Esquire's editor-in-chief showed us how not to announce your job resignation

  • Jay Fielden, editor-in-chief of Esquire, recently announced his resignation via an Instagram post that showed him leaving his building with four bags in hand.
  • Many found the post funny, and it may have inspired others to leave their jobs in the same dramatic style.
  • Yet if you want career success down the line, experts say to control your social media fingers.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Chances are all of us have fantasized about quitting a job as dramatically as possible.

Jay Fielden, editor-in-chief of Esquire, actually lived out his fantasy.

Fielden announced his resignation on Instagram, with a photo of him clutching four bags as he left the Hearst building. He accompanied his photo with a 300-word blurb recounting his experience at the company and his plans for the future (which include cooking his kids breakfast as his wife sleeps in).

Fielden left the post due to company-wide "reshuffling," according to The New York Times. Hearst Magazines, which owns Esquire, promoted former digital chief Troy Young to the helm in hopes of making the magazines fit for online

Today—after a lot of long and careful thinking—I have decided it is time to depart as Esquire’s editor in chief, three and a half years after I arrived. The issue we unveiled earlier this week—with Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Quentin Tarantino on the cover—will be, it’s not easy to say, my last. As a magazine editor and writer, I've long revered the magical intersection of words and images as they come together on the page and online. Ever since I graduated from college, in fact, I've been working for a big magazine—The New Yorker, Vogue—or editing one—Men's Vogue, Town & Country, Esquire. In the decade that Hearst Magazines has been my creative home, I've also collaborated with some of the best writers, photographers, designers, and fellow editors in the business, and it's been a genuine privilege for which I’m deeply grateful. There is no greater joy—or honor—than the camaraderie of a close and deeply talented staff, and the thing I will miss most (in addition to the great muse that is Esquire itself) is the conversation and debate, the collaboration, the shared life of revisions and deadlines and filling the monthly void. Simply put—their daily company. I have, however, felt the lure of new possibilities—all the more so now, as the means of production for a new media venture is basically my laptop (which also has the first few chapters of a book on it). For me, the time has simply come to press on in a new direction, perhaps more than one, before I get struck by male pattern baldness. When I settle for certain on what’s next, you will be among the first to know. Until then, I hope to practice my piano, play a little more tennis than usual, and make my kids breakfast while my wife gets to sleep late. I might even get to take all these bags on a long summer trip . . . or two. #esquire

A post shared by Jay Fielden (@jayfielden) on May 23, 2019 at 6:49am PDT on

While some CEOs and company leaders leave a note after exiting their company, Fielden's lengthy caption (and accompanying photo) gave rise to many questions: why did he have so many bags? Who took this photo of him right when he walked out the door? Does he know you can be successful and also bald?

Jokes aside, experts agree that if you're not a well-connected media veteran, you probably shouldn't be posting pictures of yourself leaving a company or talking overtly about it on social media.

Career coaches say one of the biggest mistakes people make after quitting a job is burning bridges: "Once you put in your two weeks notice, you may feel like you have the freedom to say or do what you want," Lynn Taylor a national workplace expert and the author of "Tame Your Terrible Office Tyrant: How to Manage Childish Boss Behavior and Thrive in Your Job, told Business Insider.

"Wrong!"

Posting to social media can be an easy way to get everything off your chest — but doing so could make your former coworkers hate you. Your last days on the job will be how you're remembered at the company, Taylor said. She recommends leaving as positively as possible.

Fielden's comments did not include anything insulting about his former employer. Still, some hiring managers may view the dramatic exit as too crass.

"The business world can often be just two degrees of separation," Taylor said. "You never know who in your office could reappear in your life, as a client, key contact, or even a boss."

So Fielden may have you fantasizing about quitting your job in style, but do yourself (and your future career) a solid and just leave quietly.

Southwest Airlines is going to allow people who don't want to fly on the Boeing 737 Max to switch planes for free (LUV)

Southwest Boeing 737 Max

  • Southwest Airlines Chief Marketing Officer Ryan Green told CNBC that his airline won't make passengers who don't want to fly on the Boeing 737 Max pay additional airfare to switch flights.
  • Southwest does not charge passengers a fee to change their tickets, but it does usually charge customers the difference in airfare.
  • All Boeing 737 Max airliners have been grounded since March 13, with the jet pulled from Southwest's flight schedule until August 5.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Those who don't want to the fly on the Boeing 737 Max won't have to. According to Southwest Airlines Chief Marketing Officer Ryan Green, passengers who find themselves booked on a 737 Max flight will be allowed to switch flights free of charge.

"If they're uneasy about flying on a Max aircraft, we'll be flexible with them," Green told CNBC. "We'll be understanding of that and allow them to fly on a different flight without paying any difference in fare."

The Dallas, Texas-based low-cost carrier does not charge passengers a fee to change their tickets, but it does charge customers the difference in airfare. But in the case of concerns around the Max, an exception will be made.

All 371 Boeing 737 Max airliners in service around the world have been grounded since March 13 following the crashes of Ethiopian Airlines Flight ET302 and Lion Air Flight JT610. Southwest Airlines is the largest operator of the Boeing 737 Max, with a fleet of 34 aircraft. All 34 planes, which are in desert storage in Victorville, California, have been pulled from the flight schedule until at least August 5. However, in a recent statement, Southwest CEO Gary Kelly said the company does not have a confirmed timeline for the 737 Max's return to service.

Southwest's concerns about passengers who may not want to fly on the 737 Max are reasonable. A poll conducted by Business Insider a week after the Ethiopian Airlines crash showed that 53% of American adults surveyed would not want to fly on a Boeing 737 Max, even after the Federal Aviation Administration clears the aircraft for service.

Prime day

  • First introduced four years ago, Amazon Prime Day has quickly become a well-known fixture of the online shopping world.
  • Below, we show you how to take advantage of all the great deals featured during the sales event (the date of which has yet to be announced).
  • Most importantly, you'll want to make sure you're a Prime member, or else you won't be able to shop on Prime Day.
  • You should also bookmark the Insider Picks Prime Day 2019 page. It's where you'll find curated deal roundups and other tips and tricks related to Prime Day 2019.

For any event — a half-marathon, a surprise party, a trip to a new city — preparation is key. And yes, even shopping counts as an event, especially when you plan on buying the products you need most in your life all at once.

Amazon's yearly sales event, Prime Day, certainly warrants some extra preparation ahead of time since it lasts more than a day, features more than 1 million deals worldwide, and essentially pits you against hordes of other online shoppers who also want that kitchen appliance or pair of headphones you've been eyeing.

Though Prime Day is still some weeks away, we've been doing the equivalent of getting up for early morning runs and putting in work at the gym for what is sure to be a whirlwind of a race: analyzing the deals and best sellers of past Prime Days, figuring out all the ways Prime Day will save you money beyond physical products, and more.

This isn't Insider Picks' first Prime Day rodeo, and even if it's not yours either, the following guide to how to shop Prime Day will be good refresher on everything you need to succeed during the sales event.

And if this summer is the first time you'll be shopping Prime Day, welcome to the party. Despite constant reminders that Amazon's website crashed due to overwhelming traffic last year, you shouldn't feel intimidated.

Insider Picks will be here to make shopping during Prime Day as smooth as possible, with deal roundups and resources like the guide below.

Read up on everything related to Prime Day 2019 here.

1. Become a Prime member

Sign up for a free 30-day trial of Amazon Prime here

More than 100 million people worldwide have already signed up for a Prime membership — Prime Day is a timely opportunity to see why. Unlike many online membership trials, it's one you'll want to keep beyond the first 30 days because there are dozens of useful benefits of being a Prime member. If you're not already a member, you'll want to time your sign-up for the month of July so you can take advantage of Prime Day.

2. Mark your calendar

Unfortunately, we don't have access to Jeff Bezos' journal, so we don't know the exact date yet. Amazon has not announced the official date(s) of Prime Day 2019, but based on previous years, it will likely take place in mid-July.

We'll update you once we do learn when Prime Day 2019 is happening.

3. Narrow down what you want to buy

See what Insider Picks readers bought on Prime Day 2018 here

Learn more about the devices that will be on sale during Prime Day here

It's smart to go into Prime Day with at least some idea of what you want to buy (and save on). If you need some inspiration from your fellow Insider Picks readers, these were the 30 top-selling products from Prime Day 2018

Aptly, Amazon devices on Amazon's special day will be enjoying significant discounts. If you're able to, we recommend holding off until Prime Day to make your next Echo or Kindle purchase. Amazon now makes tons of different devices, from tablets and TVs to speakers and yes, even microwaves, so refresh yourself on all the different options here

Your Prime Day wish-list doesn't have to include a best seller or an Amazon device — but you should compile some type of list to make shopping more efficient.

4. Download the Amazon app

Learn more about how to use the Amazon app here

You can use the Amazon app all year long to streamline your mobile shopping experience, but it's particularly useful for Prime Day. Before Prime Day goes live, go to the "Deals" section of the app, where you'll be able to view all upcoming deals. Click "Watch this deal" to receive an alert the moment it goes live. The app organizes all the deals you're interested in, so just pay attention to your phone notifications if you want to grab a deal before it's gone.

The Amazon app also sends periodic tips and tricks for how to make the most of Prime Day.

