I tried Firstleaf, a subscription box that delivers wines from top vineyards around the world for only $13 per bottle — here's how it works

firstleaf wine delivery main

  • Firstleaf is a wine subscription service that launched in early 2016 and is one of many other clubs that help you enjoy wine in a more convenient, accessible, and affordable way.
  • Its introductory box of three wines is only $15 and sets the wheels in motion for the service to learn more about your tastes and preferences as they evolve.
  • The wines all come from award-winning winemakers and vineyards, but you have the final say about which ones are considered true award winners in your book through Firstleaf's rating and review system.

Based on the number of wine clubs and subscription services that have started in the past few years, the jig is clearly up: people like wine, but most of us also don't know what we're talking about or what we're actually sipping. It's easier when someone just tells us what's good.

A new entrant to the field of encouraging your enthusiasm for wine is Firstleaf, an algorithm-based wine subscription service that learns more about your tastes and preferences as you try different wines and curates a personalized experience for you over time.

As with most personalized services, you start off by taking a short online quiz, which asks about your white vs. red vs. rosé vs. sparkling preferences, what region you prefer your wine to come from, and how much wine you drink per month.

Firstleaf then gives you an introductory offer of three wines for only $15, plus tax and $4.95 shipping, as a way to welcome you to the club. It also serves as a kind of diagnostic test (that's infinitely more fun than the SAT one you took in high school) for the rest of your Firstleaf experience.

my firstleaf box

I opted for a mix of red and white, and received my first box safely at my door. The full-sized bottles were securely packed in a cardboard crate and each came with its own informational card explaining the origins of the wine and region, tasting notes, and food pairings. All this information can also be found online when you log in to your account and click on your past orders.

My first box consisted of a Chardonnay from Paso Robles, a Malbec from Mendoza, Argentina, and a Zinfandel from Sonoma County. All were international wine competition winners. Despite their prestige, I didn't love them all, which was completely fine and not unexpected. These first bottles were only $5 each and I would have the opportunity to rate the picks and explain my specific thoughts.

firstleaf rate wines

Once you log back into your account, you can give each wine a "Thumbs Up" (I'd drink this wine again and Firstleaf will send more like it), a "Thumbs Down" (not for me), or leave the thumb icons blank if you have no opinion and don't feel strongly either way. There is a section below each wine where you can write additional comments and notes for Firstleaf or just for personal reference. You can also reorder six bottles of the wine you did love for only $79, plus tax and $9.95 shipping.

After this initial box, every future shipment will consist of six wines (for $79, plus tax and $9.95 shipping) and be delivered automatically every two months. However, you can choose any other delivery date or cancel your subscription at any time.

By design, Firstleaf works better the more you use it. The more wines you rate, the more closely its system can match future shipments to your taste and adjust picks if your tastes evolve from the initial quiz.

Using Firstleaf isn't only about convenience, education, or personalization, though these are all strong reasons why you should try it. With each bottle coming out to about $13, it's also simply a much more affordable way to enjoy quality wines from top vineyards around the world.

The 10 US cities most vulnerable to a housing downturn when the next recession happens

San Francisco Metro Area

  • An analysis by Redfin found the 10 housing markets that are at the greatest risk of a downturn in the next recession.
  • The study measured each metro area on seven variables.
  • The four main, highest-weighted variables include: the ratio of median home sale prices to median household income, the ratio of the average home loan to the average home value, year-to-year home price volatility, and the number of flipped homes that have been sold twice within 12 months.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

In the midst of the United States' ongoing trade war with China, talks of a looming recession have been floating around the media.

When it comes to real estate, there are several key factors that help forecast which housing markets will be the most vulnerable when the next recession hits — whether it happens now or ten years from now.

A recent analysis by Redfin looked at major metro areas across the US and found the 10 that are most likely to be at risk of a housing downturn in the next recession.

"Recessions don't always necessarily lead to big swings in home prices, but they do in certain areas. That's why it's important to look at how much the housing market is at risk opposed to the overall economy," Redfin's chief economist Daryl Fairweather explained to Business Insider.

Read more: The 25 best places to live in America

The study measured each metro area on four main variables: the ratio of median home sale prices to the median household income, the ratio of the average home loan to the average home value, year-to-year home price volatility, and the number of flipped homes (homes that have been sold twice at different prices within 12 months). These four variables each held the same weight and were the most weighted factors in the study.

"The reason why those [four] are the most important [variables] is because they are the ones that impact housing the most," Fairweather told Business Insider.

There were three other, less weighted, variables measured in the study: the diversity of local employment, the share of the local economy that is dependent on exports, and the share of local households headed by someone 65 or older. The weight of each variable remained consistent throughout the study. You can read more on the methodology and the weight of each variable here

Keep reading to see the 10 metro areas that are most at risk, ranked in order of increasing vulnerability to a real estate dip.

How to send a voice message on your iPhone to anyone with an iPhone, iPad, or Mac

texting phone colorful

  • It's possible to send voice messages on your iPhone, if you prefer to speak instead of writing out text messages.
  • By default, voice messages sent via iPhone expire two minutes after they've been played, but this can be changed in your Settings.
  • There's no limit to how long a voice message can be.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

While texting is the most popular form of communication these days, sometimes you have so much to say that you can't fit it into a quick text message.

Thankfully, when that's the case, your iPhone offers the ability to send voice messages to your contacts, so that they can actually hear what you have to say rather than just reading the words on the screen.

While the feature only works when the person you're sending the voice message to is using another Apple device like an iPhone, iPad, or even a MacBook with iMessage installed, it's a quick and easy way to chat.

Here's what you need to know about how to send a voice message.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

MacBook Pro (From $1,299.99 at Best Buy)

How to send a voice message on your iPhone

1. On your iPhone's home screen, tap the Messages app icon to open it.

2. Either begin a new iMessage conversation by tapping the pen and paper icon in the upper right-hand corner of the Messages screen or open an existing iMessage conversation.

3. To the right of the iMessage text box, press and hold the small microphone icon and begin recording your voice message.

4. When finished, release the microphone button. You will then see two icons next to the message; one will be a play button shaped like a right-facing triangle, while the other will be an upward-facing arrow.

IMG_8449

5. Press the play button to listen to what you've just recorded, or tap the upward-facing arrow to send your voice message.

It should be noted that, by default, voice messages are deleted two minutes after the recipient listens to them. However, you can choose to keep the message you've sent by tapping the "Keep" option beneath the media file.

IMG_8450

You can also change your iPhone's automatic settings to ensure your messages are kept longer on your device.

How to change the expiration length of voice messages on your iPhone

To do this, simply go to the Settings app, tap Messages, scroll down to the "Audio Messages" heading and select "Never" rather than "After 2 Minutes" within the Expire tab.

This makes it so any voice message you send or receive won't expire on your device. Messages you send to others, however, will still expire on their devices, unless they've also changed their settings.

An $88 million mansion in NYC with a panic room and a saltwater pool has gotten a $26 million price chop over 6 years — take a look inside

ues mansion

An opulent mansion in New York City with a panic room and a Versailles-inspired dining room has been on and off the market for nearly six years. Originally asking $114 million, the townhouse at 12 E. 69th St. is now for sale for $88 million.

