The 5 most popular men's hairstyles right now, according to Pinterest

0
0

Fall is here and you need a new look — time to make an appointment with your barber.

But first you need some inspiration. For that, we asked image-sharing platform Pinterest to comb its user data and send us the most popular men's hairstyles right now. Check them out below.

1. THE SIDE-PART

george clooney

The traditional side-part is the No. 1 men's hairstyle on Pinterest. "The latest evolution of the side-part takes a bit more commitment than its Ivy League predecessor, as the stylist shaves in the side-part line," says Pinterest user researcher and personal stylist Larkin Brown.

However, while the shaved route is edgier, it limits styling options, so you might want to opt for the classic, swoopier side-part à la George Clooney.

2. THE FADE

Will Smith Men in Black 3 Premiere

With a fade, hair is kept longer at the top and clipped shorter down to the neckline. Brown says a true fade should be done with a buzzer and suggests tracking down an old-school barber.

Compared to last year, the fade has quadrupled in popularity on Pinterest. When you ask for one at the barbershop, make sure to specify whether you want a high or low fade. The former disappears higher on the head than the latter, which can go down to the temple and is sometimes called a Brooklyn fade.

3. THE UNDERCUT

Brad Pitt

A throwback to the '30s, celebrities like Brad Pitt are bringing the undercut back in a major way. It's like a fade, but with longer hair on top. Brown says the style follows fashion's movement toward gender fluidity. "What used to be a fashion-forward cut for men has transitioned into an edgy statement for women," she notes.

To get the look, ask your stylist for a tight fade on the sides with extra length left on top.

4. THE MAN BUN

Orlando Bloom

Love it or loathe it, the man bun is the fastest growing men's hairstyle on Pinterest. Brown says it has gone from a look for "men who just didn't care to cut their hair" to a deliberate hair statement.

When growing hair out for a man bun, keep it trimmed and healthy (read: no split ends). Position the actual bun slightly above or at the nape of the neck, rather than piled on top of your head.

5. THE QUIFF

David Beckham

Pinterest deems the quiff this year's up-and-comer — and if David Beckham is on board, so are we. According to Brown, "The quiff is kind of a grown-up faux hawk, and is becoming most popular with a windswept, messy twist."

For a textured look, tell your barber to stick with the scissors. Make sure to bring an inspiration image to ensure you get the cut you want.

These pickup lines have the highest success rates, according to the dating app Hinge

The hardest part of talking to someone you have finally matched with on dating apps like Hinge and Tinder is the dreaded opening line.

A lot of people talk about opening lines, whether by debating the best thing to say to get someone's attention or by taking screenshots of the most awkward ones.

But Hinge, a popular dating app that introduces users to friends of friends, says it has figured out the best lines to initiate conversation. The app, which raised a $12 million Series A round of funding last year, conducted a month-long study, analyzing data from its users.

"Every day, the Hinge team is asked if we know the secret to starting a great conversation that will actually lead somewhere," Karen Fein, Hinge's vice president of marketing, says. "Frankly, we didn't! Since it's our mission to help users move beyond the swipe, to connect over something interesting and to ultimately meet up — we decided to find out."

Here are some of Hinge's findings. If you take nothing else away from the company's results, just know that pretty much anything you say to a new match is better than a simple "hey."

SEE ALSO: Why women should give men a break about opening lines on Tinder

The same opening lines don't work on men and women.

To collect information on how Hinge's users respond (or don't respond) to opening lines, Hinge's data analysts and copywriters came up with 100 opening lines and then showed a selection of them to some of their users to see how they would respond.

Hinge says men are 98% more likely than women to respond to assertive, invitational messages, so ask him to get drinks or grab dinner. Women, on the other hand, are 40% more likely to respond to food-related opening lines.

Men have short attention spans.

Hinge says you should message men right away because their attention spans tend to be shorter. If you don't message a guy within six hours, the likelihood he will respond drops by 25%.

Women, Hinge finds, tend to be more patient. If you don't message her within six hours, the chance she'll respond drops by just 5%.

The best opening line to use depends on the age of the person you're talking to.

If you're talking to someone who is 18 to 23, Hinge suggests a "novelty" or surprising opener.

If you're trying to chat up someone who is 24 to 28, Hinge says to start a conversation based around lifestyle or activities, so ask about brunch preferences or what the person likes to do on a Sunday.

