  • Costco deals are a great way to save money — but they're not always obvious.
  • Business Insider asked Costco employees to share their top tips for saving money and making the most of your experience at the store.
  • From learning how to navigate the store to figuring out how to identify clearance items, here's some advice from Costco employees.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Costco's deals are a huge draw for many members.

The retail chain is known for hawking just about everything — and selling it in bulk.

Business Insider reached out to Costco employees to learn more about their top shopping tips, because it pays to shop armed with insider information. Thirty-five ended up sharing their best strategies.

One employee of four years suggested shopping for everything at the chain, which isn't that far-fetched of an idea, considering Costco sells cars, vacations, food kits for the apocalypse, yummy fast food, and even caskets.

"The deals are amazing," a Costco employee of four years told Business Insider. "Always think Costco first. From auto insurance, travel, mortgages, return policy, warranties — if you can get it through Costco, you absolutely should."

Here's what Costco workers had to say about how you can instantly improve your shopping experience.

Buy Kirkland

Kirkland products are the way to go, according to Costco employees.

Kirkland Signature — named for the chain's former headquarters in Kirkland, Washington — is Costco's private label.

"Buy Kirkland — it's cheaper and the same product as the name brand," a Costco employee who has worked for the store for five years told Business Insider.

An employee who's been with the store for 25 years agreed.

Don't hesitate

See something you like at Costco? Buy it. Don't hesitate.

That's what eight Costco employees told Business Insider. Seasonal items often disappear forever.

"Buy seasonal items when you can," one employee told Business Insider. "When they're gone, they're gone."

If you decide to sit on your hands, you might end up regretting it.

"Too many people come back looking for something we phased out," an employee of 10 years told Business Insider. "Buy it when you see it."

You can always return it later if you decide you don't want it.

Spring for the executive membership

A standard membership at Costco is $60 a year. An executive membership will cost you $120 a year and net you an annual 2% reward of up to $1,000 on your purchases.

Five Costco employees told Business Insider that they advised that customers spring for the executive membership.

"Come on," said one employee who has worked at the chain for six years. "You get 2% back on travel. Go to Hawaii. Make money."

Avoid the store on the weekends

"Do not shop on the weekends," said an employee who has worked at the store for 10 years. "Come on Tuesday. It's a ghost town."

An employee who has worked at Costco for three years added that if you're forced to come on a weekend, don't "expect a fast and easy trip."

You should also avoid the warehouse at certain points during the day.

"Always shop before rush hour, too," a Costco employee from Ontario told Business Insider. "A lot of people like to shop after they get off work."

But that's not the only time you should avoid Costco.

Another Costco employee told Business Insider, "I'll see 'avoid the store on the weekends' and raise 'especially on holiday weekends.'"

"Say that the Fourth of July is on a Sunday," the employee added. "A customer is shopping for snacks on Thursday and plans to return on Saturday for cheese and guacamole. I have seen this so many times."

That's a big mistake, according to the employee, who recommended just buying everything ahead of time to avoid "overcrowded parking lots, items selling out, and record long lines at the cash register."

Learn to navigate

Costco is well-known for its ever-changing, labyrinthine layout.

"I think people assume stuff isn't there when they can't find it right away," an employee with two years of experience told Business Insider. "Costco is a scavenger hunt. Just ask an employee for help. For the most part, we love helping if you're kind to us."

But employees shared a few things to keep in mind to help you get around easily.

"Be alert," an employee who has been with Costco for 10 years told Business Insider. "Most of our regular items stay in the same spot. The things that move are seasonal — furniture, flowers, and holiday decor."

A four-year Costco veteran told Business Insider that the best deals could usually be found at the end of the aisle.

When it comes to the clothing section, an employee with two years of experience said to check the signs to figure the sizes that are left so you don't have to "tear through the piles."

Lastly, a Costco employee from Minnesota said you should never assume that "every Costco carries the same items." Sometimes the reason you can't find the product you're looking for is that it's just not there.

Don't shop on an empty stomach

Never shop hungry — and definitely never shop at Costco hungry.

If you don't get sucked in by the food court, you could end up blowing your budget on bulk packages of goodies.

"Eat before you come," an employee with 10 years of experience told Business Insider. "You will spend $300 just on snacks because you're hungry."

Don't hurt yourself

An employee with 15 months of experience said to never attempt to lift a heavy object without help.

"Always look for someone in a red vest or find a manager who can call for help," they told Business Insider. "Employees are required to wear a name badge while on the clock, so you will be able to find someone just fine."

Don't leave money on the table

A Costco employee of two years said people who don't charge their Costco Visa card were "losing out on cash-back rewards, especially for big purchases."

An employee who has worked at Costco for 10 years agreed, saying the card is "awesome."

A Costco employee with four years of experience said to always take "advantage of the rebates through executive membership and the Citi card" and to not neglect mailers like Costco's monthly book of coupons.

"Make sure you get the coupon books every month," an employee from Washington told Business Insider. "The deals and savings available monthly are one of the best parts about Costco — and you thought it was cheap before."

Look out for the clearance items

An employee who has worked at Costco for 12 years said it wasn't a good idea to buy only items that are on sale, as "some sales are not a good value."

"Look for an asterisk or a 0.97 or 0.79 on the sale price," they said. "That indicates it is a clearance item."

One employee of 10 years told Business Insider that an asterisk could also indicate that the store won't be restocking the item.

How to add a stop on your Lyft ride, to run quick errands or drop someone off before your final destination

lyft driver

  • You can add a stop on your Lyft ride to help you easily run a quick errand or drop another passenger off.
  • However, Lyft asks that you keep your stop to less than 10 minutes of wait time for the driver, otherwise you should end the Lyft ride and call a new one.
  • Here's what you need to know to add a stop to your Lyft ride.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Rideshare apps can help those who don't have access to a vehicle get from point A to point B in a relatively comfortable and timely manner, depending on traffic. And, thanks to the extra stop feature on Lyft, it can also help you run errands along the way.

