Apple makes a lot of useful apps, but its best one is Reminders.

Released in 2011 as part of iOS 5, Reminders lets you create to-dos that sync across all your Apple devices, including iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers.

You don't need a good memory if you know how to use Reminders, which can be prioritized and shared in different ways. It's like having a superpower.

Here's how to unlock the power of Reminders:

Reminders comes pre-loaded on all iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers.

The Reminders app is organized with different tabs — and you can make as many as you want.

Everyone starts with the "Scheduled" and "Reminders" tabs, and you can customize it by adding new tabs like "To Do" and "Groceries."

Once inside a category, click in the space below and start typing to create a reminder. Click the "i" when you're done to add more important details.

If the collective wisdom of Harvard's 80-year-long study on happiness and every film ever made are to be believed, it's not stuff that makes us happy — it's people.

Regardless of the backdrop (holidays, birthdays, or mundane weekdays), it's our relationships with one another that lend meaning and joy to our lives.

So, unless it’s precise, like a personalized keepsake or thoughtful hobby accessory (take running for instance), you might be better off gifting an experience if your intention is to be impactful. They may not need another purse or a cutting board that can be used to artfully serve cheese. They may, instead, appreciate and remember an afternoon spent making ravioli with you and a local chef for far longer, and far more fondly.

And, contrary to most big-gesture rom-coms, an experiential gift doesn’t have to be a surprise flight to Italy or a tour of the South of France on a 50-foot yacht. You can book the chef and the ravioli and BYOB for the same as what you would have spent on the purse she'll never use or the cutting board she'll always feel slightly too guilty to give away.

Below are 11 great experience gifts that won't break the bank:

Cozymeal: cooking classes

Buy a Cozymeal Gift Card, from $50

Cozymeal lets them sign up for cooking classes to learn how to make everything from Italian pastas, to vegan soul food, to sushi for groups of one to 100 guests. They'll select an experience, pick a date, and show up to learn from one of the nation's top chefs — including a few who have worked in the world's best Michelin-starred restaurants. Classes can be held at the chef's location of choice or the gift recipient's home.

Fandango: pro-level movie night

Who doesn't love a good dressed-up dinner and a movie date, whether it's for a significant other or just you and your grandparents? In the age of Netflix, it's nice to make an occasion out of going to the movies.

How to sign, annotate, and edit a PDF on a Mac computer with Preview

$

Macbook Air

  • If you're a Mac user and you're not using Preview to view and edit PDFs, you're missing out on a great tool.
  • Preview has the power to do much more than fill out a form. You can add pop-up notes, arrows, shapes, and more.
  • The program also has great image editing capabilities.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Adobe Acrobat is a fine editing tool (if you enjoy being pestered with constant updates). But Mac users have a built-in alternative that comes with features comparable to the free version of Acrobat.

The list of ways you can manipulate a PDF or photo (including JPEG or PNG) in Preview is long. Here is just a sampling to get you started.

How to fill in and sign a form on Preview

This is the most basic function of a good PDF reader. In Preview, just click on the fillable sections and start typing.

You can also sign a fillable form in Preview.

1. Open the PDF in Preview.

2. Click Tools > Annotate > Signature.

Signature option in Tools menu

3. If you've already added a signature to Preview, it will appear in a pop-up box. Click your signature to add it, then drag it to the appropriate spot on the form.

4. If you don't have a signature or want to create a new one, click "Manage Signatures." A window will appear that allows you to create a signature on your trackpad, or scan one with your camera. Once you are satisfied, click "Done" and your signature is saved.

Create signature using track pad

One caveat: If you save a fillable form and send it to someone who will open it in Acrobat, Acrobat may see your entries on the form. You can get around this by printing and scanning the document or by printing to PDF.

How to annotate a PDF in Preview

There are numerous ways you can edit a PDF in Preview. Most of the editing tools are found under Tools > Annotate.

You can add text, arrows, circles, rectangles, and more. To customize these annotations, click the appropriate icon on the menu above the document.

  • Change the thickness of a line by clicking the line icon. A menu of line options will drop down.
  • To change the color of an arrow, shape, or line, click the outline icon. A color palette will pop down. Click on the color you want.
  • To change the fill of a shape, click the box icon. A color palette appears. For no fill, choose the white box with a red line across it.
  • Click the text icon to change the font, size, alignment, or style of added text. To change the text color, click the color box on the upper right side of the font box. A color palette will pop down.

Font color palette

You can annotate text that's already in the document with options such as highlight, strikethrough, and underline. Simply place your cursor on the text you want to annotate. Choose Tools > Annotate to see your options.

How to edit a photo in Preview

You can annotate a photo with the same tools you can use on a regular PDF. In addition, you can flip a photo horizontally or vertically, crop it, or adjust the size.

To change the orientation of a photo, the tools menu gives you options to rotate or flip the image. If you want to adjust the size, choose Tools > Adjust Size. Size adjustment comes in handy if your image is too large to send or add to a social media profile.

Here are the steps to crop a photo:

1. Place your cursor at one of the corners where you want to start cropping.

2. Drag your cursor until the dotted line is the size you want to crop.

Setting up cropping in photo

3. Choose Tools > Crop. This option will be grayed out until you have set the crop area.

You can undo any of these changes in Preview by choosing Edit > Undo. You also have the option to revert to an earlier version of the image or PDF. Just click File > Revert To. A box will pop out showing you previous saved versions of the document.

Even if you missed your chance at 100,000 points on Marriott's new luxury card, there's still a week left to snag a similar offer on its sister card

marriott st regis bora bora 3

The introductory 100,000 point welcome bonus on Marriott Bonvoy's premium credit card — the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant AmEx — may be over, but there are still a few more days to snag it on the mainstream card.

If you open the Bonvoy Boundless credit card— issued by Chase — before May 2, you can earn 100,000 bonus points when you spend $5,000 in the first three months.

Even though it has a lower fee than the premium Brilliant card, the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Card offers similarly valuable perks.

Here are some of the card's benefits.

The Bonvoy Boundless earns 6x points per dollar at Marriott hotels

The Bonvoy Boundless earns 6x points per dollar spent at participating Marriott hotels, and 2x points per dollar spent on everything else. That's the same as the premium Bonvoy Brilliant card, although that one also earns 3x points at US restaurants and on flights booked directly with the airline.

Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Card

Every year, card members get a free anniversary night

The card also offers a free-night award each year on the card-member anniversary. That award can be used at any Marriott property that would normally cost up to 35,000 points per night.

While that award price cap rules out some top properties, there are still plenty of places where that award night can be used. The premium Bonvoy Brilliant card's anniversary night can be applied to hotels that cost up to 50,000 points per night.

Just opening a Boundless Card gets automatic elite status

Just by having an open Boundless Card, you'll automatically get Silver elite status in the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program.

Silver doesn't get you much, but it's still something — you'll get a 10% bonus on points earned, priority for late checkout, access to a dedicated customer service line, free Wi-Fi, and more. While it's not a published benefit, you may also be given preferential rooms.

If you spend $35,000 on the card in a given year, you'll earn Gold status instead. That gets you a 25% bonus on points earned, complimentary internet during stays, room upgrades based on availability, and a small gift of bonus points at check-in. You'll also automatically get 15 nights' worth of elite-qualifying credit each year, so you'll have an easier time achieving Gold status— or higher — with your normal stays. The Brilliant Card from AmEx comes with Gold status by default.

