Roku 4

  • You can't install Kodi on Roku, but you can use your Roku to watch or listen to content from Kodi on another device with the help of screen mirroring.
  • You'll have to enable screen mirroring on your Roku device and the device you're screen mirroring from.
  • Kodi can play media you have saved on your device. It does not contain any content on its own.
  • You can install Kodi on devices running Windows, MacOS, Android, Linux, and Raspberry Pi. The iOS version of Kodi requires a jailbroken device so it may not be suitable for most users.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Kodi is an open source media center that can let you play movies, TV shows, music, and video games. The software originates from an early 2000s project called Xbox Media Center (XBMC) that gave Xbox owners the ability to upload video, pictures, and play music on their game console. Today, the software is available on multiple platforms including Windows, Android, and MacOS.

The official version of Kodi does not contain any content — it's just a media player. You have to add your own media to the platform in order to watch or listen using Kodi. There are many add-ons available to enable playback from a variety of sources. Not all add-ons are supported by the official Kodi development team, so it's best to be cautious about the add-ons you choose to install.

While you can't install Kodi on a Roku device, you can still access your Kodi content on Roku by screen mirroring another device onto a Roku player. You'll need to ready both devices for screen mirroring before you can use Kodi to play your content.

Here's how you can use screen mirroring to use Kodi on Roku.

How to turn on screen mirroring on your Roku

Before you can mirror a device on your Roku, you must enable screen mirroring.

1. From the settings menu, scroll until you find "System." Click OK on your remote to open the System menu.

2. Select Screen Mirroring Mode by clicking OK on your remote.

DSCN3144.JPG

3. Choose the mode you prefer and press OK on your remote. You can choose to allow screen mirroring always, never, or to have the Roku prompt you for permission each time a device tries to use the function.

How to mirror Kodi to Roku through an Android device

Mirroring Kodi from an Android device is a quick process. First, you'll need to ensure screen mirroring is enabled on your Android, then turn it on. Here's how:

1. From the Settings menu, tap "Display," and then "Wireless display."

2. Tap the toggle switch to turn on Wireless Display.

3. Your device will begin searching for available devices equipped with Miracast. Tap to select your Roku device from the available Displays.

4. Launch the Kodi app for Android on your device to use it on Roku.

How to mirror Kodi through other devices

You can install Kodi on Windows, MacOS, Linux, and Raspberry Pi. Windows users can use the wireless projection features built into Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 to mirror Kodi on Roku.

The iOS version of Kodi requires a jailbroken device so it may not be suitable for most users. Linux and Raspberry Pi users may wish to direct connect their devices to the TV using an HDMI cable instead of mirroring the screen to a Roku as these versions of Kodi do not have an out-of-the box feature to quickly enable screen mirroring.

The brand offers a spot treatment and a few different kinds of spot patches and sheet masks, all with the goal of clear skin. All of the products are free of sulfates, parabens, and other questionably toxic ingredients. Plus, the brand is cruelty-free.

A female engineer at Google said the company's reporting system for workplace issues discouraged her from filing a complaint about a male colleague’s disturbing obsession with her feet, leading her to seek psychiatric help (GOOGL, GOOG)

  • A female engineer at Google recently wrote a lengthy post recounting her experience with a coworker who she said had a disturbing obsession with her feet.
  • Lea Coligado — a female engineer on the Google Maps team — said that a man in his 50s stared at her feet for three straight hours on a particular bus ride and later made repeated attempts to gain proximity to her, including moving into the same building in which she worked.
  • Google did not take action against the potential stalking case, she said, because she never filed a formal complaint against the man for fear of retaliation.
  • Coligado's story comes as Google's responses to workplace harassment and other misconduct are in the spotlight.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

A female engineer at Google wrote in a Medium post that the company's reporting system for workplace issues discouraged her from filing a complaint about a male coworker's disturbing obsession with her feet, ultimately leading her to seek psychiatric help, in another example of the tech giant's struggle to adequately address improper internal behavior.

Lea Coligado — a female engineer on the Google Maps team who identifies as Filipina — said that the "white man in his 50s" first took to her feet one night during a three-hour ride home on one of the company's chartered shuttle buses.

"I thought, There's no way this dude's been staring at my feet this long!" Coligado wrote. "But an adherent to rigorous testing, I moved my foot to gauge his reaction, and his whole goddamn head moved with it."

Coligado's bizarre tale is written in a sardonic style, replete with swear words and puns ("no one seemed to care that his SOLE objective was my feet"), but her message underscores a serious problem at Google. In the same week that Coligado's Medium post about her experience was making the rounds, Google announced a new internal web portal to make it easier for employees to report harassment.

Coligado wrote that under Google's reporting system for workplace issues, pursuing an investigation would have likely revealed her identity — leaving her susceptible to retaliation from the man. While she contemplated taking formal action, the man made repeated attempts to gain proximity to her, including sitting next to her in the cafeteria and even moving into the same building in which she worked.

Google did not take action against the potential stalking case, she said, because she never filed a formal complaint. Ultimately, Coligado said her mental health spiraled downward and so too did her performance at work.

Google Shuttle Bus

Coligado said that her story about the "foot guy" is the first installment in a forthcoming series of posts she's calling, "The Chronicles of the Coding Curmudgeon."

"Each piece is dedicated to a man who has stalked me, harassed me, or otherwise made me uncomfortable here," Coligado wrote. "I've reported 3 men for sexual harassment in my 2 years at Google! Can I get a 'Hell yeah!' for more content?!?!"

Google did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment on the matter.

On Thursday, amid mounting pressure to address its process for employee-related incidents, Google said it was launching a new internal portal for employees to report issues, such as harassment, discrimination, and retaliation. A Google spokesperson told Business Insider on Thursday that employees had said previous methods of reporting workplace issues were complicated and opaque.

Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, and Jeff Bezos: Here's how old the founders of 23 tech giants were when they started their first companies

  • Mark Zuckerberg, Evan Spiegel, and the two Google cofounders were all already millionaires before they turned 30.
  • Although those tech founders saw massive success from their first companies, other major tech players didn't find wealth and fame until their second or third attempts at launching ventures.
  • These are the ages of 23 tech founders when they started their first companies.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

For tech founders like Elon Musk and Jack Dorsey, it took a couple attempts to start the company that would turn them into industry visionaries and make them worth billions of dollars.

The founders of Tesla and Twitter, respectively, experienced only minor successes with their first tech ventures at a young age. It took them, and others, a couple of tries before landing on ideas that caught fire and became big names in the tech industry.

Although it's often the stories of young college dropouts like Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg that get the most attention, not all heads of tech companies found success at such a young age. While many big names in tech have already gained their first million in their 20s, others like Oracle founder Larry Ellison didn't come into their wealth until their 30s or later.

These are the ages that 23 of the most successful tech founders launched their first companies at:

Photos reveal what it looks like to get the measles when there are no vaccines

what is measles measles vaccine

  • Nearly 700 measles cases have been reported in the US this year, with the bulk of cases in New York and Washington states. That's the highest number of US cases in 25 years.
  • The measles vaccine was developed in the early 1960s, and measles was declared eliminated from the US in 2000.
  • When there are enough vaccinated people in a population, the measles virus doesn't have a chance to spread. But experts worry that as more kids forgo vaccines, the virus could grab a "foothold" in the country once again.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

The measles is back. The extremely contagious virus is circulating once again across the US, especially in pockets of the country where unvaccinated people are clustered and at risk.

With nearly 700 cases reported so far this year— the highest total in 25 years — the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is warning that "the longer these outbreaks continue, the greater the chance measles will again get a sustained foothold in the United States."

Before the invention of the measles vaccine in the early 1960s, the measles killed 400 to 500 people in the US every year. Public health experts are now concerned that the illness could turn deadly once again (though no US deaths have been reported so far this year).

