I drove a $126,000 BMW M850 convertible to find out if the car could combine power and style — here's the verdict

BMW 850

  • The BMW M850 convertible is a stylish throwback with a powerful engine that nonetheless comes packed with high-tech features.
  • The convertible isn't cheap.
  • But the hefty price tag is certainly worth it if you've reached a certain stature in life and want to reward yourself.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

In a world that seems to want nothing but suburban utes and upscale pickups, cars like the BMW M850 convertible are romantic anachronisms. What's the point of a top-down, grand-touring, two-door convertible with a 523-horsepower engine in a realm of bubbly crossovers with turbocharged four-bangers and trucks with room in the back for lumber and logs?

The rationale behind the revived BMW 8-Series is that there must be some people out there in Carlandia who value a long drive at high speed while dressed to the nines. They're probably older folks who spend more than $300 on sunglasses and favor equally pricey Italian sportswear. Their luggage matches. They fly first class.

And the last time they had a BMW 850 to spend money on, it was the 1990s. Sure, they've had the 6 Series. But decades ago, the old 8's massive V12 motor meant that while the junior talent agents and guys who were trying to make partner while driving the 3 Series, there was something special for those who had hit the upper rungs of life's ladder.

The V12 option is gone, and in its place is a superior (if less cool to speak of aloud) V8 that rocks a pair of turbochargers. Simply put, the new M850 isn't screwing around with its raison d'être: to propel affluent adults toward the horizon at impressive velocities.

BMW recently loaned us a 2019 M850i xDrive convertible with all-wheel drive, stickering at $126,000. (There's also a coupé that starts at about $112,000.) I drove this first ragtop of the year around New York City and the New Jersey suburbs. I rolled large — very large. Here's what I thought.

The 2019 BMW M850i xDrive convertible arrived in a sharp "Sonic Speed Blue" paint job.

The BMW 8 Series has been missing in action since the late 1990s. But boy, that old car was a thing of beauty! Back then, you could choose between a V8 or a V12.

The M850 looks ... OK with the top up, but the coupé looks better.

hydro flask $29.95

While most of us have outgrown the years where a misspelled card made out of raw noodles was pure magic, not all of us have the budget to gift Mom a diamond roughly the size of a deflated basketball.

Thankfully, most of the mom figures I know genuinely prefer something that says how much you love her, or how actively you thought about her needs, more than a high price tag. There are plenty of wonderful options that won't cost you more than $50 — and 55 of them are listed for you below. If you're looking for more options, we also have a gift guide filled with Mother's Day gift ideas under $100

If you're looking for more Mother's Day gift ideas, we have you covered:

A "book of the month" membership she can look forward to every month

Gift a Book of the Month Membership, from three months for $44.99

If she loves to read and isn't ready to go 100% digital, we can't recommend a Book of the Month membership highly enough. Each month's book selections are chosen by recurring and celebrity guest judges who are passionate about books, like Anthony Bourdain, Arianna Huffington, and Allison Williams from "Girls." The judges curate and select the best new hardcover titles for members from a broad range of genres and offer a mix of both fiction and nonfiction titles, sure to impress even the pickiest bibliophiles.

A beautiful bouquet of farm-fresh flowers she can keep in the house

Gift a bouquet from The Bouqs, from $36

You can grab her a potted plant if she enjoys caring for them over time, but another great option is sending her a beautiful bouquet of flowers that she can enjoy for a few weeks with minimal effort and then throw out. If you want to get her something more lasting, you can pick up a vase ($12-$249), too.

A Himalayan salt block she can use for just about every use cooking

Gift the Himalayan Salt BBQ Plank, $30

If your mom likes to cook (or, if someone else does the cooking and she just loves to eat good food), a Himalayan salt block may be a thoughtful gift. People love they give meals enhanced flavor that can't be mimicked by a frying pan. Plus, the minerals in salt are supposed to give a more nuanced flavor than table salt, and the amount of saltiness will be regulated by the type of food (moist food absorbs more, fatty foods repel it).

Himalayan salt has a very stable crystal structure, which allows it to hold a temperature very well. Mom can chill it to serve as a platter for sushi or heat it over the grill or stovetop to cook veggies.

4 ways to stop letting people walk all over you at work, according to a career coach

melody wilding

  • Melody Wilding is an executive coach who helps smart, sensitive high-achievers let go of perfectionism, communicate confidently, and find lasting work-life balance.
  • She says that while caring about your work is great, giving too much can deplete you quickly — and others will take advantage of your kindness.
  • She offers four tips for breaking through the behavior, including pushing back against unreasonable requests and learning to say no.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Deadlines. New demands. Rising expectations. If you're like most accomplished professionals, you spend most of your day fighting off requests from other people. They want your time, energy and expertise. Since you're a loyal team player, you're happy to give it. Perhaps you're also the last one to leave at the end of the day and the first one to take on new responsibilities.

While caring about your work is great, giving too much can deplete you quickly. As a result of chronic people-pleasing, you may feel like people take advantage of your kindness and commitment. You may feel overwhelmed, overworked and unappreciated for all of the extra support you provide, which can lead to burnout and resentment.

How do you break the people-pleasing cycle?

Here are four steps to try:

1. Name your underlying fear

Typically, people pleasing is the flip side of tremendous strengths like sensitivity and commitment. Your intentions to help may come from a good place, but it's important to own up to the fears that are driving your "need to please." Do you fear rejection? Failure? Simply putting a label on your fears can reduce their power over you.

2. Get radically honest about what people-pleasing is costing you

Ask yourself if the payoff of always being the likable or dependable one around the office is worth the consequences. Agreeing to every request can not only wear you out, but also undermine your personal integrity. You may find yourself carrying out ideas you don't truly believe in. Conversely, the ability to assert yourself appropriately, take pride in your ideas and prioritize your own needs can help you excel in your career.

3. Teach others how to treat you

If you don't value your time, no one else will. Instead of making yourself overly accessible, put boundaries in place. Push back against unreasonable requests and learn to say no.

Privately rehearse responses like, "I have a big deadline approaching, and I'm completely focused on that. Try asking Angela for help," or "I can work on that after I complete this report." You may also want to consider establishing timeframes. For example, "I am free to help on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m."

Practicing phrases like these will make turning down a project feel much more natural, which can alleviate concerns about damaging your relationships.

