How To Stop A Shave Cut From Bleeding

shaving

What's worse than a rushed morning shave as a result of over-snoozing? Bloodshed, via razor. If Dad taught you to plug up shave nicks with bits of toilet paper, know there are better, faster home remedies for treating wounds and getting out the door. Here are five:

1. Deodorant
Most antiperspirants contain aluminum chloride that can, in addition to shrinking sweat glands, constrict blood vessels and clot a nick.

2. Lip Balm
Smearing on a little ChapStick or Vaseline works like a seal—plus it'll keep bigger cuts from forming unsightly scabs.

3. Ice Cubes
Like swimming pools and your package, the cold shrinks blood vessels, enabling a clot to form fast.

4. Mouthwash
The alcohol in solutions like Listerine acts as an astringent, which halts blood flow by causing tissues to contract.

5. Eye Drops
Red eye relievers like Visine work similarly on cuts: they slow down bleeding by constricting blood vessels.

Watch Secret Footage Of The Epic Lobster Meal That Cost A 'Common People'-Slamming Chinese Official His Job

 Liang Wenyong China

Liang Wenyong, the Communist party secretary of Gushanzi town in the northeastern province of Hebei, has been fired after a secret video of him criticizing the average Chinese citizen while eating an expensive lobster meal went viral, Reuters reports.

One copy of the nearly five minute long video is embedded below. According to China Radio International, at the end of video Liang says, "[Chinese citizens] hold rice bowls and eat pork provided by you, but they still curse your mother. Therefore, the common people, the shameless, do not deserve your attention."

Scrolling text in the video says that the lavish-seafood meal included luxury Wuliangye liquor and Zhonghua cigarettes, and cost up to 10,000 yuan ($1,600).

It's unclear who made the video, but secretly filmed footage of Chinese officials has been used in blackmail cases before, most notoriously in the case of Lei Zhengfu, a Chongqing party boss fired after his sex tape leaked (for more background on that case, check out this great article at Caixin).

Liang's swift removal from power perhaps shows how serious President Xi Jinping's pledge to tackle corrupt officials is, and the spread of the video online shows exactly why China is so worried about "online rumors."

Monaco's Princess Caroline Wore Some Of The Weirdest Shoes We've Ever Seen

Not all royals have the same classic fashion sense as Kate Middleton— case in point, Monaco's Princess Caroline, whose taste in fashion runs a bit more wild.

Yesterday, the Princess, who is the sister of Prince Albert II, attended a fundraising dinner for Monaco's new national museum. The royal wore a black dress and nude heels that looked strangely like feet.

The tromp l'oeil shoes, complete with painted toenails, were part of Céline's spring/summer 2013 collection, and generated a ton of buzz from fashion bloggers last fall.

Refinery29 wrote after they appeared on the runway:

The shoe’s design is ingenious: A pedicure is built right in. Who doesn’t need a reprieve from the nail salon every now and then? Which is great, except the shoe is available only for those with porcelain white skin. As much as we admire her, we doubt [Céline designer Phoebe] Philo is making a tongue-in-cheek statement about the racial homogeny on the typical runway.

Whether you love them or hate them, you definitely can't stop looking at them (neither can we).

Chili's Ziosk Reorder Drinks

Chili's restaurants wants to become the ultimate techno-dining experience. The company this week announced plans to put a tablet on every table in all 823 restaurants nationwide.

The device, a 7-inch tablet made by Ziosk, will allow restaurant goers to order food and drinks, pay their bill and play games at the table. It will also ask for surveys/customer feedback, and let diners enroll in customer rewards programs.

This should be an interesting experiment. Is the world ready for tablet-enhanced dining? Are tablets ready to be used and abused at restaurant tables instead of laminated menus?

Chili's says the tablets will be on tables in the first half of 2014.

Here's a closer look:

17 Things That Will Make You Live Longer

Happy couple

Scientists are making tremendous gains in extending human life.

