When you're mired in choices, deciding on a streaming service for TV and movies can feel as paralyzing as choosing the right Instagram filter.

Still, it's a welcome trend that streaming options allow us the luxury of cutting cable cords, while maintaining access to our favorite TV and movies through apps at our leisure.

However, with so many options out there, we can also at times end up overwhelmed, overcharged, and oversubscribed to far too many streaming services.

And frustratingly, it's often a lot easier to sign up than it is to cancel a streaming subscription.

For iPhone users ready to break up with Hulu, canceling subscriptions through Apple can be particularly vexing for the uninitiated.

Fortunately, we've navigated the process for you.

Here are the seven steps to achieve a conscious uncoupling from your monthly payment or free trial with Hulu:

The best winter boots for women

  • All too often, women's winter boots put fashion above function and you end up with cold wet feet. We tested dozens of winter boots to find the best ones for warmth, style, and comfort.
  • The UGG Adirondack III Boots are our top pick for women because they are stylish enough to wear with any outfit, but warm, waterproof, and tough enough to handle the harshest winter weather.

Winter boots are one of those things that are really hard to shop for — especially when you're a woman. After all, you want a pair of boots that are both warm and cute. Besides, you shouldn't have to choose between fashion and comfort.

In the process of writing this buying guide, we researched winter boots from all the top brands and several lesser-known names to find pairs in a variety of styles that were highly rated. We tested dozens of winter boots to find the best ones for different women's needs.

After all, we know that not every woman needs heavy-duty boots that can take on sub-zero temperatures and six-foot snowbanks, but we also know that most women who are looking for a great pair of snow boots won't be satisfied with a cute pair of water-resistant boots that can't handle more than a light flurry. As such, we've included a fair mix of different options here so there will be something for everyone.

To test these boots, we dunked them in a tub filled with icy water and tried to make them slip on patches of ice. We wore them on cold days to see how warm they were and stepped into deep puddles on rainy days to test water resistance. We walked for miles on snowy stretches of sidewalk in New York City and waded through snow banks in Central Park to vet these boots.

Our opinions are also backed up by expert reviewers and actual buyers, so rest assured — these winter boots are guaranteed to keep your feet warm, dry, and happy all winter long and for many winters to come.

The best winter boots overall

Why you'll love them: The UGG Adirondack III Boots are super cute winter boots that can handle extreme cold and deep snow without any problems.

UGG makes super stylish boots, and the Adirondack III boots are made for intense cold and tons of snow. With these boots on your feet, you'll be ready to brave anything winter throws at you.

The boots are made of waterproof leather and they have a super cozy insulating wool lining that's as fuzzy as it is warm. You can roll the tops down to expose the wool for style, or flip them back up to keep more of your ankle and lower calf warm.

The Vibram outsole is strong and provides great traction on icy surfaces, plus, these boots can handle extremely cold temperatures as low as -20°C, which is -4°F. You can buy the Adirondack boots in a few different colors, including white, black, and brown.

When I first put an older version of these boots on, I was impressed by how light, warm, and cute they were. By all rights, they should be clunky, but they're not. UGG's boots look cute enough to pair with skinny jeans or leggings and a dress all winter long in even the snobbiest of cities.

These boots are tough enough to handle rural areas with tons of snow, too, so you really can't go wrong with them. In my mind, they're the perfect boots for just about every woman. The only downside is the high price, but they'll last you for years. After a full winter of use, mine are still going strong.

Pros: Waterproof, pure wool lining, made for very cold temperatures, good traction, cute style

Cons: Expensive

The best tall winter boots

Why you'll love them: The Sorel Joan of Arctic Boots are absolutely perfect for stomping through snow banks and tackling intense winter conditions in style.

When the winter winds blow up a crazy snow storm and you have six feet of snow to contend with in sub-zero temperature, you need some serious winter boots that will keep more than just your feet warm. Sorel's Joan of Arctic Boots are just the ticket.

These boots are nearly a foot tall, so they'll keep your entire calf warm and dry even in deep snow. The suede leather shaft is fully waterproof and a faux fur cuff finishes the boots off in style. They lace up from a sturdy vulcanized rubber section that covers your toes and keeps them dry.

Sorel says these boots can handle temperatures as low as -25°F or -32°C. The tread on the bottom is grippy and good for ice and snow. You can even get them in a number of different colors and styles if faux fur isn't your thing or you don't want leather.

When I first took them out of the box, I thought these boots would be super clunky and bulky, but looks are deceiving. Once they were on my feet, they looked great. I can easily see these boots being perfect for both the city and the country because they are super stylish yet rugged enough to take on serious snow.

Pros: Tall boots, extra warm, rated for cold temperatures, good grip, comfortable, cute, many colors

Cons: Expensive

The best light but tough winter boots

Why you'll love them: The Columbia Bugaboot IV Winter Boots protect your feet from the fierce cold of winter and wet icy slush puddles — plus, they're light on your feet.

When you think about tough gear that'll last you through an epic snowstorm, chances are, Columbia comes to mind. The company's coats, boots, shoes, and other gear are known for being of the highest quality. Columbia's Bugaboot IV Winter Boots are no exception.

I tested an older version of these popular and very highly rated winter boots and came away impressed by how light and toasty warm they were. By the look of them, I expected these boots to be as heavy and awkward to wear as the old winter boots I used to wear to survive the brutal winters in upstate New York (right across from the Canadian border, so we're talking six feet of snow and -30 windchills here). Imagine my surprise when they turned out to be light and nimble like a good pair of hiking boots.

The secret is in their design: Columbia used a mix of waterproof leather and textiles on the uppers to keep out all the snow, slush, and wet of winter without adding any unnecessary weight. The 200 grams of insulation inside keep your feet piping hot, too. These boots are so cozy that Columbia says they can handle temperatures as low as -25F or -32C.

Of course, it's not just the uppers that keep these boots light, it's also the special Techlite midsole and the Omni-Grip outsole that keep the weight down. Both are lightweight and specially designed for great comfort, stability, and traction on slippery surfaces.

These are the kind of boots I'd want on my feet during the cold nasty winters snowy climates. They're perfect for walks through the snowy woods, shoveling out your driveway, and heading out to the grocery store. They obviously will not win any beauty contests and those who have more mild winters or live in cities where style is more important than strength won't need tough boots like these.

However, for anyone who needs a super warm, waterproof, stable, and lightweight pair of winter boots that are ready for action, these are the ones I'd recommend.

Pros: Lightweight, very warm, rated for low temperatures, relatively affordable

Cons: A bit bulky, not the most beautiful boots you'll ever see

The best stylish winter boots with a small heel

Why you'll love them: The Sorel Slimpack II Lace Boots are fully waterproof, slim, and cute with a slight heel and fun color options.

