How to hide text messages on a Samsung Galaxy S10, and lock your Messages app with a password

$

Galaxy S10 5G

  • You can hide incoming text messages on your Samsung Galaxy S10 by changing the Notifications preferences in the Settings app, which will stop messages from appearing on your lock screen.
  • You can also install a third-party app on your Galaxy S10 that locks your apps with a password or pattern lock, meaning only you can open them. This effectively hides your text messages even if someone gains access to your unlocked phone.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Text messages are among the most private information on your phone, so you might want to add an extra layer of privacy to your Messages app.

There are two ways to hide messages on the Galaxy S10: You can disable text message preview notifications on your lock screen, and you can hide your Messages app entirely, making it impossible for someone who has access to your Galaxy S10 to browse your messages.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Samsung Galaxy S10 (From $899.99 at Best Buy)

How to hide text messages on your Samsung Galaxy S10

Hide message preview notifications on the lock screen

By default, whenever you receive a text message, a notification for the message will appear on your lock screen. This means that anyone who can see your screen can see your messages.

Luckily, you can disable these message previews.

1. Start the Settings app.

2. Tap "Lock Screen."

3. Tap "Notifications."

hide 1

4. If you want to disable all notifications, swipe the button at the top of the screen to the left to turn the feature off.

5. If you want to continue to get notifications, but not display the content of the notification, turn on "Hide Content" by swiping its button to the right. If you do this, you'll know when you get new text messages, but the message itself will be hidden, and you'll need to open the app to read it.

hide 2

Hide the Messages app entirely using a third-party app

There was a time when it was possible to install a third-party app on Android phones that could hide individual text messages, but don't waste your time looking for it anymore. Changes to Google's guidelines for app permissions means apps can no longer access contacts or messages.

You can hide the entire Messages app, though, and protect it with a security feature like a passcode.

There are several apps in the Google Play store which can hide apps. An app called AppLock, for example, can lock most apps and prevent anyone but you from opening them.

1. Install AppLock from the Google Play store and open it.

2. When requested, create a pattern lock that the app will use to authenticate you when you try to start locked apps.

3. In the General section of the app, tap "Messages" to lock it with a pattern lock.

hide 3

Now, when you try to run the Messages app, you'll need to draw the pattern lock, or the app and all of its messages will remain hidden.

iPhone

  • You can dial an international number on your iPhone in a few easy steps.
  • To dial international on an iPhone, you'll need to know the country code for the number you're trying to dial.
  • You'll need to dial a "+" before you start dialing an international number, which you can access by pressing and holding the 0 key.
  • After that, simply type the country's code on the keypad in the Phone app, followed by the international number you're trying to dial, and then press the green phone icon to make the call.
  • Calling international numbers on your iPhone will likely incur extra charges — check with your mobile provider for rates.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

While most of us opt for texting or email to keep in touch with friends, family, and colleagues, sometimes there's just no substitute for picking up the phone and hearing the person's voice on the other end of the line.

This is especially true when you're in different countries, when actually making a phone call can make the distance between two people feel a lot smaller.

Thankfully, making calls to people overseas couldn't be easier these days, especially if you have an iPhone. Dialing an international number on your device only takes a few seconds and will have you connected in no time.

Note that fees for international calling will vary depending on your carrier and individual phone plan. Check with your provider to make sure you're not incurring extra fees by making a call.

That said, here's how to dial an international number on an iPhone.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

iPhone XS (From $999.99 at Best Buy)

How to dial international numbers on your iPhone

1. Open the Phone app on your iPhone, which looks like a white telephone receiver in a green box.

2. Tap the Keypad button to access the screen on which you can enter the number you're calling.

3. To make an international call, press + before you begin dialing the number. You can do this easily by pressing and holding the 0 key until the + appears.

4. Add the relevant country code for the number you're calling, followed by the local number. For instance, if you're calling someone in the UK, you'll type 0(+),  44, and then the local number.

IMG_8378.PNG

5. Press the green call button when you've entered the entire number to begin the call.

How to save an international number on your iPhone for quick dialing

It should be noted that if the international number is one you'll be dialing a lot, you can save this number as well as the country calling code as a contact in your phone.

To do so, simply open the Phone app after the call and then tap Recents to access your recent calls. Tap the info button next to the number you wish to save, then tap Create New Contact, and enter the person's information.

For more information, read our article, "How to add contacts to your iPhone in 3 different ways."

Meet Bombas, the cult-favorite sock startup that's donated 25 million pairs to homeless shelters since launching in 2013

19396852_1416396505108706_3405392068166469652_n

  • Cult-favorite sock startup Bombas was founded to address the fact that socks are the #1 most requested donation item in homeless shelters.
  • Its socks are the end result of two years of obsessive research and development.
  • They solve common annoyances with unique engineering: a honeycomb support system for more arch support, a blister tab on ankle socks, a Y-stitched heel, and "invisitoe" — (a hand-linked seam that eliminates the bump that otherwise runs across the toes of socks).
  • Every time you buy a pair of Bombas socks, the company gives a pair to someone in need.
  • To date, Bombas has donated nearly 25 million pairs of socks.

Socks are the Achilles heel of a wardrobe. When they malfunction (trap heat, slip down, give you nasty blisters) there are few irritants that can compete in killing your mood or performance faster. On the other hand, you're not exactly inspired to compose sonnets in their honor when they perform correctly.

But when it comes to the basics, comfort is key. And if you're shopping with comfort in mind, you'd do well to keep an eye out for the cult-favorite sock startup Bombas. We cover a lot of companies at Insider Picks, but this is one we keep coming back to for everything from gym socks to dress socks.

Founded in 2013 by David Heath and Randy Goldberg, Bombas socks are meant to solve two issues simultaneously: consumers not having socks that bridge the gap between cheap multi-packs and high-end niche technicals, and homeless shelters having a shortage of sock donations.

Coming to the sock market as complete outsiders, Heath and Goldberg approached the basic as regular consumers first, identifying their own pain points and then using their irregularly expansive resources to engineer solutions.

As a result, Bombas socks are undeniably "other" in the best way possible.Ankle socks have blister tabs; calf socks have a carefully balanced tension level, or "stay-up technology"; and no-shows use a combination of stay-put heel grips and contour seam construction to stay in place. The general collection benefits universally from similar updates. In order to provide more arch support, the company has replicated the strong natural structure of the honeycomb across the mid-foot to distribute pressure evenly. The Y-stitched heel creates a natural cupping around your heel instead of the straight stitch typically used. The footbed is reinforced but not overly thick to make them more supportive and longer-lasting.

bombas socks tech

And for every pair of socks you purchase, Bombas donates another pair to someone in need. To date, the company is responsible for gifting nearly 25 million pairs of socks, all of which are specially designed to make the lives of the homeless at least a little bit more comfortable.

"We put as much thought and care into the production of the donation sock as well." Goldberg told Business Insider. "In working with giving partners to engineer a sock that would specifically meet the needs of the homeless, we designed the sock to be darker to avoid less visible wear and tear, added an anti-microbial treatment to prevent the growth of odor and fungus since these socks are not washed as frequently, and added reinforced seams for great durability, ensuring a longer lifespan."

Though a pair of Bombas socks will set you back further than a cheap multi-pack at Target will (ankle socks go for about $12), they'll last you longer, feel better during that lifespan, and far exceed the rather dismal expectations you've set for socks up until now. If you're sick of ending runs with irritation and chafing along the ankle, Bombas are worth the few extra bucks.

And if you don't love them, the startup has the sort of bulletproof customer guarantee that has grown increasingly rare. As a part of standing next to their product 100%, Bombas upholds a "no matter what, no questions asked, no holds barred, no ifs, no ands, no buts" happiness guarantee. "If you have a problem, we will solve it. Refund it. Send you new socks. Whatever it takes."

You can find a full range of Bombas socks from knee highs to dress socks in classic colors and adventurous colorways now for both men and women alike — each with the inventive thoughtfulness and attention to detail and comfort that have made them such a sensation online. If you're looking for a way to instantly improve the comfort of everyday life almost unconsciously, you should take a chance on Bombas. Plus, it doesn't hurt that the company remains one of the best examples of a business with positive impact; you get the best socks you've ever worn for a price that won't break the bank, and your purchase helps improve the lives of someone else at the most basic and necessary level. In other words, everybody wins.