Google just launched a new startup, Calico, that is focusing on ways to prevent aging.

According to Time, which has the full story, the project will "start small and focus entirely on researching new technologies."

It sounds like it's going to be a while before we see the life-enhancing benefits of Calico, so we've compiled some activities that you can do now to improve your health, and in some cases, stave off death by several years.

Being rich (but not for the reason you think).

Sure, having tons of money will pay for better health care, food, and a personal trainer to keep you in shape, but people who are rich also have more of a key hormone associated with prolonged life spans

Scientists from the University College London found that wealthier people have higher levels of the hormone dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS).

DHEAS is a steroid produced by the adrenal glands and brain that has been linked to a broad range of health benefits, including improved memory, a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, and increased longevity, especially among men.

Hanging out with lots of women.

Researchers at Harvard University found that men who are raised in an environment with few women die sooner than those who grow up around many females.

A high female-to-male ratio increases the likelihood that men will find lifelong partners and get married, also shown to improve lifespan.

Getting married.

Getting hitched is especially good for men. In an analysis of 90 studies, including 500 million people, researchers found that married men lived on average 10 years longer than non-married men.

Married women lived four years longer than non-married women. Scientists cite as one reason for an earlier death, that singles don't have the same social support as married couples.

Anyone who's seen a dog show has probably wondered: "What are the judges doing to those poor dogs out there?"

David Frei has hosted the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show for over 20 years — so, he has a pretty good understanding of what those judges are looking for in a "Best of Show" type dog.

The voice of the Westminster Kennel Club (and founder of a therapy dog charity called Angel on a Leash) tells us how show dogs are judged:

Beer Experts Say These Are The 20 Best Beers In The World

beer octoberfest

Two Stanford computer scientists have demonstrated that beer geeks have great taste.

Stanford University computer science post-doc Julian McAuley and assistant professor Jure Leskovec released a paper earlier this year outlining how our tastes change as we consume more products and gain more expertise.

Their theory was the more experience we have, the more we will like certain products that are less accessible to beginners. They wrote:

It would be a mistake to recommend the iconic film "Seven Samurai" simply because a user enjoys other action movies; rather, we might conclude that they will eventually enjoy it — once they are ready. The same is true for beers, wines, gourmet foods — or any products where users have acquired tastes: the ‘best’ products may not be the most ‘accessible.'

McAuley and Leskovec developed a model to help them separate the "expert" users from the "beginners" on a given review website. You can read all about it here, but briefly, it takes into account the number of reviews a user has written, and how the user's ratings evolved compared to the rest of the "expert" community (those who have written more than 50 reviews).

So with Oktoberfest kicking off this Saturday, we asked them to share data for the highest-rated beers by experts on RateBeer, the largest beer-rating website, with more than three million beer reviews.

#20 Stone's Imperial Russian Stout

Brewed in Escondido, California, experts on RateBeer gave Stone Brewing Co.'s Imperial Russian Stout 4.215 out of 5 stars.

The brew is thick, rich, and pours black with a roasted, complex aroma of black currants, coffee, and anise.

Ratings on RateBeer are out of 5, and factor in aroma, appearance, taste, palate, and an overall score. "Experts" are defined by the Stanford University study as RateBeer users who are assigned the highest experience level based on volume of reviews and how their ratings compare to other "experts." #19 Bell's Batch 7000 Ale

This imperial Stout from Bell's Brewery in Kalamazoo, Michigan was rated 4.226 by experts on RateBeer.

Brewed in honor of the brewery's 7,000th batch, it pours dark with almost no head and flavor undertones of vanilla and caramel.

Ratings on RateBeer are out of 5, and factor in aroma, appearance, taste, palate, and an overall rating.

#18 Bell's Hopslam Ale

Another beer from Kalamazoo's Bell's Brewery, Bell's Hopslam Ale is an Imperial/Double IPA beer that was rated 4.229 stars by RateBeer experts.