Bottom line: It's a good time to open a Marriott card

No matter which card is better for you — the mainstream Bonvoy Boundless Card from Chase, or the premium Bonvoy Brilliant card from AmEx — now is a great time for Marriott loyalists to open a new card.

But remember: These 100,000-point offers are only available for a limited time, so make sure to get them before they're gone!

I traveled the world for a year and a tiny city in Bali was the one place I can see myself returning to dozens of times

ubudmarketstreet

  • I left New York a year ago to travel around the world as Business Insider's international correspondent.
  • While it would be impossible to pinpoint my favorite place, the place I want to return to soonest is the city of Ubud, on the Indonesian island of Bali.
  • Ubud has a bustling community of local Balinese, digital nomads, and vacationers exploring rice terraces, temples, spiritual retreats, yoga and meditation classes, and villas set into the countryside.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

A year ago, I left New York to travel the world. In that time, I've visited over 20 countries and dozens of cities — everywhere from China and Russia to Spain, Portugal, and Bulgaria. Each place had its joys and its frustrations.

In Tanzania, I experienced some of the most beautiful nature in the world, but it was extremely difficult to get to. The azure waters of the Atlantic in Portugal were possibly the most beautiful place I've ever gone swimming, but it came at the price of milling through hordes of British tourists. And when I visited Egypt, I got to fulfill my childhood dream of seeing the Pyramids, the Sphinx, and the ancient Egyptian temples, but I felt like I had to always be on guard from getting cheated.

As I look back now, while I can't pinpoint my favorite destination of the bunch, I do know which place I would like to return to soonest: Ubud, Bali.

Ubud is a place that could, on paper, be easy to make fun of. While it has been known as a spiritual and mystical center to Balinese for centuries — Ubud means "medicine" — it has sprouted a community of New Agey seekers and expats looking to live the good life over the last few decades.

On any given day, you'll encounter digital nomads working on startups, Westerners taking sabbaticals to join spiritual retreats, Australians starting cafes or co-working spaces, and locals living their life amidst it all. A significant percentage of the people I met had been to Ubud two, three, or four times. Many come every year and some have moved there permanently.

Bali Ubud On A Budget (3 of 45)

When I was there last May, I attended a full-day spiritual retreat that included yoga, "ecstatic dance," a cacao ceremony, and workshops of "authentic relating." If you can get past the privilege that comes with being able to take a few weeks off for "self-improvement," it's kind of beautiful how many people come to Ubud earnestly to work on themselves and improve their lives at retreats like the one I attended.

For my part, I was skeptical, scoffing at the retreat even as I took part in it. But the more I let down my guard and met the retreat on its own terms, the more I was rewarded. By the end of the day, I felt like I had shaken off a long-held resentment, cried twice, and made a few friends that I'm still keeping in touch with today.

That's kind of the way it goes in Ubud. Someone suggests an activity that sounds far out of your comfort zone and you just shrug and go, "Why not?"

Bali Ubud On A Budget (25 of 45)

Best things to do in Ubud

One of the joys of visiting Ubud is seeing how Indonesians, local Balinese, and expats use the city as their canvas to create unique places and experiences.

One night while in Ubud, one of my newfound friends suggested we go to Bali Dacha, a Russian-style spa club built around a villa estate in the jungle outskirts of Ubud. Set in what feels like a giant treehouse, Bali Dacha has multiple saunas, steam rooms, pools, and bonfires to hang in and around. The crowd is mostly Russians (a dacha is a Russian cottage), with some Europeans, Americans, and Aussies mixed in.

When I visited, there was a dance party going on, but few people were drinking. It's one of those Ubud places where, at certain points, say, when discussing the rise of global fascism by a bonfire with a stranger, making dirty jokes in broken English with a group of naked Russians in a sauna, or meeting a model in a darkened pool, you ask yourself: Is this real? The blasting psychedelic trance music and the Russian guy dancing with a Native American headdress does nothing to clear up the confusion.

Then there is the Yoga Barn, a popular retreat center that offers comfortable, accessible classes ranging from every kind of yoga discipline to sound healing. To give you an idea of the kind of place Ubud is, the most difficult place to get into isn't a swanky nightclub, it's the Yoga Barn. During peak months, classes like "sound healing" can have lines to get in that wrap around the block. I never took it, but every person I met that had said the sound healing class was "life-changing."

For outdoorsy folks, there are tons of gorgeous hikes, like theCampuhan Ridge Walk, which takes you along a high ridge between two rivers, or a night hike up Mount Batur to see one of the most spectacular sunrises in the world.

For history buffs and spiritualists, there are tons of temples spread across Ubud and the surrounding areas. Some are in the central town, while others are hidden in small towns, mountain valleys, and the jungle.

One of my favorites to explore was the Sacred Monkey Forest, a nature reserve housing hundreds of wild monkeys. The gorgeous forest and temple complex have been home to monkeys for hundreds of years, and the area is considered a holy place on the island. When I went, I came within feet of dozens of monkeys — and I saw monkeys actually land on top of other visitors.

Ubud is known as a paradise for vegans and raw food eaters, but that mostly comes from the expats who have made the city their home. The Balinese cook up fresh fish and Indonesian specialties in warungs, or family-owned restaurants, throughout the city. They're worth sampling.

Ubud travel tips: Avoid peak tourist season and eat local

A word of warning to would-be visitors: Over-tourism is a major problem — the number of annual tourists has jumped from 2.2 million in 1990 to 13.7 million last year — and the city buckles from the weight of it in the peak summer months. The traffic of thousands of mopeds and motorbikes chokes the city's jungle-lined streets to the point where it can take an hour to move a few miles.

Many foreigners are beginning to work with locals in response to the over-tourism to build sustainable tourism businesses.

To mitigate the over-tourism when I visited, I came during an off-peak month, stayed a short motorbike ride outside the city in an adjacent suburb, and tried my best to eat and shop at the various local Balinese owned eateries, cafes, and shops.

An acquaintance of mine who recently visited the city for a few weeks posted a sentiment on Facebook that I feel perfectly captures Ubud: "It's so easy to get sucked into the Vortex of Ubud. To wonder if you ever need to leave this place again. It feels like you don't need to do anything except for [sic] wander around just have nice conversations with people about how to live a healthier, happier life."

After the week in the city, I was no longer questioning why the first thing a taxi driver just outside the airport said to me was, "Welcome back. So, how many times have you been to Bali?"

I rely almost exclusively on these under-$20 workout shorts from Target — they're durable, comfortable, and cheap

target running shorts 2

  • For the last six to seven years, I've bought my athletic shorts from Target's affordable C9 Champion line of activewear.
  • They start at just $13 a pair and most styles cost less than $20. Though the styles switch out every season, the quality of every pair I've tried has been consistent and reliable.
  • They're comfortable, breathable, and durable, featuring stretchy waistbands, moisture-wicking and quick-dry fabrics, and pockets to stash your essentials as you work out.

Many years ago while wandering the aisles of Target (as one does), I found myself doing an impromptu restock of activewear. At the time, as a student on a budget, I was mostly drawn to the affordable prices. I worked out three to four times a week, so I needed a healthy rotation of athletic clothes but also didn't want to spend a lot of money on each piece.