Millennials aren't buying baby boomers' ranches. In Montana and Arizona, 2 luxury ranches have been sitting on the market for over a year — take a look inside the $50 million package.

montana ranch

  • Luxury ranches for sale are piling up out west, as millennials aren't interested in buying baby boomers' sprawling ranches, Business Insider's Hillary Hoffower previously reported.
  • Two ranches in Montana and Arizona are for sale as a set for $50 million — and they've been sitting on the market for over a year.
  • Together, the ranches span about 7,100 acres and include a swimming pool and sauna, an art museum, shooting ranges, tennis courts, and world-class equestrian facilities.
  • The owners say they want the buyer to be able to combine a modern Western lifestyle in Scottsdale with an "Old West" lifestyle in Montana.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

For Morton Fleischer, "the cowboy is the icon of America."

That's why he and his wife, Donna, set out to create the ultimate Western lifestyle for themselves by building two ranches: one in Arizona and one in Montana. They're for sale as a set for $50 million.

"The ranches are beautiful, but when you combine them, we're combining a modern Western lifestyle [in Arizona]... with an 'Old West' lifestyle in Montana," Morton told Business Insider in 2018, when the ranches were first listed. "Montana is essentially very much like the 'Old West' was, and Scottsdale's the 'New West.' When you combine them, you can live both lifestyles."

But the younger generation doesn't seem to be as interested in the ranch lifestyle.

Millennials aren't buying baby boomers' sprawling ranches, leaving a glut of luxury ranches for sale out west, as Business Insider's Hillary Hoffower previously reported.

The two ranches the Fleischers are selling, which span about 7,100 acres combined, have been sitting on the market for over a year.

The package includes the MorDo Ranch in Scottsdale and Horsethief Basin Ranch just outside of Lewistown, Montana as a joint listing by Walt Danley Realty in Scottsdale and PureWest Real Estate in Bozeman, Montana, as exclusive affiliates of Christie's International Real Estate.

All of the equipment and staff on both ranches will stay on for the buyer. "This is a package," Morton said. "It's all set for them. They don't have to do anything."

Here's a look at the two ranches.

The best face cream for dry skin

$
0
0
  • If you're one of those people whose face feels flaky whether it's December or August, finding the right face cream can be difficult.
  • But if full-on hydration and protection are what you're after, Dr. Jart+ Ceramidin Cream is your best bet.

While dry skin tends to plague most people in the chillier months, for some, their daily skin-care regimen is a near-constant fight against the flake. And, if you're one of these folks, you know that all moisturizers are not created equal. Luckily, looking out for some key ingredients can save you a lot of trial and error when it comes to soothing your chapped face.

Face creams that contain ceramides, for example, are usually a good bet; these molecules mimic your skin's natural lipid layer, which is a central component of its protective barrier. Hyaluronic acid is another ingredient to keep an eye out for. It works to attract and trap moisture, and in fact, can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water — making it something of an overachiever in the skin care industry.

While finding the right face cream is key to mitigating dry skin, the steps you take before you apply that face cream are equally important. You'll want to gently exfoliate pre-moisturizer, since dry patches of skin can block pores and keep face creams from penetrating deeply. Misting your face with a hydrating toner is also a smart move; damp skin absorbs creams more thoroughly.

Of course, if dry skin is a recurring issue you should talk to your dermatologist before embarking on a new routine. They can determine whether or not your skin is dehydrated because of an underlying condition like eczema or psoriasis. If that's the case, you may need a prescription for proper treatment.

Here are the best face creams for dry skin in 2019:

Updated on 9/16/19 by Caitlin Petreycik: Updated copy, formatting, links, and prices.

The best face cream for dry skin overall

The Dr. Jart+ Ceramidin Cream is made with ceramides, which are molecules that mimic your skin's natural barrier to hydrate and heal.

Hydration may seem like the most important quality in a treatment for dry skin, but you're going to want something that heals as well. Enter: Dr. Jart+ Ceramidin Cream. This product is such a winner because it's more of a skin mimic than a skin cream.

Let me explain. The star ingredients in Dr. Jart+'s cream are ceramides, which are lipid molecules that work to defend your skin. (Here I should note that while we all have naturally-occurring ceramides, the ones found in skin care products are synthetic — though they serve the same purpose.)

Ceramides help to bind skin cells together, forming the protective barrier that keeps good stuff in and bad stuff out. People who suffer from seriously dry skin tend to have a leaky barrier, which causes moisture to esape. So, Dr. Jart+ Ceramidin Cream helps your epidermis to hydrate itself by working to fix those leaks. Because of its ability to do actual maintenance on your skin instead of just covering up a problem, this cream is also fantastic for those with eczema.

A warning: This cream is heavy-duty, and if you don't actually suffer from chronically dry skin you might find it a little too heavy. It's perfect, however, for those with aging skin, diagnosed dry skin issues, or intense chap.

Pros: Helps to actually heal skin instead of just hydrate it

Cons: May be a little too heavy for those who only suffer from seasonal dryness

The best lightweight face cream for dry skin

The Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel is a lightweight moisturizer that hydrates without being too heavy.

One of the most common misconceptions about dry skin is that it's best treated with a heavy moisturizer. In fact, thick formulas can actually do more harm than good if they don't contain the right ingredients.

Instead of penetrating pores, creams with heavy consistencies tend to sit on top of your skin, sapping it of air and moisture. So in some cases, a lighter formula may be your best bet. And when it comes to lightweight moisturizers, no product does it better than Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel.

This all-star product contains one of the key ingredients I mentioned before: hyaluronic acid. Like ceramides, hyaluronic acid is naturally occurring in your body — not just in your skin, but in your joints and eyes as well. It holds 1,000 times its weight in water and pulls moisture from the environment, which it then utilizes to hydrate your skin.

While hyaluronic acid is an amazing source of moisture, it may not be strong enough for those suffering from rosacea or eczema. So if you're dealing with one of those issues, check in with your doctor for product recommendations.

Pros: Lightweight, perfect for those who don't love the feel of a heavy cream

Cons: May not be hydrating enough for certain skin issues

The best drugstore face cream for dry skin

Have dry skin that's also sensitive? CeraVe's Moisturizing Cream is formulated without fragrance, so you can hydrate without irritation.

Dry skin tends to be ultra-sensitive. It makes sense — when your face's protective barrier is damaged, certain skin care additives can suddenly leave you itchy and inflamed.

Luckily, CeraVe'sMoisturizing Cream is formulated without fragrances, making it ideal for sensitive skin. It also delivers the one-two punch of ceramides and hyaluronic acid that flaky skin is desperate for. First, the hyaluronic acid penetrates your pores, giving you a deep dose of moisture. Then, the ceramides work to lock that moisture in by repairing the skin's barrier layer.

CeraVe says that this hydration lasts for 24 hours, and while I'm not sure about that claim, I can definitely say that it left me feeling moisturized all day. There was no midday tightness or afternoon flake.

And I'm not the only one to give CeraVe a glowing review. Buyers can't stop talking about how much they love this wallet-friendly moisturizer. One reviewer on Influenster praised CeraVe's ability to dry down almost immediately.

Pros love it too, with Glamour beauty writer Rachel Nussbaum saying "ever since [I started using CeraVe], I've had baby soft, clear skin with the smallest pores of my life."

Pros: Wallet-friendly, absorbs quickly, moisturizing

Cons: It might be a little too heavy for those with acneic skin

The best pro-approved face cream for dry skin

Pros love the Drunk Elephant Protini Polypeptide Cream because it's packed with amino acids and peptides for moisturizing and anti-aging power.

While dry skin can strike at any time, it becomes more common with age. Women, especially, are increasingly prone to it as they get older, as menopause can cause some serious dryness. So instead of reaching for a cream that only delivers moisture, those with aging skin may want to find a product that also provides some anti-aging benefits.

That's exactly what Drunk Elephant's Protini cream does. It hydrates dry skin while delivering a powerful cocktail of amino acids and peptides (a.k.a. protein fragments that are widely thought to help preserve and boost collagen, reducing the appearance of fine lines).

