University Of Michigan Frats Allegedly Trashed 2 Ski Resorts

Three University of Michigan fraternities allegedly did tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage to two nearby ski resorts, according to local news reports.

The UMich chapter of Sigma Alpha Mu was allegedly responsible for a reported $50,000 worth of damage at Treetops Resorts, and two other, unnamed, fraternities caused thousands of dollars in damage to Boyne Highlands Resort, according to Northern Michigan news station 9 & 10 News.

"We had a group of a fraternity that was visiting and had an excessive party and did damage on the resort. Food, beer, alcohol, the walls, carpet damage, ceiling broken down and furniture damage," the Treetops general manager told 9 & 10 News. He also said that the students had to be led out of the hotel by police.

Michigan news website MLive reports similar damage to 12 different condominium units at Boyne Highlands. A hotel spokesperson told MLive that the weekend's damage was the worst the resort had seen in 50 years.

Check out some pictures of the reported destruction below:

Both ski resorts are in contact with UMich, which is also investigating the damages. The university sent the following statement to 9 & 10 News:

We are very disappointed in the behavior of some of our students during a weekend visit to two northern Michigan ski resorts. I want to assure you that the organizations and the individuals involved will be held accountable for their actions. While we are still gathering information, we understand that the damage at Treetops Resort and Boyne Highlands is expected to total in the thousands of dollars. U-M staff members in the Office of Greek Life have begun meeting with the presidents of the fraternities and sororities involved. We expect full payment for all damages. The local Greek chapters are in the process of notifying their national organizations, which could bring their own sanctions. We are confident the national organizations will take this seriously and will work through this situation in collaboration with the university. Additionally, these incidents will be addressed through the Greek Life student judiciary process on our campus.

We have reached out to the University of Michigan and Sigma Alpha Mu for comment, and will update with any additional statements.

Chinese Tourists Are Flooding Into The US Thanks To A New Visa Rule

chinese tourists wall street

In 2014, 72.2 million international visitors came to the US, according to US Travel Association, and that number is expected to hit 88.3 million in four years.

A huge portion of that growth will come from China, which is expected to send 3.1 million visitors to the States in 2019, a 172% increase over 2013 figures. That will put China behind only Mexico and Canada in terms of the number of visitors it sends, according to the US Department of Commerce.

This is good news for the US economy — last year, 1.8 million Chinese tourists visited America and spent a whopping $21.1 billion. That number could top $80 billion by 2021, writes Avery Booker at China Luxury Advisors.

The projected growth is thanks in part to the new extended US-China visa agreement signed at the APEC summit last November, which is encouraging an increase in Chinese business travelers and tourists to the US.

The new B-category non-immigrant visa can now be issued for up to 10 years for business or tourist travel for either US citizens going to China or Chinese travelers coming to America.

That’s significantly more than the length of time permitted by student visas, which only allow students and exchange visitors to have entry visas valid for up to five years or the length of the program.

The new visa also makes it cheaper to travel to the US since previously Chinese business travelers and tourists had to apply annually for visas which could cost as much as $160 to process. It also extends student and exchange visas from one to five years.

“I think America is a top destination for many different reasons,” Hansi Men, an investment immigration lawyer at Streit & Su law firm, told Business Insider. “Most people in China still think America is number one. Many Chinese parents also take their children to America to show them top schools like Yale and Harvard," he added.

Canada currently sends the most tourists to the US, followed by Mexico, the United Kingdom, and Japan. China ranks seventh (but is expected to rise four spots by 2019).

Intense Video Of 52 Skydivers Setting A World Record For Most People Falling In Formation

An amazing video has emerged of 52 skydivers setting a new world record for a 'Head Up' flight formation over Phoenix, AZ, US. The footage is shot by participant Zachary R Sabel using a helmet-mounted camera.

"Head Up body flight is the most difficult position to balance while being able to build formations" Zachary later wrote online. "In head up flying, we are balancing mass over lift, so you are battling aerodynamics the entire time.

"It's kind of like riding a wheelie on a bike, you always want to tip over, or never get the wheel off the ground."

