A gentleman only needs these 5 items to transition his wardrobe to spring

0
0

Spring is fickle. It's hard to know when it's arrived to stay, which makes it hard for a gentleman to juggle every item of clothing he needs for the season.

Basically, the challenge is how to stay warm without looking like you're still in hibernation.

Here's your solution: You only really need 5 items (or tips), according to our friend Judah Estreicher of Baltimore's JBD Clothiers. JBD makes custom suits and dresses clients like Flip Saunders, the head coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves, and Frank P. Bramble Sr., a board member at Bank of America Corporation.

1. You need a trench coat.=nordstom men's trench

"Bring out that classic trench coat," said Estreicher. "Winter has come and gone, so nix all those fur and heavy wool jackets. If you want to try something new, go for a trench with a pattern or a different type of fabric..."

The Cole Haan Cotton Blend Twill Car Coat will cost you $328.00 at Nordstrom.

2. You need some solid layering sweaters.

"Layering is key — the shift from winter to spring means chilly mornings with warmer afternoons. Layering guarantees you won’t be caught overheating during your lunch breaks or shivering on your morning trek to work," said Estreicher.

You may want to check out some knits from Combatant Gentleman — sweaters $45, cardigans $35.

3. Get a blue suit.

"Add some color to your suit, blue to be exact," Estreicher told Business Insider. "Blue suits showed up all over New York Fashion Week this year and a pop of color adds a fresh feel to any ensemble. If you aren’t quite ready to rock a full blue suit, go for something more subtle, like a blue sport jacket or blue pants."

You've got tons of options for a fresh spring suit that will actually fit you. Try Indochino, Alton Lane, Combatant Gentleman and more.

suit saks fifth avenueSaks Fifth Avenue's Samuelsohn Two-button check wool suit will cost you $978.

4. Go sockless.

"Skip the socks. It’s spring now and our ankles no longer need to be covered up by heavy, scratchy socks. So keep them in the drawer and if you’re feeling adventurous, roll up your pants and show us a little ankle," said Estreicher.

5. Get yourself a pair of fresh sunglasses.

"Bring out your stylish sunglasses. More sun means more chances to wear your best shades. Spring 2015 trends include mirrored lenses and rounded frames. If you are feeling classic, stick to your timeless aviators, as they will always be in fashion," said Estreicher.

If you feel like splurging, look to Barton Perreira's collection. The pair below, "Mac," retail for $470.

What life is like in Dearborn, Michigan — deemed the Arab capital of North America

Salwan Georges, "finding freedom" photo project

More than 30,000 Arab people call Dearborn, Michigan, home.

The Detroit suburb is the kind of place where Arabic speakers can walk into their local grocery and be spoken to in a language they recognize. The markets, businesses, mosques, and Islamic schools surround residents with reminders of the countries they left behind.

Student-photographer Salwan Georges and his family fled Iraq 10 years ago and relocated to the US. In 2014, Georges began photographing the people of Dearborn to capture their traditions. We've republished some of his photos here with permission, and you can find more on his website.

Located just outside of Detroit, the city of Dearborn is home to the nation's most densely populated Arab community.

When the US invaded Iraq in 2003, Middle Eastern families began to flee their war-torn countries in search of safety and prosperity. Many came to Dearborn, where a Lebanese enclave formed after the first Gulf War.

Today, over 30% of Dearborn's 98,000 residents are of Arab descent. While intolerance occasionally crops up among local protesters and bloggers, the community finds strength and solidarity in numbers.

Beautifully detailed maps show what makes up the American landscape

Maps have always helped us gain a better grasp of the world we live in.

Based on data from the 2014 USDA's CropScape Program, designer Michael Pecirno created these beautifully detailed maps to show what makes up the American landscape (the lower 48 states) as a whole. Pecirno pulled specific data to show how grasslands, forests, crops, and water cover the entire country.

The maps, called "Minimal Maps," are an ongoing project that aim to explore how "richly-detailed single subject maps can give us new imagery to understand our landscape," Pecirno writes on his website

"For instance, corn fields take up 91 million acres of the American landscape. This is a staggering 4.83% of the continuous United States," Pecirno writes. "While hearing that value is quite astounding, there is little way right now for us to visualize what 4.83% of the American landscape looks like, or furthermore, where this land is. By focusing each map on a single subject, we are able to better visualize and understand our landscape."

