States Where Daycare Costs More Than A College Education

$

0

At more than $234,000, the cost of raising a child in the U.S. is higher than ever, according to a recent report by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Out of families' budgets, childcare ranked as the second-largest expenditure, taking up 18 percent of their spending. It's not hard to see why.

"Nearly half of children under the age of five in the U.S. are in some form of childcare center or family childcare home for an average of 35 hours a week," according to Good.is. "But in a period of slow economic growth, paying for this service is increasingly difficult for parents all across the country."

In some states, childcare actually costs more than a college education.

A Charming British Inn In One Of Tanzania's Most Remote Parks

beho beho

The Selous Game Reserve in southern Tanzania is nearly four times the size of Serengeti National Park, but is relatively unknown on the safari circuit, especially to tourists visiting from the U.S. who tend to hit the more popular game-viewing parks in the north.

It's a shame, because The Selous turned out to be one of my favorite destinations on a recent press trip to Tanzania. I saw a lion nearly take down a wildebeest and boated on Lake Tagalala, reputed to have the densest crocodile population in the world.

Click here to jump right to the hotel photos >>

Perhaps the best part was that our camp, called Beho Beho, was so remote that we didn't see a single other safari vehicle during our two-day stay in the park. It was like we had the entire 21,000-square-mile reserve to ourselves.

Beho Beho was a unique and stunning property. The British owners overhauled it from a private camp to a grade "A" lodge a little more than a decade ago, and have managed to create what they call a "house party" atmosphere in the middle of the bush.

The camp is centered around a massive stone "banda" a three-sided building with an open front looking out onto a man-made watering hole and the plains beyond. Meals are communal, and guests rotate among the safari guides for their daily game-viewing drives.

The rooms ten smaller bandas on either side of the main building are huge, with canopied beds, sitting areas, and outdoor showers. The rate, including accommodations, meals, drinks, laundry, and safari activities, is $920 per person per night, and there's a three-night minimum.

There are also options for guests who prefer more privacy. Beho Beho recently opened a "treehouse" lodge a half-hour walk from camp, where couples can sleep in a tent hoisted onto a large platform. Another option is Bailey's Banda, a two-bedroom house that comes with a pool and private chef, available for a $1,000-a-night surcharge.

For travelers looking for something off the beaten path, there's no better place to stay.

Disclosure: Our trip to Tanzania, including travel and lodging expenses, was sponsored by the Tanzania Tourist Board, Africa Adventure Company, Singita Grumeti Group, Coastal Aviation, Qatar Airways, Tanzania National Parks, Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority and Wildlife Division.

Beho Beho has its own airstrip, just a five-minute drive from camp.

I could tell from the moment I arrived that the place had a sense of humor.

Until about 14 years ago, the camp was used as a vacation home by its owners. After a major overhaul, it's a high-end resort in the middle of nowhere.

10 Items From Oprah's New 'Favorite Things' List That We Actually Love

$

Oprah

Not every extravagant product on Oprah Winfrey's annual "Favorite Things" list would make the perfect holiday gift. For every normally priced idea, there are about four other crazy expensive ones.

And the 2012 version of the list is no different, with stuff like a $3,000 Octane Fitness Q37ci Elliptical Trainer or a $450 Dyson Pedestal Fan making the cut. Who would buy that for someone for the holidays besides Oprah?

But the woman does have great taste, and there's no denying more than a few products caught our eye. So instead of focusing on all the nutty gifts she's planning to give away, we rounded up our favorites.

Plus, some of these items are up to 50 percent off with the code "OPRAH" until December 31, 2012.

H2O+ Marine Spa Gift Set

This gift set comes with  two body washes, two body scrubs, a body lotion, and a body cream all in a light mint and eucalyptus scent. Plus, Oprah says she "discovered these products at David Copperfield's house" and who doesn't want to smell like David Copperfield, right?

Cost: Originally $122, now $98 with code OPRAH (expires Dec 31, 2012).

Tusk Capri Double Zip Checkbook Clutch

"Tired of fishing through your bag for your checkbook and phone? Here's a holds-everything-but-the-kitchen-sink wallet, and it's made of Italian kidskin leather," gushes Oprah. Though I do have to agree with her, these clutches are really cute.

Cost: Originally $138, now $117 with code OPRAH (expires Dec 31, 2012).

