The 99 rules all men should live by

men suits hats

A while back, I wrote How To Be A Man with considerable help from my pal, the WSJ's John Carney. It was a fresh and thoughtful look at what it means to be a man today.

Unfortunately, all I have to do is look around me to see that it’s time for a refresher.

And because good advice never goes out of style, here are 99 rules for men to live by:

1. Measure yourself only against your previous self.

2. Never cancel dinner plans with a woman by text message.

3. Ignore the boos. They usually come from the cheap seats.

4. You don’t have to keep every secret, just the important ones.

5. If you’re staying more than one night, unpack.

6. A suntan is not bought, it’s earned.

7. Place-dropping is worse than-name dropping.

Disney Land Club 338. Don’t fill up on bread.

9. You don’t have to like baseball, but you should understand the concept of what a pitcher’s ERA means. Approach life similarly.

10. A glass of wine or two with lunch will not ruin your day.

11. Appreciate your parents. When they die, you become an orphan.

12. “Remember when” is the lowest form of conversation.

13. It’s okay to forgive, as long as you don’t forget.

14. Never make a scene

15. Buy a tuxedo before you are thirty. Stay that size.

17. When giving a toast, short and sweet is always best.

18. If you are wittier than you are handsome, avoid loud clubs.

19. Know when to ignore the camera.

20. Never take an ex back. She tried to do better and is settling with you.

21. Invest in great luggage.

22. Always carry cash.

23. Suck it up every now and then, especially for your family.

24. Never be the last one in the pool.

25. Don’t stare.

obama boehner26. Read more. It allows you to borrow someone else’s brain.

27. Stand up to bullies. You’ll only have to do it once

28. Admit it when you’re wrong, and forgive yourself for your mistakes.

29. Take more pictures. With a camera.

30. If you offer to help, don’t quit until the job is done.

31. Know at least one good joke.

32. There’s always another level. Just be content knowing that you are still better off than most who have ever lived.

33. When you marry someone, remember you marry their entire family.

34. It’s okay to go to the movies by yourself.

theater35. If you don’t understand, ask before it’s too late.

36. Yes, of course you have to buy her dinner.

37. Never ask the same question twice.

38. Be kind. Life is hard enough as it is.

39. Know your way around a kitchen.

40. Set Goals. Write them down.

41. Stop talking about where you went to college.

43. It’s okay to trade the possibility of your 80s and 90s for more guaranteed fun in your 20s and 30s.

44. Never park in front of a bar.

45. Play competitive sports for as long as you can.

46. Never date an ex of your friend.

47. If riding the bus doesn’t incentivize you to improve your station in life, nothing will.

48. When the bartender asks, you should already know what you want to drink.

49. If you perspire, wear an undershirt.

53. When in doubt, always kiss the girl.

54. Tip more than you should.

55. Always buy good shoes, sheets, and tires.

56. Put your cell phone away. You probably use it too often and at the wrong moments.

57. Eating out alone can be magnificent. Find a place where you can sit at the bar.

64. No selfies. Aspire to experience photo-worthy moments in the company of a wonderful companion.

65. Don’t split a check.

66. If you come from money, embrace it. We live in a world that rewards intelligence, creativity, and risk-taking.

67. When a bartender buys you a round, tip double.

68. The cliché is that having money is about not wasting time. But in reality, money is about facilitating spontaneity.

69. Be spontaneous.

79. When you admire the work of artists or writers, tell them. And spend money to acquire their work.

84. Always bring a bottle of something to the party.

85. Avoid that “last” whiskey. You’ve probably had enough.

86. Don’t use the word “closure” or ever expect it in real life.

87. Drink outdoors. And during the day. And sometimes by yourself.

88. Don’t linger in the doorway, in or out.

89. Date women outside your social set. You’ll be surprised.

90. If it’s got velvet ropes and lines, walk away unless you know someone.

97. Give up the dad bod. You’re not Leonardo DiCaprio.

99. You can get away with a lot more if you’re the one buying the drinks.

This spring marked a huge leap in craft beer production

craft beer brewers association

Production volumes of craft brews rose 16% between January and June this year when compared with the same period in 2014 from 10.6 million barrels to 12.2m.

“Industry growth is occurring in all regions and stemming from a mix of sources including various retail settings and a variety of unique brewery business models,” Bart Watson, chief economist of the Brewers Association, said in a statement.

As of 30 June there were 3,739 craft breweries operating in the US, 699 more than last year and another 1,755 are planned.

Nonetheless, with success has come a warning that quality mustn’t be allowed to suffer.

Watson continued: “The continued growth of small and independent brewers illustrates that additional market opportunities and demand are prevalent, although competition in the sector is certainly growing and the need for brewers to differentiate and produce world-class, high-quality beer is more important than ever.”

The continued growth of craft beer in the US and the rest of the world is also putting pressure on hop supplies, an issue currently being compounded by a heatwave in areas such as Washington State.

The best US ballparks for food

$

baseball game foodSkip the hot dogs and forget about peanuts and Cracker Jack—these days, America's best ballparks serve tacos, Korean fried chicken, Dungeness crab sandwiches, and so much more.

Now more than ever, a day in the bleachers is a great way to sample a city's favorite flavors: cans of Budweiser have been replaced with local craft brews, while star chefs and local restaurants have opened up shop to serve fans looking to catch the next home run.

