12 things science says predict divorce

divorce couple

No one can say with 100% certainty that a couple is heading for disaster.

However, social scientists have gotten pretty good at predicting who's most likely to wind up there. These couples share certain commonalities — in the way they fight and the way they describe their relationship, but also in their education level and employment status.

Below, we've rounded up 12 factors that predict divorce.

SEE ALSO: 13 facts about divorce every couple should know before getting married

Getting married in your teens or after age 32

The best time to get married is when you feel ready, and when you've found someone you think you can spend a lifetime with. Don't force anything — or put it off — because a study told you to do so.

That said, research does suggest that couples who marry in their teens and couples who marry in their mid-30s or later are at greater risk for divorce than couples in their late 20s and early 30s. The risk is especially high for teenage couples.

That's according to research led by Nicholas Wolfinger, a professor at the University of Utah. After age 32, Wolfinger found, your odds of divorce increase by about 5% every year.

As Wolfinger wrote in a blog post for the conservative-leaning Institute for Family Studies, "For almost everyone, the late twenties seems to be the best time to tie the knot."

Other research, published in 2015 in the journal Economic Inquiry, found that the odds of divorce among heterosexual couples increase with the age gap between spouses.

As Megan Garber reported at The Atlantic:

"A one-year discrepancy in a couple's ages, the study found, makes them 3% more likely to divorce (when compared to their same-aged counterparts); a 5-year difference, however, makes them 18% more likely to split up. And a 10-year difference makes them 39% more likely."

Having a husband who doesn't work full-time

A 2016 Harvard study, published in the American Sociological Review, suggests that it's not a couple's finances that affect their chances of divorce, but rather the division of labor.

When the researcher, Alexandra Killewald, looked at heterosexual marriages that began after 1975, she learned that couples in which the husband didn't have a full-time job had a 3.3% chance of divorcing the following year, compared to 2.5% among couples in which the husband did have a full-time job.

Wives' employment status, however, didn't much affect the couple's chances of divorce.

The researcher concludes that the male breadwinner stereotype is still very much alive, and can affect marital stability.

Not finishing high school

It doesn't seem fair that couples who spend more time in school are less likely to get divorced. But that's what the research suggests.

A post on the Bureau of Labor Statistics website highlights a result from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (1979), which looked at the marriage and divorce patterns of a group of young baby boomers. The post reads:

"The chance of a marriage ending in divorce was lower for people with more education, with over half of marriages of those who did not complete high school having ended in divorce compared with approximately 30 percent of marriages of college graduates."

It may have to do with the fact that lower educational attainment predicts lower income — which in turn predicts a more stressful life. As psychologist Eli Finkel previously told Business Insider:

"What I think is going on is it's really difficult to have a productive, happy marriage when your life circumstances are so stressful and when your day-to-day life involves, say three or four bus routes in order to get to your job."

Showing contempt for your partner

John Gottman, a psychologist at the University of Washington and the founder of the Gottman Institute, calls certain relationship behaviors the "four horsemen of the apocalypse." That's because they predict divorce with scary-high accuracy.

The first behavior is contempt or seeing your partner as beneath you. Gottman calls this behavior the "kiss of death" for a relationship. Criticism can also lead to the downfall of a marriage. Turning a behavior into a statement about your partner's character can lead to increased instability. Defensiveness or playing the victim during difficult situations can also cause problems. Lastly, stonewalling or blocking off conversation between you and your partner is a recipe for disaster.

As Business Insider's Erin Brodwin reported, these conclusions are based on a 14-year study of 79 couples living across the US Midwest, which Gottman conducted along with University of California-Berkeley psychologist Robert Levenson. And while that particular study was small, another decade of research supports the findings.

Being overly affectionate as newlyweds

If you're not inclined to hug and kiss and hold hands as newlyweds, that might be a problem. But if you practically have to be pulled apart, well, that might be a problem, too.

Psychologist Ted Huston followed 168 couples for 13 years — from their wedding day onward. Huston and his team conducted multiple interviews with the couples throughout the study.

Here's one fascinating finding, from the resulting paper that was published in the journal Interpersonal Relations and Group Processes in 2001: "As newlyweds, the couples who divorced after 7 or more years were almost giddily affectionate, displaying about one third more affection than did spouses who were later happily married."

Aviva Patz summed it up in Psychology Today: "[C]ouples whose marriages begin in romantic bliss are particularly divorce-prone because such intensity is too hard to maintain. Believe it or not, marriages that start out with less 'Hollywood romance' usually have more promising futures."

Weathering daily stress

Don't underestimate the toll that stress can take on a marriage.

A 2007 paper, published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, looked at the factors that led to divorce in European couples and found that daily stress was an important reason behind the decision to divorce in many couples.

Seemingly trivial experiences like forgetting an appointment or missing the bus turned out to create tension between spouses.

The authors even found that "participants reported the accumulation of everyday stress as a more relevant divorce trigger than falling in love with another person, partner violence, or even a specific major life event that would have instigated changes in their private life."

Withdrawing during conflict

When your partner tries to talk to you about something tough, do you shut down? If so (or if your partner is guilty of that behavior), that's not a great sign.

A 2013 study, published in the Journal of Marriage and Family, found that husbands' "withdrawal" behaviors predicted higher divorce rates. This conclusion was based on the researchers' interviews with about 350 newlywed couples living in Michigan.

Meanwhile, a 2014 study, published in the journal Communication Monographs, suggests that couples engaged in "demand/withdraw" patterns — i.e. one partner pressuring the other and receiving silence in return — are less happy in their relationships.

The lead study author, Paul Schrodt at Texas Christian University, says it's a hard pattern to break because each partner thinks the other is the cause of the problem. It requires seeing how your individual behaviors are contributing to the issue and using different, more respectful conflict-management strategies.

Describing your relationship in a negative way

In 1992, Gottman and other researchers at the University of Washington developed a procedure called the "oral history interview," in which they ask couples to talk about different aspects of their relationship. By analyzing the conversations, the researchers are able to predict which couples are heading for divorce.

In one study, published in 2000 in the Journal of Family Psychology, Gottman and colleagues put 95 newlywed couples through the oral history interview. Results showed that couples' scores on certain measures predicted the strength or weakness of their marriage. Those measures included: fondness for each other, "we"-ness or how much each spouse emphasizes unification in the marriage, expansiveness or how much each partner elaborates on what the other is saying, negativity, disappointment in the marriage, and how much the couple describes their marriage as chaotic.

Having divorced parents

Research shows that if your parents divorced, you may be at more at risk of getting divorced also. The statistics vary on this theory, but one study by researchers Paul Amato and Danelle Deboer found that if a woman's parents divorced, her odds of getting divorced increased by 69%. The study also found that if a husband and wife's parents both divorced, the risk of divorce increased by a whopping 189%.

This isn't to say that if you or your spouse's parents' marriage ended, your relationship is also doomed. It is important for children of divorce to separate themselves and their own relationships from that of their parents, and commit themselves to having healthier, more harmonious relationships and reactions to potential conflicts.

Working as a gaming manager, bartender, or flight attendant

Certain professions report higher rates of divorce. According to a previous article by Business Insider, the jobs with the highest divorce rates are gaming managers, bartenders, and flight attendants. Jobs with the lowest chances of divorce included actuaries, physical scientists, and medical and life scientists.

How much money you make

Money is a common stressor among most married couples. In fact, money has often been cited as a large contributing factor to why couples decided to get divorced. A 2012 study in Family Relations Journal found that "money is the top predictor of divorce for both men and women." However, while many may think not having enough money would lead to divorce, studies show that couples with higher incomes were actually more likely to split up.