Corkcicle

This is great for the wine lover on your list. The Corkcicle comes in three different versions — classic cork top, bright colored top, and even customizable versions. All you need to do is freeze the faux-ice Corkcicle and insert into a wine bottle to keep your vino chilled for over an hour.

Cost:$24.95.

Toronto's Glamorous Trump International Hotel Is Looking More And More Like A Disaster

toronto trump tower

The Trump Corporation's first venture into the Canadian market may be falling apart, and not just literally.

Talon International Inc. — the company that developed Toronto’s 65-story Trump International Hotel & Tower — is now suing seven disgruntled investors who believe they were misled, according to a recent report from The Toronto Star.

The Canadian newspaper reports that "dozens" of parties who purchased suites in the new hotel-condo complex have been trying to renege on final payments. The payments average over $500,000.

The problem is that rising maintenance costs and exorbitant property taxes have cost investors more than they expected. Revenue from the hotel was supposed to offset rising property costs, but the Star adds "buyers say they’ve been told hotel occupancy is running anywhere from 10 to 50 percent and room rates are averaging about $300 per night instead of the $600 and up Talon had originally touted."

The project — already quite controversial in Toronto architecture circlesbegan construction in 2007.  The hotel portion of the tower had a 'soft launch' at the end of January. Donald Trump is known to be a minority shareholder in the investment, though it's unclear exactly how much money Trump invested in the project.

Top Chef's Manuel Treviño Shares Some Pro Tips For Cooking A Thanksgiving Turkey

$

manuel trevino

The scariest part of hosting a Thanksgiving meal is definitely making the turkey. From overcooking the bird to miscalculating portions, a lot of things can go wrong.

Chef Manuel Treviño, who appeared on Bravo's "Top Chef Season 4" and runs the kitchen at Marble Lane, the steakhouse that opened last year at NYC's Dream Downtown, shared some of pro tips for making a Thanksgiving turkey that your guests will scarf down.

On buying and prepping the bird:

  • "Fresh birds will always be juicer than frozen birds."

  • "A great tip that most people never think to do for crispier skin is simply leave the bird in the refrigerator unwrapped overnight."

  • "Brining a turkey will add additional flavor and moisture to the bird, but make sure you do not over-brine – a few hours will do."

  • "Don’t forget to take the bag of giblets out!"

To stuff or not to stuff?

  • "A bird will always cook more evenly if it’s not stuffed, so resist that urge to stuff your bird and fill with the cavity with some aromatic vegetables – it’s better to just put the stuffing in a casserole dish."

On oven temperature and technique:

  • "Temperature is key, so if you don’t trust your oven then use an oven thermometer. Owning a meat thermometer in general is something I find to be essential. It takes all the guess work out of cooking."

  • "The white meat and the dark meat will never cook at the same rate. Sure, a whole bird looks pretty on the table but does it really matter when the meat is overdone and dry? I favor long slow cooking techniques for the legs and thighs such as braising or confit. Then, I like to brine the breast and roast separately – don’t be afraid to disassemble your bird, your guests and taste buds will thank you later."

This beautiful example of a 1957 Mercedes Gullwing 300SL was spotted in Arizona by Tyler McKinley.

Also on the block will be a 1928 Sterns-Knight Model F-6-85 and a 1925 Stutz 695 Torpedo Tail Speedster. Both are impressive and historic cars, but have nothing on the sheer beauty of the 300SL.

The Least And Most Expensive Places To Cook A Thanksgiving Dinner

$

Thanksgiving Dinner

The cost of Thanksgiving dinner has gone up over the years. It averaged $34.56 in 2002 and now is nearly $50. But depending on where you live and where you shop, your family could spend less than $35 for turkey and all the trimmings this year — or nearly than two and a half times that amount.

The American Farm Bureau Federation identified the 12 basic grocery items used to make a standard Thanksgiving meal for ten. Based on cost-of-living data calculated by the Council for Community and Economic Research, 24/7 Wall St. determined how much this meal would cost at an inexpensive supermarket in the most inexpensive city in America, and what it would cost at an expensive supermarket in the most expensive city.

According to C2ER, the urban area with the lowest overall cost of living is Harlingen, Texas, where prices for all goods are roughly 80% of the national average. Located a few miles from the border with Mexico, Harlingen has a generally low-income or poor population. As of 2011, more than one in three residents were living below the poverty line. The median household income was just $32,714, compared to the national median household income of $50,502.