4. Do the opposite

If jumping in to help is your default response (even when it's counterproductive or self-sabotaging), borrow a psychological technique known as "opposite action". "Opposite action" is exactly what it sounds like. It involves redirecting unhelpful responses to healthier behavior by doing the opposite of what our emotions tell us to do. If your urge is to step in and mediate every problem, do the opposite by coaching people to take ownership of solutions themselves, for instance.

Striving to make everyone happy all of the time is not sustainable. It might be possible in the short term, but ultimately, the only person you have complete control over is you. Make yourself your first priority, and you'll be happier in your work and a better professional for it.

AmEx is making a play for millennials with 6% back on Netflix and Hulu on its most popular cash-back card

AmEx Blue Cash Preferred

  • One of the best cash-back AmEx cards is getting a facelift — making it even better at earning rewards for millennials.
  • Starting today, May 9, the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express will begin offering 6% back on US streaming services, and 3% back on all transit.
  • That's in addition to 6% back at US supermarkets (on up to $6,000 per year — 1% after that), 3% at US gas stations, and 1% on everything else. It will no longer earn 3% at US department stores, though — that category drops to 1%.
  • Also new: The welcome bonus on the card has increased from $200 to $250 when you spend $1,000 in the first three months.

American Express announced big changes to one of its most successful cash-back cards, and they've just gone live.

Starting today, May 9, the Blue Cash Preferred Card has two new bonus categories: US streaming subscriptions, which earns 6% back, and transit, which earns 3% back.

Those categories are in addition to US supermarkets (6% back on up to $6,000 per year, then 1%) and US gas stations (3%). Select US department stores, at which the Blue Cash Preferred currently offers 3% back, will only offer 1% back, along with all other non-bonus-category purchases.

The streaming services category is exceptionally broad, and includes less-obvious providers like Amazon Prime Video and YouTube, as well as Netflix, Hulu, HBO Go, Apple Music and Spotify, Amazon Kindle Unlimited, and Audible.

Liz Bergman, AmEx's VP of US lending product, told Business Insider that the transit category will cover virtually every form of ground in the US transportation, including subways, buses, taxis and rideshares (like Uber and Lyft), tolls, parking, commuter and long-distance rail, and parking.

According to Bergman, the changes come as AmEx refocuses its products to target millennials who are "growing up."

"'Everyday' spending is different today than it was in 2011, when the card launched," she said. "It's the card for cord cutters."

Blue Cash Preferred Infographic

The card's welcome bonus will be also see a change: A hefty increase.increasing. You'll earn a $250 statement credit after you spend $1,000 in the first three months. Previously, the bonus was just $200 for the same amount of spend in the same timeframe.

Anyone who already had the card will automatically start earning cash back at the new rates — the 3% rate at US department stores will continue for those members until July 31.

The card is also getting a redesign — existing cardholders will receive the new version when their current cards expire, or they can call the number on the back of their cards to request the new version. Alongside the design changes, the new card features contactless payment.

The Blue Cash Preferred has a $95 annual fee, which can be offset by the amount of cash back earned depending on your spending habits.

The best womens sunglasses

  • Sunglasses double as a fun fashion statement and protective eyewear. You could just get a cheap pair that'll break in a week, or you could go all in on a nice pair of sunglasses that will last for years if not decades.
  • Our favorite pair of sunglasses for women are the Under Armour Road Getaway Sunglasses because they have a classic look and a sturdy build.

Summer's just around the corner, which means it's time to bare your shoulders and your legs, but not your eyes. Even as you let the rest of your body soak up the sun, you'll want to be sure that the windows to your souls remain closely guarded, and that means buying a great pair of sunglasses for the sunny days to come.

Before you decide that the $5 pair of shades you found in the street stall will serve your purposes, you'll want to do a little bit more research about what it really takes to protect your eyes and help you look great all summer. While you don't have to spend a fortune in order to get quality sunglasses that provide adequate protection from the bright rays of the warmer seasons, you'll want to ensure that the glasses you ultimately select not only serve a fashionable purpose but a functional one as well. To that end, select shades with UV protection so that you can spend long summer days in the out of doors without worrying about damaging your retina.

You'll also want to get sunglasses that can withstand your fun in the sun. Be sure to select lenses that are scratch resistant. After all, you won't be able to see out of your protective eyewear if they're totally marred by evidence of all the good times you're having.

And unless you plan on buying a new pair of sunglasses every season (not that there's anything wrong with that), it'll probably behoove you to choose styles that are fun, yet timeless. While this isn't to say that you should shy away from new aesthetics, it will also be beneficial to have a pair of sunglasses that you'll love and use forever. The sun will always be there, after all.

Regardless of which of our favorite women's sunglasses you select, we're confident that your eyes will be well taken care of, and that you'll be in vogue all season long. You can also check out our top picks for the best men's sunglasses.

The best women’s sunglasses overall

Under Armour's Road Getaway Sunglasses help you see clearly and stay in place no matter what you're doing, all while being decidedly chic.

The best thing about buying sunglasses from a company dedicated to athletes? You know that these shades were built to perform. While Under Armour manufactures plenty of protective eyewear for fun in the sun, my favorite pair is undoubtedly the brand's new Road Getaway Sunglasses.

Whether you're engaging in a competitive game of beach volleyball or just lazily throwing around a ball on the beach, these newest Getaways keep your eyes safe while keeping you in vogue. The new Under Armour Tuned Road lenses offer contrast enhancement, which helps you see your surroundings more clearly even in the brightest of days.

The classic aviator frames are flattering on just about any face shape, but more importantly, the shades will keep your eyes shielded from 100% of the sun's harmful UVA/B/C rays. The lenses feature "multiflection" coatings, which means that even if you take a tumble on the sand or any other surface, you'll be guarded against scratches and smudges. Plus, the coating protects against intense sunlight, which means that you can wear these quite literally all day long.

Of course, if you're planning on keeping a pair of glasses on your face for hours on end, you'll need to make sure they're comfortable. While I often struggle with glasses staying on my nose (life can be so hard), this isn't the case with the Getaways. Because these shades come with an adjustable nosepad, you can effectively customize the fit of your shades, and make sure that they're resting comfortably all the livelong day.

Should you need to loan these sunglasses to a friend, she'll be able to adjust the glasses to her specifications as well. The arms of these shades are also quite flexible, so I've never had an issue with feeling as though the sidings were digging into my face.

All of Under Armour's products are clearly meant for performance, and its sunglasses are no exception to this rule. The Road Getaway sunglasses will keep you sharp no matter what summer or winter activity you may find yourself engaged in.

