Health-Ade makes the best-tasting kombucha we've tried so far

Health Ade

  • Kombucha is a rapidly growing industry, with US sales nearing $700 million in 2018. Health-Ade is one of brands leading the growth of this functional fermented tea.
  • It launched in 2012 as a local favorite at Los Angeles farmers markets. Today, it's one of the fastest growing functional beverage brands in the US and brews 120,000 bottles of kombucha a day.
  • It's also our favorite kombucha brand because it comes in many delicious flavors, which are made only with cold-pressed juice from organic produce bought from local farms, and isn't as sour or vinegar-like as other brands.

Kombucha — the mere mention of this fermented beverage is enough to cause faces to contort into grimaces, or conversely, eyes to light up with excitement.

Lately, it seems like the latter is more true. Total US cross-channel sales reached approximately $689 million in 2018, with sales in convenience stores growing 71% to around $23.3 million.

If you've checked out the refrigerated beverage aisle at your supermarket or corner bodega lately, you've probably seen — and been overwhelmed by — the rows and rows of colorful bottles of kombucha. The three biggest players fighting for control of the US kombucha market are GT's Living Foods, KeVita and Health-Ade.

Of those three, Health-Ade is my favorite.

About Health-Ade

Health-Ade Kombucha is cofounded by Daina Trout, who began brewing kombucha at home while pursuing her Masters' degrees in Nutrition and Public Health at Tufts University. In 2012, she, her husband, and her best friend started selling bottles of the apartment-brewed drink at local farmers markets in Los Angeles.

These homegrown beginnings are still present in how the company, which was the fastest growing functional beverage brand in 2018, operates today. The kombucha is brewed in small batches in 2.5 gallon glass jars, though Health-Ade now ferments at a much higher rate of 60,000 jars a week.

A functional beverage is any drink containing added ingredients that claims to provide specific health benefits. In the case of kombucha, these benefits may include improved digestion due to the increased presence of healthy bacteria and blood sugar control due to the antioxidant qualities of the green tea. That being said, there hasn't been a lot of substantial studies about the benefits of kombucha.

The plain, original flavor contains just four ingredients — black or green tea, sugar, a starter of aged kombucha, and scoby, which is the culture of bacteria, yeast, and enzymes that turns the sweet tea into tart and bubbly kombucha tea.

Health-Ade's many delicious flavors include Pink Lady Apple, Pomegranate, Blood Orange-Carrot-Ginger, and a newly released Cherry Berry. They're made only with cold-pressed juice from organic produce bought from local farms, and among its many certifications, Health-Ade is USDA-certified organic and Non-GMO Project-verified.

Take a sip of Health-Ade

I always like trying out new drinks, whether it's lemonade or a cold-pressed juice. Kombucha is one that's really piqued my interest in the last couple of years because of its divisive taste.

I've tried various kombucha brands both national and local, but the only one I've unequivocally enjoyed was Health-Ade.

It doesn't have as strong of a sour, vinegar-like taste as other brands, and it's bubbly and refreshing. Each 16 ounce bottle contains less than 100 calories, and different amounts of sugar and carbs depending on the flavor.

The cold-pressed brews are enticing, and the kombucha is said to help aid digestion thanks to the naturally occurring probiotics and organic acids that result of the fermenting process. There's also a Superfood line made with "functional and botanical superfoods" such as maca root which purportedly helps increase energy, spirulina for antioxidants, and wheatgrass which is believed to be super nutrient-dense, giving your body even more benefits than kombucha alone. But like kombucha itself, there hasn't been a ton of substantiated studies that back up these superfood claims.

Other members of the Insider Picks team love Health-Ade despite the gray science claims. One editor didn't seem interested when he noticed I was opening a box of kombucha samples, but practically ran over once I specified that they were from Health-Ade.

I would call myself an entry-level kombucha drinker — as in, I'm happy having a bottle once every couple of weeks — so I thought the 16-ounce bottles were a bit large for me and I usually couldn't finish the entire bottle in one sitting.

If you drink at my pace, know that the fizziness will be weaker the next day, but the drink will still taste great.

health ade kombucha 2

Health-Ade's impact

By being USDA-certified organic, the company is helping support healthy ecosystems, and it also provides better conditions for farmers.

Health-Ade composts all of its organic matter, including tea bags, juice pulp, and scoby. Since starting its composting program in May 2017, it has diverted more than 2.5 million pounds of waste from landfills. In 2018 alone, it composted more than 1 million pounds of organic waste. It has also upcycled more than 1,000 bottles into soap dispensers and small herb gardens.

If you're looking for a new kombucha brand to try, Health-Ade is our favorite and the one we recommend the most. The taste is not too sour, all the flavors are delicious, and it's a nice afternoon pick-me-up. It also only uses local and organic ingredients, and gives back to the community by composting and upcycling.

Amazon Prime Day 2019 app 4x3

Amazon Prime Day may be a made-up holiday invented by the retail behemoth, but it's surely something worth celebrating.

For a day or two each year, Prime members get exclusive access to hundreds of thousands of deals on the site. While Amazon Prime offers many perks, Prime Day's serious savings may be enough of a reason on its own for you to snag a membership. If you don't have one already, you should sign up for a free 30-day trial sometime before Prime Day.

You should also consider downloading the app so you can stay ahead of deals. The Amazon app is one of the quickest, easiest ways to prep for Prime Day. It allows you to see deals before they go live, and will alert you when the deal you're interested in goes live. This is useful all year round, but is particularly helpful on Prime Day when daily deals offer even steeper discounts and change out more frequently.

Below, I'll walk you through exactly how to use the app to make sure you never miss a Prime Day deal when July 15 rolls around.

Most deals won't drop until July 15, but there's no such thing as being too prepared. In addition to our breakdown of how to use the app below, we've got you covered with everything you need to know about Amazon Prime Day 2019 — including some great deals our readers loved last year and some predictions we think people will be excited about this year, too.

How to use the Amazon app on Prime Day:

Download the Amazon app

To begin, you need the app. Download it in the app store then log into your Prime account.

This app will be the key to making sure you never miss a good deal this Prime Day.

Head over to the "Upcoming" deals

Open the app and drop down the toolbar on the left-hand side. Click "Today's Deals" and then "Upcoming" — this will let you view all deals 24 hours before they go live.

Choose the deals you want to keep an eye on

Scroll through the deals and tap "Watch this Deal" on any items you're interested in. The app will alert you when these deals go live.

Watch your deals and get ready to buy

Click the "Watching" tab at any time to see how long you have until your deals drop. Now, all you have to do is wait for a notification telling you your deals are live.

With hundreds of thousands of deals, and new ones constantly dropping, it can be hard to keep track of everything you want to buy on Prime Day — unless you use the Amazon app, that is. It's a great tool to keep organized and get ahead of the Prime Day chaos — because Prime Day certainly is just as hectic as your average shopping holiday, even though there are no lines.

So, do yourself a favor and save yourself time furiously searching for products on Prime Day by downloading the Amazon app so you can tag the products you want now. You'll be a Prime Day-pro in no time.

You can save even more time and money on Amazon Prime Day by checking our master list of the best deals to shop.

AmazonFresh

I'm a huge fan of just about everything Amazon has to offer, from Amazon Music Unlimited to Prime Video to crazy fast shipping on thousands of products, but I've never been a big fan of AmazonFresh. This is largely because I love grocery shopping and hate the idea of someone doing it for me, but it's also because the service isn't even available where I live.

If you like the idea of someone delivering all your custom-picked groceries to your door, then by all means, pay the extra $14.99 on top of your Amazon Prime membership and sign up for AmazonFresh. And note that you'll pay an additional $9.99 for any order under $35. All total, an AmazonFresh account by itself will cost at least $179 a year.

If, on the other hand, you've been using AmazonFresh but now think it's time to part ways with the service, canceling AmazonFresh is quick and easy.

How to cancel an AmazonFresh membership

1. Sign into your Amazon account and open the dropdown menu under "Accounts & Lists."

2. Click "Your Account."

Screen Shot 2019 06 19 at 1.24.54 PM

3. Click the box that says "Prime – View benefits and payment settings."

4. Click the words "Manage Fresh Add-on" to the right of the Fresh icon.

Screen Shot 2019 06 19 at 1.26.02 PM

5. Hit "End Membership" and then confirm to cancel your membership.

Screen Shot 2019 06 19 at 1.26.39 PM

If you are canceling a free 30-day trial to avoid incurring your first AmazonFresh charge, the steps are all the same, except hit "Do Not Continue" instead of "End Membership."