Harlingen, Tex.
> Store: Walmart
> Total price: $33.13 (33% lower*)
> Turkey price: $14.08 (37% lower)
> Sweet potatoes price:
$0.60 (81% lower)

We asked a Harlingen reporter to see how much a standarThanksgiving dinner would cost at the local Walmart. Walmart is widely regarded as one of the least expensive places to buy groceries nationwide. While a local grocery store may have lower prices, Walmart fairly represents prices at their lowest nationwide.

According to the AFBF, a basic Thanksgiving dinner for ten includes a 16-pound turkey, 12 rolls, a 1-pound relish tray of celery and carrots, a half-pint of whipping cream, 14 ounces of cubed stuffing, three pounds of sweet potatoes, one gallon of milk, 12 ounces of fresh cranberries, one pound of green peas, one 30-ounce can of pumpkin pie mix, and two pie shells. Also needed are small amounts of miscellaneous ingredients, the average national cost of which is $3.18.

At the Harlingen Walmart, these goods could be purchased for just $33.83, which represents a savings of $15.65, or 32%, compared to the AFBF’s national average. A Harlingen resident shopping at Walmart would save the most on the $14.08 Riverside brand 16-pound turkey. The national average price of a 16-pound turkey is $22.23. While the national average price for three pounds of sweet potatoes is $3.15, the Harlingen resident paid just 60 cents for Louisiana sweet potatoes, an 80% discount.

Manhattan, NY
> Store: Whole Foods
> Total price: $80.48 (60% higher*)
> Turkey price: $40.21 (81% higher)
> Sweet potatoes price: $4.47 (41% higher)

On the other end of the spectrum, C2ER identified New York City’s borough of Manhattan as the most expensive urban area in the country. The cost of all goods and services there is an estimated 230% of the national average. Median income in the borough is more than double that of Harlingen, Texas. Because 24/7 Wall St. offices are located in New York, we were able to survey prices at a nearby Whole Foods — one of the higher-priced national supermarket chains — to see how much that same Thanksgiving dinner would cost a Manhattan resident.

While we did not always find the identical portion sizes, even the smaller portions of items listed by AFBF were more expensive than the national average. Without adjusting for size, the total cost before sales tax was $80.48. A 14-ounce tray of carrots and celery cost $4.99, while the national average price for a 16-ounce tray is 76 cents. Three pounds of sweet potatoes cost $4.47 — $1.32 more than the national average, and more than seven times the price in Harlingen. A 16.15-pound Whole Foods free range turkey cost $40.21, well more than the entire meal at the Harlingen Walmart.

Menu Items By Price and Location

Total$49.48$33.83$80.48

*Included in the AFBF’s calculation are small amounts of miscellaneous ingredients used to make a Thanksgiving meal, including coffee, onions, eggs, sugar, flour, evaporated milk and butter. Due to the small size, we were unable to calculate them. As a result, the difference between the national average and the prices for the two locations does not take them intaccount.

How To Deep Fry A Turkey Without Blowing Yourself Up

$
0
0

Deep-Fry TurkeyAs amusing as it was to watch William Shatner’s dramatic tale of a fried turkey gone wrong for State Farm this month, we thought it might be useful to provide some grounded tips this Thanksgiving.

Deep-frying a turkey can yield incredible results: a glistening bird with golden-brown skin that’s cooked perfectly in minutes. But anyone who’s watched a YouTube video in which a deep-fried turkey goes up in flames should understand that the technique is no joke.

Done right, you could be filling your plate in an hour. Done wrong, you could be eating Jell-O at the ER. Here, Food & Wine’s deep-fried turkey tips (use at your own risk!)

1. Test to see how much oil you really need. Do not fill the pot with oil yet. Using cold water, measure how much liquid should be put in the pot to cover the turkey without overflowing onto the burner.

2. Go outside. Turkey frying should only be done outdoors, on a flat and level surface—not in an enclosed area (like a kitchen or garage) or on a wooden structure (like a deck)! Also, remember that oil is also hard to clean off of concrete. Make sure to clear the area of children, pets and intoxicated relatives.

3. Use a fresh bird, or fully thaw a frozen one. The minute any moisture from the turkey hits hot oil, the oil will start to splatter and can cause a spillover effect, starting a fire.