Pros: UA Tuned Road lenses provide great contrast enhancement, flattering frames, good sun ray protection, unisex

Cons: Adjusting the frames to get the perfect fit may take a little bit of trial and error

The best affordable sunglasses

MVMT offers a wide range of stylish, protective, and wallet-friendly sunglasses that will keep you in style and on budget.

You may know MVMT best for its line of simple yet sleek watches, but the brand has since taken its popular aesthetic to another accessory — sunglasses. MVMT began making sunglasses for the masses in 2016 and hasn't stopped since with its huge selection of creative and stylish lenses that are as varied as your moods.

The sunglasses themselves range in price from $60 to $90, though if you elect to add the polarized lens option, you could be looking at a top price of $105. Still, that's quite a reasonable price to be paying for sunglasses that look as though they could walk out of any designer shop without suffering from any sort of imposter syndrome.

Many of MVMT's sunglasses reflect the brand's commitment to timeless, classic pieces, like the Runaway shades — a simple aviator style with dark lenses. But the brand also offers up a few shades that are a bit more daring, like the Savage, a rectangular frame that comes with frames in a bronze gradient; or the Icon, a pair of sunglasses that look like they stepped right out of another decade, but somehow look fresh and original.

And best of all, if you're looking to recreate, say, the Dior So Real sunglasses look for about a quarter of the price, MVMT can help with Nightowl sunglasses. For $80, you can get a similar aesthetic in unique color schemes like Fuchsia Havana/Mauve Rose Gradient, or Clear/Silver Mirror Lenses.

With such a wide and varied set of options, the biggest challenge you're likely to face is narrowing down your selection to just a single pair of sunglasses.

Pros: Affordable, huge range, flirty frames, polarized lenses available, comfortable for all-day wear

Cons: Some buyers have complained that the nose pieces aren't particularly reliable or adjustable

Shop the MVMT sunglasses collection starting at $45

The best prescription sunglasses

You may know Warby Parker best for its direct-to-consumer prescription glasses, but the brand also makes killer prescription sunglasses.

Warby Parker has been making affordable eyewear since 2010, with most of its extensive collection setting customers back just $95. That's a reasonable price for any pair of shades, and if you want to add a prescription to those frames, you'll pay somewhere between $80 and $280 more, depending on the type of prescription.

When you shop at Warby Parker, you're able to place orders for up to five pairs of sunglasses (or regular glasses) in your cart and get them delivered to your doorstep so that you can try them out in the comfort of your own home. Shipping is free, and you'll have five days to decide which pair (or pairs) suit you best. Just send the samples back when you're done and order your prescription lenses for the pair(s) of your choosing.

All of Warby Parker's sunglasses feature anti-scratch and anti-glare coatings at no extra cost, which certainly will help you keep the sun at bay. I'm a particular fan of the Tilley, which incorporates just the right amount of retro chic into its aesthetic.

If you're not entirely sure of which sunglasses are best for you, Warby Parker has an online quiz that can help you figure out what sunglass shape works best with your visage. You'll answer questions about how you prefer your fit, what colors you like, and what materials you want to see in your frames.

Once you've gone through the questionnaire, Warby will recommend the frames that are most likely to tickle your fancy, and you can get them delivered.

If you're looking for a way to give back to your community through commerce, Warby Parker can help with its "Buy a Pair, Give a Pair" pledge. Just as the name suggests, with this program, Warby Parker will donate a pair of glasses to someone in need with every purchase of a pair of prescription glasses or sunglasses.

Pros: Affordable, online quiz helps determine the best frames for your face, free anti-glare and anti-scratch coatings

Cons: Prescription sunglasses may be costly depending on the severity of prescription (but they're still affordable when compared to other options)

best hair conditioner

  • Hair conditioner is a necessity if you want soft, silky strands.
  • Out of thousands of bottles, shoppers agree that Silk18 Argan Oil Hair Conditioner is the best — no matter your hair type.

I consider washing my hair the least inspiring part of my day.

Some people do their best thinking in the shower, but I basically treat it like an extension of sleep and space out while staring at the tiles. Finding the right conditioner didn't change that exactly, but it did elevate my shower experience to spa-like dimensions, and it gave me great hair in the process.

If you typically pick a conditioner by going to the hair aisle at your local drugstore and plucking something off the shelf with your eyes closed, it's time to introduce a more strategic approach. A good conditioner can transform your hair and extend the life of your latest style — take it from me, chronic haircut procrastinator. Better hair, better outlook on life, right?

Step one is to figure out your hair type and take it into consideration while shopping. Maybe you need a deep conditioner for extra moisture or something lighter that won't weigh down fine strands. If you don't know where to begin, ask your hairstylist for advice next time you get a trim. Or just take a look at this best-of-the-best list and let us do the hard work for you.

Here are the best hair conditioners you can buy in 2019:

The best conditioner overall

Silk18 Argan Oil Hair Conditioner is an Amazon bestseller formulated with silk amino acids and argan oil to treat a variety of concerns from scalp dryness to frizz.

Conditioner typically isn't one size fits all, but most hair types can benefit from a formula that nourishes strands, provides moisture, and cuts down on frizz. Silk18 Argan Oil Hair Conditioner certainly does all three.

Silk18 is the best-selling conditioner on Amazon and has a 4.3 out of 5-star rating based on more than 8,400 reviews. It's rare for people to get this amped about an everyday hair product. Sold by the brand Maple Holistics, Silk18 is made without sulfates, artificial fragrances, and dyes, so it's a great option if you're rigorous about avoiding those additives in your hair care.

What Silk18does contain is a cocktail of good-for-you ingredients like silk amino acids to help your hair retain moisture, jojoba and argan oils for hydration, and keratin to cut down on frizz. It's safe to use on color-treated strands and is recommended for most hair and skin types, including those with dry, sensitive scalps.

Buyers are not shy about publicly proclaiming their love for Silk18. One Amazon reviewer writes, "this product changed my life and hair... from frizzy, unruly, thick mane to silky, smoother and frizz-free hair."

Over on Influenster, where the conditioner boasts a 4.8 rating, a fan says, "My hair is curly and frizzy but this conditioner has calmed the frizz down during the humid summer months and made it manageable."

Pros: All-natural ingredients, works for many hair types, reviewers say it can also be used as a leave-in conditioner

Cons: Bottle is only 8 ounces

The best conditioner for curly hair

If you're fed up with other formulas leaving your curls lifeless, try revitalizing your hair with DevaCurl One Condition Original Daily Cream Conditioner.

I'll spend upwards of 10 minutes applying serums to my face every night, but I have no interest in putting that kind of effort into my hair.

