Meet the nomadic photographer who has been road-tripping with her dog around the US for the past 7 years

In 2008, Alison Turner quit her job in ad sales, hit the road with her rescue dog, Max, and didn't look back. Over the past seven years, Turner and Max have circled the US three times, driven over 100,000 miles, and made several trips to their favorite destination, the American Southwest.

“Ever since I can remember, I have been independent and curious,” Turner told Business Insider. “Being on the open road is a feeling I can’t get anywhere else. It’s a feeling of freedom,” Turner said.

“The first year is the hardest — if you get through that and want to continue, then the road is for you.” Though living out of a van isn't easy, Turner's GoWesty serves her well. "Everything you decide to bring along must have a function. There isn’t room for things you don’t use." Weather is an important factor, and Turner generally travels following the good kind. "What the weather is outside is what it will be in the van. I have camped in over 100 degrees and below freezing."

Photography has been an integral part of Turner’s travels. Since beginning her journey, Turner’s client list has grown, and her work has been shown in galleries across the US. Between her GoPro, Instagram, and DSLR, she’s documented and shared her journey, inspired by the people she’s met along the way, the sweeping landscapes, and, of course, Max.

Take a look ahead at some of Turner’s best images from the road.

Max, who has been with her since day one of her travels, is the subject of many of Turner's photographs.

He's also the deciding factor when it comes to where Turner goes, since she can stay only at national parks that allow dogs.

"Companion, goofball, and scruffy" are the three words Turner uses to describe Max. He's a constant source of entertainment and inspiration for Turner.

Today, the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization, or UNESCO, has a whopping total of 1,007 World Heritage Sites on its official list.

Places that receive the iconic UNESCO seal are chosen based on their cultural significance, their standing as a natural wonder, or both.

From the Rock Sites of Cappadocia, Turkey, made entirely from volcanic erosions, to Africa's Namib Sand Sea, the world's only coastal desert, here are 20 breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage Sites from around the world.

Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia is a volcanic landscape created entirely from erosion that eventually formed mountain ridges, valleys, and pinnacles nicknamed “fairy chimneys” across Cappadocia, Turkey.

Fast food chain Chick-fil-A is planning to expand in New York, BuzzFeed News reports

The chain announced in March that it's first New York restaurant would be located on 6th avenue and West 37th Street in the Midtown neighborhood of Manhattan.

Now Chick-fil-A is planning to open another restaurant near Rockefeller Center at 46th Street and 6th Avenue, and it's looking at additional locations in Manhattan’s Upper East Side and the Financial District, according to BuzzFeed.

The chain is also expanding in Long Island, with one location set to open in Port Jefferson in a couple months and other possible locations in Hicksville, Commack, and Westbury, Buzzfeed reports.

Chick-fil-A generates more than $5 billion in annual sales and recently surpassed KFC to become the top chicken fast food chain in the U.S.

The chain has 1,850 US restaurants primarily located in the Southeast.

Like its other locations, the New York restaurant will not open on Sundays.

"We are beyond excited about opening our first freestanding restaurant in New York," Chick-fil-A spokeswoman Carrie Kurlander told Crain's New York. "This location will allow us to serve fans who have been asking us to come to New York and to earn the opportunity to serve new customers."

There is a Chick-fil-A located in a dining hall on the campus of New York University in Manhattan, but it's not a full service restaurant and carries limited menu items.

The chain is best known for its chicken sandwich, which is typically served with waffle fries.

According to Chick-fil-A, it's "a boneless breast of chicken seasoned to perfection, hand-breaded, pressure cooked in 100% refined peanut oil and served on a toasted, buttered bun with dill pickle chips."

A breakfast version is served on a buttered biscuit.

While no one knows the secret sauce, copycat recipes call for the chicken breast to be brined in pickle juice.