NOW WATCH: Here's why it's so hard to switch from Apple to Android

Amazon's Music Unlimited streaming service offers surprisingly great value for Prime members like me — here's what it's like to use

Amazon music unlimited 4x3

  • These days, there are plenty of ways to listen to your favorite songs, but streaming music is definitely the most convenient.
  • Amazon Music Unlimited costs $7.99 a month for Prime members or $9.99 a month for non-members.
  • The service has a catalog of more than 50 million songs that you can stream or download for offline listening.
  • You can listen to Unlimited's catalog of music on many different devices, including Echo smart speakers.
  • I tested out the streaming service and thought it was a solid option and a great value, especially for existing Prime members

I listen to music whenever I get the chance. Whether it's acoustics while I work, the pop charts while I exercise, or classic rock while I drive, I love to have something playing in the background. That's why I was surprised that as an Amazon Prime member, I had never even checked out Amazon's streaming service.

If you have an Amazon Prime membership, you already have access to Prime Music. This is Amazon's basic, free  (for Prime members) streaming option that offers up some 2 million songs. That may sound like a lot, but you can get millions of more songs if you pay for Amazon's Music Unlimited service. Unlimited comes with 50 million songs, and Prime members can get it for $7.99 a month, while non-members will pay $9.99 a month to use it.

We've already written up a rundown on how to use Amazon Music, but it's pretty simple. You can access Amazon Music Unlimited via the Amazon website or app, using your regular Amazon login. Here's what it's like to actually use Amazon Music Unlimited.

Interface

Screen Shot 2019 06 25 at 12.18.50 PM

You can use Music Unlimited on your phone or computer. On the computer, you can access Music Unlimited on the Amazon homepage or download the Amazon Music app onto your desktop — you can download this app straight from Amazon. On your phone, you'll have to download the Amazon Music app from the app store.

However you choose to access Music Unlimited, you'll be met with a similar interface. I found the interface to be clean and user-friendly. There are plenty of built-in features aimed at helping listeners discover new music. The Recommended section (found on the left-side navigation menu on desktop or from bottom left Browse section on phone) is filled with playlists, albums, and songs Amazon thinks you'll like based on your listening history. You can follow playlists you like, listen to playlists curated by your favorite artists, and easily make your own playlists of your favorite songs.

Music selection

Amazon's Unlimited selection rivals that of the big streaming players like Spotify and Apple Music — all are said to offer about 50 million songs. I did plenty of searching, looking for albums from some of today's most popular artists, artists from past decades, as well as musicians I know that haven't made it to the mainstream yet and was pleased to see that Amazon had them all. There really were no holes when it came to music, which makes sense as Music Unlimited releases new songs weekly.

Amazon also has a selection of exclusive songs — both covers and singles — called Amazon Originals, that you can't find on other streaming sites. This reminded me of Spotify Singles — the competing service's collection of exclusive studio sessions with popular artists, though Amazon's section is a little more sparse here.

The selection of curated playlists rivals that of competitors, but Amazon Music Unlimited doesn't offer anything in the way of other content. Spotify has a large selection of podcasts and some fun videos sprinkled throughout the service, Tidal lets you watch music videos, and Slacker Radio has a selection of hilarious stand-up. Amazon does have Side-by-Sides, artist commentary on their own songs and albums, but you can only access this with Alexa. If you just want songs, you won't miss anything with Music Unlimited, but if you want more content this is something to consider.

Pricing

The pricing structure gives Amazon Music Unlimited some real skin in the game. This is one of the most affordable options around, especially if you're a Prime member already.

There is no free Music Unlimited option, though you can do a 30-day trial of the service at no cost. After that, Music Unlimited costs $9.99 a month for non-Prime members, a pretty average price for streaming services. For Prime members that price goes down to $7.99 a month or $79 annually, which brings the price per month to just over $6. The family plan option — which allows you to connect six devices — costs $14.99 a month, similar to Apple Music and Spotify.

There are even more discounts and special deals to encourage Amazon users to use Music Unlimited. Students can get the service for $4.99 a month, but Prime Student members can stream Music Unlimited for just $6 for 6 months. If you have an Amazon Echo device you can save even more — you get access to Amazon's millions of songs for just $3.99, though the plan can only be used on that one registered device.

The price of a membership gets you unlimited access to every song, ad-free listening, unlimited skips, offline streaming, and hands-free listening if you have an Alexa-enabled device.

Screen Shot 2019 06 25 at 1.43.13 PM

Special Features

Users seem to love Amazon Music Unlimited's seamless integration with Echo devices. Just ask Alexa to play a song, an artist, or something like "pool party music" if you want music to fit a specific vibe. While you can use other streaming services with Alexa, the difference here is that it's built-in, you don't need to specify what service Alexa needs to play the song on, she already knows it's Music Unlimited. If you rely heavily on Alexa, this is a nice feature.

Something I found fun was the karaoke-style lyrics provided with each song. When you listen to a song, the lyrics show up on your screen, rolling as the song goes on. You can jump to any point in the song using this feature — just click the lyrics you want to hear. I love knowing song lyrics, so I think this feature is really fun.

Bottom line

Picking which streaming service is best for you is really a personal choice. Are you basing your choice on price alone? Are you just listening to songs or do you want more music-related content? Are you looking for a service that has more social media features?

When it comes to basic features Amazon Music Unlimited is pretty similar to most other major streaming services — it has a strong selection, helps listeners discover new music, and is affordable, especially for Prime members. If you're a real music nerd, this service will probably feel a little bare bones for you as it doesn't offer much in the way of exclusive content from, and about, artists.

But, if you're an Amazon Prime member or the owner of an Echo device, Music Unlimited is a seamless and affordable way to stream music. And, at just $7.99 a month, or an even more affordable $79 a year, it's probably one of the best prices you're going to get.

Sign up for Amazon Music Unlimited free for 30 days here (then $9.99/month for non-members or $7.99/ month for Prime members)

A couple who met in flight attendant school and fell in love on the job 30 years ago inspired their kids to become flight attendants, too

Browns flight attendants

It was 1986 when Scott Brown met Mary Jo Conklin in American Airlines' flight attendant training program in Dallas. They would pass each other in the hallways and often spot one another at lunch...but that was about the extent of their interactions.

After graduating from training school, however, Mary Jo and Scott were both placed in New York — and, coincidentally, both moved into the same apartment building where their friendship blossomed.

Soon after, they split ways — with one moving to Los Angeles and the other to Dallas. But two years later in 1989, they both ended up back in Texas, where Mary Jo and Scott became roommates. They remained just friends, despite traveling together and visiting each other on layovers between flights.

"Our first five years of flying, we were just best buddies," Mary Jo said. But it wasn't until they took a trip to New Zealand that they learned their friendship was so much more.

"The stars aligned," Mary Jo said. "We went on that trip to New Zealand and came back engaged basically."

After five years of friendship, their relationship became romantic and just three months later, Mary Jo and Scott married in 1991.

But the story doesn't end there.

The year after they married, Mary Jo and Scott welcomed a daughter, Rylee, followed by a son, Jake, in 1995. In the early days, Mary Jo and Scott said it was difficult to work a flight attendant's schedule around raising two children. Brown Baby flight attendants

"Absence makes the heart grow fonder," Mary Jo said. "We [would] go days, sometimes a week, without seeing each other."

But they made it work. They would maneuver their flight schedules so that there was at least one parent home at all times. When they couldn't make their schedules work, Mary Jo and Scott would just take the children with them across the world. Once, Rylee missed a day of school because she went on a short trip to Japan with Mary Jo.

Browns flight attendants

Nearly three decades later, Mary Jo and Scott are still married, and still flying the skies together. But it gets even more interesting. Their two children — Rylee, who is now 26, and Jake, 23 — have both become flight attendants themselves.

Rylee caught the travel bug early. "I got to go to crazy places like London, Paris, and Japan before I was even in high school," Rylee said. So it didn't surprise her parents when she told them she applied to be a flight attendant in 2014 behind their backs, despite going to school to become a teacher.

"I was thrilled because I really love my job," Mary Jo said. "I was thrilled just knowing that she would be able to enjoy the job as much as I do."

"We were excited but not surprised when she came to that decision," Scott said.

ryle brown flight attendantA few years later, Jake surprised his parents when he said he wanted to forgo his plans to work in the business world and instead join the rest of his family in the air.

"I was in my sophomore year when I realized how great my parents had it and how great their lifestyle was, so I realized my calling was in the flight industry," Jake said, explaining he would eventually like to become a pilot. "I grew up in the flight industry, so it was natural, and it wasn't anything strange to me. The 'normal world' was so foreign and strange to me that I couldn't imagine working a nine to five job."