Two things helped drastically cut down on the amount of time I spend fussing over my curls: getting haircuts with a stylist who actually understands my hair type and using DevaCurl One Condition Original Daily Cream Conditioner in the shower.

DevaCurl is pretty much the gold standard when it comes to styling curls, and the company has options tailor-made for every texture, from fine waves to course coils. I'm a fan of the original One Condition because it's hydrating, thanks to the olive oil in the formula, but not too heavy. It doesn't strip my hair of its essential moisture, but leaves my curls bouncy and well-defined while cutting down on knots and frizz.

As one Ulta reviewer puts it, "The conditioner actually moisturizes the hair shaft, instead of coating the hair in silicone giving the illusion of moisture."

I'm not a daily hair washer so I tend to use One Condition about three to four times per week, but it's certainly gentle enough to apply more often. It also has a light, lemony scent that I vastly prefer to some of the sugary sweet hair products out there. All in all, this is an ideal conditioner if your hair is recovering from years of heat-styling or, in my case, being shoved into a bun while still wet to fake a straighter texture.

Experts and shoppers agree that DevaCurl One Condition is a great option for those looking to embrace their natural waves. The conditioner was voted Favorite Daily Conditioner by Naturally Curly readers for the publication's Best of the Best Awards in 2016 and won the 2016 Editor's Choice Award for Best Multi Use Product.

Pros: Lightweight texture that's great for many curl types, cuts down on frizz and makes hair more manageable, doesn't strip hair of moisture

Cons: It might not be hydrating enough for very dry curls

Buy the 32oz DevaCurl One Condition Original Daily Cream Conditioner on Ulta for $46 (originally $44)

The best leave-in conditioner

Not into washing your hair on the daily? Refresh your style with It's a 10 Miracle Leave-In Plus Keratin.

Keratin treatments have been big for a while now (though you really need to know the science behind it and make sure the salon or treatment doesn't use formaldehyde), and it turns out that you can get some of the benefits without hitting the salon, thanks to products that boast keratin as part of their formulas.

First, a little bit about how keratin works: "Your hair is made up of keratin, so the treatment is putting the protein back into the hair, which is often lost due to age and chemical services," hairstylist Andrew Sprinkle explained to InStyle. In short, keratin is reparative, so it might be a good ingredient to look out for if your hair is damaged from over-processing.

It's a 10 Miracle Leave-in Plus Keratin is one of the most popular and highly-rated leave-in conditioners, with 4.8 stars on Ulta and 4.7 on Influenster. It works to smooth, strengthen, and protect hair of all types, thanks to ingredients like panthenol, sunflower seed extract, green tea leaf extract, silk amino acids, and citric acid. You might even say it's a miracle product, eh?

As an added bonus, it can actually help extend the life of a keratin treatment, so it's a money-saver as well! It's a favorite of professional stylist Kendall Dorsey, who told Allure, "This leave-in helps to detangle dry, damaged hair, as well as adding softness. It works for any texture." And one Ulta reviewer says, "This product is fantastic for over colored, overstyled hair!"

Pros: Multi-purpose, works for a variety of hair types, helps protect strands from environmental stressors

Cons: Hefty price tag, might feel a bit too heavy on ultra-fine textures

Buy It's a 10 Miracle Leave-in Plus Keratin on Ulta for $20.58

I drove a $48,000 Blazer to see if Chevy's revival of the classic SUV lives up to its reputation — here's the verdict (GM)

Chevy Blazer

The Chevy Blazer, like the Ford Bronco, is one of the original SUVs. The Blazer started life as little more than a pickup truck with a shell over its bed and some seats added.

By the time Chevy most recently retired the nameplate in 2005, the crude original had morphed into a modern SUV.

The revived Blazer bears little resemblance to its ancestors. The styling is downright flashy, and plenty of reviewers have noted similarities to the Chevy Camaro muscle car. Honestly, my first reaction to the $48,075 Blazer from the 2019 model year that Chevy let me borrow for a few days was, "Hmmm ... not sure I like all that exterior jazz. Isn't a Blazer supposed to get dirty and haul around a couple of dogs?"

If you read on, you'll find out what changed my tune.

FOLLOW US: On Facebook for more car and transportation content!

So here it is, the 2019 Chevy Blazer, with a "Red Hot" exterior, coming in at just over $48,000.

When I first saw the new Blazer in photos, I thought it looked kind of ... un-Blazer-ish.

That's because when I think Blazer, I think of the earlier versions (the last time a Blazer was sold in the US was 2005). This 1979 Blazer is effectively a 4x4 pickup truck with a topper and some seats.

Billionaires are increasingly becoming concentrated in a cluster of cities, according to Wealth-X's 2019 Billionaire Census report. The report analyzed data from Wealth-X's global database of more than one million records of the world's richest people.

According to its findings, nearly 30% of the world's billionaire population as of 2018 is concentrated in the 15 cities outlined below. The report also looked at how these billionaire populations grew or shrank compared to the previous year. Both country and city dynamics influenced wealth accumulation, according to the report.

Strong tech sectors are responsible for wealth accumulation in several cities, from San Francisco to Hangzhou and Shenzhen in China. A large share of the world's billionaire population reside in eastern Asia — six Eastern Asian cities made the list. However, billionaires in many of those cities were impacted by negative stock market movements, according to the report.

Note that the number of billionaires gained or lost marks the increase or decrease in each city's billionaire population from 2017 to 2018.

How to download maps on the Google Maps app for offline use

IMG_2409.PNG

  • Downloading Google Maps directions can be quite useful if you're going somewhere that doesn't have a stable internet connection, or if you're trying to curb your data usage.
  • You'll need foresight to get it done: You need an internet connection to download the map, but after that you're good to use Google Maps of specific areas offline.
  • The process may be slightly different for iPhone users than it is for Android users, depending on whether you use an actual address, or search for a more general location.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Where would we be without Google Maps? If you're on the road and you run into an area without internet, the answer might be: "I have no idea." Unless, that is, you manage to download a map of the area before losing your internet connection. It's an extremely useful aspect of the popular GPS app, especially for those traveling to unknown or new places by car.

But before relying on offline maps and setting off to your destination, you should be aware that you won't be able to download transit, biking, or walking directions when using downloaded directions. You also won't have access to things like traffic information, alternate routes, or lane guidance. And, in some regions, offline downloading isn't an option, due to things like contractual limitations and language support.

Downloaded maps will also take up storage space on your phone (the maximum required MB will display just before you attempt the download), so it's a good idea to double check that you have enough space to accommodate the new download.