According to The Cut, this cream had an insane amount of five-star reviews just hours after launching. Pros are fans of this cream, too. Fashionista editor Steph Saltzman raved that after using Protini, her skin "feels instantly coddled and protected, like it's been wrapped in a snug little security blanket/forcefield against the elements."

As a bonus, this cream wins for its near-perfect delivery system. Instead of a jar, which can easily become contaminated if you don't wash your hands before dipping your fingers in, Protini comes with a push-top applicator. It dispenses just the right amount of face cream in a totally hygienic way. Moisturized skin that's also healthy? Sign us up.

Pros: Anti-aging and moisturizing, innovative delivery system

Cons: The active ingredients may be a little too much for those with sensitive skin

The best plant-based face cream for dry skin

Youth To The People's Age Prevention Superfood Cream is both green and hyper-moisturizing, making it perfect for ethically-minded folks.

When it comes to skincare, it's not always easy being green. So many active ingredients are synthetic. And while that doesn't mean that they're unhealthy, there are plenty of people who'd prefer to get their skin care superpowers from plant-based sources. The caveat? Those natural ingredients aren't always as effective as the synthetic kind.

But Youth To The People seems to have licked this seemingly never-ending cycle with its Age Prevention Superfood Cream. This moisturizer is stocked with 100% vegan ingredients, but it's also a powerful weapon in the fight against flake. Some of these ingredients, like hyaluronic acid, you're already very familiar with, but others, like kale and spinach, are less common when it comes to skincare.

These two greens are great for your skin and your body. Spinach helps to prevent against sun damage, while kale contains some powerful antioxidants — specifically vitamins A, C, E, and K. These antioxidants are helpful in rebuilding your skin's protective layer, so that the hyaluronic acid also present in this formula can penetrate perfectly.

Buyers are huge fans of this product, too. On Influenster, one happy customer wrote that her skin feels so soft that she can't imagine using another cream. And since this formula contains lightweight moisturizers, like hyaluronic acid, you can use it all year long.

Pros: Vegan ingredients, lightweight

Cons: Severely dry skin may not get the amount of moisture it needs

15 weird US laws you may be surprised to know exist

  • Some laws were written decades ago, and are more hysterical than intimidating. Others are relatively new, but still just as strange.
  • From making sure cheese is "highly pleasing" to only allowing fried chicken to be eaten with your fingers, these US laws exist but are hard or impossible to enforce.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

You might be surprised to find out swearing in public or honking your horn near a local deli may result in fines or arrests in some US states. But they can!

Read more:The most ridiculous law in every state

We scoured the internet and official government websites to find some of the strangest laws that exist today.

Here are 15 that are not only odd, but probably difficult or impossible to enforce.

SEE ALSO: The most ridiculous law in every state

In Alabama, stink bombs are outlawed.

Anyone who grew up in the 90s or earlier is probably aware of the childhood pastime of throwing stink bombs at friends or unsuspecting passerby as a prank. However, in Alabama, it's against the law to sell or use stink balls — or anything like it that intentionally creates a bad odor.

According to Code 1965, § 41-60, it's unlawful to "sell, dispose of, give away or use within the city or its police jurisdiction articles known as stink balls or funk balls or anything of like nature, by whatever name known or called, the purpose of which is to create disagreeable odors to the great discomfort of persons coming in contact therewith."

In Arkansas, you can't honk your horn near a sandwich shop after 9 p.m.

According to one law set in place by Little Rock, Arkansas, "no person shall sound the horn on a vehicle at any place where cold drinks or sandwiches are served after 9:00 p.m." It's unclear how enforced this law is, but the likelihood is that a cop would have to be at the right place at the right time to truly enforce this law. Stay on the safe side and avoid honking your car horn near any Subways after-hours.

In Delaware, it's illegal to whisper in church.

According to a law enacted in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, whispering in a church is illegal and is seen as disturbing the act of peaceful worship.

However, while this law may technically still stand, it would take a particularly angry churchgoer to call the police on you for some quiet whispering.

In Florida, you can't wear masks or hoods covering the face in public.

A Florida law states that "no person or persons over 16 years of age shall, while wearing any mask, hood, or device whereby any portion of the face is so hidden, concealed, or covered as to conceal the identity of the wearer, enter upon, or be or appear upon any lane, walk, alley, street, road, highway, or other public way in this state."

Rest assured Halloween lovers, however. According to an article by the South Florida Sun Sentinel, the law is not enforced for "holiday costumes," theatrical productions, or the use of gas masks during emergencies or emergency management drills.

In Georgia, it's forbidden to eat fried chicken with a knife and fork.

This Gainesville, Georgia ordinance, passed in 1961 as a way to get publicity for the town, explicitly outlaws eating fried chicken with anything other than your hands. Although the "law" isn't really taken literally, and is rarely enforced, one visitor was arrested for using a knife and fork to eat her fried chicken in 2009

Gainesville Police Chief Frank Hooper reportedly informed 91-year-old Ginny Dietrick that it's against city ordinance to eat fried chicken, "a culinary delicacy sacred to this municipality, this county, this state, the Southland and this republic," with anything other than your fingers.

In Kansas, tire screeching is illegal.

Residents of Kansas cannot screech their tires, which has been interpreted as a breaching of the peace. The official law states that "it is unlawful for any person or persons, while operating a motor vehicle on the streets or highways of the city, to accelerate or speed the vehicle in such a manner or to turn a corner in such a manner as to cause the tires to screech."

If you slam on the brakes fast enough or have to avoid something in the road, your car's tires could potentially screech. Though it's difficult to determine the extent to which this law is enforced, and perhaps a police officer would let you off with a warning in this instance, it's best to avoid screeching your tires or speeding while traveling through this state.

In Louisiana, taking someone else's crawfish could land you in the big house.

According to this Louisiana law, stealing someone else's crawfish is strictly outlawed. The law states that if the theft or amount of crawfish taken amounts to less than $500, you will be not be imprisoned for more than 6 months or fined more than $500. However, if one was to steal more than $1,500 worth of crawfish, the offender could serve up to 10 years in prison or pay up to $3,000 in fines.

In Maryland, you can't swear in public.

"Swear words" are a part of many people's everyday vocabulary. However, in Rockville, Maryland, it's illegal to curse, swear, or use "obscene language" near any street, highway, or sidewalk where people passing by could hear you.

The punishment for this misdemeanor charge is around $100.

In Montana, you can't have a pet rat.

In Billings, Montana, it is against the law to own, raise, or sell rats unless the purpose of doing so is to feed birds of prey or reptiles. Though it's technically illegal to own a pet rat, a police officer would have to be in your home and see your furry friend in order to actually enforce it.

In Nebraska, you can't get married if you have an STD.

Nebraska laws prohibit anyone with any kind of venereal disease from marrying. This law is in place to protect people from unknowingly marrying someone with an STD — however, it is difficult to enforce. When obtaining a marriage license in Nebraska, you don't have to present your medical records or history, just a picture ID and proof of age — no blood test is required.

In New Hampshire, you can't pick up seaweed off the beach.

In New Hampshire, in an effort to stop illegal seaweed harvesting, lawmakers created a law that stated no one could pick up seaweed off of the beach at night. Students at Granite State college named it as "New Hampshire's Dumbest Law" in a contest. Former state Rep. Max Abramson has called the law "unenforceable."

"[The seaweed law] is unenforceable, it's silly, no other state has it, and absolutely no one knows why it's on the books," he said.

In North Carolina, drunk bingo is banned.

In North Carolina, designated bingo halls are strictly forbidden from selling alcohol. According to North Carolina law 18B-308, it's "unlawful to consume or sell alcohol in any room where a bingo game is being conducted." According to Raleigh Mag, the last time that the law was officially updated was more than 30 years ago.

Though drinking in a venue, room, or hall where bingo is illegal, we can assume that this law would be difficult to enforce if the game occurred within a private residence.

In Pennsylvania, it's illegal to feed your cat or dog less than once a day.

While it should be obvious that you need to feed your cat or dog at least once per day to keep them happy and healthy, this Pennsylvania law makes it so you have serious consequences if you don't.

According to a law reported on Municode, "dogs and cats shall be fed at least once a day unless otherwise directed by a veterinarian. The food shall be free from contamination and shall be wholesome, palatable and of sufficient quantity and nutritive value to meet the normal daily requirements for the condition and size of the dog or cat."