Here's What Happens When You Say Something Ironic To An American

$

dubai international triathalon bike race bicycleBoth Americans and British fall toward the low-context end of the Communicating scale (i.e., they speak more explicitly than most cultures), but the British speak more between the lines than Americans do, a tendency particularly apparent with British high-context humor.

Many British people are fond of delivering ironic or sarcastic jokes with a completely deadpan face. Unfortunately, this kind of humor is lost on many Americans; they may suspect the British person is joking but they don’t dare laugh, just in case he is not.

As a result, the British often say that Americans “don’t understand irony.”

A more precise explanation, however, is that Americans are simply more low-context than the British. So when Americans make a joke, especially in a professional setting, they are likely to indicate clearly through explicit verbal or physical cues, “This is a joke” — something totally unnecessary when one British person speaking to another (in their higher-context culture, if you have to tell us it was a joke, then it wasn’t worth the breath you used to tell it).

Alastair Murray, a British manager living in Dubai, offers this example:

I was participating in a long-distance bike race across the UAE desert with hundreds of participants. In order to be collegial, I took a turn riding in front of another biker in order to break the headwind for him and help him save a little energy. A stranger had recently done the same for me.

A little later the biker peddled up next to me and said in a thick American accent, “Thanks very much for your help!”

I replied, “Oh, sure! But I wouldn’t have done it if I’d known you were American.”

To someone British it would have been clear that this was a joke, and even a sort of gentle reaching-out of friendliness. But as I delivered it straight-faced and with a serious voice, the American didn’t seem to get it. He rode next to me in silence, beginning to pull slightly to the side.

So then I thought about how often Americans say “just kidding” after a joke. So I gave it a go. I told him, “Oh, hey, just kidding!”

And he responded, “Oh! All right! Ha ha! That was a good one. Where are you from?”

Oh, gosh, I thought. . . . these literal Americans!

Bill Gates Talks About The Heartbreaking Moment That Turned Him To Philanthropy

Bill Gates

About a year ago, Bill Gates ruffled some feathers when he dissed an effort to bring the internet to the developing world.

Now we know why he feels that way.

He said at the time, "Hmm, which is more important, connectivity or malaria vaccine? If you think connectivity is the key thing, that’s great. I don’t."

It turns out, he didn't always think like that. In fact, his aha moment came when he, too, was trying to bring computers to impoverished areas of Africa.

Gates realized how ridiculous that idea was when he saw living conditions there firsthand in 1997.

In an interview with Charlie Rose, Gates told the story:

"Well, the idea that a computer was relevant to the problems they were dealing with, where getting enough food, having decent health, getting any electricity, a reasonable place to live, it was pretty clear to me that, hey, I love this computer, and I thought it was neat and kids should have access, but they had to rig up a special generator so I could do this one demo. And they borrowed this generator. It wasn't going to be there when I left. So the idea that there was a hierarchy of needs," he explained. "While still believing in digital empowerment, that was not at the top of the list. That was pretty eye-opening for me."

But the true moment that caused him to try and solve poverty was even more heartbreaking.

Melinda Gates, Bill's wife, told that story to Rose. Gates had visited a hospital treating people for tuberculosis during his visit to Africa. He called Melinda, she recalls.

"We often call each other when we are the road. Almost every day. But it was a different call. Bill was really quite choked up on the phone... Because he’d seen firsthand in a TB clinic hospital how awful it is to have that disease," she told Rose. "He literally said to me, "It’s a death sentence. To go into that hospital is a death sentence."

So he decided not just to donate money to that one hospital, but to do things that could help "thousands and millions" get out of poverty altogether, Melinda says.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has been going strong now for 15 years.

The entire interview will air PBS on Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2015 and on Bloomberg TV on Thursday Jan. 22.

Why Everyone Should Be Wearing Wool Socks This Winter

$
0
0

wool socks

If you haven't experienced the magic of wearing wool socks in the wintertime, now is the time to change that.

In cold, wet weather, cotton athletic socks just won't cut it. When it gets wet, cotton loses all insulating properties, so you may as well not be wearing anything on your feet at all.

