This hyped-up shirt fabric is touted as the perfect solution to a hot summer day — but it's a nightmare to actually wear

linenshirts

Every year, when it gets hot outside, we hear the same story from our favorite clothing brands. They claim to be selling the "perfect summer shirt."

What they're actually selling is a lie.

The promise of linen (made from fibers derived from the flax plant) is that it will keep you dry and stop you from overheating. For the most part, linen accomplishes that goal.

But there is a cost that isn't quite as transparent as the shirts may be.

First and foremost: the cooling proprieties of linen are a double-edged sword. Sure, they work while you're outside. But you better hope you brought a jacket once you enter any place with air conditioning, as you will quickly start shivering.

Because the material is so breathable, it's also doesn't insulate at all. That can create some uncomfortableness in places with rip roaring A/C. Out of the fying pan into the freezer.

Linen aficionados will tell you that the whole point of linen is that it's cool and effortless. They'll use an Italian word like "sprezzatura" ("studied carelessness") and explain how that excuses wrinkle-prone linen from joining the rest of shirt fabrics, which play it straight and have a positive relationship with the ironing board.

Unfortunately, a wrinkled shirt still looks wrinkled, even if it's stylishly and intentionally wrinkled. Due to the proprieties of linen, it's virtually impossible for a wearer to remain kempt. The shirt always looks fresh out of the dirty laundry pile — even when it's fresh out of the dryer. Though some are able to pull of this look, most are best off avoiding it.

Another terrible property of linen is how it feels on the skin. Allegedly, it gets softer as you wash it. But as the proud (?) owner of three linen shirts, I've found that's not quit the case. My shirts are still as scratchy and uncomfortable as they were off the rack.

In order to avoid this uncomfortable situation, you have to splurge for really expensive linen. Another solution is to go with a linen and cotton blend. However, depending on the percentages, this would negate all or most of the supposed benefits of wearing linen in the first place.

Instead of jumping on the linen bandwagon, embrace the ubiquity of cotton. A lightweight cotton insulates better, feels better on the skin, and is even cheaper than linen. And it'll work just as well to keep you from overheating.

If you're a bit more adventurous, seersucker is also a good choice. No longer relegated to the preps, seersucker now comes in plenty of other colors and patterns besides just the classic striped pale blue and white.

4 items every modern gentleman needs this spring

$

0

Spring is here. Time to upgrade your wardrobe.

This season, we recommend picking up a linen-cotton suit, a weekend bomber jacket, a "new" going out shirt, and grown up shorts.

We've put together a list of our favorite items from Frank & Oak.

spring style men suitThings start to get hot and sticky come springtime, so we recommend getting a linen blend suit. Linen is extremely breathable, which basically means that you won't sweat through your suit.

Tack on a light colored tie, stylish shades, and a professional briefcase to complete the look.

(A)Laurier Glen Check cotton linen suit jacket, $185; (B)Laurier Glen Check trousers, $105; (C)cotton chambray tie, $36; (D)Illesteva Hundson sunglasses, $220; (E) genuine Italian leather messenger bag, $245.

Screen Shot 2015 04 13 at 3.47.16 PMThe bomber jacket took men's fashion by storm last year — and it hasn't lost its cool yet. For the spring, we recommend checking out a gray option like the one above.

Pair it with some high-top sneakers, sunglasses with colored lenses, and a navy weekend bag.

(A)Kingston bomber jacket, $125; (B)Illesteva Hundson sunglasses, $220, (C)Dylan denim in dark blue, $75; (D)Nylon travel duffel, $125; (E)Apollo leather high top sneakers, $155.

going out shirt men's fashion springFor some reason, guys in the mid-2000's went through a tragic "going out shirt" phase. You know the look: bright stripes shirt, un-tucked, maybe with a tuft of chest hair peaking out. Thankfully, everyone has finally come around.

That being said, we're all for a new version of a going out shirt — a solid, navy or charcoal button down that works for everything from date night to beers with bros.

