10 companies that reward you for getting rid of stuff you don't need anymore

Madewell

  • At this point, it's hard to ignore the fact that we have a trash problem.
  • As a society, we've become accustomed to ending the lifecycle of our products when we no longer want or need them. But, plenty of brands are incentivizing us to extend the life of our products by offering to recycle them for us and giving us discounts for our next shopping trip.
  • Patagonia, Madewell, and Best Buy are just a few of the retailers that'll recycle your old products for you and give you discounts and store credits in return. Keep reading to see all 10 companies that reward you for getting rid of stuff you don't need anymore.

Most of us are willing to agree that recycling is important — be it the Patagonia jacket you outgrew or the plastic water bottle you bought at lunch.

And while most of us mean to donate used clothes or finally find out the proper way to recycle batteries, far fewer of us actually get around to it in the end.

It might help, then, that some companies even offer incentives like store credit, discounts, and cash back for getting rid of the things you're no longer using. Some stores, like Staples and Best Buy, can even recycle it in a better way than you can.

You can save money, or even make some, at the same time that you purge your place of clutter, and keep more trash out of landfills and help communities in need.

Below are 10 companies that reward you for recycling stuff you no longer need:

Patagonia

Shop Patagonia

Patagonia has a pretty great program to reduce waste, as well as the option to mail in Patagonia items that have reached the end of their useful lifespan. You can find the address here, or simply drop them off at the nearest participating retail store to keep them out of a landfill or incinerator.

For clothes that can still be worn, there's Worn Wear. Using this program, you can either trade in Patagonia clothes, learn how to repair and care for them, or shop for clothes that have been previously loved.

Trade in your past Patagonia clothes and gear at any Patagonia retail location and receive credit to put toward another new or used piece.

By keeping the Worn Wear wheel turning, you can upgrade your clothes, get money back to buy new ones, and avoid the landfills.

Madewell

Shop Madewell and recycle your jeans

Stop by a Madewell shop year-round and drop off pre-loved pairs of jeans (your favorite older pair, your dad's retired work jeans) and Madewell and the Blue Jeans go Green program will turn them into housing insulation for communities in need — and give you $20 off new ones.

Right now, you can even do it online thanks to a postage-paid mailer included with every online Madewell purchase. Pop your jeans into the envelope and send. You'll still get $20 off Madewell jeans.

The items dropped in collection bins are sent to a recycling center where they are then repurposed for reuse to extend their life or recycled into raw materials for use in products like insulation, carpet padding, stuffing for toys, and fibers for new clothing.

Cuyana

Shop Cuyana

Whenever you purchase something from Cuyana and add the dedicated Lean Closet card in your bag at checkout, they will send you a reusable bag to fill up with items that are just taking up space in your closet. You mail the bag back to them (with the included shipping label) and through their non-profit partner, H.E.A.R.T., your donated clothing will be given directly to women who will be able to use it to gain work and new opportunities. As an added bonus, you'll receive a $10 credit toward your next Cuyana purchase.

How to save battery on your Apple Watch in 5 different ways

Apple Watch 2

While a full charge on your Apple Watch is supposed to last roughly 18 hours, it can often be considerably less than that, especially if you receive regular notifications and alerts, track lengthy workouts, or use apps a lot on the device.

There's nothing more frustrating than seeing that low battery alert when you swore you only charged it a few hours ago, but it's pretty much a given if you use your device a lot.

Thankfully, there are some things you can do to increase the amount of time your battery lasts. Although these methods aren't guaranteed to drastically improve your battery life, they are several of the best options you have to try and save battery.

Here are just a few battery-saving options for your Apple Watch

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Use a darker watch face

Since black pixels require less energy than other colors on OLED screens, it makes sense that using a darker watch face would help preserve your Apple Watch's battery.

To change your watch face, open the Watch app on your iPhone and under the Face Gallery tab, choose your desired watch face by tapping the Add option.

Then, tap the My Watch option on the menu across the bottom of your screen and, under My Faces, choose your desired face.

Adjust your screen brightness

Just as your screen brightness can affect battery life on your iPhone, the same is true of the Apple Watch

Lower your screen brightness by tapping the Settings app directly on your watch or selecting Brightness & Text Size under the My Watch tab in the Watch app.

Use the slider to adjust the brightness of your Apple Watch's screen, moving it to the left to reduce it.

Reduce the number of notifications you receive

Constantly having your Apple Watch's screen light up with new notifications can create a real drain on battery life. You can limit this by reducing the number of notifications you receive.

To do this, open the Watch app on your iPhone and choose the Notifications option under My Watch. From there, you can individually decrease or disable notifications for each app by tapping on them one by one.

Disable the wrist raise feature

Apple Watch's wrist raise feature turns on the screen every time you lift your wrist, showing you the time and any other notifications that may have popped up. It can be convenient, sure, but it can also drain your battery.

To turn this off, navigate to the Settings app on either your watch or on the Watch app on your iPhone. Go to Settings, then General, then Wake Screen.

Here, you can disable the Wake Screen on Wrist Raise and Wake Screen on Crown Up features by toggling the green button to the right of each option.

Turn on Power Reserve mode

While this isn't necessarily the most convenient option for saving your watch's battery, it's certainly the most effective. Turning on Power Reserve mode will disable any and all notifications and alerts on the device as well as shutting down every other feature.

Basically, it will become a glorified regular watch, only displaying the time. To enable this, swipe up on your watch's home screen to reveal the Glances. Tap the power percentage button and then, under the percentage of battery remaining, slide the Power Reserve button to the right to enable it.

14 things that child therapists wish they could say to parents

  • We asked a group of experienced mental health professionals what they wish the parents of their young clients knew.
  • The most common advice stemmed from reminding parents how integral their influence  — direct or indirect — is on children, no matter the age.
  • For instance, parents often don't realize the power of their own unconscious experience and its impact on how they raise their kids.
  • It's easy to turn your head and make excuses for your child, but ignoring challenging behavior will make it hard to transition into adulthood, one expert said.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

While most therapists make it a priority to reassure parents they're doing a great job, they also try to help make the job of raising children a bit smoother by zeroing in on a handful of important reminders — some of which they don't always get the chance to say to parents directly.

We asked 11 mental health professionals what they wish that parents of their young clients knew. The most common advice stemmed from reminding parents how integral their influence  — direct or indirect — is on children, no matter the age. Here are the areas where therapists believe an extra dose of awareness could go a long way.

SEE ALSO: 12 ways to raise smarter, more successful, and happier kids, according to school educators and therapists

1. ‘Don’t let baggage fog decision-making’

Parents often believe they are thinking only of their children without realizing the power of their own unconscious experience and its impact on how they raise their kids.

"I think parents often don't realize how their own emotions, thoughts, feelings, and overall 'stuff'  significantly impacts their decisions and perspectives," said Shuli Sandler, a psychologist.

2. ‘Your child is not you’

As charming as it sounds to raise a "mini-me," children are not only unique, they aren't wired exactly like Mom and Dad.

"It is important to realize that what worked for parents when they were a teen does not always work for their own teen," said Irene Little, clinical director of Access Counseling Group. "Children may be very similar in personality and mannerisms, but it does not mean they think alike or feel the same about situations their parents did when they were younger."

3. ‘Rethink those intimidation tactics’

A trusting relationship is certainly not built from fear. Kids should not feel like they are walking on eggshells in their own home.

"I have had several instances where I meet a parent and it brings up fear and anxiety in myself," said Marisa Hendrickson, a licensed mental health counselor in Seattle. "Their presence is so intimidating and the vibes they are putting off make me so insecure, I can only imagine what their child's experience living with them and feeling that pressure every day is like."

4. ‘Parenting equals leadership — every day’

With 40 years of experience as a marriage and family therapist, Rick Capaldi know what children need: committed leadership from the single most influential people in their lives (their parents). "Many parents are not paying attention to what their children are being exposed to and how well they're managing the challenges presented by such exposure," said Capaldi, who gives a contemporary version of the three R's based on his book: reading their child's environment, regulating their child's emotional temperature, and redirecting their child's behavior.

5. ‘Trust your role as the most important one’

Step back and ask yourself how your actions, perspective, and language could shift to help your child work through a problem.

"Parents need to remember that despite the fact that they may not have the therapeutic tools or ability to help their child in a particular situation, they still play a major role in their child being successful in treatment," said Jenna Vogler, a licensed mental health counselor in New York.

6. ‘Follow through on consequences and rewards’

Kids need to know what to expect on a day-to-day basis, not just once in a while. This instills trust and respect and cuts down on tantrums.

"I wish all parents knew that children need consistency," said Heather Ackley, a therapist at New Hope Parenting Solutions. "They need consistency in every aspect of their lives. When we are talking about schedules and rules, follow through at least 95% of the time. When we are talking about rewards and consequences, follow through 100% of the time."

7. ‘Privacy is not a right’

Even though it seems to be widely discussed, experts agree there is not enough emphasis on safety in terms of technology. "Parents need to be more aware of their children's phone activity," said Ackley. "They should have their children's phone passwords and they should check them consistently. Children unknowingly do things that are unsafe on their phones every day.  Whether it turns into an unsafe situation or not depends on the level of parent involvement."

8. ‘Give the plan time to work’

Circling back to consistency, be ready to put in the work that is given to you by your child's therapist or that you've implemented yourself.

"If we come up with a plan in therapy, try it for 10 days at minimum before stopping," said Cari Wainio, LAPC with Towler Counseling, LLC. "If you try it any less, you haven't given it a chance."

9. ‘When you mess up, apologize’

Don't presume that your parenting has to be perfect or that you're not entitled to moments of weakness. "Making mistakes provides the unique opportunity for you to model how to make an appropriate apology," said Caroline Fleck, a psychologist in California. "Model how to take responsibility, apologize without making excuses, and repair any harm done."

10. ‘Ease up on the grades’

Believe it or not, pursuing achievements doesn't start with good ranks in school. "Learning to establish realistic expectations and create schedules that are conducive to good sleep and self-care will arguably serve them better in life than learning to sacrifice their stability for success," said Fleck.

11. ‘Practice what you preach’

Your non-verbal examples carry a great deal of influence and not to mention, aren't confrontational. "Most of the parents I work with are hypocrites," said Fleck. "Heck, I'm a parent and I'm a hypocrite. I don't allow my 6-year-old to play on a phone or tablet for fear that she'll develop bad habits, yet I frequently check my phone during dinner. I tell her to limit treats, but it's rare for me to go a night without something to satisfy my sweet tooth. The fact of the matter is that modeling remains one of the most effective ways to shape behavior."

