RANKED: The Ivy League Schools From Worst To Best

$

Ivy League Ranking Business Insider Graphic

Even though the Ivy League is an athletics conference, the eight member schools are better known as academic and intellectual powerhouses that attract some of the best student talent in the world.

While all of these schools will rank high on any list of the best universities, we decided to look internally, and see which academic institution is the best in the Ivy League.

We examined the Ivies based on six overall qualities — each judged on several specific rankings — and then combined the six lists into a final overall ranking. The six qualities we used were Academics, Affordability, Campus, Job Prospects, Student Body, and Student Life. We've included how each school placed on these lists below.

One thing is for certain — Harvard, Yale, and Princeton are in a league of their own. Combined, the three schools only ranked in the bottom half of any of our categories once, and there was a massive difference in points between our top three spots and the rest of our final list.

Here are all eight Ivy League schools, from worst to best:

#8 Brown University — Providence, Rhode Island

Brown University Campus

#4 Student Body
#5 Student Life
#6 Academics
#6 Affordability (tie)
#7 Job Prospects
#8 Campus

Students at Brown are among the most attractive in the Ivy League and they love their university — they rate their professors highly and many give back to the school. However, Brown's small endowment and low ranked facilities earned the bottom spot on our Campus list, and the school also placed low on our ranking of Job Prospects.

#7 Dartmouth College — Hanover, New Hampshire

Dartmouth College Campus

#3 Affordability
#4 Job Prospects
#7 Academics (tie)
#7 Campus
#7 Student Body
#7 Student Life

Although Hanover may not be many people's first choice to spend four years, Dartmouth has a stunning campus and a great social life — dominated by the school's Greek scene. The school is fairly homogeneous though and ranked towards the bottom of our Student Body list, getting low marks for diversity and international students, as well as Academics.

#6 Columbia University — New York, New York

Columbia Campus

#1 Academics
#5 Campus

#6 Job Prospects
#6 Student Body
#8 Affordability
#8 Student Life

Columbia took the top spot on Academics ranking, boosted by a high percentage of classes with less than 20 students and their well-regarded Core Curriculum program. However, while the school's New York City location makes it a great choice for students who want a traditional campus and all the benefits of a busy city, Columbia lacks a strong on-campus social scene and scored last on our Student Life list, as well as Affordability.

#5 Cornell University — Ithaca, New York

ithaca cornell clocktower

#2 Campus
#3 Student Life

#5 Affordability
#7 Academics (tie)
#8 Job Prospects
#8 Student Body

With a thriving Greek scene and one of the best college towns in the country, Cornellians have access to a great social life and one of the Ivy League's most "gorgeous" campuses — landing in the top three for both Campus and Student Life. Unfortunately, the school's high acceptance rate and large class sizes may prove to be a hurdle for students looking for employment after graduation, and the school placed low in Academics and last for Job Prospects.

#4 University of Pennsylvania — Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Ben Franklin Statue University Pennsylvania

#2 Student Life
#5 Academics

#5 Job Prospects
#5 Student Body
#6 Affordability (tie)
#6 Campus

The highest ranked Ivy outside of the top three, Penn offers a great combination of strong academics and a top notch social life — both with their on-campus Greek life and across Philadelphia — grabbing the second spot on our Student Life list. Despite a low ranking for student's intelligence, Penn graduates tend to a get a high starting salary for the first jobs and many will end up multi-millionaires.

#3 Princeton University — Princeton, New Jersey

princeton cheerleaders

#1 Student Body (tie)
#2 Job Prospects
#3 Academics

#3 Campus
#4 Affordability
#6 Student Life

Princeton students prove their intelligence by choosing the school with the lowest billed tuition in the Ivy League and some of the highest salaries for graduates, putting it in the top half of both our Affordability and Job Prospects rankings. Princeton may not be the ideal college town, and dipped into the bottom half of our Student Life list, but based on high diversity and admissions standards, the university shared the number one spot on Student Life.