Check out the maps below.

Psychologists found the personality traits that make people fat

0
0

Charlotte McKinney Carls Jr hamburger model eating

The next time you feel fat, don't stare at your scale wondering what went wrong.

Instead, take a personality test.

Because according to a new Swiss study cited by New York Magazine, your eating habits are unknowingly guided by your personality traits.

Researchers from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology gathered self-reported personality, eating, and food choice data from over a thousand people in the German-speaking parts of Switzerland.

"We found that a person's personality does, in fact, determine why he or she eats and what he or she eats," lead author Carmen Keller told New York.

The researchers used the most studied personality inventory, the Big 5.

These traits are considered to remain stable over a lifetime:

• Extroversion, or how much you need contact with other people

• Openness to experience, or how much you desire novelty

• Conscientiousness, or how much you need to follow the rules

• Agreeableness, or how much you need to feel liked

• Neuroticism, or how easily your emotions are affected

Interestingly, these traits showed themselves in different eating behaviors.

Keller and his co-author Michael Siegrist report:

• "Conscientiousness prevented consumption of sweet and savory foods and of sugar-sweetened soft drinks by promoting restrained eating."

• "Neurotic ... individuals seem to adopt counter-regulatory emotional eating and to eat high-energy, dense sweet and savory food in particular, presumably to cope with their negative emotions."

• "The higher sociability of extroverted people, which is basically a health beneficial psychological resource, seems to have health-averse effects."

It seems neurotic people may have a tendency toward emotional eating, and extroverted people, who are more likely to eat out with friends, may be more likely to have larger portions of unhealthier food.

On the other hand, in the same way that a conscientious person has the discipline to meet deadlines, he has the wherewithal to opt for carrots instead of Cheetos when in need of an afternoon snack.

While we shouldn't generalize the results of a small population from a small European country to the whole of human society, the study is a breakthrough in the way it connects eating with personality.

If your success as an entrepreneur is largely shaped by your personality, then it's pretty natural that your eating habits will be, too.

Unfortunately, weight has real ramifications in business. For instance, the Guardian reports that women who are 13 pounds overweight can lose $9,000 a year in salary.

30 books everyone should read before turning 30

0
0

girl reading

Your 20s are a time for figuring out who you are and what you want from life.

While the only way to learn is to survive the inevitable cycle of successes and failures, it is always useful to have some guidance along the way.

To help you out, we've selected some of our favorite books that likely never made your high school or college reading lists.

It's an eclectic selection that focuses on topics like identity, how you see the world, and laying the foundation for a fulfilling career.

Here's what we think you should read before you turn 30.

'Meditations' by Marcus Aurelius

As you become an adult, you realize that there will never be a time in your life where everything is just as you hoped it would be.

"Meditations" is a collection of personal writings on maintaining mental toughness from the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, who ruled from 161 to 180 AD and became remembered as one of the great "philosopher kings."

As Gregory Hays notes in the introduction to his excellent translation, Marcus wrote his musings on resilience and leadership in a "dark and stressful period" in the last decade of his life.

The emperor's version of Stoic philosophy has remained relevant for 1,800 years because it offers timeless advice for gaining control of one's emotions and progressing past all obstacles in one's path.

'The Myth of Sisyphus: And Other Essays' by Albert Camus

We all have a reason to get out of bed in the morning, and we start to question that reason after entering the real world.

As "The Stranger" author Albert Camus sees it, all people find themselves in an irrational world struggling to find meaning for their lives where there is none.

His main message, however, is that just as the legend of Sisyphus tells of a god who was eternally punished by having to push a rock up a hill only to have it fall down each time he reached the peak, we should embrace the drive for meaning and lead happy, fulfilling lives with a clear-eyed view of the world.

'Crime and Punishment' by Fyodor Dostoyevsky

Regardless of your personal philosophy, there will be times when the world pushes against you and you wonder why it's worth trying to better yourself and help others.