Dogs and cats also need to be given clean water three times per day, according to the law.

In Tennessee, you can't share your Netflix password.

Let's be honest — sharing Netflix, Hulu, or other streaming service passwords is commonplace among friends and family in today's age. A law in Tennessee, however, is making it illegal to do just that.

According to a previous article by Business Insider, the law was created in the hope of curbing illegal music streaming and, surprisingly, the rise of illegal movie streaming from services like Netflix. It aims to target individuals who hack into thousands of Netflix accounts, obtain their passwords, and sell them in bulk for a profit.

Netflix's policy on password sharing simply states that if anyone with access to your account violates their terms of service, you will be held responsible for their actions. They also limit viewing to four different devices at the same time, meaning you could only share or sell your password up to 3 times per account and all be able to watch simultaneously.

In conclusion, yes this law makes giving out your password illegal. However, we imagine it would be difficult to enforce giving out your password to one of two close friends or family members. Our advice: keep it on the down-low if you're going to do it, and make sure you truly trust the people you allow access to your streaming services.

In Wisconsin, cheese has to be delicious, or at least "highly pleasing."

According to a law in Wisconsin, both butter and cheese — which, to be fair, are hallmarks of this Midwestern state — have to be "highly pleasing" and free from any "undesirable flavors and odors." Since the deliciousness and "pleasing" quality of cheese is highly subjective, we can only hope no one has been arrested for selling or producing lackluster dairy products.

For the other two categories, a No. 1 spot indicated the cities scored the most points for metrics relating to entertainment and recreation and nightlife and parties.

To determine how each city ranked according to those three main factors, the study analyzed over 66 metrics across more than 180 cities, including categories like number of attractions, the diversity of restaurants in that area, the numbers of dance clubs, public beaches, and movie theaters per capita, and the prevalence of affordable restaurant rated 4.5 stars and up.

Samsung S10 Smartphone

Every Samsung Galaxy S10 has a name that's used to identify it when connected to a network or computer via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. That name isn't unique, though — by default, it's simply the name of the model of the phone.

In other words, if you connect your Samsung Galaxy S10 to a computer via Bluetooth, it'll appear by default in the list of devices as "Samsung Galaxy S10," potentially alongside several other phones with the same name.

To make it easier to distinguish your phone among similar devices, you can rename your Galaxy S10 with a more personalized description. Or, you might just like to rename all your devices with a more personal name, such as one that includes your own name (like "Dave's Galaxy S10.")

To free up space by clearing the Instagram cache on your iPhone, you simply need to delete and reinstall the Instagram app.

The best kitchen faucets you can buy

$
0
0
  • As one of the most heavily used household fixtures, the kitchen faucet needs to be highly functional, durable, efficient, and convenient — all while looking great.
  • The Delta Faucet Leland Single Handle Pull-Down Kitchen Faucet offers all of the above: It streams and sprays, guards against leaks, turns on manually or by touch, resists dirt and fingerprints, and exudes simple elegance.

The workhorse kitchen faucet is often taken for granted — until it breaks. Just think of how frequently you and other household members use it to wash your hands, get a drink, scrub vegetables, rinse dishes, wet sponges, and more. Ideally, you want one that stands up to everyday use.

Choosing a kitchen faucet may seem like a mundane task, but it's actually important. You want the right kind to fit your needs and your kitchen's decor, and you don't want to simply opt for the cheapest model.

There is also a myriad of faucet styles to choose from:

  • On/off mechanism: There are single-handle (one lever controls both water flow and temperature), double-handle (separate knobs — one for cold, one for hot — offer more precise temperature adjustment but may be less convenient), and touch- or motion-activated (clean and convenient but requiring a power source) designs.
  • Spout style: Choose from revolving or stationary, regular (steady stream) or two-mode (regular and spray), low arc (3 to 8 inches above the top of the sink), or high arc (also known as gooseneck, which is more than 8 inches above the top of the sink) models
  • Spray head: The sprayer can be separate from and next to the faucet, or at the end of the spout. The latter type is either pull-down (often on taller faucets) or pull-out (which sometimes includes much of the spout itself).
  • Finish: Whatever material comprises the faucet's finish (chrome, stainless steel, bronze, copper, brass, nickel, etc.) affects its appearance, cleanability, resistance to spotting and rusting, and price.

So before you shop for a new kitchen faucet, think about where (the existing space, pre-existing hardware) and how you plan to use it. Consider each model's specs:

  • Arc and spout height and reach: Do you have ample clearance for high-arc faucet or a cozier kitchen better suited to a low-arc model? Will you need to maneuver pots and pans under the faucet in order to wash them? Do you care how far the spout reaches across or extends over the sink?
  • Flow rate: Do you want adjustable water pressure? Do you need just a stream (for filling pots or washing vegetables) or also a spray (to add oomph to scrubbing sticky or burnt-on food off of dishes)?
  • Installation requirements: How many holes does your sink have for fitting a faucet? Some sinks have only one hole, and faucets requiring more than one hole can't be used (unless you plan to drill more holes … which may be inconvenient, costly, or structurally impossible). If your sink does have extra holes that the faucet doesn't need, you can use cover them with an escutcheon or deck plate) or use them to fit accessories like a side sprayer or soap dispenser.

No matter which kitchen faucet you pick, choose a model that helps save water. A faucet aerator efficiently reduces the flow rate while still maintaining water pressure, thus conserving water and saving you money. Also, fix (or replace if necessary) the faucet when you notice any leaking. According to the Alliance for Water Efficiency, "A faucet leaking 60 drops per minute will waste 192 gallons (726.8 liters) per month … 2,304 gallons (8.7 m3) per year." To calculate your household's potential water waste from a leaky kitchen faucet, visit the U.S. Geological Survey's Drip Calculator.

Finally, turn off the faucet when you're not using it. For example, when handwashing dishes, turn off the tap while soaping up dishes or fill the sink with water to wet and soak them instead of continually running the tap.

Here are our top picks for the best kitchen faucets:

The best overall kitchen faucet

The sleek and sturdy Delta Faucet Leland Single Handle Pull-Down Kitchen Faucet has three water-flow options and is available in two different on/off (manual and touch) models.

The elegant Delta Faucet Leland Single Handle Pull-Down Kitchen Faucet offers many convenient features. First, it not only streams and sprays water but also showers a powerful curtain of water (ShieldSpray Technology) that helps push food off of dishes without water ricocheting and splashing all over the place. With a flow rate of up to 1.8 gallons per minute, this faucet provides good water flow for kitchen use and has an aerator that can be removed and cleaned with an included wrench.

The spray head isn't your ordinary model. Like most others, it's versatile (for rinsing hard-to-reach places, filling a pot, cleaning the sink, etc.) with a 20-inch (when pulled down) hose. Features that make it stand out are its Touch-Clean Spray Holes (where you simply swipe your fingers across them to clear off calcium and lime build-up) and its MagnaTite Docking system, which uses strong magnets to hold the spray head securely in place against the faucet.

The Delta Faucet Leland Single Handle Pull-Down Kitchen Faucetis easy to keep clean. It's available in four different finishes (chrome, Venetian bronze, arctic steel, and SpotShield stainless steel) and Amazon reviewers found the arctic steel and SpotShield stainless steel best at effectively resisting water spots and fingerprints. Women's Guide blog particularly liked the high arc neck that swivels 360 degrees for being "tall" enough(approximately 14.9-inches high for the manual model, 15.4 inches for the Touch20 model) to accommodate large pots.

Speaking of the Touch20 model, this Delta Faucet Leland Single Handle Pull-Down Kitchen Faucet comes in a version with two sensors (one on top, one in front) where you simply touch any place on the spout or handle to start the flow of water at the temperature set by the handle; touch it again to turn off the water. Although very handy when your hands are full or dirty, this feature can be quite sensitive, resulting in water being turned on (and wasted) inadvertently. Luckily, the Touch20 faucet automatically shuts off after four minutes to conserve water. Healthy Kitchen 101 blog pointed out that "this feature is extremely useful if you have kids or even cats in your house, who may turn the water on by accidentally touching or brushing the unit." A TempSense LED light changes color to indicate water temperature (e.g., red for hot, blue for cold).

