Meet Bernard and Lisa Selz, the wealthy New York City couple who has donated millions to the anti-vax movement

Bernard Lisa Selz

New York City declared a public health crisis in April after a measles outbreak began in one Brooklyn neighborhood.

Two of the city's wealthy residents have played a significant role in funding the anti-vax movement: Bernard and Lisa Selz have given more than $3 million to organizations that question the safety of vaccines, a review of their tax returns by The Washington Post revealed. The couple's donations have been used to fund government lobbying by anti-vaccination activists and the controversial 2016 film "Vaxxed."

Keep reading to learn how Bernard and Lisa Selz have helped fund the anti-vax movement.

Multiple attempts to reach the Selzes for comment were not returned.

Bernard Selz (right), 79, is a graduate of Columbia University and the manager of Selz Capital, a hedge fund he founded in 2003.

Selz currently acts as Managing Member and Portfolio Manager at Selz Capital, according to Bloomberg.

According to The Washington Post, Lisa Selz, 68, held jobs at Manufacturers Hanover Trust and Tiffany and Co. before taking a role with the Selz Foundation in 1993.

The couple has two sons and lives on Manhattan's Upper East Side.

The Selzes are known philanthropists.

They've made donations to organizations that support the arts, education and environmental conservation through their personal foundation.

According to the NYU Institute for Studies of the Ancient Worlds' website, Bernard serves on several boards, including the World Monuments Fund and The Frick Collection.

Their foundation is called the Selz Foundation. It does not have a website that Business Insider was able to find.

But in 2012, The Washington Post reports, the Selz Foundation began to focus on anti-vaccine organizations, starting with a donation to Andrew Wakefield.

In 2012, the gave a $200,000 gift to a legal fund for anti-vax activist Andrew Wakefield. The reason for the foundation's shift is unknown.

As Business Insider's Erin Brodwin previously reported, Wakefield published a study linking the measles vaccine to autism in 1998. Wakefield was convicted of professional misconduct in 2010 and his license was revoked. The Lancet, the journal that published the study, retracted it twelve years after publishing it.

The Selzes later donated $1.6 million over several years to two organizations founded by Wakefield.

The money was used to help fund the 2016 film "Vaxxed," a controversial documentary that questions the safety of vaccines.

In March 2019, Amazon removed the film from its streaming service following public criticism.

Read more: Amazon just took down a controversial documentary that links vaccines to autism. Doctors have known for years that it relies on sham science.

One of the anti-vax organizations the Selzes support is the Informed Consent Action Network (ICAN), which was founded by Del Bigtree.

According to its website, the network aims to "[expose] shortcomings with our vaccine program."

The Selzes' gift of $1 million accounted for three-quarters of the group's $1.4 million budget, 2017 tax returns obtained by The Washington Post show. Lisa Selz also serves as ICAN's president.

Because of the Selz Foundation's support, ICAN founder Del Bigtree was able to travel the country hosting events and lobbying lawmakers to further the group's agenda.

Bigtree has hosted numerous events in Williamsburg, ground zero of New York City's measles outbreak.

In April, Business Insider reported that 285 cases of measles had been reported in Brooklyn. The outbreak began with the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community in Brooklyn's Williamsburg neighborhood, many of whom rejected the vaccine for religious reasons.

The outbreak is so severe that New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio declared the outbreak a public health crisis.

The city now requires all un-vaccinated persons to get a vaccine or pay a fine.

More cases of the measles have been reported in the United States in 2019 so far than in any other year in the past three decades. According to The New York Times, there have also been outbreaks in Isreal and Ukraine.

Rothy’s and Everlane both use recycled plastic to make comfortable women’s flats — here's how they compare in comfort, style, and price

0
0

Rothy's vs. Everlane 4x3

  • Rothy's and Everlane are two popular brands that offer knit flats.
  • They're both made from recycled plastic bottles and are comfortable, breathable, and stylish. But they differ in feel, color options, and price (Rothy's are $125-$145, while Everlane's are $98).
  • If you don't want to spend more than $100, are okay with fewer color options, and prefer a thicker, more structured feel, get a pair of Everlane Day Glove ReKnit flats.
  • If you like shopping many different colors and patterns, want a low-maintenance shoe you can easily wash, and are looking for more flexibility and give, get a pair of Rothy's flats.

Recently, online clothing retailer Everlane released a knit iteration of its popular Day Glove flat. The women on the Insider Picks team reacted accordingly: by exploding with excitement and immediately slipping on the stylish, lightweight shoes the moment we received the boxes.

Although brands like Everlane and Allbirds have all realized by now that a lot of women love wearing flats, the original startup that made a name of its flats is, of course, Rothy's

With its sleek silhouettes and distinctive blue trim, Rothy's can be seen in cities all over the country, from the hills of San Francisco to the subway cars of New York City. As you consider a new pair of flats to replace your scuffed up, worn down pair, it's probably top of mind in your list of options. However, newcomers like Everlane also look pretty enticing.

If you're stuck between Rothy's and Everlane, we've broken them down by a few factors (color and style options, fabric construction, feel, and price) so you can determine which one is best for your use and budget.

Our team really likes both, so we can't give a conclusive answer on which is better — it all depends on your specific preferences. For a few more women's flats options to consider, check out our guide to the best flats you can buy.

Read our full review of Rothy's flats here.

Read our full review of the Everlane Day Glove ReKnit flats here.

Read on for a direct comparison between Rothy's and Everlane flats, below.

What they're made of

What's really cool about both of these flats is that they're made from recycled plastic bottles. Using these unexpected materials has resulted in surprisingly flexible and comfortable shoes that you would never guess contained recycled materials.

Rothy's

The knit upper of Rothy's flats is made from recycled plastic bottles specifically, though the company doesn't specify how many. The outsole is made from carbon-free rubber, while the insole is made from caster oil and recycled materials. Converting recycled bottles into something beautiful has been Rothy's intent from its inception in 2016. As of June 2019, it has repurposed more than 32 million bottles.

Everlane

The knit upper and outsole of the Everlane Day Glove ReKnit flats are made from eight recycled plastic bottles, while the insole is made from Italian leather. Everlane has committed to eliminating new plastic from its supply chain by 2021. In late 2018, it kicked off this initiative with its ReNew collection of outerwear and in 2019 it launched a sustainable leather sneaker brand called Tread, proving that every part of your wardrobe can be responsibly made.

What it's like to wear and maintain them

How different can two knit flats be? There actually is a distinct difference between the feel, as well as the maintenance, of Everlane's and Rothy's flats.

Rothy's

Rothy's knit material is thinner and slightly tighter-woven, and the 3D printing process that produces it results in a less noticeable pattern. Rothy's round-toe flats have some more give and flexibility, so they could be ideal for wide feet. The pointy-toe version is best for narrow feet. Since the insole is also made from recycled materials rather than something like leather, it feels drier and slightly more breathable, and it won't stick to the bottom of your feet. If you tend to have sweaty feet, Rothy's might be better for you. They're easy to clean — just take out the insoles to hand-wash and throw the shoes themselves in the cold wash cycle of your washing machine.

Everlane

The Everlane Day Glove ReKnit knit material is thicker and fashioned into a rib pattern. The flat also has a thicker, more defined "collar" that hugs onto your foot. The cushioned leather insole is buttery soft, smooth, and flexible, providing all-day comfort reminiscent of the original Day Glove. Together, these components make a lightweight, breathable shoe that you can wear straight out of the box. Due to the leather detailing on this shoe, you can only spot clean it.

What silhouettes and styles each brand offers

Rothy's

Rothy's flats come in two styles. The Flat has a rounded toe and angular opening, while The Point has a pointed toe and an angular opening. Compared to Everlane, Rothy's has many more color and print options, like this leopard print. However, it regularly "retires" colors and prints and introduces new or limited-edition ones, so if you see a style you like, it's better to buy it sooner than later.

Everlane

The Everlane Day Glove ReKnit flats are pretty new, so there are currently only five colors available: black, white, pink, red, and yellow. As a basics brand, Everlane doesn't really do prints, but as it expands its color offerings, you can expect more solid color options. There is one silhouette, which has a rounded toe and rounded opening.

How much you'll pay for them

Based on shoe budget alone, you might have an immediate preference for one brand over the other.

Rothy'sflats are more expensive. The rounded toe flats cost $125 and the pointed toe flats cost $145.

Everlane's Day Glove ReKnit costs $98.

Which flats you should ultimately buy

We own, regularly wear, and love both brand's flats, but the bottom line is this:

If you like shopping many different colors and patterns, want a low-maintenance shoe you can easily wash, and desire more flexibility and give, get a pair of Rothy's flats.

