Here's What 4-Year-Olds Have To Go Through To Get Into An Elite New York Kindergarten

Preschool Brooklyn

One of the most cutthroat application processes in the country takes place in Manhattan preschool classrooms, as 4-year-old students — and, to be honest, their parents — vie for a spot at one of the city's elite kindergartens.

To better understand how a school chooses its kindergarten class from the hundreds of families trying to get in each year, Business Insider spoke with Stephanie Sigal, a speech therapist who also helps potential kindergarteners prepare for their interviews. She helps them prepare for the two major tests students take to get into a kindergarten class— the ERB, which evaluates IQ and ability, and the new AABL, which tests "a child's development in verbal and quantitative reasoning, early literary and mathematics."

An interview will consist of two parts — group play with other applicants such as story time, and a one-on-one evaluation with a school representative.

"They're looking for a kid that can separate from their parents, who can go in and play a variety of games with their peers," Sigal said.

During the interview, a prospective kindergartener will sit with either a teacher or administrator, who will ask straightforward questions like "What's your name," "Where are you at school, "What's your mom's name," and "What does your mom do."

The questions sometimes get more specific. For example, if an interview is taking place on a Monday, Sigal said, the potential student could be asked, "What did you do this weekend?"

The school might be looking to see if the child can recall specific events or details that happened, Sigal says.

Some schools also use one of the more "old-school" methods of kindergarten admissions, Sigal said — the self-portrait. They ask kindergarten applicants to draw a self-portrait to demonstrate whether they can include the necessary details to distinguish their drawings from others.

During the one-on-one interview, the teacher or administrator may also play verbal games that highlight analogies or patterns.

In interviews, Sigal said, the school representative might give the potential student a group of pictures that are arranged randomly and say something like, "I dropped these on the way to school today, can you help me put them in order?" The student is evaluated on their ability to put the images in the right sequence, verbal skills, and ability to communicate an accompanying story.

Schools will also ask "Why" questions — such as, "Why do we look both ways before we cross the street?" — which have a more clean-cut series of responses.

"There are only so many answers to that that are correct," Sigal said.

Some activities, though, don't have just one right response. For example, kindergarten applicants are sometimes asked to sort animals in order to show whether they can devise a set of categories to divide them.

These methods place a lot of the burden of admissions decisions on the school itself, especially as schools move away from the ERB admissions test, which solely tested a student's IQ.

"I have a lot of faith with admissions people," Sigal said. "They know who is going to fit in well at their school."

The 10 Best Gins On The Market

$

martini cocktail

Gin is a mixing drink, but that doesn't mean that quality doesn't matter.

The spirit, which derives its flavor (and its name) from juniper berries, is an essential component in a ton of cocktails, so you still want to be sure you're going for the good stuff.

We consulted our friends at FindTheBest, who update their gin rankings regularly based on reviews from Wine Enthusiast Magazine and the Beverage Tasting Experience, as well as awards from the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Here's their latest list and they all happen to be $40 or less.

10. ARIA Portland Dry Gin ($24)

Dry gins are so-named because virtually no sugar is added. The Aria Portland Dry Gin comes from American Samoa and is best mixed in a martini or jasmine cocktail. It has a silky, fruity body and smells of spices and pine blossoms.

9. Ransom Old Tom Gin ($38)

Ransom Old Tom is a genevere gin, a type of spirit that originated Netherlands or Belgium, although this particular genevere comes from the US. It's best mixed in a gimlet or martini.

8. Sloane's Premium Dry Gin ($40)

This smooth dry gin comes from the Netherlands. It balances strong juniper flavors with a subtle sweet finish. Try it in a Tom Collins.

7. Rehorst Premium Milwaukee Gin ($36)

The Rehorst is practically a whole herb garden in a bottle; it contains aniseed, basil, cardamom, cassia, coriander seed, juniper, and lemon and orange peel. The sweet basil ingredient is especially unique; it adds an extra dash of floral flavoring to the gin.