Bell's used six different kinds of hops to make this beer, which has floral and grapefruit notes.

Ratings on RateBeer are out of 5, and factor in aroma, appearance, taste, palate, and an overall rating.

The Internet Has Raised $72,000 For The Homeless Guy Who Returned $40,000 In Lost Money

Honest Homeless man Glen James

Last Saturday, a homeless man living in Boston found a backpack with more than $40,000 in cash and traveler’s checks in it. In one of those reminders that humanity is pretty great, the homeless man, Glen James, brought the backpack to the police, who then returned it to its owner. While that alone might have been cause for restoring your faith in humanity, the next part of the story is even better.

Ethan Whittington, a 27-year-old marketing firm employee, heard about James’ good deed online and thought that he deserved a little more than a pat on the back from the police for being a Good Samaritan. The Alabama native, who has no connection to James and has never even been to Boston, started a fundraiser on GoFundMe.com with the goal of raising $50,000 for the man. Since he started the fundraiser yesterday, he has already raised more than $72,000.

ethan whittington"I just found James' story to be inspiring," Whittington told Reuters. "We're so inundated with negative news all the time. James gives hope to people and lets them know not all things in the world are bad."

Nearly 3,000 people have donated money to the campaign so far, with the average donation being around $25.

Whittington is still working out the details on how to give the money to James and to best ensure that it impacts his life in a positive way. At this point, according to Whittington, James has asked for a week to think over how best to use the money.

Money hasn’t been the only thing offered for the campaign. According to Whittington's statement on the GoFundMe site, people have offered to donate clothes, food, and computers. An unnamed “major organization” has also come forward with the possibility of employing James, an undisclosed donation, and offering guidance for the rest of the fundraising campaign.

Whittington told The Boston Globe that he spoke to James for the first time over the phone yesterday. Whittington said that James sounded happy but was worried about the publicity around receiving so much money.

A Group Of Drunk, Dancing Scots Forced A Landing On A Ryanair Flight

A Ryanair flight from Glasgow to Ibiza was forced to make an unscheduled landing in France after a group of drunk passengers started dancing in the aisles.

The airline confirmed Wednesday that the passengers, described as Scots by local police, had been thrown off the plane at Beauvais airport north of the French capital on Tuesday evening and questioned by authorities.

"They thought they had already arrived in Ibiza," a police spokesman said, explaining that after buying duty-free alcohol in Glasgow, they drank it on the plane and started dancing, causing such a ruckus that the pilot decided to divert to Beauvais.

The plane eventually took off again without the partying passengers, who were released in the early hours of Wednesday and directed to a Beauvais train station to go to Paris.

According to Beauvais airport management, the Ryanair crew has made an official complaint against the disruptive passengers, who could face charges at a later date.

Ryanair spokesman Robin Kiely confirmed the incident.

"A Ryanair flight from Glasgow Prestwick to Ibiza (17 Sep) diverted into Paris Beauvais after a small group of passengers became disruptive on-board," Kiely said.

"On arrival, police removed and detained these 14 individuals. Ryanair apologised to the other 160 passengers for any inconvenience and delay to their journey, but will not tolerate unruly or disruptive passengers. This matter is now being dealt with by the French police."

Local police put the number of passengers questioned at 16.

Christy Walton Wal-Mart wyoming mansion

Wal-Mart heiress Christy Walton is selling her Wyoming mansion for $12.5 million, according to real estate blog Trulia.

Located off the beaten path in Teton Village in Western Wyoming, the fully furnished home has 200-year-old reclaimed oak floors, tall ceilings, and hand-crafted Albertini windows imported from Italy.

The 2.45-acre estate not only houses the 8,600-square-foot, six-bedroom main mansion, but also a nearby summer guest cabin with two extra bedrooms that looks out onto the property's creek.

