Kylie Jenner just trademarked 'Kylie Kon' and 'Kylie Museum,' and it hints at a whole new revenue stream for the world's youngest billionaire

Kylie Jenner

Kylie Jenner's plans for world domination continue.

E! News reported on Wednesday that the 22-year-old makeup mogul has filed trademarks for the phrases: "Kylie Con," "Kylie Kon," and "Kylie Museum."

According to the outlet, Jenner's filings indicate that she hopes to use the phrases on accessories and clothing, both for children and adults, in addition to beauty-related consultation services, workshops, classes, exhibitions, and "interactive experiences for social entertainment purposes." Washington DC trademark lawyer Josh Gerben, who shared the filings on his Twitter account, appears to be the first person to report on the news.

These trademark filings are just the latest step in Jenner's plan to build a commercial empire of goods and product services

As previously reported by Business Insider, Jenner announced in November her intention to sell a majority stake of her namesake makeup company to beauty conglomerate Coty Inc., which valued the brand at $1.2 billion. Jenner sold a 51% stake for $600 million. The Coty-Kylie Cosmetics "long-term strategic partnership" commenced earlier this month, at the same time the company announced a new CEO would take over.

Despite the sale, Jenner remains the public face of her brand, which is apparent in her social media posting, advertising both her makeup and eponymous skincare lines. Jenner founded Kylie Cosmetics in 2015 and just two years after its launch, Forbes valued it at $800 million. In 2019, because of the success of her company, Jenner became the youngest "self-made" billionaire in history, according to Forbes, with an estimated net worth of $1 billion— a fortune that can only grow as Jenner adds possible museums, conventions, and other interactive experiences to her personal brand.

In October, Jenner filed two trademark applications for "rise and shine" after a viral video of her singing the phrase to her daughter went viral, Business Insider previously reported. Shortly afterward, she began selling merchandise with the phrase on it, including a hoodie that had a picture of her face as the sun for $65.

On social media, the young mogul is known for her luxurious lifestyle. In addition to having a car collection worth nearly $14 million, she is a collector of rare Hermès handbags and mansions in Calabasas.

  • Trade Coffee Co. is the online matchmaker for coffee lovers and their coffee.
  • From run-of-the-mill "coffee that tastes like coffee" to "hints of something different" and downright "surprising and unconventional," Trade offers lovingly grown and roasted beans for all.
  • Trade also offers equipment from coffee pots and cold brew kits to filters and scales — basically everything you need to make the perfect cup of coffee.
  • With subscriptions starting at $12.50 per 12-ounce bag, it's a step up in price from what you might find at big-box stores. But if you enjoy your morning cup, there's nothing more precious and empowering than dialing it in perfectly each and every morning.
  • Read more: The best coffee and espresso pod machines you can buy; The best espresso machines

"Put your mug's fate in our hands with over 2,000,000 happy coffee matches — and counting!" may reek of gimmick, but we tried Trade Coffee Co.'s matchmaking service, and I, for one, have nothing but good things to say for the brand. Why? Never has a coffee buying experience ever led me through six web pages of consultative questions in order to pair me with a bag of coffee. After the folks (or algorithm) at Trade presented me with a suggestion, I took it. Now, here I sit, feet up, sipping from a soupcon that is surely delivering me ever closer — with each shot — to a time and place where I can confidently claim that I am, indeed, living my very best life.

Okay, I might be taking you for a bit of a ride here, but if you want to learn how to profile your ideal cuppa (and maybe self, while you're at it), there may be no better way than with the help of Trade Coffee. Depending on your profile, Trade may match you with The Classics, which is their best value plan at $25 for two 12-ounce bags. Then there's The Hookup for those seeking something "surprising and unconventional" at $15 to $22 per 12-ounce bag.

The process, intimidating at the outset, perhaps, is so thoroughly yet tidily detailed that it's a breeze.

What we like most about the selection and customization process is how unassuming it is. You don't feel like you're diving in headfirst with a sommelier who's just out to make you feel uninformed. Instead, you get a clean page layout with four options to identify your level of java snob-hood: from newbie to nerd.

trade1

Then it's on to your preferred brewing method, which, depending on how much you care, could dictate the roast level and/or type of bean you want to be buying and why that might matter. And if you're using a pod machine, a support team is ready to chat whether you use a Keurig, Nespresso, or apparently, any other type of pod machine.

trade2

Next, you'll select what, if anything, you add to your coffee, because they've decided to factor in even that.

trade3

Then there's your preferred roast level. This is a common question, of course, but again, like wine, maybe something we don't all necessarily understand. Trade also offers a little explainer about roast levels and how each roasting brand uses its own "scale" while Trade scores all coffees on their own scale so that there's no confusion within their service.

trade4

And this is where it all might get a little tricky. Just the same, though, don't overthink it; you can always try more. Be bold.

trade5

Do you buy ground, whole bean coffee, or both? This is fairly self-explanatory, though Trade makes a point to push grinding your own coffee for the best brew you can get, and we're with them. If we can offer a single piece of conjecture, to you, dear reader, let it be this: If you're going to invest in good coffee, grind it yourself or you are missing the point of luxuriating in this splurge altogether.

Tasting notes

Some of us on the team tried coffee; others tried equipment. Below is a short roundup of what each of us tried along with our findings and/or tasting notes respective of what we tried.

Leftist Espresso by Gimme!

Buy Gimme! Leftist Espresso from Trade Coffee Co. for $16

I rarely go a day without coffee but typically settle for the brew in our office. The Gimme! Leftist Espresso was a nice change to my routine and provided a strong and sweet batch of coffee. I received the whole bean bag and decided to grind it into medium grounds to use with my French press. Since it's a light-medium roast, it was smooth and had a higher level of caffeine — meaning that I only had to have one cup to get through my morning to-do list. The actual coffee was a treat, plus I felt like it was made especially for me after using the "get matched" quiz on the Trade website. — Megan Foster, Insider Picks intern

Petunias Espresso by Revelator Coffee Co.

Buy Petunias Coffee by Revelator Coffee from Trade Coffee Co. for $12.50

I went for the "surprising and unconventional" choice because you only live once, as they say. I'm rarely able to place undertones within things like coffee, wine, or beer. "Enjoyable" and "not enjoyable" are my usual descriptors, and to each our own, I always believe, but this was something I could savor, and did I ever. A bitter, velvety dark chocolate tone was punctuated by hints of red stonefruit (cherry, I suppose) as vividly as any beverage ever delivered flavor to my palate. Okay, maybe it wasn't all that distinct (at least not for me), but it was different, and each and every morning, while the bag lasted, the thought of that thick crema greeting my tongue was enough for me to peel off the sheets and (almost) make it to work on time. Now that's something. I'd be happy to wake with this sensation every morning for the rest of my life, and therein am seriously considering one of these subscriptions for myself. My benevolent overlords might appreciate this motion, too, should it continue to deliver me to work on time. — Owen Burke, Insider Picks senior reporter

Cold Brew Coffee Bags by Trade Coffee Co.

Buy a pack of 20 cold brew bags from Trade Coffee Co. for $7.50

Typically, I use this cheap, utility-first plastic cold brew bottle to make a quart of cold brew at home. But on the go, one reusable Trade Cold Brew Bag can make up to five batches per 12 ounce bag of coffee (and $7.50 gets you 20 bags). Pretty much all you need is the Trade cold brew bag, some coffee, and a glass on hand (the company notes that mason jars work well, and I'd agree). You'll still have to wait 12 to 18 hours for your cold brew, but it's easy, mobile, and the bags are blessedly compostable, made from corn-based fiber. — Mara Leighton, Insider Picks reporter

French Press by Yama

Buy the Yama French Press from Trade Coffee Co. for $36

I've been using this French Press for about a month, and I'm really enjoying it, but I figure I should get this out of the way now: It's really only made for one or two cups of coffee, so if you're looking for a family-sized carafe, this is not it.

If a small French press is what you're looking for, this one is solid, though not perfect. The superfine mesh filter does a great job of straining grounds, provided you have the top mechanism properly nestled on before you press the plunger down. But the grounds get caught between the mesh and the metal pieces that hold it into place, making it hard to clean.

That said, there are a few other pros and cons. The base is rubberized, so it's hard to spill. Big pro in my house. But there are plastic parts to the press, which I don't love (though they are BPA-free). The metal handle and base come off in one piece for easy cleaning, another pro.

Overall, I really like this French press. Is it the absolute best one you can buy? Probably not. Will it work and be relatively easy to clean and take care of? Absolutely. — Sally Kaplan, Insider Picks editor

Note: The Yama French Press is currently sold out on Trade's website, but it's available on Amazon for $24

The bottom line: Who's this really for?

If you're already spending $10 to $15 on a 12-ounce bag of coffee, if you want to learn how to pull a better shot of espresso, brew cold brew, make a better pour-over, or just learn a bit (or a lot) more about making coffee in general, then Trade Coffee might be for you. But if you don't reeeaaally love coffee, and coffee is just a utilitarian pick-me-up, then stick with your Folgers or your Maxwell House.

Coffee subscription services like this one are either for snobs and snobs-to-be or academics. And whether it's the cheap pre-ground stuff off the shelf at Walmart or the award-winning $17-a-bag, Fair-Trade-certified, all-organic beans from Trade or Atlas or Driftaway, we're just trying to help you find the best way to keep doing you.

Take the "Get Matched" quiz at Trade Coffee Co. for a personalized subscription or explore single matches, starting at $12.50 per 12-ounce bag.

7 strategies that can make your relationship happier in 10 minutes or less

happy couple

  • Relationships are complicated, and they take a lot of work to keep healthy.
  • Here are some easy strategies for strengthening your relationship on a daily basis, from saying "thanks" to putting a ban on talking about housework.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Relationships take work.

A lot of work.

But a week at a couples' retreat — while potentially nice — isn't the only way to reestablish intimacy.

You have multiple opportunities every day to show your partner you care, get to know them better, and defuse petty arguments.