Jake brown flight attendant

"Normal" for the Brown family is working together to ensure the safety and comfort of passengers. It's the norm for Mary Jo, Scott, and Rylee to work the same flights together as a family, but that doesn't mean everyone is totally comfortable with it. In fact, Rylee likes to keep the fact that they're all a family on "the down low," while Mary Jo loves to tell anyone who will listen.

"I'm happy to be flying with my family," Mary Jo said. Now, she has one more thing to be happy about as Jake — who just graduated from flight attendant school in June — gets ready to join them in the skies.

"There's a whole world out there to see, and you learn something from every single place you go," Scott said. "I think this job [of being a flight attendant] offers a wonderful education."

Amazon prime 2019 day news FAQs 4x3

  • The fifth annual Amazon Prime Day, Amazon's biggest sale event of the year, will take place July 15-16, 2019.
  • We answered some frequently asked questions about Prime Day below, including what it is, how to shop deals, what products will be discounted, and how else you can prepare.
  • Check back here as the day approaches and we learn more information, or email us at insiderpicks@businessinsider.com if you have any questions about Amazon Prime Day 2019
  • Don't miss out on the best deals of Amazon Prime Day 2019.See our master list of the best deals here.

What exactly is Amazon Prime Day and why does it exist?

Prime Day is Amazon's annual retail holiday. It was introduced in 2015 as a one-day only sales event that boasted more deals than Black Friday and also celebrated Amazon's 20th anniversary as a company.

Though the first Prime Day was met with some disappointment, subsequent Prime Days have improved in both the quality and quantity of deals, and the event has been made available to more countries outside the US every year.

Today, it is a global shopping event where Prime members can shop hundreds of thousands of deals sitewide, with new deals starting as often as every five minutes.

When is Amazon Prime Day this year?

Amazon Prime Day 2019 will be July 15-16, 2019. It will be live for 48 hours, starting at 12 a.m. PT on July 15 and ending at 11:59 p.m. PT on July 16.

How do I shop Amazon Prime Day deals?

Deals will be hosted on this Amazon page on Prime Day.

You need to be an Amazon Prime member in order to shop the deals, so if you aren't already, you should sign up for a free 30-day trial sometime before Prime Day.

What products will be discounted?

Amazon is offering more than 1 million deals for Prime members around the world. The first confirmed deal of Prime Day 2019 is the Toshiba HD 43-Inch Fire TV Edition Smart TV, now $179.99 (originally $299.99).

Amazon devices such as Echo devices, Fire tablets, and Kindle e-readers are very likely to be on sale. Prime Day last year featured double the deals on Amazon devices and the biggest deals yet on Alexa-enabled products like the EchoFire TV, and Fire tablets. Amazon says this year will feature the biggest Prime Day deals ever on Alexa-enabled devices.

Amazon's 12 newest devices, introduced in late 2018, may also be on sale. Outside of physical device deals, expect deals on Amazon services and memberships like entertainment (Kindle Unlimited, Amazon Music Unlimited, Prime Video, Audible, etc.) and grocery shopping (Amazon Fresh, Amazon Pantry, Whole Foods, etc.).

Other things we expect to have good deals are smart home accessories, phones, computers, cameras, TVs, fitness accessories, kitchen appliances, and beauty tools.

These were the best deals across all categories on Amazon Prime Day 2018, and we think similar deals are in the works for Prime Day 2019.

What did people buy on Prime Day last year?

The most popular purchase of the event was the Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote. The Amazon Cloud Cam was the best-selling security camera deal in Amazon history, while the Amazon-owned security company Ring also had a great day, selling out its Video Doorbell Pro

Outside of Amazon devices, Prime members around the world loved everything from video game consoles to DNA tests. In the US and Canada, top sellers included the Instant Pot.

Among Insider Picks readers specifically, the $1 Kindle Unlimited membership was the clear winner. Noise-cancelling headphones from SonyBose, and Sennheiser, and LifeStraw personal water filters were also popular buys on Amazon Prime Day 2018.

Is Amazon the only place I should shop during Prime Day?

No. A growing number of competing online retailers are advertising their summer sales in direct relation to Amazon's Prime Day. Internet-wide, you can expect a lot of great deals during the month of July as retailers all compete to offer the lowest prices. That makes shopping online more overwhelming, but ultimately more rewarding if you're able to hone in on the most valuable deals.

Where can I find the best deals on Prime Day?

Insider Picks will be covering the best overall deals, as well as the best tech deals, home and kitchen appliance deals, fitness deals, and more, right here, so you can avoid the perils of overwhelming choice mentioned above.

Let us do the work for you, and check back to the Insider Picks page on Amazon Prime Day to find full coverage of the deals you should be focusing on.

What are other ways I can get ready for Prime Day?

Download the free Amazon app (iOS, Android), and you can:

  • Get phone notifications when a deal is starting. Go to "Today's Deals" in the app and click "Upcoming" to view all deals 24 hours before they are live. Then tap "Watch this Deal."
  • Get a sneak peek of select products that will have deals by tapping the Prime Day banner within the app in the week before Prime Day.

If you have any additional questions about Prime Day 2019, email us at insiderpicks@businessinsider.com and we'll do our best to find the answer for you.

NOW WATCH: I switched from the $1,099 iPhone XS Max to the $479 Pixel 3a XL — and I didn't miss much

This $67 hyaluronic acid serum hydrates my dry skin better than any night cream or face mask I’ve tried

$

image skincare

  • Hyaluronic acid is a hydrating substance naturally found in your skin, but it decreases as you get older. It's said to hold up to 1000 times its weight in water
  • Image Skincare's Ageless Total Pure Hyaluronic6 Filler is a serum that contains six forms of hyaluronic acid to moisturize skin and smooth fine lines.
  • This is the only product that hydrates my extremely dry skin and seems to plump from within, as opposed to heavy night creams that feel as if they're just sitting on top of my skin.
  • This serum is pricey at $67 for a tiny one ounce bottle, but I've yet to find another hyaluronic acid product — or any product, for that matter — that hydrates my skin and actually reduces the appearance of fine lines around my mouth.

I have two major skin issues — extreme dryness and fine lines, specifically vertical lines around my mouth that some might refer to as "smokers' lines." I don't smoke, but I do drink from a lot of straws.

Here's the thing — fine lines and dryness are related. When your skin is dry, it can exacerbate the appearance of fine lines, but when your skin is hydrated, your face can appear more plump and bouncy so the fine lines don't appear as deep or pronounced.

In my quest to solve both of my problems, I found one ingredient that does the trick — hyaluronic acid.

Like retinol, hyaluronic acid has been a hero ingredient in skin-care products for a long time and has had its share of buzzy moments as well, but it's actually a naturally occurring substance found in your skin that retains water — up to 1000 times its weight in water, in fact. It draws moisture from below the epidermis (your skin) and from the atmosphere, and brings it to the top layer of your skin, so skin looks and feels softer and smoother.

Ageless Total Pure Hyaluronic6 Filler by Image Skincare is the only hyaluronic acid-based product I've found that does what it's supposed to — hydrate skin and subsequently reduce the appearance of fine lines. In fact, this is the only lightweight product (as in, not a night cream or moisturizing mask) that hydrates my skin at all.

The serum contains six different forms of hyaluronic acid, which the brand claims boosts hydration and fills in fine lines "without an injection." I wouldn't go so far to say that it can totally replace injectable dermal fillers, but more on that later. The "different forms" translate to differently sized molecules and derivatives of hyaluronic acid, which are absorbed into your skin at different rates for prolonged moisture.

Image Skincare says to use the serum both morning and night, but I only use it in the morning to extend the shelf life of a $67 skin-care product. Let's be honest — it's expensive.

After washing my face and patting it dry, I massage a nickel-sized amount of the clear serum into my skin as the first step in my skin-care routine while my face is still a little damp. This step is important as damp skin provides a pathway for the hyaluronic acid to be absorbed.

Once the serum is absorbed, I immediately apply my Curologymoisturizer (which is a simple gel formula) to lock in the moisture. I'll finish with sunscreen and voilà, that's my morning routine. Every time I use it, I'll immediately notice my skin is extremely hydrated, feels soft and supple, and my fine lines are less pronounced.

Once I got a facial and the aesthetician doused my face in this product before she applied a face mask because it helped boost the mask's hydrating qualities. You could also mix the serum in with your favorite moisturizer, or just layer it like me.

And on the few occasions I did use the product at night, I noticed that I woke up looking more well-rested and my skin was more supple to the touch too.