You can add a stop to regular Lyft rides, as well as those on Lyft XL and Lyft Lux.

However, the company notes that passengers should "set expectations by agreeing on wait time" before getting out at the first stop, and those who will be more than 10 minutes at a stop should request to end the ride and get a new Lyft when they are ready.

That way, drivers aren't stuck waiting around for too long. With that in mind, here's how to add a stop to your Lyft ride:

How to add a stop on Lyft

This is an easy enough task, and once you know how to add a stop you'll be able to do so quickly:

1. Open the Lyft app and log into your account, if needed.

2. Tap the destination bar, start inputting your first stop, and tap it when it appears.

1 HOW TO ADD STOP ON LYFT

3. Tap the destination bar again and select the plus sign next to the current "end" destination.

2 HOW TO ADD STOP ON LYFT

4. Input and select your final destination.

5. Pick the ride mode and tap "Select" to order your Lyft.

If you decide later on that you don't need to make an extra stop, you can get rid of it by tapping it and selecting "Remove stop."

The best milk frothers you can buy

$

  • If you love cappuccinos, you need a great milk frother.
  • After much research and testing, we found that the HIC Milk Creamer Frother is the best you can buy.

It's never been easier to make a perfect cup of coffee at home, but you need the right equipment to do it. If you're a big fan of cappuccinos and lattes with splendid milk foam, you're going to want a great milk frother in your collection of coffee-making products.

We've researched dozens of milk frothers and tested a few of them ourselves to find the best milk frothers you can buy. There are many different kinds of milk frothers: manual, stationary electric, and handheld electric ones.

We first tried the handheld electric frothers because they were relatively cheap. However, the handheld electric frothers rarely delivered on their promise of making milk creamy and frothy. Many of them also involve batteries, which can be annoying to constantly replace. As such, we haven't included any battery-based electric options in this guide.

There are plenty of stationary, plug-in electric milk frothers that will produce excellent foamy milk, and we've put the best ones in this guide. However, the best electric milk frothers are significantly more expensive than handheld electronic ones and manual ones.

After much testing, our best experience has been with manual milk frothers that cost less than $20. Since there's no electricity involved, you do have to froth the milk yourself by pumping the milk full of air inside the jug. You also have to heat the milk after you've frothed it, but you'll have more control over how hot it gets. Even though there is more work involved with manual milk frothers, you'll get the best results for the least amount of money.

We've included two great manual milk frothers as our top picks for most people, but if you're dead set on having an electric milk frother, we've included three recommended options ranging in price from about $40 to $130.

Here are the best milk frothers you can buy:

The best milk frother overall

The stainless-steel HIC Milk Creamer Frother whips up your milk for a beautiful foamy cappuccino or iced drink, for around $20.

You don't have to pay a fortune to enjoy a frothy, foamy cappuccino at home. The stainless-steel HIC Milk Creamer Frother costs approximately $20, but it produces the best milk foam of any milk frother we've tested.

The most well-loved feature of this simple manual milk frother is just how easy it is to clean. Many expensive electric milk frothers involve multiple parts that you have to wash and clean regularly. With the HIC frother, you just scrub out the stainless-steel jug with soap and water after every use and then wash the lid and mesh pump part.

Its stainless-steel design is also durable, so you don't have to worry about it breaking like you would with a glass manual milk frother.

I've made cappuccinos at home every day for the past six years with a Bialetti Stovetop Espresso Maker and the HIC Milk Creamer Frother, and this milk frother has never failed me.

It's all about the technique: I typically pour cold milk into the frother, froth it for 1-2 minutes, let it sit for a minute to thicken up, pour it into my ceramic milk pitcher, and heat it in the microwave for 45 seconds. The milk froth grows creamier and frothier as it heats until it's perfect for pouring over the espresso I have in my coffee mug. I've also used it to make frothy milk for iced drinks.

It's frequently recommended by reviewers as the best manual milk frother. Websites like Your Best Coffee Machine and Heavy also recommend the HIC Milk Creamer Frother. Many buyers on Amazon argue that it's often more effective than expensive electric frothers.

After much use (six years, to be exact), I revisited the product for another review. After all that time and trying other products, the HIC Milk Creamer Frother remains my favorite. It's affordable and, based on its longevity, quality is good. Read my review for my experience.

Pros: Inexpensive, easy to use, simple to clean, consistently makes great foamy milk, works with any kind of milk, froths cold milk for iced drinks

Cons: You have to heat the milk after you froth it

Check out our review of the HIC Milk Creamer Frother.

The second-best manual frother

The Bodum Latteo Milk Frother looks good on your kitchen counter and it makes excellent frothy milk, for less than $20.

If you want stylish manual milk frother, the Bodum Latteo is the one for you. It's made of borosilicate glass instead of stainless steel, so you can even pop the glass carafe into the microwave when you're done frothing the cold milk.

Bodum is a well-known brand that also makes French press coffee makers, so you know its products are trustworthy.

Just like the HIC Milk Frother, the Bodum model is very easy to clean. You simply wash the glass carafe like you would any other glass and scrub the lid and mesh pump clean. In comparison, many expensive electric milk frothers involve multiple parts that you have to wash and clean, which is a real hassle.

The only downside with Bodum's glass design is that you have to be more careful with it. The HIC milk frother is made of stainless steel so it won't break under most conditions, but this glass one could shatter.

To use Bodum's manual milk frother, you just have to follow the same technique we described for the HIC milk frother. Pour cold milk into the frother, froth it for 1-2 minutes, let it sit for a minute to thicken up, and heat it in the microwave for 45 seconds using the glass carafe the milk is in.