(A)Cotton snap button shirt in navy, $65; (B)Leather bill fold wallet, $56; (C)Newport chinos, $55; (D)Perforated leather sneakers, $145; (E)Illesteva Leonard sunglasses, $178.

Screen Shot 2015 04 13 at 3.45.04 PM

As soon as temperatures rise, everyone busts out shorts. But just because your knees are showing, doesn't mean you have to look young or sloppy.

Pair the shorts with a white button down and knit pullover. Let the buttondown stick out from under the pullover to add a casual feel.

(A)Funnel neck knit pullover in Deep Well, $55; (B)7.5" Travis Oxford shorts in Alloy, $55; (C)Odessa chambray shirt in off-white, $45; (D)Perforated leather sneakers in navy, $145; (E)Super People sunglasses in beige stone, $150.

Business customs vary tremendously around the world.

CT Business Travel created a helpful infographic that breaks down different business customs around the world.

This infographic explains everything from how firm a handshake should be in different countries around the world to how people should be addressed. It also discusses food etiquette, body language, and style of communications.

In Denmark, for example, you're expected to finish your plate at business meals. And in Russia, smiling is a sign of insincerity. Meanwhile, in Israel the typical work week is Sunday to Thursday so don't expect to conduct business on a Friday.

See the full infographic below to learn more about these cultural differences.

Hamilton pool American Express Travelrecently released its list of the top 10 most popular cities to visit this summer in the United States.

To make this list, the travel company looked at the top destinations that its customers have booked trips to this year and compared the results to last year's findings.

From the silky sands of San Juan's beaches to the surreal hiking trails of Richmond, Virginia, here are the US cities people want to see this summer.

10. HOUSTON, TEXAS: In the summer, you'll see stunning bat migrations from Houston's Waugh bridge. An estimated 250,000 bats call the bridge home, emerging to swarm the skies when the weather is warm.

9. PENSACOLA, FLORIDA: Pensacola Beach, named one of the top 10 beaches in the United States by TripAdvisor, offers open-air bars and access to the longest protected seashore in the nation, the Gulf Islands National Seashore. In the summer there are concerts in the area almost four times a week.

8. NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA: Summer is a celebration of food in New Orleans, where you'll find the the Tales of the Cocktail festival with mixologists from around the world, the Creole Tomato Festival celebrating one of the staples of the city, and the Oyster Fest, offering up raw, charbroiled, and truffle versions of the tasty treat.

Built in 1959, this mid-century house features three bedrooms, three full bathrooms, and a fully-stocked fallout shelter created during the Cold War-era.

If you're in the market for a new home, want to live in Texas, and fear a future apocalypse, this property is for you.

The one-story ranch sits on about a half an acre of land, replete with large, shady live oaks and a view of Austin.

The backside of the home includes an open porch and a spacious backyard. Walk down a flight of steep concrete steps set in limestone to access the bomb shelter, which was created by a retired Air Force colonel.

Fears of nuclear bombs during the late 1950s and '60s sparked many Americans to build shelters in order to survive radioactive fallout. The shelter is stocked with about 1-2 weeks worth of supplies, including canned soup and crackers. This was the estimated amount of time it would take for nuclear residue to clear.

I'm moving out of New York City, and these are the things I'm checking off my bucket list before I go

daybreaker dance melia robinson

Despite a recent Business Insider headline ("If you're moving to San Francisco, this housing flyer will make you want to cry"), I have decided to trade in the City That Never Sleeps for the City By The Bay.

I've lived in Brooklyn for more than two years, and I never thought I would leave. But alas — love, year-round room-temperature weather, and something called the "Sushirrito" enticed me to pursue greener (though drier) pastures on the West Coast.

Before I move to San Francisco at the end of the month, I made a "bucket list" of all the things I've always wanted to do in New York, but never made time for. With weeks to go, I'm glad to say I've crossed off all 32 of these activities.

Whether you're visiting New York for the first time or leaving it, you won't want to miss these classic city rituals.