The bottom line

One ounce of this product will set you back $67, which I find outrageous, but I also think my red, cranky, dry skin is outrageous, so this is the one skin-care splurge I'm willing to make.

I bought the serum about two months ago and use the product every morning, but the tiny bottle is still half full so it's been lasting me a while. It'll obviously be used up more quickly if you follow the instructions to use it both night and day. At least the small bottle is easier to travel with.

But the main reason I'm willing to spend $67 on the serum is that it really does hydrate and leave me with softer skin. I've used night creams and hydrating masks, but they've always felt heavy — as if they're sitting on the top of my skin and coating it in a sheen of silicone. Instead, this product feels lightweight and absorbs quickly, as if my skin is drinking it up. Plus, because it moisturizes so well, it gives me that ultra-quenched dewy look.

As for the brand's claim that it can replace injectable dermal fillers, I don't agree with that. Those pesky fine lines around my mouth are definitely less pronounced when I use the product, but it doesn't eliminate them completely. I don't actually believe any topical product can "erase" or eliminate fine lines completely, as that's what injectable fillers are for, should you want that.

To compare, I recently used a niche Korean beauty brand's hyaluronic acid serum that made no difference in skin.

I also tried Neutrogena's Hydro Boost Water Gel moisturizer which also contains hyaluronic acid as a main ingredient, but I didn't see any difference in my skin than when I use any normal gel moisturizer.

Murad's Hydro-Dynamic Ultimate Moisture is a hyaluronic acid-based cream that moisturized well, but I didn't get that juicy, quenched, and almost dewy appearance that I did with the Image Skincare serum.

For now, this is the most effective hyaluronic acid product I've come across and the only thing I've found to hydrate, plump, and soften my skin — all while minimizing the appearance of fine lines around my mouth just a tad. My wallet and I know it's a splurge, but until I find a more affordable option that can do it all, I'll be using this one every morning.

A US Senator asked the FTC to 'take all necessary steps' to ensure YouTube is held accountable for violating children privacy laws

  • US Senator Edward Markey of Massachusetts has released a public letter calling for stricter regulations on YouTube to ensure child safety.
  • YouTube is reportedly under investigation by the Federal Trade Commission for its handling of children's videos and could face fines for breaking children's privacy laws.
  • YouTube has been rocked by a series of controversies that called attention to how children are using the video platform and revealed gaps in YouTube's moderation process.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

As the Federal Trade Commission reportedly enters the final stages of an investigation into YouTube, US Senator Edward Markey is calling for major changes to how the Google-owned video site handles children's content. In a letter dated June 25,Markey asked the FTC to "take all necessary steps to hold YouTube accountable" for potential violations of children's privacy laws.

Markey is the author of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), a federal law introduced in 2000. COPPA requires websites that are designed for children to ask for a parent's permission when personal data is being collected.  In his letter, Markey said that many popular YouTube channels are meant for children, but are not subject to COPPA laws because YouTube claims to be for teens and adults. He specifically mentioned RyanToysReview, YouTube's highest earning channel with more than 19 million subscribers.

Read more:YouTube is reportedly being investigated by the FTC over how it handles children's videos, and it may result in fundamental changes to the platform

Markey's letter calls for YouTube to comply with several specific rules:

  • Google would be required to stop collecting data from users age 13 or below, and delete all data collected prior to the age of 13, even if the user is now a teenager.
  • Unless the site changes to meet COPPA requirements, YouTube would need to introduce new features to detect users under the age of 13 and ban them from the platform.
  • YouTube Kids would need to ban targeted and influencer marketing directed at kids. (Which would likely include sponsored videos on Toy Review channels)
  • YouTube Kids would need to provide "comprehensive information" on any data that is being collected for internal purposes, including why the data is being collected and who can access it.
  • Google would need to submit to a yearly audit from a third-party auditor, and the audit results would be public.
  • Google cannot launch any new product or service designed for children without the approval of an independent panel of experts that includes privacy and child development experts.
  • Google's would need to provide the FTC with documents showing compliance when requested.
  • Google would need to establish a fund for the development of noncommercial children's content.

With the FTC investigation already underway, YouTube is reportedly considering shifting all children's content to YouTube Kids, which could increase their compliance with COPPA. The video platform has been recovering from a number of scandals, including reports that a network of pedophiles generated millions of views on home videos featuring scantily clad or near-nude children.

In February, the FTC found that TikTok violated COPPA by not requiring parental consent before collecting data from users under the age of 13. The startup was hit with a $5.7 million fine as a result.

The best fishing lures and flies you can buy

the best places to buy fishing lures

  • Fishing lures are fun-looking contraptions, but first and foremost they are tools.
  • They're also expensive, so it's worth doing a bit of homework to understand what is needed and what isn't.
  • Below are brands and retailers I use to fill my tackle (and fly) boxes, and the ones I'd recommend to anyone looking to do the same.

Superstitions abound around which colors and sizes are best when choosing a lure or fly. "Match the hatch," goes one old adage, which is to say, try to imitate the flies hatching in a body of water where fish (usually trout) are feeding on said flies hatching or laying eggs at the surface. The same goes elsewhere: If there are herring around, it's a good bet to assume that the larger predators (say, striped bass) are eating them and not menhaden, for example, which might be out of season or simply not around at that given point in time.

Another theory, which is wholly contradictory, is to stand out. Simplistically, if there are lots of green fish swimming around, throw a pink lure and try to catch the eye of your target species off guard.

What about quality, or specifically, attention to detail? Does it really matter how lifelike a lure is? Yes and no. Some of my simplest lures have caught more fish than the meticulously detailed lures, especially along the bottom in murky conditions with poor visibility where fish can't see all that well anyhow. In others, such as dry fly fishing in gin-clear streams, a fly must be an immaculate imitation in order to even catch the attention of, let alone fool, a cunning trout.

Finally, your lure is only as good as your hooks. If you do buy inexpensive lures, I'd advise that you change out your hooks, particularly if you're fishing in saltwater. I also tend to get rid of treble-style hooks unless my full intention is to eat every fish I hook. They can do a lot of damage to fish (not to mention your hands), and it's rather cruel to toss them back in such rough shape. I try to change out all of my hooks to Gamakatsu single hooks, which are sharp, sure, but they also barely rust.

Taking all this into account, I'm leaving particular lure selection (i.e., size and color) to you, dear readers, lest I should be at the receiving end of whatever aspersions you cast on your next angling adventure.

Below are various brands I've found to provide the best and most reasonably priced equipment I've encountered over the course of more than two decades of sportfishing and working on fishing charters. These will, of course, also be highly subjective recommendations, but they're products and brands which I've relied on time and again, from the High Sierra of California to South Pacific streams and fjords, and the South Carolina Lowcountry to the Long Island Sound.

Here are the best fishing lures you can buy in 2019:

  • Best hard plastics for saltwater and freshwater: Rapala
  • Best soft plastics for freshwater: Yamamoto
  • Best soft plastics for inshore saltwater: Storm
  • Best surface lures: Yo-Zuri
  • Best place to buy flies online: Big Y Fly Co.
  • Best bucktail jigs: Sea Striker
  • Best soft plastics for offshore and big game: RonZ

The best hard plastics for saltwater and freshwater fishing

Rapala lures have been around since 1936, and they're among the world's most popular lures. They're hand-tuned and -tested, and among the very few (if not the only) fishing lure manufacturers still mass-producing balsa wood lures.

Lauri Rapala did it first and he did it best. His life, or at least his livelihood, depended on it. Back in the 1930s when he was a child, he was faced with either a harsh life of labor in a factory or on the lake. A good day's haul of fish, however, could amount to two weeks' pay in the factory. In short, the kid learned how to fish.

So much time spent on the water and around fish in their habitat led to his creating what came to be the definitive modern-day fishing lure, the balsa wood minnow, which floats and swims like a wounded baitfish — something Rapala noticed would almost invariably attract the attention of otherwise precautious big fish.

That's the backstory, but today, Rapala the company is still, more or less, the front and center in the world of lures. The brand makes all sorts of lures to imitate wounded baitfish, and I can attest that they all work. In freshwater, my favorite model is the original balsa wood minnow. It comes in various sizes and will do the trick on everything (respective of size) from small panfish to larger pond and lake fish like bass and pike.

In the brine, the CountDown Magnum is about all I ever use for trolling lures, for everything from bluefish and striped bass all the way up to tuna, king mackerel, and wahoo. I've trolled thousands and thousands of miles along coastlines and during open ocean passages, and the CountDown Magnum almost invariably outfishes any other lure I put out unless I'm going for truly big game, at which point I tend to splurge on custom skirts, the prices of which I'm embarrassed to divulge.