If you don't want to wear clunky winter boots all the time, you may want a lighter, slimmer pair for days when there's less snow on the ground. These Slimpack Lace II boots from Sorel deliver. They have the distinctive duck boot design you see on many winter boots and rain boots, but Sorel adds cute little design elements like wool accents and fun laces to make them stand out.

The full-grain leather upper is fully waterproof as is the vulcanized rubber part that wraps around the lower part of your foot. You can splash in the rain or stomp through slush puddles in these boots without getting wet. The wool felt collar around the top of the boot adds warmth and style to the basic boots.

Inside the boots, there's a nice microfleece lining that will keep your feet warm but not sweltering. If you live in milder climates where you may get some snow, but it's never that bad, you can call these your only winter boots and use them as rain boots in any weather.

These are comfortable, breathable boots that Sorel says are best for heavy rain instead of snow. However, if you wear them with a nice thick pair of socks, they are perfect for cold winter days and a few feet of snow. The waterproof construction and the grippy outsole give perfect traction on ice.

These boots even have a little heel that's just under two inches. It adds a touch of class and a bit of height for shorter women. As a 5-foot-2 lady, I appreciated that. I love these Sorel boots and I wear them whenever it rains. This winter, I wear them when we have light snow because they're both cute looking and practical for city winters.

If you need heavy-duty winter boots for extreme cold and snow, check out our other more rugged picks.

Pros: Slight heel, cute color options, good traction, waterproof, slim, comfortable, warm

Cons: Not as rugged or warm as some

The best winter boots made in America

Why you'll love them: The L.L.Bean Shearling-lined Bean Boots are super cozy, classic looking, and made to last — right in America.

L.L.Bean's boots are quintessential winter gear for a reason: They're extremely high quality. These classic duck-style Bean Boots are lined with real sheepskin shearling to keep your feet extra warm even in the cold winters of Maine where these boots are made.

The uppers are made from full-grain leather that's waterproof, while the rubber covering on the bottom half of the boots keeps your feet totally dry even if you step into a nasty puddle. The boots have a tiny heel and a high-traction rubber chain pattern on the bottom for extra grip on slippery ice.

It's not often you find boots that are made in America, so these Bean Boots are special. They're very high quality and they should last for years before you need a new pair. Longevity is going to important because these boots cost $229, which is an investment. L.L.Bean does make cheaper versions of its classic Bean Boots without the shearling if you want to save some money.

I tried a pair on a wet rainy day and they handled puddles with aplomb. They handled snow equally well. These boots are very warm, so they're well-suited to cold conditions and a foot or two of snow. Because the design is simple, classic, and cute, you could wear the Bean Boots in any situation from a trek in the snowy woods to a jaunt into town for milk.

Pros: Made in America, real shearling is warm, durable, great traction, waterproof

Cons: Expensive

The best mid-calf winter boots

Why you'll love them: The Columbia Heavenly Omni-Heat Boots feel like cute light slippers on your feet, but they're super cozy and fully waterproof mid-calf winter boots.

If the other Columbia boots in our guide are just too clunky and rugged looking for your tastes, you'll love these Heavenly Omni-Heat boots. First things first: These boots look way cuter in person than they do online. When I put an older version of these boots on the first time, I knew I could easily wear them with skinny jeans or a dress and tights in the city without shame. Columbia has a bunch of fun colors, too, so you can buy the pair that'll look best with your style.

Believe it or not, these cute boots are just as warm, waterproof, and comfortable as the chunkier Bugaboots. The waterproof woven textile uppers hit your leg mid-calf and boast a cute faux fur lining that peeks out at the top and along the sides where you lace the boots up. They'll keep your feet and part of your legs warm even in a foot or two of snow.

Columbia's Omni-Tech waterproof seam-sealed membrane keeps water, slush, and snow out of your boots and the 200 grams of insulation inside keep your feet and legs super warm. Just like the Bugaboots, these ones can withstand temperatures as cold as -25F or -32C, thanks to the Omni-Heat reflective lining.

These boots will fare just as well on the snowy city streets as they will in the driveway shoveling snow or out walking on snowy paths. I consider these boots to be the perfect stylish alternative for colder climates where you still need serious boots.

Pros: Warm, comfortable, good traction, rated for very cold temperatures, cute looking, higher rise

Cons: A bit expensive

The best winter boots made with sustainable practices

Why you'll love them: The Kamik Sienna winter boots are cute, cozy, and best of all, sustainably made in Canada.

If you care more about where and how your boots are made than anything, Kamik is a good brand to know. The company makes 73% of its products in North America, and these Sienna boots are actually made in Canada. Kamik also works to recycle 100% of its waste and has a recycling program for worn out boots.

These Canadian-made boots have a nice warm 3M Thinsulate Insulation to keep your feet toasty during cold winter days. The bottom half of the boot is made of Kamik's unique RubberHe material, which is 50% lighter than natural rubber and is 100% recyclable. It keeps your feet dry and doesn't damage the environment — it's a win-win. The bottom of the boots is waterproof, though the leather and quilted flannel uppers aren't.

The Kamik Sienna boots are slim and light enough to wear in mild winter weather or rain. They look super cute with jeans or dresses and leggings.

Having tried them myself, I'd recommend them for mild climates or days when you just need to wear cute waterproof boots around town. However, with a good pair of winter socks inside, they'd be great for winter weather.

Pros: Lightweight, comfy, warm, waterproof, relatively affordable, sustainably made Canada

Cons: Not as heavy-duty as some

The best extra warm winter boots

Why you'll love it: The L.L.Bean Pro Wildcat Boots are heavy duty boots that are made for intense cold and lots of snow.

When you live in a very cold place with tons of snow and you need a serious pair of boots, the L.L.Bean Pro Wildcat Boots are a good pick. These boots are rated to keep your feet warm during light activity in temperatures of 30°F or during more intense activity in temperatures as low as -20°F.

The waterproof leather upper and L.L.Bean's TEK2.5 waterproof technology make these boots all-but impermeable. You can dunk your feet in a huge icy slush puddle without fear — These boots will keep your feet totally dry and warm. There's even a toe bumper in the front to protect you from stubbing your toe on a fallen log or what have you.

The PrimaLoft insulation inside the boots wicks away moisture while also keeping your feet comfortably warm. On the bottom of the boots, you have very good grip and traction even on slippery ice and snow, thanks to the Vertigrip outsole. The way it's designed prevents snow from getting trapped in the treads and messing up the traction.