The Delta Faucet Leland Single Handle Pull-Down Kitchen Faucet comes with integrated one-piece supply lines and a diamond-embedded ceramic disc valve to minimize leak points and prevent leaks. Many Amazon reviewers found this faucet leak-proof, but some experienced leaks after a few months. This faucet fits onto sinks with one or three (with optional escutcheon) holes and is fairly easy to install.

The Delta Faucet Leland Single Handle Pull-Down Kitchen Faucet won praise from numerous kitchen and plumbing websites and blogs, including The Architect's GuideFaucet GuideHelpful HabitatKitchenFaucetCenterKitchen Faucets Guides, and TheBestFlushingToilet. Among more than 2,500 Amazon reviewers, it earned an average rating of 4.3 out of fi5ve stars.

Pros: Elegant and clean appearance, non-splash technology, sturdy and highly resistant construction, availability in manual and touch on/off operation

Cons: Hose a little short, sensors on touch-capable model sometimes not sensitive enough and sometimes too sensitive (inadvertently turning on water)

The best budget faucet

The WEWE Single Handle High Arc Brushed Nickel Pull-Out Kitchen Faucet is low in price but high in quality with efficient operation and a simple tulip design.

Despite the low price, the WEWE Single Handle High Arc Brushed Nickel Pull-Out Kitchen Faucet offers a lot of useful features. Its spray head has three settings: stream, spray, and pause. Amazon reviewers really like the pause feature for stopping (and thus conserving) water without having to turn it off completely while moving between tasks like filling pots and watering houseplants on the windowsill above the sink. A few, though, were less impressed about this function because "it's momentary, and only shuts off for as long as you hold [the button] down, and if you were spraying, it comes back on in flow mode," one shopper wrote. Nonetheless, people were pleased by the faucet's good water flow volume.

The WEWE Single Handle High Arc Brushed Nickel Pull-Out Kitchen Faucet has a high-arc (15.7-inches tall) neck that swivels 360 degrees. The spout hangs 8.5 inches above and reaches 8.5 inches across the top of the sink. The sprayer head hose is 71 inches in total length (a bit long for some people who complained that it hits pipes and other objects under the sink) and 23 inches when pulled out of the faucet. A weight retracts the hose and pulls the sprayer head back in place after use, although sometimes the weight falls off and/or doesn't pull the hose back completely.

Users like that this model is easy to clean with a stylish look and solid construction. The warm nickel finish is water-spot resistant. In addition to a brass body, a zinc-alloy handle, and a stainless steel spout, the faucet has an ABS plastic aerator (think of the tough plastic used to make Lego bricks) and a leak-resistant ceramic disc cartridge valve. Most Amazon customers reported no leaking, although a few did after a few months of use.

What many people really liked was WEWE Single Handle High Arc Brushed Nickel Pull Out Kitchen Faucet's easy and quick installation. It fits sinks with one hole (if used, escutcheon plate requires three holes). Kitchen Faucets Guides noted that this model "is ready to use right out of the box. It comes with already assembled hoses for effortless installation, with no plumber required. In fact, if you're a DIY enthusiast, it shouldn't take you more than 30 minutes to have it in place."

The WEWE Single Handle High Arc Brushed Nickel Pull Out Kitchen Faucet was named "best overall" kitchen faucet by The Spruce, and is one of the top picks on Kitchen Faucets Reviews and The Architect's Guide. It earned an average rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars among more than 1,700 Amazon reviewers.

Pros: Good price, nice appearance, three-way spray setting, and easy installation

Cons: Pause function a little frustrating to some, pull-down weight to retract hose isn't great

The best touchless faucet

Even if your hands are full or covered with grease or raw-meat juices, you can still turn the water on and off with the Moen Arbor Spot Resist Stainless One-Handle High Arc MotionSense Wave Pull-Down Kitchen Faucet.

Have you ever used dirty hands to turn on a faucet in order to wash those hands, only to have to wash the faucet itself and then mop up ensuing puddles around the faucet? Okay, this may be a first-world problem, but it is a nuisance you can avoid with the Moen Arbor Spot Resist Stainless One-Handle High Arc MotionSense Wave Pull-Down Kitchen Faucet. Marrying form with function, this model offers convenient, hands-free operation with just the wave of your hand; the Wave Sensor (on top) and Ready Sensor (in front) initiate and stop water flow when either one detects motion.

The faucet also has a water-saving automatic shut-off feature. Reports varied about the sensors' range (from a few inches to a foot) and sensitivity (too much or too little). Some Amazon users disabled one of the sensors to avoid turning on (and wasting) water by mistake when merely standing in front of or reaching over the faucet.

You also can use the lever handle to turn the water on and off manually, as well as adjust the water pressure and temperature. KitchenFaucetCenter recommended that "if you plan on using the spray head a lot more than the actual faucet itself, then the motion sense technology becomes less of a must-have feature...since that is the one feature that puts this faucet on top and makes it costly."

The Moen Arbor MotionSense Kitchen Faucet's 100-degree-rotating high-arc spout (15.5 inches) is great for filling and cleaning large pots. The spout with a pull-down spray head offers three functions: an aerated stream, a strong "PowerClean" spray for heavy-duty cleaning, and a pause that temporarily stops the water flow (1.5 gallons per minute maximum). The spray head's hose is 68 inches in total length and retracts smoothly to dock into place.

Users love that the Moen Arbor MotionSense Kitchen Faucet has a "Spot Resist Stainless" finish that prevents fingerprints and water spots. Then again, as Women's Guide pointed out — which named it "Best Motionless Faucet for the Money" — there should be no fingerprints on the faucet because it has touch-free operation.

The Moen Arbor MotionSense Kitchen Faucet uses a "Duralock Quick-Connect" installation system. Many Amazon users found installing this faucet quite easy and quick. It fits sinks with one hole or, with the included deck plate, three holes. Few users reported leaks.

Faucet Assistant, Helpful Habitat, and Kitchen Guy'd blogs all named this model the "Best Touchless Faucet. " Chosen as the top pick of Faucet Guide, The Architect's Guide, and Kitchen Faucets Guide, the Moen Arbor MotionSense Kitchen Faucet earned an average rating of 4.3 out of 5 stars among 2,300 Amazon reviewers

Pros: Convenient no-touch operation, spot-resistant finish

Cons: Expensive, easy to turn on water inadvertently

The best pull-out faucet

Perfect for cozier spaces, the Moen Arbor Spot Resist Stainless One-Handle High Arc Pull-Out Kitchen Faucet is easy to use and keep clean.

The Moen Arbor Spot Resist Stainless One-Handle High Arc Pull-Out Kitchen Faucet shouldn't be confused with the pull-down Moen Arbor MotionSense that we profiled above, but you could consider it as the baby brother. If you have a small sink or you don't have a lot of vertical clearance, the Moen Arbor Pull-Out Kitchen Faucet may be the right fit.

With a spout height of 12.13 inches, the Moen Arbor Pull-Out Kitchen Faucet is shorter than many other models. When docked on the faucet, the spout has a reach of 8.13 inches; however, with a total hose length of 59 inches, the pull-out spout certainly can reach farther.

The Moen Arbor Pull-Out Kitchen Faucet's spout swivels 360 degrees and, like the Moen Arbor MotionSense, there are three functions: an aerated stream, a strong "PowerClean" spray for heavy-duty cleaning, and a pause that temporarily stops the water flow (1.5 gallons per minute maximum). Healthy Kitchen 101 noted that once the faucet is turned off, it defaults from the "PowerClean" spray to the "regular" stream, meaning that "the flow will always be gentle and smooth when you turn it on." The sturdy spray head's flexible hose automatically retracts smoothly to dock into place.

The Moen Arbor Pull-Out Kitchen Faucet's installation allows water lines to be quickly connected without tools. It fits sinks with one hole or, with the included deck plate, three holes. Few Amazon shoppers reported leaks, although, for some, those occurred after a year of use.

Pros: A hybrid of pull-down and pull-out styles, easy installation

Cons: A little pricey

The best commercial-style faucet

With both a sprayer and a spout, the Kraus Two-Function Commercial Style Pre-Rinse Kitchen Faucet with Pull-Down Spring Spout and Pot Filler is a multifunctional, sturdy asset to any kitchen — industrial or at home.

