It Was Incredibly Complicated To Photograph Africa's First Underwater Hotel Room

Underwater Hotel Behind Scenes 11

Travel photographer Jesper Anhede originally went to Pemba Island off the coast of Tanzania to start a surf school with a friend at The Manta Resort.

But he ended up with an even bigger challenge: photographing the resort's underwater hotel room — the first of its kind in Africa — anchored over 13 feet deep in the Indian Ocean.

The shoot took the veteran photographer two weeks to finish.

"You have to take the photos at exactly the best time, considering water clarity, angle of the sun, strength of the sun, when are there the most fish around, currents, tides, wind, and waves." Anhede wrote in an email to Business Insider.

He has a CMAS scuba diving certification, and during the shoot was largely focused on the light and color distortions that happen underwater, which he said were both a blessing and a curse. The turquoise water made the room look spectacular, but choosing the right indoor lighting and sheets were difficult since colors appear distorted 13 feet below the surface.

Despite these challenges and even in the middle of the island's rainy season, Anhede still made some fantastic shots of the three-tiered underwater suite.

"Sleeping in the room is a fantastic experience," Anhede wrote. "But sleeping on the sky deck of the room under the clearly visible Milky Way is almost even more fantastic. Two other things that really stuck out were swimming around the underwater room during the night, when there is phosphorus that lights everything up, and taking a dive first thing in the morning and hearing the dolphins chatter."

At $900 a night as a single or $1,500 a night as a couple, it sounds like a worthwhile experience.

Before setting out to Pemba Island, the crew visited a small village in Tanzania on the eastern coast of Africa, which consisted of only a few huts.

Anhede practiced his aerial shots with a remote-controlled flying camera he rigged in a Tanzanian jungle before shooting the underwater hotel room.

Pemba Island, home to The Manta Resort's underwater hotel room, is most easily reached by plane from Tanzania. Anhede said the flight was a "very bumpy ride."

Tesla's Model S Takes On The New Corvette Stingray In The Ultimate Drag Race

The Tesla Model S and Chevrolet Corvette Stingray are two of the best cars to hit the market over the past year, each awesome in distinct ways.

The Model S is the first 100% badass 100% electric car. The Stingray is the triumphant new incarnation of the ultimate American muscle car. The Model S is the luxury family sedan than can seat seven. The Corvette is the tw0-seater where only the driver matters. The Model S is silent and the Corvette roars.

Tesla promises a 0 to 60 mph time of 4.2 seconds — stupendous for a car that weighs more than 4,600 pounds. The gas-powered Corvette doesn't have the thrilling torque of the Tesla, though 460 horsepower can send it up to 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds. But specs don't always decide who's faster.

So we want to see them race.

The two cars lined up in this video are the best of each model: the most powerful P85 Tesla against the C7 with the Z51 performance package.

Watch, and enjoy:

Storms create powerful waves. We're just thankful not to have been in the way of these giant walls of water, unlike some of the people in the pictures below.

Giant waves crash over onlookers washing them off the sea wall of Cape Town's Kalk Bay harbour, August 27, 2005. The two men were later rescued as storms created waves of an estimated 30 feet.

People Are Turning To Websites To Find Strangers Who Will Raise Children With Them

CoParents

Baby Indigo Blue is a little over 1 year old, and looks like any other happy baby. Her parents, Dawn Pieke and Fabian Blue, dote on their daughter like parents do.

For her first birthday, there were "Dora The Explorer" balloons.

But Indigo's family is unconventional. Her parents met on the Internet, but it wasn't on a dating site.

Instead, the two met on an online community for strangers looking for people to co-parent children with — no romance necessary.

These websites (like Modamily and CoParents) use a compatibility test that lets people seek out shared parenting values. The logistics of conceiving and raising the child are then left in the hands of the parents.

CBS had the story last night.

“We hit it off instantaneously,” Blue said of his relationship with Dawn. Blue, an out gay man, was determined to be a parent, whereas Dawn had just broken up with her live-in boyfriend when she found out he had cheated on her.

The two got to know each other for months, before Blue moved from Australia to be with Pieke in Nebraska and decided to have a baby using artificial insemination.

The duo was profiled on Buzzfeed while Dawn was pregnant, and now CBS caught up with the parents as their baby turned 1.