CNBC cites a couple of reasons for this, including the fact that in many high-income relationships, one partner is the bread-winner and the other doesn't work at all. High-income earners may also travel a lot for work or spend long days in the office, rather than at home.

Whether you have children or not

According to a study by Anneli Rufus, an author and journalist, that appeared on Smart Marriages, whether or not a couple has children can greatly impact their chances of divorce. In 2010, at least 66% of divorced couples in the United States reported being childless, versus 40% who have children.

The absence of children can also cause strain if one spouse wants to have kids and the other does not. According to the report, couples who do not agree on wanting children are twice as likely to get a divorce.

We tested this startup's ultra-lightweight dress shirts during the NYC heatwave — they kept us cool and dry

  • Ministry of Supply is known for using high-tech materials that improve the comfort and performance of work clothes without giving up any style points.
  • In the past, we've been impressed with the company's breathable, wrinkle-free, and moisture-wicking styles.
  • To see if their new button-ups measure up to the older versions (some of which are getting phased out), we wore the Aero Short Sleeve ($95) and women's Juno Tailored Dress Shirt ($95) in NYC's heatwave.

Ministry of Supply has built its reputation making work-appropriate technical clothing that doesn't come at the expense of style.

When you mention the company's name, you're most likely to hear something about how the startup's co-founder wore one of its suit while running a marathon, or maybe how it combined the brainpower of MIT scientists and NASA to help design the most comfortable dress shirt possible.

The company thinks of itself — and wants shoppers to think of it — as the everyman's version of James Bond's savvy, impossibly suave product guy, "Q".

Insider Picks has tested its fair share of Ministry of Supply gear in the past — its Apollo Shirt (the one NASA had a hand in creating), which is now in its third iteration, first impressed us in 2017. Despite its $115 price tag, the Apollo made a compelling case for itself: wrinkle-free, machine-washable, and made from a material reportedly 19 times more breathable than cotton. Later, when the company expanded its women's line, its $85 Easier Than Silk Shirt became my favorite option on the market.

Two years later, we tested out Ministry of Supply's newest button-ups in New York City's heatwave to see how they stacked up.

Men's Aero Short Sleeve, $95

Capture0341 19228_2000x

At first glance, Ministry of Supply's apparel might seem overpriced, but each time I've tried something, I'm reminded why the brand is well worth the cost. The Aero Short Sleeve ($95) was no exception. Just like the long sleeve version, the Aero short sleeve shirt is moisture-wicking, machine washable, and flexible for a full range of motion.

I wore the shirt in NYC's recent heatwave and while there's no single way to comfortably survive nearly 100-degree temperatures except for staying inside with air conditioning, it surely made being outside a lot more bearable than if I had been wearing a normal cotton shirt. Although I did sweat in the shirt, it quickly absorbed the moisture and dried right up — something that couldn't be said about a basic cotton tee, which would probably still be soaking wet a week later considering the humidity in this city.

If you need a professional, but warm weather-friendly shirt to wear this summer, the Ministry of Supply Aero Short Sleeve is a solid option. — Amir Ismael, reporter

Women's Juno Tailored Dress Shirt, $95

Capture0022 17501 Edit_2000x

Ministry of Supply already made my favorite dress shirt with the Easier Than Silk Shirt style that it now appear to be phasing out, but this new version falls in line perfectly with everything I've learned to love about the company's clothes: high performance and stylish execution. This one is just a little more fitted and shorter, so it tucks into suits better.

The Juno drapes like a sleek, figure-flattering heavy silk, but feels light and breathable to the touch — like a technical fabric that's a little more dressy. The 10% spandex in the synthetic blend keeps it stretchy enough for cartwheels, and the polyester wicks away moisture. So, at the end of my 20-minute power-walk to and from my subway station, I don't arrive at my destination with sweat stains.

It's tough to wrinkle (unless you crumple it up and leave it under a pile of other clothes), and low-maintenance (you can throw it in the machine to be washed). My only complaint is that the buttons can sometimes gap a bit around the bust (for reference, I wear a size small and have a 32DD bra size), but it's a small sacrifice. Definitely not enough to undercut its other benefits. — Mara Leighton, reporter

Bottom line

Overall, the new Ministry of Supply gear has kept everything we learned to love about its predecessors: low-maintenance care, superior breathability and stretch, and great fits. The $95 price can be hard to justify, but if you're comfortable spending it on a dress shirt you actually like wearing, we recommend stopping here first.

'How long can Instagram videos be?': A breakdown of the length requirements for every type of Instagram video

  • If you've shot a great video that you want to post on Instagram, you should be aware of how long Instagram videos can be in their various forms.
  • Instagram videos in a regular post can only be 60 seconds long, but you can upload and trim videos that are longer than that.
  • Videos posted in your Instagram Stories can only be 15 seconds in length.
  • Instagram livestream videos can be up to 60 minutes long.
  • User videos posted to IGTV have to be between 15 seconds and 10 minutes long. Verified accounts and accounts with a large following can post up to 60 minutes of video on IGTV, however.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

If you have an Instagram account, chances are you've been using the social media platform to post cute selfies, vacation snaps, and adorable photos of your dog or cat.

However, Instagram isn't just for static images — the service also allows you to upload video, allowing users to share even more of their lives with their followers.

If you've never posted videos on Instagram before, or you're simply curious as to what the limitations of the feature are, you might be curious to know how long the videos you upload are allowed to be.

The answer is less than straightforward. Basically, it varies depending on where you upload your videos on Instagram's platform. Here's what you need to know.

How long can Instagram videos be

Instagram videos in a regular post

If you want to upload a video onto your Instagram account's feed, i.e. have it show up like a normal photo on your Instagram profile, you should choose a video to upload (or record one) that is less than 60 seconds long

You can upload a video that is longer than 60 seconds long, but as videos in your Instagram feed can only be a minute long, you'll need to select which 60 second portion of the video you would like to post.

Instagram videos in Stories

Instagram Stories are a great way to share smaller parts of your day with your followers, without having them posted on your actual feed. Stories expire after 24 hours, making this feature great for videos that are less important than the ones you want to be displayed permanently.

Videos on Instagram stories canonly be 15 seconds long. However, there's an easy workaround to this limitation: videos longer than 15 seconds will automatically be split up into separate segments, and all can be uploaded at once.

IMG_7847.PNG

Instagram livestream videos

Instagram users can livestream video for up to 60 minutes at a time. All livestreams are saved as videos that can be viewed by your followers later, though you can choose to disable the rewatch feature if you choose.

You can immediately go live again after your 60-minute time limit is up, however, thereby beginning another 60 minute stretch of video broadcasting and recording.

Instagram IGTV

Videos on IGTV

At the moment, videos on IGTV, the app's forum for long-form video, have to between 15 seconds and 10 minutes in length for most users. Verified accounts and accounts with a large follower count can post IGTV videos that are up to 60 minutes in length.

Disappointing photos show what Las Vegas looks like in real life, from crowded venues and packed pools to long lines

las vegas strip

  • Almost 39 million people visited Las Vegas last year.
  • As a result of so many annual guests, the county's gaming revenue often reaches close to $10 billion.
  • High visitor traffic also leads to daily crowds at many of the iconic Las Vegas venues and sites.
  • In addition to crowds, visitors should be prepared for an extreme climate and extensive wait times.

Popular for bachelor and bachelorette parties, shotgun weddings, and other weekend getaways, Las Vegas is a staple in American tourism.

While some travelers visit with a budget, others — purposely or accidentally — can end up spending thousands of dollars in the infamous "Sin City."

These travelers come from across the country (and around the world), and many may be surprised to find the city — like so many others — is much less glamorous in the daytime.

Read more:Traveling the world for a year showed me real life doesn't always live up to the hype. These are the most disappointing places I've been.