5. Familiarize yourself with Lightning Deals

Learn more about how Lightning Deals work here

During Prime Day, some deals will run all day, but others will only be available for a limited amount of time, while supplies last. These Lightning Deals are usually open to everyone shopping on Amazon, but on Prime Day, they'll be exclusive to Prime members.

As their name suggests, Lightning Deals go quick, which is why you'll want to watch the deals you want (the app is the easiest way to do this). It is still possible to get a deal that has been 100% claimed if you add yourself to the deal's waitlist and another shopper bails on their purchase.

6. Create your grocery list

Shop Whole Foods at Amazon here

Last year, Prime members who spent $10 at a Whole Foods Market in the week leading up to Prime Day received a $10 Amazon credit to use online during Prime Day. First-time Prime Now shoppers received $10 off their Whole Foods delivery order, as well as $10 off a future order. They also enjoyed exclusive offers on select seasonal items such as organic strawberries and bagged coffee.

This year will be the second Prime Day collaboration between Amazon and Whole Foods, so we expect similar, if not better, grocery deals. Try doing your grocery shopping at Whole Foods during the week of Prime Day to save on your weekly food essentials.

  • Finding a swimsuit that looks good and makes you feel great can be a challenge.
  • With so many factors to consider, like price, style, support and coverage, it can be hard to know which brands are best for what.
  • Luckily, we've tried out plenty of swimsuits over the years and have discovered lots of great brands. Keep reading to find 12 places to shop for swimwear this summer, from under-the-radar finds to big-name brands

Summer means days spent laying by the pool, playing games on the beach, and hanging by the lake. Whatever your summer looks like, you're probably going to need a swimsuit.

With so many bathing suit styles out there, you'd think shopping for your next beach day would be a breeze. Yet, for most of us searching for a bathing suit is not the most fun shopping experience. It can be hard to find a suit that fits your style, budget, and, most importantly, makes you feel awesome.

To help make your swimsuit shopping a little easier, we rounded up 11 brands serving up great swimwear. We'll give you a quick overview of each brand to help you sort through the noise and find a suit that actually fits your style and budget.

Here's a guide to the swimsuit brands you'll see everywhere this summer:

SummerSalt

Shop Summersalt

Direct-to-consumer swimwear brand SummerSalt is delivering luxury suits at under-$100 prices. Their styles are much more than just trendy, though — they're durable, made with premium recycled fabrics, and have UPF 50+ to protect skin from harmful UV rays.

Athleta

Shop Athleta Swim

Made with supportive, stretchy, and durable (not to mention, mostly recycled) fabrics with UPF 50+, Athleta's swimwear is perfect for active beach days. If you're looking for a cute suit that can keep up while you surf, swim, or paddleboard, check out their selection.

Aerie

Shop Aerie Swim

Mix and match with fun colors, styles, and prints or go for a unique one-piece option. Aerie has trendy styles, inclusive sizing, and affordable prices. Plus, they're constantly having sales, so if you're someone who likes to stock up on suits before summertime, Aerie may be the place to do it.

Swimsuits for All

Shop Swimsuits for All

Swimsuits for All specializes in women's swimwear sizes 4 and up, with a particular focus on plus-size suits that offer actual support. If you're looking for a range of options — tankinis, bikinis, and one pieces — this is an easy spot to shop. You'll find classic silhouettes in neutral colors alongside more modern styles in vibrant patterns.

Boden

Shop Boden Swim

Boden's preppy styles are as well-executed as they are playful. Smart features like body-sculpting linings, slimming panels, and subtly hidden bust support ensure your suit will stay put for whatever your beach day brings.

Helen Jon

Shop Helen Jon

Helen Jon uses its own employees to help design and tailor the fit of its swimsuits, resulting in pieces that fit the unique shapes and quirks of women's bodies extraordinarily well. They're on the pricier side (a one-piece is around $135), but superior comfort and fit make them well worth the price.

Lively

Shop Lively Swim

With origins as a lingerie company, Lively is already well-versed in making comfortable and supportive undergarments — and its swimwear line is no exception. The bikinis and one-pieces have simple designs, great support that fits a variety of bust sizes, and are all under $100.

Jolyn

Shop Jolyn Swim

Jolyn swimwear is designed for athletics, but the styles are much more colorful and fun than your average racing suits. Beyond just being able to filter by color and coverage, Jolyn lets you filter by activity swimming, beach volleyball, water polo, surfing, and off-duty for when you're just chilling — so you can find the perfect suit for any occasion.

Solid & Striped

Shop Solid & Striped Swim

You've probably seen Solid & Striped pop up on your Instagram feed at some point. The brand makes really fun, trendy styles, with of-the-moment patterns and fabrics — think polka dots, cheetah print, and even velvet. If you're looking for something without any padding, check out Solid & Striped none of its suits have any included.

Eloquii

Shop Eloquii Swim

Eloquii makes swimwear that stands out for women sizes 14 to 28. Bright colors, unique patterns, and fun details like ruffles help you accentuate and flaunt your figure. The brand has more simple offerings, like a solid one piece, or more unique options, like a colorblock suit covered in bright stripes and cutouts.

Andie

Shop Andie

Andie is a female-founded, female-led brand whose swimsuits were designed with feedback from thousands of women in mind. The result? A small selection of simple, but stylish one-pieces and bikinis in a few solid colors made with fabrics that will hold you in whether you're playing water sports or just lounging by the pool.

Target

Shop Target Swim

Affordable prices and a wide range of styles make Target an easy spot to do your swimsuit shopping. In-house brands like Xhilaration, Aqua Green, and Shade Shore cater to all tastes, whether you're looking for a classic silhouette or a trendy pattern. With prices starting as low as $15, Target's affordability and accessibility can't be beat.

BioLite is responsible for some of the most innovative outdoor gear on the market today — and it's all up to 35% off for Memorial Day

biolite headlamp 330

I have other headlamps I use for hiking, cycling, and working in the dark, but none are as easy to use, comfortable, or intuitive as the BioLite HeadLamp 330.

I have long hair, and often use a hairband to keep it out of my way if I am running, climbing, or working on our truck. This headlamp doesn't feel any different to a thick elastic headband, but it throws out 330 lumens of white light for 3.5 hours, or red light to preserve night vision. What that translates to is a month of after-dark checks to see if my chickens are roosting, or the entirety of a camping trip without a recharge. The no-bounce design, light weight, and adjustable angle also make it a great choice for night-time trail runs and climbs that start before dawn.

From May 20 to May 28, BioLite is running a sitewide sale where you can save up to 35% on everything, including the Headlamp 330. I'll be stocking up on headlamps as gifts (my mother uses one for early-morning livestock checks on her farm, my father for walking his dogs after dark). At $42.46 instead of its usual $50, this is a modest discount, but nevertheless the cheapest one I have ever seen the Headlamp 330.

Another favorite BioLite item on sale this Memorial Day is the SolarHome 620, a solar-powered lighting and radio system that has been a great addition to my adventure truck. The large solar panel can soak up enough of the sun's energy to easily light our home away from home all night and still spare some juice for charging cellphones. Its three lights are perfect for lighting a campsite, cooking area, and tent, and are much easier to set up than a dual-battery system on the truck. With the provided hooks we simply use trees, rocks, or hiking poles to suspend the lights and our campsite becomes a beacon in the wilderness. The 18-foot daisy chain and remote switches mean we can see all the way to our tent, and then shut off the lights once we're tucked up in bed. There's also a motion sensor, which really freaks out would-be food thieving coyotes. You can plug in an MP3 player or listen to the radio, which is a nice bonus if you're using the SolarHome as your party hub. The system is robust, too, so much so that over 40,000 homes in Kenya rely on it for light (which would otherwise be provided by fire that is harmful to the lungs) and use the radio for a connection to outside news and information. During the sale, the SolarHome is only $127.46, a saving of $22.49 on its usual price.

BioLite's most famous item is its CampStove, which acts like your own tiny power plant by turning solid fuel into power for your electronic devices while it heats water for your dinner! It also includes a small light to light up your surroundings, boils 1 liter of water in 4-5 minutes, and packs down into the same space as a 32-ounce Nalgene bottle. With a discount of $19.49, the CampStove is just $110.46 through Memorial Day.

In addition to these products, BioLite makes a great selection of power bricks, camp cookware, lights, home stoves, and even a pizza oven! Everything is on sale right now, and there's no code required.

Check out the BioLite site for additional savings during the company's sitewide Memorial Day sale.

parachute memorial day sale 3

Every part of your bed, not only the mattress or pillow, affects how you sleep. Parachute Home is a bedding and bath company that believes (rightly so) that softer, better sheets make a big difference and you shouldn't have to pay a premium to enjoy their advantages.

This Memorial Day, you can enjoy the noticeably more comfortable experience of sleeping in Parachute bed sheets at an affordable price.

From May 24 through May 27, Parachute is offering 20% off everything on its site, no code necessary.

In addition to bedding sets, Parachute sells bath towels, pillows, home decor, and other living essentials. This past year has been big for the company, which introduced new products like a mattress and rug collection.

From our experience, these products are among the best we've ever purchased for our home. A big reason why is that the company uses high-quality materials in all its wares, like 100% long-staple Egyptian cotton in its percale and sateen sheets.

When we first introduced Parachute to our readers, founder Ariel Kaye broke down the differences among the brand's percale, sateen, and linen sheets so you can decide for yourself which one is best for you.