Those aged 29 to 34 in Hinge's study tend to respond more to more personal conversation starters. Ask them something about themselves!

If you'd like to talk to someone who is 35 or older, Hinge suggests conversation starters with pop-culture references.

Empire State Building, New York City, New York

If you're looking for spectacular views of New York City, user pmmeamuffin recommends heading to the Top of the Rock instead, where you'll get better views (including ones of the building itself), cheaper tickets, and a shorter wait time to get to the top.

"Pro tip: getting a cocktail at the Rainbow Room bar at 30 Rock is cheaper than paying the admission fee and you get the same view," wrote im_coolest.

The Louvre, Paris, France

The Louvre is a go-to museum for many because of "The Mona Lisa," but user blissed_and_gone notes that it's not the most interesting thing to see in the Louvre and that some of the lesser-known sections like the collection of Middle Eastern artifacts are a must-see.

Also check out the impressive "Jupiter Hurling Thunderbolts at the Vices" by Paolo Veronese, which sits beside "The Mona Lisa."

Walt Disney World, Orlando, Florida

According to user Invader_Zirk, the best time to visit Walt Disney World is in October. Thanks to schools having a fall break previously, the parks are emptier than normal with most children back at school.

There's also a Halloween party that takes place in the Magic Kingdom, a food and wine event at Epcot, and the weather is cooler.

10 surprising travel perks that probably come with your credit card

0
0

credit cards

Credit cards are complicated: they're riddled with fees and laced with jargon, but sometimes, those things are hiding perks.

Check your cards to potentially uncover some of the following travel benefits.

1. Concierge services

Some cards (like the World Elite MasterCard, American Express, and Visa Signature card) come with concierges — a number on the back that you can call to get help with travel planning, restaurant reservations or event tickets.

2. Emergency assistance

Similarly, if you get into any trouble some cards will have someone on-call to help 24/7 — be it medical or legal assistance. That said, only the help is free, not the actual service you need. Visa Signature, Visa TravelMoney, and all American Express cards offer this perk, for example.

3. Hotel upgrades and perks

Some cards, like the Visa Signature or anything co-branded with a hotel chain will get you hotel room upgrades when possible, complimentary Wi-Fi, even a later checkout.

4. Lounge access

Airport LoungeCredit cards like the Visa Black Card, Chase Ink Plus, Citi Prestige, and American Express Platinum either include free lounge access or a certain number of day passes a year.

5. Priority Boarding

This perk can often be found on most credit cards pandering to travelers, especially those co-branded by airlines. Most cards that charge an annual fee will also offer priority boarding.

6. Car rental insurance

A lot of cards come with this perk, but be advised that it's not generally bumper-to-bumper coverage, though they will cover whatever your primary car insurance won't. The Chase Sapphire Preferred Card is a safe bet.

7. Roadside assistance

A lot of cards can help you when you car breaks down, you've locked yourself out, you need a jumpstart, you need to be towed, or you need a tire changed. American Express has Roadside Assistance Anywhere, and some (not all) Visas offer Roadside Dispatch, though in some cases you'll have to pay a small fixed fee for the services rendered.

8. Travel insurance

A lot of credit cards offer travel insurance. Details obviously vary by credit card, but it's worth combing through the fine print in which those will inevitably be buried. Should anything happen during your trip  — luggage gets lost, flights are canceled or delayed — and you have to spend extra money because of it (on essential items or a hotel room for example), save your receipts because your credit card might cover those costs. Sometimes this perk is known as baggage delay and lost luggage reimbursement, but whatever the name, most travel related or co-banded cards will feature it.

9. Trip delay and cancellation coverage

Similarly, an estimated 15% of cards offer trip cancellation coverage, meaning that you could be reimbursed for nonrefundable flights should you have to cancel them. Discover cards will reimburse you up to $2,500, American Express will give you up to $250 to cover your meals and hotel if a trip is delayed, and the Chase Sapphire Preferred Visa will reimburse you up to $10,000 per trip for pre-paid, non-refundable travel expenses.

10. Avoiding ATM fees

Discover's Cash-Over for example lets you add up to $40 to a purchase and get it back as cash, helping you avoid costly trips to the ATM.

Yasik22

Yasik Smirnoff has been traveling for exactly three years and nine months.

In that time, the 21-year-old has visited to a total of 107 countries.

Smirnoff left his parent's home in Siberia when he was 15 years old to go study at university. Three years later, he was married, had started his own business, and was living in Hong Kong.