Here's a look back at what the measles really looks like when people are not vaccinated.

SEE ALSO: From autism risks to mercury poisoning, here are 10 lies anti-vaxxers are spreading about the measles vaccine

The measles virus is extremely contagious: 90% of unprotected people who are exposed will get the infection.

The measles virus can live for two hours on surfaces outside the body, infecting other people long after a sick person has left the room. Then it takes about seven to 14 days for the first symptoms to show up.

Some of the first indications someone has the measles look much like the flu: infected people can get a cough, low-grade fever, runny nose, and sore throat.

A child's eyes often start to get red and watery. After three days of being sick, a rash begins to break out on the face and neck, then spreads to the body.

"Measles is not a harmless childhood illness, but a highly contagious, potentially life-threatening disease," US Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said in a statement on Wednesday.

People with the measles may be sensitive to light, and about one in every 1,000 who catch the disease will die.

Dr. Robert Amler, dean of New York Medical College, recently told Business Insider that the question he wants to ask anti-vaxxers is: "Do you really want to put your child's life on the line, in the hopes that your child will be saved by medical care?"

Manhattan's skyscrapers are in a vertical race that's transforming the city's skyline. Here are the 11 tallest buildings in NYC right now, ranked

New York City skyline

New York City has long been known for its towering skyscrapers.

Both the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building held the title of world's tallest building at one point in time, but now they're not even among the top five tallest in the city.

We ranked the 11 tallest buildings in New York City right now using data from The Skyscraper Center, a database maintained by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat.

The city's current tallest building is One World Trade Center at 1,776 feet, followed by the luxury residential skyscraper Central Park Tower, which surpassed 432 Park Avenue in March and will reach its full height of 1,550 feet in early spring or late summer. As recently as April 24, 432 Park Avenue was bumped to fourth place after 111 West 57th Street on Billionaires' Row reached its full height of 1,428 feet.

Some buildings on the list were completed years ago, while others only recently reached their full height and are still being finished.

These giants may not hold their current spots in the ranking for much longer. In Midtown and elsewhere in Manhattan, supertall skyscrapers are sprouting up every day that will join the ranks of the city's tallest (and the world's) within the next few years.

One Vanderbilt on 42nd Street is expected to be finished in 2021, at which point it will become the fourth-tallest tower in the city at 1,401 feet. And in Lower Manhattan, 45 Broad Street will take over ninth place when it's completed in 2021.

For now, here are the 11 tallest buildings in the city, from The New York Times Tower to the One World Trade Center.

I've been using the Marie Kondo method to pack for trips around the world and it's completely changed how I pack

$

marie kondo konmari netflix tidying

  • Over the last year, I have traveled the world for Business Insider, visiting nearly 20 countries and tons of climates.
  • Since I brought only a carry-on suitcase and a backpack, I had to pack strategically.
  • I found that the best way to pack was to follow famed organizer Marie Kondo's KonMari method: Bring only that which "sparks joy," organize by category, and fold clothes so that they stand upright.
  • I've found that using the KonMari method has helped me reduce stress on the road because I know where everything I need is.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

I remember the first time I heard of Marie Kondo, the famed Japanese organizing consultant who rocketed to fame earlier this year with the hit Netflix series "Tidying Up with Marie Kondo."

Three years ago, I was living in a tiny, 450-square-foot apartment with my partner and we were drowning in our possessions. With no closets and too much stuff, the apartment was always a mess. A friend passed along Kondo's book, "The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up," and while we first started following it ironically, it soon became very serious.

We spent a week asking if every item in our apartment "sparked joy" and ended up filling several garbage bags worth of clothes and possessions that we brought to the local Goodwill. I won't say it magically made our tiny apartment perfectly tidy, but it did make it more organized and livable.

When I decided to leave New York last year to travel the world for Business Insider, I resolved to pack light: only a carry-on suitcase and a backpack.

That, however, was daunting: I had plans to travel through a wide variety of climates and scenarios, from Beijing's frosty early spring to Israel's oppressively hot summer, and scenarios from board room meetings with executives at Chinese tech startups to hiking the Atlas Mountains of Morocco.

As I packed, I continued to turn back to the principles of the KonMari method.

Using the KonMari method to pack for a year of traveling

To start with, I put everything that I was even thinking about packing into one central place and started organizing each item into its category: clothing, outerwear, shoes, work equipment (cameras, recorder, etc), cables and travel adapters, toiletries, and mementos. Then, I went through each category and asked myself the iconic Marie Kondo question: Does this spark joy?

I have to admit that when I asked myself that question, I was always asking myself another question underneath: Does it serve a purpose or function that I need? This is a vital question, particularly when traveling. Malaria pills may not exactly "spark joy," but they keep me healthy when traveling to sub-Saharan Africa.

That second question is useful when it comes to clothes. If a pair of pants that I am bringing "sparks joy" but doesn't serve any particular purpose, it's a reminder to think twice about packing it.

Once I combed through each category, narrowing down what I was bringing, it was time to pack.

Marie Kondo recommends organizing by category and making sure every item has a particular place or home. When I started putting items into my suitcase, I took that advice to heart, both for my carry-on and my backpack.

MarieKondo (2 of 2)

Having a designated place for each type of item is key

I use Away's The Bigger Carry-On, which made it easy for me to put everything in a designated place. I use the right side of the suitcase for clothing, the divider that sits on top for large notebooks and gifts, and the left side for my toiletries, shoes, and larger pieces of equipment like my camera's flash unit and a tripod.

My backpack, Peak Design's 30L Everyday Backpack, also makes it easy for me to put things in a designated place, thanks to its numerous pockets and zippers and its specialized "shelving" system, which divides the bag into three cubbies.

I use the bottom cubby for camera lenses, the middle for my glasses case and a small notebook, and the top cubbie (the largest) for my technology Dopp kit, the Peak Design Field Pouch, and my Fuji X-T3 digital camera.

Each of those spaces, in both my suitcase and my backpack, is further divided into pouches, bags, and packing cubes so I can find and inventory items quickly.

A perfect example is my technology Dopp kit. The kit works like a regular toiletries bag, but for electronic devices. I packed mine with all my travel adapters, cables, chargers, devices, and accessories. Here's what it looks like packed up:

Electronics Dopp Kit

Whenever I need to start work, I whip it out and pull out the cables I need. When I enter a hotel room, I know exactly where to go to get my devices charged. When I get on a plane, I just grab the kit and throw my backpack in the overhead compartment. The ease with which I can find exactly what I need sparks a ton of joy.

I've applied that philosophy throughout my carry-on suitcase and backpack. All of my clothes are in packing cubes — one for t-shirts and button downs, one for pants and shorts, and one for underwear, socks, and lounge-wear. I never had to rifle through my whole bag to find something. I just open the dedicated pouch.

It's the same for my toiletries bag, my specialized equipment bag (i.e. large camera charger, flash accessories, and audio recorder), and my field pouch (which is loaded with earplugs, medications, camera batteries, pens, and a small notebook).

Marie Kondos' tips for folding clothes

The last piece of the Marie Kondo puzzle is how she folds clothes, which is a bit special. Basically, using her special folding method, all of your clothes sit upright in your bag so that it is easy to see what is in your bag and nothing gets wrinkled.

I have to confess that while I think her folding method is effective for maximizing space and protecting your clothing, I get lazy with it. Here's what some of my clothes looked like while I was packing for my recent flight back to New York.

MarieKondo (1 of 2)

Following the KonMari principles made it far easier to pack my bag for long trips — making sure I had what I needed and wanted without overpacking — and far easier to use my bag while traveling. Rather than ripping through my bag for a missing cable or dress sock, I knew exactly where everything was.

That sparked a lot of joy.

Homeownership across America is on the decline for the first time since 2017, and millennials are partially to blame

Millennials are one of the driving forces behind declining homeownership across America.