Although these boots are a bit bulky, they're quite light on your feet. I tried a pair and I was surprised by how comfortable they were to walk in. Most heavy-duty winter boots make you feel like a giant stomping around, but these Wildcat Boots felt more like a tough pair of hiking or work boots.

Obviously, L.L.Bean's Wildcat boots aren't ones you'd choose if you live in a mild climate or a city where you have to look your best, but out in rural areas where you really need a good pair fo hard-core boots, these are perfect. They're also great for outdoorsy ladies who love to snowshoe and walk in the wintry woods.

Pros: Warm, made for tough winters, waterproof, leather and fabric design is breathable

Cons: Not so fashionable

The best stylish winter boots for cold weather

Why you'll love it: The UGG Fraser Boots are perfect for city slickers who don't deal with much snow but still need super warm boots with great traction.

Full disclosure: These are not serious winter boots. You should definitely not wear them in feet of snow or run through deep puddles in them. However, if you're walking around the city and you need to look fashionable while staying toasty warm, the UGG Fraser Boots are the ones for you.

As a city slicker myself, I love these boots. They look cute with skinny jeans or dresses with tights and the sheepskin and leather design made me want to show them off. I wore them on the first 30-degree day in New York City and I was amazed by how warm my feet were. These are definitely the boots I'm wearing all winter long (providing we don't get feet of snow, of course).

The real sheepskin lining covers the tongue and top of the boots to add warmth and style. Inside, you'll find a cushy pure wool insole and tons of sheepskin that'll wick sweat and keep your feet extra warm. On the bottom of the boots, you get excellent traction and a subtle 1.5-inch heel for a bit of height.

The leather is water-resistant and you can treat it with waterproofing agents to make it even tougher. You can get these boots in a few different colors, including black, brown, gray, and a subtle purple tone. The color of the sheepskin also varies to match or contrast with the leather.

Although these aren't true winter boots for serious snow, they are perfect for stylish city folk who want to look cute and stay warm on the city streets. They're also great for mild climates that get cold, but not snowy.

Pros: Cute design, great for the city, water resistant, sheepskin lining is warm, comfortable, good traction

Cons: Not fully waterproof, not for serious snowfall

220 central park south

Billionaire hedge-fund manager Ken Griffin just picked up another two condos in the Billionaires' Row tower where he bought a record-breaking $238 million spread in January.

Griffin paid $1.89 million and $2.06 million for two new adjacent apartments on the 20th floor, which could be for guests or staff, Jennifer Gould Keil reported for The New York Post.

The purchase brings Griffin's total investment in the building, 220 Central Park South, to almost $242 million. His other spread of condos, which broke the record for the most expensive home sale in the US, encompasses floors 50 through 53.

But Griffin isn't the only billionaire in the 79-story, Robert A.M. Stern-designed tower, which borders the southern end of Central Park and is still under construction.

Here's a rundown of the ultra-wealthy hedge funders, executives, and celebrities who have snapped up units in 220 Central Park South.

Ken Griffin, Citadel hedge fund founder

Griffin, who's worth an estimated $12.7 billion, broke the record for the most expensive home ever sold in the US when he paid $238 million for his first spread of condos in the building, which encompasses floors 50 through 53, in January 2019.

Nine months later, he dropped another $1.89 million and $2.06 million for two new adjacent apartments on the 20th floor, which could be for intended guests or staff, Jennifer Gould Keil reported for The New York Post.

The purchase brings Griffin's total investment in the building to almost $242 million.

Singer Sting and his wife, Trudie Styler

Singer Sting and wife Trudie Styler purchased a $67.5 million penthouse in the luxury tower in July 2019, Curbed New York reported.

Daniel Och, founder and former chairman of Och-Ziff Capital Management

Och bought a unit in 220 Central Park South, according to The Wall Street Journal, but the purchase price and date are unknown.

Och, who's worth an estimated $3.1 billion, stepped down from his role of chairman at the hedge fund this year, which then changed its name to Sculptor Capital Management, Forbes reported.

Andrew Zaro, Cavalry Portfolio Services chairman

Cavalry Portfolio Services chairman Andrew Zaro has bought in the building for an unknown price, according to the Journal.

Richard Leibovitch, Arel Capital founding partner

Leibovitch bought a $26.2 million four-bedroom condo on the 31st floor in December 2018, The Real Deal reported.

Renata de Camargo Nascimento, Brazilian construction billionaire

Nascimento purchased a $30.191 million unit in January 2019, according to the Journal.

The Brazilian heiress, who's worth an estimated $3.1 billion, along with her two sisters is a controlling shareholder of Camargo Correa, a multinational construction conglomerate.

Albert Behler, Paramount Group chairman

Behler paid $33.5 million for a 35th-floor unit, The Real Deal reported.

Michael Cantanucci, New Country Motor Car Group owner

Cantanucci, who owns luxury car dealership New Country Motor Car Group, bought a $38 million condo in the building in October 2019, The Real Deal reported.

While the transactions of these particular individuals have been reported, many other 220 Central Park Tower buyers are essentially anonymous because they've bought units through an LLC.

This is common practice in the luxury real-estate market for billionaires, celebrities, and other high-profile individuals concerned with privacy, according to the Journal.

This was the case with Griffin, who bought his $238 million spread in January under the name of "NYCP LLC." According to the Journal, more than 85% of buyers in 220 Central Park Tower have purchased their units via an LLC entity.

But as the Journal reported this week, these buyers are no longer guaranteed anonymity. A New York state law that will make every real-estate buyer's name publicly available under New York's Freedom of Information Law went into effect in September.

NOW WATCH: How Area 51 became the center of alien conspiracy theories

A nearly abandoned town in California could sell for around $6 million. It's been 'trapped in time' for decades.

Campo California town

  • The historic center of the former Army town of Campo, California, is for sale. The listing agent expects the town to go for between $5.5 million and $6 million.
  • Campo hasn't changed much since the 1940s: It's scattered with vacant properties, though around 100 residents still occupy its historic center.
  • The sale has captured the interest of movie directors, CEOs, and big tech companies. A Hollywood producer already put in an offer.
  • Visit Businessinsider.com for more stories.

Real estate agent Conor Brennan had never heard of Campo, California, until he got a call "out of nowhere" from the man who owns most of it, Las Vegas investor John Ray.

"He said, 'I have my own town if you want to check it out. I'm thinking of selling it," Brennan said. "I had no idea he was serious."

The area is almost a ghost town, though it's not entirely empty — its center is home to around 100 people. It comes with 28 buildings, including a post office and Baptist church.