We've also reviewed its Classic Bathrobe, which attracted a 2,000-person wait list; its summer-appropriate Cloud Cotton Robe; and its Bath Towels, which we discovered there's more to than meets the eye.

Keep scrolling to see which Parachute bedding and bath products you should buy during the sale, or you can browse the whole site here.

The Frywall made famous on 'Shark Tank' is a game changer that reduces the mess of cooking — here's why I like using it

frywall splatter guard

  • Making delicious fried foods and other oil-intensive dishes comes at a cost: the mess of oil splatters on your body and surrounding kitchen space.
  • The Frywall ($17.95-$28.95), a silicone kitchen accessory that fits into your pan like a funnel, is a twist on the traditional splatter screen.
  • It does a better job of containing oil splatters, doesn't cause condensation, and lets you easily access your food, so you can enjoy your food with less danger and less clean-up.

Crispy bacon is an indulgence as integral to homemade brunch as pancakes doused in maple syrup and mimosas with a concerning OJ-champagne ratio. What usually precludes the excitement of digging into my plate of grease, however, is pure anxiety. As I dance around my stove avoiding the splashes of oil — sometimes successfully, most of the time not — I think, maybe one day I'll be able to cook bacon without breaking a light sweat.

I know splatter screens exist but a few problems run common with traditional designs. They're made from the wrong materials and aren't heat-resistant enough, they cause condensation to form and weaken the frying intensity, or they block your pan so you can't check on or otherwise access your food.

A new approach to the splatter screen, made famous by the show "Shark Tank" in 2018, is a better way to protect yourself and your kitchen from oil splatters. More appropriately described as a splatter guard, the Frywall is a BPA-free silicone funnel that fits into your pan and forms a protective wall around it.

frywall splatter guard 2

Founder Yair Reiner created the Frywall in his kitchen after a "particularly splattersome duck breast" proved to be the last straw. His innovative solution provides protection from splatters while allowing steam to escape and you to access your food at all times.

The Frywall works in all types of cookware (pans, sauciers, skillets, etc.) and materials (cast iron, stainless steel, ceramic, etc.), and there are three main sizes (8", 10" and 12"). It can withstand temperatures up to 450°F, meaning you can use it in the oven (as long as it's kept away from the open flame), and it's also safe to clean in the dishwasher.

Read more: 18 "Shark Tank" home products that are actually useful

frywall splatter guard 3

I tried the Frywall in my own kitchen and can confirm it's a game-changer that reduces the mess of cooking.

I used more oil than normal to see just how much the Frywall could handle. To my relief, most of the splatters that would normally hit me or the adjacent wall, which has received its fair share of greasy oil stains, stayed within the Frywall. It's not a completely perfect catch-all, but it worked better than splatter screens I've tried in the past to do its job.

In general, it was larger than I expected. The walls are tall, obviously to catch the splatters, though that did make reaching tongs or a spoon into the pan a little difficult. But I could still see and access everything I needed in the end, and the overall cooking experience was easier because I didn't have to keep lifting up a screen to check on my progress.

frywall splatter guard 4

Other than preventing splatters and bubbling oil spillage, the Frywall is great for keeping your food contained. I sometimes underestimate the number of ingredients I put in the pan, so I'm left with an overflow of vegetables or diced meat threatening to escape. With the Frywall, my inability to select the correct-sized pan wasn't as crucial because my food had extra vertical surface area to bump up against.

All in all, I'm glad to have this $20 accessory in my kitchen now because I'm less nervous about cooking foods with a lot of oil. It saves the time and frustration spent cleaning up my stove and countertop after I cook, plus the Frywall itself is easy to clean. I don't have a dishwasher, but the silicone can be hand-washed, and the flexible shape makes it easy to roll or fold up for storage.

  • The company was founded by a team of MIT grads (skin-care obsessives, brain and cancer researchers, and chemical engineers) and used research to create formula blueprints.
  • Using artificial intelligence, they cross-referenced those formulas with millions of self-reported reviews to determine the best ingredients and worst ingredients for users.
  • The resultant $28 Glow Maker is a cult-favorite and prone to frequent sellouts.
  • Consumers have been quick to note the Glow Maker has a similar ingredient list to the multi-award-winning C E Ferulic Serum ($166), despite being more than $130 cheaper.

Generally speaking, most skin care is expensive. There are good options at low prices, but there are also one too many $300 night creams and pots of rare ingredients infused with gold flecks to call the genre accessible all-around.

Practically speaking, good skin care should be much easier to get your hands on. Certain ingredients just work, and it shouldn't be too difficult to cut through the noise and formulate something that combines those proven ingredients in a basic bottle that can retail for an affordable price.

That's what Maelove CEO Jackie Kim thought when she set out to create a "radically affordable" skin-care startup — and, in so many words, that's what the company has seemingly achieved with the cult-favorite $28 "Glow Maker" Vitamin C serum. After four sellouts, it's now available to buy as the company re-ups for the fifth time.

The Glow Maker focuses on hyperpigmentation, smoothing, and hydration. It’s packed with canonical ingredients like vitamins C (15% L-ascorbic acid), E and ferulic acid for antioxidation protection, hyaluronic acid for hydration, and a proprietary mix of botanicals (grape seed extract, aloe, aurantium dulcis, and magnolia) for nourishment and easier makeup application. The addition of extracts also makes the serum better for sensitive skin than most vitamin C serums.

Consumers have also been quick to note The Glow Maker ($28) has striking similarities to SkinCeuticals' multi-award winning C E Ferulic Serum ($166), despite it being more than $130 cheaper.

For reference:

  • The ingredient list of C E Ferulic according to SkinCeuticals ($166): Aqua/Water/Eau, Ethoxydiglycol, Ascorbic Acid, Glycerin, Propylene Glycol, Laureth-23, Phenoxyethanol, Tocopherol, Triethanolamine, Ferulic Acid, Panthenol, Sodium Hyaluronate.
  • The ingredient list of Glow Maker according to Maelove ($28): Water (Aqua), Ascorbic Acid, Ethoxydiglycol, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Glycerin, Lecithin, Sodium Hyaluronate, Ferulic Acid, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Callus Culture Extract, Magnolia Officinalis Bark Extract, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Extract, Xanthan Gum, Disodium EDTA, Sodium Metabisulfite, Triethanolamine, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexyglycerin, Maltodextrin, Tocopherol.

Kim and co-founders Brad and Rishi, MIT graduates, leveraged artificial-intelligence techniques to scan millions of self-reported product reviews to determine which ingredients correlated with success, and which to avoid. From there, Kim applied a similar approach to securing a partnership with one of the world's best cosmetics labs by cold-calling hundreds of people who worked at luxury brands she admired, following up with the tiny percentage that responded, and eventually getting enough insight from a handful of respondents to make real inroads.

The resultant three-years-in-the-making serum continues to generate enthusiastically positive reviews.

In person, Maelove's Glow Maker is noteworthy apart from its origin story. It does what it's supposed to do (brightens the complexion, lightens dark spots) but its real standout features are that it absorbs completely and almost instantaneously into the skin and provides a glow that is noticeable but definitely not enough that people with oily skin should steer clear. There's no tangible residue, and the skin doesn't feel sticky or tacky post-use.

And while my skin is sensitive and can be dried out by all-over vitamin C application, I have not had that issue with Maelove's iteration — something I'd credit to their botanical blend and hyaluronic acid, which can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water.

The Maelove team is an unusual one— comprised of cancer and brain researchers, chemical engineers, lawyers, doctors, and an obsessive skin-care enthusiast — but that outsider perspective is its greatest advantage. The startup's founding goal was affordability and accessibility, and thanks to obsessive research and a streamlined, no-fuss approach to the industry, that goal is met with a product line unanimously priced under $30

And if you've been paying $166 for SkinCeuticals' C E Ferulic Serum, you owe it to yourself to check out the Glow Maker, since you could technically buy 6 bottles of Maelove Glow Maker for one bottle of C E Ferulic if you like it enough to swap — and I wouldn't be surprised. If you don't, they offer a 100-day return window for a full refund.

43 million Americans will hit the road this Memorial Day Weekend. Here are the most crowded times to avoid.

los angeles traffic

  • 43 million Americans are expected to hit the road this Memorial Day Weekend, AAA says.
  • It could be the highest travel volume since 2005, the group estimates, despite gas prices reaching close to $3 per gallon.
  • These are the travel times to avoid if you don't want to sit in traffic, based on data from INRIX.

This Memorial Day Weekend will be the busiest in more than a decade, AAA is warning motorists ahead of the holiday weekend.

43 million Americans are expected to hit the road for the inaugural summer weekend, the most since 2005, making travel a headache in some areas, the organization is warning. That's despite average gas prices spiking to nearly $3 per gallon.

"Americans are eagerly anticipating the start of summer, and expensive gas prices won't keep them home this Memorial Day weekend," Paula Twidale, vice president of AAA Travel, said in a press release. "Consumer spending remains strong, helped by solid job and income growth. Families continue to prioritize spending their disposable incomes on travel, and near-record numbers of them are looking forward to doing just that for Memorial Day."

In some cities, the best time to leave to avoid traffic was on Thursday. But for those stuck working a full week, you can still dodge soul-crushing traffic by avoiding the busiest times. In most places, that means not leaving until after the traditional rush hour on Friday.

