The 20 cities where Americans have the longest commute to work

$

subway, commute

In the US, most working Americans— about 108 million of them — drive alone in a car, truck, or van to get to work. On average, Americans commute about 25 minutes each way to and from work.

But when you live in a major US city like New York City or Los Angeles, how you get from point A to point B changes significantly.

And in most highly populated cities, even if you're only traveling a mere mile or so, you wind up spending more of your life commuting.

Using data collected from the US Census Bureau, personal-finance site WalletHub ranked 116 of the most populated cities based on the average number of minutes residents spend traveling from home to work. Using that same data, Business Insider also looked at how people commute to and from work in each city.

Here's how the 20 cities with the longest commute times stack up:

Apple just busted the biggest myth about how to save your iPhone's battery life (AAPL)

$

alex heath iphone 2_1024

Closing unused apps on your iPhone won't improve its battery life.

I repeat, opening up the multitasking window and swiping apps off the screen won't help your iPhone get through the day.

That's according to Craig Federighi, the head of software development at Apple.

Apple fan Caleb sent an email to CEO Tim Cook asking, "Do you quit your iOS multitasking apps frequently and is this necessary for battery life?" 9to5Mac has a copy of the email.

Federighi replied: "No and No. :-)"

The myth that closing unused apps can save battery life has been long-running and pernicious. It's widely believed, and it has even been suggested by reputable publications as a tip.

That has led to the popular habit of swiping to close the apps in the multitasking window until it's entirely empty.

Killing those appz

The misconception has been debunked several times, but former Apple technician and MartianCraft CEO Kyle Richter wrote a great and detailed explanation earlier this month about why closing unused apps could actually hurt your phone's battery life.

Many people think that force-quitting these apps will at the very least do no harm since "they aren't running anyways." The logic of "…you might as well quit, just in case" comes into play ...

The very process of quitting an app will use up a measurable amount of battery life. There are times when the device may need those resources and it will quit the app on your behalf, which will drain the battery in the same fashion. However, modern smartphones have an abundance of memory and you would be surprised how often an app can just stay suspended forever. This is doubly true for any app that you are frequently launching and using, these apps in all likelihood will never need to be closed and the repetitive exiting and relaunching can have a very noticeable toll on your battery life.

Federighi obviously didn't go into the same level of detail as Richter, but he clearly has a great grasp of how iOS works, and his word should be considered the final one on closing unused apps.

So the next time you have an Apple rumor you want busted, you might try shooting Tim Cook an email.

Physical Therapy Stretches 13

When it comes to stretching, there's a wide world filled with all kinds of different moves: Yoga, Pilates, dance classes — and each one seems to have its own system.

But what are the best everyday stretches for anyone looking to avoid sore muscles, get more flexible, andprotect themselves from injuries?

We turned to Marilyn Moffatt, a professor of physical therapy at New York University and author of "Age Defying Fitness," to go over some of the best basic stretches for everyone.

Note: If you have existing muscle problems or if any of these stretches is uncomfortable, don't do it. Instead, consult a physical therapist.

CHECK OUT: Eerie images of the remnants of America’s Space Race will give you chills

To start off, it's important to be conscious of what you're doing with your neck. Having good posture will help you do these stretches correctly, so bring your chin back and down and make sure your neck isn't jutting out. And for the first set of stretches, take a seat.

First up is neck rotations. Slowly move your head to the right. Moffat recommends holding any pose for 30 to 60 seconds. Repeat on the left.

The next one gets a little more complicated. Looking straight ahead, tilt your neck to the right and drape your arm so that it rests near your left ear. Your left hand will extend down toward the floor, either grabbing onto the chair or just pulling down. Repeat on the other side.

How to get the best haircut for your face shape

$

face shapes thumb

Forget everything you think you know about face shapes and haircuts — it's probably all wrong.

All that nonsense about heart- or oblong-shaped heads? For the most part, it just doesn't apply to the short, tapered, long-on-the-top haircuts popular with today's gentlemen.

According to barber Kyle Holbrook of Fellow Barber in San Francisco, you need to know only one thing about your face shape to get the most flattering haircut — whether your head is round or long.

In other words: The only thing you need to know about the shape of your head is if your face is rounder than it is long, or longer than it is round.

It's really that simple.

A rounder, wider face, like actor Daniel Craig's, should get a haircut that is tighter on the sides. This will give the whole face more length and balance out your proportions, thus giving you the illusion of having a less-round face, exactly as Craig has done.

round face

For those with a longer, squarer face — like Ryan Gosling's — they should ask for a longer length of hair on the sides and around the temples. This will frame your face and make it appear wider, which is clearly what Gosling has done.

rectangle face

These two subtle shifts can make a world of difference in how your new haircut will look on you, and the haircuts on these two leading men is proof of that.

Of course, a good barber will do this automatically, but Holbrook warns that you should always take charge of your hair if you're unsure.