For the first time in two-plus years, the US homeownership rate has fallen, reported Laura Kusisto of The Wall Street Journal. It decreased from 64.8% in the fourth quarter (near the 65% historic average) to 64.2% in the first quarter, Kusisto reported, citing new data from the US Census Bureau.

While millennials had been fueling the steady growth in homeownership since 2017, they saw "some of the steepest falls," according to Kusisto — the homeownership rate of households headed by someone younger than 35 fell from 36.5% to 35.4%.

In the last six months of 2018, she said, rising mortgage rates, high home prices, and a shortage of starter homes have slowed the housing market. Essentially, an increasingly expensive real estate market hasn't left millennials much choice but to delay homeownership.

Back in 2017, Spencer Rascoff, Zillow's CEO, told Business Insider that "the whole real-estate industry now is characterized by extreme scarcity and inventory."

Two years later and it's still a seller's market, according to Zillow. This causes home prices to shoot up, leaving minimal inventory at the middle and low end of the housing market, Rascoff said.

Read more: Millennials are making 3 key decisions that are wiping out the starter home — and it's changing what homeownership in America looks like

It's an endless cycle; as a result of a limited starter home inventory, millennials are renting longer, Rascoff said.

Homes are 39% more expensive than they were nearly 40 years ago, according to Student Loan Hero. And a report by SmartAsset found that the median-priced home outweighs the median income by so much in some cities that it could take nearly a decade for someone with median income to save for a 20% down payment on a median-priced home.

It's even harder to take out a mortgage for millennials who have student loan debt, which has hit record levels — the national total student debt is over $1.5 trillion and the average student loan debt per graduating student in 2018 who took out loans is $29,800, according to Student Loan Hero.

Fewer 25- to 34-year-olds are also living with a spouse or partner, Business Insider's Akin Oyedele reported, citing the US Census Bureau. The data suggests that milestones, like marriage, that often precipitate buying a home are happening later.

But it's worth noting that while the homeownership rate has fallen, it's about the same as it was a year ago, according to Kusisto.

Kids II rocking sleeper

  • Baby product manufacturer Kids II is recalling thousands of rocking sleepers.
  • Since 2012, the product has been linked to five infant deaths.
  • The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced that the Atlanta-based company will refund customers who purchased the sleeper.
  • Visit Business Insider's 's homepage for more.

Fisher-Price recalled 4.7 million Rock N' Play sleepers on April 12, after the item was linked to over 30 infant deaths. Now, the Consumer Product Safety Commission has labeled a strikingly similar product as unsafe.

The CPSC announced that all models of the Kids II rocking sleepers would be recalled, effective April 26.

"Infant fatalities have occurred in the rocking sleepers after the infants rolled from their back to their stomach while unrestrained, or under other circumstances," the CPSC's release said.

The release said that the product has been linked to five infant fatalities since its 2012 launch. The CPSC estimated that there are approximately 694,000 units of these products out in the market.

Read more: Fisher-Price has recalled its Rock 'n Play product after more than 30 children died, and it raises concerns about all restraint-based incline sleepers

Previous recalls of Kids II products, according to the company's website, include blocks, a Baby Einstein motion activity jumper, and play color blocks.

The baby product retailer's websites indicate that it's had 15 product recalls since 1996. The last recall before the rocking sleeper took place in 2017 and centered around an oball rattle.

The Atlanta-based company Kids II — which operates online under the name Kids 2 — is on the hook to refund owners of these rocking sleepers. Parents who've purchased a rocking sleeper should stop using the product immediately and contact the company for a refund, according to the CPSC.

Fisher-Price's Rock N' Play had similar issues. Over 30 infant deaths were linked to the Rock N' Play after babies rolled from their backs to their sides or stomachs and suffocated.

In June 2018, watchdog group Kids In Danger issued a warning against inclined sleepers noting that infants can get trapped in a position in the sleepers after rolling over.

How to declutter your home, from people who know

organize clutter home

  • Americans are engaged in a frenzy of decluttering, thanks in large part to the Netflix series "Tidying Up with Marie Kondo."
  • If you're trying to get organized, you might want to start small and take your time, according to two decluttering experts we spoke with.
  • They said the best decluttering process for you could depend on your organization style. Here are their best tips for decluttering.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

If you want to go full Marie Kondo and dump all your belongings in the middle of the room at once, have at it.

But, if you're like most people, a more incremental approach to decluttering your house might be more successful.

"We think Marie Kondo has been remarkable," Karen Shinn, co-founder of Toronto-based Downsizing Diva and a member of the National Association of Senior Move Managers, told Business Insider. "We are thrilled to have her on the scene."

But Shinn sees decluttering as a more of a process, not something that can be done in one day. And Lis McKinley, owner of the organization company Let's Make Room, shared her view.

"Unless you know what questions to ask yourself to decide whether you're going to keep something or not, you can get stuck," McKinley told Business Insider.

We asked McKinley and Shinn to share their best advice for decluttering your home.

Here's how you should do it, according to the experts.

DON'T MISS: I moved from New England to San Francisco — here are the 7 things that surprised me most

Know your organizing goal

McKinley asks people to think about their goal for decluttering. Do you want to be able to have people over and entertain more? Are you looking for a sense of peace?

"When they get started, they kind of start to develop a curating muscle, if you will," McKinley said. "People are looking for reasons to hold onto things." Instead, you should ask yourself whether each object supports your goal for your home.

Start small

"Start small. And start with something that's impacting your daily life," McKinley said. "Sometimes taking on something simple like organizing your hanging clothes or organizing one drawer in your dresser can be very motivating because you can see the results quickly."

Take stock of everything you have

"You want to know what you have," McKinley said. She described a recent job for a client where her crew laid out all the clothes in a closet in categories: black pants, blue jeans, white blouses, graphic T-shirts, and so on. The client was able to come in and immediately see what she had and pick the best items in each category to keep.

lightweight suits

  • Traditional wool suits can be very hot and uncomfortable during the spring and summer, but lightweight wool, linen, cotton, and even performance suits can provide you with the comfort you need during warmer weather.
  • We rounded up 7 of our favorite places to buy lightweight suits for spring and summer, including brands like Haspel, Ministry of Supply, Todd Snyder, Indochino, and Bonobos.

When the weather warms up, heavyweight layers like sweaters and flannels get put away in exchange for lighter, more comfortable styles like T-shirts and performance dress shirts. But for men who have to wear a full suit every day of the work week, simply changing the shirt underneath your suit isn't always enough to achieve true comfort.

Let's face it. Traditional wool suits aren't exactly built for comfort. Style and quality oftentimes take precedence, and when it's hot outside, they can be unbearable to wear. Overheating and sweating profusely is never a good feeling or look in the office, so lightweight options are a must-have during the spring and summer.

By choosing a suit that's specifically made for warmer weather, you can pull off your best formal looks without baking in the heat. To help point you in the right direction, we rounded up seven of the best places to shop for lightweight suits, along with our favorite styles.

Between these brands, you'll find suits made of lightweight wool, linen, seersucker, cotton, and performance stretch materials. Whether you're after something that looks like a traditional suit for the office, or a light and airy pastel suit that's distinctly seasonal, you'll find it here.

Indochino

Shop the Indochino Spring Collection now, as low as $299

Our top pick: Chatham Deep Blue suit, $299 (Originally $799) [You save $500]

Indochino is leading the industry in made-to-measure suits that men can buy online. Landing spots in our Best Men's Suits buying guide and our favorite places to buy affordable custom clothing online, we've recommended Indochino extensively  — and its spring 2019 collection is no exception.

The collection includes a variety of suits are that specifically made for warmer weather. While they're still made of 100% merino wool, they're constructed particularly to be lightweight and breathable.