#2 Yale University — New Haven, Connecticut

Yale University Campus Students

#1 Student Body (tie)
#1 Student Life
#2 Affordability

#3 Job Prospects
#4 Academics
#4 Campus

Yale students are a triple threat — diverse, brainy, and attractive — and the school was at the top of our Student Body ranking, as well as Student Life. Yalies are some of the happiest in the Ivy League, and with top three spots on both Affordability and Job Prospects, they have every right to be.

#1 Harvard University — Cambridge, Massachusetts

Harvard University

#1 Affordability
#1 Campus
#1 Job Prospects
#2 Academics
#3 Student Body
#3 Student Life

Harvard was the clear winner in our rankings, taking the top spot in half of our categories — Affordability, Campus, and Job Prospects — and never placing out of the top three. Boston is a great city to attend college, and Harvard's historic and picturesque campus makes it all the better. The university's reputation is stellar — armed with a Harvard degree students have little issue securing a great paying job after graduation, setting them up for the best return on investment of any Ivy.

Whether you're angling for a Nobel Prize, hope to make millions of dollars, or just looking for a great four years, Harvard is the best school in the Ivy League.

The Ultra-Hot Death Ray From London's Infamous 'Walkie Talkie' Building Is Now Being Used To Fry An Egg On The Street

Another amazing development in the story of the Walkie-Talkie building (the new construction in London's financial district that's emitting light that's so hot it can melt cars).

Anyway, in a further show of the building's heat-emitting power, reporter Jim Waterson is literally frying an egg out on the street.

Anyway, the egg fry was successful, as this video shows. They served the egg on a sandwich.

And in case you can't remember what the building looks like, here you go. You can see why its curvy, reflective glass is creating such a powerful force.

Nouriel Roubini Ordered To Remove The Hot Tub From His Infamous Party Pad

Economist Nouriel Roubini, known as much for his doom and gloom forecasts as he is for his love of partying, is being forced to remove the giant hot tub from his Manhattan penthouse, according to the New York Post.

Department of Buildings spokesman Kelly Magee told New York Post's Page Six:

"The department inspected in response to a complaint on 2/5/13 and issued a violation for operating the roof contrary to its approved use. The roof is approved for use as a terrace according to the building’s certificate of occupancy."

New York Magazine describes Roubini's Tribeca party pad as a "a vagina-walled downtown loft." This after blogger Julia Allison posted photos on her blog and took them down after Roubini requested she do so to maintain his privacy.

Roubini has previously said that he is a "rock star among geeks, wonks, and nerds," and that at his parties he looks for a ratio of "ten girls to one guy."

Here's a screen-shot of the complaint (via Curbed):

The Architect Behind London's Car-Melting Skyscraper Has Had This Problem Before

Rafael Viñoly, the Uruguayan-born architect who designed the new London building that's now frying eggs across the street because of its intense reflection, is the same architect who designed another notorious "fry-scraper" in Las Vegas years ago.

In 2010, guests of Viñoly's Vdara Hotel and Spa at MGM's Aria began complaining of severe burns from the glare being reflected off the building's facade.

"It felt like I had a chemical burn. I couldn't imagine why my head was burning," the Daily Mail quoted one lawyer as saying. "Within 30 seconds, the back of my legs were burning. My first thought was, 'Jesus, they destroyed the ozone layer!'"

Viñoly's website boasts of Vdara's  "slender profile and curvature, which responds to Harmon Circle and the interlocking arcs of the ARIA hotel complex located across the shared circular drive. Three parallel, offset arcs rising to varying heights comprise the crescent-shaped skyscraper."

Similar curvature is being blamed for the current situation in London.

The Mail went on to report that Viñoly "foresaw the issue with the reflecting sun but thought they had solved it by installing a high-tech film on the south-facing panes of glass," but that an MGM spokesman had conceded the measures fell short.