Once you've downloaded a map, you don't need to do anything special to access it — just use Google Maps normally, and you'll be able to search or get directions within any area that you've downloaded a map for.

With all that in mind, here are the steps you'll need to take to download a map for offline use through an iOS or Android device:

How to download offline maps in the Google Maps app on an iPhone or iPad

iPhone and iPad users who are familiar with their Google Maps app should find the process of downloading a map relatively painless. Here's how to get started:

1. Open your Google maps app.

2. Double check that you're signed into your Google account and that you have an internet connection.

3. In the search bar, input the location you want to save, like "Portland," and search it.

IMG_2406.PNG

4. The map will scroll to show the location you searched, and a tab will appear at the bottom of the screen that repeats the address and offers a few options. Tap the name of the place and the address.

5. Tap the "More" button (three dots) at the top of the screen.

IMG_2407

6. Tap "Download offline map" and then select "Download."

How to download offline maps in the Google Maps app on Android

For the most part, downloading a map via the Android Google Maps app requires the same basic steps as you might find on an iPhone, with a few slight differences. Here's how you should proceed on an Android:

1. Open your Google Maps mobile app, and make sure you're logged into your Google account and have an internet connection.

2. In the search bar, input the location you want to save, and search it.

3. Tap "Directions," located in the bottom left corner — it will automatically use your current location as long as your Google Maps app has that permission enabled.

4. Swipe your finger from the far left side of the screen to open your menu (or tap the three lines in the upper left corner), then select "Offline maps."

SCREENSHOT GOOGLE MAPS OFFLINE 4

5. Tap "Select your own map." From this screen, you can also open your offline map settings, which features options like automatically updating offline maps, and automatically downloading offline maps and changing your downloading preferences to WiFi-only, to save on data usage.

6. Tap "Download."

Just before hitting the "Download" button, you can also zoom in or out to capture specific sections of your route. That's useful if there are certain unfamiliar spots you need to be able to refer back to in case you lose your internet connection.

Women spend 7 more years working than men and get no money or credit for it

Melinda Gates

  • Women spend seven more years on average performing household work than men, according to philanthropist Melinda Gates. While caregiving can be meaningful, male economists have overlooked unpaid household labor when measuring productive work.
  • Melinda Gates recently sat down with Business Insider US Editor-in-Chief Alyson Shontell to discuss the barriers to gender equality. Spending so much time caring for the home keeps women from furthering their education and income.
  • A key to solving gender inequality is dividing up unpaid labor equally among men and women, Gates said.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Melinda Gates has devoted much of her life's work to understanding the barriers to gender equality.

As head of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Gates brings education, family planning services and vaccines to the world's poorest women. She frequently speaks on how best to empower women and achieve gender equality, and she earned a Presidential Medal of Freedom for her efforts.

In her work, Gates noticed "unpaid labor" — or cooking, cleaning, childcare, and other household tasks — holds women back the most from achieving their dreams. On average, the time women spend performing unpaid labor amounts to seven more years than men. That's the time it takes to complete a bachelor's and master's degree.

While caregiving can be meaningful, Gates told Business Insider US Editor-in-Chief Alyson Shontell that male economists have overlooked unpaid household labor when accounting for productive work.

When female economist Marilyn Waring studied unpaid work in the 1980s, she found that it would be the biggest sector of the global economy — if only it counted.

Unpaid work would be the biggest sector of the global economy — if only it counted.

"Men won't easily give up a system in which half the world's population works for next to nothing, precisely because that half works for so little, it may have no energy left to fight for anything else," Waring wrote.

Paid work is what gives women greater independence, Gates notes in her book, "Moment of Lift." The time women spend tending to the home  holds them back from getting an education, earning income, becoming politically active, and socializing with others.

"I think it's far time we changed that and have the real conversation about this 90 minutes extra of work that women do at home in the United States [each week]," Gates told Business Insider.

Gates and her husband, Bill, have addressed unpaid labor in their own home.

The two agreed to divide up household chores, like washing the dishes, evenly among the family. Melinda noticed she spent 15 extra minutes clearing the table after dinner by herself. One day, hands on her hips, she told her family, "Nobody leaves the kitchen until I leave the kitchen!"

With the help of five people instead of one, the 15 minutes of cleaning Gates spent by herself turned into 5 minutes.

"I think we just have to sometimes name these extra invisible things that people don't even see that we do as women," Gates told Business Insider

How to zoom in and out on any Mac computer, using a keyboard or trackpad

$
0
0

apple macbook pro with touchbar

  • Making the switch from a PC to a Mac can feel inconvenient at times — even simple functions like zooming in and out have to be relearned, but once they are, they're easy to use.
  • Your Apple keyboard has standard shortcuts programmed into it for zooming in and out.
  • Those with a Mac trackpad can also use finger gestures to zoom in or out.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

For those just making the switch to a Mac, the functions and shortcuts can seem confusing, and even counterintuitive. (You'll probably be scrolling in the wrong direction for a bit.) That's because it's a much different experience than using a PC — it will take a little time to familiarize yourself with the various quirks, but once you do, it becomes second-nature.

For those interested in using the zoom function, here's what you need to know to zoom in and out using either a keyboard or a MacBook trackpad:

How to zoom in and out on a Mac using a keyboard

When zooming in and out using your Mac's keyboard, you will be able to move at intervals of 10%, and the option to reset (i.e. go back to the normal, or 100%, zoom level) will appear in a pop up at the top of the screen as soon as you do.

That's also where you'll see your current level of zoom, represented as a percentage.

SCREENSHOT ZOOM IN MAC 1

Here's how to zoom in or out in any applicable window:

1. Press the command button (located on either side of the space bar).

2. To zoom in: While holding down the command button, press the plus/equal sign ("+ =") button; it's located next to the delete button on the upper right side of the keyboard.

3. To zoom out: While holding down the command button, press the dash/underscore button ("- _"); it's located next to the "+ =" button on the upper right side of the keyboard.

To keep zooming in or out, continue holding down the command button while tapping the appropriate button (either the plus/equal sign button, to zoom in, or the dash/underscore button, to zoom out) as many times as is necessary to reach your desired level of zoom on the page.

How to zoom in and out on a MacBook trackpad

Those with a MacBook can still use the above method to zoom in and out, but the trackpad provides another, potentially easier, way to do it. It's also useful if your keyboard isn't fully functional. Here's what you need to do:

1. Place two fingers on the trackpad.

2. To zoom in: Drag your fingers away from each other, and release when you've gotten to the appropriate level of zoom.

3. To zoom out: Drag your fingers toward each other, similar to a pinching motion, then remove your fingers from the trackpad when you're happy with the level of zoom.

