Super smash Bros Ultimate Dragon Quest Heroes

  • "The Hero" from Dragon Quest is the next downloadable character coming to"Super Smash Bros. Ultimate" this summer.
  • "Dragon Quest" is a legendary series of roleplaying games, rivaling "Final Fantasy" in both age and international popularity. "The Hero" represents the protagonists from multiple Dragon Quest games.
  • With designs by "Dragon Ball" creator Akira Toriyama, the "Dragon Quest" heroes have distinct looks but share the same moveset. They different heroes will be included as selectable costumes, similar to Bowser Jr and the Koopa Kids.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

"Super Smash Bros. Ultimate" will welcome multiple protagonists from the "Dragon Quest" series as a single downloadable character called "The Hero."

While the early "Dragon Quest" games struggled to find an audience in America due to issues with imports and translations, the series is wildly celebrated for helping kick start an entire genre of turn-based roleplaying games in Japan. The "Dragon Quest" characters are designed by "Dragon Ball" creator Akira Toriyama, whose distinct art style has also influenced generations of animators and video game developers.

Much like Bowser Jr and the Koopa Kids, players will be able to choose between the protagonists of "Dragon Quest XI," "Dragon Quest VIII," "Dragon Quest III," and "Dragon Quest IV." They'll all share the same moveset, which includes a mix of sword and shield attacks and a few magic spells.Super Smash Bros Ultimate Hero Dragon Quest

Nintendo revealed The Hero as the next "Super Smash Bros. Ultimate" character during the presentation at E3, the biggest gaming event of the year. He's the second of three characters included in the "Super Smash Bros. Ultimate" fighter pass, and is expected to arrive in Summer 2019. The third character is Banjo-Kazooie, who is scheduled to join the roster this fall.

Each downloadable character in "Super Smash Bros. Ultimate" also comes with a distinct stage based on their original game, and each downloadable character can be purchased individually for $5.99. Check out the full reveal trailer for the "Dragon Quest" hero below.

How to unlock a Samsung Galaxy S10 from its current carrier so you can switch it to a new one

0

Galaxy S10 5G

  • By law, cell phone carriers are now required to allow you to unlock your phone and use it with a different carrier, but it generally must be fully paid off to unlock.
  • To unlock your Samsung Galaxy S10, you will need to find the IMEI number for your Galaxy S10 through its Settings app or by dialing *#06# on your phone.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

One of the most frustrating aspects of owning a cell phone is that it's locked into a particular carrier — if you buy an AT&T Samsung Galaxy S10, it only works with AT&T, for example.

At least, that used to be the case. Thanks to a law passed back in 2015, it's possible to unlock your phone and use it with any carrier, generally with one big caveat — the phone needs to be completely paid for in order for your carrier to unlock it.

Make sure your Samsung Galaxy S10 actually needs to be unlocked

Before you attempt to unlock your S10, you should ensure it's actually locked to a carrier — this can save you some time and money.

Most Galaxy S10 handsets come locked to a specific carrier. There are a couple of exceptions:

  • It's a Galaxy S10 from Verizon. Verizon no longer locks its phones, so if you have a Verizon model, you can remove the Verizon SIM card and replace it with one from another carrier. It should work without a problem.
  • The handset was purchased unlocked. Most carriers only sell unlocked phones for the full purchase price. If you have any recurring payments on your Galaxy S10, it is almost certainly locked.

You can test your phone to see if it's locked by removing the SIM card and replacing it with one from another carrier. (Carefully insert the SIM card tray key in the slot until the tray pops out, then switch SIM cards and replace the tray). If the phone works properly and does not request an unlock code, it's already unlocked.

How to get an unlock code for a Samsung Galaxy S10

In order to unlock your phone, you will need an unlock code, which you will need to enter into your Galaxy S10 after inserting the SIM card from your new carrier.

You should contact your carrier to request an unlock code. You will only be able to get a code if the handset is completely paid off. If you have recurring payments, the carrier won't unlock the handset for you.

To get an unlock code from your carrier, you may need to find your phone's IMEI number, which we will discuss in the following steps.

How to unlock your Samsung Galaxy S10

1. Open the Settings app.

2. Scroll to the very bottom and tap "About phone."

3. On the About phone page, find the IMEI number, which appears with the phone's model number and serial number. Copy the number carefully, or tap and hold your finger on the number for several seconds to copy it to clipboard.

4. You can also find your IMEI code by dialing and calling *#06#. When you do this, your phone won't actually make a call, but will instead display a screen with your code.

unlock 3

5. Get an unlock code from the carrier. You may need to provide your IMEI number.

6. Turn off your Galaxy S10 by holding the Power button until you see the shutdown options, then tap "Power off."

7. Remove the SIM card from your phone by inserting the SIM card tray key in the slot firmly but carefully until the tray pops out. You'll find the key in the Galaxy S10's original box.

8. Replace the SIM card with one from the new carrier and slide it back into the phone.

9. Turn on the phone.

10. After it powers up and recognizes the new SIM card, you should see a message to "Enter your network unlock code." Enter the unlock code and tap "Unlock." You're now unlocked from your carrier.

I drove a $50,000 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivan to find out if it's still better than Honda's and Toyota's offerings — here's the verdict (FCAU)

Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

  • The Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is the only plug-in hybrid minivan currently on the market.
  • I tested a $50,000 Limited version, crammed with tech and outfitted with an "S" appearance package.
  • The Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is our reigning minivan champ, beating out the popular Honda Odyssey and the Toyota Sienna.
  • After my latest test, I can say that the Pacifica is still the king.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Believe it or not, all minivans are not created equal.

The Honda Odyssey is an engineering masterpiece, while the Toyota Sienna could get you through a zombie apocalypse. Both can haul lots of kids, pets, and gear.

But the Chrysler Pacifica is special. It's the spiritual descendant of the original minivan, rolled out decades ago. And it continues to lead with a combination of comfort, versatility, technology, and style — even though the Odyssey and Sienna provide stiff competition.

Of course, if you want a plug-in hybrid minivan, the Pacifica is your only choice. I recently re-tested a $50,000, well-equipped 2019 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid. Read on to find out if the champ continued to impress.

Behold! The Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivan, in Limited trim with a "Velvet Red Pearl-Coat" paint job. This test car was $45,395 before being optioned up to $50,375.

The last time I tested the Pacifica, I concluded that "the key selling feature for the Pacifica is that it's simply a damn pleasant place to spend time." I didn't just favor it over the Honda Odyssey and the Toyota Sienna due to its hybrid-ness.

Read the review.

This is essentially the same minivan I tested a few years back. The Pacifica nameplate replaced the Town & Country, and the hybrid version arrived in 2017.

I think the Pacifica is the best-looking minivan on the road, with a nice, shapely design. Our tester got the aggressive "S" package treatment, hence the blacked-grille, trim, and wheels.

Obviously, you can't do that much with the rear end of what's basically a small bus with a huge liftgate.

See what I mean. The contrast between the front view of the Pacifica and the rear is nothing new, however.

Deploy doors! The Pacifica's dual automated sliders can be operated from the front seat, back seats, or by using the key fob.

Minivans absolutely kill it on cargo capacity, and the Pacifica is no exception. You have 32 cubic feet with all the seats up ...

... And about 90 cubic feet with the third row dropped. With all seats except the fronts out of the picture, you're working with a cavernous 140 cubic feet.

Our tester came with a black interior, dressed up with piping. The second row had captain's-style seats.

And they were kid approved!

Overall, seating comfort was exceptional.

The front seats are heated and cooled and would be a joy on a long journey.

The dual-pane moonroof floods the cabin with natural light.

The bucket seats with "S" logos are crafted from Nappa leather.

The leather-wrapped and heated steering wheel is downright lovely, and the instrumentation is tech-y without being off-putting.

Again, what we have here is a minivan, and that's mean maxi-storage and lots of cupholders.

The sliding side doors can be controlled or locked using these buttons.

Push-button ignition is the industry standard and ...

The Pacifica's fob has remote start as well as sliding-door control and liftgate activation.

The Pacifica makes use of Chrysler's quite good Uconnect infotainment system. It covers all bases, from Bluetooth pairing to GPS navigation to USB/AUX connectivity.

The system runs off a seven-inch touchscreen that's responsive and easy to use.

Throughout the vehicle, there are places to plug in devices.

Our Pacifica also tester included a pair of rear-seat entertain screens ...

... as well as wireless headphones and a remote. Passengers can access their own entertainment while the driver can continue to listen to music.

The Harman/Kardon audio system is a wonderful 20-speaker setup with a 760-watt amplifier.

Let's check out that hybrid powertrain!

The Pacifica's eHybrid system has a 3.6-liter V6 yoked to a hybrid electric system whose two electric motors provide 260 total horsepower. It's hooked up to a continuously variable transmission or CVT.

Here's the hatch for the plug-in charger.

It's very straightforward.

A charging cable is supplied. It will take over 12 hours to replenish the 16 kWh battery from a wall outlet with 120-volts. Level 2 charging at 240 volts will get the job done in around two hours.

The hybrid powertrain can run on electricity only for about 33 miles. On gas alone, the Pacifica's combined city/highway number is 30 mpg, while "MPGe" is 82. Those are good numbers for a minivan.

And remember, there's no range anxiety if you have a gas motor!

So what's the verdict?

The Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is still my favorite minivan. I'd like it even if it weren't in hybrid trim - but the bump up in MPGs with the plug-in tech is certainly a selling point. The $50,000 price tag is also justified by the Pacifica's near-luxury interior and graceful exterior styling.

When I last reviewed the vehicle, I wrote:

I'm not going to say that the Pacifica is exhilarating to drive; it isn't. The 0-60 mph run consumes about 8 seconds, which is actually respectable considering the Pacifica weighs almost 5,000 pounds. Take that bulk into a corner with any spiritedness and you can feel the suspension protesting.

Guess what? That hasn't changed! To be honest, the Odyssey still drives better. But the Pacifica is simply nicer. Will it outlive the tank-like Sienna? Probably not.

But if you'd like your minivan to have just a bit extra, to be the highest expression of the genre, the Pacifica should be your choice. The hybrid adds frosting on the cake, in the form of better fuel economy and lower emissions. And the "S" package adds a menacing flavor to the Chrysler.

The Pacifica is our reigning minivan-comparison champion, and now that I've once again checked in with this dandy vehicle, I can safely say that the king remains at the top of the hill.

Jeff Bezos, Drew Houston, and a group of other tech execs traveled to a remote Italian village to meet with the fashion designer Silicon Valley is obsessed with (and whose sweaters can cost $3,000)

Jeff Bezos

What do Jeff Bezos, Reid Hoffman, Drew Houston, and Dick Costolo have in common (besides tech, of course)?

They're all fans of high-end Italian fashion designer Brunello Cucinelli — such fans, in fact, that they recently all took a group field trip to visit Cucinelli at his home in Italy, according to GQ's Samuel Hine

Photos from the trip — which Nextdoor cofounder Nirav Tolia told GQ was called the "Solomeo Summit," named after the tiny town where Cucinelli is based — were posted on Cucinelli's Instagram account

There's a group shot, and another photo of the Silicon Valley crew sitting in a big circle. Bezos is notably absent from both photos, but GQ reports that he was in attendance.

Over the last few days we have welcomed here in Solomeo my friends from the Silicon Valley, a place that is far away in distance but so close to my soul. How could I ever thank these guys, whom I consider the young Leonardos of the third millennium, for coming to visit me to our Solomeo, the Hamlet of the Soul, seat and source of all my dreams, a place where we strive to pursue the highest ideal of an economy imbued with humanity? I see it as a great honour. Together, in these days of friendship and reflection, we have confirmed once again our respect, safeguard and promotion of what has always been seen as the deepest treasure of people, the highest evidence of the original nobility of man, the utmost expression of freedom and moral supremacy: the soul. Although we deal with economic affairs on a daily basis, we have approached the ideals we uphold with the elegance of a noble discussion. Our ideas for the future entail the joy of a technology subject to humanity. The soul feeding the economy has been a dream and a gift of life, before becoming an idea. If the soul was ever imbued with ideals, well, over the past few days we have all felt it inside our heart. If humanism was ever reborn in the heart of our fellow human beings, over the past few days we have witnessed this joyful event. Our thoughts go out to the future of our children and those coming after us, endless happy years, and expression of a fascinating energy. That's why we believe that it’s just fair not to bridle our dreams but rather to plan for centuries, for millennia to come. These days in Solomeo have turned out to be some sort of “Symposium on Soul and Economics”. I want to thank from the bottom of my heart my loving guests who came to honour me with their presence Jeff Bezos, Marc Benioff (attending via a magnificent open letter addressed to the entire group), Ramin Arani, Ruzwana Bashir, Paolo Bergamo, Dick Costolo, Lee Fixel, Reid Hoffman, Drew Houston, Lynn Jurich, Sarah Leary, Alec Ross, Ned Segal, Rob Speyer, Nirav Tolia (who deserves my greatest gratitude for organizing with patience and passion this magnificent meeting), Trevor Traina. #brunellocucinelli #solomeosoulsymposium

A post shared by Brunello Cucinelli (@brunellocucinelli) on May 29, 2019 at 3:14am PDT on

So how did such a trip come about? According to GQ, Cucinelli invited the crew to his hometown to talk about how to make the world a better place, to eat, and to take walks in nature. And while some of the executives in attendance are actually fans of the clothing brand, all of them are fans of Cucinelli himself: He's an entrepreneur, and a billionaire, and comes from humble roots like many Silicon Valley stars.

While we'll never know what was talked about at the summit — or, as Cucinelli called it on Instagram, the "Solomeo Soul Symposium" — the designer seems unafraid to challenge powerful executives like Bezos.

GQ spoke with Cucinelli after the summit, and he told a story about a dinner he had with Bezos in Seattle prior to the summit. This is apparently what Cucinelli said to Bezos over dinner:

"I said 'Jeff, you're the richest man in the world, and in 500 years when my soul passes by Seattle and comes to see what happened here, what am I going to find? What have you left for the future as this important presence? What did you leave behind?'"

Bezos reportedly replied that he's planning to go to space, which Cucinelli dismissed by saying that "people will live on planet Earth for many centuries to come" and that he'd like to come back in 500 years and see something built by Bezos, much like the Parthenon in Greece.

A Silicon Valley favorite

Kevin Systrom

While most people outside of Bezos' tax bracket likely haven't heard of Brunello Cucinelli or his eponymous brand, it's revered in both fashion circles and tech circles.

Mark Zuckerberg is a well-known fan of the brand. While he has since moved on from his go-to gray t-shirts, he used to have the brand custom-make his $300 or $400 tees.

Kevin Systrom, the founder and former CEO of Instagram, has also publicly proclaimed his love of the brand, although he prefers its sweaters.

"I love Brunello Cucinelli sweaters," Systrom told the Wall Street Journal back in 2015. "You can spend a lot on them, and that's not a bad thing."

Systrom (who "liked" one of the group photos from the trip on Cucinelli's Instagram) wasn't exaggerating: According to Cucinelli's website, one of his sweaters can cost as much as $3,345. Men's suits seem to range in price from $3,000 to $6,000, and the opulently elegant "Shearling caban jacket" will cost you a cool $8,495.

Cucinelli

Silicon Valley stylist Victoria Hitchcock told Vox's The Goods last year that she's been working to get men in Silicon Valley to ditch beat-up Converse sneakers and t-shirts — or, as Trump would say, undershirts— in favor of high-end menswear from brands like Brunello Cucinelli and James Perse. (The latter does make t-shirts, but they cost $100 and are favored by Snap CEO Evan Spiegel.)

So while Silicon Valley overall remains hopelessly un-stylish, a select few very wealthy executives seem to be moving away from geek-chic and toward, well, chic.

Facebook just made its first public entrance into the US health space with a tool that pings you to donate blood during a shortage

Facebook's health team just made its first public entrance into North America, launching a tool that pings people to donate blood in times of need.

Starting on Wednesday, organizations in New York, Chicago, Washington, DC, Baltimore, and San Francisco will be able to put out requests for blood on Facebook, which will go to users who identify themselves as donors. The system will be open to hospitals, blood banks, and the American Red Cross.

Blood is used to rescue victims of car crashes and other emergencies as well as assist people in treating cancer, sickle cell disease, and other chronic illnesses. But shortages abound, because blood products can only be kept for a short amount of time, and people often don't donate consistently.

"One of the real challenges is: how do we maintain a viable and thriving blood supply?" John Hackett, the vice president of applied research and technology for the diagnostics division of healthcare company Abbott, previously told Business Insider. "We badly need to recruit donors who will give regularly."

Read more: Facebook is about to launch a tool in the US that pings you to donate blood when there are shortages

The problem is particularly severe overseas, where Facebook had already offered the tool. In India, every week, thousands of users would flock to Facebook to ask their friends and family to give blood, Hema Budaraju, Facebook's product director of health, told Business Insider in a February interview.

Inspired by those pleas, Budaraju and her team rolled out an official Facebook blood donations tool in the country in 2017. The company later expanded the tool to Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Brazil, where more than 35 million Facebook users signed up, Budaraju said.

The tool was built by Facebook's Social Good team, which also created the company's disaster response tool — the feature that lets you mark yourself "safe" during a crisis.

Local experts in India previously raised serious concerns about the tool to Business Insider, including an allegation that black market blood peddlers were taking advantage of the tool to demand money or other rewards.

Read more: Health officials in India warn that Facebook's blood donation tool risks fueling a black market for blood

In the US, the system won't allow individuals to put out requests for blood, unlike in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. That'll help avoid some of the problems Facebook has encountered in those countries, such as individuals attempting to buy blood.

facebook blood app

"Keeping people safe on our platform is a priority and staying ahead of those who try to misuse our service is led by our security and integrity teams," Budaraju said in the February interview.

Eventually, the company hopes to move toward only allowing organizations to request blood in every country where the tool is operational, she said. But for now, because the infrastructure doesn't yet exist to do so, they will continue to allow individual users to put out requests in Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan.

Budaraju said the tool has already helped to facilitate tens of thousands of donations, saving lives by making it easier for people in need of safe blood to find willing donors with matching blood types. She said the company worked with blood banks in South Asia and Brazil to survey donors, and found that 20% of them said Facebook influenced them to give blood. The team has yet to publish those findings.

"The intent is to have a set of tools to increase awareness and to make it easy to donate blood," Budaraju said.

