The 20 most Greek colleges in the US

$

0

University Iowa Sorority Students KKG Kappa GammaIn conjunction with its annual best colleges list, The Princeton Review also ranks the US colleges with the most Greek life.

This year Transylvania University, a small liberal arts college in Kentucky, took the top spot with just over 53% of its students participating in Greek life. You might already be familiar with the school's Delta Sigma Phi fraternity brothers, who caught the attention of Taylor Swift herself with their "Shake It Off" video.

It wasn't surprising to find that many of the schools on the list also appeared on the Review's lists of the biggest party schools, schools that drink lots of beer, and schools that drink lots of hard liquor

However, Greek life isn't all about partying. Many of these Greek-heavy colleges also made the lists of schools with top internship opportunities and schools with the best alumni networks.

Nearly half of the colleges on this list are in the south, but Pennsylvania is the most widely represented state, accounting for 20% of the schools ranked.

Here are the schools with the most fraternity brothers and sorority sisters:

  1. Transylvania University – Lexington, Kentucky
  2. Gettysburg College – Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
  3. Southern Methodist University – Dallas, Texas
  4. DePauw University – Greencastle, Indiana
  5. Dartmouth College – Hanover, New Hampshire
  6. Miami University – Oxford, Ohio
  7. Bucknell University – Lewisburg, Pennsylvania
  8. Syracuse University – Syracuse, New York
  9. University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign – Champaign, Illinois
  10. Lehigh University – Bethlehem, Pennsylvania
  11. Union College – Schenectady, New York
  12. Vanderbilt University – Nashville, Tennessee
  13. Florida Southern College – Lakeland, Florida
  14. Pennsylvania State University – University Park, Pennsylvania
  15. Wofford College – Spartanburg, South Carolina
  16. Howard University – Washington, District of Columbia
  17. University of Iowa – Iowa City, Iowa
  18. University of Mississippi – University, Mississippi
  19. Wake Forest University – Winston Salem, North Carolina
  20. Rhodes College – Memphis, Tennessee

Kickstarter project to build a forest in the middle of Times Square could actually happen

PopUP Forest

The PopUP Forest: Times Square could actually put a forest in the crossroads of the world.

The project's Kickstarter to turn pavement into forest reached its goal of $25,000 on March 30. According to the plan, a forest will appear "overnight" in June 2016 and last approximately three weeks.

It will provide a green meadow with towering trees, wildflowers, shrubs, and ferns giving "visitors an immersive natural area experience in the most un-natural place on the planet."

The project was started by NYC Wildflower Week, which "provides free educational and programming opportunities to engage urbanites with the wilds of the Big Apple," because "New York City is so much more than taxicabs, the Empire State Building, and Jay-Z."

However, that doesn't mean you'll be seeing the planned three-week pop-up forest in the busiest intersection in the world quite yet.

PopUP Forest

Though many "elected officials, corporations, and philanthropic foundations" are interested in the project according to the Kickstarter, the group must first supply a proof of concept. While the group's ultimate goal is a forest in Times Square, many of the funds from the Kickstarter are first going to a similar project in the Gowanus section of Brooklyn, as a test, as well as planning and developing phase 1 of the Times Square installation.

From there, Wildflower's hope is that the Times Square Alliance business development coalition will plan the rest of the project.

After meeting the original goal, the group's new stretch goal of $40,000 will go to expanding the Brooklyn concept into it's own permanent display.

9 things every first-time visitor to Las Vegas should know

$
0
0

Before last year, I was a Las Vegas virgin.

I had never walked the Strip, taken a ride on the New York New York roller coaster, or even gambled. The only things I knew about Vegas were what I had seen on TV.

I ended up having a blast — it's impossible not to in Sin City. But there were quite a few things I didn't realize about Vegas until I went.

These are the nine things everyone should know before they travel to Las Vegas for the first time.

1. You can't walk everywhere

las vegas stripAll the hotels are much farther apart than they first appear. Technically, the entire Strip is over four miles long, and it will take you at least a 15-30 minute walk to get to a different hotel than your own. Before the weekend is over, you will end up taking a few cabs.

But you should walk at least part of the Strip once. There are fun elevated walkways and outdoor elevators, not to mention plenty of photo opportunities. Just don't do it in 4-inch heels (better yet — leave those heels at home).

2. You can take your drink to go

vegas beer drinking outsideAre you headed to another club or restaurant, but you're not quite finished with your drink? Ask for a to-go cup!

Seriously — even classy establishments will let you take your drink outside as long as you use a disposable cup instead of their fancy glassware.

