samsung galaxy s10 lineup

  • You can change your Samsung Galaxy S10's screen resolution to help you see photos and videos in the highest quality possible, or in two lower tiers of resolution.
  • The Galaxy S10 comes with its middle resolution enabled by default to save battery life, but it's easy to change at any time from the Settings app.
  • Changing to the WQHD+ resolution gives you the sharpest, highest quality display on your Galaxy S10.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Measuring 6.1 inches and featuring a nearly bezel-free, edge-to-edge curved screen, the Samsung Galaxy S10 has one of the largest, sharpest screens ever to grace a smartphone. But by default, Samsung hasn't set the phone at its highest resolution.

Out of the box, your Galaxy S10 uses the middle resolution, called FHD+, mainly to conserve battery life. That said, many users think it's worth the somewhat reduced battery to see photos and video at the Galaxy S10's highest possible resolution.

The Galaxy S10 has three different resolutions you may choose from:

  • HD+ is 1520 x 720 pixels.
  • FHD+ (Full High Definition Plus) is 2280 x 1080 pixels. This is the default.
  • WQHD+ (Wide Quad High Definition Plus) is 3040 x 1440 pixels.

Here's how to change the display to the resolution of your choice, whether you want to set it higher or lower.

How to change a Samsung Galaxy S10's screen resolution

1. Start the Settings app.

2. Tap "Display."

3. Tap "Screen Resolution" to see all of your options.

How North Korean leader Kim Jong Un became one of the world's most feared dictators

kim jong un

  • North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is regarded as one of the world's most repressive and bombastic rulers.
  • After a year of ushering in historic international peace agreements and much discussion over North Korea's nuclear arsenal, Kim's rule continues to cause concern on the world stage.
  • Despite his high-profile career, there is still relatively little known of the reclusive 35-year-old.
  • Here is the story of how he became one of the world's scariest dictators.
  • Visit BusinessInsider.com for more stories.

Kim Jong Un assumed leadership at such a young age that many thought his rule would be doomed.

The current head of the family dynasty that's ruled North Korea since the 1950s has overseen several nuclear tests, dozens of missile tests, and presided over his country's shocking, uninvited entrance into the nuclear club.

After having the most tense, heated exchanges with a US commander in chief in his country's history, Kim met with President Donald Trump twice.

Between threats of nuclear annihilation, brinkmanship, and attacks on South Korea, Kim has kept a firm grip on power throughout, and his people have very few freedoms.

With all this attention, still relatively little is known of Kim. But thanks to a new book from Washington Post Beijing bureau chief Anna Fifield, "The Great Successor," we now know more about his secretive childhood.

Here's what we know of how Kim grew to be one of the world's scariest dictators.

Paul Szoldra and Veronika Bondarenko contributed to a previous version of this post.

DON'T MISS: The mysterious life of Kim Jong Un's wife, Ri Sol Ju — who probably has 3 children and frequently disappears from the public eye

Kim Jong Un was born on January 8 — 1982, 1983, or 1984.

His parents were future North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il and his consort, Ko Young Hee. He had an older brother named Kim Jong Chul and would later have a younger sister named Kim Yo Jong.

While Kim Jong Un's official birth year is 1982, various reports suggest that the year was changed for symbolic reasons, including that it was 70 years after the birth of Kim Il Sung and 40 years after the birth of Kim Jong Il.

But when the US Treasury Department sanctioned Kim Jong Un in 2016, the agency listed his official date of birth as January 8, 1984.

Kim, here with his mother, lived at home as a child.

During this period, North Korea was ruled by "Great Leader" Kim Il Sung. While Kim Jong Il was the heir apparent, Kim Jong Un's path to command was far less certain.

Then it was off to Switzerland to attend boarding school.

Called "Pak Un" and described as the son of an employee of the North Korean embassy, Kim Jong Un attended an English-language international school in Gümligen, near Bern.

He lived in the suburbs with his aunt, Ko Yong Suk, his uncle, Ri Gang, and their three children, according to Anna Fifield's book, "The Great Successor: The Divinely Perfect Destiny of Brilliant Comrade Kim Jong Un."

Some former classmates described him as a quiet student who spent most of his time at home, but had a sense of humor.

"He was funny," former classmate Marco Imhof told The Mirror in 2011. "Always good for a laugh."

"He had a sense of humor; got on well with everyone, even those pupils who came from countries that were enemies of North Korea," another former classmate told the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag. "Politics was a taboo subject at school ... we would argue about football, not politics."

But others pained Kim as an unremarkable boy who was bad at school and lashed out at others.

According to Fifield's book, classmates said Kim was embarrassed to answer questions in class and frequently lashed out because he struggled to speak in German.

"He kicked us in the shins and even spat at us," a former classmate told her.

The book also outlines how Kim was introverted, avoided girls, and lived in Adidas tracksuits with Nike sneakers.

Kim Jong Un loved basketball and idolized Michael Jordan.

The young Korean reportedly had posters of Jordan all over his walls during his Swiss school days. Although Kim Jong Un was overweight and only 5-foot-6, he was a decent basketball player.

"He was a fiercely competitive player, very explosive," former classmate Nikola Kovacevic told The Mirror. "He was the play maker. He made things happen."

"He hated to lose. Winning was very important," said former classmate Marco Imhof.

He also had a "fantastic" collection of Nike sneakers.

After school in Switzerland, he returned home for military schooling.

Upon his return to North Korea, Kim Jong Un attended Kim Il Sung Military University with his older brother. Some reports say they started to attend their father's military field inspections around 2007.

While his father faced death, Kim Jong Un was rapidly promoted up the chain of political and military leadership, despite having little experience in either.

He was made a four-star general, deputy chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party, and a member of the Central Committee, according to the BBC.

Kim Jong Un has a theme song known as "Footsteps."

"Footsteps" looks and sounds like a propaganda song from the Soviet Union.

The song calls people to follow in "Our Admiral Kim's footsteps." Here's a sampling of the lyrics:

Footsteps, footsteps ... spreading out further the sound of a brilliant future ahead ... tramp, tramp, tramp, ah, footsteps.

Many North Koreans see Kim Jong Un as a youthful version of "Great Leader" Kim Il Sung.

Kim bears a clear resemblance to his grandfather, Kim Il Sung, in appearance, haircut, and mannerisms.

Rumors had circulated that Kim Jong Un had received plastic surgery to enhance the resemblance even further, although the North finally responded and called the allegations "sordid hackwork by rubbish media."

"The false report ... released by enemies is a hideous criminal act which the party, state, army and people can never tolerate," said the official Korean Central News Agency.

After his father died, Kim Jong Un was quickly declared "Supreme Leader" of North Korea.

When Kim Jong Il died of a heart attack on December 17, 2011, the young Kim Jong Un inherited the world's fourth-largest military, a nuclear arsenal, and absolute control over North Korea.

He took over ahead of his older brother Kim Jong Chol, whom their father thought was "effeminate" and weak. His other brother Kim Jong Nam apparently said negative things about the regime, according to The Australian. He was killed in 2017, reportedly on the orders of North Korea.

Taking the reins of the country when he was around 30, Kim Jong Un was the youngest head of state in the world when he took power.

Some originally believed that Kim Jong Un's aunt and uncle were actually calling the shots.

Among Kim Jong Un's most trusted advisers were his aunt Kim Kyong Hui and her husband, Jang Sung Taek, both 66. The couple was reportedly ordered by Kim Jong Il to control the country's military and help the young leader consolidate his position while he gains more experience.

At a meeting of the DPRK Workers' Party, both were photographed sitting close by. Their most important job, it seems, is to push his role as a powerful figure among some generals who do not trust him, according to The Telegraph.

But at the end of December 2013, Kim Jong Un had his uncle and his uncle's family executed, apparently in a bid to stop a coup against his rule.

On December 12, 2013, Kim Jong Un had his uncle Jang Sung Taek executed. He was charged with having tried to take control of North Korea through a military coup.

Following the uncle's execution, there were reports that Kim Jong Un continued to purge the rest of the uncle's family.

But North Korea's ambassador to the UK denied that Jang Sung Taek's family was also executed. Instead, the ambassador claimed that only Jang Sung Taek was killed by firing squad following a trial.

He's married to a former cheerleader and may have three kids.

Leaders in the Hermit Kingdom are often very secretive when it comes to their significant others, but Kim Jong Un often has his wife join him and allows photographs.

North Korean media revealed in July that he was married to Ri Sol Ju— a former cheerleader and singer — but no one knows exactly when they were married, according to NBC News.