4. Skip the stuffing. You’ll have to keep the stuffing on the side when frying a turkey. Michael Symon’s stuffing muffins with lemony mushrooms and pine nuts, or butternut squash with corn bread, are fantastic. Also, remember to remove the giblets from the bird’s cavity before frying.

5. Lower the bird slowly into the oil. Do not drop the turkey into the deep-fryer.

6. Do not move the pot. Are you Homer Simpson? Adjusting a vat of hot oil is incredibly dangerous.

7. Stick around. Never leave the turkey unattended. It can only take a moment for something to go wrong.

8. Don’t start drinking until after the oil has cooled. Better to be alert until this bird is cooked.

9. Wait to carve. Let the cooked turkey rest for at least 30 minutes, in order to retain the hot juices.

10. Keep heavy blankets nearby for emergencies. Water will not extinguish an oil fire, it will only spread the ignited oil. A wool blanket will help put out flare-ups.

17 Incredibly Expressive Photos Of Dogs

Gerrard Charles Gethings, adorable dogs

Photographer Gerrard Gethings captures personalities of dogs in earnest portrait-style photos set against minimal background in his book 'Dogonomics.'

Photography of this kind is a stylized art, and Gethings has shared some tips on getting the perfect picture of a pet:

"Capturing the personalities of the animals is always the goal. They are all different so creating an environment within which you have total control of the light is the first thing. It needn’t be huge, maybe a few square feet. The owner should always be there to calm and control things. Putting up a backdrop is a good idea, as this will reduce distractions in the final image."

We are featuring a selection of photos from Dogonomics here, courtesy of Gerrard Gethings.

Some people know how to live well.

They work hard. They play hard. They have fabulous adventures and pursue exotic dreams.

It's enough to make any normal human a little jealous.

It's also enough to make anyone think a little more about their own passions and dreams.

After all, if these folks can do it, why can't any of us push the boundaries of what we can achieve?

Bill Mai: Creating waves of wealth

Charles River Ventures partner Bill Tai has combined his two favorite things in the world: funding startups and kiteboarding.

His MaiTai Kite Camp in Maui aims to teach entrepreneurs how to do the sport, which involves riding a contraption that combines a surfboard with a kite-like sail—through ocean waves.

Through the end of 2011, graduates of Tai's camp had generated $7 billion in wealth by going public or selling their companies, reports Kym McNicholas on Forbes.

Tai is also a sailor, windsurfer, and Olympic Ambassador for the International Kiteboarding Society.

Jeremy Bloom: From mogul skier to tech mogul

Before founding a tech startup, Jeremy Bloom was an Olympic mogul skier. He also almost became a football player for the Philadelphia Eagles. An injury during training camp kept him from playing.

Today he's the CEO of online-advertising startup Integrate, backed by $15 million of venture capital from Foundry Group, Comcast Ventures, and Liberty Global.

Bloom also created a cool nonprofit called Wish of a Lifetime which grants wishes to people 65 years old or older across the country.

Osman Kent: The rock-and-roll life

Osman Kent made his money by cofounding 3Dlabs and selling it to Creative Labs in 2002 for about $170 million.

He retired and became an aspiring music mogul with his own record label, Songphonic Records. He even bought an English mansion formerly owned by Roxy Music's Phil Manzanera, with its own recording studio.

He came out of retirement earlier this year when he found some irresistible new tech. He used it to found Numecent, which could change how the software industry makes and sells its products.

Go retro with Moleskine's new iPad cover.

Moleskine is known for its classic notebooks and planners, so the old-meets-new aesthetic is what makes the company's new tablet covers so cool.

The iPad-compatible cover is combined with blank notebook pages, perfect for the gadget nut who likes to use a scratch pad every once in awhile. iPhone versions are also available.

Price:$74.50

Give the gift of history with a collection of Charles and Ray Eames' films.

Skip the expensive Eames chair and buy your furniture-loving friend a box set of the films of Charles and Ray Eames.

The films, which the husband-and-wife duo created over three decades, range from one to 30 minutes in length and explore topics from history to science.

Price:$80

Spruce up the kitchen with space-saving collapsible bowls.

We love the convenience of Progressive's collapsible storage bowls.

This set of three has 1.5-, 3-, and 5-cup bowls that flatten to a third of their height when they aren't being used. They're also a stylish way to bring lunch to the office.
