google chrome app

  • You can update Google Chrome on your computer or mobile device in a few quick steps.
  • Google Chrome updates automatically on desktop computers, but there may be times when you need to manually update.
  • Your bookmarks and other saved data will not be affected when the browser is updated.
  • Updating Google Chrome on mobile is the same as updating other apps on your device.
  • Visit BusinessInsider.com for more stories.

Google Chrome updates automatically as new versions are released on a computer. However, there may be times when you want or need to manually check for updates and install.

There are a couple of ways to check for updates on desktop, but updating on mobile is the same as updating other apps from your phone's app store.

How to update Google Chrome on your computer

1. Open Google Chrome then, click the hamburger menu (three dots) at the top right corner of the browser.

2. Click "Update Google Chrome" if it's available from the menu. You'll only see this option if an update is available.

3. Click "Relaunch" once Google Chrome has updated. You can choose to update later if you would rather wait.

Tips for updating Chrome on desktop

  • If you notice a small arrow in place of your three dot menu, updates have already been downloaded and you need to restart Google Chrome to apply the update. The arrow will change color to indicate how many days an update has been available.
  • Any open tabs will reopen when Google Chrome relaunches so you don't lose them.
  • Your bookmarks, settings, and extensions will not be affected.
  • If you need to check your browser's version number, you can find it under Help > About Google Chrome.

Chrome_help_about

  • You can continue to use Google Chrome normally while updates are downloading.

How to update Google Chrome on your Android device

1. Launch the Google Play Store on your phone or tablet.

2. From the menu, tap "My apps & games." Lists of your apps will be available under two sections, "Installed" and "Updates."

  • You will not lose any open tabs after Google Chrome updates.
  • Saved bookmarks and other settings will not be affected.
  • You may not be able to use Google Chrome while it's being updated.

23 dismal photos of everyday life in North Korea that a visiting photographer captured on his phone

Xiaolu Chu, life in north korea, train ride, photography

The North Korean government is notoriously secretive. Upon entering the country, visitors are instructed on what they can and cannot take pictures of. Customs agents inspect your cellphone and other digital devices, including cameras, tablets, and storage cards, for banned content.

These restrictions prompted Getty photographer Xiaolu Chu to travel by train through the country in August 2015, documenting everyday life through his phone lens. He told Tech Insider that whipping out his DSLR camera was too risky in some of the villages, where the locals reported sightings to the police.

While some images were deleted during run-ins with the police, Chu shared the remainder of his trip with us. Here's what it was like:

Chu took the long way around during his visit to North Korea.

Most Chinese tourists enter by train through Sinuiju or by plane through Pyongyang. He instead traveled to Russia so he could access the port at Tumangang.

The train ride from Tumangang to Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea, lasts a day. It was canceled because of a dispute between North Korea and South Korea.

"Fortunately, we had a whole day to go out and take some pictures in the village," Chu says.

He saw scores of people living in abject poverty. Many begged for money.

"There are nearly no fat people in North Korea, everyone looks very thin," Chu says.

Many of the residential buildings looked run down and in need of repair.

When he later returned to the train station, he noticed portraits of the country's former leaders and the words "long live" scattered throughout.

At night, these shrines were the only structures lit up in the village. Other buildings were consumed by darkness.

The next day, he boarded a train for the nation's capital.

A customs agent on board checked his tablet to make sure it wasn't GPS-enabled. The government also jams signals as a security measure.

He also checked his laptop and DSLR camera. Chu says the agent had no trouble operating the devices — with the exception of the MacBook.

The train chugged along, giving Chu snapshots of everyday life. This boy was collecting corn cobs beside the tracks.

Many people rode bicycles, as seen at a railway crossing en route.

Some scenes were quaint. Children took an afternoon dip in a river.

But anytime the train pulled into a station, there were painful reminders of the poor living conditions. This little boy begged for money at a station in Hamhung.

Korean People's Army soldiers rested on the tracks.

Whenever he hopped out, Chu shot photos on his phone. "DSLR is too obvious to take pictures in that condition," he says, "as people in the village were extremely vigilant."

Several locals reported him to the police. "A policeman and a solider stopped us and checked our cellphone. I hid most of the pictures, [but a] few pictures were deleted," he says.

Tourism guidelines encourage visitors to take photos of the student-exercise groups. These kids were rehearsing for a celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Workers' Party of Korea.

Photography of anti-American protests is also welcomed. These students were marching against South Korea and the US.

Eventually, Chu reached the railway station in Pyongyang.

We asked Chu if he was scared of retribution for publishing he photos.

"No, absolutely not," he said.

How to change the 'Significant Locations' saved on your iPhone, or delete the list

0
0

iPhone X

  • You can change your iPhone's "Significant Locations" by deleting the ones currently saved and allowing your iPhone's location service to reassign a more accurate spot.
  • As you're traveling, your iPhone may mark certain spots you visit frequently as Significant Locations, and will use these when giving suggestions in Apple Maps and other apps.
  • However, the exact locations of these Significant Locations can sometimes be off, even for a place you visit frequently, and you can change or delete them.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Apple's "Significant Locations" service is often helpful no matter how you travel. When it works properly, it provides a saved location as a starting point for Apple Maps to give you driving time and directions, give you a reliable walking route, or as an automatic pickup spot for your rideshare.

While ideally this saves you the hassle of having to type in your address, unfortunately the system doesn't always work perfectly.

When an iPhone gets a Significant Location wrong, the effects can cause delays and inconvenience. For example, you may receive a notification that your rideshare app driver has arrived, only to realize the location of the driver is a whole block away from your current spot. There is a way to fix an incorrect saved location, however.

While you can't program in your own suggestion, you can delete the location your iPhone has incorrectly saved and allow it to rediscover a more accurate spot. This can be very useful if, for example, you're going to be staying at a hotel for a few days and your iPhone has saved an inaccurate regular pickup point as the hotel's address.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

A photographer visited North Korea 6 times to see what life is really like — here's what he saw

0

NorthKoreaPhotos

  • Photographer Eric Lafforgue has visited Kim Jung Un's North Korea six times to photograph life in the totalitarian country.
  • Lafforgue was banned after his sixth trip to North Korea, in 2012, after he made an off-handed comment about a group of Spanish tourists visiting the country.
  • Much of what he saw was the more affluent areas of North Korea, like Pyongyang, but he requested to visit far-flung destinations. He found that the further he traveled from Pyongyang, the more he saw the poverty in which most North Koreans live.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

After publishing hundreds of photos from six visits to North Korea, it was an offhand comment that got French photographer Eric Lafforgue banned.