South Korean intelligence believe the couple probably married in 2009 and had their first child in 2010.

Ri Sol Ju reportedly gave birth to a girl in 2013, and is believed to have had a third child in 2017.

Kim Jong Un lived out a childhood fantasy when former Chicago Bulls star Dennis Rodman visited.

Everyone in the family is apparently a huge Chicago Bulls fan.

His father owned a video library of "practically every game Michael Jordan played for the Chicago Bulls." Kim Jong Il tried unsuccessfully to get Jordan to visit in 2001.

Kim Jong Un had tons of Jordan posters as a kid. Brother Kim Jong Chol was photographed as a child wearing a Bulls Jersey: No. 91 — Rodman.

In the first years of his rule, things didn't go so well.

In 2013, Kim was reportedly the target of an assassination attempt. South Korean intelligence believes the young leader was targeted by "disgruntled people inside the North" after he demoted a four-star general, which resulted in a power struggle.

Perhaps as a means of reasserting control, Kim Jong Un has become extremely belligerent, shutting down all links with South Korea and threatening thermonuclear war against his neighbor and the US. His father and grandfather used to make these threats all the time without following through.

Kim Jong Un continued to be belligerent with South Korea and the West throughout his rule in hopes of bolstering his authority.

North Korea has continued to test ballistic missiles and nuclear devices under Kim Jong Un's rule, despite the threat of sanctions. In 2012, the country launched its first satellite into space.

Since Kim Jong Un has taken over, the country has continued to push ahead with its construction of ballistic and nuclear weapons.

In 2013, North Korea conducted its third-ever nuclear test and its first under Kim Jong Un. Since then, Kim Jong Un has overseen three additional nuclear tests, including the test of a hydrogen bomb, which is much more powerful, and dozens of missile tests, including missiles with the range to reach the US.

The nuclear tests and international condemnations continued into 2017.

On September 3, 2017, North Korea conducted its sixth and largest nuclear test, which experts estimate was many times the size and of the bombs the US dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki to close out World War II. Pyongyang claims the test was a miniaturized hydrogen bomb.

Kim's sprint to nuclear capability, and each test along the way, drew international condemnation.

In response to North Korea's continued nuclear testing, world leaders have strongly come out against the Kim regime. Even Kim's treaty and ideological allies in China and Russia have signed on to sweeping sanctions and condemnations against North Korea's nuclear program.

That test was followed up by a series of increasingly successful ballistic missile launches that have landed in the Sea of Japan. North Korea has also successfully test launched a ballistic missile from a submarine.

The assassination of Kim's half-brother Kim Jong-Nam in a Malaysian airport led to a global investigation of North Korea's involvement.

On February 13 2017, Kim's half-brother Kim Jong Nam was fatally poisoned in a Kuala Lumpur airport.

Amid worldwide suspicion of North Korean involvement, Malaysian police conducted an autopsy against the wishes of the Kim's government and named a North Korean official and several other nationals as suspects, alongside two foreign women believed to be working as hired assassins.

By March, the conflict between the former allies escalated after Malaysia directly accused the North Korean government of orchestrating the murder. North Korea issued an order that prevented Malaysian citizens from leaving the country while Malaysia responded by canceling visa-free entry to North Koreans.

In the Trump era, conflict with North Korea reached a new high.

Shortly after taking office, President Donald Trump reportedly labeled North Korea the single biggest threat to the US.

Breaking with former President Barack Obama's attempts at diplomatic negotiation via "strategic patience," the Trump administration started demanding North Korea's immediate de-nuclearization and hinted at the possibility of a preemptive military strike if its impulsive leader does not comply.

In April 2017, Kim retaliated by unsuccessfully test launching another nuclear missile at the same time that US Vice President Mike Pence was scheduled to discuss the country's arms program in Seoul, South Korea. After the US threatened a "pretty significant international response" in the event of another test, a North Korean envoy warned that nuclear war could break out at "any moment."

And in November 2017, North Korea has tested intercontinental-range ballistic missiles with the express purpose of threatening the US mainland — something which Trump swore he would prevent.

Throughout 2017 and early 2018, North Korea continued its nuclear threats, and Trump continued to taunt Kim. In December 2017, then-National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster said the chance of war was "increasing every day."

But then 2018 ushered in the possibility of peace on the Korean peninsula.

A secret trip to Beijing in March 2018 marked Kim's first known trip outside North Korea since becoming supreme leader in 2011 and a historic departure from years of deteriorating relations with China.

Following up on his New Year's address that called for "peace and stability" between the two nations, Kim was the first leader to set foot on South Korean soil as part of a summit with South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

The two leaders agreed to seek an end to the armistice agreement and sign a peace treaty, as well as achieve "complete" denuclearization.

Other measures that were announced included ending all propaganda broadcasts and leaflet drops along the border, creating a joint liaison office for the two countries, and holding four-way talks with the US and China.

Kim has continued his country's close relationship with China throughout his reign.

In January 2019, Kim Jong Un rode his personal armored train to China to spend his 35th birthday with Chinese President Xi Jinping. It was Kim's fourth trip to China in a year.

He rode his personal armored train to Beijing for a four-day summit with China, which is North Korea's most important trading partner and a buffer against pressure from the US.

After a fiery start, relations between Trump and Kim softened to suggest a new era for the two countries.

After Trump tweeted in January 2018 that his nuclear button was bigger than Kim's, the US placed what Trump described as the "heaviest ever" sanctions against North Korea in February, which the country decried as "an act of war."

In March 2018, Trump accepted Kim's offer for a meeting to discuss denuclearization, which would later result in a historic first-timemeeting between the two leaders and the signing of an agreement that called for establishing new US-North Korea relations and supporting building a stable peace regime on the Korean Peninsula.

But many experts were wary that North Korea wasn't held to strict, specific requirements to denuclearize.

Though the meeting was widely received as a positive development for global relations, many experts and some Trump administration officials were reportedly frustrated with the slow-moving reality of denuclearization and concerned with the president's "very public embrace" of Kim.

After intelligence processed in late 2018 suggested the rogue state has privately continued its nuclear activities, officials grew wary of Kim's previous promises for progress that eventually gave way to threats toward the US as relations with China and South Korea blossomed.

Trump announced during his February 2019 State of the Union address that he and Kim would meet in Vietnam for a second summit, and remained optimistic about Kim's intentions.

"As part of a bold new diplomacy, we continue our historic push for peace on the Korean Peninsula," Trump said in his address. "Our hostages have come home, nuclear testing has stopped, and there has not been a missile launch in 15 months."

Trump's comments were in harsh contrast to widespread reports the US intelligence community had seen little progress towards denuclearization after the June 2018 summit. A January 2019 report from the director of national intelligence concluded Pyongyang is "unlikely" to give up its nuclear weapons program.

Despite the indications that progress had fizzled, Trump touted optimism.

"If I had not been elected President of the United States, we would right now, in my opinion, be in a major war with North Korea with potentially millions of people killed," Trump added. "Much work remains to be done, but my relationship with Kim Jong Un is a good one. And Chairman Kim and I will meet again on February 27 and 28 in Vietnam."

Ahead of Trump's arrival to the summit, reports again turned to Kim's mysterious habits and travel logistics.

Kim was spotted by hidden cameras smoking a cigarette in rural China after most of his nearly three-day, 2,000-mile train journey to the summit in a rare candid glimpse of the leader standing with his sister and an aide nearby.

His choice to take a train to the summit was still up for speculation, with analysts floating several possibilities on the trip as possible commentary on North Korea's relations with China, one saying the leader didn't want to look needy.

But the second summit largely ended in failure.

Trump said the summit ended early because Kim wanted total sanctions relief in exchange for only a few nuclear site closures.

North Korea contradicted Trump's reason for the collapsed summit in a rare press conference, and true to form, state media hailed the summit as "extraordinary" and "successful."

It's unclear where Kim will take North Korea next.

The US and North Korea seem stalled on sanctions and nuclear tests, but the two leaders remain friendly — much to the concern of foreign policy experts.

Trump praised a "beautiful letter" he received from Kim this week, which was reportedly birthday greetings for the president's 73rd on June 14.

"I think North Korea under [Kim's] leadership has tremendous potential," Trump told reporters.

How to change a Samsung Galaxy S10's display mode, adjusting its brightness, colors, font size, and more

galaxy s10 s10 plus s10 e

The Samsung Galaxy S10 includes several ways to change its display, and they are all conveniently located on the Settings app's Display page.