Macs come with a bevy of shortcuts and procedures for accomplishing various tasks. The key is familiarizing yourself with them and then consistently using them.

This is the very last chance to earn 100,000 bonus Marriott points by opening a new credit card

$

Business Insider may receive a commission from The Points Guy Affiliate Network if you apply for a credit card, but our reporting and recommendations are always independent and objective.

St. Regis Maldives

  • The 100,000 point sign-up bonus on Marriott's mainstream credit card, the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card, ends on May 16 (you have to spend $5,000 in the first three months to get the bonus).
  • It was originally supposed to end on May 2, but Marriott and Chase — which issues the card — extended the deadline by two weeks.
  • Read on for more details about this last-chance offer.

Marriott's newest mainstream rewards credit card — the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless — has been offering a limited-time sign-up bonus of 100,000 points when you spend $5,000 in your first three months.

Originally, this increased bonus was slated to end May 2. However, Marriott and Chase — which issues the card — decided to extend it for two weeks. After May 16th, though, it's gone, maybe for good. There's no official word on what the new bonus will be, but we'd speculate it will be 75,000 points after spending $3,000 in three months — just like the premium Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card.

Even though it has a lower annual fee than the Brilliant card which is firmly in the "premium" market at $450 per year, the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Card— which has a $95 annual fee — offers similarly valuable perks.

Here are some of the card's benefits.

The Bonvoy Boundless earns 6x points per dollar at Marriott hotels

The Bonvoy Boundless earns 6x points per dollar spent at participating Marriott hotels, and 2x points per dollar spent on everything else. That's the same as the premium Bonvoy Brilliant card, although that one also earns 3x points at US restaurants and on flights booked directly with the airline.

Every year, card members get a free anniversary night

The card also offers a free-night award each year on the card-member anniversary. That award can be used at any Marriott property that would normally cost up to 35,000 points per night.

While that award price cap rules out some top properties, there are still plenty of places where that award night can be used. The premium Bonvoy Brilliant card's anniversary night can be applied to hotels that cost up to 50,000 points per night.

Just opening a Boundless Card gets automatic elite status

Just by having an open Boundless Card, you'll automatically get Silver elite status in the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program.

Silver doesn't get you much, but it's still something — you'll get a 10% bonus on points earned, priority for late checkout, access to a dedicated customer service line, free Wi-Fi, and more. While it's not a published benefit, you may also be given preferential rooms.

If you spend $35,000 on the card in a given year, you'll earn Gold status instead. That gets you a 25% bonus on points earned, complimentary internet during stays, room upgrades based on availability, and a small gift of bonus points at check-in. You'll also automatically get 15 nights' worth of elite-qualifying credit each year, so you'll have an easier time achieving Gold status— or higher — with your normal stays. The Brilliant Card from AmEx comes with Gold status by default.

Bottom line: It's a good time to open a Marriott card

No matter which card is better for you — the mainstream Bonvoy Boundless Card from Chase, or the premium Bonvoy Brilliant card from AmEx — now is a great time for Marriott loyalists to open a new card.

But remember: These 100,000-point offers are only available for a limited time, so make sure to get them before they're gone!

18 retail startups that are using psychology, sustainability, and the internet age to reinvent how they package their products

wildist natural toothpaste deodorant 2

  • As the first and often fleeting interaction that a brand has with a potential customer, its packaging condenses the most important features of the brand and product into an easily digestible form.
  • Visual design has always been a key component of great packaging, but as our time spent online increases and tactile interaction with products decreases, brands are focusing even more heavily on what you see.
  • They're also considering sustainability and accessibility, values that modern shoppers have become less willing to compromise on.
  • The best packaging gives you a crash course about the brand, makes it easy and intuitive to use the product within, and does more good than harm for the environment. We found 18 retail startups making not only memorable products, but also memorable packaging.

In today's busy, cluttered world, brands have just a few seconds to make an impression. Fail to capture the ounce of attention that makes us linger in front of a product, and they've lost a potential customer.

Before you even touch the product itself, brands have the opportunity to draw you in with their packaging. If a product is a full-length novel, then its packaging is the condensed, SparkNotes version, helping you decide whether you want to investigate further and commit to a purchase.

Allen Adamson, an adjunct professor of marketing at NYU Stern and cofounder of consulting firm Metaforce says the purpose of packaging is to "simplify your brand story and value proposition into a telegraphic item," and that strong packaging design has become more relevant, but also more difficult, with the rise of online shopping.

Whereas brands only used to compete in physical store aisles, radio, and TV, they're now up against the vast choice of the internet.

To stand out, they need to tap into basic understandings of human behavior — while also breaking a few of these rules along the way.

Humans, by nature, are a fickle and simple bunch. We make snap judgments and rely heavily on just a few senses, most notably vision. "Above all, our visual system is primarily drawn to contrast. We process sensory information in relation to the context," says Dr. Matt Johnson, a professor at Hult International Business School whose research focuses on the psychology and neuroscience of consumer behavior.

"Contrast necessarily means that the competition's packaging needs to be taken into consideration...this is effectively the 'when everyone zigs, you zag' strategy."

Visually, this can mean new and interesting use of color, font, shape, and other features that aren't typical of the product category. The cheery purples and reds used by healthy food delivery service Hungryroot, for example, are a far cry from the green and brown earth tones of many other vegan brands.

innovative retail product packaging 20

Text and faces also get unique treatment. Johnson explains, "We actually have dedicated, specialized regions of the brain just for processing these types of stimuli. All things being equal, product packaging [that has] faces or easy-to-read text on it will draw in shoppers more so than packages that don't."

At the same time, we know that text, while helpful for educating the shopper, can sometimes overwhelm. Luckily, other factors can supplement packaging. Emily Page, CEO of product development agency Pearl Resources, says, "Online social platforms can educate more intensively in ways that brands can't in stores, minimizing the need for packaging to do all [the] education."

Her favorite example is Bulletproof: "Its packaging by itself doesn't (and couldn't) inform customers fast enough in a retail environment" about the brand's keto, high-performance ethos, but the founder's podcast did the talking so that customers could better recognize its minimalist packaging on a shelf.

The biggest disruption to packaging design is that many shoppers are now only looking at screens.

"In a 2-D environment," Adamson says, "you've lost that dimension of being able to pick it up and turn it around."