Brennan said that at first, Ray said he wanted to work on a different listing, but that turned out to be a kind of test. When Brennan proved he was easy to work with, Ray handed him the golden goose — 16 acres of Campo.

After the San Diego Union-Tribune reported on Wednesday that the town's historic center was up for sale for the first time since the early 2000s, Brennan was quickly inundated with calls from movie directors, CEOs, big tech companies, and even horse breeders. He said he's planning to sell the town center for between $5.5 million and $6 million, but he hasn't reached a deal yet.

Here's what Campo looks like today.

SEE ALSO: I stayed in one of Italy's ghost towns that's selling off homes for $1, and I was treated like royalty

Campo is about a mile away from the US-Mexico border. Many residents work for US Customs and Border Protection.

Three of the listed properties are occupied by US Border Patrol.

The town is also about an hour east of San Diego. Brennan thinks that's why he has received so many calls from interested buyers.

"It's probably one of the only opportunities that I've heard of as a broker for somebody to own not only a town, but a town that's within an hour drive of the Pacific Ocean," he said.

Most of the buildings were erected in the 1940s. The town has seen only minor changes since.

Campo has a military history: The area was home to the Buffalo Soldiers, all-black regiments of the US Army, during World War II. After the war, a base in Campo housed Italian and German war prisoners.

When Ray bought the town in around 2000, he didn't do any major renovations, Brennan said.

"There's an onsite manager who lives in one of the buildings and she lets him know when things need be done," Brennan said. "He just keeps it repaired as needed. It's kind of still trapped in time."

In addition to the church and post office, the future buyer will gain ownership of a thrift store, cabinet store, and supply shop.

Seven of the listing's properties are commercial units, Brennan said. That includes East County Lumber & Ranch Supply — a one-stop-shop selling everything from gardening tools to cat food to cowboy hats.

The store's co-owner, Bob Marks, told the Union-Tribune that he's fond of the shop's "old-time" vibe.

"I'd like to keep it, basically, the same," he said.

Some Campo residents live in converted Army barracks.

The former Army barracks have been divided into single-family homes and apartments. The listing includes eight multi-family units, two of which are vacant. Brennan said there are 28 residences in total.

"The town is very, very tight. Everybody knows each other," he said. "It's a place where they feel safe and if anything happens, everybody knows about it."

Residents are entitled to stay in their homes until their leases run out, Brennan said.

The new buyer could choose not to renew those leases, but Brennan thinks the future owner will be a hands-off investor like Ray.

"It appealed to him that he was taking over a whole town," Brennan said. "I'm assuming there would be a similar buyer now."

A Hollywood producer has already put in an offer.

Since the Union-Tribune article came out, Brennan said he has received "a bunch of ego-driven calls" from people who want to own Campo. But Ray's ideal buyer, he said, would "keep the history of the town while modernizing it and bringing all of the abandoned buildings up to speed."

Brennan added that he has already signed a non-disclosure agreement with a Hollywood producer who put in a serious offer.

"Whoever owns this and invests in it — they're going to decide the future for the town," he said.

Patagonia just won the United Nations’ top environmental honor for entrepreneurial vision — here's why we're not surprised

patagonia climbing

  • Patagonia won the UN's Champions of the Earth award for entrepreneurial vision for its dynamic, thorough policies that place sustainability at the center of a successful business.
  • Patagonia has a long history of integrating sustainability with its business.
  • It empowers shoppers, employees, and even the company itself to act as environmental activists.

Before it became a household name, Patagonia was a small outfitter of climbing tools, tucked into a Santa Clara, California, building that still smelled like the meat-packing plant it had once been.

In the 16 years prior, its founder, Yvon Chouinard, an accomplished rock climber, had gone from selling hand-forged mountain climbing gear to the largest supplier of climbing hardware in the US.

The year was 1973. More specifically, it was one year after the first-ever UN environment conference, two before the term "global warming" entered the public domain in the title of a scientific paper, and three after Patagonia made its first risky environmental business decision.

Patagonia had earned a bad rap in 1970 for its environmental impact. Its pitons were damaging the rock. And, after ascending a once-pristine route to find it newly disfigured by their gear, Chouinard and his partner Tom Frost decided to phase out the most profitable part of their business. The decision was explained to shoppers in the company's 1972 catalog, followed by an impassioned 14-page essay by the climber Doug Robinson, and the pitons were replaced by aluminum chocks that could be wedged, not hammered. The replacements were wildly successful.

Flash-forward to September 2019 and Patagonia is named a UN Champion of the Earth, the UN's top environmental honor, for its entrepreneurial vision.

Why? Because in its last 50 years, Patagonia has made a habit out of prioritizing sustainability and adapting its highly successful business model to accommodate it.

Patagonia walks the walk.

In the '80s, Patagonia voluntarily imposed a 1% "earth tax" on itself that donates 1% of its profits to grassroots environmental organizations. (As of October 2019, it's donated over $100 million total.) The company started using recycled polyester from plastic soda bottles in the early '90s. After workers got headaches from the formaldehyde on finished cotton, it went organic in the mid-'90s. In 2012, it was the first California company to sign up for voluntary B Corp certification. In 2016, it donated 100% of its Black Friday sales ($10 million) to environmental organizations. It even makes its own beer out of a regenerative grain that restores biodiversity and stores carbon. And so on.

Currently, almost 70% of Patagonia's products are made from recycled materials. By 2025, the goal is to be using 100% renewable or recycled materials.

68245196_10162436789720457_5360019524986863616_o

An examined business, like an examined life, is intensive. Patagonia gets into the weeds.

Once you start, it's hard to stop. Or, in Chouinard's words, "living the examined life is a pain in the ass."

Patagonia examined the paper it used in its catalogs, the sources of its electricity, and the amount of oil its employees consumed on their way to work. Working with an outside auditor and an in-house corporate responsibility specialist, it established working conditions and adequate pay for those who actually make Patagonia clothes. On top of that, Patagonia measured the environmental impact of certain articles of clothing and published the findings in The Footprint Chronicles. It tried to make good things and do minimal harm.

And when it did do harm, Patagonia adapted. Criticism from PETA led the company to change wool manufacturers in 2005 and again in 2015. In 2016, it released a set of guiding ethical principles for the treatment of animals, land-use practices, and sustainability.

There is such a thing as sustainable shopping. But it's not frequent or trend-based.

Sustainable shopping can sound paradoxical; the desire to buy newer, better, unnecessary things causes waste. Capitalism causes waste. But it's also true that people have needs that products fulfill, and it's true that not all products can last a lifetime. The responsible retailer must then first make products that don't require frequent replacing and, second, encourage people to repair and reuse what they already own.

For Patagonia, this arm of sustainability is Worn Wear.