The listing agent, Paula DelNunzio of Brown Harris Stevens, said the mansion is the only 40-foot-wide house with a 20,000-square-foot interior that has been on the market in a totally renovated condition. Other similarly wide houses for sale in Manhattan have needed extensive renovations, she said.

"The scale of the interior rooms is beyond belief and without compare, as there are four of the most remarkable rooms ever seen in a New York mansion," DelNunzio told Business Insider.

The dining room was inspired by Versailles, according to Curbed.

It's been on and off the market since December 2013, when it was originally listed for $114 million. The next year, it was discounted to $98 million.

In 2017, a buyer was in contract to buy the home for $80 million, The Real Deal reported. But the deal fell through, so the house went up for rent for $175,000 a month before being relisted for $88 million.

Here's what the $88 million house looks like inside.

DON'T MISS: Millennials don't want to buy baby boomers' sprawling, multi-bedroom homes, and it's creating a major problem in the real-estate market

A townhouse on New York City's Upper East Side is for sale for $88 million.

The six-bedroom townhouse is 40 feet wide and "totally renovated," according to the listing agent, Paula DelNunzio of Brown Harris Stevens.

Four windows span both the front and the rear facades, "providing remarkable light at all times," according to the listing.

It's half a block from Central Park.

"There is no other renovated 40-foot-wide mansion available right now between Fifth and Madison Avenues," the listing says.

Vincent Viola, the CEO of Virtu Financial, bought the house in 2005 for $20 million, according to The Real Deal.

The opulent six-level home spans more than 20,000 square feetThe floors in the entry hall are heated onyx marble, the listing says.

The formal entry hall has 14-foot ceilings.

As the listing specifies, there's water filtration throughout the house. It also comes with a security system with cameras, not to mention a "heated sidewalk for automatic snow removal."

It opens to a rotunda with 28-1/2-foot ceilings.

The home's "interior design concepts are typical of the great mansions of Europe and of Stanford White in America," DelNunzio told Business Insider.

"The original architect of this mansion, William Bosworth, worked on the Rockefeller family estate, Kykuit in Tarrytown, and under the auspices of John D. Rockefeller Jr., Bosworth was commissioned to restore the Palace of Versailles, France," she continued.

A hidden door off the main hallway leads to the double-height library and office with 24-foot ceilings.

The house was commissioned for an international silk trader in 1883 and then renovated into its neoclassical style in 1913, the listing says.

A colorful mural is painted on the library's ceiling.

On the garden level, an additional entrance to the library offers private access to the office.

"The scale of the interior rooms is beyond belief and without compare, as there are four of the most remarkable rooms ever seen in a New York mansion," DelNunzio told Business Insider.

Viola, the owner, collected art, furnishings, and decoration ideas during his world travels "to combine the very best of the classical tradition with every modern technological convenience," according to the listing.

"As there is no other property like this available in New York, it is for the person who seeks the rarest of the rare," DelNunzio said.

The home almost sold to a Chinese buyer for $80 million in 2017, but the deal fell through, The Real Deal reported.

The house then went up for rent for $175,000 a month before being relisted for $88 million, according to The Real Deal.

The home's third floor includes the 40-foot-wide kitchen, where four windows bring in bright, natural light.

The kitchen comes with "almost every cooking appliance known to a chef," according to the listing.

On the same level is the formal dining room, which was inspired by the Palace of Versailles in France and can accommodate more than 40 people.

Bosworth, the home's architect, was also commissioned to restore Versailles, according to DelNunzio.

The house includes two bedrooms on the fourth level, and a master-bedroom suite with a large sitting room and two full baths on the fifth level.

The two 40-foot-wide bedrooms on the fourth floor "could be converted to four or more bedrooms," the listing says.

The fifth-floor master bedroom also includes two dressing rooms and a separate guest suite.

One of the master bedroom's dressing rooms "is wired as a panic room," the listing says.

The bathroom pictured in the listing looks like it belongs in a palace.

Like much of the apartment, it's decorated opulently. The apartment has a total of nine bathrooms.

On the home's lower level is the saline swimming pool, as well as two saunas and a full bath.

In the rear of the pool is the lower entrance to the split-level home movie theater.

The movie theater spans two levels and includes 12 plush velvet chairs.

In total, according to the listing, the apartment spreads across six floors, culminating in a 2,650-foot rooftop that has a garden — and views of Central Park.

JetBlue A321neo 20

  • JetBlue's very first Airbus A321neo is finally here and is currently flying passengers.
  • The airline has 85 of the planes on order, but deliveries have been taking longer than expected due to production delays.
  • The plane features a brand-new cabin, and a new in-flight entertainment system.
  • Business Insider had a chance to tour the plane, and we were impressed. Scroll down for a full photo walk-through.

JetBlue has finally begun to fly its first Airbus A321neo.

The airline has been eagerly awaiting the new efficient jet since it place an order for 85 of the jets in October 2011.

With a 15-20% boost in fuel efficiency over the previous generation of A321 jets — known as the A321ceo, or "current engine option" — the A321neo — "new engine option" — also boasts a 500 nautical mile increase in range.

Unfortunately, production delays at Airbus have meant that deliveries have been delayed.

Although 13 of the aircraft were contractually scheduled to be delivered through 2019, JetBlue's president, Joanna Geraghty, said on a July call with investors that the airline expects to receive just six of the new aircraft this year.

"We're very disappointed with the continued delays to our A321neo program as a result of the Airbus production issues,"JetBlue CEO Robin Hayes said during the call.

However, JetBlue received the first A321neo in late June, and after two weeks of test flights on a variety of routes, the airline is ready to "officially" launch the plane into service.

"JetBlue's new A321neo boasts features such as the widest and most comfortable seats available for this aircraft type, and a host of thoughtful design elements that are meant to enhance customer comfort and help our crew members deliver award-winning service," said Hayes.

Business Insider had a chance to tour the plane before it entered regular service, and we were seriously impressed.

Take a look below for a walk-through of the impressive new jet, which gives an idea of what all of JetBlue's jets will look like soon.

Here it is: JetBlue's first A321neo, named David Neelman

Named for the airline's legendary founder, this A321neo is JetBlue's first of 85 on order.

The neo, or "new engine option," is an updated version of the highly successful A320 family. It uses a new Pratt & Whitney GTF engine for a 15-20% fuel efficiency boost.

Unfortunately, production of the plane has been delayed, leading to some frustration as customers eagerly await deliveries.

JetBlue was supposed to receive 13 of its 85 orders through 2019. However, during a call with investors in July, JetBlue's president Joanna Geraghty shared that it expected just six this year.

That's caused a few delays in the airline's plans to retrofit older planes with new interiors.

However, the airline finally has its first A321neo — which was delivered in June — ready to start flying regularly.