There's also a nearby three-car, heated garage and a heated driveway for all those cold Wyoming winters.

Now the 6th richest person in America, according to Forbes— and the 11th richest on its list of global billionaires— Walton is known for being extremely private. The mansion, which is currently listed with Christie's affiliate Jackson Hole Real Estate, is actually owned by a blind trust, but Christy Walton's name has appeared on building permits for the address, according to Trulia.

BARISTAS OF AMERICA: Please Stop Screwing Up My Cappuccino

$

0

cappuccino starbucks

The cappuccino is a basic Italian coffee drink that, along with the latte, has become popular in the United States since the 1990s. Unfortunately, baristas at many cappuccino-serving establishments don't really know how to make the drink.

Among the only places where you can consistently get a good cappuccino is at the controversial brand that popularized the drink in the first place: Starbucks.

If you order a short or tall cappuccino at Starbucks (the larger sizes contain too much milk), then you will receive an appropriate quantity of hot, foamy milk on top of fresh espresso. It may not be the best in the world, but it will be adequate.

I know Starbucks takes this stuff seriously because I worked there during college and was forced to study their precise methods for making drinks and had to pass a test in which my cappuccino was weighed to see if I obtained the proper ratio of steamed milk to foam. Having gone as a customer, too, I can affirm that other Starbucks baristas know how to make a cappuccino.

The same can't be said of millions of baristas across the United States.

You are liable to be disappointed at a hipster cafes and fancy restaurants and almost guaranteed to get a bad cappuccino at most cafe chains and the average restaurant. When I order cappuccinos and can see and hear baristas screw them up, I wish I could give them some simple advice. Here's what I would tell them:

1) You need more foam.

A proper cappuccino should be made with foamy milk, or, if you find that concept hard to fathom, just aim for half steamed milk and half foam.

Bad baristas put in nearly all steamed milk, with a thin layer of foam on top. In other words, they give you a latte.

In fairness, it requires skill to generate good foam. You have to hold the steel pitcher of milk so that the steam wand goes less than an inch below the surface. There will be a hissing sound, the milk will spin, and bubbles will form.

If you hear a screeching sound, then you're placing the wand too high; if very little is happening, then you're placing it too low. Not getting it? Ask your colleague or look up some YouTube videos and keep practicing.

2) Stop reusing steamed milk.

Lazy or ignorant baristas steam a bunch of milk for one drink and then let it sit for minutes before using it or steaming it again and using it in another drink.

These are huge mistakes.

The longer steamed milk sits, the further it gets from that ideal frothy mixture and the closer it gets to a distinct separation between milk and foam. Try drinking a cappuccino with stale foam and you will find that the foam floats backward when you tip the cup, letting espresso and milk but no foam into your mouth. Meanwhile, old steamed milk gets cold. As for steaming milk a second time, any serious barista will tell you that this won't produce good foam.

When I worked at Starbucks, we were instructed to throw out unused steamed milk. That's right, a public corporation tells employees to throw out essential materials rather than let them be used in the wrong way. Of course, Starbucks baristas learn to steam approximately the appropriate amount of milk for each order.

3) Stop scalding the milk.

Starbucks baristas steam milk to a temperature between 150°F and 170°F. Other suggestions I've found from coffee sites suggest more like 140°F to 160°F. In any case, you do not want to go much higher than 170°F or the milk will scald and you will start burning tongues.

Try getting one of the thermometers they make specifically for this purpose. Use one of those for long enough and you will be able to tell when the milk is done without it.

4) Don't give me a huge cup.

At some places, like Starbucks, this decision comes down to the customer. At other places customers don't have a choice.

In a huge cup, you will inevitably have too much milk relative to espresso and you will probably have too much milk relative to foam. Pretty much everything will end up tasting like a latte.