First: A trip down memory lane. One of the first things I did when I moved to New York City was take a walk on the High Line, a refurbished rail line suspended over Manhattan's far west side. I had to visit the park once more before my move to the west coast.

I was fortunate that the new downtown Whitney Museum of American Art opened before my departure. In addition to a magnificent art collection, the 8-story behemoth offers panoramic views of the city, including the Empire State Building, Freedom Tower, and Statue of Liberty.

It blew my mind how easy it was to get to Coney Island by subway, after hearing for years about its kitschy carnival games and famous food stands. I rode the infamous Cyclone, a rickety wooden roller coaster that celebrates its 89th birthday this year.

22 American craft breweries every beer lover should know

Pliny the Elder, Russian River

The recent explosion of craft breweries in the US has shifted the beer industry's attention to quality, not quantity. May 11-17 is American Craft Beer Week, which means it's the perfect time to discover a new artisanal brew.

We found the 22 coolest American craft brewers making waves in the industry.

We went by the Brewers Association's definition of "craft brewery," which is a brewery that produces no more than 6 million barrels a year.

Melia Robinson contributed to a previous version of this article.

5 Rabbit Cervecería

Bedford Park, Illinois

Located outside Chicago, the first Latin American-style brewery, or cervecería, in the country infuses its brews with ancho chili, piloncillo cane sugar, and other Latin flavors.

5 Rabbit was inspired by an Aztec myth, and the names of the beers all coincide in some way with the Aztec calendar. The brewmasters believe in enjoying and savoring life, so every few weeks they publish a recipe on their website that would pair well with one of their beers.

Alchemist Brewery

Waterbury, Vermont

Alchemist sells just one beer: Heady Topper, which is found only in Vermont. They say they'd rather focus on doing one beer perfectly instead of doing many imperfectly.

Heady Topper is a double IPA brewed with a proprietary blend of six hops that blend together to make a great beer.

AleSmith Brewing Company

San Diego, California

AleSmith is celebrating its twentieth anniversary this year, and what better way to do so than to launch a new tasting room and brew system capable of producing 100,000 barrels? AleSmith 2.0, as the brewery is calling its renovation, is set to open this summer and plans to expand production globally.

The brewery's beers are chiefly inspired by European styles, famous for its "Wee Heavy" Scotch ale, Speedway Stout, and namesake Anvil ESB, after its anvil logo.

17 common household items you never realized had an expiration date

$

Everyone knows to check the expiration dates on their favorite foods, but what about on helmets or child car seats?

In a recent AskReddit thread, Reddit users shared the most common household products that go bad that no one usually thinks to check.

Chances are, many of these things are sitting around your home long past their “best by” date.

Keep reading to see what you should probably throw out and replace.

1. Rubbing alcohol wipes

alcohol wipes first aid kit

“I've opened up so many of those little squares only to find them dry as a regular tissue." - 67_impala

“Little-known fact: Everything is permeable to the right substances. It's called diffusion. The foil around the napkin can't keep the water and isopropyl alcohol in the package because it seeps through the foil.” - XGC75

2. Child car seats

child baby car seat

“The plastics and foam deteriorate over time and no longer protect the child. I've seen people keep them for years in their garage. They're actually stamped with a date.” - PopeBud

These seats will typically stay okay for six to 10 years, but should be replaced if they have been in any accidents as that could reduce the effectiveness.

3. Fire extinguishers

fire extinguisher

“Some time in between 5-15 years for them to be replaced. You should try to have them serviced annually. You should check the gauge monthly.” - thatguyfromnewyork

4. Sunscreen

sunscreen on the face of a girl at the beach

“Every single time I have used the previous year's sunscreen on my children they have completely broken out in a horrible rash. Like, you-need-to-be-seen-TODAY type rash. It was the second time this happened that the pediatrician told me he sees this every year, and to get new sunscreen. This is why I also don't casually borrow sunscreen from family members at our beach to use. I can't guarantee it's new, and it's not worth the doctor visit.” - JuneFreakinCleaver

5. Receipts

Receipts

“Once had a good guy employee of Auto Zone recommend making a photocopy of the receipt for a new car battery. He said he knew the ink fades much faster than the replacement warranty would last.” - mishellular

If you'll need the receipt anytime in the next year, it's worth making or scanning a copy for safe keeping.