The plane features an all-new cabin, virtually the same as the second phase of the airline's program to reconfigure its older A320 planes, but with a few tweaks unique to the A321neo

JetBlue has currently retrofit about 20 of its existing A320 planes with a new cabin, and expects to reconfigure the remaining 80–90 by the end of 2020. Some of those jets have an older "phase one" cabin, but most will be "phase two," similar to the A321neo.

The plane features a sleek, modern look, with brand new seats and pleasant mood lighting (which, obviously, is blue-hued).

The cabin is basically split into two sections. The larger forward cabin holds rows 1–23, while the last 10 rows are in the smaller back cabin.

In between these cabins is a small self-serve snack area called the "pantry." It's actually a little bigger than it looks in this photo, and is a pleasant place to get up and stretch your legs or grab a snack during a flight.

Drew Litavis, JetBlue's manager of aircraft interiors and in-flight technology, told Business Insider that the pantry was designed by AIM Altitude, the same company that builds the luxurious bars and lounges featured in planes from Emirates, Qatar, and Virgin Atlantic.

The pantry will be stocked with snacks and drinks during flights.

Each seat features an adjustable headrest, which can move up and down...

... And which have adjustable wings, so you can lean to either side with your head still supported.

The wings seemed hefty and stable, like they would actually be supportive.

Each seat is about 18.4 inches wide, with 3 inches of recline and 32 inches of pitch — on the higher side for an economy seat.

They definitely felt comfortable, and nicely padded, despite concerns that JetBlue might remove padding from new seats to allow for more legroom.

The seat-back pockets have also been redesigned with a few specific pockets and panels for gadgets like phones and headphones, charging cables, and water bottles.

For those needing a little more space, there are a few rows of extra legroom seats, branded as "Even More Space."

See also: Apply here to attend IGNITION: Transportation, an event focused on the future of transportation, in San Francisco on October 22.

These are the same Collins Aerospace Meridian-made seats as the rest of the cabin, but they offer about 35 inches of pitch.

These were also quite comfortable.

While this particular version of the plane didn't feature JetBlue's "Mint" business class, future A321neos will have it.

Every seat, regardless of legroom, has the same redesigned in-flight entertainment system, and it's definitely impressive.

The 10-inch HD touchscreen was bright and easy to see, with an anti-glare coating.

Interestingly, JetBlue decided to do away with the remote controls that used to be in the seats' armrests. Instead, passengers can pair their phones with the screens and use those as remotes.

One of the biggest complaints the airline heard from passengers was that it was too easy to knock the remote with an errant elbow and accidentally change the channel or stop a movie, according to Litavis. The phone-pairing is an elegant way to take care of that

It was an easy three steps to get my phone paired.

Here's the view from my phone.

You could also just use the touchscreen.

As has been the case for years on JetBlue, there's free live TV and Wi-Fi on board.

The airline also added DVR-like functionality to the TVs. This way, if you need to get up to use the bathroom or let a seat-mate get to the aisle, you can just pause your show and not miss anything.

Additionally, there are about 150 on-demand movies, and full seasons of popular television shows.

There's also, of course, a moving map with flight information.

Each monitor has a headphone jack, and a USB port for charging phones and tablets.

There are also universal power sockets — with more USB ports.

There's an NFC-enabled chip in the entertainment system, but it doesn't do anything yet. Litivas said they installed it for "possible future use."

The overhead compartments are nice and spacious, like on the standard A320s.

Even the lavatories have been redesigned, with stylish floors and wallpaper.

Overall, it's an impressive and comfortable plane. It's easy to see why the airline is so eager to add more of them to its fleet.

35% of millennials say paying off their student debt is a more significant life milestone than buying a home or starting a family, new study shows

Happy grad millennial

Millennials are creating a new kind of life milestone: paying off their student-loan debt.

And it's currently the most significant life milestone they think they can achieve, according to 35% of millennials in a new survey by personal finance company SoFi. The survey polled more than 1,000 Americans ages 22 to 35.

That overrides other traditional life milestones. A quarter of respondents said buying a home is the most important milestone. Meanwhile, 17% said it's saving for retirement, 15% said starting a family, and 4% said starting to invest.

Student-loan debt is at an all-time high. The national total student debt is over $1.5 trillion, and the average student loan debt per graduating student in 2018 who took out loans is $29,800, according to Student Loan Hero.

It's such a burden that it's causing millennials to delay markers of adulthood, like homeownership and starting a family.

Read more: Most millennials and Gen Z define financial success the same way — and it has nothing to do with being rich

Millennials just want to be debt-free

The SoFi survey underscores findings from a Merrill Lynch Wealth Management study published earlier this year, which surveyed more than 2,700 Americans ages 18 to 34. That study found that 60% of respondents define financial success as being debt-free.

"Student debt is having major ripple effects on early adults' futures, financially and personally," the report said. "Four-hundred-thousand early adults who would have purchased a home a decade ago have not been able to afford one due to student debt, and today's early adults take finances into greater consideration in deciding whether and when to have a child than those in past generations."

Paying off student-loan debt is so significant that people are celebrating with parties, music videos, and vacations, Business Insider's Allana Akhtar previously reported.

"It's our like our generation's milestone — to get rid of the debt we incurred to go to school and try to get good jobs," Chelsea McDonnough, who helped pay off her husband's $125,000 student-loan debt, told Akhtar. She celebrated by taking a trip to New Orleans.

dr dennis gross

Skin care, and treating acne in particular, is an ongoing process that takes time, consistency, and plenty of experimentation.

Though everyone's skin is different, sometimes what works for one person might just actually work for you, too. When there are hundreds to tens of thousands of verified reviews that tout similar success stories, it's a good sign you should try the product.

The following cleansers, masks, spot treatments, and tools have earned their places at the top of best-selling lists because they're just plain effective. Some are admittedly pricey investments, while others only cost less than $10, so whatever your budget, you'll be able to find a top-rated, best-selling acne product for you.

These 11 acne products have the support of tons of satisfied users across the Internet:

A $9 clay mask that promises the 'world's most powerful facial'

Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay, $9.99, available at Amazon

Amazon rating: 4.4 stars out of 18,300+ reviews

More than 12,000 five-star Amazon reviews, plus the glowing approval of Insider Picks reporter Mara Leighton, confirm that this affordable clay mask is no ordinary mask. Keep it on for five to 10 minutes and it draws out impurities to make your skin clearer and smoother.

A plant-based vitamin C serum

TruSkin Naturals Vitamin C Serum, $19.99, available at Amazon

Amazon rating: 4.3 stars out of 9,800+ reviews

Acne sufferers have noticed a marked reduction in the number of breakouts after consistent use of this gentle serum. The great part is that it's not only for acne — it also helps with fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots, and sun spots.

A gentle cream that harnesses the power of tea tree oil

Keeva Tea Tree Oil, $24.95, available at Amazon

Amazon rating: 4.4 stars out of 60+ reviews

If you have to deal with deep, painful cystic acne, you'll appreciate this tea tree oil treatment designed for sensitive skin. The tea tree oil dries out the gunk in your pimples without drying out your actual skin.

