Parents of a one-year-old were criticized by the internet after a demanding list of acceptable birthday gifts for their child went viral

$

A demanding email for a one-year-old’s birthday party is going viral on Reddit.

Reddit user razz32 shared the birthday email that his coworker had received from the parents on /r/pics.

demanding baby invitation email

In the email, the parents request four specific gifts, no more books since their baby “hates when we try reading to him,” and no personalized clothing with names since it’s “the #1 thing that leads to kidnapping, so we don’t need to broadcast [name redacted]’s name on clothing or toys."

If party guests decide to purchase the baby something that isn't on the list — at any time, not just on the baby's birthday — they must include a gift receipt, the parents write.

Redditors immediately pounced on the email, comparing it to a court summons and mocking the official tone

They also joked about what the worst possible present would be, based on the email’s instructions. “Personalized books with no receipt,” was a stellar option from the original poster razz32.

It's possible this recommended list of gifts was requested by family members who were unsure of what to get little baby [name redacted], similar to a wedding registry. The two-gift-per-household limit also implies that this particular family is big on superfluous gift-giving. Still, the email's wording is intense.

The worst (or best) part of the email is that after requesting a "water table," play tunnel, play tent, and "The Cheerios Play Book,” the parents earnestly add, “If you are unable to get these items, please let us know so that we can buy them right away for him."

Because who could live without a Step2 Tropical Island Resort table?

water tableIn closing, the internet’s new favorite helicopter parents write, “By the way, a formal invite from [name redacted] will be arriving in your mailboxes soon…”

Those ellipses really add a sense of dread.

Here’s a full transcription of the email below:

Subject: [Redacted name] birthday list

With [name redacted]’s birthday coming up, we thought we’d ask for 4 items that he will really get a lot of use out of in the coming months. I provided my mom and sister-in-law [name redacted] with a list of 4 other items [name redacted] would like for his birthday so that they can buy from their list and avoid duplication. We're asking for gifts only from grandparents and the direct aunt/uncle for [name redacted]'s birthday party, and similar to Christmas, would like to restrict it to 2 items total per household.

[Name redacted]’s birthday list for the [redacted] side of the family is:

-Water Table (specifically this unit because of how it drains): http://www.walmart.com/ip/20439811?wmispartner=wlpa&adid=22222222227014861840&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=40330171352&wl4=&wl5=pla&wl6-78288290912&veh=sem

- Play Tunnel: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90192014/

- Play Tent: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10206883/

-Fill in the Missing Cheerios Book: http://www.rightstart.com/the-cheerios-play-book-board-book.html?utm_source=google&utm+medium=shopping&gclid=CMTo2MSn8cQCFe1j7AodskcASQ

If you are unable to get these items, please let us know so that we can buy them right away for him.

A few other important items:

- If you choose to get [name redacted] something that isn't on this list, anytime regardless of birthdays or holidays, please be sure to always include a receipt going forward. When we return items without receipts, we only get about 50% of the value, so it is like throwing money away if you don't include a receipt with the gifts. With formula costing us $80 a week, it is always nice to be able to return items that he doesn’t need to get formula instead.

- We would suggest no more books beyond the one Cheerios cited above. Right now, [name redacted] has 32 board books on his shelf, and 25 additional books waiting for him in storage once he is 3+ years of age. (And at this point, he hates when we try reading to him.)

- Please refrain from any personalized gifts that would be used outside of the house. Clothing with names is the #1 thing that leads to kidnapping, so we don't need to broadcast [name redacted] name on clothing or toys.

Please let us know if you have any questions about any items not on this list that you are considering purchasing and we can let you know if we already have it or if it is in storage waiting for him.

By the way, a formal invite from [name redacted] will be arriving in your mailboxes soon…

The most interesting men in the world

Most Interesting Man in the World, Dos Equis

You've probably seen the Dos Equis commercials that feature The Most Interesting Man In The World, a dapper, salt-and-pepper-haired gentleman who "received a standing ovation from a juror's box" and "taught canaries in the art of falconry," among a Bible-thick list of other impossible accomplishments.

This Dos Equis-drinking gent is only a fantasy, but in real life, people like him exist — and we found 20 of them.

Anthony Bourdain travels the world in search of exotic food and drink.

The Emmy Award-winning, bestselling book-writing Bourdain will always be, first and foremost, a food lover, and he takes his boyhood-instilled love of exploring the world through food on the road with his Emmy-winning show "Parts Unknown."