Here's the scouting report on what to eat and drink this season at Major League Baseball stadiums across the nation, from Queens to San Diego.

SAFECO FIELD

safeco fieldWhere: Seattle, Washington

Safeco is considered by many to be the pinnacle of baseball stadium gastronomy. Park yourself in The ‘Pen, a dining hub dominated by local star chef and Mariners fan Ethan Stowell. This year’s foodie headliner is the new Dungeness crab sandwich ($16) from Way Back Crab Shack, which comes on sourdough bread with Old Bay and lemon aioli. Other options around the park include fresh sushi, pasta, and a bevy of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free dishes at The Natural.

What to Drink: Local microbrews and craft cocktails are plentiful, but for something different, try the cask ales at the Short Stop stand.

CITI FIELD

citi field tacosWhere: Queens, New York

When it comes to food, Citi Field easily defeats its subway series rival, Yankee Stadium. Chef Danny Meyer has had a heavy hand in the ballpark’s food program, with a Blue Smokeserving BBQ, a Shake Shack dishing Shackburgers, and an El Verano Taqueria stand serving, well, tacos. Meyer isn’t the only big name feeding Mets fans—there are meatballs from Pat LaFrieda, seafood from Dave Pasternack, and Pressed, a new grilled cheese restaurant helmed by Josh Capon.

What to Drink: Put down the Budweiser and try a local New York brew. The Empire State Craft beer stand has a huge selection of beer from Brooklyn Brewery to Upstate Brewing Company.

TARGET FIELD

target fieldWhere: Minneapolis, Minnesota

Another stadium that benefits from star chefs, Target Field is the hometown ballpark of Andrew Zimmern, so you know the eating’s good. The food celeb’s AZ Canteen crafts unexpected ballpark fare, such as the Korean fried chicken sandwich, served on a potato bun with a pineapple ring. Other vendors include James Beard–recognized Butcher and the Boar and Kramarczuk’s, plus, a state-fair-inspired booth celebrating all things fried on a stick.

What to Drink: AZ Canteen gets raves for its non-alcoholic mint and cucumber–infused lemonade, but if you need something a little stronger try a Summit Extra Pale Ale, brewed in the other Twin City, St. Paul.

PETCO PARK

Petco ParkWhere: San Diego, California

Steps from the restaurant-rich Gaslamp Quarter, Petco Park puts on a strong show when it comes to SoCal flavors. There are tacos, of course, some of the best coming out from local obsessions Lucha Libre Taco Shop and Rubio’s. There’s also an outpost of the city’s seafood master, Anthony’s Fish Grotto, and a tasty tri-tip steak sandwich from Seaside Market.

What to Drink: Craft beer rules here, including drafts from local brewpubs Ballast Point, Stone Brewing Co., and Pizza Port. If that’s not enough, visit the Craft Beers of San Diego stands, which only pour local suds.

AT&T PARK

AT&T Park friesWhere: San Francisco, California

While the Giants’ stadium food lineup is as winning as their World Series record, it’s the French fries that have everyone talking. You’ll find garlic fries at many ballparks, but AT&T Park is home to the granddaddy of seasoned frites—Gilroy Garlic Fries. They’re flavored with parsley and minced garlic from nearby Gilroy, California, which is known as “the garlic capital of the world.” You also have a choice of steamed mussels, sushi, Caribbean-style bibimbap, and more.

What to Drink: Sure it’s a ballgame, but when you’re this close to wine country, there’s no reason not to indulge. Local wines are available throughout the park at spots like Vintage 58 Wine Bar and the Farmer’s Market vendor.

Ferrari reveals the convertible version of its new 488 supercar

$

Ferrari 488 Spider

Ferrari is about to make a big change, retiring its 458 supercar and replacing it with a new model, the 488 GTB

The 458, like its predecessors, has a "naturally aspirated" V8 engine, situated behind the driver, a configuration known as a "mid-engine" design. The 488 keeps the mid-engine layout (of course) but adds turbocharging to the V8. For some Ferrari loyalists, this is heresy. But it's a sign of the times: the twin-turbo 488 generates more horsepower than the 458 and is less harsh on the environment.

Ferrari 488 Spider

Ferrari has begun deliveries of the 488, which the Italian carmaker says can do 0-60 mph in 3 seconds. The GT version of the 488 has now been joined by a Spider, with a convertible hardtop. Pricing wasn't announced, but the 488 GTB comes in at nearly $250,000, so the Spider should be comparable. Ferrari is showing the 488 Spider in a new color, "Blu Corsa."

Here's what Ferrari had to say about the car, in a statement:

Ferrari was the first manufacturer to introduce the RHT (Retractable Hard Top) on a car of this particular architecture. This solution ensures lower weight and better cockpit comfort compared to the classic fabric soft-top. Just like all previous spider versions of Ferrari’s models, this is a car that is aimed squarely at clients seeking open-air motoring pleasure in a high-performance sports car with an unmistakable Ferrari engine sound.

The official debut of the car will come at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

And for reference, here's the 488 GTB at its debut in New York earlier this year:

6 ways to spot cheap leather — even at high-end stores

$
0
0

Leather BagsThe qualities of good leather are well known. It's tough, it looks beautiful, and it ages with grace.

Poor leather, on the other hand, can pull the wool over your eyes — especially when it's beautifully displayed in an upscale store.

Here are a few tricks to help gauge the quality of the next leather item that catches your fancy.