6. Voyager Small-Batch Dry Gin ($30)

Though Voyager is a London Dry style gin, it's hand-crafted in the US. Made from grain spirits and organic herbs and spices, it's artisan distilled in the 19th century style.

Whitney Neill

5. Whitney Neill 96 Proof Gin ($39)

The Africa-inspired Whitley Neill features two African botanicals (and a baobab tree on the label). It's made in the UK and has bold, warm flavors.

4. Monopolowa Vienna Dry Gin ($16)

The Monopolowa is a London Dry but it comes from Vienna, Austria, and it's triple distilled and especially smooth.

3. New Amsterdam Gin ($14)

You don't have to spend a lot of money to get quality gin: the New Amsterdam is one of the more affordable bottles on this list, but it's a three-time Gold/Double Gold winner at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. It's a modern gin that comes from the U.S. and it has subtle citric flavors and a silky finish.

2. Martin Miller's Gin ($33)

Miller's calls this "one of the most aromatic and least junipery gins." It smells, instead, of cucumber, white, pepper, and lemon zest, and even contains a bit of nutmeg and liquorice. Try it in a Martinez cocktail.

1. Tanqueray No. 10 Gin ($30)

Tanquery 10 is a classic. It's the only gin out there made from handpicked fresh fruit, including grapefruits, oranges, and limes. It's won fully six Double Golds from the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, and it's not going to break the bank either. You cannot go wrong.

6 Things Power Couples Do To Make Love Last While Conquering The World

$
0

jolie pitt awesome

We recently dug deep into what makes relationships last, even when both people are working an insane number of hours.

In some cases, it's common sense. For instance, we weren't surprised to learn that kindness makes relationships stable

In others, common wisdom gets turned on its head: One couples therapist says that "date night" is not enough to make love last.

If you want the full story of how power couples nourish their relationships, see how Jessica Jackley and Reza Aslan manager theirs

In the meantime, here are the action points you can apply to your life:

• Share chores. The takeaway from one of the most thorough studies on American domestic life? "Couples who don't have a system for household tasks can get really resentful, really quickly," the Atlantic reports

• Make the effort to be kind and generous. Psychologists have found that the most successful couples have "low physiological arousal" when they're around each other. In other words, they feel calm and connected when they're side-by-side. Getting to that blissful state requires paying attention to when your partner is asking for attention, and giving it to them.

• Recognize that these things take time. Work has lots of short-term rewards; you ace a project, your boss high-fives you. Relationships have a longer reward cycle. "The relationship is a more long-term investment," Northwestern psychologist Lesley Seeger tells Business Insider. "Bonds have long-term security, where our stocks and other more immediately gratifying things are a whole different ballgame."

• Don't let "together" time happen by accident. When both people have busy lives, take the time every week to sit down and plan your schedules out. Seeger suggests questions like: What's on my spouse's schedule? What's on my schedule? How do we feel about our respective duties together?

• Workshop your goals. Jackley and Aslan, the entrepreneur-and-author power couple we profiled, have a tradition of taking a four- or five-day vacation at the end of every year. The kids go to hang with the grandparents, and the two of them figure out what they want out of the upcoming year. "We map out all the areas of our lives: individually, together, family, professional, everything, and talk about our hopes and dreams," Jackley tells Business Insider.

• Make big dreams come true. Date night isn't enough — dreams are necessary for long-term love. "You're going to need something more exciting to pull you through those low spots," says couples therapist Peter Pearson. He encourages couples to think about goals that "excite their imagination." Pearson and his wife Ellyn decided to start building schools in Africa. Other families road trip across America or backpack around the world. Pearson's advice: "Look for something that is a joint endeavor."

Amazing Folk Tale Map Reveals Deep Links Between Cultures

$

0

Researchers have identified 700 variants in Europe alone of a story described as "The tale of the kind girl and the mean girl."

These variants are comprised of 393 binary traits, such as whether the girls are a stepdaughter and a real daughter or sisters or cousins or some other combination or whether they encounter a talking bear, a talking cat, the king of cats, some other animal or no animal at all.