Not headed out of town? The navigation app Waze says gyms, theaters, and other performing arts venues see massive decreases in traffic during the holiday Monday compared to usual weekdays. Beaches, cemeteries, and movie theaters on the other hand, tend to be much more crowded.

Here's when to avoid travelling, based on your city, according to data from AAA and INRIX:

A lawyer who works with cruise passengers reveals the one thing you need to know before getting on a cruise ship

  • Cruise lines make significant efforts to keep their passengers happy (sometimes at the expense of their employees), but when a passenger is injured, the cruise line's attitude can change.
  • If, as a passenger, you slip and fall or are assaulted, the cruise line is no longer your friend, Michael Winkleman, a maritime lawyer for Lipcon, Margulies, Alsina, and Winkleman, told Business Insider.
  • "Anytime anything bad happens, the cruise lines go into adversarial mode," he said. "All they're looking to do is protect themselves. They're not really concerned about protecting you or helping you."
  • "CLIA cruise lines have no higher priority than the safety and security of their guests and crew," a Cruise Lines International Association representative said.

Cruise lines make significant efforts to keep their passengers happy (sometimes at the expense of their employees), but when a passenger is injured, the cruise line's attitude can change, according to a lawyer who represents cruise-line passengers and employees.

If, as a passenger, you slip and fall or are assaulted, the cruise line is no longer your friend, Michael Winkleman, a maritime lawyer for Lipcon, Margulies, Alsina, and Winkleman, told Business Insider.

"Anytime anything bad happens, the cruise lines go into adversarial mode," he said. "All they're looking to do is protect themselves. They're not really concerned about protecting you or helping you."

Read more: A former Royal Caribbean employee reveals the one question you should always ask cruise ship workers

When a passenger is injured, one of the ship's security officers will take a statement from the passenger using questions that could help the cruise line defend itself in court, Winkleman said. The officer may, for example, ask what the passenger could have done to avoid the incident that led to the injury. But shortly after being injured, a person is not in the right state of mind to defend his or her interests when being questioned, Winkleman said.

If a passenger sues a cruise line, the cruise line will ensure that case is tried in a federal court, which will require a higher standard of evidence and often have a stricter judge than a state court, Winkleman said.

"The deck is certainly stacked against the average person who gets hurt when you're going up against a cruise line," he said.

A representative for the Cruise Lines International Association, a trade association for the cruise industry, told Business Insider that each member cruise line is required to create security protocols to ensure the safety of its passengers and crew members. The association's members include Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Royal Caribbean International, among others.

"CLIA cruise lines have no higher priority than the safety and security of their guests and crew," the representative said.

7 ways millennials are changing marriage, from signing prenups to staying together longer than past generations

israel wedding

  • Millennials are being strategic when it comes to love, and it's changing marriage.
  • Millennials fear getting divorced and are financially burdened, so they're marrying later in life as they take time to get to know their partner, accumulate assets, and become financially successful.
  • But some millennials aren't getting married at all — and it's causing the marriage rate to decline.
  • Visit BusinessInsider.com for more stories.

Marriage is getting a generational facelift.

The reasons are many.

Often the children of divorce themselves, millennials fear going through a divorce. So, they're being strategic when it comes to love. They're taking more time to find the right partner, cohabitating before legally committing, and signing prenups to protect their assets. As a result, they're bringing the divorce rate down.

Millennials are also delaying marriage for economic reasons — burdened with financial struggles like debt, they want to become financially successful first. And because more couples are coming together from different cultural or religious backgrounds, they're more likely to pay for multiple ceremonies.

But that's for those millennials who do marry — the generation is also bringing the marriage rate down.

From love to weddings, see how millennials are evolving marriage.

SEE ALSO: Couples are dropping up to $100,000 on multiple wedding ceremonies — and that's just one way they're breaking marriage traditions

DON'T MISS: Why are millennials abandoning divorce? Sex, money, and their parents

Millennials are fueling a declining divorce rate.

Millennialsare driving a 24% decline in the US divorce rate, reported Hannah Smothers for Cosmopolitan. Often children of divorce themselves, many millennials fear breakups and are taking more time to find the right partner to avoid an unstable marriage.

They're also taking time to get their financial act together first — like establishing a career and paying off student loan debt — so they can enter marriage with less stress.

Millennials are marrying at a later age.

Taking more time to find the right partner and prioritize financial success is causing millennials to marry later in life compared to previous generations. The median age of first marriage in the US is 27 for millennial women and 29 for millennial men, according to the US Census Bureau

And those who have found the right partner are waiting longer in their relationships to get married — 4.9 years on average, reported Kristin Salaky for INSIDER, citing a Bridebook study.

Millennials are cohabitating and even buying homes together before marriage.

More couples are cohabitating before marriage —  a sixfold increase from their parents' generation — and it's just another move contributing to a decline in divorce rates, reported INSIDER's Kim Renfro. A study published in the Journal of Marriage and Family asserted that living together "has become part of the pathway towards marriage."

Some couples are even buying homes together before getting engaged, prioritizing homeownership over marriage. This reflects the generation's shift in attitudes toward marriage and is a result of economic conditions — high housing prices make splitting a mortgage favorable.

More millennials aren't marrying at all.

But some millennials aren't marrying at all. Marriage rates are declining because some millennials find marriage less important than it used to be, Rachel Sussman, psychotherapist and relationship expert at Sussman Counseling, previously told Business Insider

Among Americans, marriage has decreased from 72% of adults wed in 1960 to half in 2014, and its partly due to traditional gender roles and economic forces that make men less appealing partners. A decline in typically male-dominated manufacturing jobs have made men less attractive as husbands because they benefit from said jobs, according to a paper by University of Zurich economist David Dorn.

There's also this fact: an estimated 25% of millennials will never marry.

More millennials are signing prenups before getting married.

Prenuptial agreements, which set expectations for a division of assets and finances in the event of a divorce, are usually associated with the wealthy. But that's not preventing them from shedding their stigma and becoming increasingly popular among Americans, especially millennials.

More than half of lawyers surveyed by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers saw an increase in prenups among millennials, and 62% saw a rise in prenups overall from 2013 to 2016.

The trend is more evidence of how millennials fear divorce and marry at a later age. As children of divorce, many are predisposed to protect their interests, especially when it comes to the assets and debt they've had more time to accumulate before marrying.

More millennials are having multiple wedding ceremonies.

Multiple wedding ceremonies are a rising trend among couples tying the knot. Combined, these ceremonies cost $50,000 on average but can exceed $100,000, Jessica Schiffer reported for The New York Times

"Multiceremony wedding experiences are becoming more common among couples looking to accommodate different cultural and religious backgrounds, not to mention guests who may not be able to afford pricey destination weddings," Schiffer wrote.

More than half of couples today are marrying someone with a different background, which has reduced the perception that multiple ceremonies are "over the top," Schiffer said, citing stats from WeddingWire.

Millennials are having more nontraditional weddings.

When tying the knot, millennial couples are doing things outside the norm.

They tend to ditch traditional weddings, opting for unconventional venues such as barns and farms over banquet halls and hotel reception rooms, reported Business Insider's Mary Hanbury.

And because they're waiting longer to get married and cohabitating first, millennials have already build a collection of household staples. As a result, "honeyfunds" have become a more popular wedding gift option, reported Linda Marx for The New York Times. Millennials are more likely to ask for cash on their wedding day, instead of a toaster or gravy boat.

The best flip flops for men and women

the best flip flops for men and women

  • Flip flops are the unofficial footwear of summertime. Wear them to the beach, backyard barbecue, or anywhere that calls for casual attire.
  • But this type of open-toe sandal has a reputation for being plasticky, flimsy, and uncomfortable.
  • Sanuks' flip flops for men and women are soft as a cloud and made of cushy yoga mat material.

You know the person who shows up for beach day in leather sandals with like eight buckles and makes everyone wait around for 20 minutes at the edge of the boardwalk while she takes them off? Yeah, that person is me.

I never have the right footwear for the beach, because I've never found a pair of flip flops I really love, and flip flops are really the only appropriate footwear for the beach. Some people live in them from June through September, and I think they are onto something. Flip flops are so versatile — you literally don't have to think about them. Depending on the material, you might not even need to worry about sudden summer rainstorms while wearing them.

When most of us think of flip flops, we think of slim, inconsequential shoes with no real arch support that we mainly buy because they are cheap and simple. But these days there are plenty of comfortable options appropriate for more than just lounging poolside. Maybe you won't wear them to the office (or maybe you do, if you're lucky to work in an ultra-low-key office), but these picks are suitable for exercising, outdoor showers, and even lunch with friends on a hot day.

Here are the best flip flops you can buy:

Updated on 5/24/2019 by Les Shu: Updated prices, links, and formatting.

Keep scrolling to read more about our top picks.

The best flip flops overall

Sanuk is reinventing the flip flop with unique designs for men and women made of yoga mat material for maximum comfort and ultimate style.

When you do yoga, there's a moment when you press your hands into the mat during downward dog or sink into child's pose, and the world melts away. That sense of relief and comfort is in large part due to the mat itself. Yoga mats, though relatively thin, make you feel cushioned and supported even on top of a hardwood floor. Sanuk makes flip flops that mimic that experience.