Oh, and once outside, you can imbibe with impunity since Vegas lets you drink (most) everywhere.

3. Bring cash — ATMs are crazy expensive

las vegas bellagio atm default menuUnless you can find your own bank ATM, the standard fee at most Vegas ATMs is a staggering $5.99 — a charge that may not bother the high rollers, but gets really old, really fast for the rest of us.

If I ever went to Vegas again, I'd bring plenty of cash.

4. You can get free drinks by gambling

vegas bar gamblingThere are a few things Vegas casinos do to keep you gambling (no clocks, no windows, plenty of lights and sounds), but the trick that works the best is plying customers with free drinks to keep them playing, and playing poorly.

While I'm not much of gambler, my friend told me to go sit at the bars with the gaming machines built into the counter. You stick in a $20, order a drink, and make minor bets of $.25. I played until I had won all my money back and knocked back a few glasses of wine while I was at it.

Basically, you can just drink for free (but don't forget to tip your bartender).

5. There's art all around

las vegas art canoes Nancy Rubins big edgeMost of us go to Vegas to gamble, drink, and party. But take a moment to realize there's art all around you on the Strip.

There are sculptures by famous artists behind the check-in desks, in the hotel lobbies, on the street, not to mention the fact that certain hotels like the Bellagio and The Cosmopolitan have their own galleries that display touring collections from around the world.

There's even the Picasso restaurant in the Bellagio, which is filled with sculptures, drawings, and paintings from the late artist.

6. Everyone smokes, everywhere

smoking cowboy vegasIn Vegas, it's permissible for people to smoke inside casinos. To try and counteract that, the casinos will attempt to cover up the smell with what they call "signature scents."

The smell isn't incredibly offensive (especially if you're in a nice hotel), but if you're sensitive to cigarette smoke, you may want to stay somewhere that is non-gaming, such as the Trump International Hotel, The Signature at the MGM Grand, and Vdara Hotel & Spa.

7. The food is incredible

burgers at tap at mgm in las vegasAlmost every single Vegas hotel restaurant on the strip was phenomenal. No one thinks of Vegas as a foodie city, but from sports bars to three-star Michelin establishments, Vegas delivers.

Many of these huge hotels have fantastic relationships with seafood and produce providers, and prepare their meat and make their breads in-house. Personally, I'd make the trip back just for the food.

8. Men must buy tickets (or bottles) to get into a club

lavo las vegasVegas may be bachelor-party central, but no group of guys is going to get into a club without buying tickets, bottle service, or a table. Period.

I saw several groups of rejected men begging women to join their group to try and get in for free, but at the bigger clubs like XS, TAO, LAVO, and Marquee, that's just not going to happen.

Either chip in together for bottle/table service, buy a ticket to a DJ show, or don't try to go to clubs. You'll just be disappointed.

Ladies, you probably won't pay for anything. Enjoy.

9. Downtown Las Vegas is far away (but worth checking out)

heart attack grill burgerMy friend who I traveled with was a seasoned Vegas veteran, but she had never been to downtown Vegas. Neither of us knew what to expect.

Turns out, it's nice to get away from the expensive strip and see a different side of the city. Plus, there's a Mob Museum, you can see the remnants of Old Vegas before the Strip was built (there's still gambling, too), and you can try some kitschy establishments like the Heart Attack Grill.

It's worth seeing at least once, even though it is a $30 cab drive away.

Here's how much you should tip in every situation

$

diner server

According to industry experts, tips in the U.S. total around $40 billion a year.

But for such a major expenditure, most of us are unsure how it works.

Tim Urban from Wait But Why, a self-described "procrastination website," took it upon himself to shed light on tipping norms by asking over 100 service workers in New York City about their experiences.

The people he consulted included waiters, bartenders, barbers, doormen, valets, and more from different neighborhoods and different types of businesses. He then compared their feedback with accounts from his site's readers and to industry research, particularly that of tipping expert Wm. Michael Lynn.

The findings are summarized in Wait But Why's comprehensive tipping chart below:

chart tipping statistics

You'll notice that average tippers across most industries give around 15-20%, and that it's always a good idea to tip more in extenuating circumstances — like if your food delivery person had to brave bad weather or if you've ordered an elaborate cocktail that takes your bartender three times as long as it would to pour a beer.

While most of us may try and tip 20% of our meal so as not to seem cheap, keep in mind that you should never tip under 15% in a restaurant or bar. If your service was terrible, take it up with the manager. Most servers rely heavily on tips as a major part of their salaries, so neglecting to tip means they may be working nearly for free. In many places, tips are shared among the staff, so stiffing a service person on a tip may do more than punish just that individual.