There are hardly any professional reviews of Rapala lures because fishermen already know all too well of their legacy, but if you don't trust me, read these Amazon reviews of the Original Floating Rapala. Here's what goes into the making of a Rapala lure.

Pros: Hand-tuned and -tested, almost staggering variety

Cons: Mostly (if not only) come with treble hooks, which you might want to change out (specifically for catch and release), not cheap

Buy the Original Floating Rapala for $7.49-$12.49

The best soft plastics for freshwater

Soft plastics are affordable, easy to store, and surprisingly effective on just about every species of sport fish. Yamamoto's Senkos are a more technical (and expensive) option, while Culprit's 7.5-inch Tequila Shads are more simplistic, but will almost always get the job done just the same.

The best ones in the freshwater world right now, in my humble opinion (though Bassmaster and Wired2Fishagree), are Gary Yamamoto's Senkos, which are wobbly, slug-like cylinders with some weight, so they're easy to cast, and sink in a beautifully enticing manner without requiring the added (and expensive) steel weight. While these are relatively pricey even without having to buy weights, they tend to last a little longer.

The whole Yamamoto line offers just about everything you'd need in freshwater, along with a bit of inshore saltwater tackle as well. What I like most about these lures is that almost all of them (and especially the Senko) do the work for you, and you may find that the less you do in terms of "working," or bouncing these soft plastics along in an attempt to make them look more lifelike, the more bites you get.

In a pinch, I'll reach for any old brand, figuring fish will chew them to bits so it doesn't much matter how durable they are, as long as they work. My favorite worms on a budget are Culprit's 7.5-inch Tequila Shads. They're certainly cheap enough, and while they break up after a little while, there are 18 to a pack, which should easily last you a day if not a season.

Both of these soft plastic worms I've mentioned are best fished with a Gamakatsu worm hook; I like a slanted 3/0, which tends not to end up down a fish's throat and/or in its gut like straight ones can.

Pros: Weighted, extremely effective on largemouth bass

Cons: Pricier than the average worm

Buy the Culprit 7.5-inch Tequila Shad worm (in packs of 18) on Amazon for $5.95

The best soft plastics for inshore saltwater

Some of the brands we recommend for freshwater do produce a few saltwater-oriented designs, but there is one brand I stick by when it comes to saltwater soft plastics: Storm (a subsidiary of Rapala), which covers all of your inshore needs.

Saltwater is a whole different arena. Crabs, shrimps, and other crustaceans drive a lot of lure design, as do cephalopods like squids and octopi. And, of course, the fish tend to get a whole lot bigger, which means the baits do too. By and large, the price tags also correlate.

I'll often try to scour the used section of my local tackle shop if I can, which helps, but I often don't find what I need. Inshore, I'll generally reach for anything from the Storm-branded lures line. A younger company, Storm entered the market with affordable lures with high performance. No, they're not made from balsa wood, but they're balanced and, far as my human eyes can tell, nearly as lifelike as Rapalas. It also doesn't hurt to note that Rapala recently purchased the brand.

Storm also has a series of swimbaits called the WildEye, which aren't nearly as durable (fish with teeth tend to rip the tails off and render their action useless), but they're lifelike and are highly effective without much angling finesse. In other words, all that takes to make these things work is cast, retrieve, repeat.

Pros: WildEyes and Chug Bugs are effective on a wide variety of fish, both fresh and salt (size down for freshwater, generally)

Cons: Wildeyes' tails get bitten off frequently; Chug Bugs' hooks are worth changing out, especially when pursuing larger fish in the brine

Buy Storm WildEyes from Rapala starting at $3.99 at Rapala

Buy Storm Rattling Saltwater Chug Bugs from Rapala starting at $9.49 at Rapala

The best surface lures

Yo-Zuri, like Rapala, has been in the game for more than 50 years, during which they've fine-tuned the hard plastic fishing lure to near-perfection.

Surface lures can get expensive, but they are arguably the most fun to fish. There are a few things that make surface lure design expensive. Like all lures, they need to be weighted evenly, but they also have to disperse a certain amount of water to do their job. And, generally speaking, they have to float well (to that point there are some exceptions). For the job, I prefer a hard plastic lure.

Yo-Zuri makes some of the world's most beloved hard plastic lures, thanks in large part to their Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) resin coating that makes them almost indestructible. The inner hologram sheet, which reflects light in a way that imitates baitfish scales, gives the brand's lures high visibility, even after the ABS resin has been thoroughly scratched. These lures aren't cheap, but they'll withstand a lot. These lures are a sound investment unless your fishing skills are dubious.

Yo-Zuri's lures are also a little more lifelike than a lot of others. A ton of attention is paid not only to specific patterns on fish (stripes on mackerel and spots on herring, for example) but also to the eyes. It's hard to say how much all this matters when we can often catch fish on little more than a feather and a stainless steel hook, but it's hard to imagine it hurting all the same, and there's a reason the brand is still at it after all these years.

The company's lures are also weighted, so they're easy to cast and they balance with a little more ballast than cheaper options, which can often make a big difference, especially when conditions are calm and fish have a little more time to assess a lure.

On the other side of the spectrum, you'll find the Storm lures. They're made with a lower-grade plastic and no resin, the finish will start to come off after a few good whacks from fish. Since I began using Storm top-water lures about 15 years ago, I think I've caught more large (20-plus pounds) saltwater fish with the brand's Rattling Saltwater Chug Bug than with any other lure. It's a balanced and durable lure (i.e., it's survived being obliterated by toothy fish and repeatedly cast into stone walls) with precise action. It waddles back and forth, displaces a formidable amount of water with as little effort as possible (some lures are a workout), and, as I said, it catches fish.

It was much more affordable before Rapala acquired the Storm brand, but that's a true sign that Storm was becoming a formidable competitor.

Pros: Yo-Zuri makes everything you need to catch most sportfish, lifelike, brilliantly balanced

Cons: Expensive

Buy the Yo-Zuri top-water lures on Amazon starting at $6.77

Buy the Storm Chug Bug from Rapala starting at $8.99

The best place to buy flies online

Flies require TLC to be made correctly. If they don't get good attention, they'll often fall apart upon first use. Big Y Fly Co. offers almost any fly you can think of, at an affordable price.

You really don't want to cheap out on flies. Such fine, detail-oriented contraptions require a meticulous hand. If you opt for cheap, factory-made flies, you'll find that they often fall apart on the first use. Collectively, cheap, lightweight thread, skimpy portions of cement or glue, and little to no oversight don't bode well. Suffice it to say it's a good idea to stay away from Walmart, Dick's, or Cabela's for flies. I've found all this out the hard way, and while there might be exceptions, you'll put yourself through a good deal of hard-earned spending and learning.

The best way to get your flies is to go down to your local fly shop if you have one. But, if you already know what you need, or local prices are too prohibitive, there is one online retailer that I trust: Big Y Fly Co.

Pro tip: A good trick when buying (or tying) any flies is to apply an extra dab (or coating, depending on the fly) of head cement, or even just clear nail polish or nail hardener. Flies can take a thrashing, both from fish and, say, rocks and trees (the latter depends on how good of a caster you are).

Like with any lure (but maybe especially with flies), wash them with a generous helping of fresh water after use, especially if you've been fishing in salt water, and your lures will live much longer. Salt is bad for any kind of hook, but it dries out hair and feathers, and they'll become brittle and start to break off.

There is a cacophony of views on the matter over at Reddit (here and here), and one expert at Field & Stream commends Big Fly Co. when discussing the pros and cons of buying flies online.

Ultimately, you should learn to tie your own flies. It will save you money over time, but it will also teach you more than you could possibly ever learn otherwise about the fish you pursue. Orvis makes a kit that is very good and reasonably priced.

Pros: Affordable, wide selection

Cons: Only that you'll have to wait for delivery

The best bucktail jigs

A bucktail jig doesn't have to be anything special, but the magic is all in the bounce of the steel (formerly lead) head and the dyed bucktail (hair from the tail of a male deer). Sea Striker's bucktail jigs are affordable and they work almost anywhere.

You can spend a whole lot of money on a bucktail jig if you choose to, but this quite possibly ancient lure needs no frills to get its job done, and I can't tell you how many fish (and how many different species) I've pulled in using nothing but a white and red Sea Striker bucktail.

It is also among the more versatile fishing lures around. Fish it fast or slow anywhere in the water column, or add on a strip of squid, a small minnow (live or dead), or a (very dead) soft plastic, and you can drift or bounce and retrieve it along the bottom for any number of species that might be lingering thereabouts.