Lafforgue had seen Spanish tourists wearing Kim Jung Il shirts and told a friend that they likely wouldn't wear them in Barcelona. The Spaniards heard it and told the guide. One month after returning from the trip, he received a letter with screen captures of his photos, saying they were not good for North Korea and that he could not return.

That was in 2012.

"They know that when I come, I take pictures. They prefer the tourism money, until it causes a problem for one of the people in charge," Lafforgue told Business Insider.

Lafforgue has always been well aware of this, but throughout the years, he's played "their game," as he calls it, to produce some incredible photography.

"The North Korean regime controls everything that goes out of the country," he said. "Even me, when they let me take a picture of kids smiling, its because it's good for the country. I take those pictures because there is a real part of the people that are happy and I want to document that ... North Koreans are brainwashed, but they live like everybody in the world."

Lafforgue shared a stunning selection of photos from his many trips to North Korea with us. Many of the photos are available in a calender Lafforgue produced with North Korea-watching website NK News.

This is Pyongyang airport, where Lafforgue flew into.

All tourists must go on a guided tour when they visit North Korea. According to Lafforgue, the guides show more to tourists than stated journalists, so he always declared himself a tourist.

Each time Lafforgue visited, the guides tried to take him on the same "classic" tour to the expected sites.

To avoid this, he started coming when there were special events like the Arirang Mass Games.

The Mass Games are held every year to tell the story of North Korea. They include complicated synchronized performances and it is considered a great honor to take part.

Lafforgue took this portrait on National Day, when citizens celebrate the North Korean declaration of state in 1948.

On April 15th, North Koreans celebrate the birthday of Kim Il Sung. More than 100,000 dancers perform on Kim Il Sung square.

Lafforgue says that North Korea has changed dramatically from when he first visited in 2008. The only thing that hasn't changed is the regime, he says.

When he first visited in 2008, almost no foreigners visited the country.

Now, he says North Koreans are far more used to seeing people from all over the world. These women are Koreans that grew up and live in Japan. They were touring the country at the same time as Lafforgue.

Many North Koreans now have goods from China, like computers, DVD players, and clothes. Despite the backpack one was wearing, Lafforgue says the children he spoke to didn't understand who Mickey Mouse was.

Lafforgue says that he was able to have candid conversations with many North Koreans, so long as he stayed away from politics. Many loved to talk about sports teams.

One of the main tourist attractions in Pyongyang is the War Museum, which depicts the Korean War as the North Koreans' victorious struggle over the American imperialists.

Portraits of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jung Il are everywhere in the country, overlooking the people. It's so prominent that Lafforgue did an entire series on just the "Great Leaders'" portraits.

Every year, the Pyongyang Floral Festival celebrates the birthday of Kim Jung Il. At the entrance to the Floral exhibition, North Koreans take portraits in front of their leaders.

There are many "fun fairs" in Pyongyang and other cities now. The fun fairs are amusement parks with many rides for North Koreans to go on and games to play.

This scene of emotion between two lovers is very rare in North Korea. Most of the time, women and men do not congregate in public together.

Lafforgue said there are many twins and triplets without parents, like these triplets singing at an orphanage. The official reason is that parents cannot afford to raise 2 or 3 kids at the same time.

A teacher instructs children at Kim Jong Suk school in Pyongyang, while a child attempts to guess the name of each animal. Other children are forbidden to help.

Most North Korean kids are enrolled in "pioneer" programs. They must take part in activities, like helping farm the fields.

North Korean men must stay in the army for at least six years, during which they have minimal communications with their families.

On special occasions, North Koreans carry a special type of plastic flower called a kimjonglia.

A soldier stands in front of the Ryugyong Hotel. It has been in construction since 1987 and has yet to open. Egypt-based Orascom has agreed to help finish the tower in exchange for rights to providing mobile phone service in North Korea.

Many North Koreans now have mobile phones. Orascom says their service covers 75% of North Korea's population. Still, mobile phones can only call inside the country and no foreign phones are allowed in.

Lafforgue says that many rural North Koreans are more distrustful of foreigners, because they are less educated. This woman was friendly, however.

Lafforgue once stayed with North Koreans on the Chilbo Sea. He says that the North Koreans' houses in the beach village were nice, because they host tourists, but there was a very poor village within walking distance.

This North Korean couple is one of the families that hosted Lafforgue and the other tourists at the beach village.

The chief of the Chilbo Sea beach village showed Lafforgue a picture of his son, who he says will stay in the North Korean army "until the reunification of Korea."

Here, North Koreans read the news while waiting in the the Puhung subway station. Puhung means rehabilitation. All 17 subway stations in Pyongyang have names like Rehabilitation, Triumphant Return, Paradise, and Glory.

Pyongyang may be where privileged North Koreans live...

But that doesn't mean its all up to date. Many buildings are old with no heat or running water.

Lafforgue often requested to see distant sights in North Korea, because he says that the most unfiltered view of North Korea can be seen while on the road.

On Lafforgues' sixth trip, he was finally able to visit Chongjin in the North, where he saw many instances of extreme poverty. The guides took his and other tourists' cameras during that part of the trip.

Lafforgue was outright stopped from taking a picture only twice. He says if you act like a tourist would in any other country, it is unlikely that officials will bother you.

Lafforgue says that he loved photographing North Korea because he wanted to capture real emotion among the people. "They're not robots," he said.

'Why is there an open window in the kids' play area 11 stories off the ground?': The mother of the toddler who fell from a Royal Caribbean cruise ship said she blames the company for her daughter's death

Royal Caribbean Freedom of the Seas

Kimberly Wiegand, the mother of Chloe, an 18-month-old toddler who died on a Royal Caribbean International cruise ship after falling from the ship's 11th floor, said in an interview with NBC News that she blames Royal Caribbean for the incident.

"We obviously blame them," Wiegand told the network. Later in the interview she said the company should be held responsible for the incident in court.

Chloe fell from a window in a children's play area that had been opened, NBC News reported. Wiegand told the network that she wondered why the window had been left open.

"We have a lot of questions, primarily, why is there an open window in the kids' play area 11 stories off the ground?" she said.

Royal Caribbean told Wiegand that it had opened the window to ventilate the area.

"Well to that I would say, get a fan," she told NBC News. "Come up with some other mechanism to make your guests comfortable rather than creating a tremendous safety hazard that cost our child her life."