12. ‘When you enable, you disable’

It's easy to turn your head and make excuses for your child, but ignoring challenging behavior will make it hard to transition into adulthood.

"When you keep doing everything for him or her or engage in permissive parenting you take away your child's ability to think for themselves and to learn to do things for him or herself," said Catherine Jackson, licensed psychologist in Chicago.

13. ‘Remember the science of development‘

It's not that your kiddo doesn't want to be rational; they simply don't have the capacity like an adult does. In fact, there's a reason children seem to respond in the seemingly fight or flight mode. "Your teenager's brain is still developing and this miracle won't be even somewhat done until they are at least 25 years or older," said Carla Buck, a mental health therapist at Warrior Brain, who explains that children, unlike adults, process information with the emotional part of their brain.

14. ‘Learn within the joyful moments’

"If there was one thing I could tell a parent it would be not to lose sight of finding joy in the little things," said Tracy Ball, a speech language pathologist at Enable My Child. "They should always be striving to connect with their kids in these moments, so that they're more in tune with who they are. Before you can teach or engage them in anything, you have to understand what motivates and drives them."

'Why won't my Apple Watch turn on?': How to fix an Apple Watch that won't turn on or respond

smart watch apple watch

  • Don't panic if your Apple Watch won't turn on; there are several reasons why your Watch might not turn on, and most of them are easy to fix.
  • A drained battery is a common reason for an Apple Watch not to turn on; make sure you try a different charging cable and charger before assuming the issue is the Watch itself.
  • Various settings can make an Apple Watch appear dead or frozen, when in reality the Watch is doing exactly what it is supposed to.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

An Apple Watch that won't turn on is about as useful as a pen with no ink, the difference being that the smartwatch probably cost you $200 or more.

But don't worry — there are many reasons why an Apple Watch screen might not be turning on, and most of them have a simple fix.

Here we'll go through four of the most common reasons an Apple Watch won't turn on, and how to fix the problems. If none of these work, then you likely have a hardware issue that you won't be able to fix yourself, but that might be covered by your warranty.

So even if none of these fixes get your Apple Watch turned on again, don't toss the thing out. Bring it to the Apple Store for a professional inspection.

Check the battery, and check your Apple Watch charger

One common reason an Apple Watch won't turn on is simply that the battery is dead. Connect the Watch to its charger, and if that doesn't work, make sure you try a different charging cable and charger to see if your charger is faulty.

If your Apple Watch is still unresponsive after you try to power it with several different chargers, then move on to the next solution.

Perform a force restart

Your Apple Watch may be frozen. Forcing it to restart can unfreeze the operating system and get things working again.

Press and hold the two buttons (the larger, circular Digital Crown and the smaller oblong Side Button) simultaneously for 10 to 15 seconds.

After the Apple logo appears, release the buttons and wait another few seconds. When the watch turns back on, it should work smoothly again.

Read more:How to turn your Apple Watch on and off, or force-restart it for troubleshooting

Turn off Power Reserve mode

Your Apple Watch has a Power Reserve setting that, as the name implies, saves power. In this mode, only the time will display, and the watch will not unlock.

To exit this mode, press and hold the Side Button (thinner, oblong) for about 7 to 10 seconds. When the Apple logo appears, the watch is rebooting into its regular mode.

Turn off the Screen Curtain

The Screen Curtain mode keeps your Apple Watch's face darkened even when it's operating normally, only allowing interaction via voice.

To turn off the Screen Curtain, open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, then go to the General tab. From there, tap "Accessibility," then go to "VoiceOver." Finally, toggle Screen Curtain off (the button will be on the left).

The Apple Watch should work normally again.

We tried men's grooming products from Duke Cannon, a military-inspired body-care brand that’s giving back to veterans — here’s what it’s like to use

Duke Cannon

  • Duke Cannon is a military-inspired men's grooming brand that's equal parts fun to use and good quality.
  • The brand sells soaps, colognes, lip balm, and a lot more.
  • While it's military-inspired branding might seem like it's just novel for novelty's sake, we found the products to be great, and Duke Cannon supports real active-duty military members and veterans by donating 5% of its net profits to military causes.
  • We tested a wide range of Duke Cannon's products and ultimately liked everything, though admittedly, some of us were a little put off by the overtly macho messaging. Keep reading to find our thoughts.

The men's grooming industry is filled with brands that use overly-macho branding simply to dupe men into thinking they're products are worth buying.

Duke Cannon, an up-and-coming men's grooming brand, could easily fall under that category just based on its packaging — that is, if it weren't for the fact that its products are actually really great.

The brand's identity comes in the form of military-themed products and packaging, including huge brick-style soap bars used by GIs in the Korean War, solid colognes packaged inside military-style metal tins, and much more.

Duke Cannon

Rather than being a one-dimensional novelty brand, Duke Cannon actually supports its source of inspiration. Every year the brand donates 5% of its net profits to causes (typically one for each quarter of the year) that benefit veterans and active-duty military. In the past, Duke Cannon has donated to K9s for Warriors, Honor Flight, and Fisher House. On top of its yearly donations, the brand provides grooming products to smaller military-based organizations when their budget permits.

While some might find the branding to be clever and catchy, others might find it to be off-putting — and that's ok. Duke Cannons firmly backs the quality of its products, so we decided to put them to the test. After trying everything from the "Big Ass Brick of Soap" and the "offensively large lip balm" to the new line of colognes and cooling after-shave, we concluded they work well, no matter how we felt about the branding.

Shop all Duke Cannon men's grooming products now.

Check out out our full thoughts on the products we tested, below:

Duke Cannon Big Ass Brick of Soap

Duke Cannon Big Ass Brick of Soap, starting at $9 each

Before I had a chance to read the label, my first thought was that this was a huge bar of soap, and that's the exact impression Duke Cannon was going for. Modeled after the brick-style soap bars GIs used during the Korean War, the Big Ass Brick of Soap is a whopping 10 ounces, which is about three times the size of an average soap bar.

I had the chance to try a few different soaps, but my favorite turned out to be the Productivity bar. It has a fresh minty smell and steel-cut grains for grip. It also did a great job of keeping my skin soft.

Although a single brick probably won't fit in the palm of your hand, I didn't find the size to be excessive. The only gripe I could see someone having with the size is fitting it in a small soap dish. To that, I suggest you pull out your utility knife, chop a chunk off, and make it work. After all, the brand is inspired by military culture, so employing some ingenuity can go a long way. — Amir Ismael, Insider Picks reporter

Duke Cannon Cooling After-Shave Balm and Field Towels

Duke Cannon Cooling After-Shave Balm, $15

Duke Cannon Cold Shower Cooling Field Towels, $10

If I may be frank, the Duke Cannon marketing is a bit of a turn-off: in-your-face, overly macho messaging like "Not for clowns" and repeated reminders that this is stuff made for "real men." Ok, I get it, Duke Cannon makes grooming products for men who hate grooming products.

But ignore all that and what you actually have are some very good products with a great cause (a portion of proceeds go to US veterans). For this review, I tried the Cooling After-Shave Balm and the Cold Shower Cooling Field Towels.

As you might expect, the menthol-based Cooling After-Shave Balm will jolt you awake after a hot shave. There's aloe and shea butter in the formula, so overall, the balm is cooling and moisturizing and the scent isn't overpowering.

The Cold Shower Cooling Field Towels, came in handy during hot, humid summers when I sweat more than usual. I also like using them post-gym when I don't have time to hit the showers for a proper cleanse and I have to be somewhere, like work.

In short, I like the products and the cause, but I don't connect with the messaging — perhaps I'm not the target customer. — Les Shu, Insider Picks guides editor

Duke Cannon Balm 140° Tactical Lip Protectant

Duke Cannon Balm 140° Tactical Lip Protectant, $9

Much like the soap, Duke Cannon's lip balm is big in size or as the label reads, "offensively large." What I like best about the Cannon Balm 140° is that it doesn't go on shiny or greasy, and it still does a good job at keeping my lips moisturized. It has a unique blood-orange and mint flavor, which is a lot more pleasant compared to your average medicated lip balm that's packed with menthol. The $9 price tag might seem like a lot of money for a lip balm, but you have to remember that it's four times bigger than the lip balms you'd grab at a convenience store or pharmacy. If you can manage to not lose it as most people do with lip balms, you'll be in good shape. — Amir Ismael, Insider Picks reporter

Duke Cannon Prescott Proper Cologne

Duke Cannon Prescott Proper Cologne, $25

I'm by no means a sophisticated aromatics specialist, but all of the colognes I've used over the years happen to be rather expensive. Once I tried Duke Cannon's Proper Colognes, my perspective on how much is too much for cologne changed.

When dealing with colognes, one of the biggest factors to consider is whether it's an eau de parfum or an eau de toilette. The former has a higher fragrance concentration, while the latter will have a more faint scent. All of Duke Cannon's Proper Colognes are eau de parfum, which means a few sprays will last all day long — there's no need to go overboard with a bunch of sprays.

The best part about the cologne is that Duke Cannon breaks down each one with a profile and key scent components (this one is "woodsy, rich, with some green notes for balance"), so you won't have to completely guess what "Prescott" or any other name might smell like.

At $25 for one bottle or two for $40, I don't think I'll be going back to paying $60 and $70 a bottle for watered-down eau de toilette colognes just because of the brand name. — Amir Ismael, Insider Picks reporter

Duke Cannon Seneca Proper Cologne

Duke Cannon Seneca Proper Cologne, $25

Growing up in the age of Axe Body Spray, I always had a negative perception of colognes. I never took the time to find any brands I liked. After nearly 25 years of unscented living, the Duke Cannon Seneca cologne is the first fragrance I've ever owned. The brand's scent notes say that this one has an "aquatic foundation with some rich earthy and woodsy notes."

The first time I used the spray, I obviously put on way too much. While no one around me was complaining, the intensity of the aroma was unsettling. It wasn't an unpleasant smell, it was just overwhelming.

Since that learning experience, I've employed the Jonathan Van Ness "spray, delay, and walk away" method. This lightened approach doesn't last all day like a direct spritz, but it still helps me feel more confident in my scent as I get my day started.

As a cologne-novice, Duke Cannon's $25 cologne is a great starting point. It feels and smells like a high-end luxury brand, without the $75-plus price point. — Danny Bakst, Insider Picks content producer

Duke Cannon Randolph Proper Cologne

Duke Cannon Randolph Proper Cologne, $25

Coming from an Orthodox Jewish home, I never really encountered cologne. I believe my first introduction to "men's perfume" was when I'd go to the neighborhood mall and enter the well-ambianced Abercrombie and Fitch store. I'd take a gleeful whiff of that unmistakable Abercrombie signature cologne, then rummage through the store to find that perfect linen shirt with the iconic moose logo.