Fyodor Dostoyevsky's novel is not only a gripping story, it's an argument against the nihilism that was popular among Russian intellectual circles in his time.

"Crime and Punishment" is the tale of a 23-year-old man named Raskolnikov who, acting on a nagging urge, murders two old women and then struggles with processing the act.

Dostoyevsky argues that rationalism taken to its extreme ignores the powerful bonds that connect humanity and give us responsibility over each other.

These startups could completely change how we manage pain and treat cancer

0

Man in pain

Medical technology is about to blow your mind — and potentially transform how you manage your health.

Soon you'll be able to soothe chronic back pain with the injection of a microchip, lower your blood pressure with radio-frequency energy, and get dental implants that reduce swelling in your gums. There will also be a gel-based device that helps remove tumors, customized contact lenses for vision disorders, a diagnostic for neurological diseases, and clothing that helps people recover after hip- and knee-replacement surgery.

All of these groundbreaking technologies are making medical procedures more accessible and less invasive. And some of the startups behind them — Nasseo, Stimwave, Yolia Health, Kulira Technologies, Verve Medical, Saccadous, and Hildeez — have another surprising thing in common: They share the same working space in Peoria, Arizona.

That's because they're members of BioInspire, Arizona's first biomedical incubator and accelerator program. BioInspire provides a rent-free facility, seed funding, mentorship, and other resources to select medical device companies that commit to staying in Peoria for at least five years.

BioAccel, a nonprofit for early-stage life-science technologies, teamed up with the city of Peoria to bring the incubator to life. The hope is that BioInspire will stimulate the biomedical industry within Peoria and create more high-wage jobs.

Here are more details on what the companies are developing:

Nasseo is creating cost-effective, better-performing dental and orthopedic implants using proprietary surface-modification technology. The company's first product, the Nasseo TiArray™ Dental Implant System, was cleared by the FDA in August 2013.

Stimwave has invented the Freedom-4 Spinal Corld Stimulator System, the world's first wireless device for chronic back and leg pain relief. It's a tiny, injectable microchip that sends pulses of energy to electrodes near surrounding nerves and is 95% smaller than the smallest implantable battery. As of January 2015, it's available for purchase in the US.

Yolia Health's True Vision Treatment® targets presbyopia (farsightedness), a common age-related vision disorder that causes blurring, with customized contact lenses and formulated eye drops that can be administered at home. It alters the cornea's topography to improve vision.

Kulira Technologies aims to improve the lives of patients who undergo surgical treatments for cancer. They develop tools to help oncology specialists, such as SolidX™, a gel-based medical device that improves tumor preparation for faster surgical cancer removal.

Verve Medical is creating a medical device that uses radio-frequency energy to prevent overactive nerves from causing high-blood pressure. A transurethral catheter is guided to the kidney to deactivate nerves in the areas.

Saccadous uses high-speed cameras to track involuntary eye movements, which can help diagnose neurological diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Its technology is cloud-based, compatible with mobile, and noninvasive.

Hildeezmakes hip- and knee-recovery garments that allow patients to recover on the go, with built-in stabilizing ice pockets, stabilizing pockets, Velcro openings, and elastic waistbands.

Armed with resources and funding from BioInspire, these ambitious startups are making significant progress in the realm of medical technology. They're redefining what it means to "take your health into your own hands" — one device at a time.

Here's how to look sharp wearing a suit with sneakers

0
0

suits sneakers

We’ve asked our friends at MR PORTER.COM, the men’s style destination with same-day delivery in Manhattan and London, for some expert style advice. This week’s topic: suits and sneakers.

Our PR Manager Mr Michael Dale is rarely seen out of a suit. Some have said it is a stipulation of his contract, others claim it’s a time-saving exercise. The truth, however, is far simpler. He does not moonlight as a lawyer, and he is not an opportunistic wedding crasher. He just, well, enjoys it. And, as you’d expect from a man with practice, he wears tailoring rather well.