Chloe's grandfather, Sam, who had placed her on a railing behind the open window, did not realize the window was open, Wiegand said.

"He was extremely hysterical," she told NBC News. "The thing that he has repeatedly told us is, 'I believed that there was glass.' He will cry over and over. At no point ever, ever, has Sam ever put our kids in danger."

A Royal Caribbean representative directed Business Insider's request for comment to the Puerto Rican authorities who are investigating the incident.

"We are deeply saddened by this incident, and our hearts go out to the family," the Royal Caribbean representative said.

The Puerto Rico Department of Justice could not immediately be reached for comment.

How 16 of the oldest companies on Earth have been making money for centuries, from guns to beer to shipping

0

frapin cognac

  • Most companies today survive for about 15 years.
  • Many of the longest-lasting businesses produce food items, alcohol, or even guns — things people have evidently been interested in for centuries.
  • The oldest company in the world is a hotel called Nisiyama Onsen Keiunkan in Japan, which opened in 705.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Larger companies, like those listed on the S&P 500, tend to live about 15 years today. So there must be something special about the businesses that have persisted for 300, 500, or 1,300 years.

We looked into the data on the world's oldest companies, and a few themes became clear: People have wanted to eat, drink, learn things, or perhaps kill each other once in a while for a long time. That's why many of the businesses on this list are breweries, restaurants, or manufacturers. One of the longest-lasting, Beretta, is a gun manufacturer.

Here's a list of companies far older than most nations, including the United States.

SEE ALSO: 10 quotes from ancient thinkers that show they figured life out 2,000 years ago

Founded 705 — Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan in Yamanashi, Japan

The hot spring hotel has been in operation since 705, making it the oldest running hotel in the world, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.

The inn has been run by the same family for 52 generations, according to Japan Page, the English-language expat site. The secret to its success is a sense of inter-generational pride, the report says

... There are even some staff whose families have held the same post for generations, passing it from parent to child to grandchild. All the same, the staff are committed and courteous, earning wages for themselves and their families. They put their all into offering a spirit of service that stems from a shared desire to protect the inn. This unflagging commitment and hospitality is drawing attention from the hotel industries worldwide.

In management-speak, we call that alignment. Generations of it.

Founded 803 — Stiftskeller St. Peter in Salzburg, Austria

This restaurant inside St. Peter's Abbey in Salzburg, Austria, may be the oldest continuously running restaurant in Europe, and perhaps the world.

Its reputation precedes it. The classy dining spot was written about by Alcuin, a follower of the world-conquering emperor Charlemagne back in 803. According to Atlas Obscura, "the restaurant has also been host to countless dignitaries over its 1,200-year history, including cardinals, kings, and in more modern times Bill Clinton and Clint Eastwood."

Founded 900 — Sean's Bar in Athlone, Ireland

Sean's Bar is one of the oldest bars in Ireland and also in Europe. Fun fact: Excavations have revealed mugs and coins from centuries of carousing.

The secret of its success? Location, location, location. From the bar's site

... Sean's Bar is located in the very heart of Ireland, on the banks of the beautiful River Shannon at its intersection with the Esker Riada - the ancient route carved by glaciers that allowed travelers safe passage across the bog for thousands of years. You can find us just next to Athlone Castle, a 12th century Norman Castle whose residents may have frequented the pub!

Founded 1040 — Weihenstephan Brewery in Freising, Germany

Beer has been made at the Weihenstephan Abbey in Bavaria for nearly a thousand years, making it the oldest brewery in the world. Its secret is obvious: The brewery makes incredibly delicious beer — the original brew has an absurd 98% rating on BeerAdvocate, the site for beer nerds.

Founded 1270 — Frapin in Segonzac, France

Some of the finest cognac in the world — and one of the oldest distilleries still around — is found in the southwest of France, where the Frapin family has been using the same vineyards since it opened.

The result is the highest quality spirit.

"Unlike many of its fellow producers, Frapin does not turn to outside growers for grapes and is able to apply the most exacting standards of quality control at every level of production, starting on the vines," according to Palm Bay International Spirits. "Frapin cognacs are, as a result, the epitome of excellence."

Founded 1498 — The Shore Porters Society in Aberdeen, Scotland

If you've needed anything moved in the past 500 years in Aberdeen, Scotland, you could have reached out to the Shore Porters Society. They've hauled people's junk around the world since the time Columbus was making trips to America.

Guardian columnist Paul May professed his love for the Shore Porters in 2004:

The company was about 100 years too late to make it into Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, but The Shore Porter's Tale has a ring to it ...

What I love most about the Shore Porters Society is that they haven't made any attempt to update their brand since they dropped Middle Scots. They're not suddenly going to call themselves "Porta" or lose the simple block lettering. They're just going to keep on trucking for the next 500-odd years.

So if you ever go off to find the New World, talk to the Shore Porters.

Founded 1526 — Beretta in Gardone, Italy

If you've shot a gun in the past half-millennium or so, there's a chance it came from the barrel of a Beretta. The arms company got its start when the Arsenal of Venice needed 185 barrels for the arquebus, a gentlemanly ol' hand cannon.

A few factors have been in the world's oldest gun manufacturer's favor: Its hometown is nestled among iron-rich mountains, and the company has been family-run all 400+ years.

Founded 1534 — Cambridge University Press in Cambridge, England

The CUP is the world's oldest publishing house, working out of the ridiculously prestigious university that bears its name. None other than Henry the VIII gave the press permission to print "all manner of books."

A few of the Press's greatest hits

Producing widely read and cited books seems to be a sound strategy.

Founded 1570 — Whitechapel Bell Foundry in London, England

The Whitechapel Bell Foundry has been making the world's finest bells for a while now.

"Whitechapel Bell Foundry's long history spans the reigns of 27 English monarchs," the company says, "and among the royal visitors to the foundry were King George V and Queen Mary who came to witness the casting of two bells for Westminster Abbey."

Of course, the city of Philadelphia may have a few complaints about durability, as the Foundry made the Liberty Bell, which famously cracked when rang.

Founded 1608 — Bushmills in County Antrim, Northern Ireland

Bushmills lays claim to being the oldest whiskey distillery on the planet. King James I — he with the Bible that bears his name — gave a certain Sir Thomas Philip the ability to distill whiskey in the April 20, 1608, according to the company

The company has remained relevant all the while, with James Joyce giving a nod to Bushmills in his epic "Ulysses":

He never forgot himself when I was there sending me out of the room on some blind excuse paying his compliments to Bushmills whisky talking of course but hed do the same to the next woman that came along I suppose he died of galloping drink ages ago.

