The Day Glove

  • Spring's warmer weather means its time to give your closet an update.
  • I asked my coworkers to share their favorite spring fashion staples, and the new styles they're most excited to wear as the weather warms up.
  • From the most comfortable flats we've ever worn to sweaters with a cult following, these are the 20 pieces the women of Insider Picks swear by for spring.

The sun is shining, the grass is actually green, and it seems like we can finally hang up our bulky winter jackets for good. There are many exciting things about the changing of the seasons, one being the process of switching up your wardrobe.

But spring weather can be fickle. One day it's hot and humid, the next it's rainy and cold, and every once in a while it's both over the course of 12 hours, which makes it hard to know what to wear. If you're looking for some spring outfit inspiration, we've got you covered. I asked my coworkers — a team of product reviewers and discerning shoppers — to share the pieces that they actually wear all season long.

Check out 20 spring fashion staples the women of Insider Picks swear by in our own wardrobes:

A sleek leather jacket that looks almost more expensive than it is

DSTLD Women's Leather Moto Jacket, available at DSTLD, $350

This cropped leather jacket is the perfect spring coat for weird in-between weather and looks chic over literally everything. It's thick like you'd expect from a leather jacket, but somehow light enough to feel appropriate for spring and sunshine, not just fall and apple picking. The $350 price tag is also relatively affordable for such a high-quality investment piece that I'll wear for years. — Jada Wong, Insider Picks editor

In the past, I've called DSTLD's $350 leather jacket one of my closet's best-kept secrets— and each year I agree with the sentiment more. It's a pipe-dream come to life: a high-quality, stylish leather jacket that won't cost more than $400 but will potentially last you a lifetime. It's one of the best investment purchases in my wardrobe, and the leather gets more supple, soft, and custom-fit with each year. — Mara Leighton, Insider Picks reporter

A lightweight, airy white tee that goes with everything

Madewell Whisper Cotton V-Neck Pocket Tee, available at Madewell, $19.50

There really isn't anything extra special about this shirt, other than the fact that it can go with just about anything. The pocket cotton tee from Madewell has become one of my spring staples and works with flowy skirts, jeans, or any outfit that demands a light, airy look. The white shirt is the one I wear most often, but it comes in 21 colors. — Megan Foster, Insider Picks intern

A great white T-shirt is the ultimate wardrobe staple. It goes with everything — with jeans and a leather jacket, tucked into a flowy skirt, or layered under a blazer for a more formal look. I have a few plain white tees, but this one is by far my favorite. I love how it's loose-fitting, soft, and durable — I probably thrown it in the dryer more often than I should, but it's never ripped or pilled, which I find pretty impressive for such a lightweight shirt. — Remi Rosmarin, Insider Picks reporter

A pair of espadrilles that are super comfortable and breathable

Soludos Leather Platform Smoking Slipper Espadrilles, available at Soludos, $99

Shop all women's Soludos espadrilles here

I've bought the same pair of Soludos espadrilles ($99) five times. It's my hands down favorite warm-weather shoe. The espadrilles are amazingly comfortable, perfect for travel, and not too expensive. It was a risky move, but I wore my very first pair of Soludos for the very first time to JFK's Terminal 4 and didn't get a single blister in the walk-run to my flight's gate.

Soludos makes espadrilles for women ($75-$99) and men ($42-$99) in tons of fun designs to fit your personality, from lemons to tassel camels to cacti. I'm partial to the leather platforms. You can read my full review of them here. — Ellen Hoffman, Insider Picks director of content strategy

Google saves a record of your searches and other app activity. Here's how to automatically delete it.

As part of its broader effort to make privacy settings more transparent, Google recently announced a new feature that makes it possible to set limits for how long the company can save the data it collects about your activity.

Under the new settings, you can choose to have Google automatically delete your web and app activity data after a period of three or 18 months. Before this, you would have to manually delete the data in the Google app's settings section.

Google collects data like search history and other interactions in Google services to improve and customize its app experience. It might also save your Chrome history and activity from other websites and apps that use Google's services if you have that feature enabled.

But not everyone may be comfortable with Google keeping a record of their activity. And more importantly, not everyone who's bothered by the concept of Google storing their data may remember to take the time to delete it.

Here's how to make sure Google deletes your web and app activity after a set period of time, whether you're using iPhone, Android, or a web browser.

30 changes to make in your 20s to set yourself up for lifelong success

fun friends millennials

  • Your 20s define your personal and professional life more than any other decade.
  • You'll definitely make mistakes in your 20s, but that's a good thing — as long as you learn from them. But there are several ways to make the most out of your first decade of adulthood.
  • Here are 30 ideas from Quora users on how to live your best life before you turn 30.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Your 20s are, at least according to one psychologist, the "defining decade," because they play a huge role in who you'll become personally and professionally.

So don't screw them up!

We're only kidding — you'll definitely screw them up in some capacity, and that's OK.

If you can make at least some of the changes we've listed below — like practicing mindfulness and not sticking around in bad relationships — you'll be in good shape.

These ideas are drawn from multipleQuorathreads, where users of all ages shared their insights into how to make the most of your 20s.

Find out what you should start (and stop) doing in your 20s to lay the foundation for lifelong success.

1. Start writing down your goals

Toward the end of his 20s, Quora user Dirk Hooper started envisioning his ideal lifestyle five, 10, and 20 years down the road.

To ensure that he wasn't just fantasizing, he wrote down what he hoped to achieve and how he might get there.

"The act of writing your goals and dreams do[es] a couple of things for you," Hooper writes. "It forces you to nail down what's really in your mind, and it gives you a tangible record that you can refer to over time."

There's research to back up Hooper's theory. In one study, college students were instructed to write down a path toward achieving their future goals. Unsurprisingly, many of those goals involved finishing their education. Results showed that students who completed the writing exercise were more likely to stay in school than those who didn't do the exercise.

2. Start letting go of your ego

A number of Quora users mentioned some variation on the idea that you shouldn't let pride or vanity get in your way, and you should stay open to alternate viewpoints.

Michael Elijah writes: "Learn how to kill your ego. It blinds and fetters us from possibility and progress. Learn how to burst your bubble with simple questions [such] as, 'What if things aren't what they seem to be?' and vitally, 'What if I am wrong?'"

3. Start reading a lot

After college, Hooper realized there was still a lot he didn't know.

"So, I became a voracious reader," he said. "I engaged in a campaign to educate myself on any subject that inspired me. One book led to another. Over the years I've learned 10 times more than I ever learned in high school or college."

We're not advocating autodidactism over formal education, but reading is a great way to learn more about topics that aren't necessarily covered in class. Get started with this list of 30 books to read before turning 30.

7 of the best credit card offers this May — including hotel and airline bonuses ending soon

Business Insider may receive a commission from The Points Guy Affiliate Network if you apply for a credit card, but our reporting and recommendations are always independent and objective.

Best Cards of May 4x3

  • When you sign up for a new rewards credit card, you can often get a big new member bonus — tons of points or cash back.
  • Sometimes, credit card issuers will offer higher-than-normal bonuses to try and attract new customers. By taking advantage of offers when they're at their highest, you can rack up points, miles, or bonus cash quickly.
  • This May, there are a few big limited-time offers, including on the Marriott Bonvoy and United Airlines credit cards. Hurry, though — some of these aren't around for the whole month.

The fastest way to earn rewards points, cash back, and frequent-flyer miles is to open a new credit card and earn its sign-up or welcome bonus.

Credit card issuers offer huge bonuses to attract customers, while designing card features with long-term, continuing value in an effort to keep them. This offers consumers a chance to take advantage of these bonuses, perks, and features.

