, and computers.

Many of the new icons are tied together by the theme of inclusivity, introducing emoji for deaf people, blind people, people in wheelchairs, and those with prosthetic limbs. This year's update will allow users to choose the race and gender of both people when choosing an emoji that features a couple. Unicode first introduced support for skin color in 2015, but users were limited to heterosexual emojis for couples, and could only select couples with the same skin tone.

While there are 59 distinct new emoji, variations for skin tone and gender make for a total of 230 individual images. A March update to Unicode made the emoji usable online, but each company will choose when to introduce its own version of the new emoji. (Apple typically adds new emojis to its iOS devices with a Fall update.)

Here are the new emoji coming online later this year, with images from Emojipedia:

The best overall

The Portable Cat Tail Glass Tea Cup and Strainer can be used with hot and cold drinks, and the built-in strainer makes making tea easy.

Fun, cute, and functional, the Portable Cat Tail Glass Tea Cup and Strainer is ideal for any tea lover. The perfect cup of tea, a good book, and a seat on the couch next to your cat? It's the perfect way to spend any afternoon, and this glass and strainer combination simplifies the process of making loose-leaf tea; you can bypass the teapot and just make tea directly in it. The strainer is conveniently contained in the top of the mug, so your tea will steep without you having to manually strain your drink. The strainer is removable, so you can use this cup without it for other beverages.

The cup is made of high-heat borosilicate glass, which is heat and explosion-proof for your safety. The BPA-free lid locks into place, so if you knock the cup over, it won't spill. An added bonus: The cup comes with a coaster, making it ideal for gift-giving.

The Portable Cat Tail Glass Tea Cup and Strainer has a 4.5 out of 5-star Amazon rating based on more than 300 reviews. One customer writes, "Great quality, air-tight seal on the lid, the strainer [is] small enough that even the tiniest tea leaves don't get through." Another customer says that the cup has held up well: "The best part about it is that once the lid is on you don't have to worry about leaks, it's great for on the go. And it's really made well, mine fell out of my truck onto the pavement and it didn't break."

Pros: Removable strainer is ideal for preparing loose-leaf tea in the cup, spill proof lid

Cons: Not microwave or dishwasher safe

Buy the BZY1 Portable Cat Tail Glass Tea Cup and Strainer on Amazon for $17.99

The best for cooking

Whimsical and practical, the Cat Stainless Steel Measuring Spoon Set will be used daily when you cook or bake.

It's easy to find cute cat-themed kitchen accessories that are barely functional. That's not the case with the Cat Stainless Steel Measuring Spoon Set. Not only is this set adorable, but it's also something that you're going to use regularly.

This four-spoon set includes a tablespoon, teaspoon, half-teaspoon, and quarter-teaspoon. The silicone rubber cats on top of each spoon make it easy to quickly spot the right spoon that you need, and the stainless steel construction ensures that you'll use them for years to come. Perhaps the best feature is that the spoons aren't connected; when you just need one, you only have to wash one spoon, rather than working with the entire set. These spoons are top-rack dishwasher safe.

The Cat Stainless Steel Measuring Spoon Set has a 4.8 out of 5 star Amazon rating based on 28 reviews. One customer writes, "These are incredibly easy to clean, as a quick rinse under hot water is all it takes! Nothing sticks to these spoons and everything just seamlessly slides right off them! No previous measuring spoons of mine have been even half this easy to clean."

Pros: Stainless steel construction, top-rack dishwasher safe for easy cleaning

Cons: Only 4 spoons in the set

Buy the Streamline Cat Stainless Steel Measuring Spoon Set on Amazon for $14.98

The best versatile accessory

Not only is the Boston Warehouse Cat Countertop Storage Basket adorable, but it's also versatile and can be used to store countless kitchen items.

Fruit bowl? Coffee pod holder? Utensil holder? The Boston Warehouse Cat Countertop Storage Basket can do that and more. The key to this basket's value is its versatility. You can use it for K-cups, fruit, vegetables, and just about anything that needs containing. With its adorable cat theme, this basket will dress up your countertop and is sure to become a conversation piece.

This storage basket's design gives it a generous capacity, but it takes up minimal counter space. The black finish and overall design fit into many existing kitchen decor schemes, and it's durable enough for years of use.

The Boston Warehouse Cat Countertop Storage Basket has a 4.7 out of 5-star Amazon rating based on more than 700 customer reviews. One customer says the basket make a great conversation piece, while another commented it's bigger and heavier than expected, but appreciated the durable construction.

Pros: Takes up minimal counter space, durable, sturdy construction, highly versatile

Cons: Hand wash only

The best for bakers

The R&M International When the Cat's Away Cookie Cutters add plenty of cat-themed fun to baking cookies.

For anyone who shares a love of both cookies and cats, the When the Cat's Away Cookie Cutters from R&M International will add a fun twist to cookie baking. This set of six cookie cutters features five unique cat poses and one mouse. Whatever the festivity you're baking cookies for, these are sure to add some whimsy.

Don't restrict yourself to just cookies. You can use the cutters to make boring sandwiches look more appealing to picky eaters (e.g., kids), or even use them in crafting projects that call for shaping dough or clay.

These cookie cutters are each about 4 inches in size. They are tin-plated steel, making them durable enough to last for years.

The R&M International When the Cat's Away Cookie Cutters have a 4.6 out of 5 star Amazon rating based on 170 reviews. One customer, who proclaims to be a professional baker, gives a helpful tip: "I like that these are no-nonsense dishwasher-safe metal cutters with a rolled edge on top (to save you from hurting your hands). I suspect the mouse's tail is going to be inclined to get stuck in the cutter, and also to burn — it's too small compared with the rest of the cookie. It might be better to cut off the mouse's tail and just give him a licorice whip or something, but that's up to the cookie baker."

Pros: Great variety of poses for fun cookies, tin-plated steel for durability, excellent price for the set

Cons: Not as sturdy as some top-quality cookie cutters, hand-wash only

Buy the R&M International When the Cat's Away Cookie Cutters on Amazon for $6.71

The best decorative accessory

Decorative yet also functional, the Artori Design Cat vs Crow Paper Towel Stand brings an artistic touch to your kitchen counter.

The Artori Design Cat vs Crow Paper Towel Stand will show off your love of cats in a classic, artistic way. With a throwback to a scene straight out of the 1800s, the silhouette of a cat watching a crow on a lamppost makes a charming addition to your kitchen counter, your table, or wherever else you decide to place it.

This stand is made of metal and it comes fully assembled. It weighs just over 1 pound, giving it the stability needed to securely hold a full roll of paper towel. Choose from a black, gray, or red finish to complement your kitchen decor.

The Artori Design Cat vs Crow Paper Towel Stand doesn't have a lot of customer reviews, but 67% of them gave the product 5 stars. One customer writes, "It is perfect and looks better than in the picture. It is well balanced. Paper towels go on and off easily."

Pros: Artistic design, easy to use, comes fully assembled

Cons: Metal is a bit thin, pricey accessory

Sundar Pichai

  • Google CEO Sundar Pichai reportedly sent an email to LGBTQ employees saying the company would be taking a "hard look" at its harassment policies and work more closely with internal LGBTQ groups.
  • The email comes one week after YouTube's controversial decision not to remove videos of conservative commentator Steven Crowder that contained homophobic slurs aimed at Vox journalist, Carlos Maza.
  • "With respect to YouTube, Susan and the team are already taking a hard look at the harassment policies and will do this in consultation with many groups, including people who have themselves experienced harassment," Pichai wrote.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

One week after YouTube's controversial decision not to remove videos that contained homophobic slurs, Google CEO Sundar Pichai reportedly sent an email to LGBTQ employees saying the company was taking a "hard look" at its harassment policies and would work more closely with internal LGBTQ groups.

"With respect to YouTube, Susan and the team are already taking a hard look at the harassment policies and will do this in consultation with many groups, including people who have themselves experienced harassment," Pichai said in the emai obtained by the Verge. "We're also thinking through ways to engage more with our LGBTQ+ community at important moments."

It was not clear from the report if Pichai's email was sent to all Google employees, addressed to LGBTQ+ employees, or if the email was sent only to a specific group of individuals at Google.

On Monday, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki apologized at a tech conference in Arizona for the hurt caused by her team's decision not to take down videos from conservative commentator Steven Crowder, though she said that based on the company's current policies, she stood by the decision.