These charts show that any meaningful opposition to gay marriage will soon die out

In 2001 the Netherlands legalized same-sex marriage, then came Belgium in 2003, South Africa in 2006, and Argentina in 2010

With Friday's historic Supreme Court ruling, the United States has done the same.

Given that the American Psychiatric Association classified homosexuality as a mental illness until 1973, that's quite the turnaround.

As the Pew Research Center has documented in their polling, the stance on same-sex marriage in America has undergone a radical transformation in the past 12 years.

In the words of Time reporter David Von Drehle, same-sex marriage is an "increasingly uncontroversial controversy."

If these trends hold, it looks like any meaningful opposition to same-sex marriage in America will soon die out.

Festivities across the country started just moments after the ruling. Take a look at how people celebrated the victory from Washington DC to San Francisco.

This $30 shirt is a perfect example of why men love Uniqlo

0

uniqlooxford

With its style, quality, fit, affordability, and convenience, Uniqlo is winning men over in droves.

One of the best examples of Uniqlo's appeal is its now signature oxford cloth button-down shirt (OCBD).

At $30 (or $20 in the summer) it's a neatly folded representation of the brand itself.

Here's why:

  • It's simple. There aren't any fancy complications, loops, folds, cuts, or creases. The shirt comes in five shades, with no special color treatment or designs. It's just a well-made staple that's incredibly easy to wear.
  • It fits well. You can choose from two fits: slim or regular. For skinny guys, I can't think of a better fitting shirt in this price category. The chest and body is slim, the tail of the shirt hits at the right point, and the sleeves are the perfect length. It's clear that a lot of thought went into the making of this shirt.
  • It's high quality. I have one that's going on four years old. I wear it with regularity and it still shows zero signs of wear.
  • It's cheap. Everyday shirts aren't something you need to splurge on. It's good to fill the gaps in your closet with an affordable shirt that you can wear without worrying too much about it. At $30, the OCBD can easily be replaced.

I'm not the only one who's singing this shirt's praises. There are 62 reviews and an average customer rating of 4.5 stars for the OCBD on Uniqlo's website.

On Reddit's r/malefashionadvice board, many OCBD threads have been started; guys are even looking for alternatives to the shirt since it has become such a dominant staple.

Do your wardrobe a service and pick one up.

J.K. Rowling reading Harry Potter at White House

Big news for “Harry Potter” fans everywhere — J.K. Rowling has announced she will be extending the wizarding universe with a new play.

The author took to Twitter to share with her followers on Friday that she has written a play called “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” that will be coming to London’s West End in the summer of 2016.

Rowling made the announcement on the anniversary of the first book’s — “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” — publication date in the United Kingdom 18 years ago.

“I will tell a new story, which is the result of a collaboration between writer Jack Thorne, director John Tiffany, and myself,” Rowling tweeted on Friday.

“I don’t want to say too much more, because I don’t want to spoil what I know will be a real treat for fans,” she continued. “However, I can say that it is not a prequel!”

It will be producedby Sonia Friedman Productions, Colin Callender’s Playground Entertainment, and Harry Potter Theatrical Productions, according to the new website for the production.

Rowling says the new extension into Harry’s universe isn’t a novel because a play was the “only proper medium for the story.” Intriguing!

Though no one knows what the plot will officially be, The Daily Mail reporter Baz Bamigboye wrote Thursday that it would focus on Harry’s parents and the events that happened before they were killed by Lord Voldemort.

This seems unlikely given what Rowling tweeted Friday about the play not being a prequel.

Reading Harry potterFans immediately began favoriting and retweeting J.K. Rowling’s tweets. Her original tweet announcing the title of the play has been retweeted over 27,000 times and favorited over 33,000 times.

Fans were also tweeting their support and excitement at the author.

A few people were even asking J.K. Rowling if they could be in the play itself. The Daily Mail reported that casting has already begun and tickets will go on sale by the fall.