Below, find seven strategies for strengthening your relationship, none of which take more than 10 minutes.

SEE ALSO: The most insidious type of cheating isn't physical. Here are 9 signs your partner could be guilty.

Try 'mindful conversation.'

"Mindful conversation" isn't designed to help romantic couples, per se — but it's a useful exercise in learning to actually listen to what your partner is saying, instead of tuning out or waiting for your chance to jump in.

Here's how it works (one of you can be "A" and the other can be "B"):

1. A talks and B listens for a set time period (say, three minutes)

2. B responds with, "What I heard you say is …"

3. A gives feedback and B responds until A is satisfied.

4. A and B switch roles.

It might be awkward at first, but it gets easier over time.

Hug or kiss your partner.

Happiness expert Gretchen Rubin previously told Business Insider that she and her family make a habit of practicing "warm greetings and farewells." Every time someone comes or goes, everyone gives a sincere hello or goodbye.

Research even suggests that physical affection is related to greater satisfaction in romantic relationships. So take a minute or two to show your partner how much you care about them.

Say 'thank you' for something small.

In "The Gratitude Diaries," journalist Janice Kaplan chronicles her yearlong experiment with being more grateful for everything and everyone in her life — including her husband.

She writes that thanking her husband for something as small as fixing a leaky faucet ended up improving her overall marriage.

As Business Insider's Erin Brodwin has reported, psychologists have known for a while that couples who express gratitude toward each other are more likely to stay together. In fact, thanking your partner even once can bring you two closer months later.

That's possibly because a single act of gratitude sparks a cycle of gratitude and generosity: You thank your partner, so your partner feels appreciated and invests more in the relationship, which in turn makes you feel more grateful to them.

Reassess the division of household chores.

On the "Best of Both Worlds" podcast, time-management expert Laura Vanderkam and physician Sarah Hart-Unger recommend a simple strategy to relieve some of the stress from your relationship.

There are two steps:

1. Each person writes down all the family responsibilities they're currently taking care of.

2. Each person shares which of those responsibilities they enjoy, and which they don't.

The point is to figure out how much of the burden you're really shouldering, and to figure out if you can "swap" some chores so everyone's doing the things they enjoy.

Try the 'just like me' exercise.

That's a tip from Chade-Meng Tan, a former Google engineer and the creator of the "Search Inside Yourself" emotional-intelligence course.

In his 2012 book, also called "Search Inside Yourself," Tan explains how he handles conflict with his wife:

"I visualize the other person in the next room. I remind myself that this person is just like me, wants to be free from suffering just like me, wants to be happy just like me, and so on. And then I wish that person wellness, happiness, freedom from suffering, and so on.

"After just a few minutes of doing this, I feel much better about myself, about the other person, and about the whole situation. A large part of my anger dissipates immediately."

Practice the '10-minute rule.'

The 10-minute rule is a suggestion from sociology professor and relationship expert Terri Orbuch.

As Orbuch describes it in her book "5 Simple Steps to Take Your Marriage from Good to Great," the rule is a "daily briefing in which you and your spouse make time to talk about anything under the sun — except kids, works, and household tasks or responsibilities."

For example, you might want to ask:

• Do you think you are/were closer to your mom or dad? Why?

• What age do you feel like inside? Why?

• What do you think are the top-three worst songs of all time?

• What is the one thing you want to be remembered for?

According to Orbuch, learning new information about your partner makes things feel fresh and new again, and "mimics the emotional and physical state you were in during the first few years of your marriage."

Learn something new about your partner.

In his 2014 book, "Mindwise," psychologist Nicholas Epley cites research suggesting that we think we know our partners a lot better than we actually do. (Epley had a personal experience in which his wife bought him his least favorite ice cream flavor, thinking he'd love it.)

So Epley puts forth a simple solution: Don't assume you know everything about your partner. Ask questions and listen to the answers.

A new lawsuit says Jeffrey Epstein trafficked and sexually abused dozens of young girls on one of his private islands in the Caribbean. Here's an inside look at the islands.

jeffrey epstein private island 2x1

Convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein had an expensive real-estate portfolio that included two neighboring private islands.

In 1998, Epstein bought Little St. James, a 72-acre private island in the US Virgin Islands, for $ 7.95 million. The island was dubbed "Pedophile Island" and "Orgy Island" by locals, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Next to Little St. James sits Epstein's second private island, Great St. James. Epstein purchased the second island in 2016 for a reported $18 million.

According to New York Magazine, Epstein planned to build a compound on Great St. James but was issued a stop-work order in December for not obeying environmental regulations.

On August 12, 2019, just days after Epstein died by suicide in a Manhattan jail cell — where he was being held on charges of sex trafficking and conspiracy to commit sex trafficking— the FBI raided Little St. James to search for evidence pertaining to the case against him.

Then, on January 15, 2020, Virgin Islands Attorney General Denise George filed a lawsuit alleging that Epstein and his associates lured girls and young women to the island, where they were forced into sexual servitude and prevented from leaving.

To the public's knowledge, Epstein owned four other luxury residential properties: a mansion in Manhattan, an estate in Palm Beach, Florida, a ranch in New Mexico, and an apartment in Paris.

Epstein's seven-story mansion on East 71st Street was valued at $77 million in a recent court document. However, the New York City Department of Finance valued the home closer to $56 million earlier in 2019. In Florida, his Palm Beach estate, which he purchased in 1990, is estimated to be worth over $12 million.

In New Mexico, Epstein owned a 7,500-acre ranch that was appraised at over $18 million in 2013.

He also owned an apartment in Paris on the famous Avenue Foch. However, very little information on the apartment is available to the public.

His real estate portfolio has played a major role in the sexual-abuse allegations against him.

On August 12, 2019, just two days after Epstein was found dead in a Manhattan jail cell, the FBI raided the island, according to the Miami Herald.

Then, on January 15, 2020, Virgin Islands Attorney General Denise George filed a lawsuit alleging that, as recently as 2018, Epstein and his associates took girls and young women to Little St. James and forced them into sexual servitude and forced labor.

Everlane has a $98 women's flat made of recycled plastic bottles — it might be the most comfortable pair we've ever tried

everlane day glove reknit 3

  • The Day Glove ReKnit ($98) from retail darling Everlane are as comfortable as — dare we say, perhaps even more comfortable than — the brand's bestseller, the leather Day Glove ($115).
  • The knitted flats are a serious contender for our favorite flat. They're lightweight and breathable, have a supportive, cushioned leather insole, and cost under $100.
  • Six months after our initial test, we remain fans of the flats for their reliability and consistency.
  • Their fabric is made from nine recycled plastic bottles, putting it in competition against other sustainable and comfortable shoes like Rothy's flats and Allbirds' flats

A bestselling women's item at Everlane, a simple leather flat known as the Day Glove, sits on an impossibly high pedestal. Among its accolades at Insider Picks: the most comfortable Everlane shoe, the best women's flat you can buy, and one of the best products, period, that we tried in 2018

To reach the upper echelons of Picks fame is of course not without cause. These flats are ultra-soft and flexible, with tiny air vents for breathability and a convenient back pull tab. They now come in 13 colors, and as I write this, I'm seriously considering getting a second pair in a cool slate blue.

everlane day glove reknit

Just as we were considering penning another love letter to these fan club-worthy flats, a new generation of Day Gloves arrived in August 2019 to delight us.

They're called the Day Glove ReKnit, retailing at $98 and made from nine renewed plastic bottles, and they're as amazing as the original Day Glove.

Their lightweight and breathable knit uppers, which have a ribbed pattern that reminds us of our favorite summer cardigans, are combined with cushioned leather insoles that let you walk in the shoes for hours on end. Like Everlane's other popular Day styles, including the Day Loafer and classic Day Heel, they have a back-side pull tab.

everlane day glove reknit 4

As much as the Day Glove ReKnits belong to the Day shoe family ethos of comfort, versatility, and style, they're also part of Everlane's story of sustainable production practices. By 2021, the company is hoping to eliminate new plastic from its entire supply chain. Its ReNew outerwear collection was the first step towards that mission, and its first sneaker, the Tread Trainer, also takes care to use recycled plastic whenever possible.

With their recycled plastic bottle construction, we can't help but think of the brand that first started making knit flats from innovative materials in 2016, Rothy's (so we compared them side by side). Another online shoe startup, Allbirds, also recently joined the intensifying competition with its own iteration, the eucalyptus-fiber Tree Breezer flats.

The coolest part of it all is that you wouldn't suspect a thing. The ReKnits look and feel not just like a regular pair of flats, but an elevated style you'll reach for automatically every morning, so it's impressive they're also made from environmentally friendly materials. Since they're light and slim, they'll pack easily for travels, and their classic silhouette makes them appropriate for both casual and more formal occasions.

Read on for our individual thoughts of the Day Glove ReKnit flats, including a six-month wear update:

everlane day glove reknit 2

Sally Kaplan, Insider Picks editor:

When we first put on these flats, pretty much all of us thought aloud, "Oh no, we're going to have to update every article that names the leather versions of these as the best flat ever!" I think there's a complete consensus on our team that these are some of the most comfortable flats we've ever worn. I have two pairs of the leather Day Gloves and they're definitely my most-worn shoes in my closet, but I'd say the knit version is just slightly less restrictive. There's also no break-in time like there is with leather (even though it's buttery soft and molds easily). The knit material is just stretchy and flexible enough to form to your foot and move with you through the day, and though there's not much arch support, the insoles are soft enough to wear all day.

I got the white pair thinking they'd be easy to spot clean, but I'll be honest — I think they're going to get dirty very quickly. I'll report back once I've had enough time to get them scuffed up, and in the meantime, I'll be hawk-eyeing the website for a nude or light grey pair that won't get dirty as easily!

January 2020 update: I've been wearing my knit Day Gloves just as often as my leather pair over the past six months, and I have to say that these continue to be even more comfortable than I thought possible. Despite having very little padding, they've held up really well with consistent wear. And though the white pair does pick up a lot of dirt from city streets, I've been able to spot clean the tip of the toes pretty easily.