I recently got a bottle of Duke Cannon's Randolph Proper Cologne to test, and after weeks using it, I think it's a game-changer. Colleagues and even unfamiliar co-workers have given me compliments on the pleasant smell, which is musky and rich.

I believe the reason I enjoy the Randolph so much is that it's not so ... pervasive. I know some grandmothers, or as we call them, "bubbies," who wear so much perfume it totally defines their presence —  but the Randolph cologne gives off a pleasant, fresh scent without overwhelming me or my coworkers. — Shalom Goodman, Insider Picks SEO fellow

The best mops you can buy

$
0
0
  • Other than walls, the largest surface area in your home that needs to be cleaned regularly is the floor, and that means mopping.
  • Libman Spin Mop and Bucket gives you shiny clean floors in kitchens, bathrooms, and mudrooms, and can help keep wood floors gleaming.

For regular upkeep of hard surfaces — wood, laminate, concrete, stone, etc. — a mop is an effective tool, even if it's basic. But mopping is also a dreaded chore.

I'm here to tell you that, from years of research and testing, mopping doesn't have to be difficult. A tip to mopping success is to always sweep or vacuum first so that all of the loose soil is removed. That way, you're not just swishing it around only to find it later built-up in a corner. Another tip is to mop frequently so that it is a quick, weekly job. Waiting until the floor is caked with grime is what makes mopping such a backbreaker.

For clean floors, always use a clean mop. If the mop smells bad from bacteria growing in the mop head or looks really dirty, it is going to spread all of the yuck back over your floors. Luckily, many of today's mops have removable heads that can be easily washed and disinfected in a washer.

With the right tools and the right cleaners, mopping can be simple. Since all of the floors in my home require mopping, I've been testing mops and cleaning products for decades. And, as a home economist for companies and publications, you can be assured that I'm always looking for the most effective, easiest to use, and the best value in products.

Here are the best mops you can buy in 2019:

Updated on 08/30/2019 by Les Shu: Updated links, formatting, and prices. Added related buying guides.

The best mop overall

With the Libman Spin Mop and Bucket you can clean every hard surface floor in your home with the same mop, from dry-dusting hardwood to wet mopping sticky kitchen messes.

If you have multiple types of hard surface floors to clean in your home, it can be expensive to buy several different mops and frustrating to store them. With the Libman Spin Mop and Bucket, you can clean every floor with just one mop.

Libman combined a deep-cleaning microfiber mop and a mop bucket with a stainless-steel spin chamber to give you everything you need for mopping. The microfiber mop works great as both a dry-dust mop and a slightly damp mop for hardwood floors. Then, with the right cleaning solution, it is perfect for scrubbing dirty floors in the bathroom and kitchen. The head is removable from the handle and can go straight into the washing machine to be cleaned.

I am particularly impressed with the durable, adjustable stainless-steel mop handle and the stainless-steel spin bucket. Other brands have plastic components that are more prone to breaking. With the lever system to activate the spinning mechanism, my hands never have to touch the mopping water and I can adjust the amount of moisture left in the mop head. I've been using it for many months with no issues. It is good to know that replacement mop heads are available if this one ever wears out.

Other owners seem to like the product as well. One Amazon shopper wrote, "I think the spin mechanism works great and find this very versatile and efficient. I see others who complain it breaks. No need to be treating the spin rinse like you are jacking up a car."

Pros: Simple to use for all hard surface floors, hands never have to touch water, easy to assemble, removable and replaceable mop head

Cons: Plastic lever can break if used with excessive force

The best budget mop

Want clean floors without breaking the bank? Libman Wonder Mop uses microfiber strips, wrings out easily (but keeps hands dry), and costs less than $10.

If you are looking for a good, basic mop, the Libman Wonder Mop is a great start. It is compact, the mop head can be removed and tossed in the washer for a good cleaning, the built-in wringer keeps your hands out of the cleaning solution, and it is inexpensive but durable.

I have owned a Wonder Mop for many years and found an amazing number of ways to use it beyond mopping the floor. Since the head is made of microfiber that attracts dust, I pull down the wringer sleeve to shorten the mop fibers into a "stiff brush." I then use the mop to reach corners that seem to attract every spider web and insect known to man. I've used the mop to absorb water from ice chests and to capture spills in car trunks. And, I've mopped a few floors as well.

Since I use it so often, I buy a couple of replacement heads so I can always be sure to have an extra for non-mopping use. When I do use it for regular mopping, I find that with hot water and a good floor cleaner, the mop does a very good job.

The majority of Walmart customers who reviewed the Wonder Mop gave it 5 stars. One customer wrote, "I have puppies in my kitchen and needed a mop that would be easy to use and would actually clean up accidents on the floor ... and would be durable and long-lasting. The Libman Wonder Mop does everything that I need it to do and allows me to rinse, wring, and clean the floors without ever having to get my hands wet or dirty."

Pros: Microfiber head is removable and machine washable, wringing action keeps hands dry, can be used wet or dry, the mop head is replaceable

Cons: Wringer twisting action can be difficult for someone with limited hand and wrist movement

The best mop for wood floors

Easy to use and a top performer, the Swiffer WetJet Wood Mopping Kit gives you everything you need for shiny, streak-free wood floors.

Whether you have solid hardwood or engineered hardwood floors, the Swiffer WetJet Wood Mop will make cleaning them a breeze. With disposable cleaning pads and an all-in-one mop and cleaning solution, it is a no-mess, no-fuss cleaning system.

Hardwood floors can easily be ruined if you don't clean them correctly. They don't stand up well to regular mopping with a strong cleaner and lots of water. Instead, when muddy tracks and spills happen, a delicate touch is best. As with any floor, they must be swept, vacuumed, or dry-dusted before any cleaning with a mop.

I love the Swiffer WetJet Wood Mopping Kit for many reasons. The pads are disposable so I can begin each cleaning session with a fresh surface. The cleaning solution is "built-in" to the mop so with just a touch of the battery-operated micro-mist spray, I can add the solution to the floor while I mop. And, as a bonus, the nozzles are illuminated so I can see just how much solution is hitting the floor and check if the area is dry after mopping.

When you purchase a Swiffer WetJet Wood Kit, you get the power mop, five mopping pads, a bottle of wood floor cleaner, and four batteries. You can easily buy refill bottles and pads and there are cleaning solutions for other types of floors like vinyl, stone, and ceramic tile.

With a rating of 4.2 stars on Amazon, plenty of users have found the mop convenient as well. If you have problems with the Swiffer WetJet, Procter & Gamble's customer service is very helpful with tips to get you mopping again.

Pros: Compact, all-in-one mop and floor cleaner, cleaning solutions for other types of floors are interchangeable, refills simple to find, great customer service

Cons: Spray nozzles can become clogged if the mop isn't used regularly, cleaning pads aren't reusable, pricier to maintain

The best mop for ceramic tile floors

The grout between ceramic tiles is the toughest part of the floor to clean unless you have the Libman Nitty Gritty Roller Mop with Scrub Brush.

Ceramic tile floors in bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, and mudrooms are probably the easiest floors to clean. The tile doesn't absorb stains, doesn't scratch easily, and stands up to harsh cleaners. But just to make your life a bit more challenging, the tiles are put together with grout. Grout absorbs stains and doesn't react well to harsh cleaners that can make it become brittle and crack. What to do?

You need the Libman Nitty Gritty Roller Mop with Scrub Brush. The soft absorbent sponge roller with textured cleaning pads works great to remove spills and surface dirt on the tile. Then, the built-in scrub brush can be used to get rid of the grime on the grout without having to get on your hands and knees to scrub.

Here's a tip for getting that grout clean: dampen the floor and sprinkle a bit of baking soda on the stained areas before scrubbing with the mop brush (use the damp sponge mop to lift away the baking soda and dirt). Again, what I love is not having to get my hands wet with the mopping solution. The mop has a handle that activates rollers to squeeze out the water back into a bucket or utility sink.

Pros: Built-in scrub brush with sponge mop head, simple to use, rollers for squeezing out water

Cons: Sponge mop heads usually do not last as long as microfiber

The best mop with disposable pads

If you don't have space for a broom, mop, and bucket, the Swiffer Sweeper Dry and Wet is a good choice.

The best mopping results come from getting rid of dry loose dirt and hair first before you wet mop. With the Swiffer Sweeper Dry and Wet Mopping kit, you have everything you need at hand to take care of hard surface floors. The kit comes with a lightweight, easy-to-assemble sweeper, seven dry disposable cloths, and three wet disposable cloths.

I'll say up front that the Swiffer Sweeper Dry and Wet Mopping is not going to tackle floors that are really dirty. If you have lots of pets and kids who leave muddy footprints and spills, you need a heavy-duty mop. But, for light soil and quick cleanups, this is the ticket. There is no fuss, no mop bucket, and no need for additional cleaning solutions. I use mine all the time in my guest bedrooms and bathroom that don't get daily use.

Once you buy the starter kit, refills are available everywhere. Swiffer just introduced Heavy Duty Wet Pads and Dry Pads refills that trap even more soil if you have been lax between cleanings.

With more than 2,500 reviews on Amazon, the kit has a 4.4-star rating. It's a tried-and-true cleaning product that has been around for a long time.

Pros: Simple to use, no additional floor cleaner or water solution needed, refill pads readily available

Cons: Does not clean heavy soil effectively, refills can be costly

farfetch

  • Treating yourself to a luxury fashion item should be a fun experience, but sometimes you don't want to go into a store.
  • Luckily, we have a world of online shopping at our fingertips. Understandably though, when you're spending a lot of money, you want to do your due diligence and make sure where you're shopping is reputable, has legitimate products, and good customer service.
  • We did all of that research for you and came up with six retailers that offer great selections of high-end wear for both men and women. They include Shopbop, East Dane, Matches Fashion, Farfetch, Net-A-Porter, and Mr. Porter.
  • All of these retailers have simple shipping and return policies and user-friendly interfaces that'll get you excited about your purchase. Keep reading to find them below.

Online shopping is an amazing innovation. You get all of the excitement of adding new pieces to your wardrobe without any of the effort of getting to the store and trying things on under the horribly artificial lighting of a dressing room. But, when you're spending a lot of money on luxury pieces, online shopping can actually be a little nerve wracking.

What if the piece looks nothing like it does online? What if the return policy is expensive or just a hassle? When you're dropping hundreds of dollars or more on a shopping haul online, you probably want to make sure that everything will ship relatively quickly (who wants to wait weeks for what you could get in days) and is easy to exchange. And, of course, you want to peruse a great selection.