Here's the Starbucks diagram for a cappuccino, specifying a mixture of foamy milk (note: the ratio here is a little milkier than you would find in Italy, which is why I recommend ordering a short or a tall):

cappuccino

If you prefer to think in terms of milk and foam separately, check out this (non-Starbucks) recipe sheet for cappuccinos and other drinks:

Dating Site PlentyofFish Buys FastLife To Get Folks To Try 'Speed Dating'

Markus Frind

Online dating apps are a great way to discover a new squeeze but eventually the two people have to meet.

This gave Markus Frind, CEO of PlentyofFish, and idea. How can dating sites do a better job of in-person meetups? PlentyofFish already conducts a lot of events. So he bought a company called FastLife, which puts together "speed dating" events in cities worldwide.

Speed dating is where singles briefly talk to everyone that attends an event, in the hopes that sparks will immediately fly. It turns out that it's a very profitable part of the dating world, too, Frind says.

He didn't disclose what he paid for the 13-employee company, based in San Francisco and Toronto, but it's all part of his plan to invest $30 million into his company to transform the online dating scene into something more.

Business Insider: How big will the combined dating sites be ... how many users?

Markus Frind: FastLife is an offline dating business that generates revenue from hosting speed dating and singles’ events. We believe FastLife is the biggest speed dating company in the English speaking world. The user base is small but the company has a very strong ARPU [average revenue per user]. We will be heavily investing into this business (FastLife) and expanding it rapidly across the US, Canada, the UK, and Australia.

PlentyOfFish has 3.3 million daily users and 10 billion page views a month. PlentyOfFish users have been hosting user generated singles events since 2003. Our users host over 400 events a month with over 40,000 singles in attendance each month.

BI: How many employees will PlentyOfFish get with the acquisition?

MF: We will acquire 13 full-time employees. But the business depends on hosts who actually host the events. We will be hiring hundreds of hosts over the next year. The company currently has 80 hosts worldwide. We’re also acquiring offices in Canada, San Fran and Australia.

BI: By investing more than $30M, does that mean you're going to acquire more dating sites?

MF: It’s difficult to acquire other dating sites because PlentyOfFish has more active users. We are interested in finding businesses like FastLife that can greatly increase our monetization per use.

New Yorkers May Be More Superficial Than People In Los Angeles When It Comes To Dating

$

coupleThere seems to be a general consensus, and even data, that suggests daters in Los Angeles can be very superficial.

But now there's new data to suggest otherwise.

Dating startup Twine, which pegs itself as a non-superficial, anti-Tinder, has noticed that its Los Angeles users are engaged more than its users in any other city, Twine marketing manager Etan Berkowitz tells Business Insider.

With Twine, you chat first and see who you're talking to later. Tinder, on the other hand, is basically Hot or Not for your mobile phone, meaning you only look at pictures of potential mates at first.

Out of Twine's undisclosed weekly active Los Angeles users, 70% of them are engaging within the app. So that means people are actually connecting with their matches, getting to know each other, and then revealing what they look like.

Compare that to New York, where the engagement rate is 55% among its weekly active users. In San Francisco, it's about 40%.

Since launching in July, over 100,000 people have downloaded the app. Twine currently has about 50,000 weekly active users.

The $272,220 Bentley Convertible Is Awesome — But Is It Worth It?

2013 Bentley Continental GT Speed Convertible

Although it is best known for its huge sedans like the Mulsanne, Bentley insists it makes cars that are meant to be driven by their owners, not chauffeurs.

After spending a few days in the 2013 Continental GT Speed Convertible, we believe them. The GT Speed is a real driver's car, with 616 horsepower coming from a W12 engine, permanent all-wheel drive, and a quite fun Sport mode.

But we've had just as much fun driving in cars that cost a tiny fraction of this one. The GT Speed has a $238,700 MSRP; the well-equipped one we tested runs for $272,220.

So what do you get for all that dough? Here's a full breakdown of everything that comes standard (like the knurled gear knob and "seatbelt presenter") and the often superfluous options (try carbon fiber panels in the backseat and a neck warmer for chilly nights).