Remi Rosmarin, Insider Picks reporter:

You know that feeling after a long day of walking when you pull off your shoes and feel a sigh of relief as you let your feet finally breathe? That's the feeling I got when I took off my other shoes to slip this pair on. They're so strikingly lightweight, it feels like you're barely wearing anything. The ribbed knit strikes a good balance between being structured and soft. Little details like the leather tab on the back and a hard rubber sole make these feel a little more chic than your average knit flats. The only reason I won't wear these every day is because I got them in white, and I don't want to let the New York City streets ruin them that fast.

January 2020 update: I wish I had worn these more than I have because they really are so comfortable. The round-toe ballet flat just isn't a style I usually lean towards and thus, the ReKnit Day Glove hasn't become a staple in my wardrobe. On top of that, as someone who lives in a big city where the streets are not known for being particularly clean, the white knit and low profile of this shoe isn't really practical for my day-to-day. Maybe when I'm visiting my family in suburbia or spending a spring day out of the city I'll give these another try.

everlane day glove reknit 5

Connie Chen, Insider Picks senior reporter:

Whenever I try an amazing product, I always worry that the next version or style will fall flat. All good things must come to an end, right? In a rare twist, the new ReKnit flats lived up to my original Day Glove-ridden expectations. Part of the reason is they have the same comfortable and supportive leather insole that makes them wearable right out of the box. The ribbed knit fabric is really cute and adds some texture contrast to any outfit, and it shines in the brighter color options — the red (which I tried) and the yellow. I'm a little too excited to have a new shoe to rave about to my friends.

Do yourself and your feet a favor by getting the new Day Glove ReKnit flats. Whether you're already a Day Glove devotee or considering your first Everlane shoe purchase, you won't regret getting these comfortable under-$100 flats.

January 2020 update: Now that some time has gone by, I've realized I ultimately prefer the original Day Gloves because they mold better to my feet (which makes sense given I've worn them for longer). That said, I still wear the ReKnit flats often, and I do think they're more visually appealing and feel a little more durable due to their knit construction. With knit-fabric shoes, the prevailing concern is that they'll eventually lose their shape, but my ReKnit flats continue to look neat and structured.

everlane day glove reknit 10

Ellen Hoffman, Insider Picks director of content strategy:

Everlane does it again! I hate to sound like a broken record, but the company really does make some of my favorite clothes and shoes, and the new Day Glove ReKnit has shot right to the top as my favorite shoe it has made to date (I've tried almost every major shoe style Everlane has launched in the last four years, for what it's worth).

There's absolutely no break-in time needed for the ReKnits, which surprised me since Everlane shoes typically take me a few wears to break in. I packed my work bag with back-up flats to change into in case they started irritating my feet after a few hours, but I needn't have bothered. They're up there with the Allbirds Tree Breezers as the most comfortable and breathable knit flats I own, though I think the ReKnits offer a more fashion-forward look. It remains to be seen how well the flexible knit upper maintains its shape over time, but as far as first impressions go, the ReKnits nailed it.

The best dog boots

  • Dogs boots can protect your pup's paws from the elements and provide extra traction.
  • Winter weather, especially, brings snow and rock salt that can lead to dry and cracked paw pads.
  • If you're in the market for a durable pair of dog boots to protect your dog's paws, our top pick is Ultra Paws Durable Dog Boots.

The pads of your dog's feet are much tougher than your own — tough enough for them to run around on rough terrain without discomfort. There are, however, times when your pup's pads could use a little extra protection so they don't develop dry or cracked paw pads.

In the winter, a nice set of dog boots will keep your dog's paws dry and safe from corrosive substances like ice melt and rock salt. In the fall, boots will keep your pup's feet clean on muddy walks. Plus, it never hurts to keep a set of all-purpose booties on hand in addition to a warm dog coat.

Dog boots come in many shapes, colors, and materials, so it can be difficult to choose just one pair unless you know exactly what you're looking for. That's where we come in. We did the research to find the best dog boots in several categories so you can choose the right pair for your needs, no matter the season.

Here are the best dog boots you can buy:

The best dog boots overall

For indoor and outdoor use in all environments, the Ultra Paws Durable Dog Boots are the best you can buy.

If you're looking for a good pair of all-purpose dog boots for your pup, you'll want something that is durable and comfortable for everyday use. A good pair of everyday dog boots will be easy to put on and take off while offering a snug fit. The boots should also be flexible and good for all types of weather. Our top pick for the best dog booties overall is Ultra Paws Durable Dog Boots.

Made from high-quality and recycled materials, these Ultra Paws Durable Dog Boots are a smart buy. With a wide split seam at the top, the boots are easy to put on and take off your dog's feet, but Velcro straps can be tightened to ensure a snug yet comfortable fit. They're water-resistant and offer good traction on a variety of surfaces, indoors and out. You can get the dog boots in a wide range of sizes, but you only get two color options: red and black.

The Dog Clinic says that the Velcro closure ensures a snug fit even when the dog runs through snow, mud, and other rough terrain. Rover names these boots one of its top picks for snow and Canine Journal comments that they are also good for senior dogs and clumsy puppies who need more traction on slippery indoor surfaces.

Some users note that the boots run small, however, and they may irritate dogs who still have their dew claws.

Pros: Made from high-quality materials for durability, Velcro closure for snug fit, water-resistant protection, traction for indoor and outdoor surfaces, easy to put on/take off, stay on through all kinds of activity, available in many sizes, made from recycled materials

Cons: Sizes may run a little small, may cause irritation in dogs with dew claws, can be tricky to find the right fit, may need to order in two pairs for fit

The best dog boots for winter

The Muttluks Fleece-Lined Dog Boots offer excellent comfort and traction in cold winter conditions, water-resistance, and a breathable leather sole.

During the winter, there are many things that can affect your dog's paws. From cold, wet snow to corrosive materials like rock salt and ice melt, your dog needs a nice set of winter booties to keep his feet warm and dry. We like the Muttluks Fleece-Lined Dog Boots because they are stylish, affordable, and get the job done.

Made from high-quality materials with a soft fleece lining, these Muttluks Fleece-Lined Dog Boots will keep your dog's feet warm and dry throughout the entire winter. The boots have a sleek, attractive design with a breathable leather sole that offers comfort as well as traction in wet conditions. Each boot also comes with a self-tightening strap to ensure a secure fit as well as a reflective strip for nighttime visibility and safety.

Wirecutter says the mitten-shaped design offers a flexible fit with a stretchy leg cuff to prevent slippage. The Whole Dog Journal calls these boost as the "absolute best dog boots you can buy," noting that they come in eight different sizes and are made from soft, flexible materials to ensure comfort and a uniform distribution of pressure around the ankle.

The Muttluks Fleece-Lined Dog Boots are a favorite among dog owners. Users love the quality construction and attractive design, though some have found they are not completely waterproof and dogs with dewclaws may experience minor irritation with extended wear.

Pros: High-quality materials, fleece lining for warmth, breathable leather sole, self-tightening strap for a secure fit, reflective strips for visibility, water-resistant protection for snow, attractive design

Cons: Dogs with dew claws may experience irritation, not completely waterproof, more expensive than some models, may be slippery on hardwood floors

The best water resistant dog boots

The My Busy Dog Water-Resistant Dog Boots have a water-resistant construction, secure fit, and a more affordable price tag than many top-rated picks.

Whether you're taking your dog out in the snow or going for a walk on a rainy day, a pair of high-quality, water-resistant dog boots is a must. Only dog boots made from rubber or silicone offer complete waterproof protection, but these boots don't come with the benefit of adjustable sizing and other features. Our top pick for the best water-resistant dog boots that are also comfortable, durable, and easy to use is the My Busy Dog Water-Resistant Dog Boot.

Made from high-quality materials with a rugged anti-slip sole, these My Busy Dog Water-Resistant Dog Boots offer long-lasting durability as well as comfort. These boots feature a wide split seam for easy on and off as well as adjustable Velcro straps for a snug, adjustable fit.

The water-resistant materials keep your dog's feet warm and raw while also improving traction and mobility indoors and out. Additionally, these boots are much more affordable than some of the other top-rated dog boots on the market.

K9 of Mine includes these dog boots in its top-five list of the best dog boots, praising their durability in conditions hot, cold, wet, or dry. The American Kennel Club (AKC) also gives these boots an excellent review.

Some dogs may have trouble with the fit, especially those with dew claws.

Pros: Made from high-quality materials, rugged anti-slip soles, water-resistant materials, provides traction for all terrain, wide split seam for easy on/off, reflective Velcro strips for visibility

Cons: May not be waterproof for extended submersion, some dogs may have trouble with fit, dogs with dew claws may experience irritation

The best dog boots for hiking

The Ruffwear Grip Trex All-Terrain Boots are durable, offer excellent traction, and work perfectly for adventurous dogs.

When it comes to choosing the best dog booties for hiking, there are several factors to consider. First and foremost, you want a snug fit to ensure comfort and to prevent rubbing that might cause blisters. You also want a tough, durable material that is still lightweight and breathable. Finally, look for a boot that offers good traction and water resistance. The Ruffwear Grip Trex All-Terrain Boots have all these features and more, making them a great buy.

The Ruffwear Grip Trex All-Terrain Boots offer a snug and secure fit along with excellent traction and flexibility for all kinds of terrain. With a non-marking Vibram outsole for rugged resilience and a breathable mesh fabric, these boots will keep your dog comfortable all day long while delivering unmatched protection against wet and weather. The gusset design makes them easy to take on and off your dog's feet, while the hook-and-loop closure ensures a simple yet secure fit.

Best Reviews and Here Pup both recommend the dog boots. Here Pup comments on the fact that the strong sole offers the level of protection needed for a long hike while also being gentle on indoor flooring. They may not be completely waterproof, but they offer a variety of benefits including reflective strips for visibility, different sizes for front and back paws, and an adjustable strap closure.

Users love the quality and protection these boots offer, though there are some comments that the sizes run a little large.