Samsung includes a night mode for more comfortable viewing at night, a "vivid" color mode if you want more saturated colors, the ability to tweak the font, and more. You can even choose among three screen resolutions for sharper (but more power-intensive) graphics.

How to change a Samsung Galaxy S10's display mode

1. Start the Settings app and tap "Display."

display 1

2. There are a lot of display options you can customize on the Display page. Here is an overview of the most important settings you can control:

  • Brightness. You can manually adjust the brightness slider to make the screen easier to read in different lighting conditions.
  • Adaptive brightness. This feature is on by default. If you leave it on, it remembers the brightness setting you've used in different lighting conditions and automatically adjusts the display when it encounters similar conditions.
  • Blue light filter. If you turn this on, it reduces the amount of blue light emitted by the phone to reduce eye strain. This is especially useful at night. Tap "Blue light filter" to turn it on or to schedule it to only turn on at night.

display 2

  • Screen mode. By default, the screen is set to display "natural" colors. If you prefer, you can tap "Vivid" to increase the saturation of colors on screen. It's somewhat less realistic, but adds more visual punch to the display.

display 3

  • Font size and style. Tap "Font size and style" to change the size and font type of text on the screen. For added readability, you can make all text bold by turning on "Bold font."
  • Screen zoom. For added readability, tap "Screen zoom" and adjust the size of elements on screen. This is different than font size, since it increases the size of all screen elements, not just text.

How to quickly change the brightness control on a Galaxy S10

You don't need to open the Settings app to change the brightness. To quickly get to the brightness controls, pull down the control panel from the top of the screen. Then pull it down a second time, and you will see the brightness slider at the bottom of the screen.

This $18 natural deodorant that's all over Instagram is the first one I've tried that I feel actually works

megababe

  • While natural deodorants have become popular for their clean ingredients, they have a reputation for not doing the best job at banishing body odor.
  • Megababe's Rosy Pits ($18) is a natural deodorant that smells as good as it looks, and it's received a lot of hype over the last year — 13,000 people were on a waitlist for it last summer.
  • I've been using Rosy Pits for a while now, and it's also the first natural deodorant I've tried that I feel really works.

If a product has a 13,000-person waitlist, I'm intrigued. If that product is a deodorant, I'm really intrigued.

That product just so happens to beMegababe's Rosy Pits. It's the aluminum-free deodorant that — since its release — has been garnering hype for its natural formula, adorable packaging, and serious stink prevention.

Natural deodorants have become increasingly popular as consumersquestion the safety of ingredients used in antiperspirants, most notably aluminum. The problem is that most natural deodorants don't do that great of a job of keeping sweat and B.O. at bay. For many, making the switch to natural deodorant feels like a begrudging compromise. While it's supposedly healthier for your body, if it doesn't do its job of keeping you smelling fresh and clean, then what's the point of using it at all?

I've dabbled in all kinds of deodorants — natural or not — to find one that keeps me smelling fresh all day and doesn't leave any annoying white marks on my clothes. I wear black way too much to deal with that. I don't think of myself as a particularly sweaty person, but the natural deodorants I had tried in the past never kept my pits dry, let alone "rosy." So, I was excited to give the Megababe's deodorant a try and see what all the hype was about. What better time to try it than during a New York City summer?

Before even getting to the actual deodorant, there's the packaging, and it's really cute. A minimalist shape, fun fonts, and a millennial pink cap make this a deodorant that you'd want to keep visible on your dresser sandwiched between some tubes of Glossier makeup and an Otherland candle. While deodorant isn't something that we usually want to show off, let alone talk about, Megababe is all about de-stigmatizing personal care products by creating solutions for the issues that all women face but have been told to keep quiet about, like boob sweat and chafing thighs.

mega

Twisting off the cap releases an overwhelming scent, but not in a bad way. While most deodorants offer only subtle aromas, Rosy Pits is fragrant. It's a little floral, kind of musky, but all around intoxicating. Imagine spritzing on your favorite floral perfume and then running barefoot through a verdant forest — the scent of flowers, herbs, trees all whirling together — that's what you might get from a whiff of Rosy Pits.

While it smells good from a first impression, you have to wonder if it would smell good after a long day of work, going to the gym, and riding the subway. I have to be honest, the first few days were not great. My body was used to barely sweating at all thanks to my usual antiperspirant, so the natural deodorant was an adjustment — that is to say I was significantly more sweaty. Megababe's website addresses this though and notes that it will take most bodies two weeks to adjust to Rosy Pits, especially if coming from a traditional antiperspirant. After doing a little research, it seemed like my best bet during these two weeks would be to reapply, and do it often. I kept Rosy Pits in my bag so I could reapply before I worked out, after I worked out, and even if I just started to smell a little during the day. A quick swipe will immediately cover any B.O. and have you smelling rosy yet again. Now, after using this deodorant for over two weeks, one application a really is enough to last the day.

It smells great and it's free of aluminum, parabens, and other toxins, but there are a few more benefits too. One of the main ingredients is coconut, which not only has antifungal properties but also is a great moisturizer, so it'll keep your underarms nice and smooth. There's also green tea and vitamin e included, which are particularly helpful in soothing irritation, especially if you have sensitive skin. Then, there's sage, sandalwood, and horsetail plant, which contribute to that musky scent, but also help protect against bacteria. In exchange for aluminum, Rosy Pits uses cornstarch to help absorb moisture — it's not guaranteed to wick all moisture away, but after a while it'll get pretty close.

I don't even think of Rosy Pits as a natural deodorant anymore, I just think of it as the deodorant I actually want to use. It doesn't feel like a compromise when I find something that's safer, feels better on my skin, works just as well, and smells even better than what I used to use.

Elon Musk just revealed more video games coming to Tesla cars — here's the full list so far (TSLA)

Elon Musk at E3 2019

  • Tesla CEO Elon Musk is a big fan of video games, as he's repeatedly discussed.
  • Tesla's cars have Easter Egg homages to games, and you can already play a few classic Atari games directly on the car's main screen. A newer game, "Cuphead," is headed to Tesla's in the future.
  • Musk, alongside Bethesda Game Studios director Todd Howard, announced yet another game on Thursday as officially coming to Tesla cars: "Fallout Shelter."
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Forget about Nintendo and PlayStation— the hottest new video game console is a Tesla.

Elon Musk's proclivity for the nerdier things in life is notorious, and video games are no exception. When he's not busy building and launching rockets with SpaceX, or creating industry-disrupting car companies, Musk is apparently brokering deals to put video games into Teslas.

Musk took to a stage in Los Angeles on Thursday, alongside celebrated video game designer Todd Howard of Bethesda Game Studios, to announce a new game for Tesla cars: "Fallout Shelter."

That brings the total list of games in Tesla cars (starting price: $36,000) up to at least nine, ranging from old Atari classics to newer titles with more modern graphics. The games use the steering wheel as a controller, so these are designed for the person in the driver's seat. But don't be alarmed, the car needs to be in Park for the games to work.

Here's the full list of games now available in a Tesla car:

An old NASA study gave spiders drugs to see how it affected their webs, and it'll make you want to never drink coffee again

  • A NASA study from 1995 shows just how toxic caffeine is to the brain.
  • Researchers exposed spiders to a range of different chemicals — including caffeine, marijuana, and Benzedrine — and noted how differently they spin webs under the influence of each.

The scientific benefits — and disadvantages — of coffee are well-researched. But how much do we know about how the brain functions under the influence of caffeine?

A NASA study from 1995 looked into the effect of various chemicals on spiders gives us a glimpse into how the brain is affected by caffeine — and published a terrifying graphic showing how toxic caffeine is to the brain.

The researchers exposed spiders to a range of different chemicals, including caffeine, marijuana, and Benzedrine — a type of amphetamine — and noted how they spun their webs under the influence of each of those substances.

Spiders typically spin webs by producing silk from their silk glands with the help of their spinnerets, which are special organs that allow them to decide what type of thread they need at various points.

The NASA researchers found that the more deformed the web looks compared to a normal web, the more toxic the chemical is.

Take a look at the full graphic here, and compare for yourself:

nasa coffee spider web study

"It appears that one of the most telling measures of toxicity is a decrease, in comparison with a normal web, of the numbers of completed sides in the cells: the greater the toxicity, the more sides the spider fails to complete," the study said.

That's not to say that caffeine is necessarily bad for our brains, though.

Earlier this month scientists found that drinking at least two cups of coffee a day could decrease the risk of death from cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes.