Rowling is famous among her fandom for releasing new information about the “Harry Potter” universe, including character backstories, middle names, and storylines after the book series ended both on Twitter as well as through her website Pottermore.

harry potter gambonMost famously, Rowling said at a book reading in 2007 that Harry’s headmaster Albus Dumbledore was gay. Her website Pottermore has also delved into the lives of characters like Dolores Umbridge, Professor McGonagall, and most recently Harry's relatives the Dursleys that he lived with after his parents were murdered.

A certified pilot turned Instagram star took these stunning aerial photos around the world

Ever since he was a kid, Adam Senatori  dreamed of being a pilot.

After fulfilling that dream by becoming a commercial airline captain, Senatori was unfortunately laid off and forced to take a buyout. Faced with a new challenge, Adam looked for other opportunities and began making the transition from commercial aviator to commercial photographer.

Senatori tells Business Insider that it was his iPhone that first sparked the idea to take pictures from the air. “After I left the airlines and was flying for fun, I started taking some quick shots with my iPhone and that’s when it triggered that I had something unique. I could fly, or had friends that could fly me, and take photos,” he says.

Through the Instagram account he started five years ago, Senatori's unique images have found a new, wider audience. He was one of the first photographers that the company featured on the Instagram blog, and he’s gained around 850,000 followers. While social media usually moves at lightning speed, Senatori's workflow is usually much slower, as he usually shoots with a Medium Format Digital Hasselblad H4D.

Don’t worry though, he never pilots and photographs at the same time. “Anytime I’m in the air, we either take the windows off, or if it’s a helicopter, we always take the doors off so I that I can have a clean shot,” he told us.

Check out some of his jaw-dropping images below, with a selection of quotes from our conversation with him.

Senatori lives in Madison, Wisconsin, where he grew up. “With O’Hare Airport in the backyard, I can pretty much go anywhere in the world by driving an hour and a half. It’s just easy to stay here, it’s easy living," he says.

Senatori explains that both of his parents were involved in the arts, adding, "We had a very creative household. Every day was drawing or learning or making something. That was incredibly instrumental in what I do now.”

As a child, Senatori 's mother taught art history and was always showing him paintings. That early education has served as a major inspiration later in life. He explains, "I always remembered how 17th and 18th century Dutch painters depicted scenes in the morning or evening, when the shadows were long and the colors were golden. That always stuck with me.”

These gay Texas shopkeepers closed early to get married, and the note they left went viral while they said 'I do'

Earlier today, the two men who own Red Pegasus Comics and Games in Dallas, Texas, put a sign on their door that the shop would be opening late.

Their reason: the pair was headed to the courthouse to finally get married.

The couple, Kenneth Denson and Gabriel Mendez, didn't even know whether gay marriage would pass today. But they crossed their fingers and headed to a Dallas courthouse early this morning in anticipation of the Supreme Court's ruling.

"We had a feeling today was going to be the day, so we headed to the courthouse an hour before the ruling," Kenneth Denson, one of the store's owners, told Business Inisder.

Here's what the sign looked like on the shop's door.

The picture became popular on the /r/pics subreddit, where it has scored 5,093 upvote points since being shared around noon on Friday.

Here's a picture of the shop owners waiting in line at the courthouse. Twitter users recognized them from their shirts, which are emblazoned with the Red Pegasus logo. As evidenced by the photo, they weren't the only ones hoping today would be the day.

"After about an hour of waiting, somebody yelled, 'We got it!' and the whole place just went nuts," Denson explained.

That was when the real waiting began. Denson and Mendez stood patiently while the district attorney and county clerk discussed marriage licenses.

"It was completely exciting," Denson said of the long day. "We'd already waited for years, so what difference was another hour at that point?"

After two hours, the couple finally got their license and were legally married by a judge.

Here's a tweet from couple, who used the popular hashtag #LOVEWINS to share their news.

People on social media were excited to congratulate the couple and share in celebrating their big day. One Twitter user, Kristin Bomba, even offered to bake the couple a wedding cake.

