These Are The Best And Worst Things To Buy In November

holiday shopping lights mall

We finally made it to http://dealnews.com/features/The-Best-and-Worst-Things-to-Buy-in-November/513376.html, one of the happiest months for budget-conscious shopping.

Many categories hit their lowest points during this month, usually around Black Friday (not surprisingly). But let's not forget that the month is made up of 30 full days, not to mention the fact that daylight savings ends. (That gives us one more hour to shop!) That means there are deals to be had all month long, not just around the major shopping event.

Contrary to popular belief, however, November isn't the best time to buy everything. That said, many product categories will see great deals — there are just a few caveats.

Home Furniture Surprises with Strong Deals:

Many other media outlets will tell you that January is the best time to buy furniture, since manufacturers begin introducing new styles in February.

Our archives reflect that January is indeed a good month for bargains on home furniture, but November may be even stronger. Two years of data show that November featured the greatest volume of Editors' Choice offerings, as well as the most furniture deals in general. In fact, last year, we saw 39% more home furniture deals in November than we did in January 2011.

Expect to see discounted pieces from WalmartTargetKohl'sJCPenneySearsAmazonOverstock, and more. One caveat: January did offer a few more general furniture sales of note (like from Pier 1 Imports) than November.

Current Season Apparel, the Good and the Bad:

Last month we noted that winter season apparel items will likely see their greatest sales beginning in January.

However, last year, a number of apparel stores offered their best online coupons of the year in the weeks leading up to (and around) Black Friday, and most stacked with existing sales and markdowns.

Expect to see an abundance of "best of the year" coupons that take 20% to 40% off, with some reaching even higher discounts. (In fact, 57% of last year's Editors' Choice apparel coupons available during the week of Black Friday took a full 30% off or more.)

Tis Not Yet the Season for Toys:

With all the holiday shopping you'll likely be doing at the end of this month, you may start to get overly confident and think, "I can save on toys for the kids too!"

As we reported a few weeks ago, however, the best time to get the greatest discounts on toys for the holidays is during the 14 days leading up to Christmas.

Moreover, if you're considering buying a new game console for your kid, keep in mind that there are rumored new releases — finally! — from both Wii and Xbox next year, which should push down the retail prices of today's "current" systems (which are actually several years old

Fast food restaurants have a somewhat unsavory reputation for being bland and predictable. The decor and architecture usually fail to impress and fall somewhere along the lines of boring and boxy.

But some fast food giants are breaking the mold. Unusually-designed fast food restaurants have become a worldwide trend.

The MoMA Collection Now Includes Your Favorite Video Games

MoMA has acquired 14 video games to be installed at the Museum's Philip Johnson Galleries in March of next year. Among the old school games visitors will be able to play are Pac-Man, Tetris, and SimCity 2000.

MoMA also has a list of roughly 40 video games it plans to acquire, including Nintendo games that are currently in ongoing negotiations. The world-famous modern art museum plans to incorporate Snake, Asteroids, Donkey Kong, and Super Mario 64, in addition to an assortment of others within the next few years.

The selected games were chosen due to their impressive interactive design. Not only based on aesthetic qualities, but on the quality of the code, functions, and behavior — the rules, stimuli, and narrative of the games — as well.

Paola Antonelli, the Senior Curator of the Department of Architecture and Design at the MoMA, had this to say:

"In order to develop an even stronger curatorial stance, over the past year and a half we have sought the advice of scholars, digital conservation and legal experts, historians, and critics, all of whom helped us refine not only the criteria and the wish list, but also the issues of acquisition, display, and conservation of digital artifacts that are made even more complex by the games’ interactive nature. This acquisition allows the Museum to study, preserve, and exhibit video games as part of its Architecture and Design collection."

The museum also addressed the challenges of incorporating certain games into the exhibition. Older games with fragile original cartridges would be translated into newer, updated code for modern computers. Games that take hours to play would become an interactive demonstration to give the player a taste for the game. And games that take years and millions of people to manifest will be made into guided tours with players and designers leading visitors around the game space to help them realize the full extent and possibilities of the virtual world.

See the full list of 14 video games that will be included in March 2013 below, and read more about the collection and games MoMA is planning to incorporate on the museum website.

For the past three nights, a rainbow has appeared in the sky over lower Manhattan. The rainbow, an art installation by Yvette Mattern, is a tribute to the victims of Hurricane Sandy and is projected from the Standard Hotel across the parts of the city that were hardest hit by the storm.