That's when Smirnoff started to ask himself what else was there in life? He had already achieved what people often perceive as success, but he wanted to build experiences and challenge himself.

After getting divorced, he decided to set out on a journey.

From fighting bulls in Mexico to living alone in the desert of Jordan, keep scrolling to see Smirnoff's adventures.

When Smirnoff set out on his journey, he was 18 years old, didn't have much experience with travel, and spoke only Russian and Chinese.

He now refers to himself as the "Ruso Loco," or the crazy Russian. There's no place he won't go or nothing he won't try. Here he is with locals on an island that lies 200 km from Australia.

Smirnoff stayed in a rural village near the Omo Valley in Ethiopia for 10 days living with the Bodi, an indigenous tribe. While there, he says he also — accidentally — swam in a lake with crocodiles, which he says was a terrifying experience.

In New York, boutique fitness studios like Soul Cycle and Barry's Bootcamp aren't just for staying in shape.

For millennial professionals and their colleagues, these trendy workouts are a healthy alternative to the afterwork happy hour or early breakfast meeting.

Dedicated to team fitness and re-imagined old-school recess games, Throwback Fitness is the newest addition to the scene.

Co-founders Ryan Wilke and Brian Gallagher left their desk jobs at an investment bank to open Throwback and teach three classes that mix full-body movements with competitive "playground" games.

Recently, I checked out their 45-minute Throwback class, where I rowed on an ergometer machine, threw Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle balls into a net, and listened to a lot of music from the early aughts.

Check out my experience below.

BEHOLD: The East Coast's craziest burgers have arrived in New York City

0

tommy up pyt burger

A new burger place has arrived in New York City, and it's definitely got Shake Shack beat on the creativity front.

With burgers that incorporate outlandish ingredients like chocolate-covered bacon, deep-fried beer, and spaghetti buns, PYT has been a Philadelphia favorite for years.

Its New York City location, which soft-opens on the Bowery next week, is PYT's first store outside of Philadelphia.

It's a slightly smaller storefront, with four tables and a counter designed in a kitschy, '80s-inspired style. What appears to be an arcade game in the back of the room is actually a secret door leading to a pizza place speakeasy called SRO, or Standing-Room Only. That restaurant is already open now.

As for PYT NYC's menu, there will be four main burgers, in addition to rotating experimental burgers and boozy shakes. Prices range from $9 to $13, though the specialty burgers may cost more.

Owner Tommy Up is all about trying new things. He and the rest of the PYT team will be scouring local markets and restaurants to find interesting ingredients to inspire new burgers.

"Is there anything I wouldn't try on a burger? Yeah, there are some things I wouldn't try," manager Igor Simic said to Business Insider. "I have a line I wouldn't cross. Tommy does not."

Business Insider got a preview of some of the crazy burgers Chef Kim Malcolm and the rest of the PYT team will be cooking up for New Yorkers starting at the end of the month. Keep reading to see what we thought.

THE PYT BURGER: First up, the classic. The most popular item at the Philly store, the PYT burger is a beef patty topped with cheddar cheese, bacon, lettuce, onions, and tomato, all slathered in PYT's mayo-based "awesome sauce."

This one was our personal favorite. The bun had a chewy, but light, texture. It was the signature sauce, however, that set it apart from your standard burger. It was slightly sweet and totally messy, and we'll admit that multiple napkins were needed.

THE CHEESESTEAK PRETZEL ROLL BURGER: The new PYT location may be in New York City, but Tommy and the rest of the PYT gang haven't forgotten their Philly roots. This monstrosity is a regular cheeseburger that has had an entire cheesesteak stuffed on top of it. It's then slathered in PYT sauce and served on a pretzel roll bun that's specially made by the Philly Pretzel Factory. The cheesesteak is served "whiz wit," which, in Philly speak, means that it has both onions and cheeze whiz.

Deloitte has an office building designed to engineer the perfect workday for every employee

0

The Edge interior

Most workers are all too familiar with how a seemingly trivial annoyance — the air conditioner blowing directly on your face, a neighboring coworker who cackles like a hyena — can make it impossible to be productive.

And while most of us are accustomed to sucking it up by donning a sweater or a pair of headphones, there's an office building in Amsterdam designed to be so comfortable that employees no longer face any of these obstacles to getting work done.

