best american express card

  • Although the credit card and rewards space has become a bit crowded, American Express remains a popular and prestigious company, offering compelling and competitive products.
  • The Platinum Card® from American Express is the best product offered, since its generous yearly benefits almost fully offset the annual fee. Plus, it has useful perks, and solid rewards on flights.
  • For example, I got more than $2,000 of value from the card my first year.
  • If the Platinum Card's annual fee is a deal-breaker, your best choice is the American Express® Gold Card.

American Express offers credit and charge card products for just about every lifestyle need. Although American Express is famous for its travel connections and premium experiential offerings, it also offers credit and charge card products with other advantages. Whether you're looking for cash back, frequent flyer miles, travel insurance, purchase protections, extra points on groceries, access to airport lounges, or more.

If you're looking for the best Amex card for you, here are the ones you should consider.

Keep in mind that, unless it's otherwise noted in the card description, we're focusing on benefits, perks, and rewards that make these cards great options, not things like interest rates and late fees, which can far outweigh the value of any rewards.

When you're working to earn credit-card rewards, it's important to practice financial discipline, like paying your balances off in full each month, making payments on time, and not spending more than you can afford to pay back — or spending more than you would otherwise. Basically, with a few rare exceptions, you should treat your credit card like a debit card.

Here are our top picks for the best Amex cards:

Updated on 5/7/2019 by David Slotnick: Added the latest information about card offerings and APRs, including the AmEx Gold and Blue Cash Preferred.

Read on in the slides below to see which Amex card is right for you.

The best Amex overall

Why you'll love it: The Platinum Card offers incredibly valuable benefits, perks, and rewards, and is a must-have for any frequent traveler.

Welcome offer: 60,000 points (after spending $5,000 in the first three months)

At $550, the Platinum Card has one of the highest annual fees of any mainstream card. However, as long as you're willing to float it up front, you can get way more value back from the card — for instance, I got more than $2,000 in value from it during my first year.

The Platinum Card earns American Express Membership Rewards. These points can be redeemed for travel, merchandise, or more. However, the best option is to transfer them to a frequent flyer partner.

The card offers 5x points per dollar spent on flights booked directly with the airline, as well as flights and pre-paid hotels booked through Amex Travel. It earns 1x point on everything else. It also offers up to $200 in Uber credits each cardmember year, as well as up to $200 in airline credits each calendar year — if you open the card mid-year, it's possible to earn that twice in your first cardmember year.

The card comes with a number of perks, including access to more than 1,200 airport lounges within the Priority Pass network, as well as Delta Sky Clubs and proprietary American Express Centurion Lounges. It also offers complimentary Gold elite status with Marriott and Hilton hotels, as well as up to $100 per year in shopping credits at Saks Fifth Avenue, access to special events, and other perks at hotels.

The annual fee may turn a lot of people off from this card, but if you can get past that, the return it offers is tough to beat.

Pros: Valuable perks, useful benefits, possible to get outsized value

Cons: High annual fee — even though you can make it back, and more, you'll still have to float that at first

The best AmEx for dining rewards

Why you'll love it: The Amex Gold Card has a lower annual fee than the Platinum Card, but it offers stellar rewards on dining and groceries and solid benefits.

Welcome offer: 35,000 Membership Rewards points when you spend $2,000 in the first three months.

Last October, American Express launched a massive reboot of its Premier Rewards Gold card, or "PRG," rebranding it as the American Express Gold Card, releasing a new metal design, and totally overhauling the rewards and benefits on the card.

Right now, this is arguably the best card available for dining, unless you're only interested in cash back, rather than potentially more valuable rewards points, and unless you find yourself abroad at restaurants often.

The new Gold Card earns 4x points at US restaurants and on up to $25,000 per year at US supermarkets (and 1x point after that), 3x points on flights booked directly with the airline, and 1x point on everything else. Based on the fact that you can easily redeem Membership Rewards points for more than 1¢ of value each, that makes this the highest-earning card for everything food-related.

Like the old PRG, the Gold Card offers a $100 airline fee credit each calendar year, and adds up to $120 of dining credits — split into $10 each month — at Grubhub, Seamless, The Cheesecake Factory, Ruth's Steak House, or participating Shake Shack locations.

New card members — those who haven't previously had the Premier Rewards Gold — can earn a welcome bonus of 35,000 points when they spend $2,000 in the first three months.

While it's difficult to assign an exact value to Membership Rewards points, The Points Guy subjectively estimates each point as worth 2¢. That makes the welcome bonus worth $700. Even without factoring in the annual credit benefits, that's more than enough to make up for the card's $250 annual fee.

Check out our full review for more details.

Keep in mind that it's possible to be targeted for a higher welcome bonus.

Pros: Stellar rewards on dining and groceries, useful benefits, lower annual fee than the Platinum Card.

Cons: Relatively high annual fee compared to some other cards.

The best Amex for families

Why you'll love it: The EveryDay Preferred earns bonus points at US grocery stores and gas stations, making it a strong product for families and others who spend a lot in these categories.

Welcome offer: 15,000 points (after spending $1,000 in the first three months)

The EveryDay Preferred is a strong option for anyone looking for a Membership Rewards card, but who's not interested in a premium card like the Platinum or PRG. It also has a strong points-earning scheme and a lower annual fee of $95.

The card earns 3x points per dollar spent at US supermarkets (up to $6,000 each year — 1x point per dollar after that), 2x points at US gas stations, and 1x point on everything else. You can also get 2x points on reservations made through Amex Travel.

Best of all, if you make 30 or more purchases in a billing period, you'll earn a 50% bonus. That means that those little $3 and $4 charges for things like coffee or a snack can help you get a ton of points quickly.

The card also offers a 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for the first 12 months, before switching to a variable 15.24–26.24% APR. If you have a big purchase coming up and want some time to pay it off, but don't want to pay interest fees, this is a great option.

Pros: Low annual fee, strong rewards structure, earns valuable points, 50% bonus when you make at least 30 transactions in a billing period

Cons: Relatively low welcome offer

How to remove a Google account from your Android or iOS device

Google IO 2019

  • Removing a Google account from your Android or iOS device can help you streamline things, but there are potential consequences to be aware of first.
  • Those with an Android can easily accomplish remove their account, but they'll need a certain level of familiarity with their settings first.
  • The steps iOS users need to take depend on how they access their Google accounts.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Information overload can happen so quickly nowadays — and sometimes, you just need to streamline things to achieve peace of mind. Removing a Google account from your device can help accomplish this. But it's important to know what that means, and what the repercussions are, before going through with it.

For starters, removing an account is not the same as deleting it. Removing a Google account from an Android or iPhone device simply removes access from that particular device, and it can be restored later on. However, any information stored through the account on that device will be lost. That includes things like email, contacts, and settings.

So it's a good idea to back your device up before removing an account from an Android or iPhone.

With that in mind, here's how to remove a Google account for those with an Android or iOS device:

How to remove a Google account from an Android phone

Android phone users can easily remove a given account from their device. Here's how:

1. Open your phone settings.

SCREENSHOT REMOVE GOOGLE ACCOUNT 1

2. Tap on "Accounts" (it may also be listed as "Users and Accounts," depending on your device).

SCREENSHOT REMOVE GOOGLE ACCOUNT 2

3. Tap the account you want to remove and then click "Remove Account."

SCREENSHOT REMOVE GOOGLE ACCOUNT 3

If you're trying to remove the only Google account from your Android device, you'll have to also enter your device's pattern, password or pin to get it done. Removing all your accounts will also mean you won't have access to the Google Play Store.

And keep in mind that settings can vary from device to device, so you may have to do a bit of digging to get to the right screens. But once you do, it should still be a quick and easy process.

How to remove a Google account from an iOS device

The steps necessary to remove your account from an iOS device depend on how you access that account (via the Gmail app, Safari app, or Mail app, for instance).