6. Makeup

makeup bag products beauty

“Makeup products trap a lot of bacteria when you dip something back into its casing or just from being exposed to the air while someone is applying it. It can cause a lot of breakouts, or even inflame your eye, since the majority of everyday makeup is used on your eyes. The harsh reality is that most makeup products should be thrown out at least every 6 months.” - MymlanOhlin

Most makeup products should be replaced between three and six months — see a full run down here.

7. Books and paper

books

“Books/paper. People tend to forget that paper is a biodegradable product, and moisture or sunlight will wreak havoc on them. Never keep books in an area adjoining a bathroom (the moisture from showers can damage the pages and cause mold). Likewise, if possible, try to keep books away from rooms with windows. Sunlight (even indirect) will speed decay.

"If you have historically important documents or books, the best thing to do is keep them in a climate controlled room that has no windows - with the door shut, and if at all possible, use a small dehumidifier.” - Sloopieone

8. Bleach

bleach

“The sodium hypochlorite in liquid bleach literally turns into salt water over time.” - beatdrop128

Replace your bleach every 12 months or so, or more often if it's losing its effectiveness.

9. Gas

pour gas into car empty tank

“We had a training on it back when I was a firefighter (going over our two and four stroke engines). In about 90 days the gasoline and ethanol will separate, kind of like the oil based dressings in the store. Then after about 6 months (maybe a year) the gasoline expires. That's why it's important to use fuel stabilizers if you're putting a motorcycle or lawn mower away for the winter, or a snowblower away for the summer, or if a car is in storage.” - TheVoiceOfRiesen

10. Flour

sifting flour baking

"Someone else has already mentioned flour, which should be kept in a sealed airtight container to avoid getting weevils, but some flours (other than wheat) need to be refrigerated. Primarily corn meal and almond flour, as the oils in them can go rancid. And some oils (like walnut oil) need to be kept in the fridge for the same reason. If you have specialty flour and oil, the packaging will tell you how to store it, but this is something that many people don't know to look for.” - NovemberWednesday

11. HVAC filter

hvac filter for air conditioning or heating

“Your heating/cooling unit in the garage has an air filter to clean your air before bringing it into the house. You should change it every year, but most people don't even know it exists. It's really easy though — go to the unit, there should be a latched door on it, open it up, and you can see the filter. Then, go to the store and buy the same size, put the new one in, chuck the old one out. Only costs like ten bucks.” - chrisboshisaraptor

12. Fire and carbon monoxide alarms/detectors

carbon monoxide detector

"Not just the batteries. Older smoke/fire/CO detectors don't work nearly as well as newer ones. You don't need the super expensive ones, but I wouldn't buy the cheapest ones either.” - Edward_Scout

All smoke alarms should be replaced after 10 years, according to the National Fire Protection Assocation.

13. Helmets

biking bike on brooklyn bridge nyc

“Most manufacturers recommend you replace one every 3-5 years; or after a serious trauma” - ChikkaChiChi

14. Power Strips

power strip cord

“They go bad after about 7 years and are one of the most likely household items to cause an electrical fire.” - MXXIV

15. Batteries

corroded battery

When left in storage for long periods of time can corrode, start to leak acid and ruin expensive electronics. I had an Original Gameboy in mint condition ruined by old batteries.” - BipolarBears87

Don't simply throw these in the trash — after your batteries have corroded or have gone bad, it's best to take them to a household hazardous waste site.

16. Perfume

perfume bottles

“The essential oils denature and the scent changes. This is the reason behind the 'old lady perfume' smell. They keep bottles for years and don't notice the gradual change. About 2-3 years is the practical max. If you haven't finished the bottle by then, toss it.” - Metalhed69

17. Rubber bands

Switzerland is not staying neutral on bike sharing.