An award-winning drying lotion from a popular brand

Mario Badescu Drying Lotion, $17, available at Amazon and Nordstrom

Amazon rating: 4.2 stars out of 2,100+ reviews

The powerful drying lotion has been described as "magic" for zapping whiteheads overnight. Dab a bit on your whitehead and it should be gone in the morning. A little goes a long way and the bottle can last you half a year.

A face and body wash with 10% benzoyl peroxide

Humane Benzoyl Peroxide 10% Acne Treatment Body & Face Wash, $21.95, available at Amazon

Amazon rating: 5 stars out of 2,500+ reviews

Based on the before-and-after photos, this treatment proves benzoyl peroxide will almost always be a good solution to moderate and severe acne. However, it contains a high concentration of the medication, so if you have sensitive skin, you might want to steer clear.

A spot treatment containing bentonite clay and packed with essential oils

TreeActiv Cystic Acne Spot Treatment, $24.95, available at Amazon

Amazon rating: 4.3 stars out of 1,100+ reviews

Like the Aztec Healing Mask, TreeActiv's treatment contains bentonite clay to reduce inflammation and detoxify your skin. It also contains pink grapefruit essential oil and witch hazel to reduce swelling and balance oil production. Though the container is small, it's very effective.

A moisturizer that also actively prevents breakouts

Aveeno Clear Complexion Blemish Treatment Daily Moisturizer, $13.86, available at Amazon

Amazon rating: 4.2 stars out of 1,100+ reviews

Acne products tend to revolve around cleansers and spot treatments, but the moisturizer you layer on top also matters. This one has salicylic acid to treat acne but is still gentle enough for daily use. Meanwhile, the Total Soy Complex makes your face bright and radiant.

A cooling formula that works as both a cleanser and a mask

Neutrogena Clear Pore Facial Cleanser/Mask, $6.69, available at Target and Amazon

Target rating: 4.4 stars out of 155+ reviews

Whether you want to incorporate this into a daily routine or only slather it on at the end of the week, your face will feel clean and smooth afterwards. It contains 3.5% benzoyl peroxide to help kill the bacteria that causes acne.

A device that treats breakouts with light

Neutrogena Light Therapy Acne Spot Treatment, $26, available at Ulta

Target rating: 3.8 stars out of 300+ reviews

With red and blue light therapy, this device targets surface bacteria and inflammation deeper within the skin for a convenient and quick treatment.

An extra strength facial peel

Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Alpha Beta Daily Face Peel, $39.99 available at Amazon, and $88 from Sephora

Sephora rating: 4.5 stars out of 1,700+ reviews

Certainly a splurge purchase, it's nonetheless a product Insider Picks editor Sally Kaplan says is completely worth the cost. The peel, which consists of two pre-soaked pads you swipe over your face, is not only an anti-aging treatment, it's also great for preventing acne. With alpha and beta hydroxy acids, it reduces the presence of bacteria and dead skin buildup, thus preventing breakouts.

A mask made from dead sea mud

Majestic Pure Dead Sea Mud Mask, $11.98, available at Amazon

Amazon rating: 4.2 stars out of 1,660+ reviews

The salt and minerals in this mask act as an excellent exfoliator, helping to fight breakouts and reduce the appearance of psoriasis, eczema, blackheads, whiteheads, and acne. It feels thick and luxurious on your skin so you'll feel like you're at a spa.

How to calibrate your Google Maps app to give more accurate directions, on iPhone or Android

google maps phone

  • If your Google Maps app isn't giving you the most accurate results, you may want to calibrate it to ensure you get the right directions.
  • There are several methods you can use to calibrate Google Maps, including calibrating the compass and restarting your phone. But keep in mind that your options may be slightly limited if you have an iPhone.
  • Here's what you need to know to calibrate in Google Maps and thereby improve its accuracy.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

When it comes to getting directions, accuracy is everything. So when your GPS is having a hard time identifying your location, things can get frustrating — fast.

If you use Google Maps, there are ways to improve the accuracy: calibrating the compass so it points in the correct direction, for instance, or turning on high-accuracy mode on your Android phone.

There are several ways to get better directions and results while using the Google Maps app on your Android phone, as we detail below.

If you have an iPhone, however, the below methods won't work, so you should try restarting your phone or enabling Wi-Fi to improve the accuracy of your Google Maps app.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

iPhone 11 (From $699.99 at Best Buy)

Samsung Galaxy S10 (From $749.99 at Best Buy)

How to calibrate Google Maps with settings on an Android phone

Compass calibration

If you open your Google Maps app and see that the blue dot is pointing in the wrong direction, or is in the wrong location, calibration can help you get a more accurate reading. Here's how to do it on an Android phone:

1. Go into your Google Maps app, if it's not already open.

2. While holding your phone, move your hand in a figure eight motion — you should see the beam narrow as you go. Keep in mind it may take a few times for this to work.

Turning on high-accuracy mode

High-accuracy mode is a helpful tool in getting your Google Maps app up to speed. But keep in mind that this method only works if you have an Android:

3. Open your device's Settings app.

4. Tap "Location." Depending on your device, it may also be labeled as "Security and Location"

2 HOW TO CALIBRATE GOOGLE MAPS

5. Switch on the location setting, if necessary.

3 HOW TO CALIBRATE GOOGLE MAPS

6. Tap "Mode."

7. Select "High Accuracy."

4 HOW TO CALIBRATE GOOGLE MAPS

How to calibrate Google Maps on an iPhone or Android with other basic fixes

There aren't as many fancy tricks to fix Google Maps on an iPhone.

First, you should turn on Wi-Fi on your phone. You don't need to connect to a network, you just need to turn on the setting. On both iPhone and Android, turning on Wi-Fi will make Google Maps more accurate, as it scans nearby Wi-Fi signals to locate you.

If that doesn't work, try restarting your iPhone or Android. Your phone's GPS sensors may simply need to be rebooted. For more information on how to restart an iPhone, see our article, "How to restart and force-restart any iPhone model."

Finally, on an iPhone specifically, make sure that location services are turned on. To do this:

1. Open your Settings app and go to the "Privacy" tab.

2. At the top of the Privacy screen, tap "Location Services."

3. Make sure that the switch at the top of the next screen is flipped to the right, and is colored green. If it's not, tap it.

4. Scroll down to your list of apps until you find Google Maps, and tap on it.

5. On the next screen, select either "While Using the App" or "Always." This will allow the Google Maps app to access your precise location faster.

6 owners of tiny homes reveal how much they spend each month on housing

tiny house orlando lakefront

  • Residents in the Orlando Lakefront tiny house community typically spend less than $1,000 per month on home-related expenses.
  • Elizabeth Silva spends just $600 per month on her housing expenses, which include rent, internet, utilities, and insurance.
  • Meanwhile, Mickie Boehm spends $1,000 per month on the same expenses.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Tiny homes can cost anywhere from $8,000 to $150,000 to build, which is far less than the cost of the average standard size home in the US. And the savings don't stop there.

Living in — and maintaining— a tiny home is typically less expensive, as well. Nobody knows this better than the residents of Orlando Lakefront, a tiny house community in Florida. In fact, the owner of the community, Adam Money, told Business Insider that people who live in tiny houses typically save $2,000 a month.