Pros: Highly durable, made from quality materials, tough on all terrain, simple yet secure hook-and-loop closure, breathable mesh, non-marking sole, excellent traction, several sizes and colors, reflective trim

Cons: Sizes may run a little large, may not fit as snugly on short-haired dogs, dogs with dew claws may experience irritation

The best disposable dog boots

The Pawz Waterproof Dog Boots are lightweight and reusable, but fully biodegradable when you're ready to dispose of them.

The best dog booties can be quite expensive, and if you really only need something for occasional use, it can be hard to justify the cost. If you're looking for a decent set of booties that will improve traction and protect against harmful substances without breaking the bank, we recommend the Pawz Waterproof Dog Boots. Not only are they affordable, but they are safely disposable as well.

Pawz Waterproof Dog Boots come in a package of twelve booties, each of which can be used at least three times. These boots are made from lightweight rubber materials that improve traction in wet conditions and completely protect your dog's paws from harmful materials like rock salt, ice melt, pesticide, and more. They are also a great option for dogs who have environmental allergies to grass, weeds, and dust. Best of all, they are affordable and disposable.

Heavy describes Pawz Waterproof Dog Boots as "rubber socks" that are intended to be used a few times and then discarded. Top Dog Tips says that many dogs who have trouble tolerating boots do fine with these.

Dog owners love the low price and the snug fit, though the boots may tear after a while.

Pros: Affordable price, comes in a multi-pack, lightweight rubber material, protects against harmful substances, improves traction, biodegradable materials, multiple color options

Cons: Not designed for long-term use, may tear with repeated use, not adjustable for fit

5 ways to look and feel healthier in one week, according to a nutritionist — and 5 things you should never do

spinach sprouts avocado woman eating healthy salad

  • A dietitian and nutritionist, Andy Bellatti, has five pieces of advice to start feeling like your best self and to get on the right track toward losing weight (safely!) in just one week.
  • To curb bloating, dehydration, and discomfort, drink lots of water, cut sodium, and down fiber.
  • Don't resort to a juice cleanse, powders, or pills. Those aren't healthy or sustainable ways to keep the weight off.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

As we head into the middle of January, it's time to push through your New Year's resolutions and become your healthiest, most fit self.

But what's the best way to start?

A registered dietitian and nutritionist named Andy Bellatti reveals all the things you should — and should never — do to get you feeling your best in under a week and on the right track.

DO: Drink lots of water.

Water is essential — it regulates the shape of every cell inside our bodies. If we don't get enough, in fact, these cells begin to shrivel up. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends choosing water instead of sugar-sweetened beverages to "help with weight management."

Swapping in a cold glass of H2O for a single 20-ounce soda will save you about 240 calories.

So hydrate, Bellatti told Business Insider, "ideally with water."

DON'T: Go on a juice cleanse.

If you're considering a "detox" or "juice cleanse," you might want to reconsider. Only drinking water, juice, or any other liquefied concoction for more than a few days can set you up for unhealthy eating behaviors or lead to spikes and drops in blood-sugar levels, which can spawn cravings and mood swings.

"This is a recipe for 'hangriness,'" Bellatti said, "that also inaccurately paints all solid food as problematic."

DO: Cut back on sodium.

Most of us — 9 out of 10 of US adults, according to the American Heart Association— eat too much sodium, and that's not including any salt added at the table. Too much salt in your diet can cause puffiness and bloating, so cutting back can help you avoid that.

"Sodium retains water," Bellatti said, "so lowering sodium intake also reduces puffiness."

DON'T: Start banning foods.

There's a difference between cutting back on things you eat in excess and banning entire food groups.

Diets that rely on avoiding ingredients (like sugar or gluten) can lead to replacing those things with other ingredients that play the same role in the body (like honey or corn-based foods). Doing this can be dangerous if the replacement products are nutrient-deficient.

DO: Fill up with fiber.

The writer Michael Pollan said it best: "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants."

Fresh, high-fiber vegetables like broccoli, bell peppers, and Brussels sprouts — which the CDC calls "powerhouse foods"— are great sources of key vitamins and nutrients, including fiber, which helps keep you feeling full and satisfied until your next meal.

"Whole, plant-based foods (fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, and seeds) are best," Bellatti said. "One quick way to add extra fiber to your day: Sprinkle chia, hemp, or ground flax over whatever you're eating for a boost."

DON'T: Rely on powders and pills.

The problem with diet powders and pills, Bellatti said, is that they often take something that was once a whole food, like a fruit or a vegetable, and process it to separate out one ingredient. That's all right for things like cocoa powder, which does have nutrients, but it shouldn't make up the bulk of your dietary intake.

"When something is a powder, you're probably using what, a teaspoon or tablespoon at most?" Bellatti said. "And you have to wonder how much that can really do. Versus a cup of broccoli or a quarter cup of cashews. That's something significant."

DO: Be mindful of portion sizes.

The baseline portion sizes of our snacks and meals have ballooned over the past 40 years — even the plates and cups we serve them on have gotten noticeably bigger.

The portion sizes of many of our foods — whether fast food, sit-down meals, or even items from the grocery store — on average have grown by as much as 138% since the 1970s, according to data from the Journal of Nutrition, and the Journal of the American Medical Association.

So be mindful of portion sizes, and if you're eating out, consider taking some of your meal home for later.

DON'T: Focus exclusively on calories.

Focusing too much on calories can be dangerous, too, since the measurement falsely makes it seem as if a calorie of one food is the same as that of another.

"This is especially true when eating at restaurants," Bellatti said. "Many low-calorie items are loaded with sodium, which retains water and can leave you feeling bloated."

Plus, keep in mind that for sustained weight loss, you're supposed to lose only about 1 to 3 pounds a week.

"That tends to be a lot more sustainable than losing a whole bunch at once," Philip Stanforth, a professor of exercise science at the University of Texas, told Business Insider.

DO: Think positive.

Thinking positively about eating and feeling better can help motivate some people to stick to a new lifestyle.

"In terms of changing the way you eat (it's much more than a 'diet'), focus on the opportunities and what you can eat as opposed to what foods you're trying to cut down on," Dr. Donald Hensrud, who chairs the Mayo Clinic's division of preventive, occupational, and aerospace medicine, wrote in a blog post for Mayo Clinic. "There are many wonderful foods and recipes to explore, and believe it or not, we can learn to like new foods."

DON'T: Expect miracles.

Let's be real: Eating right for a week won't counteract decades of subsisting on fries and Frappuccinos. But it is enough to reduce some of the more irritating aspects of those symptoms, like the bloating linked with a high-salt diet or the fatigue associated with blood-sugar crashes.

"The most that can happen in a week's time is that you make choices that help reduce bloating and puffiness," Bellatti said. "Any promises beyond that are more about marketing and hyperbole than anything else."

But committing to treating your body well — even if only for a few days — might be enough to lay the foundation for months or years of future healthy eating. If you can prove to yourself that you can treat your body right (and that it feels good to do so), you just might be more likely to keep it up later on.

I found an Oxford dress shirt for cold weather that keeps my underarms cool and dry at work — here's how it stops sweat stains

$

Mack Weldon 37.5 Oxford

  • Mack Weldon's new 37.5 Oxford looks just like a classic Oxford shirt, but it's designed to keep your body temperature cool and comfortable.
  • It does this by absorbing sweat vapors before they turn to liquid, which means you stay drier than you would in a classic cotton Oxford.
  • I put the shirt to the test and found it to be far better technology than moisture-wicking materials that only try to make you comfortable after you've already begun sweating.
  • Priced at $88, the Mack Weldon 37.5 Oxford is a worthwhile purchase for guys who value staying cool and comfortable throughout the entire day.

I once had a high school Spanish teacher who went through a whole day with a pair of underwear clinging on to the back of her shirt, presumably by static electricity formed while doing laundry. In true teenage fashion, not a single student said a word and she spent all of fifth period trying to figure out what was so funny every time she turned her back to write on the whiteboard.

I can't think of another workplace wardrobe mishap that could possibly be as embarrassing as that, but if I had to pick a runner up, walking around the office with egregious sweat stains would be it. Nobody wants to walk into a midday meeting with huge wet armpit stains and a sweaty back as if they just competed in an Ironman Triathalon, but plenty of guys go through that daily.

Fortunately, innovative menswear brand Mack Weldon is offering up a clever way of staying cool and sweat-free at work — the 37.5 Oxford.

What is 37.5 Technology?

The 37.5 Oxford is made from 60% cotton and 40% 37.5 Polyester. In 1992, photo-physical chemist and inventor Dr. Gregory Haggquist was visiting Japan for his postdoctoral fellowship when he conceived 37.5 Technology. The idea came about after taking a volcanic sand bath on Mt. Aso.

Initially, Dr. Haggquist thought that being buried in volcanic sand would be incredibly hot and uncomfortable, but he quickly realized that the sand removed sweat vapor from his skin before it turned to liquid sweat, thus keeping him comfortable and dry. He applied the same concept of sweat absorption and temperature regulation to clothing to create 37.5 Polyester.

What separates the Mack Weldon 37.5 Oxford from other performance materials is that it doesn't wick sweat away, it absorbs it as vapor before it has a chance to form into a liquid.

Specs and sizing

The 37.5 Oxford comes in standard alpha sizes (small through extra-extra-large) and it isn't particularly stretchy, similar to a classic Oxford weave. The shirt features a classic fit, an ideal length for wearing tucked or untucked, and underarm sweat guards for extra protection against sweat marks. I personally prefer to wear my shirt untucked, but the fact that it was designed with both styling opportunities in mind was a clear indication that Mack Weldon paid close attention to detail.

Mack Weldon 37.5 Oxford

My experience with the 37.5 Oxford shirt

I've had positive experiences with Mack Weldon's underwear and AIRKNITx workout gear, so I was excited to try the brand's first crack at the essential workwear button-up shirt.

To put the 37.5 Oxford to the test, I wore it in 70° degree weather, which is relatively warm for mid-October.