If luxury shopping is what you're looking for, we rounded up the six sites that you should check out. We've outlined what makes each stand out, the shipping and return policies they offer, and some of the notable labels you can find at each retailer.

Keep reading to see learn about six of the best spots to buy luxury fashion online:

The best shoe brands for kids

$

  • Rather than shopping around every time your child outgrows a shoe, you can make it easier on yourself by identifying which shoe brands are best suited to the various aspects of your child's life. Then simply size up as needed.
  • While many companies offer a range of footwear designed for different activities, it's rare to find a brand that makes multiple types of shoes that are each top quality.
  • Our choice for the best overall kids' shoe brand in Plae because their footwear manages to be versatile enough for most uses and comes in styles to suit just about every little foot out there.

Finding the best shoes for your kids isn't brain surgery, but it can still make your head hurt. This pair pinches their toes, that pair is too hard to put on, that one always falls off, and this one falls apart even before those ever-larger feet outgrow it.

Even once you find a pair of comfortable, supportive shoes that your kid can get on and off with relative ease, you've only solved one part of the puzzle. Your kid can't wear sneakers with a school uniform nor can they wear their dressy shoes in gym class. And you're not going to send them off on a playdate with the same shoes they wore during the hike on Sunday, are you? No, you parents, you're not looking for a pair of kids' shoes, you're looking for pairs aplenty.

Do yourself a favor and do what my wife and I have learned to do: Once you find a brand of shoes that works for a certain activity — one that looks the part, that's supportive and comfortable enough for extended wear, that your kid likes and can get on and off themselves — just park it right there. After switching around between various shoe brands every time our firstborn child outgrew a shoe, we now have things dialed in perfectly. When my son outgrows his go-to Plae sneakers, we replace them with the next size up. Each summer, we get him a pair of TOMS. When the school season starts up again, it's new Hush Puppies. And so on, you get the picture.

By identifying the best kids' shoe brands rather than specific shoes, you maintain a degree of choice as to the specifics (who gets that choice is up to your family dynamic) while knowing whatever style you pick, the make will suit, so to speak.

After years of trial and error and more than a few returns or premature donations, here is my take on the best kids' shoe brands for all the many facets of their lives.

Here are the best shoe brands for kids:

  • Best kids' shoe brand overall: Plae
  • Best kids' dress shoe brand: Hush Puppies
  • Best kids' casual shoe brand: TOMS
  • Best kids' outdoor shoe brand: Keen
  • Best kids' shoe brand for gym: Adidas

The best kids’ shoe brand overall

Plae shoes are comfortable from the first minute a kid slips them on, something most kids can do with ease thanks to the Velcro tabs.

If you are looking for a go-to shoe for your kid, you're looking in the right place with Plae. Their shoes are casual, comfortable, easy to get on and off, durable, and they come in styles ranging from sporty to more trendy. I should know, because my son is currently on his sixth pair of Plaes. And we already have two pairs in the next size waiting. (Seriously. We do)

The only negative thing I can say about this brand, in fact, is that other companies make better shoes for a few niche uses. Plae kids' shoes are not the best footwear option when it comes to use in the great outdoors. For hiking, camping, or general woodland fun, you can do better. Also, none of their shoes are quite dressy enough for formal occasions, so for a wedding or a coat-and-tie school uniform, you will probably have to look elsewhere.

But for general everyday wear, Plae shoes are exemplary. Each pair we get for my kid are comfortable from minute one. He has been able to get his Plaes on and off by himself since about the time he turned 4 thanks to the dual-tab Velcro system that holds them in place. This helps build his independence and saves us time when we're trying to get his less-cooperative toddler sister ready as well.

Perhaps the best testament I can give to these shoes is that 9 out of 10 times, if we're headed out for an errand, a casual meal, to a relative's house, or any of our dozen everyday destinations, my kid always chooses his Plae shoes.

The shoes come in high tops and low tops (and in water shoes and other varieties, but that's a story for another day — we're talking about their core offerings) and in all sorts of colorways, from muted to flashy and colorful. And prices are very fair, from $34.95 to $74.95.

One of the coolest things about Plae shoes is that the dual Velcro tabs are removable and interchangeable, so you can customize the shoe. If you want to take that to the next level, Plae even offers a service where they will print a photo or design you upload to their site onto tabs they'll send you. So for $20, your kid could be walking around with a photo of the family dog or even one of their own illustrations right there on their feet.

I wish Plae shoes were water-resistant, which they're not, and that they didn't look dirty so quickly when worn in certain conditions. But they go through the washer and dryer just fine, and we have yet to discard a pair due to wear and tear before they're outgrown.

Pros: Reliable comfort without break-in period, interchangeable and custom tabs, multiple styles available

Cons: Soak through quickly in rain or puddles, clearly show dirt

The best kids’ dress shoe brand

Hush Puppies shoes have the feel of a comfortable, supportive sneaker while looking like formal shoes suitable for use with a pair of pressed slacks or a pleated school uniform skirt.

For years, this brand was totally off my radar. Then I got a pair of Hush Puppies myself, and the company came into our lives in a major way because of one word: comfort. This brand consistently makes some of the most comfortable shoes my kids, my wife, or I have worn.

When it comes to many of the adult shoes Hush Puppies makes, I can say they are sharp-looking to. For kids' shoes, Hush Puppies doesn't have the most trendy options out there, but they do make several shoes styled perfectly for dressier occasions that wear as comfortably as any sneaker.

As we adults know all too well, formal shoes are often uncomfortable, especially when they're new and have not been broken in. By being comfortable from the first wearing, Hush Puppies kids' dress shoes solve two problems at once: They are perfect for extended, daily wear with a school uniform, offering the support many formal shoes lack, and they are also suitable for only occasional use at weddings or holiday dinners, feeling good even without a break-in period. Plus, they're reasonably priced from $37.95 to $64.95.

I also appreciate the fact that the company offers several dressy shoes that use Velcro closures or that are slip-ons, because without a parent there to help out with an outfit change after gym class, the easier the shoes are to get on, the better.

If you can get past the fact that many Hush Puppies look a bit dated, you will have found a brand that will never cause a fight between you and your kid. And stick with them, they have cool shoes for teens and grown-ups.

Pros: Very comfortable for dress shoes, many options that are easy to get on and off, durable construction

Cons: Not the most stylish kids' shoe brand

The best kids’ casual shoe brand

TOMS offers casual shoes in so many styles you will need to set aside an hour or two just to find pairs you and the kids like.

Set aside a chunk of spare time, because the vast, varied selection of kids' shoes TOMS offers deserves your careful consideration. The company has dozens of options, and many come in myriad prints and materials. If you're willing to spend the time, you can surely find a perfect pair of shoes for your little ones.

From their classic slip-on canvas shoes to lace-ups to Velcro to round-the-heel buckles, they have all sorts of styles that are suitable for boys and girls of a wide age range. And with pairs well over $60 and well under $30, their shoes suit most family budgets too.

While TOMS offers plenty of near-dress shoes, it doesn't really offer any that are going to work with a school uniform or a wedding outfit. And while comfortable, their shoes aren't supportive enough for high-energy activities like sports or hiking. But for everyday life, from playdates to running errands with mom or dad to travel and beyond, it's hard to beat these shoes, especially when you can always find a pair that matches the (casual) occasion.

TOMS has collections made just for babies, a line of "Tiny Shoes" for kids age 1 to 5, and youth shoes for the older kids (these start to look more like their adult shoes), so can have your kid's feet in TOMS from cradle to college. Then they can start buying their own shoes.

Pros: Huge catalog to choose from, many styles come in myriad prints, company donates to charity

Cons: Not as supportive as traditional sneakers, some pairs quite expensive

The best kids' outdoor shoe brand

Keen is not a kid-focused footwear company, they're a company that makes high-quality outdoor footwear for everyone. They bring the same craftsmanship to shoes and boots for men, women, and the littlest adventurers in the family.

Far too often kids' shoes and boots are low quality compared to active footwear made for adults. Sure, kids outgrow shoes fast, and it can be a bummer to spend big bucks on short-lived gear, but when it comes to hiking, wintertime activities, or any adventure around the water, your kids need shoes and boots of the same quality as you'd demand for yourself. And that's what you'll get with Keen.

You know you're in the right place for great outdoor shoes for kids when you hover over the "Kids" tab on Keen's website. One of the ways they have their footwear organized is "Shop by Activity," under which you will see Hiking, Water, Winter, and Travel. These are the exact same options by which you can sort adult shoes as well.

Keen's makes multiple kids' shoes ideal for outdoor use because they are waterproof, snug, and supportive, and because they stay on a kid's foot even when he's charging around through underbrush, mud, puddles, and more. During a recent camping trip, my son's Keens kept his feet dry despite multiple steps in standing water, and they stayed firmly on his feet during many a hike over mixed terrain.

In fact, my son's Keen sneakers stay on his feet so well they're actually kind of hard to get off, and at present, he has yet to be able to put them on without assistance. But while on his feet, he said, unprompted, the shoes are "just as comfortable as my Plaes," and that's saying something for a kid who wears Plae sneakers more than any other shoe.

Keen's kids shoes are decently priced, usually just north of $50. Their kids' winter boots are a bit steep, usually over $75 and often near $90, but they will keep those little feet warm and dry and those ankles and arches supported.

Pros: High-quality materials, waterproof, supportive and durable

Cons: Hard for kids to get on and off without help, some pairs too narrow

The best kids’ shoe brand for gym

Small feet deserve just the same support, rebound, and injury protection as adult feet, and that's what little feet get with running and training shoes from Adidas.

The conventional wisdom goes that a runner needs new shoes every 300 miles to ensure proper support and protection. When, though, does this 300-plus mile standard commence? When an athlete turns 21? Maybe 18? Maybe younger? I say the right age for a high-quality running shoe is whenever your kid starts doing any regular running, be it in gym class, team sports, or simply because he or she loves being in motion.

If your kid is anywhere near as active as most children are, there's a good chance they will hit that 300-plus mile mark before outgrowing a pair of shoes, so why not treat their feet as well as you would your own?

Adidas offers multiple pairs of kids' shoes with the same informed design and excellent materials they use for their adult athletic shoes. This includes features like the proprietary Cloudfoam cushioning in the midsole that absorbs shock and creates excellent rebound. It means grippy outsoles that minimize slips and keep a youngster moving at top speed, and without marking surfaces, either. And it means shoes that fit securely and support ankles and arches.

