Where to get incredible meals on Thanksgiving in New York

Here's what everyone gets wrong about the WWE being fake

0
0

Through its live shows, television broadcasts, and digital network, WWE entertains thousands of fans every week.

Some people still view WWE as entertainment for people on the lower end of the intellectual spectrum. One reason for this is the misperception that those who watch the product think it is "real." Of course, many of the children who enjoy WWE programming may indeed think they are seeing actual conflicts being resolved through in-ring combat. The truth is that most adult fans realize it is all a big production.

In the past few years, WWE cofounder Vince McMahon has loosened his grip on the perception that what you see on TV is "real," as he has recently begun to allow his talent roster to participate in interviews in which performers break character and discuss the business in a real-world context.

The Jaguar F-Pace is the most beautiful SUV on planet Earth

0
0

Jaguar F Pace

When you wait a long time for something, you should be rewarded. That's what happened this week at the LA Auto Show, when Jaguar Land Rover finally and officially revealed its much-anticipated F-Pace crossover SUV in North America.

There has never been a Jag truck before (the XF Sportbrake station wagon, not sold in the US, doesn't count). But given the importance of these vehicles now for luxury automakers, its was overdue. Jag has sedans and sports cars, but it was lagging behind corporate siblings Land Rover and Range Rover, which of course sell SUVs and nothing else.

For anyone who adores the sleek lines of the legendary Jaguar E-Type, probably the most drop-dead gorgeous automobile ever created, the very idea of a Jag truck is horrifying. But if you're going to have one, it should look great.

And thanks to Jaguar designer Ian Callum, it does. In fact, it looks better than great. It's easily the most beautiful SUV to (soon) hit the road.

Which is a bit weird. But also understandable. The other car in the Jag stable that should showcase Ian's considerable talent is the F-Type sports car. But I've never liked it very much. Compared with another Callum design, the Aston Martin DB9 (and before it, the DB7), the F-Type to my eye comes off as musclebound and thick, like a thug in an overly tailored suit who needs brag about how much he just won (or lost) and the craps table.

Jaguar F-Type R

I'm in a distinct minority here — pretty much everyone else thinks the F-Type is a glorious set of wheels, poetry in sheet metal.

However, you can kind of see my point if you study at the F-Pace and see that same loudmouth thug in a suit that properly envelopes his bulk. The F-Type is too big. The F-Pace is just right — in its bigness Callum has found the correct scale to execute on his current vision.

1969 Jaguar E-Type roadster

The F-Pace is "the latest expression of Jaguar's passion" Callum said when the car was unveiled this week at the LA Auto Show.

"It's not just a Jaguar you want," he added, "it's a Jaguar you need."

Hubba.

"Even your kids will think it's cool," Callum quipped, wryly taking aim at a market that Jaguar has regrettably left untouched during the SUV revival of the past few years: parents who need to haul around offspring, gear, pets, and friends of offspring, with their gear and maybe even their pets.

Jaguar F Pace

For Jaguar's chief designer, the F-Pace and its equally new sibling in the Jag family, the XE sedan, a circle has been closed. He said in LA that 15 years ago he had set out to create a portfolio of vehicles for Jaguar that would be "modern, progressive, and elegant."

His deservedly immodest verdict on his track record over a decade and a half is that he and Jaguar have succeeded.

The F-Pace makes it tough to argue with that judgment, even given my reservations about the F-Type. If you ponder the vehicle, you can see how Callum retained the basic headlight-to-taillight line that defines the F-Type, a clean, smooth, almost dagger- or sword-like sweep. But for the F-Pace, he took that line and elevated it, providing the required sense of ruggedness below, through the crossover's raised heft. Balancing that is the elegant curve of the roofline.