According to the Verge, Pichai and members of his leadership team (not including Wojcicki) met with members of the company's LGBTQ groups on Tuesday to discuss a "pattern" of issues and how it can consult with internal LGBTQ leaders on policy decisions.

Pichai also echoed Wojcicki's apology and said he "especially regret[ed]" the incident taking place during Pride month, according to the email.

Google did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

Winc helped me figure out which types of wine I like best and what food to pair them with — here's how the popular online wine club works

winc review 2

  • Every month, online winery and wine club Winc sends you a box of wines (starting at $13 per bottle) that are personalized to your tastes and preferences. It offers a wide variety of wines, including red, white, rosé, sparkling, and vegan.
  • The process starts with a Palate Profile and continually adapts as you try and rate new bottles of wine.
  • The service makes learning about wine approachable and convenient. I used Winc to hone in on the specific types of wine I like and understand how to pair them with food.

One of the most popular wine clubs in the nation doesn't require you to flash receipts for all the vineyards you've visited in the past year. In fact, the less you know about wine, the more you'll probably enjoy Winc, an online winery and wine club that wants to make exploring wine simpler and more enjoyable.

Winc is a California-based winery cofounded by sommelier Brian Smith. It uses an online Palate Profile and your own ratings to recommend and ship the best wines for your tastes, so you don't spend an inordinate amount of time in the wine aisle deciphering labels and ultimately just choosing the one that looks the prettiest. There's no fee or commitment to join, and you can skip the month's shipment any time you want.

winc review 3

Though I wouldn't call myself a complete amateur and I know generally what types of wine I like, I am also eons away from becoming that person at the party who casually swishes her glass and rattles off tasting notes (I am more often the person who gushes over the cheese and charcuterie paired with the wine, or the exact example above who judges a bottle by its packaging).

But I do enjoy popping a bottle open for special and casual occasions alike, so I thought I'd give Winc a try.

The first step when joining Winc is to fill out your Palate Profile.

The short questionnaire asks things like how you like your coffee, and how much you like flavors such as citrus and mushrooms.

Then, Winc offers a selection of wine bottles it thinks you should try. Winc works with vineyards and winemakers all over the world to source these bottles and also make its own varietals. You can read up on the details of each bottle — its tasting notes, ratings from other Winc members, its body and sweetness levels — before deciding whether to add it to your shipment.

Receiving your box of Winc wine

Your monthly box must include a minimum of three bottles, but you can add as many additional bottles as you'd like. Shipping is $9 for orders of three bottles and free for any order larger than that.

The bottles arrive securely packed in a box (that also has a carry handle for convenient transport), along with a fun A-Z guide of important wine and Winc terms.

winc review

I don't usually love heavy, full-bodied wines, so I opted for lighter, medium-bodied bottles and a diverse variety of tasting notes. On your Winc profile, you can revisit the details of each wine and also figure out what types of food to pair it with. Winc provides a Food52 recipe for each bottle, a helpful touch that also appealed to my love of food.

winc review

winc review

The 2018 Cape Route Chenin Blanc, with its light, dry, and fruity taste, was the perfect bottle to bring along for a snack-filled picnic in Central Park, while the 2017 Far + Wide Touriga Nacional, was a nice light red for a heartier lamb dinner at home. My other pick, the 2018 The Bluffer Valdiguié, turned out to be a little too tart and bright for my taste ...

... and that's okay because I was able to rate these bottles on my Winc profile so I could get better recommendations for my next box.

In addition to a star rating, you can enter notes to refer back to later.

The next time you visit the Wines page, your recommended bottles will float right to the top, making it easy to add them to your box. Other than the provided recommendations, feel free to browse the rest of Winc's wines, which include categories like Sparkling, Under $20, Vegan, and California.

winc review 4

While the default shipping schedule of Winc is once monthly, it does offer a Ship Now feature, in case you have a party you want to be well-stocked for or just want to enjoy more wine.

There's no need to be stuffy about or intimidated by wine — Winc's easy-to-use wine shopping platform lets you get past your limited wine experience to fully enjoy a glass (or two, or three).

Its wine is also pretty affordable, starting at just $13 and maxing out around $45 per bottle. If you want to discover your next favorite wine without spending a lot of money or pulling your hair out over its complexities, there's no better than place than Winc.

The Ford Ranger is an excellent midsize pickup truck — here are its best features (F)

Ford Ranger

  • The 2019 Ford Ranger is the Blue Oval's return to the midsize-pickup-truck market in the US.
  • The segment is quite large. Folks who enjoy what pickups can do, such as hauling around mountain bikes and going on Home Depot runs, but don't want an F-150 or a Silverado in the driveway.
  • The 2019 Lariat SuperCrew four-wheel-drive Ranger I recently tested was nicely equipped and cost almost $45,000. But it was loaded with great features.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

At Business Insider, we avidly anticipated the new Ford Ranger, which is actually a built-in-America version of a global pickup that Ford has been selling outside the US. The Blue Oval is already super-strong in full-size trucks — can you say "F-150"? — and back in the day, the Ranger was a popular starter pickup.

In 2019, the entire pickup-truck market is driving US sales, and the midsize offerings are much improved over the little pickups that used to cover this segment. They're really more like shrunken-down full-sizers, and where Chevy (as well as GMC, with the Canyon) and Ford are concerned, the idea is to offer a solid hauler that's simply more compact than a big boy.

We've sampled pretty much everything the market has to offer on this front, so a key question was, "What does Ford bring to the party with the new Ranger?"

The answer is a great truck, with some great features.

FOLLOW US: On Facebook for more car and transportation content!

In May, I checked out the impressive 2019 Lariat SuperCrew four-wheel-drive Ranger, nicely equipped and stickering at almost $45,000. The base-price pickup is a little more than $24,000. I couldn't find much to complain about. And I found lots to like.

Read the review »

1. The Ranger's design. The styling of this midsize truck isn't wild or radical. But it is solid, and my tester looked sharp in "Lightning Blue."

2. The "Ranger" call-out across the liftgate. This is a cool thing, as well as a throwback to day when pickups proudly announced themselves to whomever might be in the rearview mirror.

3. The versatile, lined short-box and bed. The SuperCrew configuration that I tested sported a 5-foot bed, but the Ranger can be had with a two-door cab and a 6-foot bed. I used the Ranger for both a run to Costco and to transport some furniture about 120 miles.

4. The 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine is a turbocharged power plant that cranks out 275 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. Towing capacity is 7,500 pounds — enough to tow just about anything owners of the Ranger would want to.

5. Superb ground clearance. With hefty off-road tires, the Ranger is prepared to leave the pavement.

6. Serious four-wheel-drive. The Ranger boasts a solid 4x4 system — FX4 — with a locking differential. The package adds another grand or so to the price.

7. A no-nonsense, easy-to-care for interior. The Ranger's cabin is comfortable and well-appointed, but far from fussy.

8. The smooth-shifting 10-speed transmission. Combined with the turbocharged engine, this powertrain yields 20 mpg city, 24 highway, and 22 combined.

9. Ford's Sync 3 infotainment system. In the Ranger, it runs on an 8-inch touchscreen. Sync 3 is one of the best in the industry. It provides superb navigation, easy Bluetooth connectivity, and AUX and USB device-connection options.

Sync 3 also offers a suite of apps and has both CarPlay and Android Auto available. And the 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system in my test truck is a terrific extra. It sounds too good for a truck this small!

10. The old-school parking brake!

What a truck!

In my review, I wrote that "Ranger is a winner."

I added, "It's going to compare favorably with the Chevy Colorado and provide a much nicer package than the Toyota Tacoma (although the Tacoma is noted for its toughness, so the new Ranger should require some time to distinguish itself on that front)."

The Ranger has been available outside the US for a while, but with its return to our shores, Ford made sure to outfit the pickup with a nice range of appealing features.

These golf clothes look just like regular clothing but with unique fabric that wicks away moisture and sweat

Insider Picks writes about products and services to help you navigate when shopping online. Insider Inc. receives a commission from our affiliate partners when you buy through our links, but our reporting and recommendations are always independent and objective.

TravisMatthew

  • TravisMathew is known for its stylish golf clothes, but it looks just as good off the green too.
  • The clothes are comfortable, wrinkle-resistant, and stylish. They're also reasonably-priced for the quality and durability.
  • My boyfriend tried and loved its polos, pants, and jackets, but we'd recommend checking out the rest of the brand too.

While TravisMathew may be known best as a golf brand, you won't want to put this company in a corner. In fact, most of the pieces look just as good off the golf course because of their versatility, comfort, and fit.