If you don't want to spend more than $100, are okay with basic colors, and prefer a thicker, more structured feel, get a pair of Everlane Day Glove ReKnit flats.

NYC rents just hit a 3-year high, and the city's prices are pushing everyone from millennials to wealthy Wall Street bankers away

new york city manhattan

  • The average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is the highest its been in at least three years, according to a report by Zumper.
  • On a national level, rent for a one-bedroom apartment increased by 0.1% to $1,216, and the two-bedroom rent increased by 0.5% to $1,471, according to the report.
  • San Francisco continues to lead with the highest average rent for both one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments.
  • New Yorkers are living in vans and boats to avoid rising housing costs in the city.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

In New York City, the temperature isn't the only thing rising in June.

The average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in the Big Apple is $2,980, up 4.6% from last month, according to a report by Zumper. That's the highest it's been in three years, marking a 4.2% increase from June 2018.

The wallet-tugging news doesn't end there. Two-bedroom apartments in New York City saw an even bigger increase, shooting up 5.1% from last month to an average price of $3,300.

Read more:Here's the salary you'll need if you want to afford a mortgage in 17 major US cities

Compare that to the national scale: The report shows that one-bedroom rents across the US increased by 0.1% to $1,216, and the two-bedroom rent increased by 0.5% to $1,471.

While the average rent in New York City has gone up, it still trails behind San Francisco's prices: The average rent for a one-bedroom apartment is $3,700, and $4,720 for a two-bedroom.

As Business Insider's Hillary Hoffower previously reported, the high cost of living in New York City is causing even the city's wealthiest to move out. Everyone from rich millennials to millionaire bankers are abandoning the area. In 2016, New York City lost $8.4 billion as a result of wealthy residents — mostly bankers — moving, according to the New York Post. And the pattern can be seen on a state-wide level, too: According to a SmartAsset study citing data from 2015-2016, New York is the No. 1 state rich millennials are moving away from. It saw 14,915 rich young residents move out during the one-year period.

And if residents aren't moving out, they are resorting to desperate measures to avoid the city's rising housing costs. Some are living in vans and houseboats instead of traditional homes in an attempt to save money.

Are you a New Yorker who's been priced out of the city or has found an alternative form of housing within the city? Email the reporter at lbrandt@businessinsider.com if you have a story to share.

Southwest launched a card for small business owners with an 80,000-point signup bonus — the airline's highest offer ever

Business Insider may receive a commission from The Points Guy Affiliate Network if you apply for a credit card, but our reporting and recommendations are always independent and objective.

southwest airlines

  • Southwest and Chase are introducing a new premium credit card for small businesses: the Southwest Rapid Rewards Performance Business Credit Card.
  • The card has the highest-ever points sign-up bonus on a Southwest card: 80,000 Rapid Rewards points when you spend $5,000 in the first three months.
  • While only "small businesses" can apply for the card, businesses are defined broadly, and include freelancers, sole proprietors, side gigs, and even people who resell items on eBay.

Southwest has announced a brand new premium credit card for small business owners. The card, the Southwest Rapid Rewards Performance Business Card, features a variety of new perks and points-earning benefits, and features the highest-ever points sign-up bonus on a Southwest credit card: 80,000 Rapid Rewards points when you spend $5,000 in the first three months.

The points earned from the sign-up bonus are more than two-thirds of the total points needed to earn Southwest's coveted Companion Pass.

Although Southwest and Chase jointly introduced a premium personal credit card last year, bringing the total number of personal cards in the portfolio up to three, there has only been one small business card available — the Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Business Credit Card.

Southwest loyalists should find the business card worth exploring for two reasons.

First, the definition of "business" is broad, and includes categories some people may not realize, such as freelancers, people with side gigs, or even people who resell items on eBay — even without a formal business structure in place, these users can apply with their name as the business name, and their Social Security number as the business identification number.

Second, Chase terms allow you to get the sign-up bonus on one personal card and one business card, meaning you can get both. The personal cards currently offer a sign-up bonus of 40,000 points when you spend $1,000 in the first three months. If you get the bonus from the Performance Business Card plus any personal card, you'll have enough points for Southwest's Companion Pass, which lets a designated friend or family member travel with them for free (minus any taxes), for a whole year.

To earn the Companion Pass, one has to earn 110,000 qualifying points with Southwest within a calendar year. The pass will then be valid for the remainder of that calendar year, as well as the entirety of the following one.

Points earned from a Southwest credit card count — including sign-up bonuses.

The Performance Business Card has an annual fee of $199, but offers a number of benefits to make up for that.

The card earns 3x points per dollar spent on Southwest flights and hotel or car rental partners, and 2x points on social media and search engine advertising, internet, cable, and phone services. It earns 1x point on everything else.

Cardholders will also get four upgraded boardings per year, 9,000 anniversary points each year when the card renews (that alone is worth about $135, based on The Points Guy's subjective valuations), in-flight Wi-Fi credits, and up to $100 in credits for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck.

Ultimately, the new Performance card offers an excellent ongoing value, but the sign-up bonus makes it a no-brainer for Southwest loyalists who qualify. It's unclear whether the bonus will remain permanently, or if it's only available for a limited time, so interested users should consider applying on the sooner side.

The best pillow overall

The Premium Adjustable Shredded Memory Foam Pillow from Coop Home Goods will have you sleeping like a baby with its perfect support and variable firmness.

"Ahhh." That's the sigh of contentment you'll utter as your weary head meets the Coop Home Goods Premium Adjustable Memory Foam Pillow. It's the third best-selling pillow on Amazon, and it's filled with shredded memory foam. You'll get the support and comfortable "sinking in" sensation of a traditional memory foam pillow, but none of the excessive heat or firmness that can be a problem with solid foam.

What makes the Coop Home Goods pillow particularly wonderful is that it's adjustable. You can unzip the inner pillow cover to add or remove foam until the pillow is just the way you like it. It's also hypoallergenic and dust-mite resistant, so you won't wake up sniffly or congested. When it's time to clean the pillow, no problem — Just toss it in your washing machine and dryer. We recommend that you add another pillow or a blanket to balance the load, along with a couple of clean tennis balls to help fluff up the foam.

Coop Home Goods' proprietary shredded memory foam is CertiPUR-US certified, meaning it's guaranteed to be free of chemicals and toxins you really don't want to sleep with, such as formaldehyde, lead, mercury, ozone depleters, PBDEs, phthalates, and TCEP flame retardants. Manufactured in California, the pillow has a 30-day guarantee, so if you don't love it, you can return it with no questions asked.

As one of the highest-rated memory foam pillow on Amazon, 82% of the more than 16,000 customers who left feedback, gave it 4 or 5 stars. Customers call this the best pillow they've ever owned, praise its breathability and adjustability, and love the way it supports their neck and head. As one customer writes, "It's like sleeping on an adjustable cloud." The most common negative comments concern the pillow's odor, which can be strong initially, but fades away within a day or two.

The Premium Adjustable Memory Foam Pillow has a polyester/bamboo cover that is cool and comfortable for sleep, and it's easily removed for washing. Inside, there's an interlock knit cover to contain the foam. Both covers have zippers so you can access the foam for easy adjustment.

Pros: Adjustable loft, very supportive and comfortable, not too hot

Cons: Some initial odor, you have to let it expand from vacuum-sealed packaging

Buy the Premium Adjustable Memory Foam Pillow from Coop Home Goods for $69.99 and up (price varies by size)

The best budget pillow

If you want excellent support and comfort at an equally great price, the two-set Le'vista Hotel Collection Pillow is what you've been dreaming of.

Just because a pillow is inexpensive doesn't mean it can't also be comfortable. The Le'vista Hotel Collection Pillow (formerly Smart Home Bedding Super Plush Pillow) definitely qualifies on both counts. The fill is a down alternative, meaning it has a similar feel to goose down, but it is made of a 50/50 cotton and polyester blend. While nothing perfectly matches the cloudlike feel of genuine down, this pillow comes pretty close.

The pillows are densely filled, so the support is fairly firm, yet with the soft give that is a hallmark of down. You'll also appreciate the fill's resistance to dust mites and other allergens. Even better for allergy sufferers, you can toss this pillow into the washing machine and dryer without any ill effects or loss of loft.

This is one of the top-selling pillows on Amazon. Out of the nearly 2,500 customer reviews, 73% are 4 or 5 stars. Many buyers commented about the fluffiness of the pillows and loved the way they hold their shape. Others remarked on the hypoallergenic features of the pillow, saying they aren't waking up with a stuffy nose since buying the pillow. Surprisingly for a synthetic fill pillow, many owners claim the pillow sleeps cool.