Originally priced at $699 to $799, Indochino suits can be had for as low as $299 with the existing promotion on the site. If you want your more casual spring and summer suits to fit just as well as your favorite custom menswear, then Indochino is the way to go.

Haspel

Shop seersucker and lightweight suits at Haspel now, starting at $595

Our top pick: Cayenne Red Seersucker Suit (Jacket and Pants), $595

In 1908, John Haspel Sr. founded his eponymous menswear brand in New Orleans with the goal of creating clothing that could withstand the southern heat. After observing British men wearing a lightweight and breathable material called seersucker in the warm-weather colonies of India, he decided to create the first seersucker suit. Colonialism aside, it became a hit.

The word seersucker is derived from the Hindi words sheer and shakar, which translates to milk and sugar — two foods that describe the smooth and rough texture of the material's striped pattern.

At Haspel, you'll find a wide variety of suits, pants, and even shorts that feature the iconic pattern and material.

Ministry of Supply

Shop Ministry of Supply suits now, starting at $400 when bundled

Our Top Pick: Ministry of Supply Velocity Suit in Navy, $580

Ministry of Supply is known for re-engineering wardrobe essentials like dress shirts with the input of NASA and MIT scientists, but it was the appearance of its suit in the Guinness Book of World Records that gave it a huge boost in popularity. As the garment worn for the fastest half marathon in a suit, it became clear that the average suit-wearing man could easily achieve comfort and flexibility, even while dressed in formal attire.

Designed to outperform classic wool suits, Ministry of Supply's suits use four-way stretch materials that are lightweight, breathable, moisture-wicking, wrinkle-resistant, and machine washable. I doubt you'll be competing in a foot race every time you wear the suit, but it's more than adequate for staying cool and comfortable during the hustle and bustle of your work days.

The Velocity Suit Jacket and Dress Pants are sold separately for $495 and $185 respectively, but you'll save $100 when you buy them together.

The Kinetic Blazer and Pants are sold separately for $325 and $145 respectively, but you'll save $70 when you buy them together.

Insider Picks writes about products and services to help you navigate when shopping online. Insider Inc. receives a commission from our affiliate partners when you buy through our links, but our reporting and recommendations are always independent and objective.

best cockatiels food

  • Cockatiels require a healthy diet for long-term wellness, but it is your choice whether to feed a nutritionally balanced pellet or seed mix.
  • Whichever you choose, make sure it meets your bird's nutritional requirements and is made with wholesome, natural ingredients.
  • Nutritionally complete and scientifically proven to increase foraging behavior, Lafeber's Classic Nutri-Berries are our top pick for the best cockatiel food overall.

Easily one of the most popular companion birds, the cockatiel is an outgoing, comical breed known for the yellow crest on top of its head through which it displays emotion. Cockatiels are the smallest member of the cockatoo family but still fairly large compared to other pet birds. These birds stand up to 12 inches tall and can live for 15 years or more with proper care.

Proper cockatiel care involves providing your bird with a roomy cage, a healthy diet, and plenty of daily interaction. Wild cockatiels forage on the ground for food and eat a variety of seeds, fruits, and vegetables, and you should mimic that mix with the food you provide for them.

Many bird enthusiasts advocate for the feeding of commercial pellets that are nutritionally balanced but somewhat less appealing to birds than seed. The problem with seed mixes is that many birds pick out only the seeds they like, leading to an unbalanced diet.

As a cockatiel owner, it is your responsibility to make sure your bird's nutritional needs are met. If you choose to feed your cockatiel a seed mix, you may have to supplement his diet to ensure balanced nutrition. If you choose a pelleted diet, you might have to work with your bird to transition him off of seed.

No matter what type of diet you choose, we've assembled a list of our top picks for some of the best cockatiel food to help you make your choice.

Here is the best cockatiel food you can buy in 2019:

Read on in the slides below to check out our top picks.

The best cockatiel food overall

Why you'll love them: Lafeber's Classic Nutri-Berries for Cockatiels are nutritionally complete and scientifically proven to increase foraging behavior in your beloved bird.

The best cockatiel food will be one that provides for your cockatiel's nutritional requirements while also appealing to his tastes and foraging behavior. It should be made with wholesome natural ingredients and formulated for balanced nutrition as well. Our top pick for the best cockatiel food overall is Lafeber's Classic Nutri-Berries for Cockatiels.

These Lafeber's Classic Nutri-Berries are a blend of premium quality ingredients that deliver balanced nutrition similar to pellets but twice the foraging. They come in a unique round shape to enable beak play and exercise, helping to prevent bird boredom which can lead to feather picking and other destructive behaviors.

These Nutri-Berries are made with human-grade, non-GMO ingredients free from artificial additives but loaded with antioxidants and omega fatty acids. They also come with a 100% satisfaction guarantee.

A detailed review from Windy City Parrot praises Lafeber's Nutri-Berries as a premium source of nutrition in a form irresistible to birds, especially foraging birds like cockatiels. In fact, the site mentions a scientific study conducted at the University of California at Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in which birds fed Nutri-Berries were found to spend twice as much time foraging as birds fed commercial pellets.

These Lafeber's Classic Nutri-Berries for Cockatiels have a 4.5-star rating on Amazon with roughly 500 reviews. Bird owners love the foraging-inspiring design and balanced nutrition, though there are comments about some shipments arriving with clumps stuck together and concerns about the product spoiling quickly if exposed to moisture.

Pros: Nutritional balance of pellets with twice the foraging, human-grade non-GMO ingredients, rich in antioxidants and omega fatty acids, no artificial additives, nutritionally complete

Cons: May spoil quickly if exposed to moisture, Nutri-Berries may stick together in large clumps, can make a mess when broken up, significantly more expensive than seed mixes

The best affordable food for cockatiels

Why you'll love it: Affordably priced and formulated to deliver balanced nutrition with every bite, Kaytee Exact Optimal Nutrition Diet is a great affordable food for cockatiels.

Cockatiels may not be the biggest pet birds you'll come across, but they eat significantly more than smaller breeds like budgies and finches. A responsible bird owner will feed their cockatiel a balanced diet which, in most cases, means a seed mix or pellet supplemented with fresh fruits and vegetables. If you're concerned about feeding your cockatiel a high-quality product without going over budget, try Kaytee Exact Optimal Nutrition Diet for Cockatiels.

Kaytee Exact Optimal Nutrition Diet for Cockatiels is our top pick for the best affordable food for cockatiels. Priced under $15, these pellets offer a nutritionally complete daily diet designed to meet the nutritional requirements of cockatiels.

Every nugget is made with healthy natural ingredients and beneficial supplements to ensure 100% consumable nutrition. With no seed hulls to worry about, you'll have less mess and the shape and texture of the nuggets is designed to provide enrichment and mental stimulation.

Dr. Fox Magazine includes several other Kaytee recipes in its picks for the best cockatiel foods, though we chose this for its price and nutritional balance.

This food has a 4.1-star rating on Amazon with more than 150 reviews. Bird owners love the price and how easy it is to feed, though there are some comments about birds refusing the food and some concerns about the pellets being too large.

Pros: Priced under $15, each bite is nutritionally complete, supplemented with nutrients and probiotics, designed to provide enrichment, no seed hulls means less mess

Cons: Some birds have trouble transitioning onto a pelleted diet, new formulation may have pellets too large for some birds

Buy Kaytee Exact Optimal Nutrition Diet for Cockatiels on Amazon for $10.99 (originally $14.78)

Breedsy calls it the best cockatiel seed mix due to the variety of flavors and textures it has to offer. The reviewer also commented on the high omega-3 content that supports your cockatiel's skin and feathers. Squeaks and Nibbles also includes this product in its list of favorite cockatiel seed mixes, noting the use of supplemental probiotics for digestive support.

The Higgins Sunburst Gourmet Blend Cockatiel Food has a 4.3-star rating on Amazon with more than 60 reviews. Bird owners love the variety of seeds and other ingredients, though there are comments about the price being too high for the type of product.