As partner and head of consumer practice at True Talent Advisory, a leading executive recruiting firm for the world's fastest growing startups, Todd Zangrillo has spent his 16-year recruitment career personally making matches between top candidates and jobs at the biggest tech companies, including Jet, HelloFresh, Casper, SoulCycle, Chewy.com and Glossier. True Talent has also placed talent at Spotify, Lyft, Jet WeWork, Box, and Square.

To make these placements a success, Zangrillo says his approach includes being laser-focused on building dynamic relationships with entrepreneurs and investors to build top leadership teams.

"We develop a rapport with our clients who are founders of these tech companies," Zangrillo told Business Insider. "That's a key part of how we find them the best people for these positions."

Zangrillo, who served as the human resources business partner with eBay's ecommerce technology organization before joining True, has led over 300 searches. Here he shares insider tips on what tech companies are looking for when they're filling positions, from entry level to executive.

Todd Zangrillo

Headhunters will assess your skill set and fit

When placing tech professionals, Zangrillo follows a precise formula that integrates two kinds of fit.

"In today's market, companies are looking for people who are humble and confident and have about 70 percent of the required job skill sets," he says. "There's no room for error and, if you don't have that 70-percent requisite skills, you won't get the attention of our client."

These skill sets could include things like domain expertise, leadership ability, vision and strategy, operational excellence, and consumer-driven digital experience.

What Zangrillo sees as the remaining 30 percent is just as important.

"That's the number we attach to personality and culture fit," he says. "While CEOs want to see you bringing certain quantifiable skills to the company, you won't make it to the second level unless there's a strong chemistry fit."

Conveying passion is more important than ever

These days, since it's more common than ever for people to bond around missions, causes, and passions, you should convey that passion during the entire hiring process, Zangrillo says.

"In any position I fill, I need to see an aligned passion for the business, the business model, the brand, or the category," he says. "This makes a big difference to the company's hiring managers. This gets them excited about you as a candidate and turns this into a successful hire."

Make sure your resume speaks on your behalf

Zangrillo encourages job seekers angling for competitive jobs in the tech sector to treat their resumes as living, breathing documents conveying more than just the facts.

"Hiring managers are looking for people who stand out and one way to show this is in your resume," he says. "It's more than just that you went to the best school. You should show that you're a juggler, a leader, and have a knack for humanity."

Just like a product in any other market, you want your resume to be clearly differentiated.

"When you share specific ways you took leadership roles or did something outside the box, you'll connect to a potential hiring manager in a unique way, beyond which companies you worked for and when," Zangrillo says.

Resumes are also a great conversation-starter, especially if a hiring manager has a similar trajectory, he adds. Organizational psychology research finds that hiring managers want to hire people that remind them of themselves.

Show that you've gone the extra mile

No matter how much job experience you've had, you're going to be more of a standout candidate for a tech job if you've done everything you can to gain every experience you can that's related to the position.

"Executives at Google and Facebook want to hire people with specific pedigrees that are based around your accomplishments," Zangrillo says. "If you're eager to show your entrepreneurial bent, during interviews with me, share what you did during your internships. If you created a product, explain it clearly and tell me what makes you passionate about it."

Engage with the company

It's easier than ever to access information about any tech company you're applying to, but you want to be strategic.

"While a Facebook hiring manager isn't going to decide whether or not to hire you depending on how many (social media) followers you have, he or she will want to know that you're passionate about the product and category and that you've studied the technology the company has built its products on," he says.

"You should know the business model of Facebook inside and out and understand the user experience. If you don't do that, it won't matter that you have 50,000 followers, you will still be less attractive as a candidate."

Avoid these missteps

If you want a job at a top tech company, the worst thing you can do is be arrogant, aggressive, and unprepared, Zangrillo says.

"A combination of these three things can flat-line candidates," he says. "It's the fastest way I've seen a candidate eliminated."

Instead, consider that there's an art to presenting yourself in the best way to these companies.

"When you have hot jobs and great people going for them, you have to be sure you don't alienate anyone," he says.

In the end, the best candidates are "extraordinarily truthful," Zangrillo says. "When a job placement comes down to two candidates where one is truthful and the other one is exaggerating, the gut feeling of the hiring manager is that, in the end, the people who are more authentic win."

NOW WATCH: A Silicon Valley founder shares the 6 traits she looks for in the entrepreneurs she invests in

A cult-favorite clothing company that narrowly escaped bankruptcy could reach over $10 million in sales this year

RP women's tee

  • Richer Poorer, cult-favorite women's and men's basics brand, was once a successful sock and underwear wholesaler.
  • The brand wanted to build out collections and scale its direct-to-consumer operations, and was acquired in 2015 for $12 million by digital sales company Shoes.com.
  • Richer Poorer's founders Iva Pawling and Tim Morse found out the new owners were going bankrupt in December of 2016, and bought the company back for $8 million.
  • The company narrowly escaped bankruptcy, and is now bigger and better than ever.
  • If you ask us, Richer Poorer's best items are their T-shirts, which are made from a supremely soft and comfortable silicone-washed organic cotton.

California brand Richer Poorer is known among its fan base for creating amazingly comfortable basics and loungewear. Its T-shirts are lusciously soft, sweats as cozy as can be, and bralettes as unrestrictive as possible — they sell out more often than not.

But there was a time when the brand almost lost everything.

The company, which was founded in 2010 by Iva Pawling and Tim Morse and invested in by the likes of Patrick Carney from the Black Keys, originally began selling comfortable, cleverly designed socks and underwear to upscale department store retailers like Bloomingdales. After a few years, the business found success as a wholesaler, but the company was interested in scaling to focus more on their direct-to-consumer efforts.

To begin that process, they knew they'd need to raise $2 million capital — but they also knew it was unlikely they'd get anywhere with investment banks that often go for larger projects. So when online retailer Shoes.com offered to buy the company for $12 million total, keeping Pawling and Morse on to manage, they agreed to the acquisition.

Promising to help them with operations, digital strategy, and website development, Shoes.com seemed like a great fit. They'd have access to resources like never before, and be able to focus on what mattered for the future of their business.

That was the hope — until they found out their new owner would be declaring bankruptcy, potentially bringing Richer Poorer down with them in the fire.

Pawling and Morse used the strong relationships they had built with two board members and bought the company back with them for $8 million just one month before Shoes.com officially went under (they have since re-emerged with decent success).

SS18_Mens_05_preview

After narrowly escaping a certain demise, Richer Poorer managed to rebuild themselves into a cult-favorite basics brand in a strange riches-to-rags-back-to-riches story of resilience.

They are now expecting over $10 million in sales this year alone, and are building out a strong presence in the direct-to-consumer market. Lately, they've launched some fun collaborations that pay homage to their roots as a (mostly) sock brand, like a selection of colorful pairs designed by popular graphic artist Will Bryant.

If you ask us, Richer Poorer's best items are their T-shirts, which are made from a supremely soft and comfortable silicone-washed organic cotton. They have a cropped style for women for $34 that's cut at the perfect length, and plenty of classic men's versions, too — all ranging from $34-$38.

Interestingly, the brand's laid-back vibe reflects nothing about the company's history. Through tumult and turmoil, they were able to build up a successful identity that represents the most aspirational version of "California cool" that we've seen since the era of Vans' skate shoes — and we've come to love them as much for their story as for their great clothing.

A filmmaker who's traveled to more than 70 dead malls across America reveals the craziest things he's seen, from an eerily foggy food court to a rainstorm indoors

rolling acres mall

  • The producer and filmmaker Dan Bell has visited more than 70 dead malls across America, uploading video tours to his YouTube channel.
  • He said he's seen some crazy things over the years, from malls on the verge of demolition to others with roofs so leaky that rainstorms came inside.
  • "These malls are just ending up completely empty and just shells of their former selves," he told Business Insider.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Dan Bell stood outside the now demolished Rolling Acres Mall in Akron, Ohio, in 2015.

At the time, the infamous mall was abandoned but still standing.

"I asked some kid on a dirt bike, I was like, 'Is there any way to get in here?'" Bell told Business Insider.

"And this kid pointed out this hole that I could crawl through and get into the mall," he added.

Once inside, he heard the unexpected, disconcerting sound of a group of frogs singing.

"They were actually living in the pool underneath the elevator, the center court elevator. The water had pooled up in the well of the elevator, and there were frogs living in the pool," he said. "And ... there was a bank of fog in the food court just hanging mid-air."

"And I said, 'This is absolutely incredible.'"

A producer and filmmaker with more than 482,000 subscribers to his YouTube channel, Bell has documented his visits to more than 70 dead malls across America. He uses what he calls "spy glasses" — sunglasses with a built-in hidden camera — to film most of the videos in order to avoid the attention of mall security guards who don't have too many open stores to watch over.