You can read more about earning new card-member bonuses and how that will affect your credit score here, or scroll down to find some of the best offers available this month.

Keep in mind that we're focusing on the rewards and perks that make these credit cards great options, not things like interest rates and late fees, which can far outweigh the value of any rewards.

When you're working to earn credit card rewards, it's important to practice financial discipline, like paying your balances off in full each month, making payments on time, and not spending more than you can afford to pay back. Basically, treat your credit card like a debit card.

1. Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card

Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Card

Sign-up bonus: 100,000 Marriott Bonvoy points (after spending $5,000 in the first three months). Offer ends May 16.

Originally slated to end May 2, there's been an extension on the introductory bonus for Marriott's newest rewards credit card, the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless credit card, which is issued by Chase.

The Bonvoy Boundless offer— 100,000 Marriott points if you spend $5,000 in the first three months — now ends on May 16.

Learn more: The best credit card rewards, bonuses, and benefits of 2019

Like the premium Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express® Card, the Boundless offers a free night award each year on your cardholder anniversary; the difference is that it's only good on rooms that would cost up to 35,000 points per night, rather than 50,000. Fortunately, that still includes plenty of properties.

The Boundless card comes with complimentary Silver elite status. Silver doesn't get you as much as Gold, but it's still something. You'll get a 10% bonus on points earned, priority for late checkout, access to a dedicated customer service line, free Wi-Fi, and more. While it's not a published benefit, you may also be given preferential rooms. You can get Gold status if you spend $35,000 or more in a calendar year. You'll also get 15 qualifying nights' worth of elite credit each calendar year, making it easier to earn Gold status or higher through hotel stays.

The card earns 6x points per dollar spent at Marriott hotels, and 2x points per dollar on everything else.

2. United Explorer Card

Sign-up bonus: Up to 60,000 United miles (40,000 after spending $2,000 in the first three months, and an additional 20,000 miles after spending a total of $8,000 in the first six months). Offer ends May 16.

Another one ending soon: United's mainstream co-brand card issued by Chase. Last year, United and Chase re-launched their co-branded credit card, slightly changing the name, but more importantly, tweaking the benefits and improving how the card earns points. Previously, the card earned 2x miles on every dollar spent with United Airlines and 1x dollar on everything else.

The card, which was relaunched last year, earns 2x United miles on purchases with United and at restaurants and hotels, and 1x mile on everything else.

This sign-up bonus is one of the better public offers we've seen on this card, given the spending requirement, but it's only available until May 16.

The card offers a free checked bag when you use your card to purchase your tickets, priority boarding as long as you have the open card attached to your MileagePlus account, 25% off in-flight purchases, and up to a $100 fee credit to cover your application to Global Entry or TSA PreCheck.

The United Explorer also has two benefits that are unique among US airline credit cards in the same class.

First, you'll get two complimentary one-time United Club lounge passes each year. In the lounges, you can enjoy comfortable seating, Wi-Fi, free food and drinks, and more before your flight. Normally, one-time entry to a United Club would cost $59 if you didn't have a membership.

Second, although this is an unpublished benefit, United cardholders also get access to more saver award space than other United members — that makes it easier to find good flights when it's time to use your miles. It's unclear what will happen to this benefit when United switches to dynamic award pricing in November.

The card has a $95 annual fee, which is waived the first year.

3. Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express

AmEx Blue Cash Preferred

Welcome offer: $200 statement credit (after spending $1,000 in the first three months) (increasing May 9)

If you're less excited about earning Membership Rewards points — which can be valuable, but also tricky to redeem — and want to stick with cash back, the Blue Cash Preferred is the best option, despite its $95 annual fee.

AmEx recently announced a refresh to the card on May 9. Starting then, new and existing cardholders earn 6% cash back on US streaming services and 3% back on all transit. That's in addition to the existing categories of 6% cash back at US supermarkets on up to $6,000 in purchases per year (and 1% after that), 3% back at US gas stations, and 1% cash back on everything else.

The card previously offered 3% back at some US department stores. That won't be available for anyone who applies on or after May 9. For existing cardholders, it will stick around through the end of July.

Like the EveryDay cards, the Blue Cash Preferred offers a 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for the first 12 months, before switching to a variable 15.24-26.24% APR.

The Blue Cash Preferred comes with a handful of travel and purchase protections as well. Cash back comes in the form of a statement credit, so effectively you can use it to "erase" purchases.

Click here to learn more about the Blue Cash Preferred from Business Insider's partner, The Points Guy.

4. Chase Sapphire Preferred Card

Sign-up bonus: 60,000 points (after spending $4,000 in the first three months)

The Sapphire Preferred is one of the most popular all-around rewards credit cards, and it's easy to see why. This card earns 2x points per dollar spent on just about all travel and dining purchases, and 1x point on everything else. It also comes with a ton of travel and purchase protections, such as rental car insurance, trip delay coverage, and extended warranty.

The card's sign-up bonus was recently increased for the first time since 2015— it's now 60,000 Ultimate Rewards (UR) points. That's worth, at the very least, $600 as cash back or gift cards. However, if you book travel through the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal and use points to pay, you'll get a 25% bonus, making points worth 1.25 cents each. That means that the sign-up bonus would be worth $750.

Even more lucrative — the Chase Sapphire Preferred lets you transfer your UR points to a few different frequent-flyer and hotel-loyalty programs. This comes in handy because in many cases it costs fewer points to book a trip if you go through one of those programs, as opposed to using the points as cash. You can read more about why transferring points to frequent-flyer programs gets you more value here.

This all comes for a fairly standard annual fee of $95, which is not waived the first year.

Click here to learn more about the Sapphire Preferred from Business Insider's partner, The Points Guy.

5. American Express® Gold Card

American Express Gold Card

Welcome offer: 35,000 Membership Rewards points when you spend $2,000 in the first three months.

Right now, the AmEx Gold Card is arguably the best card available for dining, unless you're only interested in cash back, rather than potentially more valuable rewards points, and unless you find yourself abroad at restaurants often — if that's the case, you should go with the Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card (scroll down to the next card).

The Gold Card earns 4x points at US restaurants and on up to $25,000 per year at US supermarkets (and 1x point after that), 3x points on flights booked directly with the airline, and 1x point on everything else. Based on the fact that you can easily redeem Membership Rewards points for more than 1¢ of value each, that makes this the highest-earning card for everything food-related.

The Gold Card offers up to a $100 airline fee credit each calendar year, and adds up to $120 of dining credits — split into $10 each month — at Grubhub, Seamless, The Cheesecake Factory, Ruth's Steak House, or participating Shake Shack locations.

While it's difficult to assign an exact value to Membership Rewards points, The Points Guy subjectively estimates each point as worth 2¢. That makes the welcome bonus worth $700. Even without factoring in the annual credit benefits, that's more than enough to make up for the card's $250 annual fee.

Check out our full review for more details.

Keep in mind that it's possible to be targeted for a higher welcome bonus.

Click here to learn more about the AmEx Gold Card from Business Insider's partner, The Points Guy.

6. Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card

Sign-up bonus: $500 (after spending $3,000 in the first three months).

If dining and cooking are your thing, and cash back is what you're after, the Capital One Savor is sure to please.

The card earns unlimited 4% cash back on all dining and entertainment, 2% back at grocery stores, and 1% on everything else. Plus, the card offers a whopping $500 sign-up bonus when you spend $3,000 in the first three months.

The Savor carries a lower annual fee than the AmEx Gold — $95, waived the first year. The earning rate will make up for the fee in many cases, based on normal spending, but if that's too high for you, there's an alternative: the Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card.

The SavorOne card has no annual fee, and offers a slightly lower — but still valuable — earning rate of 3% cash back on dining and entertainment, 2% back at grocery stores, and 1% on everything else. It offers a lower sign-up bonus of $150 when you spend $500 in the first three months.