The 6 highest-paid fighters in 2019

0
0

Saul Canelo Alvarez beat Daniel Jacobs, who won

The Forbes list for highest-earning athletes is back for another year, and there are six fighters who grace the 100-strong ranking for the last 12 months.

Floyd Mayweather, who has long been seen as the money man of the sport, is no longer there as the unbeaten American retired from the game despite a bizarre unofficial exhibition in Japan this year, which earned him $9 million.

Though Mayweather has gone, the sport has moved on and the new money men in combat sports include two hard-hitting heavyweights, two technically-adept middleweights, a UFC fighter, and a veteran of the game who continues to seek out the toughest of challenges.

Without further ado, here are the six best-paid fighters from the last 12 months, ranked in ascending order.

6: Middleweight boxing contender Gennady Golovkin made $25.5 million.

A 41-fight veteran, Gennady Golovkin, 37, has 35 knockouts from 39 wins against one loss and one draw.

The only blemishes on his record are to Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, and it is likely a third fight will be booked in an attempt to conclude their gripping middleweight rivalry.

Read more: Gennady Golovkin landed his left hook knockout punch so cleanly, it left Steve Rolls falling face first to the canvas

Golovkin has endorsement deals with Nike's Jordan brand, Hublot, and Tecate, according to Forbes.

He also signed a six-fight deal with DAZN, a streaming service seen as the Netflix of sports, which is worth $100 million, Forbes says.

5: Welterweight boxing champion Manny Pacquiao made $26 million.

Even at 40 years old, Manny Pacquiao remains competitive at the elite level in world boxing.

He stopped Lucas Matthysse in July, last year, romped to a big win over Adrien Broner in January, and now takes on the undefeated Keit Thurman this summer.

Read more: Manny Pacquiao's next opponent Keith Thurman has pushed back against Deontay Wilder's controversial comments, saying boxing is 'not about killing people'

Pacquiao has fought 70 times as a pro fighter, appearing on pay-per-view an extraordinary 24 times. This has generated 20 million sales, or $1.25 billion, Forbes reports.

4: Heavyweight boxing champion Deontay Wilder made $30.5 million.

Deontay Wilder is one of the key reasons heavyweight boxing is experiencing a renaissance in the American market.

He has poor technique, but his power is so extraordinary it seems no man can escape a mid-fight clobbering at some point.

Wilder fought the unbeaten British fighter Tyson Fury in December, last year, and earned more than $10 million.

He recently vanquished Dominic Breazeale after attracting criticism for his controversial kill comments, and has rematches lined up against Luis Ortiz and Fury.

3: Lightweight mixed martial arts contender Conor McGregor made $47 million.

Conor McGregor is known around the world as a mixed martial artist, but Forbes says he is making an increasing amount of cash from his sponsorship deals and his whiskey business.

The Irishman is one of the fight game's most captivating characters because of his merciless trash talk, his showboating in the cage, and his concussive punching.

Last October, he returned to the Octagon for the first time in almost two years but was convincingly beaten by lightweight rival Khabib Nurmagomedov. He reportedly earned a guaranteed $3 million, according to Forbes, with an extra $30 million generated because of the event's popularity at the box office.

McGregor's whiskey brand, Proper no. Twelve, is proving a hit with consumers. His business partner Ken Austin told Business Insider that the company had sold around 200,000 cases. There are even plans to create more expressions as it looks to rival Jameson's as the most popular Irish whiskey on the market.

2: Heavyweight boxing contender Anthony Joshua made $55 million.

With his hulking physique, chiselled abdominals, and million dollar smile, Anthony Joshua is a blue-chip sponsor's dream.

He has deals with many big-name companies including Under Armour, Jaguar LandRover, and Beats by Dre.

Joshua was a silver medalist at the World Amateur Championships in 2011, a gold medal winner at the 2012 Olympic Games, and the unified heavyweight boxing champion until earlier this month when he was upset in the seventh round of an up-and-down barnburner with Andy Ruiz Jr.

Joshua and Ruiz Jr. are expected to fight again later this year.

1: Middleweight boxing champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez made $94 million.

Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, a technically-gifted Mexican boxer, has regularly featured in the best-selling pay-per-view fights of all time.

His popularity is what convinced the market-disrupting streaming service DAZN to pay $365 million for 11 of Alvarez's bouts, the first of which was an easy knockout win over Rocky Fielding, before a decision victory over Daniel Jacobs, last month.

Read more: Sharpened defence, impressive punch resistance, and elite counter attacks: This is how Canelo Alvarez romped to a huge win over Daniel Jacobs to unify three boxing titles

Alvarez has a two-fight rivalry with hard-hitting middleweight Gennady Golovkin, with one win and one draw over the Kazakh puncher. It is likely a third fight will be booked soon.

A photo of Silicon Valley executives visiting an Italian designer is getting slammed for digitally adding in the female executives

  • The Italian fashion designer Brunello Cucinelli recently hosted a number of tech executives at his home in Solomeo, Italy.
  • But an image posted from the summit is now being slammed after it was revealed that the two women present were added into the photo after the fact.
  • The fashion house said in a statement that the doctored photo was created "when we realized we didn't have a shot where all attendees were represented," that it was approved by all the participants before it was posted, and that the design firm "meant no harm or had any malicious intent."
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

A photo featuring the Italian fashion designer Brunello Cucinelli and a number of tech executives is being slammed online for digitally adding in the only two female executives present.

The photo, which Cucinelli posted to his personal Instagram account on May 30, features familiar faces like Dropbox CEO Drew Houston, the LinkedIn cofounder Reid Hoffman, and former Twitter CEO Dick Costolo (Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos was also said to be present but was not in the photo).

But if you look closely, something appears to be off with the two female executives pictured, Peek CEO Ruzwana Bashir and Sunrun co-CEO Lynn Jurich. See for yourself:

You, Leonardos of the Third Millennium, have come to Solomeo from so far away and honoured me with your presence. Together, sitting at the cafe as in an ancient school of philosophy, faced with the beauty of the Umbrian landscape, we have discussed with the kindness of Heraclitus' pòlemos, intensely, serenely, bringing to life the brotherhood of soul and economics that the world expects for the coming centuries. I have seen in you the genius of a young Leonardo, and I therefore expect from you "inventions that can mean great things", as the ancient fathers expected from him. The third millennium will witness innovative and lasting works. #brunellocucinelli #solomeosoulsymposium

A post shared by Brunello Cucinelli (@brunellocucinelli) on May 30, 2019 at 3:00am PDT on

The photo was taken at what was nicknamed the Solomeo Summit in Solomeo, Italy. According to GQ, Cucinelli invited the crew of tech elites to his hometown to talk about how to make the world a better place, to eat, and to take walks in nature.

Read more: Jeff Bezos, Drew Houston, and a group of other tech execs traveled to a remote Italian village to meet with the fashion designer Silicon Valley is obsessed with (and whose sweaters can cost $3,000)

GQ spoke with Cucinelli and one of his guests, the Nextdoor cofounder Nirav Tolia, after the summit, publishing a deep dive into Silicon Valley's infatuation with Cucinelli.

But on Wednesday morning, the BuzzFeed reporter Ryan Mac noticed that the image had been altered:

Business Insider contacted the press line of Cucinelli's namesake fashion house and received the following statement:

"The gathering was an informal affair between friends where we captured some group photos. When we realized we didn't have a shot where all attendees were represented, we added in photos of two female CEOs taken during the weekend. The photos were shared and approved with all the participants including the two women, Lynn Jurich and Ruzwana Bashir, before posting them on Instagram and they also shared the group photo on their own Instagram handles. We meant no harm or had any malicious intent in doing this and we are sorry."

GQ has since removed the image from its post, saying the photo "did not meet GQ's editorial standards."

While the altered image appears to have been a workaround for forgetting to take a group photo at the summit, critics pointed to a larger issue: Only two women were present at the event in the first place.

The 29 riskiest countries for Americans to travel to

sri lanka

  • The US State Department's public travel advisories outline the potential dangers Americans face traveling abroad.
  • The agency uses four levels of travel guidance to inform potential visitors whether the country poses danger, or in some cases, is completely off-limits.
  • These 29 countries are designated "reconsider travel" or "do not travel."
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

The US State Department's public travel advisories let Americans know what countries are safe to travel to and which ones they should be wary of visiting.

The agency uses four levels of travel guidance to let Americans know what to expect in each country:

Level 1 - Exercise normal precautions

Level 2 - Exercise increased caution

Level 3 - Reconsider travel

Level 4 - Do not travel

Twenty-nine countries around the world are designated "reconsider travel" or "do not travel," mostly because of ongoing armed conflicts. These are the nations we've outlined here.

Here are most dangerous countries in the world, ranked from least to most risky based on the State Department's designation levels.

Burundi - Level 3: Reconsider Travel

The State Department warns of armed conflict and violent crime, including grenade attacks and armed robbery, which are common in Burundi amid fiery political tensions.

US authorities have limited abilities to deliver emergency assistance to travelers, even in the case of police raids and violent clashes at the border.

Honduras - Level 3: Reconsider Travel

The State Department warns of violent crime, such as homicide and armed robbery, that runs rampant amid high-level criminal activity, including gang activity, rape, narcotics, and human trafficking.

The Gracias a Dios region is marked as especially dangerous for visitors, as it's "an isolated area with high levels of criminal activity and drug trafficking," where US government agents aren't able to deliver reliable emergency services.

Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador are the three Northern Triangle countries where the majority of migrants are fleeing to come to the US via Mexico.

Mauritania - Level 3: Reconsider Travel

The State Department warns of terrorism and violent crime, including mugging, armed robbery, and assault.

El Salvador - Level 3: Reconsider Travel

The State Department warns of violent crime, such as murder, assault, rape, and armed robbery in addition to widespread gang activity that includes extortion, violent street crime, narcotics, and arms trafficking.

Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador are the three Northern Triangle countries where the majority of migrants are fleeing to come to the US via Mexico.

Chad - Level 3: Reconsider Travel

The State Department warns of terrorism, unmapped minefields along the borders with Libya and Sudan, and violent crime, including armed robbery, carjacking, and muggings.

Nicaragua - Level 3: Reconsider Travel

The US State Department warns of civil unrest, crime, limited healthcare availability, and arbitrary enforcement of laws, and it says violent crime, including sexual assault and armed robbery, is common.

People pretending to be police known as parapolice are also dangerous, the agency warns, and road blocks may prevent food or fuel from reaching some areas.

Democratic Republic of the Congo - Level 3: Reconsider Travel

The State Department warns of civil protests descending into violence and violent crime including armed robbery, armed home invasion, and assault sometimes committed by people posing as police or security agents.

The warning specifies threats of crime, Ebola, and kidnapping in the North Kivu and Ituri provinces in the northeast and armed conflict in the east of the country.

Lebanon - Level 3: Reconsider Travel

The State Department warns of crime, terrorism, kidnapping, and armed conflict.

The agency does not recommend traveling to the borders with Syria or Israel due to terrorism and armed conflict, or to refugee settlements due to the potential for armed conflict.

Niger - Level 3: Reconsider Travel

The State Department warns of terrorism, kidnapping, and violent crime including armed robbery.

The advisory warns of heightened terrorist activity in the areas bordering Mali, Libya, Burkina Faso, and throughout northern Niger. The US government has limited abilities to provide emergency services to travelers as they are restricted to the country's capital and required to maintain thorough security escorts.

Nigeria - Level 3: Reconsider Travel

The State Department warns of crime, terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping and piracy breaking out in rural and urban areas.

US government authorities have limited access to provide emergency services to US citizens who may experience violence, according to the advisory.

Pakistan - Level 3: Reconsider Travel

The State Department warns of terrorism as attacks on major hubs across the country continue.

"Terrorist attacks continue to happen across Pakistan, with most occurring in Balochistan and KPK, including the former FATA," the advisory says. "Large-scale terrorist attacks have resulted in hundreds of casualties."

The US government has a limited ability to provide emergency service to traveling citizens and the US Consulate General in Peshawar is unable to provide any consular services, according to the advisory.

Turkey - Level 3: Reconsider Travel

The State Department warns of terrorism and arbitrary detentions, which the US government has very limited ability to confront if an American citizen is affected.

The agency also warns travelers to avoid areas near the Syria and Iraq border "due to terrorism and kidnapping."

Guinea-Bissau - Level 3: Reconsider Travel

The State Department warns of civil unrest and violent crime, usually perpetrated by aggressive vendors, panhandlers, and criminals who target foreigners at popular spots in the country, including the airport and Bandim Market.

Furthermore, there is no US embassy in Guinea-Bissau.

Sri Lanka - Level 3: Reconsider Travel

The State Department warns of terrorism that targets busy areas across Sri Lanka.

In April 2019, the agency ordered all school-age family members of US government employees to leave the country, and allowed "the voluntary departure of non-emergency US government employees and family members."

Burkina Faso - Level 3: Reconsider Travel

The State Department warns of crime, kidnapping, and terrorism.

The advisory describes a military effort to cut down on widespread terrorism that resulted in declaring a state of emergency in several regions. The agency also warns travelers to avoid certain areas of Ouagadougou, the country's capital city.

Haiti - Level 4: Do not travel

The US State Department warns of crime, civil unrest, and kidnapping. In February 2019, the agency ordered all nonemergency US personnel and their families to return to the US.

Royal Caribbean operates a private cruise port called Labadee on the island, and the area is fenced in and under tight security.

North Korea - Level 4: Do Not Travel

The State Department warns of serious risk of arrest and long-term detention of US nationals and says a US passport is not valid to travel to the country without special permission from the agency.

The advisory also describes how the complicated political relationship between the US and North Korea complicates travelers' safety:

"The US government is unable to provide emergency services to US citizens in North Korea as it does not have diplomatic or consular relations with North Korea. Sweden serves as the protecting power for the United States in North Korea, providing limited emergency services. The North Korean government routinely delays or denies Swedish officials access to detained US citizens."

Afghanistan - Level 4: Do Not Travel

The State Department warns of crime, terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, and armed conflict.

The advisory cites the "critical levels of kidnappings, hostage taking, suicide bombings, widespread military combat operations, landmines, and terrorist and insurgent attacks, including attacks using vehicle-borne, magnetic, or other improvised explosive devices (IEDs), suicide vests, and grenades," as threats to visitors across the country.

US government employees are under strict travel guidelines and require additional security measures for their time in the country.

Central African Republic - Level 4: Do Not Travel

The State Department warns of common violent crimes including armed robbery, aggravated battery, and homicide.

The warning also references armed groups that control large areas and often kidnap civilians, and the US government has limited ability to assist US citizens in the country.

Iran - Level 4: Do Not Travel

The State Department warns of kidnapping, arrest, detention of US citizens in Iran that the US government cannot confront with emergency services.

The advisory says:

"Iranian authorities continue to unjustly detain and imprison US citizens, particularly Iranian-Americans, including students, journalists, business travelers, and academics, on charges including espionage and posing a threat to national security. Consular access to detained US citizens is often denied."

Libya - Level 4: Do Not Travel

The State Department warns of terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, armed conflict, and crime.

Terrorist and militia groups are of particular concern for the threats they pose to travelers, including detaining them at random and without access to legal or embassy resources

The advisory says:

"Outbreaks of violence between competing armed groups can occur with little warning and have the potential to impact US citizens. The capital, Tripoli, and other cities, such as Surman, Al-Jufra, Misrata, Ajdabiya, Benghazi, Sabha, and Dernah, have witnessed fighting among armed groups, as well as terrorist attacks. Hotels and airports frequented by Westerners have been caught in the crossfire. Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence."

Mali - Level 4: Do Not Travel

The State Department warns of terrorism, kidnapping, and violent crime that is especially prevalent in certain areas and targets popular nightclubs, hotels, and places of worship.

The US government has restricted abilities to deliver emergency services to affected visitors.

Somalia - Level 4: Do Not Travel

The State Department warns of crime, kidnapping, piracy, and terrorism that could affect areas frequented by visitors.

Violent crime including murder is common throughout the country, as are illegal roadblocks.

South Sudan - Level 4: Do Not Travel

The State Department warns of armed conflict, kidnapping, and violent crime including carjackings, shootings, ambushes, assaults, robberies, and kidnappings.

Conflicts among various political and ethnic groups have created widespread armed conflict an created a restrictive atmosphere for the abilities of foreign agents like journalists and US government officials, according to the report.

Syria - Level 4: Do Not Travel

The State Department warns of terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, and armed conflict.

The advisory says that "no part of Syria is safe from violence," including "kidnappings, the use of chemical warfare, shelling, and aerial bombardment."

The US Embassy in Damascus suspended its operations in February 2012, and the agency warns that US citizens and Westerners are a target for kidnapping.

Venezuela - Level 4: Do not travel

The State Department warns of crime, civil unrest, poor health infrastructure, kidnapping, and the arbitrary arrest and detention of US citizens. The agency ordered government employees and their families to leave the country in January 2019.

Yemen - Level 4: Do Not Travel

The advisory notes that the US Embassy in Sana'a suspended its operations in February 2015.

Sudan - Level 4: Do Not Travel

Beasts of Balance is a new tabletop stacking game that combines strategy, communication, and competition — my whole family loves it

Beasts of Balance

  • A high-quality stacking game has pieces in a variety of shapes and sizes, involves varying levels of strategy, and is fun enough for the whole family to keep coming back over and over again.
  • I like the Beasts of Balance Family Stacking Game because it works with your iOS or Android device to really liven up the game, you can compete against others, or youngsters and adults alike can have fun playing on their own.
  • Though it's more expensive than your basic stacking game (currently $48 on Amazon), the game play options blow away the alternatives, and there are several expansion packs available for continued enhancement of your experience.

Finding a game that my wife, two sons, and I can all enjoy is virtually impossible. At 16 and 5 years old, there's a seemingly unbridgeable chasm between my sons' interests. The 16-year-old enjoys FPS video games. The 5-year-old spends more time in Candy Land. So, when we can find a game they're both willing to engage in, it's something special, especially when my wife and I also enjoy it.

Beasts of Balance is one of those games that everyone can have fun with. The game was launched in 2016 on Kickstarter by Sensible Object, a London-based game studio that uses connected technology to create gameplay that brings people together. Beasts of Balance introduces brains and technology to the stacking game genre. Below, I'll walk you through the amazing job it does engaging whole families in play.