Real leather will always smell like leather. Fake leather smells like plastic and chemically treated leather usually smells like chemicals. That real leather smell is always preferable. Plus, it's one of the key ways to tell leather qualities apart when they look roughly similar.

Look for labels marked "full-grain."Full-grain is the best quality of leather you can buy, but if the label says "made with full-grain leather," that might imply that part of the good is not full-grain. Meanwhile, "genuine" leather doesn't just mean that the product is made of real leather (which it is); it also means it is the lowest quality of all products made out of real leather.

Look at the edging of the leather. If it's blue, that means the tannery didn't allow the leather to properly tan, according to the blog Put This On. You'll notice the edges will sometimes be painted to hide the blemish — another sign that the piece you're looking at isn't the finest.

Look at the non-leather aspects of the product. An item of good leather quality will usually have quality stitching to match. Flaws in stitching, hardware, and lining can indicate inferior leather.

Pay attention to how it feels and looks. If the leather feels wrong (hard, plasticky, or thin), it probably is. Also look out for leather that appears machine-made or has a lot of blemishes.

The price of leather speaks volumes. This may seem obvious, but the cost of buying high quality leather is more or less fixed. Translation: that $50 leather bag probably wasn't made with the best quality leather.

Greece has 1,400 islands, though only 230 of them are inhabited.

And while everyone knows about Santorini and Mykonos, there are gorgeous lesser-known islands in Greece, too.

Here are 9 incredible Greek islands you may not have heard of, but should have on your radar.

Folegandros

Folegandros is almost a Greek cliché, full of beautiful whitewashed houses with bright blue doors lining cobblestoned streets on steep cliffs. Rugged and remote, without chain hotels or package tours — not even a bank or ATM — and accessible only by ferry, the volcanic island boasts solitude in spades, secluded beaches, and incredible sunsets.

Alonissos

Off the mainland, this island, whose surrounding waters are a designated marine park full of seals and dolphins, is a nature lover's dream. The spectacular spot's crystal clear waters and beautiful beaches are perfect for diving, and its lush flora and dense forests ideal for hikes. Since the rich landscape is chock full of indigenous herbs, it's also known for its traditional medicine, and home of the International Academy of Homeopathy.

Spetses

This bohemian paradise is more Côte d'Azur than Grecian island. Spetses was hot in the '60s, when it hosted Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor, and remains a swanky summer retreat for Athens' glitterati to this day, full of fancy hotels, mansions and yachts, and stylish boutiques. Aside from a handful of locally-owned cabs, the four-mile-long island has banned cars in town, giving it a refreshingly 19th-century vibe, with horse-drawn carriages being a common sight.

How I survived VidCon, a 3-day scream fest where teenage girls chase YouTube stars through the halls

I was once a teenager. I wrote down Ashlee Simpson lyrics in a journal, covered binders in inspirational quotes from Seventeen magazine, and practiced kissing on a poster of *NSYNC's Lance Bass. I remember being obsessed with every trivial detail of my favorite celebrities' lives.

But what I witnessed at VidCon — a 3-day convention that unites teens and tweens with their favorite online personalities — was unlike anything I've ever seen or experienced.

Fans, mostly girls, waited in line for more than an hour to snap a selfie with a star whose internet content they've memorized. They carried signs professing their love, and wore branded merchandise.

vidcon 2015 youtube teen girls 2147

When 18-year-old Vine star Matt Espinosa, who closely resembles Justin Bieber, attempted to walk the showroom floor in disguise, teen girls mobbed him upon figuring out who he was. Their screams were eardrum-piercing as they chased him and two or three large, male security guards out of the building.

vidcon 2015 youtube teen girls matt espinosa 36 skitch

In order to survive the three-day scream-fest, I picked up a few pointers from veterans — everyone from parents to YouTubers who I interviewed for this site. Here's what I learned.

Buy your food in bulk

vidcon 2015 youtube sandwich 2727

A food truck outside the convention center was selling a $14 brie grilled cheese sandwich. No thanks.

That night, I took a 5-minute Uber ride to Target where I stocked up on peanut butter and jelly supplies, fruit, and protein bars — all for $25.

Get organized with the VidCon app

vidcon 2015 mobile app

VidCon's mobile app allows you to flag your favorite events or experiences on the schedule, view a map of the convention center, take photos, and receive helpful, proximity-based notifications using beacon technology.

Since it's nearly impossible to get cell service inside the convention center, the app saved me from having to step outside to search VidCon's website and check my itinerary.

Go to Downtown Disney in the evening, where other adults can be found

downtown disney district anaheim california uva bar

Despite the family-friendly name, Anaheim's Downtown Disney District is a grownup's paradise. There are restaurants, bars, clothing stores, jewelers, bars, live performances, and more bars. Did we mention bars?

After putting in a 10-hour day in a PG-13-rated zone, it's nice to detox where you have to be 18 or older to enter.

Try the "Ready Aim Shoot" cocktail at Uva Bar.

Pack a portable phone charger

vidcon 2015 youtube mophie 2774

The Anaheim Convention Center is a barren wasteland when it comes to available outlets. And who wants to sit at a charging station when all the fun is on the showroom floor?

A portable charger for your phone, like a Mophie, can be a lifesaver.