The footbeds are made of actual yoga mat material. It's a cool, unique concept that translates well to real-life comfort. The brand's most popular style for women is the Yoga Sling 2, which has well over 6,000 Amazon reviews and one of The Strategist's picks.

A stylish wrap-around silhouette that is clearly yoga-inspired, makes these art-gallery-owner-chic. While not a true flip flop due to a piece of fabric that secures around the ankle, it still gives you that thong sandal look.

For men, there is the cleverly named Men's Beer Cozy Flip Flop. With more than 1,500 reviews and a 4.1 Amazon rating, these are popular. This is more of a traditional flip flop with thick straps, Sanuk's signature yoga mat footbed, and a curve for additional arch support.

"Love, love, love. Very comfortable and swishy," writes one Amazon customer. Another shopper says, "I have a previous pair I bought five years ago that I still wear to this day."

Pros: Cushy footbed made of yoga mat material, cute styles that work for a variety of occasions, comfortable for walking long distances

Cons: May want to size up, material isn't waterproof

Buy the Sanuk Women's Yoga Sling 2 Flip Flop on Amazon from $13 and up

Buy the Sanuk Men's Beer Cozy Flip Flop on Amazon from $17.17 and up

The best colorful flip flops

Havaianas are the most iconic flip flops around, with a huge selection of rainbow colors, fun prints, and simple designs for men and women.

Havaianas are the ideal beach sandal — durable, colorful, and able to withstand rough conditions. Even if they get a little scraped-up and windswept, they'll still look cool after the fact.

The sandals come in a wide variety of color and style combinations. The most iconic styles — the ones you think of first when you hear the brand name — are probably the Havaianas Women's Slim Flip Flop and the Men's Top Sandal Flip Flop.

Basically men's and women's versions of the same shoe, they both have a slightly curved footbed and slim rubber straps stamped with the Havaianas logo. The Slim Flip Flop comes in more colors and has almost 2,000 reviews on Amazon, while the Top Sandal Flip Flop has about 500.

Both are highly rated and raved about by fans. "I don't think you can ever go wrong with Havaianas! They're so comfortable, cute, durable, and last forever!" says one reviewer. Even though they look more appropriate for the beach than the hiking trail, another shopper says they even held up while camping.

Pros: Simple, comfortable, comes in many colors and designs, holds up well over long periods of time, good for the beach

Cons: Super-casual style probably won't work for less-casual settings

Buy the Havaianas Women's Slim Flip Flops on Amazon from $19.34 and up

Buy the Havaianas Men's Top Sandal on Amazon from $14.40 and up

The best poolside flip flops

Maybe the Vertico Shower and Pool Sandals won't be the most stylish shoes in your closet, but they're comfy and you can get them soaking wet.

Vertico Shower and Pool Sandals are great for wearing in water. They're more of a slide than a flip flop, but they will still give you that satisfying slapping-sound when they hit the base of your heel.

Considering these rubber shoes are pretty orthopedic looking, they are very popular: They have almost 2,500 Amazon reviews and a 4.4 rating. I came across them in The Strategist and was surprised to find out they had such a rabid fan base.

They're chunky and a little bit ugly but in a cool sort of way that reminds me of Everlane and Crocs at the same time. The sandals are so comfortable you may not even want to take them off when you're no longer poolside. Unlike regular flip flops, there's traction at the bottom to prevent slipping.

"I use [these shoes] in the sauna, steam room, and shower," writes one Amazon customer. "I do not know what the product quality consistency is like since I have only ordered one pair. However, given how frequently I have used them, and what I use them for, I find them to be durable, comfortable, and much better than some other types and brands of shower shoes."

Pros: Water-resistant for shower or pool, able to float, vented for comfort in the heat

Cons: Not the most attractive shoe

Buy the Vertico Shower and Pool Sandals on Amazon from $12.99 and up

The best affordable flip flops

Old Navy flip flops come in a rainbow of colors that go with every summertime outfit, from sundresses to cutoff shorts.

If you've never owned a pair of Old Navy flip flops, we probably didn't go to high school together. I strongly associate their simple designs and rainbow colors with days spent at the public pool or the mall with my friends.

The signature thing about Old Navy flip flops is that they are cheap — not affordable or inexpensive, but cheap. Most pairs are normally $3.99 when not on sale, but they are seemingly always discounted. If you like the look of Havaianas but don't want to spend a lot of money (especially if they may become sand-logged), check out the Old Navy Classic Flip Flops.

They come in men's and women's sizes that look the same aside from minor adjustments to accommodate different foot shapes. Old Navy offers the Classic style in tons of colors, including some fun pastels. The women's version has nearly 15,000 online reviews on the Old Navy website and a 4.7 rating.

"I love Old Navy flip flops," writes a customer. "They are durable and super comfortable. I literally have a pair that I have had for at least 5 years. And if you can catch the $1 flip flop sale it's a major score. Very good quality for such a low price!!!"

Of course, being so cheap, you sacrifice some quality and comfort. Don't be surprised if you have to replace one each year. But, Inside Picks Guides Editor Les Shu wears the Men's Old Navy Classic flips flops to the gym showers regularly, and find that they hold up nicely. He does recommend actively replacing them often if you do use them for the gym, to prevent bacteria buildup.

Pros: Cute, less than $5, perfect for the beach or casual wear

Cons: Not as comfortable as flip flops with cushioned insoles

Buy the women's Old Navy Classic Flip Flops for $2.50

Buy the men's Old Navy Classic Flip Flops from $3.99

The best stylish flip flops

Hari Mari makes flip flops that even people who hate flip flops will love because of the luxe materials and sleek, sporty design.

I don't have the kind of life that requires me to own "boat-safe" shoes, but Hari Mari makes me wish I did. "Boat safe" in this case essentially means nonslip, so they're suitable for just about any slick terrain. These are flip flops for everyone, even people who don't normally wear flip flops. They're cute and sporty, but more attractive than your average pair.

What really makes Hari Mari flip flops unique is the memory foam toe, designed to minimize the awful chafing you get from other thong sandals. It's described by the brand as "a formidable cylinder of memory foam encased in soft nylon to help grip toes, reduce abrasion and do away with painful break-in periods."

The brand has been featured by Fast Company and Insider Picks writer Amir Ismael recommends the Fields Flip Flop. At $60, they're on the pricier side, but many of the styles have 5-star ratings on Zappos and cost less than $40.

"This is an amazing leather flip-flop that just keeps getting better every day!" says one Fields Flip Flop reviewer on Zappos, "If they get wet they dry beautifully. They wear perfectly. These are the flip-flops I look to put on every day!"

Pros: Made of luxurious materials like nubuck leather, memory foam toe, boat-safe sole

Cons: Expensive

The best comfortable flip flops

Oofos' sandals are beyond comfortable, machine washable, and come in several colors and styles.

Oofos reinvented the flip flop to make the most comfortable sandals we've tried. The special foam is built to absorb even more shock that your average sports shoe.

Oofos specifically markets these sandals as recovery shoes for people who need more arch support and impact absorption than others. Many athletes and people with feet problems swear by them.

I discovered Oofos sandals at a shoe store about five years ago and I've been wearing them at the beach, around the house, and while traveling ever since. These flip flops offer stability, comfort, and durability.

They are formed to fit the curve of your arch, so Oofos' sandals offer much more support than your average pair of flip flops. They absorb impact and they don't move up and down as you walk, either.

I've bought Oofos for a few different family members and they're all converts. Even though the sandals are a bit pricey, they are worth it because they will last and last. You can even machine wash or hose them down after a day on the beach to get rid of all the sand they pick up.

They may not be the most beautiful sandals you'll own, but they sure will be the most comfortable. — Malarie Gokey

Pros: Comfy, machine washable, absorb impact, they float

Cons: Pricey, not that attractive

11 tips and tricks for avoiding duds and finding the perfect vacation spot on Airbnb

Airbnb Louvre

  • Airbnb is one of the most popular ways to see the world, but there are lots of details to consider before booking with the site.
  • These tips can help you avoid a mediocre experience with Airbnb so you can achieve true vacation nirvana.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

I use Airbnb all the time when I travel or go on vacation.

Hotel rooms can be convenient and reliable, but I often find that booking a vacation home through Airbnb is cheaper, offers you more space, and is a little more fun to boot. You often get a better feel for the local flavor by choosing to live in a home in the area, rather than a standardized hotel room.

I just got back from my honeymoon this past week. We were gone for two weeks, and visited four different cities in Europe, staying in accommodations exclusively through Airbnb. Some of the Airbnbs were better than anything we could've gotten in a hotel; others fell short of our expectations. But there was a lot that I learned through this experience and others, that I will definitely consider for the next time I use Airbnb.

Here are my 11 top tips and tricks for using Airbnb.

SEE ALSO: The Reddit starter pack: These are the 41 best subreddits everyone should follow

Book in advance.

Booking earlier means you'll have more options in any given location you choose to visit, and prices are usually lower than when you book closer to the date.

This is especially true of popular cities and locations.

When my wife and I booked our trip Venice as part of our honeymoon, for instance, we were looking at significantly more expensive options because we only booked about a month in advance. Thankfully, we found a cheaper option, which leads me to my next tip.

Sometimes, it's worth taking a chance on a newbie.