This mathematical theory explains how women can be more successful on dating sites

$

woman on computer

Women who believe the man should be the one to make the first move might want to rethink their dating strategy — especially online.

New data from OKCupid, cited by The New York Times, reveals that women fare a lot better when they take the initiative to message a man.

Based on an analysis of 70,000 users who logged on at least three times in a month, OKCupid found that women are 2.5 times more likely to receive a response to their messages than men are.

Moreover, women who send the first message wind up meeting more attractive men than women who wait for a man to ping them, the report finds. That's because women generally message men who are five points more attractive (as rated by OKCupid users) than they are, while they typically receive messages from men who are seven points less attractive than they are.

At the same time, OKCupid found that men currently send 3.5 times the number of messages women send, suggesting that few women are aware of the advantages of stepping up to the plate.

This new data supports a theory popularized by Hannah Fry, a mathematician at the UCL Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis in London and author of the 2015 book "The Mathematics of Love."

In the book, Fry describes the "stable marriage problem," or the challenge of matching two entities so that neither would be better off in another match, and explains the Gale-Shapley matching algorithm often used to solve it. Exploiting this algorithm can be a great strategy for successful online dating.

Here's how it works: Fry uses the example of three boys talking to three girls at a party. Each participant has an ordered list of who is most suitable to go home with.

mathematics dating

If this was a 1950s-style dating scenario in which the boys approached the girls, each boy would hit on his top-choice girl, Fry says. If a girl has multiple offers, she would choose the boy she preferred most, and if a boy were rejected, he would approach his second-choice girl.

The result is pretty great for the boys. Each gets his first- or second-choice partner, and there is no way the boys could improve, because their top choices have said yes or already rejected them.

The girls fare relatively worse, however, having paired up with their second- or third-choice partners.

math of love book jacketFry writes:

Regardless of how many boys and girls there are, it turns out that whenever the boys do the approaching, there are four outcomes that will be true:

1. Everyone will find a partner.

2. Once all partners are determined, no man and woman in different couples could both improve their happiness by running off together.

3. Once all partners are determined, every man will have the best partner available to him.

4. Once all partners are determined, every woman will end up with the least bad of all the men who approach her.

Essentially, whoever does the asking (and is willing to face rejection until achieving the best available option) is better off. Meanwhile, the person who sits back and waits for advances settles for the least bad option on the table.

Bottom line: If you're a woman waiting to be chosen by a man, try mustering the courage to do the choosing yourself. There's a much better chance you'll find someone you actually like, instead of settling for what's available.

This small trick can save you serious cash on flights

$
0
0

Sometimes, the trick to finding the best flight price isn't just the time that you book your trip, but also where you're booking from.

A ticket's "point of sale," or the location where it's being purchased from, can affect its pricing.

When you're looking at flights online, there's a trick that you can use to change your "point of sale" on the airline's website, to make it appear as though the tickets are being purchased from another location.

The simplest way is to go directly to the airline's website and look for the drop-down menu that asks which country's webpage you'd like, at which point you can switch it from the US version to your desired choice.

avianca

It's a tip that savvy travelers like Brian Kelly, founder of The Points Guy, have used.

Kelly told Business Insider he recommends that users looking to book through Norwegian Air visit the company’s Norwegian version for discounts.

Another option is to search through Google's ITA Matrix, software that allows you to compare fares and see a calendar of prices.

When you go to ITA Matrix, you have the option to select a "Sales City," which becomes your point of sale.

ITA MatrixA third option is to use a VPN service to trick the website into thinking you're booking from somewhere else. Usually, when you go on a website, it can determine where you're booking from based on your connection.

A VPN allows you to reroute your internet traffic to make it seem as if the connection is coming from a different location.

It's important to bear in mind that airlines' policies regarding this trick can differ.

Some airlines like Norwegian Air will openly honor the ticket, but other airlines are unclear on this, so it's best to check with them first.

"We want to offer the lowest fares possible, so if you find that through a different location, we'll honor that," Réal Hamilton-Romeo, a senior public relations manager for the US branch of Norwegian Air, told us.

Sometimes, the prices might be the same, but it's a good trick to keep in mind when you're scouring for all available options.

The 20 colleges with the best dining halls

When starting college, dining-hall food is rarely something students look forward to.

But at some schools, it has become a gourmet experience.

To determine which schools are stepping up their food game, we looked at noteworthy rankings from outlets with expertise in colleges and food: The Daily Meal, The Princeton Review, and Niche.

Each school earned a numerical rating based on how many of the lists it appeared on and how high it appeared on those lists. Colleges that appeared on multiple rankings scored higher on ours, while those that ranked on only one of these lists ended up closer to the bottom.

From lobster bakes to waffle bars to steak dinners, these schools serve up dishes so good they make students forget they're in a dining hall.

Not all subterranean structures are built alike. While the phrase "underground architecture" conjures images of war bunkers and crypts, some of the public spaces and private homes burrowed in the earth are beautiful examples of modern architecture.