The milk froth grows creamier and frothier as it heats until it's perfect for pouring over the espresso in your coffee mug. You can also use it to make frothy milk for iced drinks.

The tech and reviews site Heavy recommends the Bodum Latteo Milk Frother as one of the best ones you can buy, and many buyers on Amazon say it's much better than any electric milk frother they've tried.

Bodum's Latteo milk frother is a steal for less than $20, especially when you compare it to the stationary electric milk frothers in this guide.

Pros: Glass design helps you see frothing progress, easy to clean, simple to use, consistently makes great foamy milk, works with any kind of milk, froths cold milk for iced drinks

Cons: You have to heat the milk after you froth it, glass is breakable

The best premium frother

The Breville Milk Cafe is the cream of the crop with its easy-to-clean design and thick milk foam production.

If you're dead serious about the milk foam on your morning latte and you're not afraid of dropping more than $100 on a fancy milk frother, the Breville Milk Cafe is the best one you can buy.

The most popular feature of the Breville Milk Cafe is that you can customize the exact temperature, type of foam, and amount of foam you want to create. Its circular dial lets you easily set the milk temperature from cold to 160 degrees Fahrenheit. A spinning magnetized disk creates the foam and induction heating warms the milk.

The stainless-steel jug is easy to clean because it separates from the heating base; you can even pop it in the dishwasher. Breville's Milk Cafe produces enough milk foam for three big cups of coffee, too, which is excellent if you have a family (or just like lots of foam).

Reviewers are in love with this milk frother's ability to also make hot chocolate. All you have to do is toss some chocolate into the milk as it heats and froths to make decadent hot chocolate.

Unlike manual frothers, the Breville heats the milk as it froths it up into foam, so there's no extra step. Many reviewers like the no-fuss process: You pour milk in and turn it on — done! According to reviewers, it's also quite durable, unlike other electric milk frothers.

Reviewers across the web agree that Breville's milk frother is the best premium electric model you can buy. HeavyLatte Art Guide, Coffee Gear at Home, and Espresso Gusto all highly recommend the Breville Milk Cafe frother. User reviews on Amazon are very favorable as well.

The only downside is that it costs $129.95, making it $113.30 more than our top pick, the manual stainless-steel HIC milk frother.

Pros: Easy to use, great milk foam production, heats the milk for you, simple to clean, make hot chocolate

Cons: Very expensive

The best versatile frother

The Nespresso Aeroccino 4 Milk Frother has many different settings so you can get your milk foam exactly the way you like it.

Nespresso is famous for its fancy coffee and easy-to-use espresso machines that use special pods to make the ultimate latte, but the company also makes a number of other coffee products for those who don't want to buy the whole machine. The new Nespresso Aeroccino 4 Electric Milk Frother is a great option for milk foam lovers.

It produces lovely thick, creamy foam for your latte. Nespresso improved the design on this new milk frother to include a handle for easy pouring and now, the entire body is made of stainless steel.

The design is slightly less easy to clean than Breville's nice jug style, but you just have to wash it by hand and gently scrub off any milk residue. Make sure to clean the Aeroccino4 every time you use it to keep the milk frother sanitary and in good working order.

The frother can make hot or cold milk foam and heat milk for lattes. The Aeroccino 4 uses induction heating to warm the milk and the magnetized spinning disk makes the foam. You can choose between two levels of foam density to make cappuccinos or lattes. Each setting has its own button, so it's easy to operate. On the downside, there's no temperature control like the Breville.

It's very easy to use, too. You simply pour the milk, press the button, and wait a few minutes for your foam. It automatically shuts off when you are done. I've tried a few lattes made with this milk frother at high-end kitchen stores, and I was impressed.

Pros: Multiple settings for different types of froth, hot or cold milk froth, nice design, stainless steel

Cons: A bit expensive, no adjustable temperature

Penthouses, mansions, and luxury ranches aren't selling across the US — and it could be a recession red flag

luxury home

  • There's an abundance of luxury real estate across the US, and it may be a warning sign for an upcoming recession, reported Robert Frank for CNBC.
  • New York City penthouses, Miami condos, LA mansions, and luxury ranches out west aren't selling.
  • But the picture is bigger than that: The wealthy are spending less overall in the US, from retail to houses, and it could threaten economic expansion, an economist told Frank.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

America's lingering luxury real-estate market is waving a red flag.

The wealthy aren't buying homes as much as they used to, leaving a surplus of empty high-end real estate across the US, reported Robert Frank for CNBC. According to Frank, luxury real estate hasn't been this bad since the financial crisis.

While tax changes play a role in this decline, it's also part of a broader trend in which the wealthy are saving more and spending less in luxury retail, classic cars, art, and houses — and it could "trickle down" to a recession, he said.

"If high-income consumers pull back any further on their spending, it will be a significant threat to the economic expansion," Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics, told Frank.

From NYC to LA, luxury real-estate markets across the US are seeing a slowdown.

In New York City, penthouses have been sitting on the market for months to years. Many of those properties eventually receive drastic price cuts or get carved into two smaller apartments, Business Insider's Katie Warren previously reported.

"Like any commodity, when the market is saturated with them, their value declines," Jason Haber, an agent at Warburg Realty in Manhattan, told Warren. "If under every rock you found a diamond, diamonds would decline in value. That's what is happening right now."

Read more: NYC has a penthouse problem, LA has a mansion problem, and Miami has a condo problem

Down south, luxury condos in Miami are sitting on the market a hair too long — some are taking four to six years to sell, Jerry Iannelli reported for the Miami New Times last year.

And out west, multimillion-dollar luxury ranches have been undergoing price cuts and sitting on the market for years, Katherine Clarke reported for The Wall Street Journal. While they held a wild west allure for previous generations, millennials find the ranches too labor-intensive and expensive, she wrote.