It's called "The Edge," and its main tenant is consulting firm Deloitte. Bloomberg recently published a feature on The Edge and explored the technology that makes it the greenest office building in the world — and potentially one of the smartest.

The Edge exterior

Here are some of the building's coolest features, highlighted by Bloomberg:

  • A smartphone app consults your schedule for the day and figures out what kind of workspace you'll need, be it a sitting desk, standing desk, meeting room, or so-called concentration room. No one has an assigned seat — the concept is called "hot desking."
  • When you pull into the garage, a camera analyzes a photo of your license plate to make sure it's really you, and then raises the gate. The app guides you to an available parking spot.

The Edge workspaces

  • Once you arrive at your workspace, the app adjusts the light and temperature settings based on your preferences, which it remembers.
  • The building is designed to feel just like the outdoors, through variations in heat and air currents. Every workspace is within 23 feet of a window, but you won't get distracted by the sounds of the nearby highway and trains, since the specially designed roof mutes the noise.

The Edge entrance

  • When it's time for a break, you can head to one of the coffee bars, equipped with espresso machines that remember how you take your coffee.
  • If you're staying late at night, you'll notice a small robot patrolling the grounds. If an alarm goes off, the robot's camera can identify the intruder or alert security that it was a false alarm.

Whether you think this supersmart design is creepy or awesome, we may be seeing a preview of our own future offices.

21 tips that will help you experience Oktoberfest like a local

0
0

OktoberfestI grew up in Munich, Germany, and I've been to Oktoberfest more times than I can count.

That means that I've also witnessed foreigners make plenty of cultural faux pas at the festival.

Here are 21 tips that will help you experience the world's largest beer festival like a local.

Know that it starts in September

Oktoberfest actually starts in September (September 19th to October 4th this year). The first version of the festival was in 1810, as a Royal Wedding celebration between Prince Ludwig (later King Ludwig I) and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen.

Call it the Wiesn — not Oktoberfest

Locals affectionately call Oktoberfest the Wiesn, which essentially translated to the meadow. The reason behind this is that it takes place on a giant meadow — the Theresienwiese.

If you don't have a reservation, get there very early

Tents open at 10am on weekdays and 9am on weekends. If you don't have a reservation, you need to get there much earlier to snag a table. On the first day of Oktoberfest locals will even line up as early as 6am, despite the gates not opening until 9am, and the first beer not being dispensed until noon.

Avoid visiting during the Italian weekend

Oktoberfest is three weekends long, but locals will try to avoid the second weekend, which is known locally as the "Italian weekend." Traditionally the second weekend sees Italian tourists arrive in the 10 thousands, often in RVs or with tents, making Oktoberfest especially packed and rowdy. In fact, local police and medics get enforcement from South Tyrol, a province in northern Italy, and radio DJs will translate notifications into Italian, and newspapers will print headlines in the language as a nod to them.

Dress appropriately

Oktoberfest women in dirndlsLocals will don their lederhosen and dirndls, and tourists are free to buy their own for the occasion, but try not to buy tacky ones that are shiny, or neon colored, have rhinestones on them, or hit above the knee, as these are frowned upon by locals. Whatever you wear (and know that the tents get super hot) make sure to have solid footwear to avoid ruining your shoes (and feet) with beer, broken glass, and by getting stomped on.

Women who choose to wear a dirndl should know that there is a special meaning behind where the bow is tied. Dirndls include an apron, and where the bow is tied is code for whether a girl is single or not. A knot on the left means that a girl is single, and possibly not averse to getting chatted up. A knot on the right means she is taken, so don't even try.

Share your table

Oktoberfest tableTables are communal, so don't try to claim a whole one for yourself (effectively impossible in a packed tent anyway) and feel free to sit with strangers. That said, always ask if the seats are taken before sitting down.

Make a Wiesenbekanntschaft

This special term is local for "Oktoberfest acquaintance" since making friends is pretty easy when sharing tables and guzzling liters of beer.

Order from a waitress/waiter unless you're standing

If you were lucky enough to snag a table, there's table service. But if you're standing, you can order directly from the windows by the kitchen.

Don't touch the waitresses

Oktoberfest waitress, beerNot even to get her attention. Their jobs are really stressful, and tensions run high — if you grab at a waitress, don't be surprised if she yells at you.

When ordering beer, ask for a mass — not a stein

All beer except for wheat beers will be served one way and one way only: in a liter mass. Don't ask for a liter, and don't ask for a stein (Germans don't call it that, it's a Bierkrug). Fun fact: mass means measure.