The loss of physical interaction makes things challenging for brands because of two important processes called encoding and the endowment effect, which Johnson describes below:

When we interact with something, it provides a boost to 'encoding' — the process by which the brain converts experiences into memories. We're much more likely to remember a package we interact with, as opposed to a package we simply looked at.

The longer we hold an object, the more we unconsciously feel like we own it. This leads to the endowment effect: We value an object more once we feel like we own it. And of course if we value it more, we're much likely to want to purchase it.

innovative retail product packaging 19

Online companies that offer try-before-you-buy options, like luxury jewelry brand AUrate or glasses brand Warby Parker, therefore, are on to something. With the chance to feel and inspect the product more closely and away from the distractions of other brands, you might feel a better connection and take a step towards purchase.

Overall, however, since most companies don't have this service, visuals do matter more than ever. They have to tell you about the brand in a clear, succinct, and interesting way, while also standing out from the visuals of competing brands.

But shoppers aren't only judging a book by its cover. They also want to know what the cover is made of.

"Packaging is increasingly the intersection of two major trends: e-commerce growth and concerns around climate change."

So says Mike Newman, CEO of Returnity, a company that custom-designs reusable shipping bags and boxes for brands like Rebag and ThredUp. He notes, "Consumers continue to increase their e-commerce spend. At the same time, they are more aware of and concerned about the resulting packaging waste, resource consumption, and climate change it creates."

While eco-friendly features like recyclable or compostable packaging "used to be a nice-to-have, it's now a must-have." If a brand over-packages today, they're "incredibly vulnerable to being seen as out of touch," according to Adamson.

innovative retail product packaging 21

For both companies and shoppers, the pressure to reduce environmental impact at the individual level can feel overwhelming. Small changes, including using eco-friendly packaging, are actually manageable and doable for most people. Beauty and food brands are at the helm of sustainable packaging innovations, from certified B Corps that sell their makeup in refillable compacts to chocolate truffles that come in compostable wrappers.

As online competition heats up and shoppers expect products and brands they buy to align with their values, packaging is adapting accordingly.

As has always been the case, product packaging should tell a story in a memorable way. Now, it's also counting factors like sustainability and accessibility into that story.

Below are 18 new brands doing cool things with their packaging

music unlimited free

  • Amazon Prime Day isn't until July, but you can get access to some amazing deals on the site right now.
  • Currently, Amazon Music Unlimited is offering new members access to tens of millions of songs for free for the first three months (regularly priced at $7.99 per month).

Amazon Prime Day might be a while away away, but Amazon is still dropping some major deals early on — including access to the premium streaming service, Amazon Music Unlimited, for free.

If you have an Echo device, you've probably asked Alexa to play a song for you. Somewhat frustratingly, you may have noticed that there's a distinct limit to what she can play on if you're not a member of Amazon Music Unlimited. As a consolation for your lack of membership, she generally offers a short sample of the song that cuts off just as you start getting into it.

If you'd like to avoid this happening again, it's worth considering a membership to Amazon Music Unlimited, especially right now. Though it'll usually run you a monthly fee of $7.99, Amazon is current offering new subscribers three months of access to the service for free.

And it's not just on your Echo devices that you can listen to the millions of songs on the platform. Similar to Spotify, you can listen commercial-free on pretty much any device — from your computer to your tablet to your phone — via an app that curates personalized listening channels and playlists for every mood.

Free Amazon Music Unlimited access only going on for a limited time, so new members should take advantage of the deal before the offer is over. Once the promotion ends, you can either cancel your membership or continue to pay the full $7.99 rate.

best body oil

  • Body oils can provide hours and hours of soft, nourished skin that feels like you just left a fancy spa treatment.
  • But not all are the same — some can sit on top of your skin as opposed to absorbing in, others can feel too oily.
  • But we've done all the research to bring you our favorite picks. If you're looking for smooth, supple skin that doesn't feel oily to the touch, then the Fresh Life Body Oil is the bottle you want to reach for.

While it's normal to associate dry skin with the winter, those with truly chapped skin know it can happen 365 days a year.

And if you're someone who seems to be constantly slathering on body lotions, you're probably wondering if there's a better way to soothe your scaly skin. Instead of constantly replenishing your lotion supply you might want to consider another hydrator — a body oil.

Body oils are clutch for folks whose chapped skin is a serious problem year-round because of the way they moisturize. Instead of thick creams that just tend to sit on top of the skin, oils penetrate and absorb easily because they're nice and light. A lot of oils also have the added benefit of mimicking your body's barrier layer, helping your skin to protect itself from dehydration more naturally. And that's all without having to wait around for it to soak in — something anyone who has ever coated their limbs in thick lotion while it's warm out can tell you is a very unpleasant experience.

My favorite way to use a body oil is immediately after a shower — before I even step out of it. I turn off the shower, tap the excess water into my skin, and then reach for my favorite oil. I'll then massage it into my skin, starting from my neck and working my way down, until I'm totally coated in the stuff. The steam and my still-moist skin help the oils absorb better, which means I leave the shower feeling moisturized and not uber-slick.

This technique also has the added benefit of cutting my morning routine down. Since my moisturizing is happening in the shower, I don't have to deal with rubbing myself down after I'm toweled-off. And if you're not ready to fully part with your lotions, you can always spike your favorite creams with a few drops of oil to amp up the moisturizing properties. The oil will ensure your skin stays more hydrated for longer, which is a bonus no matter what month of the year it is.

Ready to start oiling yourself up for maximum hydration?  I've rounded up the best body oils you can buy. They're perfect for anyone — whether you're looking for an alternative to your lotion, hoping for a little extra hydration, or just searching for a more sensory experience when it comes to your moisturizer. Get ready to oil yourself up.

Here are the best body oils you can buy in 2019:

The best body oil overall

Fresh Life Body Oil makes skin feel like butter but without any of the slippery, greasy feeling. It also hydrates for up to 24 hours and has a subtle floral, nutty scent.

When I say this body oil gave me life, it's not hyperbole — it's fact. My shins, arms, knees, and elbows are constantly drier than Death Valley (and even more so in the winter), but one application of this oil made everything smooth, moisturized, and frankly, not painful to the touch.

Made with sweet almond and jojoba oils to moisturize, vitamin E to hydrate and soothe irritated skin, and spiked with a whole host of other oils and botanical extracts, my skin is seriously glowing every time I use this body oil. The vitamin E also provide antioxidant benefits for healthier skin over time.