The parents' lounge is your safe haven

vidcon 2015 youtube parents lounge 2315 3

Welcome to the Parents' Lounge, where I saw adults reading, napping, and getting work done while their kids were screaming their heads off somewhere.

Inside, there were bean bags, outlets galore, and a password-protected WiFi network for parents only.

In a sea of teens and tweens, at last, I found my people.

At VidCon, I saw parts of my childhood — the obsession and the joy — magnified by 100. The teenaged attendees' intensity surprised me, even as someone who wrote "Mrs. Jonathan Taylor Thomas" over and over in her notebooks.

Because YouTubers treat their channels like reality TV-style confessionals, fans know their favorite stars more intimately than ever before.

And fandom has become worship.

New York's JFK Airport is going to build a swanky new hotel inside its vacant TWA Terminal

TWA Flight Center Hotel Rendering

If you've ever wondered what JFK planned to do with its vacant, Jetson-looking Trans World Airlines (TWA) Terminal, here's your answer.

According to Curbed NYC, New York City governor Andrew Cuomo revealed plans to turn the terminal into the TWA Flight Center Hotel, complete with 505 rooms, anywhere between six and eight restaurants, 40,000 square feet of event space, and a 10,000 square-foot observation deck.

The plans are are the result of a public-private partnership between MCR Development, JetBlue, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, however the actual building of the hotel will be privately funded.

The project will cost $265 million and will begin next year. The opening date is set for 2018.

Tyler Morse, the CEO of MCR Development, said "the TWA Flight Center Hotel will celebrate and preserve Eero Saarinen's masterpiece, returning the landmark to its original glory and reopening it to the public."

The hotel won't completely take over the terminal though. An announcement released about the project says the hotel will stand behind the terminal and that it will be "designed to defer to the landmark."

Old Drawing of TWA Terminal

The project also includes plans to open a museum that will focus on the history of TWA, the Jet Age, and the Mid-century Modern design movement.

The terminal was originally built in 1962 by architect Eero Saarinen. According to Curbed, Saarinen was dead when the terminal was completed, making it the last project he ever worked on.

The terminal is truly a relic from the golden age of flying, when airline travel first became affordable to those outside of the upper class.

TWA Terminal Empty Hallway

The Los Angeles Times reported that the terminal has been closed for the past 14 years, due to the fact that it couldn't handle modern airplanes. The closing of the terminal also coincided with TWA going out of business, after it was bought by American Airlines in 2001.

In 1994 the terminal was officially named a New York City landmark. It then earned a spot in the National Register of Historic Places in 2005, and was last restored three years later in 2008.

Here are some photos of what the terminal looks like today.

The only 9 things you need to know about Chardonnay

$
0
0

Chardonnay

You’ll try any wine, anything except Chardonnay.

You don’t like Chardonnay, in fact, you hate it!

All the Chardonnays you’ve tried are horrible, dreadful, really just not very good.

That's not fair, I say. Chardonnay is the Queen of Grapes. Le Montrachet, a Burgundian Chardonnay, inspired Alexandre Dumas to declare that one must drink this wine "on bended knee, with head bared."

I’m not going to argue with Dumas — that sounds pretty worthwhile.

I will not give up on what I call “ABC” (Anything But Chardonnay) Wine Drinkers, for Chardonnay is one of the most important, elegant, and versatile white wine grapes in the world.

It may feel like shopping for jeans

The perfect fit is out there (somewhere!), and it takes a bit of work to find the right one, but when you do, oh isn’t life good!

Chardonnay (like jeans) can vary greatly, depending on the climate in which the grapes are grown and the stylistic choices made in the cellar. From crisp, steely Chablis, to rich, buttery California Chardonnay, there is wide variation, so much so that I am adamant I can find a Chardonnay for each ABC Wine Drinker.

(Full disclosure: Till now, most of my wine industry experience has been on the production side, at a winery which, at one point, offered five different Chardonnays. I have had some experience defending this variety …. a variety which really shouldn’t need my defense at all.)

Expressive and uniquely elegant

Chardonnay, like Pinot Noir, is a grape capable of communicating its origins. With its first home in Burgundy, Chardonnay is expressive of terroir, the unique features of the vineyard or village in which the wine is produced. Chardonnay is uniquely elegant (hence, the Dumas quote), producing heavenly wines in Burgundy and the premier sparkling Blanc de Blancs in Champagne.

From France, Chardonnay has spread and is now grown around the world: Italy, United States, Chile, South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia, to name a few.

Climate makes a difference

ChardonnaySo, my ABC friend, there is a world of Chardonnay to explore, literally. Climate strongly influences the character of the wine, and its effects are readily apparent in Chardonnay. Depending on where the grapes are grown, Chardonnay exhibits flavors ranging from tart lemon and apple to ripe, tropical pineapple.

When produced in cooler climates, Chardonnay leans toward the former. Cool temperatures preserve the grape’s natural acidity. Flavors are reminiscent of citrus and apple, sometimes peach, often floral. In these regions, Chardonnay reflects the nature of the soil on which it was grown, with hints of minerality or chalk. Crisp and refreshing, these wines are elegant and perfectly food-friendly. You’ve got to eat, so why not pair your meal with a glass of wine?

In warmer climates, Chardonnay leans ripe and tropical - pineapple (fresh, canned or roasted - can you tell the difference?), guava, mango. Oh hey, it’s a luau in my glass! These Chardonnays tend to be richer and have a rounder mouthfeel.