7. Wells Fargo Propel American Express® Card

wells fargo propel credit card lifestyle 22

Welcome offer: 30,000 Go Far points (after spending $3,000 in the first three months).

This card from Wells Fargo has one of the more attractive rewards offerings you'll find from a no-annual-fee card. The current Propel card is a relaunch of an old product — Wells Fargo stopped accepting applications for the old card a year ago, before announcing the new product and reopening applications this summer.

The card earns 3x points on all travel, dining, and select streaming services (and 1x point on everything else). If that sounds familiar, it's because it's almost the same as the popular Chase Sapphire Reserve.

There are key differences between the cards. The Propel lets you redeem points for 1¢ each toward cash back, merchandise, travel, or more, while the Sapphire Reserve offers a range of more valuable redemption options — it's easy to get at least 50% more value for Chase points. Plus, the Sapphire Reserve offers a number of premium perks that the Propel doesn't, like airport lounge access, a $300 annual travel credit travel delay insurance, and more.

Of course, the Sapphire Reserve also comes with a $450 annual fee, while the Wells Fargo Propel doesn't have a fee. Between the new member offer, and the solid earning rate on popular spend categories, the Propel makes a decent option for those who don't travel often, or who aren't comfortable floating a large annual fee.

We named the Propel the best no-fee card of 2018.

The best animal-proof outdoor garbage cans you can buy

$

  • Specially designed animal-proof garbage cans can prevent animals from getting into your trash, saving you time-consuming cleanup.
  • Our top pick, the Toter 64-Gallon Bear-Tight Wheeled Trash Can, features a steel-reinforced lid that's strong enough to keep even the most determined bears out of your trash.

I've always lived in fairly rural areas, but when I moved into my current home that's essentially located in the woods, I discovered just how persistent wildlife could be in getting into trash cans. I tried everything — bungee cords, chains, only putting the trash out the night before going to the dump — but these critters persevered. I would have resorted to keeping the garbage cans on my enclosed porch, were it not for fear of a determined bear coming along and simply letting himself into my home.

At last, I started experimenting with all manner of animal-proof garbage cans. Finally, I found solutions to keeping the raccoons, squirrels, rodents, neighborhood dogs, and just about everything else out.

Keeping animals out of your garbage cans can be a big task, but it's also an important one. While some of the garbage cans in this list are on the more expensive side, they're likely worth it in terms of the time and frustration they'll save you, especially if you're dealing with persistent visits from wildlife. Plus, if you have a dog who is attracted to your garbage or who might come across a spilled container before you're aware of it, then these garbage cans could save your dog from serious digestive upset and a potential emergency trip to the vet. (When you consider the cost of an emergency vet trip, these cans will pay for themselves.)

We've evaluated these garbage cans according to their design, overall performance, ease of use, and the types of animals they're built to keep out. These garbage cans are ideal for homeowners or renters who live just about anywhere. In cases like mine, they're useful for keeping all sorts of wildlife out (even bears), but they're also ideal for urban residents who are dealing with rats, raccoons, and other animals.

If you're looking for additional ways to keep animals from bothering your garbage cans, strategies such as sprinkling some ammonia on each trash bag can help to deter raccoons and dogs. Leaving your garbage cans in an area that's well-lit or with lights that are on motion sensors at night may also help.

Here are our top picks for the best animal-proof garbage cans in 2019:

Keep scrolling to read more details about our top picks.

The best overall

The extremely strong and durable Toter 64-Gallon Bear-Tight Wheeled Trash Can is your best defense against all types of wildlife.

Very few garbage cans are strong enough to keep bears from getting into your trash, but this Toter 64-Gallon Bear-Tight Wheeled Trash Can is one of the few that's up to the task. The key to this trash can's strength is its steel-reinforced rim and latch, and its double-walled lid. The bear-proof latch helps to keep your garbage secure, and the polyethylene construction is durable and scratch-resistant. Quarter-inch steel U-bolt hinges further reinforce the lid and ensure that it can't be easily pulled off. While this garbage can will keep bears out, it's ANSI-certified for both safety and compatibility with automated and semi-automated garbage truck lifters.

Looking for proof that this garbage can is really strong enough to withstand a hungry bear? Be sure to watch the video in the product description of what happens when the garbage can is left in the middle of a bear habitat.

As you can tell from its name, this garbage can has a generous 64-gallon capacity. It is built with rugged wheels, so you can easily tilt and roll the can on any type of terrain. Additionally, it is constructed with up to 50% recycled content.

The 64-Gallon Bear-Tight Wheeled Trash Can has a 5-star rating on Home Depot. One customer wrote, "It keeps out the raccoons! Very heavy so not as easy to take to curb ... it takes a minute to figure out how to disable the automatic latch for garbage pickup day but so far it has worked."

Pros: Rugged, durable design, bear-tight lock, steel-reinforced latch and rim, wheeled design

Cons: Heavier than most other garbage cans, pricey

Buy the Toter 64-Gallon Bear-Tight Wheeled Trash Can at the Home Depot for $219.98

The best budget container

At less than $40, the United Solutions 32-Gallon Wheeled Outdoor Trash Can gives you protection against animals, at a budget price.

Animal-proof garbage cans don't have to cost hundreds of dollars. If you don't have bears in your area, you can opt for something a little more lightweight, like this 32-Gallon Wheeled Outdoor Trash Can from United Solutions. Heavy-duty, blow-molded plastic makes this a durable can, and its 32-gallon capacity is perfect for household use, yard work, and more. Wheels and a handle make it easy to move it around.

This trash can features a turn-and-lock lid that creates a strong seal. I've been using this trash can for more than two years, and while a bear did get into it once, it's done an excellent job of keeping raccoons and other animals out. The locking lid is quite strong, and it goes on fairly smoothly once you get it lined up correctly. Sometimes the lock is so strong that I have to use two hands to get the lid unlocked again, but I would see this as a benefit, rather than a flaw.

If I could change one thing about this garbage can, I'd add a second handle or lip halfway down the can, below its main handle. This would make lifting it into and out of my truck much easier, especially when it's particularly heavy.

Pros: Turn-and-lock lid is easy to operate, heavyweight plastic construction, manageable 32-gallon capacity

Cons: Could use a second handle, won't keep bears out of your trash

Buy the United Solutions 32-Gallon Wheeled Outdoor Trash Can at the Home Depot for $34.84

The best rodent-proof container

If rodents are chewing their way through your plastic garbage cans, the Behrens 20-Gallon Metal Garbage Can will stop them in their tracks.

When it comes to keeping rodents out of your trash cans, metal is one of the only ways to stop them from chewing their way through the cans. The Behrens 20-Gallon Metal Garbage Can is made of galvanized steel for chew-proof durability. The lid fits tightly, though there isn't any sort of latch or system to hold the lid in place, so larger animals, like raccoons, could still get into this garbage can (and make a lot of noise).

This trash can offers plenty of benefits. Thanks to its steel construction, it won't absorb odors the way plastic trash cans do. Two generously sized handles make it easy to carry, and the steel will not rust. An offset design keeps the actual bottom of the can from touching the ground, further extending its life by preventing it from sitting in rainwater or moist ground.

It's also made with no oil and is fully recyclable. Behrens has been producing metal containers since 1911, and this garbage can is manufactured in the USA.