Hold a mass with one hand

Slide your hand through the handle and lift it that way. And yes, you may have a bruise at the bottom of your thumb the next day.

Toast with the bottom of the glass and say "prost!"

beerBavarians generally clink glasses at the bottom. Don't hit the other mass too hard, lest you lose some precious beer, and don't forget to say "prost" and make eye contact while toasting.

Never ever consolidate beer

As we learned from a real live German, consolidating beer is sacrilege. It's totally ok to throw out warm beer though. In fact, there's the (not entirely serious) three finger rule that states that foam should be about a three finger's width from the top down, followed by three fingers of beer you drink, and finally three fingers worth of beer that should be thrown out, because if you're drinking from a mass and thus a whole liter at a time, those last three fingers will be warm when you get to them.

Don't even think about stealing a mass as a souvenir

Apart from it being in bad taste, security at every exit is trained to search for liter sized bulges on your body, and will often fine you for theft.  Last year, people tried to steal 112,000 of them — save yourself the trouble and buy the collector's mug, which is for sale.

Bring cash

Some places take credit cards, but not all, and those that do might insist on a minimum. Germany is generally a country that runs on cash, so make your, and everyone else's, life easier by hitting up an ATM in advance.

Expect high prices

One mass of beer will cost you around $11. Don't say we didn't warn you.

You should also be prepared to pay a "deposit" for food and drinks. Thanks to the rampant theft of masses, you will have to pay a deposit ("Pfand") for the glass , which you will get back when you return it. It's usually around €2, and also applies to food, as you get real dishes and silverware.

Don't overdo it

Know that the only beer at Oktoberfest is beer brewed by Munich's six breweries — Augustiner, Hacker-Pschorr, Hofbräu München, Löwenbräu, Paulaner and Spaten-Franziskaner. These are all special Oktoberfest brews, and at 6% are a little stronger than what you might be used to.

Otherwise, you might end up at the Kotzwiese, what locals call "puke hill." This hill, located at the feet of the Bavaria statue, a giant statue overlooking the Theresienwiese, is where those who have had a little too much drag themselves for a nap, when they become known as "bierleichen," or beer corpses.

Don't be shocked when people publicly start snorting a white powder

Wiesn koks — which translates to Oktoberfest cocaine — is a popular Oktoberfest pick-me-up. While it looks like cocaine, is snorted like cocaine, and is called cocaine, it's really just a harmless mix of a sugar and menthol that's sold at Oktoberfest and totally legal.

Learn the songs

Tents feature live oompah bands, and every few minutes the whole tent, in unison, will sing "Ein Prosit," then count to three, and yell "G'suffa!" before taking a communal sip. Learning this will make you feel a lot more local. Click here for a video.

There are 14 main tents, each able to fit between 5,000 and 11,000 people, and each rocking a wholly different vibe — some tents are more family oriented, others more focused on the food, others again known for their high concetration of tourists. Figure out which tent is best for you before going.

Find the tents that stay open late if you want to keep drinking

While tents close at 11:30pm, and the last  beer is served an hour before closing, two tents are open until 1am: Käfers Wiesnschänke and the wine tent. That said, Munich has a thriving "aprés Wiesn" scene for post-Oktoberfest clubbing.

Faena House Penthouse

After a 17-month contract period, the most expensive home ever sold in Miami has finally closed — for a whopping $60 million. That's $10 million over the asking price of $50 million.

The 12,516-square-foot penthouse in the 18-story Faena Housecondominium tower sits on Miami Beach's widest stretch of white sand.

It was developed and built by Argentina's Faena Group and contains just 47 residences. But the penthouse is by far the most luxurious.

The glass-walled apartment has a five bedrooms, two custom kitchens, and exclusive access to a private elevator.

There's also a media room, great room, dressing room, and 70-foot infinity pool on the 9,900-square-foot, Brazilian-style terrace, known as an "Alero."

All Faena House residents have access to its hotel-style amenities and services. These include valet and private concierge service, an in-house spa and fitness center with direct ocean views, a private beach club with full cabana service, and two pools.

The buyer of the $60 million penthouse is unknown, but a representative told the Wall Street Journal last year that they appreciated the "privacy afforded by the fact that the building is relatively small ... and that the penthouse has a rooftop pool."