This is preposterously beautiful truck. Compare it with the BMW X6 M, a car of similar scale but far more baffling aesthetics — an angry beast of a car, bulging and thrusting everywhere:

BMW X6 M

And unlike the SUVs in Jag's corporate stable, from Land Rover and Range Rover, the F-Pace eschews a utilitarian, boxy shape for tailoring that's sleek and sinuous. It looks quick, and it looks quick without too much effort.

It's competition, looks-wise, is mainly the Porsche Cayenne, but that groundbreaking luxury SUV is hampered by optics that have always made Porsches less lovely, by a long shot, than Jags. The bug-eyed front, though streamlined in recent decades, can never be fully renounced. Jags, by contrast, have in their DNA those signature swept-back headlight pods that much of the auto industry has copied.

So there you have it. If you want an SUV but have always hated how they look, the F-Pace has arrived to scratch your itch. And to scratch it beautifully.

Those massive balloons you see at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade are actually surprisingly small

Macys Day Parade 2014

The moment the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade finishes making its way down Central Park West, the hard-working design team is waiting at the finish line, ready to pack away an entire year's worth of work.

"As soon as a parade is over, it's like, 'OK, let's get these ready for the next parade, because we're on a clock here!" John Piper, VP of the Macy's Parade Studio, joked as we took a tour of the company's New Jersey warehouse earlier this month.

The famed balloon floats, which have come in the form of Big Bird, Spider-Man, Snoopy, and other notable characters, are arguably the most iconic part of the parade. The night before, thousands of New Yorkers go to the Upper West Side to watch them be inflated.

"It's become the largest non-event event in New York," Piper said.

Macys Day Parade prep 2014

But after their short time out in the wild, the balloons are deflated and taken back to the parade warehouse to spend the remainder of the year in a surprisingly small hamper.

Although some of the balloons are as tall as a five-story building, Piper's team dismantles them with ease.

"That’s the easy part! You take the helium out of them, and you roll them up," Piper said.

The hampers are put onto a rack in the warehouse, where they wait to be prepared for the following year's parade.

Macys Day Parade 8751This year, the team is debuting four brand-new balloons, all of which were hand-painted with care at the Macy's Parade Studio.

'Meditations' by Marcus Aurelius

As you become an adult, you realize that there will never be a time in your life where everything is just as you hoped it would be.

"Meditations" is a collection of personal writings on maintaining mental toughness from the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, who ruled from 161 to 180 and became remembered as one of the great "philosopher kings."

As Gregory Hays notes in the introduction to his translation, Aurelius wrote his musings on resilience and leadership in a "dark and stressful period" in the last decade of his life.

The emperor's version of Stoic philosophy has remained relevant for 1,800 years because it offers timeless advice for gaining control of one's emotions and progressing past all obstacles in one's path.

'The Myth of Sisyphus and Other Essays' by Albert Camus

We all have a reason to get out of bed in the morning, and we start to question that reason after entering the real world.

As "The Stranger" author Albert Camus sees it, all people find themselves in an irrational world struggling to find meaning for their lives where there is none.

His main message, however, is that just as the legend of Sisyphus tells of a god who was eternally punished by having to push a rock up a hill, only to have it fall down each time he reached the peak, we should embrace the drive for meaning and lead happy, fulfilling lives with a clear-eyed view of the world.

'Crime and Punishment' by Fyodor Dostoyevsky

Regardless of your personal philosophy, there will be times when the world pushes against you and you wonder why it's worth trying to better yourself and help others.

Fyodor Dostoyevsky's novel is not only a gripping story, but it's an argument against the nihilism that was popular among Russian intellectual circles in his time.

"Crime and Punishment" is the tale of a 23-year-old man named Raskolnikov who, acting on a nagging urge, murders two old women and then struggles with processing the act.

Dostoyevsky argues that rationalism taken to its extreme ignores the powerful bonds that connect humanity and give us responsibility over each other.