The Worn Wear program shows people online how to step by step repair their Patagonia purchases, and how to recycle an item when it's eventually beyond repair. Shoppers can send their used gear in the mail in return for store credit, and other shoppers can buy it at a discount.

72084652_10162671973185457_5614818567196246016_o

Patagonia treats its customers and employees like activists.

Patagonia also encourages its employees to act as activists. Its environmental internship program allows employees from all parts of the company to leave their roles and, instead, work for an environmental group of their choice for up to two months. They still receive their paychecks and benefits. Local environmental groups get a free intern, and employees bring back new inspiration and a renewed commitment to the environment upon their return.

It also empowers site visitors to act as activists. Patagonia Action Works connects them directly with the company's grassroots grantees. You can search by city, state, or grantee to see how to get involved immediately.

It also treats itself as an 'activist company' on their behalf.

Patagonia considers itself an "activist company," which made it an early rarity in corporate America. For five decades, it has forgone political neutrality.

It's led boycotts (Outdoor Retailer trade show, 2017) to protest legislation that would transfer federal lands to the state. In Patagonia v. Trump, it sued the United States government and President Donald Trump after the administration proposed reducing two national monuments by up to 85%. In June 2018, it said it would donate the $10 million received from President Trump's 2017 tax cuts to groups working to protect vulnerable resources.

Patagonia's entrepreneurial vision addresses sustainability genuinely and dynamically.

Sustainability is a many-headed beast. It requires comprehensive, dynamic solutions and the participation of local, federal, corporate, and individual action. Patagonia tries to incorporate all four. And it does so with an energy that's ratcheted up to match the urgency of the task at hand.

Recently, the company revised its mission statement. It used to read: "Build the best product, cause no unnecessary harm, use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis."

Today, it simply says, "We're in business to save our home planet."

'Why won't my Samsung Galaxy S10 charge?': 7 ways to fix your Galaxy S10 if it isn't charging properly

$

Samsung S10e

  • If your Samsung Galaxy S10 won't charge, there are a few different ways to fix it.
  • You should try to charge your Galaxy S10 with a different power source, charge it when it's powered off, and charge it wirelessly.
  • If those fixes don't work, you should check your Galaxy S10 for water damage, perform a factory reset, or contact Samsung customer support.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

As a general rule, your Galaxy S10 should work most of the time, charging up to 100 percent when you put it on a wireless charger or plug it into a USB-C charging cable.

But it's not uncommon to hear about Galaxy owners having trouble getting their phones to charge properly.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Samsung Galaxy S10 (From $899.99 at Best Buy)

SEE ALSO: We compared Samsung's Galaxy S10 and the Galaxy S10+ to determine which phone you should buy

Why your Samsung Galaxy S10 won’t charge, and how to fix it

When you're troubleshooting a technology problem with a lot of possible causes, you generally want to eliminate simple problems and test the most obvious problems first.

The problem might not be the phone, but the charger, so eliminate as many variables from this equation as possible.

If yours is refusing to charge and your battery level is dropping precipitously (or it's already completely dead), here are several ways to try to bring it back to life and figure out what the problem is.

Charge your phone with a fresh cable from a wall adapter

First, check the cable for obvious damage, and if there's any chance the cable is broken, try a different one. Err on the side of caution – keep in mind that a charging cable can have internal damage that isn't visible.

Also, try a different power source. It's convenient to charge your phone using a USB port on your computer, but there are a lot of possible issues here – the USB port might have blown, or it might not be able to deliver enough power to charge the phone.

Instead, plug the phone directly into the wall using an AC adapter to eliminate all the possible problems. If the outlet is "switched," be sure to turn it on so electricity flows to the phone.

Charge it while turned off

If your phone doesn't appear to be charging normally, one cause might be a misbehaving app or other software issue that's preventing the charging from working. Shut down your phone completely and try to charge it with the phone turned off.

To turn off your phone, press and hold the Side button for a few seconds until you see the power off, restart and emergency call buttons. Tap "Power off," and then tap the button a second time to confirm.

Clean your charging port

If it's still not charging at all using a charging cable, the USB port might be blocked. Inspect it for debris blocking the port, and if you see anything, try to clean it.

The directions in our article "How to properly clean your iPhone's charging port when it won't charge" generally apply here, though be very careful of the array of pins in the middle of the port.

If it's gotten wet, let it dry completely

Your Galaxy S10 is quite water resistant, though it's still possible that enough water gets in the charging port, it won't allow the phone to charge.

Most of the time, if this happens you should see an on-screen warning that moisture has been detected. Let the phone dry completely – give it 24 to 48 hours.

Read more:How to tell if your Samsung Galaxy phone is waterproof or water-resistant, and to what extent

Charge your phone wirelessly

If neither of those options yielded success, try to circumvent the charging cable and charging port.

If you have a wireless charging pad, place your Galaxy S10 on the pad and see if the battery will take a charge this way. If it does, you've narrowed the problem down considerably – you know that the battery can take a charge, and the problem has something to do with the USB port, cable, or wired power source.

If the wireless charger works, let it charge completely (remember that the Galaxy S10 charges slower when using a wireless connection). Then try to charge it with the USB cable again to see if reviving the battery fixed the problem.

Perform a factory reset

If you have tried all of these steps and nothing works, you might try one last fix yourself: perform a reset and then try to charge the phone after it has been reset to factory conditions.

This is relatively unlikely to solve the problem, especially if you tried to charge it while powered off, but this is the last possibility before seeking professional help.

You can perform a factory reset by following the instructions in our article, "How to 'soft' reset a Samsung Galaxy S10, or reset it to its factory settings."

Get your Galaxy S10 repaired

If your phone is only charging under certain circumstances – such as only wirelessly, or only wired – or none of those troubleshooting steps helped at all, then it's time to seek professional help. Contact Samsung customer support or your cellular service provider.

We kayaked to an abandoned fort in Portland, Maine, that's only accessible by private boat, and it's now completely overrun by nature

Fort Gorges 3.5

  • Fort Gorges is an abandoned fort on the coast of Portland, Maine.
  • Located on an island ledge, it's only accessible by private boat.
  • We took a tour with Portland Paddle, which included two hours of kayaking and an hour exploring the fort with tour guides.
  • Fort Gorges was built during the Civil War but was rendered obsolete by the time the war ended.
  • Used for mine storage until the end of World War II, the fort was later abandoned and is now overrun by nature.
  • The fort is falling apart, and the City of Portland, Maine, is hoping to restore it with the help of a fundraising organization called Friends of Fort Gorges
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

We took a tandem sea kayak to Fort Gorges from Portland, Maine, which is only accessible by boat.