The brand was founded in southern California in 2007, and it's clear that TravisMathew draws quite a bit of inspiration from its idyllic setting. I've been consistently impressed by the quality of the designs, but also the lightweight construction and breathable fabrics.

From polos to button-down shirts to pants, all of TravisMathew's gear is clearly designed with an active lifestyle in mind. Pieces are comfortable to wear all throughout long days, but still elegant enough to transition easily into evening activities as well like happy hour or nice dinners.

Case in point — the Beckladdium pant ($124.95). Inspired by the Beck short ($84.95, and also worth checking out), these pants are comfortable and casual enough to wear on a day at the golf course but still refined enough to wear to the office. My boyfriend wore these recently and loved that the five-pocket pant is lightweight and dries quickly, which will come in handy if you're caught in a summer storm, or more realistically, just sweating up a storm.

These pants are also wrinkle-resistant, which makes them ideal for long days sitting at a desk as well as traveling. Just throw them in your suitcase and rest assured that when you've arrived at your destination, you'll look kept and polished.

The leg of the Beckladdium is just tapered enough to look tailored without being constricting, and thanks to enhanced stretch, they're comfortable all day long. My boyfriend especially appreciates that these pants are available in a range of classic colors, some of which look more formal than others. For a more laid back look, the Khaki is a safe bet, whereas the Vintage Indigo looks a little more refined.

Also worth a shoutout are TravisMathew's polos (starting at $84.95).

Before you write off all polos as being identical to one another, you may want to check these because of the performance fabric construction. Perfect for warmer days due to the wrinkle-resistant and moisture-wicking material, these shirts also have enough stretch for you to feel comfortable without looking baggy.

Whereas other collars seem to stretch quickly after a few wears and washes, TravisMathew's polos have managed to stand up to several cycles in the laundry. Plus, the breathability of the cotton-and-polyester performance fabric makes it ideal on days where you have to look presentable but can't even think about wearing a traditional button-down without sweating.

The Panka polo in Heather Persimmon ($84.95) hue is a personal favorite, though if you're looking for something a bit less understated, you could also opt for the Twinkle Toes in Grey Pinstripe ($94.95).Regardless of what color you choose, however, the real draw of these polos is in the fabric and fit.

And when the temperature starts cooling down at night, TravisMathew also has a wide selection of outerwear too.

My boyfriend is particularly fond of the Salvo jacket ($164.95), a reversible lightweight zip jacket made for the golf course, but looks like something you'd wear during the week when you're at the office. While you might be concerned about throwing some of your other golf jackets in the wash, the Salvo is totally machine washer-friendly, and as with all TravisMathew clothes, also wrinkle resistant. We loved the stretchiness of this jacket, as it allows for more layering during cooler days and nights.

My boyfriend really liked all his pieces from TravisMathew, and found that they held up to the brand's comfort and versatility claims well. He'll definitely be wearing them all throughout the summer — no sweat.

apple macbook pro with touchbar

  • Although a Mac's Safari browser blocks pop-ups by default, pop-ups can be useful, so it's good to know how to allow pop-ups on a Mac.
  • If you want to allow all pop-ups on your Mac computer's Safari browser, or allow pop-ups on a select few websites, you can do so in Safari's preferences.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Most of the time the default site pop-up blocker on Mac's Safari is useful. It can save you from unwanted advertisements, protect you from potential scams and phishing attempts, or just reduce distractions.

Other times, pop-up blockers have the ability to hinder workflow and various other tasks. Many banks, universities, and retail sites, like Amazon, use pop-ups to open customer service chats, for example.

If you'd like to allow pop-ups on your Mac when using Safari, you can do so by accessing Safari's Preferences menu. Here's how to do it.

How to allow pop-ups on Mac in a Safari browser

1. Launch Safari.

2. In your menu bar at the top of the screen, click "Safari." Find and click "Preferences" in the drop-down menu.

Popup1

3. Once in Preferences, click on "Websites" — the icon that looks like a globe.

How to share an iCloud calendar on your iPhone to coordinate plans or events, and customize its sharing settings

icloud iphone calendar

  • You can easily share an iCloud calendar on an iPhone to coordinate plans and events with colleagues, friends, and family.
  • When you share an iCloud calendar on your iPhone, you can also customize the calendar's sharing settings to change the editing permissions and access levels you grant others.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

These days, most of us are so busy with work obligations, family events, and social plans that we rely on our calendars to stay on top of our schedules.

If you have an iPhone, you may want to take advantage of iOS's iCloud calendar, which allows you to sync your calendar between Apple devices so you're never caught out not knowing what you have planned for a particular date.

Sometimes you might want to share that calendar with a colleague, friend, or family member to coordinate your schedules, especially if you're trying to eke out time for a vacation, find a date for an upcoming meeting, or starting a new position with a varied shift schedule.

Thankfully, sharing your iCloud calendar is a simple process that shouldn't take long at all. But note that this process only applies to calendars run through your iCloud account — if you're using a Google or Outlook calendar, for example, that's synced to your iPhone, you'll have to share through those services.

How to share an iCloud calendar on an iPhone

1. From your iPhone's home screen, launch the Calendar app.

2. Once in the app, look for the "Calendars" option in the center of the bottom of the screen and tap it to see the current calendars active and syncing to your iPhone.

IMG_6666

3. Locate the specific iCloud calendar you want to share and click the info button on the right-hand side, represented by a small letter "i" in the middle of a circle.

4. Once in the settings screen for the calendar you want to share, click on the "Add Person" option and enter the email address or name of the person in your contacts list that you want to have access. Alternately, you can click the small '+' sign on the right side of the screen to browse through your contact list and choose the person or persons you wish to share with that way.

IMG_6667

5. Tap "Add" to finalize the addition of a new person to your iCloud calendar.

How to change the sharing settings on an iCloud calendar

Once you've given someone access to your calendar, it's easy to change their editing permissions or even remove their access to the calendar altogether.

To allow a shared person to edit your calendar, click on their name within the calendar's edit screen as outlined above. On the following screen, there is a button which says "Allow Editing." When the button is green, you are allowing that person to edit your calendar.

Tap this button again to turn it gray, indicating that the person in question can access the calendar to view it but cannot make edits or changes.

IMG_6669.PNG

Similarly, if you want to remove a person's access altogether, click the "Stop Sharing" button at the bottom of the edit screen and they will no longer have viewing or editing access to your iCloud calendar.

We took another look at Bellroy, the maker of our favorite wallet, and we remain impressed

bellroy review

Bellroy is one of my favorite accessory brands, and I'm not alone. It's been a top choice on Insider Picks since the shopping-advice vertical was launched in 2014.

We've been obsessed with the brand for a while, to the point that we've written about them a number of times — we've lost count — and tested most of its products. Bellroy's Slim Sleeve is even our pick for the best men's wallet.

An Australian-based startup founded in 2010, Bellroy has expanded from wallets to backpacks, briefcases, phone cases, and more, and has increased its distribution around the world.

Given this expansion, the Insider Picks team thought it was high time to make sure that Bellroy's quality has held over the years. Some of us are still using our original wallets from earlier this decade, but are the company's products still up to par?

In a word, yes. We're still tremendously impressed by Bellroy's designs, attention to detail, choice of material, and manufacturing quality. We took a look at a few of the brand's products; keep reading to see exactly what we thought about each of them.

Click over to Bellroy's website to browse the full collection, or head over to Amazon to shop.

Designer's Edition Slim Sleeve Wallet

Designer's Edition Slim Sleeve Wallet, $139, on Bellroy

I've used the Slim Sleeve ($79) as my primary wallet for a few years now, and it's held up impressively well. Bellroy has since developed "Designer's Editions" of a few of its products, so I figured it couldn't hurt to compare the "DE" Slim Sleeve to the original.

Like the original Slim Sleeve, the Designer's Edition is a well-designed, clever wallet, which makes the most of its small footprint to hold cash and 4–12 cards, but still fit comfortably in a front pocket. The leather is definitely an upgrade, with enhanced details. It would make a great gift for a guy's birthday, or something like a graduation or Father's Day. That said, the original edition is still excellent, and at $60 less expensive, it's probably a better option for most people. — David Slotnick, senior reporter

Slim Sleeve Wallet

Slim Sleeve Wallet, $79, on Bellroy or Amazon

This wallet is a workhorse that lasts a long time. I used the Slim Sleeve for four years, and after putting it through some extensive abuse, it was finally time to say goodbye and replace it with a new one. The wallet is the perfect size to fit in my front pocket and carry all the cards and cash I need. It accommodates pounds and Euros pretty well, too, so it's also a great travel companion. I'm glad to see that Bellroy still has the same great leather and sturdy stitching. —Breton Fischetti, VP of Insider Picks

Leather Clutch

Leather Clutch, $189, on Bellroy or Amazon

If I don't have to carry a large bag with me, I try not to. There are only a few things I really need for events or nights out: ID, credit card, keys, cash, and small makeup items. This clutch is the slim, well-designed accessory to hold and organize it all.