It appears that Bomba made good on her cake offer and baked the couple a celebratory dessert. Here's a picture of the wedding cake.

In addition to the wedding cake, the couple has recieved many other gifts and well wishes from complete strangers.

"There are emails it will take the rest of the night to respond to and somebody I've never seen before just walked onto our front porch with flowers," Denson said. "Three people in the UK have said that they are sending us gifts and that we should know that we are loved. It's amazing."

As for the store, Red Pegasus Games and Comics is officially open for business. Here's a tweet the couple shared celebrating their nuptials.

Here's how Li Ka-shing became the richest man in Hong Kong

0
0

Li Ka ShingHong Kong billionaire Li Ka-shing may no longer be the richest man in Asia, but with a current estimated net worth of $20.1 billion, his wealth is still nothing to sneeze at.

Li Ka-shing has an incredible rags-to-riches story. He was forced to drop out of school as a child to support his family. But today he is one of the world's richest men. He opened his first factory at the age of 22 and within a few years saw great success as a manufacturer, property developer, business magnate, and investor.

He's now become a major investor in disruptive technology. He was one of the first big investors in Facebook, and his most recent big acquisition was British telecom company O2, which he purchased at the end of March for $15 billion.

Li Ka-shing was saddled with financial responsibility from a young age. After his family fled to Hong Kong from southern China during WWII, his father died of tuberculosis. He had to leave school before the age of 16 to work in a factory.

Source: Business Insider

For almost four years during the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong, he sent 90% of his pay to his mother. Perhaps his early success as a breadwinner taught him the generous values that have made him famous for his philanthropy today.

Li was clearly influenced by his experience of working as a child. “It doesn’t matter how strong or capable you are; if you don’t have a big heart, you will not succeed,” he said.

Americans are obsessed with matcha tea — but we're drinking it all wrong

0

matcha

Matcha is blowing up.

According to Google Trends, the search term "matcha" started to spike in January 2014 and hit an all-time high this May. Everyone's trying out the antioxidant-filled tea that's been a staple in Japan for centuries.

But, thanks to chains like Starbucks and The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, a lot of American matcha drinkers have no clue what real matcha actually tastes like.

You see, matcha has a unique balance of vegetal (think seaweed or edamame), bitter, and malty flavors. To appeal to the American palate — which hasn't acquired a taste for matcha's bitter, seaweed-y side — many cafés use sugar-laced matcha powder and steamed milk to make the trendy matcha latte, in addition to other treacly concoctions.

And not only are we masking its flavors and jacking it with sugar, we're also drinking matcha differently than it's traditionally enjoyed in the East, as I learned one recent afternoon over a bowl (not cup) of the algae-colored tea with Kathy YL Chan, my matcha teacher.

She taught me the basics and then referred me to several tea spots where I could continue my matcha exploration.

SEE ALSO: This is matcha — the trendy green tea that could make coffee obsolete

Meet Kathy YL Chan, a New Yorker by way of Hawaii who has been drinking matcha for as long as she can remember. She's a tea writer, importer, and all-around expert.

In addition to writing about matcha and its rich cultural history for websites like Eater and Condé Nast Traveler, Chan also has an eponymous line of matcha.

The first thing she taught me is that matcha should be sipped from a bowl, not a mug or to-go cup.

Drinking matcha is a sensory experience: you cup the bowl with your hands, take it to your lips, and breath in all those luscious matcha fumes as you sip. The bowl acts as a sort of dome over your nose and mouth; you can't get that from a teacup. Here, Chan sifts the finely milled tea leaf powder into a ceramic bowl.

Matcha cafés may be popping up left and right, but Chan prefers to drink her matcha at home.

She tells me that matcha is an all-day beverage in Asian households: "They drink it in the morning, afternoon, after dinner." People also use it during meditation to help focus. "Lots of times when I panic, I'll make matcha," she says. It has an adaptogenic quality: if you're frazzled, it calms you; if you're feeling sluggish, it energizes you.