Between hustling to make it on my NJ Transit train and switching to the always-packed PATH train, I usually work up a small sweat, but I remained comfortable and dry in the Mack Weldon 37.5 Oxford. Throughout the day, I found that my body-heat didn't feel trapped against me; I didn't feel that sensation of being baked inside a shirt.

Instead of wearing a T-shirt underneath, which usually helps prevent armpit sweat stains, I wore a normal tank top undershirt. Surprisingly, I didn't feel the least bit sweaty or clammy and my shirt stayed dry in the underarm areas.

What I like best about the Mack Weldon 37.5 Oxford is that despite its performance, it's very unassuming in its appearance. It looks and feels like a traditional cotton Oxford shirt; it's soft against the skin, has a decent weight, and stands up to wrinkles far better than linen or a thinner cotton shirt. I haven't washed it yet, but Mack Weldon claims that it will get softer with each wash.

Mack Weldon 37.5 Oxford

The bottom line

Although the Mack Weldon 37.5 Oxford isn't a magical shirt with a built-in air conditioner, it does an exceptional job of keeping your body at a comfortable temperature. Compared to moisture-wicking materials that try to keep you comfortable after you've sweated, the 37.5 Oxfordprevented me from sweating in the first place.

At $88, it's not the most budget-friendly dress shirt option, but if you value looking good and feeling good all day long, then it's worth the money.

BarkBox is arguably the most popular pet subscription box — I tried it and can see why dogs and their owners love it

Archie Bark Box 1

  • BarkBox is a subscription box filled with dog toys and treats. Since 2012, the popular boxes have been shipped to more than 2 million dogs.
  • Prices range from $22 to $29 per month, and each box includes exclusive toys, all-natural treats, and a chew — all curated around specific themes like Snowbound Hounds and Chewrassic Park.
  • From now through January 20, BarkBox will double the offerings in your first box when you sign up for a 6- or 12-month plan. New subscribers to their Super Chewer Box will get a free toy and treats with 6- or 12-month plans.
  • I tested it with my dog Archie who will chew on or play with just about anything, so I'm not surprised he loved the BarkBox toys so much. I'm pleased with their quality and durability.

From groceries and prepared meals to clothing and beauty products, there is a monthly subscription service for everything— including dog toys.

When it comes to monthly pet product subscriptions, there are several options to choose from. There are Petco's PupBox, Bullymake, and RescueBox for dogs, and boxes for our feline friends from Cat Lady Box and KitNipBox, to name a few. Add to that fresh food delivery services like The Farmer's Dog, NomNomNow, PetPlate, and Ollie.

And then there is arguably the most popular: BarkBox. Since its inception, it's delivered boxes to more than 2 million dogs and partnered with stores like Target to bring their most popular toys to nonsubscribers.

I decided to test the service with my dog Archie who loves to play with and chew on almost everything.

How does BarkBox work?

Archie Bark Box 2

To keep it simple, BarkBox sends you a box of toys, treats, and accessories once a month.

Not only does BarkBox offer monthly deliveries of toys and treats, but each box has a unique theme. One month your dog might receive a collection of holiday-themed treats and toys while the next month his BarkBox might send him on a journey through Chewrassic Bark. Each box contains two innovative toys, two bags of all-natural treats, a chew, and a specially curated item from the month's themed collection.

Every toy is designed by in-house industrial designers, made for the way dogs play and approved by the company's own test dogs.

To sign up, all you have to do is create an online profile, answering questions about your dog's size and dietary preferences. You can also choose from the standard BarkBox filled with plush toys or the Super Chewer Box filled with fluff-free tough toys.

From there, you can choose a one-month subscription ($29), six months ($25/box), or 12 months ($22/box). The entire subscription process takes less than five minutes.

Testing the BarkBox

To write my review, Archie and I received two BarkBoxes with assorted toys, treats, and chews from the Bark Slope Street Fair collection. Here's what we received:

  • Fresh Fair Treats, Lamb Gyro Recipe
  • Fresh Fair Treats, Duck Shish Kabob Recipe
  • Fresh Fair Treats, Chicken & Fish Taco Recipe
  • New York City Central Pork Pizza Treats
  • Plato Pet Treats Thinkers Chew, Salmon Recipe (2)
  • Max's Maine Lobster Roll (Plush Toy)
  • Gideon the Pigeon (Plush Toy)
  • Bebe the Burrito (Plush Toy)
  • Lickton Iced Tea (Spiky Core Toy)
  • Shuck n' Chuck Corn Cob (Super Chewer Toy)
  • The All-Powerful Pupsicle (Super Chewer Toy)
  • Buns of Steel Hotdog (Super Chewer Toy)

Archie Bark Box 4

From the moment I started opening the BarkBox, Archie was intrigued — the noise of the packing paper alone sent him into an excited frenzy. The first thing I grabbed out of the box was Max's Main Lobster Roll, one of the plush toys. I gave the toy a good squeeze and Archie's ears perked up and his head tilted to the side.

I waved the toy around a couple of times then offered it to him. He immediately grabbed it out of my hand, ran down the hall into the bedroom, and started chewing.

Archie loves a good plush toy, especially if there's a squeaker involved. But what he really loved about Max's Maine Lobster Roll was the crinkle noise it made. Several other toys in the collection made similar noises, and he seemed to prefer them above the hard Super Chewer toys. He gobbled up the treats (which was a little surprising since he's been picky about treats in the past) and he made quick work of the chews as well.

I'm now writing this several weeks after receiving Archie's BarkBox.

My bedroom floor is currently covered in tufts of stuffing ripped out of several plush toys I'd received as gifts. Archie's beloved stuffed lamb and puppy are no more, but his BarkBox plush toys are still around (though he did manage to get the squeaker out of Gideon the Pigeon and chewed that to shreds).

Needless to say, I think he's a fan of BarkBox and so am I.

What's the verdict?

Archie will chew on or play with just about anything, so I'm not surprised he loved the BarkBox so much. I am, however, pleased with the quality and durability of the toys. Even the plush toys from the regular BarkBox stood up well, and I'm convinced the Super Chewer toys will last forever.

Archie loves chews, so those are long gone already. I'm not sure that I need two bags of treats every month, though.

One final thing I found interesting is that BarkBox is very allergy-friendly. Every BarkBox is free from corn, wheat, and soy, which greatly reduces the risk for triggering allergies and food sensitivities. There are also options for dogs that are allergic to chicken, beef, and turkey — you simply have to call BarkBox or use their live chat feature, and they'll send you an allergy-friendly box.

To wrap up, here's an overview of the pros and cons for BarkBox:

Pros for the BarkBox subscription

  • Everything is of the highest quality, including all-natural dog treats and innovative toys.
  • Each box is tailored to fit your dog's size, and options are available for dogs with allergies.
  • You can reorder certain items or purchase items from other collections online.
  • There is a money-back guarantee if your dog doesn't like every item in the box.
  • BarkBox donates 5% of their profits go toward supporting organizations that provide free or low-cost vet care through spay and neuter programs.
  • Discounted prices are available for buying multiple months and for multiple dogs.

Cons for the BarkBox subscription

  • Subscription automatically renews; you'll be charged and sent another box if you don't cancel.
  • Some of the plush toys may not be ideal for heavy chewers and the stuffing could be a choking hazard — there is also access to the squeaker inside if your dog rips open the toy.
  • The rubberized toys that come in the Super Chewer box are heavy and somewhat awkward.

All in all, I was very pleased with my BarkBox experience and I think it's safe to say that Archie is too.

Interior design startup Modsy uses 3D models to let you see furniture in your space before you buy it — here's how it helped me make the most of my small apartment

ModsyRender2_preview

  • Modsy is a service that makes 3D models of the rooms you want to decorate based on pictures you send and its basic dimensions.
  • The company's interior designers will create two versions of the room, decorated with furniture from popular home stores that you can actually buy through Modsy, and which match your tastes and budget specifically.
  • For as low as $49 (but typically $199), you'll get two draft designs of your space, plus two updates from your designer and communication with them via email.
  • For $129 (typically $299), you'll get more features, like one-on-one time with a designer via email or phone and unlimited rounds of updates to your two original drafts.
  • I've used Modsy for my last two apartments, and I recommend it to anyone who can comfortably afford the service. You can see what my bedroom redesign process was like with Modsy.
  • Read more: 8 companies that offer free or inexpensive interior design services

If you've ever bought a piece of furniture online and realized only after the setup that it either didn't fit the space physically or aesthetically, you can already name at least one time when you would have benefited from a service like Modsy.

Modsy is an online company that lets you upload photos and dimensions of any room and then creates a 3D model, complete with recommendations from an interior designer on how to fill it using furniture from popular home-decor and furniture stores. If you've already got a nightstand or bed frame, you can pay $15 and Modsy will make a 3D model of it as well, so you truly never have to wonder about what something will look like once put together. You also don't need to crawl around your house with a tape measurer.

The furniture the Modsy designers use is all chosen to fit your preferences. If you're not sure if you like "traditional" or "urban" design, as I wasn't, or if your style has changed over the years, as mine had, there's a quiz you can take to help identify what you like.

Once you get your designs, you can then buy anything from your model at a discount through Modsy, which matches the lowest advertised price on the day you place your order, including any applicable sales and promotions. So, you could save on top of sales at other retailers and potentially pay for the service itself with the discount.

There are four pricing options, with most shoppers probably deciding between the first three. The Luxe option will be the closest resemblance to traditionally hiring an interior designer for your home.

My experience with Modsy

I've used Modsy twice — once immediately after college, and again for the apartment I moved into immediately after that one. In my experience, the value is definitely worth the price. The 3D designs are extremely helpful and also allow me to be more creative with my space.

The first time I used Modsy, I was moving to a new place after college and wanted to take furniture shopping more seriously, but didn't have a natural gift for interior design. I could appreciate when things looked put-together, and I knew what I liked, but being on the other side of things is never easy, particularly with the visualization (which Modsy takes care of for me). Not being able to imagine all of the furniture, light fixtures, and rugs together also had me buying more basic furniture simply so that I would know it would go together. Modsy allowed me more freedom and creativity.