Bell defines a dead mall as one that is at least 50% vacant. Some have already been shuttered and abandoned, while others simply lack shoppers of any kind.

As consumer habits have changed to favor online shopping, and foot traffic to stores has declined, the sight of a depressed mall has become all too common in communities across America. More than 7,000 stores are slated to close across the country so far in 2019. Many of those stores are mall-based.

While many of the dead malls Bell visits for his video series still sport charming '70s-era decor with neon colors and terracotta walls, others are in a more dilapidated condition.

During Bell's visit to Rolling Acres, for example, he noted graffiti on the walls and broken glass everywhere. That visit ended with a police escort.

At another mall in North Carolina, the air-conditioning system was broken. One of the stores that was still operating, however, didn't seem to be too affected by the heat because of a clever workaround.

"[The shopkeeper's] husband had brought her a block of ice and she had a fan blowing on it," Bell said.

He said he's seen other malls with dramatically leaky roofs.

"I've been to malls where there's been a thunderstorm, and it's raining inside of the mall, and there's some poor maintenance man running around with buckets trying to absorb the water from puddling up on all the floors," he said.

But Bell's favorite mall is Sunrise Mall in Corpus Christi, Texas, where the 1985 movie "The Legend of Billie Jean" was filmed. During his visit, he was amazed by how similar it looked to its appearance in the movie that had premiered roughly 30 years before.

"I love the malls that are older, that haven't been given that generic makeover that all these malls that are doing well now have done," he said.

sunrise mall corpus christi

Bell's videos conjure a strong sense of nostalgia, and that's no coincidence — he describes himself as a '90s kid. Back then, young people would use their local mall as the primary place to hang out with their friends.

"It was like Facebook, only you weren't on the computer. You'd go and run into this person, run into that person," he said.

And, in all of his visits, the stories have been much the same.

"You read the comments, and it's the same comments on each video because it's people in that state who went to that mall, who met their future husband or wife there, who haven't been to the mall in years, who had no idea it was even still open. The video is sort of like the funeral, almost, of the mall," he said.

"It's spreading across America, and these malls are just ending up completely empty and just shells of their former selves," he added.

the best pool floats you can buy

  • Ah, summer and the living is easy. And what better way to celebrate those bright and balmy days than lazily drifting in your swimming pool or on the lake, drink in hand and sunscreen slathered on your nose?
  • With the Kelsyus Chaise Lounger, you'll be weightless on the water without a care in the world.

Sure, you can enjoy the water on a ho-hum rectangular raft — I spent seemingly endless hours of my childhood doing just that, back in the long-ago days before pool floats got creative — but why not up your summer game?

Today, there's a whole wide world of pool floats out there that put the "fun" in functional, and look great while doing it — or at least, give you the opportunity to take some Instagram-worthy selfies.

There are a lot of floats out there, so we've done the hard work for you, and whittled the choices down to the best ones for pool, beach, or lake.

The best pool float overall

What's not to love about an oh-so-comfortable pool lounger that keeps your favorite beverage right at hand while you soak up rays and enjoy the cool water? The Kelsyus Chaise Lounger does all that and more.

The only downside you might find to the Kelsyus Chaise Lounger is having to get out of it when it's time to go home. This pampering pool lounger is long enough so you can stretch out in comfort.

The mesh seat area lets your lower body dip just far enough under the water for cooling refreshment, while the sturdy frame and outer edge keep you supported and help prevent accidental flip-overs. There's even an inner spring that runs around the outer edge for extra durability and stability.

The integrated headrest, backrest, and footrest prompt an "Ahhh" of contentment as you lounge, and the built-in cup holder means your favorite beverage is never far away as you float and contemplate how great life is.

TripSavvy chose this float as its top pick, praising its special features, including side clips for tethering the float to a dock, boat, or another lounger; and the way the float folds up into an easy-to-carry disc complete with a shoulder strap when it's time to head for home.

Pros: Big enough to comfortably support most people up to 250 pounds, folds up and includes a carry bag for easy transport, fairly easy to inflate by mouth or with a pump, sturdy construction

Cons: A few owners complained their float developed a leak or hole within the first few uses, some said it was hard to inflate the float

The best for Instagram-worthy selfies

Whichever way you float, the GoFloats Unicorn Party Tube adds some summer magic to your poolside, lakeside, or beach style.

With rainbows and gold aplenty, The GoFloats Unicorn Party Tube is just the thing to keep you above not only the water line, but also the rest of the selfie crowd. It's plenty big, so you'll have room to sprawl comfortably on top, sit and look pretty, or even hang onto the side along with a buddy.

This unicorn-inspired pool float is another favorite of TripSavvy, which called it, "The ideal purchase for fun-loving teens and adults who want to stand out at their next pool party." The float's extra-thick raft-grade vinyl is even UV-treated to keep the colors from fading, so your unicorn will look just as good at the end of the summer as it did in the beginning.

The unicorn float is 45 inches wide and rated for up to 500 pounds. The rapid-inflate valve means it'll be blown up and ready for the pool in a hurry. Go ahead and inflate it with lung power, or make it easy on yourself and use a manual or electric pump, or your blow dryer.

Pros: Heavy-duty construction, fairly easy to inflate, big enough to make an impact without being so large you won't fit in the pool

Cons: As with every pool float, a few buyers had leaks, holes, or issues with inflation

Buy the GoFloats Unicorn Party Tube on Amazon for $16.59

The best for all eyes on you

You won't lack for attention when you're drifting around the pool, lake, or beach on the Golden Dragon Pool Float.

Summer is for fun, and nowhere is that more in evidence than at the pool or natural body of water on the hottest summer scorchers. So why not take advantage of the good mood, playful spirit, and "I'm showing some skin" attitude inspired by the weather, and go all-out with a pool float that makes not only a literal but also a huge metaphorical splash? That's exactly what you'll get when you show up with the Golden Dragon Pool Float.

This baby is big: Over 100 inches across, so there's enough room for you and your BFF to float comfortably. Despite that, it's not too hard to inflate using a pump or blow dryer. Two "handles" in the dragon's neck make it easy to hold on even if your admirers start rocking the raft.

Pros: Very fun design, reasonably sturdy construction, quick-inflate valve

Cons: Very large, so might be too big for a small backyard or community pool

Buy the Golden Dragon Pool Float on Amazon for $49.99

The best chair pool float

If you prefer to let your legs dangle in the water while your upper body relaxes, you'll love the comfortable support of the SwimWays Sun Seat Pool Chair.

Sometimes you don't want to be entirely reclined in the pool. Maybe you're chatting with friends, reading, or involved in a game of beach ball bounce. Whatever the reason, the SwimWays Sun Seat Pool Chair is the perfect way to chill in the water while trusting that the sturdy construction and an inner-spring around the edges that will keep you afloat and prevent unwanted flip-overs — although, if your friends are determined enough, you're going into the drink.

The seat area is mesh, so your lower body will submerge just below the water line while your upper body is catching rays.

The float has a built-in cup holder, too. After all, you don't want to get out of the water to fetch your favorite beverage. The headrest and backrest are integrated into the design, and the whole float easily folds up into a flat disc for easy transport and storage.

Pros: Easy to inflate with a pump or your lung power, cup holder, folds up flat for storage

Cons: None to speak of unless you prefer a float that keeps your legs out of the water

Buy the SwimWays Sun Seat Pool Chair on Amazon for $28.44

The best ride-on pool float

You'll be fighting with the kids over who gets the first ride on the Intex Giant Gator Ride-On Pool Float.

If you — or your kids — prefer sitting atop your float, rather than reclining on a lounge or floating in the center of a ring, then you want a ride-on pool float. And while there are plenty of them out there, few match the comical appeal of the Intex Giant Gator Ride-On Pool Float.

Go ahead and imagine you're drifting through the swamps of the Everglades. This gator is friendly and pool, lake, or beach safe. He's really big, as well. At 80 inches long, you can pile onto the float with a friend, or let two or three young kids enjoy the ride. There are two sets of handles on the beast's back so you can hold on tight while you drift.

TripSavvy liked this float as well, and praised the sturdy, two-chamber construction, along with the UV-resistant vinyl that won't fade or easily rip.

Surprisingly, quite a few Amazon buyers commented that they purchased the gator, not as a toy, but to deter ducks from landing in their backyard pool; if that's an issue for you, this just might be your solution.