Barrel or tank?

You may have heard the terms “oaked” and “unoaked” to described wine. Sounds a bit jargon-y, so I’ll clear that up ASAP.

Oaked - the wine has seen some time in oak barrel

Unoaked - the wine has NOT seen any time in oak barrel

Chardonnay, in many parts of the world, is “oaked.” A winemaker may elect to use barrels for a number of reasons, not least of which may be to add richness and impart length on the palate.

The winemaker doesn’t get away easy. There are even more decisions to make once it has been decided that barrels are to be used. If you are a real wine geek you may want to start learning about barrels and the regions which produce them and why the wood is different… maybe another time. For now, stick to why barrel choice is important, specifically as it relates to Chardonnay.

First, American or French oak? American oak generally has a stronger character, whereas French oak is more delicate. The winemaker also considers whether or not the barrel has been used before. I use the analogy of a teabag (and I’ve used this analogy many times so please bear with me if you’ve talked to me before about this before). You can reuse a tea bag so many times until it runs out of flavor and you’re left drinking hot water that doesn’t taste like much. Same with barrels, kind of. You can use a barrel until it starts leaking or breaks. The more vintages of wine go in and out of that barrel, the less flavor the barrel will impart on the wine. Such “neutral” barrels provide a vessel in which the wine matures without taking on flavors characteristic of oak.

There is no one “right” answer here. You may think the winemaker made the “wrong” decision. Everyone’s palate is different. Also consider, a richer, powerful Chardonnay from a warm climate may stand up to the stronger flavors of American oak. A producer in a cool climate may opt for used French oak barrels to round out the wine without overpowering delicate fruit notes or detracting from minerality. A winemaker may use a combination of barrels, or even a combination of barrels and stainless steel tanks (as in Le P’tit Paysan) to make a complex Chardonnay with just the right balance. There’s an art to winemaking, and this is one of those times when the artistry and the experience of the winemaker shows.

So, will "oaked" Chardonnay taste like trees?

ChardonnayTime out: Next time you taste a Chardonnay, take a minute, stop, and think about what you’re tasting - is that vanilla? Baking spices, like cinnamon and nutmeg (as in Migration Chardonnay)? Butterscotch? Such flavors originate from the barrel in which the Chardonnay was aged, not the grape itself. If you don’t like these notes in your wine, please don’t blame the grape - Chardonnay is innocent here. If you want, you can blame the oak tree and the cooper.

Some Chardonnays are fermented in tank and don’t see wood at all. Light and bright, these wines often display crisp acidity and beautiful citrus notes. Refreshing and perfectly suited to lighter fare and fish, these are great for al fresco dining in the summer. I’ve sampled an unoaked Chardonnay like VRAC in store and had not a few visitors remark “Is this really Chardonnay?” Yes, folks, it really is.

And I almost forgot: concrete

Now, a curveball for you: concrete. Yes, concrete. Winemakers employ concrete tanks for the same reason as they would oak barrels - controlling oxidation, imparting richness, and lengthening the finish. While concrete tanks are able to produce similar results as oak, they do not impart the same tannins or flavors as oak barrels will. An example of this is the 2013 Pattes Loup Chablis.

A secondary fermentation with primary impact

After yeast eat up all the sugars and convert them to alcohol, you may think the story’s over.

Sometimes. Not always. The wine may be put through a secondary fermentation, called Malolactic Fermentation. Oh no, scary words that remind you of high school science. It’s also commonly referred to as MLF - much easier. This “fermentation” is different from the first. You don’t get more alcohol; you simply change one acid to another.

Wine starts off rich in malic acid, a very tart acid. In fact, this is the acid that gives the tartness to green apples. (Malic sounds like Malus, the scientific name for the genus of apple.) During MLF, bacteria digest malic acid, producing lactic acid.

What do you think lactic sounds like?

During MLF, acidity is reduced, or softened, producing a rounder, creamier mouthfeel. This is where your buttery notes come in. A winemaker may allow MLF to continue to completion, or to stop it somewhere in the middle, when he or she tastes an incredible balance (Folie a Deux comes to mind). Some winemakers do not allow any MLF (as in the case of Xanadu Next of Kin from Australia).

What pairs best with Chardonnay?

That depends on the style, and, as you’ve seen, there’s a wide, wide range of styles. Overall, I’d say seafood, definitely. Richer, more powerful Chardonnays complement lobster and salmon whereas lighter styles pair well with scallops and shrimp. I also love Chardonnay with falafel.

Are Chardonnays age-worthy?

Yes and no, depending on the style, region, vintage and producer. (This is the case with many varieties.) Great white Burgundies like Chassagne-Montrachet age gracefully in the cellar. There are even some Chardonnays, particularly Chablis, that we recommend decanting! Flavorful Chardonnays with rich acidity evolve beautifully in the bottle.

So, my ABC wine lover, are you ready to give Chardonnay another chance?

The 5 best under-the-radar beaches in the US

$
0
0

Trips to the beach are standard fare for most summer travelers, but crowded stretches of sand can make vacations more of a pain than a pleasure. Some beaches offer a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle and allow visitors to escape the crowds at more popular destinations.

From an isolated nature retreat nestled along Virgina’s Outer Banks to a picturesque coastal village with towering seawalls in Washington, these beaches prove that bigger doesn’t necessarily mean better—and that getting away doesn’t need to be a headache.