We saw tons of New Yorkers snapping photos of the rainbow on their phones, mystified by the light show. This photo, which Tim Drivas shot from DUMBO, Brooklyn, is one of our favorites.

We just got back from the press days at the Los Angeles Auto Show, where nearly 50 new vehicles were introduced.

As usual, the auto makers on scene brought in models to make sure their cars were appreciated, or at least photographed.

In addition to accommodatingly posing for photos with the cars they represented, the so-called "booth babes" in Los Angeles were the ones pulling the covers off of the newly revealed rides.

Dodge's 2013 SRT Viper was accompanied by a model whose dress matched the car.

These two ladies in red pulled the cover off Toyota's new Rav4.

These Are The Best And Worst Things To Buy In December

Christmas market in germany, holiday, lights, gift guide

December is a month when you almost can't avoid shopping.

You may have skipped Black Friday — overwhelmed by the offers, hype, and crowds — but the holiday season is a different beast all together, with gifts from loved ones, friends, and people you barely know, coming at you from all angles.

Maintain lots of holiday cheer by shopping wisely with our December buying guide. We've pored over the extensive dealnews archives of sales, coupons, and daily deals from years past to guide you in your quest for the most savvy purchases in December.

Get Good Deals on Toys ... By Still Waiting

Finally, it's the best time to buy holiday toys! Almost.

In 2011, many of the year's top toys hit their lowest prices of the season in the two weeks before Christmas.

In fact, that middle week of December specifically saw a staggering number of Editors' Choice toy deals.

Keep in mind, however, that shopping mere days before Christmas is probably not wise; retailers realize last-minute shoppers are desperate and less able to effectively comparison shop, so prices often reflect that.

Put Off Buying a 2013 Wall Calendar

You may see some modest discounts this month and early in 2013 that will entice you to purchase a calendar, but the first significant sales we'll see on these items come at the end of January and beginning of February.

(You can of course see even bigger discounts the longer you put it off, but you actually want to use the calendar, right?)

Keep an Eye Out for Gift Card Freebies

A popular promotion throughout the month of December, especially amongst restaurants, is to offer a free gift card to shoppers who purchase one as a gift.

For example, last year California Pizza Kitchen offered a $40 gift card to anyone who purchased $100 or more in gift cards.

However, retailers are more like to offer a gift card with purchases that reach a certain threshold: L.L.Bean offered a free $10 gift card to any customer that spent $50 or more.

11 Health Gimmicks You Should Stop Wasting Money On

$

coconut-water

No matter how many times we're told otherwise, Americans' obsession with get-healthy-quick schemes will likely never die.

Too bad most of these fads aren't worth their weight in salt – or your hard-earned dollars.

We've put together a list of some of worst health trends that still persist today.

Coconut Water

Coconut water may be nature's version of Gatorade but some brands have already caught fire for over-hyping its nutrient content.

Vita Coco agreed to settle a $10 million class action lawsuit over an independent study that showed the drinks didn't pack near as many electrolytes as advertisements implied.

Some coconut water is also loaded with added sugar, which will do nothing to help your waistline. Instead, pick up your own young green coconuts on the cheap from an Asian produce market. Just crack them open with a cleaver and pop in a straw.

"All-Natural" Foods

Nearly 30 percent of Americans bought more natural foods in 2011, according to a Rodale study. But what are we really paying more for?

There's no clear cut regulation on what makes food "natural," which means just about any company can slap that label on its packages, add a fancy "green" design and jack up the price.

Says Andrew Schrage of MoneyCrashers: "Before buying any food that is touted as being “all natural,” take a look at the ingredient list before you check out. Keep in mind that butter and salt are indeed natural ingredients. So stocking up on natural foods may not achieve anything other than increasing your grocery bill."

Weight Loss Wardrobes

When it comes to ridiculous-looking toning shoes and clothing designed to help shed pounds faster, you might want to hold off.

Reebok's already paid $25 million to consumers for allegedly over-marketing its line of toning shoes' weight loss power. And the one study that seems to support the claim that tight-fitting threads help burn more calories only involved about 15 participants.

"I think there are much simpler and less expensive ways the average person can bump up calorie burn and build strength," says Shape.com's Liz Neporent. "For instance, interval training and hill work. These workouts certainly have the science behind them."