How It Works

Beasts of Balance comes with:

  • 1 Plinth, the base you stack the artifacts – or pieces — on
  • 6 beast artifacts
  • 2 miracle artifacts
  • 3 migrate artifacts
  • 3 cross artifacts
  • 10 element artifacts

At it's most basic, you scan each artifact on the plinth then stack it on top. You earn points for each artifact you stack. You keep playing until artifacts fall off of your stack. You use the app – available for iOS and Android – to track how you are doing.

However, this is the over-simplistic explanation. There is a degree of strategy involved that is loosely based on real-life resource management. For example, the beasts need elements – water, air, earth, and fire – to prosper. By stacking the element artifacts, you can nurture the beasts and earn more points.

The miracle, migrate, and cross artifacts have additional powers. For instance, the cross artifact causes the beasts you already have stacked to merge to form a new animal. A warthog and shark combine to form a "shoggle." This adds even more points. The migrate artifact causes creatures to leave their natural habitat, like a sea creature may move to the air. The miracle artifacts – oddly shaped pieces that are hard to balance - help you capture points and perform other special actions.

If your stack falls over, you have one second for every point you've earned to re-stack it. If you fail to re-stack it, the game is over.

There are two modes: co-op and battle. Co-op is ideal for single players or for working together. Battle mode involves two or three players competing to see who can get the most points while taking turns stacking one artifact at a time.

Set-up process

Getting the game set up and ready to play only took about 10 minutes. All I had to do was install three AA batteries, download the app, and follow the step-by-step instructions. The instructions guide you in pairing with the plinth and learning what each of the artifacts does. With minimal help from me, my five-year-old, Bucky, was having a blast within a couple of minutes.

What makes this game stand out

This first time Bucky played Beasts of Balance, he was occupied for at least an hour. This allowed me some free time to write. I always appreciate toys that challenge Bucky and keep him engaged. We received the game about six months ago, and Bucky still asks to play it, even though it's designed for ages seven and older. He especially likes playing when friends are over. The game is always a hit.

I like that there's virtually no learning curve to play the game. If you can stack – an activity that develops fine motor skills – you can play. Bucky does not quite grasp how the different pieces interact to win more points, but he has fun with it nonetheless. Plus, as he gets older and starts to understand the concepts being taught, he'll appreciate the game even more.

The game is marketed as a great option for kids, which it is. However, everyone in the family enjoys. There were a few nights when we'd play as a family right after dinner. There were other nights when my wife and I would mess around with it after the kids went to bed. It was fun to idly try to beat my top score while watching a movie.

There are also plenty of expansion packs available with new creatures. We tried out the More Beasts Expansion. It comes with flamingo, angler fish, and chameleon, which have become our favorite pieces. You don't need an expansion pack to have fun, but it's a nice option to have available once you've grown tired of the same pieces.

The artifacts and plinth are incredibly durable, and can withstand being thrown around without any noticeable damage. We only had one minor issue with the pieces when the legs on the flamingo came off. We just stuck them back on, and the piece is fine.

Cons to consider

It always bugs me when products that require batteries don't come with batteries. This is just an added unnecessary chore that I have to put on my "to-do" list. Often times, it also delays the enjoyment of the item. So, I was bummed that Beasts of Balance didn't come with batteries. Build it into the price. Make it a selling point. Don't make more work for me! Fortunately, most people have AA batteries on hand. And, I liked that I could choose to install reusable batteries, which I happened to have on-hand.

Another con is that the battle card expansion pack didn't work for us. The plinth didn't seem to recognize the battle cards. This could be a problem with Android or with the battle cards themselves, but I couldn't find any reviewers online who had the same issue.

The bottom line

Overall, Beasts of Balance is an outstanding game. I love that we can play it together as a family or just have fun messing around with it on our own, and I like that there's so much more to it than just stacking. You really have to use strategy. And, I appreciate that it keeps Bucky entertained.

If you like playing board or stacking games, I strongly recommend adding this to your collection. At $48, it's more expensive than your average board game, but I think it also has better a "replay value" than most alternatives. This is something you can keep coming back to.

What are your alternatives?

Beasts of Balance is really in a class of its own. There are no other stacking games that have such a useful app and require as much cerebral engagement. The most popular stacking games involve blocks or cups, and there really isn't much to them. You get bored quickly. They just don't stack up.

Also, I'm not aware of any board games that do such an excellent job of combining real-life pieces with app connectivity. Beasts is really something special.

Overall, if you want to impress at your next family or friends game night or you are just tired of playing solitaire and want a new challenge, pick up Beasts of Balance.

Pros: Fun for all ages, can play alone or with as many players as you want, compatible with iOS and Android devices, expansion pack availability

Cons: Doesn't come with batteries

Nike's controversial plus-size mannequin is a brilliant business decision

plus size mannequin

Nike's controversy over a plus-size mannequin is highlighting how inclusivity can pay off.

Since Nike debuted its new plus-size mannequin at its flagship store in London, searches of "Nike" and "plus size" on British fashion retailer Love the Sales have grown by 387%, according to the company. Clicks on the Nike One Luxe Tights, which are featured in the photo of the mannequin that went viral, have increased by 200% since the start of this week.

"Newsworthy topics like the one we're seeing with Nike usually cause huge spikes in search for the brand," Love the Sales representative Liam Solomon told Business Insider in an email. "Search for competing brands like Adidas and Under Armour drop consequently, and this usually leads to sales growth for the brand in question."

Read more: People are defending Nike after a journalist slammed the sportswear brand for an 'immense, gargantuan' plus-size mannequin

Many women struggle to find fitness gear larger than a size 12, and retailers rarely highlight plus-size women in marketing.

"There aren't too many sportswear brands pushing plus-size clothing, so Nike is really taking advantage of this and the increased awareness around the subject of plus-size clothing will only bode well for them in terms of sales," Solomon added.

nike

Nike launched its plus-size collection in 2017. The next year, the company added Nike Plus mannequins in select stores in North America, to "showcase inclusivity and inspire the female consumer," according to Nike representative Sandra Carreon-John.

Original reactions to the plus-size mannequins' debut at Nike's London flagship were primarily positive, as people celebrated the choice as empowering and a step in the right direction.

However, journalist Tanya Gold spoke out against the mannequins in an article in The Telegraph, arguing that they encouraged fat acceptance — a movement that she believes to be dangerous, as she says it encourages people to deny health risks related to obesity.

"The new Nike mannequin is not size 12, which is healthy, or even 16 — a hefty weight, yes, but not one to kill a woman. She is immense, gargantuan, vast. She heaves with fat," Gold wrote.

Gold's piece sparked extensive criticism online, as people took issue with her argument that it was impossible to be plus size and healthy. Others noted that it was illogical for Gold to call for people to lose weight while also criticizing a sportswear brand for advertising to plus-size people — presumably so they could work out in the outfit.

Barbra Streisand's former penthouse at 320 Central Park West — also known as the Ardsley — is on the market for $11.25 million. Barbara Fox, founder and president of Fox Residential, has the listing.

According to Fox, Streisand sold the penthouse 18 years ago to its current owners for $4.25 million.

Streisand isn't the only celebrity who has called the penthouse home. Fox also confirmed to Business Insider that before the Ardsley started to sell its units, it served as a rental building where Lorenz Hart, a famous lyricist known for his partnership with composer Richard Rodgers from 1919 to 1943, rented the space.

The entire penthouse totals 6,236 square feet with 11- to 12-foot-high ceilings. It has four bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms, a corner library, and a $12,000 monthly maintenance bill, according to Fox.

The $12,000 monthly maintenance bill goes toward the general upkeep of the building, the staffing of the building, taxes, and mortgage interest, Fox told Business Insider.

  • You can add up to four fingerprint patterns onto the Samsung Galaxy S10, making it easy to unlock the phone with multiple fingers and hands.
  • You can scan multiple fingers when you first set up fingerprint security, or return and add more fingers later.
  • You can find all the fingerprint security options in the Galaxy S10's Settings app on the lock screen page.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Samsung provides many different ways to secure your Galaxy S10. You can use a PIN, of course, or let your phone recognize your face or fingerprint.

If your favorite option is the fingerprint reader, you might want to scan additional fingers to the S10's database, so you can easily unlock the device no matter which hand you use to pick it up.

The good news: You can save a total of four fingerprints. If you've only done one already, you can add up to three more.

How to set up fingerprint scanning on a Samsung Galaxy S10

If you've never set up your Galaxy S10 for fingerprints, then you need to turn the fingerprint security feature on and scan your first finger. If you've already done this, skip down to the section below on adding multiple prints.

1. Open the Settings app and then tap "Lock screen."

2. Tap "Screen lock type" and enter your passcode when requested.

3. On the Screen lock type page, tap "Fingerprints."

Best skincare 2019 4x1

  • On the Insider Picks team, we try a lot of skin-care products
  • We know shopping for great skin care can be overwhelming and expensive, so we made this list of our favorite skin-care products we've tried so far in 2019.
  • Keep reading for our roundup of the 20 skin-care favorites we've tried this year, so far.

When it comes to skin-care shopping, it's too easy to be overwhelmed by the sheer number of options. A quick search on Sephora for moisturizers for sensitive skin yields 283 results. At Ulta you'll find a selection of 386 different face washes. On Amazon, even a specific search like "eye cream for dark circles and puffiness" pulls up over 2,000 products.

With new products constantly releasing and new trends making headlines every week, it can be hard to keep up with what's what in skin care. You probably don't have the time (or energy, or desire) to scroll through pages of eye creams until you find one you like. And, you definitely don't want to spend a ton of money testing them all out.