I thought the under-$20 C9 Champion shorts I picked up were a temporary fix, but I've since discovered that they're actually really great and last for years of consistent use. Now when I'm at Target, I'm a shopper on a mission and beeline towards the activewear section, where the Target-exclusive C9 Champion brand can be found all over, from sports bras to socks

target running shorts

All the shorts I've tried from the line have been comfortable, breathable, and durable. The specific styles seem to rotate out every season, but in general they are made from polyester and Spandex, come in a variety of colors and prints, and hit comfortably at or above the waist. The majority cost under $20, but the most expensive pairs are still only $25.

While I mostly wear leggings in the fall and winter, I switch over to shorts in the spring and summer to give my legs some air. The C9 Champion shorts work well for a variety of activities, including running, HIIT workouts, and weight training, moving flexibly with your legs and never getting in the way. They don't chafe your skin and stay dry and breathable throughout your workout.

The stretchiness of the waistband and strength of the fabric stay intact even after a few years of use and multiple washes, though some of the color can fade. I wasn't expecting this level of durability from shorts of this price, but I've been impressed with how much value I've been able to squeeze out of them.

This season, I bought these mid-rise shorts in mauve ($16.99) and these high-waisted shorts in purple ($19.99). They both have a moisture-wicking, quick-drying inner brief. The mid-rise shorts have a hidden pocket on the inside of the waistband, while the high-waisted shorts have a zippered pocket on the back of the waistband, both of which I appreciate and rely on to store my apartment keys when I run outdoors.

With how well Target's shorts have treated me over the years, it's hard for me to justify paying any more for a pair of shorts. What I thought was going to be a one-time buy has turned me into a loyal C9 Champion customer.

Shop all C9 Champion shorts, starting at $12.99, at Target here

JBL

  • Teens can be a daunting demographic to buy for — they're often the first to forecast the next "Big Thing" but also don't have the expendable income to buy everything they'd like to have.
  • To help lessen the stress of shopping for them, I've rounded up 30+ solid gifts they'll love getting.

Among the most difficult gifts to get on your list are likely those allotted to teens. They're a daunting demographic to buy for. They're often the first people clued in to hype products and cultural phenomena like Pop Sockets that you're probably not as aware of — but they also don't have the deep pockets to get everything they want for themselves. Thankfully, that leaves plenty of opportunities open for you.

Below, you'll find 35 gifts teens will be happy to receive. There's useful technology like mini projectors and shower speakers as well as of-the-moment must-haves like instant cameras and light boxes that mimic cinema marquees — and you can feel good knowing you can cross off one of the tougher gifts with confidence.

Below are 35 best gifts for teens to get you started:

Fun and useful PopSockets for the back of their phone

PopSockets, available at PopSockets, from $10

PopSockets have become their own cultural phenomenon in recent years, and they're surprisingly useful. Get your teen one for their own phone, kindle, or tablet, and depending on their age, you may find it's the gift they're most excited about. It doesn't hurt that there's free domestic shipping on orders over $20, or that you can actually design your own.

A cult-favorite hair towel that reduces damage and cuts drying time by 50%

Aquis Rapid Dry Hair Towel, available on Amazon and Sephora, from $20.99

Aquis' cult-favorite hair towels can cut the amount of time it takes your hair to dry in half — a claim we're happy to report holds up. The proprietary fabric also means there's less damage to wet hair while it dries. If they've ever complained about frizzy hair, this and a silk pillowcase are thoughtful gifts they'll actually use. Keds was the first to make an affordable, comfortable women’s sneaker 103 years ago — here's how the company stays relevant today

keds sneakers 3

  • Women's shoe company Keds, which launched 103 years ago in 1916, is synonymous with the Champion Originals white sneaker ($39.95).
  • As an accessible, versatile, and comfortable sneaker, it inspired women "to be who they want to be and go where they want to go."
  • Today, this silhouette is still beloved and iconic, but the brand is also evolving by offering limited-edition collaborations and expanding its styles to further address the needs of modern women.

Jennifer Grey laced up these bright white shoes in "Dirty Dancing." So did Yoko Ono on her wedding day. At some point in your life, you, a friend, your mother, or your grandmother probably all did at some point, too.

We're talking, of course, about the iconic Keds Champion sneakers

American culture is peppered with shoes that have stood the test of time, from Air Jordans to Converse All-Stars. Keds is one of those beloved few.

The shoe company has a rich history, going all the way back to 1916, when the US Rubber Company consolidated its 30 footwear brands under one name: Keds. That year, Keds introduced a canvas-topped, rubber-soled shoe and stamped it with its blue label.

Why the Keds Champion was and is so important

Today, a canvas, rubber-soled shoe isn't much cause for celebration, but its introduction then was nothing short of revolutionary. Because it was one of the first women's footwear options to be simultaneously accessible, fashionable, and comfortable, the Keds Champion stood as a symbol of mobility: If a woman wanted to do something or go somewhere, she could with a pair of Keds.

The company's roots in blazing a path for women are still central to how it conducts business today. Keds has an all-women leadership team and an all-women product development team, and the company as a whole is 88% women. Worn by athletes, actresses, and First Ladies alike, it has never prescribed specific behaviors that its fans and customers should abide by. Its only mission, from the beginning, has been an open and empowering one of "Ladies First."

Its most popular and recognizable silhouette, the Champion Originals, hasn't changed much since it first entered the American consciousness 103 years ago, and its popularity even today is a testament to the simplicity, versatility, and forethought of this design.

keds sneakers 5

How Keds continues to innovate

Though it probably could ride on the success of the Champion Originals alone for the next hundred years, Keds continues to find new ways to keep the brand fresh and interesting.

Its full collection of styles includes lace ups, slip ons, flats, and boots in a variety of materials like wool and leather. You can get a fresh new pair of white Champion Originals, but you can be more adventurous with tall platform sneakers or glittery shoes if you want. The company is also experimenting with stylish athleisure options with its Studio collection of lightweight sneakers.

Collaborations with other brands are best-selling favorites as well. The Rifle Paper Co. collection of pretty embroidered and painted floral patterns is the much nicer execution of all those times you tried to paint your own canvas shoes, while the Ladies for Ladies collection currently features the work of a handbag designer who uses the same marine-grade material as lobstermen's bait bags.

Beyond comfort and variety, Keds is the ideal brand for the value-conscious shoe lover — most of its styles cost around just $50. In fact, the three styles we tried from the brand, which perfectly capture its range from classic to modern silhouettes, cost $40 to $60.

Keds, then and now

More than a hundred years ago, Keds snagged the first-mover advantage with its game-changing Champion sneaker for women and set the wheels in motion to change the way women walk, run, skip, and dance.

Gillian Meek, the President of Keds, says, "Keds has stood the test of time by staying true to our roots, making the best sneakers for women. In today’s environment, our classic Champion sneaker is our icon that empowers women to be who they want to be and go where they want to go. The Champion is and always has been a versatile, feminine and accessible style to women of all ages and lifestyles."

Champion Originals

Keds Champion Originals, from $39.95, available here: Keds, Amazon, Zappos

Before realizing that Keds was a women-specific brand, I associated it with the women in my life. My mom, my grandmother, my sisters, and my cousins have each, at one point or another, been recorded in my memory running around the backyard or watering flowers on our home's sunny porch in slight white sneakers. I enjoy thinking of them while wearing my own pair. And I'm happy to know that, unlike most companies, Keds team is comprised of mostly women.