I like the dedicated slots to keep my cards separated and ready to access in seconds, and my favorite feature is the floating central divider with a magnetic closure. You can store escape-prone essentials like your phone or coins here, but I personally use it only for my very important apartment key. Loop it around your wrist for extra security and comfort, and you're on your way to a night that doesn't end with a frantic game of lost-and-found. — Connie Chen, reporter

Travel Folio

Travel Folio, $139, on Bellroy or Amazon

I was so confident that this wallet was all I needed when I traveled to Italy recently that I left my day-to-day wallet at home. It fit two passports, two boarding passes, cash, four cards, hotel keys, and I still had room to keep the cute little notebook and pen it came with tucked in. It made getting through all the airport check-in and security processes easier and smoother since I could hold everything that my partner and I would need to hand over all in one place.

For what it's worth, I had gotten a really beautiful (but minimal) passport and ticket holder during the holidays in anticipation of my trip to Italy, but I ended up liking the versatility of this Bellroy travel wallet so much that I don't even know if I'll ever use that passport holder. A small reminder that sometimes function outweighs fashion. — Sally Kaplan, editor

Pocket Wallet

Pocket Wallet, $119, on Bellroy or Amazon

This wallet doesn't fit my giant iPhone Plus, but I'd still give it the distinction of being the perfect size. It fits all my essential cards and cash, and could comfortably fit a passport if needed. It has two vertical slots for easy access to cards (I keep credit and debit in one, and transportation and laundry cards in the other) and central "divider floats" that work like extra pockets when necessary and keep the rest of the wallet flexible.

There's no separate pocket for change, but the slender shape is worth the chance of occasional inconvenience. All in all, it's the perfect solution for someone like me who only wants to leave the house with the essentials — but may occasionally need more wiggle room than a card case.  Mara Leighton, reporter

Tall Wallet

Tall Wallet, $79, on Bellroy or Amazon

Until I tried out Bellroy's "The Tall" wallet, I had been using a passport wallet my friend made for me, which I still adore and hold dearly, but was growing a bit cumbersome for day-to-day use. I was able to pack it with a notepad and a passport, which, sentimental value aside, is why I liked it in the first place. But I'm not traveling so much at the moment, and switching over to a more slimline wallet seemed more practical.

Bellroy's wallets are made with a high-end, full-grain leather that's soft enough (and lies flat enough) that it's not too bulky. What I like most are the two pockets in the billfold, which are good for coins, but more importantly to me, small things I might otherwise lose, such as SD cards for my camera, or SIM cards when I'm traveling between different countries. I'm pleasantly surprised with how much I can manage to store in this wallet, and I'll hang onto it for as long as I can. — Owen Burke, senior reporter

Phone Case — 3 Cards

Phone Case — 3 Card, $79, on Bellroy or Amazon

I treat my phone like a wallet; typically I use a folio-style case, but those can be bulky. Bellroy's 3-card phone case is only slightly larger than a regular case, and I can easily fit a credit card, ID, and MetroCard in it, with room to spare. At first, I was nervous that the trap-door mechanism wasn't as reliable as a folio case, but it's held up great. And I appreciate the added benefit of being able to use it like a kickstand to prop my phone up when needed. — Lauren Lyons Cole, director of Personal Finance Insider

Folio Wallet

Folio Wallet, $149, on Bellroy or Amazon

I got the Folio Wallet in a bright, burnt orange color called "Tangelo," which was a bold move since I typically stick with neutrals. I wasn't disappointed with my decision and was surprised to see that the bright color still looked sharp enough to take into professional environments. Though the outward appearance of the wallet was certainly a draw, the utility is the true star. The wallet holds up to 16 cards; even when I filled it to the brim, it held its shape and didn't show any signs of bulging that you see in other overly stuffed accessories. The fact that I can carry it in my purse or as a clutch is another big selling point for me. — Megan Foster, intern

Allbirds vs. Rothy's — we break down which online shoe startup makes better women’s flats

Allbirds vs. Rothy's 4x3

  • Two popular online shoe startups, Rothy's and Allbirds, make women's flats.
  • Ranging in price from $95-$145, they're likely not a purchase you can simply make on the fly.
  • To help you make an informed decision and buy a pair of flats you'll love, we've compared their most important features, like what they're made of and how they feel.
  • Allbirds Tree Breezers ($95) are soft and cushion-y, with an almost sock-like feel and the added plus of an under-$100 price point. However, if you want more color and print options and a less cushioned (but still comfortable) feel, try one of Rothy's flats ($125-$145).

Of all the types of shoes in my closet, the ones I could most easily see myself writing a lengthy love letter to are my flats.

Anyone who has ever owned a pair of comfortable flats knows what I'm talking about. They're the easiest shoes to put on and take off, they can work for casual or formal settings, they barely take up any space in a suitcase, and if we're talking about the right pair, they won't make your feet light up with pain every time you take a step.

These types of flats aren't easy to find, but we've been lucky enough to have collected some true gems and favorites. Quite a few are made by newer brands, like Everlane and Rothy's.

Rothy's has been making women's flats for four years now, and up until recently, was arguably the startup to find stylish and comfortable knit flats.

However, in May 2019, a strong challenger by the name of Allbirds entered the ring. Hearing that it was coming out with knit flats of its own, we knew we had to try them out and immediately began drawing comparisons with Rothy's flats.

If you're stuck between Rothy's and Allbirds, we've broken them down by a few factors (color and style options, fabric construction, feel, and price) so you can determine which one is best for your use and budget.

Our team really likes both so we can't give a conclusive answer on which is better — it all depends on your specific preferences. For a few more women's flats options to consider, check out our guide to the best flats you can buy

Meet the companies, Rothy's and Allbirds.

Rothy's and Allbirds have a lot in common. Both founded in 2015 in the San Francisco Bay Area, the startups quickly became popular in the area for their practical and sustainable approach to footwear and gained the funding to prove their future potential. They've also found an audience in East Coast cities like New York, where the culture of walking makes the search for cute and comfortable flats even more dire.

In addition to women's flats, Rothy's sells loafers, sneakers, and kids' shoes. While Rothy's is best known for its flats, Allbirds is best known for its sneakers, and flats are a brand-new foray into non-sneaker styles. It makes men's and women's wool and eucalyptus sneakers, as well as children's wool sneakers.

Read more: 11 San Francisco-based clothing startups that prove New York City isn't the only capital of fashion

The flats look pretty similar, but if you take a closer look, the silhouettes have subtle differences, and you also have different color options to consider.

Rothy's makes two different flat styles: rounded toe flats ($125) and pointed toe flats ($145), letting you decide between a versatile, everyday flat or something better suited to polished occasions. They come in a variety of neutral and bright colors, as well as flashy prints such as a spotted leopard print. These colors and prints rotate out from time to time, so there are always new ones to choose from. The colors of the insoles depend on the style — sometimes they match the uppers and other times they don't. You can also buy extra insoles in different colors here.

An easy way to identify Rothy's flats are the blue stripe at the heel of the shoe and the knit fabric. Both flats have an angular, V-style opening, which can help your feet look longer or more slender.

Allbirdsmakes one flat style, the Tree Breezer ($95), currently available in four colors. Allbirds has a history of releasing limited-edition colors quite often, so check its site, social media, or the Insider Picks page to find the latest options.

Its flat has a rounded toe and rounded opening, with a mesh knit fabric that's more noticeable than Rothy's. The "collar" of the opening is also more obvious and is made from a ribbed knit, so it hugs your foot more closely. The insole is Allbirds' standard gray insole.

Plastic water bottles and eucalyptus: how Rothy's and Allbirds make innovative use of these two materials.

Both companies pride themselves on using sustainable materials to make comfortable shoes. Conveniently, both their shoes are machine-washable (but take the insoles out first), making it easy to keep them in top shape.