Nothing is perfect, however, not even the Le'vista Hotel Collection Pillow. A few customers complained the pillows flattened out sooner than they expected, and some people said they were too hard. The pillows are sold as a two-pack.

Pros: Inexpensive, good support, hypoallergenic

Cons: Flatten out, some feel they are too hard

The best hybrid pillow

The Leesa Hybrid Pillow combines the best of both worlds with a firm gel pillow base and a soft quilted top layer.

The Leesa Hybrid pillow is the perfect pillow for anyone who wants the firm support of a memory foam pillow and the soft cushy feel of a down pillow at the same time. The combination seems impossible, but Leesa has done it.

The Hybrid Pillow has a down-like quilted pocket layer on one side, a firmer, ventilated gel comfort layer on the other side, and a removable pillow insert between these two layers. The multi-layered approach makes this a very customizable pillow.

You can take the quilted pillowtop part off and use the firmer pillow base, you can flip it over and sleep on the cool gel side, or you can take the firm center out and just use the fluffy quilted top as your pillow.

I've been sleeping on this pillow for months now and I love it. The gel pillow base is firm enough to make me feel like I'm still sleeping on my memory foam pillow, but the soft, quilted down alternative topper makes it more comfortable to rest my head on the pillow at night. I'm a side sleeper, so I need support, but sometimes my very firm memory foam pillow can hurt my ears if I stay on one side for too long (the human head is heavy!)

I'm not the only person who loves this pillow, either. Several other Insider Picks staffers tried it and loved it. Nonbiased Reviews also recommends it highly.

The only real downside here is that this pillow is on the expensive side, at $100. However, given how versatile it is and the fact that it will last you for years, it's well worth the price. It's also not a huge risk because you can use it for 100 nights and if you decide you hate it, you can return it — no questions asked.

If you still have qualms, Leesa's philanthropy should assuage your concerns a bit. The pillow is part of Leesa's One-Ten Program, in which one pillow is donated for every 10 sold.

Pros: Firm pillow base, soft pillow top, adjustable design, cooling gel layer, 100 night trial

Cons: Expensive

The best down pillow

Down isn't just for the birds. The Royal Hotel Goose Down Pillow is so feathery-soft, you'll dream you're sleeping in the clouds.

Some inferior down pillows are really stuffed mostly with feathers. That means you run the risk of being poked by a stray quill. Plus, feathers are not as soft and fluffy as down. The Royal Hotel Goose Down Pillow is filled with 100% goose down, which is much fluffier than less desirable duck down, so you'll enjoy a luxuriously comfortable night of sleep.

Royal Hotel doesn't skimp on the down, either. With a 750 fill power and 35-ounce fill weight, you're getting lots of downy comfort in a very supportive pillow that isn't too soft and isn't too firm. Plus, the down is sanitized to remove allergens and bacteria, so you can enjoy the pillow even if you are usually allergic to feathers. The cover of the pillow is 100% cotton, with a 500-thread count, so it's soft and smooth, but strong enough to contain the down.

Amazon buyers love this pillow, with 79% of the more than 500 reviewers giving it 4 or 5 stars. Comments include, "These pillows are wonderfully full and hold their loft through the night," "The best pillows ever," and "Very nice pillows, well-filled and they do not collapse under the weight of your head." Many customers say that the pillows were firmer than they expected, which might be good or bad depending on your preference (Amazon sells this pillow in different firmness.)

Sleep Like the Dead also likes the Royal Hotel down pillows, reporting that 84% satisfaction rate among surveyed customers.

For down pillows, the price is actually quite reasonable, but Royal Hotel only sells the pillows by the pair, making it a more expensive purchase overall.

Pros: High quality down, firm, comfortable support

Cons: Only sold by the pair, may have a faint "feathery" smell at first

The best luxurious pillow

Saatva Dreams Pillow's layered construction allows for a supportive yet soft feel that will keep you sleeping comfortably through the night.

Saatva has taken the same layered concept that has worked so well in its luxury mattresses, and applied it to the Saatva Pillow from Saatva Dreams. If you're looking for a way to add some high-end comfort to your bed, adding a couple of these pillows to your collection of bedding is a worthwhile investment.

I experienced this comfort first-hand and was impressed with the head and neck support it offered. It reaches a perfect middle ground of feeling soft and plush while being just firm enough to keep its shape throughout the night. I never once woke up with a flattened pillow or sore neck.

The "Goldilocks effect" created by the Saatva Pillow is thanks to its three-layer construction. The core of the pillow consists of shredded Talalay latex, creating a foundation of support your head and neck will be grateful for. This core is surrounded by microdenier fiber — a down-like alternative that gives you the same feel of a down pillow with no feathers involved.

The breathable 100% organic cotton cover makes up the third layer, wicking away any moisture and helping you stay cool throughout the night. Put all three layers together and you have a pillow that both looks — and feels — like the type of pillow you'd find on the beds of a 5-star hotel. It comes in queen or king sizes too so you can find the perfect fit for you and your bed.

Back and side sleepers will likely be the most comfortable on the Saatva Pillow, while some stomach sleepers may find the loft too high to sleep comfortably. I typically sleep on my stomach and found that to be the case when in this position. However, when I slept on my back or side, I had no issues. My boyfriend sleeps almost exclusively on his back, and he felt that this pillow helped him sleep more soundly through the night. I also noticed less snoring, so it was a win-win for both of us. If you are a stomach sleeper but don't want to miss out on the luxury, the inner pillow or "core" can easily be removed, giving the pillow a slimmer profile that you may find better suited to your sleeping position. The cover itself can also be unzipped and removed for washing.

There is no skimping on quality here, and while the price does reflect that, the great nights of sleep I've had on this pillow justify the price. At the end of the day, you can't go wrong with investing in better quality sleep. Not only is it good for you, but those you interact with daily will also likely be grateful as well.

I wasn't the only one impressed with both the quality and the comfort of the Saatva pillow. One customer says, "After my great experience with my [Saatva] sheets, I purchased my Saatva Pillow. Even more amazing! You can literally see the quality when you look at it. My neck is supported yet comfortable at the same time." Sleepopolis also gave the Saatva Pillow a positive review, saying the "multilayered construction combines to offer a harmony of fluffy comfort and responsive support."— Kylie Joyner

Pros: Latex core and outer layer of microdenier fiber provide a supportive yet plush feel, removable cover for easy washing, keeps its shape throughout the night, core can be removed to adjust the loft

Cons: Expensive, some stomach sleepers may find the loft too high

The best buckwheat hull pillow

No matter how you like your pillow, the Zen Chi Buckwheat Hull Pillow delivers and it keeps you cool while you sleep.

I've been sleeping on the Zen Chi Buckwheat Hull Pillow for several years now. In fact, I've gone through two of them. I've tried a lot of pillows over the years — memory foam, shredded memory foam, latex, polyester, and several specialty fillings — but I have never stuck with any other type of pillow for as long as the buckwheat hulls.

I'm a restless sleeper and love the way I can squish the buckwheat hulls out flat to sleep comfortably on my stomach, and then bunch them up a few minutes later when I flip over to my side. Plus, as a "hot sleeper," this is the best fill I've found to avoid the dreaded sweaty head wake up.

Zen Chi uses 100% organically grown buckwheat to fill its pillows and 100% cotton for the case. There's a zipper, so you can actually adjust the fill of the pillow. Add more hulls for a firmer, loftier pillow, or remove some if you prefer a softer, flatter feel. And even if you leave the pillow as is, the beauty of a buckwheat hull pillow is its supreme adjustability. Because you can mold the pillow any way you like it, you can support your head, neck, and upper body for the most comfortable sleep.

Out of the more than 700 Amazon customer reviews for the queen size, 75% gave it 4 stars or more. Many buyers commented that it took a couple of nights to get used to the pillow's feel, but once they did, they loved the support and adjustability. Buckwheat hulls are definitely not soft, but thanks to the pillow's beanbag feel, they don't feel uncomfortably hard, either.

One customer writes, "I thought it might be too hard on my ears, but it's not. I finally wake up without a crick in my neck, which was the case with every other pillow I've ever owned." Many owners also praise the cooling factor.

On the downside, the slight crinkly sound of the shifting hulls bothered some owners. This has never been an issue for me, however. Other customers complain about the pillow's weight, and it is indeed very heavy. Still, the overall comfort outweighs the minor issues.

Pros: Stays cool, adjusts to any position, firm support

Cons: Heavy, noisy, some people find it too hard

The best contour pillow

If you often wake up with a stiff neck, sore back, or aching upper body, you'll appreciate the therapeutic shape of the Sleep Innovations Cool Contour Memory Foam Pillow.