As an adult, the things I love about Keds haven't changed much since being a kid. They're versatile enough for any outfit, cheap enough to regularly re-up if they're worn into the ground, and there's something wonderful about functional, rubber-soled sneakers that are simultaneously so lightweight and feminine in style. They're the perfect choice for sundresses, loose jeans, and everything in between. —Mara Leighton, Insider Picks reporter

Studio Jumper

Keds Studio Jumper, $59.95 (originally $89.95) [You save $30], available here: Keds

Keds' foray into athleisure-esque styles through its Studio Collection is a successful yet underrated part of the brand that I wish more people knew about. The intersections of style, performance, and comfort are best highlighted in the slip-on Studio Jumper sneaker, which comes in four attractive colors: white, peach, light pink, and light gray.

I opted for the gray one, and it has become the easiest shoe to pull on in the mornings — the light color goes with everything, they look casual but they're also more sleek than a full-on running sneaker, and I can walk for miles in them with no complaints.

The stretch knit uppers give a sock-like fit that mold to your feet, but are also breathable, and elastic bands wrap over the fronts for an additional layer of support. Despite the close fit, you can still wear socks with your usual size since the material is stretchy. Meanwhile, the foot beds and soles are made from lightweight, cushioned foam, plus Keds adds neoprene padding at the heel for even more comfort. Because they're so light, they make a great travel or summer sneaker. —Connie Chen, Insider Picks reporter

Double Decker

Keds Double Decker Perforated Suede Sneaker, from $34.06, available here: Keds, Amazon

As much as I love sneakers, I never had tried a pair of Keds until recently — I was always more of a Converse girl. After learning more about the company's history, though, I'm excited to rock my new pair of Keds. Keds released the first ever women's sneaker in 1916 — and you can still find that classic Champion style worn today.

While I loved learning about how Keds puts their motto, Ladies First, into action, there's got to be more than just a great mission to keep a business running for over 100 years. It's all about the product, and Keds really are great. They're doing well at making simple, cute styles that are comfortable and affordable.

I didn't realize, though, that Keds had so many other options besides their classic Champion style. I tried the Double Decker Slip-Ons in a nice light gray color that's perfect for spring. They have a perforated detail on the suede that adds some interest, and the inside of the shoe is super comfortable, thanks to Keds' new Dreamy Foam cushioned footbed. If you're between sizes though, I would choose the bigger one, as I did find them a little tight. But, I think the suede will stretch with wear, so I'm excited to bring these out come spring. —Remi Rosmarin, Insider Picks reporter

The best mops you can buy

$

  • Other than walls, the largest surface area in your home that needs to be cleaned regularly is the floor, and that means mopping.
  • Libman Spin Mop and Bucketgives you shiny clean floors in kitchens, bathrooms, and mudrooms, and can help keep wood floors gleaming.

Every home needs a mop. For regular upkeeping of hard surfaces — wood, laminate, concrete, stone, etc. — a mop is an effective tool, even if it's basic. But mopping is also a dreaded chore.

Mopping doesn't have to be difficult. A tip to mopping success is to always sweep or vacuum first so that all of the loose soil is removed. That way, you're not just swishing it around only to find it later built-up in a corner. Another tip is to mop frequently so that it is a quick, weekly job. Waiting until the floor is caked with grime is what makes mopping such a backbreaker.

For clean floors, always use a clean mop. If the mop smells bad from bacteria growing in the mop head or looks really dirty, it is going to spread all of the yuck back over your floors. Luckily, many of today's mops have removable heads that can be easily washed and disinfected in a washer.

With the right tools and the right cleaners, mopping can be simple. Since all of the floors in my home require mopping, I've been testing mops and cleaning products for decades. And, as a home economist for companies and publications, you can be assured that I'm always looking for the most effective, easiest to use, and the best value in products.

Here are the best mops you can buy in 2019:

Read on in the slides below to check out our top picks.

The best mop overall

Why you'll love it: With the Libman Spin Mop and Bucket you can clean every hard surface floor in your home with the same mop, from dry-dusting hardwood to wet mopping sticky kitchen messes.

If you have multiple types of hard surface floors to clean in your home, it can be expensive to buy several different mops and frustrating to store them. With the Libman Spin Mop and Bucket, you can clean every floor with just one mop.

Libman combined a deep-cleaning microfiber mop and a mop bucket with a stainless-steel spin chamber to give you everything you need for mopping. The microfiber mop works great as both a dry-dust mop and a slightly damp mop for hardwood floors. Then, with the right cleaning solution, it is perfect for scrubbing dirty floors in the bathroom and kitchen. The head is removable from the handle and can go straight into the washing machine to be cleaned.

I am particularly impressed with the durable, adjustable stainless-steel mop handle and the stainless-steel spin bucket. Other brands have plastic components that are more prone to breaking. With the lever system to activate the spinning mechanism, my hands never have to touch the mopping water and I can adjust the amount of moisture left in the mop head. I've been using it for many months with no issues. It is good to know that replacement mop heads are available if this one ever wears out.

Other users seem to like the product as well, giving it a nearly 4-star rating on Amazon. One customer wrote, "I think the spin mechanism works great and find this very versatile and efficient. I see others who complain it breaks. No need to be treating the spin rinse like you are jacking up a car."

Pros: Simple to use for all hard surface floors, hands never have to touch water, easy to assemble, removable and replaceable mop head

Cons: Plastic lever can break if used with excessive force

Buy the Libman Spin Mop and Bucket on Amazon.com for $33.92

The best budget mop

Why you'll love it: Want clean floors without breaking the bank? Libman Wonder Mop uses microfiber strips, wrings out easily (but keeps hands dry), and costs less than $10.

If you are looking for a good, basic mop, the Libman Wonder Mop is a great start. It is compact, the mop head can be removed and tossed in the washer for a good cleaning, the built-in wringer keeps your hands out of the cleaning solution, and it is inexpensive but durable.

I have owned a Wonder Mop for many years and found an amazing number of ways to use it beyond mopping the floor. Since the head is made of microfiber that attracts dust, I pull down the wringer sleeve to shorten the mop fibers into a "stiff brush." I then use the mop to reach corners that seem to attract every spider web and insect known to man. I've used the mop to absorb water from ice chests and to capture spills in car trunks. And, I've mopped a few floors as well.

Since I use it so often, I buy a couple of replacement heads so I can always be sure to have an extra for non-mopping use. When I do use it for regular mopping, I find that with hot water and a good floor cleaner, the mop does a very good job.

Nearly 75 percent of Walmart customers giving the Wonder Mop 5 stars. One customer wrote, "I have puppies in my kitchen and needed a mop that would be easy to use and would actually clean up accidents on the floor ... and would be durable and long lasting. The Libman Wonder Mop does everything that I need it to do and allows me to rinse, wring, and clean the floors without ever having to get my hands wet or dirty."

Pros: Microfiber head is removable and machine washable, wringing action keeps hands dry, can be used wet or dry, the mop head is replaceable

Cons: Wringer twisting action can be difficult for someone with limited hand and wrist movement

Buy Libman Wonder Mop from Walmart for $8.78

The best mop for wood floors

Why you'll love it: Easy to use and a top performer, the Swiffer WetJet Wood Mopping Kit gives you everything you need for shiny, streak-free wood floors.

Whether you have solid hardwood or engineered hardwood floors, the Swiffer WetJet Wood Mop will make cleaning them a breeze. With disposable cleaning pads and an all-in-one mop and cleaning solution, it is a no-mess, no-fuss cleaning system.