The Behrens 20-Gallon Metal Garbage Can has a 4.1 out of 5-star Amazon rating based on more than 150 reviews. One customerwrote, "Good, solid construction. We use this for dog food storage in the garage. We had rodents chewing through the plastic bin we replaced, so they can now wear down their teeth trying to chew through metal. I thought I might have to secure the lid with a bungee cord to keep rodents out, but the lit fits snug enough I don't have to." Another buyer also uses this garbage can to keep rodents out: "Our house is very rural. This product was used to store dog food to keep the rodents out. Works well."

Pros: Durable, rodents can't chew through the can, fully recyclable, offset bottom keeps can off of the ground

Cons: Lid doesn't lock onto the can, no protection against larger animals

Buy the Behrens 20-Gallon Metal Garbage Can from the Home Depot for $44.69

As college tuitions skyrocket to the most expensive they've ever been, online learning resources are popping up to fill the widening chasm.

Whether it's picking up a hard or soft skill needed to catch a hiring manager's eye, jump-starting your recreational creativity, or actually earning a master's degree from one of the top universities in the US, online platforms are helping democratize higher learning for a fraction of the cost required to enroll in universities.

Of those many online resources, Skillshare may be one of the most exciting.

Like a ClassPass for learning, a Skillshare membership gives you unlimited access to over 25,000 adult learning courses across thousands of disciplines — perfect for advancing your career or learning a new hobby. Classes range from beginner to expert and fall into categories like design, illustration, business, technology, photo and film, entrepreneurship, and writing — and you can sign up for multiple without any extra charge.

Each class is comprised of short lessons and a hands-on project, and you can share the project with your class to get feedback from peers or collaborate with the community.

Popular classes:

It's free for the first month for new users. After that, it's $15 monthly or $99 in one annual payment ($8.25 per month) for individuals. There are also volume discounts for teams that sign up together, and, in like with the mission of making learning accessible, students can get 50% off a Premium Membership with a valid .edu email address. And for every annual Premium Membership purchased, the site donates one to someone in financial need.

I started my own Skillshare membership because one of my all-time favorite authors, Roxane Gay (best known for "Bad Feminist" and "Hunger"), publicized that she was hosting a Personal Essays with Impact class on the site. If I had completed Gay's course in the month-long span of the free trial, then I hypothetically could have taken a class curated by a prestigious author and recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship for Creative Arts completely for free. In actuality, I adopted a slower pace and eventually decided to commit to the full year.

Screen Shot 2019 04 02 at 5.12.05 PM

Skillshare itself makes truly continual, high-level learning feasible with its affordable access, good material, and variety. But, unexpectedly, the trial process also helped me figure out if, post-grad, I wanted to commit to courses again. In theory, I know I'm happiest when I'm learning. But, I wasn't certain of it being put into practice until I tried it with the free trial, focused on a subject I was truly interested in.

The downsides to Skillshare to note are that, unlike pay-per-class learning communities like Udemy, you won't have lifetime access to the courses you take while you're a member. Once you cancel your membership, you lose access to your class videos and any downloadable material provided by teachers at the end of your current pay period. So, that means you have to make the most of the time you do plan to pay for the service (which may actually serve as a beneficial deadline for a service that relies upon personal discipline).

The bottom line

All in all, it's a great tool for lifelong learners who want variety, expertise, and flexibility, as well as professionals looking for an affordable way to sharpen their career skills or hone their craft — or a blend of the two. For $15 per month, or $99 per year (and even less for those with an .edu email) you can take multiple classes across thousands of disciplines. It cuts out the fees and time restrictions of finding and enrolling in a community college course and gives you more variety than most pay-per-class online learning platforms. If that sounds appealing, I recommend trying it free for the first month to see if you can fit it into your lifestyle too.

How to turn off or limit Google Assistant on your Android device, if you don't want it listening to you all of the time

galaxy s8 plus google assistant

Google Assistant has its uses — finding a song name, having a hands-free option for Google searches, creating reminders for various tasks. But sometimes activating it is too easy, or for some the fact that it's always listening is just creepy, rather than helpful.

Sometimes, what you really want is to disable the feature and have more control over your tech.

Whatever your reason, turning off Google Assistant is relatively easy for those with Android devices. Doing so will completely revoke your access to the Assistant's features. But if you prefer to have occasional access, you might instead consider deactivating the support button, rather than turning off Google Assistant altogether. That way, you'll still be able to access the assistant through your phone, but you can't do so via the home button.

Here's how to perform either action on your Android device:

How to turn off Google Assistant on Android

For those who are completely over Google Assistant, follow these directions to turn it off completely via your Android device:

1. Open your Google app and then tap the three dots in the bottom toolbar (labeled as "more").

2. Select "Settings" to open up a new menu.

SCREENSHOT TURN OFF GOOGLE ASSISTANT 2

3. Tap "Google Assistant" and head over to the Assistant section.

SCREENSHOT TURN OFF GOOGLE ASSISTANT 3

4. Under "Assistant devices," select "Phone."

5. Tap the toggle button to turn off your Google Assistant.

SCREENSHOT TURN OFF GOOGLE ASSISTANT 4

How to deactivate the Google Assistant support button

For those who still want access to Google Assistant, but with a bit more intentionality, deactivating the support button can be a good alternative to turning it off completely. Basically, it means that you can't accidentally turn on your Google Assistant via your phone's home button.

Here's how to deactivate it:

1. Swipe your finger down from the top of the screen and tap the gear icon to go to your settings.

SCREENSHOT TURN OFF GOOGLE ASSISTANT 5

2. Scroll down to the "Applications" section, then select "Default applications."

SCREENSHOT TURN OFF GOOGLE ASSISTANT 6

3. Tap "Device assistance app" or "Assistant and Voice Input" (the wording of these commands can vary from device to device).

SCREENSHOT TURN OFF GOOGLE ASSISTANT 7

4. To deactivate the Google Assistant support button, tap "Device Assistance App" (not the gear icon next to it) and choose an option other than Google Assistant.

SCREENSHOT TURN OFF GOOGLE ASSISTANT 9

Google Assistant is meant to be a useful tool, but if it just isn't working for you anymore, disabling it, or simply making it a harder to activate, can be helpful in minimizing your technological frustrations.

How to restore your iPhone from a backup after taking the 'nuclear option' of a factory reset

$
0
0

iPhone X

If you've had an iPhone for any length of time, you know it's largely trouble-free — an iPhone behaves more like an appliance than a finicky desktop computer. Even so, problems can still arise, and most glitches can remedied by simply restarting your phone.

On rare occasions, though, your problem runs so deep that, even after extensive troubleshooting, the phone is still behaving badly. In that case, you might want to perform a factory reset. This is the "nuclear option" — a factory reset will wipe all of the apps and data from your iPhone, and return it to the state it was in when you first took it out of the box after purchase.

But since a freshly erased iPhone isn't particularly useful, you probably want to restore all your apps and data from a recent backup. If the most recent backup includes corrupted files that continue to cause problems after the restore, you could try restoring older backups that pre-date the problem. And if your iPhone behaves badly even with your oldest backup re-installed, then you should reset the iPhone and ignore the backups, re-installing apps manually, one at a time from the App Store until you've "rebuilt" your iPhone.

Beware: Resetting and restoring an iPhone is a time-consuming process, and there's always some risk — however small — that restoring from a backup will fail, causing you to lose data in the process. Only perform these steps if you have tried troubleshooting your phone and nothing else has solved your problem.

How to backup your iPhone

Before you go any further, make sure you have a current backup of your data.

1. Open the Settings app.

2. Tap your Apple ID at the top of the screen and then tap "iCloud."

3. Near the bottom of the section called "Apps Using iCloud," tap "iCloud Backup."

4. See when the last successful backup was recorded; if it's in the last few hours, that might be good enough. If the backup isn't fresh, tap "Back Up Now" and wait for the backup to complete.