Pros: Premier blend of natural ingredients, variety of flavors and textures, enriched with essential nutrients, balanced omega fatty acid content, supplemented with probiotics

Cons: Seeds may spoil if they get wet, some birds will pick out certain types of seeds, price is higher than for similar products

Elizabeth Warren's plan to forgive student-loan debt is costly, but it could actually pour money into the US economy

  • Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, a 2020 presidential candidate, has proposed erasing a good portion of student-loan debt and providing free public college.
  • The plan was met with mixed reviews online. Some people were angry, saying they had already paid their loans back or chose a different college to avoid debt in the first place, while others praised her move.
  • Josh Bivens, the research director at the left-leaning Economic Policy Institute, told INSIDER in an email that the "short-run macro benefits are neutral to good."
  • Whether voters are fans of the plan or not — and there are plenty who are not — Warren's proposal has put student debt front and center in the 2020 election debate.

Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, a 2020 presidential candidate, has proposed erasing a good portion of student-loan debt and providing free public college.

Her plan, released last week, was met with mixed reviews on Twitter, with some users debating whether it was equitable to people who have already paid off their loans or who selected a different school to avoid education debt.

Meanwhile, some experts think a plan like Warren's could stimulate the US economy.

What the big deal with student debt?

Student debt in the United States ballooned to $1.57 trillion in the last quarter of 2018. It's held by more than 40 million borrowers, according to the US Department of Education. In 2017, the average amount of debt held by a graduate was $28,500.

This can lead debt-holders to postpone hitting some common benchmarks of adulthood (like buying a home), adding to long-term savings, or paying off other debt. CNBC reported that a Bankrate survey published earlier this year found that 73% of respondents had "delayed at least one major life milestone because of their student loan debt."

college graduation

Warren's proposal is to lessen the burden on borrowers

She said it would:

  • Cancel $50,000 of debt for those in households making less than $100,000 per year.
  • Lessen the debt burden for those making between $100,000 and $250,000, canceling $1 of debt for every $3 in income above $100,000 — for example, if you made $160,000, $30,000 of your student-loan debt would be canceled. (No debt cancellation would be offered for those making more than $250,000, the top 5% of earners.)
  • Prevent taxing the canceled debt as income.
  • Make debt-holders with private loans eligible for debt cancellation.
  • Provide tuition-free public college to help future generations stave off student-loan debt.

Warren said in her blog post on Medium that 75% of people with student-loan debt would have it canceled and 95% would see some relief.

Warren also shared an economic analysis from Brandeis University, which found that the plan would have "a substantial impact on student debt forgiveness and would greatly benefit households with the least ability to repay" and those for whom higher education was not a major benefit, as well as help lessen the racial wealth gap.

Additionally, the analysis said Warren's plan could boost the economy.

"It would likely entail consumer-driven economic stimulus, improved credit scores, greater home-buying rates and housing stability, higher college completion rates, and greater business formation," it said.

couple home buying

What the experts say about Warren's proposal

Josh Bivens, the research director at the progressive-leaning Economic Policy Institute, told INSIDER in an email that the plan's "short-run macro benefits are neutral to good."

"This would certainly boost spending by households, who would be wealthier (since debt has been extinguished) and have more disposable income since debt service payments are no longer needed," Bivens wrote. "There is definitely research indicating that student loan payments are holding back home and car purchases — particularly for young adults."

Bivens said that the overall effect, however, would depend on employment numbers and whether the Federal Reserve raises interest rates in response to more spending.

"My sense is that we still have a little bit of daylight between current conditions and unambiguous full employment — so the extra spending really would create some more jobs and income," he said. "And the Fed has signaled that it might wait until inflation shows up in the data before raising rates."

In 2018, the Levy Economics Institute of Bard College published research on one-time student-debt cancellation, finding that "such a proposal could have significant benefits for the U.S. economy."

The researchers said that "student debt cancellation results in an increase in GDP, ranging from $861 billion to about $1,083 billion over the entire period, or on average between $86 billion and $108 billion per year." It would also spur job creation.

However, their research focused on debt cancellation for everyone, unlike Warren's plan, which is income-based.

Not everyone is convinced that Warren's plan is the right way to give the economy a jolt. Beth Akers, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, told CNBC that "we can think of better, more efficient ways" to provide an economic boost, adding that debt forgiveness often benefits mainly high earners.

The economist Ben Stein told Fox Business that the tuition-free-college aspect of the plan was "highly irresponsible."

4th of july parade

What about the cost of this plan? Will it increase the deficit?

Bivens said that canceling all student loans would "boost the deficit by roughly $85 billion per year" for 10 years.

"To put this in some context, it's about a third as costly as the 2017 Trump tax cut, in fiscal terms," he said.

The Levy Economics Institute's research suggested that the effect of canceling all student loans (which Warren's plan would not do) would be "modest," roughly 0.29% 0.37% of gross domestic product.

Brandeis University estimated that Warren's one-time debt-cancellation proposal would cost the government a lump sum of $640 billion, while providing free public college would cost roughly $1.25 trillion over a decade.

Read more:The 30 highest-paying jobs in Texas, where everything's bigger — including the salaries

Warren also put forth a revenue plan for the proposal: "a 2% annual tax on the 75,000 families with $50 million or more in wealth" and 3% for those making more than $1 billion.

Over a decade, this could raise $2.75 trillion, according to Emmanuel Saez and Gabriel Zucman, University of California economists who helped Warren with the proposal.

Student-loan debt is now front and center

Whether voters are fans of the plan or not, Warren's proposal makes student debt a 2020 campaign issue — and one that 57% of millennials under age 30 view as a major problem, a Harvard Kennedy School Institute of Politics survey found.

Bivens said that in his opinion, the economic benefits are not even the best argument for forgiving debt.

"I think the stronger reasons are fairness and (paired with Warren's plan to make college debt-free going forward) a potentially large boost to college availability, and hence a more-educated and productive (let alone happier) workforce in the future," Bivens said.

Insider Picks writes about products and services to help you navigate when shopping online. Insider Inc. receives a commission from our affiliate partners when you buy through our links, but our reporting and recommendations are always independent and objective.

AmazonFresh

  • Grocery shopping can be a real hassle — especially if you live far from grocery stores.
  • Depending on where you live, you can get groceries delivered right to your door with AmazonFresh.
  • Here's how to sign up for the service and how to use it.

You can cross the grocery store off your list of things to do this week, even if you're not crossing off grocery shopping.

What, you say, is this black magic? No magic, but rather the joy of AmazonFresh. The online retailer has brought together ecommerce and fresh produce, and it may just be the best feature that Amazon has to offer. Here's how to sign up for the grocery delivery service.

1. Check to see if AmazonFresh is available where you live

To determine whether or not your zip code qualifies, visit Amazon.com/AmazonFresh. If the service is available, you're in luck! Continue onward.

2. Sign up for your free 30-day trial

In order to entice new subscribers to try out the service, Amazon is offering up a 30-day free trial for new members. Simply select "Start your 30-day free trial," and follow the on-screen instructions. If you enjoy the experience and want to continue past your 30-day trial, AmazonFresh will set you back $14.99 per month.

3. Start shopping locally

Once you've signed up, you can order fresh produce and groceries for delivery either later on the same day or the very next day. You'll be able to browse selections from local shops and supermarkets, buying everything from fresh fish to berries to rolls of paper towels. Amazon has divided its online grocery store into a few easy categories, including Dairy, Deli, Bakery, Fresh Fruit, Meal Kits, and Beverages.