To get to the fort, you do have to cross boat channels. Ferries, cruise ships, and lobster boats all cross steadily throughout the day.

Source: Portland Paddle

The total trip is about 2.5 miles. Maine's coast has dynamic sea conditions. This includes big tides and swift currents. When planning trips, time of day doesn't matter so much as these conditions, which can be calm as a pond or too windy for tours depending on the day.

Source: Portland Paddle

We had to wear life vests in case anyone capsized, especially since the tide is known for being so unpredictable.

Source: Portland Paddle

Located on Hog Island Ledge, Fort Gorges is a granite fort that is completely surrounded by water.

Source: Portland Paddle

Since there was another tour group at the launch where we were supposed to dock, we got to paddle around the perimeter of the fort while we waiting for them to disembark.

Source: Portland Paddle

This perk gave us the chance to see the exterior of the fort in great detail. The fort was made entirely of granite.

Source: Portland Paddle

The granite was quarried on the coast of Maine. Granite quarries were a huge industry on the Coast of Maine back in the 19th century.

Source: Portland Paddle

Going around the fort also gave us a chance to see the surrounding wildlife.

Source: Portland Paddle

Cormorants and gulls were perched on the rocks near the ledge. These birds live on ledges all over the coast of Maine.

Source: Portland Paddle

Once we arrived at the launch ...

... we docked our kayaks and removed our life vests ...

... and our tour guide led us to the entrance of the fort.

There was a warning sign in regard to fall hazards ...

... make that two warning signs.

The idea to build Fort Gorges came up after the War of 1812 when US coastal towns were deemed vulnerable to attack.

Source: "The Forts of Maine"

Construction on the fort began in 1858 and continued until the end of the civil war.

Source: Portland Paddle

The final design was an octagon with two sides omitted, forming the shape of a 'D.'

Source: "The Forts of Maine"

Fort Gorges looks a lot like Fort Sumner, except smaller, according to experts.

Source: "The Forts of Maine"

The fort was designed to hold two levels of canons — 28 canons on each level ...

Source: "Harbor Forts: Essays"

... and 39 guns on the roof.

Source: "Harbor Forts: Essays"

Although it was made to house 500 soldiers, Fort Gorges didn't actually end up housing any, aside from fort workers and their families.

Source: "The Forts of Maine"

This is because, by the time the fort was completed, new explosive technology rendered the fort obsolete.

Source: "The Forts of Maine"

Instead, Fort Gorges was used to store mines during the Spanish-American War, and it was used to store submarine mines during World War II.

Source: "The Forts of Maine"

After it was rendered obsolete, sod was added to the top-level to insulate it for the latest weaponry, but the project was never finished. Over time, vegetation has grown in that sodded area.

Source: Portland Paddle

The roof of the fort holds some treasures in its foliage, like this relic.

Source: Portland Paddle

This is a parrot rifle, and its the only Civil War relic that remains at Fort Gorges. All the other cannons from that time were sold for parts, but at 300 lbs, this one was too heavy and inconveniently placed to be moved. It was the biggest type of gun used during the Civil War.

Source: Portland Paddle

The roof also houses this solar panel, which was installed in the last 20 years and has one purpose — ...

Source: Portland Paddle

... to a power a light that shines on the American flag.

Source: Portland Paddle

After World War II, Fort Gorges was abandoned until 1960, when Portland, Maine, acquired it and added it to the National Register of Historic Places.

Source: "The Forts of Maine"

Today, the fort functions as a park. Tours are offered regularly, and sometimes events are hosted at the fort. We toured the fort with Portland Paddle.

Source: Friends of Fort Gorges, Portland Paddle

The inside of the fort is open to the public at your own risk, and being inside the fort helped us understand why …

... this place really is crumbling, with rubble and debris in some parts.

We entered this huge, cavernous room without any windows where gunpowder used to be kept. Without any lights, it was truly pitch black and a little eerie.

Luckily, we were able to use our phone flashlights, but our tour guide showed us that, back in the room where they stored gun powder, they had to put lamps from the other side of the wall into that opening to light the room ...

Source: Portland Paddle

... since you couldn’t bring a lamp into this room, which is called the Great Powder Magazine. This room is designed to stay dry and is located in a spot that isn't likely to be attacked. Lamplight + gunpowder wouldn’t have been a good mix.

Source: Portland Paddle

Without light, we would have been completely oblivious to signs of extreme damage and decay.

Some areas were extremely dark aside from slivers of light.

And even in the light, stalagmites and stalactites hang from the brick arches of the gun platforms.

According to the Press Herald, Fort Gorges is one of Maine's most endangered historic places.

Source: Press Herald

A lot of this has to do with location. Fort Gorges is totally exposed and located in the ocean. So not only has it been standing for 155 years ...

Source: Maine Preservation

… it’s also been enduring brutal weather that has impacted the foundation of the structure.

Source: Maine Preservation

If it continues this way without any plans for restoration ...

Source: Maine Preservation

… the site will eventually be deemed unsafe for visitors.

Source: Maine Preservation

In the summer of 2019, Friend of Fort Gorges started a fundraising campaign to raise $250,000 for the fort’s most time-sensitive repairs.

Source: Maine Preservation

But some have other ideas about the fort’s future. Developer and Portland resident Mike Dugay wants to commercialize the space.

Source: Press Herald

Dugay’s plan includes a restaurant, brewery, and eventually a bed and breakfast in the now-inaccessible historic officer's quarters. However, the idea wasn't supported by the public.

Source: Press Herald

Although Portland's city council has the final say in what happens to the fort, the public informally voted against commercial partners being involved with preservation.

Source: Press Herald

Instead, they voted for a combination of public and private partners including Friends of Fort Gorges to fund the preservation efforts on Fort Gorges.

Source: Press Herald

After finishing our three-hour tour that consisted of two hours of kayaking and one hour of exploring, we said goodbye to the group and headed to Highroller Lobster Co. in Portland, where we treated ourselves to another piece of Maine’s history — delicious lobster rolls.

  • Cashmere sweaters can be very expensive, but if you know where to shop, you can get high-quality sweaters for $100 to $300. These are the best places to shop for cashmere sweaters.
  • Everlane's no-frills basics are beautiful in their simplicity, and its affordable cashmere sweaters are no exception. You'll find basic, go-with-everything styles that are perfect for work or play.

I don't know about you, but I grew up thinking cashmere sweaters were the height of luxury. I remember a brief phase where my Christmas lists were populated with anything cashmere blend — socks, scarves, mittens. I thought owning something cashmere would make me feel like I'd made it somehow.