Hardwood floors can easily be ruined if you don't clean them correctly. They don't stand up well to regular mopping with a strong cleaner and lots of water. Instead, when muddy tracks and spills happen, a delicate touch is best. As with any floor, they must be swept, vacuumed, or dry-dusted before any cleaning with a mop.

I love the Swiffer WetJet Wood Mopping Kit for many reasons. The pads are disposable so I can begin each cleaning session with a fresh surface. The cleaning solution is "built-in" to the mop so with just a touch of the battery-operated micro-mist spray, I can add the solution to the floor while I mop. And, as a bonus, the nozzles are illuminated so I can see just how much solution is hitting the floor and check if the area is dry after mopping.

When you purchase a Swiffer WetJet Wood Kit, you get the power mop, five mopping pads, a bottle of wood floor cleaner, and four batteries. You can easily buy refill bottles and pads and there are cleaning solutions for other types of floors like vinyl, stone, and ceramic tile.

With a rating of 4.2 stars on Amazon, plenty of users have found the mop convenient as well. If you have problems with the Swiffer WetJet, Procter & Gamble's customer service is very helpful with tips to get you mopping again.

Pros: Compact, all-in-one mop and floor cleaner, cleaning solutions for other types of floors are interchangeable, refills simple to find, great customer service

Cons: Spray nozzles can become clogged if the mop isn't used regularly, cleaning pads aren't reusable, pricier to maintain

Buy Swiffer WetJet Wood Mopping Kit from Amazon for $18.10 (originally $21.46)

I tried In-N-Out and Whataburger side by side — and it's obvious which one is better

Whataburger, In-N-Out

  • Whataburger is to Texas what In-N-Out is to California, and both are family-owned, regional fast food chains.
  • Texans swear by Whatabuger, while Californians claim In-N-Out is the best.
  • I ordered a burger, large fries, and a chocolate milkshake from each to see which one is actually better.
  • I preferred In-N-Out's shake and burger, but Whataburger won in the fries department.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Whataburger is to Texas what In-N-Out is to California. Both companies are still family-owned, regional chains — an anomaly in a market that's dominated by national multimillion-dollar fast-food companies.

In-N-Outs are scattered throughout the Southwest, while Whataburger locations line the South from New Mexico to Florida.

They meet in the middle, in Dallas, Texas, where I ate both side by side in a taste test.

While Texans swear by Whataburger's more Southern menu items — Texas toast, patty melts, biscuits — Californians rave about In-N-Out's fresh ingredients and "animal-style" burgers. I ordered a burger, large fries, and a chocolate milkshake.

SEE ALSO: People are going crazy over fries that are covered with as much stuff as possible

My first stop was Whataburger. The building is outlined in a classic orange trimming, making it hard to miss when you're cruising down a Texas highway at 80 mph.

Part of Whataburger's Southern charm is displayed right on their windows. There's an American flag and posters repping the neighborhood sports teams.

They take pride in their history — found in most Whataburger restaurants is a framed portrait of the chain's founder, Harmon Dobson, and the original location, which opened in Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1950 (right).

In case you missed it, Amazon recently eclipsed traditional retailers in a section of once-hallowed ground: wedding registries. Ranking higher than Macy's and even ahead of fresher faces like Zola, Amazon is now considered the most popular wedding registry site in the country. It's already where as much as 75% of US online shoppers buy holiday gifts — so it's not exactly surprising the trend has reached soon-to-be newlyweds.

It also has a cornucopia of perks. An Amazon Wedding Registry means you can register for pretty much anything — from camping tents to board games to champagne glasses — all in one spot. It has the world's largest selection, and all eligible gifts will get fast and free two-day shipping. Unlike many brands with only a couple national warehouses, Amazon has 140 fulfillment centers in over 29 states so no matter where you are, you'll likely be able to get your gift delivered in two days or less. In case you don't love it, you'll have 180 days to return gifts.

Guests can also "group gift" items with a higher price tag. Once you enable Group Gifts on one or more items in your Amazon Wedding Registry, guests will be able to see the amount already contributed as well as the remaining contribution amount available. You can even add personal notes, pictures, and highlights on the items you love so that guests have a better idea of why you picked something.

You can also save up to 20% off in a "special completion discount" on any items left on your registry that you still want to buy, and Amazon will keep a running list of who purchased which gift so you can easily send out thank you messages after the wedding.

But Amazon's intense variety can also be a hurdle to curating a useful, pared-down list of the essentials needed for married life. Below, you'll find 30 of the best options to consider as a jumping-off point.

Start your Amazon Wedding Registry here. Find suggestions for it below:

A stylish dual-compartment trashcan

Simplehuman Dual Compartment Trashcan, $199.99

The two separate compartments make sorting and disposing of trash and recyclables easy, and the built-in bag dispenser ensures that you can simply replace the garbage bag without rummaging around your kitchen for more of them. One of the Chase Sapphire card's most overlooked benefits is also one of its most valuable

$

Business Insider may receive a commission from The Points Guy Affiliate Network if you apply for a credit card, but our reporting and recommendations are always independent and objective.

David Slotnick Rental Car

  • The Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card comes with free primary rental car insurance.
  • As long as you use the card to pay for the rental, you'll be covered for any loss or damage to the car.
  • You'll also earn 3x points per dollar spent on the rental.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve is a phenomenal all-around credit card, but one of its most forgotten features is also among its most valuable — especially if you ever rent cars.

Rental cars are often a necessity when you travel, assuming that you're looking to get anywhere off the beaten path or out of the city, where public transit may be more limited.

While rental car costs can add up — between gas and taxes and fees — the Sapphire Reserve (and its sister, the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card) comes with primary rental car insurance, meaning you can save money on the rental agency's collision/loss damage waiver and accident coverage. Here's how it works.

The thing that makes the Sapphire Reserve's rental insurance so useful is that it's primary

When rental car insurance is primary, it means that it applies before your main personal insurance policy, and covers full damages or loss due to collisions or theft. That means you won't have to file a claim with your own insurance, so you won't have to pay a deductible or potentially see your rates increase.

Secondary coverage, on the other hand, takes effect after your personal insurance. It often has a deductible, and may not cover the full cost of the repair or replacement. Of course, if you don't have personal car insurance (because you don't have a car), most secondary coverage becomes primary.

The free auto rental collision damage waiver covers up to $75,000 of coverage for damage or loss in the event of theft or collisions, and it applies both in the US and abroad. Both the cardholder and any authorized drivers listed on the rental are covered.

In order to take advantage of the primary rental car insurance that comes with your Sapphire Preferred or Reserve, simply decline the "collision damage waiver" or "loss damage waiver" offered by the rental agency, and pay with your Sapphire card instead.

Keep in mind, though, that the Chase insurance doesn't include liability coverage,. If your personal auto insurance includes liability coverage, you're all set, but if you don't have auto insurance otherwise, you should consider purchasing that from the rental agency. I live in New York City and don't own a car, so I don't have auto insurance — whenever I rent a car, I decline the collision/loss coverage, but always purchase liability insurance to be on the safe side.

You can get a few other savings and benefits, too

Having the Chase Sapphire Reserve entitles you to a special privileges with a few major car rental agencies.

At National Car Rental, you can get complimentary Executive level elite status in the agency's loyalty program, Executive Club. That gets you an upgraded car type, faster rentals, a better choice of cars, waived fees to add a second driver to your account, and more. You can also get a discount of up to 25% when you book directly, pay with the Sapphire Reserve, and use the discount code 5030849.