Here are our picks for America’s best under-the-radar beaches.

Carova Beach

Carova beachWhere: North Carolina

It doesn’t get much more secluded than North Carolina’s Carova Beach. Tucked away in the Outer Banks, the beach is only accessible by boat or with four-wheel drive, as the area does not have paved roads. Visitors can enjoy 11 miles of tranquil shoreline and hunt for shells on pristine stretches of sand. If you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of wild mustangs; the horses roam freely by the ocean and through Carova’s small residential neighborhoods.

Where to Stay: There are no hotels, motels, or condos in Carova, so visitors typically book vacation rental homes. Properties are rented on a weekly basis, but some last-minute reservations are accepted

Insider Tip: On a cloudy day, consider taking an excursion to nearby Corolla and Duck. The small beach towns boast upscale shopping and restaurants, and Corolla is home to a popular lighthouse that overlooks the ocean.

Roque Bluffs

Roque BluffsWhere: Maine

Rustic scenery and sprawling landscapes make Roque Bluffs one of the best little-known beach destinations. Visitors can explore 274 acres of coastal scenery, including a picturesque, half-mile pebbled beach. Take a dip in Simpson Pond, a popular watering hole, or hike along the beach’s rocky cliffs. Nature lovers will enjoy the area’s diverse wildlife, as the beach is home to a variety of birds and plant species.

Where to Stay: Roque Bluffs does not offer hotels or motels, and most visitors rent a cottage or vacation home for their stay. Sea Spray Cottages overlook Kennebec Bay and features spacious interiors and comfortable accommodations.

Insider Tip: Explore Simpson Pond and Englishman Bay by canoe or kayak. Visitors can paddle out and take in the panoramic scenery or cast their fishing lines during the spring and summer to catch trout.

Enderts Beach

Enderts beachWhere: California

For ultimate seclusion, take a trip to Enderts Beach. Hidden away in Redwood National Park, the beach features 37 miles of coastline surrounded by towering, 350-foot evergreen trees. Enderts is not the most photogenic beach; lost driftwood and tidal marshes create a decidedly rustic atmosphere. But dramatic coastlines and peaceful surroundings give the area an appeal all its own. Hike to the 500-foot overlook off Enderts Beach Trail for unparalleled views of the forest and ocean, or settle down near the coast with an afternoon picnic.

Where to Stay: For easy beach access, consider booking a room at a nearby hotel. The Best Western Northwoods Inn and Crescent Beach Motel offer reasonably priced rooms and oceanfront views.

Insider Tip: Visit Enderts in the early spring or winter months to watch migrating whales along the beach’s Pacific waters.

Dry Tortugas

 Dry TortugasWhere: Florida

Only accessible by boat or plane, Dry Tortugas offers a peaceful getaway from the mainland’s hustle and bustle. The park is located 70 miles off the shore of Key West, and consists of seven small islands and a sprawling coral reef. History buffs can explore Fort Jefferson, a nineteenth-century building that once held political prisoners. For epic snorkeling and diving, head to offshore coral heads. The colorful reefs are home to brain coral, swaying sea fans, and tropical fish and include sandy spots to rest and take in the sun.

Where to Stay: The best way to enjoy all that Dry Tortugas has to offer is by reserving an overnight camping spot. Visitors can explore the beaches at their leisure and take in the surroundings from dawn to dusk. But come prepared—there’s no freshwater supply on the island, and you must carry off whatever you bring to the beach.

Insider Tip: Bird lovers will enjoy Dry Tortugas’ extensive nesting sites. The park boasts nearly 300 species of birds and more than 100,000 nesting sooty terns. Make sure to stop by Bush Key during the winter months, as the site is closed to foot traffic during nesting season.

Sandbridge Beach

Sandbridge BeachWhere: Virginia

Most beach goers have heard of  Virginia Beach, but few are familiar with its tiny neighbor to the south. Located 15 miles from the resort area, Sandbridge features pristine dunes and secluded beaches away from the Virginia Beach crowds. Visitors can explore the marshes and open waters of Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge or kayak and hike through False Cape State Park.

Where to Stay: Visitors won’t find large resorts or hotels in Sandbridge, as larger properties are concentrated north of the beach. Consider renting a beach house or condo for cozy lodgings and easy access to the water.

Insider Tip: One of the best ways to explore Sandbridge and the surrounding area is by bike. Pedal through the neighboring wildlife refuge for up-close looks at native plants and animals, or take a day trip to the state park for picnicking and water sports.

Newly discovered Dr. Seuss book published today

Books Dr Seuss_MillHarper Lee's "Go Set a Watchman" isn't the only book out this summer that reveals another look at beloved characters.

Released Tuesday, "What Pet Should I Get?" by Dr. Seuss features the same siblings as "One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish." They ponder what kind of animal to acquire, but the end leaves readers guessing.

Seuss' real name was Theodor Geisel. He wrote and illustrated more than 40 children's books in his lifetime. His wife found the text and illustrations for the new book soon after his death in 1991, but they were set aside and only rediscovered in 2013.

A Seussian expert at Geisel's alma mater, Dartmouth College, believes the new book inspired "One Fish Two Fish," which is full of fanciful animals.

Oculus Rift is letting travelers experience destinations in a whole new way before they visit

thomas cookOculus Rift, the virtual reality company that Facebook bought for $2 billion last year, has become the next new advancement in technology, giving us the chance to experience virtual reality in areas we may have never imagined.