Crowded streets and hotel lobbies make venturing outside city limits to national parks worth it — if you don't mind the drive.

But despite its flaws, Las Vegas promises cheap flights and endless entertainment for the steady stream of visitors each and every weekend. Additionally, Business Insider's Pat Evans previously reported that "while the city's famous Strip does feed into stereotypes of the city" there is a vibrant community beyond the most touristy areas.

It is also well known for its many luxurious hotels ...

But if you were expecting to waltz right into any of Vegas' iconic hotels, bars, or restaurants, brace yourself.

From extensive check-in lines at the city's many hotels ...

In fact, you'll probably have a whole crowd of people watching you as you pose for that perfect photo.

The same can be said of most of Vegas' iconic sites, which are photogenic when empty and when photographed at night.

Consider Vegas' Statue of Liberty. From the right angle, it's definitely imposing ...

... but another shot reveals that it's actually right next to a major highway.

In some photos, Vegas' answer to Piazza San Marco looks pretty awe-inspiring.

Vegas is, of course, in the middle of the desert — and that means some seriously scorching temperatures.

According to the National Weather Service, the city has recorded temperatures of up to 117 degrees.

Unfortunately, one of the best times to visit Las Vegas to beat the crowds is in the summer months, when the city is at its hottest.

On the flip side, while highly unusual, Vegas has also been known to experience snowstorms, which has the potential to derail your vacation plans.

These sometimes unbearable conditions make the Southwest home to beautiful deserts and national sites.

This includes the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area ...

... and the incredible Zion National Park.

... meaning you may need to rent a car to get there.

Rental cars can be expensive, just like everything else, including food at "tourist trap" restaurants. Dinner at the popular celebrity restaurants can be especially expensive.

Otherwise, plan on eating at your hotel buffet, which usually has a wait line (just like everything else), and can still come at an extra cost on top of your stay.

Given Vegas' reputation as a party city, there's a good chance people will be drinking at just about any time of day, which can lead to loud environments with rowdy groups.

Just like photo-op locations, resort pools can be highly crowded.

While some lucky visitors may get to experience a leisurely pool day with plenty of space to swim ...

... most can expect to be sharing that coveted pool space ...

... with many, many strangers.

And the same goes for clubs, which can get packed. For some visitors, being part of the crowd is part of the coveted experience ...

... but to an unprepared visitor, it could easily be overwhelming. In addition, some may come with unexpected cover charges.

And, of course, it's hard to talk about Las Vegas without mentioning gambling.

According to a study by Forbes, depending on the game, the casino's "house edge" makes your odds of winning big fairly slim. If you do decide to play for hours, consider blackjack, where the odds are at least close to 50-50.

Source: Forbes

Though modern designs have changed, casinos are notorious for not having clocks, making gambling a disorientating experience for most visitors.

Finally, if you choose to visit Vegas for a holiday, get ready. Venues are even more crowded during prime vacation dates, such as New Year's Eve.

That being said, if you are looking for a lively weekend and are willing to brave the crowds, then Las Vegas may be the right place for you after all.

How to make a FaceTime call on your iPad

FaceTime iPhone iPad

The FaceTime app that comes preloaded on every recent iPhone and iPad is one of the greatest tools we have for staying connected to one another. While in decades past, the real time video call was the thing of science fiction, today it is such a commonplace option most of us take video calling for granted.

That is, right up until it's time to start a FaceTime session on a new iPad, and we realize we actually don't know how to use it.

Don't worry, using FaceTime on iPads is as easy as a few taps. The FaceTime app should be preloaded on your iPad, but if you can't find it, just download FaceTime onto your iPad from the App Store.

After that, it couldn't be much easier to use FaceTime on an iPad.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

iPad (From $329 at Apple)

How to make a FaceTime video or audio call on iPad

1. Tap the FaceTime app to launch it.

IMG_0091.PNG

2. Tap the blue "+" icon at the top of the screen.

3. Type in the name (if you're FaceTiming a contact), email address, or phone number of the person you wish to reach.

4. Tap the "Audio" or "Video" button to send the call.

Assuming the person on the receiving end accepts, you will then be connected, either in a live video chat wherein you can see through their iPad or iPhone's screen-side camera and they yours, or an audio call where you can speak but neither party can see one another.

And if you wish to start a group conversation, simply hit the blue "+" before placing the call and enter another contact, email, or number. You can have up to 32 people on a group FaceTime session, though your screen will be pretty cluttered if you actually go with that many people.

When passengers don't have bags.

"I notice if people don't have bags with them, and sometimes that strikes me as odd," a flight attendant for United Airlines said.

Passengers who are in a bad mood.

"If people are having a bad day, I definitely notice that," the United flight attendant said. "You can tell by the person's body language or facial expressions or if they've been crying. I know that air travel is really hard for people."

What the "ding" sounds mean.

"There's a lot of 'dings' that go on on the plane that mean specific things to the flight crew, but passengers don't know what any of them are," a flight attendant for Delta Air Lines said.

There are "dings" for phone calls, when the plane has reached an altitude of 10,000 feet, and when the seatbelt sign is turned on or off, among other events, she said.

Which passengers need the most help.

"I'm noticing the passenger that's a single mom with their kid that might just need a little bit more help or a just a little bit more patience," a flight attendant for Delta said. "I'm noticing the passenger that's clenching onto their armrest really hard that's really freaked out about flying and probably needs somebody to talk to."

The location of the nearest exit.

"I know where my closest exit is," said Lauren Redling, a flight attendant for the private-jet charter company Worldwide Jet.

Which passengers are the most anxious.

"I can tell an anxious flyer from a mile away," said Kevin Cain, a flight attendant for PSA Airlines. "A free glass of wine can just calm their nerves and change their day around."

When passengers try to keep their bags in their laps instead of stowing them under the seat in front of them

"I always notice if they're trying to hold their bag in their lap — always," said a flight attendant for Envoy Air. "They can try to hide it from me. I always notice."

Where the bathroom is located.

"I, for one, always know where the lavatory is, whereas the average passenger doesn't," the Envoy Air flight attendant said.

Which parts of the plane are dirty.

"Passengers seem to not think that anything is dirty on a plane, which is just funny," said Sally Ann MacLagan a flight attendant for Mesa Airlines.

What passengers are wearing.

"I have concerns if they're wearing a winter coat and it's summer," MacLagan said.

twitter on phone

One of the perks of having a private Twitter account is that you have the ability to control who follows you, since you can approve or reject follower requests.

But if you want to remove existing followers on Twitter, there is another option, regardless of whether you have a private or public account: Blocking users.

You can easily remove someone from your followers list by blocking them on Twitter, using the mobile app on an iPhone or Android phone, or Twitter's desktop version.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

How to remove followers on Twitter by blocking them

Whether you have a public or private Twitter account, you can make it so that other users can't follow you by blocking them.

They won't get a notification about the block, but they will be able to tell if they try to visit your profile.

Here's how to block users you don't want viewing your tweets.

How to block Twitter users on a desktop computer

1. Go to twitter.com and log into your account, if necessary.

2. Navigate to your profile by clicking your name, located on the top-left side of the screen.

3. Toggle over to the followers tab.

1 REMOVE FOLLOWERS TWITTER

4. Locate the user you want to block and click the three dots located in the right corner of their profile box and select "Block [username]."

5. When prompted, confirm this action by clicking the red "Block" button in the pop-up window — you won't be able to see their feed and there will now be a button that says "Blocked" in the upper-right corner of their profile.

2 REMOVE FOLLOWERS TWITTER

How to block Twitter users on a mobile device

1. Open your Twitter app, login if necessary, and navigate to your profile (the steps to get there will differ slightly depending on the type of phone you have; for example, you may need to tap the profile icon on the bottom toolbar, or you may need to tap your profile picture in the top-left side of the screen and then tap "Profile").