Hormone Injections

People really will do anything to shed pounds, even if it means injecting themselves with hormones made from another woman's placenta.

The FDA ordered companies to stop selling hCG (a protein made in the placenta and passed through pregnant woman's' urine) after it was used in conjunction with low-calorie diet regimens. A 40-day kit sells for $120 but the hormone's only been approved for use in fertility treatments.

Per the MayoClinic: "HCG is not approved for over-the-counter use, nor has it been proved to work for weight loss. Companies that sell over-the-counter HCG weight-loss products are breaking the law."

Detox Diets

Here's a trend that makes just about every nutritionists' blood boil: the idea that people can purge their bodies of toxins by consuming different variations of liquid diets.

From the cabbage soup plan to the infamous Beyonce "Master Cleanse", there's hardly any science to back them up, says Essential Nutrition for You's Rania Batayneh.

"What consumers need to know is that your body naturally detoxifies itself through our lungs, skin and kidneys," she said. "Sweat it out, breathe it out and eliminate. Eating a clean diet daily will give you the feeling you are looking forward to at the end of your depriving cleanse, so get started. Besides, cleanses are unnatural and typically based on eliminating food groups and or foods altogether."

Artificial Sweeteners

Splenda just rolled out a new version of its popular sweetener – this time with extra fiber – but the idea that consumers should pay more fake sugar that's been pumped with more fake ingredients is slightly irksome.

"Adding healthy components to unhealthy things just doesn’t make sense," says Batayneh. "What is 1 gram of fiber (or maybe 10 for those who over consumer artificial sweeteners) going to do for you when you should really be focusing on whole grains, beans, seeds, fruits and vegetables versus relying on your coffee for fiber? This small dose of fiber should not convince you to try it."

Gluten-free Diets

Batayneh calls this one of the worst weight loss myths out there and another attempt to play on the low-carb fad sparked by the Atkin's diet.

"A gluten-free diet does not necessarily mean a low-carb diet," she says. "A person who eats gluten-free can ingest plenty of carbohydrates from gluten-free breads, pastas, cereals, and baked goods as well as vegetables, fruits, beans, and legumes."

Gluten-free lifestyles have been proven to ease symptoms of Autism in children and, obviously, are vital to anyone with a gluten allergy. But "if you don’t have a medical reason for following a gluten-free diet, there’s probably no benefit,” says Tricia Thompson, R.D., founder of glutenfreedietitian.com.

Most Organic Produce

Whether or not there are added health benefits to eating organic produce, it's a common misconception that they somehow come packed with less calories than their pesticide-laden brethren.

Even federal guidelines on what's certified organic aren't all that stringent and plenty of regular produce isn't "dirty" enough to warrant paying top dollar (as much as 150% more) for organic versions anyway.

The Environmental Works Group has an excellent chart detailing the "dirty" and "clean" products we should worry about.

Snack Packs

Weight loss has much to do with portion control, but those helpful little 100-calorie pack snacks are nothing but a big budget suck.

"We have portion distortion in this nation and even though I like that (100-calorie packs) are pre-portioned, that can be a more expensive option," Batayneh says.

Instead, keep a measuring cup in your desk drawer to scoop out perfect portions of whatever you're munching on at work (almonds, trail mix, etc.) rather than paying more for packaging.

Acai Berries

There are literally no clinical studies that support claims that antioxidants in Acai berries will make you live longer, help you fly, smooth your crow's feet or anything else.

"We've had waves of costly 'super juices' in the marketplace that were nothing more than fruit juice," says clinical nutritionist Stella Metsovas. "Testing chemical properties in a laboratory is completely different once the product is pasteurized. There is no possibility of processing a super-fruit to compete with the natural form (i.e.: a handful of berries)."

The Acai berry's popularity in the U.S. spawned a new wave of consumer scams involving "free trial offers" for smoothies, juices and other products.

Diet Drinks

Not only will they destroy your teeth, but a recent study by the American Diabetes Association pretty much proved diet soda drinkers were packing on pounds, not shedding them.

Zero-calorie sodas have also been linked to a slew of nasty diseases, including diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

If you're looking to kick the habit, try weening yourself off slowly with fizzy substitutes like seltzer water or reducing your portion size bit by bit.