People like booking places that have been heavily reviewed by other people. It means that other people came to this Airbnb and didn't die, which is a good thing!

Still, you might be surprised if you ignore the number of reviews attached to any given listing, and take a chance on a newbie based on their photos and listed accommodations.

Back to my Venice story: Since we were only booking a month in advance, and during the start of the city's busy season, we felt like we were only seeing expensive options. But we kept looking and found a brand-new apartment that no one had stayed in yet. The photos looked beautiful, and we would get 20% off for being one of the first to book, so we took a leap of faith.

It ended up being a great decision: This apartment was easily the best one we stayed in during our whole honeymoon.

The term "Superhost" can be deceiving, and doesn't guarantee a quality experience.

We stayed in Modena, Italy, as part of our honeymoon, and chose to stay with a "Superhost."

Airbnb picks "Superhosts" based on just four criteria: They need to have had at least 10 people stay in their place over the past year, they need a 4.8 rating or higher from at least 50% of the people who stay in their place, they need zero cancellations over the last year, and they need to respond to 90% of new messages within 24 hours.

In other words, being a Superhost doesn't speak to the quality of the apartment. Our Modena apartment was easily our least favorite accommodation during our honeymoon: It was more flights of stairs than advertised, the apartment wasn't very clean, had no soap, shampoo, or cleaning tools like paper towels, and the apartment smelled like sulfur at times (more on that later).

Study a listing's photos carefully.

When picking an Airbnb, it's really important to pay close attention to the photos.

Sometimes you'll notice inconsistencies, or the same piece of furniture in two different photos — this may mean that the owner is taking different angles of their space to make it appear bigger. On more than one occasion, we found we were looking at a studio listing by noticing that the kitchen and bedroom photos shared the same space.

Also be sure to note the decor, and whether or not it gets sunlight. These things may affect you more than you'd think during your vacation.

Pick a place that's close to attractions, or places you plan on frequenting during your trip.

Cities can be deceivingly large. Paris, for instance, is way bigger than you think!

If you know you want to see certain sights in a city, or be close to major shopping or restaurant centers, try to look for an Airbnb that will be close by. Remember: You want to spend less time traveling to your various destinations, and more time enjoying them.

Airbnb will recommend listings for you, but they won't always be relevant.

When we were looking at places to stay in Venice, for instance, much of what Airbnb recommended was actually off the main island upon closer inspection. We're so glad we didn't go with what Airbnb recommended, because staying within Venice was a big part why our experience was so magical.

The same thing happened when we looked at Paris listings: Much of what Airbnb recommended was on the fringes of the city, and at least an hour of walking away from the big attractions.

If things aren’t clear on the listing, just ask the owner a question by sending them a message through Airbnb. They’ll almost always pre-approve you, giving you a few days to decide before you need to book.

Before booking for our honeymoon, we asked apartment owners about elevators, flights of stairs, and air conditioning. Owners got back to us pretty quickly, and pre-approved us so we didn't have to rush into a decision.

If the check-out time isn’t ideal, you can usually ask the host if they’ll accommodate.

We had to catch trains and flights at various times over our honeymoon, but we didn't want to be stuck wandering the city for hours with all our luggage. So we asked our hosts if we could move the check-out times to accommodate for our travel arrangements — sometimes by just an hour, or even a few — and every single one of our hosts was happy to work with us in advance.

This won't be the same for every host, but it doesn't hurt to ask, especially if it makes you trip a little more convenient.

When searching for apartments, be sure to "favorite" your top listings.

After you've favorited your top listings, you can go back and Airbnb will show all of your favorites on a map. This way, you can compare the locations of your favorite apartments with the locations of your top attractions.

For instance, my wife and I created a separate Google Map for the attractions we wanted to see in each city during our honeymoon, and compared that map to our Airbnb map of our favorite listings to help us choose where we'd stay.

Toiletries vary wildly from one place to another.

Some Airbnbs will have so much soap and shampoo, you'll feel like you're at a spa.

Others, not so much.

Sometimes a place won't have paper towels or even the basics of cooking, despite having a kitchen. One place didn't have salt, for instance, or oil or vinegar to cook with.

You can ask hosts about this sort of stuff before you book, but a lot of places will remember to include these essentials. I'd just recommend noting what the apartment is missing when you arrive, so you can either inform the owner in that moment, or after your Airbnb experience when it comes time to leave them a review. (You can also send the owner a private message during this time with tips on what could be improved so you don't have to shame them publicly.)

Smell is really important! When reading through reviews on a listing, be on the lookout for stink warnings.

Over our honeymoon, two of the four Airbnbs we stayed in (50%!) had a foul odor to them for at least part of the time we were there.

In Modena, Italy, we noticed a foul garbage-like smell that would occasionally waft through the apartment. We re-checked the reviews on that Airbnb listing, and found that a handful of older reviews noted this bad smell caused by the sewage outside. We simply weren't thinking about the apartment's smell while reading reviews, and missed these people's warnings.

Another apartment we stayed in had a bathroom that was recently renovated, and smelled like sulfur at night, or when it was raining. The owner chalked it up to the tide outside, but it was pretty unpleasant to constantly deal with.

the best beach toys for all ages

  • Going to the beach is always tons of fun, but sitting there in the sun can get dull after the first hour or two. A selection of great beach toys ensures your waterside outing is exciting and enjoyable all day long.
  • Spikeball is our top pick for the best beach toy becomes it's an engaging, action-packed game that's easy to learn and that can be played by kids and adults alike.

When you imagine a beach, you probably think of equal parts relaxation and fun. You likely picture kids frolicking about while adults stretch out and relax. In short, the modern conception of the beach is as an idyllic place to be sought out and enjoyed.

But it wasn't always so. In fact, up until the later decades of the 18th century, beaches were generally avoided when possible, used only as necessary for maritime purposes such as launching or retrieving boats, harvesting seafood, and so forth. A new interest in the restorative benefits of fresh air inspired by the ever-more choked air of industrializing cities paired with the ease of travel offered by trains and improved roadways led to a gradual changing of opinions about the beach. Over the course of the 19th Century, the seaside changed from a vaguely ominous swath of sand to be avoided to the beloved vacation destination we think of today.

What's better than a day at the beach? A day at the beach with fun stuff to do.

If you showed up to the beach empty handed and sat on the sand staring at the water all day, that wouldn't be much fun. It's really the items we bring along with us that makes a beach day a success, and that goes for the basics like a towel and an umbrella to the common diversions like a book or some music to the great beach toys that can make a seaside sojourn truly enjoyable.

Whether it's you and the kids or you and the crew headed to the beach this summer, we've assembled a list of some of the best beach toys for ensuring you have a great time. What you won't find here is badminton because it's impossible or those giant inflatable balls you can get inside of because they're begging for personal injury. What you will find are a few high-energy beach games, an exciting but slow-paced option, the best water gun I've ever used, and some things for the kids, too.

Here are the best beach toys you can buy:

The best beach toy overall

Spikeball has all the energy and excitement of a game of volleyball without the need for a large net and huge piece of beach real estate.

The first time I played Spikeball, frankly, it wasn't much fun. But the second time I played, which was about five minutes later, I actually understood the mechanics of the game a bit, and I enjoyed myself. Within a few more rounds, my friends and I were spiking that ball with zeal and having a good ol' time and a decent workout, no less.

The object of this game is basically the same as that of a volleyball match. One team has to work together using a limited number of touches to get the ball bounced off a circular net and then ideally onto the ground without the other team successfully taking control of the ball and bouncing it right back. Got it? To paraphrase, instead of tapping the ball over a volleyball net, you bounce it off the Spikeball net to shift play to your opponents.

The best thing about Spikeball is the compact, portable nature of the set used in play. You can pack it down small enough to carry under one arm, yet a high-intensity game could see people running far and wide and even making jumping and diving plays. The second best thing about it is that you can also play a more casual, less intense round simply by not hitting the ball so hard.

With more than 200 reviews posted on Amazon at the time of this writing, Spikeball has a 4.4-star average rating. One customer calls it a "reverse/upside-down volleyball" game that's "super fun for the beach."

Pros: Compact and portable set, enjoyable way to exercise, great for many ages

Cons: Requires moderate fitness and agility

The best beach toy for kids

For kids ages 0 to 4 or even a bit older, you really can't beat a great set of sand toys, and the Melissa & Doug Sunny Patch Seaside Sidekicks Sand Baking Set is certainly that.

My son started enjoying sand play when he was 7-months-old. And though the way in which he engages with the sand has changed in the ensuing four years, he still loves using sand toys when playing at the beach. Now he's trying to create trenches that channel water toward a reservoir instead of idly scooping and dumping, but sand play is sand play.

The Melissa & Doug Sunny Patch Seaside Sidekicks Sand Baking Set is a low-cost beach toy set that has all basic elements a kid needs for enjoying the endless supply of play material found there on the beach. It has the different sizes of scoop, a little spoon, a sand whisk, a sifter, and a larger bucket with handles.

Whether pretending to cook, working on a structure, or simply digging and pouring, young kids will love this set. Just make sure they don't eat too much sand with that spoon.

Hundreds of Amazon customers have reviewed this sand toy set online, and they have given it a 4.5-star average rating. One reviewer calls it "very sturdy" and "absolutely perfect for" younger kids to enjoy at the beach. Others also report their kids using the toys at water tables or in the pool.