We just got the following comment on the London situation, but are awaiting further clarification on how a repeat occurred:

A joint statement from Land Securities and Canary Wharf on 20 Fenchurch Street:

"We are taking the issue of light reflecting from 20 Fenchurch Street seriously, and are looking into the matter as a priority.

"The phenomenon is caused by the current elevation of the sun in the sky. It currently lasts for approximately 2 hours per day, with initial modeling suggesting that it will be present for approximately 2-3 weeks.

"As responsible developers we are making every effort to keep local businesses informed and we have communicated with them regularly since the issue first appeared. While we investigate the situation further we have liaised with the City of London to suspend three parking bays in the area which may be affected.

"In addition, we are consulting with local businesses and the City to address the issue in the short-term, while also evaluating longer-term solutions to ensure the issue cannot recur in future."

29 Reasons Why The Minnesota State Fair Is The Best State Fair In America [PHOTOS]

Minnesota State Fair MN 2013

The Minnesota State Fair is simply the best state fair in the U.S.

The annual fair, which ended yesterday, has the highest daily attendance of any state fair in the country (Its total attendance only trails slightly behind the Texas State Fair, and that's because the Texas State Fair goes two weeks longer than Minnesota's.)

Since 1859, the Great Minnesota Get Together has been the main attraction, bringing tens of thousands of Minnesotans to the Twin Cities. There have only been a handful of times that Minnesota hasn't hosted the fair since its inception — including during the Civil War; in 1945, due to war-time fuel shortages; and because of a polio epidemic in 1946.

This year, more than 1.7 million visitors flocked to the fair, dealing with temperatures that often topped 90 degrees. They came to see the butter sculptures and livestock, ride the rides, and eat all the foods on a stick they possibly could.

We visited the Minnesota state fair this year to see firsthand why it's the nation's greatest. But don't be sad if you missed out  there's always next year!

The Minnesota State Fair is the biggest state fair in the country, in terms of daily attendance. Each year, over 1.7 million people flock to the Great Minnesota Get Together.

Into farm life? There are plenty of cows, sheep, goats, and baby animals to pet at the fair. There are even some llamas!

Or if birds are more your thing, there are some prize cockerels, roosters, turkeys, and ducks around, too.

Life in Russia 100 years ago Sergei M. Prokudin-Gorskii

Last Friday, early color photographer Sergei Mikhailovish Prokudin-Gorskii would have celebrated his 150th birthday. The Russian master died in 1944 at the age of 81.

But he left behind over 2,600 amazing photographs of the Russian Empire he had taken between 1909 and 1915.

The Prokudin-Gorskii Collection at the Library of Congress shows the ethnographic and geographic diversity of the vast Russian Empire through images of people, religious architecture, pastoral views, and transportation and agricultural workers.

Prodkundin-Gorskii was remarkable for his use of a special camera that captured images with a red, green, and blue filter, which later allowed him to create "near true color" images.

He made numerous photographic trips throughout his lifetime, traveling thousands of miles across the expansive Russian Empire.

The resulting collection is his incredible legacy.

Here is Sergeĭ Mikhaĭlovich Prokudin-Gorskiĭ himself (on the right) sitting with two men in Cossak dress.

jennifer sky

A former teen model says she was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder from working in the fashion industry.

Jennifer Sky tells The Cut that she was scouted by modeling agents and moved to New York when she was 16.

The experience was traumatizing, according to Sky. She writes:

From neglect to molestation to topless photo shoots to men exposing themselves to being made to stand in a freezing pool until I turned blue, I would be abused for the entirety of my career...My naturally outgoing personality changed: I became withdrawn and startled easily. It became hard for me to travel new routes, to eat at new restaurants, or even shop at the corner store. I became so timid I no longer spoke. I eventually did not leave my room unless I had a job or a casting.

She quit the industry when she was 17 and became an actress with roles in Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Xena.

Today, she stresses the importance of legislation that protects young models.