Rothy's construction:

  • Uppers: 3D-knitted fabric made from recycled plastic water bottles. As of this writing, Rothy's has repurposed more than 30 million water bottles.
  • Insoles: Recycled plastic water bottles and recyclable foam
  • Outsoles: Recycled, carbon-free rubber

Allbirdsconstruction:

  • Uppers: Knit fabric made from sustainably harvested eucalyptus pulp
  • Insoles: Merino wool and castor bean oil
  • Outsoles: "SweetFoam" made from Brazilian sugarcane

Their sustainable construction doesn't detract from their comfort.

Both companies' flats are light, really comfortable, and made for all-day wear — we wouldn't be writing about them if they weren't. Thanks to their unique designs, however, they do feel comfortable in different ways. You can get both Rothy's and Allbirds in half sizes (a first for Allbirds).

Rothy's fit true to size, but if you have wide feet or fear toe crowding in the pointed flat style, you should go up half a size. They mold to your foot and are breathable, with slight give so you can still wiggle your toes around in them. They're great for summertime wear since they stay slick and dry. I've been wearing and washing mine for nearly a year and they don't stretch out.

Allbirds recommends going up half a size for its flats, which tend toward a more snug feel. The cushioned insoles are supportive, and the overall feel of the flat is softer and thicker than Rothy's. If you plan on being very active, you might like Allbirds' flats more because of the aforementioned collar that grasps onto your foot.

You'll pay around $100 for Rothy's and Allbirds flats.

Rothy'srounded toe flats retail for $125 and the pointed toe flats retail for $145.

Allbirds flats, like all Allbirds shoes, cost $95.

If you don't want to spend more than $100, Allbirds are the obvious choice, but there's the trade-off of fewer color and print options, not to mention the fact that they tend to sell out more quickly. If you're willing to spend $30 to $50 more for Rothy's, you've widened your options and are likely to receive your shoes more quickly.

$100 is probably more than you're used to paying for a pair of flats, but sustainable clothing does tend to be more expensive, and both brands' shoes are durable and well made.

The bottom line

We love both Rothy's and Allbirds flats and wear them often. If you're already familiar with the feel of Allbirds sneakers and like that, you should go with the Allbirds Tree Breezers. They're soft and cushion-y, with an almost sock-like feel and the added plus of an under-$100 price point. However, if you want more color and print options and a less cushioned (but still comfortable) feel, try one of Rothy's flats.

An astounding number of bankruptcies are being driven by student loan debt

college graduates

The student loan debt crisis in America continues to get uglier.

According to a new LendEDU study, 32% of consumers filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy carry student loan debt. Of that group, student loan debt comprised 49% of their total debt on average.

As of 2019, student loan debt is at an all-time high with a national total of $1.5 trillion. According to Student Loan Hero, the average student-loan debt per graduating student in 2018 who took out loans was a whopping $29,800.

The LendEDU data illuminates the dire effects of the growing burden of student loan debt. Coupled with a high cost of living and the fallout of the recession, student loans make it harder for millennials to save and put them financially behind — to the point where they may need to declare bankruptcy to be able to pay them off.

Digging into the data

To determine these findings, LendEDU analyzed 1,083 individual bankruptcy cases from Upsolve, a non-profit that helps low-income consumers file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy — liquidation bankruptcy for people with limited incomes who can't pay back all or a portion of their debt. The goal of Chapter 7 bankruptcy is to discharge the debt.

Note that this does not include data for consumers who file for Chapter 13 bankruptcy, which involves a restructuring of debt — the consumer makes payments for three or five years, with the goal of getting the debt discharged at the end.

However, student loan debts are generally non-dischargeable in bankruptcy, attorney Simon Goldenberg of The Law Office of Simon Goldenberg, PLLC, told Business Insider. Those seeking to discharge their credit cards and other unsecured debts would free up their budget to pay student loans, he said.

So if the 32% of student loan debt-carrying consumers filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy through Upsolve get their debts discharged, they still need to repay nearly half of their debt, since it's comprised of student loans.

Student loan debt has reached record levels

Student loan debt is one aspect of The Great American Affordability Crisis plaguing millennials.

College tuition has more than doubled since the 1980s, Business Insider previously reported. Consequently, millennials have taken on at least 300% more student debt than their parents, according to Michael Hobbes of HuffPost. Baby boomers had to work only 306 hours at minimum wage to pay off four years of college, he found, while millennials would have to work 4,459 hours.

More than half of indebted millennial respondents in an INSIDER and Morning Consult survey said attending college wasn't worth the student loans.

And some borrowers are even fleeing the US to keep from paying off their student loans, Business Insider's Allana Akhtar reported, citing a CNBC report.

Chase has announced the Freedom credit card's Q3 bonus categories — including 5% cash back at gas stations

Business Insider may receive a commission from The Points Guy Affiliate Network if you apply for a credit card, but our reporting and recommendations are always independent and objective.

Chase freedom

  • The Chase Freedom card offers 5% cash back — or 5x points — in different categories each quarter.
  • The categories for Q3 — July through September 2019 — have just been announced.
  • You can combine your cash back with the points earned from cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve, making it even more valuable.

Summer is pretty much here, with July just around the corner. That means that it's time to start thinking about your credit card's rotating quarterly bonus categories.

Chase issues two strong cash-back cards — the Chase Freedom and Chase Freedom Unlimited. Although they're both marketed as cash-back, they actually earn points that you can redeem for cash — or, if you have a premium Chase card, you can combine points from the two cards.

While the Freedom and Freedom Unlimited are slightly different, they're both great options and both earn points quickly — I personally have both cards.

What's unique about the regular Freedom is that while it generally earns 1% cash back — or 1x Chase Ultimate Rewards point per dollar spent, if you combine that "cash back" with the points you'll earn from a card like the Sapphire Reserve— it earns 5% (or 5x points) in a different bonus category each quarter.

Chase has announced that this year's Q3 bonus categories are:

  • Select streaming services (including Netflix, Hulu, Spotify, and more)
  • Gas stations

Any purchases that fall into those three categories will be eligible to earn 5% throughout July, August, and September. The category list may be a short one, but it's potentially lucrative — especially for those who drive a lot.

The bonus is capped at $1,500 of spend each quarter. After that, you'll still earn the normal 1% back. Keep in mind that in order to get the bonus, you need to activate your account each quarter. To do so, just log into your account or visit this site.

Chase usually announces Q4's categories in early-to-mid-September; activation starts on September 15.

If you don't have the card, this is a good opportunity to sign up. In addition to points you earn from spending, you'll get a sign-up bonus of $150 (or 15,000 Ultimate Rewards points) when you spend $500 in the first three months.

This was my internal dialogue as I stood in REI and a salesperson directed me to a rack of wool socks, suggesting I purchase them for a summer trip in Southeast Asia, where summer is monsoon season with forecasts that are undeniably hot, sticky, and humid. The thought of bundling my toes in the same thick knit used to make cozy winter sweaters and mittens seemed kind of crazy. And that wasn't the only crazy thing about these socks — they cost about $20 a pair. That's more than I'd usually pay for a pack of six socks or more.

But, like any good salesperson does, they sold me on the socks. All it took was a little explaining about the power of  versatile, sweat-wicking, and temperature-regulating merino wool.

The specs of the Smartwool PhD Outdoor Light Micro Socks

Talking about specs when it comes to socks may sound a little funny. After all, these are just socks, not a high-tech gadget. But, the technical design of Smartwool socks is what make them unique, and if you ask me, worth the price.

Smartwool makes plenty of merino wool socks of different heights and thicknesses. I have the Smartwool PhD Outdoor Light Micro Socks, a lighter, shorter pair that's made for hiking and beyond.

Smartwool's PhD line is a collection of high-performance socks and clothing made from merino wool. There are a few things that set these socks apart from the value-pack options, but one that I find makes Smartwool special (as the name suggests) is the use of ZQ-certified Merino wool.

Whether you're hiking, running, or just traveling, merino wool is a great choice. The fabric helps regulate body temperature, so your feet won't freeze when it's cold or overheat when it's hot. It wicks away moisture at a vapor level, so even when your feet sweat you won't feel damp. Merino wool also resists odors, a particularly great feature if you're looking for socks that are great for traveling. Since they resist odor, they can go longer without being washed and won't stink up your bag as much as regular cotton socks. The ZQ-certification means that this wool is high-quality and adheres to high standards for animal welfare, environmental care, and sustainability.

smartwool

Beyond the fabric, Smartwool has seriously thought out every detail of these socks.