Consider the 16,000-square-foot California mountain estate, which comes with a fully operational buffalo ranch, that a $180 million lottery winner put up for sale last year, Warren reported. Originally listed for $26 million, it was cut by $6.9 million in August.

Clarke also said that Los Angeles has a glut of empty mega-mansions. Real-estate agents and developers are employing extreme measures to get those mansions off the market, from themed parties and gimmicky amenities to $100 million price cuts.

San Francisco is notorious for its overpriced housing market— 60% of tech workers there say they can't afford homes— and nowhere is that more evident than in a $40.5 million listing in Russian Hill, the most expensive listing in the city.

The home straddles two hillside lots and has six bedrooms and eight bathrooms, in addition to an array of terraces and wellness features, including an infinity pool, a wellness center, and a Japanese water-filtration system.

The Fire TV Stick 4K ($49.99), Amazon's streaming media stick, has made enjoying our favorite entertainment easy — maybe even too easy. If I ever tell you I'm busy, what's really happening is I'm at home, settled into a drama, comedy, or reality show. If not for the media streamer, I'd be stuck watching it on a tiny laptop screen, or paying excessive money for a cable subscription.

What is the Fire TV Stick 4K?

The Fire TV Stick is a USB stick-sized device that you plug into your TV. It lets you access shows, movies, and music from a variety of apps and services, including Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, and Spotify. It comes with a light and slim Alexa Voice Remote to navigate the menu.

Read more: I pay $12 a month for the ad-free version of Hulu even though it costs twice as much as a basic subscription, and I have no regrets

Fire tv stick

How does the Fire TV Stick 4K work?

Getting your Fire TV Stick set up only takes a few steps. You plug the stick into your TV's HDMI port, connect the stick to your nearest wall outlet, and then complete the set-up process on your TV screen.

Using the Fire TV Stick requires a Wi-Fi connection. The stronger and faster your connection, the better your viewing experience will be. If you experience Wi-Fi issues, you might want to use the included HDMI extender to improve reception.

Once you're on the main screen, you can sign into your various accounts (e.g. Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, Spotify, etc.). The media streamer is a great accessory to own if you live in a shared space because every person can contribute their individual account information and cover all the major streaming services. In my apartment, for example, we use my roommate's Netflix and Hulu accounts, my Prime Video and Spotify accounts, and my other roommate's CBS All Access account.

fire tv stick 2

All of them live on the main screen, which is easy and intuitive to navigate. You can go to individual apps and browse entertainment options there, or, if you're looking for a specific movie or TV show, you can search it directly from the homepage. The layout of all the pages and the user-friendly controls let you quickly find and watch the content you want, even if you've never used a media streaming player before. I don't consider myself a tech expert, but even I became comfortable with the Fire TV Stick after just a few uses.

As you use it, your most-visited apps will float to the forefront of all the app options, and you'll also be able to jump directly to shows or movies you recently watched or paused.

Since the remote has Alexa built in, you can control your viewing experience in fewer steps (you do still have to hold down the voice button on the remote in order to activate it). In case you temporarily lose the remote in the cracks of your couch, there's a Fire TV app that lets you control the TV through your phone.

What's the difference between the Fire TV Stick 4K and the original Fire TV Stick?

While the original Fire TV Stick only supports Dolby Audio and up to 1080p (HD) picture quality, the Fire TV Stick 4K supports Dolby Atmos and up to 4K Ultra-HD picture quality, including HDR, HDR 10, Dolby Vision, HLG, and HDR10+. This means your videos and movies are sharper and more vivid, and the audio (on select Prime Video titles) is more immersive.

The Fire TV Stick 4K is also faster and provides a smoother experience — it has a 1.7 GHz quad-core processor versus the original Stick's 1.3 GHz processor.

The bottom line

Whenever I'm home, I can start watching or listening to anything on the big screen in just 30 seconds. Watching an explosion-packed action scene or tear-jerking romance heart breaker becomes that much more immersive and enjoyable because of the Fire TV Stick 4K.

The small but powerful tech accessory always goes on sale during major retail holidays such as Prime Day and Black Friday/Cyber Monday, but even at its regular price of $50, it's a worthy purchase that you'll use over and over again.

Outrageous photos show how the kids of billionaires spend their parents' fortunes

Bill Gates Jennifer Gates

Children of billionaires have access to a world that many can't even begin to fathom.

Some, like Jennifer Gates, the daughter of Bill Gates, and Eve Jobs, the daughter of Steve Jobs, use their fortunes to pursue passions like schooling (both went to Stanford) and competing in equestrian events.

Holly Branson, Richard Branson's daughter, takes after her dad and loves to spend her money on experiences and adventures rather than material objects.

Others use their fortunes a little more lavishly — think vacationing around the world, exploring the seas by yacht, stocking closets with designer clothes, and partying it up in the city. Tiffany Trump and Alexa Dell both have a taste for finer fashion and seeing the world, while Larry Ellison's son, David Ellison, loves to get around in style, like via jet or snowboard.

Here are some of the outrageous ways the children of billionaires spend their money.

Tuft & Needle’s newest mattress is a more supportive and breathable upgrade from its original — I've been sleeping on it for 4 months and never want to get out of bed

tuft and needle mint mattress

  • Tuft & Needle's Mint Mattress (currently $100 off for $495-$1,045) improves on the online brand's popular original mattress by adding more support, breathability, and coziness throughout.
  • The top layer's Adaptive Foam construction, particular to Tuft & Needle products, is a standout feature. It combines the contouring comfort and pressure relief of memory foam with the breathability and bounciness of latex.
  • Graphite and open-cell foam technology make it cool to sleep on, even during the summer, while the plush, knitted cover gives the mattress an added element of soft comfort.
  • Since switching to this mattress, I've fallen asleep faster and stayed asleep for longer — a wonderful albeit sometimes dangerous effect.