If you have an industrial kitchen or just want that professional look in your home kitchen, install the Kraus Two-Function Commercial Style Pre-Rinse Kitchen Faucet with Pull-Down Spring Spout and Pot Filler. Kitchen Guydremarked that this model is great for large families or people who cook (and/or party) a lot. Modern and imposing in appearance, this tall (approximately 32.1 inches) dual-function faucet is striking with its straight lines, right angles, and exposed-coil spring hose encasing. Durable, heavy-duty, and efficient, it's constructed of lead-free solid brass (body and spray head) and stainless steel (coil) with a rust-resistant finish.

What distinguishes this model is that water comes out from two separate locations, making it multifunctional and convenient when completing kitchen tasks (especially by more than one person). Turn the water on and off with single handle that rotates forward 90 degrees. Switch between the 360-degree swiveling pot-filler spout and the sprayer for different jobs. With a height clearance of 11 inches and a reach of 8.5 inches, the spout accommodates tall pots, pitchers, and large dishes. It provides a soft aerated stream with a good flow rate of 1.8 gallons per minute for filling items as well as washing vegetables and fruit.

The pressurized pre-rinse sprayer powerfully scrubs away sticky food and dirt; users praised the handle's convenient lock function that keeps on a continuous spray. When securely clipped into the docking arm, the spray head has a height clearance of 11.25 inches and a reach of 7.635 inches. The total length of the sprayer head hose is 31.50 inches.

TheBestFlushingToilet which named this model "Top Commercial Kitchen Faucet" — liked the "heavy-duty spring that expands to let you pull the faucet out from the sink for using all around your kitchen." All around your kitchen may be a stretch, but you do have the freedom to extend the hose across side-by-side sinks, the counter, and more. Amazon reviewers enjoyed operating the comfortable spray head but several warned that the handle heats up quickly when you're using hot water; if you grasp the handle beyond the black insulated rubber section and touch the surrounding metal, you can burn yourself, so be careful.

The Kraus Two-Function Commercial Style Pre-Rinse Kitchen Faucet with Pull-Down Spring Spout and Pot Filler has soft rubber nozzles that are easy to wipe clean in order to prevent limescale build-up. It also has a ceramic cartridge valve to prevent leaks. Most Amazon users reported no leaks, although several noted leaking from the sprayer head. The faucet comes installation-ready with pre-attached water supply lines and all mounting hardware. Many Amazon reviewers found the one-hole installation quick and easy, although some hired plumbers.

The Helpful Habitat and Kitchen Faucets Reviews blogs also recommend this faucet, while 67% of more than 600 Amazon reviewers awarded it 5 out of 5 stars.

Pros: Multifunctional, convenient, heavy duty, reaches all parts of the sink and beyond

Cons: Newer model no longer lets water flow from both pot filler and sprayer simultaneously, spray head handle heats up when hot water used

The 8 best small business credit cards to open in 2019

Best Small Business 4x3

  • As 2019 moves along, we've looked at all the new and existing credit cards available this year, and picked a few of our favorites.
  • If you own a small business — whether it's a personal side gig, a sole proprietorship, or something with multiple employees — it's important to keep your business and personal expenses separate from each other.
  • Our top picks include points-earning cards like the Business Platinum® Card from American Express as well as cash-back options like the Ink Business Unlimited Credit Card.
  • Take a look below at our picks for best small business credit cards of 2019, and don't miss our guide to the best personal credit cards of 2019.

Whether you're a freelancer, someone with a side gig, or you run a business with 15 employees, an HR team, and a brick-and-mortar store or office, keeping your personal and business finances separate is vital. Even if you're a sole proprietor using your personal checking account, things can get muddy quickly when you're cutting personal and business checks from the same account, or charging drinks with friends and your monthly Microsoft Office subscription to the same credit card.

To make your own day-to-day life easier, and to save yourself a tremendous number of headaches when it comes time to file taxes, you're best keeping business purchases separate — I learned this quickly when I started to do some freelance work on the side.

Why you need a business credit card

There are a few other reasons to use a business card, though.

Your personal card might not facilitate the kind of spending your company does. Business cards can have higher credit limits, and in most cases, the activity on a business card won't affect your personal credit report (although if you default on the business card, the card issuer can still come after you personally).

If you're a "sole proprietor" business, where you work solo and work under your own name and social security number (rather than a business name), getting a business card is more about the convenience of keeping your expenses separate, and protecting your own credit profile and assets — even the smallest of businesses are eligible, such as freelancers, individuals with side gigs, or even people who resell things on eBay.

If you're a bigger business, though — or aspire to grow into one, with employees and more resources, having a business card is a must — not only to separate expenses, but also to establish business credit, so that you have flexibility later on with loans and leases. Plus, you can get additional authorized cards for employees as needed.

These are the best business credit cards to open in 2019

1 Ink Business Preferred Credit Card

1. Ink Business Preferred Credit Card

Welcome offer: 80,000 Ultimate Rewards points when you spend $5,000 on the card in the first three months.

Annual fee: $95

Earning rates: 3 points per dollar on the first $150,000 your business spends on combined purchases each cardmember year on travel, shipping, internet/cable/phone, and advertising on social media sites or with search engines. Purchases after you reach $150,000, or in any other category, earn 1 point per dollar.

Standout benefits: Cell phone protection, primary car rental insurance

If you're looking to earn valuable, flexible rewards points on your small business spending, the Chase Ultimate Rewards (UR) ecosystem is among the best options. If you already have one of Chase's popular personal rewards cards — like the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card or Chase Sapphire Reserve— the Ink Business Preferred is an ideal business card companion.

Like those cards, the Ink Preferred earns UR points, and while you can keep them on that card and separate from the rest of your stash, you can also combine them with the rest of your points. These points can be traded for cash back, transferred to frequent flyer and hotel loyalty partners, or used to purchase travel with a 25% bonus (or a 50% bonus if you move your points over to your Chase Sapphire Reserve).

The Ink Business Preferred card also earns bonus points in some of the most common expense categories for businesses, from travel to shipping to advertising on social media sites like Facebook and search engines such as Google Ads. That earning rate, plus the card's 80,000 point sign-up bonus — the highest bonus currently offered by Chase — should make for a nice stash of Ultimate Reward points.

Among other benefits, the Ink Business Preferred offers cell phone protections. When you use the Ink Preferred to pay your cell phone bill, you're covered for up to $600 for damage, loss, or theft of your cell phone — or your employees' work-provided phones, if you provide them. You're limited to three claims per rolling 12-month period, but this can save you a fortune. That insurance alone makes up for the $95 annual fee.

Click here to learn more about the Ink Business Preferred card from our partner The Points Guy.

2. The Business Platinum® Card from American Express

2 The Business Platinum Card from American Express

Welcome offer: Up to 100,000 Membership Rewards points (50,000 points after you spend $10,000 in the first three months, and another 50,000 if you spend an additional $15,000 in that same time frame). This limited-time offer is available until December 4.

Annual fee: $595

Earning rates: 5 points per dollar on flights and prepaid hotels booked at amextravel.com, 1.5 points per dollar on purchases of $5,000 or more (up to 1 million additional points per year), 1 point per dollar on everything else

Standout benefits:

  • $200 annual airline fee credit
  • Access to airport lounges include Centurion lounges, Priority Pass lounges, and Delta Sky Clubs (when you're flying Delta)
  • Up to $200 in Dell statement credits annually (divided into up to $100 between January and June and up to $100 between July and December)
  • One year of WeWork Platinum Global Access if you enroll by December 31, 2019
  • Get 35% of your points back when you use Pay With Points to book an economy flight with your selected airline or a business- or first-class flight with any airline

The small business version of American Express's famed Platinum Card used to be our pick for the top business card, but in the past year the annual fee has increased and it's become a bit more of a niche product — potentially useful for mid-sized businesses that spend a lot on flights and travel, but less valuable for sole proprieters and very small operations.

Card holders can now receive a complimentary year of WeWork Platinum Global Access, allowing them to use any of WeWork's 300-plus facilities, which are spread across more than 75 cities throughout the world. The benefit is worth $2,700, according to Amex.

Business Platinum card holders also get up to $200 of annual statement credits to use when shopping at Dell and $200 in airline fee credits each calendar year, essentially rebating part of the annual fee. Plus, because the airline fee credit is valid each calendar year, not cardmember year, you could get it twice in your first 12 months of having the card.