But despite the heavy lifting, the oil doesn't actually feel heavy on skin at all. In fact, it absorbs into skin quickly and doesn't leave behind a greasy feeling. That seems to be a constant among Fresh's body oils — fellow author Maria del Russo loved that our OG overall pick ofFresh Sugar Ultra-Nourishing Body Oil also absorbed into her skin in seconds, but it's out of stock at most retailers now and I find the Fresh Life Body Oil to be a more-than-suitable replacement.

Don't take it from me though — one Nordstrom reviewer said she's had "hit and miss luck with body oils, but this one is a winner." Some reviewers do mention that the scent is so subtle that it's almost gone a few seconds after you use it. I didn't find that issue, but I can see why — the scent really is quite subtle, so once you get used to it, it can seem like it's disappeared.

As for the application itself, it can get a little messy — after all, it's a body oil in a pour bottle. One reviewer ingeniously decants some into a spray bottle to use, but honestly, it's not a big deal to me. I just use any oil that might've dripped down the side on my body and call it a day. — Jada Wong

Pros: Fast-absorbing, smells delicious, a little goes a long way

Cons: The bottle spout isn't the most mindfully designed, so things can get a little messy while pouring

The best all natural body oil

One of the benefits of switching to oils is that a lot of them harness all-natural ingredients, and the Jao Goe Oil is our top pick in that category.

One of the beauties of oils is that they are much easier to create using all-natural products than typical creams and moisturizers are. That's why so many people who prefer organically-created products tend to moisturize their bodies with oils. In fact, oils were the main way that folks in ancient Rome and Egypt kept their skin silky smooth. And if Jao Goe Oil were around then, I'm sure that's the oil they would have reached for.

Goe Oil is a cult product for many reasons, but mostly because of how multi-use it is. Peruse the reviews on Amazon, where the oil has an average rating of 4.1 out of 5, and you'll see reviewers extolling how well the oil moisturizes the body. Reviewers also say it's fantastic for smoothing out frizzled hair, moisturizing brittle nails, and healing cracked or chapped hands.

This tube is formulated with a high concentration of jojoba oil, a powerful moisturizer that is also incredibly healing. It acts similarly to sebum, which is your body's natural way of moisturizing your hair and nails. By mimicking your body's natural moisturizing capabilities, you get hydration that is smooth and natural, not slick and sticky. But jojoba isn't the only powerhouse oil in Goe Oil. The bottle is actually formulated with 28 different fruit, flower, and plant oils and butters.

Another thing that makes Jao Goe Oil such a favorite amongst beauty editors, pros, and buyers alike is that it is the least messy oil you can use. It actually dispenses from its tube in a semi-solid balm, only to liquify once you warm it up in your hands. It's similar to pure coconut oil in that way — the mix of heedy oils coagulate into something semi-solid when cool. That means you aren't spilling goop all over the place, trying to hydrate yourself. It also means that you can easily take Goe Oil on the road and reapply as needed.

But don't just take my word for it. Over on Nordstrom, one reviewer commented that "this is the ONLY product that I can put on in the morning and rely on it keeping my skin hydrated all day long." If your limbs get extra-dry, then consider smoothing on Jao Goe Oil.

Pros: All-natural ingredients, balm consistency makes it easy to apply

Cons: Pricey, only available at certain retailers

The best body oil that's not oily

If you're constantly struggling with ultra-dry skin, reach for Herbivore's Jasmine Glowing Hydration Body Oil

One of the biggest misconceptions about body oils is that they leave your skin feeling like, well, an oil slick. It makes sense why people might assume that. Oils get a bad wrap for being extra greasy. A lot of people are fearful that, after applying an oil, they'll be left to sit around naked until it completely absorbs — lest they get their clothes or sheets oily.

So when I first applied Herbivore's Jasmine Glowing Hydration Body Oil, I was floored. Instead of the gloopy, ultra-thick consistency I'm used to with body oils, I was greeted with a dry oil. Herbivore's Jasmine Glowing Hydration Body Oil is light and non-greasy, making it easier for it to absorb into the skin. I was able to smooth the oil on, and 30 seconds later, my skin was hydrated without the slick I'm used to.

Just because it isn't sticky doesn't mean it isn't working. The oil has glowing reviews across websites, including Sephora, where one reviewer said that she "cannot get enough of this body oil." Folks with sensitive skin praise the oil's ability to hydrate without causing breakouts, which can be attributed to the grapeseed oil. Grapeseed oil actually contains twice as much vitamin E as olive oil, making it an amazing antioxidant cocktail for your skin.

The jasmine sambac oil is what makes this one shine. The amazing smell of the oil is sexy without being overly floral, and many pros and buyers have commented that this oil has actually replaced their regular perfumes. But jasmine sambac also helps support your skin's natural moisture levels and elasticity.

Herbivore's oil also wins where other oils like it fail — with its bottle. Having relied on a spray nozzle for years, Herbivore's Jasmine Glowing Hydration Oil now dispenses with a pump. I've found that just two pumps is good enough to cover each limb, meaning a little of this stuff goes a long way. It's definitely not cheap, but this oil will last a long, long time.

Pros: Jasmine sambac oil promotes elasticity, isn't as greasy as most oil-based moisturizers

Cons: Some find the smell overpowering

Diversifying your income streams can have massive payoff.

While Jordan is best known for playing basketball, his income can be traced back to more than his salary. His endorsements with brands such as Gatorade, Upper Deck and Hanes brought in a substantial amount of money while he was playing. After retiring, Jordan continued to branch out and acquire new revenue sources.

In fact, it wasn't until 2014, 15 years after he retired, that he achieved billionaire status.

A secondary income source can become more valuable than your primary income source.

Forbes reported that in 2015, Jordan raked in $100 million from his deals with brands such as Nike in a single year. For comparison, that far exceeds the $94 million Jordan collectively made over his 15-year career from his playing salary.

And there's no reason to limit yourself to just one or two "side hustles."

Previous reporting from Business Insider shows that Jordan has a plethora of side projects. He owns multiple restaurants, including one in Florida and two in Chicago. Jordan also owns a North Carolina Nissan dealership. He recently began investing in e-sports.

5. Clicking "Edit" next to any of the above options will allow you to turn notifications on or off for a particular element of the Facebook site or mobile app. In this way, Facebook allows you to enable or disable notifications for individual apps and plugins on its site so that you can still receive an alert for the updates you're most interested in.

6. Note that Facebook's notification controls are very specific and that going through every option may be somewhat time-consuming as you will be changing options for specific features individually rather than all games, apps, or tags as a group.