Pros: Great variety of toys, good for babies and toddlers alike, low price point

Cons: Sifter lid does not fit bucket well

The best water gun

The Stream Machine TL-600 Water Launcher is a low-cost, high-powered water cannon that blasts water dozens of yards across the beach, pool, or backyard.

The simplest effective design is always the best design possible, and it doesn't get much simpler than the design of the Stream Machine TL-600 Water Launcher.

You stick the muzzle of this powerful water gun down into some water — be it a bucket, a pool, the Indian Ocean, or whatever — and pull back on the handle. Then you point the thing at your "foe" and push the handle forward again as hard as you can, blasting that nemesis with a super-powered jet of water. With enough effort and decent arm strength, you can send a stream of water arcing more than 70 feet away.

Unlike with a Super Soaker, these water launchers are quick to load and fire, no prep work of pumping required. And unlike fancier multi-component and/or electric water guns, they are pretty hard to break even when treated roughly. Also, as a Stream Machine TL-600 Water Launcher costs less than $15, you can always just replace one that finally gives out.

One word of caution: Watch out for kids and for anyone's eyes, because these water launchers create enough pressure to cause serious discomfort and discontent, if not an actual minor injury.

Pros: Powerful long-range stream, easy to use, cheap yet durable

Cons: Can cause minor eye injuries if used improperly

The best low-impact beach game

You can play a large-than-life game of Jenga with the Yard Games Giant Tumbling Timbers set for tons of fun without too much exercise.

Have you ever noticed that most adult beach toys are basically some variation of tossing or bouncing one object at a different object? Whether it's cornhole, volleyball, beach football, bocce, and so forth, most beach games involve throwing stuff around, and lots of them require at least moderately intense physical activity. Ah, but not so with Giant Tumbling Timbers from Yard Games.

This is, of course, just Jenga on a much larger scale, but the huge size of this set not only makes it a great outdoor activity, but it also increases both the level of challenge and excitement without making this a physically taxing game.

Kids above the age of seven or eight will love playing with this set as will adults of any age. Just watch out for smaller folks when it looks like the tower will soon tumble down because a wooden block to the head is a surefire way to ruin an otherwise great day at the beach.

The Yard Games Giant Tumbling Timbers has hundreds of reviews and a fine 4.5-star average rating on Amazon, with a customer named Tina calling this "fun full-sized game... exactly what [she] was looking for" for family fun.

A lady named Heather said it was great for "kids and adults" alike. Other did note the rather steep price tag, but for the record, the Jenga-branded option costs fifty bucks more!

Pros: Low-intensity fun, great for various ages, fun for the beach or use in the yard

Cons: Injury risk from falling blocks

Buy a Yard Games Giant Tumbling Timbers set on Amazon for $79 (originally $99.99)

The best frisbee beach game

A good game of Kan Jam involves accurate throws, aggressive defense, and usually a lot of laughs.

Tossing a frisbee back and forth is lots of fun, and people have been enjoying these classic toys for the better part of a century now. But simply throwing and catching a flying disc grows boring after a while, so spice things up with the Kan Jam Ultimate Disc Game.

Kan Jam is enjoyable because it still relies on the basics of accurate frisbee tossing, yet with the added excitement of playing with a teammate and against opponents.

Your partner can help bounce your tossed frisbee into the top of the large plastic cylinder (the "kan") that serves as a goal, or you can earn double points by getting the disc into a slot on the front of the goal. But beware! Your opponents can knock the disc aside, robbing you of your sweet, sweet points but increasing the challenge and excitement.

Or you can play without the intervention of the other team to make things a bit less challenging. And you can also enjoy a Kan Jam set solo by challenging yourself to improve your accuracy.

I've spent hours playing Kan Jam over the years, and my only complaint about the game is that other people seem to get the frisbee into the goal more often than I do, but that's probably more my issue than a design thing, come to think of it.

A write up from RunnerClick called Kan Jam a great "family friendly" game that "encourages physical activity" and was "made in the USA."

Pros: Fun team play game, ideal for the beach or the backyard, made in America

Cons: Frustrating for some less-than-great throwers

Buy a Kan Jam Ultimate Disc Game set on Amazon for $39.65

The best beach kite

The Singare Octopus Kite is charming to watch up there in the skies with it's big googly eyes and colorful streamers, plus, it's easy to get it aloft and keep it there.

The beach is the perfect place to fly a kite what with the open expanse of terrain for running about and with reliable breezes coming in off the water. Kites are great fun for all ages, too, making them a perfect toy for use during family trips to the shore. But a kite is no fun for anyone of any age if you can't get the damn thing airborne, which is all too common a problem with all too many kite designs.

The Singare Octopus Kite is ready to use right out of the bag, no assembly required, thus removing the first obstacle many people have to successful kite flight: improper construction. The large, lightweight kites catch the breeze with ease and soar high with minimal need for control input from down below.

Thanks to the 200-foot line included with each kite, you can send your colorful octopus high in the sky. They remain easy to see even at altitude thanks to multiple bright streamers that stretch out nearly eight feet behind the "body" of the kite.

With dozens of reviews posted, Amazon shoppers have awarded the Singare Octopus Kite a high-flying 4.4-star average rating. One buyer speaks for many when he calls them "super easy to fly" and "not too hard for a four-year-old" to fly yet still fun for his eight-year-old son, not to mention himself, the adult.

Pros: Easy to launch, two kites come with purchase, long line and handle included

Cons: Cheap materials but offset by cheap price

Buy a pair of Singare Octopus Kites on Amazon for $15.77

The best beach toys for playing in the sand

The Green Toys Sand Play Set comes with everything you need to build a sandcastle.

The Green Toys Sand Play Set is small and doesn't come with a whole lot, but it probably has the best chance of lasting a season out of any plastic beach toy set we could find, and these are, after all, the essentials.

Really, apart from maybe a Kindle what else does a child or an adult really need for entertainment at the beach? Made from BPA-free recycled plastics, the kit includes bucket with a sturdy rope handle that won't break, a shovel, a rake, and a sandcastle mold, which is all it takes to build the beach fortress of your wildest dreams.

Sure, you could buy a twenty-odd set for the same price, but what's the point? The plastic will be of low quality, and the small pieces have a good chance of finding their way home. — Owen Burke

Pros: Well made, made from recycled plastic, BPA-free, sandcastle building essentials

Cons: Pricey, not many pieces

The "Western White House" is back on the market, this time with another significant price cut.

The 5.5-acre Orange County estate — also known as La Casa Pacifica — is listed for $57.5 million. Like many past presidential retreats, the property was used by former President Richard Nixon for both social gatherings and political business.

The home is just one of several real-estate price cuts we've seen in the past year. Business Insider's Brittany Fowler previously reported the mansion was first listed for $75 million in 2015; two years later Dennis Green reported the list price had dropped over $11 million. Rob Giem of Compass and Linda May of Hilton & Hyland share the latest listing.

Former President Nixon's former abode joins other "White Houses" on the market; though it wasn't owned by an American president, a luxury home in New Jersey is known as the "White House of Englewood" due to its exterior color and regal interior. The property is now listed for 75% off its original sticker price.

Roku remote

  • You can do more than simply play and pause video with your Roku remote.
  • Depending on what model of remote you have, you can use a Roku remote to control playback or search for content with voice commands, play games, and more.
  • Most remotes can use a Private Listening feature to watch and listen to content whenever your environment isn't conducive to watching audible programming, such as late at night.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

The humble Roku remote is packed with features to improve your streaming experience.

From one-touch channel launch to motion control for casual gaming, your remote can do a lot.

Remote models vary slightly depending on the Roku streaming device they accompany so you may opt to use the Roku mobile app instead.

Here are seven ways you can use the Roku remote to enhance your Roku experience:

SEE ALSO: The best streaming sticks and boxes you can buy

Organize installed channel apps

Roku channel apps are displayed in the order they were installed, but you don't have to leave them this way. You can reorganize channels using the remote.

Select a channel you want to move and click the * star button. Choose the option to "Move Channel." Use the remote's arrow keys to position the channel app where you like on your screen.

Quick launch popular services with one button

Roku remotes for newer devices have a set of quick launch buttons. A single button press launches a channel. Button options vary slightly by Roku model, but may include Netflix, Amazon Video, Sling, Hulu, and more. As long as you have the channel you select installed, it will immediately open.

Use private listening

Newer Roku models, above Roku 2, have a Private Listening feature that allows you to listen to your favorite shows when the rest of the house is quiet. You can listen using a Roku Enhanced Remote with a headphone jack. The feature must be enabled on your Roku device before you can take advantage of it on your Enhanced Remote.

Use voice commands

Some Roku remote models support voice commands. You can search for your favorite TV shows and movies, as well as issue commands to launch channels and control playback. Voice commands on Roku are similar to those available on popular smart speakers. You can control the playback of video and audio content with voice commands.

On remotes that support voice commands, press and hold the microphone or magnifying glass button to get started. You can use actions such as search, find, look, play, and show when you want the device to search and play content. Some example commands include: "Show me documentaries," "Find 'Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure,'" "Show me Keanu Reeves films," or "Play 'Friends' on Netflix."