And if you aren't tipping, it's nicer to just leave the line on your bill for the tip blank and fill in the total below. Putting a zero in the empty space apparently comes across as pointed and mean.

The fabulous life of Bob Parsons, the billionaire founder of GoDaddy

bob parsons

GoDaddy went public today, nearly 10 months after filing for an IPO in June 2014.

With a 28% stake, founder Bob Parsons is still the company's largest shareholder. Parsons left his position as GoDaddy's executive chairman in June of 2014.

Since then, the Scottsdale, Arizona, resident has dedicated more time to doing charity work, growing his motorcycle collection, and scooping up real estate through his investment company, YAM Properties.

Forbes estimates his net worth at $1.84 billion — not bad for someone who grew up "poor as a church mouse" in Baltimore.

Before becoming an entrepreneur, Parsons was a Marine and did a tour of Vietnam in 1969. He earned a Combat Action Ribbon, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry and a Purple Heart for his service.

After selling his first company to Intuit for $64 million, he founded GoDaddy in 1997, at first calling it Jomax Technologies. In 2011, he sold the majority of GoDaddy to a group of private equity investors and left his position as CEO. In 2014, he left his position as executive chairman, but still sits on GoDaddy's board.

Since leaving his day-to-day role with the company, Parsons has used much of his time and wealth in charity work with the foundation he started with his wife Renee. They've donated nearly $72 million to charity over the last three years. Here he is outside of a school during one of several trips to Haiti.

Architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s former apartment at New York’s Plaza Hotel has gone on sale for $39.5 million, according to The New York Post.

The gorgeous home has four bedrooms and 4,000 square feet of space. It was featured in Architectural Digest last November by the current owners Lisa Cohen, the home editor for DuJour magazine, and her husband James, the chairman of Hudson Media, who use it as a Manhattan pied-à-terre.

The home was gut-renovated in 2011 and redecorated in a modern style. The living and dining rooms were extended and three additional bedrooms were created, one with its own private entry that is wheel chair accessible.

The condo has 13-foot ceilings and large windows that look out on the Guggenheim, Central Park, and more. The apartment also has access to the concierge, maid, and in-room dining services that are a part of the Plaza Hotel.

Corcoran Group Real Estate agent Marie-Claire Gladstone has the listing.

Welcome to Frank Lloyd Wright's former suite at the Plaza Hotel. He used the apartment to oversee construction at the Guggenheim in the '50s.

The current owners had the place gut-renovated and redecorated back in 2011.

They used the unit as a Manhattan pied-à-terre, but had a main home in New Jersey.

Indiana pizza joint that vowed to never deliver pizza to a gay wedding forced to close

memories pizza

After the owner of an Indiana pizza parlor said he would not deliver to a gay wedding, a deluge of harassment forced him to temporarily close his restaurant, TMZ is reporting.

Indiana's new religious freedom law allows business to refuse service for religious reasons. Memories Pizza, owned by Crystal and Kevin O'Connor, was reportedly the first business to do so.

Apparently, the family's Christian beliefs would prevent them from catering a same-sex wedding.

"If a gay couple came in and wanted us to provide them pizzas for a wedding, we would have to say no," Crystal told an Indiana news station, as Talking Points Memo reported.

Immediately after these comments, the pizza joint started receiving threatening phone calls and comments on social media, Kevin told TMZ.

Kevin said he did not mind if gay people ate at his restaurant — but because he does not believe in gay marriage he could not have people attending one eating his pies.

Last week, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence (R) ignited controversy around the country when he signed the Religious Freedom Retaliation Act, which intends to protect his state's religious residents from behaving against their beliefs, into law.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this story indicated a website for Memories Pizza had been hacked. The domain for the website referred to was registered Wednesday and appears to have no affiliation with the business in question.

The essential guide to men's ties

$
0
0

man in a suit

Go ahead and throw on a tie.

Feel the difference?

It's a small thing, but small things are the point.

When you're sporting a tie, you can pretty much stroll in anywhere you want; it's like an Admirals Club card that you wear on the outside.

Whether you're suiting up for the office or laying out a look for the evening, a tie allows you to pull together the disparate elements of your wardrobe with a touch of texture or complementary color.

If you learn to do it correctly—balance the width of the tie against your lapels and shirt collar, find a knot that fits your face—you'll have dressing right all tied up.

A tie is the first thing people notice

"Nice tie!" That's always what people say. Their eyes can't help but go there.

So while you do want a tie that looks great all on its own, remember, it shouldn't be a novelty piece.