A statistical analysis of these variations produced this map of cultural links:

folktale map

The study, published in The Royal Society by Robert M. Ross at Macquarie University and Simon J. Greenhill and Quentin D. Atkinson at Australian National University, demonstrates the potential of applying scientific methods to cultural analysis — which makes sense given the similarity between biological genes and cultural memes.

It also points to intriguing conclusions about Europe and the spread of culture. One observation was that geography sometimes overrode linguistic and historical links.

"Swedish speakers from Finland are placed alongside Finnish, not Swedish, reinforcing the importance of geography over cultural ancestry. This is particularly interesting because Finnish comes from an entirely different language family to Swedish," Ross wrote in an email.

But geography alone doesn't explain the connections.

"Interestingly, the clusters don’t perfectly match with the deep language history (going back thousands of years), nor do they fit perfectly with geography (which might imply very recent contact). Instead, they seem to reflect a combination of language and geography, perhaps indicating long-standing spheres of cultural influence in Europe," Atkinson wrote in an email.

The cluster including German, Danish, Latvian, English, Irish, and Scottish doesn't look like an obvious geographic fit, but it may point to the lasting significance of early migrations.

"As a result of this surprising finding we speculated in our paper that this cluster might show the trace of ancient population movements," Ross wrote in an email. "The British Isles have met with waves of immigration and trade from the ancestors of these northern European groups, from Viking expansion beginning in the ninth century AD to trade networks such as the Hanseatic League, which linked the Baltic to Northern Europe and Britain from the thirteenth century AD. This is a particularly intriguing hypothesis because if this grouping is preserving the traces of early contact then it provides evidence that this history of this folktale stretches back beyond the earliest known written versions of the folktale, which do not appear until the fourteenth century."

frau holle kind girl mean girlAll of these insights come from a story I'd never heard of; but then again, something about the story feels universal and familiar. Here's how it goes, as described in the paper:

[T]he story is concerned with two girls, one of whom is good and kind while the other is evil and unkind. The good girl leaves her home and sets out on a journey for some reason. Her bucket may fall into a well and she climbs after it, or she may pursue a rolling cake. During her journey, in one important form of the story, she usually meets a cow, an apple tree, and an oven which ask her to help them. She complies with these requests and continues her journey until she comes to a house. These encounters on the way are absent from the second important form of the tale. At the house she takes services with an old woman or witch and performs housekeeping chores and other tasks. At the end of a year the girl wishes to return to her home. As a recompense for her labor the old woman offers the girl her choice between several boxes. The girl modestly chooses the smallest and least attractive box. When she reaches home and opens her box she finds it is full of gold. The bad girl is jealous and resolves to try her fortune. She sets out in the same way that the heroine did. She haughtily refuses to help the animals or things she meets on the way and at the house either refuses to work altogether or does a very poor job. She greedily chooses the biggest box, which when opened at home, is found to be full of snakes.

Which version of the story appears where? For more details, the researchers pointed to analysis by Professor Warren Everett Roberts in 1958 (noting that they disagreed with some of Robert's conclusions, which were based on intuition, not statistics).

Here's what he found:

460 West 22nd Street house

Bill White, the chairman and CEO of consulting firm Constellations Group, has sold his renovated townhouse in Chelsea for an even $16.25 million, according to Curbed.

He originally bought the townhouse with his husband Bryan Eure, senior vice president for business development at brokerage firm Willis and Global, for $4.6 million back in 2012.

Barring renovation costs, that means they made roughly $11.65 million in just three years.

According to an Instagram post from estate agent Fredrik Eklund (who shared the listing with colleague John Gomes), the townhouse was visited by Barack Obama, Jennifer Lopez, and Mark Wahlberg.

An anonymous LLC known as DRGB Y Asociados bought the home, according to property records.

The townhouse has six floors and four bedrooms, and comes with 6,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space. Douglas Elliman had the listing.

Originally built in 1840, this townhouse in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood went under a multi-million dollar construction.

The house sold for $16 million after the owners bought it for $4.6 million back in 2012.

The townhouse has six floors in total, as well as 5,000 square feet of space.

minecraft mansionSwedish video game programmer Markus Persson, best known as the creator of Minecraft, is the proud new owner of an incredible home in Beverly Hills.