You won't find too many reviews of Sea Striker lures because they've been around so long that they're ubiquitous, but Sport Fishing Magazine included the brand in a recent roundup of the best metal jigs.

My only disclaimer is that at the end of a long season of use and abuse (it's best to rinse all lures clean after use, but that doesn't always happen), you might notice that the bucktail is falling apart. Get yourself a small kit of thread and a fly-tying vise, along with a patch of dyed bucktail, and repairs are a cinch (tip: use a little clear nail polish or clear cement to seal your threading).

And, for some lighter-weight, higher-end jigs, which can pay off in dividends in skinny water where fish are more spookish and selective, check out Angler's Ammo. They make various shapes and sizes that work well with bonefish and other inshore species where delivery is key.

Pros: Affordable, tried and true

Cons: They'll fall apart after a while, especially if you don't rinse them after use

Shop Sea Striker Bucktail Jigs (and pick out your preferred color and weight) on Amazon, starting at $4.76 a piece or $11.99 for a six-pack

The best soft plastics for offshore and big game

RonZ lures are built for, among other things, catching large, offshore pelagic species like tuna. They're heavy, which helps when it comes time to make that oh-so-crucial long cast into a fast-moving school that's here one second and gone the next.

RonZ makes ultra-heavy-duty plastic baits meant for long casting and heavy abuse from some of the biggest fish in the sea.

I've caught fish in the 200-pound range on one, with neither hook nor soft plastic showing any sign of strain. Just make sure to go for the "4X" hook design, which is made with a swivel, rather than a through-wire hook, which, despite being moderately strong, will bend and break.

The best thing about RonZ lures, apart from the durability, is how fast they sink while still maintaining a lifelike action. The fish I caught came up for the lure while it was dropping down to about 100 feet and I was doing literally nothing. A lure that fish will hit when you're idle on your end, is a good lure, but one that can repeatedly survive being smashed by giant tuna is a great lure.

What helps is that these are not terribly expensive lures in the big scheme of things. They're far less costly than most trolling lures, and they require much less material and attention to produce than fancy surface plugs.

If you're going fishing anywhere there are squid or long thin bait fish like mackerel, eels, or herring, you probably will appreciate having a few of these in your tackle box. Just make sure to size them accordingly to the species (and size) trying to imitate.

One captain I've fished with, Dom Petrarca of Coastal Charters Sportfishing, swears by them, and currently holds the spinning rod and reel world record for bluefin tuna. On 360Tuna, a tuna fishing forum, he also claims he's done well by slow-trolling them at less than 3 knots. I haven't tried trolling them yet, but knowing that he does, I will now.

Even if you don't have a clue about what you're doing out there, having a kit full of RonZ lures will give you a much better chance of hooking up out there.

Pros: Relatively affordable, highly versatile

Cons: You'll have to replace the tails every so often if you're catching a lot of fish (but that's a good thing)

What else we considered

In my two-plus decades of fishing, I've bought just about everything there is to buy, from thumbnail-sized spinners for panfish and largemouth bass to trolling lures the length of my forearm. I've also tried to cheap-out as best I could (this can be an expensive addiction). As long as you're not making a habit of losing lures (don't), buy better equipment and it will last longer. Especially if you tie your lures onto fishing line you can trust.

  • Berkeley: Berkeley makes just about everything related to fishing there is, but I've found that to come at a cost. What the brand seems to do best is, apart from fluorocarbon fishing line, a brand of artificial baits and attractants collectively called "PowerBait," soaked in a scent that you might not appreciate all that much but many anglers swear by. Author's note: Just don't spill this stuff or you'll be sorry.
  • Blue Fox: Blue Fox is a brand between South Bend and Storm, primarily specializing in smaller freshwater game. The brand produces good lures within a reasonable price range, but its array wasn't diverse enough for us to widely recommend.
  • Strike King: Strike King is a higher-end brand that crafts freshwater-centric lures at a premium, but not unlike Yo-Zuri or Rapala, they're top notch. The only setback, as with both aforementioned brands, is the price. Again, it's worth it if you'll be doing a lot of freshwater fishing, have the dough, and really want to catch fish. I've found the brand's hard-plastic lures to be particularly productive on deep-dwelling bass and pike.
  • South Bend: It can be difficult to gauge which brands are good and which ones aren't. There are some, like South Bend, which had been notoriously high-quality, first-rate lures for nearly a century before they dropped off into the lower end of the market and started making tons of junk. They'll catch fish, but only for so long. Hooks will break, holograms will peel off, and through all of it, you'll lose opportunities to catch fish, which is the point of fishing, remember. A few dollars more will go a long way over time.
  • Storm: Then there are brands like Storm, which we recommend above for specific lure types, and which came, ostensibly, out of nowhere. The brand started out being inexpensive, and I'd find Storm lures on Walmart shelves for $2-$4 all the time. I lucked out: Most of what I bought worked and withstood a beating, and I kept buying them. The next thing I knew, Rapala had bought the company and its prices had doubled. Still, it's a relatively affordable option for many angling pursuits. I'm still using the brand's lures that I bought 15 years ago, and they're still catching fish. (It should go without saying that I'm an excellent angler. Ask anyone.)

Sure, there are many more brands, including many more good ones we have left to test. The above, however, are among the best of the more popular ones we know and use at the moment, and we'll stand by them until something better comes along.

The best fishing rods and reels you can buy

The best, most versatile setup for most anglers, whether they fish in freshwater or salt with bait or artificial lures, is a simple spinning rod and reel. After testing dozens of spinning rods and reels over the years, my favorite all-around affordable combination is an Ugly Stik Elite rod paired with a Daiwa BG reel. You can spend more on a spinning rod and reel, of course — a lot more — and you can find rods and reels for more specific applications, but it's hard to beat this rugged pairing anywhere south of $200. Here are our top picks for the best fishing rods and reels:

The best fishing line you can buy

More than even a rod and reel, fishing line is an essential part of your kit. Anglers have survived millennia without fancy rods and reels, and the best of which are useless without trusty line. You get what you pay for, and cheap fishing line almost inevitably ensures disaster. Momoi's Hi Catch monofilament is our top pick for most anglers because we've found it to be the most memory-free, tangle-resistant, and user-friendly fishing line around. Here are my favorite widely available fishing lines in each of the three most popular materials, which admittedly all come along with their advantages and disadvantages:

We also break down what other kinds of tackle you need for fly fishing and recommend a great guidebook on how to tie knots.

The best sun shirts you can buy

Sun shirts have never really been an interest where the style-savvy are concerned. They're sporty, synthetic, and generally emblazoned with hideous logos, and I too am guilty of having pooh-poohed them. But we've had decades now to process the grim reality that even our beloved sun can give us cancer, and I for one am tired of getting sunburned through the old, tattered shirts I have always tried to wring a second life out of by wearing while fishing.

I, like many of you, do not enjoy slathering sunscreen all over my torso and making myself into a greasy mess for the day just to ward off UV rays. Moreover, sunscreen is expensive, especially if you tend to use a good, chemical-free mineral-based sunscreen, and find yourself in the sun often. Here are our picks for the best sun shirts with UPF protection:

The best polarized sunglasses you can buy

The best polarized sunglasses for you are going to vary based on the shape of your face and the activities you plan to engage in. Poorly designed ones often leave our retinas exposed to harmful UV rays that can lead to macular degeneration, cataracts, and myriad other troubles down the line. Here are our top picks for the best polarized sunglasses you can buy:

Almost 40% of LGBTQ tech employees that participated in a survey said they've witnessed homophobic discrimination and harassment at work

gay marriage

Nearly 40% of LGBTQ employees at tech companies who participated in a recent survey said they've witnessed some form of gender or sexuality-related discrimination at work.

The anonymous workplace chat app Blind recently polled more than 7,000 Silicon Valley workers about their perceptions of their companies' acceptance and treatment of LGBTQ employees. The results, provided exclusively to Business Insider, show that although an overwhelming majority of queer tech employees say their workplaces are "safe spaces," a significant number of respondents say they've witnessed homophobic and discriminatory behavior.

The survey from Blind also showed a breakdown of harassment and discrimination at various tech companies. At least half of LGBTQ-identifying employees at Facebook, Oracle, LinkedIn, and Netflix all said they had witnessed homophobic harassment in the workplace. Silicon Valley staples including Uber, Apple, Microsoft, and Amazon all saw more than a quarter of its queer employees say they had seen homophobia on display in their offices.