Bourdain is the epitome of a bad boy with a softer side. The now-clean heroin addict still enjoys a good drink, but has stubbed out his last cigarette now that he has a daughter to think about. He's very vocal about the stresses of being a chef, which comes partly from his own experience at one of New York's premier restaurants.

His competitive jiu jitsu fighter wife got Bourdain into jiu jitsu himself, and he has already earned some stripes on his belt. He has also co-written a comic for Marvel, and started his own publishing company.

Brian May is a rock 'n' roll legend who's also an astrophysicist and animal rights activist.

Real men don't eat meat. When Queen's lead guitarist Brian May learned about the cruelties of factory farming, he gave up eating meat and became the voice of the voiceless.

He's still an active supporter of four-legged creatures (especially badgers), as well as a doctor of astrophysics.

May was pursuing a Ph.D at Imperial College in London, but when Queen took off he quit to write and play for one of the most influential rock bands of all time. He returned to Imperial College in '06 to complete his degree, and worked as visiting researcher in astronomy, and then chancellor emeritus, at the school. He has co-authored two books: "Bang! The Complete History of the Universe," and "A Village Lost and Found," the latter of which was inspired by his passion for 3D stereo photography.

Billionaire Tesla founder Elon Musk is the inspiration for "Iron Man."

Like the movie hero he inspired, Elon Musk thinks up seemingly impossible inventions and makes them possible.

Musk started an all-digital payment system, PayPal, and sold it for $1.5 billion. He started a space transportation company. He built luxury electric cars and solar panels. He conceptualized a high-speed travel system between LA and San Francisco, and aspires to colonize Mars.

But Musk is known for his lavish lifestyle almost as much as for his ideas. He owns a 20,000-square-foot home in Bel Air, California, and one of the cars from a James Bond film, which he bought to convert into a submarine. And when (or if) Musk has down time, he loves playing video games and reading.

This meditation teacher has an amazing explanation — and solution — for why so many of us can’t escape the voice in our heads

Ethan Nichtern_Color_

Like most New Yorkers, Ethan Nichtern spends a lot of time talking about commuting.

But he's not complaining about the subway.

Nichtern, who's a senior teacher in Shambhala Buddhism, uses "the commute" as a metaphor for how people approach their lives — schlepping from job to job and relationship to relationship, hoping for something better to happen.

In his new book "the Road Home," he lays out an alternative: actually becoming comfortable with the discomforts of being a human being, mainly through the means of meditation.

For Nichtern, the practice isn't a means to being more focused at work or getting better sleep or even becoming happier. In a conversation with Business Insider, he explained why.

Here's a condensed and edited version of the transcript of that conversation below.

BUSINESS INSIDER: Why would you say that most of us are "commuting" through our lives?

ETHAN NICHTERN: A commute is a trip where you're trying to get somewhere, but you don't really enjoy the journey. You're not really present for the journey — the journey is kind of garbage time to get you to something that's meaningful.

The way that our objectified experience tends to work, is you never actually arrive, because even when you get to the object, you realize that it doesn't really solve this fundamental discomfort with yourself, and therefore you look for the next object.

You get home at the end of the day, and you still don't even feel at home. Now you're just thinking about tomorrow, and then you get to work and you're definitely not comfortable at work.

Or you travel and you take a nice shot to put up on Instagram but then you're like, "what's my next post going to be?" We're generally uncomfortable with when we're commuting, and the idea here is to bring that metaphor into our existential dilemma — that's actually how we feel quite a lot of the time.

BI: What's the other option?

EN: The other option is to develop tools to actually appreciate and be at home with the physical environments, our body, the identity that we have. and the emotions and thoughts that we have, — which is what I think Buddhist meditation is all about. It's like, how do you actually turn anywhere into home?

I think that's really the deeper existential and emotional resonance of what Buddhist meditation and Buddhist practice is for me. I don't think it's just about stress reduction or focusing, it's really about inhabiting the present moment completely and also being a benefit to others in that space.

BI: In my experience, meditation has been a process of getting more comfortable with how ridiculous and busy my mind feels. Does that make any sense to you?

EN: I think this is why meditation is so difficult to really take on as a path, and people think it's going to just make them instantly comfortable, and it never does, or if it does it's just for a few moments.