Founded 1623 — Zildjian in Istanbul, Turkey

One of America's oldest companies started in the Ottoman Empire: Zildjian, the world's leader in cymbals, was founded by Avedis Zildjian in Istanbul before his family brought the percussionist company to the States.

And it's got star power. Some of the best drummers in history have crashed Zildjian cymbals, including Ringo Star of the Beatles, Neil Pert of Rush, and Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones.

Plus, the company has become a part of American identity: The US government granted the manufacturer permission to buy copper during the resource-starved period of World War II.

Founded 1637 — Gekkeikan sake in Kyoto, Japan

Holding about 25% of the U.S. sake market, Gekkeikan is one of the most famous sake producers on earth.

The 370-year-old secret is the neighborhood of Kyoto that Gekkeikan lives in, called Fushimi. The Kyoto Project explains:

Fushimi is an ideal place for sake brewing because of its natural environment. Appropriate temperatures and good-quality water are required to brew sake. In Fushimi, both of these important factors exist.

The city of Kyoto is set in a basin, surrounded by mountains on the north, east, and west. These mountains keep Kyoto very chilly in wintertime. A cool temperature of around 5℃ is important to mature sake in a brewery. So cold winter temperatures created by Kyoto's natural basin is why sake brewing became so deeply rooted here.

To learn (and taste) firsthand, visit the Gekkeikan Sake Museum the next time you're in Kyoto.

Founded 1638 — Shirley Plantation in Charles City, Virginia

America's oldest family-owned business is the Shirley Plantation on the James River in Virginia. According to the Plantation's self-described history, it has "survived Indian uprisings, Bacon's Rebellion, the American Revolution, the American Civil War, and the Great Depression."

The family moved here only six years after the first permanent English settlement at Jamestown, and the 11 generations that have operated the plantation. Records indicate that the plantation had indentured servants, and later enslaved people, from 1616 until 1865, when 13th Amendment abolished slavery.

Founded 1653 — Royal Delft earthenware in Delft, the Netherlands

The fanciest pottery on the planet comes from a single earthenware factory in the fairy-tale town of Delft, Holland. The style is so intertwined with the city that you call it Delftware, and the only company with a seal approval from the Dutch Royal Family is Royal Delft.

The elegant blue-and-white vases, pots, and bowls are a part of Dutch identity.

CEO Henk Schouten told CNN that commitment is at the core of the company's long-running success.

"We just want to produce high-level products," Schouten said, "because there are many other factories who produce the mass products ... that kind of product you can buy it very cheap in all kinds of shops. When you see a product here hand-painted then I think three quarters of the price is craftsmanship and only a quarter of the price is the cost price of all kinds of material."

Founded 1706 — Twinings Tea in London, England

Imagining Britain without Twinings Tea is like imaging America without Coca-Cola: absent of its innermost consumer experience.

Founder Thomas Twining made bank on his intermingling with British cultural identity. According to reports, his Gunpowder Green Tea was selling for the equivalent of $260 per 100 grams back in the 18th century.

Twinings has longevity in more than one way: The company has been located at the same London address since it opened in 1706, and it has the oldest corporate logo still in use.

"Twinings' logo is a simple, classy, and timeless serif font," writes design blogger Tina Mailhot-Roberge. "Although it is not particularly dynamic, it matches its industry, product, and communicates its historical background with success."

Founded 1744 — Sotheby's in London, England

English bookseller Samuel Baker changed the world when he held an auction of books in 1744. That was the beginning of Sotheby's, a name now synonymous with high-brow spending.

A key to Sotheby's success is its ability to stay ahead of the trends in where the wealthy wanted to spend: coins, high-brow art, and real estate, among a few.

12 simple sketches that perfectly illustrate the path to wealth and financial happiness

FILE- In this Nov. 15, 2017, file photo, new $1 bills with the signatures of U.S. Treasurer Jovita Carranza and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin are cut and stacked at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington. Last year’s scary tumble for the stock market wasn’t enough to scare workers off of saving for retirement. Instead, many ended up saving more. During the first quarter of this year, the average worker set aside a record $2,370, according to Fidelity Investments. Including employer contributions, workers saved an average of 13.5% of their pay during the first three months of 2019. That’s the closest they’ve ever come to Fidelity’s recommendation of 15%. • Through 12 simple sketches, The New York Times' Carl Richards illustrates what we should do with our money versus what we actually do.
  • Richards highlights how improving your behaviors can help you reach your financial goals.
  • When making an investment, having the right attitude can be more important than timing the market, according to Richards.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

The New York Times columnist, author, and financial planner Carl Richards has made a career out of exposing and analyzing what he calls the "behavior gap" — the gap between what you should do with your money and what you actually do.

He also has an active Twitter presence, where he doles out nuggets of financial advice.

Richards boiled down his wisdom on wealth and happiness in a dozen sketches that he gave away to his readers during the "12 Days Of Behavior Gap," and which anyone can receive by signing up for his newsletter. We've shared them here with his permission.

An earlier version of this post appeared on Business Insider in December 2014.

There are a limited number of things you can control, Richards says, and you don't have power over everything that matters. It's the important things you can control that should occupy your efforts.

It's your adviser's job to help figure out where that sweet spot is. "A real advisor should be the thing between YOU and the BIG MISTAKE," Richards tweeted along with this sketch.

"Even after you figure out the math around a decision, you have to navigate the emotional complexity that comes with money," Richards writes on his website. The best financial moves are usually very simple.

And the way our financial system works, even if you're making great decisions, you still may not see the returns you expect.

No matter how complicated investing may get, some things (like behavior) matter more than others (timing the market).

Your portfolio design is one of the things that matter. "A well-designed portfolio can be the difference between good investment outcomes and disappointment," Richards wrote in The Times in 2013. The elements, like those shown below, should create one cohesive unit.

For instance, proper diversification of assets isn't just about having multiple types of one investment — it's about making sure your investments are significantly different from one another.

And it's OK that the path between you and your financial goals isn't a straight line.

As long as you stay focused on achieving your own financial goals instead of being sidetracked by what other people most value, you'll get there.

Rather than falling into the typical market cycle ...

... keep repeating what works.

One thing that works is having the right attitude. Here, Richards captures the feeling of gratitude for the people in your life who make you not only wealthy but happy.