After speaking with six homeowners in the community, it's clear that most spend less than $1,000 on expenses every month. Keep reading to see how their expenses break down.

Mickie Boehm — who has lived in a 250-square-foot tiny house with her husband since July 2018 — spends about $1,000 per month on expenses.

Boehm spent $68,000 building her tiny house. She also received $12,000 worth of upgrades for appearing on "Tiny House Nation." Once her house was completed, she had to pay a one-time fee of $200 upfront to join the waitlist at Orlando Lakefront to ensure a spot in the community.

Cost of lot: $450 per month

Utilities: $50 per month

Insurance: $100 per month

Groceries: $400 per month

Total: $1,000 per month

Amanda Burger lives in her 26-foot-long tiny house with two small children. She spends almost $1,000 per month on expenses.

Burger paid $16,000 to have a contractor build the frame of her house. She decided to finish the rest herself. In the end, she spent $40,000 on her tiny house and paid the $200 to ensure a spot at the Orlando Lakefront.

Cost of lot: $500 per month

Utilities: $40 per month

Insurance: $50 per month

Groceries: $400 per month

Total: $990 per month

DJ Gilley has lived in her 220-square-foot home since February 2019 and spends about $745 per month on expenses.

Gilley spent $65,000 on her tiny house, which her son built. She had to pay three months of rent at Orlando Lakefront before her home was even finished because Gilley did not want to lose her spot in the community.

Cost of lot: $650 per month

Utilities: $50 per month

Internet: $45 per month

Total: $745 per month

Misty Gilley spends about $645 per month on expenses related to her 240-square-foot home.

Gilley initially spent $40,000 on the frame of her tiny house, but she quickly learned her house was built all wrong. Fixing the plumbing, wiring, and flooring cost her another $40,000, so she spent $80,000 and counting on her tiny house.

Cost of lot: $550 per month

Utilities: $50 per month

Internet: $45 per month

Total: $645 per month

Elizabeth Silva has lived in her 170-square-foot tiny house since August 2019 and spends about $640 per month on expenses.

Silva spent $50,000 on her home and then paid an additional $200 to get on the Orlando Lakefront waitlist to ensure a spot in the community.

Cost of lot: $450 per month

Internet: $66 per month

Utilities: $40 per month

Insurance: $83 per month

Total: $639 per month

Li-Mor Raviv's 320-square-foot home is still being built, but her monthly expenses are already $600.

Raviv's tiny home is behind construction schedule, so she has been paying rent at Orlando Lakefront for a month without actually living there. The house itself is costing over $70,000, plus she had to pay the $200 waitlist fee.

Cost of lot: $600

Total so far: $600

Miranda Kerr said she and Evan Spiegel mop their floors with eucalyptus oil and use a filter to set the pH of their water, and it shows just how seriously the wealthy take wellness

evan spiegel miranda kerr

  • In a recent interview with NewBeauty magazine's Liz Ritter, supermodel Miranda Kerr said she grew up with "the philosophy that health was wealth."
  • She said that she and her husband, Snap CEO Evan Spiegel, practice that philosophy by mopping the floors of their $12 million home with hot water and eucalyptus oil and turning off almost all the electricity in the home at night.
  • Kerr's comments show just how seriously the wealthy view wellness and further solidify wellness as a status symbol.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Supermodel Miranda Kerr and Snap CEO Evan Spiegel have a combined estimated net worth of nearly $3.75 billion.

Kerr, who now runs her own organic skincare company, is estimated to have a net worth of a cool $45 million. Her husband, Spiegel, is one of three self-made billionaires in the world under the age of 30, according to Forbes.

In 2016, Kerr and Spiegel bought a $12 million Los Angeles mansion together, but the power couple also exercises their wealth by prioritizing health and wellness.

In an interview for the summer edition of NewBeauty magazine that's currently making waves on Twitter, Kerr said she was always interested in health and wellness: "I grew up that way — there was always the philosophy that health was wealth. I grew up in a tiny country town in Australia called Gunnedah in a family that was, and still is, very health-conscious."

And if the interview is any indication, she takes her household's health seriously indeed. Kerr told NewBeauty she likes picking the pH of their water ("You don't want to be going to alkaline because you do need a little stomach acid to digest your food"); diffusing essential oils throughout the house; and mopping the floors with hot water and eucalyptus oil ("It's good for the wood and it's antibacterial. It also smells really nice").

The couple goes as far as turning off the power in their home at night, eliminating WiFi and electricity during sleeping hours. As Business Insider's Nick Bastone previously reported, they also limit their 7-year-old's time in front of screens, a practice many Silicon Valley parents are now favoring.

Kerr also noted in the interview that she has an electromagnetic field detector, and had their home inspected by a professional who looks for EMF waves. The World Health Organization has deemed this health practice excessive, concluding that "current evidence does not confirm the existence of any health consequences from exposure to low level electromagnetic fields."

Representatives for Kerr didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider on the couple's wellness practices.

Wellness is the ultimate status symbol in 2019

As Business Insider's Hillary Hoffower previously reported, "Luxury goods are out, and luxury lifestyles are in." These lifestyles are largely marked by discreet wealth: Rather than spending money on fancy cars and logo-ridden accessories, the wealthy are investing in education, security, and wellness.

Spiegel and Kerr are far from the only wealthy Silicon Valley residents who are known to have extreme habits when it comes to health, wellness, and diet.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey is said to eat only one meal a day during the week and to abstain from eating almost all weekend, only eating a meal on Sunday evening. Tesla founder Elon Musk is said to work out twice a day. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg avoids cluttering his thoughts by wearing the same outfit of jeans, sneakers, and a gray T-shirt every single day.

These health practices all fit into the trend of health serving as a status symbol, and it doesn't stop at Silicon Valley. Millennials are pouring their money into expensive gym memberships and dishing out serious cash for boutique fitness classes.

Meanwhile, developers too, are taking note: New luxury apartment buildings across the US are foregoing flashy amenities like car-carrying elevators and instead focusing on amenities that promote healthy lifestyles, like outdoor yoga decks, private parks, and so-called tranquility gardens.

So, it happened again — you clicked on a YouTube video intending to watch that one clip of a standup routine, and suddenly it's 45 minutes later and you're watching the 23rd video delivered to you via YouTube autoplay.

The autoplay feature on YouTube will automatically play a new video after the one you're watching is over, leading you down a perpetual rabbit hole of recommendations and nonstop content. Sometimes, this might be a good way to discover new videos, but it can also suggest videos you don't want to watch.

Whether a time thief or an annoyance, YouTube's autoplay feature is often best switched off.

Fortunately, that's easy to do on a computer and on the mobile app. Here's how to do it.

How to turn off autoplay on YouTube on your computer

Turning off YouTube autoplay on a desktop or laptop could not be easier.

While you are watching a video, click on the blue dot beside the word "AUTOPLAY" above the column of video thumbnail images on the right side of the screen.

You can always click the gray dot to turn autoplay back on.