According to Curbed LA, Persson purchased the 23,000-square-foot mansion for a jaw-dropping $70 million. That price may seem steep, but it's a full $15 million less than the original $85 million asking price.

Beyonce and Jay Z had previously been interested in buying the home, and the couple had reportedly visited the property six times.

Persson's $70 million purchase was a record for Beverly Hills.

"Marcus fell in love with the house, its sleek contemporary design and its spectacular panoramic views that sweep from downtown LA to the Pacific Ocean," Katia De Los Reyes, who represented Persson, told Curbed. "The fact that the house also was completely furnished in such great style was another major selling point for him."

The over-the-top house was listed by Ben Bacal Realty as well as Branden Williams and Rayni Romito Williams of Williams & Williams.

With a 16-car garage, home gym, and giant infinity pool, this home must be seen to be believed.

Welcome to 1181 North Hillcrest. The home was listed in September for $85 million.

It's located in the elite Beverly Hills neighborhood of Trousdale Estates.

The home received a complete overhaul after being purchased back in 2012. The new design is stunning.

How To Get The Perfect Shave At Home

We've shown you how to get perfect skin, but a big part of that is shaving properly.

And unless your father was a barber, you probably don't know the proper way to shave — or worse, you use an electric shaver.

Here's the right way to do it, which ensures perfect skin every time:

First, make sure you wash your face before you start shaving. This will stop any bacteria lying dormant on your face from getting into any of your skin's pores that will open during the shaving process, which would cause irritation or acne.

Then, splash you face with warm water. This will open up your pores, make your beard hairs softer, and makes it easier for your razor to make contact with your skin.

Apply your normal shaving cream. Then, shave only with the grain of your beard (the direction your hair is growing). Use short strokes and don't go over any areas more than once.

Apply only a little pressure as you shave, letting the sharpness of the razor do most of the work for you. This will minimize your chances of ingrown hairs and reduce irritation.

Rinse your razor often. After you're done, make sure you rinse your face with cold water to close your pores.

When it comes to razors, skip those multi-bladed razor offerings. Any razor with more than one or two blades will only end up irritating your face.

After you're done shaving, apply a soothing aftershave balm, like Dove Men's Hydrate Post Shave Balm. It's important to note, however, that many things called "aftershave" are frequently alcohol-based, which will dry out skin. You want something that will moisturize and protect, or that contains aloe vera if you commonly get razor burn.

It's that simple.

The Best Men's Watches To Give At Every Price Point

Watches_Gift Guide

Every man needs a time piece, but it's not always the right time to drop a few thousand dollars for one.

With that in mind, Business Insider put together a list of some of the best watches on the market at every price point. That means there's one in here for your kid brother graduating from high school, your cousin who just had a baby, and the man who has everything but could use a little something more.

There's even an option for those who don't want to buy. Our friends over at Eleven James — a kind of Rent-the-Runway for your wrist — helped us out with this story. Their model, and the very the idea that you don't have to commit to a piece for the rest of your life, is catching on even among the most passionate watch collectors.

"Gift giving is always fraught with uncertainty, and buying something as personal as watch for your special someone is even more fraught, thanks to all the different brands, styles and price points on the market today," said Adam Craniotes, a lifelong watch collector and contributing writer for numerous publications. "This is where a company like Eleven James shines, since it allows the client to 'test drive' a variety of watches, with the only criteria being that they're happy with what's on their wrist. Even for seasoned collectors, the gift of an Eleven James membership would be a welcome sight under the tree come Christmas morning."

So consider that. They carry serious brands like A. Lange & Sohne, Panerai, Patek Philippe and more.

You can also consider going vintage. It's more work, but it will make you look like a true aficionado. That said, you'll need to be careful. Make sure whatever you buy has as many of its original parts in tact as possible — the face and the dial especially.

"The dream watch for a vintage watch collector is a watch that has never been serviced or messed with at all," Benjamin Clymer, founder of watch publication Hodinkee, told us this spring.