Luckily, the Insider Picks team has already tested a lot of skin-care products this year. Now we're here to share our favorite finds with you. Whether you're looking for a serum to target a specific skin-care concern or just are looking for some inspiration to upgrade your beauty routine, we've got you covered. Below, you'll find 20 of the best skin-care products we've tried in 2019, so far.

Supergoop! 100% Mineral Matte Sunscreen

Supergoop! 100% Mineral Smooth & Poreless Matte Screen SPF 40, available at Sephora, Nordstrom, and Dermstore, $38

Now that temps are starting to rise, the last thing I want to do is go through my usual multi-step skin-care and makeup only for everything to melt right off as soon as I leave my apartment. But with Supergoop!'s Smooth and Poreless 100% Mineral Matte Screen (say that five times fast), I've streamlined a bunch of products into one. This takes the place of my primer, sunscreen, tinted moisturizer, and mattifying mist. I also like that the light tint masks any white cast I'd normally get with mineral sunscreens. — Jada Wong, Insider Picks editor

Versed Dew Point Moisturizing Gel Cream

Versed Dew Point Moisturizing Gel Cream, available at Target, $14.99

This is my new go-to moisturizer because it's so lightweight, soothing, and makes my skin feel bouncy and plump like jelly. And at $14.99, it's a steal. Versed was developed with reader data from digital publisher Who What Wear, so as shoppers are calling for easier access to safe skin-care products, it's no surprise that this moisturizer is formulated with recognizable ingredients like aloe vera and green tea in a clean formula without parabens, sulfates, and more. — Jada Wong, Insider Picks editor

Versed Day Dissolve Cleansing Balm

Versed Day Dissolve Cleansing Balm, available at Target, $17.99

I tested this out on a weekend trip to Amsterdam and I was so glad I did. Not only did it get every last bit of makeup off easily, it rinsed clean without leaving behind a filmy texture and didn't make my face feel tight afterwards. I especially appreciated the solid balm because it made going through security a little less hectic. Unlike other solid balms I've used, this one doesn't come with a tiny spatula to scoop up product, though, let's be honest — it's probably worse to use a spatula that's been sitting on my counter than it is to just use clean hands.  — Jada Wong, Insider Picks editor

Ren Clean Screen Mattifying Face Sunscreen

Ren Clean Skincare Clean Screen Mattifying Face Sunscreen SPF 30, available at Sephora, and Dermstore, $36

Can you tell I'm big on SPF? I love this newbie from Ren, one of the OGs of clean beauty, for its clean mineral formula. It does give me a white cast compared to Supergoop!'s but I usually wear a tinted powder on top so it doesn't bother me. I love the matte finish too for keeping my oily forehead in check.— Jada Wong, Insider Picks editor

Edible Beauty Probiotic Radiance Tonic Serum

Edible Beauty Probiotic Radiance Tonic Serum Calm and Restore, available at Sephora, $39

I've been using a vitamin c serum that I thought was okay until I decided to try this one  — it made me realize that the vitamin c serum I was using was garbage. Seriously, my skin looked brighter and fresher after just a few drops of this. I might've gone overboard because I used five drops as opposed to the recommended two or three, but that's not a bad thing in my book. In fact, if it didn't cost $39 for a small bottle, I'd slather this all over my face daily. — Jada Wong, Insider Picks editor

Brandless Depuffing Eye Gel

Brandless Depuffing Eye Gel, available at Brandless, $8

Like everyone, I, too, get puffy eyes in the morning, and my fair skin shows dark circles very clearly. I decided to try Brandless' Depuffing Eye Gel, because, hey, it's $8! And I'm impressed with the results. It has a watery, gel-like texture that's easy to pat into my under-eye skin, it absorbs quickly, and makes puffy dark circles disappear thanks to green tea and caffeine. — Malarie Gokey, Insider Picks senior editor

Farmacy Green Defense

Farmacy Green Defense SPF 30, available at Farmacy Beauty, $34

I mix this SPF moisturizer with my Burt's Bees BB Cream every day for light coverage that protects my fair skin from the sun's rays and reduces a bit of my natural redness. It uses zinc oxide and titanium dioxide for sunscreen, but it isn't as thick as other mineral-based SPF moisturizers, so it goes on smoothly. The formula also has marigold extract to decrease inflammation. — Malarie Gokey, Insider Picks senior editor

High Beauty Cannabis Seed Facial Moisturizer

High Beauty High Five Cannabis Seed Facial Moisturizer, available at Sephora, and JC Penny, $40

I've always had a rosy-pink complexion, but it can veer into rosacea territory from time to time. I've tried lots of redness-reducing moisturizers over the years, but none of them have worked as well as High Beauty's High Five Cannabis Seed Facial Moisturizer. I can see the difference: After I wash my face, it inevitably gets red, but the second I rub this moisturizer into my skin, the redness starts to gradually disappear. It sounds like it's hyperbole, but it really isn't. I'm not one to spend a lot of money on anything — I'm more of a $6 moisturizer person — but this, I will pay $40 for. — Malarie Gokey, Insider Picks senior editor

Perricone MD Hyaluronic Intensive Moisturizer

Perricone MD High Potency Classics: Hyaluronic Intensive Moisturizer, available at Sephora, Ulta, and Macy's, $69

Perricone MD recently reformulated some of its best sellers into more intense versions of the originals that have higher concentrations of key ingredients. In this case, the key ingredient is hyaluronic acid, which helps draw moisture from the air into the skin to keep it plump and hydrated. Honestly, I've never met a moisturizer that my dry skin loves more, and that's saying something for the 300+ that I've tried over my life as a product reviewer.

Also, it's not skin-care per se, but the brand's new blendable, $35 liquid blush has been a game-changer for my makeup routine, and I can't sing its praises highly enough. — Sally Kaplan, Insider Picks editor. — Sally Kaplan, Insider Picks editor

Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Clinical Grade Resurfacing Liquid Peel

Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Clinical Grade Resurfacing Liquid Peel, available at Sephora, $95

Everyone at Insider Picks knows I'm a huge fan of  the Dr. Dennis Gross peel pads, but this is basically those pads on steroids. You gently wipe the serums around your face in two layers using a cotton pad, and let it work its magic overnight. All I know is that the blends of various acids in the first step (which I'm not science-savvy enough to truly understand) help to lift off dead skin cells, and the gentle extracts in the second step calm my skin down and keep it hydrated. The result is a seriously smooth, fresh face in the morning. — Sally Kaplan, Insider Picks editor

Tatcha Violet-C Brightening Serum

Tatcha Violet-C Brightening Serum, available at Tatcha, and Sephora, $88

Usually I find that vitamin c serums dry out my skin, but this one from Tatcha makes me glow like a dang unicorn. It's so hydrating, in fact, that I sometimes forget to even add another layer of moisturizer over it, and the bottle has lasted me a really long time. — Sally Kaplan, Insider Picks editor

Malove Refresher Triple AHA Cleanser

Maelove Refresher Triple AHA Cleanser, available at Maelove, $18.95

This is one of the gentlest face cleaners I've tried yet — it's actually specifically formulated for sensitive skin and can be used multiple times per day without irritation — but it still provides a thorough clean that leaves my skin feeling recharged and refreshed. It's infused with peppermint and spearmint oils, so it leaves a minty finish and cools your skin! Unfortunately, it's so popular that it's currently out of stock (a common theme for all Maelove products), but you can signed up to be notified when it's available to buy again. —Ellen Hoffman, Insider Picks director of content strategy

Dermalogica Clear Start Clearing Defense

Dermalogica Clear Start Clearing Defense SPF30, available at Dermstore, and Sephora, $28

Facial sunscreens are hit or miss for me. Dermologica's newest formulation is one of the hits: It's a super-lightweight formula that's made for skin prone to breakouts (yes, please) and easy to layer makeup on top of it (also, yes). It's also made without oxybenzone and avobenzone, two ingredients the Insider Picks team is keeping an eye on after recent sunscreen news that they may be harmful to the oceans and our bodies. —Ellen Hoffman, Insider Picks director of content strategy

Fresh Lotus Youth Preserve Dream Night Cream

Fresh Lotus Youth Preserve Dream Night Cream, available at Nordstrom, and Sephora, $48

My skin is naturally very dry, so I've been applying Fresh's new night cream in the morning and at night for a little extra hydration boost. It works great under makeup, helping to impart a dewy look that I generally have trouble achieving due to my skin's aforementioned dryness. It's essentially an amped-up version of my other favorite Fresh moisturizer for $2 more. —Ellen Hoffman, Insider Picks director of content strategy

Beautycounter Overnight Resurfacing Peel

Beautycounter Overnight Resurfacing Peel, available at Beautycounter, $63

I'm all for slowing down and spending a few minutes every night on a skin-care routine — it's a nice bedtime ritual. But, sometimes I just want to skip all the steps and fall asleep. On a night when I'm tired and running low on time or energy, usually just a moisturizer and eye cream will suffice, but if my skin is looking particularly dull I'll throw in this peel from Beautycounter. As the name suggests, it works to clear dead skin cells and add moisturize skin overnightso you can wake up feeling fresh-faced. It takes half the effort of a typical face mask or peel, but yields the same results while you sleep — that's multitasking at its finest. — Remi Rosmarin, Insider Picks reporter