It's really this long middle part of the journey, which could take our whole lives — actually learning to feel more at home with discomfort. Learning to feel at home with this mind that's constantly in commute, that is constantly judging itself and judging others. Learning to feel at home with our emotions, which can cause a lot of upheaval and disruptions.

With meditation practice, you actually just get more in touch with the mentality of commute, and that's why we need so much compassion, you know, and so much kindness towards ourselves and others. A lot of the time, what we're really coming home to is our discomfort.

BI: For someone who's curious about meditation but has never tried any sort of contemplative exercise, what's the best way to start?

EN: You can start online, but these teachings really thrive when they're not just content. They thrive in relationship with fellow practitioners, mentors, and teachers, so I do think it's always better to find you know physical groups or physical teachers and classes if you can.

But a lot of us are in a place, either because of our schedule or because of our location, where we can't, so there's lots of online resources, podcasts, apps, downloads that I think would be helpful. But I think the best thing to do is definitely to find a class that's an introduction to meditation.

I want to say this in a way that doesn't sound like a rejection of anything else, but I think if you can find a place that has some grounding in a longer tradition, so it's not just like somebody decided to invent their own meditation tradition. This is why I love Buddhism, is that it's a full psychological and spiritual tradition that's evolved in different cultures over thousands of years — so there's some integrity and some depth there.

This casting call for a 'Mark Zuckerberg fan fiction' TV show is annoying San Franciscans

A casting call for a new TV show called "94110" has some San Franciscans scratching their heads.

According to an ad posted on Craigslist, "94110 imagines the story of six leading technology executives living, learning, and loving together in San Francisco's Mission District, 94110. Production is scheduled on location in San Francisco for summer 2015."

The casting call is for the six leading roles, in addition to supporting roles and extras.

A producer speaking to the Uptown Almanac described the show as "Mark Zuckerberg fan fiction" and said the independent company is currently looking for angel investors.

"The main collaborators are all residents of the Mission community," the producer said. "We want to take the neighborhood’s new reality and do something with it."

Online reaction has been somewhat negative.

Tender photos show the special bond between dogs and their owners

IDWT Crufts,Birmingham,England.2011.A owner andher Afhgan hound copy

Dogs have been man's best friend since the dawn of recorded history. It's hypothesized that early hunters used dogs for their keen sense of smell. Australian Aborigines huddled with them to gain warmth on cold nights. Dogs have been buried with humans as far back as 1,000 BC.

Every dog is different and every owner is different, and the bond between the two is unique to them.

Photographers Ollie Grove and Will Robson-Scott set out to document these distinctive bonds in their recent project, "In Dogs We Trust." They traveled the world photographing owners with their pooches, and they found a trove of characters.

Grove and Robson-Scott shared some images with us. You can see more and buy the book at their website.

Grove and Robson-Scott say their project grew out of "a mutual love of dogs, portraiture, and a new project that we felt had not been covered before."

"We have both always had family dogs. Both our dads are still dog owners," Grove tells Business Insider.

"There is not one type of dog owner or dog person and there is not one type of dog. Nothing is more inviting for a couple of photographers than a project that will constantly surprise and differ," he explains.

Here's how people in different countries use emoji

$

With the increase in the popularity of emoji around the world, smiley faces and sad faces are firmly entrenched within our social messaging lexicons. Mobile keyboard company SwiftKey aggregated more than 1 billion emoji sent by millions of its users all over the world from October 2014 to January 2015

They organized 800 emoji into 60 different categories, and were able to gather some pretty interesting facts. Analyzing emoji sent from 16 different languages and regions, they found out that happy faces were the most widely used emoji, followed by sad faces and hearts.

SwiftKey Emoji Report

There were some interesting regional takeaways, as well.

  • Arabic speakers use flower and plant emoji more than four times the average rate. They also use two-thirds more sun and heat-related emoji than any other language.
  • French speakers use four times the amount of heart emoji than other languages. The French are also the most positive in their use of emoji — 86% of the time.
  • Russian speakers use romantic emoji triple the amount as anyone else — 7% of all the emoji they use are romantic.
  • Australians use double the average number of alcohol related emoji.
  • Canadians use money-related emoji almost twice as much as the other languages.
  • When it comes to funny emoji (farts and poop), Malaysian speakers take the cake — they use twice as much as the average rate. On the flip side, Russia is the least "funny" when it comes to this type of emoji.
  • Americans use LGBT emoji (rainbows, people of the same gender holding hands) more than 30% more than the average.