The second time around, it helped me find a way to blend my past taste (mid-century modern) and furniture with my new taste (eclectic). It also helped me become better at visualizing the possibilities elsewhere in my home, even without using Modsy again on those areas.

In terms of price, I find the unlimited drafts with a designer help justify the higher price of the premium option. If you're indecisive, it's probably worth splurging. If you're only looking for a few tweaks, you can get by with the cheaper tier.

Even if you can't afford all the items Modsy uses to fill your space (although they do customize the selection to your budget), it's still a great way to get ideas from experts at an affordable price. I pay a lot in rent so that I can enjoy where I live, and I felt like Modsy was a valuable tool as an extension of that. It helped me make the most out of my apartment and made sure I did so without wasting money on furniture I would later hate.

If you're moving and don't have the mind of an interior designer but want to love your space, I can't recommend the service highly enough.

Keep reading for a full breakdown of what it's like to use Modsy.

Getting started

To begin, head to the Modsy homepage and click "start your project" to begin the questionnaire.

Select which room they'll be creating a 3D model of for you.

And select what the reason for the redesign is.

If you're moving and looking to completely revamp your space, or just want to update your living room, Modsy will be able to help.

Describe how "finished" the space is.

For me, I worked with a room that had a few pieces I owned already in it. You can pay $15 and have the Modsy team make a 3D model of any item you own and want to be incorporated into your designs. As an alternative, Modsy can find a similar item to stand-in from their curated catalog.

Choose your service level.

You choose between the classic, premium, and luxe (most like the experience of hiring your own interior designer) — whichever best suits your needs.

Complete your profile.

You'll send in photos and crucial measurements of your design space, have the option to continue the design quiz and set budgets for items you really want to buy, and tell the Modsy team more about your vision for the space. If you have existing furniture to add, this is where you can add it.

Take the style quiz.

Take the style quiz and get a nuanced report of your personal style. If you don't agree with the results, you can retake the quiz.

List your budget.

You won't be getting a room filled with exorbitantly priced things you can never buy for yourself (unless you're purposefully going that route).

Get your designs.

Modsy designers took my room measurements and pictures and created a 3D rendering that they dropped personal recommendations into. They also included 3D renderings of furniture I already owned so I could visualize it in the space, like my The Inside bed frame, for $15 per addition.

You can find a curated shopping list of everything in the room to the immediate right, and you can search and swap in alternative products yourself, too.

Once you see the initial design, request adjustments.

If you don't love something in the design, request adjustments to be made. However, it'll take two to three days to get anything back.

Play around with your design.

I played around with the designs inside the Modsy 3D rendering tool, which you have access to, so I could swap in different products and recommend different layouts and items to my Modsy designer. This was also a good way to feel productive in the days I was waiting for my adjusted design to come back, and something my designer referred to later on.

Get the final result.

I requested a different furniture layout, and asked them to refer to the room I had done most of my personal adjustments in.

They also helped curb my worst design habits, and answered my questions regarding texture and colors so I could make better design decisions outside the platform. I also bought some of the furniture suggested by Modsy, and I actually saved money on shipping by buying through the site. They also alerted me to sales prices on items in my designs, which saved me money, too.

All in all, my designer helped me make the most out of my space and was helpful throughout the process. She offered up recommendations that helped utility look fashionable, provided stand-in products for things like gallery walls that I wanted to configure, and Modsy itself helped me be more imaginative and excited about the purchases I was going to make.

  • Few would deny that at the end of a long, hard day, sliding into a comfortable bed outfitted with soft, smooth sheets that pamper your skin is one of life's greatest pleasures.
  • After reviewing dozens of contenders for the best sheets, our top pick is the 280-thread-count Pima Cotton Percale Sheets from L.L. Bean.
  • If you're looking to further increase your bed's comfort, check out our guide to the best pillows.

To get the best sleep possible, we invest in the best mattresses and pillows that our budgets allow. But the journey to dreamland doesn't just stop there: You need quality bed linens too. Because why buy an expensive mattress only to ruin the experience with inferior bedding?

Besides, we spend nearly a third of our lifespan sleeping on our beds, so why wouldn't you want the best sheets possible? Not only do you want something soft and comfortable, but you also want something that's durable and can hold up to washes. So we've made it easy for you: We checked out all the top buying websites, listened to opinions from bed sheet buyers, and tested sheets ourselves to compile our list of the best bed sheet sets you can buy.

Here are the best sheets for your bed:

Updated on 1/17/2019 by Jen Gushue: Updated prices, links, and formatting.

A note on thread count and weave

Thread count: Higher isn't always better

When it's time to buy sheets, many people simply assume that the higher the thread count, the better, and make their choice based on this feature alone. While it's true that thread count (a measurement of how many threads run vertically and horizontally in one square inch of fabric) is important, it turns out that there's another factor that plays a bigger part in sheet comfort: type of fabric.

In fact, according to Consumer Reports, there's no reason to pay extra for sheets with a thread count over 400, but it is worth your while to spend a little more on sheets made from the best kinds of cotton: Pima, Egyptian, or Supima. These long-fiber cottons weave into the softest, most comfortable sheets.

What about weave?

Weave is also important when it comes to choosing sheets you'll love. There are two basic weaves: percale and sateen.

  • Percale sheets have the same number of combed, tightly woven threads running horizontally and vertically. If you prefer sheets with a slightly crisp, cool feel, this is the weave to choose. Percale sheets are durable and strong, standing up to repeated washing even in hot water. Look for a thread count between 200 and 400 for lightweight sheets, or 400 to 600 if you prefer more weight.
  • Sateen sheets (not the same as satin, which is a fabric, not a weave) have more threads running vertically than horizontally, creating fabric with a slight sheen and a very soft, silky feel. Sateen sheets are generally more delicate than percale bedding, and more likely to pill or come apart in the wash. Still, if you crave the silkiest feel against your skin, this is the weave for you. Thread counts between 300 and 600 are the sweet spot for softness and strength.

The best sheets overall

L.L.Bean's wonderfully smooth 280-thread-count Pima Cotton Percale Sheets are durable, comfortable, and just the right weight to give you sweet dreams all year round.

Woven from 100% Pima cotton for the smoothest, softest, make-you-want-to-wiggle feel, L.L.Bean struck gold with its highly rated percale sheet set. As with all percale sheets, these have just a bit of a "crisp" finish, which feels nice and cool against your skin. They are the perfect weight for summer, and unless you live in a very cold climate or prefer to switch to heavier winter sheets, they are cozy enough for the colder months with the addition of a heavier blanket or comforter.

When you toss them in your washing machine and dryer, the sheets come out fresh, unwrinkled, and ready to coax you into the land of Nod. Sized to fit over mattresses up to 15-inches thick, these cotton sheets won't slip or slide as you sleep, and they hold firm to the mattress. They are available in seven basic colors, although alas, no brights. There are a few prints, as well.

L.L.Bean shoppers praise these sheets for their refusal to pill, long life, and wrinkle resistance. Quite a few customers commented that they have purchased several sets of the L.L.Bean sheets, and a common remark was, "These are the only sheets I'll buy."

We chose these sheets as our top pick in our guide to the best cotton sheets. In our testing, these sheets had a soft feel right out of the packaging and they were cool and soft to sleep on. Though L.L.Bean recently discontinued its famous lifetime guarantee, your purchase is still covered for a year, so if you find you're dissatisfied you can return the sheets for any reason.

And we're not the only ones who think the sheets are great. Wirecutter has chosen the L.L.Bean 280-thread-count Percale Sheets as its number one choice six years running, saying these sheets offer a "superior cool feel at a great price."

Consumer Search is another review website that picked the L.L.Bean sheets as its top pick, saying the sheets are "ideal for lovers of crisp, 'old-school' cotton sheets." The reviewer did comment that some buyers felt the sheets were a bit too rough, although they do get softer the more they are washed.

Pros: Smooth, crisp feel, durability, reasonable price

Cons: Only fit mattresses up to 15 inches thick, no bright colors, few prints

The best luxury sheets

If you take your sleep comfort seriously, the pampering touch and good looks of Brooklinen's Luxe Sheets will have you sleeping like a baby.

Started as a Kickstarter project in 2014, Brooklinen has quickly soared to the heights of success, due to its reasonable prices for high-quality bedding. Luxe Sheets start with the best long-fiber cotton, which is woven into single-ply yarn for the finest, yet softest threads. This also means that the finished thread count of 480 is the true number; many other manufacturers weave lower quality, three-ply yarn into their sheets, then use this trick to inflate their thread count.

Brooklinen's Luxe Collection is a sateen weave, with a soft-as-the-clouds feel. Because sateen is woven more tightly than percale, you'll find these sheets cozy and warm, with a soothingly "heavy" feel that many sleepers love. In fact, Ellen Hoffman, the Director of Content Strategy for the Insider Picks team, has been sleeping on these sheets for more than three years, and reports that they are "hands down the best sheets I've ever put on my bed."

She washes her Brooklinen sheets every two weeks and hasn't experienced a degradation in quality; in fact, she says they've softened with time and, thankfully, don't hold on to stains. Her white sheet set has not yellowed after frequent washings either. Overall, Ellen's sheets are in great condition (no rips or tears, no stains, etc.) after years of use, which is comforting to hear given their higher price.

The softness of these sheets increases every time they are washed. As a bonus, the sheets' wrinkle-resistance improves with each wash, as well. And, by the way, you can do that washing in your machine, then either line-dry your bedding or use your dryer on low heat.

The buzz doesn't stop there. Brooklinen has received positive press all over the web, with InStyle saying, "In order to design beautiful, affordable, and ridiculously comfortable sheets, Brooklinen co-founders Rich and Vicki simply focus on quality and manufacturing responsibly." Vogue writes, "the allure of this brand is certainly its technique and use of long-staple Egyptian cotton, which produces sheets and comforters that are softer than most."