On entering the MR PORTER HQ recently, instead of teaming his suit with a pair of, say, John Lobb monk-straps, he wore Stan Smith sneakers. Nothing hugely shocking there, we know. Ever since high-fashion brands started finessing their sneaker game, and style icons such as Messrs Mark Ronson and Kanye West showed us how to dress them up, men have enjoyed experimenting in this way. And one look at this year’s collections tells us tailoring and trainers remain in a healthy relationship.

Runway trends aside, this combination says one simple yet powerful thing. It says you are wearing a suit not because a job or lack of imagination require it, but because you want to. And you feel very comfortable doing so. It is, therefore, an extremely assured look, but one that can be tricky to pull off.

Below, we have put together five ensembles fit for any occasion. Perhaps you’d like to start wearing more suits in your downtime, but worry you’ll seem a little stuffy. Maybe you are required to wear tailoring in the office but want to be more playful at the weekend. However you want to make suits and sneakers work, tread with confidence, and try to stick to a few ground rules…

Traveling today, meeting tomorrow

Screen Shot 2015 03 26 at 2.51.12 PMWhen dressing for an important meeting, the first thought is usually: brogues or Oxfords? However, especially if the brainstorming begins fresh from a flight, you might consider an appropriate sneaker-and-suit combination (unless you tread the formal floors of law or banking firms). The key here is classic kicks such as Stan Smiths and fitted trousers. Don chunky high tops, and you run the risk of resembling a rebellious sixth-former. Go for a formally structured suit and it might seem as if you left your Oxfords in the luggage rack. This Burberry suit will travel well, and should avoid any puddling – while the grandad-collar shirt brings authority to proceedings. Here is a man who wears tailoring for the sheer fun of it, and walks, not hobbles, from flight to appointment.

Shop the look:

Screen Shot 2015 03 26 at 4.35.42 PMBurberry London blue travel suit: $1,995

The art of creative dressing

sneakers suitsWhether it be at fashion week or in our local bar, we’ve noticed some guys in the office are pulling off the contemporary sneakers and suit combination with increasing aplomb – aided and abetted by the increased offering from high-end designers, and some more creatively minded men showing us how it’s done. With a camouflage pattern, the last thing you want to do with these sneakers is blend in – but teamed with a simple dark Paul Smith suit, and tie-free white shirt, this should provide an appropriate palette for going from, say, a gallery opening to a party – and the approaching Art Basel in June might be the perfect place to try it out.

My other ride is an Oxford

suit sneakersSome men who are required to wear tailoring for work also feel comfortable doing so during downtime. Ditching leather shoes at the weekend is a welcome way to remind your friends you’re wearing a suit to dinner out of choice, not because you can’t differentiate between socialising and networking. Patent Lanvin sneakers retain some of the finesse of a formal shoe, and, when worn with an understated shirt and tie, can be dressed up in a refined and contemporary manner. Make sure your suit is mat, and free of business-like patterns such as pinstripes. Instead, opt for something a little more casual than you might be used to, such as this one from J.Crew. And however many compliments you receive, remember not to get too comfortable. Sauntering in to your Monday morning client meeting in a pair of sneakers is never a good idea.

From the office to the beach house

suit sneakersYour coast-bound train leaves at 7pm. You finish work at 6pm (the boss refused to let you out early). You want to be smart for the office (to appease said difficult boss) and look the part to kick-start a long weekend. Unless you intend on changing at 120mph in a train lavatory, you’ll need to think on your feet. This Oliver Spencer suit is lightweight and relaxed enough for a spring evening drink, but also offers enough sophistication for honouring Friday office etiquette. The easy slip-ons from Common Projects will alleviate any stuffiness from your look (keep them box-fresh, of course), as will the striped linen T-shirt. And you can always dress things up with a shirt should your plans require it.

From the gym to the office (or the bar)

sneakers suitsFor the modern professional, time is not in abundance. We brush our teeth in the shower, eat breakfast in front of computer screens and skip lunch to go to the gym. Until recently, Nikes such as these would have been seen only during a work-out, or with a pair of black jeans, but – inspired by the runway (and those who dwell in the trendier parts of town) – more men are leaving them on post-work-out and injecting a youthful pop to their tailoring. Some pointers: try to keep the suit slim and contemporary like this one from Calvin Klein, don’t stray too far towards the “performance” style of sneakers, and keep your kicks clean. You don’t want to channel those men who replace their “work shoes” with sorry old sports sneakers for the commute home.