You can also get benefits with Avis by activating complimentary Avis Preferred membership (although this is available even if you don't have the Sapphire Reserve). That entitles you to Avis Preferred Service, up to 50% more rewards points on rentals, and complementary upgrades where available. You can also get discounts of up to 30% with the code S107100 when you pay with the card.

Finally, Sapphire Reserve cardholders can get benefits with Silvercar — primarily, a 30% discount.

To activate these deals, log into your Chase account, and visit the Sapphire Reserve's Card Benefits page.

8 of the best credit card offers this month — including 2 huge hotel bonuses that end soon

Credit Card Roundup April 2019

The fastest way to earn rewards points, cash back, and frequent-flyer miles is to open a new credit card and earn its sign-up or welcome bonus.

Credit card issuers like Chase and AmEx offer huge bonuses to attract customers, while designing card features with long-term, continuing value in an effort to keep them. This offers consumers a chance to take advantage of these bonuses, perks, and features.

You can read more about earning new card-member bonuses and how that will affect your credit score here, or scroll down to find some of the best offers available this month.

Keep in mind that we're focusing on the rewards and perks that make these credit cards great options, not things like interest rates and late fees, which can far outweigh the value of any rewards.

When you're working to earn credit card rewards, it's important to practice financial discipline, like paying your balances off in full each month, making payments on time, and not spending more than you can afford to pay back. Basically, treat your credit card like a debit card.

1. Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card

Sign-up bonus: 100,000 Marriott Bonvoy points (after spending $5,000 in the first three months). Offer ends May 2.

While the limited-time offer on Marriott's premium card, the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card— is over, there are still a few more days to snag it on the mainstream version of the personal card: The Marriott Bonvoy Boundless credit card, which is issued by Chase.

The Bonvoy Boundless offer — 100,000 Marriott points if you spend $5,000 in the first three months — ends on May 2.

Learn more: The best credit card rewards, bonuses, and benefits of 2019

Like the Brilliant, the Boundless offers a free night award each year on your cardholder anniversary; the difference is that it's only good on rooms that would cost up to 35,000 points per night, rather than 50,000. Fortunately, that still includes plenty of properties.

The Boundless card comes with complimentary Silver elite status. Silver doesn't get you as much as Gold, but it's still something. You'll get a 10% bonus on points earned, priority for late checkout, access to a dedicated customer service line, free Wi-Fi, and more. While it's not a published benefit, you may also be given preferential rooms. You can get Gold status if you spend $35,000 or more in a calendar year. You'll also get 15 qualifying nights' worth of elite credit each calendar year, making it easier to earn Gold status or higher through hotel stays.

The card earns 6x points per dollar spent at Marriott hotels, and 2x points per dollar on everything else.

2. IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card

Sign-up bonus: Up to 120,000 points (80,000 points after spending $2,000 in the first three months; an additional 40,000 points after spending a total of $5,000 in the first six months). Offer ends May 2.

IHG is the parent company of a handful of hotel chains, including Holiday Inn. The company has more than 5,600 properties around the world, making it the second-largest hotel brand, behind Marriott. IHG has a wide range of properties from budget options like the Holiday Inn Express, to luxurious Regent and InterContinental hotels and resorts.

IHG's Rewards Club program is often overlooked— I know I'm guilty of passing it over without a second look in favor of Hilton Honors or Marriott Bonvoy (and back in the day, Starwood Preferred Guest).

However, the program is worth a second look, and a newly increased sign-up bonus on its primary credit card offers a perfect opportunity.

Right now, the IHG Rewards Club Premier card has a sign-up bonus of up to 120,000 points that is broken up into two parts. First, you'll earn 80,000 points if you spend $2,000 in the first three months. Then, you'll earn the remaining 40,000 points when you spend an additional $3,000 within the first six months (for a total of $5,000).

IHG recently shared that this bonus will only be around for a limited time, and the end date has been announced: May 2.

Rooms can cost as little at 10,000 points per night, depending on the property and its location within a city. The bonus is enough to cover almost two weeks' worth of nights at a Holiday Inn Express — even some in prime markets — or two to four nights at top InterContinental locations.

The card earns 10x points per dollar spent at IHG hotels, 2x points per dollar spent at gas stations, grocery stores, and restaurants, and 1x point on everything else.

It also comes with automatic Platinum elite status, which entitles you to a 50% bonus on points earned during a stay, complimentary room upgrades, late checkout when available, and guaranteed room availability with 72 hours' notice — helpful if you have a last-minute trip.

The Premier card offers an annual anniversary free night certificate that can be used at any category 1-7 hotel (hotels that cost 40,000 points per night or less). While that means that some of IHG's most premium locations are excluded, the certificate is still valid at a ton of locations all around the world.

For instance, I didn't have trouble finding properties in major cities like New York and Chicago during peak travel season — all charging well upward of $200 — that accept the free night certificate. That more than makes up for the card's $89 annual fee.

Click here to learn more about the IHG Rewards Club Premier from Insider Picks' partner: The Points Guy.

3. United Explorer Card

Sign-up bonus: Up to 60,000 United miles (40,000 after spending $2,000 in the first three months, and an additional 20,000 miles after spending a total of $8,000 in the first six months). Offer ends May 16.

Last year, United and Chase re-launched their co-branded credit card, slightly changing the name, but more importantly, tweaking the benefits and improving how the card earns points. Previously, the card earned 2x miles on every dollar spent with United Airlines and 1x dollar on everything else. Now, the card also earns 2x points at restaurants and hotels.

This sign-up bonus is one of the better public offers we've seen on this card, given the spending requirement, but it's only available until May 16.

The card offers a free checked bag when you use your card to purchase your tickets, priority boarding as long as you have the open card attached to your MileagePlus account, 25% off in-flight purchases, and a fee credit to cover your application to Global Entry or TSA PreCheck.

The United Explorer also has two benefits that are unique among US airline credit cards in the same class.

First, you'll get two complimentary United Club lounge passes each year. In the lounges, you can enjoy comfortable seating, Wi-Fi, free food and drinks, and more before your flight. Normally, one-time entry to a United Club would cost $59 if you didn't have a membership.

Second, although this is an unpublished benefit, United cardholders also get access to more saver award space than other United members — that makes it easier to find good flights when it's time to use your miles.

The card has a $95 annual fee, which is waived the first year.

4. Chase Sapphire Preferred Card

Puerto Rico Jan 2019_Chase Sapphire Preferred Credit Card 25

Sign-up bonus: 60,000 points (after spending $4,000 in the first three months)

The Sapphire Preferred is one of the most popular all-around rewards credit cards, and it's easy to see why. This card earns 2x points per dollar spent on just about all travel and dining purchases, and 1x point on everything else. It also comes with a ton of travel and purchase protections, such as rental car insurance, trip delay coverage, and extended warranty.

The card's sign-up bonus was just raised for the first time since 2015— it's now 60,000 Ultimate Rewards (UR) points. That's worth, at the very least, $600 as cash back or gift cards. However, if you book travel through the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal and use points to pay, you'll get a 25% bonus, making points worth 1.25 cents each. That means that the sign-up bonus would be worth $750.

Even more lucrative — the Chase Sapphire Preferred lets you transfer your UR points to a few different frequent-flyer and hotel-loyalty programs. This comes in handy because in many cases it costs fewer points to book a trip if you go through one of those programs, as opposed to using the points as cash. You can read more about why transferring points to frequent-flyer programs gets you more value here.

This all comes for a fairly standard annual fee of $95, which is not waived the first year.