Brooklinen currently offers the Luxe Sheets in seven solid colors, along with patterns like stripes and grids. It also frequently releases limited-editor colors and patterns. You can even mix and match colors or patterns within a sheet set, which is definitely a unique perk. The sheets fit mattresses up to 15 inches thick, so be sure to measure before ordering.

Pros: Super soft, high quality, mix-and-match sheet sets

Cons: Expensive, best if line-dried

The best linen sheets

Having tested many linen sheets, we found MagicLinen's to be best because of the wide range of colors and an option for thicker mattresses, and they age beautifully.

If linen is your bedsheet material of choice, the best is from MagicLinen. The Lithuanian company may be a little-known brand, but its sheets rival those from established players in terms of price and quality. That's because linen is the only fabric the company works with.

As a linen sheets aficionado who has tested many, Insider Picks' editor Sally Kaplan swears by MagicLinen. Why linen? It's cozy, cooling, and keeps you from sweating through the night, she said.

One problem with linen sheets, she said, is that there are few options for deeper mattresses. She found that linen sheets have "constant bunching and corner flipping." But this is something MagicLinen addresses: Besides the many color and pattern options, there's a "deep" option for thicker mattresses.

Brand new, the sheets won't feel as soft as you might expect. However, over time, they will get softer. After many washes, instead of ripping apart, the MagicLinen sheets only "age as gracefully as Meryl Streep," she said. "I'm wary of linen sheets that come to me super silky right out of the bag because that's often a sign that they were treated with chemical conditioners and softeners. MagicLinen is stonewashed — a softening process that's completely natural and nontoxic — and Okeo-tex certified, meaning they're not processed with any harmful chemicals."

Incredibly, the sheets are hand-cut and sewn, yet the company has managed to keep prices competitive. If you end up loving these sheets as much as she does, MagicLinen also makes other products, like curtains and tablecloths. — Les Shu

Read Insider Picks' full review of MagicLinen sheets.

Pros: Soft, ages well, comes in many colors and patterns, "deep" option for thick mattresses, natural and non-toxic

Cons: Not the softest right out of the bag

The best Supima sheets

You don't need to own a Casper mattress to get the benefits of their  Cool Supima Sheet Set and Duvet Cover. Woven from some of the best cotton on the market, these sheets are worth their price.

Supima is considered some of the highest quality cotton you can find. It's a trademark for US-grown cotton with extra-long fibers. "Longer fibers contribute to the strength and softness of apparel and home products, ensuring that they are more comfortable, retain color longer and resist pilling over time," according to the organization that licenses that name to companies that use Supima. While the origin of most cotton is difficult to trace, Supima is strictly regulated and represents only 1% of the world's cotton. Which is what makes Casper's Cool Supima Sheets so unique and so comfortable.

Insider Picks reporter Connie Chen tested the Cool Supima sheets and duvet cover, as well as Casper's pillow. "After many nights of great sleep, I can now count (Casper's) bedding products among my favorites." Overall, she thought the sheets were cool and crisp, and the duvet cover had a balanced weight and was well-designed.

The elastic band of the fitted sheet is rubberized, which makes gripping onto the mattress more effective and prevents them from pulling off. The sheet may seem bigger than normal during the first use, but that's to account for a 2% shrink factor — a couple of washes should bring them down in size.

These are "longer-lasting, pilling-resistant, and comfortable sheets that are certainly worth the investment," she said. "The percale weave is what gives the sheets their crisp, cool feel. They're perfect for the summer and warmer climates, or if you tend to overheat in your sleep."

The duvet cover is equally comfortable. Ellen Hoffman, Insider Picks' Director of Content Strategy, praised the "superior design details that solve for the annoying inconveniences of typical duvet covers." If the quilt shifts around inside, there are hidden openings that let you easily readjust. It has a good weight, but it's not so heavy that it overwhelms.

In terms of price, the sheets are reasonable. "At $120, its Cool Supima queen-sized sheet set sits between the value-focused Brooklinen and $200-plus options from Parachute, Boll & Branch, and Snowe, so purely based on price, it seemed to strike a good balance," Chen said. — Les Shu

Pros: Made from high-quality US-grown cotton, cool and crisp, well designed, rubberized elastic

Cons: Does not fit deeper mattresses

The best sheets in fun colors and patterns

Crane & Canopy makes beautiful, silky soft sheets in tons of fun patterns and colors.

Crane & Canopy is a startup that began selling easy-to-use duvet covers in 2012. Since then, the company has branched out into sheets, comforters, pillows, blankets, towels, washcloths, and more. We tried a set of sheets from Crane & Canopy and we loved them. Not only are the sheets silky smooth and soft straight out of the package, they also come in several fun prints and colors.

If you're bored with solid colors and your pile of white sheets, you'll enjoy looking through Crane & Canopy's selection. You can get polka dots, stripes, herringbone, embroidery, and other unique prints that look different from your run of the mill chevron. There are also fun solid colors like coral and lilac as well as more traditional shades like cream, white, gray, and blue.

I tried the gray striped 300-thread count cotton sheet set on my bed, and it felt amazingly soft right out of the package. The fitted sheet is generous in size so you don't feel like you're running out of fabric when it comes time to tuck it in under your mattress. The stripes look classic and cool, especially with a fun bright blanket and pillowcases on the bed for contrast.

Crane & Canopy gives you the option to buy a set with one fitted sheet, one flat sheet, and two pillowcases or you can buy each piece on its own. It's nice to have the option because sometimes you just don't need more pillowcases or flat sheets, but you do need a new fitted sheet to fit a new mattress or what have you.

All the sheets are made from long-staple cotton or Belgian linen, and the company's bedding is Oeko-Tex certified, so you know your sheets are free from strange chemicals. — Malarie Gokey

Pros: Super soft out of the package, fun colors and prints, can buy as sets or as individual pieces, decent price, long-staple cotton

Cons: Tad pricey for budget buyers

The best flannel sheets

Cozy as a hug and warm as a sweater, the Pinzon Heavyweight Velvet Flannel Sheets are the perfect accompaniment to your cold-weather Zzz's.

When Old Man Winter starts nipping at your nose, it's time to break out the flannel sheets. The Pinzon Heavyweight Velvet Flannel Sheets will keep you sleeping cozy, and the great price won't have you waking up in a cold sweat.

Made from 100% combed cotton, these sheets are crafted in Portugal, and have a double-napped, velvety soft finish. Flannel sheets are not rated in thread count, but rather, in ounces per square yard. The sweet spot for high-quality flannel sheets is 5 to 6 ounces per square yard, and at 5.6 ounces, these are perfect. The weight adds to the coziness, giving you a snug feeling.

One caution: While the Pinzon sheets are very durable, and resist pilling or ripping, we did come across a few customer reviews complaining that the sheets shed for the first few washes, so you might want to send your set through several washing machine cycles before making up your bed for the first time.

There are several colors to choose from and a few patterns. The Pinzon sheets fit mattresses up to 18-inches thick but are only available for queen, king, and California king sizes.

Pros: Cozy, soft warmth at a great price

Cons: Some shedding, not available for twin or full mattresses

The best organic cotton sheets

If organic cotton and Fair Trade standards are important to you, the Boll & Branch Signature Soft Solid Hemmed Sheet Sets will help you sleep easy.

Boll & Branch's sateen sheets are made from 300-thread-count long-staple organic cotton, which makes them an unusual find since only 2% of the world's cotton is considered organic. Beyond that, they're both GOTS certified (the whole manufacturing process is considered organic) and Fair Trade certified, which means they hit standards for ethical wages and working conditions.

If that alone doesn't make you feel good about the sheets, the quality of the fabric will convince you. We found them to be super soft and silky to the touch.

Boll & Branch's sheets were also top pick at the Good Housekeeping textile labs, where testers found that the sheets keep their generous sizing even after washing. Although they're more expensive than other sheets, many owners consider them a luxury that's worth it.

The sheets are available in nine tasteful colors and have a 17-inch deep pocket to accommodate taller mattresses. Boll & Branch sells the sheets in twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king, and split king sizes. If you're at all unsatisfied, these sheets can be returned for a full refund within 30 days. — Ayn-Monique Klahre

Pros: Super-soft, organic, good color range, 17-inch-deep pocket, more size options

Cons: Slightly less soft and breathable than other brands

The best modal bed sheets

If you crave the softness of silk without the diva-level fuss and bother silk demands, you'll love the feel of Pure Beech's Modal Sateen Sheets.

Modal is another fairly new addition to the bed sheet scene, and like bamboo, it's quickly rising in popularity. Also like bamboo, modal is a form of rayon. It starts with beechwood chips, which are dissolved into pulp, dried, and then spun into thread. The resulting material is extremely soft, resists shrinking, fading, or discoloring, and breathes quite well. Modal tends to resist pilling and is very durable.

Pure Beech specializes in modal sheets, and the Modal Sateen Sheets are remarkably soft and breathe well, remaining cool even on hot summer nights.

On the downside, we did come across some customer reviews mentioning that the sheets did not last as long as they expected, and ripped or shredded after just a year or two of use. The problem may well lie in the sheet's care. Unlike cotton, modal must be washed in cold water and dried on low — not subjected to the high temperatures that cotton tolerates.

The Pure Beech Modal Sateen Sheets are 400 thread count, fit mattresses up to 16 inches thick, and are available in many colors for twin through California king beds.

Pros: Extremely soft, resist fading or shrinking, don't pill or become scratchy, good selection of colors

Cons: Need to be washed and dried on cool settings, may weaken or tear otherwise

The best microfiber sheets

The Brushed Microfiber Sheets from Brooklyn Bedding offer comfort and durability at an affordable price, so you can have luxuriously soft sheets on a budget.

Brooklyn Bedding made its first appearance in the bedding industry with mattresses crafted in the US and sold directly to shoppers for a more affordable price. This company was one of the first to become a part of the bed-in-a-box industry. Since then, the product line has expanded to include sheets and pillows.