There was, however, a stark discrepancy between the amount of straight employees and LGBTQ workers who reported witnessing harassment and discriminatory behavior. Although nearly 40% of LGBTQ-identifying employees who responded told Blind they had seen homophobic behavior in the workplace, only 8% of non-LGBTQ tech workers reported witnessing harassment.

The results of the Blind survey are not representative of an entire company or its workforce; they represent only the views of employees who choose to use the Blind app. Still, the survey provides an interesting glimpse into the state of LGBTQ treatment within the Silicon Valley corporate world, at a time when the issue is in the news at one major tech company.

It's also worth noting that California, where most of the tech companies in the survey have their headquarters, is one of only 21 states in the US that have laws protecting people in the workplace from being fired, not hired, or discriminated against based on gender identity or sexual orientation.

Read more:Tesla employees are complaining that the company is trying to block Blind, an anonymous app for talking about your company — here's how it works

Blind's survey provided a company-by-company breakdown of employees who feel their place of work is a safe space, and most companies included in the results reached above 90% of surveyed employees responding in the affirmative. Intel ranked among the lowest at over 17% saying they did not feel the company was a safe space, followed by Amazon. Interestingly, Apple, whose CEO Tim Cook is openly gay, ranked the third worst in this part of the survey, with 10.2% of respondents describing it as not a safe space for LGBTQ employees.

blind lgbtq tech workplace survey

And Google, the tech company that's gotten the most flak recently over its LGBTQ policies, didn't fare nearly as poorly as some of its Silicon Valley neighbors.

Blind, which verifies users by their work emails, didn't disclose the number of employees from each company who responded, but only 25% of LGBTQ-identifying Google employees said in the survey they had witnessed harassment in the workplace. More than 94% of surveyed Google employees, both straight and LGBTQ-identifying, said they felt the tech giant was a safe space.

Earlier this month, Google decided not to remove videos from a YouTube personality who used homophobic and racial slurs referring to a Vox journalist. YouTube's inaction was met with criticism not only from the public LGBTQ community, but from employees within the company. LGBTQ Googlers told news outlets that they felt afraid to speak up for fear of retaliation from both the company and their coworkers.

"It's hard to put my shoes on everyday and go to work when I don't think the company I work for supports my identity," a Google engineer, who wished to remain anonymous, told Business Insider.

On Monday, leaked internal emails revealed that Google employees who wished to march alongside the official Google float during the San Francisco Pride parade were forbidden from protesting YouTube's LGBTQ policies - doing so would be a violation of the company's communications policy (although Google said employees were free to protest YouTube if they marched on their own, or with other groups).

The best composters

  • The simplest method of home composting is starting an open pile in a corner of your yard, but that can be unsightly, smelly, and attract insects and animal foragers. It may also be against the laws in your town.
  • A tumbling composter like our top pick, the Yimby Tumbler Composter, makes it very simple to collect materials, speeds up the decomposition of organics by generating heat, and keeps the compost out of sight.

Compost is like gold for your garden, encouraging healthy growth, strong roots, and bountiful blooms. Plants need vitamins and nutrients for proper growth just as you do, and compost is like a multi-vitamin for greenery.

Not only is compost a great way to nourish your plants, it is also an environmentally sound way of disposing of materials that otherwise would go in the garbage. You can buy a bag of compost at the garden center, but why pay good money, then haul a heavy bag home in your car, when it's so easy to turn the scraps and rubbish you otherwise would throw away into compost at home?

Composting isn't difficult, although it does take some time and attention. The right composter makes it even easier, however. There are a lot of composters in many different forms, so we decided to sort through them and whittle the choices down to the top seven.

Here are our choices for the best compost bins:

Updated on 06/26/2019 by Les Shu: Updated prices, links, and formatting.

Keep scrolling to read more about our top picks.

The best composter overall

The Yimby Tumbler Composter has double inner bins, holds lots of compost, and makes mixing easy.

Compost tumblers, such as the Yimby Tumbler Composter, typically resemble a large sideways barrel on a stand. These composters are easy to use, and a great choice for the gardener who doesn't have a lot of extra space in the yard.

Fill the Yimby with up to 37 gallons of organic waste and give the barrel five to six spins every two or three days. The tumbling action aerates the compost, breaking it down more quickly for use in the garden — no need for digging, shoveling, or mixing the compost by hand. If it's warm enough, and you've balanced your ingredients properly, you'll have compost ready for the garden in as little as two weeks.

There are two inner chambers in the Yimby, so you can have two batches of compost in different stages of decomposition going at the same time. The large door makes it easy to add scraps and dump out finished compost. The composter is made of BPA-free, UV-inhibited, recycled polypropylene, so it won't break down in direct sunlight or leach harmful chemicals into your compost. The galvanized steel frame is corrosion resistant.

With more than 2,000 reviews on Amazon, the Yimby Tumbler Composter has an average of 4.1 stars, and many rave reviews, including this one from happy buyer Lorrie: "Overall, this composter is affordable, works as advertised when used with common sense, easy to tumble, makes beautiful compost, and I would recommend it as an affordable alternative to the more expensive tumblers."

On the downside, many buyers commented that the Yimby is somewhat difficult to assemble

Pros: Double chambers, air vents to increase oxygen flow, and a large door make this well-constructed tumbler very effective and easy to use

Cons: Difficult to assemble

Buy the Yimby Tumbler Composter at Walmart for $76.97

The best rolling compost bin

You can roll the Envirocycle Tumbler Bin to wherever you are working in your yard to conveniently load or unload the contents.

Rolling composters, such as the Envirocycle Tumbler Bin, are large plastic balls with a tightly fitted lid. The bin sits on a stand, making it easy to give it a roll or two each day, thus keeping the compost aerated and circulating for quicker decomposition. The Envirocycle Tumbler Bin, which bills itself as, "The most beautiful composter in the world," comes in two sizes: a 17-gallon bin for smaller yards and a 35-gallon bin for those with larger gardens. You also get it in black or hot pink.

What's great about rolling compost bins is that when your compost is completely "cooked," you simply roll the composter right where you want the compost, open it up, and dump or shovel the contents around your plants. No need for a bucket or wheelbarrow to transport the compost. According to Amazon buyers, it's fairly easy to roll the Envirocycle even when it's full.

The Envirocycle is made of BPA-free, food-safe plastic that won't fade, warp, or crack even in rough weather conditions. A small spigot in the base lets you pour out "compost tea" to use as fertilizer. Plants love this nutrient-rich liquid product of compost decomposition.

With nearly 600 reviews and an average of 4.5 stars, this is one of the most popular outdoor composters on Amazon, despite the somewhat high price.

Pros: There's no assembly required, it's easy to turn, it rolls right to where you need it in the garden, and it's reasonably attractive

Cons: A very few customers complained that the composter comes off its base too easily

Buy the Envirocycle Tumbler Bin on Amazon for $189.99 or $259.99 (price varies by capacity)

The best kitchen compost bin

The SCD Probiotics All Season Indoor Composter Kit lets you get a head start on your compost making inside, while the Erica Stainless Steel Compost Bin is a good place to collect your compost before it goes outside.

While you can't complete the full decomposition cycle indoors, the SCD Probiotics All Season Indoor Composter Kit lets you get a head start on your compost making, and provides plenty of compost tea, as well. If you simply want an attractive container to hold food scraps until you have a chance to add them to your outdoor compost bin, the Erica Stainless Steel Compost Bin is effective and attractive.

If you don't have room for a full-size composter, or have a very small garden, you might find that the SCD Probiotics All Season Indoor Composter Kit is all that you need. This anaerobic composter is intended for indoor use, but don't worry — It won't stink up your kitchen, and it fits right under the kitchen sink.

The kit includes a 5-gallon airtight bucket with a handy spigot for releasing compost tea, but what really sets this system apart from traditional outdoor composters is the included gallon bag of Bokashi compost starter, which activates the anaerobic fermentation process. Just drop your food scraps into the bucket, add a layer of Bokashi, and fasten the lid.

The compost will not fully "cook" inside this composter, however, so when the bucket is full, you'll need to bury or scatter the contents in your outdoor garden to finish the composting process.

If you are just looking for a convenient, airtight container to hold scraps until you have a chance to empty them into your outdoor compost bin, the Erica Stainless Steel Compost Bin looks good enough to keep out on your counter, has a charcoal filter to prevent odor, and holds up to 1.3 gallons of kitchen scraps.

Pros: Kitchen composters make it easy to recycle food scraps

Cons: You'll still need to transfer the contents to an outdoor composter before your compost is ready to use

Buy the SCD Probiotics All Season Indoor Composter Kit on Amazon for $46.95

Buy the Erica Stainless Steel Compost Bin on Amazon for $22.95 (originally $44.95)

The best worm bin composter

While the idea of The Worm Factory 360 composter filled with wriggling worms might make you shudder, red worms are highly effective at rendering organic waste into rich compost.