3 REMOVE FOLLOWERS TWITTER

2. Tap your follower count to see your followers.

3. Locate the user you want to block and tap on their profile.

4. Tap the three dots located in the top-right corner of the screen and select "Block."

4 REMOVE FOLLOWERS TWITTER

How to remove followers on Twitter without blocking them permanently

There's one final option if you want to remove followers, but not block them permanently.

When you block someone on Twitter, you also won't be able to see their profile. However, if you block and then unblock someone, you will remove this follower without giving up access to their profile (unless they are on private, in which case, you would have to request to follow them again).

For more information on how to unblock someone on Twitter, read our article, "How to block or unblock someone on Twitter on a computer or mobile device."

  • Amazon is looking to expand into New York City, and is looking at a WeWork-owned space that fits "several thousand employees," the Wall Street Journal reports.
  • News of Amazon's possible expansion comes five months after the e-commerce giant's plans fell apart to build headquarters in New York.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Amazon is looking to expand in New York City, just months after its controversial deal to build a second headquarters in the city fell through, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Amazon has been in talks with the coworking space WeWork to lease a 12-story building it owns in midtown Manhattan. The building, which could fit "several thousand employees," was once home to retailer Lord & Taylor's flagship department store.

Amazon's plans to build new headquarters in New York fell apart in February. The e-commerce giant canceled its plans to bring its HQ2 campus to New York's Queens borough following heavy criticism from local politicians, residents, and labor union representatives, who took issue with the terms of the deal in bringing Amazon to the city.

Although the proposed HQ2 campus would have brought 25,000 jobs to New York, Amazon would have received $3 million in tax breaks as part of the deal. Meanwhile, Amazon's HQ2 plans are still moving forward with a location in northern Virginia.

As of now, an estimated 5,000 Amazon employees are based in New York across numerous office buildings, including a fulfillment center in Staten Island.

WSJ reported Thursday that Amazon has been considering "multiple locations" through Manhattan. Some of the locations Amazon is rumored to be considering include two new buildings near Penn Station and Industry City in Brooklyn.

The We Company, WeWork's parent company, declined to comment. Amazon did not immediately responded to Business Insider's request for comment.

  • The rise of video games and computer software led to the founding of a number of specialty brick-and-mortar retailers in the late 20th century.
  • But selling new tech proved to be a business fraught with peril for retailers.
  • Here are a few defunct retailers that ultimately face-planted in their efforts to sell software and video games.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Retail isn't always about collecting golden coins and gobbling up power pellets. Sometimes, you've got to accept that it's "game over" for your company.

It's no different for video game and computer software retailers.

Stores dedicated entirely to selling video games and computer software might be relatively new, compared with, say, department stores or grocers. But they've still got to contend with tough competition, evolving technology, and fickle consumer preferences like other retailers.

Here's a look at a few video game stores that glitched out for good:

Amazon requires police departments to advertise Ring home security products to residents in return for free Ring cameras (AMZN)

new york police department nypd

  • A secret agreement between Amazon's Ring smart home security company and a Florida police department requires officers to advertise Ring products in return for free Ring doorbell cameras, which can be handed out to local residents for free.
  • It was previously reported that some police departments would only hand out free Ring cameras to residents if they allowed police to informally request surveillance footage, which usually requires a formal warrant.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Ring, the smart home security company that Amazon acquired last year, is requiring US police departments across the country to advertise the Ring platform in return for free Ring smart home security cameras, according to a report in Motherboard on Thursday.

Motherboard said it obtained a signed memorandum of understanding as well as emails between Ring and the Lakeland, Florida police department revealing the terms of these secret agreements.

Ring gave the Lakeland police department 15 of its home security cameras for free (it's not clear which Ring cameras, but Amazon's website lists the cost of Ring cameras between $99 and $249), as well as access to a special online portal Ring created for law enforcement, according to the documents.

The portal is essentially a map of all the Ring cameras in a neighborhood. Specific home addresses are obscured, but the site allows police to reach out to homeowners with Rings to request access to their footage, an arrangement that Motherboard says allows police to sidestep the usual warrants required for obtaining security footage.

In exchange for these freebies and privileges, the Lakeland Police Department is contractually obligated to "encourage" residents to download the Ring app. For every download, the police department gets a $10 credit that can be used towards the purchase of more Ring cameras.

CNET's Alfred Ng has previously reported that police departments around the US had a partnerships with Ring hat involved police offering free Ring cameras to local residents. But the terms of the contracts, and the fact that police are explicitly required to act as advertisers for Ring under the arrangements, weren't known.

Many police departments appear to have have partnerships with Ring, potentially with similar contractual terms.

The Tulsa, Oklahoma police department tweeted about its partnership with Ring on Monday, providing a special code and a link for people to download the app.

The concern with the partnership detailed in the previous CNET report was that some police departments were requiring recipients of free Ring cameras to give police access to recorded footage, giving police departments unprecedented surveillance capabilities without going through typical law enforcement due process to obtain warrants for surveillance footage, and posing serious concerns over privacy.

Now, the implication that Ring is incentivizing police departments to advertise its services raise new concerns.

Representatives from Ring and the Lakeland Police Department did not immediately return requests for comment.

Aman Resorts is a chain of global luxury resorts beloved by celebrities and ultra-wealthy. Amangani, their location in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, is one of just two Aman hotels in the US.

Getting married at Amangani costs well over $100,000.

I recently visited Jackson Hole, which has become a ritzy resort town, and got an exclusive tour of Amangani. I found that the hotel delivers on two of wealthy travelers' top preferences: experience and privacy.

Here's what it looks like.

Amangani is a five-star luxury hotel and resort in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

It's one of two US locations of Aman Resorts, a chain of global luxury resorts beloved by celebrities and the ultra-wealthy.

On a recent trip to Jackson Hole, I drove up to Amangani for an exclusive tour with the hotel's general manager, Stuart Lang.

The hotel is tucked away in the mountains on a private road, about a 15-minute drive from the center of town.

Parking is valet only.

Amangani offers a private driver and car service to guests at an additional charge, but many guests opt for taking Ubers and Lyfts, according to Lang.

The hotel's hilltop location offers panoramic views of Jackson Hole and the Teton mountain range.

The name Amangani means "peaceful home" in a mashup of Sanskrit and Shoshone, Lang told me, and the scenic, secluded location certainly seemed to fit that bill.

Almost 90% of Amangani's guests come from around the US, Lang told me.

They come from both coasts, mostly New York and California, as well as Chicago, Dallas, and Atlanta. Amangani has deals with certain airlines to keep direct flights from major hubs to Jackson.

International guests usually come from the United Kingdom or China, Lang said.

Amangani doesn't have a traditional check-in desk like most hotels.

Instead, guests are led immediately to their suites and the check-in process happens there.

Lang told me this is because they don't want Amangani to feel like a regular hotel.

The main lounge's high ceilings and expansive windows let in sunlight and views of the surrounding mountains.

The hotel's design is rustic and relatively minimal in order to keep the focus on the natural beauty of its setting, Lang told me.

The lounge features live music on the weekends and roaring fires in the winter. Unlike some other Aman hotels, Amangani's lounge is open to outside guests, which results in many locals coming in for a drink and for the music, Lang said.

Sustainable meats, fresh fish, and seasonal farm-to-table produce are served are served in the 68-seat dining room.

In the wintertime, Amangani can be bought out for weddings at a price of "well over $100,000" for a couple of days, Lang said.

The hotel also hosts corporate retreats for hedge funds, oil and gas companies, and auto companies. In October 2018, Lang said, Rolls Royce bought out the entire hotel for three weeks for the launch of its first SUV.

Outside the main lounge is a spacious terrace.