In the last few months, my punctuality at work and social events has taken a dip. It's not because of train delays or because I lost my watch. It's just so much harder getting out of bed now that I'm sleeping on Tuft & Needle's Mint Mattress (currently $100 off for $495-$1,045).

Only the second mattress release from the popular brand, it'll quickly wrap you up in its soft and comfortable embrace. If you want to try to get work done while sitting in this bed, here's my recommendation: don't. My experience with the mattress is that you'll simply end up horizontal, slumped into an impromptu nap.

Read on for details of my Mint Mattress experience, from initial set-up to night after night of sweet slumber.

tuft and needle mint mattress 2

My review of the Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress, a follow-up to a customer favorite

The Mint mattress is an upgrade from the company's best-selling original mattress, a 10-inch, medium-firm mattress with almost 6,000 five-star reviews on Amazon and more than 100,000 total reviews on the Tuft & Needle website

Comparatively, the Mint Mattress is a little thicker at 12 inches tall, but also softer, cooler, and better for pressure relief. The company recommends the Mint if you're a side sleeper or you run hot while sleeping. With more support on its sides, the Mint is also good if you often sit on the edge of your bed.

Unpacking and setting up the Mint Mattress

The mattress comes rolled up and packed tightly in a box. I tested the Full size, which weighed 66 pounds and admittedly wasn't fun to carry up the stairs of my fourth floor walk-up (another set of hands will definitely help if you live in a similar situation). However, once I got the mattress up to my room, the rest of the set-up process was much easier.

After I cut through the plastic wrap, the mattress unfurled and rose to its full size. Though the company says there may be a new mattress smell, I personally didn't notice one. Regardless, this potential smell is a result of the packaging process, not chemicals. The mattress is CertiPUR-US and Greenguard Gold certified, so it's free from harmful chemicals and gases.

What it's like to sleep on the Mint Mattress

I positioned the mattress on my new Zinus bed frame, threw on one of my favorite sheet sets, and slept on it that same night. Tuft & Needle gives you 100 nights to test out its mattresses risk-free. If you don't end up liking it, you'll get a free refund and the company will also coordinate free pickup and send it to a donation location of your choice.

I, for one, won't be returning my Mint Mattress. It's incredibly comfortable, supportive, and adaptive to both the way my body moves and the changing temperatures of my room.

The mattress features Tuft & Needle's signature Adaptive Foam, which contours to your body and provides pressure relief like memory foam, but is also breathable and bouncy like latex. This top-layer construction combines all the features many sleepers look for and is what also makes the original mattress and its Pouch bean bag chair so invitingly comfortable.

In the Mint Mattress, the Adaptive Foam is further enhanced by 30% more graphite, which maximizes its cooling abilities. Meanwhile, "open cell foam technology" allows air to flow freely through the mattress and improves breathability, so you won't overheat like you would on a memory foam mattress.

tuft and needle mint mattress 3

Even as the weather has gotten exponentially warmer, my body hasn't while sleeping on this mattress. It has a soft and thick knit cover with a bit of texture you can feel through your sheets — cozy and comforting, and something that sounds perfect for colder temperatures. But, surprisingly, this cover doesn't get overwhelming or hot in the summer, and that's because of the rest of the mattress' cooling and breathable design.

Between the Adaptive Foam layer and base layer, there's a transition layer filled with gel beads that add more support. The base layer is the most firm and gives better edge support. Instead of sinking downwards every time I roll too closely to the edge or I perch on my bed putting on my shoes, the mattress seems unaffected by the shift in weight.

The core of the mattress is of course also supportive. I sleep in all sorts of positions (side, stomach, back), and each feels comfortable. I've found that I'm also able to rest on my side for longer periods of time than on my previous mattress. If you sleep with a partner, the mattress is firm and adaptive enough that you won't disturb the entire bed when you reposition yourself or get out of bed early in the morning. Overall, the mattress simply feels stable yet comforting, which is exactly what you want to collapse into at the end of a long day.

Final thoughts on the Mint Mattress

My first introduction to Tuft & Needle was its Pouch bean bag chair, which remains one of my favorite products I've ever tested. I shouldn't have been surprised that its flagship product, its mattress, would be a hit, too. From the very first night, it proved to be supportive, breathable, and comfortable, and it's been consistently so in the few months I've been testing it. Although only time will tell how it continues to perform, my experience so far has been virtually complaint-free.

  • You can use your Fitbit sleep data to look for ways to improve your sleep performance, or monitor sleep for changes in your sleep that you may want to discuss with your doctor.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Most Fitbit activity monitors come with built-in sleep monitoring that works automatically — there's no need to tell your Fitbit you're going to bed, as it will just sense it.

Fitbit uses several methods to detect that you're asleep. When you haven't moved in about an hour, it assumes you're asleep, but it confirms this by measuring small movements (like rolling over in your sleep) as well.

If there's a heart rate monitor built into your Fitbit, it combines heart rate and movement data to develop a more accurate picture of your sleep cycle.

Fitbit doesn't just track your overall sleep, but your sleep stages as well. A complete sleep cycle contains several stages, such as light sleep, deep sleep, and REM (rapid eye movement) sleep.

Certain Fitbitsestimate these stages using "beat-to-beat changes in your heart rate." This is called heart rate variability (HRV), which is known to vary between light, deep, and REM sleep.

How to check your Fitbit sleep statistics

After you wake in the morning, you can review the information Fitbit has recorded about your sleep.

Start the Fitbit app on your phone and wait for it to sync. You can see your overall sleep time on the Today page. This is the time Fitbit believes you were asleep the previous evening, not including any time you were restless or woke up during the night.

sleep 1

Tap the sleep entry to go to the detailed Sleep page. At the top of the page, you'll see a graph that shows how you slept for the last week.