What it's like to play the brand new $269 million golf course that Donald Trump just opened in New York City

0

Trump Golf Links Ferry Point

New York City has a brand new championship-caliber golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus.

And, anyone can play it.

Donald Trump officially opened Trump Golf Links in Ferry Point, New York on April 1. Last fall, I got a chance to play a round with our sports editor Tony Manfred.

It's a great course. It blows away all the other public courses in New York City, which isn't saying much because most of the city's courses are pretty beat up and uninspired. (There are a surprising number of courses in New York City. Of all the courses I've played in New York, here are my city rankings: 1. Pelham Bay; 2. La Tourette; 3. Split Rock; 4. Marine Park; 5. Dyker Beach; 6. South Shore; 7. Silver Lake; 8. Douglaston; 9. Moshulu; 10. Van Cortlandt.)

More impressively, Trump Golf Links, which was built for a reported $269 million, is in contention to be a top five public course in the New York metro area. My list of the best courses in the New York Metro area (which means ~1 hour drive out of the city) before Trump Links goes like this: 1. Bethpage Black; 2. Pound Ridge; 3. Neshanic Valley; 4. Ballyowen; 5. Bethpage Red.

The new Trump course could compete with those last three on the list, though as a friend of mine said of the course, it's best to wait until it is in full bloom.

There are only two downsides to the course:

1. It's expensive. A round ranges from $141 to $215, depending on the day of the week and whether you're an NYC resident. An average round at a public city course is ~$40.

2. It's in the Bronx, but not near any train lines, so it's not the most convenient place to get to.

Still! It's a fun time, and it will be on every New York golfer's list in 2015.

When I played I took some photos of the course so you can get a sense of the course. This is not a perfect representation because the course will have tall fescue grown in when it's warmer, but this is an idea of what it will be like.

This is what the course will look like when it's in its glory in the summer of 2015. The fescue will be up; the city will be in the background.

And here's one more look at the 18th hole, with the Whitestone Bridge in the background.

Here's what it looked like when we arrived in the morning.

10 things that are harder to get into than Harvard

Harvard Business School graduation

Harvard is one of the most prestigious universities in the world and also one of the most selective. The school acccepted just 5.33% of applicants this year, making it the most competitive Ivy League school in the US.

As Harvard President Drew Gilpin Faust once said, "We could fill our class twice over with valedictorians."

The school seeks out students who not only have high grades, but also have outstanding achievements under their belts — from overcoming homelessness to starting their own nonprofits. The students who manage to catch the attention of admissions officers overcome exceptional odds, but they should maintain some perspective.

However, many things in life — like landing a job at some Wal-Mart locations — are harder to achieve than getting into this prestigious university.

Ben Winsor contributed to the original version of this report.

A job at some Wal-Mart locations

Met with both merriment and protest, Wal-Mart came to Washington, D.C., at the end of 2013.

The store received more than 23,000 applications but hired just 600 associates, NBC Washington reported. That's a 2.6% acceptance rate — almost twice as selective as Harvard's.

While many Harvard graduates can expect a six-figure income, Wal-Mart cashiers pocket an average of $8.48 an hour, the Wall Street Journal has reported

The American dream

A recent report from researchers at Harvard and Berkeley Universities shows that in many major US cities, it's very hard to achieve a rags-to-riches success story.

The report analyzes the number of people who were born into the lowest income quintile but ended up in the highest income quintile. The results don't bode well for upward socioeconomic mobility.

The chances were below 5% in Atlanta; Charlotte, North Carolina; Jacksonville, Florida; Columbus, Ohio; Dayton, Ohio; Milwaukee; and Indianapolis.

Even at the top of the list, people in San Jose, California, showed just a 12.9% chance of living the American dream.

A job at Goldman Sachs

In 2014, Goldman Sachs hired just 3% of more than 267,000 job applicants.

It's no surprise so many people want to work there, as Fortune magazine named Goldman one of the 100 best places to work in 2015. Since the ranking began in 1984, Goldman is one of just five companies that made the list every year.