A family video catches the moment that eight-year-old Jillian Thomas is bitten by a dolphin during feeding time at SeaWorld in Orlando.

Jillian Thomas, 8, was feeding fish to dolphins in SeaWorld, Orlando, when one of the mammals grabbed her arm.

A video posted on YouTube by the girl's parents, shows the moment the dolphin lunges for a fish and nips her hand.

Jillian was left with three small puncture wounds to her hand after the incident on November 21.

In a message accompanying the video, her parents said that they wanted to "share this video so others can make an informed decision about whether or not the risks to yourself or your child are worth the experience.”

The girl's father, Jamie Thomas, told local media that he wanted to "put some pressure on SeaWorld to make some changes."

Why One Private Jet Charter Company Sees Its Future In Emerging Markets

$

0

thomas flohr vistajet

Private charter jet company VistaJet made headlines this week when it placed a $3.8 billion order for 56 planes from Bombardier and took out an option for 86 additional aircraft, making it the biggest deal in private business aviation history.

The sale doubles the size of VistaJet's fleet, putting dozens of Bombardier's top-of-the-line Global aircraft in the skies.

The magnitude of the sale is particularly impressive, considering the bad rap private jets received in the wake of the recession.

But VistaJet's growth story is as impressive. Founded in 2008 by German entrepreneur Thomas Flohr, the company had 25 percent revenue growth this year, following 22 percent revenue growth in 2011.

It's achieved that growth not from focusing on domestic clients, but from servicing clients in emerging markets where the financial crisis was less of a factor and where there is tremendous entrepreneurial growth, Flohr said at a lunch announcing the Bombardier deal this week.

In the past, when future entrepreneurs from emerging markets in Asia and Africa studied in the west, they stayed and built careers there. But now, those same entrepreneurs see tremendous opportunity in their home countries, and are more likely to return and build businesses where they came from, Flohr said.

At the same time, it's become less critical for businessmen in emerging markets to meet in a hub like London or New York, said Flohr, adding, "entrepreneurs are doing business directly, from China to Angola or from Nigeria to Saudi Arabia."

But because commercial airline infrastructure can be lacking in those countries, it's often impossible — or at least incredibly time consuming and expensive — for those businessmen to meet face to face.

That's where VistaJet came in, and where it has seen its service take off. The company's jets made 10,000 international flights in 2012, and have landed at 136 airstrips in Africa this year.

"We caught the megatrend early on," Flohr said.

The service isn't cheap; VistaJet planes, which fly anywhere in the world on 24 hours notice, cost $15,000 per hour. But considering the cost of commercial airfare from remote places, it can become a viable option, especially when companies are transporting multiple executives and paying for hotel rooms.

The deal with Bombardier is a sign that Flohr sees huge growth potential among businesses in emerging markets.

“Such customer success allows us to place this historic order and will enable us to base even more brand new aircraft in these dynamic growth markets," Florh said in a statement. "I am excited to serve these markets with an unparalleled product both locally and globally.”

elliot bisnow greg mauro summit

Summit Series is a popular, annual startup conference among a younger set of entrepreneurs who like to work hard and play hard.

It was founded in 2008 by four 20-somethings, and the first gathering had 19 people. Now it attracts hundreds of attendees. Events have been held in Mexico, on a Caribbean cruise ship, and in Squaw Valley, California.

The conference, which is usually three or four days, has a reputation for being an amazing networking experience, full of non-stop partying paired with an stellar guest list. Past attendees have included Richard Branson, Bill Clinton, and Russell Simmons.

Today, Summit Series announced a new home for their annual "conference" ragers: Powder Mountain. The founders raised roughly $40 million to buy the new 10,000 acre spot in Eden, Utah.

$40 million was just the price tag for the mountain, though. They'll have to raise even more to build on top of the land. Still, there's a lake, skiing, and even a giant bird nest that sits in a tree for humans.

"It's a new kind of neighborhood, where friends, family, and the leaders of today and tomorrow gather in an environment created to catalyze personal and collective growth," the founders write on their site.

Summit Series was founded in 2008 by four entrepreneurs: Elliot Bisnow, Brett Leve, Jeff Rosenthal and Jeremy Schwartz

It's an annual conference/party for business leaders and startup founders. You can think of it as Davos for the up-and-comers.

Events have been held in Utah, Mexico, DC, on a cruise ship to the Bahamas, and in Squaw Valley.