Swipe the graph to see three tabs: how long you slept each night, your sleep schedule (the hours you were asleep), and a summary of your sleep stages.

sleep 2

Below the graph is a list of your individual daily sleep cycles. It displays much more detail about your sleep stages throughout the night.

To see this in more detail, tap the day you want to view. On the detailed page, you can also compare your actual sleep to a "benchmark" of how the average person of your age and sex sleeps.

sleep 3

What you can do with Fitbit sleep information

Sleep monitoring is designed to help you assess if you're sleeping a healthy amount, and to improve your sleep.

You can use the information to look for trends, like if you consistently don't get enough sleep, or sleep restlessly and wake up often during a night's sleep.

It's also useful for spotting changes in your sleep. If you usually sleep well but have started to see a change in the quality of your sleep cycles, that might be an indication something is wrong, and you can try to change your sleep habits or have a discussion with your doctor.

Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch is on the market for nearly 70% off its original price. Here's a look inside the 2,700-acre property with its sprawling mansion and Disney-themed train station.

Michael Jackson's famed Neverland Ranch is back on the market for $31 million, less than half of its previous listing price of $67 million.

In 2015, the 22,700-acre property hit the market for a whopping $100 million under a new identity as Sycamore Valley Ranch.

But the 12,598-square-foot French-Normandy style residence located in Los Olivos, California sat on the market for two years before its price was slashed to $67 million in 2017.

Jackson, who bought the property for $19.5 million in 1987, defaulted on a loan after financial hardships and entered Neverland into an ownership agreement with private investment firm Colony Capital in 2008 for $23 million, according to ABC News.

After millions of dollars in renovations, the 2,700-acre ranch boasts a main residence with five bedrooms and eight bathrooms, two guesthouses, a four-acre lake, a 50-seat movie theatre, a tennis court, a 14-foot lagoon-style pool, a dance studio, barns, and separate staff facilities.

The listing is held by Suzanne Perkins and Kyle Forsyth of Compass.

For $31 million, the King of Pop's former home could be yours, although you'll have to pass "extensive prequalification," according to The Wall Street JournalHere's what Sycamore Valley Ranch has to offer.

April Walloga and Alyson Penn contributed to an earlier version of this story.

A website that revealed personal information about porn actors has been shut down by a porn company: 'We simply didn't want it out there for the world to see anymore'

Bang Bros. / Pornwikileaks hard drives

  • A website named PornWikiLeaks was set up with the specific purpose of revealing the names of actors involved in the pornography business.
  • This week, the site was abruptly shuttered and replaced with a message from the porn production company Bang Bros. stating it had been purchased with the intention of taking down the data.
  • "We have purchased this site with the intention of shutting it down and removing all information associated with it. There's no catch. No hidden thing to getting your personal stuff off of it. We simply didn't want it out there for the world to see anymore," the message says.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

On Wednesday, a website named PornWikiLeaks went offline and was replaced with a message: "We have purchased this site with the intention of shutting it down and removing all information associated with it," the message reads. "There's no catch. No hidden thing to getting your personal stuff off of it. We simply didn't want it out there for the world to see anymore."

In a surprising twist, the message is attributed to the porn production company Bang Bros. — a move intended to end PornWikiLeaks' distribution of "phone numbers, addresses, even family members names" of porn actors, according to the message.

PornWikiLeaks/Bang Bros. statement

According to a WHOIS registry of the site, registration was updated the same day that the statement attributed to Bang Bros. was posted: August 29.

In addition to the statement, a video was posted of computer hard drives labeled "pornwikileaks" being covered in lighter fluid and lit ablaze.

A number of questions remain in the wake of the site's closure:

  • Who owned PornWikiLeaks, and who sold it to Bang Bros.?
  • Where are the hard drives from?
  • How much did it cost?
  • Did Bang Bros., itself a subsidiary of several layers of holding companies, always own PornWikiLeaks, and do this as a publicity stunt?

None of that is clear.

Swedish erotic film director Erika Lust highlighted the good and the potential bad in an email to Business Insider.

"Bang Bros.' decision to buy the site and remove all of the data was a brilliant move and a sign of solidarity with an industry that is stigmatized and heavily mistreated by society and media outlets. I applaud it. PornWikileaks was a disgusting website that endangered so many performers and other people working in the industry," Lust said.

"It's important to be aware, though, that Bang Bros. is part of a big network which is owned by WGCZ S.R.O, which also owns tube sites like XVideos.com and Xnxx.com. Companies like WGCZ S.R.O and the Mindgeek conglomerate, owner of the very famous Pornhub, have achieved a monopoly through backward vertical integration and horizontal integration, by taking over the supply chain and production path of pornography. This has been detrimental and also very harmful to every single player in the industry destroying the livelihoods of performers and creators," she said.

Bang Bros. representatives did not respond to a request for comment as of publishing.

Renters in Lower Manhattan may be able to collect up to 6 years worth of back rent, according to a court ruling in June

new york city apartments manhattan

  • A program that lasted from 1995 to 2006 offered tax breaks to developers in Lower Manhattan who in return would restrict rent increases, according to a 2016 report from the nonprofit newsroom ProPublica.
  • However, the rent limits were interpreted, by developers and those who enforced the law, to apply only to apartments with monthly rents under $2,000.
  • ProPublica found that 75% of all the apartments built under the program were subjected to rent increases.
  • In June, the New York Court of Appeals ruled in favor of tenants from two Lower Manhattan buildings who argued that their apartments should have been rent-stabilized under the program.
  • In light of the ruling, current or former tenants of buildings that benefited from the program may be eligible to receive up to six years of back rent.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

In 1995, a program called 421-g was put in place in an attempt to fill Lower Manhattan with more residents, according to a 2016 report from ProPublica's Marcelo Rochabrun.