Pros: Big enough for two or three kids, sturdy construction, very fun design

Cons: Too large to inflate with lung power alone, so you'll need a manual or electric pump

Buy the Intex Giant Gator Ride-On Pool Float on Amazon for $17.93

The best for couples

You can lounge atop the water with your sweetie on the Intex Canopy Island Inflatable Lounge

The Intex Canopy Island Inflatable Lounge is well balanced and large enough to stay upright with multiple people on it. This oversize float measures 78 inches long and 59 inches wide. The comfortable backrest makes it perfect for sitting up if you get tired of reclining, and there are two cup holders so you won't have to get out of the pool when you get thirsty.

The canopy keeps the sun out of your eyes, but if you prefer to catch unobstructed rays, you can remove it. If you're floating on a lake or beach, and don't want to drift away, you can use the rope around the float's middle to secure it to a dock, boat, or post.

Pros: Great for dates, but also fun for family use, canopy and cup holders, sturdy construction with two inner valves to prevent blowouts

Cons: Pricey, and you'll definitely need an electric pump to inflate this oversize float

Buy the Intex Canopy Island Inflatable Lounge on Amazon for $74.69

The best for multiple people

If you want to hang out and chat with your buddies while enjoying the lake, river, or beach, you'll love the Intex Key Largo Inflatable Island Raft, which holds up to six people.

Okay, we admit it: This thing is huge, so unless you have a gigantic swimming pool, you'll be using the Intex Key Largo Inflatable Island Raft on a lake, pond, river, or beach, not in your backyard. Measuring 136 inches long, 128 inches wide, and 22 inches high, the raft has plenty of room for six average-size adults, although quite a few Amazon buyers claimed they'd squeezed even more than that aboard.

Enjoy the section of the raft with a comfortable backrest, or stretch out on the "deck." There's a docking platform with four grab handles to make it easier to get on and off the raft, but you'll mostly want to stay put — this isn't a diving raft. There's a built-in cooler and six cup holders, so the party doesn't have to stop just because someone gets thirsty. The open center has a mesh bottom, so you can cool your feet in the water.

Unless you plan on drifting downstream, you'll want to use the side loops to anchor the raft to a nearby dock, boat, or post. Because this is so large, it does take quite a bit of time to inflate, and it's far too large and heavy for one person to carry alone, so you'll need your friends' assistance in getting it down to the water. But once afloat, this is where summer memories will be made.

Pros: Fantastic fun for multiple people, built-in cooler and cup holders, very sturdy construction

Cons: You'll need a powerful electric pump to inflate the raft, not easy to transport or store

Buy the Intex Key Largo Inflatable Island Raft on Jet for $104.99

The best for kids

If your child isn't too comfortable in the water yet, the Fish Pool Ring will provide extra security and let him join in on all the fun without the worry.

For kids three and up who aren't strong swimmers, or just want to enjoy floating in the pool while relaxing, the Fish Pool Ring will be their best summer friend. This pool ring is cute enough to appeal to the kindergarten crowd, but not so babyish that it will embarrass your seven-or-eight-year-old child.

It's actually large enough for an average-size adult, so go ahead and give it a try yourself, if you'd like.

The vinyl is reasonably durable, and it's quick and easy to inflate the ring with lung power or a manual or electric pump. The bright color makes it easy to quickly spot your child in the community pool as an additional bonus.

If your child doesn't like the fish, there are also swan and unicorn. Amazon previously carried a version of a cute fox, but that's not currently available.

Pros: Cute and appealing for young kids

Cons: None to speak of

Buy the Fish Pool Ring on Amazon for $18.99

The best for babies

Why should your littlest one have to miss out on summer fun? With the SwimWays Baby Spring Float, even toddlers can enjoy the pool.

Designed for young'uns between nine and 24 months and weighing less than 35 pounds, the SwimWays Baby Spring Float is a gentle way to get your baby used to the water while feeling safe and secure.

Baby's legs extend through the mesh "seat" so she can kick in the water to her heart's content while the spring-edged platform keeps the float stable and secure — no fear of this tipping over, although, of course, you'll be right there the entire time.

The canopy helps keep the sun off your child's delicate skin but isn't large enough to entirely cover him, so you'll probably still want him to wear a sun hat, along with plenty of sunscreen.

Pros: Great way to introduce babies to the water

Cons: A few buyers complained the ring quickly sprung leaks, children will outgrow the ring fairly quickly

Buy the SwimWays Baby Spring Float on Amazon for $25.79-$29.99

The best for dogs

The SwimWays Paddle Paws Dog Float is puncture-resistant so Fido's toenails won't cause leaks or tears.

Why should humans get all of the fun? Plenty of dogs enjoy the pool, too, and now your water-loving canine can kick back and relax with the rest of the family as you all float in the cool water. Lounging on the SwimWays Paddle Paws Dog Float, Fido is the picture of summer relaxation, and best of all, his toenails won't rip through the durable, dog-friendly fabric, as they would through most other inexpensive pool floats.

The float has a mesh center that comfortably supports your dog's body while still allowing him to enjoy the feel of the water, while a spring-filled outer ring provides stability and support so your pooch won't be startled by a sudden flip of the float.

When Fido is done with the pool for the day, the whole float easily folds up into a flat disc for easy storage.

Pros: Great fun for dogs and the families who love them

Cons: A few owners complained that the metal spring bent in too easily, making the float less stable

Buy the large SwimWays Paddle Paws Dog Float on Amazon for $47.89

iPhone camera

If you have an iPhone— particularly any recent model of the phone— you also have a professional-quality camera that can catch great pics wherever you are.

But storage for photos is limited on any device (unless you put everything in the cloud), so you may need to offload those great pics from time to time.

Here's how to transfer photos from your iPhone to your computer.

How to transfer photos from an iPhone to a Mac

Macbook Pro charging iPhone usb c

To prepare for your photo upload, make sure your software is up to date. Currently, you'll need the most recent version of iTunes (or at least version 12.5.1 or beyond). You'll also need a USB cord to connect your iPhone to your Mac.

Note that for Mac users, Apple is phasing out iTunes with its next Mac software update in the fall, so the below process will take place through the Photos app directly, without iTunes as a mediator.

1. Connect your iPhone to your Mac via USB (or a USB-C cord for newer models of the MacBook).

2. Check your phone. You may be prompted to unlock it with its passcode (your iPhone won't accept touch ID for this verification).

3. If a screen appears on your iPhone, choose "Trust This Computer." Your iPhone is now connected to your Mac computer.

4. The Photos app on your computer should pop open. If not, open it manually.

5. You should see an import screen in Photos that shows the photos you have on your iPhone. If you aren't automatically placed in this screen, click on the icon for your iPhone in the menu on the left of the Photos window. Or go to File – Import to open the import window.

6. Choose where you want to store your imported photos. At the top of the import window in the center, you'll find a drop-down menu that lets you add the new photos to one of your albums or create a new album for your import. If you do nothing, the transferred photos will go into your Photos app Library. Your photos will also automatically appear in the Import or Last Import album (the name of this album depends on whether you have High Sierra or an earlier macOS).

7. There are two buttons on the upper left of the import window. "Import All New Items" will transfer every photo you have taken since your last import. To upload only certain photos, click on each photo you want to copy onto your computer and click the "Import Selected" button.

8. Your import is complete! Go to iTunes and click the eject icon before you disconnect your iPhone.

You can also follow the steps above to import from your iPad, iPod Touch, or your camera's SD card.

Before you upload photos onto a PC, you'll also need at least version 12.5.1 of iTunes on your computer. Follow the instructions above to connect your iPhone, unlock it, and tell it to trust your computer.

After you are connected, the steps you'll need to follow depend on which version of Windows you have on your PC. Here are the steps for Windows 10.

1. Click the Start button.

2. Choose Photos from the menu that pops up. This opens the Photos app on your PC.

3. In Photos, choose Import – From a USB device. Follow the instructions to complete your photo transfer.

4. You'll have the option to choose where you want to put your imported photos. You can also select which photos to import.

How to turn off iMessage on a Mac, or turn off its notifications when you're trying to avoid distractions

0
0

Macbook and iPhone

For the most part, the iMessage feature on your Mac can be super convenient, allowing you to stay connected to your texts even when you're away from your phone. Plus, you can sync your texts across all of your Apple devices through iCloud, and never miss a message.

However, if you're like me, the constant ping of message notifications can be distracting when you're trying to get work done. Thankfully, it's simple enough to either turn off your iMessage on your Mac, or at least silence its push notifications.

Here's how to do each.

How to turn off iMessage on a Mac

1. Open the "Messages" app on your Mac. You may have it in your dock at the bottom or side of your desktop. If it's not there, you can find it in the "Applications" folder in "Finder."