Moon Juice Plumping Jelly Serum

Moon Juice Beauty Shroom Plumping Jelly Serum, available at Moon Juice, and Sephora, $58

I've already written about how happy I am that this product made its way into my beauty routine in 2019, so I'll keep singing its praises. Whether it's cold weather, dehydration, or lack of sleep, our delicate skin is easily affected by our habits and environments. While your best bet is remedying those first, that's not always possible. The next-best thing is to find an ultra-hydrating product that'll plump up skin to make it look moisturized, supple, and all of those good things we want our skin to look like. For me, that's Moon Juice Beauty Shroom, a lightweight but seriously hydrating jelly serum. — Remi Rosmarin, Insider Picks reporter

Fleur and Bee Collection

Fleur and Bee Collection, available at Fleur & Bee, $18 - $30

Fleur & Bee is a new skin-care line that launched earlier this year that I got to test for work. I really like the fact that all of the products are 100% vegan and cruelty-free, so I know exactly what I'm putting on my face. The products include a toner ($18), vitamin C serum ($30), eye cream ($30), and face cream ($30), all of which work together to keep your face oil-free and hydrated. — Francesca Rea, Insider Picks content producer

Mario Badescu Seaweed Cleansing Soap

Mario Badescu Seaweed Cleansing Soap, available at Amazon, Ulta, and Nordstrom, $14

I needed a cleansing soap that was effective yet gentle when adult acne hit me hard. I was already a big fan of the Mario Badescu Drying Lotion, so I figured I'd try another product from there. I like that it not only cleanses but it also gently exfoliates my skin. It does smell a little bit like the beach at low tide, but that's just because the seaweed extract is hard at work. — Francesca Rea, Insider Picks content producer

Dior Capture Youth Age-Delay Advanced Eye Treatment

Dior Capture Youth Age-Delay Advanced Eye Treatment, available at Nordstrom, Sephora, and Macy's, $75

I'm still in my early twenties, meaning that I have yet to see any serious signs of aging. That being said, I've always tried to be proactive with my anti-aging products, and the Dior Capture Youth line has certainly ranked as one of my favorite lines of skin care. Though it comes with a heftier price tag, the eye treatment does an awesome job at minimizing puffiness on the spot and smoothing my skin throughout the day. I tend to use it in the morning under my makeup and find that it creates a moisturized base for my foundation. — Megan Foster, Insider Picks intern

Nuria Defend Triple Action Eye Cream

Nuria Defend Triple Action Eye Cream, available at Nuria, $40

The Triple Action Eye Cream from Nuria Beauty is my favorite product from the brand's Defend line — one that improves the health of skin and protect against harmful things like pollution in the environment. The texture of the moisturizer goes on smoothly and when I use it before going to bed, I notice that my eyes aren't nearly as puffy in the morning. The neatest part about the eye cream is that the applicator is actually built into the tube so that you won't apply the product with too much pressure or get oils from your hands on your face. — Megan Foster, Insider Picks intern

How to add and customize a Google Calendar to separate your work and personal schedules

Google calendar

Aside from the paper calendar that hangs in the kitchen that my wife keeps updated, my Google calendars are the only place I record upcoming meetings, events, birthdays, and anything else I need to remember.

I love using Google Calendar because, unlike a note jotted down on paper, I can't lose it. And I can access it from my computer, tablet, or phone from anywhere on earth I have web access.

Adding a new Google Calendar is a quick and easy process, and it's worth mastering. Keeping separate calendars for different areas of your life helps you compartmentalize your work and home schedules.

Just make sure you cross-reference each of your calendars when making plans, as it's easy to forget what you have on each individual calendar.

How to add a new Google Calendar and customize it

1. Log into your Google account, then click the Google Apps logo, which is the square formed by nine dots at the top right corner of the screen.

2. Click on the Calendar icon, which is a blue box with the number 31 on it.

Screen Shot 2019 06 12 at 1.41.48 PM

3. Locate the words "Other calendars" on the taskbar at the left and click the plus symbol (+) beside it.

Screen Shot 2019 06 12 at 1.42.40 PM

4. Click the words "Create new calendar."

5. On the page that appears, enter a calendar name, an optional description, and select your preferred time zone, then hit the blue box that reads "Create calendar."

And there you have it, your brand new Google Calendar.

Rihanna's simple calendar hack is her new key to work-life balance

0

Rihanna attends the Fendi Celebration Dinner of the Flagship Store Opening at the Park Hyatt New York on February 13, 2015 in New York, United States.

Rihanna found a few new techniques to help with balancing work and family — hacks so good that even the president is taking note.

The Grammy winner and businesswoman started adding the letter "P" to her calendar to block off personal days, which she takes in two-to-three day chunks. Rihanna began blocking her calendar a couple years ago after she found herself unhappy, both personally and professionally.

"It's only the last couple years that I started to realize that you need to make time for yourself, because your mental health depends on it," she told actress Sarah Paulson in Interview Magazine. "If you're not happy, you're not going to be happy even doing things that you love doing."

Taking time for herself and her family in Barbados improved her mental health and got her more excited about work.

"I never want work to feel like a chore," she said. "My career is my purpose, and it should never feel like anything other than a happy place."

Rihanna also said she started making grocery shopping or going on walks a "big deal" to keep focused on her personal life. Being happy outside work allows her to find more joy in her music and businesses, she told Paulson.

Other successful people often have a "trick" or go-to move that keeps them from working too much. Qualtrics CEO Ryan Smith, for instance, lists out his individual "jobs" that include being a husband and a father as well as being a CEO. This list helps him prioritize improving his family life as much as his company.

Simply eliminating needless tasks altogether can immediately improve your feelings of stress and burnout, career experts say.

And the need for sage work-life balance advice may be needed now more than ever after the World Health Organization classified burnout as a clinical symptom. Still, major CEOs like Richard Branson and Jeff Bezos tout greater integration between your career and your social life.

Someone who seems to agree with Rihanna is President Donald Trump. The commander-in-chief liked a tweet by writer Heben Nigatu calling the pop star a "work/life balance queen," the first time he has liked a message on the platform in almost two years.

This $39 CC cream is essentially a tinted moisturizer with SPF, and it leaves my skin looking naturally dewy all day

cc+

  • Finding face makeup that makes your skin look smooth, supple, and even —but still like your skin— can be difficult.
  • That's why I'm in love with the IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream ($39).
  • This color-correcting cream provides full coverage, but has a lightweight, smooth consistency, leaving your skin looking naturally even and dewy.
  • If you only have time to put on one makeup product each morning, this is a great choice.

I was cautiously excited when I came across the IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream. Most foundations, tinted moisturizers, and BB or CC creams either pack on way too much coverage to the point where my skin looks unnaturally matte, or can't even muster up enough coverage to hide a red spot. The idea that this CC cream would even out my skin tone and hide blemishes but still look like my real skin was exciting, and enough to push me to buy a tube.

Now I'm on my second tube of this product, and when I finish this one I'll be quick to grab another. It makes my skin look and feel too good to go without.

The IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream is a color-correcting cream that provides full coverage and SPF 50. Evening out skin tone, concealing dark spots, brightening skin, and adding moisture are just some of the things the cream promises. While these might seem like hefty assurances, IT Cosmetics delivers with a formula that's super pigmented but still so lightweight.

A one-ounce tube costs $39. While that may sound really small, it's really potent, so a little goes a long way — a single tube has lasted me months, so $39 has actually provided a surprisingly good value. There are 12 different shades offered. I use light, which I find works for me in both winter and summer. But, if you can't find the right shade, you can always try mixing two together.

Using the product is so simple. I squeeze a thick drop of the formula onto my pointer finger, then dab it on my cheeks, forehead, chin, and blend with my fingertips. The warmth of your fingers helps it melt right into your skin, making for a smooth application. You don't need a brush, makeup sponge, or any other fancy tool to blend it, and the creamy consistency ensures there will be no stark or streaky lines left over. Sometimes, I'll follow up with a quick flick of mascara, sweep of blush, and a little under-eye concealer for a natural, but just a little "done up" look. But most mornings I'll just rub a little of this on and call it a day.

itcccream

Bottom line

When I'm wearing this CC cream, my skin always looks naturally radiant. The redness around my nose and cheeks is totally disguised and my skin tone looks even without visible blemishes, but there are still freckles, birthmarks, and some shiny spots on my forehead that make my skin look like just that — skin.

After a long day, the product doesn't crack or crease, but the coverage endures. It makes sense, since this CC Cream is loaded with hydrating, skin-smoothing ingredients you'd find in your favorite moisturizers like hyaluronic acid, peptides, and collagen. An added mineral sunscreen (SPF 50) is a bonus. While most sunscreens have a thick, almost goopy consistency, the added SPF doesn't change the consistency of this product at all. I even use the It Cosmetics CC Cream in place of a foundation at nighttime, when there is no sun in sight, as I love the even, glowy coverage it gives. If I'll be spending time outside, I'm always sure to layer a real sunscreen underneath this cream, but the added SPF feels like a nice safety net.

This is how I want my skin to look when I wake up, but for now I'll just have to be happy with the fact that it's how my skin looks after applying the IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream

Amazon is full of things to discover, from new private labels to hidden services and special discounts.