Like all contour pillows, the Sleep Innovations Cool Contour Memory Foam Pillow has two gentle slopes — one slightly higher than the other, so you can choose the side that best fits your neck — with a shallow valley in the center for your head. Unlike most other contour pillows, this one has an upper layer of cooling open-cell memory foam over a core of denser, traditional memory foam for extra support. That means you won't wake up hot and sweaty, as is often a problem with regular memory foam pillows.

The firm, yet moldable support gently cradles your head and neck, relieving the pressure that often leads to aches and pains. The shape of the contour pillow fills in the gap between your neck and the mattress, keeping your spine in proper alignment while you snooze. That's why so many chiropractors recommend contour pillows to their patients.

In customer reviews, Amazon buyers say they didn't like the pillow the first few nights but came to appreciate its unique shape and firm memory foam support over time. Others remark that it took a couple of nights to determine which of the two outer curves best fit their neck. But then, most say they really enjoyed the pillow and had much less pain in the mornings.

One downside, like all memory foam, is that there can be a chemical smell in the beginning, and the firmness might be more than you like. Unlike traditionally shaped pillows, there is only one "right" side to a contour pillow, and it's not a suitable pillow for stomach sleepers.

The pillow comes with a terry velour cover that removes for easy washing.

Pros: Good for those with neck, shoulder, or upper body pain, firm support

Cons: Not everyone likes the shape of a contour pillow, some adjustment usually required

The best bolster pillow

The Cushy Form Half-Moon Bolster Pillow can be used in a handful of ways to ease pains throughout your body.

The Half-Moon Bolster Pillow from Cushy Form is recommended for a variety of orthopedic needs. It provides therapeutic support to multiple areas of your body. Usually used by side and back sleepers to reduce lower back pain, the pillow also eases knee, hip, ankle, and joint pains and is ideal for use after surgeries or during pregnancy.

The unique half-cylinder design allows you to position it in various ways to get support where you need it most. It's especially useful in helping you achieve proper spinal alignment by giving you either knee support for back pain relief, lumbar support while sitting, or leg space while side sleeping. It can also be used as a leg elevator to increase blood flow and reduce varicose veins.

The pillow has a soft, cushy feel that doesn't easily go flat, thanks to a unique two-layer design of a top memory foam layer outside a supportive foam core. It's hypoallergenic and easy to care for with its removable and machine washable organic cotton cover.

The Half-Moon Bolster Pillow is featured in Prevention and Bedding Pal and holds a 5-star review rating on The Art of Pillows. On Amazon, it has an average 3.9 out of 5-star rating based on nearly 1,800 reviews; 72% of customers gave it 4 or 5 stars.

Amazon customers say that it's the best pillow they've tried. A handful of reviewers do mention it's larger and firmer than expected so it may not be ideal for every body type. Certain reviewers have gripes over the pillow's smell, but others say it goes away once you air it out.

Pros: Eases multiple body pains, hypo-allergenic, dual-layer foam interior, removable and machine washable cover

Cons: May have an unpleasant odor, comes in only one size that might not accommodate every body type

The best gel pillow

The Beckham Hotel Collection Gel Pillow is as comfortable as it is supportive and helps you sleep easier with its unique cooling properties.

As the name suggests, the Beckham Hotel Collection Gel Pillow is a hotel-quality pillow that is stylish and comfortable, accommodating a variety of different sleep positions and preferences.

The pillow is filled with a super plush gel fiber that isn't overtly advertised as cooling gel, but is simply a different type of filling that has some cooling qualities to it.

The pillow is also very clean and promises to prevent dust mites, mold, mildew, and allergens out of your pillow. It's also chemical free, making it a perfect for those who struggle with asthma, allergies, and other respiratory issues.

Although you'll put a pillowcase on it, the Beckham Hotel Collection Gel Pillow does have a classic white on white lined pattern on its cover that's both fade and stain resistant. Cleaning is as easy as just throwing the pillow in the wash.

The Beckham Hotel Collection Gel Pillow is featured on Smart Home Keeping as one of the best pillows and on Pillow Picker as a top choice for preventing neck pain. On Amazon, the pillow holds a 4.4 out of 5-star average rating based on more than 5,600 reviews.

The Beckham Hotel Collection Gel Pillow is the best-selling pillow on Amazon (at the time of this posting). Buyers describe the comfort of the pillow in different ways, using words such as luxurious, and dreamy. Beyond comfort, reviewers also like that it stays fluffy and is hypoallergenic. The critical reviews mainly concerned the pillows being too soft or that they arrived in an unacceptable condition.

Pros: Gel fibers help the pillow stay fluffy and maintain shape, hypoallergenic, machine washable, stain and fade resistant

Cons: No purchase options to choose your ideal firmness or softness level, reports of items delivered damaged

The best body pillow

The Snuggle-Pedic Memory Foam Full Body Pillow will give your muscles and joints support and relief while you sleep soundly.

The Snuggle-Pedic Ultra-Luxury Full Body Pillow is filled with a combination of CertiPUR-US-certified foam and low-VOC (volatile organic compound) hypoallergenic "Biogreen" memory foam. The foam is shredded, which provides for better breathability and the much-sought-after "cool pillow" feel.

The non-removable cover is 56.4% polyester, 43% viscose of bamboo, and 0.6% Lycra. The pillow is 54-inches long by 20-inches wide, and it weighs around 7 pounds. This product is designed to conform to the contours of your body and comes with a 120-night no-hassle refund guarantee. Snuggle-Pedic also offers a 20-year warranty, so you know it's made to last.

I recently had the opportunity to try out the Snuggle-Pedic body pillow for a couple of months. I was surprised how odor-free it was, and within 10 hours of opening the vacuum seal, the pillow had expanded to its full size.

As a side-sleeper with a history of back pain, I found this pillow did an excellent job of balancing comfort and support while keeping my back aligned and knees from knocking together. The only negatives I found with this option is it weighs more than 7 pounds, which is a bit much to move around when you want to switch sides in the night.

Also, the sheer size of the pillow is like having an extra person in the bed. Snuggle-Pedic does offer a mail-in customization service if you want to add or remove the fill from your pillow.

Other product reviewers rate this pillow highly. Consumer Search recommends the Snuggle-Pedic body pillow to side sleepers who are looking for a good balance of comfort and support. However, the reviewers caution that this model may be too fluffy or big for some. FeelPainRelief appreciates that this pillow is machine washable, stays cool, and helps ease back pain, but would have liked if it came with an extra cover.

More than 3,700 buyers left 5-star reviews on Amazon. One customer, who calls the Snuggle-Pedic the "most amazing body pillow in the world," appreciates that it is big enough to provide comfort for his hefty 6'4" frame.

A common thread among many of the comments is that this product provides a "one pillow solution." Several people mention previously using up to seven pillows to achieve a comfort level that allowed them to sleep. Many shoppers were also surprised by the sheer size and weight of the pillow. — James Brains

Pros: Excellent airflow, orthopedic support, machine washable, hypoallergenic

Cons: Quite bulky

Which pillow is right for you based on fill type and your sleeping position?

Sorting out the different pillow fills

  • Memory foam: Originally created by NASA to cushion astronauts during reentry to Earth's atmosphere, today, memory foam is one of the most popular types of pillow. It's very supportive, conforms to your head and neck, is naturally hypoallergenic, and is especially good for those suffering from neck, shoulder, or upper body pain and stiffness. On the downside, it tends to be hot and is heavy.
  • Shredded memory foam: Take memory foam, shred it into small chunks, and you have a supportive, firm, and comfortable pillow filling without the heat and sweat of a traditional memory foam. Shredded memory foam molds and conforms to your body, but if you want it even more customized to your liking, it's easy to push or pull into just the right loft and shape for your sleeping pleasure.
  • Down: Real down has a luxurious, "sleeping on a cloud" fluffiness that some people love, and others hate. Down is very soft and lightweight, so it easily molds to the perfect loft and shape for your needs. It's not very supportive, however, and tends to be expensive.
  • Polyester: Polyester is the typical fill in budget pillows. It's soft, lightweight, and machine-washable, but not exceptionally supportive or firm. Still, it's a good middle ground between the softness of down and the firmness of memory foam.
  • Buckwheat hulls: Buckwheat hull pillows are not nearly as popular in the United States as they are in Asia, but they definitely have their fan club. A buckwheat hull pillow feels a lot like a beanbag; the hulls move freely inside the pillow, allowing you to adjust the shape, loft, and firmness to your liking. This is one of the best pillow fills for those who "sleep hot," as well. However, these pillows are heavy, and the hulls can make a rustling sound as you move.
  • Latex: There are two kinds of people in this world: those who love latex pillows, and those who hate them. For those who love them, the firm support with a slightly bouncy feel provides superior sleep comfort. For those who hate them, the usual complaint is that the pillow is just too firm. Latex pillows are heavy and usually expensive, but also very durable, naturally antimicrobial, and not too hot.