We asked 5 women of different shapes and sizes to try bathing suits from Swimsuits for All — here's how they reacted to the fits and styles

swimsuits for all 4

  • Finding a stylish swimsuit that also fits well and makes you feel comfortable can be a difficult experience. It's even more frustrating for women who wear sizes outside of "standard" ranges offered by traditional retailers.
  • Swimwear company Swimsuits for All sells suits in sizes 4 through 40, treating often-ignored body sizes and shapes as priorities.
  • We asked five women who wear sizes 8 through 20 to try swimsuits from the brand. Ultimately, we had no trouble picking out styles we liked and loved the look and fit of the suits.

Shopping for swimsuits can be a stressful, vulnerable, and frustrating experience. It's doubly so when your favorite store doesn't carry a cute style in your size, or when all the ones in your size were clearly treated as an afterthought.

Swimsuits for All makes stylish, size-inclusive women's swimwear a priority by offering swimsuits in sizes 4 through 40.

While newer brands like Universal Standard are part of a more recent movement to make size-inclusive fashion the new normal, Swimsuits for All has been around since 2005, an early player that pushed and continues to push the boundaries of style and size in women's swimwear.

It challenges expectations of how swimsuits are made and marketed. The models Swimsuits for All use inspire us to embrace the bodies we have rather than strive to me something we're not — with swimsuits that flatter our shapes and make us feel comfortable in our own skin.

Among its many original styles, it also collaborates with well-known plus sized, body positivity advocates like model Ashley Graham and fashion blogger GabiFresh on special collections and campaigns.

It offers free returns within 60 days (along with a prepaid return label) and exchanges with free two-way shipping.

A cut-out one piece

Ashley Graham Boss Black Cut Out Underwire One Piece, $64

Pros: I like that this was a twist on the classic black swimming suit — it looked anything but basic. The fit was perfect but I did read the other reviews from the website and knew that I should size down.

What I liked about the Swimsuits for All website is that there were a lot of reviews and feedback from other plus-size people. The greatest concern from shopping for a swimsuit online is fit and it's even worse for plus-size people. It's nice to have advice and reviews from other real women who have bought and tried the swimming suit.

Cons: The three other swimming suits that I originally liked were sold out in my size, which was a bummer. —Shirley Cheng, INSIDER producer

A flattering, nautical one piece

Ashley Graham Hotshot Striped Ribbed One Piece, $96

I always want to buy one-piece suits like this, but I've been worried that they wouldn't have enough support in the chest since I have DDs. I knew if anyone was going to get it right, it'd be Swimsuits for All, and I'm happy to report that they did! The suit has built-in cup support, and though it's definitely not going to hold the girls up the same way a top with an underwire would, it at least provides enough to keep the girls in place. —Sally Kaplan, Insider Picks editor

A striped retro number with great online reviews

GabiFresh Blondie Tie Front High Waist Underwire Bikini, $68

As a plus-size woman, shopping for swimsuits always gives me a little bit of anxiety, so it was really nice to be able to look online. I was really surprised by how many different suits I actually wanted to buy — Swimsuits for All offered a lot of different styles that were all super cute and on-trend. When my selection came in the mail, I was really excited to try it on and I found that it fit perfectly. I couldn't wait to get out to the beach and show it off! —Hattie Weber, Insider Studios associate editor

A casual tie front bikini

Idol Periwinkle Ribbed Tie Front Underwire Bikini, $60

Style, texture, and fit — this suit fires on all engines. I love the combination of the tie-front tank style with the ribbed fabric, which was on the thicker side and far from the cliche of a flimsy bikini. Accordingly, I felt totally comfortable splashing into the ocean or jumping around in the sand. Though I don't have a large chest, the underwire bra also helped me feel more supported and secure.

The color is a gorgeous blue that'll match clear summer skies well, while the double-strapped back makes the suit look even more interesting. It's fun having a range of swimsuit styles and colors to wear throughout the summer, but this one's definitely a favorite. —Connie Chen, Insider Picks reporter

A classic black halter bikini

Diva Black Halter Bikini with Foldover Brief, $47.25

Being a different size on top and bottom has always made it difficult for me to buy swimsuits. The top (size 20) fit great and it even surpassed the beach test and there was no swimsuit malfunctions! The bottom (size 14) is high waisted and fit right. It has a cute fold on top that made it look special and not as plain as a completely solid swimsuit bottom. 11 tips and tricks for finding the perfect vacation spot and avoiding bad rental homes on Airbnb

Airbnb Louvre

  • Airbnb is one of the most popular ways to see the world, but there are lots of details to consider before booking with the site.
  • These tips can help you avoid a mediocre experience with Airbnb so you can achieve true vacation nirvana.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

I use Airbnb all the time when I travel or go on vacation.

Hotel rooms can be convenient and reliable, but I often find that booking a vacation home through Airbnb is cheaper, offers you more space, and is a little more fun to boot. You often get a better feel for the local flavor by choosing to live in a home in the area, rather than a standardized hotel room.

I just got back from my honeymoon in May: We were gone for two weeks, visited four different cities in Europe, and stayed in accommodations exclusively through Airbnb.

Some of the Airbnbs were better than anything we could've gotten in a hotel; others fell short of our expectations. But there was a lot that I learned through this experience and others. Here are my 11 top tips and tricks for using Airbnb.

SEE ALSO: The Reddit starter pack: These are the 41 best subreddits everyone should follow

1. Book in advance.

Booking earlier means you'll have more options in any location you choose to visit, and prices are usually lower than when you book closer to the date. This is especially true of popular cities and locations.

When my wife and I booked our trip to Venice as part of our honeymoon, for instance, we were looking at significantly more expensive options because we only booked about a month in advance. (Thankfully, we found a cheaper option, which leads me to my next tip.)

2. Sometimes, it's worth taking a chance on a newbie.

People like booking places that have been heavily reviewed by other people. It means that other people came to this Airbnb and didn't die, which is a good thing!

Still, you might be surprised if you ignore the number of reviews attached to any given listing, and take a chance on a newbie based on their photos and listed accommodations.

Back to my Venice story: Since we were only booking a month in advance, we felt like we were only seeing expensive options. But we kept looking and found a brand-new apartment that no one had stayed in yet. The photos looked beautiful, and we would get 20% off for being one of the first to book, so we took a leap of faith.

It ended up being a great decision: This apartment was easily the best one we stayed in during our whole honeymoon.