Other travel benefits include access to more than 1,200 airport lounges, 10 complimentary Gogo in-flight Wi-Fi passes each year, and complimentary Gold elite status with Hilton and Marriott.

3. The Blue Business Plus Credit Card from American Express

3 The Blue Business Plus Credit Card from American Express

Welcome offer: N/A

Annual fee: $0

Earning rates: 2 Amex Membership Rewards points per dollar on the first $50,000 in spending every year (after that, it's 1x point).

Standout benefits: No annual fee, 0% introductory APR on purchases and balance transfers for the first 12 months (then a variable rate of 15.24%-21.24%)

The Blue Business Plus Card doesn't usually have a welcome offer, and that might be enough to turn many people away from it. However, it's the rare points-earning business card that doesn't charge an annual fee; you'll earn 2 points per dollar on the first $50,000 you spend each year, with no bonus categories to keep track of. According to travel website The Points Guy, Amex points are worth 2 cents apiece, so you're getting a 4% return on all your business spending up to $50,000 each year.

There's also a 0% introductory APR on purchases and balance transfers. While funding your startup with a credit card may not be the best idea, the introductory APR can help if you have a few larger purchases coming up and are still working to get cash flow regular.

4. Capital One Spark Miles for Business

4 Capital One Spark Miles for Business

Welcome offer: 50,000 miles after you spend $4,500 in the first three months

Annual fee: $0 the first year; $95 after that

Earning rate: 2x miles on all purchases

Standout benefits: Transfer miles to Capital One's airline partners including Air Canada and Emirates or redeem miles to cover travel purchases on your statement, up to a $100 credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck

The Spark Miles for Business is a great option if you want choices in how you redeem your miles. You can transfer them to more than 10 airline partners or you can use miles to "wipe" your business' travel expenses from your credit card statement. Beyond that, you can redeem miles for cash back or gift cards. So if you don't want to be locked into just one way to use your rewards, this card could make sense.

You'll earn 2 miles per dollar on all purchases with no cap. Transferring miles to airline partners like Air Canada, Avianca, and Singapore Airlines will usually get you the most value, but you'll have to do a bit of work to uncover the best uses with each program.

5. Chase Ink Business Unlimited Credit Card

5 Ink Business Unlimited

Welcome offer: $500 (or 50,000 Ultimate Rewards points) after you spend $3,000 in the first three months

Annual fee: $0

Earning rate: 1.5% cash back on all purchases

Standout benefits: If you also have a card that earns Ultimate Rewards points, you can redeem cash back as points with travel partners and get more than 1.5% back per, 0% introductory APR on purchases for the first 12 months (then a variable rate of 15.49%-21.49%)

The newest card in Chase's business portfolio, the Ink Business Unlimited is a simple one at first — earn unlimited 1.5% cash back.

However, just like the consumer Chase Freedom and Chase Freedom Unlimited cards, the Ink Business Unlimited has a trick up its sleeve. Although the card is marketed as "cash back," it actually earns Ultimate Rewards points that you can redeem for cash (1 point = $0.01).

That means that you can combine the points earned from the Ink Business Unlimited with the ones you earn from cards like the Ink Preferred, or the personal Sapphire Reserve, and either earn a bonus when you redeem them for travel through Chase, or transfer them to travel partners. Combined with an Ink Preferred, you'll get a guaranteed 1.5–3 points per dollar spent.

The card offers a 0% introductory APR for 12 months and has no annual fee, making it a no-brainer for every small business owner, freelancer, or side-gig hustler.

7 Amex Business Gold Card

6. American Express Business Gold Card

Welcome offer: Earn up to $500 back as statement credits by purchasing qualifying services at FedEx within the first three months. This is only available until November 6, 2019.

Annual fee: $295

Earning rates: 4x points on your top two spending categories each billing cycle on up to $150,000 in combined purchases each year from the following list: airfare purchased directly from airlines, US purchases for advertising in select media, US purchases at gas stations, US purchases made directly from select technology providers, US purchase at restaurants, and US purchases for shipping; 1x point on everything else

Standout benefits: 25% of your points back when you pay with points to book first or business-class airfare with American Express Travel (or any class of flight with your selected qualifying airline), up to 250,000 points back per calendar year.

If you don't want to pay the higher annual fee of the Business Platinum Card, the Business Gold Card is a good alternative. And depending on your spending habits, the Business Gold could actually be a more rewarding choice, thanks to the ability to earn 4x points on popular business spending categories.

And if you spend a lot at FedEx, now's a perfect time to open the card, since you can get up to $500 back on qualifying FedEx purchases made in the first three months. Just note that this welcome offer is only available until November 6, 2019.

7. Chase Ink Business Cash Credit Card

6 Ink Business Cash

Welcome offer: $500 (or 50,000 Ultimate Rewards points) after you spend $3,000 in the first three months

Annual fee: $0

Earning rates: 5% cash back (or 5x points) on the first $25,000 in combined purchases at office supply stores and on internet, cable, and phone services each card holder year, 2% back (or 2x points) on the first $25,000 in purchases at gas stations and restaurants each year, and 1% (or 1x point) on everything else with no cap.

Standout benefits: If you also have a card that earns Ultimate Rewards points, you can redeem cash back as points with travel partners and get a higher return on your spending, 0% introductory APR on purchases for the first 12 months (then a variable rate of 15.49%-21.49%)

The Ink Cash is another solid Chase entry, and just like with the Ink Unlimited, you can pool the "cash" you earn with points from a points-earning card, effectively converting your cash into (potentially) more valuable points.

The Ink Cash is an especially good option if you can maximize its bonus categories, including office supply stores, internet, cable, and restaurants, among others.

Click here to learn more about the Chase Ink Business Cash from our partner The Points Guy.

8. Capital One Spark Cash for Business

Welcome offer: $500 after you spend $4,500 in the first three months

Annual fee: $0 for the first year; $95 after that

Earning rate: 2% on all purchases

Standout benefits: Free employee cards that also earn 2% back on everything,

This is probably the easiest-to-use card on this list, but simple doesn't mean bad — this can be a fantastically rewarding card.

The Capital One Spark Cash earns unlimited 2% cash back on all purchases. That's it. No categories, no points values or conversions, no redemption minimums. Rewards won't expire for the life of the account, and you can redeem any amount of cash back. The card has a $95 annual fee, waived the first year.

At first glance, the Amex Blue Business Plus might seem like a better option, since it earns 2x points and doesn't have an annual fee. However, keep in mind that while 2x points may be more valuable than 2% cash if you redeem strategically for travel by transferring to partners, Membership Rewards points can't be redeemed outright for cash. You can redeem them for a statement credit, but they'll only be worth 0.6 cents each. That means that effectively, the Amex card only offers 1.2% "cash" back, compared to the no-strings-attached 2% from the Capital One Spark Cash.

How to indent or 'tab' on your iPhone in the Pages app to properly format your documents

using smartphone iphone

  • To indent or "tab" on your iPhone in the Pages app, you'll need to use a special menu bar for it.
  • Adding indentation in Pages on your iPhone allows you to create proper paragraph orientation, and makes bulleted or numbered lists more visually appealing.
  • You can use the tab feature to indent any line in Pages in just a few seconds.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

While indenting the first line of every new paragraph is no longer the standard for digital publishing, adding that bit of space is the standard practice for text layout in books, in most legal and legislative documents, and in many other forms of writing.

Indenting makes the start of each new paragraph clear to the reader, and makes lists crisper and easier to appreciate visually. On a computer, you simply tap the "tab" key for the perfect indented text (which amount to about a half inch on a printed page).

On an iPhone, there is no tab key. But in the Pages app, it's easy to insert a perfect indent with just a few quick taps on the screen.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

iPhone XS (From $999.99 at Best Buy)

How to tab on an iPhone in the Pages app

1. Open the Pages app, and open an existing or new document.

2. Tap the space just to the left of the line you wish to indent.

3. Tap on the blue cursor line.

4. Tap the word "Insert" in the menu bar that appears.

5. Tap the line and arrow combination beside the word "Tab."

How to turn off automatic updates on your iPhone to save data and battery

$

iPhone apps

There are many good reasons to let your iPhone update itself automatically. An updated phone will be running the latest version of apps and other software, meaning the best possible user experience and likely the fewest glitches.

iOS updates also help keep your iPhone as secure as possible. And best of all, with automatic updates, you don't even have to do a thing.