What's your favorite sleeping position?

While just about everyone shifts position periodically during the night, generally, you'll favor one sleep position over the rest. And when it comes to choosing the right pillow, your favorite sleep position plays a big role.

  • Side sleepers: This is the most common sleep position and the most neutral one for your spine and neck. The right pillow for a side sleeper is lofty enough to fill the gap between neck and mattress and provides medium-firm to firm support. Any fill is suitable, as long as it's the right loft for your body type.
  • Stomach sleepers: This undeniably comfy sleep position is hard on your spine, forcing your neck to turn sharply to the side. If this is your favorite way to sleep, make it easier on your back with a pillow that is soft or has little loft. Buckwheat hulls or down pillows are the best choices for those who spend most of the night on their stomach.
  • Back sleepers: If you like to sleep on your back, your perfect pillow has just enough loft to hold your head in alignment with your spine without craning your head forward or allowing it to drop back. A medium-firm density is best for this sleep position. Shredded memory foam, buckwheat hulls, or polyester are good fills for back sleepers.

How to properly clean any Mac computer's keyboard

0

macbook keyboard

  • At first glance, figuring out how to clean a Mac keyboard can look tricky, but it's a necessary process.
  • Dirty keyboards can become unresponsive and, if left uncleaned for long enough, they can become inoperable, requiring professional repair.
  • Effective cleaning of a Mac's keyboard should only take a few minutes if done on a regular basis.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Just two weeks ago, it finally came time to replace my seven-year-old MacBook Pro. I'd lost hours of work watching the spinning wheel of death, but the last nail in the coffin was my D, F, and C keys becoming unresponsive.

I had to jam the keys down with brutal force to get the letters to appear on screen, a battle I waged for all of an hour before throwing up my hands and heading to the Apple Store.

I know the unresponsive key thing was probably my fault; knowing I'd be replacing the MacBook sometime this year, I had given up on cleaning it long ago, so I can only imagine the buildup of dust and crumbs permeating the keyboard.

Now that I'm typing away on a brand new MacBook Pro, I'm committed to cleaning the keyboard at least monthly. Sure, a weekly cleaning might be even better, but let's be realistic here.

Check out the products used in this article:

MacBook Pro (From $1,299 at Apple)

How to clean any Mac computer's keyboard

For an ideal Mac keyboard cleaning, you will need a can of compressed air, a vacuum with a soft bristled attachment, and a few clean lint-free cloths.

1. Power off your Mac and remove any cables or hardware connected to the computer.

2. Hold the keyboard upright at a 75º angle (with the keys slightly facing the ceiling, not the floor), with the long axis of the device parallel to the floor.

3. Spray the compressed air along the keys. Make sure you hold the can upright, as it will expel cold fluid if turned, and keep the nozzle about one inch from the keys. Spray consistently from right-to-left or left-to-right, moving from the upper rows to the lower rows.

4. Now turn the computer screen vertical and/or keep the keyboard at a 75º angle, then spray from the "top" to the "bottom" (the end with the Escape, Caps Lock, and Function keys down to the arrow and Enter key side, e.g.) using the same method.

5. Place the computer or keyboard on a clean, flat surface, and lightly run the vacuum over the keys using the soft bristled attachment. Follow a pattern from right-to-left or left-to-right, top-to-bottom.

6. Lightly dampen a portion of cloth with water, then gently pass it over a portion of the keyboard in a steady, single-direction motion. Make sure to use several cloths or different portions of the same larger cloth to clean the keyboard to ensure the dirt, dust, and grease are removed, not merely moved about.

And give your computer a few minutes to fully dry after cleaning it before you power it on.

Italic makes luxury bags that are all under $250 using the same factories as brands like Prada and Givenchy — here's how they stack up

0

italic luxury 2

  • Italic is a new online brand that prides itself on selling luxury goods (bags, accessories, apparel, home goods) without the labels.
  • It's able to do this by partnering directly with manufacturers who have decades of experience producing for luxury designers such as Prada, Givenchy, Burberry, Celine, and Miumiu.
  • The leather crossbody ($135), backpack ($200), and tote ($250) we reviewed from the company were beautifully constructed and also functional for everyday wear.

Direct-to-consumer brands have seen huge success in the last decade. Whether it's because Millennials have become disillusioned by the excesses of designer luxury or they're just itching for a way to shop that's different from how they've always done it, this generation is particularly drawn to online-first, direct-to-consumer companies like moths to a flame.

"We cut out the middleman," the snappy phrase that once vividly captured the value of a D2C brand, however, is quickly becoming stale. Shoppers now see that, shrug, then say, "...and?" It's not enough to eliminate traditional suppliers and retail distribution methods. They want to know that there's something inherently revolutionary to the way the product is produced, whether it's a beauty product created entirely from customer demand or a comforter that's fully compostable.

Italic is an online brand that wants to flip the idea of luxury on its head by producing goods with partners that manufacture for designers like Prada, Givenchy, and Burberry. In doing this, it's able to create original designs, ensure designer-caliber quality, and offer very competitive prices all at once.

italic luxury 3

Italic first launched in late 2018 and created buzz as a $10-a-month, members-only marketplace. If you joined, you got access to label-less, high-quality bags and accessories at more affordable prices. Founder Jeremy Cai says that eventually the volume of sales Italic was doing, along with learnings from managing the customer experience, warranted opening up the marketplace to everyone.

At Italic, you can now freely shop men's and women's bags, accessories, and apparel, as well as home goods like bedding. The selection isn't large, but it seems careful and curated, confidently assured that shoppers don't actually need pages and pages of options. There are $400 leather moto jackets, $100 sheet sets, and a variety of handbags, the most expensive of which costs $250 and was produced by the same manufacturers making bags for Prada.

Cai says, "Italic is the culmination of decades of growing up with a manufacturing family and working in technology. I had always thought it backwards that manufacturers take home the smallest margin in the supply chain despite making the actual products being sold for many times the cost. Italic bridges the gap between consumers and luxury goods by partnering directly with the manufacturers instead of purchasing inventory like a brand."

Many of these manufacturers have operated for decades making bags and accessories for labels that some can only dream of buying one day. It's a risk for them to join forces with a young unknown like Italic, but Cai says that other factors are also threatening these legacy names, and in the end, it's really a win-win relationship.

He points out, "While it wasn't easy by any means to convince manufacturers to incur inventory risk for the first time in their histories, most of these companies are facing rising labor costs, uncertain global trade, and a near total reliance on wholesale. Many were already looking for a way to sell directly to consumers but without the enormous overhead of building a brand."

italic luxury

If you like nicely made things but could care less about the status that comes with flexing a designer label, then you're the perfect Italic customer. Because making anything akin to a designer dupe would tread into tricky legal waters, especially considering the products are made in the exact same factories, all of Italic's designs are original and unique to the brand. Still, with options like zip card wallets and oversized acetate sunglasses, they remain classic and familiar.

We tried a few of Italic's bags to see whether they really lived up to the high expectations. When we first received them, we immediately ooh-ed and aah-ed that they looked and felt good. Over the past month, as we actually carried and used them in our day-to-day lives, it became clear that the bags would become favorites — functional, beautifully made, and well-priced.

With its textured, quilted exterior and a simple and roomy interior compartment, it's both a fashionable and practical bag choice when I go out to a nice dinner or want to look put-together as I travel. Gold hardware runs throughout, from the chain strap to the side buckles to the feet on the bottom of the bag that prevent the ivory color from getting dirty.

Based on its substantial feel and fashion-forward half-moon shape, I would've expected the bag to cost at least $200, but am eternally grateful that it doesn't. Since I usually only carry them on especially active days, all my crossbody bags tend to get a little worn down, but this is one crossbody I'll be sure to care for properly. —Connie Chen, Insider Picks reporter

Claire Leather Double-Gusset Tote

Claire Leather Double-Gusset Tote, $250, available at Italic

How much it should cost: $785-$1,250

Made by the same manufacturer as: Prada and Miumiu

Our review: I was pleasantly surprised by how much I've used and loved this bag since it appeared on my desk a couple months ago. It's deceptively spacious inside, which makes it great for carrying to work, and I love that it has multiple handle options so I can swing it over my shoulder if I need a free hand.

The interior has two large, open pockets on each side with a zippered divider pocket in the middle. I can easily fit my 13-inch laptop, charger, and daily essentials in one side, along with a pair of flats, my lunch, and a small umbrella in the other. Honestly, I kind of feel like Mary Poppins when I carry it!