How to factory reset and restore your iPhone

Before you reset your iPhone, make sure you've done the previous steps — have a recent backup of your data available — and also make sure that your have your Apple ID and password available, since you will need these credentials to sign in to your Apple account and restore your backup.

1. Open the Settings app.

2. Tap "General," and then tap "Reset."

3. On the Reset page, tap "Erase all Content and Settings," and choose "Erase Now." If, for some reason, you haven't already backed up your iPhone, this is your last chance — you can choose "Backup then Erase."

restore 2

4. Your iPhone will take a few minutes to reset to factory conditions. After that, you'll be greeted with the iPhone's initial welcome screen.

5. On the Apps & Data screen, tap "Restore from iCloud Backup."

6. Your iPhone will ask you to sign into iCloud. Use your Apple ID to sign in.

7. Tap "Next" and, on the Choose Backup screen, you'll see a list of recent backups. Tap the one that you want to install.

In a few minutes, your apps and most data should be restored to your iPhone. Be aware, though, that additional data (like songs from your iTunes library and your photo collection) might take several hours to be fully restored to your phone.

How to share your location on an iPhone in 4 different ways

Apple stocks market value trillion dollars company iphone mac

If you've ever tried to meet someone at a particular location but you didn't know the exact address, you'd probably appreciate the ability to tell them exactly where you are without knowing the details.

That's exactly what your iPhone lets you do — share your location via GPS with anyone with just a tap.

Because of some obvious privacy concerns, your phone doesn't broadcast your location all the time. Instead, you need to choose to send your location to a specific person.

You have a lot of options to do so — you can send your current location to someone via Messages, Contacts, Google Maps, or Apple Maps. And depending upon the app, you can send your current location just once, or share your location for a period of time — which is handy if you're on the go and want someone to be able to find you wherever you are, for example.

How to enable location services on an iPhone

Before you can share your location with anyone, you should make sure location services are turned on.

1. Open the Settings app.

2. Tap "Privacy" and then tap "Location Services."

3. Ensure Location Services is on by swiping the slider to the right.

4. If you also want to share your location continuously with someone for a period of time (rather than just sending a one-time location message) tap "Share My Location" and then ensure it's on by swiping the slider to the right.

location 1

How to send or share your location using Messages

1. Open a conversation with the person whom you want to send your location to.

2. Tap the top of the screen, which includes the icon for the person you are chatting with.

3. Tap the info icon ("i" in a circle) and choose the kind of location sharing you want to do:

  • If you want to send your current location, tap "Send My Current Location."
  • If you want to share your location for a period of time, tap "Share My Location," and then choose how long you want your location to be visible — an hour, for the rest of the day, or forever.

4. Tap "Done."

How to share your location with a contact

You can share your location with someone using the Contacts app.

1. Open the Contacts app.

2. Find the person you want to share your location with and tap on the contact.

3. Tap "Share My Location" and then choose how long you want your location to be visible.

How to share your location using Google Maps

If you happen to have a Google Maps open, you can share your location directly from there.

1. Open Google Maps.

2. Tap the blue dot that indicates your location (if you don't see it on the screen, tap the arrow in the lower right to put your position in the middle of the map).

3. In the pop-up menu, tap "Share your location."

location 3

4. Choose how long you want to share your location. You can increase the time to as long as three days, or you can tap "Until you turn this off."

5. Tap "Select People."

6. Tap each person in your contact list whom you want to include. You can tap the downward pointing arrow to choose an email address or phone number to contact them with.

7. When you're done making selections, tap "Share" in the upper right corner.

How to share your location using Apple Maps

Apple Maps allows you to share your location as well, though the process is slightly different than it is in Google Maps.

1. Open Apple Maps.

2. Tap the blue dot that indicates your location (if you don't see it on the screen, tap the arrow in the upper right to put your position in the middle of the map).

3. In the pop-up menu, tap "Share My Location."

4. Choose the app you want to use to share your location, and then use that app to choose the person you want to share with.

Insider Picks writes about products and services to help you navigate when shopping online. Insider Inc. receives a commission from our affiliate partners when you buy through our links, but our reporting and recommendations are always independent and objective.

best mascaras 2

  • If there's one thing many women never leave home without, it's mascara.
  • It makes your eyes pop and brightens up your face in an instant.
  • We tested dozens of mascaras to find the best, and Chanel Le Volume Mascara is our top choice because it delivers long, lush lashes that last all day.

A good mascara works wonders even if you have no other makeup on, but there is a dizzying array to choose from. We even found one brand that had 17 different mascaras!

Whether you want volume, length, curl, or all three, when looking for the perfect mascara, you'll need one that doesn't run or clump and has staying power.

We tested dozens of mascaras, including drugstore brands, designers, cult classics, and all-natural options. We also looked at thousands of reviews from women who wear mascara and beauty experts to find the absolute best mascaras you can buy.

Here are the best mascaras you can buy in 2019:

Updated 5/8/2019 by Jada Wong: Updated formatting and prices, added L'Oréal Paris Voluminous X Fiber Mascara, and removed Honest Beauty Truly Lush Mascara and Primer, as it was discontinued.

Keep scrolling to check out our top picks.

The best mascara overall

Chanel Le Volume Mascara boosts lash volume, doesn't clump, and stays on all day to keep you looking gorgeous.

Our winner, Chanel Le Volume, lives up to its name, adding plenty of lash-boosting volume without clumping, which is often a problem with volumizing mascaras. It has a spiky brush with a blend of short and long bristles that are designed to separate and lift.

The creamy formula plumps lashes, and in our tests, we really noticed our lashes looked longer and curled upward, too, making eyes pop. All you need is one coat for daytime or two for a night out. The color is rich and bold, plus, it coats your lashes easily. In case you want it, this mascara comes in a waterproof formula, too.

Celebrity makeup artists, Kara Yoshimoto Bua and Rachel Goodwin, swear by this mascara and it is one of Elle's top mascaras. It also gets rave reviews from women who wear it every day.

One buyer who wrote a review on Macy's website said she had compliments from her co-workers the first day she wore it. One reviewer did say she experienced a little clumping, but it's easy enough to solve the issue.

Pros: Easy to apply, adds volume, length and curl, long-wearing, no flaking or smudging

Cons: High price tag

Buy Chanel le Volume Mascara at Nordstrom for $32

The best drugstore mascara

L'Oreal Paris Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara adds volume, length, and curl for an effect that rivals many high-end mascaras.

Many people swear by drugstore mascaras, and this bestseller certainly has a cult following. L'Oreal Paris Voluminous Lash Paradise outdoes many more expensive types of mascaras and, in fact, is often compared to Too Faced's best-selling Better than Sex mascara.

Our drugstore favorite comes in an all-pink tube and is easy to apply, thanks to the wavy brush, which has more than 200 bristles. We were impressed with the volume and length it created with our lashes.

It also feathers lashes, really opening up the eyes. For a more dramatic look, just add a second coat. We didn't see clumping or flaking, and it stays on for hours. The formula is washable, although we found it betterto use makeup remover when you take it off.

L'Oreal's mascara was even named Harper's Bazaar's Best Mascara of all time. It gets rave reviews on Influenster, with one customer saying, "it is amazing for separating lashes and really getting mascara on to each and every single one, creating a very full looking lash." It also comes in a waterproof formula.

Pros: Volumizes, lengthens, curls, washable

Cons: Possibility of some clumping

Buy L'Oreal Paris Voluminous Lash Paradise in Black from Target for $6.49 (originally $8.99)

The best volumizing mascara

For bold lashes that last and last, Lancôme's Monsieur Big should be your go-to mascara.