4. Decide how you want your delivery

There are a few options for delivery:

  • Attended delivery is available in all cities where AmazonFresh is available. Simply select a one-hour time slot when you'll be around to receive your groceries. You'll receive items in paper bags rather than the traditional temperature-controlled tote.
  • You could also elect to have your order left with a doorman or security guard. Simply leave instructions when necessary for delivery on the preview order page under delivery instructions.
  • Doorstep Delivery is also available in all cities where AmazonFresh is available. Rather than a one-hour time slot, you'll be selecting a two to three-hour time slot that fits with your schedule. When you get home, you'll find your groceries on your doorstep in a temperature-controlled tote. Note that Doorstep Delivery must involve a doorstep — if your building has a secure entry or limited access, this may not be the best option.
  • If you need to change delivery times or dates, be sure that you do so before the order has started processing. This can be done through Order Details.

5. Pay for your delivery

Depending on what city you live in, there may be a different free shipping threshold. Assuming you've surpassed this threshold (it's generally low enough to be easily surpassed if you're shopping for a week's worth of groceries), then both Attended and Doorstep Delivery are free. If you don't pass the local free shipping threshold before tax, you'll have to pay a $9.99 delivery fee.

6. Alternatively, use AmazonFresh Pickup

This option is available only in select cities, is completely free, and does not require an order minimum. Simply select your groceries and then choose a pickup location as your AmazonFresh account address, then reserve a time slot. Your groceries could be ready for pickup in as little as 30 minutes.

While you may have a bit of trepidation around buying groceries sight unseen, know that Amazon's customer service team makes shopping on AmazonFresh quite seamless. You have a 30-day refund policy at your disposal if you aren't satisfied with the condition of your Fresh items.

The best ballet shoes you can buy

Insider Picks writes about products and services to help you navigate when shopping online. Insider Inc. receives a commission from our affiliate partners when you buy through our links, but our reporting and recommendations are always independent and objective.

best ballet shoes

  • Ballet is excellent exercise for anyone at any age — not just kids and swan-like professionals.
  • Ballet can help you improve your overall strength, posture, flexibility, balance, and cardio endurance while moving to melodious tunes music.
  • Comfortable, flexible, and flattering to the foot, the So Danca Stretch Canvas Split Sole (SD16) shoe is perfect for class and performance.

Having studied ballet for a while, I've tried all types of ballet shoes. Choosing the right soft ballet shoe — not a hard pointe shoe — is important for your comfort and concentration in class. You want to be able to focus on technique and choreography without fussing over footwear.

Ballet shoes are de rigueur for learning and practicing technique in class. Even advanced students and professionals take classes and/or warm up in soft ballet shoes before changing into pointe shoes. There are a myriad of ballet shoe types, so consider these factors when choosing a pair that best suits your needs:

  • Material — leather or canvas: Often required by teachers for kids but also worn by many adults, leather shoes provide resistance to strengthen the foot, ankle, and calf muscles. Although a little pricier than canvas, leather is more durable. Many older students (teens and up) prefer canvas because it's more flexible, sleeker, and less likely to bunch up when you point your foot. Although easier to clean, canvas shoes wear out more quickly if you dance seriously several times per week. Some professional dancers wear leather during class for conditioning and canvas for performance.
  • Sole — full or split: Young children usually must wear shoes with full soles (one piece that extends from heel to toes), but some adults like full-soled shoes for resistance. Most teens and adults, however, prefer shoes with split soles because they allow you to point your foot more easily, resulting in a more flattering look.
  • Top opening — drawstring or elastic: Although conveniently adjustable, a drawstring tie can accidentally be pulled all the way out of the casing. Also, you need to trim excess and tuck ends into the top of the shoe, which some people find uncomfortable. Elastic is smooth and requires no trimming, but isn't adjustable.
  • Ankle elastics: These come pre-sewn and ready for class right away, or not. When they're not pre-sewn, you need to sew them on but at least you can adjust their placement and tightness. You can choose a single straight piece or two crisscrossing pieces.
  • Color: Traditional pink may be the go-to color many girls, but many male and female dancers prefer black, white, or nude.

Also pay attention to each shoe's fit and feel. Well-fit ballet shoes hug your feet comfortably with your toes straight, not bent. They aren't supposed to be tight or too large with room to grow. Leather shoes stretch with use but shouldn't be uncomfortably tight when new. Canvas shoes don't stretch much with use.

Good fit is important for not only your comfort but also proper technique. You want to be able to point, extend, and flex your foot easily. Also, you want to avoid any gaping or excess bulkiness in order to feel the floor and allow your teacher to see your feet and toes during steps.

Ballet shoes are sized differently than regular street shoes, and manufacturers usually indicate the difference in sizing. Read the manufacturers' suggestions as well as other buyers' feedback on sizing to help you decide what size to order. The same shoe can be true to size for some yet too small or too large for others. The best way to know if a ballet shoe fits well is to try on a pair, take a few steps, and point your feet and toes. Just be sure to keep the shoes clean and not sew anything in case you want to exchange them.

For research, I polled many ballet friends (some recreational like me, others professional) about their favorite ballet shoes and checked ballet-specific publications and sites for additional reviews and feedback.

Here are the best ballet shoes you can buy in 2019:

Read on in the slides below to check out our top picks.

The best canvas ballet shoe

Why you'll love it: The So Danca Stretch Canvas Split Sole (SD16) is the go-to ballet shoe because it's lightweight, comfortable, and conforms to the foot for carefree movement.

The So Danca Stretch Canvas Split Sole (SD16) is popular and for very good reason. Made of soft stretchy canvas with an elastic top opening, this shoe provides a streamlined appearance. Dancers feel that this shoe creates a nice, clean line for the foot as also shows off the foot's arch well. There are no thick pleats on the bottom to catch on the floor or add extra bulk.

The So Danca Stretch Canvas Split Sole (SD16) is very comfortable. In addition to being lightweight, it conforms well to the shape of your feet — especially if you have narrow ones like mine. Nonetheless, a reviewer on Dance Supplies with wide feet finds this shoe "great for any balances" because she can sufficiently spread all five toes in the shoes.

The shoes' suede toe and heel pads are cushiony for jumps but still let you feel the floor. A reviewer on Discountdance.com describes the pads as "sturdy with quite a bit of springy 'squish' to keep your heels and metatarsals from aching on hard surfaces." Another plus is the pre-sewn crossed elastics, which are perfect for people who can't sew or just want to put on the shoe and jump right into class.

In my experience, the So Danca Stretch Canvas Split Sole (SD16) is pretty durable for a canvas shoe. Although one dancer friend I interviewed finds it prone to wear and tear, she still loves and has remained loyal to this shoe for years. Another friend who dances told me that he normally buys this brand unless he's in a place where it isn't sold. A mom of two teen-aged dancers I spoke with said that her sons prefer this shoe but advises ordering one size bigger than a men's street size.

The So Danca Stretch Canvas Split Sole (SD16) was chosen as one of Pointe Magazine'stop six models and one of Dance Magazine's top 10 models. It was rated five out of five stars on both Discountdance.com and Dance Supplies. Around 75% of Amazon reviewers awarded it five out of five stars.

Pros: Comfortable, conforms to the foot, a good deal

Cons: Durability and sizing varies from person to person

Buy the So Danca Stretch Canvas Split Sole (SD16) on Amazon for $15.41 to $30.83  (price varies depending on size)

The best leather ballet shoe

Why you'll love them: Enjoy the resistance and durability of leather as well as the flexibility of canvas with the Bloch Adult Prolite II Hybrid shoes, which smartly combines these two materials in its construction.

Featuring a leather upper with a soft canvas insert in the middle, the Bloch Adult Prolite II Hybridmay be just what you are looking for if you want advantages of both leather and canvas in a single ballet shoe.

The canvas insert hugs your feet and shows off your arch when you point while minimizing wrinkling and gaping. The leather makes it more durable than a canvas shoe, yet is still lightweight, supple, and supportive. Several dancers note that this model is good for narrow feet.