I tested the Brushed Microfiber Sheets, and was immediately impressed with how soft they felt right out of the package. These aren't the type of sheets you'll have to wash multiple times to "break in." I also liked that they didn't feel too thin. These are durable sheets that hold up well in the wash, and I've washed and dried them multiple times with no issues.

They come out of the dryer feeling as soft as they did when I first took them out of the packaging. These aren't as prone to wrinkling as cotton or bamboo-derived sheets tend to be, which is great if you're like me and you tend to procrastinate when it comes to folding your laundry.

The Brooklyn Bedding Brushed Microfiber sheets are made from 100% polyester, constructed with a tight weave that lends to their soft feel. Surprisingly, these sheets do have a lower thread count at 300, but in my experience, this didn't affect the quality at all. Thanks to the material used, I also like that they won't have you sleeping too warm. They have a durable feel, but they don't trap in heat during the night.

These fit my Saatva mattress perfectly, but if you do have a thinner mattress, you may find that they are a little roomier than you'd like, causing them to slip around a bit. If you're unsure, Brooklyn Bedding offers a 30-night trial, so you can return them no questions asked if you find you don't like them.

With the comfort, high-quality feel, and durability these sheets offer, I was especially impressed with their affordable price.

When it comes to size and options, there are plenty with these sheets. You can choose from several different solid colors, and they're available in a wide range of sizes, from Twin to California King, so you can find the perfect fit for your bed. — Kylie Joyner

Pros: Soft and comfortable, durable, affordable, color options available, come with a 120-night trial and one year warranty for extra peace of mind

Cons: May be a bit roomy on thinner mattresses

The best budget sheets

The Room Essentials Jersey Sheet Set comes with a fitted sheet, flat sheet, and two pillowcases. Made out of a cotton-poly blend, the jersey fabric is so warm, comfortable, and soft, you may not need a blanket.

For an affordable price, this Jersey Sheet Set from Room Essentials gives you all the sheets you need. Made of 100% cotton (solid colors) or 50-50 cotton-poly blend, the sheets have that worn-in feel of a nice T-shirt.

These sheets are recommended by Insider Picks' SEO strategist, Shalom Goodman. "I was brought up with rough sheets, but now I don't think I could go back to that," he said. "There's just a cozy feeling about these."

The top sheet is so warm that he has even foregone the use of a comforter. And, he likes the stretchiness of the fabric, which makes the fitted sheet easy to tuck into the mattress. One downside is that they take a while to dry after washing. — Les Shu

Pros: Soft and warm, stretchy fabric easy to put on, top sheet can sub for a blanket, affordable

Cons: Jersey may not appeal to everyone, longer to dry

  • Unfortunately, you don't get to pick when exactly in a relationship you celebrate Valentine's Day.
  • If it's still early days or you're looking for a low-key gift that's equal parts funny and thoughtful, we've curated 38 gifts that hang in the balance.
  • Below, you'll find 38 low-pressure gifts for every relationship level and budget.

Valentine's Day gifts can pose a unique challenge.

Depending on the recipient (or how long you've been seeing them), the traditional gifts of diamonds, surprise trips to Paris on private jets, and nightmarishly huge teddy bears may be a bit too enthusiastic. For those looking for no-pressure Valentine's Day gifts, humor is the guiding light. You can pay homage to inside jokes, your favorite internet memes, and convey affection without slathering it on too thick.

Below are a few of the most clever — but still useful — gifts you'll find on the internet. Your recipient will feel cared for, and you won't have to poll friends last-minute to find a companion for an all-expenses-paid couples vacation to the Bahamas either.

The top 5 best low-pressure Valentine's Day gifts:

  1. Showing up to their place with cute mimosa glasses, plus all the fixings
  2. White Walker-inspired alcohol for the religious GoT fan
  3. Nathan W. Pyle's "Strange Planet" cartoon book
  4. A hot sauce subscription to keep things spicy all year long
  5. A date night bucket list for spontaneous future dates

Below are 38 funny Valentine's Day gifts to give this year:

This $20 handheld milk frother is one of the most foolproof kitchen tools I've used to make coffee

milk frother

There's no better way to start your day than with a nice cup of coffee. While a plain old drip coffee will usually do, there's something about sipping on a latte or cappuccino that feels just a little more special. But specialty coffee drinks don't come cheap — the average American spends over $1,000 a year on coffee, according to an Amerisleep study

I'm all about getting my caffeine kick every morning, but with New York City coffee shops charging $5 or more for a latte I've realized I'm better off becoming my own barista. The Aerolatte handheld milk frother is an affordable, easy-to-use solution that'll make quality coffee beverages from the comfort of your own kitchen, and help you save some money too.

The Aerolatte handheld milk frother may be a small device, but it has the power to seriously up the ante on your morning brew. It comes as one piece, but if you'd like you can also purchase a stand to keep the gadget on display and easily accessible. Truthfully, this is one of the most foolproof kitchen tools I've ever used. On one end of the device you'll find a thick handle and on the other end you'll find the frothing head, a circular coil-like thing. I can't tell you the mechanics of it all, but I can confirm that it works well.

To use, simply place the frothing head into a large cup of milk and press the power button on the handle. As the frother vibrates you'll see the milk thicken up into a silky, creamy foam. All you need is about 15-20 seconds and then your foam is all ready to go. Brew your favorite beans and pour this right on top for a beverage that's coffee-shop quality. To clean, rinse the frothing head immediately after using it. Every once in a while, you should fill a cup with warm, soapy water and froth for a deeper clean.

If you're not a big coffee drinker, you can still get a lot of use out of this little gadget. Of course it works just as well for teas — think matcha and chai lattes — but it can also be used in even more creative ways, like to make a single serving of decadent, homemade whipped cream. And, you can use any kind of milk, even dairy-free options.

Whipping up some foam and pouring it over drip coffee or espresso makes those regular coffees feel a little more indulgent. While I usually chug my cups of black coffee, adding some foam makes it feel like a treat that's worth slowing down and sipping on.

You might think that making fancy coffee drinks is expensive or labor-intensive — after all an espresso machine can run you well over $100 — but this is a frugal solution that'll give you that same delicious flavor for a fraction of the price. Being able to have complete control over what you put into your drink is pretty nice, and so is never having to pay an extra dollar for almond milk instead of regular. Plus, you'll impress your guests when you whip up drinks they thought they could only get for $8 at their local cafe.

At under $20, I can't sing the praises of this product enough. Even just using it for a week will get you your money's worth, but it'll last for much longer than that. It runs on AA batteries, so just switch those out when the time comes to keep it running as good as new.

There are plenty of great milk frothers out there, but if you're looking for a no-frills option that'll give you great foam for a great price, the Aerolatte handheld milk frother is an easy choice. Maybe you'll never really give up your morning runs to the local coffee shop, or maybe this will convert you — either way, this is a great addition to any coffee lover's kitchen.

personalized valentines day gifts 3

  • There are fewer Valentine's Day gifts more thoughtful than a personalized one that reflects your Valentine's identity, interests, and habits.
  • It only takes a few extra minutes of thought and work to turn a generic gift into one that couldn't be given to anyone else.
  • We've rounded up 23 personalized Valentine's Day gifts that'll add a little something special to their day.

If you think about it, most gifts are "personalized" in that they're (hopefully) geared towards your recipient's specific likes, interests, or hobbies. Still, there are ways to go a step further and make it clear that the gift is made for them, and them only.

A personalized Valentine's Day gift will make them feel special, particularly on a day when many people fall back on hasty and generic presents.

Monograms and engravings are a simple way to make a mark and distinguish the gift — be it a towel, necklace, or leather accessory — as their own. There are also creative personalized gifts that take into account everything from their workout habits to the way they sleep.

The 5 best personalized Valentine's Day gifts:

  1. A monogrammed leather travel organizer, $95
  2. The best way for vinyl lovers to discover new music, $110
  3. A map poster of somewhere special to them, $49
  4. A personalized curation of wine, from $60
  5. A zodiac ring, $70

Take the extra time to make your gift unique with these 23 personalized Valentine's Day gifts.

  • US News & World Report has released its fifth annual Best Countries list, which ranks 73 countries based on global perceptions.
  • US News partnered with BAV Group and the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School to evaluate each country on 65 attributes grouped into nine subrankings. Over 20,000 people hailing from 36 countries were surveyed.
  • Entrepreneurship and Quality of Life carried the most weight when determining rankings.
  • Ten out of the top 17 countries are in Europe. Switzerland placed No. 1 for the fourth year in a row, and the UK dropped out of the top five for the first time. Four Nordic countries made the cut.
  • Canada replaced Japan in the No. 2 spot — good news for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle!
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

For the fifth year in a row, US News & World Report has released their ranking of the best countries in world.

For 2020, US News ranked 73 countries based on global perceptions. In partnership with BAV Group and the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, US News surveyed over 20,000 people across the globe and evaluated countries on 65 metrics.

To secure a place on this year's list, countries had to rank among the top 150 countries in the world in the 2017 U.N. Human Development Index as well as among the top 100 countries in terms of GDP, foreign direct investment inflows, and international tourism receipts, according to 2017 World Bank data. Countries that did not meet these four criteria or that didn't report this data were excluded.

US News sent its survey to participants that would be "broadly representative of the global population." Those that participated hailed from 36 countries across the Americas, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

The 65 metrics on which countries were evaluated were grouped into nine subrankings: adventure, citizenship, cultural influence, entrepreneurship, heritage, movers, open for business, power, and quality of life. Each subranking carried a different weight in contributing to the final ranking, with Entrepreneurship and Quality of Life yielding the most influence — 17.87% and 16.77%, respectively.

Here, in ascending order, are the top 17 countries:

The Zip-Around Wallet is made from soft, calfskin leather and comes in four classic colors. It comes from the same manufacturer as Celine and Prada, and Italic estimates it would cost $295-$300 in traditional retail. It's also good to note that the company plants one tree for every order. You can find a full review of the company's leather goods here, and of their candles here