29 stunning photos of daily life on Malaysia's most remote islands, where 'sea gypsies' live miles away from civilization

malaysia250215 10831

Earlier this year, French photographer Réhahn Croquevielle took a trip to some of Malaysia's most remote islands in the hopes of documenting the lives of the Bajau, the "sea gypsies" who inhabit the area.

Located off the east coast of the Malaysian city of Sabah, the island of Borneo was Réhahn's jumping-off point — from there he visited eight small islands that are many miles removed from civilization.

Some tourists may know this area for its amazing dive sites, but Réhahn saw a completely different side: tiny villages made up of huts built on stilts in the middle of the ocean.

SEE ALSO: A photographer traveled to remote parts of Vietnam and took these incredible pictures

FOLLOW US: BI Travel is on Twitter!

Réhahn's journey to the islands was anything but easy. After a flight to Kuala Lampur, another three-hour flight to Tawau, and an hour-and-a-half bus ride to Semporna, Réhahn set out to find a local who would take him to the remote islands where the Bajau, or "sea gypsies," live.

This was harder than he thought. Tour agencies would only agree to take Réhahn to resorts, and most fishermen he encountered along the waterfront spoke no English. When he was lucky enough to find someone who did, the price they asked for the trip was extremely high.

After spending one night sleeping at the waterfront — a risky move, as there's a history of tourist kidnappings in the area — Réhahn finally met Karim, a Bajau who agreed to take Réhahn to the remote islands he was hoping to visit.

Oh, The Plaza Hotel's attic penthouse, we meet again.

The huge apartment at the top of one of the most famous hotels is again on the market — this time carrying a price tag of nearly $50 million. That's less than what the apartment was listed for in 2013 ($59 million), but a whole lot more than it was when it was purchased just a year prior to that ($26 million).

In 2008, Russian billionaire Andrei Vavilov sued the Plaza after he found that the unit had lower ceilings than he said he had been promised. He had purchased the penthouse sight-unseen for $53.5 million. The penthouse has had several owners since then.

A private elevator grants a secluded entrance to the triplex penthouse, which has incredible Central Park views and state-of-the-art home automation.

People in Japan are obsessed with a French holiday where you celebrate by bathing in a pool of wine

Wine Bathing Japan

While the French still produce and consume the most wine per capita, Japan is continuing to grow as one of the biggest wine markets in the world — and they're not afraid to show their passion for the beverage.

It's one thing to drink wine, but it's another altogether to have it poured freely into a pool, into your cupped hands, and over your head.

Nonetheless, that's just what happened at a hot-springs resort in the Japanese city of Hakone as revelers celebrated the wine-filled holiday Beaujolais Nouveau this year.

A spa called Hakone Kowakien Yunessun brought in people to bathe in its hot pools, which staff filled with a mixture of red wine and water. Guests drank freely, both from glasses and their bare hands.

The spa poured about 20 bottles of the special-edition wine for the celebration, divided between the tub and guests' glasses.

Wine Bathing Japan

What exactly is this crazy holiday they're celebrating?

Beaujolais Nouveau is an annual tradition that celebrates a red wine by the same name. It is a vins primeur, a type of wine sold the same year it's harvested. This specific type is especially rare, as it is only fermented for a few weeks, which fills the wine with a fresh and fruity taste. The Gamay grapes it's made from are hand-picked from Beaujolais, a famous wine-producing region of France.

At midnight on the third Thursday of every November, bottles of the wine go up for sale. The French have more than 100 festival celebrations across the country, sometimes even with fireworks — but it doesn't compare to the celebrations that go down in Japan.

Wine Bathing JapanIt seems that with their bathing, the Japanese have really made the special day their own.

Food And Wine reported that in 2014 Japan imported nearly 8 million bottles of the special edition Beaujolais Nouveau wine. America, on the other hand, only ordered about 2 million.

Wine Bathing Japan

"Bathing in wine is a rejuvenation treatment for the body," is the the mantra espoused on the spa’s website.

And maybe it's not so crazy — after all, Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, was said to have loved bathing in wine.