How to turn off autoplay on YouTube on your mobile device

To turn off autoplay in the YouTube mobile app, tap on your profile image (or your avatar) in the top right corner of the screen.

Then hit "Settings," and finally, on the next menu, scroll down and tap the slider beside the words "Autoplay next video."

The best men's watches under $100

$

0
  • A nice watch is an essential accessory for men, but that doesn't mean you have to spend big bucks to look good.
  • Even on a tight budget, you can buy just about any desirable watch style, so we rounded up eight styles for under $100.
  • Our top picks include watches from MVMT, Timex, Casio, Invicta, and more.

If there's one accessory every man needs to own, it's a wristwatch. The right watch should be functional and attractive — a piece that adds to the wearer's style.

While certain brands like Rolex and Breitling are often used as a symbol of status, it's still possible to achieve a sophisticated look without paying high-end prices. Most people can't afford or are simply unwilling to spend thousands of dollars on a watch, but that doesn't mean it's impossible to find a nice timepiece.

Whether your taste in watches is minimal or more complex, you can find the right timepiece on any budget — even for under $100. Brands like Timex, Invicta, Nixon, and MVMT, just to name a few, all offer beautiful watches at affordable prices.

For those looking to save money without sacrificing quality, we rounded up eight of the best watches you can buy for less than $100 right now.

Here are the best men's watches under $100:

The best gold-tone watch under $100

The all-gold wristwatch will forever be a classic look, and the Nixon Time Teller is a solid way to achieve it without breaking the bank.

Featuring a classic round face and bracelet design, the Nixon Time Teller is a great choice is people looking for a gold-toned watch. The watch is kept simple with hour markers and Nixon branding at 3 o'clock. If you're interested in a gold watch with a black, white, blue, dark blue, or green face, you'll also find them available for less than $100 on Amazon.

Regardless of which color combination you decide on, the stainless steel watch uses a 37 mm case, which is ideal for guys who prefer watches that aren't too big and gaudy. At the same time, if you have a large wrist, you might want a slightly bigger watch face to make an adequate statement.

A few millimeters can make a huge difference in the aesthetics of a watch, so keep that in mind when shopping.

Pros: Classic and simple design, water-resistant up to 330 feet, different watch face colors available.

Cons: 37 mm case is on the smaller side of watches

The best silver-tone watch under $100

Built for the outdoors, the Timex Expedition Ranger features a brushed stainless steel case, side crown protectors, and a stainless steel bracelet that can handle rough everyday wear.

The Timex Expedition Ranger's brushed stainless steel case and bracelet are contrasted by a black bezel and dial. With Arabic numerals at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock and hour and minute markers in between, the display is very easy to read. Small touches like the red airplane second hand and date display make the watch equally unique and useful.

Its 43 mm case is substantial, but not ridiculously large. The side crown protectors and water-resistant case make the watch just as durable as it is stylish. You'll want to wear it everywhere from the outdoors to in the office.

The only attribute I could find that could be a downside for some is that the Time Expedition Ranger's bezel does not rotate, meaning it's there strictly for aesthetics. If you plan to use your the bezel for measuring diving times, regatta races, or alternate time zones, this isn't the watch for you.

Pros: Date display, Indiglo light-up dial, water-resistant up to 50 meters

Cons: Bezel does not rotate

The best minimalist watch under $100

Sometimes less is more. The Calvin Klein Minimal is kept, well, minimal with only CK branding and the hour and minute hands on the face.

If intricate designs with subdials, detailed bezels, and large hands are not your cup of tea, this Calvin Klein watch can elevate your style without being too over the top. The minimalist design features a round silver-tone case and dial with a brown leather strap.

Doing away with usual inclusions like hour markers and a second hand, the only details on the watch are Calvin Klein branding.

While the design is undoubtedly clean and simple, the minimalism means that it can be hard to read if you're used to telling time with hour and minute markers.

Pros: Swiss made, minimal design, multiple colors available

Cons: If you need an easy-to-read watch, the lack of a second hand and hour and minute markers makes it more difficult to read

The best smartwatch under $100

If you think owning a smartwatch means spending hundreds, you are wrong. This Apple Watch doppelgänger has key features for activity tracking, calorie counting, and more.

The latest Apple Watch starts at $400, but unless you're a diehard brand loyalist, there may not be a reason to drop that much on a watch that tells time and tracks your activity. At $80, the Amazfit Bip smartwatch has many features like fitness, heart rate, and sleep tracking, and the ability to display app, phone call, and text notifications from your smartphone.

Another super impressive attribute is the long battery life. Amazfit rates the watch's battery life at up to 30 days on a single 2.5-hour charge, although it could be based less on how much you use it. In comparison to the Apple Watch, which is rated at 18 hours on a full charge, you'll get a lot more wear in between charges with the Amazfit Bip.

Insider Picks reporter Connie Chen reviewed the watch and was blown away by how much the watch does for so little money. You can read her full review here.

Pros: 1.28-inch screen, long battery life, step counter, calorie counter, sleep tracker, displays smartphone notifications, multiple colors available, dust- and water-resistant

Cons: Considering the price, there aren't any cons. However, if you're not on a budget, there are more sophisticated but pricier smartwatches available.

The best diver's watch under $100

With a strikingly similar look to the popular Rolex Submariner, the Invicta Pro Diver delivers the undeniable style and functionality of a diver's watch for a fraction of the cost.

As my personal favorite watch on this list, the Invicta Pro Diver is a lot of watch for the money. It features an iconic two-tone diver aesthetic that's nearly identical to the Rolex Submariner, which will cost you a cool $14,000 to buy on Jomashop.

This is also a wonderful choice because it features a Swiss automatic movement with a 41-hour power reserve, while every other watch on the list is battery powered. The automatic movement means you'll never have to put a battery in it to keep the time — simply wind it up and then let the motion of your wrist fill the power reserve.

In terms of using the Pro Diver for actually diving, it's fully functional. The watch has a unidirectional bezel, which can be used for accurately recording dive times and displaying different time zones, and is water-resistant up to 660 feet.

It's worth noting that unidirectional bezels rotate in one direction strictly for safety and shouldn't be thought of as inferior to a bidirectional bezel. If for any reason the bezel is accidentally moved, it will display less time rather than more time, with the latter being a potentially crucial error while scuba diving.

Pros: Magnified date display, 18k gold-plated, water-resistant up to 660 feet, unidirectional bezel, looks almost identical to the Rolex Submariner, Swiss automatic movement

Cons: None. At $84 for 18k gold-plated automatic watch with a timeless two-tone diver design, there's nothing to complain about here.

The best sports watch under $100

Rugged, water-resistant, and full of useful timekeeping features — the G-Shock DW6900 is built to handle the most intense workouts and sports activities.

Trusted by military personnel, law enforcement, athletes, and outdoorsmen, G-Shock is the go-to brand for people who require a truly durable watch. While many G-Shocks can be had for less than $100, the DW6900 model is my top choice.