And it doesn't matter how warm your winter boots are. If you're wearing cotton socks, your feet will perspire, and you will end up with cold, damp feet.

The solution is to invest in some quality wool socks. Wool, especially super-soft merino wool, offers several unique advantages over cotton that make it the fabric of choice for winter wear.

These include:

  • Unlike cotton, wool is an excellent insulator. When it's cold out your feet will be toasty and warm in your wool socks.

  • Wool can absorb a significant amount of moisture — much more than cotton. Wool can actually hold a third of its weight in moisture before it even starts to feel "wet."

  • Wool keeps its insulating properties even while wet, which is perfect for sweaty feet.

  • Not only that, but wool also dries much more quickly than cotton or other synthetics.

  • Wool fibers are naturally anti-bacterial and, therefore, odor resistant....

  • ...which means they don't have to be washed every time you wear them. Indeed, they can be worn multiple times before washing.

However, the world of wool is not all unicorns, rainbows, and warm, toasty feet. There are some downsides to wool.

They're not super convenient to wear all the time. Most manufacturers advise against machine washing their socks, so hand washing and laying flat to dry is most often recommended. This is tiresome and annoying, even if you don't have to do it every single time the socks are worn. (Some companies use wool blends that enable the socks to take the beating of the machine, however. Check the label before purchase.)

It's also inadvisable to wear wool socks for prolonged periods while walking on a carpet since the fiber friction isn't good for the socks' longevity.

Also, if you buy low-grade non-merino wool socks, be prepared for some itchiness. Merino wool doesn't itch at all, but lower grade quality wool definitely does. No one likes itchy feet.

As for brands, both SmartWool and Wigwam make excellent socks. Every year Wigwam also makes a sock for Costco released under the Kirkland Signature brand that are highly regarded — I personally swear by them. Look out for them next fall, because they're long sold out this year.

This $3,000 Standing Desk Created By An Ex-Apple Engineer Is The Best 'Smart' Desk Money Can Buy

$
0
0

With sitting all day being considered the new smoking, standing desks are more popular than ever.

If you're looking for the best standing desk money can buy, look no further than Stir's new $2,990 Kinetic Desk M1. It can be raised and lowered with a tap of your fingers.

The desk's design is top notch, and the integrated display on the desk's surface makes it a "smart" desk that learns from your sitting and standing habits.

Stir M1 Desk

Stir M1 Desk

The M1 is the second smart desk from ex-Apple engineer JP Labrosse, who was part of the original iPod team. The desk's design pedigree clearly shows; everything about the M1 seems logical and thought out: the physical design of the desk is sleek and sturdy, and the 5-inch embedded LCD touchscreen is surprisingly useful and doesn't get in the way of your work.

Stir Kinetic Desk M1

Underneath the touchscreen are the desk's brains. A tiny processor (which can be removed and upgraded in the future) keeps track of your preferences, height settings, and habits. For offices with shared desks, you can sign in using the screen or by Bluetooth with a Fitbit, but the desk automatically detects when you approach and turns on the display.

All of the desk's controls are handled by the touchscreen. You can manually change from seated to standing position, check the time, see how long you've been standing or sitting, set a daily standing goal, or check out a history of your standing and sitting habits.

Stir desk m1

This brings us to the coolest feature of the M1: How it notifies you to change positions.

Using a feature Stir is calling Whisperbreath, the desk will notify you with a gentle 1-inch rise and fall of the desk. The reminder is easy enough to ignore if you're in the zone, and the M1 will learn if there are certain times of the day where you want to keep sitting and standing.

Here's what it looks like in action. After the notification, a double tap on the screen gives the desk the go-ahead to change positions.

After trying the M1 out for myself, I can certainly say that the Stir team understands how busy people are, and the group made a smart choice in avoiding an audio or visual-based notification. People have enough beeps and buzzes in their lives, and I found the Whisperbreath feature unobtrusive and useful.