Sky moved to New York in 2010. She's working as a writer and attending therapy.

brooklyn heights Willow Street $12 million

Brooklyn could have a new contender for most expensive home, thanks to a $12 million townhouse that just hit the market.

The previous record for the borough was an $11 million Brooklyn Heights brownstone, which sold in in 2012.

The newly listed townhouse is also in Brooklyn Heights (via Curbed).

Located on Willow Street, the 1800s-era home has been renovated with a modern kitchen and appliances, but its listing at Brown Harris Stevens says it retains its original French doors and wood-burning fireplaces.

It has six bedrooms and four and half baths, with the entire top floor of the mansion dedicated to  a master suite with cathedral ceilings and exposed wood beams.

This is 104 Willow Street in Brooklyn Heights. It was built in 1826, and is asking for $12 million.

rafa nadalOne of many interesting facts about words we learned in "The Meaning of Everything: The Story of the Oxford English Dictionary" by Simon Winchester (2003) is that the most complex word in the language is "set."

This "immense" three-letter word has some 430 senses, requiring a 60,000-word definition spread over 24 pages in the tiny print of the published dictionary.

Even for the OED, a dictionary that gives comprehensive definitions and examples for every "core" word in the English language, this is an insanely long definition.

So what does "set" mean? Check it out:

7 Crazy Facts About The $75 Million Mansion Calvin Klein Is Building In The Hamptons

calvin klein meadow lane

After five years of construction, designer Calvin Klein's minimalist mansion in Southampton, NY is nearly complete.

The home, on a 10-acre oceanfront lot on Meadow Lane, cost some $75 million to build, including the price of the land.

The New York Times Jacob Bernstein delved into the property in this weekend's Sunday Styles section. The entire piece is worth a read, but here are some of the juiciest tidbits about the house, which has been the talk of the Hamptons all summer:

  • Klein gut-renovated the original home on the property, then tore it down entirely and began building from scratch.

  • Before starting construction, the designer built a life-sized mock-up of the project out of plywood, costing an estimated $350,000.

  • He's been through three different architects in five years.

  • Klein is extremely hands-on. "As [friends] tell it, he is here six days a week, sometimes for several hours at a time. He talks about the house nonstop," Bernstein writes. "He has personally vetted and approved every floorboard and object inside, even designed much of the furniture himself when he thought there was nothing out there that quite met his exacting design standards."

  • He gets frequent construction photos and updates from his friend Aby Rosen, the well-known real estate developer who lives next door.

  • Klein designed every room with sliding glass doors "so that anywhere he is can essentially become an outdoor space."

  • The guest wing connects to the main home via an underground passageway. And another nearby building will be used as a screening room.

11 Charts That Show How New York Weddings Have Totally Changed In The Last 30 Years

$

The folks at Rap Genius have come up with an awesome way to explore The New York Times' Vows section.

They just launched Wedding Crunchers, which lets users measure the frequency of specific phrases in the newspaper's wedding announcements since 1981.

Rap Genius puts the site's mission perfectly: "What do the world’s most self-important people think is important?"

Todd Schneider, who oversaw the project, said the idea was born from "a lifelong fascination with the cultural milieu of the New York Times, combined with statistical interest in various famous marriage problems" [that's a game theory reference, for you non-statistics nerds].

The searchable database includes 60,000 wedding announcements, and took about two weeks to make.

Wedding Crunchers has already created some neat charts showing wedding trends over time. Schneider said that for him, the most interesting trend was that the announcements have become less WASPy and aristocratic since the 1980s.

We've included some of the charts here, with permission from Wedding Crunchers. Read more about the site over at Rap Genius >

This graph shows how frequently the numbers "25" and "35" have shown up in wedding announcements over time. The Times' Vows column underlies the trend that people are getting married later in life.

wedding crunchers

References to New England boarding schools have become less frequent over time, signaling an increase in diversity  or at least a decrease in WASP-iness.