In the last few years, the technology has begun transforming the ways in which we can experience gaming, entertainment, science, and now, travel.

Numerous travel companies are using the technology to inspire people to travel by creating virtual tours that let them experience the destinations before they actually visit.

Marriott Hotels capitalized on using the Oculus Rift technology through its "Teleporter," a phone booth-like structure combining the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset, wireless headphones, and 4-D sensory elements to offer virtual reality tours of destinations. Launched in 2013, the Teleporter takes users through two different tours: Hawaii's Wai'anapanapa Black Sand Beach in Maui and London's skyscraping Tower 42

Marriott Hotels User Testing

What Marriott has done that makes the experience all the more lifelike is add in 4-D sensory elements so that you're not only getting the look of the destination, you're also getting its smells and sounds. So when you're transported to the beach in Hawaii, you can feel the mist of the ocean spray, smell the saltwater, experience the sensation of warm sun on your skin, and even feel waves lapping against your legs.

Hawaii Shoot BTS 1.JPG

In the London tour, the floor tilts up to push you forward, giving you the sensation that you're actually standing 42 floors up in the air. You can feel the wind whipping through your hair and hear the sounds of traffic from below.

"One of the first things people say after seeing these destinations through the technology is, 'I want to go there,'" said Michael Dail,  Vice President of Global Brand Marketing at Marriott. "It really stimulates the reasons and the passions that people have for traveling because it's so immersive and visual."

See what it's like to experience Marriott's Teleporter:

Marriott is not the only travel company using Oculus Rift, though. Tourism boards, tour operators, and cruise ship companies are also jumping on board, creating virtual tours to entice travelers.

Destination BC, the tourism board for the Canadian province of British Columbia, started using the technology early on to let tourists tour the province with a 360-degree video operated by Oculus Rift. Viewers are virtually transported to the Great Bear Rainforest, where they can see barking sea lions, clear waters of the Pacific Ocean, waterfalls cascading in the distance, and mountainside trails.

Azamara Cruises launched Azamara 3DI, a virtual reality tour of its ships and some highlights of activities in its port cities, including cruising through the locks of the Panama Canal, zip lining through a rainforest in Costa Rica, and taking a horse-and-carriage ride through Cartagena, Colombia.

British tour operator, Thomas Cook, launched a range of virtual reality tours in 2014, testing them out in their concept store in Kent and rolling them out to stores across Europe for trial runs. There were New York experiences where customers were taken on helicopter tours of the city, drives around Times Square, viewings from the top of Rockefeller Center, a boat tour around the Statue of Liberty, and hotel tours across destinations like Greece and Egypt.

By allowing travelers to virtually visit destinations, Oculus Rift is allowing people to access places of interest in an entirely new way.

It's nearly impossible to tell that these stunning landscapes are made entirely of food

Through his work, photographer Carl Warner says he has one major goal: to "make people smile." And with landscapes made of lollipops, peppermints, and gumdrops, his dream-like images do just that.

A trained still-life photographer, Warner's career in advertising photography gave him the skills to create "Foodscapes," a series of images made entirely of food replicating classic landscape photography. While at first making these images was simply a personal project, Warner's dedication to the craft brought him media attention in 2008, and two years later, he landed a book deal, resulting in "Food Landscapes."

Look ahead at these surreal, non-traditional landscapes, and learn the technique behind Warner's masterpieces.

Foodscapes are created in Warner's London studio. There he builds the scenes atop a large triangular table that is 12 feet across, and nine feet deep.

Every Foodscape scene begins as a sketch drawn by Warner. This sketch serves as the "blueprint" for the final finished product.

Warner takes his time on the renderings. "I tend to draw a very conventional landscape using classic compositional techniques," he says.

The one item every beer enthusiast should own

In case you’re unfamiliar with the term, a growler is an airtight vessel that’s used for transporting beer from one place to another without compromising its quality.

Typically, the vessel is made of glass, ceramic, or stainless steel, but you’ll be best served choosing a stainless steel container if you plan to use it for tailgating, camping, or some other activity that involves drinking on-the-go. Durability aside, its composition will also help insulate your beer, ensuring it stays cold longer.

The Asubo Stainless Steel Beer Growler 2 Go (pictured here) has a 64-ounce capacity that’s ideal for storing homebrews and draft beers. The swing-top lid slows down the oxidization process of carbonated beverages, so you’re able to enjoy a favorite draught from your local bar and brewery days later, without the stale taste.

Go ahead and transfer bottled beers into it too: The compactness of the growler is a lot more travel-friendly than the standard six-pack.

Donald Trump just sold a Park Avenue penthouse he never lived in for $21 million

Presidential-hopeful Donald Trump just unloaded a penthouse he never actually lived in for a cool $21 million.

Seeing as Trump never settled in here, the Trump Park Avenue unit looks nothing like his gold-encrusted pad at Trump Tower.

Actually, it looks more like Ivanka Trump's apartment, also located at Trump Park Avenue.

The penthouse has been owned by Trump since he purchased the building (a hotel which he converted to a luxury condo building) in 2001.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the home was bought by a US couple with an international real estate portfolio.

The fact that Trump never lived in the apartment explains its understated décor. His primary residence at Trump Tower is drenched in gold, marble, and crystals.