Psychologist To The Rich Says His Clients Are Feeling Really Persecuted Right Now

Downton Abbey Dowager Countess

Politico's Ben White has a story this morning on the growing fear and alienation felt by America's richest citizens.

Between the election of progressive New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, the vilification of Tom Perkins after he said criticism of the 1% was similar to Nazi persecution of Jews, and a mounting sentiment to finally correct income inequality, some rich people are all strung out.

And telling their shrinks about it. From Politico:

People who counsel the wealthy for a living say there is both an unease with growing income disparity and a fear of even greater persecution.

“I think that with Occupy Wall Street there was a sense of the heat getting turned up and a feeling of vilification and potential danger,” said Jamie Traeger-Muney, a psychologist whose Wealth Legacy Group focuses on counseling the affluent. “There is a worry among our clients that they are being judged and people are making assumptions about who they are based on their wealth.”

White goes on to describe the "collective freakout" coming from the 1%.

11 Seattle- And Denver-Themed Snack Foods For Your Super Bowl Party

$

0

Fans watching Super Bowl XLVIII from home don't have to abide by the NFL's strict tailgating rules, but many still end up with the basic pizza and wings at their game day parties.

In honor of the first outdoor, cold weather match-up in Super Bowl history, it's the perfect time to shake up your viewing party menu as well.

We compiled a list of regional favorites from Seattle and Denver to get you psyched to watch the Seahawks take on the Broncos, and threw in the recipes that are easy to make at home. Check out what you should be serving at your Super Bowl party:

Pancetta salmon kebabsSalmon Kebab

Salmon is a staple in Seattle, and also happens to be one of the best natural sources of omega 3, which is good for heart health.

Wrap salmon chunks in pancetta, a thin Italian bacon, and char them over the grill for 15 minutes for an easy-to-handle northwestern snack. Just remember to soak the wooden kebabs in water for at least an hour before cooking to keep them from burning. Then finish the dish with olive oil, vinegar and parsley.

Colorado whiskey chili

Firmly rooted in the wild west tradition, Colorado chili is spicy and hearty and preferences beef over pork. Throw together beef, red and black beans, tomatoes and a dose of Denver's iconic Stranahan's Colorado Whiskey for a winning combination.

Your buddies will love a warm, spiked chili on a cold game day. Plus, it's easy to make; just throw everything in the crock pot and let it simmer until you're ready to eat.

World's best mac 'n' cheeseBeechers Handmade Cheese

Beecher's Handmade Cheese in Seattle has been recognized across the country for their "World's Best" mac 'n' cheese. They use a combination of semi-hard cow's milk cheese and Jack cheese over Penne pasta finished with baked-on panko bread crumbs.

If you're feeling lazy (and you're in the New York/New Jersey area), you can also pick up a pre-made batch from Beecher's Handmade Cheese at their Flatiron outpost.

Rainier cherry crumble

Rainiers are very sweet cherries that are famous in Washington. You can make a quick and easy dessert by plopping them in a pan with flour, brown sugar, almonds, cinnamon and butter. Cook it at 400 degrees for 35 minutes.

Or, if you don't feel like doing any baking on game day, just have a hearty supply of Rainier cherries ready to pop in your mouth or cocktail for a sweet burst.

Deep fried rocky mountain oystersRocky Mountain Oysters

Nothing matches the machismo of the Super Bowl quite like bull testicles. Rocky mountain oysters are a delicacy from western ranchers, who castrate spring calves. If you deep fry them, they're a handy snack that tastes similar to a clam strip.

Just coat the meat in vinegar, red wine, flour and cornmeal before frying it in hot oil for a few minutes until it's golden brown. Most recipes allow for calf, lamb, sheep, or turkey testicles to substitute for a bull's, which may not be available in your region.

Spicy cheddar cheese football

This food ball will take you about 20 minutes to make. Whip together cream cheese, sharp cheddar, Romano, sour cream, hot sauce and Worcestershire in a bowl (basically all that extra stuff you've got stored in your cupboards anyway).

Take the cheese mixture out of the bowl and cover it with plastic wrap, so you can mold it into the shape of a football. Sprinkle nuts of your choice on top and draw the football laces with Sriracha. It's the perfect cheese dip for anything you've got lying around.