It's meant to speak to the rest of your outfit, not stand apart from or clash with it.

Length matters...

Whether you're six feet four or five feet six, the tip of the tie should hit right at your beltline— not three inches below it, not two inches above it. That is, unless you're doing the whole short-suit thing. And then, yes, let the tie hang tight above the navel.
462671088

...And so does width

At GQ, we like a narrow— but not superskinny—tie, about two and a quarter to two and three-quarter inches at its widest point.

Much wider than that and you start to look like a congressman.

This thinner width works both at the office and on the town, syncing up with any modern-cut suit.

Your knot shouldn't resemble a giant dorito

Do you want a knot the size of a P'Zone, like Stuart Scott on ESPN? No, you don't. So go ahead and ignore the half Windsor, the Prince Albert, the Super-duper Double Elliott, and all those other knots you find in sartorial guidebooks.

You really need to know only one knot—the four-in-hand. It's neither too big nor too small nor too perfectly triangular. It's natural and elegant, and it works with every collar, from a spread to a point. Learn it, never forget it, always use it.

Love your dimple: the secret tie weapon

"Yes, a snugly knotted tie will look perfectly fine without one," says GQ senior fashion editor Lisa Cohen. "But the dimple's the finishing touch that pulls it all together. We consider it essential." Here's how to take your look from passable to polished.

1. When you're almost done tying your tie, press your thumb against your index finger just beneath the knot, so the fabric forms a crease.

2. Pull down the narrow end of the tie to tighten the dimple, and slide up the knot.

3. Finesse either side of the dimple to accentuate the fold and set it in place.

Want some solid advice? Keep it solid

Daniel CraigAt GQ, we love a vibrantly striped repp tie or a boldly patterned club tie.

But you're not going to see much in the way of dizzying paisleys or loud wallpaper prints.

We're not into ties as conversation pieces.

We like a tie that anchors an outfit.

When we assemble one of our suit-and-tie stories, we almost always find ourselves reaching for solid or subtly patterned ties.

They ground a busy shirt like a plaid or a gingham, and they stand strong against a crisp white or pale pink. They're fail-safe.

The essential can't-go-wrong tie wardrobe

We're not saying you shouldn't own more than five ties, but if you owned only these, you'd be set for every outfit and every occasion.

Harvard TieWool

In the middle of winter, you'll want a tie to pair with your heavier-weight suits.

Solid Black

For formalwear occasions, for a gray suit with a white shirt, or for a leather or jean jacket. Exceptionally versatile.

Pin-Dot

Like a polka-dot, but much smarter and more subtle.

Club

Any tie with a repeating logo. Once just for the Ivy League set, now for anyone with serious style.

Repp

Still a Capitol Hill staple, but now cut skinny for the cool kids, too.

Timeless style: why loose and easy always looks sharp

John HammSeems like half the covers we shoot, our guy has his tie undone. It's one of those not-trying-at-all looks that actually take some trying.

• You don't want to resemble some broker who just lost a million bucks in the last twenty minutes. So stick with a slim, cool-guy tie—not a honking power tie.

• A little scruff always helps. It's the grooming equivalent of a loosened knot.

• And get the shirt right. A washed and worn oxford is your easiest option. But if you do go with a pressed shirt, keep it understated. Avoid those Euro ones with the stiff oversize collars; there's nothing easy and relaxed about them.

No more big, fat, wide ties!

The man who rebirthed the skinny tie makes his case

"A skinnier tie just feels of-the-moment right now. It's not too mainstream and not too traditional. And there's less material, so there's less potential for a color or pattern to feel garish or offensive. Plus, the way people dress is cyclical. What's rebellion and what's conformity flip-flop back and forth. For a long time, rebellion was a T-shirt and a trucker hat. Then, suddenly, that mess became conformity, and dressing up a little bit became a way to differentiate yourself. Take the Mad Men era: Back then, looking really fantastic was the way to conform, and rebellion was the beatnik in the T-shirt. And then it just flips. Paul Tudor Jones

Billionaire hedge fund manager Paul Tudor Jones II just dropped a fortune on a new house in Palm Beach.

Tudor Jones paid $71.2 million for the nearly six-acre estate, the Palm Beach Daily News reported, citing a deed posted on the county clerk's website.

The estate, known as Casa Apava, reportedly has 420 feet of oceanfront, and the Mediterranean-style house was designed by the son of President James Garfield and built in 1918, according to the Palm Beach Daily News.

It was later owned by billionaire Ronald Perelman.

Tudor Jones' purchase comes a week after he delivered a speech railing against the 1 percent and warning of the dangers of the growing wealth gap in America.