The space is filled with a smattering of fire pits, and tables and chairs with umbrellas.

Amangani's standout feature is its heated, 377-square-foot outdoor infinity pool.

The pool's lounge chairs are positioned for optimal views of the mountains.

Aman Resorts are known for their wellness programs, and Amangani is no exception.

The spa area includes four treatment rooms, two exercise studios, and his-and-her steam rooms.

The hotel's redwood-lined exercise studio is open 24 hours a day.

It comes with weightlifting and cardio equipment, including a Peloton bike.

In the bathrooms, guests can find a steam room, showers, and lockers.

Spa treatments range from deep tissue massages to Himalayan salt scrubs.

Amangani has its own gift shop selling sumptuous vegan leather bags, apparel, jewelry, and artwork.

Products for sale in the shop include a $95 faux ostrich bag and a $3,700 bison painting.

Amangani's accommodations comprise 40 suites, 29 of which are superior suites. The other 11 suites include end units and units with more spacious rooms, better views, or additional half-bathrooms.

Rates can fluctuate depending on season and availability, but a night in a superior suite (pictured above) costs an average of $975. The other suites range from $1,100 to $2,100 a night on average.

The guest rooms are designed with natural materials like wood and stone, as well as sumptuous textures like faux fur.

The bathroom comes with a deep soaking tub, a separate shower ...

... and a dressing room.

Each suite at Amangani comes with a private patio or balcony.

The room also has its own fireplace.

In addition to its 40 suites, Amangani owns 19 nearby homes, some of which can be rented out for between $6,500 and $9,500 a night.

Some of the homes are inhabited for most or all of the year, Lang told me. Others are second homes that aren't in the rental program, but Amangani maintains them.

Rapper Kanye West reportedly stayed in one of these homes in 2018, according to The New York Times.

Amangani partners with local businesses to give guests access to a plethora of outdoor activities.

Winter activities include skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and riding in horse-drawn carriages.

In the summertime, Amangani can organize excursions for guests to go hiking and mountain biking, ride horses, take scenic helicopter and plane rides, and float over the Tetons in hot air balloons.

Amangani also has in-house naturalists who lead private tours of the nearby Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks.

Amangani is closed in April and November, but the winter holidays are among the busiest times for the resort, according to Lang.

In the winter months, guests can take free Amangani shuttles to the world-class skiing at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, about a 20-minute drive away.

Amangani offers a private ski lounge at the ski resort with a ski concierge, equipment storage, and snacks and beverages.

After my tour of Amangani, it was clear that the luxury resort delivers on two major preferences of affluent travelers today: experience and privacy.

As Business Insider's Lina Batarags previously reported, wealthy travelers are increasingly interested in unique, tailored experiences, as well as wellness amenities, which dovetails perfectly with Amangani's numerous adventure offerings and spa treatments.

And Amangani's secluded location on a private mountain road in the least populated state in America certainly gives well-off travelers the privacy they crave.

These sandals have been a mainstay among outdoor adventurers for nearly 30 years — here's why they're still so popular today

chaco sandals 3

  • Chaco sandals are a favorite in the outdoor community because they're quick-drying, durable, and very comfortable.
  • Though originally created with the needs of whitewater guides in mind, they've outgrown their roots to become a sandal embraced for everyday wear.
  • We tried its best-selling Z/1 Classic Sandal (in Lavender Frost, Turkish Sea, and Black, $105) and agreed they're the perfect summer shoe for adventuring and city life alike. Read our reviews below.
  • They feature a contoured footbed and adjustable straps, and they're available in a large number of stylish colors and prints.

It was the late 1980s, and whitewater and fly fishing guide Mark Paigen stood in a boat somewhere in western Colorado, looking down at his wrinkly, grit-covered feet. "My feet were in hell," he thought. "There had to be a better way."

While he suffered in wet running shoes all day, a few of the guides around him were wearing Teva sandals. He loved the idea of sandals made from synthetic materials rather than leather, because they wouldn't trap water and would let his feet dry in the sun.

In the last 30 years, Paigen's take on the sport sandal, Chaco, has become a cult-favorite among outdoor adventurers around the world.

It took a background in custom shoe making, a focused design plan, on-the-ground testing, and good old-fashioned word-of-mouth in tight-knit outdoors communities to get Chaco off the ground. Today, it's soaring, helping to drive growth for its parent company Wolverine Worldwide and regularly delighting fans with new styles and colors. The company even released a new monochrome collection that falls in line with today's colorful chunky shoe trend, partnering with retailers like Urban Outfitters to take the brand beyond its outdoor-community roots.

How Chacos came to be:

In a blog post for Tread Labs, Paigen explains that to take sport sandals to the next level, he knew he wanted the following components:

  1. Synthetic materials
  2. Anatomical strap placement
  3. A continuous pull-through strap
  4. High-quality components
  5. No Velcro

He made some pairs for himself and liked that the pull-through strap stayed secure to his feet, and that it was easy to remove sand simply by dipping his feet back in the water. When he took clients out on fly fishing trips, they inevitably asked him about his sandals because they trusted the experience and expertise of a guide.

Paigen traced these early Chaco customers' feet on paper and built them custom pairs. In the brand's unofficial beginnings, each pair cost $30. The official iteration and the brand's bestseller, the Z/1 Classic Sandal, costs $105 today.

chaco sandals 5

As the whitewater community grew in the '90s, so did talk about Chaco. Paigen met with a pedorthist, or a footwear specialist, to talk through how he could meet requests for an open-toe design (the original Chaco design had a toe loop, a design you can still find) that could still hold the foot securely. Thanks to those meetings, where Paigen learned the footbed also plays a role in securing the foot, Chacos today feature superior arch support, a hallmark of the brand.

With the sandal design finalized, all that was left to decide was a name. Paigen's best friend, putting on a cheesy French accent, said the sandal should be named Z/1 because it was "Zee one!" The "Z" also reflected the shoe's Z-strap design, which is adjustable and allows for a customized fit.

Taking a closer look at the Chaco Z/1 Classic Sandal

Chaco now sells many different sandal styles. Some with multiple straps or toe loops, others that look more like traditional flip-flops, and even a handful made from leather. However, the Z/1 remains the most recognizable and popular for the brand.

The Z/1 has a trademarked ChacoGrip rubber outsole, which is grippy and suitable for terrains from dusty trails to city sidewalks. The midsole is thick, and thicker at the arch, with a highly contoured, textured footbed. The uppers consist of a strong and quick-drying polyester jacquard strap and a buckle to help make strap adjustments.

We tried the Chaco Z/1 Classic Sandal in 3 colors (Lavender Frost, Turkish Sea, and Black). Here are our reviews:

chaco sandals 2

I've been wearing Chacos since I was 12 — I got my first pair for a big whitewater rafting trip and my summers away at camp, and I wore them every weekend hunting for sharks teeth in the creeks where I grew up (yes, I am actually a small swamp monster). They're the ultimate outdoor sandal; the base is thick enough to keep your feet removed from tiny pebbles and dirt, the grippy footbed keeps your foot secure enough that you won't slip and slide, and the straps are adjustable and dry quickly. If you're planning to spend a lot of time outdoors, there's no better option — and don't forget to show off the funny tan line they'll give you! It's sort of a right of passage in the outdoor world. Also, I'm officially trying to make Chacos a fashion thing — I mean, everyone's wearing chunky sandals right now anyway.

As far as sizing goes, the jury's kind of out. Chacos tells you to size up if you're in between sizes. I sized up to an 8 because I'm a 7.5 and they only come in whole sizes, but I would actually recommend sizing down. The size 8 is fine, but I think the arch takes up slightly too much surface area for my foot, and there's a little more area in the toe than I need, so I had to pull the strap really tight over the top of my foot to keep it from moving around. —Sally Kaplan, editor

I've heard a lot about Chacos from my more outdoorsy, hiking-prone friends, and never thought they'd be something I actually wear myself. Now, I wear them a few times a week since realizing how cute, casual, and comfortable they are.

Living in New York requires a lot of walking, so having a comfortable, breathable shoe is an absolute must. While I love to wear flats, having my toes out in the open makes a big difference while (basically) wading through the muggy air of the city. I could wear strappy sandals or heels, but Chacos are more sturdy and supportive, and just as lightweight. I keep the straps on the looser end, but I like that there's even the option to quickly adjust them with no fuss. It took a couple wears for my feet to get fully accustomed to the footbed and now it's like my feet have molded to these sandals.

I got them in the pretty Lavender Frost, which couldn't be a better color for the fun and effortless feel of the summer season. Definitely take advantage of all the bright colors Chaco has to offer because they'll instantly spruce up your outfit. —Connie Chen, reporter

chaco sandals

I know that $105 is a lot for a sandal, but Chacos have been a mainstay of summer outdoor activities for years, so you know that you are paying for the quality. For years I was firmly against wearing sandals, but I've softened my stance recently. Dad style is in lately, anyway, and if you pair it with normal clothes it doesn't look weird at all.

When it's really hot outside, having your feet exposed to the air can be a huge help in staying cool. The Chaco footbed is also sturdy and super comfortable. I also like that it's pretty thick, which keeps my feet a little further away from the ground so I won't stub my toes and or get as dirty as I would with a flip flop.

My only small complaint is that the strap, once tightened, was kind of long. I didn't drag on the ground, but it was enough to notice when walking so I had to tuck it behind another strap. It didn't affect the comfort of the shoe, but it's worth noting. Anyway, I could spend all day in these shoes. I would say that if you're still ambivalent about sandals, give these a chance. Flip flops are for the locker room — get some Chacos and head outside. —Breton Fischetti, vice president

Where and how to shop Chacos

You can find Chaco men's and women's sandals online at many retailers, including Amazon, Nordstrom, REI, and Urban Outfitters. Their availability at these various stores speaks to how the shoe is increasingly blurring the lines between sport and fashion — the sandal equivalent of Nike streetwear.

You can also shop the full range of colors and styles, including web exclusive and limited-edition products, at Chaco's website. If you want to create a one-of-a-kind custom pair of sandals, go to that official website. Standard shipping is free and express shipping is free for orders over $120.

Since some colors and styles sell out, you might need to check all the websites above to find the pair you want. Once you do, you'll find yourself wearing them to hikes, lunch dates, flights, festivals, and more.

There are 7 specific emails you'll send during your job hunt. Here's a copy-paste template for each of them.

  • She writes that when it comes to the correspondence you send during your job hunt, one email could be what lands you that dream job — or stands in the way of it.
  • Below are her examples for all the emails you'll need to send during every stage of a job search, from the "help me get a job" message when you first start your hunt to the right way to negotiate your offer.
  • The best emails are upbeat, polite, and personalized, but succinct. Your goal is to display your strengths and not pester your audience.
  • Click here for more BI Prime stories.

If you're like me, sending an important email isn't a quick process.

No, it typically involves writing, re-writing, grabbing a second cup of coffee, editing, and even asking your co-worker to forget whatever deadline they're on and give your very important message a once-over.

And when it comes to your job search? Forget your co-worker — if you have to send a cover letter or an interview thank-you note, you're firing off drafts of that bad boy to your sister, your best friend, your uncle who worked as a recruiter 15 years ago, and anyone else who might be willing to help. After all, this one email could be what lands you that dream job — or stands in the way of it.

Fret no more. After writing (and reading) many of these job search emails over the years, I've compiled the best ones all in one place. Copy, paste (and personalize, of course), and you can spend less time typing emails and more time on deciding which networking event to hit up tonight.

1. The "help me get a job" email

Purpose: To tell your network you're on the hunt for a new job and ask for their help.

When to send: When you're starting your search.

Send to: Anyone you know who could be useful in your search, like former bosses and colleagues and well-connected friends and family members.

Pro tip: It's OK to send this as a mass email;  just BCC everyone. But if you know people who could really help — for example, friends who work at a company you're applying to — leave them off the group email and send a personalized note.

The template:

Hi there,

If you're receiving this email, you've been a big part of my professional life. (Thank you!) I'm reaching out with an update on my career, and a small favor to ask.

As many of you know, I've been working as a [job title] at [company] for [number] years. It's been a [good/great/interesting/incredible] job, and I've had the opportunity to [list 2-3 key achievements].

Now, I've been exploring new opportunities that will allow me to [describe what you're looking for in your next job — and keep it positive!].

My ask: If you know anyone hiring someone with my background, please let me know! I'm targeting job titles like [2-3 job titles you're interested in] and am especially interested in working at companies like [3-5 companies you're interested in]. My resume is attached to this email, and my LinkedIn profile can be found here [link].

Thank you in advance for your help. And if there's anything I can do to help YOU, please let me know. I'd love to return the favor!

Warm regards,

[Your name]

2. The "help me get a job at your company" email

Purpose: Networking is still the best way to get human eyes on your resume, so if you have a contact who works at a company you're interested in, it can pay to reach out!

When to send: Before you apply online.

Send to: Any connections you have at companies you're interested in. But rather than reaching out to everyone (that, uh, could be seen as overkill), start with those who are most likely to help, like recruiters or people who work in your field.

Pro tip: Asking your contacts to submit your resume for you can come off as pushy. With this email, you're asking for their advice rather than a favor. In my experience, if they can refer you or offer additional help, they'll let you know.

The template:

Hi [name],

I hope all is well! [Add a personal question or update, if you know this person well.]

I'm reaching out because I know you've been at [their company] for a while, and I'd love to hear more about your experience.

I'm planning to apply for the [position title] role, which seems like a perfect match for me: [Describe in 1-2 sentences why you're a fit for this job]. (I've also attached my resume, in case it's helpful.)

But before I send my application, I thought I'd see if you have any advice. Specifically, do you know who the hiring manager is, so I can address my cover letter to them? And any insider tips on what they're looking for in this role, beyond what's listed in the job description? [Note: Feel free to personalize this section with 1-2 other questions.]

Any insight you have would be so appreciated. And if there's anything I can do to help YOU, please let me know. I'd love to return the favor.

All the best,

[Your name]

3. The cover letter

Purpose: Silly though it may seem when you're submitting a resume with all of your job history on it, many hiring managers still care about cover letters. Plus, it's a great way to show your personality and interest in the job.

When to send: When you're submitting your application.

Send to: Ideally, the hiring manager or person who'd be your future boss. Try to do some research on who that person is (the letter above may come in handy).

Pro tips: Consider the template below just that — a template. You can and should tailor your cover letter to the job you're applying for. (Recruiter Jenny Foss offers some great tips on The Muse.)

The template:

Dear [first name],

I'm excited to apply for the [position title] role at [company]. Here's why: [Describe in 1-2 sentences why you're excited about the position and company, being as specific as possible.]

A bit about me: [A 2-3 sentence description of your background, highlighting the parts that are most relevant to the job.]

I'd love the chance to help [company] by [describe 2-3 ways in which your background could add value to the job, again being as specific as possible.]

Feel free to reach out at [email] or [phone number]. I look forward to hearing from you!

All the best,

[Your name]

4. The application follow-up

Purpose: To make sure your application didn't get lost in the black hole of the internet — plus, following up (nicely) shows persistence.

When to send: One to two weeks after you've applied and haven't heard anything back.

Send to: Whoever you sent your application to (or, if you applied to an online system, see if you can find an email address for the hiring manager).