The main digital display shows the day, date, and time, and the top of the display has three chronograph dials for seconds, minutes, and hours. Just below the dial is a G button for illumination. Other useful features include an alarm with a buzzer sound and screen flashes.

The resin band and case make it very durable — you won't have to worry about the exterior of the watch getting dirty or wearing away. I personally own several G-Shock watches that I purchased about a decade ago, and I've had zero issues with functionality. As long as there's a good battery in the watch, it will keep on working.

Pros: Shock-resistant, water-resistant up to 200 meters, afterglow backlight, digital display, flash and buzzer alarms, stopwatch

Cons: Too sporty to wear with some casual and formal looks

The best leather band watch under $100

The MVMT Classic is a clean and simple design that looks good on any wrist — and with plenty of color combinations to choose from, you won't have a problem picking one out.

Founded in 2013, MVMT is a newcomer watchmaker, but its ability to balance modern aesthetics with classic styling while maintaining fair prices makes it one of our favorite watch brands.

If you're looking for a watch with a nice leather band opposed to a metal bracelet, the MVTM Classic 45 mm is a fine choice. It features a 100% genuine leather band and a simple case and dial setup that doubles as great second choice for the minimalist watch wearer.

This White Tan watch and a few other styles are priced at $95, but if you can save up a few more dollars, you can find a lot of other leather band options for $110.

Pros: Classic design, date display, multiple colors available, 100% genuine leather band, interchangeable bands available, water-resistant up to 30 meters

Cons: Some options cost more than $100

The best novelty watch under $100

Let's be honest: Smartphones have made calculator watches obsolete, but they will always be a cool piece of nostalgia from the '70s and '80s.

As the world's first glimpse at modern smartwatches, the Casio Calculator Watch was once a technological marvel in the '70s. Today, the calculator watch is largely obsolete, but it makes this list because of its nostalgic look and feel.

At $19.22, you should buy it in addition to the watch you actually plan to wear on a daily basis simply for the cool factor — and if you pick the right watch, you'll likely still spend under $100 on them combined.

Whether the Casio Calculator watch brings you back to when you were the coolest kid in high school algebra crunching numbers right on your wrist or you're looking for a watch that's a conversation starter, this will do the trick. Along with doing basic math like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, the watch has a day display, alarm clock, and stopwatch function.

Pros: 8-digit calculator, alarm features, luminous backlight, water-resistant up to 165 feet

Cons: Outdated technology that you probably won't use

An adventure travel company is opening an igloo hotel at the North Pole, but it'll cost you $100,000 to stay there. Here's a look at the world's northernmost hotel.

Luxury Action North Pole 2016 64

  • Travel company Luxury Action, based in the Arctic and Nordic region, is offering a unique pop-up hotel experience: spending the night in a heated glass "igloo" at the North Pole.
  • The trip can only be taken in April, when the Arctic is accessible by helicopter.
  • At other times of the year, the igloos can be set up elsewhere on nearby Svalbard's glacier.
  • But the adventure is neither for the faint of heart, nor the non-wealthy: The North Pole package starts at 95,000 euros (or about $105,000) per person.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Starting in 2020, Scandinavian travel company Luxury Action will be offering a high-end, high-cost adventure: spending the night at the North Pole in a glass-ceilinged igloo.

The northernmost point in the world is inhospitable and inaccessible during most of the year, so the "North Pole Igloos" experience will only be available in April. The heated glass igloos, tested in "extreme arctic weather conditions," take glamping to an entirely new level — they come complete with their own toilets, and the campsite has a camp manager, arctic wilderness guide, personal chef services, and a security team.

Read more: Extreme glamping: Luxury yurts, covered wagons with air conditioning, and $3 million RVs prove there's still a market for high-end outdoorsy adventures

Of course, a trip like this doesn't come cheap. You'll have to shell out some serious cash to become one of the relatively few visitors to the Arctic.

Read on to learn more about this one-of-a-kind travel experience.

The company promises "high-end experiences and expeditions across the Arctic, Lapland, Finland, and the rest of the Nordic region, including Greenland and even the North Pole."

The igloo hotel is set to launch in 2020 and will consist of 10 heated, igloo-shaped domes that allow visitors to sleep outside in the middle of the Arctic.

Since the world's northernmost point is inaccessible during most of the year, the hotel will only be open for one month: April.

CNN reports that the North Pole can be reached by helicopter in April and by ship in June and July.

Source: Luxury Action

Janne Honkanen, the CEO and founder of Luxury Action, told Business Insider that the igloo accommodations, with en suite toilets and glass ceiling roofs, have been tested to ensure their safety in "extreme arctic weather conditions."

Source: Luxury Action

"It is movable and sustainable, but still a little extreme. Depending on weather conditions, we move the heated glass igloos to the [safest] places around the arctic glacier," Honkanen said.

Source: Luxury Action

But it doesn't come cheap: The North Pole igloo set-up starts at 95,000 euros (or about $105,000) per person.

Source: Luxury Action

This includes a two-night stay at a hotel in Svalbard (an archipelago roughly midway between mainland Norway and the North Pole and one of the last hospitable areas between the two), flights and transportation between Svalbard and the North Pole, a single night in a North Pole igloo, all meals, security, and a tour guide.

Honkanen told CNN that guests will take a two-hour helicopter ride to a North Pole ice camp from Svalbard after their two nights in the frontier town. From there, Luxury Action arranges transportation to the spot on the glacier where the igloos are set up.

Source: Luxury Action

Outside of April, the igloos can be set up elsewhere around the Arctic glacier. Those prices start at 48,000 euros (or about $52,700) per person for a three-night stay.

Source: Luxury Action

According to CNN, only around 1,000 people make the Arctic trek to the North Pole annually — and it's not exactly a walk in the park.

Source: CNN

Luxury Action is aiming to make the once-in-a-lifetime excursion as relatively easy (and luxurious) as possible for travelers. "We provide all of the equipment," Honkanen told CNN. "But you definitely need to have the spirit of an explorer or scientist."

Source: CNN

Honkanen, who says that the pop-up hotel is fully sustainable and poses no threat to the area, also hopes that travelers will help spread the word about the effects of climate change on the Arctic environment.

"We're not just providing the experience, we want to spread the word on what's happening," he told CNN. "How the climate crisis affects local culture, local food, and the Arctic animals. We see the effects first hand. It's transformative travel. We make a connection with the local people [in Svalbard]."

How to change your country in the Google Play Store on an Android phone, if you've moved to a new country

pixel 3 xl google play store

Moving to a new country is exciting and scary. It involves a lot of work to adapt, and use technology in a way that's familiar and useful to you. Changing your Google Play Store country can be one way to make the transition a little bit easier.

Before you get started, be aware that you can only add a new country to your account if you're actually in that country. You can also only change your country in Google Play once per year, and any balance you have in one country won't be carried over to the next — so you won't have access to that balance for at least a full year.

In other words, if you're moving to another country for a long time, changing your country in the Play Store is a good move. But if you're just hopping over for a short vacation, it's not a good idea.

Plus, the content within the Google Play Store may vary by country, so you may want to check whether your favorite apps are available and look for alternatives, if necessary.