Voice commands also let you issue instructions you would normally use a remote button to accomplish, such as "Ok," "stop," and "cancel". Voice commands such as "pause," "rewind," and "next" can be used to control video playback and pause. You can even control closed caption display with "turn on closed captioning" and "hide the captions" commands.

Turn on the TV and control the volume

Some Roku remote models have a power button at the top that, when pressed, can power on your TV. These remotes also have controls on the side that let you control the television's volume. Private listening is also available on some Roku remotes that let you control your TV power and volume.

Some TVs include a function that lets you power them on by pressing any button on any remote. If this functionality is available on your TV, the feature can be toggled on or off in your TV's settings menu. The standard Roku remote can turn on TVs with this function. Other Roku remote models let you control the TV's volume as well as power it on and off.

Use your mobile device as a Roku remote

The Roku mobile app has a handy remote feature that allows you to do all the things you can do with a standard IR remote, with some extras such as support for voice commands and private listening. The Roku mobile app can also be used to install new channel apps.

Play games

Use your remote to play casual games right from your Roku device. You can enjoy Roku versions of a few retro games such as Tetris, Snake, Galaga, and Pac-man. Roku even has a dedicated gaming remote that includes special gaming buttons along with voice command and private listening support — unfortunately, it only works with older Roku models. You can find games in the Roku Channel Store. Games can be added just like other Roku channel apps.

The best makeup primers you can buy

the best makeup primers

  • Makeup primer is one of those steps you might be tempted to skip, but you'll be happier with your foundation application if you don't.
  • It can help make your makeup apply more smoothly and last longer, and depending on the formula, can also help mattify and decrease the appearance of large pores.
  • Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer is our top pick because it gives skin a velvety smooth finish to help base products glide on and stay in place all day long.

Primer like a gimmick, but I promise it isn't. The step adds a cumulative 30 seconds to your routine but makes a world of difference in your makeup application whether you wear foundation or not.

But there are so many options out there. Choosing a primer can quickly become overwhelming if you're wandering around the beauty aisle unprepared. There are ones that mattify, hydrate, illuminate, blur pores, and more. How can you ever pick just one?

There are two important things to keep in mind when shopping for a primer — your skin type and base makeup preferences. People with oily skin might gravitate toward mattifying or pore-blurring primers, while those with dry skin might prefer hydrating or radiant primers. Even those who don't wear foundation can benefit from primer to keep other products like eyeshadow in place, especially if your makeup does the Slip 'N Slide before your first cup of coffee.

This breakdown of the best makeup primers I've personally tested will help you narrow down the sea of options to find your one perfect pick.

Here are the best makeup primers you can buy in 2019:

Updated on 5/24/2019 by Jada Wong: Updated links, prices, recategorized Milk Makeup Blur Stick as our Best Solid Primer, and swapped in Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat Blur Primer as our Best Blurring Primer.

The best makeup primer overall

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer is a blockbuster beauty product that blurs imperfections and helps you achieve a smooth, long-lasting makeup application.

I can't stand when products I normally love pill up because of something I applied underneath, and the cult-favorite Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer is designed to prevent exactly that scenario.

It's a silky smooth white liquid that quickly becomes transparent as you work it into the skin. This primer creates an even base on which to blend your foundation and concealer by minimizing the appearance of redness, pores, and imperfections. The formula contains broad spectrum SPF 15 for some added sun protection, though I and your dermatologist, most likely would caution against using makeup as your primary sunscreen.

My skin feels super soft after applying Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer and I find that my makeup lasts all day without settling into fine lines. It's oil- and fragrance-free, and made without parabens or sulfates, so the formula is not irritating or greasy on my sensitive skin. Thanks to the airy texture, I find it leaves me matte without that dehydrated effect. Hourglass is also one of my all-time favorite beauty brands, and every single product I've tried, including this one, blends seamlessly and leaves me looking flawless but not "makeup-y."

This is one of the most universally beloved primers on the market. It's been mentioned by countless publications including Rank and Style, Allure, and Byrdie, and has more than 6,800 reviews and a 4.4 rating on the platform Influenster and 3,900+ 5-star reviews on Sephora.

Pros: Oil and fragrance-free, suitable for all skin types

Cons: Expensive

The best radiant primer

Don't let the intense luminosity scare you off — Becca Backlight Priming Filter gives you a gorgeous, natural glow that shines through foundation.

I don't know what kind of fairy dust they're working with at Becca Cosmetics HQ but these people know about glow.

The Becca Backlight Priming Filter is the first primer I ever wanted to write poetry about. It makes my complexion look healthy and bright, whether worn alone or under foundation or tinted moisturizer. Unlike with some of our other picks though, this one didn't extend my foundation wear-time.

I tend to gravitate toward this primer in the winter when my skin is feeling dull or on occasions when I'm wearing fuller coverage foundation. Just one pump blurs imperfections and imparts the most natural champagne-colored luminosity to the skin.

The radiance comes from Filtering Luminescent Pearls that diffuse light and add subtle shimmer — not glitter. The formula also contains nourishing vitamin E.

With a 4.2 star rating on Sephora based on 1,300+ reviews, this is a fan-favorite primer that has been featured on Best Products, Cosmopolitan UK, Vogue UK, and Women's Health, among other publications.

Pros: Beautiful natural glow, can be worn alone or with foundation, cruelty-free, paraben-free

Cons: Has a strong scent, doesn't extend foundation wear-time

The best moisturizing primer

Quench your thirst with the hydrating, coconut water-infused Too Faced Hangover Rx Replenishing Face Primer.

Dry patches and overall dehydration are the bane of anyone's existence. Enter Too Faced Hangover Rx Replenishing Face Primer— a super-light moisturizing primer that plumps skin and keeps makeup looking fresh all day.

I reach for this when I'm doing my makeup several hours after applying skin-care products to give my skin an extra shot of moisture. If you have dry skin, you'll probably want to use it on the daily. It's hydrating without being greasy, so you can use it under matte base products without disrupting the finish, though people with oily skin might prefer our mattifying pick more.

Another plus is the travel-friendly packaging. The primer is housed in a flexible tube with a pump on the end. The design prevents spillage in transit and also makes it very difficult to accidentally dispense too much, thus cutting down on waste. The cruelty- and silicone-free formula is packed with coconut water and probiotics to keep your complexion happy.

"New favorite face primer!" writes one Sephora reviewer. "It is the smoothest thing I have ever put on my skin, feels amazing. It is super hydrating and my makeup goes on beautifully and prolongs it so well!" Still not convinced? There are nearly 3,000 other reviews and mentions in Women's Health, Cosmopolitan UK, Women's World, and Best Products.

Pros: Moisturizing, silicone- and cruelty-free, travel-friendly pump packaging

Cons: Strong coconut scent, not ideal for oily skin

Buy the Too Faced Hangover Replenishing Face Primer at Sephora for $34

The best blurring primer

The Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat Blur Primer instantly blurs skin for an almost-airbrushed look and provides a smooth base for makeup.

This is YSL's iconic Touch Éclat in primer form — it gives your complexion a wonderful glow, is versatile to use anywhere on your face, and makes your skin look airbrushed and primed for makeup.

The gel-like formula is made with four oils — corn, apricot, passfloria, and rice bran — to hydrate, mattify, and blur out the appearance of large pores. There are also tiny flecks of golden shimmer for a nice radiance. I didn't find that they made my face look glittery, it's almost like I applied highlighter over my entire face.

To use, you just pump a tiny bit of primer from the bottle (because a little goes a long way, and because this bottle is expensive) and smooth it all over your face. The instructions say to let it set on your skin for 10 seconds before applying base makeup, and both I and reviewers suggest following it closely otherwise the foundation won't go on as smooth.

The Touche Éclat Blur Primer holds a 4.4 out of 5 stars on Sephora with more almost 2,000 reviews, and an even higher 4.6 rating with more than 1,300 reviews on Influenster. — Jada Wong

The best solid primer

The Milk Makeup Blur Stick is a unique solid primer that minimizes the appearance of pores and mattifies the complexion.

If you want a heavy-duty primer but in solid form for portability, look no further than the Milk Makeup Blur Stick. As the name suggests, it blurs pores and imperfections. The solid formula allows for targeted application, so you can place it only where you need it, sort've like a giant glue stick.

I like to use the Milk Makeup Blur Stick on the oily parts of my T-zone and apply a different primer on my drier, rosacea-prone cheeks. The travel-friendly packaging makes it easy to bring on the go for touch-ups — you can even tap it on top of makeup to absorb oil if you get shiny throughout the day.

I love how easy this is to swipe on quickly without making a mess. The instructions recommend warming the product on the back of your hand before you apply to the skin, and I second that because otherwise the product tugs on your skin if you apply directly from the stick.

Like with most Milk products, The Blur Stick is free of silicone, oil, talc, and animal cruelty, and it's also vegan.

Though the Blur Stick sounded gimmicky at first, I was really impressed with the skin-smoothing results. The Sephora reviews are somewhat mixed, resulting in a 3.5-star rating from more than 2,000 reviews, but many shoppers rave about the effects.

"It's not a primer that you can feel is there like others (probably because it's silicone free) but it does keep my makeup in place.," writes one reviewer.

As far as professional reviews go, the Blur Stick has been recommended by editors at Glamour, Fashionista, and Nylon.

Pros: Vegan, cruelty-free, silicone-free, oil-free, portable, non-liquid

Cons: Needs to warm up before applying smoothly