3. The term "Superhost" can be deceiving, and doesn't guarantee a quality experience.

Airbnb picks "Superhosts" based on just four criteria: They need to have had at least 10 people stay in their place over the past year, they need a 4.8 rating or higher from at least 50% of the people who stay in their place, they need zero cancellations over the last year, and they need to respond to 90% of new messages within 24 hours.

In other words, being a Superhost doesn't speak to the quality of the apartment.

We stayed in Modena, Italy, as part of our honeymoon, and chose to stay with a "Superhost." Our Modena apartment was easily our least favorite accommodation: It was more flights of stairs than advertised, the apartment wasn't very clean, had no soap, shampoo, or cleaning tools like paper towels, and the apartment smelled like sulfur at times (more on that later).

4. Study a listing's photos carefully.

When picking an Airbnb, it's really important to pay close attention to the photos. Sometimes you'll notice inconsistencies, or the same piece of furniture in two different photos — this may mean that the owner is taking different angles of their space to make it appear bigger.

On more than one occasion, we found we were looking at a studio listing by noticing the photos of the kitchen and bedroom occupied the same area.

Also, be sure to note the decor, and whether or not it gets sunlight. These things may affect you more than you'd think during your vacation.

5. Pick a place that's close to attractions, or places you plan on frequenting during your trip.

Cities can be deceivingly large. Paris, for instance, is way bigger than you think!

If you know you want to see certain sights in a city, or be close to major shopping or restaurant centers, try to look for an Airbnb that will be close by. Remember: You want to spend less time traveling to your various destinations, and more time enjoying them.

6. Airbnb will recommend listings for you, but they won't always be relevant.

When we were looking at places to stay in Venice, much of what Airbnb recommended was actually off the main island upon closer inspection. '

We're so glad we didn't go with what Airbnb recommended, because staying within Venice was a big part why our experience was so magical.

The same thing happened when we looked at Paris listings: Much of what Airbnb recommended was on the fringes of the city, and at least an hour of walking away from the big attractions.

7. If things aren’t clear on the listing, just ask the owner a question by sending them a message through Airbnb. They’ll almost always pre-approve you, giving you a few days to decide before you need to book.

Before booking accommodations for our honeymoon, we asked apartment owners about elevators, flights of stairs, and air conditioning. Owners got back to us pretty quickly, and pre-approved us so we didn't have to rush into a decision.

8. If the check-out time isn’t ideal, you can usually ask the host if they’ll accommodate.

We had to catch trains and flights at various times during our honeymoon, but we didn't want to be stuck wandering the city for hours with all our luggage. So we asked our hosts if we could move the check-out times to accommodate for our travel arrangements — sometimes by just an hour, or even a few — and every single one of our hosts was happy to work with us in advance.

This won't be the same for every host, but it doesn't hurt to ask, especially if it makes you trip a little more convenient.

9. When searching for apartments, be sure to "favorite" your top listings.

After you've favorited your top listings, you can go back and Airbnb will show all of your favorites on a map. This way, you can compare the locations of your favorite apartments with the locations of your top attractions.

My wife and I created a separate Google Map for the attractions we wanted to see in each city during our honeymoon, and compared that map to our Airbnb map of our favorite listings to help us choose where we'd stay.

10. Toiletries vary wildly from one place to another.

Some Airbnbs will have so much soap and shampoo, you'll feel like you're at a spa. Others, not so much.

Sometimes a place won't have paper towels, or even the basics of cooking, despite having a kitchen. One place didn't have salt, for instance, or oil or vinegar to cook with.

You can ask hosts about this sort of stuff before you book, but a lot of places will remember to include these essentials. I'd recommend noting what the apartment is missing when you arrive, so you can either inform the owner in that moment, or after your Airbnb experience when it comes time to leave them a review. (You can also send the owner a private message after your stay with tips on what could be improved so you don't have to shame them publicly.)

11. Smell is really important! When reading through reviews on a listing, be on the lookout for stink warnings.

Over our honeymoon, two of the four Airbnbs we stayed in (50%!) had a foul odor to them for at least part of the time we were there.

In Modena, Italy, we noticed a foul garbage-like smell that would occasionally waft through the apartment. We re-checked the reviews on that Airbnb listing, and found that a handful of older reviews noted this bad smell caused by the sewage outside. We simply weren't thinking about the apartment's smell while reading reviews, and missed these people's warnings.

Another apartment we stayed in had a bathroom that was recently renovated, and smelled like sulfur at night, or when it was raining. The owner chalked it up to the tide outside, but it was pretty unpleasant to constantly deal with.

Did you learn any valuable lessons after staying at an Airbnb?

How to change your Twitter username on a computer or mobile device

FILE PHOTO: A 3D-printed logo for Twitter is seen in this picture illustration made in Zenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina on January 26, 2016. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo

  • Unlike some other popular social media platforms, Twitter allows you to change your username as often as you like, and the process only takes a few seconds.
  • Your Twitter username, or "handle," does not have to be a version of your real name, so you can use any playful, ironic, or anonymous handle you would like.
  • Changing your Twitter username does not change your display name, so you can remain easily identifiable to followers even after your username is changed.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Facebook only allows you to change your username once every few months, and the name you choose must be at least a reflection of your real legal name, though common sobriquets are acceptable.

Twitter, on the other hand, has no such limitations in place when it comes to usernames.

You can change your Twitter username daily if you so choose, and it can be anything you want, from a take on your own real name to an ironic play on a celebrity to a collection of random numbers and letters.

Changing your Twitter name can allow you to become more anonymous online, to choose a title that will be more readily found in searches, or simply to reflect your current mood.

And as changing a Twitter username takes about a minute and most, there's no reason not to change it from time to time. Just note that changing your username will not change your display name, which is the name that displays under your profile picture on your home Twitter page and beside your avatar on your Tweets. (Changing that name, which is not as useful for search, both within Twitter and via search engines generally, is also quite easy, though it's a story for another day.)

Note, however, that if you have a verified Twitter account, changing your Twitter username will result in the loss of your verification badge at your current handle.

How to change your Twitter username

1. Log into your Twitter account.

2. Click on your Twitter avatar at the top right corner of your computer (top left for mobile), then hit "Settings and privacy" on the menu that pops up.

Screen Shot 2019 07 22 at 9.58.06 AM (1)

3. In the box by the word "Username," simply type in the new username you'd like to use. If available, green lettering will appear reading "Available."