The socks have a narrower profile to accommodate women's feet. There's a light cushion on the sole that is ideal for running over terrain that may not be perfectly smooth, like hiking trails and cobblestone streets. There are mesh ventilation zones across the sock to maximize breathability and wick away the most moisture. The seams are virtually seamless, so you don't get that annoying seam feeling on your toes while you move. And with extra flexibility around the ankle, these stay put and won't bunch up no matter how much you move.

All of these features work together to make one of the most comfortable, in both feel and fit, pairs of socks you've ever worn.

The bottom line

I got a few pairs of these socks for hiking and traveling, but now I wear them just about every day. They're now my go-to pairs; since trying them, the rest of my old socks really do feel inferior. They're soft, durable, and keep my feet feeling comfortable whether I'm hiking on a dusty trail or running around a well-paved city.

While socks usually wear out pretty fast, the fact that these haven't changed at all since I got them makes me feel they're worth the price. Whether you want a pair of no-shows, running socks, or high socks, Smartwool has a huge range an options for you.

I really never thought I'd care much about socks, but as a Smartwool convert, I can't recommend its products enough.

This $160 memory foam topper is so cushioned and comfortable you could put it on the floor and still feel like you're on a plush mattress

Insider Picks writes about products and services to help you navigate when shopping online. Insider Inc. receives a commission from our affiliate partners when you buy through our links, but our reporting and recommendations are always independent and objective.

Sleepyhead mattress topper

  • The Sleepyhead Mattress Topper will make even your cheap dorm room mattress (or any mattress, for that matter) not just bearable, but actually comfortable.
  • It features a three-inch gel memory foam and an easy-to-clean hypoallergenic cover, plus it comes in sizes Twin XL up to a California king if you have a bigger bed. It's the mattress topper I wish I'd had in college — and that I'm glad I have now a few years out.
  • At $160, the topper is relatively expensive, but well worth it. Considering that your bed will be where your sleep, lounge, study, and more, spending a little extra on a quality mattress topper is a smart decision.

I remember my first day living on a college campus like it was yesterday. After a hectic day of unpacking, setting up my room, and getting acquainted with the dorm, I was ready to go and excited to be somewhat on my own. Considering I was only about an hour away from home and I was dorming with my twin brother, I had zero anticipation of being homesick, but later that night I started to miss home a lot and it was all because of one thing: the mattress.

As I lay in bed trying to go to sleep on the first night, I couldn't help but notice just how uncomfortable the mattress was — and all the duvet sets and pillows in the world weren't going to help. Compared to my mattress at home, sleeping on that twin-sized slab they called a mattress was pretty brutal.

The next morning, I did what any independent, level-headed, and responsible young adult would do: called my mom for assistance. She came to the rescue with mattress toppers for my brother and me, but unfortunately, they turned out to be not great. I'm not a big guy, but I'd still sink through the thin layer of foam feeling every bit of the hard mattress beneath it. The egg crate-style foam topper was probably just the cheapest thing she could find at Walmart or Bed Bath and Beyond (and to my mom's defense, it was completely understandable that she went the affordable route having two kids in college at the same time).

As a fairly recent graduate who dormed all four years of college, please take it from me that you do not want to sleep on a cheap mattress topper — or with no topper at all — during your time living on campus. I recently tried the Sleepyhead Mattress Topper, and it's exactly the one I wish I had when I was in college.

Sleepyhead mattress topper

The Sleepyhead Mattress Topper features a generous three inches of plush gel memory foam and a removable hypoallergenic fabric cover. The foam is designed to be cooling and the cover is breathable, so if you're a hot sleeper, you won't wake up drenched in sweat. The removable cover is also washable, so it's easy to keep clean, which is super important when living in a shared/communal space like a dorm or university apartment.

Unlike the mattress topper I had, the thick memory foam is supportive and comfortable. I didn't sink through to the mattress. Another small, but rather clever feature is the non-slip grip on the bottom of the topper cover. Dorm room mattresses are usually made out of cheap vinyl material, which can be slippery. If you're anything other than a mummy or vampire who stays completely still at night, most mattress toppers will slide from under your sheets. Although I don't have this issue with my mattress at home now, college students will definitely appreciate it.

At $160, the Sleepyhead Mattress Topper is considerably expensive, but I'd say it's worth the money. It's of much higher quality than anything I slept on during my college days and it comes with a five-year warranty. That means you're covered for a free replacement if for some reason it becomes defective during your entire college run — even if you need an extra semester or two to tie up some loose ends with credits.

Sleepyhead Mattress Topper

As a student or the parent of a college student, you're going to end up spending a lot of money on non-essential dorm items, but the most important thing to invest in is making the bed comfortable. After all, it's the main piece of furniture in all dorms, which means you'll spend a lot of time on or in it.

The Sleepyhead Mattress Topper is available in college-friendly sizes Twin XL and Full XL as well as normal sizes like Full, Queen, King, and California King if you want the same level of comfort at home.

Students might be in full summer mode right now, but the fall semester will be here before you know it. Put the Sleepyhead Mattress Topper at the top of your back-to-school shopping list so you don't end up spending your first night away from home tossing and turning.

How to free up space on a Mac computer that's running out of storage

Macbook Pro with touch bar

  • You can free up space on a Mac computer by simply deleting files or by using the computer's storage management tools to optimize the way you manage, organize, or remove your files.
  • Once your Mac runs out of storage, it will begin to write files on the hard drive itself using virtual memory, which will dramatically slow down the speed of your computer.
  • Freeing up space on your Mac's RAM is one of the best ways to ensure quick processing and to avoid system errors.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

A few weeks back, I decided I had finally suffered enough lost time staring at my Mac's colorful spinning wheel of death.

I brought my seven-year-old MacBook Pro to an Apple store for an assessment at the Genius Bar. The diagnosis was not good; apparently, I had a failing hard drive. Which meant at some point soon, I'd have a catastrophic crash, losing some 205 gigabytes worth of documents, pictures, programs, and everything else stored on my computer.

The immediate problem I faced was that the external hard drive I planned to back up the computer on prior to getting a new computer had a 200 GB capacity. So before I could even get rid of my failing MacBook, I needed to clear up free space on the Mac to ensure I had it backed up.

Long story short, everything worked out fine, and today I'm writing away on a brand-new MacBook Pro, no spinning death wheels in sight.

Once your Mac's storage is reaching its capacity, the computer will start to run more slowly. And once it's at capacity, your speed will be slashed as the computer has to use virtual memory, which is physically written onto the hard drive and thus much slower to create and access than standard storage space.

Don't let that happen to you! Freeing space on a Mac is easy to do, and your computer can easily optimize the process in a few ways so it does most of the clutter clearing for you.

How to free up space on a Mac by deleting files

If you know you have lots of large or redundant files or apps that you don't need, simply delete them and then clear them from the trash. This is the simplest way to free up space on a Mac, but it's not an ideal fix if all of your files (or programs) are important, and it can also be time consuming.

To reduce the storage space used by files without deleting them, you can also create zipped files, compressing many files together. This limits access until you unzip the compressed file, but it means you don't have to delete anything.

How to free up space on a Mac using storage management tools

Your Mac makes it easy to identify, manage, and remove files and programs that are taking up too much space. There are four different approaches you can take, and if you use them all, you should free up more than enough space. They all start using the same steps. (This is assuming you are using a computer with the Sierra OS, updated after 2016, for the record.)

1. Click on the Apple logo at the top left corner of the screen.

2. Click "About This Mac" on the dropdown menu.

free up space on mac

3. Click the "Storage" tab on the popup window.

free up space on mac

Now wait a moment as your Mac calculates how much space is used up and what is still free. It will color code the different file and program types taking up space and display free space in white on the right side of the display bar.

Now that you know how much (or perhaps rather how little) space you have, if you need to make more, click the button that says "Manage…" (pictured above).

On the next window, you will see the following four primary space-clearing options:

free up space on mac

Store in iCloud

iCloud offers 5 GB of storage space for free, or you can pay a few dollars a month for more storage space than you'll likely ever need. (You can buy up to 2 terabytes of cloud storage.) Use iCloud to store photos, PDFs, messages, and all sorts of other files, maintaining easy access to the files but removing them from your physical computer.

Optimize Storage

This function deletes movies and shows you have already watched. You can always re-download them without paying again, your account remembers what you bought.

Empty Trash Automatically

Deleted files aren't really gone and are really taking up space until cleared from the trash. Unless you manually empty the trash folder from time to time, turn on this function to clear it monthly.