The program issued multimillion-dollar tax breaks to developers who converted office buildings into apartments. In return, the developers would restrict rent increases.

According to Rochabrun, the approved program included a letter from the New York City mayor, Rudolph Giuliani, stating that rent stabilization should only apply to those who paid less than $2,000 a month for an apartment.

Read more:A former NYC drug cop who bought his first property for $22,000 now has a $400 million real-estate portfolio, and he says he doesn't even track the value of it

The letter was read into record and, according to Rochabrun, accepted as the common interpretation of the law. As a result, 75% of all the apartments built under the program have been subjected to rent increases, Rochabrun reported.

While the program ended in 2006, according to Rochabrun, many developers are still benefiting from it. In fact, he reported that the city lost around $75 million in tax revenue in 2015 as a result of the program.

Lawyers and tenants are now arguing that the program was misinterpreted. A program that was intended to pair tax benefits with rent regulation, according to reports, did the opposite in most cases.

Now, 0ver two decades later, tenants are fighting back.

According to the New York-based news outlet The City, in June, the New York Court of Appeals ruled in favor of tenants from two Lower Manhattan buildings who argued that since the owners benefited from the 421-g tax breaks, the rents of their apartments should have been stabilized.

In light of the ruling, current or former tenants of the Lower Manhattan buildings that received tax breaks because of the program may be able to collect up to six years of back rent, The City reported.

An analysis conducted by the news outlet found that 39 buildings received tax benefits from the program between 1995 and 2006.

But the fight for back rent isn't the only lawsuit that has loomed over New York's real-estate industry this year. As Business Insider previously reported, in January, a $21 million lawsuit was filed in New York accusing various real-estate brokers of using Airbnb to illegally rent over 250 listings to nearly 76,000 unknowing guests.

Jeffrey Epstein's 'Orgy Island' is becoming a tourist attraction in the Caribbean — here's what the curious visitors are able to see

Little st. James

Jeffrey Epstein's private island in the Caribbean — now dubbed "Pedophile Island" and "Orgy Island" by locals, according to the Los Angeles Times— has gained worldwide media attention for its troubling ties to the sexual-abuse allegations against him.

According to court filings, Epstein, a convicted sex offender, was accused of trafficking underage girls to the island for sex. Up until his arrest in July 2019, the private island was considered his primary residence.

Since Epstein's July arrest and subsequent death by apparent suicide on August 10, the island has become a tourist attraction, Business Insider previously reported.

John Stewart, the owner of a boat-tour agency on St. Thomas, also told reporters that, over the past few weeks, he has seen a large increase in the number of catamarans sailing by Epstein's island.

"No one used to pay attention to it," Stewart told the Los Angeles Times. Now, he says, in light of Epstein's media attention, there are a lot more tourists.

But even from that distant vantage point, there is a lot to be seen — including a temple-like structure and life-size plastic cows.

How to turn off a Fitbit Charge HR to conserve battery, or quickly restart it for troubleshooting

fitbit charge hr

Fibit didn't make it easy to turn most of their trackers off. And that makes sense, as a Fitbit can only do its job — namely, tracking all your biometric data — if it's actively running.

But should you want to turn off a Fitbit Charge HR, whether to save battery, to comply with security regulations, or because you simply don't want it tracking you for a while, you can force a Charge HR to power down.

Turning off a Fitbit Charge HR can also help fix it when the device begins to lag or has connectivity issues. If this is the case, you can also try giving it a quick restart.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Fitbit Charge HR (From $79.94 on Amazon)

How to turn off a Fitbit Charge HR

To turn a Fitbit Charge HR off, plug its power supply into the back of the tracker, then hold down the side button for 10 to 12 seconds.

The screen will go dark. The Fitbit is now off, and can be unplugged and set aside until you want to turn it back on, which you can do using the very same button.

How to restart a Fitbit Charge HR

If you just want to restart your Fitbit Charge HR, then connect it to its power supply, and hold its button until the tracker vibrates and displays an icon on the screen.

This means it has restarted, and should work properly.

We used Rent the Runway Unlimited to rent $4,862 worth of designer clothes in a week — here's how the subscription plan works and why we're so willing to pay the $160 monthly fee

$

Rent the Runway unlimited 4x3

  • Rent the Runway Unlimited lets subscribers order an endless rotation of designer apparel (clothes, bags, earrings, etc.) for a flat fee of $159 per month.
  • Five women on the Insider Picks team pay for monthly subscriptions. To show you how the service works and what value we personally get out of it, three of us show the outfits we rented over the course of a week.
  • If you choose to try the service, you can get your first two months for $119 each with the code "FF80" at checkout.

Rent the Runway has been dubbed one of the most disruptive companies in the world— but how does a company that rents out designer fashion rank alongside Uber, Airbnb, and Elon Musk's ambitious, futuristic aerospace company, SpaceX?

To the envy of its peers in an increasingly challenging retail space, the answer is, in part, its subscriptions. Rent the Runway was once the underground life hack for renting a $500 cocktail dress for $75 for a wedding. But as of 2018, both its then-two-year-old subscriptions — RTR Update (four items per month, $89) and RTR Unlimited (unlimited rentals of four items at a time, $159)— already reportedly accounted for more than 50% of the company's total revenue, and were up 150% year-over-year. Instead of a one-off rental, RTR customers today seek a better, more sustainable alternative to shopping.

On the Insider Picks team alone, five women pay the $159 monthly fee for a Rent the Runway Unlimited Subscription (and you can find three of our personal reviews and pictures of outfits we rented in a week below).

How Rent the Runway Unlimited works

Rent the Runway Unlimited lets its members rent an unlimited amount of designer clothes on a rotating basis every month — including everything from handbags to work clothes to patterned sundresses to statement earrings. It's $159 per month, but your first month will only cost $99.