5. Platinum Card® from American Express

amex biz plat

Welcome Offer: 60,000 points (after spending $5,000 in the first three months).

The American Express Platinum card has one of the highest annual fees of any consumer credit or charge card — $550 — but as AmEx's flagship product, this premium credit card offers a tremendous amount of value to offset that fee. For example, I got more than $2,000 worth of value in my first year with the card.

The card earns Membership Rewards points, the currency in AmEx's loyalty program, which can be exchanged for statement credits or cash back, used to book travel through AmEx's travel website, or, to get the most value, transferred to any of 17 airline and three hotel transfer partners (transferable points are among the best). Travel website The Points Guy lists a valuation of 2¢ per membership rewards point; based on that, the welcome offer is worth about $1,200.

The Platinum Card earns an incredible 5x points on airfare purchased directly from the airline, and offers an airline fee credit of up to $200 each calendar year, and up to $200 in Uber credits each card member year.

It also grants the cardholder access to more than 1,200 airport lounges around the world, including Delta Sky Clubs and AmEx's own Centurion Lounges.

Other benefits include automatic Gold elite status in the Marriott and Hilton loyalty programs, a statement credit up to $100 to cover enrollment in Global Entry/TSA PreCheck, concierge service, access to exclusive events, and much more.

If you're an active military servicemember, you can get the AmEx Platinum Card's fee waived.

You can read our complete review of the card here.

7. Wells Fargo Propel American Express® Card

https_%2F%2Fblogs images.forbes.com%2Fthepointsguy%2Ffiles%2F2018%2F07%2FNY City Cards wells fargo propel 8 1200x800

Welcome offer: 30,000 Go Far points (after spending $3,000 in the first three months).

This card from Wells Fargo has one of the more attractive rewards offerings you'll find from a no-annual-fee card. The current Propel card is a relaunch of an old product — Wells Fargo stopped accepting applications for the old card a year ago, before announcing the new product and reopening applications this summer.

The card earns 3x points on all travel, dining, and select streaming services (and 1x point on everything else). If that sounds familiar, it's because it's almost the same as the popular Chase Sapphire Reserve.

There are key differences between the cards. The Propel lets you redeem points for 1¢ each toward cash back, merchandise, travel, or more, while the Sapphire Reserve offers a range of more valuable redemption options — it's easy to get at least 50% more value for Chase points. Plus, the Sapphire Reserve offers a number of premium perks that the Propel doesn't, like airport lounge access, a $300 annual travel credit travel delay insurance, and more.

Of course, the Sapphire Reserve also comes with a $450 annual fee, while the Wells Fargo Propel doesn't have a fee. Between the new member offer, and the solid earning rate on popular spend categories, the Propel makes a decent option for those who don't travel often, or who aren't comfortable floating a large annual fee.

We named the Propel the best no-fee card of 2018.

8. Chase Sapphire Reserve

Card Group — Chase Sapphire Preferred Chase Sapphire Reserve_21 1

Sign-up bonus: 50,000 points (after spending $4,000 in the first three months).

The Sapphire Reserve is basically a beefier version of the Preferred. While the card comes with the same sign-up bonus, it earns points on everyday spending faster, nabbing a higher 3x points per dollar spent on travel and dining purchases, and 1x on everything else. It also offers similar, though in many cases, enhanced travel and purchase protections.

Unlike the Preferred, the Sapphire Reserve comes with a Priority Pass Select membership, which gets you and any travel companions free access to more than 1,000 airport lounges around the world.

You can use points from the Reserve the same ways as with the Preferred, except that you'll get a 50% bonus when booking travel through Chase, making your points worth 1.5¢ each.

The card carries a higher annual fee than the Preferred: $450. However, it also comes with a $300 travel credit each card member year. Each year, you'll get statement credits for the first $300 in travel-related purchases you make, including things like subway fare, taxis, parking, and tolls, as well as airfare and hotels — naturally, you don't earn points on the purchases covered by that credit. When you subtract this credit from the annual fee, the card is effectively only $150 each year.

If you're not sure whether the Preferred or Reserve is the better card for you, take a look at this breakdown. Also keep in mind that you can typically only earn the sign-up bonus for one Sapphire-branded card every two years.

Couple is a new startup making engagement rings with lab-grown diamonds — here's why that's a good thing

couple engagement rings

  • The founders of Couple figured out how to make engagement-ring shopping more simple and transparent: by using lab-grown diamonds, offering a curated selection of ring styles, and selling direct to consumer.
  • The lab-grown diamonds are chemically identical to mined diamonds but don't carry the same environmental and ethical problems and are just as beautiful and durable.
  • The rings start at $5,299 for a 1-carat diamond. You can choose the precious-metal type and carat size, then add an optional personal engraving. Couple has a 60-day return or resizing policy, as well as a lifetime warranty on its rings.

Two diamonds sit in front of you — one mined, one lab-grown. Which would you choose for your partner?

If you're like any of the increasingly socially conscious shoppers out there, you'd choose the lab-grown one. Naturally, however, you might have some reservations. What are you sacrificing when you go the more environmentally and ethically friendly route?

At Couple, a new online ring company, you're never losing out: not on quality, carat size, or price. The startup makes beautiful engagement rings with lab-grown diamonds, offering couples an easier and more transparent shopping experience.

couple engagement rings 3

In 2017, Couple cofounder Jeff Brenner was shopping for an engagement ring, and like many people who start the search with high hopes, came up disappointed and empty-handed.

"I tried the traditional, big name jewelers, independent designers and even the 'friend-of-a-friend' route, and found the whole market incredibly complex and unnecessarily overwhelming," he said. "There was a clear need for a new brand to deliver a better customer experience in this industry. The 'aha moment' of just how big and exciting the opportunity was came with solving the environmental and ethical challenges of mined diamonds."

Naturally occurring diamonds are mined from deep beneath the Earth's surface, often with destructive methods that disrupt ecosystems, displace land, lead to soil erosion, and affect water quality. Diamond-rich countries suffer on the societal level, too. There, human-rights abuses, violence, and civil conflict are caused by or exacerbated by the pressures of the diamond trade.

Brenner and his cofounder Alan Shuster found a US-based lab making lab-grown diamonds identical to mined diamonds. Since they're grown above ground by engineers in the US and sold direct to consumer online, Brenner and Shuster are able to cut out traditional middlemen to offer quality diamonds for less and with a clean conscience.

couple engagement rings 4

Atomically, Couple's lab-grown diamonds are identical to mined diamonds. But they're larger on a per-price basis and meet high standards of quality (Excellent cut, G color, and VS2 clarity).

The hand-crafted rings, made in New York City by craftsmen with more than 25 years of experience, come in four styles. Each style has four precious metal choices (white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, and platinum) and three carat choices (1, 1.5, or 2). Shoppers have these elegant and timeless styles to consider:

Many of the rings can also be engraved for a truly personal touch.

Once you order your ring, you receive a box, a tray, and a care guide. The rings come with a 60-day return and resizing policy, as well as lifetime warranty.

In addition to engagement rings, Couple sells simple and beautiful wedding bands. There are eight styles, starting at $399, for women, and two styles, starting at $599, for men.

If you've been on a long, arduous search for an engagement ring that doesn't compromise your values, the hunt finally stops here. Couple is the one of the first companies in what we predict will be a string of fine-jewelry brands that want to do engagement rings better.

  • Still looking? We also have a guide for college graduation gifts for himfor her, and graduation gifts under $100.

If you're looking to make a big difference with a gift, shopping for a college student is a good place to begin. They have classes, internships, second jobs, social lives, and relationships to manage, and they probably have far less money to support themselves than they wish they did.

Useful, thoughtful gifts can make a disproportionate difference in their quality of life — especially when it's something they'll both use frequently and couldn't afford on their own.

As a recent college graduate, I can tell you from experience that the list below is a really good place to start your shopping.

Many of these items are available with two-day shipping if you have Amazon Prime, so don't stress too hard about any last-minute shopping — just remember that the sooner you order, the better your chances of a timely arrival.

I haven't worn foundation in months — these are the products that helped clear my skin

Foundation thumbnail 4_3 (1)

  • I've worn foundation regularly for six years, partly out of habit and largely because it covered up the sins of temperamental skin.
  • But I was sick of spending money and time to willfully clog my pores each day, sticking myself in an endless loop of relying on makeup.
  • Gradually, I phased in products that helped me get my skin to a healthy equilibrium and even tone. At this point, I haven't worn foundation in months — and my skin has been more consistently clear and smooth than ever.
  • Below, I detail what products I used and why. You can also find what I learned when I had a celebrity dermatologist audit my skin-care routine here.

For a pale and easily scarred teen going through their first bout of serious breakouts, foundation was a miracle — like some divine being descended from another realm and gave cavemen a lit torch in the Pleistocene epoch. You mean I can cover this up and it will still look like skin, kind of? Using it in high school helped buoy my confidence, and that alone was worth the time, expense, and (comparatively) minor protests from my skin. It was even worth avoiding hugging people wearing white lest they look like a screen print of Forrest Gump's smiley face shirt afterward.

In adulthood, though, I got more comfortable with the idea of imperfection. It no longer seemed like something to so actively avoid. But over the course of the last six years, foundation had become both a habit and a safety blanket. I was still almost unconsciously relying on it to cover up the aftermath of past breakouts, and said dependency wasn't helping other concerns like my skin texture or clogged pores.

In other words, once you start using foundation, it's hard to stop. But, about six months ago, I did. Rather than the expense or even skin clarity, it was the argument of time that finally got me to give it up. Instead of the 180 hours I would cumulatively spend every year just putting on makeup in the morning, would I perhaps be happier — both in the moment and with my priorities in general — if I could devote that time to enjoying a cup of coffee and reading a newspaper in the morning instead?

I understand that the simple decision of how you get to spend your time in the morning can be an immense luxury — especially for women, on whom the public passes judgment about appearance with all the nuance of an executioner. If someone had told me what I just told you during one of my severe breakouts, I would have felt anger and frustration at the sheer misconception and injustice of it all: you don't think I want to spend my mornings doing something else, too? Years later, though, I've been fortunate enough to age out of those breakouts, and my focus has shifted instead to the aftermath of discoloration and small flare-ups. That's why I can point to something like "time" and have the considerable privilege of that alone being enough of a reason to stop.

To transition out of wearing foundation, I began actively addressing my underlying skin concerns and building a more sustainable skin-care regime while phasing heavy makeup out. Before, my skin care had been reactionary. Now, it needed to be proactive — and tenable as well. For that, I used my collective experience as a commerce reporter, resources like renowned dermatologists, and plenty of research and self-testing to find the products that worked for me: clinical grade dark spot correctors, gentle but intense cleansers, cult-favorite clay face masks, and a prescription-strength retinoid treatment to name a few.

As of today, I haven't worn foundation for about five months — and I haven't needed or wanted to. I use a dab of my Holy Grail concealer and a brush to cover up any surprise blemishes, and I swipe on some mascara and head out the door in as little as ten minutes.

Altogether, my skin is the clearest, smoothest, and most evenly toned it's been in years. I've figured out how to maintain that actively with products, instead of more or less assuming it would always be at the whim of the universe. I've also started using skin care as makeup, rather than makeup that mimics skin care — and it looks better overall. I've added sunscreen since I used to rely on foundations to supply SPF, and, when I do wear makeup, I have more fun applying it.

Below, I run through the products I used to give up foundation and why each one works for my specific skin concerns. Skin care is notoriously subjective, and what works for me may not work for you, but they may be worth checking out if you're looking to do the same.

Below are the nine products I used to get my skin to a healthy state:

A micellar water that preps skin for face wash and respects the skin's natural barrier

Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar Water, available at Amazon and Dermstore, from $14.90

First, I wanted to get my skin to a place where going without foundation would feel comfortable — this meant at least partially addressing my main concerns, like clarity, hydration, and tone.

As I've heard echoed everywhere from the famed 10-step Korean skin-care routine to celebrity dermatologists, double-cleansing is a good idea. The first cleanser, such as a micellar water, removes the day's cream, makeup, and dirt gently, clearing the way for the next cleanser to reach deeper inside the skin and draw out sebum and bacteria.

I've tried others, but I've preferred this cult-favorite French pharmacy micellar water since discovering it while living in Paris — and I'm not the only one. The company estimates that a bottle is sold every two seconds, and it's firmly seated on Amazon's best-selling skin-care products

It's gentle enough to wipe away the day's grime without irritating my sensitive skin, and hydrating enough to make dual-cleansing viable for my dry skin. Equally important, micellar water respects the skin's hydro-lipid film (no micro-scratches working like chinks in the armor) which helps get your complexion on a sustainable, self-managed clarity track.

A non-soapy face wash that uses acids to gently exfoliate the skin

Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Alpha Beta Pore Perfecting Cleansing Gel, available at Sephora, $38

For even tone, texture, and clarity that doesn't strip the skin of moisture, I swear by Dr. Dennis Gross' Alpha Beta facial cleanser.

Simply put, it's the best cleanser I've ever used — and you'd hope it would be after it took Dr. Gross four years to perfect. It's not a foam and wasn't formulated with soap, so it doesn't leave the skin feeling uncomfortably dry or tight. But, having said that, it's also a more intense clean. It works into a rich lather, and the alpha and beta hydroxy acids work diligently (on multiple levels of the skin) to slough away dead, tired cells and facilitate healthy turnover to even tone and texture. Altogether, it's formulated to treat skin concerns while maintaining the skin's integrity and pH balance.

After using it, my skin looks brighter and tighter, and dark spots faded at a faster rate thanks to frequent exfoliation. This worked for the no-foundation project twofold: I didn't feel the need to cover up my skin's imperfections because there were fewer of them, and I didn't want to cover it up because my skin actually looked better au naturel than it did covered in foundation.

I definitely still get the occasional blemish, but the texture and overall tone of my skin is so consistently even now that I typically just dab concealer on the spot, blend it into the surrounding skin with a brush, and head out the door.

A clinical-grade dark spot correcting serum

Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Clinical Grade IPL Dark Spot Correcting Serum, available at Sephora, $92

This was the high-impact, clinical-grade serum I turned to for treating dark spots quickly and efficiently. It has 10% L-ascorbic acid (which is another way of saying concentrated vitamin C) and Kojic acid, which is great for brightening dark spots, as well as lactic acid, a gentle exfoliator.

Within a few weeks (the company notes two to eight weeks depending on severity), I noticed my skin looking brighter and its tone evening out considerably. After four, it was even enough to skip foundation. That's because the IPL exfoliates your skin in its current state and prevents any additional lower pigment from surfacing. It also helps protect skin from environmental aggressors like free radicals.