Reduce Clutter

This option makes it easy to see what are the largest files on your computer, saving you time hunting around for the biggest space-taking culprits. You can also browse by file type, and then deal with the various files as you choose.

the best kitchen gadgets to help you eat healthier

  • Eating healthy can be a challenge, but it doesn't have to be if you have the right kitchen tools to help you prep good meals.
  • From a spiralizer and pair of herb scissors to pineapple corer and avocado knife, we've rounded up a few essentials that everyone should have in their kitchen.

In a world of takeout, fast food, and nuke-em-in-the-microwave meals, you might be spending less and less time in your kitchen. And that's a shame, because not only does home cooking done right taste a lot better than prepackaged food or meals bought on the run, it's frequently healthier and more economical, as well.

If you need some encouragement to get back in the kitchen, we're here to help. We've rounded up nine kitchen gadgets that admittedly you could live without, but you probably won't want to. Each one helps to make your food prep or cooking time a little easier, a little faster, a little healthier, or a little bit more fun. Best of all, none of them are expensive or complicated.

These gadgets are handy tools to bring back the joy of cooking and keep you healthy. Many of them inspire you to eat more fresh veggies, herbs, and fruit, while others help you prep meals with fewer oils and carbs.

A spiralizer

The Spiralizer 5-Blade Vegetable Slicer turns humble veggies and fruits into noodles, curly toppings for salads, and healthy garnishes for any dish.

Zoodles and other veggie noodles are one of the hottest new trends in the kitchen, and it's no wonder. They taste good, provide the base for whatever tasty sauce you'd like to pour on top, and pack a powerful punch of nutrients without wheat or other grains you might want to avoid. You can buy pre-spiralized zoodles in many markets these days, but they are expensive. Save your dollars, and do your own spiralizing instead.

Just choose one of the five cutlery-grade stainless-steel blade plates included with the Spiralizer 5-Blade Vegetable Slicerclamp your veggie or fruit into position, and turn the crank. Voila, you've got thin curls of veggie deliciousness that are perfect for stir-frying, soups, salads, pasta dishes, bowl lunches, or just about anything else you can cook.

The spiralizer comes with five different blades, and each one produces a slightly different thickness, twist, or shred. The spiralizer holds tight to your countertop with suction-cup feet, cleans up in the dishwasher, and works beautifully to spiralize just about any fruit or veggie that's firm, including zucchini, sweet potatoes, yellow squash, carrots, ginger, broccoli stalks, apples, pears, and cabbage.

Pros: A great way to add interest to vegetables and cut back on wheat and other carb consumption, includes three free recipe eBooks

Cons: You might eventually tire of the zoodle trend

Buy the Spiralizer 5-Blade Vegetable Slicer at Amazon for $24.98

A salad cutting bowl

The EZ Salad Cutting Bowl takes all the fussy chopping and slicing out of salad prep so you can eat salad more often.

If too many of your lunches come from vending machines or drive-thru burger joints, you can healthy-up your diet by choosing salad at least a couple times per week. The EZ Salad Cutting Bowl makes it easy to mix up a great salad quickly.

Just add your favorite mix of veggies to the EZ Salad Cutting Bowl– lettuce, carrots, cucumbers, cabbage, celery, tomatoes, or any others you like – rinse them right in the bowl, close the bowl's base, turn, slice through the bowl's slits, turn again, slice once more, and then open up the cutting bowl and enjoy your chopped salad. You can make fruit salad, as well.

The EZ Salad Cutting Bowl is made of sturdy, BPA-free plastic, and easily washes in the dishwasher.

Pros: An easy way to make tasty salads or chop veggies for use in other dishes

Cons: You'll need a knife long enough to reach across the entire bowl

Buy the EZ Salad Cutting Bowl on Amazon for $15.99

Some silicon baking sheets

With the Velesco Silicone Baking Mats, stuck-on baked goods, meats, or vegetables are a thing of the past, and you'll cut down on oils and fats, as well.

I use my aluminum baking sheets quite a bit, and not only for baking. Sheet-pan meals, heating up frozen foods, cooking bacon in the oven, and toasting seeds are all fairly common activities in my household. Scrubbing the sheets, however, was never much fun. It took me a while to discover the joys of silicone baking mats, but once I did, there was no turning back.

I've had my set of two Velesco Silicone Baking Mats for a year or so now, and despite frequent use, they are still unstained and have no signs of wear or tear. They fit nicely in my 16x12-inch baking sheets, and wash-up quickly with just a swirl in the sink and a little dishwashing soap.

I also use them to line my roasting pans; they fit nearly perfectly. No more cooking-oil sprays — which leave impossible-to-remove buildup on your cookware — no more soaking and scrubbing to remove cooked-on food, no more greasing the pan before I use it. Food also cooks evenly and removes easily from the food-grade silicone material.

The half-sheet baking mats are also perfect for rolling out cookie dough or kneading bread, rolling meatballs, or making candy. Go ahead and put the mats in your dishwasher, microwave, oven, or freezer and they will come out unscathed. They are also affordable when compared to the trendy Silpat brand.

Pros: No need for grease, butter, or oil on your baking sheets or roasting pans, and foods won't stick, even if burned

Cons: None to speak of

Buy the Velasco Silicone Baking Mats on Amazon for $12.95 for a set of two

Some herb scissors

With the Jenaluca Herb Scissors snipping fresh herbs is a breeze.

Want to add a powerful dose of flavor to your meals? Then instead of relying solely on salt, or automatically reaching for dried herbs and spices, get fresh herbs. It's hard to underestimate how much fresh herbs improve the taste of nearly any dish, including soups, roasts, salads, eggs, and stir-fries. While you can chop, chop, chop with a kitchen knife, it's so much faster and easier to use a pair of Jenaluca Herb Scissors instead.

Made of stainless steel with ergonomic handles, the herb scissors have five stacked blades on each side, so it's easy to snip your herbs or scallions as small as you'd like — even down to confetti-sized bits to use as garnish. The herbs won't be crushed, ripped, or bruised, either — just fresh and flavorful. You can even use the scissors to cut up deli meat, mushrooms, or dried fruit.

The Jenaluca Herb Scissors come with a cover that includes a small brush for wiping the blades clean, but they are also dishwasher safe.

Pros: Much faster and easier than chopping herbs with a knife

Cons: None to speak of

Buy the Jenaluca Herb Scissors on Amazon for $14.87 (originally $21.97)

A pot strainer

You won't need a colander to keep your pasta, beans, or veggies from sliding down the drain when you clip the Kitchen Gizmo Snap 'n Strain onto your pot first.

I'm sure I'm not the only person who's ever lost the entire potful of pasta while attempting to drain the cooking water into the sink. Too bad I didn't have a Kitchen Gizmo Snap 'n Strain — my dinner wouldn't have dropped down the drain.

This ingenious kitchen gadget has two clips that fasten to the sides of your pot or pan, and it's made of silicone to mold to the curve of the cookware. Just fasten the Snap 'n Strain in place before draining the cooking water and your food is safely contained in the pot — no need for a colander or separate strainer.

It's sturdy enough to hold back even heavy foods like potatoes, and can also be used to strain grease or fat from cooked meat.

The clip-on strainer fits just about any round pot or pan and is dishwasher safe. It takes up less storage room than a regular colander, as well.

Pros: Simplifies pasta making, reduces the chance of being burned by hot water, easy to store

Cons: Very small foods, such as couscous, might slip through the holes

Buy the Kitchen Gizmo Snap 'n Strain on Amazon for $15.99

A pineapple corer

Fresh pineapple is delicious and super-good for you. The Super Z Pineapple Corer makes it easy to core and slice it.

Pineapple is loaded with Vitamin C, manganese (vital for collagen production and healthy skin), and bromelain, an enzyme that helps you digest proteins, thus reducing belly bloat and sluggishness. But serving pineapple can be a pain. Sure, you can open a can, but that doesn't come close to the glory of the fresh fruit. Slicing a whole pineapple, however, is not much fun. The leaves are sharp, the skin is tough, and the center core can be tricky.

Here comes the Super Z Pineapple Corer to the rescue. Just cut off the top of the fruit, center the stainless steel corer over the center of the pineapple, and then push while twisting. Boom, you have neatly sliced pineapple rings, just like the ones in the can, but fresh, juicy, and full of flavor. Eat it on its own, serve it in a fruit salad, or skewer chunks to grill with chicken or fish. So good.