Loaded nachosLoaded nachos

This is another easy recipe that largely calls for throwing a bunch of stuff together in a bowl. The only constant for this menu item is tortilla chips. Other than that, you can pile on any toppings you like.

If you're feeling the love for both Denver and Seattle, you can incorporate some hearty western beef along with clams, oysters, salsa and guac.

Dungeness crab dip

Dungeness crab yields particularly sweet meat from the Olympic Peninsula in Washington. It's a great way to punch up a standard crab dip with cream cheese, leeks, mayo and garlic powder.

Elk burgersElk burger

You can please fans for both Super Bowl teams this year with elk burgers. The Rocky Mountains in Colorado are elk country, but Roosevelt elk are also the state mammal of Washington.

Plus, you can add a new dimension to your game day menu by replacing the standard beef patty with the leaner tasting elk.

Tree line cocktail

In 2011, the Colorado Distillers Guild and the Colorado Bartenders Guild hosted a competition to create a signature state cocktail. The Tree Line, by mixologists at Denver's Avenue Grill, came out the winner.

It's made with two Bing cherries, 2 oz. Leopold's Small Batch Whiskey, 0.5 oz Leopold's Three Pins Alpine Herbal Liqueur, 0.5 oz fresh squeezed lemon juice, and 0.5 oz simple syrup.

Washington apple cocktailWashington apple cocktail

Washington apples are known the world over, so why not have a drinkable version? The Washington apple cocktail can be served as a Martini, a shooter, in a tall glass or short on the rocks.

It's made with equal parts Crown Royal Canadian Whiskey, sour apple schnapps, cranberry juice and an apple slice.

A Cheap And Easy Way To Separate An Egg Yolk

Why New York Should Host Every Super Bowl

$

times square subway

Unlike the locals in the majority of host cities, normal people living in New York haven't been inconvenienced at all by the Super Bowl.

The city is big enough, with enough preexisting travel and entertainment infrastructure, that the typical New Yorker could go about their business during Super Bowl week without the slightest inkling that a massive sporting event is taking place.

There are no major traffic issues because everyone uses public transit, and the influx of riders is relatively small. The only traffic issue will be on Super Bowl Sunday around the stadium.

There are no hotel issues because there are more rooms than Super Bowl visitors.

There are no two-hour waits at restaurants because there are approximately 10 million places to eat.

The weather is going to be fine. And even if it snowed, it'd make the game infinitely better.

The garish branded hellscape that is "Super Bowl Boulevard" is placed on top of the preexisting garish branded hellscape that is Times Square — a place locals habitually avoid already.

New York City has swallowed the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl is thing that happens to be in town, not a thing that has taken over the town.

Some people think that's a bad thing, which is crazy.

I went to the Super Bowl in Indianapolis two years ago. There, Super Bowl week crippled the city. Downtown was literally taken over by the Super Bowl — the streets were closed and renamed after football stuff, the facades of buildings were plastered over with Super Bowl-themed wraps, and massive white tents obscured any sense of place.

The main part of the city was transformed into a cultureless NFL amusement park devoted solely to branded experiences. You had to travel out of the center of town to get even the smallest grasp of what the city was all about. In addition, the traffic was awful and there wasn't a hotel room to be found in a 100-mile radius.

It was a massive disruption that affected everyone in town, regardless of what was happening in their lives and whether or not they cared about the NFL.

The NFL loves that. It reinforces the notion that they are always the biggest, most important thing in town. But it comes at the cost of a massive civic annoyance for whatever city is coerced into hosting it.

The NFL is doing small cities across the country a favor by putting a Super Bowl in a city that can actually handle it.

It's not a bad thing that no one in New York cares about the Super Bowl — it's a sign of just how little the Super Bowl has messed up their lives.

Olive Garden

Olive Garden is trying to drive sales by offering to pick up parents' babysitting tab.

The struggling restaurant chain has teamed up with My Gym, a network of children's fitness centers, to provide parents with a free "date night" offer on Feb. 7.

Parents can drop off their kids before dinner at one of 145 participating My Gym locations around the country to participate. But first, they will have to call and reserve a spot, which requires a deposit.

The deposit will only be refunded if parents show an Olive Garden receipt when they return to pick up their kids.