Screen Shot 2019 07 22 at 10.01.50 AM (1)

4. Click the "Save" box at the bottom of the screen.

Screen Shot 2019 07 22 at 10.02.06 AM (1)

And that's that.

This tactic brings in 100% of new clients for many freelancers and entrepreneurs

0
0

Lindsay Stead

  • Landing new clients is one of the biggest challenges that freelancers face.
  • In a poll of 100 freelancers in various industries about how they garner new business, the most popular self-promotion strategy was the use of Facebook Groups.
  • What follows is a primer on how to use Facebook Groups effectively, including some important guidelines.
  • For example, it's crucial to make an active contribution to the group — without appearing self-serving and like you're only interested in finding job opportunities.
  • The more assistance you give to others, the more goodwill can build up over time to result in referrals from people on the platform.
  • Click here for more BI Prime stories.

Finding and landing clients is one of the biggest challenges that freelancers and other solopreneurs face. A 2018 study on Freelancing in America from Upwork reports that nearly two-thirds (63 percent) of full-time freelancers feel anxious because their gig work is unpredictable — and not knowing when and where to identify your next paying customer certainly plays its part.

To help ease the stress that many self-employed professionals feel about how to effectively bring in new clients, Business Insider conducted an informal poll of nearly 100 freelancers in various industries to see what cost-effective marketing and self-promotion tactics work best for them when it comes to connecting with new business opportunities. One strategy stood out from the rest as being responsible for luring all or nearly all of their clients: Facebook Groups.

Facebook describes these groups as "the place for small group communication and for people to share their common interests and express their opinion." This sounds great, but how exactly can freelancers use Facebook Groups to find and land clients? Consider the ideas below from entrepreneurs who are leveraging this unique tool with amazing results:

Go where your clients are

With countless possible Facebook Groups to join on every possible topic, it's important to be strategic about which ones you engage with. By selecting groups that match the interests and goals of your freelance business and/or joining groups that your target clients might frequent, you're instantly connected to an existing pool of people who may be interested in your services.

"Not everybody's Facebook group is going to be your Facebook group," said Lindsay Stead, owner and CEO of Gilded Blooms Communications. "Shop around and see what's out there and which groups align with your business and your personality." To that end, Stead advises that freelancers approach finding their ideal Facebook Group the same way they would build a recipe: begin by compiling the key ingredients that you need in a potential client — for example by niche, gender, specific industry, etc. "Essentially, look at your ideal client avatars and find out where they hang out, and then go there," she says.

Give, don't just take

Once you've found your group and familiarized yourself with it, Stead emphasizes the importance of making an active contribution rather than just being a passive scroller. It's also important to avoid appearing self-serving and like you're only interested in finding job opportunities. "Introduce yourself in the group, be sure to post, and reply to posts that aren't always somebody looking to hire someone," said Stead. "Start building natural connections and conversations, and everything else will follow. It won't be overnight, or even necessarily next week, but just keep showing up and giving value freely, and things will progress."

Francesca Baker, a freelance writer and marketer based in the UK, agrees that while there are many helpful Facebook Groups that are full of opportunities, the tool won't be as effective if you're focused only on the goal of finding clients. "The secret to success is just to be supportive and active in the groups, making sure that you give rather than just take," said Baker. "By getting advice from fellow experts, you improve your own game and thus become better at your job, which in the long term will help you with your clients."

Make pitch posts catchy

When Raj Vardhman of 99Firms quit his 9-to-5 job in the digital marketing industry to become a freelancer, he used specialized Facebook Groups as one of the key ways he searched for work, along with cold email pitching and Upwork. "I would simply find a local business, make an effort to show them how they can promote their business, and give them a quote that was significantly lower than what agencies would offer them," explained Vardhman. This trio of tactics proved successful, and he eventually opened his own business, managing a team of freelancers.

But to get there, Vardhman was intentional about the method he used when posting to Facebook Groups — especially when it came time to talk about his services. "Those posts should be catchy, humorous, and very professional at the same time," said Vardhman. "The catchy part is important to attract the attention of those who might need freelancers and to push your post to the feed, given many freelancers tend to like original public pitches." He added that you shouldn't need to use "in your face" marketing tactics to gain new customers with this tool, since there's already significant demand for talent on the site.

Drew DuBoff

Position yourself as an expert

Beyond any specific pitch posts that you might share in Facebook Groups, part of offering value that goes beyond self-promotion involves sharing expertise in your area of focus. Freelancer Drew DuBoff, a growth strategist and outsourcing expert, believes that this type of positioning is the secret to client acquisition. "Your comments and posts should accurately reflect your knowledge and the service that you offer," said DuBoff. "For example, if someone is asking about how to hire a virtual assistant (VA), then that would be a great opportunity to mention how you're a VA and what the process can be like for you on the other side of the hiring process. You can also mention that you're happy to find out more about what they need help with."

Dan Fradenburgh— who transitioned from a full-time job, to freelancing, to ultimately launching the freelance agency FunnelFixing.com where he now serves as CEO — explained that contributing your expertise regularly to Facebook Groups can pay off in helping to grow your reputation as a leading source of knowledge in your industry. "Each group has a few members who frequently comment and become 'Internet famous' within the group because of it," said Fradenburgh. "It's simple to become one of them, and that recognition increases the perceived value of your business or service."

Build relationships, get tagged

It can be a drag to constantly be on the lookout for opportunities to insert your pitch and sell your services — so the more help you can get from others with these efforts, the better. Steve Morgan, freelance SEO consultant at Morgan Online Marketing, points out that the assistance you give to others on Facebook Groups can build up over time to result in referrals from people on the platform.

"I'm getting to the point where I've helped people so much over the months and years that when there's a direct request for what I do — for example, 'Can anyone recommend an SEO person?' — I often get name-dropped and tagged in the post," said Morgan. He noted that this method can quickly grow legs and end up in multiple client contacts without lifting a finger, since once someone tags you, others in the group might end up seeing it too. "I've had inquiries from people who have said, 'I saw that you were recommended in that person's thread on the Facebook Group,'" shared Morgan. "It's so much stronger to be referred and recommended by others than for me to simply nominate myself."

How to turn off the Find My iPhone feature on your iPhone

0
0

find my iphone app

  • You can turn off the Find My iPhone feature on your iPhone from the phone's Settings or Find My iPhone apps, or via iCloud's website.
  • You should generally leave Find My iPhone turned on unless you really need to disable it; when turned on, you can see where your phone is up to within a few yards of its location.
  • There are times when you may need to turn off Find My iPhone– such as when you are restoring the device to factory settings, getting it serviced at the store, or when you give it away to someone else.