With that in mind, here's how to change your Google Play Store country.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Samsung Galaxy S10 (From $749.99 at Best Buy)

How to change the country in Google Play Store

Before you can change the country, you have to add that country to your account. Here's how:

1. Open the Google Play Store app.

2. Tap the three stacked lines in the upper-left corner of the screen to get into the menu.

1 HOW TO CHANGE COUNTRY GOOGLE PLAY STORE

3. Select "Account."

2 HOW TO CHANGE COUNTRY GOOGLE PLAY STORE

4. Tap "Country and Profiles."

5. Tap the country that you want to add to your account.

6. Follow the directions and add a payment method — keep in mind that the first payment method you enter must be based within that new country for this to work.

After you've done this, Google Play Store will automatically switch over to your new country. Just be aware that it can take up to 24 hours for this action to be processed.

After a year elapses, you'll be able to switch between accounts again fairly easily. To do that, go back into the Google Play Store menu, which is accessed via the three stacked lines. Next, tap "Account" and then "Country and Profiles." Then tap the country you want to use for the next year.

If you're having a hard time with adding the country, or switching between accounts, try clearing your device's cache and data, or updating the Google Play Store app, to get things back on track.

Peloton prices its IPO at the top of its range, raking in $1.2 billion and giving it a $8.2 billion value (PTON)

Fitness equipment maker Peloton found a healthy demand for its initial public offering.

The company priced its shares at $29 a piece Wednesday, it said in a press release. That's at the top of the range it previously forecast and will translate into $1.3 billion in cash that it will raise in the offering. That price will give the company a valuation of around $8.2 billion, about double the valuation it fetched in its last private funding round one year ago.

The company expects its shares to begin trading on the Nasdaq on Thursday under the symbol PTON.

Peloton makes stationary bikes and treadmills equipped with interactive displays. It also offers a subscription video service that streams exercise classes to its exercise equipment.

The company has quickly built up a passionate customer base and seen its sales soar. But it's also posted mounting losses and faces a $300 million lawsuit from top recording artists who allege that it used their songs without permission.

Read this: Peloton, the fitness startup with a cultlike following, could go public at an $8 billion valuation. Insiders reveal why its business seems set to explode.

Peloton's successful IPO stands in sharp contrast to WeWork's failed effort earlier this month to go public. The commercial real-estate company, which a few weeks ago had the highest value of any startup, postponed its offering in the face of Wall Street resistance. It ousted its CEO earlier this week.

NOW WATCH: Jeff Bezos is worth over $160 billion — here's how the world's richest man makes and spends his money

This personalized hair-care startup makes shampoo and conditioner for your specific hair needs and goals — and it actually works

prose personalized shampoo

  • Most hair-care options on the market aren't fully catered to your specific hair needs and goals.
  • The made-to-order shampoo, conditioner, and hair masks (from $25) from Prose are.
  • These effective, safe, and personalized hair-care products are made possible through its online quiz and feedback platform, which you can learn more about below.
  • I went through the process and truthfully, I didn't love my first formulation. However, after giving Prose a second try and tweaking my formulation, I'm convinced of the power of personalization.

Friends can share secrets, food, and maybe if they're lucky, even jeans a la "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants." One thing my friends and I can't really share is shampoo.

With all the different types of hair out there, a one-size-fits-all hair-care product is surely a myth. What makes my medium-thick, mostly straight hair soft, shiny, and strong may have a different effect on my friend's coarse and wavy hair.

And outside of hair type, many hair-care products fail to consider external factors like environment and stress levels. Increasing awareness about ingredient safety is also causing people to doubt their current shampoo and conditioner.

Personalization is proving to be a successful service as people seek solutions that are fully, not just "kind of" or "mostly" catered to their needs. In the world of hair, Prose is the company from which to buy your personalized hair-care products.

The founders of Prose took their experiences in marketing, digital strategy, and R&D roles at consumer product companies like Procter & Gamble and L'Oréal to help define Prose's data-driven and ingredient-centric business model.

With dozens of different data points and high-quality, highly effective ingredients at its disposal, it can create a unique formulation suited to your hair type, hair goals, lifestyle, and environment, starting at $25 a bottle.

If you're curious about how the process works and whether Prose's personalized shampoo and conditioner really work, read on. You can try it for yourself at the link below. As I discovered myself, the company will follow through on its 100% satisfaction guarantee to make sure you have the best personalized hair-care experience.

To create your Prose formulation, start with the hair quiz.

Most of the questions revolve around your hair type and hair care habits — nothing too surprising here. You'll also be asked about your diet, stress levels, and physical activity, which are all factors that can affect hair health.

It even takes into account where you live.

Every city experiences different levels of UV, pollution, humidity, and wind. The water you drink out of the tap and that you wash your hair with matters, too.

For the most part, the answers to these questions will determine what goes into your formulation. One feature you do have control of is the fragrance of your Prose products.

Prose makes seven fragrances in total, but offers only its signature fragrance plus two others depending on your quiz results. You can also go fragrance-free. I got the Signature and loved its fresh, floral scent that lingered on my hair. Here are all the fragrance options I got:

  1. Signature (violet leaf, peony, blue iris)
  2. Napoli (lemon, neroli, orange blossom)
  3. Botanical (eucalyptus, lavender, rosemary)

With your hair profile and fragrance choice in hand, Prose makes your products to order in its NYC lab.

Prose currently offers three products: a hair mask, shampoo, and conditioner. You don't have to get all three, and you can order more than one bottle of any product when you check out.

The mask lasts up to 10 weeks while the shampoo and conditioner last six to eight weeks. Each product's price will depend on your unique combination of ingredients, but start at $25.

You can also subscribe to automatic shipments (every one, two, or three months) for 20% off your order.

Prose selects from a collection of over 75 natural ingredients to make your formulation.

Here's a sampling of a few of those ingredients and what they do:

  • Argan, sacha yushi, and jojoba oils to nourish the hair
  • Pea sprout extract to stimulate growth
  • Oat lipid and sunflower seed extract to protect color

Formulations are always free of parabens, sulfates, mineral oil, dye, and GMOs. You can also specify if you want it to be vegan, gluten-free, and/or silicone-free.

Given the highly personalized nature of the service, I had high expectations for my Prose shampoo and conditioner, but they actually fell flat the first time around.

Though the shampoo and conditioner smelled amazing, my hair felt limp every time I used them. I was disappointed, so I took advantage of Prose's 100% satisfaction guarantee policy, which lets you give feedback on your first formulation and offers a reformulation, free of charge.

I'm glad I did, because my new Prose products were a hit. My hair was less oily, it felt stronger and smoother, and it boasted a healthy shine.

There's a clear difference between the hair-care products from Prose and the generic, catch-all ones I had been using — as there should be, considering Prose uses natural ingredients and personalized insights to treat your hair's specific needs.

You can expect to pay at least double what you're probably used to paying for shampoo and conditioner from a drug store. There's certainly a price to pay for personalization, but Prose's high-quality, better-for-your-hair formulations make the higher cost worth it.