Space is limited to 30 kids per location, and reservations are made on a first-come, first-serve basis, according to Olive Garden. The Orlando Sentinel first reported on the babysitting offer.

Olive Garden, which is owned by Darden Restaurants, has been trying to revive declining sales by lowering prices, offering a new selection of small plates, and adding a burger to its menu to compete with chains like Chillis..

Same-restaurant sales fell 0.6% in the most recent quarter and company executives said in September that visits had declined 4% from a year earlier.

The US Cities With The Best Public Transportation Systems

$

Grand Central Station

A convenient public transportation system is often a big part of what motivates people to move into particular neighborhoods and cities.

And according to Walk Score, living near public transportation could have more benefits than you think. Homes within walking distance of transit systems tend to outperform others in the region, while commuters save money when they don't have to pay to own and maintain a car.

Research has even shown that living near good public transit could make you happier

In their most recent ranking of the country's public transportation systems, Walk Score took data from 316 U.S. cities and thousands of neighborhoods and assigned a "Transit Score" to each.

The Transit Scores consider frequency, type of route, and distance between stops, but system efficiency is notably missing. Scores were scaled out of a possible 100 points.

Overall, Transit Scores for cities outside of the top five were surprisingly low, which raises questions about the state of the country's mass transportation in general. Older cities in the Northeast with established systems tended to score higher, though some West Coast cities investing in their transit also did relatively well in the rankings.

10. Portland (Transit Score: 49.6)

Portland ranked in the top 10 due to its bus and light rail systems, but it's best known for being a haven for walkers and cyclists.

9. Los Angeles (Transit Score: 49.9)

Given Los Angeles' notorious traffic, it's pretty surprising to see this city coming in at the number 9 slot. However, the City of Angels has a huge bus ridership, and billions of dollars are being funneled into expanding the light-rail network.

charm city circulator8. Baltimore (Transit Score: 56.9)

With 105 bus routes (including the new, green Charm City Circulator), plus light rail and ferry options, Baltimore is fairly easy to get around.

7. Seattle (Transit Score: 57.3)

Extensive plans to expand the Sound Transit light rail line over the next couple of years means that Seattle's public transportation system will continue to improve.

6. Chicago (Transit Score: 65.3)

Chicago's neighborhoods are connected by the "L" and Metra Rail systems. The Windy City is also friendly to walkers, earning a respectable walkability score of 75

5. Philadelphia (Transit Score: 67)

SEPTA operates a variety of different services, including buses, light rail, trolleys, and two subway lines, and the city is very walkable.

DC metro train station4. Washington, D.C. (Transit Score: 70.4)

The Metrorail is one of the busiest rapid transit rail systems in the country. The city is also in the midst of a 6-year rebuilding program that aims to improve the public transportation experience with new lighting, signs, and cars.

3. Boston (Transit Score: 74.8)

Boston's Green Line is home to the oldest subway tunnel in the country. Today's rail and bus lines are very convenient for commuters, plus it's rated the third most walkable city in the U.S.

2. San Francisco (Transit Score: 80.5)

BART and MUNI will get you around the city, while CalTrain makes for an easy and pleasant commute from Silicon Valley.

1. New York City (Transit Score: 81.2)

It should be no surprise that the Big Apple comes in first on this list. Whether it's by subway, bus, or Citi Bike, you're never more than a 10- or 15-minute walk from some form of public transportation in New York.

High-end coffee retailer Blue Bottle Coffee made headlines earlier this week when it was reported the company had received $25 million from several big-name tech investors and Morgan Stanley Investment Management.

The company, which operates 11 locations in New York City and California's Bay Area, has become hugely popular with hipsters and techies from coast to coast. Vintage brewing machines and artisanal coffee are some of its major selling points, and lines are known to get long.

We paid a visit to the spacious Blue Bottle cafe in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, to see what the hype is all about.

We visited Blue Bottle's Brooklyn shop, located on a pretty nondescript street in Williamsburg.

We got our first glance of their famous Blue Bottle logo right at the entrance.

And another one where the shop's hours are posted. The logo on a to-go cup part is of the company's cachet and a sure sign the drinker is "in the know" about what's cool in the world of coffee.