Some of Adidas kids' shoes are slip-ons, like the Rapidrun shoes ($60) that have a mesh upper, fabric collar, and two pull tabs to help a kid get them on. Others, like the Fortarun shoes ($55), use a traditional lacing system. Then of course adidas makes all sorts of more sport-specific kids' shoes, like Copa Firm Ground Cleats ($55) for soccer.

Adidas kids' shoes are well priced when you look through the lens of genuine sport-ready footwear, though their genuine performance apparel is a bit limiting due to style — you wouldn't pair most of these shoes with a casual outfit as you can others on our list. But that's not what we're considering in this category anyway.

Pros: Excellent cushioning and support, some pairs slip on with ease, good traction

Cons: Not suitable for many casual outfits

We also considered:

There are a lot of companies out there making shoes for kids, and many of them make fine footwear indeed. These brands didn't make the main list not because their kids' shoes are subpar, but because the ones we did choose just offer a little something extra.

In other words, if you go with shoes from this also-ran list, you'll be getting good stuff, don't you worry.

  • Florsheim has kids' dress shoes that are classic and look great with slacks of many colors and textures, but they are not initially comfortable. The break-in period can be unpleasant, as great as they will look and feel once worn in some. Prices range from $50 to $90.
  • Merrell was a strong consideration for best kids' shoes for outdoor use, and they make a range of boots and shoes that are comparable to Keen. The immediate comfort of Keen's hiking shoes, however, was the leg up in this case. They truly were comfortable on my son's feet the very first time we got them on him. Prices are very reasonable from $22 to $60.
  • Dream Pairs offers plenty of very low cost kids' shoes in a range of styles ($17 to $23), but you can expect reduced quality with those lower prices. I'd recommend them primarily for the fastest growing of feet, or for shoes that will only be worn on occasion.

Burning Man

Nearly 80,000 people have swarmed to a temporary city set up in the middle of the Nevada desert for a 30-year-old annual tradition known as Burning Man.

Burning Man welcomed attendees to its site — dubbed Black Rock City— starting this past weekend for the nine-day festival. Thousands set up campers and tents as they prepared for a week of partying and enjoying art. The celebration culminates with the burning of an effigy, known as "the Man."

The Black Rock City "playa" is enormous. So big, in fact, that it can be seen from space. A satellite, belonging to space technology company Maxar Technologies, captured images of the Burning Man site on the day it welcomed attendees, and the photos show just how much of a production the festival is each year.

Take a look at some of the images taken from space of Burning Man 2019:

With 80,000 people swarming the site, thousands of cars lined up to enter Burning Man. People are expected to pack whatever they need, since you can't buy anything on-site (except ice and coffee).

Some of the massive art installations, made of wild and bright colors, can be spotted in the satellite images. The theme of this year's Burning Man is metamorphoses, and the artwork adheres to that theme.

One of Burning Man's key principles is "Leaving No Trace," which means that attendees must take everything they bring with them. The desert must look as attendees found it — empty.

Novorizhskoye Moscow

  • In the suburbs of Moscow, two winding highways are home to some of Russia's most expensive real estate.
  • In Rublyovka, the ritzy suburb surrounding the Rublyovskoye highway, government officials and wealthy businesspeople live in homes that cost up to $80 million, hidden behind high walls lined with security cameras.
  • And in Novorizhskoye, newly built luxury gated communities attract affluent families and celebrities who live in homes that start at $1 million and go up to $50 million.
  • The Rublyovskoye and Novorizhskoye highways represent different versions of Russian wealth.

Two highways in the suburbs of Moscow are home to some of Russia's most expensive real estate.

The Rublyovskoye highway and its surrounding area, called Rublyovka, is an ultra-exclusive, leafy suburb home to government officials and old money. Homes can cost up to $60 or $80 million, according to Leonid Nikitskiy, the head of country real estate at Moscow Sotheby's International Realty.

And in Novorizhskoye, newly built luxury gated communities attract affluent families and celebrities who live in homes that start at $1 million and go up to $50 million, according to Nikitskiy.

On a trip to Russia in June, I drove down both of these highways with Nikitskiy.

Here's what it was like.

Rublyovskoye and Novorizhskoye are two winding highways in the suburbs of Moscow that are home to some of Russia's most expensive real estate.

On a trip to Russia in June, I drove down both of these highways with Leonid Nikitskiy, the head of country real estate at Moscow Sotheby's International Realty.

Rublyovka, the ritzy suburb surrounding the Rublyovskoye highway, is home to affluent businesspeople and government officials, including President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.

As we drove down the two-lane, tree-lined highway, I spotted Range Rovers, Land Rovers, Mercedes, Porsches, BMWs, and a Rolls Royce.

The neighborhoods of Rublyovka are filled with "men with old money and young women who hunt these men," Nikitskiy told me.

When wealthy Russians, such as Siberians with diamond and oil money, come from elsewhere in the country to buy homes in the Moscow area, they only consider Rublyovka.

"It's royal. It's like Chanel," Nikitskiy said. "There's nothing else."

But a major pitfall of living in Rublyovka is the traffic, Nikitskiy says. It's only a two-lane road, and it is shut down almost every day to make way for convoys of government cars carrying the president or the prime minister between their countryside estates and the Kremlin. (Novo-Ogaryovo, Putin's suburban residence, is tucked away behind high walls on a street off the Rublyovskoye highway.)

"You can have a multimillion-dollar house, a Bentley, a Ferrari, but you still have to sit in traffic," Nikitskiy said.

Driving through Rublyovka made it clear what super-rich Russians value most: privacy and security.

I couldn't get a good look at any of the homes because most were surrounded by thick walls lined with security cameras.

"Many bought their homes here in the 1990s when it was a dark time for Russia," Nikitskiy told me. "They built very high walls and security cameras because they were scared."

Even Sotheby's International Realty couldn't get me into any homes for sale in the area because the owners are too private.

Homes in the area can cost up to $80 million, according to Nikitskiy. In the lavish Mayendorf Gardens suburb of Rublyovka, a 12,000-square-foot mansion with a swimming pool, sauna, and staff apartments is for sale for $62.4 million.

But the most expensive homes may not even be publicly listed, he said.

"As a rule, transactions over $40-$50 million are not advertised but are realized among a narrow circle of people and their representatives," Nikitskiy said.

In addition to multimillion-dollar homes hidden away in the trees, Rublyovka has many upscale restaurants and shopping malls.

We passed by Barvikha Luxury Village, which includes Ferrari and Maserati car dealerships, as well as clothing boutiques like Prada, Gucci, Giorgio Armani, and Dolce & Gabbana.

More striking to me than the luxury shops was the sheer seclusion and inaccessibility of living in Rublyovka. If you live there, you likely have generational wealth, according to Nikitskiy.

Novorizhskoye, on the other hand, is home to celebrities and affluent families who want an easy commute to Moscow but the same fresh air and greenery that can be found in Rublyovka.

According to Nikitskiy, the area around Novorizhskoye highway is becoming more popular partially because it's much wider than Rublyovka, making it quicker to drive back and forth to Moscow.

From parts of Novorizhskoye, you can drive to Moscow without stoplights, Nikitskiy said, and some people take helicopters from their suburban homes to a heliport just outside of Moscow, and then drive the remaining 15 minutes into the city.

In recent years, Novorizhskoye has seen an explosion of development by Villagio Estates, a luxury real-estate developer that claims to be the largest in Russia.

Villagio Estates has built up several luxe gated communities along the Novorizhskoye highway that have names like "Cote d'Azur" and "Madison Park."

On my trip to Russia, I spent a day getting a tour of some of these estates, which have perfectly manicured lawns, sparkling fountains, and imported sand from the Maldives on manmade beaches. Many homes are surrounded by hedges and ornate gates.

While these communities were also protected behind gates, the houses themselves were much more visible and accessible than the ultra-private, high-security communities in Rublyovka.

I got the feeling that people who live in these communities don't mind showing off their wealth a little bit — to their similarly wealthy neighbors, that is.

Prices in Novorizhskoye are quickly catching up to Rublyovka, Nikitskiy said. Home prices start at around $1 million and can go up to $40 or $50 million.

An opulent 10-bedroom home with an indoor pool and peacock-filled gardens in a Novorizhskoye suburb is for sale for about $25 million.

While the communities surrounding both highways were clearly affluent, based on what I saw, Rublyovka is clearly more "old money" while Novorizhskoye represents a younger and flashier type of wealth.

'It was a pretty good run': Musician Ben Folds on what it's like to be an aging rocker

Ben Folds

  • Musician Ben Folds has seen massive success across genres. He was the first ever artistic advisor to the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in 2017.
  • As part of the Ben Folds Five, he released pop albums. Now, however, he's come to see popular music as the music for the "mating age" and learned that artists should fear the known, not the unknown.
  • The following is an excerpt from his new book, "A Dream About Lightning Bugs: A Life Of Music And Cheap Lessons." In it, he interrogates the role of the "aging rocker."
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

It's a legitimate worry for an aging rocker that your music will become so out of date and toxically uncool, it will get your kids beaten up at school. But, hey, it's your job. I used to see all those old guys with stringy long hair, pouring their fat butts into leather pants year after year, and think to myself, That'll never be me! That'll never be me! But it's really understandable. How fair is it that, like in dance or sports, a rock-and-roll artist can expect to have to retire in his or her mid-30s? That's just the way it is.

But there's another world out there for them, if they're so lucky. They can become a Heritage Artist and keep reliving the magic, make the house payments, and send their kids to private schools with a security guard.

It's important to remember that after an artist has made a few records, the entire music business and its audience must decide whether there's really any space on the shelf for this artist anymore. Any new record you release after your first few albums can be used as evidence that it's time for you to go. It's not evil, or personal. It's that there's so much new music and so little time and space. We all have to make room in our lives for new artists and new ideas. But an artist like me, in his second decade of making records, better not get stuck in any ruts.

As satisfying and safe as it can feel to have mastered a craft, it also can be a sign that it's time to learn a new trick. It's the known that the artist should fear, not the unknown. All that terrain that's been well illuminated should scare you artistically. Because the known is where boredom takes root. Staying in the well-lit areas is what gets you stuck. I felt a strong urge to lurch into the dark and leave pop music behind, but of course we all resist change, we all want to keep our job. So what about the middle-aged making pop music?

Read more: I run a luxury adventure travel company, but I refuse to hire anyone with a travel background to work there. Here's why.

Pop music is the soundtrack for the mating age

Sure, it's allowed. But let's be honest about what pop, or popular, music is. It's music for the mating age. It's a soundtrack for that yearning, that youthful anger, those ideals and inside jokes of the teenagers and young adults as they experience the rough ride together. It fills an important need. It helps get us through to adulthood

Pop music can be a life jacket, a sexy security blanket, a hipster Hallmark card. And it communicates very real things. It also requires serious craft and is a competitive business, worthy of great respect. Pop music saved my a-- as a kid, paid the bills in my earlier career. And I love to make fun of it. Good pop music, truly of its moment, should throw older adults off its scent. It should clear the room of boring adults and give the kids some space.

If you're post-mating age, you might enjoy new pop music to a degree, but it's not really for you. Post-mating-age adults have a whole other heap of problems, the likes of which the sickest beat and saddest rhyme are woefully unequipped to solve. You don't need an earful of sexy when navigating your aging parents into an old folks' home or when you're worried your kids might be trying drugs at their delinquent friend's house. There is music that speaks to adults, but it probably ain't mating beats. When they're in heat, they usually reach for music of their own era, the stuff they consumed back when they were mating age. They spring for high ticket prices for a magical night with their favorite Heritage Artist.

A DREAM ABOUT LIGHTNING BUGS_Folds

I, for one, don't feel the need to try and relate to younger music that's not for me anymore. I appreciate it, but I don't try to like it or relate to it. Why should I? I view pop music the way I do a children's television show, with its cartoons and bright colors — it's for kids. I'm no more riveted by a grumpy puppet who lives in a garbage can than I am by a horny auto-tuned journal entry edited over a lonesome computer loop. I don't hang around playgrounds, so why, at my age, should I be wandering around Burning Man shirtless, tripping on ecstasy? Or speaking in vocal fry like middle-aged men and women I overhear every day in the coffee shop down the block? If I'm being really honest? Really feeling my age and unafraid to admit it? Here we go: I'm actually repulsed by overly computerized music, which dominates pop music now. It makes me feel ill.

Canned bass drum that dry-humps my eardrums four-on the floor in the back seat of an Uber while an overly gymnastic auto-tuned vocal holds me down ... It just isn't my cup of tea. There's something sad about a singer pouring his heart out over a quantized machine. That heartless machine would keep playing out for days in an empty room, long after the singer keeled over. Hey, kid! That loop doesn't love you! I want to tell the singer. I'm reminded of those horse insemination machines where the poor stud is humping away into a horsey robot. It's just sad. Now, that's some old-man s--- I just laid down, but it's about being honest, because I know that I cannot grow artistically if I am beholden to the opinions of an industry I've outgrown. If I require the approval of children.

I have equal respect for and interest in Cardi B and Teletubbies, which is to say I have incredible respect for both, because they're both brilliant, and little interest in either, because I've aged out of it. I too made my mark in the business of mating music of a now-bygone era, but I wasn't nearly as good at it as the two examples I just mentioned. Still, my music was peddled by purveyors of fine procreation hullabaloo, and I happily signed on the dotted line. It was a pretty good run.

"We threw him off the scent. It's what kids do."

Back when we started, there were sometimes a few middle-aged people in attendance for the early Ben Folds Five shows. They came hoping to see some younger musicians doing "real music," but they often walked away disappointed. They came for those seventies' chords and mannerisms that warmed their hearts, only to find we used them all wrong. I recall one lone 40-something man who pulled me aside after some gig in the early days and told me, "I saw Elton back in 1971, and the big difference was that everything wasn't some kind of inside joke to him. It was real music. He meant it. When he stood on the piano it was a celebration, it was triumphant. You do it and it has to be so ironic and clever. You boys need to tighten up. What was all that distortion? I had high hopes before tonight." I told him I was sorry he didn't enjoy it. But, honestly, mission accomplished. We threw him off the scent. It's what kids do.

Ben Folds Five happily made glaring mistakes, approaching great craft with the attitude of the drunkest two- chord punk band. We sounded our mutant mating call. No different from any generation before. So as I approached Heritage Artist age, I had to decide: Did I want to adopt the affectations of the new generation in hopes of remaining relevant, begging for attention with each new release? Or did I want to get out of that business, head to Vegas, and just keep reliving my old shit? Well, somehow neither of those binary options seemed very attractive. So, then what? What to do with the Script? The answer was in the dark somewhere, where it always is. After all, the dark is where we mated for the first time.

Ben Folds is an American musician who has created an enormous body of genre-bending music that includes pop albums with Ben Folds Five, multiple solo albums, a classical piano concerto, and collaborations with artists ranging from Regina Spektor to William Shatner. Folds, who was also a judge for five seasons on NBC's acclaimed a capella show The Sing-Off, was named the first ever artistic advisor to the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in 2017. He is an outspoken champion for arts education and music therapy, serving on the distinguished Artist Committee of Americans for the Arts, and as chairman of the national ArtsVote 2020 initiative.

How to sew an original hem on jeans

  • Fit is everything when it comes to a polished, professional-looking pair of pants.
  • Properly hemmed pants won't drag across the floor, so your pant legs won't get ruined.
  • Hemming pants with a sewing machine or by hand is easier than it looks.
  • Here's how to hem pants with or without a sewing machine.

One of the simplest things you can do to look more professional and polished is to hem your dress pants or jeans when they're too long. It's easy to spot when pants are too long. They're either dragging on the floor, or the break (the fabric that pools on top of the foot on the pant front) is too big.

The good news is that hemming pants is not hard and it can save you money. The average cost to hem a pair of dress pants averages about $15. If you are like me and have short legs or you have fast-growing kids, you are spending a lot of money on pant hems.

Hemming pants is so easy that leg length should never stand between you and an awesome pair of pants you snag on sale. If you know how to hem pants, then you've got the advantage every time you go shopping. In this guide, we break down how to hem pants and everything you need to do it with or without a sewing machine.

How to hem pants in a few steps:

  1. Measure your inseam to find the right length.
  2. Remove the original hem.
  3. Measure the amount of excess fabric and trim it.
  4. Fold the new hem.
  5. Sew new hem by hand or with a sewing machine.

Here's what you need to hem pants:

How to measure the inseam

How to hem jeans

The proper length for your pants will depend on the shoes you plan to wear with them. The shoes will change the amount of space available on the front of the foot for a hem to hang freely. Put on the shoes you plan to wear the most with the particular pair of pants are hemming. To measure your inseam, measure the length from the crotch seam to the bottom of your shoe — this is your inseam.

Remove the original hem

  • Remove the stitching from hemline that is already there with a seam ripper.
  • Unfold the hem completely so that it hangs loose.
  • Iron it flat to remove the creases.

Measure

How to hem jeans

  • Turn the pants inside out and lay the pants flat on a surface.
  • Measure the same length of your inseam, starting from the crotch of the pants.
  • Mark the proper inseam length on the pants plus one inch of seam allowance.

Trim

How to hem a jean

Use a rotary cutter and ruler (or scissors) to cut off the excess fabric.

Measure Hem

How to hem jeans

  • Set your sewing gauge to ½ inch.
  • Fold up the edge of the pant leg to ½ inch.
  • Use to the sewing gauge to make sure the fold is ½ inch on both sides of the fold.
  • Press in place with the iron.

Fold the hem

  • Fold the edge of the pant leg up ½ inch again.
  • Double check the width of the fold with the sewing gauge.
  • Once fold is evenly ½ inch wide, pin the hem in place.
  • Repeat on the other pant leg.

Sew the hem with a sewing machine

How to hem jeans

  • Load your bobbin and top spool with the same color of thread.
  • Set your machine to medium straight stitch.
  • Stitch a ¼ inch seam allowance from the top of the hem.
  • Go all the way around. Remove the pins as you go.
  • When you get to the beginning, lock stitch in place, then remove from the machine and cut the excess thread.
  • Repeat with the other pant leg.
  • Finish by turning the pants right side out and press the hem.

Sew the hem by hand

How to hem jeans

If you don't have a sewing machine, no worries. Hand sewing a hem is simple and won't take up too much time. Just a needle and thread will give you the same perfectly hemmed pair of pants.

  • Cut a matching piece of thread that's double the length to go around one leg.
  • Thread your needle and tie the cut ends together so that you're sewing with two strands.
  • Use the pins to hold the hem in place.
  • Insert your needle into the seam allowance on the inside leg to start your thread and pull it through.

How to hem jeans

  • Insert the needle in the back of the folded edge and bring the needle out about 1/8 inch from the edge and pull it through.
  • Pick up a few threads of the fabric right below (but not where you first inserted the thread) the stitch and slide your needle through.
  • About ⅜ inch up from where you pulled the thread through, insert the needle in the back of the folded edge and pull the needle out the front.
  • Repeat around the pant leg. You should only see minimal stitch marks on the right side of the pant legs.
  • Once you are done with the hem, press in place with the iron.

I spent six years interviewing 21 billionaires. I found that the 1% are happier than the average person — and it's not just because they're rich.

rich person

Over half a decade ago I made myself take a journey to meet with the best entrepreneurs in the world and find out the secrets of their extreme business performance. It took six years of my life, 21 self-made billionaires, several travels around the globe, and the involvement of 80 people to make it a reality.

At the end, I found a set of 20 principles common to all the billionaires that enabled them to become so outrageously successful in business. I describe them in the book, "The Billion Dollar Secret." But probably the most common question I've been asked when writing this book was "Are billionaires happy?"

People generally tend to represent one of the two extreme opinions. The first one is, "Money will make you happy;" the other is, "Those poor billionaires, they are so rich but unhappy."

What I found out in my research is that money itself doesn't change much about your ability to be happy — it just magnifies your personality. Happy people become happier and unhappy people become miserable when they get wealthy.

Money doesn't give you happiness. It gives you choice. And a lot of money gives you a lot of choice — but not everybody can handle that choice.

So, are billionaires happy? The short answer is "Yes, but not for the reasons you may think."

The same personality traits that make billionaires money also help them build happy relationships.

First, there are many downsides of this level of business success. To become a billionaire means a huge investment of time, energy, and effort. It means committing decades of your life and working 24/7 at the expense of your private and family life. It means not being able to take vacation or having leisure time. It means huge burden of responsibility and stress. And, yes, you are lonely with your problems. There is nobody around who could help you with the problems of the magnitude you cope with.

Despite this price that billionaires pay, some of their personality traits are helpful both in making a lot of money and in making them happy. Billionaires are experts in human psychology, which allows them to build harmonious long-term relationships that contribute to their happiness.

Read more: An entrepreneur who spent 5 years interviewing 21 self-made billionaires asked every single one how they made their first million dollars — here's what they said

In contrast to public opinion about the rich, the self-made billionaires I have met and interviewed with have simple, even uneventful private lives. They choose a tolerant partner who covers their back and supports them in what they do. Traditional family gives them stability, which is good both for business performance and for a high level of self-comfort.