The clean white furniture, well-chosen art, and accent pieces have Ivanka's good taste written all over them. Her own apartment in the building has a similar style of décor.

The 6,200-square-foot penthouse — accessible via a private elevator — sits on the 24th floor of the 32-story Trump Park Avenue. It was previously listed at $24.995 million.

11 clothing and style hacks for the modern gentleman

$

David Beckham

Every day you button your clothes, roll up your shirt sleeves, and pick out your shoes. But what if I told you the way you go about doing these things is all wrong (or at the very least ill-informed)?

From packing your suit the wrinkle-free way to keeping your rolled-up sleeves from unfurling, heed these 11 clothing and style hacks that will save you time, money, and, in some cases, embarrassment.

1. Roll your shirt sleeves the right way.

Instead of rolling the cuff slowly up your sleeve, flip the cuff back and pull it to just below your elbow. Then take the bottom (inside-out portion) and fold it up so it traps and covers the bottom cuff. Your shirt sleeves won’t unroll again.

2. Pack a suit without getting it wrinkled.

Simply wrap the suit in tissue paper and place it in a bag to keep it in good condition.

3. Learn the "sometimes, always, never" rule of jacket buttons.

The top button should sometimes be buttoned (stylistic decision), the middle button should always be buttoned (it pulls the jacket together and is flattering), and the last button should never be buttoned (it messes up the tailoring and flare of the jacket).

4. Match your dress shoes and suits.

Follow this simple chart to learn what colors and styles are best. If you're wondering which shoes to wear with shorts and chinos, click here.

5. When possible, always try to buy full-grain leather goods.

It's the highest-quality leather money can buy, it will last forever, and it’s far superior to top-grain and genuine leather.

6. Invest in quality shoe trees.

A good pair of shoe trees will maintain the shape of your nice work shoes, prevent the leather from warping or cracking, and absorb any excess moisture from your shoes so they don’t rot from the inside out. Bespoke shoe trees are the best for your expensive shoes.

lasted shoe tree prada

7. Hang your suits and dress shirts on cedar wood hangers.

The cedar acts as a repellent for moths and absorbs moisture. And unlike wire hangers, these thicker hangers will not damage or stretch out clothing

8. Fold your sweaters instead of hanging them.

Even lightweight sweaters stretch out if they're on a hanger for too long. It's better to fold sweaters in your wardrobe and hang dress shirts and T-shirts instead.

9. Go sockless without causing a stink.

There's an easy way to cheat that oh-so-popular sockless look.Loafer socks are undetectable, but effective at soaking up sweat so there's no funky odor.

10. Use leather soap and oil to preserve your shoes.

After a tough winter, make sure to take care of your nice shoes. It will dramatically increase their lifespan and ensure your footwear investment pays dividends for years to come.

11. Let your shoes breath between wears.

You shouldn't just slip on the same trusty pair of dress shoes day after day. Why? Because if you let them rest they'll stay alive that much longer.

A serial entrepreneur has created a 'tiny home' just for the super-rich

Cocoon 9

Tiny houses aren't just for minimalist couples looking to downsize — they're for rich Hamptonites, too.

At least, they will be if retail entrepreneur Christopher Burch's latest venture, Cocoon9, catches on.

Along with his lifelong friend Edwin Mahoney, Burch is elevating the way we think about prefab, tiny houses.

“The goal was to create a thoughtfully designed product that is simple and elegant and can be used for many different functionalities,” he told the New York Times.

Basically, he's marketing three modular units (from 160 to 480 square feet) as "plug and play" pool houses, guest houses, or other additional structures to sit alongside existing luxury homes. The smallest, 160-square-foot unit starts at $75,000.

Burch told the Times that the houses — of which he has sold one so far — are delivered within 16 weeks of the order date, compared to his competitors, whom he claims take 12 to 16 months to deliver.

Cocoon 9

The three existing floorplans — the Cocoon Cabin, Cocoon Studio, and Cocoon Lite — represent a combined effort by Burch's design team in Shanghai and Mahoney's home building company.

The Studio and Cabin styles check in at 480 square feet and start at $225,000; premium versions of these designs are available for $20,000 and $50,000 more, respectively.

But buying the units is not the only cost involved in installing one of these tiny prefab houses. You must first build a foundation on which it will sit, secure permits for its installation, rent a crane, set up utilities, and pay for shipping, all of which could cost up to $85,000, according to the New York Times.

The structures come complete with cabinetry, concealed shelving, a kitchenette, a bathroom, and a Murphy bed.

Cocoon 9

Burch told the Times that he started playing with the idea for Cocoon9 about four years ago, which was around the time he launched C. Wonder, a now-shuttered lifestyle brand that quickly rose to fame and suddenly crashed into bankruptcy this January. Burch is the ex-husband of designer Tory Burch and was a co-founder of her $3.3 billion fashion brand.

Beyond residential use, Burch thinks the units could be used by hotel developers wishing to create eco-friendly beachside resorts. Each design features a steel composition that can withstand winds up to 150 mph, insulated walls to cut down on heat and a/c use, and the use of LED lighting and non-toxic materials.

Cocoon 9

The company currently has a prototype of the Studio model at the Mecox Gardens home goods store in the Hamptons. It's actually the one and only Cocoon unit that's spoken for. Next it will travel to New Canaan, Connecticut to serve as a pool house and home office for financier Spencer Grimes and his wife Lindsay.