If you decide to change positions after a Whisperbreath notification, you just tap the touchscreen twice and the desk will gradually raise or lower. If you ignore it, nothing happens and you're free to continue working how you were. Of course, you can set a custom height for when you're standing and sitting, and the desk's motorized internals make the transition quiet and shake-free.

The M1 needs to be assembled after it's delivered, but you really only have to attach the desk's surface to the motorized legs, and there's literally only eight bolts to the process (Stir says you'll need two people, though, for lifting it into place).

So should you buy one? The biggest barrier is certainly the $2,990 pricetag: It's more than $1,000 cheaper than Stir's first desk, the more angular F1, but most people still won't be able to afford it. Unfortunately, the M1 is currently on the fence between being a consumer product and bulk-order office product that buyers will purchase in sets of 100 or 1,000.

But from a consumer standpoint, buying the M1 is like purchasing a competitively priced sports car. Sure, there are cheaper options, but you're paying for the high level of design, quality, and longevity, and the M1 delivers in all those areas.

A Stanford Grad Got $2.1 Million To Make A More Elite Tinder — Here's What It Takes To Join

$

amanda bradford the league

Amanda Bradford doesn't think her dating app, The League, is elitist. She prefers the word "curated," the same way Ivy League schools and top employers select only the best candidates.

The League, which just raised a $2.1 million seed round, is operating with 4,500 beta users in San Francisco. The goal is to make a more selective Tinder that's only for the most interesting and motivated single people in cities around the world.

Ultimately, Bradford wants to match tons of power couples. Since November, the app has paired 20,000 people, resulting in 19 couples.

Right now, the app skews slightly female, and its users often have advanced degrees. They tend to be in their late 20s; all have been carefully selected by Bradford's team using an are-you-cool-enough algorithm her tech team built.

the league

Those accepted into The League get one "ticket" they can give to another single friend, and about 50% of The League's users were referred by another member. All other singles have to wait in a virtual line and hope they're top-notch enough to join The League's elite pool of prospects. Lawyers, doctors, and tech executives frequent the app. Many of the beta users have never signed up for a dating service before. Or if they were on Tinder, they weren't pleased with the experience.

"We want people to think of The League as a little more grown up and tasteful, for young professionals who want to go out for a coffee or a drink and aren't just about hooking up," Bradford says. To get only the most serious singles, Bradford feels it's important to be highly selective rather than target hard-partying college students.

"The best universities curate students. Employers curate their employees. Work and school are the top places where 20-somethings meet each other. So it makes sense for a dating community" to curate as well, Bradford says.

Unlike Hinge and Tinder, The League relies more on LinkedIn than Facebook to determine who is up to snuff. Bradford says she and her friends frequently LinkedIn-stalk dates before meeting them for coffee to make sure they aren't scary and that their goals align.

The acceptance algorithm that The League uses scans the social networks to ensure applicants are in the right age group and that they are career-oriented. That doesn't mean they have to be Ivy graduates or work for a big-name firm. But they should have accomplished something in their 20s.

the league

"It's not an 'If this, then yes, or, if no, then no' algorithm," Bradford says, insisting that membership isn't based on salaries. "We want our users to say, 'Hey, we trust your judgment.' These people are going after their dreams. They're just interesting, ambitious, and doing something they're excited about."

The League also looks at users' social graphs to see who they know who is already a member of The League.

Once accepted, users are shown only a handful of matches per day. They can log back in during "happy hour" at 5 p.m. for a new batch of matches to scan. The League makes sure users aren't shown first connections or current coworkers, to minimize awkward virtual encounters.

Bradford, who worked at Salesforce, attended Stanford Graduate school and interned with the top venture capital firm Sequoia Capital, was hoping to raise $750,000. But she found numerous angel investors — including five of her professors at Stanford — eager to invest. IDG Ventures gave her the first check in June followed by Sherpa Ventures and others. She has a computer science background and was offered a product management role at Facebook, but she opted to launch a startup instead.

Bradford is using her millions to grow her team of four and to hire engineers. The League will most likely launch in New York City next, where Bradford says there is already a sizable wait list. She is also eager to launch in London, where motivated individuals tend to flock. She would rather tackle the world's most interesting cities than smaller US towns.