How One Of NYC's Hottest Nightlife Groups Is Blowing Out The Super Bowl

$

Marquee

New Yorkers have come to expect a complete and total over-the-top show from Strategic Group — the nightlife group that owns the Dream Hotel, Marquee, Avenue, and LAVO.

Super Bowl 2014 will be no different.

How could it be? It's on Strategic's turf.

Every one of their properties has a lineup of celebrity-hosted or DJ'd parties, culminating in a Super Bowl Party/Brunch blow-out at LAVO featuring live cheerleaders, DJing during commercials, and its own special Halftime Show.

The details of the Show, of course, are a secret. Others details are out there, though. Strategic Group's Andrew Goldberg says Marquee, which will host DJs Beats By Dre and Tiesto on Friday and Saturday respectively, will debut new theatrical lighting on Friday.

Think: LED lights everywhere — above your head, as well as on gloves, and on hats passed out to partiers when they enter the club.

On Friday, Afro Jack will be at Avenue (where Captain Wes Welker and other Broncos have already been spotted partying down), and on Saturday PH-D, the club on The Dream Hotel's roof, will host an epic Sunset Saturday Pre-Game Showdown.

Of course, it all comes at a price (without tax and tip). A table at the LAVO Super Bowl viewing party starts at $5,000. A table at the Sunset Saturday at PH-D? Tables starts at $3,000. And for Tiesto you better at least have $8,000 to throw down if you want table (with bottles of vodka and champagne on ice, of course, that goes for every spot without saying).

Goldberg says that he and his team have been planning these festivities for months. Super Bowl parties require a different touch than most others. The festivities are driven by sports fans that want a different experience than your run-of-the-mill party-goers.

"If you can have people like Joe Montana in your building you'll do better than having someone like Johnny Depp," says Goldberg.

Luckily, Strategic knows how to deliver that.

Usually, for Strategic, the Super Bowl is more like this: Goldberg and his team parachute into a smaller city — like Detroit or Denver, for example — bringing their natural New York talent for (tasteful) excess with them. There, they blow it out for corporate sponsors like Maxim who've rented out massive spaces like theaters and old opera houses for their Super Bowl party.

That's what Strategic did in 2006, Goldberg's favorite of parties past, when he and his team threw an epic blowout in Detroit that had celebrities of all stripes dancing in an old opera house's sky boxes all night long.

"Everyone that goes out, went out," says Goldberg. "It's more of a guys guy event so you see athletes like Lawrence Taylor, and you shake his hand and you feel proud."

Let the games begin.

Below, check out the full lineup of Strategic events.

THURSDAY: Afrojack at LAVO

FRIDAY: DJ Vice at LAVO, Beats by Dre at Marquee, Swizz Beatz at Avenue

SATURDAY: Tiesto at Marquee, Nick Cannon at LAVO, Sunset Saturday Pre-Game Showdown at PH-D at Dream Downtown

beyonce and jay z house of the day The New York Post reports today that Jay-Z and Beyoncé are looking to buy a Hamptons home, and recently checked out a luxurious property in East Hampton.

The home, on Further Lane, is listed through the luxury real estate firm Corcoran Group. Though the price has not been disclosed, insiders told Page Six that the home owners are asking for "around $25 million."

The 6,500-square-foot mansion has four bedrooms and over two acres of property, complete with an apple orchard, stone pathways, heated pools, and a tennis court.

There's also plenty of indoor space with dark wood floors, vaulted ceilings, and gorgeous furniture which would be included in the sale.

Last year, Jay and Bey spent a reported $400,000 to spend one month in Joe Farrell's Sandcastle home in Bridgehampton, with a bowling alley, movie theater, and spa. Looks like this year they could be ready to buy their own Hamptons hideaway.

Whether or not they buy the home, it's worth a peek inside.

Welcome to 466 Further Lane in East Hampton, the home Jay and Bey were reportedly looking to buy.

NYC rat map by zip code

Like many big cities, New York has a rat problem.

It's gotten so bad that the city started a "Rat Indexing" program in 2008 where city officials inspect properties, look for active rat signs and problem conditions that attract rats, and track complaints about rats in parks, public housing, and schools.

The NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) has uploaded this info into a helpful Rat Information Portal (RIP) that shows anxious New Yorkers how their block has fared in rat violations since 2010.