Frank Hasenfratz, a Canadian self-made billionaire and founder of Linamar, considers having a supportive partner an essential condition to business success.

Billionaires love their work and the opportunities it creates.

Billionaires love what they do. They enjoy their business and the industry they're in. Naturally, this makes you happier than having to do what you don't like. And billionaires are free in the sense that they work not because they have to, but because they like doing it and find it important.

More money means also more control over their lives and environment. Their abilities and wealth give them more options to react to negative situations in their lives and create positive outcomes. What makes Jack Cowin, the Australian self-made billionaire, happy is "being able to control my own agenda."

Read more: An entrepreneur who interviewed 21 billionaires says the same 6 habits helped make all of them successful

Billionaires are pretty happy with who they are and proud with what they have accomplished. And they can be fully themselves, a luxury many of us can't afford.

Billionaires are creators. They make things happen. Seeing their thoughts materialize and positively contributing to the lives of other people and seeing them grow, succeed, and be happy gives billionaires fulfillment. And they get a lot of recognition and respect for it. Of course, this adds to their happiness. Michał Sołowow, the wealthiest person in Poland, told me, "What makes me happy is when I see the people I've touched are happy. That makes me tremendously happy and emotional."

Billionaires regularly practice habits that breed happiness.

Despite common belief, billionaires really appreciate the simple things of life. After all, they have tasted it all. One of the greatest enjoyments for Peter Hargreaves, an English self-made billionaire and the founder of Hargreaves Lansdown, is "digging vegetables for lunch on a Sunday morning."

And let's not forget other billionaire traits and habits that support happiness: belief, optimism, trust, having a purpose and following your mission, taking care of your health, being proactive, being yourself and not bending yourself, personal integrity, and giving back.

Of course, all of the above doesn't protect billionaires from personal tragedies like illness or grief after the loss of loved ones. And, of course, not all billionaires are happy. But considering all the factors, billionaires are on average happier than the rest of us for the above reasons.

9 best things to do at an airport when waiting out a flight delay

waiting for flight

  • Airlines have delayed flights more this summer than in 2018, according to CNBC.
  • If your flight is delayed, you can try to make the most of your extra time in the airport by visiting a lounge or grabbing a table at a high-end restaurant.
  • You can also use the time to catch up on work or research ways to receive financial compensation for your delayed flight.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Flight delays are a nuisance.

Not only are you at risk of missing a connecting flight or a crucial appointment, you end up having to spend more time in the airport. The summer of 2019 has already shaped up to be one of the worst for air travelers, as airlines have canceled or delayed flights and bumped passengers more than usual, according to CNBC

Read more:Here are all the ways being a flight attendant has changed in the last 50 years

While some places (read: New York City's LaGuardia) offer just a few restaurants to spend your time at, other airports have plenty of things to do for delayed passengers.

But even if the airport itself doesn't entertain you, you can still use your time wisely to get ahead at work or get some financial compensation from the delayed flight.

Here are the nine best things to do if your flight is delayed:

SEE ALSO: Here are all the ways being a flight attendant has changed in the last 50 years

Indulge in the airport's perks.

These days, airports offer a lot more than fast food joints and magazine stands.

From spas to swanky restaurants, there are plenty of amenities available if you want to splurge during your extended airport stay.

If you're in Qatar (and packed a bathing suit), head over to the swimming pool at the Hamad International Airport. In Hong Kong International, you'll find a golf course, IMAX Theater, and an aromatherapy spa.

Go duty-free shopping.

If you're traveling international and have some foreign currency left over, try heading to a duty-free store — or items bought in a country without tax.

While you always save money on taxes, prices for certain goods vary by airport and country, according to the price comparison website Duty Free Addict. Yet for items with high taxes outside the airport — like alcohol and tobacco— duty-free could be a good bet.

Some airports offer their own large selection of duty-free products you can't get in the country. If you were looking for a deal on French perfume, for instance, Paris' Charles de Gaulle Airport has good deals on Chanel, Hermès, and other high-end scents you can take with you in bottles over the 3.4-ounce requirement, according to The Points Guy.

Make a little extra money.

If your flight was delayed and the airline is at fault, you may qualify for compensation.

While weather delays or issues with air traffic control won't get you cash, losing your luggage or waiting on the tarmac for over three hours means you're entitled to some compensation from the airline.

The app AirHelp tracks flight delays and sees if there are ways to get you compensation. The service gets compensation for as much as $700, and helps both domestic and international passengers.

Try to get into an airport lounge.

If you're delayed as a result of an airline issue, you can see if they will give you a pass to the airport lounge.

Lounges are often more comfortable than other seated areas around the airport, plus offer free food and drinks. If you're going to be at the airport an extra couple of hours, you may as well be comfortable.

Airlines won't be immediately inclined to give you a pass, however, so Skyskanner recommends asking nicely.

Catch up on work.

Lifehacker writer Heather Yamada-Hosley said a flight layover offers time to catch up on work.

Her suggestions include:

  • Sorting through work emails in the airport so you can save time during your first day back from vacation.
  • Prepare your customs forms before you land.
  • Write a travel blog documenting your adventures while the memories are still fresh.

Take your kids to a play area.

If in case you locked away toys and other supplies in your luggage, many of the major airports in the US are kid friendly. Here are some of the best airports for children, according to to the blog Family Vacation Critic.

  • Chicago O'Hare International has 24/7 mothers rooms where you can nurse or relax with infants, plus an entrance to The Children's Museum of Chicago's play area.
  • The Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport has a children's play area with the option of exploring parts of a real plane.
  • Dulles International Airport has an aviation-themed play area developed by NASA. Kids can enjoy interactive games, slides, and educational games regarding air and space travel.
  • Miami International Airport can help your child or other passengers with special needs prepare for their flight in a controlled, safe environment. The program, called MIAair, is a "dress rehearsal" for the real flight that was developed in part by the University of Miami-Nova Southeastern University Center for Autism.

Fill up your water bottle.

While this might only take a few minutes during your potentially long flight delay, filling up your water bottle after having to dump it out in security will save you money.

Airports notoriously hike up prices for bottled water — sometimes as much as $5 for a bottle you can get for less than a buck at the gas station.

Plus, Business Insider's Caralynn Lippo said she fills up her bottle so she doesn't get dehydrated in the air and "have to ask for 45 of those tiny cups of water the flight attendants give you." Since air travel dehydrates your body and skin, make water your friend at the airport.

If your airport doesn't offer free WiFi, trade scrolling through your Instagram feed for flipping through a magazine.

Paying for airport WiFi can be a rip-off, says Smarter Travel. So if you have the option of paying for WiFi or using your time to unplug, choose the latter.

That being said, if you have emails to catch up on, there are hacks to get past the paywall. Smarter Travel recommends going to an airport Starbucks, which typically offers its own WiFi, or seeing if you can sit near a lounge that may have its own connection. Thrillist, meanwhile, says you can sometimes find WiFi passwords on Foursquare threads.

Exercise.

You're going to be on a flight sitting down for however many hours, so why not make good use of the time you get to walk around?

If you tire of taking laps around the airport, or don't want to veer too far from your gate, here are some exercises you should consider:

  • Do lunges on the moving walkway: "The people mover that makes it easy to traverse miles of airport terminal space can also be an effective substitute for a track or treadmill," Health Magazine says. "Just make sure you don't run into anybody."
  • Wall sits: "No seats available? No problem! Sit up against a wall with your legs at a 90 degree angle and hold it for as long as you can," Skyscanner says.
  • Carry your luggage instead of rolling it: "For an extra challenge — and an unexpected core workout — carry your luggage by the handle, making sure to keep your body tall and straight," WebMD recommends.

Plus, some airports — like Baltimore-Washington International Airport and San Francisco International — offer their own gyms and fitness centers if you want a more intense workout. The Points Guy has a full list of airports with gyms.

  • Brooklinen's Labor Day sale is already going on.
  • From August 28 through September 3, save 10% on all orders less than $200 and save 15% on all orders of $200 or more. Sheets, duvet covers, bathrobes, towels, and more are discounted.
  • In our buying guides, we've ranked Brooklinen as the maker of the best luxury sheets, the best sateen sheets, and the best duvet cover on the internet.
  • Check out our master list of the best Labor Day mattress sales if you're looking to upgrade your bed this weekend too. And find all the best Labor Day sales of 2019 here.

Brooklinen is one of our favorite companies to cover. From its bed sheets, to its Brooklittles bedding line for babies and toddlers, to its super-plush bathrobes, to its recently launched shower curtain sets, there's a lot to love about the direct-to-consumer darling.

However, it's not known for holding sales. Prices are usually low enough to warrant what is essentially a year-round sale in itself.

The company typically only has two sales a year: one during Black Friday and Cyber Monday, and the other to celebrate its anniversary in May. This year Brooklinen is running a another sale to celebrate Labor Day: From August 28 through September 3, save 10% on all orders less than $200 and save 15% on all orders of $200 or more.

Save 10% to 15% on your entire order during Brooklinen's Labor Day sale.

If you're looking for a new set of sheets, or you've been waiting for a discount as an excuse to try out luxury bedding, this is one of the best times of the year to invest. The company's bedding looks great, feels even better, and can vastly improve your quality of sleep — which, in turn, improves quite a few other areas of your life. When six hours feels like eight, it's easier to operate in the way that you want in your day-to-day.

You can check out Brooklinen's full product lineup here, but we're fans of the Luxe Hardcore Sheet Bundle for every day. It comes with a duvet cover, a fitted sheet, a flat sheet, and four pillowcases for $249.75 in the queen size. Insider Picks' director of content strategy Ellen Hoffman says the sheet bundle is one of the best purchases she's ever made.

In our buying guides, we've also ranked Brooklinen as the maker of the best luxury sheets and the best sateen sheets you can buy. The company's Down Comforter (full/queen, $349) is the best we tried from a startup, and its Classic Duvet Cover (full/queen, $296) is another best-in-its-category on the internet. It also makes spa-worthy, blanket-sized towels (Bath Sheets, two for $89) and super-plush bathrobes ($98), the latter of which Insider Picks reporter Remi Rosmarin says are the little luxury she never thought she needed.