Since our entire lives are contained within our phones – messages, banking, passwords, and so much more – losing your iPhone can be nothing short of catastrophic. That's why it's reassuring that you can track down your phone's location via Apple's Find My iPhone feature. Just log in to any browser (or even use the app on another iOS device) to see where your device is located, accurate to within a few yards.

But you may not always want Find My iPhone to be turned on, and there are reasons beyond just "I am concerned about the risk of someone else tracking me."

If you need to perform a factory reset on your iPhone– to erase all the data and return it to its out-of-the-box condition – Apple requires that you turn off Find My iPhone. You'll also want to turn this feature off before you sell, donate, or otherwise give away your phone. And often, technicians at the Apple store will require you to turn this feature off for servicing.

In order to turn off Find My iPhone, you will need to know your Apple ID password – so no one else can do this without your knowledge (unless, of course, that person knows your password).

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

iPhone Xs (From $729 at Apple)

Why you should leave Find My iPhone turned on

Keep in mind that if you turn off Find My iPhone, you will, as the action suggests, no longer be able to locate your phone using the Find My iPhone app or website.

That means you can't see its location on a map or trigger your iPhone to play a sound so you can find it in the seat cushions. Nor can you erase it remotely if it is ever unfortunately stolen. That's why it's a good idea to always leave Find My iPhone enabled except for moments in time when you specifically need to turn it off.

After all, keep in mind that despite the ever-present concern about privacy, no one else should be able to track your iPhone without your Apple ID's username and password.

How to turn off Find My iPhone on an iPhone

1. Tap the Settings app.

2. Tap your name at the top of the screen.

3. Tap iCloud and then tap Find My iPhone.

find

4. Tap Find My iPhone to turn off this setting. You'll need to enter your Apple ID password.

How to turn off Find My iPhone if you no longer have the phone

What if you no longer own your phone? Perhaps you threw it away or lost it, but Find My iPhone is still turned on.

Like an electronic ghost, it'll appear in the Find My iPhone app unless you do something about it. If you want to reduce clutter and turn Find My iPhone off on this now-absent device via long distance, you can do that from the app or website.

1. Go to the Find My iPhone app on another device or iCloud's website.

2. Select the device you no longer own but want to turn off its Find My iPhone feature.

3. On the app, tap Actions.

4. Tap Erase iPhone. You'll need to enter your Apple ID password.

icloud

5. After it's erased, tap Remove Account. It'll disappear from the Find My iPhone display.

NOW WATCH: Jeff Bezos is worth over $160 billion — here's how the world's richest man makes and spends his money

CauseBox is a subscription service that sends boxes of responsibly sourced beauty products, accessories, and home decor — here's what it's like

CauseBox

  • CauseBox is a subscription box service that gets delivered on a seasonal basis.
  • Each box has six to eight products that can include jewelry, home decor, accessories, apparel, skin-care/beauty products, wellness products, and artwork.
  • Each item in the package is sourced from a socially conscious brand, and CauseBox partners with different charities to help them raise funds, expand their base, and tell their stories.
  • You can sign up for a customizable annual membership at $49.95 per box, or opt for the quarterly subscription at $54.95 per box.

Subscription services like BirchBox and Stitch Fix have gained a lot of attention over the last few years, spurring more and more brands to take the subscription route in order to provide unique experiences for their customers.

CauseBox is one such company capitalizing on the trend of sending clothing, beauty products, and home decor via subscription — but what sets it apart is that all the products inside its boxes are sourced from socially, economically, and environmentally conscious brands. To chose these brands, CauseBox's editorial team talks to the founders of companies doing social good and asks them about why they give back, who they are directly impacting, and where their products are made. An open line of communication between CauseBox and its partners ensure that the companies are following through with their missions and goals.

CEO Matt Richardson made giving back his ultimate vision for the company — and to complete that vision, CauseBox volunteers with and donates to with different charities to help them with their growth and impact. Past charities have included Speak Your Silence, which helps those affected by sexual abuse and assault to move forward. Others, like Trees for the Future work to end hunger and poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa through agricultural practices.

How does CauseBox work and what does it cost?

The bright, charming packages are created and sent on a seasonal schedule — spring, summer, fall, and winter. Like most subscription services, the boxes come in a convenient package and arrive at your door on a scheduled basis. I received the 2019 spring box, and had a really lovely experience with it — from the moment I got my box to the time I spent actually using the products inside.

CauseBox offers customers two subscription options: the quarterly subscription ($54.95 per box), and the annual subscription ($49.95 per box, a total of $199.8 per year)). After choosing your preferred method, you'll create an account online and begin your customization process.

Each seasonal box offers six to eight new products — each one from a socially conscious brand, and some even created exclusively for CauseBox customers. If you sign up for the annual subscription service, you can customize your product options based on pattern, color, or product type. The best part about the box is that it includes a little notebook in each package so you can read a story behind every product included.

Your CauseBox will ship within the first couple weeks of the seasonal months and it typically takes two to eight days to arrive. If you chose the custom CauseBox, you'll be able to tailor your delivery preferences.

What's inside a CauseBox?

The actual box is cute and colorful, but the reason CauseBox is so special is because of the items housed inside. Each box comes with up to eight products that are all cruelty free, sustainably sourced, and intended to serve, support, and empower disadvantaged communities. They all include some combination of jewelry, skin care/beauty products, accessories, home decor, wellness products, and even artwork.

My box contained items from every one of these categories — my favorite items were the Megan Portfolio Clutch from Glass Ladder Co. (valued at $120), and the Cosmedix Glow Bamboo Brightening Mask (valued at $54). I was also able to choose certain items like the Cleobella Silky Scarf and the Marina de Buchi Luxe Charm Bracelet, along with a few others (a perk of signing up for the annual membership).

Is CauseBox worth the cost?

The $50 pricetag per CauseBox isn't a hefty cost when you consider the value of the contents inside. Each box has an estimated value of over $200 — according to the website, my Spring 2019 products added up to $341.90.

There are definitely a couple items that I won't use all too often, so in my opinion, the value of the box isn't as high as estimated. But, the option to personalize my box made me enjoy the products inside even more.

Bottom line:

The convenience, overall cost, and quality of the products make the CauseBox a good investment, particularly if you're signing up as a way to treat yourself. I feel better about using the office items, accessories, home products, and skin care simply because they are all eco-friendly and sustainably sourced.