I got it in the dusty blue color (the picture above shows it to be a little darker than it really is), which looks relatively neutral even when paired with colorful outfits, but it also comes in black for a more basic option. —Sally Kaplan, Insider Picks editor

Fleur Leather Mini Backpack

Fleur Leather Mini Backpack, $200, available at Italic

How much it should cost: $580-$695

Made by the same manufacturer as: Celine and Miumiu

Our review: Since my main interaction with Italic was limited to targeted Instagram ads before testing this, I came into the experience pretty skeptical. Lots of new brands claim to bring you luxury at a fraction of the cost, but really only a few of them do.

However, after a few weeks of using the Italic mini backpack, I can say that the hype is worth it in this case. I was impressed. I've tested a lot of bags in two years at Insider Picks, and Italic's Fleur Leather Mini Backpack is one of the best in its quality and usability.

The leather feels supple, soft, and substantial to the touch, but frankly, it also just looks nice. It's the kind of nondescript black backpack that people bother to ask you about at happy hour. Simple, but can't-put-your-finger-on-it good: a phenomenon more commonly known as luxury. The price is still steep, but if it's a comfortable splurge — or you're thinking of dropping more on something similar from Celine or Miumiu — it's worth checking this out first. —Mara Leighton, Insider Picks reporter

How to turn on any Mac computer's built-in camera, or troubleshoot it if it's not working

0

MacBook

  • Every MacBook and many Mac computers have a camera built into them, but for first-time owners, figuring out how to turn on the camera on a Mac might be a challenge.
  • You can turn on and use a Mac's built-in camera by opening any app to make video calls, record movie clips, or take still photos.
  • When the camera is on, a green light will be illuminated next to it, helping remind you that your actions may be recorded.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Your MacBook laptop has a pretty decent camera tucked into the top of its screen, considering the lens is so small you can't see it without leaning in for a close look.

If you have a regular MacBook, your computer comes with a 480p camera. But if you have a MacBook Pro, your laptop comes with a higher-definition 720p camera.

Fortunately, a little green light lights up next to the Mac's camera when it's switched on, so you should be spared any awkward accidental recordings or shared video clips. (Though if you're worried about privacy, remember that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg apparently puts tape over his laptop's camera.)

Check out the products used in this article:

MacBook (From $1,299 at Apple)

How to turn on the camera on a Mac computer

Turning on the camera on a Mac is easy: just start using an app that calls for photo or video.

These include Photo Booth, FaceTime, Skype, and others. When you commence a Skype call or FaceTime session, or when you open the Photo Booth app, the camera will switch on automatically.

Screen Shot 2019 06 19 at 11.17.10 AM

Close the program that's using the camera, and it will turn off. And if you shut down an app and still see that green light shining, make sure there are not other programs open that also use the camera.

How to troubleshoot a Mac camera that won't turn on

If your Mac camera is not turning on like it should when you launch an app, the first thing to do is try a different program. If the camera comes on with the other program, then try uninstalling and reinstalling the app that gave you trouble.

If the camera is not coming on with any app, check your system preferences to make sure you don't have its permissions denied. And finally, shut down the computer and then turn it back on.

If that still fails, it's time to head to the Apple store or some other licensed service shop.

Plant delivery startup The Sill makes it easy to learn about which plants are right for your home — here's how it works

the sill houseplant delivery 3

  • Even if you live in a city hours away from the nearest forest, you can still enjoy the benefits of nature by bringing a houseplant into your life.
  • The Sill is an online company that sells a wide variety of affordable indoor houseplants and delivers them to aspiring green thumbs in the continental US.
  • I ordered a few plants from the informative, user-friendly site and loved the experience.
  • The site makes it easy to find a plant to fit your needs, preferences, and home conditions, plus the proper support to help it thrive.

After living in all types of cities, including ones with evergreen trees lining every path and, on the other end of the spectrum, concrete jungles where parks are cherished respites, I've discovered I really like being near greenery. So, too, do my friends and peers.

Whether for their aesthetic value, their tactile immediacy that social media and the internet can't offer, or our desire to care for something that doesn't require as much commitment as a pet or child, plants are the latest trend to grip millennial consumers.

In the age of online shopping, companies like The Sill are making it easy to order and take care of these delightful succulents, vines, and ferns. The Sill has been especially successful, experiencing 400% year-over-year revenue growth and making 50,000 deliveries across the continental US in 2018.

The Sill launched in 2012 to help city-dwelling millennials who don't have access to traditional garden centers or the time and space to dive into full-on gardening enjoy the benefits of indoor houseplants. It knows that we like having something green in front of us, but we also want the whole process of obtaining and keeping the green thing alive to be convenient and affordable.

It has physical stores in New York and Los Angeles, where you can take fun monthly workshops, but you don't have to live in these cities to bring some houseplants home. We tried out The Sill's online experience so you know what to expect.

the sill houseplant delivery 4

Here's what you'll find on The Sill

The Sill sells a variety of indoor plants, shoppable by size, light required, and collection (e.g. for beginners, pet-friendly). You can also shop all plants ($5-$115.50) for a virtual garden of all types of plants, from the jagged and restless Calathea Rattlesnake ($44.50) to the nearly-impossible-to-kill Zanzibar Gem ($56).

Some come in planters, which are made from either plastic or earthenware and will increase the total cost of the item, while others come un-potted.

On each plant's product page, you can learn about the brightness, sun exposure, water, and humidity required to take care of it, as well as a brief "bio" about its origins. With this information on hand, you can pick out a plant that you can realistically take care of, not just the one that looks the prettiest.

If you like the consistency of subscriptions, the company also offers $35 subscriptions, which delivers one potted plant to your door every month.

The Sill ships to the contiguous 48 states, with free shipping on orders over $75. Otherwise, you'll pay a $10 flat-rate fee for standard 5-7 day shipping.

Once you have your plant, there's a plant care resource center filled with helpful care tips, DIY ideas, and educational articles to support your emerging green thumb.

We ordered a few plants from The Sill— here's how it worked

I picked out three small plants to grace my apartment windowsill:

Although I've ordered plants online before from another service called Leon & George, I still err on the concerned side about how these small plants would travel.

They arrived together in one box at my door, packed in paper bags and wrapped in an additional protective layer of bubble wrap:

Despite their trip in a box that had shown up turned on its side, they emerged unscathed and with little mess. A layer of dry moss packed around each plant helped prevent soil from spilling everywhere.

They looked and felt healthy, and with the enclosed care instructions, I planned to keep them that way. So far (knock on wood), they've held up well.

The bottom line

I'm still fairly new to the world of houseplants, but I liked that The Sill offered a large variety to choose and mix and match from. I didn't have to deal with transporting the plants back home, and once they did find their place by my window, I felt confident enough to care for them.

More than just ship you beautiful, low-maintenance plants, The Sill is inspiring a generation of shoppers to get in touch with the natural world and showing them the benefits of plant care. If you're looking for affordable indoor houseplants and the support and information you'll need to make the most of the experience, I recommend trying out The Sill.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey says he's been 'playing with fasting' and only eats one meal per day. Here are the diets of other notable tech billionaires.

Mark Zuckerberg

  • Billionaires may splurge on multi-million-dollar estates and luxury cars, but that doesn't mean they're digging deep in their wallets for the best and most expensive foods.
  • Some tech billionaires are well known for their outrageous and unhealthy eating habits.
  • These are some of the richest in the tech world who have spoken publicly about their diets.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.
  •

Just because billionaires have the money to pay for pricey personal chefs or high-end healthy foods doesn't mean they're adhering to diets that are good for them.

Some of the richest people in tech have some pretty terrible — or bizarre — eating habits.

While some experiment with the latest health fads, like the Paleo diet and veganism, there are other tech billionaires who enjoy eating chocolate for breakfast or skip eating altogether for days.

So even though there are some wealthy techies whose diets you'll want to copy to replicate their levels of success, there's no guarantee they'll put you in good health.

Here are some of the diets and foods that tech billionaires swear by:

Richard Branson, the founder of Virgin Group, estimates he drinks 20 cups of tea a day. "I'm not sure how I'd survive without English Breakfast tea," Branson told the Daily Mail in 2016.

Source: Daily Mail

Branson said back in 2010 that he eats fruit salad and muesli for breakfast. Occasionally, he'll also eat kipper, a herring-like fish.

Source: Business Insider

Branson lives on his private Caribbean island, Necker Island. The billionaire fills his days with exercise, time with his family, and business meetings, which he prefers to schedule "over lunchtime" to help "lighten the mood." For dinner, he prefers to hold group meals "where stories are shared and ideas are born."