It's hard not to fall in love with this fabulous mascara. Lancôme's Monsieur Big claims to deliver 12 times more volume with 24-hour wear, and in our tests, it seemed to deliver. It certainly lasted all day and made our lashes look thick.

The wavy brush is easy to use and the soft bristles won't scratch your eyelids. The creamy formula contains polymers that pack lashes full of thickness, length, and jet black color. It opens up your eyes and extra coats create insane volume as well as length, for a false lash effect that we loved. It also looks as good after a night out as it does when you first put it on.

This mascara gets consistently high ratings from beauty experts and was a winner in Allure's Best of Beauty Awards in 2017. It has 10,000 likes on Sephora, with one buyer saying it was her new Holy Grail mascara.

Pros: Easy to apply, adds exceptional volume and length, very long-wearing, doesn't smudge

Cons: Can be difficult to remove

Buy Lancôme's Monsieur Big from Sephora for $25

The reason humans have sharp front teeth isn't for tearing meat

$
0
0
  • Humans have sharp front teeth called canines, just like lions, hippos, and other mammals.
  • Contrary to popular belief, human canines are not for tearing and ripping meat. Instead, our ancestors used them to fight male rivals for mating rights.
  • Over time, human species evolved smaller and smaller canines as we stopped using our teeth as weapons.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Following is a transcript of the video.

Lions have them, hippos have them, and even you and I have them: canines, those long, pointy front teeth. They're actually the longest teeth in the human mouth. So what are these long, sharp teeth doing among our short, stubby ones? Well, contrary to popular belief, it's not for tearing and ripping meat. The real reason is actually much more romantic than that.

Human men today have 10% longer canines than women, and this difference isn't unique to our species. Our close relatives, gorillas, have it as well to an even larger extent. Males' canines are twice as long as females'. That's because in gorilla society, males compete for exclusive mating rights to the entire female troop, and the male with the longest, most intimidating set of fangs usually wins. Over time, gorillas have evolved increasingly longer canines, but when it comes to humans, our teeth took a different evolutionary path. Our canines have actually become shorter over time. Just look at the canines on the first human, Ardipithecus ramidus, or Australopithecus anamensis versus modern humans.

In fact, our canines today are the shortest they've ever been, and the difference between male and female canines got less pronounced as well. That's because unlike modern gorillas who take after our shared ancient ancestors, human men eventually stopped fighting with their teeth somewhere along the way. Now, scientists aren't entirely sure why this happened, but one possibility is that our babies grew increasingly defenseless, so males had to spend more time on childcare and less time on winning a mate.

As a result, all that's left in our mouths today is the memory of a more slobbery method of one-upping our peers. That's right, those canines you carry around today aren't particularly useful. For one thing, they're not long enough to grab and hold on to prey the way lions use them, and they're not big enough to intimidate predators' arrivals the way hippos use them. Instead, they help us bite into food. That's it. Turns out, evolution isn't always useful, but while the truth about our canines might be disappointing, those teeth are still pretty amazing because anthropologists use canine size and shape to help track when humanlike ancestors evolved. So in a way, our tiny canines make us who we are.

  • The Google Home Hub (newly rebranded as the Nest Hub) is a smart display that comes with the Google Assistant for easy smart home control, video playback, and visual answers to your questions.
  • Usually, the smart display comes in at $149, but Best Buy and Walmart have discounted it to $99 for a limited time.
  •  At Best Buy, you can get the discounted Google Home Hub with a free Google Home Mini smart speaker.

Google Assistant is arguably the smartest voice assistant out there, thanks to Google's long history of building up its artificial intelligence and search prowess. Google Assistant is available in a range of products, including the Google Home smart speakers, and the Home Hub smart display (now rebranded as Nest Home and Nest Hub, respectively).

For a limited time, the Hub is on sale at Best Buy for a very affordable $99— plus it comes with a free Google Home Mini smart speaker. The duo makes a great pair for bringing smarts to your home. Walmart has also discounted the Hub to $99, but you won't get a free Mini with it.

On the Hub's 7-inch touchscreen, you'll be able to see information displayed visually, including the weather, upcoming appointments on your calendar, and your commute. You can even watch YouTube videos and play music on the Hub. It's the perfect companion for anywhere in the home.

The sound quality of the Google Home Hub is pretty good, too, though it's not quite for audiophiles. You'll get decent bass response and enough high-end to offer some clarity. You can tweak the frequency response, too, thanks to the built-in EQ.

Usually, the Google Home Hub costs $149 and it doesn't always come with a free Google Home Mini speaker, so this deal really is a good one. This particular deal is at Best Buy, but you can also get the discounted Google Home Hub from Walmart for $99 (it's listed with its new Google Nest Hub name) — you won't get a free Mini, though.

I'm a devout fan of the original Sperry boat shoes, but I've been wearing its new recycled ocean plastic sneakers lately — here's how they stack up

$

Insider Picks writes about products and services to help you navigate when shopping online. Insider Inc. receives a commission from our affiliate partners when you buy through our links, but our reporting and recommendations are always independent and objective.

sperry3

  • Sperry has hopped on the bandwagon of footwear made from ocean plastics.
  • Several weeks into heavy use around the city and the sea, my pair of Captain's CVO Bionic sneakers ($69) are holding up splendidly.
  • They're also about $30 cheaper than my normal pair, the Original Boat Shoes.

I'm a devout, dyed-in-the-wool classic Sperry enthusiast, by and large. From roughly daylight savings time until the first frost of fall, they are just about the only shoes I'll wear. And while I do spend enough time on boats to warrant this proclivity, I usually prefer to spend those precious hours unencumbered by footwear.

I really only shackle my feet with shoes when my job requires it of me, but the simplistic design and ever-softening leather of Sperrys have always seemed to soften the blow a little. And, while I tend to wear them in effigy of all that they symbolize, the full-grain leather, stitched together with what seems like sail-grade thread, just lasts forever. I like that.

But this spring, something strange happened. Sperry gifted me a pair of sneakers from its new Bionic collection, the result of a collaboration with Bionic Yarn, a textile and polymer manufacturer turning coastal and marine plastics into apparel-worthy fibers. This is something we can get behind, and, whatever these shoes are made from — at least five plastic water bottles, according to Sperry's website — seems durable enough that it could even be made into sails, should the yachting community grow so inclined.

All in all, I've worn these shoes everywhere, they're holding up well, and they add a much-needed touch of color to my generally drab (if not downright dark) wardrobe. I'll keep them around.

sperry4

The Bionic line (and especially the Captain's CVOs in the photo above) might take a little getting used to if you're transitioning from a normal Top-Sider. Apart from their durability, there's a reason I rely so heavily on Sperry's Classic Boat Shoes: They're so understated that they're nearly invisible. I haven't liked flashy footwear since my (short-lived) days on the basketball court, and even two-toned sneakers are, generally speaking, a no-no on my shoe rack. I kept this particular pair beneath my desk for several weeks before I decided to break them out, which I did with much trepidation, I might add.

Needless to say, they've grown on me. And, despite initial comments such as one from an esteemed (New England-born) colleague Pat Coleman, who referred to them as "hipster bowling shoes," even a formidable cadre of my most Yacht-Club-phobic of associates have paid them compliments.

Boat shoes to boot, I'm curious to see how Sperry's Captain's CVO Bionic shoes last over time. At face value, they may look more like tennis shoes, but don't let the full-length lacing and new, blue treads fool you: They're boat shoes at heart, every bit as grippy and non-marking as their forebearers, though they are markedly lighter-weight.

sperry5

Possible downsides

These kicks are a good bit stiffer than the original leather Boat Shoes. The five-eye lacing also makes them a bit of a chore to put on and take off, but not unlike most tennis shoes. I'm just lazy. Also like tennis shoes, the rubber sole looks as though it will separate from the upper in a year or two's time. Vans do this, as do Converse's signature Chuck Taylors: This is just the nature of these shoes, and, frankly, a good reason to consider the Authentic Original Bionic Boat Shoe instead.

And, while Sperry does offer their classic design in the Bionic line, they come with the old razor-cut "Wave-Siping" outsoles that work well, until they don't. But they'll last you at least a couple of seasons, and that's nothing out of the ordinary for a pair of kicks in this price range.

Final thoughts

Apart from being smarter than your average boat shoes (and maybe a little edgier, too), the Bionics can hack it just as well in the street, and, with slightly more beefed-up Ortholite insoles compared with the Original Boat Shoe, they're noticeably more comfortable, too.

Pros: Better grip, more comfortable than the original boat shoes, some models are less expensive

Cons: Might not last as long as the original boat shoe (depending on use), stiffer

baubles

  • I've already wrote about why I love shopping at BaubleBar. The site is a retail destination for trendy, affordable jewelry.
  • While I haven't spent much on my BaubleBar pieces, they've held up surprisingly well over time, and I wear them often.
  • Here are my favorite BaubleBar pieces, how they look after months of wear, and alternatives you can find on BaubleBar right now.

I love keeping up with all the latest jewelry trends, but I don't love spending hundreds of dollars on a pair of earrings I won't wear come next season. That's why BaubleBar is one of my favorite places to shop— they have an unmatched selection of affordable, trendy jewelry.

When it comes to jewelry, price usually is a pretty good indicator of quality. Precious gems and metals last longer than cheap imitations, so naturally they're more expensive. But, I've been pretty impressed with BaubleBar's quality thus far. While all of my purchases have been relatively affordable, none of the pieces were noticeably "cheap" — all have held up very well, barring one small pair of studs.

With affordable prices and new styles that are constantly being released, BaubleBar is an easy choice when I'm looking for trendy jewelry pieces. The high-quality look of these pieces actually lasts, so I don't see the need to pay more.

Here are what my pieces actually look like after months of wear, and some alternatives you can actually buy on the site now:

Resin Hoops

baublebar

The resin hoop trend was everywhere in the fall. I wanted to give it a try, but was looking for a simple pair to ease into the craze. I went for this pair from BaubleBar. Basic tortoiseshell has a timeless appeal, while the octagonal shape and gold accent make these stand out from the crowd just a little. At just $36 (with an added discount), these were an easy choice. They've held up really well over the past few months. They dress up a plain black T-shirt and jeans and add a fun vintage look when paired with colorful dresses. While I bought these as a trend piece, I see them lasting in my collection for a while.

The original pair are still available here, but here are a few more great resin hoop options you can find on BaubleBar right now:

Gold hoops

baublebar2

I wouldn't say gold hoops are a trend that just emerged out of nowhere, but they have certainly become an of-the-moment fashion essential. I had been searching for a simple pair of gold hoops for a while. As someone who generally prefers studs as my everyday pair, I wasn't willing to shell out a lot of money for a real gold pair. I spent ample time scouring sites like Etsy, Nordstrom, and jewelry boutiques searching for the "perfect" pair, but couldn't find any I loved.

When I found this set on BaubleBar about a year ago, I finally bit the bullet and got two pairs of long-awaited gold hoops. I think this set cost just around $50 (again, I had a discount — BaubleBar frequently has specials) and came with both a small and large pair. The small pair is very lightweight, and I find myself wearing them often — to dress up casual looks during the day or even for more formal occasions. The larger pair is a little heavier, so I tend to reserve those for special (or shorter occasions), but they boast the same look.

While I once considered myself a studs girl, I actually wear the smaller of these two pairs at least a few days every week. The hoops effortlessly elevate any outfit, and I frequently get compliments on how nice they look. ThoughBaubleBar no longer has this exact set, they do have plenty of gold hoops. Here are some of my favorites:

Bottom line

While my experience is only one, I've been consistently impressed with the quality of the pieces — they hold up well and in terms of style are comparable to more expensive options. If you're someone who wants to enjoy the ever-changing jewelry trends without spending a lot, BaubleBar is a great place to shop.

A woman who studied 600 millionaires says the same traits helped them get rich — and there are 2 key ways anyone can develop them

rich person

Millionaires are often cut from the same cloth — they're disciplined, have focus, are resilient, and practice perseverance.

These are all qualities that help them build wealth, according to Sarah Stanley Fallaw, co-author of "The Next Millionaire Next Door: Enduring Strategies for Building Wealth" and the director of research for the Affluent Market Institute. But these traits aren't necessarily innate — there are two ways anyone can develop them.

The first way, according to Stanley Fallaw, is to understand where you are today.

"If you know that you're prone to make emotional decisions, it's first being aware of that and kind of taking stock of that and asking yourself, okay, when is it that I'm making decisions that are really not in my best interest?" she said in an Afford Anything podcast with writer Paula Pant

Once you've built awareness, you should then build new behaviors around typical behaviors, Stanley Fallaw said. She referenced Charles Duhigg's book, "The Power of Habit," for an understanding of building new behaviors around things you don't often give thought to.

Read more: A researcher who studied more than 600 millionaires found the same 2 qualities helped them get rich

"The example he gives is the chocolate chip cookies that he's always eating at a certain time of day and all of a sudden he's gained all this weight," she said. "It's replacing some of those behaviors and you can do that with finances as well."

She added: "I think that it's first acknowledging that maybe you have a shortcoming related to some of those things. Which is hard for some of us to do. And then, replacing some of those behaviors with others that are more conducive to achieving your goals long term."

The benefits of measuring progress towards a goal

When building new habits, there's one thing you should watch out for: measurement.

According to James Clear, author of "Atomic Habits," measuring your progress towards a goal has three benefits: It can make the behavior more obvious, create an additive effect, and add immediate gratification.

However, if you obsess about the measurement too much, it loses its benefits as it becomes the target — a concept known as Goodhart's Law, Clear said. By becoming so focused on the measurement, he explained, you can pull yourself off course; overemphasizing quantifiable victories can cause you to miss the emotional signals of progress.

So if you over-focus on a target number to get rich, it may sidetrack you from the qualities — like resilience and perseverance — that can help get you there.

I'm a skeptical and nitpicky gamer who just tried Google's game-streaming service for the first time. Here's why Stadia surprised me. (GOOG, GOOGL)

stadia controller google io 2019 2

I just played a power-hungry AAA video game on a laptop that's absolutely not designed to play video games.

And I had a great time.

I was playing "Assassin's Creed Odyssey" through Google's recently revealed game-streaming service, Stadia. Stadia isn't publicly available yet, but Google allowed lucky visitors to its I/O developers conference this week to get some hands-on time with the new service.

The game I was playing was running on servers in San Jose, California, about 15 miles away from the Shoreline Amphitheatre where Google I/O takes place. Typically, when I play a game, it's on my Xbox or gaming PC, about five feet in front of me.

And this game was being streamed to a Chromebook laptop.

If you're not already familiar with Chromebooks, suffice it to say that these machines are 100% not designed to play video games with heavy-duty, demanding graphics. They're bare-bones laptops meant for browsing the web, streaming Netflix movies, and writing your history term paper.

Obviously, Google wanted to prove something.

So what was it like?

I'll admit, I was slightly distracted at times. The novelty of the experience made it impossible for me not to be on the lookout for inconsistencies like lag or drops in visual quality that I wouldn't typically experience on my console or PC. I suspect anyone else who enjoys gaming would also be looking for ways that Stadia differs from their typical gaming setup. It's only natural to be wary of something new, especially when some of the benefits aren't entirely clear yet.

google stadia at google io 2019

It's also tough to draw a definite conclusion from a demo of something that hasn't been released yet. And consider that I tried Stadia at a Google event, where the company has control over the internet infrastructure that's all-important for Stadia's streaming performance.