Shirin Oskooi, senior director of product management at Yahoo, will make her reality TV debut on February 25 as part of the cast of the 30th season of "Survivor."

Oskooi is a longtime "Survivor" fan and has tried out for the show more than 10 years in a row.

She describes herself as "competitive, clever, and quirky," and lists "traveling, exotic food, whistling champion, and mind games" as her hobbies.

Prior to Yahoo, Oskooi was a product manager at Google, where she led the design, launch, and growth of Google Calendar.

In a special twist for this season, contestants will be split into three tribes based on their occupations. Oskooi will be a part of the White Collar Masaya Tribe, made up of other business-oriented people.

There's also a Blue Collar Escameca Tribe, which includes a postal worker and hairdresser, as well as a No Collar Nagote Tribe, made up of "free-spirits who refuse to make or abide by rules."

The 18 castaways will be competing to survive on a beach in Nicaragua.

survivor castIn her CBS bio, Oskooi explains why she'll be the last castaway standing: "I practice 'voting people out' in real life and succeed. I’m a fighter and risk-taker. I’m super smart, observant, and don’t let my emotions govern my actions at work, let alone in games. I have no qualms with using people or their secrets to get ahead."

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer tweeted her congratulations to Oskooi.

The 7 Worst Mistakes People Make In Their 30s

young couple walking

Your 30s are typically a time for settling down after using your 20s to take risks and find yourself.

Many 30-somethings are busy raising a family and rising through the hierarchy at work.

Those who have already been through that decade say that as their responsibilities accumulated, it became easier to neglect relationships and ignore opportunities that they would never get again.

Quora users discussed lessons they learned in the thread: "What is the biggest mistake you made in your 30s and what did you learn from it?"

We've collected some of the best responses:

They abandon their loftier aspirations.

Twenty-somethings are often willing to settle for a job they are not passionate about, but before they know it, that job turns into their career. An anonymous poster writes that his or her biggest mistake of his or her 30s was to become "addicted to a monthly salary," in the sense that he or she settled for job security over career satisfaction.

If you've ever wanted to start a business or pursue a side project, it will only get more difficult as your responsibilities increase.

They put their career ahead of family and friends.

"Don't just work. Make memories. The older you get, the harder it is to make meaningful relationships. Foster those while you're young," writes Microsoft product designer Michael Dorian Bach, who is now in his late 30s.

They neglect their health.

Bach writes that the pursuit of a career can also be a drain on one's health. "Be healthy. That is priority 1. Don't get into your 30s being slow and tired all the time. It sucks," he says. Develop an exercise routine, and enjoy your mobility while you're still young.

They miss the chance to have kids.

CEO coach Alison Whitmire shares a personal story about how she took getting pregnant for granted in her 30s and chose to pursue a new career opportunity instead of trying to have a child. Years later, after a failed pregnancy and then a failed marriage, she remarried and had a baby at 43. She realizes now that no one is ever adequately prepared to have a child, and if you want one, it's best to do so before it's too late.

They don't spend enough time with their aging parents.

Entrepreneur and blogger James Altucher, who is now 46, writes about a particularly difficult memory for him: "When I was 34 I hung up the phone on my dad in an argument and never returned his calls. Six months later he had a stroke and died. A week before that he had emailed me to say hello but I didn't return the email. I'm sorry, Dad."

It can be easy to forget that your parents grow older as you do. Don't take them for granted.

They don't set up a financial foundation for the future.

Altucher writes about the many times in his 30s he bet practically all of his money on a business venture and then lost all of it. Altucher is doing well now, but he looks back on his failures as the result of recklessness.

As your responsibilities grow, it can seem like what you put into savings won't amount to much come retirement, but it will only become harder to start saving in your 40s.

They stop having fun.

Just because you're not in your 20s anymore doesn't mean you need to give up enjoying life. Bach says he spent the early half of his adult life chasing money, and it only made him unhappy and more cynical about life.

Go on dates with your significant other. Take your kids on trips. Go to concerts with your best friends. Just don't forget that the money you work to make is useless if you're miserable.