Members can pick up to four items per rental and then return them whenever they want to swap out for a new style, or just keep them all for the entire month. There's no set return deadline with the membership, as long as you continue to pay by the month, and you don't have to wait until you've worn all four items to return one of them. All orders have free shipping, the membership includes insurance for minor mishaps and general wear and tear, and RTR takes care of the dry cleaning.

To return an order, members will pop the clothes back into the garment bag they came in, swap in the prepaid return label, and drop the bag to any UPS store or their designated drop-boxes. Once Rent the Runway has received the returns, members are notified that they can make new selections — and they're directed to a page full of options available for same-day or next-day delivery.

The selection is huge — for instance, 31 pages of daytime dresses alone available for delivery to me tomorrow in Manhattan. Members can narrow the options down by size, body type, occasion, color, etc., and they'll also be able to see which options they've previously "hearted" that are now available for delivery. RTR will also curate personalized suggestions they think you'll like based off your previous rentals.

To show you what Rent the Runway Unlimited is like in real life, three subscribers take you through one week of their rentals:

Sally: one week with RTR Unlimited

The overall retail cost of clothes: $2,460

Left:Jill Sander Navy Tented Green Shirtdress, $750 retail

Second to Left: Veronica Beard Moroso Dickey Jacket, $650 retail

Right: MDS Stripes Sleeveless Peasant Dress, $545 retail

Second to Right: Osman Amelia Stripe Dress, $515 retail

I've been paying for an RTR subscription since November-ish (sometime in early winter, at least), so I've used it in all kinds of weather. I love it year-round, honestly — in the winter, I rent cute coats and sweaters, and during the rest of the year, I love using it for flouncy, fun dresses I'd never otherwise buy.

You wouldn't know it from the clothes I rented, but my closet is almost exclusively made up of neutral black, white, navy, and cream-colored clothing. RTR lets me be a little bolder and more experimental with my choices (bubblegum pink? Who have I become?!).

One thing I love is that RTR users can upload photos of themselves in the clothes they rented and leave reviews about the fit, and you can sort by people who have similar body types to you. I rarely order an item unless I see pictures first because it helps me make a better call about fit.

Most importantly, though, is that it's helped me quit fast fashion and generally shop less. I know I can always find something chic and fun on RTR that feels current and trendy, so I'm much less tempted to pop into Zara. Instead, I spend my money on basics and classics that I'll wear for a long time.

Mara: one week with RTR Unlimited

The overall retail cost of clothes: $1,502

Left: A.L.C. Dane Skirt, $295 retail; Kooreloo Blue Petite Bag, $325 retail

Second to left: Louna Floral Smocked Waist Blouse, $92 retail

Right: Susana Monaco Strap Back Tube Jumpsuit, $220 retail

Second to right: Solace London Colorblock Manon Dress, $570 retail

If you had told me I'd be happily spending $16o on a clothing subscription every month only a year ago, I would have laughed. My other subscriptions are few and unanimously priced under $10: a joint Hulu x Spotify, my favorite publications, and Scribd

But RTR Unlimited actually winds up saving me money. Instead of spending around that amount on cheaper, underwhelming clothes that clutter my closet and end up in a donation bin later, I've almost entirely stopped external shopping. I have more closet space. I've finally donated so-so blouses I thought I needed. Rather than buying to fill gaps in my closet, I rent for those needs and use the flexibility of the subscription to only buy the things that I'll still want to own in five years. In the end, I have nicer clothes to wear every day and my non-RTR closet is less cluttered and of a higher overall quality. I also get to "shop" habitually (which is a hard habit to break) without contributing to the waste of the fashion industry.

I pause it sometimes in the winter, but Unlimited is at its peak usefulness in the summer. There are plenty of weddings, reunions, vacations, and gatherings to go to, and the color palettes are even more bright and patterned — and therefore memorable — than any other season. It's hard to afford multiple $200 sundresses, and tough to decide which patterns you'll wear enough to make the purchase worth it. RTR Unlimited is how I afford to wear new designer clothes out on Friday nights, dates, and to yet another wedding reception — and never pay for dry cleaning.

Remi: one week with RTR Unlimited

The overall retail cost of clothes: $900

Left: RED Valentino Blush Polka Dot Top, $550 retail

Middle: Proenza Schouler White Label White Denim Culottes, $350 retail

After hearing so many rave reviews from coworkers and friends, I decided to give Rent the Runway Unlimited a try. The trial is too good of a deal to pass up — $60 for a month of unlimited designer clothing — and after just one month I was happy to pay full price ($160 a month) for the service.

I love shopping and trying new styles, and like to splurge on luxury pieces every now and then. But, in true New York fashion, my closet is not big enough to house a continual stream of new purchases. I'm at capacity and I'm not about to pull a Carrie Bradshaw and turn my oven into a shoe rack. Rent the Runway is the perfect way to test out new trends, wear pieces that you wouldn't usually buy, and keep your wardrobe constantly fresh. The service has solved my "closet full of clothes but nothing to wear" conundrum by providing me with cute new pieces whenever I want.

I definitely have had some misses — just like any online shopping experience, sometimes things don't fit or you end up not liking them in person. But, RTR makes it easy to return and swap out those "meh" pieces for ones you really love. I'm ultimately saving money, getting to experiment with my style, and I wear pieces that are way out of my budget. Honestly, online shopping is a lot more fun when everything costs $0 (sort of).

Recent price cuts to multi-million-dollar properties include Michael Jackson's Neverland and an empty Beverly Hills plot, but they are not alone.

In the past year, Business Insider has reported almost a dozen massive price reductions on mega-mansions and penthouses. The latter sometimes results in the sale of separate apartment units, which are more marketable than the full complex.