First off, let's acknowledge it's a great looking car. Not the sexiest we've ever seen, but it does a better job than most convertibles of combining comfort with performance.

Okay, standard features first. Hands down the best one: the W12 engine that produces 616 horsepower. (Enough to go from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds.)

There's trunk space for two people's bags. The car seats four, but the backseat is so small, no one will tolerate sitting in it for any kind of trip.

The 25 Smartest Colleges In America

$

guy in glasses sitting in classSchools are constantly ranked on everything from the beauty of their campuses to their party scenes, but rarely on their students' intelligence.

Exclusively for Business Insider, Dr. Jonathan Wai, a Duke University Talent Identification Program research scientist and psychologist, computed a new ranking of America's colleges and universities based purely on smarts, as shown by the student body's average scores on standardized tests.

Though these tests are often criticized, research shows that both the SAT and ACT are excellent measures of general cognitive ability, and the scores of a school's student body give an accurate snapshot of their abilities.

Cognitive training company Lumosity took a crack at this last year, ranking more than 400 schools based on students' performance on brain-training games. There were a couple of problems with its list, however, as they only had data available from students who played the games, meaning some of the smartest schools got ignored, and there is no peer-reviewed research showing their games are a reliable and valid measure of smarts.

Now, for the first time, we present the real smartest colleges in America (Read more about our methodology and reasoning here).

25. Brown University

Location: Providence, R.I.

Average test score: 1425

U.S. News Ranking: 14

Lumosity Ranking: 30

If current building proposals are any indication, New York's skyline is going to keep getting taller and taller.

For an idea of what the city will look like a few years from now, SkyscraperPage user sbarn produced gorgeous renderings of the city that incorporate current architecture projects. We first discovered them over at New York Yimbly.

To make the renderings he took existing photographs of the city's skyline, and enhanced them with future building proposals and ongoing projects, such as Hudson Yards, One 57, and the World Trade Center Complex.

Check out how dramatic the changes between now and 2020 are going to be in NYC.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has closed a major tunnel for more than a year to make repairs after Hurricane Sandy hit, and it's no more prepared for a major storm now than it was a year ago.

But those problems obfuscate the fact that the vast majority of the time, the trains run just fine.

It wasn't always this way. In 1984, trains averaged just 9,000 miles traveled between mechanical failures.

That's about when the MTA began putting real work into keeping trains running. Now, the MTA's Scheduled Maintenance System works to fix aging components before they fail — and has improved that number to 160,000 miles.

That's thanks to the NYC Transit employees who work at facilities in Coney Island, repairing, replacing, and rebuilding the key components that keep the 40-ton subway cars in working order.

On average, subway cars travel 60,000 miles each year.

Over their lifetime, that comes out to 2.4 million miles.

That means the cars have to run for 40 years. (So if you think a car looks like it was built in the 1970s, you may be right.)

Carnival Would Like You To Please Stop Thinking About 'The Poop Cruise'

Seven months after the notoriously hideous 'Poop Cruise' left more than 4,000 people stranded in the Gulf of Mexico, Carnival is rolling out a $25 million advertising campaign to highlight some of the more pleasant experiences its passengers have had.

In a television advertisement from Arnold Worldwide, Carnival uses customer-submitted family photos and videos to show off the "unforgettable moments" people experience on its cruises. The spot will run starting Monday in conjunction with an online "Moment Tracker," which will display Instagram photos taken by ten passengers aboard the Carnival Breeze.

Carnival says it's hoping to re-ignite consumer interest in the brand prior to the beginning of the new year, the peak time people make cruise ship reservations.

Following a checkered recent past that has seen four Carnival ships catch fire in 15 years, the brand has a long road ahead of it. Carnival announced Tuesday it will let passengers off its ships and offer a 110% refund if they tell the company they want to leave at any point during the first 24 hours of the cruise.