After taking a flight on Emirates, I never want to fly a domestic airline again

emirates airlines economy flight

I recently booked a flight from New York City to Milan for a quick getaway. Faced with the choice of flying Delta or Emirates, both of which had round-trip economy-class tickets for about $800, I quickly opted for the Middle Eastern airline.

Emirates, which is owned by Dubai's government, has exploded onto the US market in the past several years. It is regularly rated one of the top airlines in the world, and I was psyched to experience it on the eight-hour flight.

The trip did not disappoint. I ate salmon and saffron risotto, drank complimentary (and surprisingly decent) wine, and watched a bunch of movies, including the recent Oscar winners "Birdman" and "Whiplash."

Even before I boarded my flight from Milan to New York, I could tell this would be different from a flight on most domestic airlines. Any passenger — not just those in business class — could take a newspaper or magazine for the trip.

Freshly poured mimosas were available upon boarding, but unfortunately for me, those were reserved for business-class travelers.

The flowers hanging by the bathroom were a nice touch. They came down before takeoff.

37 incredible drone photos from across the globe that would be totally illegal today

Drones are everywhere from the battlefield to the backyards of America. For such a simple concept, the possibilities for how we can use drones is vast and still being explored.

One of the most interesting ways to utilize drone technology is photography. Photographer Amos Chapple knows this better than most. As soon as consumer drones came on the market, Chapple knew he needed one. After purchasing one and learning how to fly it, he began traveling the globe, photographing famous landmarks before such photography was made illegal.

"There was a window of about 18 months where it was possible to fly these things anywhere and people were excited to see it. I’m glad I made use of that time," Chapple told Business Insider.

Now, with drone use illegal in many of these locations, his collection of beautiful drone images are some of the only aerial photos of their type. Chapple shared many of them with us and told the stories behind his shots. Check out more on his site.

Photographer Amos Chapple captures the world’s most famous landmarks — from the Taj Mahal to the Kremlin — using a drone.

When the commercial drone first hit the market in 2013, Chapple says he sifted through new product reviews, searching for the right model to help his art take flight.

Finally, Chinese technology company DJI came out with the Phantom drone and Chapple was sold.

The 25 best medical schools in America

Johns Hopkins Medicine

When choosing where to apply to medical school, there are a ton of things to consider. Some schools specialize in research while others highlight patient care.

We asked a panel of 15 doctors with different backgrounds and specialties to weigh in. Each panelist listed which schools they believe train the best primary-care doctors based on their experience and professional opinion.

The panelists are affiliated with some of the best hospitals in the country, including the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Mount Sinai, and Boston Medical Center.

We broke ties using the schools' average Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) scores and acceptance rates.

The University of Washington took the No. 1 spot, followed by the University of California at San Francisco and the University of Wisconsin at Madison. While big state schools beating out Ivies for the top spots might seem counterintuitive, these schools line up with other primary-care rankings and show how doctors feel.

"The [state] schools have state support with a mission to produce primary-care physicians," said Dr. Ronald E. Drusin, a professor of medicine at Columbia. "They are not private, research-based schools."

25. University of Kansas Medical Center

Average MCAT score: 30

Acceptance rate: 8.5%

The University of Kansas Medical Center is the only medical school in the state. With a main campus in Kansas City, and two others in Salina and Wichita, KUMC offers a top-notch education at an affordable tuition. Graduates match into some of the best residency programs in the country, including Johns Hopkins Hospital and New York Presbyterian. More than half of the class of 2014 planned to become primary-care physicians.

24. Mayo Medical School

Average MCAT score: 33

Acceptance rate: 1.8%

Mayo Medical School is part of the famous Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Small class sizes and an emphasis on patient well-being in all areas of practice make Mayo graduates some of the best-trained medical professionals. After med school, 98% of Mayo grads report matching with one of their top residency program choices.

23. Boston University

Average MCAT score: 34

Acceptance rate: 2.9%

When Boston University School of Medicine began it was the first medical school to admit women. The class of 2014 matched to top residency programs, including the UC San Francisco Medical Center and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. About 37% of 2014 graduates matched in primary-care specialties.