2. On the upper menu bar, click "Messages" and select "Preferences."

3

3. Open the "Accounts" tab.

4. On the left side of the window you will see a list of your enabled accounts. Select the one you want to disable (it will say iMessage underneath it).

5. Untick the box next to "Enable this account."

6. Click the "Sign Out" button.

5

You will now be signed out of your iMessage account and will not be able to send or receive any messages on your Mac.

How to turn off iMessage notifications on a Mac

The process above will totally disable the Messages app. However, if you still want to use the app but not be distracted by notifications, you can turn them off by following the simple steps below:

1. Open the Apple menu by clicking the Apple logo in the top left corner.

2. Select "System Preferences" from the drop-down menu.

6

3. Click the "Notifications" icon.

4. In the menu on the left side left side, you will see a list of apps. Select "Messages."

5. Under "Message alert style," click "None."

8

This will turn off the notifications, allowing you to continue to send and receive iMessages from your Mac, but also complete your assignment in peace!

Hong Kong skyline

  • New York City and London are the top two most influential cities in the world, according to management consultancy firm A. T. Kearny's annual Global Cities Index Results.
  • The 21 cities below were ranked based off of areas including business activity, culture, human capital, political engagement, and information exchange.
  • The scores from each category were added together to create the ranking.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Not all major cities are created equal, with some places around the world holding more influence over global business, culture, and politics than others. But what are the world's most influential cities?

That's a question that management consultancy firm A.T. Kearney tries to answer with its annual Global Cities Report. The report looks at which global cities "are improving in their competitiveness and what factors are driving that success."

It examines dozens of variables, which are then subdivided into categories: business activity, culture, human capital, political engagement, and information exchange. Scores in these categories are then added together to create a ranking.

New York and London top the list, with both cities miles ahead of their nearest rivals. The top 21 are spread around the world, though Europe dominates the list. Notably, the top five cities on the list have maintained their exact rankings from 2018.

Check out the world's most influential cities below.

Bernie Sanders slams ‘polite f-u’ letters sent by generic drug companies as 'clearly illegal' and calls for an investigation

0

Sanders Cummings

  • Business Insider reported exclusively last week that generic drug companies' lawyers allegedly coordinated to send "'polite f-u' letters" in response to lawmakers' inquiries about the spiking prices of their products.
  • Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Representative Elijah Cummings of Maryland just sent the Justice Department a letter urging action against generic drug manufacturers.
  • "In my view, their 'polite f-u' letters designed to obstruct our investigation were clearly illegal," Sanders said in a statement.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Years ago, when the prices of generic drugs like an antibiotic and an asthma medication jumped more than more than 8,000% and 4,000%, respectively, Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Representative Elijah Cummings of Maryland began investigating

They sent letters in fall of 2014 to 14 generic drugmakers, asking about the spiking prices.

But among the generic drugmakers, "the consensus at this point is that the responses will be 'polite f-u' letters," a lawyer for one allegedly reported in an email,

That's according to an unredacted antitrust complaint being brought by 44 states against generic drugmakers like Mylan, Teva and others that Business Insider reported on exclusively last week.

unredacted complaint 'polite f-u' letters

You can read the full story here, and see the unredacted complaint here

Sanders and Cummings just wrote to the Justice Department following up about the lawsuit and urging action against generic drug companies.

"In my view, their 'polite f-u' letters designed to obstruct our investigation were clearly illegal," Sanders said in a statement. "The Department of Justice must hold these bad actors accountable to the fullest extent of the law."

Generic drugmakers allegedly worked together to hike prices

The new letter from Sanders and Cummings refers back to allegations that drugmakers including Teva, the world's largest generic drugmaker, worked together to hike the prices of many of their drugs. Teva didn't immediately respond to a request for comment on the lawmakers' letter.

This claim has been the focus of lawsuits from state attorneys general and an ongoing criminal investigation by the Department of Justice.

These have all brought new scrutiny to generic drugs, which are inexpensive versions of brand name medicines that become available once their patents have expired.

Generics make up the vast majority of prescriptions dispensed in the US, and have been touted as a free-market solution to the US's high healthcare costs. But the lawsuits allege that drugmakers worked together to bring prices up, instead, hurting patients and taxpayers.

The Justice Department brought charges against two generic drug executives in late 2016, alleging that they had fixed drug prices and manipulated the market for the drugs, but "has not announced any charges against additional generic manufacturers or executives" since, the lawmakers said in the Thursday letter.

That drug company, Heritage, did admit to price fixing for a diabetes medication and agreed to pay a $225,000 criminal penalty and an additional $7 million in a separate civil resolution, the Department of Justice announced late last month.

But the $225,000 penalty is "wholly insufficient to deter future criminal conduct by Heritage or other generic manufacturers," Sanders and Cummings said in the new letter.

Pointing to the 44-state lawsuit that was recently filed against the generic drugmakers (and is separate from the Department of Justice investigation), the lawmakers urged the Justice Department to investigate and take enforcement actions, if justified.

They also pointed to evidence in the lawsuit suggesting that drugmakers misled the Congressional inquiry, and asked for an investigation into whether Teva and others had violated the law by doing so.

Sanders and Cummings also asked for a briefing by next Friday about any actions the department is taking.

"In response to our document and information requests, these companies gave excuses for raising prices — such as the costs of regulatory compliance, drug shortages, and user fees — that were at best, grossly misleading, and at worst, false statements to Congress," they said.

This under-$100 bed frame is one of my best Amazon purchases to date — it's sturdy, has tons of storage space, and took 20 minutes to set up

zinus shawn bed frame

  • I thought I loved the Zinus bed frame I bought when I first moved into my apartment but it turns out there's an even more affordable and higher-rated bed frame from the brand that's equally easy to set up.
  • All sizes of the Zinus Shawn 14-Inch SmartBase Bed Frame cost under $100. The total set-up process is six steps, doesn't require additional tools, and takes less than 15 minutes to complete.
  • Despite this easy set-up process and its simple design, the frame is strong and not creaky at all. It also provides enough space underneath for storage.

Earlier this year, I took a deep breath and decided it was finally time to upgrade to a larger mattress (specifically this new Tuft & Needle one). I didn't mind that I would have more space to sleep and splay out on. Mostly, I dreaded the replacement process — rearranging the entire contents of my room to make space, chasing dust bunnies and vacuuming, and setting up the new mattress and frame.

I emerged that day disgustingly sweaty with some lower back pain, but overall the whole ordeal wasn't as terrible as I originally expected. Thanks to an efficient and powerful Dyson vacuum and an easy-to-set-up bed frame called the Zinus Shawn, I was able to transform my room in a few hours.

Finding the right bed frame

Knowing myself and my disgust for spending more than 15 minutes on furniture set-up, I deferred to Zinus, a brand that makes inexpensive, sturdy, and simple furniture. I loved the first bed frame I got from Zinus, which was incredibly easy to put together and held up well during its two years of use. Why risk being disappointed by another brand?

I bought another Zinus frame.

This time, the Zinus Shawn 14-Inch SmartBase Bed Frame caught my eye. It has a 4.5-star Amazon rating from more than 26,000 reviews and it fit my criteria: minimal set-up required, enough clearance underneath to store my boxes and suitcases, and affordable. Starting at $61.85 for the twin size and going up to $95.75 for the California king size, it's even cheaper than the first frame I bought.

Unpacking and setting up the Zinus Shawn bed frame

The frame arrives in a slim box and comprises two sections. In total, there are less than 20 pieces to the whole frame, including these two sections. The one-sided instruction sheet contains clear and simple illustrations to show you the set-up process from start to finish. You won't need any tools other than the included components and your hands.

zinus shawn bed frame 3

Flip the two pieces upside down, then connect the support bars on each end of the frame to force the legs vertical.

zinus shawn bed frame 4

The two pieces connect via these screw components above.

zinus shawn bed frame 2

Attach the non-slip tape on the center of the frame, and you're done!

As you can see, the set-up process couldn't be easier. I dusted my hands off and thought, "Really? That was it?"

Sleeping on the Zinus Shawn bed frame

I've been sleeping on this frame for 2.5 months with zero problems or complaints. It's surprisingly sturdy given its simple design and set-up process, supporting a 66-pound mattress plus two people with no squeaking or any indication that it's struggling. The steel frame is clearly very strong, but what's most impressive is that Zinus was able to combine strength with a hassle-free, noise-free design.