But more often than not "real" cashmere automatically equaled expensive.

Fast forward to 2018, when several brands are changing the game, offering up quality cashmere at pretty affordable prices. Luxury cashmere still exists and is sometimes worth it, but many of our favorite cashmere sweater brands truly won't break the bank. If you're open to your cashmere blended with other fabrics like cotton, you can spend even less.

Whether your priority is sustainability, affordability, wearability, or all of the above, you've got options. The brands on this list have one thing in common: gorgeous cashmere sweaters that will suit you all winter long, whether you're in the office or on-the-go. Your new and improved sweater wardrobe starts here.

Here are the best cashmere sweaters you can buy:

  • Best cashmere sweaters overall: Everlane
  • Best sustainable cashmere sweaters: Naadam
  • Best plus size cashmere sweaters: Land's End
  • Best luxury cashmere sweaters: Cuyana
  • Best colorful cashmere sweaters: J. Crew

The best cashmere sweaters overall

Everlane offers subtle updates on traditional cashmere sweater styles with a great $100 price tag, thanks to the brand's transparency model.

We talk about Everlane often around here. The brand's quality and attention to design is unparalleled, especially for the prices. Thanks to the company's transparency model, you get designer-level goods at mid-level cost to your wallet.

Everlane is our favorite place to get women's sweaters in general, and the cashmere range is no exception. Everlane's Grade-A cashmere from Mongolia runs from $100 to $155. The most popular and versatile style, The Cashmere Crew, is one of the cheapest and best options. It's also a favorite of newly-minted royal Meghan Markle, per InStyle.

It comes in tons of colors, from basics like charcoal gray and black to fun shades like mauve pink with mustard trimmed sleeves.

Insider Picks reporter Mara Leighton calls this sweater "a foundational closet piece." Shoppers tend to agree. It has a 4.7 rating on the Everlane website, based on 2,300+ reviews. Everlane cashmere has also been featured by InStyle, The Cut, People, Rank & Style, Racked, and Best Products.

Besides The Cashmere Crew, the brand puts its contemporary spin on other classic cashmere sweater styles like the boatneck, raglan, cardigan, and more.

Pros: Affordable Grade-A cashmere, modern takes on classic sweater styles, beautiful color selection

Cons: Limited size range, only available online or Everlane's New York City, Los Angeles, Palo Alto, and San Francisco showrooms

The best sustainable cashmere sweaters

If sustainability is a top concern, Naadam is about to become your new favorite sweater brand.

"Democratizing cashmere" is the tagline on the Naadam homepage and that's exactly what the brand sets out to do with its range of sustainable knits. One of Naadam's most popular items is a $75 crewneck cashmere sweater. Styles such as a long open-front cardigan and a wide-sleeved kimono are priced at $225.

In addition to 100% cashmere, the brand offers blended knits like wool cashmere, silk cashmere, and cotton cashmere.

The sweaters are mostly simple in design, but their means of production is unique. Sourced from Mongolian goats, Naadam's cashmere is hand-combed and produced in facilities powered by 100% clean energy. The brand also claims to pay herders "50% more than traditional traders." Cashmere that's as ethical as it is cozy? Sign us up!

Naadam has been featured by Insider Picks multiple times as well as publications like Racked, Fashionista, and Fortune. If you want guilt-free cashmere and far less cringeworthy prices than comparable quality, check them out.

Pros: Ethically sourced sustainable Mongolian cashmere, wide price range, lots of styles (not just sweaters), 100% cashmere and cashmere blends available

Cons: Only available online

The best plus-size cashmere sweaters

Land's End turns its flair for long-lasting classic designs to cashmere sweaters in a wide range of sizes.

Cashmere sweater options in plus sizes are unfortunately few and far between. Land's End has a variety of classic styles in a slightly superior size range to many cashmere sweater brands on the market.

Don't get me wrong — We sincerely hope all the brands on this list expand their size offerings. Until that happens, Land's End has a variety of relatively affordable cashmere sweaters that run up to size 3X. This isn't the brand for trendy knitwear, but it's ideal for stocking up on timeless cardigans, pullovers, and turtlenecks.

"Have six of these over years. Wear them all winter," writes one Land's End shopper who gives the Cashmere Cardigan Sweater a 5-star rating.

Soft, durable, and lovely — What more could you ask for in a knit? With tons of fun, bright color options, it's safe to assume you'll to find a Land's End cashmere sweater you can live in this winter.

Land's End cashmere has been recommended by People and InStyle.

Pros: Wider size range than most brands, classic styles, tons of colors

Cons: Not many trendy styles

The best trendy cashmere sweaters

J.Crew is your one-stop shop for fun cashmere sweaters that go beyond your average camel-colored pullovers.

If you want your cashmere sweater with a side of embellishment and whimsy, hit up your local J. Crew. The ultimate business casual purveyor produces some of the most delightfully tricked-out knits in the business.

Yes, you can take your pick of solid-colored turtle- and crewnecks at J.Crew's Cashmere Shop, many of which come in under $100.

But if it's pattern you crave, you're in the right place. Stripes, stars, hearts, cherries — the brand's current offerings have it all. Personally, I have my eye on this "Merci Beaucoup" emblazoned pullover and a ruffle-adorned cardigan.

J.Crew cashmere might not be as luxe in quality — as Racked points out, the brand doesn't reveal the grade — compared to some of the other brands on this list, but it's soft, fun, and won't break the bank. The brand's cashmere knits have been featured by Best Products, Rank & Style, People, and more.

Pros: Trendier options, affordable, tons of styles

Cons: Not transparent about cashmere grade so you don't quite know what you're paying for

The best luxurious cashmere

For premium cashmere that costs less than a full month's rent, check out Insider Picks-approved brand Cuyana.

You're going to pay more for really, really premium cashmere, that's just a fact of life. If you're ready to invest but don't want to shell out upwards of $1,000 for a turtleneck, check out Cuyana.

The brand's Cashmere Turtleneck Sweater is $495 — pricey, but cheaper than some brands offering comparable quality. According to Racked, the founder says it's "basically a $1,000 sweater" at half the cost, if that makes you feel better about the price tag. The lighter weight Open Cashmere Cardigan is more affordable at $225.

These are currently the only 100% cashmere offerings from the brand, but Cuyana also sells a number of cashmere blend sweaters, like turtlenecks, v-necks, and crewnecks. No matter which you choose, you won't want to take it off once the temperatures drop below freezing.

We love Cuyana here at Insider Picks and think you really can't go wrong with its beautiful, simple items that go with everything. The pieces are well-made and utterly wearable.