Pro tips: Follow up emails can get annoying — fast. If a company requests no follow-ups, obey that rule. And above all, make sure you're being polite and respectful.

The template:

Dear [Name],

I hope your week is going well! I'm reaching out because I recently submitted an application to the [position title] role and wanted to make sure you received it.

A quick refresher: I have [number] years of experience in [2-3 things you do best], most recently working for [company] as a [job title]. I'd love to bring that experience to [company], where I know you need help [what you'd be hired to do]. My resume and cover letter are attached here for your reference.

I'd love the opportunity to share more about my background and learn more about the role. Thanks in advance for your consideration!

Warm regards,

job interview

5. The interview thank-you

Purpose: Primarily, because it's the expected and polite thing to do, but it can also show that you're truly excited about the job.

When to send: The evening of or the morning after your interview.

Send to: Anyone you've interviewed with, as well as the recruiter if you're working with one.

Pro tips: Some hiring managers appreciate handwritten thank-you cards, too — and if you get the vibe that yours would, send one. But to avoid being seen as "that one candidate who didn't send a thank-you," shoot over an email, too.

The template:

Dear [name],

Thank you so much for taking the time to meet with me today. I really enjoyed meeting you and getting a feel for the position and office.

Our conversation today got me even more excited about the possibility of working for [company]. Specifically, I'd love to help [2-3 specific things you would do if hired].

I look forward to hearing about the next steps in the hiring process. In the meantime, feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

All the best,

[Your name]

6. The rejection response

Purpose: Getting a "no" from a job you wanted is a bummer, but remember it doesn't necessarily mean this door is closed forever. Sending a nice note letting the recruiter know you'd like to stay in touch might lead to something down the line.

When to send: The day after you receive the bad news.

Send to: Whoever let you know you didn't get the job.

Pro tips: This template includes a line asking the hiring manager for feedback. You don't have to include it, but it could give you useful insight for the future.

The template:

Dear [name],

Thanks for your email. While I'm disappointed that I didn't get the role, I appreciate you letting me know, as well as giving me the opportunity to interview with you and the team.

If you have any feedback for me that might be helpful as I continue my search, please let me know. And if you're open to it, I'd love to be considered for future roles with the company. I know my experience in [your field] would be an asset as you continue to grow.

Thanks again for the opportunity. I look forward to staying in touch.

All the best,

[Your name]

job rejection

7. The "thanks for the offer" response

Purpose: To show your excitement! But, even if you know you're going to take the offer, don't say yes right away. You'll want some time to review all the details of the offer — as well as negotiate.

When to send: Pretty quickly after you get the offer. You don't want to leave them hanging!

Send to: Whoever sent you the offer — usually the recruiter or HR.

Pro tips: This template includes an optional paragraph on salary negotiation. Depending on your role and relationship with the recruiter, you may want to have this conversation over the phone, but if it feels appropriate, you can add it here.

The template:

Dear [Name],

I'm thrilled to see this email in my inbox! Thank you so much for the offer — I'm very excited about the possibility of joining the team.

If it's OK with you, I'd like to review the offer over the next day or so to make sure I've looked over all the details. But just a couple of questions in the meantime:

[Insert any questions you have that weren't spelled out in the offer letter, such as: What would my official start date be? Do you have information on company benefits that I can review? Who would my supervisor or direct reports be?]

Also, thank you for spelling out the compensation package. Based on my experience level and the immediate value I know I would bring to the organization, I was hoping that my [base salary, bonus, total package] would be closer to [number or %]. Is there any flexibility with this number?

Thanks in advance for this information — and again, for the offer. I'll be in touch in [offer your timeline].

All the best,

[Your name]

  • Zipping is a popular method for compressing files, and you can zip and unzip files on Windows 10 in several ways without installing any additional software.
  • You can zip files by using Windows' right-click menu to "send" them to a zipped folder.
  • You can unzip quickly by double-clicking the zip file and dragging the individual files out to the desktop.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Zipping is one of the oldest, most commonly used methods for compressing files. It's used to save space and transmit them more quickly.

In fact, it's so common that zip compression and decompression is built into Windows. Here is how to zip files, plus two methods for unzipping them.

The best programmable coffee makers you can buy

$
0
0
  • Programmable coffee makers remain popular since they can be programmed to brew your coffee in advance.
  • The best model overall, Cuisinart's Coffee Plus 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker, takes it a step further with a built-in hot water dispenser for making breakfast at the same time your coffee is brewing.

If you're the type who blearily wanders around the kitchen until you've had your first cup of coffee, a programmable coffee maker could be for you. Some machines allow you to program your coffee up to 24 hours in advance, ensuring that a fresh, hot cup of coffee is available as soon as you enter the kitchen in the morning. Heck, some will even grind the beans for you.

As with other variants of coffee machines, programmable coffee makers fit all types of budgets and coffee drinkers. You can start with a bare-bones model that lets you program a basic cup, or splurge on a pricier machine that lets you make specialty drinks.

Most programmable coffee makers have some sort of display, the most common being an LCD screen. There are generally buttons or dials that let you select the time you wish to program. Many machines also let you choose the desired strength and amount. Many programmable coffee makers on this list can brew up to 12 cups, although some have a capacity of 10 cups or less. You can choose to brew single servings as well.

Aside from programmability, size, and price, certain features can help make the decision easier. If flavor is crucial, you'll want to consider the brewing temperature. In general, coffee makers that reach a range of 195 to 205 degrees Fahrenheit deliver the most precise results. Some machines come with a warming plate to keep your beverages hot after brewing, which is particularly helpful if you're not going to be drinking your coffee right away, or you want the remaining coffee to stay warm.

Impurities in the water, such as chlorine, could also impact taste of the coffee; machines with carbon block filters work particularly well. However, they generally don't make a noticeable difference if your water tastes good to begin with.

Here are the best programmable coffee makers you can buy:

Updated on 07/25/2019 by Les Shu: Updated prices, links, and formatting.

Keep reading for more details about our top picks.

The best programmable coffee maker overall

The Cuisinart Coffee Plus 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker not only makes coffee, but its built-in hot water system also lets you make tea, oatmeal, and more.

You won't have to fire up the kettle with this Cuisinart programmable coffeemaker, which comes with its own hot water system. The machine can brew coffee and get your favorite tea or snack ready at the same time with hot water on demand. The hot water is ready almost instantly, so all you need to do is press the lever down to dispense it. The hot water system is controlled via a power button and can be used even if you don't want coffee, or if you're already done brewing a cup. If you're wondering how hot the water actually gets, one user measured it with a digital thermometer and found it to be 186 degrees Fahrenheit.

If your day can't start before you've had a cup of coffee, you'll appreciate this machine's 24-hour programmability. If you need to sneak a sip or two before the brew cycle is finished, the Brew Pause feature lets you remove the cup or carafe without making a mess. This particular model brews up to 12 cups, and has a one-to-four cup setting. A slightly smaller 10-cup model is also available. However, keep in mind that most models this size actually brew cups that are closer to 5 or 6 ounces, rather than the full 8 ounces, according to Consumer Reports.

Its generous array of features combined with an affordable price also helps set this programmable coffee maker apart as a top pick. You'll find low, medium, and high carafe temperature control settings for optimal results. The machine automatically turns on and shuts off. When it's time for cleaning, simply use the self-cleaning function. The machine comes with one charcoal water filter and a gold tone filter to eliminate any impurities that can impact the taste of your coffee or other beverages.

Speaking of taste, it seems the machine works equally well with freshly ground coffee as well as pre-ground coffee. "I have used pre-ground coffee and freshly ground whole bean coffee (using my coffee grinder) with equally great results," wrote one satisfied customer.