Insider Picks reporter Mara Leighton can't recommend the Twill Hardcore Sheet Bundle (queen, $189) enough. She says they're made to feel like your favorite worn-in flannel. The twill fabrication allows the yarns to move more freely, creating an overall more forgiving, softer experience. As she's mentioned in her review of them, they'll make you wake up and wish you were working from home every day.

skarmarkand retirement community

  • Throughout the US, there are several luxurious retirement communities that offer modern amenities at a high price tag.
  • In Florida, the Villages — which can cost renters $10,000 per month— and the Sarasota Bay Club — which can cost buyers $300,000 — are examples of lavish retirement homes.
  • Communities like Vivante in California, The Clare in Chicago, and the Sarasota Bay Club in Florida all offer linen service and housekeeping.
  • Some retirement communities are known for their fine-dining restaurants like the Forum at Park Lane in Texas and Vivante's in California.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

While the cost of a retirement community varies state by state, there are some retirement homes in the US that are more luxurious than the usual independent living facility.

These outliers offer retired residents modern amenities, which oftentimes include linen service, housekeeping, valet parking, and 18-hole golf courses. Also, these amenities come with a high price tag — some costing near $1 million.

Keep reading for some of the more luxurious communities you might want to call home in retirement.

Vivante in Costa Mesa, California, has several luxury amenities on-site, including an indoor therapy pool and four restaurants.

Vivante's four restaurants offer residents a buffet, a casual bistro, and a private dining room.

Other amenities include 24-hour on-call nurses, group outings, and housekeeping.

Renting an apartment at Vivante costs between $3,990 to $10,000 per month.

Kimpton Seafire Grand Cayman

  • The IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card is currently offering an elevated sign-up bonus of 125,000 points after you spend $3,000 in the first three months.
  • Even without considering this higher-than-average welcome offer, the card is worth considering. It offers a strong selection of benefits for a reasonable $89 annual fee.
  • You get an annual free night to use at hotels that cost up to 40,000 points, complimentary Platinum IHG status, and a Global Entry application fee credit.
  • Currently, you'll also earn 25x points on IHG purchases for the first 12 months, and 4x points on all other purchases for the first 12 months.

Chase recently increased the sign-up bonus on the IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card, along with adding a temporary boost to the card's earning rate. While the card's benefits have always been generous, the latest improvements are pretty significant.

If you're unfamiliar with the world of hotel credit cards and wondering whether this card is worth getting, you're in the right place. Below is a breakdown of the IHG Rewards Club Premier Card's features and who will benefit the most from having this card.

Read more: The best hotel credit cards

IHG Rewards Club Premier card details

Annual fee: $89

Sign-up bonus: 125,000 points after you spend $3,000 in the first three months

Points earning: 25x points on IHG purchases for the first 12 months (then 10x), 4x points on all other purchases for the first 12 months (then 2x at gas stations, grocery stores, and restaurants, and 1 point per dollar on everything else)

Foreign transaction fee: None

Sign-up bonus

Currently, you can earn 125,000 bonus points after you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.

With this bonus, you can earn a minimum of one free night at a top-tier hotel and upwards of 25 free nights at a PointBreaks property. Any good hotel credit card sign-up bonus should offer a minimum of one free night at a top-tier hotel. The IHG Rewards Club Premier card delivers on that front and offers plenty of options for redeeming those rewards.

Redemption ideas

Whether it's an overwater villa in French Polynesia or a Candlewood Suites in the suburbs, there's a wide range of ways to get maximum value out off IHG points. Free nights range from 10,000 to 70,000 points. IHG also releases a monthly PointBreaks list, consisting of hotels that can be booked for as few as 5,000 points per night.

The 125,000-point sign-up bonus from the IHG Rewards Club Premier card could cover one to 25 free hotel nights. That doesn't even include the fourth night free benefit offered to cardholders.

Below are some examples of some of IHG's best hotels you might want to book with your points:

Category bonuses

The category bonuses on the IHG Rewards Club Premier Card have been significantly improved with the current sign-up offer. In addition to the usual earning rate, cardholders now qualify for bonus points during the 12 months of account opening:

  • 40 points total per dollar at IHG hotels for the first 12 months — that's 25x points at IHG Hotels and Resorts for the first 12 months from account opening as an IHG Rewards Club Premier cardholder, plus 10x points from IHG for being an IHG Rewards Club member and 5x points from IHG with Platinum elite status, which is a benefit of this card. After that, earn 10x points at IHG Hotels and Resorts
  • 4 points per dollar on all other purchases for the first 12 months
  • 4 points on all other purchases for the first 12 months from account opening – after that, 2x points at gas stations, grocery stores, and restaurants, and 1 point per dollar on all other purchases.

The 4 points per dollar on all spending during the first 12 months is pretty incredible. Considering that IHG charges 10,000 to 70,000 points for a free night, that translates to $2,500 to $15,000 worth of credit card spending. Under normal circumstances, you'd have to spend $10,000 to $70,000 to earn the same rewards, assuming you're not making use of the card's bonus categories.

The 4x points on all spending is really ideal for people who want to earn more rewards on their daily spending without thinking about which credit card to utilize at different merchants.

Travel perks

In exchange for its $89 annual fee, the IHG Rewards Club Premier card offers lots of impressive benefits. For starters, cardholders receive a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck fee credit of up to $100 every four years. This is a benefit that is usually included on credit cards with annual fees that are more than $450, like the Platinum Card® from American Express and Citi Prestige.

Cardholders also get a fourth night free on point stays of four or more nights. That translates to a 25% savings on four-night award stays. This can help stretch your sign-up bonus from the IHG Rewards Club Premier card even further.

Cardholders also get automatic IHG Platinum elite status. That's the second-highest tier within the IHG Rewards Club program and normally requires completing 40 nights. IHG Platinum members are eligible for room upgrades, 50% bonus earnings on paid bookings, two free Amazon Kindle ebooks per quarter, and a $30 in-room spa and Raid the Bar credits at participating hotels.

To keep cardholders loyal, the IHG Rewards Club Premier card issues a free night each year after your card anniversary. This free night can be used at any IHG hotel worldwide that costs up to 40,000 points per night, making it a terrific value in exchange for the $89 annual fee.

Finally, you can earn 10,000 bonus points after you spend $20,000 on purchases and make one additional purchase at least one day after you spend $20,000 each account anniversary year.

Who should get this card?

Whether or not you're loyal to IHG, the IHG Rewards Club Premier card offers tremendous value. It doesn't take much to get your money's worth out of the card. Aside from the generous sign-up bonus and 4x points on all non-IHG spending during the first 12 months, the recurring benefits make this card a keeper.

The annual free night alone is worth the $89 annual fee, and the fourth night free on award stays can help your points stretch further. Having IHG Platinum status is a nice bonus that can translate to valuable benefits and point earnings on paid stays.

The Hamptons: An intro

The Hamptons are located on the South Fork of Long Island and are about two hours away from Midtown, Manhattan by car — if there's no traffic, which there usually is. The area is made up of two proper towns: Southampton and East Hampton.

The map above features Business Insider's top picks of the hottest summer spots in the Hamptons: Westhampton Beach, Quogue, Southampton, Sagaponack, Sag Harbor, East Hampton, Amagansett, and Montauk.

The Hamptons welcome millions of visitors each year and are known around the world for attracting ultra-wealthy vacationers.

For a good meal, head over to the Hamptons' Sag Harbor.

Whether you're looking to dine while dressed to the nines or kick back after a day at the beach, according to Saatchi, Sag Harbor has it all.

"There are more restaurants choices in this small town/village than in all the others," Saatchi told Business Insider. "Options range from very posh to seriously casual."

Sag Harbor is a bayfront village that's around just four miles from the ocean. It's located in between both East Hampton and Southampton.

Two of Saatchi's top picks for dining out are Estia's Little Kitchen, a Latin American restaurant, and Le Bilboquet, a French restaurant. Estia's is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Enjoy your drink of choice in Montauk.

Montauk is a village located on the eastern edge of Long Island. It's about 120 miles away from New York City by car and includes over 5,000 acres of parks and beaches.

And, if you're looking to spend your time in an area with exciting nightlife, Montauk is the place to be, according to Saatchi.

Along with being a good place to party in general, Montauk is also home to the "hottest clubs for singles," Saatchi told Business Insider. The Crow's Nest is a popular place to grab a sunset drink or a sitdown meal.

You've got a good chance of bumping into your celebrity crush in East Hampton Village.

The Hamptons are often visited by celebrities including Brooke Shields, Anderson Cooper, and Neil Patrick Harris.

The best chance you have of running into a Hollywood A-lister is in East Hampton Village, according to Saatchi.

In fact, Saatchi told Business Insider that the best places to test your luck include Babette's, a local restaurant, during brunch or lunchtime, or Nick and Toni's, another local restaurant, during dinner time.

East Hampton Village is located on the southern shore of Long Island.

If you want to buy a house but aren't looking to shell out millions, look no further than Springs in East Hampton.

Springs is a hamlet in East Hampton.

According to Saatchi, it is "home to many artists, has beautiful beaches, waterfront restaurants, country markets, recreational facilities, and an excellent K-8 school."

Saatchi told Business Insider that many of the homes in this hamlet sell for under $1 million.

This 4-bedroom, 4-bathroom home on Spruce Street spans 2,100 square feet and is on the market for $1.095 million. The home boasts a wraparound cedar deck and a heated pool.

Now, if you just want to look at some gorgeous real estate, head south of Route 27A in Southampton.

For all luxury home enthusiasts, south of Route 27A in Southampton is the best place to see the biggest and most beautiful homes in the Hamptons, according to Saatchi.

The area is surrounded by generations of wealth.

"Many of the original 'cottages' remain in the same families. The area has an old-world feel that was not changed by the newer summer residents," Saatchi told Business Insider.

This 6-bedroom, 6-bathroom home on Aqua Drive in Southampton is currently listed for $6.995 million and features over 6,000 square feet of interior space.

If you're eager to visit the Hamptons but want to minimize the dent the trip puts in your wallet, Montauk is your safest bet.

Located at the very tip of Long Island, Montauk takes the cake as the most popular spot for millennials in the Hamptons.

"Montauk has four draws for millennials: great surfing, lots of reasonably priced dining and lodging options, and the best nightlife," Saatchi told Business Insider.

Want to avoid the crowds? Head to Wainscott in East Hampton.

While Wainscott is not well known, it is home to a beautiful beach with only seven oceanfront homes, Saatchi told Business Insider.

It is also home to Georgica Association, a private enclave. According to Mansion Global, Georgica Association is made up of three streets and around just 35 homes. Those who stay there are of ultra-wealthy status.

For the top brands, there's no better place to go than Southampton Village.

If you're looking for the best place to shop in the Hamptons, Saatchi suggests you make your way to Southampton Village.

"Southampton Village has the largest "central business district" [in the Hamptons], and as such, the most shops," Saatchi told Business Insider.

While there are many unique one-off clothing shops, Saatchi explained, Southampton Village also boasts national brands like Ralph Lauren, Theory, and J. Crew.