But, at least in this context, I can report that it felt just like playing on my Xbox at home.

There was no perceivable lag or latency during my short time playing the demo. The graphics looked great, and the game ran smoothly. There were no stutters or jitters.

The game's character moved the moment I'd push the Stadia controller's joystick, and she would swing her sword instantaneously the moment I'd press the button. The game's scenery and details looked no different to what I'd see on my Xbox, too.

stadia controller google io 2019

Google still hasn't answered important questions about Stadia, like pricing and the selection of games that will be available to play. A lot of Stadia's success and value will depend on those answers.

But if Google gets it right, Stadia will bring some big benefits. For one, it'll let people play big power-hungry games with beautiful graphics on almost any device, whether it's a smartphone, tablet, TV, or even a $200 laptop. You wouldn't need to buy a games console or a PC with powerful specs.

Secondly, it'll let you play a game on any device almost anywhere there's an internet connection — just as long as the internet connection is good enough.

For anyone interested in games but not quite ready to invest in a dedicated gaming console or PC, Stadia could be an easy way to become a gamer.

And for gamers like me, who log hours of action on consoles and high-end gaming rigs at home, Stadia could be the perfect traveling companion — a lifesaver for work trips like the one I'm on right now. Indeed, I'd love to have the option to boot up "Battlefield V" after a day at Google I/O.

Google will reveal more details about the Stadia service this summer. And based on my first taste of it, I can't wait to hear what Google will have to say.

The best roach killers and traps you can buy

trap killers

  • Any cockroaches that stay outside in nature are OK in my book and should have nothing to fear from humans. Any roaches that break the trust and come into our homes, however, need to die.
  • Our top pick to render said bugs dead is the Combat Max 12-Month Roach Killing Bait because, as the name suggests, its lethality starts on day one and lasts for a year.

You've probably heard cockroaches described as the ultimate survivors. After all, can't they survive a nuclear explosion? Well, not exactly, as it turns out. Anything caught up in the actual blast wave, be it a roach or a rhino, is as good as dead. But when it comes to withstanding radiation exposure, roaches have a tolerance that far exceeds our own — 50% of one test group survived a 30-day exposure to radiation levels that would have killed most humans in a matter of minutes.

And speaking of survival, some variety of roach ancestor has been extant for about 320 million years, which means that cockroaches not only survived the extinction event that killed off the dinosaurs some 66 million years ago, but that roaches were scurrying around the planet about 70 million years before the first Eoraptors were running around what today is Argentina.

So if your goal is complete and total global eradication of the cockroach, you're probably choosing a losing battle. If you're trying to keep your home or business roach-free, then we can help. We've included roach-killing products that get the job done fast, killing on contact, and those that get the job done slowly, allowing a roach to transport poison back to the nest.

The best combination for your infestation will probably be a blend of two or even three of these products, as roaches are indeed a tenacious and resilient foe. But don't worry, even though they have a few hundred million years of history over us humans, we've developed much larger brains, so we can figure this thing out and get you a roach-free property. Quick pro tip: proper food storage and waste disposal are probably going to be the most effective technique of all.

The best roach killer overall

You can place discrete Combat Max 12-Month Roach Killing Bait stations all around your home to create a virtual shield against roaches that will remain effective for up to a year.

If you're trying to deal with an infestation of common small roaches, you probably don't want to do so by keeping a can of insecticide at the ready at all times. Yet you do want your home to be a cockroach killing ground at all times. That's why so many people trust Combat Max 12-Month Roach Killing Bait stations.

These compact, discreet black discs can be placed in cabinets and drawers, under the fridge, behind the toilet, and just about anywhere else you want, and each of the 18 stations you get per box is loaded with enough roach poison to remain effective for up to a year in most circumstances.

The low cost and long lifespan (so to speak) of these bait stations are both certainly selling points, but so too is the ripple effect of their efficacy. For once an individual roach has ingested the Fipronil insecticide within the station, the insect will unwittingly transport lethal doses of the stuff back to its nest, potentially killing many more roaches and speeding the demise of the entire local population.

Most of the hundreds of reviews posted on Amazon come with 5-star ratings. One said that "within a day" of setting out the stations he "no longer saw live roaches." Another said, with a bit of humor, that his "only regret is that the roaches can't feel [his] hate."

Pros: Long term efficacy, great low price, discreet and easy use

Cons: Not effective against larger roach species

The best roach killing spray

Sometimes, you get up close and personal with a cockroach. When you do, kill it fast with a can of Raid Ant & Roach Killer Insecticide Spray.

If your entire plan for dealing with a serious roach problem involves spraying every insect you see with insecticide, then you can count on having a roach problem for many years to come, friend. Treating the issue means killing off the bugs you can't see, which will vastly outnumber the individuals spotted scurrying to and fro. Sorry to tell you that, but it's the truth.

However, as part of a comprehensive roach eradication campaign, it's invaluable to have a kill-on-contact spray at your disposal, and Raid Ant & Roach Killer Insecticide Spray is certainly that. One quick spritz of this surprisingly inoffensive lemon-scented formula and that roach making a beeline for a crack in the wall is dead meat.

This spray can also be used to treat areas of known roach activity, making them temporarily lethal to insects passing through, though the spray lacks the ability to render an exposed insect lethal to others such as many baits do.

With more than 100 customer reviews posted on Amazon, this legacy insecticide brand's roach killer spray has an average 4.3-star rating. One buyer who was "disgust" with roaches, was quite satisfied with the "quality product" that "killed several roaches" immediately upon the first use and smelled "lemony and... almost pleasant."

Morning Chores said the spray works "against other crawling insects like ants, waterbugs, silverfish, crickets, spiders, and the Multicoloured Asian Lady Beetle. The spray has a pleasant scent and it leaves no lingering chemical odor."

Pros: Kills almost instantly, pleasant scent, effective against myriad pests

Cons: Not a long-term pest solution

Buy a 2-Pack of Raid Ant & Roach Killer Insecticide Spray on Amazon for $13.79

The best roach killing gel

You can apply Advion Cockroach Gel Bait exactly where you want it, even in the smallest cracks and crevices, and you can count on roaches bringing its lethal formula back to the nest.

The process of using Advion Cockroach Gel Bait isn't as simple as tossing a few bait stations or traps around the house, nor is it as easy as just spraying every insect you see to kill them on site. But while a more laborious initial undertaking, this stuff more than makes up for the effort required in its extreme lethality to roaches.

It is highly effective for two reasons, the first being the fact that the carboxylate insecticide is simply very deadly to insects. The second reason is that the brand has come up with a blend of ingredients that roaches find irresistible.

Using the included applicator tips, you can spread lines or dots of this gel wherever you have seen roaches in the past or where you suspect they may be lurking. It can be squeezed into cracks in the wall, corners of baseboards, behind trashcans, and anywhere else in your home you see fit for treatment. The gel is also rated for use on boats, planes, or on any other vehicle that might have developed a roach infestation, such as your own car.

With more than 1,000 reviews posted at the time of this writing, Advion Cockroach Gel Bait scores a 5-star rating among 68% of Amazon customers who left feedback. One buyer called it the "best roach killer" he has ever used, while another said the "bad infestation gone in just two weeks" of use.

The Pest Management said this gel can "easily get rid of heavy cockroach infestations" and is definitely "worth buying." Morning Chores picked this as one of its favorites.

Pros: Long lasting killing action, irresistible to roaches, good for heavy infestations

Cons: Labor-intensive use