Nearly every time I shop on the site, I stumble upon a new section I've never even heard of before. My latest find being the Just for Prime section, where Prime members can find exclusive deals, discounts, and offers just for them. As if you didn't already have more than enough reasons to justify your Amazon Prime membership, here's another.

Most of the deals are on Amazon's own products and services, like discounts on Audible, Whole Foods deliveries, and Fire tablets. I found four standouts that are worth taking advantage of now, but you can always scope out the page yourself to find other deals you might want to shop.

Keep reading for four of the best exclusive deals and discounts you can take advantage of right now with your Amazon Prime membership.

Save $30 on a Fire HD 10 tablet

Amazon's Fire HD 10 tablet looks sleek, performs streaming tasks well, and is particularly user-friendly. The tablet even impressed one of our reporters, who happens to be a long-time iPad owner. One of the advantages of this tablet is once it's set up, your Amazon account will be automatically linked — so you can access your Kindle books and anything else you've bought with the site. Having all of this baked right into the tablet makes it a great choice for anyone, but particularly for frequent Amazon users. Amex Centurion Lounge Phoenix

American Express Platinum cardholders have another new airport lounge to look forward to.

AmEx has announced its newest Centurion Lounge will be opening at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, the sixth new location announced in the past two years.

Currently scheduled to open in 2020, the Phoenix Centurion Lounge joins lounges currently under construction in New York's JFK airport, Los Angeles, Denver, Charlotte, and London Heathrow.

Phoenix Centurion Lounge

The Phoenix lounge will be located in Terminal 4, which serves major airlines including American Airlines and Southwest.

In addition, AmEx is working with MAG USA, an airport experience company, to open a third-party Escape Lounge.

While Centurion Lounges are exclusive to AmEx Platinum cardholders, customers with the small-business version of the card (the Business Platinum® Card from American Express), and the invite-only Centurion Card members, the Escape Lounges can also be accessed by anyone who purchases a day pass for $45 (or $40 in advance).

Phoenix Escape Lounge

According to American Express, both lounges will offer complimentary food, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, seating areas, Wi-Fi, showers, and more. Since cardholders have access to both, they can choose either space, depending on which has more space.

The Phoenix location is the first new Centurion Lounge to be announced in 2019, and represents a continued push to offer demonstrable value as competition among rewards credit cards remains high.

Phoenix Escape Lounge

Including Phoenix, six new locations are slated to open between this year and 2020 — the others are in New York-JFKDenver International AirportLos Angeles International Airport, Charlotte Douglas Airport, and London Heathrow. AmEx currently operates eight Centurion Lounges in US airports, and one in Hong Kong.

In addition to the Centurion Lounges, American Express operates 11 "International American Express Lounges" at foreign airports, including in Mumbai, Delhi, Buenos Aires, Mexico City, Sydney, and, most recently announced, Melbourne. International lounges tend to to vary depending on the market, while Centurion Lounges are designed to offer a relatively consistent experience, according to a representative for AmEx.

Aside from the American Express-branded lounges, AmEx Platinum cardholders can access Delta Sky Club lounges at 33 airports when flying with Delta, and more than 1,200 additional lounges through the Priority Pass network.

12 common tech myths you should stop believing today

0

charging iphone close up

  • Although we use technology like smartphones and social networks on a daily basis, there are still some misconceptions about how these products work.
  • From whether or not browsing in private mode actually keeps your history secret, to the notion that Macs can't get viruses, here's some clarity around several common tech myths.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Despite how often we use devices like smartphones and laptops, we still have plenty of questions about how they work.

Here's a look at some of the most common misunderstandings about the tech products we use every day — from whether it's harmful to keep your phone plugged in overnight, to the idea that web browsing in Incognito mode keeps you completely anonymous, to whether closing apps actually help your iPhone's battery last longer.

While the answers to some of these myths may be a bit more complicated than a simple true or false, below you'll find explanations that can help provide clarity.

SEE ALSO: Apple's iOS 13 software is further proof that the company is fixing one of the iPhone's biggest criticisms

1. Mac computers can’t get viruses.

Apple computers are susceptible to malware, too. Apple used to brag that its computers aren't as vulnerable as Windows PCs to viruses, but the company quickly changed its marketing language after a Trojan affected thousands of Mac computers in 2012.

2. Closing apps on your iPhone saves battery life.

There are many myths about how the batteries in our smartphones work, but the notion that closing apps extends battery life is among the most prominent. As it turns out, swiping away all of those apps running in the background on your iPhone doesn't do anything to further your device's battery life.

In 2016, an Apple fan actually emailed CEO Tim Cook to get the final word on whether or not closing apps improves battery life. Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of software engineering, answered in Cook's place, as 9to5Mac reported at the time. The email asked whether Cook quits his iOS multitasking apps frequently and whether this is necessary for battery life, to which Federighi replied: "No and No."

3. Private/Incognito browsing keeps you anonymous.

There's a misconception that "incognito" and "private" are synonymous with anonymous. If you're using Incognito Mode in Google Chrome or Private browsing in Safari, it simply means the browser won't keep track of your history or automatically log into any of your accounts. Basically, it's good for keeping other people who use your computer from seeing what you've been doing. But it won't keep your identity or your ISP hidden from the sites you visit — so keep that in mind if you're visiting sites you shouldn't be.

4. It's impossible to track a smartphone without GPS.

While GPS is certainly one way to pinpoint the location of a mobile device, it's not the only way. It's also possible to track a cell phone via Wi-Fi networks and cell towers, as the Pew Research Center noted in a study from 2017.

Last year, researchers at Northwestern University also demonstrated how it's possible to infer a device's location by gathering data from other sensors, such as the accelerometer and gyroscope in your phone, as CNBC reported.

5. Facebook uses your phone's microphone to listen in on private conversations.

Given the ongoing privacy scandals that have surrounded Facebook over the past year, there are plenty of reasons why the general public may be skeptical of the social network.

But a persistent myth that's floated around for years is the idea that Facebook eavesdrops on personal conversations and then later serves ads based on what you say. That simply isn't true, says Facebook.

The belief came about as people began to come forward with stories over the years in which they had encountered Facebook ads that closely mirrored recent conversations. For example, one couple saw wedding ads the day after they had gotten engaged, before they had even told anyone, as the BBC reported.

Facebook issued a statement in 2016 to debunk this claim. "Facebook does not use your phone's microphone to inform ads or to change what you see in the News Feed," the company wrote. "We show ads based on people's interest and other profile information — not what you're talking out loud about."

6. Leaving your phone plugged in damages the battery.

Like most people, you probably leave your phone plugged in overnight long after the battery is fully charged. There has been a general perception that doing so will damage your smartphone's battery, but the truth is actually more complicated.

Leaving your phone plugged in doesn't damage your device, per se. But Dominik Schulte, managing director of German battery technology consultancy firm BatterieIngenieure, previously told Business Insider that leaving your smartphone at 100% for extended periods of time can cause it to age faster. Other experts, however, have said that charging your phone overnight will have no noticeable impact on the battery aging process.

7. You should always let your iPhone battery completely die before recharging.

This, too, is a popular myth. Apple points out on its website that you can charge your iPhone whenever you want without worrying about the battery. "You complete one charge cycle when you've used (discharged) an amount that equals 100% of your battery's capacity — but not necessarily all from one charge."

8. More megapixels always means a better camera.

The megapixel has become the standard specification by which many people evaluate smartphone cameras, but there are many factors that impact a camera's performance. The size of the pixels is actually more important than the number of pixels, considering larger pixels are capable of absorbing more light. So looking at the sheer number of pixels, and ignoring other factors like the size of the pixels and the sensor, won't provide an accurate sense of the camera's overall quality.

9. Higher resolution always means a better smartphone display.

As is the case with its camera, there are several factors that contribute to a smartphone's screen quality. Resolution is one of these factors, but certainly not the only one.

The type of panel used is also critical in determining display quality. A phone made with an OLED display panel versus LCD may show bolder colors and deeper contrast regardless of the resolution, for example.

Some smartphone makers have added specific features that can make their device's screens look different as well. Apple's iPhones, for example, have a feature called True Tone that adjusts the white balance according to the device's surroundings, another factor that impacts how content looks on the iPhone's screen.

10. You shouldn't use your iPad charger for your iPhone.

Apple says it's fine to use the power adapter that comes with your iPad or Mac to charge your iPhone. Doing so may even power up your smartphone more quickly than the smaller charger that came in the box with your iPhone.

However, Steve Sandler, founder and chief technical officer at electronics analysis company AEi Systems, told Popular Mechanics that this could stress your iPhone's battery over time if you do it regularly. It would take about a year, however, to notice any changes in battery efficiency.

11. Holding a magnet close to your computer will erase all of its data.

This technically isn't wrong — you may remember how easy it was to wipe a floppy disk using a magnet back in the day. But you would need a really, really big magnet to wipe out your computer's hard drive. Experts told PCMag that hard drives on modern computers would only be susceptible to really strong magnets with really focused magnetic fields — so your average refrigerator magnet wouldn't do the trick.

12. Cellphones give you cancer.

Most studies conducted so far haven't found a link between cell phone usage and the development of tumors, but research thus far has been limited, according to the American Cancer Society.

There are a few reasons why research has been constrained so far, as the organization notes on its website: studies over the long term haven't been conducted yet, cell phone use is constantly changing, and many studies so far have focused on adults only rather than children.