On the other hand, there are also reasons to disable automatic iPhone updates. If your phone is near its data limit or almost drained of its charge, that forced update might incur a charge for overages or use the last of your  battery.

Or maybe you simply prefer to control how and when your iPhone updates — whatever the reason, it's easy to turn off automatic updates on an iPhone.

Here's how to do it for software and app updates.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

iPhone XS (From $999.99 at Best Buy)

How to turn off automatic software updates on an iPhone

1. Open the Settings app and scroll down to the General tab.

2. Tap the Software Update tab.

2. Scroll to and tap the iTunes & App Store tab.

3. Toggle off the "Updates" tab so it turns from green to white.

The 20 best countries around the world to invest in now

$

Singapore, skyline, swimming pool

  • U.S. News & World Report released its rankings for the best countries to invest in this year.
  • Those rankings were determined by 7,000 worldwide business decision makers who scored each country on eight attributes, including entrepreneurship, economic stability, and favorable tax environment.
  • The list differs greatly from last year's; three of this year's top five countries were not even ranked last year.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

To qualify as a country worthy of investment, certain standards must be met.

A World Bank Group report in 2011 highlighted four factors — the country's people, environment, relationships, and framework — that propel both individuals and corporations to invest in a given country's natural resources, markets, technologies, or brands.

Guided by this report, U.S. News & World Report identified the best countries to invest in for 2019

To determine the overall list, U.S. News & World Report surveyed over 21,000 people worldwide about 80 different countries, measuring them on 65 different attributes, including cultural influence, entrepreneurship, and quality of life.

Read more: The 20 best countries around the world to live as an expat, ranked

U.S. News focused on just eight of the 65 attributes: entrepreneurship, economic stability, favorable tax environment, innovation, skilled labor, technological expertise, dynamism, and corruption. Responses from over 7,000 survey participants — who act as decision makers in business around the globe — were then used to determine the ranking.

The most recent survey produced a completely different ranking last year; in 2018, the top five countries for investment were the Philippines, Indonesia, Poland, Malaysia, and Singapore. See below for this year's rankings, with the country's population and GDP (from U.S. News & World Report) and the GDP growth percentage in 2018 (from The World Bank).

We tried these cult-favorite work pants with an adjustable hem for heels or flats — and we loved them

  • M.M. LaFleur is a cult-favorite women's workwear company that makes luxurious but functional clothes for busy women.
  • 70% of their clients are repeat customers.
  • The Foster Pant is their highest-earning style, and we got a chance to try them out. Not only are they extremely comfortable, but they have a concealed button that adjusts the hem, so you can wear them with heels or flats within seconds.

Women's workwear is in a heyday of evolution.

One landmark company in the emerging movement is MM. LaFleur  a cult-favorite using functional and luxurious materials and delivering on the sort of understated elegance that head designer (and Zac Posen veteran) Miyako Nakamura is so adept at producing.

Recently, they sent us their Foster Pant to test. They're machine-washable and made from a thick Italian-cotton blend that's designed to strike a balance between stretch and structure. It's a cigarette leg that feels fitted without crossing the line into too tight for the office. And, it's got an inventive perk: a concealed button in the hem that allows you to adjust the length from high to low. The button is unobtrusive, and it's a game-changer for petite women or those who want to switch from heels to flats without switching pants.

You can read our thoughts below, but overall, we loved them for their comfort, versatility, and their flattering yet professional design.

The Foster Pant is their first pant style, and for the second year in a row, it's also been the highest-earning style in the company — earning millions from a notoriously difficult demographic to please. Women's workwear is plagued by a phenomenon of fast fashion and trends that, understandably, see a high turnover rate. Instead of spending the amount of money projected as necessary to make more luxurious and better-fitting clothes for women overall, most retailers are happy to continue doing business as usual.

But what new workwear companies like M.M. LaFleur and Citizen's Mark are betting on is that women do not want fast fashion for work. They do not want trends. They want comfort, elegance, and professionalism to coincide, and they want their workwear to actually make their lives easier. They want the same aura of credibility as a really great suit creates, and they likely want to spend less time in a dressing room to find it.

This ethos has turned out well for the brand. Over 70% of M.M. LaFleur's customers are returning clients, thanks to the "Bento Box" experience. Instead of forcing busy, working women to come to their stores in order to realize how great their clothes are, M.M. LaFleur offers a comprehensive questionnaire to learn about you, assigns a stylist to your case who picks out four to six wardrobe staples they think you'll love, and then sends you a box of those items to try on in the comfort of your home. You can pack up what you don't want and schedule a UPS pick-up to grab it. They'll only charge you for what you keep, and it's not a subscription service.

Not only are they addressing a lapse in the market (comfortable, machine-washable, elegant workwear), but they're doing it with notable fanfare.

You can read our individual thoughts on the pants below, or shop them directly here.

The Foster Pant, MM. LaFleur, $195 currently comes in six colors: black, chocolate, dark navy, dark spruce, monsoon, russet, and saddle, and a variety of inclusive sizes.

Connie Chen, Insider Picks reporter

The Foster Pant, M.M. LaFleur, $195

Work pants are always a struggle to shop for because I want them to balance comfort and professionalism. Since I spend most of the day sitting down or walking around the office, comfort is what I yearn for the most, but is often the factor I end up having to compromise. The Foster Pant somehow manages to knock both comfort and structure out of the park.

I'm a big fan of stretch, which you wouldn't ordinarily associate with work pants, but the Foster Pant fits at all the right places while remaining crisp and sharp. The Monsoon gray is a stylish, versatile color that goes with anything, yet another reason these are now one of my go-to work pants.

Malarie Gokey, Insider Picks senior editor

The Foster Pant, M.M. LaFleur, $195

I used to avoid dress pants because I disliked ironing the easily wrinkled fabric and I was annoyed that I always had to hem them up. Then I tried M.M. La Fleur 's Foster Pant, which magically solved both of my problems.

These pants don't wrinkle easily because they stretch to fit your curves perfectly. Plus, the concealed button hem makes it absurdly easy to shorten the pants to the perfect length for my 5'2 frame. I wish every pair of pants had that ingenious hem!

I love the fit and look of the Foster pants so much I bought a special pair of heels to wear them with.

Mara Leighton, Insider Picks reporter

The Foster Pant, M.M. LaFleur, $195

I'm a pretty low maintenance person, but I have a long checklist for what I look for in workwear. I spend the majority of my life in it, so if I'm going to spend the money I want to feel comfortable, look tailored and professional, and find that the materials are elastic enough to maintain their shape even after repeated wears. If they're machine-washable and wrinkle-resistant, then they earn a place of honor.

M.M. LaFleur makes a lot of my favorite workwear because they understand how to combine comfort and elegance so remarkably well. The Foster Pants hit all my must-haves.

The cigarette pant shape is fitted but appropriate. The thick Italian-cotton blend is comfortable and has a lot of give, but also provides structure. And they're machine-washable.

I'm 5'7, so the concealed button wasn't a major draw for me, but I appreciate the pension for innovation (which also shows up in the unique seam design in the back of the pants, an understated but nonetheless flattering addition).

My advice would be if you're not sure about sizing to try a size down. I'm a pretty solid 4 (though recently things have been feeling looser in general), and I'm comfortable in my pair of 4 Fosters, but would probably have wanted to try the 2 to gauge.

Ellen Hoffman: Insider Picks senior editor

The Foster Pant, M.M. LaFleur, $195

Every woman needs a go-to pair of black work pants, and the Foster Pants are now mine for their surprising comfort and flattering look. M.M.LaFleur claims in the product description for these pants that they've "cracked the comfort code," and as far as I'm concerned, they have. The pants are made of a thick Italian-cotton blend that is at once stretchy and structured — holding me in in all the right places.

As a petite woman, I especially appreciate the adjustable hem that lets me shorten the pants to the perfect ankle length for my 5'3" frame. Figuring out how to switch the length of the pants took me a minute, but there's an instructional video on M.M.LaFleur's Instagram that anyone having trouble with it can refer to for help.