As with all things, what goes in must come out, and that's what makes worm composting — also called vermicomposting — so effective. Worms devour your food scraps, digest them, and then poop out super-rich, fertile compost loaded with nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and many micronutrients. The action of the worms also keeps the compost aerated and tumbled, so no need to do that yourself. When tended to properly, your worm composter should have no smell.

The Worm Factory 360 is small enough to sit in a sun porch or corner of the kitchen, or you can tuck it on a protected area of your patio. Worm bins do need to be kept in a temperature range of 40 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, so if outdoors in a cold winter area, you will need to bring the bin indoors for the winter.

The setup includes four trays, although you can add additional trays if you want to expand. The process of vermicomposting is simple: Add worms to the bottom tray along with organic waste, and the worms will start their magic. When the bottom tray is full, add a new tray on top.

The worms will work their way up through the trays, allowing you to rotate trays as compost breaks down. There's a spigot to drain out compost tea, and small "ladders" that make it easier for your worms to crawl into the upper trays.

With 750 reviews and an average of 4.4 stars, Amazon shoppers really like the Worm Factory 360. Satisfied buyer Chad writes, "I could not be more pleased with my purchase. I have NO worm escapees, and any excess moisture drains from the bottom spigot. My red worms are thriving and voraciously consuming the food scraps I deposit into the tray. Great product and convenient for apartment living."

You will need to stock your worm bin with red worms, so look to Uncle Jim's Red Worms for a source of 1,000 live red wigglers. Add them to the bottom bin of your composter, and the worms will do the rest.

The Worm Factory 360 comes with an instructional DVD that teaches you everything you need to know about vermicomposting. The composter is available in black, green, or terracotta.

Pros: Worms are a great way to speed up and simplify composting, and this system makes worm farming a breeze

Cons: If exposed to excessive heat or cold, the worms will die

Buy the Worm Factory 360 on Amazon starting at $95.37 (price varies by color)

Buy a starter pack of 1,000 live red worms on Amazon for $44.95

The best basic closed compost bin

If you prefer a no-frills closed compost bin that makes first-in, first-out composting a breeze, the Soil Saver Classic Compost Bin is a must-have for your garden.

The most basic type of closed composter, the Soil Saver Classic Compost Bin is basically a box made of black plastic to maintain heat and regulate moisture for quicker composting. The open bottom lets worms, moisture, and microorganisms freely enter the bin to work their composting magic on your food scraps, yard waste, and other organic trash.

The lid lifts off so you can toss in scraps easily, and locks in place when closed so hungry critters can't raid the bin. There are plenty of vents, as well, which let oxygen reach the bin's contents.

While it's not required that you mix the decomposing compost periodically, it will greatly speed up the process. Unlike tumbling or rolling compost bins, mixing the contents of a traditional closed bin means you'll need to use a shovel or pitchfork. Once the lower levels of the compost are "cooked," you simply open the sliding doors on the bin's lower edge and shovel out the black gold.

The bin's 12-cubic-foot capacity means you can provide your yard with plenty of nourishing compost throughout the year. The sturdy construction and heavy plastic won't warp, split, or crack, and is BPA-free.

Pleased Amazon buyers praise the bin's sturdy construction, ease of use, and fertile compost. Many call it "the perfect composter," and say they own two or more of the bins for full-yard composting. The few complaints mostly deal with receiving faulty products.

Pros: A very sturdy, simple design that produces fertile compost without much fuss or bother

Cons: The open bottom means you'll want to place this on dirt, not on a concrete patio

Buy the Soil Saver Classic Compost Bin on Amazon for $94.99

The best open compost bin

The Geobin Compost Bin is the perfect alternative to open, messy compost piles, plus it's easy to set up, move, and the size is adjustable.

For those who prefer the ease of an open compost pile, but aren't too fond of the uncontrolled mess, the Geobin Compost Bin is the answer. This sturdy bin holds up to 216 gallons of compost when fully assembled, and closes along the sides with heavy plastic closure keys.

The plastic mesh material provides plenty of ventilation and moisture control to your compost pile, and holds up well to all types of weather conditions. If properly maintained and balanced, odor and insects shouldn't be a problem, but critters have easy access, so keep that in mind if you live in an area with abundant wildlife.

When you want to remove compost from the bottom of the pile, just remove one or two keys, open the bin up to provide access, and shovel out your rich and fertile compost. You don't have to mix the bin's contents while they decompose, but if desired to speed up the process, you can do so with a shovel or pitchfork.

Amazon reviewer James G. writes, "Once unpacked and put together, this compost bin actually looks pretty sleek and professional in a backyard setting. The plastic, although flexible, is very durable. It would take quite a bit force to break or damage it. Composting can be as complicated or simple as one would like. The Geobin leaves most of that up to you with an uncomplicated design, easy access to the top, and well-ventilated sides. My favorite part is that this bin meets the general minimum 3'x3'x3' size requirement for hot composting."

Other owners are equally pleased. The Geobin Compost Bin has 550 reviews and an average of 4.1 stars. The few buyers who are unhappy with the bin mostly complain that they had a hard time keeping it in place.

Pros: A great alternative to a pile on the ground, this bin keeps your compost cooking and contained

Cons: Some complaints that the bin didn't remain upright

Buy the Geobin Compost Bin on Amazon for $32.38

How to compost: The basics

Compost is the end result of decomposing organic materials. The breakdown of materials frees nutrients that are then available for the roots of plants. Mixing compost into the soil around your plants improves not only the fertility of your soil. It also improves drainage and makes the soil lighter and resistant to becoming hard and compacted.

You can compost a surprisingly wide range of household waste, including:

  • Grass clippings
  • Dead leaves
  • Leather
  • Hair
  • Wood ashes
  • Cardboard
  • Coffee grounds
  • Corncobs
  • Vegetable and fruit peelings and scraps
  • Dryer lint
  • Tea bags
  • Eggshells
  • Feathers
  • Newspaper
  • Sawdust
  • Peanut shells

You should NOT compost:

  • Coal ash
  • Cat or dog feces
  • Meat or bones
  • Oil or grease
  • Toxic materials
  • Dairy products
  • Tissue paper

By combining both fresh material and dried waste, such as dead leaves, your compost pile will maintain the colonies of microorganisms essential for the decomposition process. A rough guideline is to mix three parts brown materials (dead leaves, paper, sawdust, corn cobs) to one part green materials (food scraps, weeds, coffee grounds).

A healthy compost pile generates heat, sometimes up to 160 degrees Fahrenheit at the center of a large pile. This heat accelerates the composting process. Other essentials for composting are oxygen — which is provided by turning the pile frequently — and moisture, which is added in the form of water if the materials being composted aren't already moist enough.

Leaked docs reveal McDonald's is launching a spicy chicken sandwich and spicy chicken tenders after years of demand from customers

spicy bbq sandwich mcdonald's

Spicy chicken is taking over fast food.

McDonald's is planning to launch two new items, the Spicy BBQ Sandwich and Spicy BBQ Glazed Tenders, in mid-September, according to leaked documents shared with Business Insider.

The new menu items are variations on the chain's buttermilk crispy chicken sandwich and buttermilk crispy tenders, taking the chicken and adding a Southwestern sauce with a hint of jalapeños.

The new menu items are intended to boost short-term sales and traffic at McDonald's, according to the documents.

"Hold tight, because McDonald's is bringing the heat starting in September," a McDonald's representative said in an email to Business Insider.

McDonald's has been lacking in the spicy-chicken category in recent years.

In 2006, McDonald's pulled its Hot 'N Spicy chicken sandwich from menus, acknowledging that the sandwich was perhaps too spicy for customers' tastes. McDonald's debuted a revamped version of the sandwich in 2013, but it didn't stay on the national menu in the US for long.

In 2015, Hot 'N Spicy fans started a Change.org petition calling for the fast-food giant to bring back the sandwich. One McDonald's employee told Business Insider he got requests for spicy chicken sandwiches as many as 10 times a day.

"This sandwich was a staple in my life," wrote one of the more than 300 people who signed the Change.org petition. "I miss it so much. I tried to order one today and they didn't have it, and I almost cried."

A craving for spicy chicken is sweeping fast food. Wendy's is bringing back its beloved spicy nuggets in August. And Chick-fil-A is testing an item called Spicy Chick-n-Strips, with the chain promising more spicy menu options in the future.