Overall, all languages are generally positive in their use of emoji — the number comes to around 70% — while negative emoji are used far less, at around 15%.

A YouTube fitness star was blistered with negative comments about her looks and made this brilliant video response

cassey ho youtube

YouTube star Cassey Ho reaches millions of people everyday with her short, fun fitness videos.

But the 28-year-old creator of the YouTube workout channel Blogilates keeps receiving vicious comments about her weight and appearance. Despite the fact that she knew they were coming from negative places, she says the mean comments affect her much more than the positive words from fans.

“It’s something that’s been eating away at me for a while now,” she said in a video about body shaming and eating disorders last week. “The hatred and the mean comments that have been swirling around lately, I can’t shake it off.”

Ho even admitted some of the hateful words had made her cry and feel like a piece of meat.

So she decided to fight back by making a poignant video about how it felt for her to see what she would look like with the "perfect" body.

In the video, Ho has just gotten back from a work out. Pleased with herself, she takes a selfie, but is immediately inundated with rude comments about her weight and appearance.

happy YouTube star Cassey Ho Surrounded by voices telling her to change, Ho digitally shaves inches from her thighs and abs, increases her bra size, and even changes her eye color to please commenters.

changes YouTube star Cassey Ho

trimming YouTube star Cassey Ho After Ho has virtually edited herself, she takes another snap in the mirror — but she remains upset with how she looks, insinuating that changing yourself for other people will not make you happy.

still not happy YouTube star Cassey Ho She created the video with help from a body double, fellow YouTube star Arika Sato. She believes that after all of the days of shooting, visual effects, weeks of editing, and everything else it took to create the short film, it was worth it.

“I grew up being a little bit overweight and I fought to have the body and the life that I have today,” Ho told her followers in an earlier video about the negativity. “All of us come with a backstory, and that’s why I feel like you shouldn’t judge people because you never know where they’re coming from, slash you shouldn’t judge people by how they look.”

before and after unhappySo far, the video has been viewed by 1.2 million people, and many of her fans and commenters have praised Ho for sharing her body image struggle, calling her inspiring and telling her to ignore the haters.

But it hasn’t all been positive. To promote her video, Ho had shared an edited snapshot of a “perfect” body on her Instagram and was shocked to see many of the comments were either still extremely negative or else praising her for looking “amazing.”

A photo posted by Cassey Ho (@blogilates) on Apr 17, 2015 at 5:05pm PDT

I wanted to post again because there was a weird phenomenon that happened when I posted this Photoshopped picture,” Ho said on her Instagram. “On the very same photo, I got some people praising me and others degrading me. What worries me is this: 1. That some people think this is real and that it should be ‘goals.’ 2. That some people still think it's not good enough.”

“It's tough knowing what's real and what's not when magazine covers and music videos are Photoshopped (yes, music videos), Instagram pics are Photoshopped, and so many women are getting surgery,” she continued. “How are we to know what kind of beauty can be naturally achieved when everything around us is so deceiving?”

But of the nearly 6,000 comments on the YouTube video, the vast majority are people thanking the Blogilates creator for her honesty.

This is actually pretty amazing,” said one commenter. “There are lots of things I would change. But it took me years to know the changes I want to make are based on health, self respect, and self love. I don't want perfection. Nor do I want the societal standard of beauty. I just want to be healthy. I already love myself.”

A "perfect" 100-carat white diamond sold for $22 million at auction this week. It may be an incredibly rare (and pricey) stone, but it's not the biggest or most expensive diamond ever sold.

The most expensive diamond ever purchased at auction was a pink stone called the "Pink Star" that went for $82 million in 2013. The largest was a 118-carat oval.

LeonMarkovitz at dadaviz put together the graphic below, which shows the most impressive diamonds ever sold at auction by price and weight.

In the business world, it's all about who you know. So graduating from a business school with a well-connected network makes a huge difference.

Online grad school guide GraduatePrograms.com surveyed over 10,000 current and former business school students about their programs to find which places offer the strongest networks — schools where students have strong peer, faculty, and alumni networking connections and opportunities, even after graduating.

Students ranked their schools on a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being a perfect score. The scores for each school were averaged together and then ranked accordingly.

These business schools provide the best networks:

Maui, Hawaii, was ranked No. 1 thanks to attractions like its Haleakala Crater, where travelers can witness breathtaking views of the entire island. But several spots in Florida also made the list, including Key West and Key Largo.