Pros: Separate hot water system, 24-hour programmability, carafe temperature control

Cons: Doesn't have a backlit display, awkwardly placed water fill container, not the quietest machine

The best value programmable coffee maker

From its high brew temperature to delay brew and auto-pause features, the Mr. Coffee Optimal Brew 10-Cup Thermal Coffeemaker is a solid value.

If you're looking for overall value in a programmable coffee maker, consider this Mr. Coffee model. For starters, it's equipped with many features you'd expect on a higher-end coffee maker, such as the delay brew function and an auto-pause feature that lets you grab a cup of coffee before brewing is finished. The machine automatically shuts off after two hours, which is a big plus if you're the forgetful type.

If you can't get to your coffee right away (or you want it to stay warm for additional cups), you'll appreciate the double-walled stainless steel carafe. Unlike some models in this price range that come with a glass carafe, the extra insulation in this thermal carafe maintains a warm, but not scalding, temperature. Not only does this keep your coffee from tasting burnt, you also won't have to rely on a warming plate or a microwave to get your coffee back to a drinkable temperature.

Based on several user comments, the machine is a worthwhile pick for those who like strong coffee. "If you enjoy lethally strong coffee that can bend a spoon, then follow the instructions that came with the coffee maker. I use about half the grounds they recommend using for a normal pot of coffee," one owner suggested. Another said, "I am measuring my coffee for the first time ever, which makes for more consistent coffee." The same user suggests the deep filter holder makes it easy to produce coffee that's stronger than normal.

Whether you like your coffee strong or mild, the brewing temperature also plays a role. This machine brews up to 205 degrees Fahrenheit. According to Black Bear Coffee, the ideal water brewing temperature is between 195 and 205 degrees Fahrenheit, with 205 being the optimal temperature. Anything less than 195 degrees Fahrenheit leads to improper extraction, while temperatures more than 212 degrees Fahrenheit will cause the water to boil and burn the coffee. A built-in water filtration system helps to remove up to 97% of chlorine.

Pros: Delay brew feature, greatly reduces chlorine taste from water, high brewing temperature

Cons: Plastic construction cheapens the appearance, produces a fair amount of steam when brewing, doesn't have a permanent filter

The best coffee maker with built-in bean grinder

Not only is the Krups Grind and Brew 10-Cup Coffee Maker fully programmable, you can grind coffee at the same time.

The highlight of the Krups Grind and Brew 10-Cup Coffee Maker is its built-in grinder. Whether you're a bit short on space or you simply prefer the convenience, having a built-in grinder lets you grind fresh coffee, and then brew it — all within one machine.

The conical burr grinder has five settings, so you can choose between coarse and fine grounds, and anywhere in-between. According to The New York Times, a good quality burr grinder cuts beans into evenly sized particles, as opposed to powder or chunks. You can adjust the settings on this machine according to the type of bean you're using as well as your desired drink.

As far as built-in grinders go, this one stands out for its versatility. Many espresso drinkers find they can get the grind down to a fine powder that works well enough for homemade espressos. One user commented: "The blades are sharp and very low in the grinder, allowing this unit to pick up and pulverize any stray beans," adding that it typically takes less than a minute to grind the beans. Another said it takes approximately 10 to 12 seconds to grind up beans to espresso consistency. Several owners mention that cleaning the storage container can be a bit of a chore. Using a smaller brush can help reach into tight spaces for easier cleaning.

If you're looking for user-friendly features to help make your mornings easier, you'll appreciate the straightforward controls on the Krups Grind and Brew. For starters, you can push a button to select anywhere from 2 to 10 cups. An auto-on feature allows you to program the machine to start at a time that's most convenient for you. One user commented on the overall user-friendly nature of the coffee machine, saying that after adding beans to the grinder, "you just add the water for the number of cups you need, select the cups needed, and the coffee pot does the work for you." Then, the machine will "automatically take the correct amount of beans to grind depending on how many cups you want and at the strength you choose."

Pros: Built-in burr grinder, auto-start function, three brew strength settings

Cons: Grounds can get stuck on the container walls, carafe lid prone to opening when pouring, can get loud when grinding coffee

The best budget programmable coffee maker

The Black & Decker Programmable Coffee Maker is a budget-friendly machine with a large capacity, digital control panel, and plenty of features for the price.

It's not the fanciest coffee maker around, but the Black & Decker Programmable Coffee Maker gets the job done. There's a lot to appreciate for such an affordable price, from the 12-cup capacity to a water window that lets you keep track of the amount.

The coffee maker stands 13.3 inches high and 8.4 inches wide, making it a handy choice if you're looking for a compact coffee maker for your home, office, or both. You'll also find a digital control panel with soft-touch buttons. It's easy to program the machine to make coffee ahead of time thanks to its 24-hour programming functionality.

This programmable coffee maker puts out 975 watts of brewing power. In comparison, you'll need roughly 1,000 watts to get water to boil in 5 minutes. But since the machine doesn't need to boil water to make coffee, it will produce a cup in just a few minutes. Many owners find that this coffee maker also maintains an ideal temperature before and after brewing, even when the carafe is on the warming plate.

One user said the machine will "maintain a nice, hot temperature while the burner is on without tasting burnt." If you simply can't wait for the brewing cycle to finish, you can grab a cup before it's done thanks to the brew-pause function. And as long as the glass carafe is properly positioned underneath the basket, you shouldn't experience any dripping or leaking.

As far as taste is concerned, the machine tends to yield agreeable results. "I still use my French presses for brewing premium roasts, but for Folgers, Maxwell House, and other mainstream brands, this is all the machine you will ever need," said one user. However, a handful of user reviews suggest using a bit less than usual for this coffee maker. As one user noted, the coffee pot "tends to 'explode' the coffee grounds into the water reservoir if you use too much."

Pros: Small footprint, brew pause feature makes it easy to sneak a cup, removable filter basket

Cons: Can be tough to see the water level, can't remove carafe lid for cleaning, warming plate surface may peel over time

The best programmable coffee maker for specialty drinks

The Ninja Hot and Cold Brewed System brews your favorite hot and cold drinks, and it comes with a built-in frother for even more fun.

The only machine I can compare the Ninja Hot and Cold Brewed System to is an espresso maker I had several years ago. While that old machine also had a built-in frother, its capabilities were limited to making one delicious cup of espresso at a time. This combination machine works equally well for making coffee and tea. In fact, it comes with its own tea brew basket, which you can use for loose leaf and bagged tea. There are equally numerous options for making different types of coffee and tea.

When it comes to making coffee, a specific menu illuminates to show your options. Start with a basic cup, or go for more flavor with the rich-brew setting. You can opt to make coffee over ice, as well as cold brew and specialty drinks. Programming the machine may take a few minutes longer than expected, but the extended menu and sizing options ensure you get the coffee you want, when you want it. A delay brew option lets you make your favorite hot beverage in advance. When the beverage is done, it's automatically kept warm via the hot plate. However, you can adjust the plate to a warm setting instead to ensure your drink doesn't get too hot.

Ninja doesn't specifically state the brewing temperature, but at least one avid coffee drinker believes the water temperature lies somewhere in the sweet spot between 195 and 205 degrees Fahrenheit. "Brewed at the perfect temperature, you can brew cheap coffee grounds or high-end fresh ground beans and both come out with outstanding well-balanced flavor," the coffee drinker claims. Ninja recommends a medium grind for best results when making your cup of coffee.

The model we tried comes with a thermal carafe, which helps to keep your coffee warm, but you can also opt for the model with a glass carafe, which knocks the price down to $159.98 on Amazon.

Pros: Pull-out tray accommodates smaller mugs, makes specialty coffee and tea, one-touch technology

Cons: Stainless steel smudges easily, doesn't have an espresso setting, doesn't produce the hottest coffee