One professional dancer friend likes that that leather makes her feet work harder but that the canvas arch helps "accentuate the shape of the foot." Another friend who dances recreationally has been eyeing the Bloch Adult Prolite II Hybrid when transitioning from canvas to leather ballet shoes.

The Bloch Adult Prolite II Hybrid has a split sole with suede foot pads that make a good surface for turning. It also has a cotton lining, a suede in-sock, and conveniently pre-sewn cross elastic straps for immediate use. Dancers also like the adjustable elastic drawstring for customizing the fit of the shoe's upper.

BestReviewspicked this shoe as "Best of the Best" of ballet shoes for 2019. The Bloch Adult Prolite II Hybridearned four-and-a-half out of five stars on Discountdance.com and four out of five stars on AllAboutDance. Around 82% of 56 Zappos reviewers awarded it five out of five stars and 64% of 134 Amazon customers.

Pros: Leather works foot and lasts longer while canvas insert flatters arch

Cons: A little pricey, durability and sizing vary from person to person

Buy the Bloch Adult "Prolite II Hybrid" Leather Split-Sole Ballet Shoes on Amazon for $19.43 to $33.90 (price varies depending on size)

Buy the Bloch Adult "Prolite II Hybrid" Leather Split-Sole Ballet Shoes on Zappos for $33.90

The best form-fitting ballet shoe

Why you'll love it: For a divinely comfortable fit that molds to your feet for fancy footwork, wear the Capezio Hanami shoe to your next ballet class.

Made of incredibly soft and flexible four-way stretch canvas, the Capezio Hanami gently hugs your foot. Hailed as a "slipper superhero" for ballet shoes by Pointe Magazine, it sports a sleek silhouette, yielding both aesthetic and functional benefits.

Flattering the foot without any bunching or gaping, the Capezio Hanami fits "like a glove" to many users, such as those on Discount Dance Supply where it earned four-and-a-half out of five stars. In my experience, this shoe feels like a second skin and lets you feel the floor. Its snug fit is perfect for people with narrow feet.

The only drawback to the shoe's lightweight, thin, and breathable canvas is that this shoe might wear out faster those constructed with heavier canvas. This model has a smooth interior lining that adds some reinforcement, but be sure to keep your toenails trimmed!

A stretchy diamond-shaped gusset under the arch in the middle connects the shoe's toe and heel pieces, enabling full pointing, and flexing. Flat front pleats under the toe don't add bulk or interfere with fluid movements, like pirouettes. The Capezio Hanami's flat suede split-sole patches support secure balancing and turning.

Capezio Hanami earned four out of five stars on All About Dance and five out of five stars on Dance Supplies. Personally, I love this shoe and enjoy it for all of the reasons listed above. My street shoe size is 7.5 narrow and my Capezio Hanamis are 8.5 narrow.

Don't be startled when you take them out of the box for the first time and wonder, "How am I going to get them onto my feet?" Just insert your toes into the front of the shoe under the conveniently pre-sewn elastics, pull back the shoe to smoothen and stretch the canvas around your metatarsals, and then pull up the back onto your heel.

Pros: Good looking, comfortable, fits like a smooth glove

Cons: Tradeoff for thin, comfortable canvas is less durability, runs small

Buy the Capezio Hanami on Amazon for $16.31 to $88.46 (price varies depending on size)

Mark Zuckerberg built a glowing wooden box to help his wife sleep better

Mark Zuckberg Priscilla Chan

  • Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg built a glowing wooden box to help his wife, Dr. Priscilla Chan, sleep better.
  • The box emits a soft light from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. every morning.
  • "As an engineer, building a device to help my partner sleep better is one of the best ways I can think of to express my love and gratitude," Zuckerberg wrote.

Mark Zuckerberg just posted a photo of his latest invention on Facebook and Instagram.

No, it's not social media-related. It's a wooden "sleep box" that faintly glows for an hour each morning, between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m.

Being a mom is hard, and since we've had kids Priscilla has had a hard time sleeping through the night. She'll wake up and check the time on her phone to see if the kids might wake up soon, but then knowing the time stresses her out and she can't fall back asleep. So I worked on building her what I call the "sleep box". It sits on her nightstand, and between the hours of 6-7am it emits a very faint light -- visible enough that if she sees it she'll know it's an okay time for one of us to get the kids, but faint enough that the light won't wake her up if she's still sleeping. And since it doesn't show the time, if she wakes up in the middle of the night, she knows to just go back to sleep without having to worry about what time it is. So far this has worked better than I expected and she can now sleep through the night. As an engineer, building a device to help my partner sleep better is one of the best ways I can think of to express my love and gratitude. A bunch of my friends have told me they'd want something like this, so I'm putting this out there in case another entrepreneur wants to run with this and build sleep boxes for more people!

A post shared by Mark Zuckerberg (@zuck) on Apr 27, 2019 at 9:45am PDT on

In his post, Zuckerberg wrote that his wife, Dr. Priscilla Chan, inspired the invention. He wrote that Chan's sleep has become more difficult since the couple had two daughters together.

"She'll wake up and check the time on her phone to see if the kids might wake up soon, but then knowing the time stresses her out and she can't fall back asleep," Zuckerberg wrote.

The Facebook founder and CEO wrote that the box's light is "visible enough that if she sees it she'll know it's an okay time for one of us to get the kids, but faint enough that the light won't wake her up if she's still sleeping."

He added that it doesn't show the time, to prevent Chan from worrying about the hour.

"So far this has worked better than I expected and she can now sleep through the night," he said. "As an engineer, building a device to help my partner sleep better is one of the best ways I can think of to express my love and gratitude."

The post attracted a number of comments online. Former Facebook manager and angel investor Dave Morin called the device, "Genius."

Singer Lily Allen took a jab at Facebook's controversial year, writing, "If your wife told you that white supremacy was keeping her up at night, do you think you could engineer an algorithm to make it go away, or be very very faint ?"

But Zuckerberg wrote that those in his social circle have been receptive to the idea: "A bunch of my friends have told me they'd want something like this, so I'm putting this out there in case another entrepreneur wants to run with this and build sleep boxes for more people!"

This sealant spray is such a quick and effective alternative to car wax that using it feels like entering the cheat code into your favorite video game

303 Touchless Sealant

  • Waxing a car with traditional paste or liquid wax is a very tedious process that most people don't have the time or patience for. I am one of those people.
  • I've been using 303 Touchless Sealant, a time-saving alternative to wax. All you have to do is spray it on and rinse it off with water.
  • 303 Touchless Sealant uses a SiO2 (silicon dioxide) base to create a hydrophobic and UV barrier on paint, and it's also safe to use on windows and wheels. It made my car shiny, smooth, and repelled water longer than other waxes I've used.
  • At $24.99 for 32 ounces, it might be a little bit more than the wax you use now, but the convenience and protection it provides makes up for the difference in price.

Waxing your car is a great way to protect your paint, add shine, and repel water, but it's a real labor of love — one that most people don't have the patience or time to do correctly.

For me, it's a bit of both. And because of that, I've gotten poor results with wax. Use too much and you'll be left with chalky or pasty residue all over your car. Speed through it and will have surely missed some spots. Since I would rather not dedicate hours of my already limited free time to meticulously waxing like the Karate Kid, I've long searched for a solid replacement — and I finally found it.

303 Touchless Sealant is a time-saving alternative to traditional paste or liquid waxes. It uses SiO2 (silicon dioxide) technology to create a hydrophobic and UV barrier on the surface of your car to repel water and dirt, and since it's safe to use on paint, glass, and wheels, you don't have to cover windows while spraying.

Here's how it works

I first tested 303 Touchless Sealant immediately after washing my newly-acquired 2003 BMW 540i M-Sport, and it was extremely easy to use. While out of direct sunlight, spray it on the surface of your car, let it sit as you work your way around, and rinse it off with water. You'll immediately see the product at work. The water beads up and quickly runs off the surface. I also treated all of the glass, including my side mirrors.