The total height of the frame is 14 inches and it ultimately offers 13 inches of clearance, making it tall enough to store your large suitcases, clothing storage bins, and anything else you want to stash out of the way. Living in a small apartment with a job that sends me home with products to test every day, I've never appreciated hidden opportunities for increased space so much.

zinus shawn bed frame 5

The bottom line

When I tried my first Zinus frame two years ago, I was smitten. I didn't think I could appreciate the ease of set-up, strength, and affordability of a bed frame more until the Zinus Shawn frame came into my life. If you're looking for a sturdy new frame that you don't have to spend a lot of time or money on, I can't recommend the Zinus Shawn frame enough.

Should you do a video call to liaise with your coworker who's based in another city? Should you text your friend to confirm plans or just go ahead and call? Or should you get all your buddies on one video conference to make sure you're all still on the same page for the weekend outing details?

Why choose a phone call, video call, or text message when you can do all three using Google Hangouts? Google Hangouts makes it easy to connect with people via talk, text, or video, and the app allows you to create groups that can be connected again and again.

It also stores your past chats so you can pick up the text conversation any time and can refer back to past messages as convenient.

Google Hangouts can even save you money, allowing you to make phone or video calls via Wi-Fi instead of cutting into your phone plan.

Here's how to set it up and use it on your computer or mobile device.

How to set up and use Google Hangouts on a computer

1. Log into your Google account, then type: "hangouts.google.com" into the browser bar at the top of the screen.

2. Click through the intro screen until you land on your Hangouts homepage, which will have a list of any ongoing chats on the left and will offer you three options in the center of the page, "Video Call," "Phone Call," and "Message."

3. Click the option you want, then type the phone number to call, or the contact you want to video chat or message into the search bar that pops up on the top left corner of the screen (if you are reaching out to someone who is not yet a contact, type in their email address).

4. If you want to message several people at once, instead of entering the contact to text, click "New group" and then enter a series of contact names, emails, or phone numbers.

How to set up and use Google Hangouts on mobile

1. Download the Google Hangouts app and open it on your phone.

2. Allow the app to access your Google account.

3. Tap the "+" symbol in the green circle at the bottom right corner of the screen.

4. Type in contact you wish to reach, or hit "New group" and enter multiple people.

5. Start a text chat, or hit the camera icon for a video call, or the phone icon for a phone call.

And just like that, you'll be (Google) hanging out.

How to delete Facebook notifications that you don't want in your Notifications tab, on desktop or mobile

Many people use Facebook as a platform to celebrate life milestones. A new job, a new baby, a new house — whatever the event, it's often the go-to place to let your friends and family know what's going on in your life.

Unfortunately, those who comment on your posts are signing themselves up for days of notifications, as everyone you know comments as well. It's more of a disincentive to comment than anything else.

But there are ways to comment without succumbing to the onslaught of notifications. You could, for example, go into the Notifications tab in your account's settings and establish rules for when you want to receive alerts and when you don't.

But you can also delete individual notifications that you no longer want to see piled up on your Notifications tab. Here's how to do so on your Facebook account, either on desktop or via your mobile device:

How to delete notifications on Facebook on desktop

Almost all notifications can be deleted, except for automated ones like new login alerts. For all of the other ones, here's how to get it done:

1. Go to your Facebook account.

2. In the upper right corner, click the notifications symbol (the bell).

3. Find the notification you want to delete and tap the three dots in the right corner of that notification.

4. Select "Remove this notification."

You may see other options, depending on the kind of notification. For example, on public groups, you may have the option only to receive notifications from friends.

The process is generally the same as it is on the desktop version, with only a couple small differences:

1. Open your Facebook app.

2. Toggle over to your notifications, located on the right side of the top toolbar (it looks like a bell).

3. Next to the notification you want to delete, tap the three dots.

4. Tap "Remove this notification."

The Trump administration has admitted the lowest number of refugees the US has accepted in decades. Here's what people go through to make it to the US.

Millions of people around the world have been forced from their home countries due to war, genocide, or persecution.

They come from conflict-ridden countries like Syria, Somalia, and Sudan, and they wait for years in refugee camps before they can secure a spot in safe countries.

The United States takes in just a tiny fraction of the world's refugees, but it maintains one of the strictest, most rigorous vetting process — and the rules have gotten much stricter in recent years.

The Trump administration slashed the "cap" on the number of refugees accepted into the US to the lowest since the refugee program was created in 1980. The administration previously took in just 22,491 refugees in the entire 2018 fiscal year.

Here's a look at where the world's refugees come from and what they endure to make it to safety in the United States.

The UNHCR estimates that some 68.5 million people around the world have been forced from their homes.

Some of them are refugees within their own countries, some have managed to flee their home countries altogether, and some have no citizenship — and therefore nowhere to go.

As of 2016, the most recent year with data available, just 0.8% of the world's refugees were resettled in safe countries, according to the UNHCR. For 0.4% of refugees, that safe country was the United States.

When refugees flee their home countries, they often have to temporarily seek safety in a "host country," where they typically live in refugee camps until they can permanently be resettled.

Many of Syria's 5.5 million refugees, for example, sought temporary safety in neighboring countries such as Turkey, Lebanon, and Jordan.

The United States is one of 37 countries that offer resettlement programs, though refugees don’t get to pick where they’re sent. Instead, the UNHCR assigns them to the US. Then, they undergo a rigorous, years-long screening process by US officials. Here's how that works:

President Donald Trump has dramatically restricted America's refugee intake since he took office. Though he has demanded that "extreme vetting" be implemented for refugees coming from majority-Muslim countries, those closest to the refugee-vetting process say the current system is already as extreme as it gets.

The refugees undergo years of screening filled with intensive interviews, detailed background checks from multiple government agencies, biometric data collection, medical tests, and constant scrutiny from the US officials who vet them.

Trump has reduced both the number of refugees the US can admit annually — known as the "cap" or "ceiling" — and the number it actually ends up admitting.

In the last 20 or so years, presidents have generally kept the cap in the 70,000-range.

Though former President Barack Obama raised the 2017 refugee citing to 110,000 admissions, Trump took office mid-way through the fiscal year, and barely allowed half that in the country.

The Trump administration reduced the cap to 45,000 for the 2018 fiscal year but took in fewer than half, according to State Department data.

As of September 30, the end of the fiscal year, the government resettled just 22,491 refugees.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced last month that the administration is slashing that cap even further for the 2019 fiscal year, and will accept a maximum of 30,000 refugees.

In a speech announcing the new cap, Pompeo said the reduction was because the administration is dealing with a backlog of hundreds of thousands of asylum-seekers whose immigration cases are still pending. But asylum-seekers are an entirely different category of immigrants and have no bearing on the refugee program.

"The improved refugee policy of this administration serves the national interest of the United States and expands our ability to help those in need all around the world," Pompeo said. "We will continue to assist the world's most vulnerable while never losing sight of our first duty, serving the American people."

The historic drop-off in refugee admissions is particularly noticeable from 2017 data.

Throughout the 2017 fiscal year — which started in October 2016 — refugee resettlement in the US plummeted once Trump took office on January 20, 2017. In August of that year, the Trump administration only resettled 913 refugees.

Resettlement organizations in the US have expressed dismay at the Trump administration's reluctance to admit refugees — particularly when so many countries around the world are mired in crises that displace millions of citizens.

Refugee resettlement groups have warned that the reduction in admission levels would drain their resources and force the shuttering of many programs, making it even harder for the refugees who do arrive in the US to access any assistance they may need.

In the two years since Trump took office, the number of refugees accepted each month has remained low, and roughly stable. In the fiscal year 2019, usually between 1,000 and 3,000 per month have been accepted.

Under the Trump administration, refugees who are permitted to resettle in the US are mostly from African countries, according to 2018 data.

Despite the often dangerous conditions in central American countries, the US accepted only 525 refugees from Latin America in fiscal year 2018. Those who live in countries rife with gang violence, such as Honduras and El Salvador, seek safety in the US by migrating as asylum-seekers.

Instead of being processed by the UNHCR, the migrants attempt the dangerous journey northward to the US-Mexico border and strive to reach US soil, where they can claim asylum.

The Trump administration has also placed further restrictions around the asylum process, and has struggled to process and accommodate the tens of thousands of Central American migrants arriving at the US-Mexico border each month.

Refugees don't get to choose which state they'll be resettled in, either. Though they're free to move around once they arrive, they are generally placed in cities where they either have relatives, or an existing community of immigrants from their home countries.

Some states are more welcoming to refugees than others. Texas, Ohio, California, and New York are well-known for accepting refugees. States such as Hawaii and Wyoming, however, accepted zero refugees in 2018.