Switzerland Tourism is offering all New York City visitors and residents the chance to hop aboard the blue Citi Bikes for free on May 14.

It's all to celebrate Bike-to-Work Week.

The stunt serves as an ad for Switzerland tourism. The press release notes that "Switzerland is the place to go for anyone who wants to swap NYC’s high-rise buildings for stunning mountain scenery and city bike lanes for well-marked cycling and mountain bike routes which crisscross a land full of surprises."

However, you won't be able to simply grab a bike and roam freely on the island of Manhattan.

You'll still need to input your credit card to the machine, which will apply a temporary hold to your card. And if you go over the standard 30-minute time limit, you will get charged for it.

I was dreading getting my New York State driver's license renewed — but the DMV totally impressed me

$

dmv midtown

I'm coming up on two dates that fill most people with anxiety and dread — my thirtieth birthday and the expiration of my driver's license.

One of those, I'll just grin and bear. The other was a surprisingly easy and stress-free experience.

I officially changed my state residency from New Jersey to New York when I turned 25, so I was already in the New York State Department of Motor Vehicle's online system and fortunately, I met the eligibility requirements to renew online, saving me a trip to the local DMV office.

Anyone with a New York State license can renew online within two years of their previous license expiration, unless they want a new photo, have a suspended license, or fall into a few other restricted categories.

For me, the only hitch was an eye test — I've worn glasses since fifth grade, and needed to provide an updated vision test to the DMV. But even that was a breeze.

The DMV offers a list of vision test locations, so I booked an appointment with an ophthalmologist near my office and watched as she logged into the DMV website immediately after completing my eye exam and submitted my results. There was no paper work, and no additional vision test fee (other than the co-pay for my annual eye exam).

By the time I logged onto the DMV's website a few hours later, my eye test had been uploaded and I just needed to answer a few questions about my health and current address before paying the $80.50 fee and hitting "complete."

dmvSeven business days later, I had a new driver's license in my hand.

In New York, at least, the DMV — long a punch line — seems to have gotten its act together when it comes to customer service, and has entered the digital era. The state unveiled a revamped website in February 2014, allowing residents to renew licenses and vehicle registrations online, and to make reservations to skip the lines at their local DMV offices.

According to the DMV, average wait-times at its locations around the state were down to 30 minutes, a 58% decrease from before the website and appointment service launched.

Perhaps the strongest sign that that the once-dreaded DMV has turned a corner are the Yelp reviews. Here are just a few recent ones from offices around the city:

"believe I just broke a world record for the fastest nicest DMV experience ever. MAKE A RESERVATION ONLINE. I had spent the whole weekend sulking about my lost license plate and with extra monday morning blues to think i'd be spending half my work day in purgatory to return the remaining plate and  get a whole new registration.  But NO!   Instead I am amazed with how painless this was." — Chelsea D. at the Midtown West DMV

"'yay i'm a fan' -- I can't believe that my four star review yields that response to a DMV. But it's true. How can it be true you ask? Here is how. Appointment. Make an appointment. If you do, you wont wait but a little while. How long you ask? I waited a grant total of 4 minutes." — Evan H. at the East Harlem DMV

"I am AMAZED at how wonderful and efficient this place is. I made a reservation on the day of for 1pm to replace my license. Walked in at 12:45 and was greeted with a smile. My number was called at 1:02 and I walked out of there at 1:09. I never thought I would ever be able to say how wonderful it was to go to the DMV in NYC. Great customer service and very efficient!!!" — Farzin H. at the Financial District DMV

A representative for the department said that in addition to the Yelp reviews, the DMV had also seen an increase in feedback on social media, specifically Facebook and Twitter.

When I tweeted about my experience the morning after receiving my license, I almost immediately received a response:

My new license expires in eight years. I'm (almost) excited to see what new tricks the DMV has in store.