Once I dried my car off, it was shiny enough to see reflections of the surrounding trees, cars, and clouds in the sky. It was also very smooth. One Amazon reviewer stated that he placed a can of soda on the hood of his car and that before he could grab all of his things, the can had slid off the surface of his car. It's that smooth.

Considering the very minimal amount of work involved and the initial results, using this sealant honestly feels like entering the cheat code into your favorite video game. It's a super satisfying product to use in comparison to the overly tedious processes associated with car detailing.

303 Touchless Sealant

I was pleased with the immediate results of the 303 Touchless Sealant, but I really began to see the value it over the next few days. While driving in the rain, the water seemed to vacate my windshield as soon as it landed, making it much easier to see clearly. However, this by no means a viable replacement for windshield wipers. You should absolutely use them in the rain, regardless of what you've treated your glass with.

A full week later when I washed my car again, I noticed the same beading effect and that's what impressed me the most. The fact that the 303 Touchless Sealant was still on my car and activated after a few days of rain throughout the week and a full wash proved that it's very effective.

I've used other spray waxes and honestly, they're all pretty bad. You can't expect them to last longer than a few days, so they're only good for last-minute detailing before a car show, big date, or a photo shoot.

303

The bottom line

After using 303 Touchless Sealant, I'll likely never use traditional car wax again. I found it to be much easier to use and it takes a fraction of the time. At $24.99, it's probably a few dollars more than the current wax you use, but the amount of time and effort it'll save you far outweighs the dollar amount.

Whether you're a car enthusiast who knows how tedious waxing a car can be, or someone who only goes to the extent of drive-through car washes every now and then, I strongly recommend using 303 Touchless Sealant on your ride.

I traveled the world for a year and a tiny city in Bali was the one place I can see myself returning to dozens of times

  • I left New York a year ago to travel around the world as Business Insider's international correspondent.
  • While it would be impossible to pinpoint my favorite place, the place I want to return to soonest is the city of Ubud, on the Indonesian island of Bali.
  • Ubud has a bustling community of local Balinese, digital nomads, and vacationers exploring rice terraces, temples, spiritual retreats, yoga and meditation classes, and villas set into the countryside.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

A year ago, I left New York to travel the world. In that time, I've visited over 20 countries and dozens of cities — everywhere from China and Russia to Spain, Portugal, and Bulgaria. Each place had its joys and its frustrations.

In Tanzania, I experienced some of the most beautiful nature in the world, but it was extremely difficult to get to. The azure waters of the Atlantic in Portugal were possibly the most beautiful place I've ever gone swimming, but it came at the price of milling through hordes of British tourists. And when I visited Egypt, I got to fulfill my childhood dream of seeing the Pyramids, the Sphinx, and the ancient Egyptian temples, but I felt like I had to always be on guard from getting cheated.

As I look back now, while I can't pinpoint my favorite destination of the bunch, I do know which place I would like to return to soonest: Ubud, Bali.

Ubud is a place that could, on paper, be easy to make fun of. While it has been known as a spiritual and mystical center to Balinese for centuries — Ubud means "medicine" — it has sprouted a community of New Agey seekers and expats looking to live the good life over the last few decades.

On any given day, you'll encounter digital nomads working on startups, Westerners taking sabbaticals to join spiritual retreats, Australians starting cafes or co-working spaces, and locals living their life amidst it all. A significant percentage of the people I met had been to Ubud two, three, or four times. Many come every year and some have moved there permanently.

Bali Ubud On A Budget (3 of 45)

When I was there last May, I attended a full-day spiritual retreat that included yoga, "ecstatic dance," a cacao ceremony, and workshops of "authentic relating." If you can get past the privilege that comes with being able to take a few weeks off for "self-improvement," it's kind of beautiful how many people come to Ubud earnestly to work on themselves and improve their lives at retreats like the one I attended.

For my part, I was skeptical, scoffing at the retreat even as I took part in it. But the more I let down my guard and met the retreat on its own terms, the more I was rewarded. By the end of the day, I felt like I had shaken off a long-held resentment, cried twice, and made a few friends that I'm still keeping in touch with today.

That's kind of the way it goes in Ubud. Someone suggests an activity that sounds far out of your comfort zone and you just shrug and go, "Why not?"

Bali Ubud On A Budget (25 of 45)

Best things to do in Ubud

One of the joys of visiting Ubud is seeing how Indonesians, local Balinese, and expats use the city as their canvas to create unique places and experiences.

One night while in Ubud, one of my newfound friends suggested we go to Bali Dacha, a Russian-style spa club built around a villa estate in the jungle outskirts of Ubud. Set in what feels like a giant treehouse, Bali Dacha has multiple saunas, steam rooms, pools, and bonfires to hang in and around. The crowd is mostly Russians (a dacha is a Russian cottage), with some Europeans, Americans, and Aussies mixed in.

When I visited, there was a dance party going on, but few people were drinking. It's one of those Ubud places where, at certain points, say, when discussing the rise of global fascism by a bonfire with a stranger, making dirty jokes in broken English with a group of naked Russians in a sauna, or meeting a model in a darkened pool, you ask yourself: Is this real? The blasting psychedelic trance music and the Russian guy dancing with a Native American headdress does nothing to clear up the confusion.

Then there is the Yoga Barn, a popular retreat center that offers comfortable, accessible classes ranging from every kind of yoga discipline to sound healing. To give you an idea of the kind of place Ubud is, the most difficult place to get into isn't a swanky nightclub, it's the Yoga Barn. During peak months, classes like "sound healing" can have lines to get in that wrap around the block. I never took it, but every person I met that had said the sound healing class was "life-changing."

For outdoorsy folks, there are tons of gorgeous hikes, like theCampuhan Ridge Walk, which takes you along a high ridge between two rivers, or a night hike up Mount Batur to see one of the most spectacular sunrises in the world.

For history buffs and spiritualists, there are tons of temples spread across Ubud and the surrounding areas. Some are in the central town, while others are hidden in small towns, mountain valleys, and the jungle.

One of my favorites to explore was the Sacred Monkey Forest, a nature reserve housing hundreds of wild monkeys. The gorgeous forest and temple complex have been home to monkeys for hundreds of years, and the area is considered a holy place on the island. When I went, I came within feet of dozens of monkeys — and I saw monkeys actually land on top of other visitors.

Ubud is known as a paradise for vegans and raw food eaters, but that mostly comes from the expats who have made the city their home. The Balinese cook up fresh fish and Indonesian specialties in warungs, or family-owned restaurants, throughout the city. They're worth sampling.

Ubud travel tips: Avoid peak tourist season and eat local

A word of warning to would-be visitors: Over-tourism is a major problem — the number of annual tourists has jumped from 2.2 million in 1990 to 13.7 million last year — and the city buckles from the weight of it in the peak summer months. The traffic of thousands of mopeds and motorbikes chokes the city's jungle-lined streets to the point where it can take an hour to move a few miles.

Many foreigners are beginning to work with locals in response to the over-tourism to build sustainable tourism businesses.

To mitigate the over-tourism when I visited, I came during an off-peak month, stayed a short motorbike ride outside the city in an adjacent suburb, and tried my best to eat and shop at the various local Balinese owned eateries, cafes, and shops.

An acquaintance of mine who recently visited the city for a few weeks posted a sentiment on Facebook that I feel perfectly captures Ubud: "It's so easy to get sucked into the Vortex of Ubud. To wonder if you ever need to leave this place again. It feels like you don't need to do anything except for [sic] wander around just have nice conversations with people about how to live a healthier, happier life."

After the week in the city, I was no longer questioning why the first thing a taxi driver just outside the airport said to me was, "Welcome back. So, how many times have you been to Bali?"