Source: Virgin Group

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has said he avoids early-morning meetings so that he has time to eat a healthy "leisurely" breakfast without any "fatty convenience foods." He's said he uses the extra time to spend mornings with his soon-to-be ex-wife, Mackenzie Bezos, and their four children, but that's likely changed considering their coming divorce.

Source: Business Insider

Billionaires are known for being eccentric, and that doesn't stop with their eating choices. In a meeting with a company Amazon had considered (and eventually went through with) acquiring, Bezos reportedly ordered a breakfast of Mediterranean octopus with potatoes, bacon, green garlic yogurt, and a poached egg.

Source: Business Insider

Later in the meeting, Bezos used his breakfast as a metaphor for Amazon's business strategy: "You're the octopus that I'm having for breakfast. When I look at the menu, you're the thing I don't understand, the thing I've never had. I must have the breakfast octopus."

Investor Mark Cuban said in 2014 his breakfast consists of a cup of coffee and two cookies from a company called Alyssa's Cookies. These cookies are high protein, high fiber, and low carb.

Source: D Magazine

Cuban has said these cookies are "all I will eat anymore." He enjoys the cookies so much that he helped launch the business, and has invested in the company.

Source: Business Insider

Microsoft founder Bill Gates has said that he loves Diet Coke, so much that he drinks three or four a day. "All those cans also add up to something like 35 pounds of aluminum a year," Gates wrote in 2014.

Source: Quartz

Gates' eating habits aren't much better. He's said he eats Cocoa Puffs for breakfast, but his wife, Melinda, says he skips the meal altogether. He also apparently loves cheeseburgers. Joe Cerrell, a managing director at the Gates Foundation, has said that anyone who has lunch with Gates should expect to have cheeseburgers, "no matter who you are."

Sources: Business Insider, Telegraph

"If you get the lunchtime slot with Bill, you’re eating burgers," Cerrell told the Telegraph in 2016. "Someone will always be sent to get bags of McDonald’s. I don’t think Melinda lets him have them at home."

Steve Jobs was known for his odd eating habits. The Apple cofounder would sometimes eat only one or two foods at a time, for weeks. At one point, his diet was strictly carrots and apples. At another time, he was a "fruitarian" — a diet where Jobs could only eat fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and grains.

Source: NBC News

Jobs apparently thought that his vegan diet caused him not to emit any sort of body odor, which he took to mean he didn't need to wear deodorant or shower regularly. Sometimes, Jobs would fast, using the days of not eating to "create feelings of euphoria and ecstasy."

Source: NBC News

For a man who works 80 to 90 hours a week, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk doesn't necessarily adhere to a strict diet. Musk has said he doesn't usually eat breakfast, but when he does, he'll eat a Mars bar — apt for a man who's trying to get to the red planet. "I'm trying to cut down on sweet stuff, and I should have an omelet and coffee,” Musk says.

Source: Entrepreneur

Lunch is just as inconsequential a meal as breakfast is for Musk — whatever his assistant brings him during meetings, he'll "inhale it in five minutes." Instead, Musk focuses on dinner, which often take place over business. Musk said in a 2015 Reddit AMA that his favorite foods are French cuisine and barbecue.

Sources: Entrepreneur, CBS News

For Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, breakfast isn't something he's too picky about. He'll just eat whatever he's feeling for that day, because he "doesn't like to waste time on small decisions."

Source: Business Insider

But that doesn't mean Zuckerberg hasn't experimented with any wild diets. The Facebook CEO famously set a "personal challenge" for himself in 2011 to only eat meat from animals he had killed himself. His "kill what you eat" diet included goats, pigs, chickens, and lobsters.

Source: Fortune

Zuckerberg wasn't shy about sharing the food he had killed himself with friends and house guests. He once hosted Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and treated him to goat he had killed. Dorsey said he remembers that the goat was served cold, so he stuck to salad for dinner.

Source: Business Insider

But it's not as if Dorsey is known for standard eating practices. In 2012, the Twitter CEO revealed his daily breakfast at the time was two hard-boiled eggs with soy sauce.

Source: Forbes

Dorsey has also dabbled in mainstream diet fads. He used to be a vegan, but too much beta-carotene (the orange pigment found in carrots) caused his skin to turn orange. In 2013, Dorsey was following the Paleo diet, the hunter-gathering regimen that forbids eating refined sugars, grains, and processed foods.

Source: Business Insider

More recently, Dorsey has been "playing with fasting for some time." In a podcast appearance in April, Dorsey said he only eats one meal a day — dinner – during the work week, then fasts the entire weekend. It's part of a diet trend popular in Silicon Valley called "intermittent fasting."

Sources: Twitter, Business Insider

"The first time I did it, like day three, I felt like I was hallucinating," Dorsey said on the podcast. "It was a weird state to be in. But as I did it the next two times, it just became so apparent to me how much of our days are centered around meals and how — the experience I had was when I was fasting for much longer, how time really slowed down."

Source: CNBC

However, Dorsey's diet has caused some concern from people on the internet. Users on Dorsey's platform, Twitter, have said his fasting diet sounds more like an eating disorder.

Wealthy New Yorkers are hunting for weekend homes close to the city, and it's changing the way people think of the suburbs

0

westchester county

Wealthy New Yorkers have discovered a way to have the best of both worlds.

Those who can't give up city life completely but want an escape from the hustle and bustle have found the perfect compromise: buying a weekend home in the suburbs.

These second homes are in places with hour-plus commutes like Greenwich, Connecticut; Katonah, New York; and Westchester County, reported Brooke Lea Foster for The New York Times: "Many have charming downtowns, some with the boutique exercise classes popular in the city and farm-to-table restaurants. And depending on where you buy, you might get a house with a pool that is also a short drive or walk from a beach, great hiking trails or parks. Or a lively farmers' market."

A real estate agency director told Foster the trend is more prominent than ever. Some owners spend the summer there and commute to the city; others take a three-day weekend, working from their vacation home on a weekday, according to Foster.

Read more: Millennials are choosing to face 2-hour commutes instead of paying exorbitant rates to live in cities, and it's resurrecting a near-dead part of the suburbs

The trend, Foster wrote, is a flipped take on the classic city pied-à-terre. Instead of a suburban-dweller keeping a city apartment to crash in after a long night of work, an urban-dweller turns to the suburban home as a place to retire to over or, sometimes, jumpstart, the weekend.

The tactic isn't unlike that of the wealthy millennial contingent in New York and San Francisco, who rent in the city and buy a vacation home in the country as an investment opportunity, Business Insider previously reported. When they're not living in those homes, they rent them out.

But it's not just wealthy New Yorkers who are looking at the suburbs differently. Those who can't afford to buy homes in the city are buying houses in commuter towns instead — and it's reviving the near-dead part of the suburbs known as the exurbs for the first time in a decade, Laura Kusisto of The Wall Street Journal reported

Here, houses are so affordable that buyers find the savings worth the two-hour commutes.

Play this amazing, free Battle Royale version of 'Super Mario Bros.' before Nintendo shuts it down

0

Super Mario Battle Royale

An incredible new "Super Mario Bros." game just launched, and it's totally free— and you'd better play it quick, because it almost certainly won't last.

"Mario Royale" mashes up gaming classic "Super Mario Bros." with the wildly popular Battle Royale genreto create something fresh and bizarre.

There's only one problem: It's an unofficial, unlicensed version of "Super Mario Bros." And Nintendo tends to shut those down.

Super Mario Bros. Battle Royale (Mario Royale)

You might be wondering how in the world such a game even operates, and it's shockingly simple.

The game randomizes a variety of different "Super Mario Bros." levels, in the style of the original game on the Nintendo Entertainment System, and you play against dozens of other players. You can't physically interact with the other players on screen unless you have a star power-up, which will "kill" them.

All players otherwise share a single world that each player can impact — so if you jump on a Koopa and send its shell careening away, it'll knock out someone else. But you can't, say, jump on another players' head.

Super Mario Bros. Battle Royale (Mario Royale)

The game plays almost exactly like the original game, albeit with a few minor changes to account for all the additional players.

And how do you win? Survive! If you're the last person alive, you'll take the number one spot. Check out the game right here.

Check out this video of "Mario Royale" in action for a better idea of what to expect:

  • Over the past few months, 21 out of the 24 Democrats running for president in 2020 sat down with The New York Times to answer 18 questions related to their policy positions, their heroes, and their go-to comfort food on the trail.

  • Fast food and other comfort food are staples of any political campaign for candidates and staff alike.

Over the past few months, 21 out of the 24 Democrats running for president in 2020 sat down with The New York Times to answer 18 questions related to their policy positions, their heroes, and their go-to comfort food on the trail.