If you use the Gmail app, here's how to remove your Google account:

1. Open the Gmail app.

2. Select the menu (three stacked lines), then select "Manage Accounts" followed by "Edit."

3. Tap "Remove" next to the account you want gone, and confirm your choice.

4. Select "Done" on the top left.

For those who access their Google account through the Safari app, here's how to remove your account from your iOS device:

1. Open the Safari app.

2. Go to google.com.

3. Tap your profile icon in the top right corner and then tap "Sign out" (if you aren't already).

4. Tap "Sign in," and then tap "Sign in with a different account."

5. Tap "Remove," select the account you want to remove from the device, and select "Done."

If you've added your Google account to your device's settings for use with the iPhone's native Mail app, here's how to remove that account:

1. Open your Settings app.

2. Scroll down to the "Passwords & Accounts" section and open it.

3. You'll see a list of all the accounts, both Google and non-Google, that you've added to your device. Tap on the one you want to delete.

IMG_2401

4. This will bring you to a page of options. Tap "Delete account" at the bottom of the page, and then "Delete from My iPhone" in the warning that appears.

IMG_2402

You should also be aware that if you choose to remove all Google accounts from your iOS device, you'll be automatically signed out of your Google accounts on that device.

I swapped out my $1,449 iPhone for Google's new $479 Pixel phone, and it proved that phones don't have to be so expensive (GOOG, AAPL)

0

Google Pixel 3a XL

  • Google's Pixel 3a is a less expensive version of Google's Pixel 3 smartphone. It costs $399 while the larger model starts at $479.
  • I switched to the $479 Google Pixel 3a XL from Apple's most expensive iPhone, and found that it on important characteristics like battery life and camera performance.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

When Apple debuted theiPhone X in 2017, it set a few new precedents. Yes, it introduced technologies like facial recognition to the masses, but it also raised the bar in terms of how much the average smartphone costs.

The iPhone X was Apple's first iPhone to start at $1,000, a price that the company has since carried over to its 2018 lineup. The iPhone XS starts at $999 while the larger iPhone XS Max starts at $1,099. Apple also offers a cheaper model called the iPhone XR that starts at $749.

It didn't take long for other smartphone makers to follow suit. While the base models for Samsung's Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S9 both started at around $700 when they launched, the Galaxy S10 starts at $899. Google's smartphones too have increased in price. The Pixel 2 started at $649 when it was released in 2017, while the Pixel 3 started at $799.

That trend, however, has made it more difficult for tech firms to convince consumers to upgrade to the latest smartphone models each year. Worldwide smartphone sales declined by 6.6% year-over-year in the first quarter of 2019, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC).

Now, Google hopes to combat this downturn with less expensive versions of its Pixel smartphones: the $399 Pixel 3a and the $479 Pixel 3a XL. Both phones are designed to recreate the Pixel 3 experience but in a less expensive package.

I switched from Apple's top-of-the-line iPhone, the $1,449 iPhone XS Max that comes with 512GB of storage, to Google's $479 Pixel 3A XL. Here's a closer look at Google's new phone and what that experience was like.

How the Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL compare to Google's more expensive smartphones

Google Pixel 3a XL

Like their more expensive siblings, the Pixel 3a and 3a XL come with a 12.2-megapixel dual-pixel camera with an aperture of f/1.8. They also support features like the Pixel 3's Night Sight camera mode, high-resolution zooming, and Portrait Mode.

Where you'll really notice the difference between Google's new phones and the Pixel 3 and 3 XL are in their design. The Pixel 3a and 3a XL are made of a polycarbonate material while the more expensive models are constructed from aluminum and glass.

The new phones also lack features like wireless charging, an edge-to-edge screen, and facial recognition. They also run on a less powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 processor, unlike the Pixel 3 which is powered by the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset as phones like the Galaxy Note 9 and LG G7 ThinQ. Like Google's pricier Pixel phones, the new models offer Pixel-exclusive features like Call Screen and Google's Titan M security module.

While they both feature OLED screens, a rare find on budget devices, their screens pack fewer pixels per inch than those found on the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL. They also slightly differ in size, with the Pixel 3a featuring a 5.6-inch display compared to the Pixel 3's 5.5-inch screen. The Pixel 3a XL, meanwhile, features a 6-inch screen versus the Pixel 3 XL's 6.3-inch display.

What it's like to switch from the iPhone XS Max

iPhone XS Max

The iPhone XS Max comes with the top-of-the-line features you'd expect from a flagship smartphone, such as Apple's Face ID facial recognition technology and the company's latest A12 Bionic processor and neural engine.

Unlike the Pixel 3a, the iPhone XS Max comes with two rear 12-megapixel cameras, a larger 6.5-inch borderless screen with a 2,688 x 1242 resolution that's sharper than the Pixel 3a XL's 2160 x 1080 display, and a glass and metal body. The priciest iPhone variant also comes with 512GB of storage, while my Pixel 3a XL only offers 64GB.

Battery Life and Camera

But these discrepancies didn't bother me much, especially given the difference in price. That's because the Pixel 3a XL delivered in two critical areas: camera performance and battery life. The Pixel 3a XL's 3,700 mAh battery was able to get me through a full day of usage and until 5 p.m. the next day on a single charge.

That's on par with the battery performance I typically get from smartphones that are much more expensive than $479. Plus, the Pixel 3a XL comes with an 18-watt charger that supports fast charging, while Apple charges extra for this accessory.

The Pixel 3a XL's 12.2- megapixel camera is capable of taking rich, colorful photos, and functions particularly well in low-light circumstances thanks to Google's Night Sight feature. In a side-by-side comparison with the iPhone Xs Max, the Pixel 3a XL using Night Sight blew the iPhone XS Max away when capturing photos in a dim environment. See the sample shot below.

iPhone XS Max

Low Light iPhone Xs Max

Google Pixel 3a XL

Night Sight Google Pixel 3a XL

When shooting in regular daylight circumstances, the Pixel 3A XL proved to be a worthy rival to the iPhone XS Max. The iPhone's photo seemed a bit brighter than the Pixel's, but the image taken on Google's phone was slightly more detailed.

iPhone XS Max

Flower Taken With iPhone XS Max

Google Pixel 3a XL

Flower Taken With Pixel 3a XL

While the Pixel 3a XL offers impressive zooming capabilities for a budget phone with a single lens camera, the iPhone XS Max's dual lens setup offer a closer and slightly crisper zoom. I did, however, prefer the Pixel 3a XL's Portrait Mode photo over the iPhone XS Max's even though it looks a bit more processed.

iPhone XS Max

iPhone Xs Max Portrait Mode

Display and Performance

The Pixel 3a XL's screen rendered crisp details and bold colors whether I was browsing photos or streaming video. There were some instances in which I thought the Pixel 3 XL's screen looked more colorful than the iPhone XS Max's, but in other circumstances I thought the Google's screen looked dull next to Apple's. I was viewing content on the Pixel 3a XL in its default state, but Google includes settings to optimize how the display looks through its Natural and Boosted color modes. Regardless, the screen is more than satisfactory given the Pixel 3a XL's price, and the fact that it's even comparable at all to the iPhone XS Max's screen is noteworthy.

Google's new smartphones don't support facial recognition, but its rear-mounted fingerprint sensor was just as convenient and responsive. I never found myself resorting to typing in my passcode to unlock my phone, although it did occasionally require me to press my finger on the scanner more than once before it would successfully read my print. That being said, I have the same experience with Apple's Face ID on occasion.

One area in which I did notice a difference between Google's phone and Apple's was in performance. While this wasn't evident in most everyday tasks, I did notice a bit of lag when I was playing "Shadowgun Legends." Apple's iPhone XS Max, by comparison, was able to run the game seamlessly with no hiccups. The game was definitely playable on the Google Pixel 3a XL, but it just didn't feel as buttery smooth as it did on the iPhone. I also noticed that the Pixel 3a XL's camera doesn't launch as quickly as the iPhone's.

Google Maps in Augmented Reality

Google is also equipping its Pixel phones with another special feature not found on other devices including the iPhone: Google Maps in augmented reality. I got to try an early version of this feature on the Pixel 3a XL, which uses the device's camera to overlay directions over the real world environment as you're walking.

That means I was able to see exactly where to turn and and which direction to walk in without having to watch the little blue dot on the map move along with my steps. It certainly seems like one of the more practical use cases for augmented reality, even though the app isn't finalized yet.

Google Maps AR

Google warns you not to hold the phone in your field of view while walking when using Google Maps in augmented reality, as doing so can be dangerous. As such, I would typically hold up the phone to see which direction to walk in, then place it in my pocket until I need to view the next step. Google Maps automatically switches back to augmented reality mode when you hold the phone up, and I found that this worked without a hitch in my experience.

Conclusion

Google Pixel 3a XL

The Google Pixel 3a is a new addition to the company's smartphone lineup, but it feels like a return to Google's roots in the smartphone space. Everything from the look and feel of it to its low price and clean Google software reminded me of Google's Nexus devices. Nexus is the smartphone brand Google used to develop in partnership with Android device makers like HTC and LG. The company phased out its Nexus line once it started launching Pixel phones in 2016, but Nexus phones were known for typically being less expensive than flagship offerings from companies like Samsung.

There are always going to be fundamental differences when it comes to switching between the iOS and Android platforms. But in terms of the core functionality each device offers, like photography, battery life, performance, and display quality, the Pixel 3a is proof that you don't need to pay $1,000 to purchase a capable smartphone.

The Pixel 3a may not be perfect — it's performance isn't as fast as what you'd get with a pricey flagship and it lacks features like wireless charging, and facial recognition. But even with these compromises, the Pixel 3a delivers where it counts.

9 unexpected Mother's Day gifts that are exceptionally useful

0

Insider Picks writes about products and services to help you navigate when shopping online. Insider Inc. receives a commission from our affiliate partners when you buy through our links, but our reporting and recommendations are always independent and objective.

seedsheet mother's day

  • Due to the lack of free time, sleep, and requirements of baby proofing, moms with young kids often can't enjoy gifts traditionally associated with Mother's Day like candles and flowers.
  • As a husband to a mom, I've learned that gifts that can help a mom navigate busy days with ease and comfort can bring more pleasure than gifts that call for a break in the routine.
  • And since young kids tend to be ever present, items that are safe to have around the house make great gifts too because they don't add to what a parent already worries about.

It's ironic that for the first few years of motherhood, moms can't really enjoy many of the gifts so commonly associated with Mother's Day.

The lack of me-time, constant fatigue that comes with 24/7 parenting, and destructive and demanding nature of little kids render many potential gifts poor choices. The open flame of a candle isn't a wise idea around a preschooler, that vase of thorny roses is almost sure to be upset by a toddler, and no mom wants to wake up with even the mildest hangover when there's a baby to care for, so that bottle of G.H. Mumm Champagne might be more of a tease than a nightcap this year.

So what to give a mom caring for young kids this Mother's Day? In short, anything that will make her life easier. Anything that provides added comfort, efficiency, or removes a challenge presented by childcare will be a welcome gift. And if you can gift an evening of babysitting and an appointment for a massage, she'll definitely appreciate that too.

This list was actually inspired by gifts I've given my wife in the past six years (we have a five- and one- year-old) that were actual hits. While I've used these ideas for a couple of Mother's Days as well as birthdays, holidays, and so on, every one of them was a hit precisely because it made her life as a parent that much easier and more enjoyable — and because all of them are kid-safe, too.

Also, it goes without saying that chocolate is a requisite for all occasions — or no occasion at all.

Read on to find the best Mother's Day gifts for moms with young kids:

Comfortable shoes

Get a pair of Columbia Caldorado III Trail Running Shoes from Columbia.com for $120

Get a pair of Hush Puppies Cyra Catelyn Chukka Boots from Nordstrom.com for $69.96

Get a pair of PUMA Muse Metallic Sneakers from PUMA.com for $80

Some of the best gifts I've given my wife in the past few years have been comfortable, versatile shoes. She's on the move for most of her waking hours — especially now that our second kid is up on her own two feet and walking faster every day.

For the active mom who jogs or goes for long walks pushing a stroller or with a kid in a carrier, go with trail runners. Columbia's Caldorado III Trail Running Shoe ($120) is comfortable on concrete sidewalks, and gives plenty of grip and support on grass, gravel, or of course, on actual trails.

The Hush Puppies Cyra Catelyn Chukka Boot ($69.96) is a great option if she wants a more stylish shoe. They're comfortable from the very first wear with no break-in period and the suede has a coating that helps shed water and resist dirt, so she won't have to worry about getting them dirty too fast.

And for the mom who wants a casual sneaker that's a blend of both sporty and stylish, PUMA's Muse Metallic Sneakers ($80) works with jeans, yoga pants, or shorts alike. They're just funky enough to catch the eye and comfortable enough for hours of wear.

A super compact stroller

Get an Ergo Metro Compact City Stroller from Amazon for $299.99

Chances are the mom for whom you're shopping for already has a stroller (or three), but she probably doesn't have one that's this small. The Ergo Metro Compact City Stroller ($299.99) weighs just 14 pounds and folds down into a package measuring 20.5 inches by 17.3 inches by 9.1 inches. That's smaller than most carry-on suitcases (so, yes, it fits in most airline overhead bins) and lightweight enough for easy one-handed carrying.

The stroller runs smoothly and is easy to maneuver over sidewalks and around the mall, and it has a decent sized storage bin under the seat, which is surprising given how overall small the stroller is. The seat reclines and has generous padding, and the large canopy provides a lot of sun protection.

An easy-to-wear dress

Get a Richer Poorer Tee Dress from Richer-Poorer.com for $56

Get a Richer Poorer Tank Dress from Richer-Poorer.com for $52

When a mom has a crying baby in one arm, a preschooler's breakfast in the other, and about 10 minutes left to get herself dressed and out the door with the kids in tow, having a go-to dress is a beautiful thing.

Richer Poorer makes what could be called elevated basic apparel — the garments are simple but stylish and well-made, and best of all, but reasonably-priced.

Two dresses in particular — the Tee Dress (a T-shirt dress) and the Tank Dress (yes, you figured it out) — cost $56 and $52 respectively, come in multiple colors, and will never be out of style. Add a light jacket in spring or fall, or go with sandals in the summer, and the guesswork is all done.

'Do Google Pixel phones have a headphone jack?': Here's what you need to know about each model, including the new Pixel 3a

0
0

Google Pixel 3

  • While the original Google Pixel had a headphone jack, neither the Pixel 2 nor the Pixel 3 have one.
  • The new Google Pixel 3a phones follow the original Pixel in again featuring a headphone jack, however.
  • Both the Pixel 2 and 3 models come with an adapter that allows users to use standard headphones, connected through the charging port.
  • Wireless headphones provide an alternative for those times when the device's charging port is already in use.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

The tech world has a way of cannibalizing itself: Trends become standards, and progress is made. Apple was the first to announce that it would forego the headphone jack in favor of a wireless future — despite pushback from iPhone users due to the ubiquity of the jack and the fact that removing it entirely meant removing their ability to choose what sort of headphones to use.

Apple's announcement came months before the original Google Pixel, which features a standard headphone jack, made its debut on the phone market in October 2016. Samsung responded to Apple's move with criticism — before doing a sharp course-correction and removing the jack from some of their phone models as well.

So what about Google's newer phones? While thePixel 2 and 3 notably lacked a headphone jack, the newly announced Google Pixel 3a phones follow in the path of the original Pixel by featuring one.

The new Google Pixel 3a phones have a headphone jack

In contrast to the Google Pixel 2 and 3, which lacked a headphone jack, the newly announced Google Pixel 3a features a headphone jack on top of the phone.

That means Pixel 3a owners, like owners of the original Pixel, will be able to use wired headphones without the go-between of a USB-C dongle adapter, as depicted below for the Pixel 2 and 3.

Read more:Google just announced its cheaper Pixel 3a phones — here's how they compare to the Pixel 3

Google Pixel 2 and 3 models do not have a headphone jack

In keeping with the industry trend at the time, both the Pixel 2 and Pixel 3 foregoed the headphone jack that the original Pixel featured, instead featuring a single USB-C audio port. The phones do, however, also come with a 3.55mm headphone jack adapter, or dongle, which fits most existing headphones. The adaptor itself is about 3.5 inches long, which can make use a bit awkward.

Google Pixel 2 Dongle 3

If for some reason you don't have the adaptor, Google sells the piece for $12, and you can find other options online. But, if you have a Pixel 2, be sure to get an adaptor with a built-in Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC), otherwise it may not work properly.

Compared to the Pixel 2, the third generation does make strides toward a better headphone situation for users: The Pixel 3 comes with a pair of compatible (though not wireless) earbuds, removing the issue of the dongle when in use. So Google may be learning from the backlash it faced in the move to eliminate the headphone jack and is even taking steps to minimize it — even as it continually lurches forward.

Alternative options for Pixel 2 and 3 phones

If you aren't interested in the more cumbersome adaptor setup, or you just want a way to be able to listen to your phone while it's hooked up to the charger, you can opt to use wireless headphones instead.

The Pixel 2 and 3 are both compatible with bluetooth-enabled devices, so it would simply be a matter of pairing the headphones with your phone.

One wireless-headphone option is Google's own Pixel Buds, which cost $159 when bought through the company, although cheaper options can easily be found elsewhere. Or, if you prefer a wired-in situation, sans dongle, you could instead buy headphones with a USB-C port-compatible hookup.

How to change the email address associated with your Facebook account

Facebook logos

As the most popular social media network of all time, pretty much everyone is on Facebook these days. What started as a site for American university students — many of us remember when you had to have a valid .edu email address in order to sign up for the site — has become a site connecting more than 2.3 billion people worldwide as of early 2019.

Pretty much every part of your Facebook experience can be customized, including the email address you associate with your account. Your email account is used both to log into Facebook and to allow other users to locate you, should you allow that option in your privacy settings.

If you lose access to the email account associated with Facebook or simply wish to change your Facebook account to connect with a different email address altogether, doing so is a quick and easy process.

How to change your email address on Facebook via a desktop computer

1. In your internet browser, navigate and log into Facebook using your current email address and password.

2. Once logged in, click the downward facing arrow in the upper right-hand corner of your screen to reveal a drop-down list of options. Towards the bottom of the list, click on "Settings."

Facebook desktop 1

3. Under your general account settings, you'll see a section for contact information, in which your primary email address is listed. Click on "edit" next to your email address to be taken to a screen which gives you the option to add an additional email address or phone number. Click on that button to launch a pop-up in which you can input your new email address.

Facebook desktop 2

4. After inputting your new email address and hitting the enter key on your keyboard, you'll be asked to re-enter your current Facebook password to confirm the changes. Once you've completed this security step, Facebook will send you a verification email containing a link that you must click on to prove that it is a valid email address that you own.

Facebook desktop 4

5. Once you click on the confirmation email validating your new address, Facebook will automatically set your newly entered email address as your primary contact. This can be changed anytime by following the above steps again to enter a new address, or by selecting your old one as your primary form of contact.

How to change your email address on Facebook via the Facebook mobile app

1. From your phone's home screen, locate and tap the Facebook app icon to open it.

2. Once in the Facebook app, locate the three stacked horizontal lines in the lower right hand corner of the screen and tap them to open a list of menu options.

3. Scroll down to locate the "Settings & Privacy" option and tap it to reveal a sub-menu of additional account settings.

IMG_6497.PNG

4. Tapping the "Settings" option under the "Settings & Privacy" bar will take you to a new screen which features your account information, including your payment settings, your preferred language, and your personal information — including your email address. Click on "Personal Information."

IMG_6498

5. On the personal information screen, you should click on the "Email address" section to be taken to a screen in which you can add or remove email addresses associated with your account.

6. Click on "Add Email Address" to enter the new email address you want to add to your account. After typing it in, hit "Add email address." You will then be sent a confirmation email which contains a link you must click in order to prove that you are the owner of the account in question.

7. Once you click on the confirmation email validating your new address, Facebook will automatically set your newly entered email address as your primary contact. This can be changed anytime by following the above steps again to enter a new address, or by selecting your old one as your primary form of contact.

Google is building parental controls into Android that will let you limit how much time your kids spend on each app (GOOGL, GOOG)

Google IO 2019

  • Google is adding parental control features to Android, the company announced at its I/O developer conference Tuesday.
  • The company previously offered such features as a standalone app called Family Link.
  • Android Q, the next version of the operating system, will ship with the Family Link features built into its settings app.
  • Google will also add a new feature that will allow parents to set limits on their kids' use of particular apps.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Google is building parental controls directly into the next version of its Android operating system.

The company plans to take Family Link, a standalone app it launched two years ago to help parents manage their kids' phone use, and incorporate it into the settings function of Android Q, the next iteration of the operating system, Stephanie Cuthbertson, Google's senior director of Android, said Tuesday. Instead of having to download the app through the Google Play store, users will be able to go into their device's settings and set limits on their kids' phone activity or review apps they want to install.

"For 84% of us parents, technology use by our kids is a top concern," Cuthbertson said as she made the announcement at the company's annual I/O developer conference in Mountain View, California.

Read this: Everything Google announced at its biggest conference of the year

Consumers could previously use the Family Link app on both Android phones and Apple iPhones to set limits for kids using Android devices. Through the app, parents could monitor how much time their children were on their phones, designate a bedtime when they could no longer use their device each day, and approve or block apps they want to install. They'll be able to do those same things in Q, but without having to download a separate app.

But even as it's adding Family Link into Android, Google is adding some new features to it. Parents will be able to set time limits on their kids' use of specific apps, such as Snapchat or Instagram. And they'll be able to tap a button to grant their kids a few minutes of "bonus time," if they've reached their limits.

Both Google and Apple have been increasingly focusing on such well-being features in the wake of criticism from researchers and advocates, including former Google engineer Tristan Harris. Harris in particular has chided tech companies for trying to extract more and more attention from consumers.

These $150 Bluetooth headphones have an AI personal trainer built into them — here's how they help me with my fitness plan and keep me motivated during workouts

VI

  • Vi is the voice-activated, AI personal trainer that lives in the Vi Sense Headphones ($143) by LifeBeam, experts in AI wearables.
  • Vi is like a smart workout buddy, helping you to customize a plan to reach your workout goals, guiding you through workouts, and tracking progress along the way.
  • I've been using Vi and am impressed at how smart this technology is. Here's what it's like to use.

Workout buddies are great. They motivate you and keep you accountable, pushing you to finish that last mile or tough it out for the last few seconds of a strenuous wall sit.

Most days, I just want a workout buddy who will encourage me, push me to work harder, and simultaneously be okay with the fact that I probably don't really want to talk much while I'm exercising. Given those criteria, my ideal workout buddy sounds more like a personal trainer. But, considering that a single session with a personal trainer can run me about $100 an hour, that scenario sounds a little less ideal.

My solution? Vi.

She's a voice-activated, AI-powered personal trainer that lives in the Vi Sense Wireless Headphones, and she's been helping me improve my fitness routine.

The tech specs

The Vi Sense Wireless Headphones have an ergonomic design, with a thick and flexible neckband that stays in place while you move. The headphones also come with a range of ear gel and in-ear fin sizes to ensure your earbuds fit comfortably and are stable even during vigorous activity. There's also a USB cable for charging and a nice mesh carry case for taking Vi on the go.

Embedded in the headphone are sensors, which help Vi hear your voice and gauge your heart rate, elevation, and motion activity — all things she uses to improve your workout experience.

A single charge should get you eight hours of use in training mode. When you're not training, you can still use the headphones to listen to music and make hands-free calls. The sound quality while listening to music is solid, which is to be expected considering the earbuds themselves are powered by Harman/Kardon sound. Further, these headphones are made for whatever your workout may bring, so don't worry about getting them sweaty.

It's also worth noting that Vi was created by LifeBeam, a company whose AI wearables have been used by NASA and the US Air Force.

visense

Getting started with Vi

The set-up process is quick and intuitive.

Turn on the Vi Sense headphonesthey should be pre-charged straight out of the box. You could use these as normal Bluetooth headphones at this point, but what makes these worth the cost is the integration of Vi, so download the connected app. Once the Vi app is downloaded and headphones are powered on, go into the Bluetooth settings on your phone to pair them up.

To start off, Vi needs to know your name. Choose to have her address you by your real name or choose from the selection of nicknames — I went with "boss" because ... why not. Vi will then ask you to divulge some personal information (age, weight, height, gender, etc.) as well as your current fitness level and fitness goals. Your fitness IQ beginner, intermediate, or advanced — will help inform Vi about your first round of workouts. So will your fitness goal, which you can choose from the following selection: weight loss, improve fitness, maintain fitness, reduce stress, go faster, or improve running.

I chose improve fitness — it seemed the most mild out of all of the choices. Good news is, if you have a change of heart you can change your personal information or fitness goals at any time in the app. And, after all of your information is entered, Vi will take your heart rate using the sensors in the headphones.

While this might seem like a long process, it was actually very quick and easy.

Running with Vi

I woke up ready for a morning run with Vi. Based on my answers from the night before, there was a training plan ready and waiting for me. First up was "follow your heart," a level two interval run that includes an 18 minute run, 4 minute cooldown, and about 2.3 miles' distance.

If you don't love the workout options in your training plan, you can create your own workout (by choosing a desired distance or time) or select a different option from the workout library which includes workouts for running outdoors or on the treadmill, cycling, and walking. My workout looked good to me, so I hit the start button and waited for Vi to tell me what to do.

VI

She told me to get moving, so I did. As we ran together, Vi told me when to slow down or speed up and gave me advanced notice before sprints so I could mentally prepare. She offered me plenty of words of encouragement, reminding me to push my hardest when I only had a few minutes left. Personally, I liked the heavy feedback — I found it to be a welcome distraction from my otherwise steady stream of music — but if you want less, you can control Vi's chattiness in settings.

And, when Vi speaks, she doesn't completely stop the music — one of my major qualms with most guided workout apps. In fact, Vi is compatible with Spotify, so you can listen to your own playlists while Vi guides you through your runs. Or, you can choose to turn music on within the app for a custom mixtape of run-ready tracks. You can even ask Vi questions while you run; just tap the right earbud.

Twenty-five minutes with Vi flew by. I was surprised by how motivated I was by a guide that wasn't physically running with me. But Vi's witty commentary, lighthearted yet encouraging tone, and desire (however artificial) to help me improve make it feel like I had a real personal trainer along on my run.

Bottom line

Some may find $143 to be too much for a pair of headphones. Nit hen you consider that cost not only includes the high-quality tech, but also a year's worth of personalized workouts, $143 actually seems like a steal. Unlike many other apps that provide workout routines, Vi doesn't get stale. She gets to know you (and more importantly, your running style) so she can customize workouts that actually challenge you.

After the first 12 months, the app will run you $9.99 a month. But again, considering that a single session with a personal trainer could close to $100, $120 for a whole year of custom workouts, and a voice to actually convince you to do them, doesn't sound so bad.

Vi may not be for everyone, but if you want the motivation and accountability of a personal trainer without the premium price tag, these headphones are a pretty great choice. You have a 90 day guarantee, so if you don't like running with Vi, you can send your pair back, no questions asked. As for me, I'm going to keep running with my new workout buddy. We already have a date for tomorrow.

The best checked luggage you can buy

Insider Picks writes about products and services to help you navigate when shopping online. Insider Inc. receives a commission from our affiliate partners when you buy through our links, but our reporting and recommendations are always independent and objective.

best luggage

  • Traveling doesn't have to be a hassle. Having a great suitcase can be the difference between an amazing trip and a bad one.
  • After much research and testing, we found that the Travelpro Maxlite 4 Expandable Rollaboard is the best piece of checked luggage you can buy for long trips.

I love almost everything about traveling — that includes hanging out in the airport. Yep, you read that correctly. Long lines, hectic check-ins, overstuffed airplanes — they don't really bother me because I'm usually giddy about getting away. But I do dislike packing.

Mostly that's because I can't decide what to bring. But sometimes it's because of my suitcase. I admit that I've been embarrassed once or twice at the baggage carousel by stepping up and pulling off that suitcase. I've also cursed out a suitcase several times — once when I was zig-zagging through crowds at Heathrow desperately trying to catch my flight home and one wheel snapped right off.

There are, of course, many other things that can go awry with your luggage. Sometimes the airline misplaces it, or the zipper breaks as you are headed out the door, or you arrive home to find that your carefully-wrapped souvenirs have been smashed to smithereens. And who among us hasn't, at some point, wondered if your non-locking suitcase was rifled through — did I leave that new scarf in the hotel room or did someone take it?

Buying the right piece of luggage can help eliminate or at least lessen the chance that you will encounter many of these problems. There are thousands of different brands and styles of luggage to choose from. No one suitcase is right for everybody. It depends on many factors including how frequently you travel, what you are packing, and your budget.

We've done all the research to find the best pieces of checked luggage you can buy for long-haul trips where even the best carry-on bag just doesn't cut it.

Here are our picks for the best checked luggage you can buy:

The best luggage overall

The Travelpro Maxlite 4 Expandable Rollaboard 26-inch Luggage is lightweight, affordable, and the top choice for the airline pros.

Travelpro invented rolling luggage when founder and pilot Bob Plath got tired of carrying his bags through busy airports. The company has been well-known for innovation ever since. The Travelpro Maxlite 4 Expandable Rollaboard 26-inch Luggage may not be the snazziest piece of luggage on the baggage carousel, but this durable, easy-to-use polyester piece is lightweight at 5.6 pounds and very affordable with its sale price of around $100.

The Maxlite 4 comes in black or blue, and if you buy the 29-inch option, you get a few more colors, including red and purple (a smaller 22-inch version is also available). The two high performance, ball-bearing in-line wheels, with protective crash guards last a long time and help you navigate many surfaces. The expandable handle has two stops: 38-inches and an extra-tall 42.5-inches, so you can roll it along at any height. Unzipping hidden compartments expands the storage space to suit your needs.

The Maxlite 4 has a limited lifetime warranty, so you should be covered if anything happens to your bag. User reviews on Amazon are mostly positive, with many verified purchasers touting the lightweight and simple, yet sturdy suitcase.

"This is a great suitcase," wrote one reviewer in May 2016. "I am pretty sure this suitcase is at least 5-7lbs lighter than our broken one and when traveling with two kids, those 5-7lbs can make a huge difference." Adds another consumer in March 2017: "What a great suitcase —travel pro quality for a low cost. I travel internationally at least 6 times per year. This suitcase stands up to the abuse, with excellent zippers, wheels, and hardware. Rolls real smoothly too!"

Around the web, professional reviewers, including those from Outdoor Gear Lab, Apartment Therapy, and Luggage on Tour give the Travelpro Maxlite 4 high marks.

The best hard case checked luggage

The Delsey Helium Aero 25-inch Luggage is an affordably-priced, hard-shell standout that's constructed with high-end materials.

The Delsey Helium Aero 25-inch Luggage is a highly rated suitcase, made by the respected French company Delsey. It is constructed out of 100 percent lightweight polycarbonate with a glossy finish. To be clear: most luggage in this price range is made of a flimsier ABS-polycarbonate blend.

Available in four colors, including black, brushed charcoal, emerald green, purple, and titanium; this luggage relies on four twin spinner wheels that roll in all directions and put no weight on your hands. The sturdy, ergonomic comfort grip handle is composed of industrial-grade aluminum and snaps up and down with the push of a button.

The simple interior has two basic compartments: one with straps to secure your clothes, and another with a mesh bag ideal for laundry. A zipper-based expansion system can provide an extra two inches of packing space. Finally, the three-dial combination lock, approved by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), keeps your belongings safe.

User Reviews on Amazon are highly positive, with verified users singing the praises of this durable, lightweight luggage. "We love them. Sturdy. Well made - exterior and interior. Plenty of room. No complaints. Recommend," wrote one reviewer in June 2017.

Around the web, professional reviewers, including those from Wirecutter, Best Reviews, and Luggage On Tour recommend this durable piece as an exceptionally good buy.

Pros: Lightweight, durable, affordable, dent-resistant

Cons: Easily shows dirt/dust, hard-to-read numbers on the wheel locks

The best high-end luggage

The Briggs & Riley Baseline Large Expandable Spinner Luggage (28 inch) is well crafted, expands to suit your needs, and boasts a lifetime guarantee.

The Briggs & Riley Baseline Large Expandable Spinner Luggage is one of the best checked bags you can have with you on your many trips around the globe. The shell on this sturdy bag has a unique composition of 95 percent nylon, three percent aluminum, and two percent rubber. But it is the ballistic nylon that keeps it moisture and dirt-free.

Four durable double swivel wheels make it easy to navigate the bag anywhere, no matter how much you have packed into it, and you can pack a lot. The huge interior is perfect for long trips. The company's patented CX expansion-compression technology increases the space inside the luggage up to 26 percent by simply pulling on a lever. One push will compress the suitcase back down to its original size.

Briggs & Riley, a Long Island, New York-based company founded in 1993, is well-known for its "Simple as That" Lifetime Guarantee. Not only will the company repair your bag free of charge if it is ever broken or damaged, but it will do so even if the problem was caused by an airline. You don't have to show proof of purchase or even that you are the bag's original owner.

User reviews on Amazon are mostly positive with verified purchasers raving about the lifetime guarantee and the ease of use. "These spinner bags roll around so easily you'd think NASA made the wheels. It honestly saves a tremendous amount of physical stress on one's legs, back and arms compared to the older 2-wheel roller bags," wrote one reviewer in August 2016. "It combines innovative design with sturdiness and the guarantee of lifetime repair," wrote another reviewer in June 2016.

Around the web professional reviewers, including those from Wirecutter and Outdoor Gear Lab, give the bag high marks. In fact, Wirecutter calls the Baseline Large Expandable Spinner, "The most satisfying packing experience money can buy."

Pros: Very sturdy, user-friendly and unique features, lifetime warranty

Cons: Expensive, heavy

An experienced CEO says there's one question all managers should ask themselves every day — especially when things go wrong

0

Nick Mehta

  • Nick Mehta is the CEO of Gainsight, a customer success software company with more than 600 employees.
  • In this op-ed, he says that if you're a manager, a leader, or especially a CEO, there's a fundamental question you need to ask yourself: Are you giving your team everything they need to succeed?
  • Rather than making excuses for why things don't work, leaders should embrace 'servant leadership' and work to empower their teams from the bottom up.
  • To do that, listen more than you speak, and remind your team members often about their purpose.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Have you heard of the Red Eye Coefficient? It's the value that shows the relationship between the speed of a company's growth and the number of red-eye flights the CEO must take. As the CEO of a fast-growth company, I've banked some serious air miles while most of the country has been sleeping.

I simultaneously dread red-eye flights and revel in them. They can be exhausting and brutal, but they've also led to some of the most profound moments of my life. There's something about being at the end of your mental and physical rope and being all alone with your laptop that can bring out the inspiration in you. I wanted to share one red-eye realization I recently had that speaks to a big problem I see with CEOs and leaders.

As I leaned on the cold window of seat 9F trying to sleep, I ended up in a recursive loop of memories of all times I was told to act more "businesslike," to be "less emotional," and to "show more poise." I know I'm not the only one. Since probably forever (or at least the Industrial Revolution), people have been told to leave their emotions at the door when there's a job to do. That the biggest barrier to their success is their feelings. Never let them see you sweat. Don't show any sign of vulnerability, or people will pounce on it. The only thing that matters is the company's bottom line. And all too often we hear "it's not personal, it's business" when it comes to making hard decisions. CEOs speak with lay-off euphemisms like "cutting the fat" and "tightening our belts" to morally justify firings as "better for the long run."

The big question

But if you're a manager, a leader, or especially a CEO, there's a question you need to ask yourself. It's fundamentally a question about what it means to lead, and I'd love for you to answer as objectively as you can: Are you giving your team everything they need to succeed?

The role of a leader isn't to tell people what to do, it's to give them the resources they need to thrive. Unfortunately, when things don't go right, too many leaders look everywhere but the mirror for where to place blame.

Rather than making excuses for why things don't work or why hard decisions must be made, leaders should embrace servant leadership, working to empower their teams from the bottom up as opposed to driving them.

But what does this mean practically? What are you actually supposed to do? There are four prongs to a servant leadership approach that you can start doing today:

1. Be the change you want to see in others

I have a really hard time expecting of others what I don't of myself. If I want people to admit mistakes, I need to as well. If I want people to learn, I need to model that behavior. To give me a routine around this, I send a detailed email to the entire company every week sharing what I learned in the last week. I try to share publicly mistakes that I've made any time I get a chance.

2. Appreciate those who are setting the example

It's not just about me. I've learned to try to encourage other leaders to be vulnerable in their presentations and communications and then I always try to reinforce the behavior by commending them on their openness. At this point, each manager at Gainsight has a unique way of showing their true self.

Read more: The 11 words a manager can say to drastically improve an employee's professional life aren't used nearly enough, says a 30-year tech exec

3. Remind your team of their purpose

We tend to (mistakenly) believe the reason we come to work every day is a paycheck. But if you've read Daniel Pink's book "Drive," you'll know that people are much more motivated by Mastery, Autonomy, and Purpose. A lot of companies have programmatic approaches to driving Mastery and Autonomy, but not Purpose. I take every opportunity to infuse our company purpose into our strategy as well as into everyday conversations. If you're not already doing this, in every communication you should remind everyone, from your employees to your customers, of their purpose.

4. Listen

This is such an old adage that it's cliché. But I love the adage, "Listen to understand, not to respond." So when I meet with teammates to get feedback, I try to ready myself to soak it in and be gracious versus coming back with a debate or even with a solution. I also think powerful questions can help spur discussion. I ask new teammates "what's better about Gainsight than advertised? What's harder than advertised?"

Does being a human-first leader mean you don't make tough decisions? Of course not. From time to time, you're going to have to do things that don't feel great. As a CEO, sometimes even small decisions can have a huge impact (good or bad) on real human beings. But I ask myself this all the time: Am I causing pain for others in the interest of a "rational" decision? If I am, I better be feeling that pain myself many times over — or I've lost my humanity. That pain is a precious signal, reminding us to keep humans first in our decision calculus.

How to change your Facebook username, and help others better identify your profile or page

0

facebook on laptop

  • You can change your Facebook username for a profile or page in a few quick steps, but once it's changed, you can never go back to a previous one.
  • Your Facebook username is not the same as your Facebook display name, which is the name that appears on your posts and when you're tagged.
  • A Facebook username appears in the URL of your Facebook account and helps others find you on the social media platform, and it creates a unique, direct link to your Facebook page.
  • If you manage Facebook pages for a business, nonprofit, band, or any other purpose, you can help people find the page with a thoughtfully created username.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Unlike the name that displays on your Facebook page — your display name, in other words — a Facebook username operates relatively unseen in the background. Facebook usernames are designed to help users find the people or pages they seek among the billions of profiles and Facebook pages that amount to this massive social media platform.

And when you create a link that uses your Facebook username, you can send it along to anyone, letting them immediately find your profile or page. Facebook usernames help cut through the clutter of all those many names.

Think of it like this: finding the Facebook account of your new friend John Smith is like finding a needle in a haystack in a field full of haystacks. Finding the Facebook page of John.Smith.314159 is going to be a bit easier. Especially if John has sent you the link to www.facebook.com/john.smith.314159.

Facebook automatically assigns a username when you create an account, and it's likely nothing inspired, just your name and a bunch of numbers.

If you want to change your Facebook username, or change the username of a Facebook page you manage, do it with care: once you change your current username, you can't go back to a previous one, as each unique username can only be used once.

How to set or change a Facebook username on a profile

1. Log into your Facebook account on a desktop computer and click the dark blue triangle at the top-right of the page.

2. Click the word "Settings" from the dropdown menu.

3. On the next page, on the row that reads "Username" and displays your current username, click "Edit."

use

4. Enter your new desired username (if it's unavailable, a red X will appear along with a message saying "Username is not available").

How to set or change a Facebook username on a page

1. Click the "About" section on the left side of your page.

2. Select the "Edit" option next to the section for your page's username.

3. Type in your desired username, and if it's available, click "Create username."

Your new usernames are now set, and any previous username you used is unavailable to anyone, including you.

NOW WATCH: Elon Musk's biggest challenge won't be Tesla or SpaceX — here's why

Janji makes running and workout clothes that support clean water initiatives around the world — here's what they're like

Janji running apparel

  • Janji is a Boston-based running apparel brand with a mission: working to bring awareness and provide aid to communities that lack access to clean water.
  • Its men's and women's collections are inspired by the cultures, textiles, and colors found in countries affected by the global water crisis. Janji donates 5% of every sale to clean water initiatives in those countries.
  • It's new Spring/Summer 2019 collection is inspired by Cambodia. I tried a few pieces from the men's collection, as well as the older Bolivia collection, and found them to be great for working out, running, and wearing casually.
  • While some of the styles are more expensive than comparable pieces from sportswear giants, the quality is better — and it supports a great cause.

Water: It's the foundation of life as we know it, and essential to our survival. Still, even as the most vital resource on earth, many of us take it for granted.

What should be treated as a sacred gift from the planet we share is often thought to be infinite and always on tap for everyone. We take hour-long showers as a de-stresser, flush toilets after every single use no matter what, and toss half-finished water bottles because event venues rather we spend money inside. These wasteful luxuries illustrate just how privileged, and perhaps unaware, we really are.

Even if it doesn't affect your life on a daily basis (or ever), access to clean water is an issue that millions of people all over the world face. While one organization can't solve the problem on its own, a startup called Janji is doing its part to bring awareness and provide aid to the crisis through an unconventional method: running.

Janji

Janji creates collections of running apparel for men and women that are inspired by countries affected by the global water crisis, and then donates 5% of proceeds to clean water initiatives in those countries.

We first wrote about the Boston-based running apparel brand last year when it released its Uganda collection. Now, the brand is back with a new collection for Spring/Summer 2019. This time, Janji landed on Cambodia, a former Communist nation that's steadily growing and improving its infrastructure, as the subject of the collection.

I got to try some of the men's styles from the newest collection and talk to its founders about how they're using running to make positive changes around the world, why they chose Cambodia for its latest collection, and what initiatives the new collection specifically supports.

If you're more interested in learning about Janji's products than the story behind them, you can scroll down to my review of the clothes themselves towards the bottom of this post. Otherwise, you can keep reading to learn more about Janji's mission.

Why running?

Running is a universal sport. It has the ability to break down cultural barriers to unite athletes from all over the world. Unfortunately, a lack of clean water, which is essential to hydration, can keep athletes in impoverished areas from reaching their full performance potential or from simply running for the love of the sport.

Runners at heart, Janji founders David Spandorfer and Mike Burnstein wanted to change that for other runners and anyone else that need clean water.

"Running can help you explore, connect, and to really create substantial change — be it in yourself or in the world around you," Spandorfer told Business Insider. "Running is something that most of us can do, it's something that can forge connections, and we think it's the single best way to see the world."

Janji

Taking inspiration from and providing aid to Cambodia

Once Janji selects a country to design a collection around, it works hard to highlight that country's triumphs, beauty, and culture through its designs. "We chose to work with Cambodia because of its rich heritage and inspiration," said Spandorfer. It's a country with a fantastic art scene, vibrant cities, and beautiful parks. The country has been growing since the dark days of the Khmer Rouge, but still has unexplored areas that venture off the beaten path."

In Cambodia specifically, Janji has partnered with Clear Cambodia, a non-governmental organization that works to improve the health of rural Cambodian communities through increased access to clean water, sanitation facilities, and hygiene education.

"Clear Cambodia is making a massive difference across Cambodia using BioSand filtration systems, resulting in clean, pathogen-free water at a low cost," Burnstein told Business Insider. "It's exciting to think of the impact Janji's community can have through our partnership with the organization."

The brand's principles alone are commendable, but after wearing a few pieces from the new Cambodia collection and the previous Bolivia collection, I can say that Janji is more than just a good cause. I found the crewneck sweatshirt, shorts, and T-shirt I tried to all be comfortable and of great quality.

Circuit Crew Pullover

Circuit Crew Pullover, $88, available in three colors

Of the three pieces I tried from Janji, the Circuit Crew Pullover was my favorite. It's a distinctly sporty runner's garment, but it has a style that's fitting for casual wear, too. The sweatshirt is made from the brand's proprietary HI-2-Low knit, a fabric made from a blend of cotton, recycled polyester, and elastane for stretch.

My favorite part about the sweater is the large side pocket for travel. A lot of sportswear brands try to incorporate storage compartments, but very few have one large enough for a passport or, at least, more than a pair of headphones. I found it large enough to hold my large iPhone Xs Max and my car keys when I was at the gym. Features like this and the reflective logos on the back are also a clear indication that the piece is designed with the traveling runner in mind.

I also love that the crewneck is able to tell part of Cambodia's story through the color. The haze color, in particular, is a washed-out green that's inspired by the usually misty skies over the Angkor temples.

Runpaca Short Sleeve

Runpaca Short Sleeve, $54, available in four colors

The Runpaca T-shirt is one of Janji's best-selling designs — and the new Cambodia collection got a special-edition treatment. Inspired by Southeast Asian Batik textiles, this Runpaca features a hand-painted dot print that symbolizes raindrops.

The shirt itself is made from soft Pima cotton and hypo-allergenic, odor-resistant alpaca fleece. The blend of materials is naturally moisture wicking and temperature regulating and provides a comfortable next-to-skin feel. Some T-shirts have a rough, slightly abrasive or itchy feeling that can become increasingly uncomfortable with movement, but that is not the case here. My workouts consist of some running and lifting and I was comfortable the entire time.

The garment isn't pre-shrunk, so you should be careful with washing it in hot water or drying it. It's best to use cool to cold water and lay it flat to dry.

7-Inch Chiller Shorts

7-Inch Chiller Shorts, $64

I decided to go with the 7-inch Chiller Shorts from the Bolivia collection because they're a bit longer than the other versions in the Cambodia collection. While $64 seems like a lot for shorts, I think they're well worth it.

They come with built-in boxer brief liners that have hidden quad pockets on each side. The design is comfortable, useful, and eliminated two issues for me — having to readjust my underwear and shorts after each movement and having to worry about stuff falling out of my pockets while working out.

While people who typically work out in the gym can easily lock their belongings in their car or in a locker, they'll serve a greater purpose for outdoor runners who need to carry essential items like a phone, wallet, and keys.

Many traditional VCs are hesitant to buy into cannabis startups, but these investors are taking the plunge

  • Traditional venture capital firms are starting to show interest in cannabis startups, according to Casa Verde Capital Manager Partner Karan Wadhera.
  • Wadhera spoke on a panel at DCM's CannTech conference in San Francisco on Tuesday about the hurdles other firms face when making their first cannabis investment.
  • Wadhera said that, in addition to smaller specialized firms, Tiger Global Management has been a key player in funding cannabis startups in California.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Venture capital is upping its tolerance for cannabis investments.

At DCM's CannTech conference in San Francisco on Tuesday, Casa Verde Capital Manager Partner Karan Wadhera spoke about the hurdles facing venture firms that want to invest in cannabis startups but have partners that are not yet comfortable wading into the murky legal waters.

"Every major firm in San Francisco has looked at the space," Wadhera told conference attendees Tuesday. "Everyone here has gotten time with some of the top firms in the city. Some [firms] are ready and some are coming in steps."

According to Wadhera, federal legalization would help make hesitant investors take the first step in funding a startup in the cannabis industry. He said his firm, which was started by rapper Snoop Dogg, currently focuses on ancillary startups like Eaze, a cannabis marketplace, that "don't touch the plant," so the firm has not seen a lot of pushback from investors.

"The space is changing dramatically," Wadhera said. "There are a lot of big bills in front of Congress right now and when they are passed it will give people more comfort with investing."

In addition to smaller firms that specialize in funding the ancillary companies, Wadhera said Tiger Global Management has been one of the larger key players in funding all types of cannabis startups. According to Pitchbook, Tiger Global Management invested in three cannabis companies including vaporizer maker Pax, regulation tracking platform Metrc, and point-of-sale platform Green Bits.

This all-natural exfoliating peel left my skin feeling softer than ever after just one use — I could actually see my dead skin sloughing off

Insider Picks writes about products and services to help you navigate when shopping online. Insider Inc. receives a commission from our affiliate partners when you buy through our links, but our reporting and recommendations are always independent and objective.

juice

  • Most skincare products take time to work. That's why I'm always impressed with the ones that yield immediate results.
  • The Stem Cellular Exfoliating Peel Spray ($52) from Juice Beauty is a gentle exfoliant that uses all-natural ingredients to slough off dead skin and reveal fresher, brighter looking skin in seconds.
  • The first time I tried it, I was in awe — and I'm not exaggerating here. I've been using it for a few weeks now and still am loving how soft and fresh it leaves my skin feeling.

When it comes to skin care, instant gratification is pretty uncommon. It could take weeks for that serum to reveal its promised dewy glow and even the most expensive under-eye cream out there won't make your crow's feet disappear overnight. Most skincare products take time to work their magic.

But every now and then you'll stumble upon the elusive product that provides serious results with actual immediacy. And when you find one of those products, you have to share it with the world.

That's why I'm divulging all the details of my new skin-care obsession: The Juice Beauty Stem Cellular Exfoliating Peel Spray

The name may be a jumbled mouthful, but trust me: It's one of the most fool-proof ways to exfoliate your way to smoother, glowier skin.

What it is

Juice Beauty was launched in 2005 with a mission to provide high-performance, luxury skincare products made completely from natural and organic ingredients. Since then, the brand has released a host of all-natural makeup and skincare products, ranging from colorful lip glosses to clinically tested and validated skincare collections, like Stem Cellular.

The Stem Cellular Exfoliating Peel Spray is just what it sounds like a facial mist that you spray onto skin to exfoliate.

For many, the word "exfoliate" conjures up memories of vigorously rubbing skin with rough microbeads until it burns. Juice Beauty's iteration of a chemical exfoliant is surprisingly gentle, though understandably so when you consider it's made with stem cells from fruit. Yes, you read that right. The Stem Cellular spray combines exfoliants derived from plants to slough off dead skin, with ingredients like licorice root, cucumber extract, and aloe to nourish, brighten, and soothe it as well.

How to use the peel spray

Juice Beauty recommends using this product in the morning while you shower. As much as I love multitasking, I got it during the day and was so excited to use it, I had to give it a try that night. I think the results were equally as impressive, regardless of when you use it.

After washing my face and patting dry, I reached for the sleek silver bottle. I gave it a good shake and liberally spritzed my face, neck, and décolleté. The mist is cool with an invigorating (though not particularly pleasant) scent. While lightweight, each spritz comes out quickly, so I'd recommend spraying a few inches away from your face.

As the instructions suggested, I let the product sink into my skin for a few seconds. Then, I used my fingertips to rub all of the product in, gently massaging my face with circular motions. Here's where the process gets kind of gross, but really great.

juuice

As I rubbed, I watched the dead skin cells ball up into little clumps on the surface of my skin and onto my fingers. Within just seconds, the peel had lifted the dry, flaky skin off of my face and left scant remnants on the surface. When I felt that I had adequately rubbed everything in, I rinsed my face with warm water.

After patting dry again, I oohed and aahed as I did a double take in the mirror. My skin looked noticeably more vibrant, with healthy dose of redness (which went away quickly, don't worry), and felt so much smoother than before. To make that baby soft skin feeling last, I followed with my favorite moisturizing jelly serum from Moon Juice and a basic Neutrogena moisturizer

When I woke up the next morning, I still felt fresh-faced. Just imagine what my skin would have felt like if I had used the spray in the morning instead.

Bottom Line

At-home exfoliation can be a toss up — if you're not careful about the products you use and how often you exfoliate, you can really hurt your skin. You could always go to the experts and get a facial for a deep exfoliation every now and then, but that isn't the most cost-effective option.

That's why Juice Beauty's exfoliating spray is such a sweet luxury. For $52 you can have a quality exfoliating experience that's gentle on the skin but yields serious results. You can even spray your hands, arms, or any other body parts that could use some extra help sloughing off dry skin.

Since it's made of all-natural and organic ingredients, this product should be fine for all types of skin. It's still an exfoliant though, so you probably shouldn't use it every day — I've been using it about once or twice a week.

My favorite thing about this product, though, is how convenient it is. I don't need to fumble around with physical exfoliators or make a mess with a clay mask — all I have to do is spritz. The size — a travel-friendly 1.7 fluid ounces — makes this easy to take on the go.

I think you'll want to spread the word after trying this one, too.

How to make a brochure on Google Docs for your company or cause

0

brochure

For many, Google Docs can be an invaluable work tool: You can create media-friendly text documents that are easily shared, and they even come complete with a few templates to help you format your work in new ways.

One useful example of these templates: Brochures.

It's important to note, however, that the templated brochures included in Google Docs are set up in vertical pages (rather than the traditional horizontal format you might expect, though they can be altered if that's the look you're after.)

With that in mind, here's how to make and customize a brochure using a Google Docs template:

How to make a brochure on Google Docs

1. Go to docs.google.com. (Please note: The shortcut "docs.new" won't work for this. You have to go to the main docs screen.)

SCREENSHOT MAKE BROCHURE GOOGLE DOCS 1

2. Click "Template Gallery" (if you don't see it, you'll first need to click the three stacked lines in the upper-left corner) and find the "Work" section.

SCREENSHOT MAKE BROCHURE GOOGLE DOCS 2

3. Select the template you'd like to use for your brochure.

4. Edit and replace the filler text and images to suit your needs.

SCREENSHOT MAKE BROCHURE GOOGLE DOCS 3

5. Share your brochures as needed (for example, to collaborate with coworkers or to provide a sample to a client), just as you would share any Google Docs file

You may wish to rename the document (by clicking into the box in the top left corner of the screen), or change the location of the document by clicking the "Move to..." folder icon to the right of the document name.

That way, your new brochure will be easily found among your other documents (though the search function on docs.google.com will also work well, provided you remember a portion of the document name or the core concepts included within it.)

How to customize a brochure template in Google Docs

Google Doc templates are guides, and you can freely diverge from them and remix different templates whenever you want.

If, for example, you're looking for a more traditional brochure (read: horizontal pages with two or three columns), you'd simply create your templated brochure using the directions above and then customize it with the following steps:

1. Click "File" from the menu bar, then click "Page Setup."