Pros: Luxe premium cashmere for half the cost of leading brands

Cons: Limited number of 100% cashmere styles available

The best winter coats for women

Part of the problem with finding a satisfactory winter coat is that it's really hard to tell whether a jacket will be warm enough for the dead of winter until you're wearing it in the dead of winter. Sure, the coat might seem cozy from the comfort of a dressing room. But is it really going to stand up to subzero temps once you bring it outside?

It's certainly possible to both be warm and look hip at the exact same time. Not every option on this list will appeal to everyone's individual aesthetic, of course, but they will all keep you warm without much of a style sacrifice. And that's pretty important.

FILE - This Sept. 12, 2018, file photo shows an Apple iPhone XR on display at the Steve Jobs Theater after an event to announce new products, in Cupertino, Calif. Security experts are calling a newly announced security vulnerability the worst yet affecting Apple’s iPhone. Google researchers say the mere act of visiting a small group of malware-infected websites was enough to allow attackers to steal sensitive information from iPhones, including text messages, photos and real-time location data. (AP Photo/Marcio Jose Sanchez, File)

Voice Memos are a great way to quickly record thoughts, music, bits of lectures, or anything else you may hear on the go.

Voice Memos can easily be edited, cropped, or added to later, and are therefore a favorite tool of writers, musicians, and other creative people.

After using the Voice Memos app on your iPhone to record something, there are several ways to transfer said voice memo to other devices.

Here are a few of the many ways to download Voice Memos from your iPhone.

Bernard Arnault made $5.1 billion in the past 3 days. These 5 mind-blowing facts show just how quickly the French billionaire's fortune is growing.

Bernard Arnault

Luxury conglomerate LVMH released an earnings report showing strong second-quarter sales on October 9. The ensuing stock surge earned CEO Bernard Arnault $5.1 billion in three days, according to Forbes.

The 70-year-old was the fourth-richest person alive at the start of 2019, according to Bloomberg. Since then, Arnault has made so much money that he displaced both Warren Buffett and Bill Gates to rank second, for a time, on both Bloomberg's Billionaires Index and Forbes Billionaires List. He has since returned to third place on the real-time Bloomberg ranking.

Most of Arnault's wealth comes from the 41% stake in LVMH he controls through his company Christian Dior, according to his profile in the Bloomberg's Billionaires Index. LVMH shares are up over 50% in 2019 so far, according to Forbes.

1. In January 2019, Arnault was ranked No. 4 on the lists of the world's richest people. Fast forward six months to mid-July and he had jumped two major spots, up to No. 2.

In January, Arnault was ranked fourth in both Bloomberg's Billionaires Index and Forbes Billionaires List, behind Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, and Jeff Bezos.

His net worth was $68.6 billion on January 1, according to Bloomberg.

Now, he's ranked third on the list and his net worth stands at $96.3 billion, according to Bloomberg.

2. In the first three months of 2019, Arnault added over $14 billion to his net worth — roughly the equivalent of drug lord El Chapo's entire empire.

By March, Arnault had already added over $14 billion to his net worth, pushing his net worth ahead of Buffett's according to Bloomberg.

Law enforcement estimates that El Chapo's entire drug empire is worth $14 billion, Business Insider previously reported.

3. Arnault is officially one of only six people to ever rank No. 2 on Forbes' list of the richest billionaires.

In July, Arnault overtook Bill Gates to become the second-richest person in the world, Business Insider reported.

Arnault is now one of only six people to ever hold one of the top two spots on Forbes' billionaires list, according to the magazine. The others are Bezos, Gates, Buffett, Zara cofounder Amancio Ortega, and Mexican telecom magnate Carlos Slim Helu.

4. Arnault has made more money in 2019 than anyone else listed in the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Bloomberg reported.

Arnault has made almost $28 billion so far in 2019, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

Bill Gates, for comparison, who currently sits in spot No. 2, has made $16 billion so far in 2019. And Jeff Bezos, who holds onto his spot as No. 1, has lost about $1 billion, according to the Index.

5. Arnault's personal wealth gains in the first six months of 2019 are on par with Apple's App Store and Google Play combined revenue in the same time period.

Arnault's wealth increased by $39 billion in the first six months of 2019. That's equivalent to Apple's App Store and Google Play combined revenue in the first half of 2019, as reported by TechCrunch.

Bernard Arnault made $5.1 billion in the past 3 days. French billionaires have made more money this year than their counterparts in any other country, and they partially have China to thank

$

Bernard Arnault lmvh

It's a good year to be a French billionaire.

Just look at LVMH chairman Bernard Arnault. A surge in LVMH share price grew Arnault's net worth by $5.1 billion between October 9 and 11, Forbes' Hayley Cuccinello reported. In March, Business Insider reported that Arnault overtook Warren Buffett as the world's third-richest person. And as of July 16, Bloomberg reported, Arnault overtook Bill Gates and now ranks as the world's second-richest person.

While Arnault has since returned to third place on Bloomberg's ranking, the shakeup marked the first time in history that Gates ranked lower than second place on Bloomberg's Billionaires Index. Arnault's net worth now stands at a reported $96.3 billion.

French billionaires got even richer in 2019

The personal fortunes of French billionaires have grown at more than twice the pace of the fortunes of their American and Chinese counterparts in 2019, Bloomberg found. The collective net worths of the 14 French billionaires on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index grew 35% between December 31 and July 17, while the net worths of American and Chinese billionaires grew 17% and 15% respectively.

Chinese billionaires may not have enjoyed the success of their French counterparts, but they may have helped create it, according to Bloomberg. Three of the 14 French citizens listed in Bloomberg's list of the 500 wealthiest people in the world have made their fortunes from luxury cosmetics and goods. The sector is booming, largely thanks to increasing Chinese demand.

Shares of LVMH, the luxury conglomerate headed by Bernard Arnault, jumped 47% in the first half of 2019, Markets Insider data shows. Kering, the parent company of Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent led by Francois Pinault, has seen its shares rise 29% since the start of the year. And shares of L'Oréal, of which Francoise Bettencourt Meyers owns a third, are up 25% this year. As a result, Arnault, Pinault, and Bettencourt Meyers added $53 billion to their combined net worths in the first half 2019, Bloomberg reported.

Read more:Bernard Arnault made $5.1 billion in the past 3 days. These 5 mind-blowing facts show just how quickly the French billionaire's fortune is growing.

The success of France's billionaires follows a turbulent 2018. European billionaires ended the year $2.3 trillion poorer, a 7% drop in their collective net worth, according to Wealth-X's 2019 Billionaires Census. In 2018, billionaires in North America fared better than those on any other continent, seeing a 5.3% drop in their collective net worth.