He told a TED audience that the gap between America's wealthiest and poorest would inevitably close "either through revolution, higher taxes, or wars."

Tudor Jones, who co-founded the Robin Hood Foundation, recently formed a new non-profit called JUST Capital to help advance corporate social responsibility in companies.

His new estate is located in a part of Palm Beach known as "Billionaires Row."

The 50 smartest public high schools in the US

Stuyvesant High School

Some people believe that the best high-school educations come from private schools, but that couldn't be further from the truth.

Public schools can provide first-class global educations that prepare students for college and successful careers.

The experts at college data website Niche put together a list of the smartest public high schools in the US based primarily on state-assessment proficiency, the colleges that students go on to, AP enrollment and exam pass rates, graduation rates, and composite ACT and SAT scores.

Because there isn't a good 1-to-1 ratio for ACT to SAT score comparison, the SAT composite scores are expressed here as a range. You can read more about Niche's methodology here.

50. Pine View School – Osprey, Florida

SAT composite range: 2020-2070

Pine View is a school for the gifted. Like other high schools, Pine View offers the standard state-required subjects that all students learn, but Pine View also gives students a unique intellectual experience with options for self-pacing, independent study, and electives in subjects such as women's studies and history of the Vietnam War.

49. Poolesville High School – Poolesville, Maryland

SAT composite range: 1980-2010

Poolesville High School has been ranked as the No. 1 high school in the tristate area of Maryland, Virginia, and DC for the past three years running. The magnet school excels in its strong STEM programming and an AP course offering of 25-plus classes.

48. Campolindo High School – Moraga, California

SAT composite range: 1920-1970

Students at Campolindo High School receive exposure to an academic core and a well-balanced smattering of arts and technical classes. The school is often frequented by a number of in-state and out-of-state college recruiters, including Yale and the US Military Academy at West Point.

cuba airbnb

U.S. citizens can officially travel to Cuba using Airbnb, the company announced today.

Airbnb has seen a 70% increase in searches for Cuban listings from U.S. users since December 2014, when President Obama announced eased travel restrictions to Cuba.

More than 1,000 "casa particulares"— or traditional Cuban homes — have been added as Airbnb listings this morning. Not all of them have full internet access, but Airbnb hosting partners will be helping hosts to manage their bookings online.

At the moment, Airbnb's Cuban service is only available to U.S. citizens.

We stumbled upon a gorgeous bed & breakfast in Havana, now available for Americans to rent. It's just one example of the authentically Cuban experiences travelers can now get by booking a vacation through Airbnb.

The bed & breakfast is located on the top of a hill in the geographic center of Havana.

It's a historic building surrounded by beautiful flowers and palm trees.

The host, Sivio, has listed a few of the bed & breakfast's rooms on Airbnb.

7 things a tailor can do — and 7 things a tailor can't

bespoke suit fitting tailor Anderson & Sheppard

This post is excerpted from How To Win At Shopping by David Zyla and Eila Mell. Here are some things that tailors can and can't do, so you can go into your next visit prepared.

how to win at shopping

A Tailor Can...

✶ Add top stitching back to the hem of your jeans after shortening.

✶ Maximize the amount of length in a pair of pants by dropping the hem to the longest possible length and finishing the inside with hem tape.

✶ Stitch down and remove the front pockets of your pants to create a smoother, slimmer effect.

✶ Shorten straps so that a dress or top raises to fit through the torso and has properly placed bust darts and underarms.

✶ Shorten sleeves. If your coat sleeve is past the knuckle or your blazer sleeve is past the wrist, they can be adjusted.

✶ Line a sheer garment with your shade of nude (the color most complementary to your skin tone) to enable you to wear regular undergarments under it.

✶ Add a hook and eye or snap at the point where your button-front blouse gapes.

A Tailor Can't...

✶ Take more than two inches out of the back center seam of jeans or pants with back pockets. Otherwise, the pockets will be too close together.

✶ Let out the seams of a garment made of a fabric that will show stitch marks such as linen, cotton, or silk. The result would be holes in your clothes.

✶ Reduce something more than one size. The proportions and seams will not end up where they should be.

✶ Remove heavy shoulder pads from a jacket. The fabric will not drape or fit your shoulders correctly without them.

✶ Lengthen a jacket. Shortening may be possible, but there will not be enough seam allowance to lengthen.

✶ Repair a hole by stitching it closed. Avoid a lumpy outcome and ask for a recommendation for a reweaving service.

✶ Change the original design completely. Alterations are possible, but if transformation is desired, go for another garment or have something custom made.