Fast food and other comfort food are staples of any political campaign for candidates and staff alike. As much as they may try to stay healthy, the stress of being a presidential candidate and the delicious food offerings in early primary states like Iowa and South Carolina can make it difficult to maintain a healthy diet.

Here's what every candidate said about their favorite comfort foods and snacks:

  • Sen. Cory Booker, who is vegan, said he snacks on vegetables on the campaign trail.
  • Rep. Tulsi Gabbard also named vegan cupcakes as her guilty pleasure.
  • Both Gov. Steve Bullock and Rep. Seth Moulton said a classic hamburger is their go-to comfort meal.
  • Sen. Elizabeth Warren's comfort snack is chips and guacamole.
  • Former Rep. Beto O'Rourke said he loves "any kind of fast food."
  • Sen. Kamala Harris enjoys "a good french fry ... or just the whole thing."
  • Former Rep. John Delaney said his go-to order from McDonald's is two grilled chicken sandwiches with no sauce.
  • Sen. Bernie Sanders joked that he gained three pounds in four days from "too much comfort food" on a trip to the West Coast.
  • Both Gov. Jay Inslee and former Gov. John Hickenlooper said they enjoy M&Ms, but Inslee joked he made a pact to cut back on the candy for "belt security."
  • Mayor Pete Buttigieg said his favorite trail snack is beef jerky — which supporters sometimes give him at events.
  • Sen. Michael Bennet's favorite comfort food is an Italian sausage sandwich from Pass Key in Pueblo, Colorado.
  • Former HUD Secretary Julián Castro's "comfort drink" is iced tea.
  • Rep. Eric Swalwell said his "comfort coffee" is a mocha.
  • Sen. Amy Klobuchar's go-to comfort food is a baked potato.
  • Rep. Tim Ryan said he's an "ice cream guy."
  • Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand said she enjoys "a glass of whiskey at the end of the night."
  • Andrew Yang said KIND Bars are his go-to on the trail.
  • Mayor Bill de Blasio named pulled pork as his comfort food.
  • And Marianne Williamson said she has no comfort food.

My 5-year-old loves this interactive, augmented reality globe — he’s still playing with it 6 months later

shifu orboot

  • A high-quality toy globe should provide accurate information about regions around the world, have engaging descriptions that go beyond simple place names, and be fun to come back to again and again.
  • I like the Shifu Orboot because it uses augmented reality (AR) for an interactive experience that teaches my son about the weather, maps, animals, inventions, monuments, and cultures throughout Earth.
  • Though it costs more than your average globe (currently $49.99 on Amazon), it provides a deep well of information and brings the different regions of the world to life with an array of characters.

As a nerdy '80s kid, I became intimately acquainted with the globe and collection of World Book Encyclopedias in our family room. I'd spin the globe, find a place, and cross-reference it with the entry in the encyclopedia.

I enjoyed this setup, and it really started my lifelong interest in geography. However, my grade-school self can't help but feel jealous watching companies like Shifu use augmented reality to bring the globe alive with interactive information.

Founded in 2016 by Vivek Goyal and Dinesh Advani, Shifu specializes in toys that are fun and educational. With the help of a successful Kickstarter campaign, the company launched the Orboot in 2017. Since then, it's won countless awards from organizations like The National Parenting Center.

I recently had the opportunity to test the Shifu Orboot with my five-year-old son Bucky. Here's what makes this an excellent educational toy for our youngster.

Design

The Shifu Orboot is a physical globe with augmented reality (AR) capabilities so your child can interact with the globe beyond just spinning it.

It comes with a 10-inch wide globe, stand, parental/educator guide, fake passport, passport stamp, a sticker booklet with flags from around the world, and other travel related decals. The Orboot app is available for free download on iOS, Android, and Fire OS devices.

The globe doesn't have any borders or country names on it, but it does have graphics that represent each region. For instance, Japan has sushi, a volcano, and a sumo wrestler. There are also dozens of stars scattered across the globe, which you scan on your phone via the app to unlock factoids about the area's cultures, monuments, inventions, animals, maps, and weather.

After scanning an area, your child taps the category he or she wants to learn more about. The app then superimposes several "highlights" that represent aspects within the category, and you click on a highlight to learn all sorts of facts.

For example, Bucky really liked learning about animals. So when he clicked on the markhor (a snake-eating goat) highlights in Central Asia, it started telling Bucky about himself. After learning about the markhor, Bucky then had the opportunity to take a quiz to see what he learned.

There are more than 1,000 cool facts and 400 highlights within the app. Even parents like me might learn something new.

Set-up process

Set-up is incredibly easy and takes about 15 minutes.

The only physical assembly is installing the globe on its base. The part that takes the most time is downloading the app, syncing it with the globe, and downloading all of the information.

The app asks for your email address so you can track your child's progress, but you can still use the app without entering it. This is what I chose since I'm not going to helicopter my child's learning experience, and I try to protect my personal data as much as possible.

Then you enter your child's name and grade. You can also choose to have multiple accounts if you have more than one child. Once the lengthy syncing and information download process is done – you'll need a good internet connection for this – it's time to play.

What makes the globe stand out

I really appreciate that the app works on the Kindle Fire tablet. Bucky's main form of media consumption is his dedicated Fire HD 8, so he was able to have fun with the Orboot whenever he wanted, unlike other STEM apps that only work on Android or iOS systems and require borrowing my phone.

Once I showed Bucky how the Orboot works, he had a blast playing with it on his own. I didn't need to hold his hand through the process, though I did have to explain to him the importance of playing with it in a well-lit area. If the lighting is too dim, the camera and app have a hard time picking up the star icon.

I really like that as Bucky gets older, he'll only get more out of the Orboot too. At five, some of the concepts are hard for him to understand, but as he gets older, they will make more sense.

Though it requires a smart device, I appreciate that we don't have to buy anything else to use the Orboot. Everything you need is in the box, and there are no hidden costs for extra devices or upgrades,

Perhaps, most importantly, the Orboot keeps Bucky engaged and he's clearly learning from it. He usually only has enough patience to play with it for half an hour at a time, but in the six months we've had it, he keeps coming back to it. He also regularly comes to us with facts he's learned, and he particularly liked learning about matryoshka nesting dolls.

Cons to consider

The globe stand feels a little bit flimsy. When you grab the stand by the arched arm where kids are likely to grab it, the top comes out. On the other hand, the lightweight construction makes it easy for youngsters to carry around and the actual globe itself feels durable. We also haven't had any issues with damage in the past few months.

The potential for open-ended play is fairly limited with the Orboot. Though there are a lot of facts, highlights, and quizzes, there is a finite amount of information. And after several deep dives, a child will have explored all the Orboot has to offer. We haven't reached this point yet, but if we were to exhaust all the info the Orboot has to offer, I would be pretty thrilled that my son had learned so many facts. Shifu could also potentially add more highlights as it update the app.

Enjoyment of the Orboot also requires screens. This may not be appealing to parents who are trying to limit their child's screen time. However, it's quality, active screen time that's adding to your child's understanding of the world, unlike the mindless, passive viewing of streaming media.

The bottom line

If you're thinking of buying a globe for your child, I'd strongly recommend the Shifu Orboot Augmented Reality Interactive Globe.

It does so much more than just show geographic locations. This STEM toy also covers the culture, landmarks, inventions, animals, and more around the world, and there are even quizzes and scavenger hunts that test your child's understanding.

If you have a young one between the ages of four and 10, you'll be hard-pressed to find a better tool for nurturing an interest in geography than the Shifu Orboot.

Pros: More than 1,400 facts and highlights for kids to learn, works with a broad range of smart devices, keeps children engaged and learning

Cons: Expensive for a toy, requires a screen, doesn't have open-ended play

Have you — or anyone you've ever met — ever reached the end of Amazon page results?

To me, it sounds more like the riddle of what would happen if you were to finally reach the ends of the Earth, or beat an unbeatable video game. Does the internet break? Does time cease and then, rapidly, ominously, move backward?

Guessing by Amazon's selection size, we aren't going to find out any time soon. Put that existential dread to bed.

The online behemoth's sheer plethora of options makes it both the most convenient place to buy what you already know you love, and one of the tougher places to apply its frequent discounts to new worthwhile buys — like skin care, which can be more expensive than it warrants thanks to beauty industry markups.

Below, I've compiled a list of 23 solid skin-care products flying under the radar on Amazon that you may want to check out the next time you need a Vitamin C Serum and don't want to drop $100 or more on one. The following cult-favorites have hundreds — if not thousands — of five-star reviews you can vet yourself before buying, too.

23 under-the-radar skin-care products with hundreds of near-perfect Amazon reviews:
