Hudson Yards

  • 15 Hudson Yards in New York City is the first residential building to open in Hudson Yards, a new neighborhood on Manhattan's West Side set to open on March 15.
  • I took a tour of the 88-story tower and was amazed by the level of luxury it offers its residents.
  • The building offers 40,000 square feet for amenities including a 75-foot pool, a private spa and yoga studio, a children's "imagination center," and wine cellars available to buy for up to $200,000.
  • More than 60% of the condos have been sold, a publicist said, but those remaining range from $3.9 million for a two-bedroom to $32 million for a duplex penthouse.

On a recent winter afternoon, I visited 15 Hudson Yards, an 88-story superluxury tower in New York City. It's the first residential building to open in Hudson Yards, a new neighborhood on Manhattan's West Side.

At $25 billion, Hudson Yards is the most expensive real-estate development in US history.

On my tour of 15 Hudson Yards, which was designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Rockwell Group, I got a sneak peek of a model unit and the building's 40,000 square feet for amenities on the 50th and 51st floors, including club rooms, a private screening room, a fitness center, a 75-foot pool, a yoga studio and private spa, and wine cellars available to buy for $25,000 to $200,000.

Remaining condos start at $3.9 million for a two-bedroom and go up to $32 million for a duplex penthouse, 88B.

I was blown away by the amenities and the ultraluxurious lifestyle that 15 Hudson Yards selling to residents. Here's what it looked like.

The best robot vacuums you can buy

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

best robot vacuum

  • Vacuuming is a real pain, but robot vacuum cleaners can suck up the dust for you.
  • Of all the robot vacuum cleaners we tried, the iRobot Roomba 690 proved to be the best for most people with its easy-to-use app, smart features, great suction, and affordable price.

Nobody likes household chores, but they have to be done. Unfortunately, we don't live like the Jetsons yet, but you can get capable robot vacuum cleaners to take care of the dust and dirt for you. Robot vacuums can't completely replace manual cleaning, but they can help cut down on the amount of time you spend waging war on dust bunnies.

Robot vacuums work best in smaller homes and normal-sized apartments between 800 and 1,200 square feet. They handle hard floors and short carpets best, though they can get stuck now and then. Robot vacuums need a good motor for powerful suction, decent battery life, a brush roll, and enough smarts to be self-sufficient. Many robot vacuums work with apps on your phone and some will even run when you tell them to with voice commands if you have Amazon's Alexa at home.

You can get robot vacuums for as little as $220, but the high-end models run up to $1,000 or more. We tested out a number of highly reviewed robot vacuums that run the gamut from $220 to $1,100. We also included a $170 robot mop and duster in our guide because it's a great vacuum alternative for basic cleaning.

Here are the best robot vacuums you can buy:

Updated on 02/25/2019 by Kylie Joyner: Based on testing, we added the Neato Botvac D7 Connected. We removed a few older vacuums. Also updated prices and formatting.

Read on in the slides below to check out our top picks.

SEE ALSO: The best vacuums you can buy for less than $300

Best robot vacuum overall

Why you'll love it: The iRobot Roomba 690 sucks up dirt and debris, responds to voice commands, and costs less than high-end bots.

You don't have to spend a fortune to own a robot vacuum cleaner, but you don't have to go with a low-powered one, either. The iRobot Roomba 690 sits right in the middle of the road, making it the best robot vacuum for most people. It has strong suction and smart features like voice control that put it above most budget vacuums. It's an even better deal now, coming in at $300.

iRobot's three-stage cleaning system loosens dirt and debris so it's easy to suck up. The vacuum has a spinning side brush, which is very effective. Setup is easy and the companion app is excellent. You even get introductory videos with tips to help you get started. It's so easy to use that we had our bot up and running in about 10 minutes.

The Roomba 690 can clean carpet, rugs, tile, hardwood, and laminate floors without any problems. It navigates around obstacles like furniture, clutter, and other objects. You can also set up barriers, so your bot doesn't clean the wrong room or stumble onto your thick shag carpet and stop running. We created a barrier between our hardwood and tile floors so we could separate the rooms better.

We tested out the iRobot Roomba 690 and came away very impressed. It picked up dirt, dust, cat and human hair, cat litter, crumbs, and just about everything else we threw at it. It wasn't quite as powerful as the $700+ robot vacuums we tested, and it did get stuck on a stray shoelace, but overall, it impressed us, and we think it offers the best bang for your buck.

Since it's a smart vacuum that's Wi-Fi-enabled, you can set a schedule for it to clean during specific times and more in the companion app. You can even control it with your voice using Amazon's Alexa or the Google Assistant. We tried it a few times, and it really felt like living in the future.

The Roomba 690 runs for 60 minutes and returns to its base for charging as soon as it runs out of juice. It's funny to see your robot amble its way home without any assistance. The robot vacuum played nice with our cat, too, so have no fear that your Roomba will run over your pets. If anything, be worried that your cat may pounce on your Roomba. — Malarie Gokey

Pros: Affordable for a smart robot vacuum, voice control, app-controlled, can be programmed

Cons: Not as powerful as high-end models, doesn't clean the whole house in one go like the 960

Buy the iRobot Roomba 690 on Amazon for $299.99 (originally $374.99)

The best robot vacuum for less than $250

Why you'll love it: For just $220, the Eufy RoboVac 11S is significantly cheaper than every other robot vacuum we tested, but it's just as good at cleaning.

Who says you have to pay an arm and a leg to robotically clean your home? Certainly not the startup Eufy, which launched its budget-friendly RoboVac line last year. We tried the 11 and we loved it, but the startup's latest robot vacuum, the Eufy 11S, is our new budget pick because it has a slimmer profile that fits in tighter spaces, a slightly longer runtime, and improved features.

Most importantly, the 11S will help you do your chores, so you can save time and money. Because it only costs $220, we called it the smartest investment you'll make all year in our full review.

While the 11S is smaller than previous RoboVac models, the 11S boasts a larger dustbin to collect more dirt, and 30% stronger suction to clean floors even more efficiently. Although the 11S is only 2.85-inches tall, its diminutive size allows it to sneak under bed frames, cabinets, and other tight spaces without getting stuck. It navigated across hardwood, tile, and carpet effortlessly.

The 11S gets 100 minutes of battery life while cleaning, and its suction has also been upgraded, so it is better equipped to pick up dirt and debris from your carpets or cracks in your floor.

One of the RoboVac 11S' most notable strengths is that it has several modes. Spot mode, for instance, will focus on cleaning a small, specific area for two minutes, while Single Room mode will start a 30-minute cleaning session in a certain space.

The RoboVac's remote also lets you set up a schedule, so you can start your vacuum before you go to work, and return home to spotless floors.

Overall, the vacuum maneuvers pretty gracefully around furniture and molding, and picks up all the dust, hair, and everything else that amasses in a home with ease. Sure, you may be horrified when you empty the dustbin every couple of days to see just how much stuff is collecting on your floor, but hey, it beats dealing with it on your own. And with a price tag this low, it won’t feel like a robotic vacuum is a luxury, but rather a necessity.

It may not have all the smart features like app or voice control, but it cleans just as well as our top pick and costs almost $200 less. The only reason it wasn't our top pick is that it is lacking smart features like voice and app control, and we're nerdy enough to wish for those features. However, if those things don't matter to you, it's an excellent deal. — Lulu Chang and Malarie Gokey

Pros: Extremely affordable without sacrificing key functionality, low profile allows the vacuum to get into small spaces

Cons: No voice control or connectivity

The best robot vacuum for $350

Why you'll love it: The Deebot 711 is the latest robotic vacuum from Ecovacs, and with its Smart Navi Mapping Technology and 110-minute battery life, this may just be one of the most effective robots on the market.

The Ecovacs family of vacuums has long been a shopper and Business Insider favorite. They’re some of the best-selling robovacs on Amazon, and back in June, we just couldn’t get enough of the Ecovacs Deebot 900. But now, the team has come out with yet another iteration of its popular cleaning assistant, and this one — the Deebot 711— is $50 cheaper and just as effective. Plus, it has nearly two hours of battery life, which makes it an excellent candidate for even the dirtiest floors.

What I’ve been most impressed by in my few weeks with the new Deebot is its ability to map my home and quickly learn which areas are most in need of cleaning. That’s thanks to the robot’s Smart Navi Mapping Technology, which not only helps it adapt to any environment with ease, but also helps it to avoid bumping into furniture or avoid falling down stairs.

The Smart Navi Mapping Technology is capable of creating an optimized and systematic cleaning path that covers up to 1,300 square feet, which makes it more than enough for at least one floor of your home — if not your whole home.

Thanks to the Deebot’s compatibility with both Alexa and Google Assistant, you can begin cleaning simply by telling the robot to do so. Either use a voice command or download the companion smartphone app to start the cleaning process, and you’ll be able to spend your time doing more important things.

Of course, if you’d like to exercise a bit more control over the cleaning process, you can use the app to direct the robot, or schedule a cleaning. You can also ask for status updates while you’re away so that you know exactly what the Deebot has and hasn’t done.

The Deebot 711 features a maximum power suction mode, which doubles the suction power of the machine and helps it take care of tough stains like dirt and grime on either hardwood or carpeted floors. Plus, the Deebot features two specialized cleaning modes — edge and spot mode — which allow you (by proxy, that is) to tackle hard to reach and often-missed areas of the room. — Lulu Chang

Pros: Smart mapping, voice commands, easy to use, cleans well, decent price

Cons: Not as precise as a Roomba

9 lucrative credit card deals new cardholders can get in February 2019 — including a 100k-point Marriott Bonvoy offer

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider and The Points Guy Affiliate Network receive a commission from card issuers if you apply through these links and are approved.

best credit card sign-up offers, January 2019

Earning credit card rewards on your everyday spending is easy, but if you're looking to earn a lot of points quickly — whether you're planning a big trip, or you're just looking to build up your reserves — the best way is to earn new member bonuses by opening cards.

Credit card issuers like Chase and AmEx offer huge bonuses to attract customers, and while each card may have different eligibility requirements, you can usually get the bonus as long as you haven't had that card before — or in some cases, if you haven't had it in the past few years.

With brand-new, limited-time offers available, along with some reliable standbys, there's plenty available this month.

You can read more about earning new card member bonuses and how that will affect your credit score here, or scroll down to find some of the best offers available in February 2019.

Keep in mind that we're focusing on the rewards and perks that make these cards great options, not things like interest rates and late fees, which can far outweigh the value of any rewards.

When you're working to earn credit card rewards, it's important to practice financial discipline, like paying your balances off in full each month, making payments on time, and not spending more than you can afford to pay back. Basically, treat your credit card like a debit card.

1. Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express Card

Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card_Card Art

Welcome bonus: 100,000 Marriott Bonvoy points (after spending $5,000 in the first three months). Offer ends April 24.

This month, Marriott wraps up a major rebranding of its loyalty program, combining it with the Starwood Preferred Guest program to create a single entity: Marriott Bonvoy.

The various terms and benefits of the program are virtually unchanged from what took effect in August, when the two separate programs were brought under a new, single set of benefits.

The biggest changes under this month's rebrand come to the Bonvoy's rewards credit cards, which are issued by American Express and Chase.

To mark the occasion, AmEx is offering a big, limited-time promotion on the personal card it issues, the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express Card— formerly called the SPG Luxury Card.

Until April 24, new cardholders can earn 100,000 Marriott Bonvoy points when they spend $5,000 on the card in the first three months.

While the card has a high $450 annual fee, its easy to get much more value from it than you pay for that fee — especially if you stay at Marriott hotels semi-frequently.

Right off the bat, the card offers up to $300 each year in statement credits for purchases at Starwood and Marriott hotels, which can apply to room charges. That effectively brings the fee down to just $150.

It also offers a free night award each year on your cardmember anniversary, which can be redeemed at any hotel that costs 50,000 points per night or less. The card also offers complimentary Gold elite status, and comes with a Priority Pass Select airport lounge membership.

The card earns 6x points at Marriott hotels, 3x points at US restaurants and on flights booked directly with the airline, and 2x points on everything else.

2. United Explorer Business Card

Sign-up bonus: 75,000 miles (after spending $5,000 in the first three months). Offer ends March 18.

Following a limited-time offer on their co-branded personal card, United Airlines and Chase have launched an even better promotion on their small business card.

The card offers a free checked bag when you use your card to purchase your tickets, priority boarding as long as you have the open card attached to your MileagePlus account, and more.

The United Explorer Business also has two benefits that are unique among US airline credit cards in the same class. First, you'll get two complimentary United Club lounge passes each year. In the lounges, you can enjoy comfortable seating, Wi-Fi, free food and drinks, and more before your flight. Normally, one-time entry to a United Club would cost $59 if you didn't have a membership.

Second, although this is an unpublished benefit, United cardholders also get access to more saver award space than other United members — that makes it easier to find good flights when it's time to use your miles..

The card has a $95 annual fee, which is waived the first year. You'll earn 2x miles on every dollar spent at restaurants, gas stations, office supply stores, and on United purchases, and 1x mile per dollar on everything else.

3. Platinum Card® from American Express

Amex Platinum card

Welcome Offer: 60,000 points (after spending $5,000 in the first three months).

The American Express Platinum card has one of the highest annual fees of any consumer credit or charge card — $550 — but as AmEx's flagship product, this premium credit card offers a tremendous amount of value to offset that fee. For example, I got more than $2,000 worth of value in my first year with the card.

The card earns Membership Rewards points, the currency in AmEx's loyalty program, which can be exchanged for statement credits or cash back, used to book travel through AmEx's travel website, or, to get the most value, transferred to any of 17 airline and three hotel transfer partners (transferable points are among the best). Travel website The Points Guy lists a valuation of 2¢ per Membership Rewards point; based on that, the welcome offer is worth around $1,200.

The Platinum Card earns an incredible 5x points on airfare purchased directly from the airline, and offers an airline fee credit of up to $200 each calendar year, and up to $200 in Uber credits each card member year. It also grants the cardholder access to more than 1,200 airport lounges around the world, including Delta Sky Clubs and AmEx's own Centurion Lounges. Other benefits include automatic gold elite status at Starwood, Marriott, and Hilton hotels, a statement credit up to $100 to cover enrollment in Global Entry/TSA PreCheck, concierge service, and much more.

If you're an active military servicemember, you can get the AmEx Platinum Card's fee waived.

4. Wells Fargo Propel American Express® Card

wells fargo propel credit card lifestyle 22

Welcome offer: 30,000 Go Far points (after spending $3,000 in the first three months).

Thiscard from Wells Fargo has one of the more attractive rewards offerings you'll find from a no-annual-fee card. The current Propel card is actually a re-launch of an old product — Wells Fargo stopped accepting applications for the old card a year ago, before announcing the new product and reopening applications this summer.

The card earns 3x points on all travel, dining, and select streaming services (and 1x point on everything else). If that sounds familiar, it's because it's almost the same as the popular Chase Sapphire Reserve.

There are some key differences between the cards. The Propel lets you redeem points for 1¢ each toward cash back, merchandise, travel, or more, while the Sapphire Reserve offers a range of more valuable redemption options — it's easy to get at least 50% more value for Chase points. Plus, the Sapphire Reserve offers a number of premium perks that the Propel doesn't, like airport lounge access, a $300 annual travel credit travel delay insurance, and more.

Of course, the Sapphire Reserve also comes with a $450 annual fee, while the Wells Fargo Propel doesn't have a fee. Between the new member offer, and the solid earning rate on popular spend categories, the Propel makes a decent option for those who don't travel often, or who aren't comfortable floating a large annual fee.

We named the Propel the best no-fee card of 2018.

5. Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card

Sign-up bonus: $500 (after spending $3,000 in the first three months).

If dining and cooking are your thing, and cash back is what you're after, the Capital One Savor is sure to please.

The card earns unlimited 4% cash back on all dining and entertainment, 2% back at grocery stores, and 1% on everything else. Plus, the card offers a whopping $500 sign-up bonus when you spend $3,000 in the first three months.

The Savor carries a lower annual fee than the AmEx Gold — $95, waived the first year. The earning rate will make up for the fee in many cases, based on normal spending, but if that's too high for you, there's an alternative: the Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card.

The SavorOne card has no annual fee, and offers a slightly lower — but still valuable — earning rate of 3% cash back on dining and entertainment, 2% back at grocery stores, and 1% on everything else. It offers a lower sign-up bonus of $150 when you spend $500 in the first three months.

6. Chase Sapphire Preferred

NY City Cards chase sapphire preferred 9

Sign-up bonus: 50,000 points (after spending $4,000 in the first three months).

The Sapphire Preferred is one of the most popular all-around rewards credit cards, and it's easy to see why. This card earns 2x points per dollar spent on just about all travel and dining purchases, and 1x point on everything else. It also comes with a ton of travel and purchase protections, such as rental car insurance, trip delay coverage, and extended warranty.

The sign-up bonus — 50,000 UR points — is worth, at the very least, $500 as cash back or gift cards. However, if you book travel through the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal and use points to pay, you'll get a 25% bonus, making points worth 1.25 cents each. That means that the sign-up bonus would be worth $625.

Even more lucrative — the Chase Sapphire Preferred lets you transfer your UR points to a few different frequent flyer and hotel loyalty programs. This comes in handy because, in many cases, it costs fewer points to book a trip if you go through one of those programs, as opposed to using the points as cash. You can read more about why transferring points to frequent flyer programs gets you more value here.

This all comes for a fairly standard annual fee of $95, which is waived the first year.

Click here to learn more about the Sapphire Preferred from Insider Picks' partner: The Points Guy.

7. Chase Sapphire Reserve

Sign-up bonus: 50,000 points (after spending $4,000 in the first three months).

The Sapphire Reserve is basically a beefier version of the Preferred. While the card comes with the same sign-up bonus, it earns points on everyday spending faster, nabbing a higher 3x points per dollar spent on travel and dining purchases, and 1x on everything else. It also offers similar, though in many cases, enhanced travel and purchase protections.

Unlike the Preferred, the Sapphire Reserve comes with a Priority Pass Select membership, which gets you and any travel companions free access to more than 1,000 airport lounges around the world.

You can use points from the Reserve the same ways as with the Preferred, except that you'll get a 50% bonus when booking travel through Chase, making your points worth 1.5¢ each.

The card carries a higher annual fee than the Preferred: $450. However, it also comes with a $300 travel credit each card member year. Each year, you'll get statement credits for the first $300 in travel-related purchases you make, including things like subway fare, taxis, parking, and tolls, as well as airfare and hotels — naturally, you don't earn points on the purchases covered by that credit. When you subtract this credit from the annual fee, the card is effectively only $150 each year.

If you're not sure whether the Preferred or Reserve is the better card for you, take a look at this breakdown. Also keep in mind that you can typically only earn the sign-up bonus for one Sapphire-branded card every two years.

Click here to learn more about the Sapphire Reserve from Insider Picks' partner: The Points Guy.

8. Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card

Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card

Welcome offer: 150,000 Hilton Honors points when you spend $4,000 in the first three months.

The premium Hilton Honors American Express Aspire card has a hefty $450 annual fee, but it comes with so many perks, benefits, and rebates that it's more than worth paying for Hilton loyalists — or even brand-agnostic hotel guests.

In addition to an airline fee credit up to $250 per calendar year and up to a $250 Hilton resort statement credit each card member year, the Aspire also offers up to a $100 Hilton on-property credit every time you book a stay of two nights or longer at a luxury Hilton property — you just need to book through a specific website for cardholders.

The card also offers a free weekend night reward each year — regardless of how much you spend — and a second if you spend $60,000 on the card in a calendar year. It also comes with complimentary Diamond status.

The Aspire earns a tremendous 14x points per dollar spent with Hilton, 7x points on flights booked with the airline, car rentals, and at US restaurants, and 3x points on everything else.

Click here to learn more about the Hilton Honors Aspire card from Insider Picks' partner The Points Guy.

9. Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

Sign-up bonus: 50,000 miles (after spending $3,000 in the first three months).

The Capital One Venture has historically been a useful card, thanks to a solid earning rate of 2x miles on everything, even though the rewards program was just...fine. Unlike cards offered by competitors, miles had a fixed value of 1¢ each toward travel purchases. Generally, transferable credit card points— those that you can transfer to an airline frequent flyer program, should you choose — are more valuable, thanks to the way that booking frequent flyer award tickets works. You can read more about that here.

However, Capital One has announced that as of December 10, Venture cardholders will be able to transfer miles to 14 new airline partners, significantly increasing the potential value of each mile.

Capital One had a month-long promotional sign-up bonus (up to 75,000 miles) when it first made the announcement. Although the bonus has returned to its normal amount — 50,000 miles when you spend $3,000 in the first three months — it's still a solid value worth pursuing.

The Capital One Venture earns miles at a rate of 2x per dollar spent on all purchases, and an incredible 10x points per dollar spent on hotel stays when you book and pay through Hotels.com/Venture. Hotels.com has its own loyalty program that rewards you with a free night after 10 paid nights, so that equates to a staggering 20% return on hotels.

Between the ability to transfer miles to airlines, and the chance to earn up to 10x miles on hotels, this is one of the best cards available right now.

The card also offers a credit of up to $100 to enroll in TSA PreCheck or Global Entry. It has a $95 annual fee, which is waived the first year.

According to the NRDC, America doesn't end up eating about 40% of its food. That's a lot when looked at as a hard number, but probably comes as less of a shock after the fourth week in a row that you've thrown out soggy, black lettuce from the back of the refrigerator.

The good-ish news is that because we waste about 50% more food today than we did in 1970, it should be relatively easy to cut back on it (especially with the innovations of the last 45+ years) if we just devote a bit more effort to it. Or, if we just bought smarter products that do some of the magical life-lengthening preservation for us.

In turn, we'll save resources, refrigerator space, and more money for other things we enjoy.

It could be as simple as a weekly "use it up" dinner, where you try to concoct a delicious Instant Pot meal of your leftovers from the week, or as low-maintenance as getting an inexpensive device to suck up the ethylene gas (which causes ripening) in your fruit and veggie drawer. It all depends on your lifestyle, budget, and what you find yourself most often wasting.

Below are 18 kitchen tools and tricks to cut down on food waste:

ipad pro iphone 6s

  • You can print from an iPhone or iPad with just a few taps if you have a printer with AirPrint capabilities.
  • Even printers without AirPrint can typically be synched wirelessly to an iPad or iPhone, but you might need to get an app to help out.
  • With a single piece of additional hardware, you can still easily print from your phone or tablet with a printer that's offline or never had wireless capabilities in the first place.

While the need for printouts grows less and less pertinent with each passing day, there are still times when you'll need to print an actual hard copy of a file.

And be it a picture you'd like to frame and hang on the wall or legal document you need to sign and send on its way, if you have said file on your iPhone or iPad, printing it can be blissfully easy.

First, let's talk through the steps of printing from a phone using AirPrint.

Most current printers with wireless capabilities have the AirPrint feature, which allows the printer to easily sync up with an iPad or iPhone. (And you can get a perfectly decent printer with the feature at a reasonable price, for what it's worth.)

Once you have the document, image, or webpage you wish to print isolated, just follow these easy steps to print it out.

printer 4

  1. Locate and hit the "Share" button, which is the square with an arrow aiming upward out of its center.

    printer 3
  2. On the bottom bar of icons, the gray images set over white squares, swipe left until you see image of a printer over the word "Print."

    printer 5
  3. Tap "Print," and on the next screen, locate the nearby printer you wish to use by name (assuming there is more than one option; otherwise the only available printer will simply be the choice) and hit the word "Print" written in blue at the top right corner of the screen.

Printing from an iPad or iPhone without AirPrint

Not all printers have the AirPrint feature, especially if they are a bit older. But if they have a wireless capability, you should still be able to print from it wirelessly. All you need to do is first download the app associated with your particular printer, which should be free and easy to find in the App Store on your iPhone or iPad.

  1. Open the printer's app on your phone or tablet.
  2. Turn on your printer's WiFi.
  3. Go into your phone or tablet's "Settings" and hit the WiFi tab.
  4. Locate your printer under "CHOOSE A NETWORK..." and tap on it.
  5. Pull up the document, image, or webpage you want to print, then hit the "Share" icon.
  6. You should now be able to connect the printer through the app and print.

How to print from a phone or tablet without wireless connection

The easiest way to print from an iPhone or iPad using a printer that can't connect wirelessly is to use a piece of hardware as the go between.

Get a USB flash drive with OTG (On the Go) capabilities and a Apple lighting adapter and you'll be good to go; just plug the device into your phone, drop the files to be printed onto it, then connect it to your printed via the USB connector.

best stain remover

  • Laundry is a necessary chore that is much more difficult when tough stains are involved.
  • We tested several stain removers to see which ones did the best job with tough stains.
  • OxiClean Versatile Stain Remover is our top pick because it is safe to use on all white and color clothes, delivers excellent stain removal, and is gentle on fabrics.

Laundry isn't usually on the top of our list of fun activities and no one wants to have to rewash things that don't come clean the first time. The start of a successful laundry routine happens when you choose the right detergent, but even the best of the best detergent can't remove every stain. That's why we need to keep stain removers on hand.

I've been testing products for companies, agencies, and publications for many years as a laundry and housekeeping professional. When it comes to laundry stain removers, I am always looking for ones that are simple to use and produce the best results.

Unfortunately, there is not a single product that can remove every stain on every fabric. Some stains, like Sharpie permanent ink, are simply impossible to remove. But, after testing and reviewing dozens of brands, I can recommend that you keep these five stain removers on hand. You'll be glad you have them on laundry day.

Here are the best stain removers you can buy:

Read on in the slides below to check out our top picks.

The best laundry stain remover overall

Why you'll love it: If you are looking for a reasonably-priced, effective stain remover that removes heavy mud, grass, and food stains and can be safely used for all washable fabrics, OxiClean Versatile Stain Remover is the best.

The reason I have named OxiClean Versatile Stain Removeras the best overall stain remover is that it is not only a stain remover, it also whitens and brightens fabrics and boosts the performance of any brand of detergent.

Since OxiClean is a gentle, slow-acting, oxygen-based bleach, the key to successful use as a stain remover is mixing the powdered solution correctly and having a bit of patience.

Follow the instructions on the package for the correct amount of powder to use per gallon of water for a presoak solution to get best results. Also, be sure that all of the powder is dissolved completely before adding the fabric. You'll have better results if the stained items are allowed to soak for at least an hour or even overnight before washing as usual.

On Walgreens' site, OxiClean scores 4.4 stars out of five. Reviewer Newf65 says, "I’ve been using this product for stain removal for a year or more now and find it’s the best I’ve used with no chlorine added."

While close to a perfect cleaner, OxiClean is not a miracle formula for every type of stain. It won't remove oily stains (the next product will!), dried oil paint, or chlorine bleach damage.

Pros:  Safe to use on all washable fabrics, readily available in mass-market stores and online, available in a dye and scent-free formula, can be mixed in small batches or used for an entire laundry load (11 cents per load)

Cons: Does not remove heavy oil stains, slow-acting product requires time to presoak fabrics with set-in stains

Buy OxiClean Versatile Stain Remover at Walmart in a 3-pound tub for $7.92

Buy OxiClean Versatile Stain Remover on Amazon in a 3-pound tub for $7.71 (currently out of stock)

The best laundry stain remover on a budget

Why you'll love it: Fels Naptha is a laundry soap bar that costs just fractions of a penny per use but removes oily stains with a single swipe.

You'll find that the old-fashioned Fels Naptha Laundry Soap Bar can do some pretty amazing things even though it has been around since 1893. The formula and ownership of the brand have changed but its stain removal performance is still great.

It is most effective as a stain remover for oil-based messes like make-up, butter, cooking oil, chocolate, and body oil on collars and cuffs. Simply wet the fabric and rub the stain with the bar of soap. Then, let Fels Naptha do its work for about five minutes before washing in the hottest water recommended on the garment label.

There are even extra bonuses. Fels Naptha is great for removing poison ivy resin from clothes and shoes that have been exposed, and it can be grated to become an effective ingredient in homemade detergents.

Since it was originally sold in general stores, a look at reviews on Ace Hardware's site reveals that the majority of the 172 reviews are four or five stars. As CollarMan writes, "I bought this to help clean some shirt collars ... Product worked as advertised on my collar stains."

Pros: Very low cost, easy-to-use, effective in removing oil-based stains from washable fabrics

Cons: Can be difficult to find in some mass-market stores

Buy Fels Naptha Laundry Soap Bar (5.0 ounce) on Amazon for $1.95

The best laundry stain remover for the environment

Why you'll love it:  Environmentally-safe Earth Friendly Stain and Odor Remover Spray contains no dyes to irritate skin and removes tough stains and odors without harsh chemicals.

It's a good feeling when you find a product that is good for the environment and is also a top performer. Earth Friendly Stain and Odor Remover Spray is just that type of product. Made with plant-based enzymes and other ingredients, it is safe to use around children and pets and removes all types of stains and organic odors.

While I tested as a laundry stain remover, I can also say that it works great on upholstery and carpet as well. As one reviewer on Amazon shared, "Bought it for pet odors. Learned that it wipes out under-arm odor from my garments."

Simply spray the formula on the stained area and wait about five minutes before rubbing it in lightly and then washing the fabric as usual.

Earth Friendly Products is in the process of rebranding all of its products to the ECOS label. The product formulas are exactly the same, just a new, fresh look to the packaging and a trendy name.

Pros: Plant and mineral-based ingredients are environmentally-friendly, never tested on animals, stain remover works well to remove all types of stains and organic odors

Cons: Not readily available in every mass-market store, the product is rebranding to the ECOS name and may be out-of-stock during the transition

Buy Earth Friendly Stain and Odor Spray at Walmart in a 22-ounce bottle for $2.28

The dangerous measles outbreak near Portland, Oregon, is what happens when people refuse to vaccinate their kids

measles vaccines 1963

  • Officials in Clark County, Washington — across the river from Portland, Oregon — have declared an emergency after identifying at least 65 cases of measles, most of which are in kids who aren't vaccinated.
  • The state has spent more than $1 million battling the outbreak, which began in January.
  • Before the US developed a measles vaccine, in 1963, the contagious infection was a common childhood illness. Hundreds of children died every year, and millions more had symptoms.
  • As vaccination rates plummet in the US, officials are worried that outbreaks like the one near Portland will become increasingly common.

It's a public-health emergency and it's spreading fast: At least 65 kids and young adults are sick with the measles in an area of Washington state just north of Portland, Oregon.

On January 22 the public-health department of Clark County, Washington, announced that at least 23 people were sick with the viral illness, which incubates for a week or two before prompting fevers, coughing, runny noses, and little red bumps that break out on the face and body.

Two days later the number of confirmed measles cases had risen to 25. A day later, the number rose to 30 confirmed cases. To date, at least 65 people have fallen sick with the measles in Clark County, in an outbreak that's now costing Washington more than $1 million.

The illness can be deadly.

Forty-seven of the sick people are age 10 or under, and so far the public-health department has confirmed that 57 of the 65 didn't get their measles vaccine. One person was hospitalized but has since recovered.

Even though the vast majority of cases are in unvaccinated kids, at least two people who had received a single dose of the measles vaccine got sick, too. It's a harsh reminder that the vaccine is not perfect. Still, a full course of two doses is about 97% effective at stopping the measles, while that single dose is 93% effective.

The sickness is spreading beyond county lines. One man in his 50s who said he'd been in Clark County took measles home with him to King County, Washington. He's since recovered, but county health experts are still worried.

"Measles is a highly contagious disease, and if you don't have immunity you can get it just by being in a room where a person with measles has been," Dr. Jeff Duchin, a health officer for Public Health in Seattle and King County, wrote in a blog post detailing locations where the man had been when he was infected.

The outbreak is not confined to Washington state. Across state lines, in Oregon, a resident of Multnomah County, the Portland metro area, has also contracted the measles, the Oregon Health Authority confirmed Wednesday. Two infected, unvaccinated kids recently traveled from Washington to Hawaii, but they were quickly quarantined and have since left the Big Island, The Oregonian reported. Two more of the people who contracted the measles in Clark County have since moved to Georgia, where vaccination rates are higher.

This is exactly the kind of scenario public-health experts have been warning about. In 2018, the World Health Organization said measles cases had surged by 30% around the globe, with some of the biggest hikes in places like the US and Europe, where more parents are opting not to give their kids recommended shots like MMR (protecting against measles, mumps, and rubella).

"This is something I've predicted for a while now," Peter Hotez, the dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, told The Washington Post. "It's really awful and really tragic and totally preventable."

A perfectly good and safe measles vaccine

measles vaccine in iraq

The measles vaccine was developed in the US in 1963. Before then, measles was a common childhood ailment that would kill 400 to 500 people every year in the US and sicken 3 million to 4 million others. As more kids got shots and oral doses of the vaccine in the decades after 1963, measles rates plummeted.

In 2000, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said measles was effectively eliminated in the US because the virus was not being transmitted year-round anymore and there were fewer than 100 cases a year. But increasingly kids in the US are now going without their shots.

an abandoned measles ward

Outbreaks in the US have more become common where unvaccinated people cluster and parents sometimes forgo shots for religious or personal reasons. There was one in the Orthodox Jewish community in Brooklyn last year and in Amish communities in Ohio in 2014.

Other parents mistakenly believe that there's a link between autism and the measles vaccine. This is chiefly because of discredited research by the scientist Andrew Wakefield. His main paper on the subject has been retracted, and many other studies since then have found no link between autism and vaccines. But the spread of misinformation and anti-vaccine campaigns (like those that targeted a Somali-American community in Minnesota) have led to more frequent outbreaks.

A 2018 report on the state of the US "social movement" not to vaccinate children found that Portland was one of the more dangerous "hotspots" where people weren't vaccinating their kids despite doctor recommendations. (Other spots of concern included Seattle, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Houston, and Detroit.)

"Without urgent efforts to increase vaccination coverage and identify populations with unacceptable levels of under- or unimmunized children, we risk losing decades of progress in protecting children and communities against this devastating, but entirely preventable disease," Soumya Swaminathan, a deputy director general at the WHO, said in a recent statement.

2014 and 2018 were both banner years for measles in the US, with 667 and 349 confirmed cases.

What a measles infection looks like

child with measles CDC

There's really no way to prevent someone from getting the measles other than a vaccine. The virus can easily spread when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or breathes on others.

It takes one to two weeks after the infection for measles symptoms — which can include, fever, cough, runny nose, and watery eyes — to show up in a kid.

Often, parents notice white spots, called Koplik spots, appearing in an infected child's mouth about two to three days after the onset of symptoms. After a few more days, a rash breaks out, and flat red spots that may first appear on the face can cover the child from head to toe, developing into raised bumps.

With any luck, the rash and fever persist for only a few days before the child gets well again.

But deadly measles complications affect about one in every 1,000 people with measles. These can include pneumonia, encephalitis (brain swelling), and a rare disease called subacute sclerosing panencephalitis that doesn't show up until seven to 10 years after a person has had the measles.

Before 1963, about 4,000 Americans developed brain swelling from measles every year. The encephalitis, when it didn't kill them, sometimes left people deaf or with brain damage.

This story was originally published on January 23 and has been updated with the latest counts of measles cases.

The 157-acre plot of land on a Beverly Hills hilltop originally listed for $1 billion just got a massive price cut — but it's still the most expensive listing in LA

mountain of beverly hills

  • The Mountain, a 157-acre property at the highest peak in Beverly Hills, just got a massive $350 million price chop, bringing its asking price down from $1 billion to $650 million.
  • The property is big enough to fit the Disneylandand Disney California Adventure theme parks, with 1.5 million square feet of lots ready to be built upon.
  • The buyer is likely to be a billionaire who wants to build their own compound, the listing agent said in a news release.
  • Despite the huge price cut, the property is still the most expensive listing in LA, The Real Deal reports.

Up for sale: a 157-acre mountain at the highest peak in Beverly Hills towering over Los Angeles. And now, it could be yours for a whopping $350 million discount, The Real Deal reports.

Originally listed for $1 billion, the property now boasts a significantly diminished — but still, of course, significant — $650 million price tag.

Expensive real estate may come as no surprise in the famous 90210 ZIP code. The original $1 billion asking price set the record for Los Angeles' most expensive listing ever, the Los Angeles Times reports, and no one in the world is publicly known to have paid that much for personal property, according to The New York Times. Even with the price cut, the property is still the most expensive listing in LA.

But the land itself is impressive. Located off Benedict Canyon, "The Mountain," as it's called, is big enough to fit the Disneyland and Disney California Adventure theme parks. Sold as one plot, it comprises 17 parcels of land, with 1.5 million square feet of lots zoned and ready to be built upon.

A news release from the public-relations firm The Society Group says estates and lots of this size are a rarity in Los Angeles.

But, as is common in Los Angeles, the property has an intriguing history, having passed through many famous and wealthy hands. According to the Los Angeles Times, it was once owned by an Iranian princess, the talk-show host and TV producer Merv Griffin, and a nutrition mogul, all of whom held the land but never built anything on it.

Who will soon be added to the list?

"Our likely buyer for this property is an individual who wants to build his or her own compound," Aaron Kirman of Pacific Union, the listing agent, said in the news release.

While Kirman has already shown the property to a few billionaires — one who conceptualized it as a "Huntington Garden-style oasis," he told the Los Angeles Times — he intends to use his estimated marketing budget of $400,000 to $1 million or more to fly around the world in search of more prospective buyers.

"There are 2,800 billionaires in the world," Kirman told the Los Angeles Times. "We realized there are 100 of those that could and would want to buy the property."

At 157 acres, the plot is "the size of a small city" that can fit all of Disneyland and still have 72 acres left. It's the largest property and the highest point in all of Los Angeles, Ronald Richards of Secured Capital Partners, the current owner, said in the news release. As of February 21, the price of the lot was slashed from $1 billion down to $650 million.

Source: The Real Deal

The buyer will be able to build up to 1.5 million square feet of buildings across 17 parcels of land, with the nearest neighbor half a mile away. That's enough room for a "soccer field, amphitheater, helipad, and polo field side by side," the news release says.

They'll also be able to build up to 53 feet high, which is 12 feet higher than usual in Los Angeles. That's all the more height to soak in the endless views of Los Angeles, Orange County, Catalina Island, and Santa Monica (when it's not trapped in smog). The plot is so elevated that no neighboring trees obstruct the preserved view.

How to change the activity goals on your Apple Watch

apple watch activity goals

  • Apple Watch has three rings that measure your activity: Move, Exercise, and Stand.
  • You can only change the Move goal; the Exercise and Stand goals are fixed.
  • Apple Watch sends notifications to help you close your rings, and you can edit which notifications you receive on the iPhone Watch app.

The activity tracking capabilities were one of the main reasons I purchased an Apple Watch. I had long considered getting a Fitbit, but as I'm deep in the Apple game (MacBook Pro, iPhone, AirPods), I figured why not have another device aggressively buzzing at me whenever a call came in?

When setting up your Apple Watch, you're prompted to configure the Activity app by entering some basic information about yourself (sex, age, height, weight, etc.), and from this information Apple sets a value for the red Move ring, which measures active calories burned.

The Move ring is the only activity ring that can be changed. Here's how.

Change your daily Move goal

IMG_7158

  1. Open the Activity app on your Apple Watch (it looks like three colored rings).
  2. Firmly tap the display.
  3. Tap "Change Move Goal."

    IMG_7165
  4. Tap the "-" and "+" buttons to adjust.

    IMG_7168
  5. Tap "Update" once finished.

On Mondays, you'll receive a notification detailing the activity achievements of the previous week. Based on this information, Apple Watch suggests a Move goal for the upcoming week, which you can adjust.

Read more:How to change and customize the face of your Apple Watch

Close your Exercise and Stand rings

IMG_7172

The other activity rings are the green Exercise ring, which counts minutes of "brisk activity." To close this ring, you need to complete 30 minutes of exercise each day, though you can customize the metrics you see for each workout from your Apple Watch app.

The blue Stand ring tracks how many times you've stood and moved at least one minute out of each hour. It closes after standing for one minute for twelve different hours. For wheelchair users, the Stand ring becomes a Roll ring with various features for accessibility.

Change notification settings on the Watch iPhone app

IMG_7174

Apple Watch offers reminders, coaching, and recommendations to help you close your rings, which you can control in the Watch iPhone app.

To access these settings, go to the My Watch tab on the Watch app and tap Activity. From here, you can turn off notifications entirely or customize the notifications you receive, such as stand reminders (a gentle reminder 50 minutes into the hour if you haven't already done so to stand and move around for a minute), daily coaching (encouraging nudges to help you complete Activity goals and Monthly Challenges), and goal completions (animations that appear on your Apple Watch screen when you reach Move, Exercise, and Stand goals).

While closing the Stand ring is fairly straightforward, the Move and Exercise rings can involve more subtle measurements, and I've completed workouts that weren't "counted," or the Watch recorded a workout when I hadn't done one.

Apple offers tips to get the most accurate measurements from your Apple Watch, which include keeping your personal information up to date, using the Workout app to ensure you earn both Move and Exercise credits (the Activity app tracks movement using arm motion and an accelerometer, while the Workout app employs the accelerometer, heart rate sensor, and GPS), and making sure your Apple Watch fits snugly, but comfortably, against your wrist so that the sensors can do their job.

The 23 women who have accused Trump of sexual misconduct

$

Trump with 2012 Miss Universe, Miss Teen USA, and Miss USA.

  • At least 23 women have accused President Donald Trump of sexual misconduct since the 1970s.
  • Renewed attention has been brought to the allegations amid the #MeToo movement and a national conversation concerning sexual misconduct.
  • Trump continues to deny all of the accusations, calling the women "liars."

President Donald Trump said during a press conference in September 2018 that his view of the sexual misconduct allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh is "absolutely" influenced by the multiple allegations of sexual assault and harassment that have been made against him.

The president said these "false allegations" against him were made by "women who got paid a lot of money to make up stories about me." And then alleged that the "mainstream media" refused to report on evidence that the accusations were made up.

As a national conversation on sexual misconduct is gripping the country from Hollywood to Capitol Hill, some renewed attention has been focused on the sexual misconduct allegations that at least 23 women have made against Trump since the 1970s.

A deluge of women made their accusations public following the October 2016 release of the "Access Hollywood" tape, in which Trump was recorded boasting about grabbing women's genitals in 2005. Some others made their stories public months before the tape's release, and still others came forward as recently as December.

Trump has dismissed all of the allegations — which include ogling, harassment, groping, and rape — as "fabricated" and politically motivated accounts pushed by the media and his political opponents, and promised to sue all of his accusers. In some cases, he and his lawyer have suggested that Trump didn't engage in the alleged behavior with a certain woman because she was not attractive enough.

"Every woman lied when they came forward to hurt my campaign," the Republican nominee said during a 2016 rally. "Total fabrication. The events never happened. Never. All of these liars will be sued after the election is over."

Trump has not yet made good on his promise to sue any of the women — although one, Summer Zervos, has sued him for defamation after he called all of his accusers liars – and the White House says that Trump's election proves the American people don't consider the allegations disqualifying.

"The people of this country, at a decisive election, supported President Trump, and we feel like these allegations have been answered through that process," White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters in December 2017, after several of the president's accusers appeared on national television to rehash their allegations.

But despite Trump's denials, 50% of voters — 59% of women and 41% of men — surveyed in a December 2017 Quinnipiac poll released think the president should resign as a result of the sexual misconduct allegations against him. Several Democratic lawmakers have recently called on Trump to resign over the accusations.

One accuser, Samantha Holvey, who out again last year about her experience with Trump as a Miss USA pageant contestant, said that while his election was painful, she and others see the #MeToo movement as an opportunity to "try round two."

"We're private citizens, and for us to put ourselves out there to try and show America who this man is and especially how he views women, and for them to say 'meh, we don't care' — it hurts," Holvey said on NBC News' "Megyn Kelly Today" in December 2017. "And so now it's just like, all right, let's try round two. The environment's different. Let's try again."

Here are all of the allegations — in chronological order — made by 23 named women:

Allegations:

Jessica Leeds told the New York Times in October 2016 that Trump reached his hand up her skirt and groped her while seated next to her on a flight in the late 1970s.

"He was like an octopus. His hands were everywhere," Leeds said, adding that she fled to the back of the plane.

During an interview on NBC News' "Megyn Kelly Today" in December, Leeds added that she was at a gala in New York three years after the incident on the plane when she ran into Trump, who recognized her and called her a c---.

"He called me the worst name ever," she said. "It was shocking. It was like a bucket of cold water being thrown over me."

Trump's response:

Trump denied the allegations and during a rally in October 2016, suggested that Leeds wasn't attractive enough for him to assault.

"People that are willing to say, 'Oh, I was with Donald Trump in 1980, I was sitting with him on an airplane, and he went after me,'" Trump said. "Believe me, she would not be my first choice."

Ivana Trump

Allegations:

In a 1990 divorce deposition, Trump's first wife and the mother of his three eldest children Ivana Trump accused her then-husband of raping her in a fit of rage in 1989.

Ivana said Trump attacked her after he underwent a painful "scalp reduction" procedure done by a doctor she had recommended, tearing her clothes and yanking out a chunk of her hair.

"Then he jams his penis inside her for the first time in more than 16 months. Ivana is terrified … It is a violent assault," Harry Hurt III, who obtained a copy of the deposition, wrote in a 1993 book about Trump. "According to versions she repeats to some of her closest confidantes, 'he raped me.'"

Ivana later slightly altered her allegation, saying that while she felt "violated" on that occasion, she hadn't accused Trump of raping her "in a literal or criminal sense."

"[O]n one occasion during 1989, Mr. Trump and I had marital relations in which he behaved very differently toward me than he had during our marriage," Ivana wrote in a 1993 statement. "As a woman, I felt violated, as the love and tenderness, which he normally exhibited towards me, was absent. I referred to this as a 'rape,' but I do not want my words to be interpreted in a literal or criminal sense."

Ivana is mother to Donald Jr., Eric, and Ivanka Trump.

Trump's response:

Trump called Hurt's description of Ivana's allegation "obviously false" in 1993, according to Newsday. Trump's lawyer, Michael Cohen, argued in 2015 that his client could not have raped Ivana because "you cannot rape your spouse."

"There's very clear case law," he said.

Cohen later recanted, saying his comment was "inarticulate."

Kristin Anderson

Allegations:

Kristin Anderson, a photographer and former model said Trump reached under her skirt and touched her vagina through her underwear at a New York City nightclub in the early 1990s.

Anderson, then in her early 20s, said she wasn't talking with Trump at the time and didn't realize he was sitting next to her when he groped her without her consent.

"So, the person on my right who, unbeknownst to me at that time was Donald Trump, put their hand up my skirt. He did touch my vagina through my underwear, absolutely. And as I pushed the hand away and I got up and I turned around and I see these eyebrows, very distinct eyebrows, of Donald Trump," she told The Washington Post in October 2016.

Anderson said she and her friends, who were talking together around a table at the time of the incident, were "very grossed out and weirded out," but thought "Okay, Donald is gross. We all know he's gross. Let's just move on."

Trump's response:

"Mr. Trump strongly denies this phony allegation by someone looking to get some free publicity," Hope Hicks, the president's then-spokeswoman and current White House communications director, told the Post in October 2016. "It is totally ridiculous."

We all accept the fact that sleep is important — though new studies suggest we may even still be underestimating how much.

And, given its impact on our moods, energy levels, and overall health, there seems to be no shortage of solutions for the most common sleep complaints.

Can’t sleep in anything less than a pitch-black room? Get blackout curtains. Have a hard time settling down before bed? Check out Som sleep drinks, ambient lighting, blue light glasses, relaxing sprays, meditation apps, and calming diffusers. Have a tough time getting a solid nights sleep? Grab some melatonin supplements, weighted blankets, and temperature regulating bedding.

There’s also a wealth of best practices to follow, ranging from common sense to ingenious. For example, studies show it’s harder to sleep in a cluttered room than a clean one, as well as more difficult to sleep in a room with bright colors than one with muted tones.

But no matter the plethora of options, dealing with noise complaints is different. It’s not as easy as getting blackout curtains or switching to blue light glasses if you have to use devices before bed. Snoring partners, disruptive traffic, and your neighbor’s new yappy dog can pose unique frustrations — because they're much harder to solve. If you can’t stop the cars from driving, you're just going to have to find a way to mask the sound.

Below are 7 products that aim to help you sleep better if your main concern is noise — ranging from luxe to cheap.

A headphone headband comfortable enough to sleep on

AcousticSheep Wireless Bluetooth Sleep Headphones, $100, available at Amazon

Find the full review here.

The AcousticSheep Wireless Bluetooth Sleep Headphones are the original sleep-friendly headphones created by a family physician to help patients fall asleep faster without relying on drugs. If you'd prefer to cover the noises of traffic or dogs with your go-to music playlist (or white noise sounds), I think this is your best option in terms of comfort and sound.

Unlike many similar products, the AcousticSheep SleepPhones work like any other pair of headphones — letting you play whatever music or white noise you like, rather than being restricted to a preset selection of sounds. And unless you're playing them at a very high volume, a partner should not be able to hear the noise.

Our top pick for a white noise machine with 30 sound environment options

Sound+Sleep High Fidelity Sleep Sound Machine, $79.93, available at Amazon

You can find the full guide to the best sound machines you can buy here, but suffice it to say that he Sound+Sleep sleep sound machine offers amazing versatility, high-quality sound, many options to choose from, and a timer.

There are ten basic sounds that come as presets: fireplace, waterfall, white noise, meditation, brook, rainfall, train, city, meadow, and ocean.

You can add in two additional levels of sound to each of those basics. For example, train starts, train whistles, bells, and the sound of train couplers tapping against each other. You also get white noise, pink noise, and brown noise options. And the tracks aren't short, unnatural loops either. You get naturally recorded, high-fidelity sounds. Plus, the machine "listens" to the ambient noise already in your bedroom, and adjusts its volume in response to help further protect your sleep.

If you'd rather not play the sounds out loud because of a sleeping partner or thin walls, there's a headphone jack so you can listen on your own. If you want comfortable sleep headphones to pair it with, you may want to check out AcousticSheep's cheaper $40 classic corded sleep headphones which are still compact and soft enough to sleep on top of comfortably.

Sleep buds that block noise for up to 16 hours after one charge

Bose Sleepbuds, $249, available at Best Buy and Amazon

Bose's newly developed Sleepbuds are tiny in-ear buds specifically designed to mask noise and be slept on top of comfortably, even while on your side.

For the Sleepbuds, Bose prioritized every concern connected to sleep. However, because the necessary tech would have pushed them to an uncomfortably large size, the Sleepbuds only play ten preloaded soothing and relaxing sounds via an app instead of streaming music. Some tracks are optimized for masking noise, and some for relaxation.

With one charge, they'll deliver on 16 hours of playtime. You can also set alarms and timers.

The Sleepbuds also come in an attractive charge case built specifically for the prime real estate of a nightstand.

7 dangerous foods that could raise your risk of developing cancer

$

hot dog eating

  • Some cancers are genetic, but many are connected to certain lifestyle choices, like smoking and diet.
  • One of the simplest ways to reduce your cancer risk is to cut down on certain foods, especially processed meat and packaged convenience foods.
  • Here are seven items to avoid.

Some cancers are unavoidable. Cancer can be determined by our genes, and some cases are prompted by environmental factors we have little control over, like air pollution, radiation, or workplace chemicals.

But nearly half of US cancer cases and deaths are linked to preventable risk factors, and scientific research has revealed that it's possible to lower your chances of getting sick. The biggest cancer-causing culprit is smoking. Being overweight and not getting enough exercise are also major contributors.

One of the simplest, quickest ways to reduce your cancer risk, however, is to cut down on certain foods that we know are linked to more cancer cases.

Here are seven of the riskiest foods:

SEE ALSO: 32 science-backed ways to reduce your risk of developing cancer

Eating more processed food can up your cancer risk.

Scientists in France recently zeroed in on a troubling link: people who eat more ultra-processed foods, including items like chips, candy, soda, frozen dinners and instant ramen, develop more cancer than those who cook with raw ingredients at home. So food that comes pre-packaged in plastic wrap or on a microwaveable tray should be eaten only sparingly.

Red meat has a protein that can damage our intestines, making it easier to get colon cancer.

Red meat isn't officially listed as a cancer-causer, but it's got a compound called "haem" or heme protein, which is what makes it red. Unfortunately, haem can also damage our intestinal lining.

Processed meats like sausage, bacon, and hot dogs can up a person's cancer risk, especially if they're eaten on a regular basis.

Eating large quantities of meat that has been salted, cured, or smoked, — like ham, sausage, bacon, and hot dogs — can cause stomach and bowel cancers. That is largely because processed meats are treated with nitrates: chemical additions that help keep the color of the meat pink and the flavor tasty and salty. The same can even be true of so-called "nitrate free" varieties of processed meat.

I went to Joshua Tree after the government shutdown. Even though it looked picture-perfect, it could actually take the park 300 years to recover from the damage.

Joshua Tree National Park photo

  • During the recent, monthlong government shutdown, national parks such as Joshua Tree were trashed and vandalized.
  • But when I visited Joshua Tree for the first time this month, the park looked picture-perfect.
  • An expert explained to me that for the local ecosystem, this kind of damage can take hundreds of years to repair.

The damage done to the iconic Joshua Tree National Park during the recent, monthlong government shutdown captivated and horrified many people.

I was one of them. And as a frequent visitor to US national parks, I was planning a trip to Joshua Tree just weeks after the shutdown ended. I wasn't quite sure what to expect there.

After all, vandals had reportedly knocked down Joshua trees and spray-painted graffiti. And, with few park staff on duty, public toilets were filled, and visitors reportedly scattered trash.

It could take hundreds of years for the park to recover, a former Joshua Tree superintendent said.

But when I visited this month for the first time, the California park's more than 1,200 square miles of desert looked just like the guidebook cover.

I was struck not by the damage, as I had expected, but by the Joshua trees themselves: vividly green and spiky, and looking much like a Dr. Seuss creation, a comparison that's frequently drawn.

When I reached David Lamfrom, the California desert director for the National Parks Conservation Association, by phone last week, he was glad to hear about my experience and said it suggested that the desert had been restored at the surface level. Having park staff back at work, thanks to a temporary funding bill at the end of January, is a key part of that, he said.

But that pristine perception I got was also deceptive. Because of a dearth of moisture, time and plant growth works differently in the desert, he said. A plant may be tiny and humble-looking despite being incredibly old. If a Joshua tree is cut down, it could take 100 to 200 years before a new tree grows to provide the same kinds of ecological services to what's around it, including lizards, owls, and hawks.

"It's not that the place as a whole is ruined," he said. "It's that to replace what has been damaged will take a period that's far longer than any of our lifetimes."

Read more: It could take 300 years for Joshua Tree National Park to recover from the government shutdown

Joshua trees were supposedly named after the Prophet Joshua by Mormons because of their upward-reaching limbs. There are probably thousands of them in the park, where they dot the landscape.

The National Parks Conservation Association's Lamfrom was in Joshua Tree in the first days of the shutdown and said he encountered a madhouse. Just a few hours away from Los Angeles and other major cities, the park attracts about 2.8 million visitors annually, and the winter is an especially popular time.

He described it as a story of competing forces, with the "absolute maximum visitation and absolute minimum supervision," because just a skeleton crew of staffers was working. In addition to the park rangers, some of whom reportedly worked without pay during the shutdown, plenty of others helped out during the shutdown, including volunteers and community members.

We put these melatonin drinks to the test to see if they helped us sleep better — it turns out they actually made a difference

  • Som Sleep claims to be a drug-free, non-habit-forming beverage that helps support sleep.
  • The formula includes melatonin, magnesium, vitamin B6, L-theanine, and GABA to promote relaxation, maintain a normal sleep cycle, and support healthy sleep patterns.
  • It's labeled as gluten-, dairy-, GMO-, and sugar-free as well as vegan and NSF-certified.
  • We tried it, and it did help us get to sleep (even for testers with noted insomnia or light sleeping habits), but some of us also noticed a groggy wake-up.
  • You can pick up 4, 12, or 24 cans on Amazon from $10 - $60.

Few things in life rank as frustrating as finally getting into bed after a long day and laying awake.

Som Sleep, a relatively new dietary supplement, is a beverage that might be able to help. The formula utilizes ingredients naturally found in the body and a healthy diet (like magnesium, vitamin B6, and melatonin) to promote a normal sleep cycle, healthy sleep pattern, and relaxation. The result is a sleep aid free of many of the concerns frequently raised; it claims to be drug-free, non-habit-forming, gluten-, dairy-, and GMO-free, and NSF-certified. And depending on which formula you buy (Original or Zero Sugar), it can also be free of sugar.

The company sent a 24-pack of the Original and Zero Sugar formula to our team, and we tested them out. The overall opinion is that they really do work — and we wouldn't chalk it up to a placebo effect.

As vice president of Insider Picks Breton Fischetti said:

I popped open a can of SOM expecting it to be something of a placebo drink — perhaps the fact that I told myself I was drinking it would make it easier to sleep. However, within about 20 minutes I was noticeably drowsy. I crawled over to bed, was asleep within seconds, and slept fully through the night. Also worth noting, for someone who doesn't usually remember dreams, the ones I had when I used SOM were especially vivid.

In another instance, as someone who deals with insomnia, I found Som Sleep to be similarly effective.

Personally, I had almost never taken a sleep aid — of any kind. I am one of those odd people who can fall asleep nearly anywhere, and, at the end of a long day, it doesn’t take more than some incense and dim lighting. But I've recently been trying to transition from 20+ years of being semi-nocturnal to being a chipper, gym-going "morning person." These are helping me make a 9PM bedtime easier to adjust to. And one of these plus a warm shower knocks me out into the sort of sleep that I still associate with the exhaustion of post-finals week in college.

The company recommends you make sure you set aside 7-8 hours of sleep time after drinking Som Sleep, and we would emphasize this. Though Som Sleep does help you get to sleep faster and to sleep deeper, we did notice that waking up we did feel groggier than on a morning without Som Sleep (though that could be affected by being awoken out of deep sleep to alarms rather than naturally). Breton noted that there was a longer adjustment period: "I did find that I was especially groggy and struggled to get my brain function back up to speed at my usual rate.  Overall I would say that it's a useful tool if you'd like to do everything you can to guarantee a good night of sleep and you don't have too much to do the following morning." So, just to be cautious, you might not want to make Som Sleep a daily practice. But if you've got a block period for some quality sleep and recuperation in your life, then you might find a great, purportedly non-habit forming aid in Som Sleep.

On the plus side, at $30 for 12 (~$2.50/can) it won’t break the bank if you want to keep some around the house for nights you really need a good rest.

The original formula has quite a bit of sugar (8g per can), so each of our testers gravitated towards the light blue cans of their sugar-free formula. For reference, the Original (with sugar) has 40 calories per can, and the Zero Sugar option has 10 calories per can.

If you're looking for a stronger sleep aid than chamomile tea but might appreciate trying out something inexpensive and non-habit-forming first before anything more intensive, Som Sleep might be worth checking out. We found that it did help us get to sleep faster and deeper. If you have to wake up early or hate the grogginess that can accompany waking up from a deep sleep, you might want to pass.

top amazon books 4x3

Before it became a retail Goliath offering everything from bulk packs of toilet paper to wedding registries, Amazon started by peddling paperbacks online.

And despite the massive expansion in its offerings (according to a 2018 press release there are roughly 100 million Prime-eligible items alone), it's still one of the best spots to pick up a new book. You won't get to wander through the dust motes of your favorite local library or have an excuse to spend Saturday morning wedged in between smells-like-old-paper Barnes & Noble stacks, but you'll save yourself time and money by ordering from the living room couch.

The selection is admittedly huge, but you can shop leaner curations by heading to its award winners, best books of the month (or year), and 100 books to read in a lifetime. Or, you can just skip straight to the top 20 titles the online giant has sold the most of to its global audience since it first began. Given the online behemoth's scale, the list also serves as an interesting — albeit unofficial — peek at what books people, in general, are really reading most.

  • A good pillow means a good night's sleep. We reviewed dozens of pillows to narrow down the choices to the ones you’ll love best.
  • The Coop Home Goods Adjustable Shredded Memory Foam Pillow is our top pick. You’ll enjoy sweet dreams on this supremely comfortable pillow.

Back in the days of Ancient Egypt, a carved stone was considered a very comfortable and supportive pillow, but in today’s world, you’re probably looking for something a bit softer. Luckily, you’ve got a lot more to choose from than the people of ancient times.

There’s a nearly dizzying array of pillows on display in any bed ‘n bath shop, or on the virtual shelves of your favorite online home store. That can make it a bit difficult to choose the best pillow for your needs. Is memory foam best? How about down? Or maybe you’re confused about all the different shapes: standard, contour, bolster. Well, have no fear, because we’ve done the research for you.

While ultimately, there is no “best for everyone” pillow — personal preference plays a huge part in determining the pillow you’ll like the most — we checked out all the top recommendations from consumer buying websites, listened to what pillow buyers had to say, and even tried out some of the pillows ourselves to bring you the pillows most likely to send you off to the land of Nod comfortably.

The best pillow overall

Why you'll love it: The Premium Adjustable Shredded Memory Foam Pillow from Coop Home Goods will have you sleeping like a baby with its perfect support and variable firmness.

“Ahhh.” That’s the sigh of contentment you’ll utter as your weary head meets the Coop Home Goods Premium Adjustable Memory Foam Pillow. It's the number-one best-selling pillow on Amazon, and it's filled with shredded memory foam. You’ll get the support and comfortable “sinking in” sensation of a traditional memory foam pillow, but none of the excessive heat or firmness that can be a problem with solid foam.

What makes the Coop Home Goods pillow particularly wonderful is that it’s adjustable. You can unzip the inner pillow cover to add or remove foam until the pillow is just the way you like it. It’s also hypoallergenic and dust-mite resistant, so you won’t wake up sniffly or congested. When it’s time to clean the pillow, no problem — Just toss it in your washing machine and dryer. We recommend that you add another pillow or a blanket to balance the load, along with a couple of clean tennis balls to help fluff up the foam.

Coop Home Goods’ proprietary shredded memory foam is CertiPUR-US certified, meaning it’s guaranteed to be free of chemicals and toxins you really don’t want to sleep with, such as formaldehyde, lead, mercury, ozone depleters, PBDEs, phthalates, and TCEP flame retardants. Manufactured in California, the pillow has a 30-day guarantee, so if you don’t love it, you can return it with no questions asked.

Sleep Like the Dead found that 89% of buyers love the Coop Home Goods Premium Adjustable Shredded Memory Foam Pillow. In fact, it’s the highest-rated memory foam pillow on the site. That matches Amazon’s numbers, where out of an astounding 12,200+ reviews, 85% give the pillow four or more stars.

Hundreds of buyers call this the best pillow they’ve ever owned, praise its breathability and adjustability, and love the way it supports their neck and head. As one pleased reviewer wrote, “It’s like sleeping on an adjustable cloud.” The most common negative comments were in regard to the pillow’s odor, which can be strong initially, but fades away within a day or two.

The Premium Adjustable Memory Foam Pillow has a polyester/bamboo cover that is cool and comfortable for sleep, and it's easily removed for washing. Inside, there’s an interlock knit cover to contain the foam. Both covers have zippers so you can access the foam for easy adjustment.

Pros: Adjustable loft, very supportive and comfortable, not too hot

Cons: Some initial odor, you have to let it expand from vacuum-sealed packaging

Buy the Premium Adjustable Memory Foam Pillow from Coop Home Goods for $59.99 and up (price varies by size)

Buy the queen Coop Home Goods Premium Adjustable Memory Foam Pillow on Amazon for $59.99 and up (price varies by size)

The best hybrid pillow

Why you'll love it: The Leesa Hybrid Pillow combines the best of both worlds with a firm gel pillow base and a soft quilted top layer.

The Leesa Hybrid pillow is the perfect pillow for anyone who wants the firm support of a memory foam pillow and the soft cushy feel of a down pillow at the same time. The combination seems impossible, but Leesa has done it.

The Hybrid Pillow has a down-like quilted pocket layer on one side, a firmer, ventilated gel comfort layer on the other side, and a removable pillow insert between these two layers. The multi-layered approach makes this a very customizable pillow.

You can take the quilted pillowtop part off and use the firmer pillow base, you can flip it over and sleep on the cool gel side, or you can take the firm center out and just use the fluffy quilted top as your pillow.

I've been sleeping on this pillow for months now and I love it. The gel pillow base is firm enough to make me feel like I'm still sleeping on my memory foam pillow, but the soft, quilted down alternative topper makes it more comfortable to rest my head on the pillow at night. I'm a side sleeper, so I need support, but sometimes my very firm memory foam pillow can hurt my ears if I stay on one side for too long (the human head is heavy!)

I'm not the only person who loves this pillow, either. Several other Insider Picks staffers tried it and loved it. Nonbiased Reviews also recommends it highly.

The only real downside here is that this pillow is expensive at $125 to $135. However, given how versatile it is and the fact that it will last you for years, it's well worth the price. It's also not a huge risk because you can use it for 100 nights and if you decide you hate it, you can return it — no questions asked.

If you still have qualms, Leesa's philanthropy should assuage your concerns a bit. The pillow is part of Leesa's One-Ten Program, in which one pillow is donated for every 10 sold.

Pros: Firm pillow base, soft pillow top, adjustable design, cooling gel layer, 100 night trial

Cons: Expensive

Buy the Leesa Hybrid Pillow for $99 (originally $125) or $109 (originally $135)

The best down pillow

Why you'll love it: Down isn’t just for the birds — The Royal Hotel Goose Down Pillow is so feathery-soft, you’ll dream you’re sleeping in the clouds.

Some inferior down pillows are really stuffed mostly with feathers. That means you run the risk of being poked by a stray quill. Plus, feathers are not as soft and fluffy as down. The Royal Hotel Goose Down Pillow is filled with 100% goose down, which is much fluffier than less desirable duck down, so you’ll enjoy a luxuriously comfortable night of sleep.

Royal Hotel doesn’t skimp on the down, either. With a 750 fill power and 35-ounce fill weight, you’re getting lots of downy comfort in a very supportive pillow that isn’t too soft and isn’t too firm. Plus, the down is sanitized to remove allergens and bacteria, so you can enjoy the pillow even if you are usually allergic to feathers. The cover of the pillow is 100% cotton, with a 500-thread count, so it’s soft and smooth, but strong enough to contain the down.

Amazon buyers love this pillow, with 83% of the 400+ reviewers giving it four or more stars. Reviewers say, “these pillows are wonderfully full and hold their loft through the night,” “the best pillows ever,” and “very nice pillows, well-filled and they do not collapse under the weight of your head.” Many customers commented that the pillows were firmer than they expected, which might be good or bad depending on your preference.

Sleep Like the Dead also likes the Royal Hotel down pillows, reporting that 87% of surveyed customers were very pleased with their purchase.

For down pillows, the price is actually quite reasonable, but Royal Hotel only sells the pillows by the pair, making it a more expensive purchase overall.

Pros: High quality down, firm, comfortable support

I spent 4 hours in Emirates' flagship business class lounge, where wealthy travelers sip champagne, get massages, and eat from 5 different restaurants — and it was the best airport lounge I've ever been in

  • For my 14-hour flight to New York from Dubai, I decided to fly business class for $5,400 operated by Emirates Airlines
  • Excited to fly business class for the first time, I got to the airport four hours early so I could experience one of Emirates' legendary business class lounges at Dubai International Airport's Terminal 3, a $4.5 billion building that is the largest airport terminal in the world.
  • I visited Emirates Concourse B lounge, which was recently renovated for $11 million. It features five main dining stations, a champagne bar by Moët & Chandon, a spa, a children's arcade, a Costa Coffee, and seating for 1,500 passengers.
  • Over the last year, I've visited dozens of airport lounges thanks to Priority Pass. The Emirates lounge blew all of them out of the water.

To say I was excited to fly business class for the first time would be an understatement. Add in the fact that my ticket was with Emirates, rated the fourth best airline in the world, and I was ecstatic.

Determined to get the most out of my experience, I headed to Dubai International Airport four hours early so I could experience one of Emirates' legendary business class lounges.

Over the last year, I've visited dozens of airport lounges thanks to my Priority Pass membership. Some are wonderful, but most are mediocre. Emirates' lounges, which are not open to Priority Pass members (as far as I know), are reputed to be at another level. I was excited to find out if the rumors were true.

My flight was out of DXB's Terminal 3, a $4.5 billion building considered to be the largest airport terminal in the world and the second largest building in the world, by floor area.

Emirates has six lounges in DXB, three of which are in Terminal 3. Luckily, I was scheduled to fly out of Concourse B, whose lounge was refurbished two and a half years ago for $11 million.

It did not disappoint. Here's what it was like:

DON'T MISS: I've spent 6 months traveling the world on business, and I've found the perfect way to make airports less miserable

My journey with Emirates began at Terminal 3, Dubai International Airport's dedicated Emirates terminal. The $4.5 billion building is the largest airport terminal in the world and the second largest building in the world, by floor area.

After making it through the dedicated business class and first class entrance, check-in, and security screening, I got into an elevator to take me to the concourse.

Much to my dismay, the elevator did not drop me directly in front of the business class lounge. I'm sure this is intentional.

As is en vogue for most new terminals, Terminal 3 looks more like a luxury mall than an airport. The concourse is lined with duty-free shops, restaurants, and luxury retailers. I didn't even see a gate ...

Skyroam Solis wi-fi hotspot

  • One of the most frustrating things about traveling abroad is figuring out a cost-effective way to use your smartphone while avoiding roaming charges.
  • While there are a few options, most of them are expensive or don't give you enough usable data.
  • The $150 Skyroam Solis portable Wi-Fi hotspot, offers unlimited 4G LTE service while traveling without having to worry about SIM cards or overages.

Using your smartphone while you're abroad is, somehow, one of the most frustrating things about traveling. We've become so used to relying on constant connectivity to upload photos to Instagram, stay in touch with group chats, and navigate with Google Maps that at this point, it's fairly hard to go completely without it — especially when you're somewhere new. When you're in a different country, though, and use your smartphone, you might find yourself racking up massive roaming fees.

There are a couple of options to avoid the worst of pay-as-you-go roaming. You can register for a short-term international roaming plan with your service provider, but the more affordable options usually don't come with that much usable data — you don't want to find yourself paying a fortune per megabyte after you absentmindedly check Facebook one time.

Another option is to leave your phone on airplane mode unless you're near a free public Wi-Fi hotspot. Unfortunately, those are often unreliable, and sometimes they're few and far between.

You can also buy a local prepaid SIM card at your destination and put it inside your phone. You'll need an unlocked phone, though, and you won't be able to get calls and texts at your usual number. Plus, it might not be a worthwhile investment — you might not be able to use it in any other country, and oftentimes you can't add credits to the plan from outside of the country where you bought it.

In some places, like Tokyo, it's easy to rent a portable Wi-Fi hotspot to use all around the country — you can even pick them up from the airport — but this isn't as easy everywhere, and if there are any issues picking up the hotspot at the start of your trip, you're out of luck.

So while there have been fixes to this first-world problem, they've been clunky and inefficient, and over the course of a few trips, they're not very cost-effective.

Before a recent trip overseas, I learned about a new option, called the Skyroam Solis, and decided that I had to test it out. By the end of my vacation, I was happy to say that I'd found the best way to stay connected when I travel.

The Skyroam Solis is a portable Wi-Fi hotspot that works in over 110 countries, with more being added continuously.

It's incredibly simple to use, and doesn't require swapping out any SIM cards. You just power up the hotspot, connect your phone and computer, and register it by filling out some information on a landing page. Then, you can purchase day passes for 24 hours of unlimited 4G data. Day passes are $9 each, and Skyroam has announced a monthly unlimited plan for an introductory $99 a month — eventually, it will go up to $125. There's no contract, so you can cancel any time.

Skyroam Solis Wi-Fi Hotspot

I received a demo unit and tested it extensively in London and Paris during my recent week-long trip. It worked almost flawlessly.

There was only one instance when my phone's connection to the device dropped and I couldn't reconnect, but this was easily fixed by turning the hotspot off and on again.

Service was fast and reliable, and it felt indistinguishable from just using my phone at home. The only connection issue I noticed was that it could take a minute or so to find a connection whenever I came out of the London Underground, which doesn't have wireless service — I don't hold this against the Solis, though, since my iPhone X had the same problem when I switched to cellular data for comparison.

Battery life is rated at 16 hours of continuous use, and in practice I found that it lasted throughout the day. I generally charged it when I went back to my hotel before dinner, but that was more "just in case" than it was necessary. It lasted throughout the one day that I didn't have time to make it back to my room before nighttime. You can also use the Solis as a portable charger for your phone, though keep in mind that this will affect the hotspot's battery life.

You can connect up to five devices at a time to the Solis. If you're traveling with family or friends, that means that one day pass will cover everyone's data for the day.

The device itself is $149.99 on Amazon, and comes with one free day pass. I checked my cell phone carrier's website, and found that by the end of my planned travel for this winter and spring, the Solis would be less expensive than any useful international roaming plan I could sign up for — that includes the cost of the device and day passes, though factors in my travel companions who can also avoid the pricey roaming plans.

My suggestion to anyone using the Skyroam service would be to sign up for your cell phone provider's cheapest international plan, which should cover any calls or texts. I'd also suggest making sure to turn data roaming off in your phone's settings once you're connected to the hotspot — that way, you don't accidentally use data and find yourself surprised by charges.

The hassle-free nature of the Skyroam Solis has made it my new favorite travel gadget. I have a few more trips planned this year, and have every intention of bringing a Skyroam Solis with me.