New Yorkers can search by borough, address, block number, and zip code to pull up all inspection results and rat violations, as well as view the individual data on how many rat inspections have failed in your area.

We compiled the data from the most recent 2012 numbers, and found the 10 zip codes that have the worst rat infestations by the percent of initial inspections that had active rat signs as well as the percent of follow up inspections that failed, excluding all zip codes with less than 10 inspections.

"I love you" might be one of the most important combinations of three words in the English language. It's the signal that a romantic relationship is serious, an indication of closeness for a sibling, parent, or child, and a constant refrain for pop songs.

In Mandarin, "I love you" translates as “我爱你” (Wo ai ni), but the way it's used in China might be a little different, and Chinese state media is wondering why.

The Global Times reports that two online videos showing children telling their parents "I love you" have gone viral in China. The first, filmed by an Anhui TV station, shows a number of college students telling their parents they love them. The response are mixed. "Are you drunk?" asked one parent. In another similar video, shot by a Shanxi TV station, a father responded even more bluntly — "I am going to a meeting, so cut the crap."

Even the positive reactions make it clear that the words are expressed rarely: "I am so happy you called to say that, it is the happiest thing that happened to me in 2014," one parent answered.

Why don't Chinese families use those words? Theories revolve around the nature of Confucian teaching, or the remnants of 20th Century Communism. "The parents' responses show that many Chinese are not good at expressing positive emotions," Xia Xueluan, a Sociologistfrom Peking University, told the Global Times. "They are used to educating children with negative language."

This isn't the first time that China has done some soul-searching about familial love — last year China Daily asked a cross-section of people if they said 'I love you' to their parents, spouses, and children. "I have never said 'I love you' to my family, and I don't think I will in the future," one 56-year-old told the paper. "Saying it aloud is embarrassing for me."

Still, that doesn't mean that love can't be expressed. In a separate article, China Daily spoke to Zhao Mengmeng, a 31-year-old woman who said she had never told her father she loved him face-to-face ("I find it a bit odd"). Sometimes actions speak louder than words, however — Zhao gave her father, a single parent, a photo album featuring photographs of them together on almost every one of her birthdays in June 2012. The pictures went viral online, being forwarded hundreds of thousands of times on Weibo.

"I didn't sleep the night I heard about it," her father told China Daily after the story attracted mainstream attention. "I have now memorized some of the comments on the collection of pictures."

You know you're on an eye-catching vehicle when people hurrying through Central Park on one of the coldest days of the year stop to take photos and ask, "What is that thing?"

That thing, in this case, was the RYNO — a $5,300 one-wheeled, self-balancing electric motorcycle. (The term "unicycle" is not welcome here.)

The idea for the RYNO was born seven years ago, when creator Chris Hoffman's daughter asked him to build a working version of a one-wheeled ride she saw in a video game.

Now that the RYNO's about to hit the market, we met with Hoffman to take it for a spin in New York City. With a top speed of 10 mph and a range of 10 miles, it won't take you too far, too fast. But after trying it, we can say it will certainly attract a lot of interest. Then it's up to Hoffman and his team to convert that buzz into sales.

The event expands upon last year's which travelled to five cities.

This year, the "Game of Thrones" exhibit will make its way to seven cities: Mexico City; Austin, Texas at SXSW; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Oslo, Norway; Toronto, Canada; Belfast, Northern Ireland and Vancouver, Canada.

From costumes, to set pieces, and the Iron Throne itself, the exhibit features nearly 100 original items from seasons 1-3, and a few from the upcoming season as well.

An abbreviated preview of the full exhibit is in New York City until 2/1 as part of a 90-minute Time Warner Cable Studio tour.

If you're in the area, and are a Time Warner Cable customer, the event is taking place in the Meatpacking District at 440 W. 14th Street. You can head here for free tickets.

Otherwise, you can view details on the other locations HERE.

If you can't make it, we headed over to the exhibit to see what's inside. Here's a compilation of what to expect based on both years of visiting.

You'll get an up close look at armor and weapons used in the series.

And see two of Daenerys' dragon eggs. (The third was given to creator George R.R. Martin as a wedding gift.)

There's one of Daenary's dragon when it was tiny in season 2.

A full scale model of Daenerys' dragon, Drogon, from season 2 also made an appearance.