Pros: Stainless steel construction is sturdy, turns out perfectly cored pineapple rings, encourages you to eat more of this healthy fruit

Cons: This is admittedly a one-trick pony of a gadget, but may be worth it if you eat enough pineapple

Buy the Super Z Pineapple Corer on Amazon for $5.99

A zester

The Raniaco Stainless Steel Zester makes quick work of zesting and grating fruit, vegetables, cheese, chocolate, and many other flavorful ingredients.

Why break out the bulky box grater when it's so easy to use the Raniaco Stainless Steel Zester instead? This simple device has a comfortable-to-hold silicone handle and an 8-inch, stainless steel, sharply etched blade that easily grates and zests citrus, garlic, coconut, carrots, cheese, and just about anything else you want to reduce to finely ground fragments.

When finished, just rinse the blade clean under running water or pop it in the dishwasher. But watch out, because this gadget is sharp. It includes a safety case for storage.

Pros: Makes grating and zesting so easy, takes up little storage space

Cons: Only for finely grating ingredients, not for large or rough-chopped ingredients

Buy the Raniaco Stainless Steel Zester on Amazon for $7.97

An avocado tool

The OXO Good Grips 3-in-1 Avocado Slicer makes prepping guacamole or avocado toast a cinch.

Admittedly, there is nothing this kitchen gadget does that you couldn't accomplish with a knife. But a knife isn't nearly as much fun as the OXO Good Grips 3-in-1 Avocado Slicer, and it's not as safe, either. Besides, anything that encourages you to eat more heart-healthy, delicious avocado is a must have.

I purchased this nifty gadget for my avocado-loving husband a couple years ago, figuring it would be a fun stocking stuffer. And it was, but to my surprise, we use this convenient device all the time. It's great for slicing avocados for salads, sandwiches, scrambled eggs, and of course, guacamole. I even use it to scoop out avocado for my morning smoothies.

The OXO Good Grips 3-in-1 Avocado Slicer has a blade for slicing the avocado, a pitter for grabbing and removing the pit, and plastic blades to evenly slice and remove the avocado fruit from the skin. Once done, it easily rinses clean. The sturdy plastic is strong, and the gadget holds up to frequent use.

Pros: Fun to use and works well for preparing avocados

Cons: Another one-trick pony but worth it if it encourages you to eat more avocado

Buy the OXO Good Grips 3-in-1 Avocado Slicer on Amazon for $9.99

A meat shredder

Bear Paws Shredder Claws lift, cut, and shred meat for sandwiches, soups, stews, and more.

If you're vegetarian or vegan, you'll want to pass this one by. But if you love meat, the Bear Paws Shredder Claws are a must-have in your kitchen, or next to your backyard grill. These super-heavy-duty nylon "claws" make it easy to grab and lift a roast or other large cut of cooked meat, and when it comes to shredding, forget about forks or knives. Just dig these claws into the meat and shred away to your heart's content.

Of course, the Shredder Claws aren't only limited to shredding. You can also use one to stabilize watermelon, other large fruit, or a turkey or roast while you carve it. Once done, the claws are dishwasher safe. They're heat-resistant up to 475 degrees, too, so have no fear using them over the grill, but remember to protect your hands with oven mitts to prevent a burn.

Pros: Easier, faster, and safer than using a knife and fork to shred meat, useful for lifting large roasts or turkeys

Cons: If you don't eat meat, you won't need these

Buy the Bear Paws Shredder Claws on Amazon for $12.99

My 1-year-old daughter is obsessed with these books — they keep her entertained longer than any toy

Usborne book 2

  • Usborne books were the first books that held my daughter's attention for more than a few minutes, longer than any of her toys.
  • There are books for every age level from babies to teens, and so many of the books for babies have interactive elements like finger trails, sounds, flaps, manipulatives, and textures.
  • You can buy them from an independent consultant, or online where prices start at less than $5

I'm an English teacher and writer, so it should come as no surprise that I love books — and have a ton of them. I've always wanted my daughter Ellie to have a huge home library too. Well, she's only a year old, but she already has way more books than I do.

I love reading to Ellie, but when I first started hearing about Usborne Books from friends, I was pretty skeptical. Books are books — what was it about these that made them more special than what we already had at home? I decided to buy a few books when one of my friends hosted an online Usborne book party to find out.

When Ellie got her first Usborne book "Garden Sounds", she was instantly obsessed.

She was about nine months old at the time, and while she loved books in general, her attention span was maybe one page. With "Garden Sounds", she would sit there mesmerized while I read the entire book to her. She would even play with the book on her own and it was one of the first books she "read" to herself. The book includes realistic sounds, finger trails, and cut outs. Ellie is 1-year-old now and it's still one of her favorites among our growing collection of Usborne books.

What makes Usborne so unique

It's important for kids to read every single day, but it's not always easy to get them to sit down and do it. A study by the American Academy of Pediatrics found that among the many benefits, reading helps promote brain development in young children.

With more than 2,000 titles (including more than 75 in Spanish), Usborne does an amazing job catering to every interest and age group. From newborns to teens and even adults, this company uses so many techniques to make the books interactive, fun, and interesting.

For newborns, there is a series of high contrast fold-out books for tummy time. I didn't know about Usborne when Ellie was still doing tummy time, but I wish I did because I would've definitely gotten these books to keep her entertained and happy. Older babies would love what the brand calls "Touchy-Feely" and "Slide and See" books that don't have much text, but have textures and peek-a-boo slides instead to explore and play. Ellie's favorite slide and see book is "Baby's Very First Slide and See Farm."

There are a lot of interactive books for toddlers too, like "All Better," which has reusable bandages for kids to put on animals' boo-boos throughout the book, and "Busy Car Book" which has a small car that can be moved around the pages as you read to keep kids entertained. This is part of what the "busy books" series. Even though she's only a year old, Ellie already loves to play with the bandages and grabs the toy off the track as I read to her.

As kids get older, Usborne also offers fiction and nonfiction books with beautiful illustrations and cut-outs with longer text to help readers as they start the transition into chapter books. It also has a series of nonfiction books called "Shine A Light," in which readers use a flashlight to reveal hidden pictures. Reading in the dark with a flashlight is such a novelty for kids, which might encourage them to read.

In addition to the wide variety of types of books, Usborne also has books in a wide variety of physical sizes too. Ellie's "Baby's Very First Stroller Book Jungle" is only a few square inches and clips to her stroller or car seat. On the other end of the spectrum, she also has "Life Size," which has pictures of animals that are illustrated to scale so she can compare the size of her mouth to a lion's mouth, for example.

As a teacher, it's so sad to me when I see that the majority of high school students don't like to read. When I ask my students why, their answer is often that they're forced to read books they aren't interested in when they get to the middle school level.

Usborne does everything it can to help young readers continue to love to read as they grow, and it gives parents the tools they need to engage their kids in reading. Every book is designed to entertain, educate, and inspire your child. According to Usborne, "More than 30 years ago, Peter Usborne pioneered a new generation of books that prove that it is possible to create books that compete with the vast media that attracts children today."

Drawbacks of Usborne

Usborne books are sold at retailers such as Amazon or Barnes & Noble, but the company also sells books through independent consultants. Buying from an independent consultant can be a really great experience because they can recommend books based on your child's age and interests, and they'll help you through the buying process.

One con to consider with this way though is that shipping can be slow, and at a flat rate of $6, it's a little steep if you're only buying one book.

The bottom line

Whether your child already loves to read or you're fighting an uphill battle, you can't lose when trying out Usborne books. Independent consultants can help you choose the perfect book if you're stuck figuring out where to start, or you can take your pick from the wide variety and feel confident that the books you choose will come in handy sometime in your child's life.

Thankfully, we live in a world where there are thousands of books to choose from, and as J.K. Rowling once said, "If you don't like to read, you haven't found the right book."

If you want to try some other options, books from Indestructibles are great for young babies who prefer to chew and rip books, and Dr. Seuss books are classics that younger kids often like too. If your child is older and looking for chapter books, I'd recommend heading to your local library so they can browse and find something they love.

I truly didn't understand the hype until I tried Usborne Books, and now I have a lot of my friends and family who are hooked on them as well. Even if your children don't end up loving (or eating) them as much as Ellie did, adding another book to your child's library is never going to hurt.

Pros: Fun and interactive, encourages reading at all ages, independent consultants can help you pick out books, reasonable prices

Cons: Shipping can be slow and expensive if buying from consultant
