The chief technology officer at GE Renewable Energy on hiring more women in tech and overcoming imposter syndrome as a leader

Danielle Merfeld

  • Danielle Merfeld has been the chief technology officer at GE Renewable Energy, which has nearly 40,000 employees in more than 80 countries, since 2017.
  • To get to this point, Merfeld hustled, first in school by asking for a job in a lab at Notre Dame as a freshman, then working her way up in various departments at GE.
  • Merfeld told Business Insider that companies need to overcome biases in hiring and level the playing field for women in tech, and women should also know their worth.
  • "Women typically exhibit more empathy, they're really good [at] communicating and networking within a group and finding ways to collaborate. Those are all more important in tech than ever before," she said.

Danielle Merfeld has been the chief technology officer at GE Renewable Energy, which has nearly 40,000 employees in more than 80 countries, since 2017. This means that she is responsible for managing 6,200 engineers and technologists on any given day.

Working in different divisions of GE, including as a solar business leader and global research vice president, and having been immersed in this space for over 12 years — all of that time at GE — she noted that most people outside the renewable energy sector are not aware of how much has changed.

"It has happened so fast in the last several years. It's sort of snuck up on everyone," Merfeld told Business Insider.

Almost 70% percent of the new energy capacity being installed every year is renewable energy, she explained. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency, nearly two-thirds of all new power generation capacity added in 2018 was from renewables. Meanwhile, GE and some of the world's other top manufacturing companies are racing to see who can build the most powerful offshore wind turbine.

"Every time you see costs decreasing and performance increasing regularly year over year over year, all of a sudden you wake up and you've got the most affordable source of energy on the planet," she said. She argued that the rise in renewable energy isn't just policy- and environmentally-driven — "it's actually a real economic decision that people are making," she said.

But as passionate about renewable energy Merfeld is, she's just as adamant about women leadership and representation in her field.

"There are more women going to college than ever before in real numbers and in terms of the ratios of men and women, but women are not choosing to go into science and technology at the same rate as we did 20 years ago," she said. Merfeld has a BS from the University of Notre Dame and a PhD from Northwestern University, both in electrical engineering.

One problem, as Merfeld sees it, is biases in the systems that tech companies use to recruit and promote employees. For example, the description of a job that might be seen as typically filled by a man might contain sports metaphors or use more aggressive language.

"This might reduce interest by women who are qualified and might otherwise be good candidates, leading them not to apply," Merfeld said. "These kinds of unintended, or unconsciously intended, consequences can happen at almost every stage of a career."

Merfeld shared with Business Insider how she overcame these obstacles to build a successful career in tech.

Moving up and fighting doubts

As CTO, Merfeld oversees technology development for renewable generation systems, such as onshore and offshore wind turbines, solar and hydropower, and batteries and grid management systems.

Of course, it was a climb to get to this point, and Merfeld didn't hesitate in her quest to excel in science and tech. As a freshman at Notre Dame, she asked the electrical engineering dean if she could help do laboratory research in a lab at Notre Dame to fulfill her work-study requirement, instead of in a cafeteria, and got the job.

"That gave me this very early look into the life of someone doing research," she recalled. "It's easy to be intimidated as a young woman thinking about getting a higher degree in a technology space. But meeting with graduate students and seeing their day-to-day work, and seeing that they were just regular people, too — I realized that I could do that, too."

And yet, even with her eventually stellar academic credentials and steady career advancement, there were doubts.

"The biggest thing that I had to overcome were my own feelings of inadequacy because, as I moved into new roles, there was always a big expansion of what I should be good at," Merfeld said. "And especially having a PhD, I always measured myself on a scale of, how much did I know, how much of an expert was I in something."

She suggested that sometimes you just need to know what you don't know. Early on in her career, she took a position where she moved into a leadership role that was relatively broad. "There was no way I could learn all this stuff and be the expert," she said. "I was supposed to be the leader of the team, not the smartest person on the teams. It took me a little while to realize that."

Believing in yourself and overcoming systemic bias

Awareness of unconscious bias is important to combat gender inequalities in tech, Merfeld emphasized, but so are systematic changes. This includes ensuring there are women are on the slate of candidates and on the interviewing team when hiring and using a standard set of questions where responses to each question are evaluated and scored in real time throughout the interview.

"We are encouraged to think through what biases we might be bringing into our decision-making and focus on the overall balance of skills that are needed for each role," she said about GE's hiring process specifically.

She added that women should be confident that they can (and will) succeed in a tech role.

"Women typically exhibit more empathy, they're really good [at] communicating and networking within a group and finding ways to collaborate. Those are all more important in tech than ever before because we have such complicated systems-level problems," she said. "There's never one person who's going to be able to solve a problem or build the next generation of tech. It's going to require a team and it's going to require thoughtful collaboration and empathy with the end user and the customer. And women bring those capabilities … [and] more naturally develop them through the shaping they experience growing up. So, lean into that."

Michael Bloomberg is reportedly planning to run for president. Here's how the 8th-richest person in the US and former NYC mayor makes and spends his $52 billion fortune.

With his $52.4 billion fortune, former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg is the richest person in New York.

Though his 12-year run as mayor ended in 2013, the billionaire remains as busy as ever and is spending plenty of money as he goes. After all, he once said he hopes to give away his entire fortune before he dies.

From his early days working on Wall Street to his generous philanthropic donations, here's how Bloomberg made — and spends — his billions.

Billionaire media mogul and former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg is preparing to join the 2020 Democratic presidential primary, The New York Times reported on Thursday.

The announcement comes eight months after the moderate former Republican said he wouldn't be running in 2020.

Bloomberg has an estimated net worth of $52.4 billion, according to Forbes, making him the richest person in New York and the eighth-richest person in the US.

The 77-year-old billionaire cofounded financial information and media company Bloomberg LP in 1981, and he owns 88% of the business, according to Forbes.

Bloomberg LP brought in $10 billion in revenue in 2018 and employs almost 20,000 people in 176 locations in 120 countries.

Born on Valentine's Day in 1942, Bloomberg grew up in Medford, Massachusetts, a small city near Boston.

According to his website, Bloomberg grew up in a middle-class family and was in the Boy Scouts.

After graduating from Johns Hopkins with an electrical engineering degree and earning an MBA from Harvard, Bloomberg went to work on Wall Street.

He landed a job at Salomon Brothers in New York City, where he spent countless hours counting out stocks and bonds in the bank's vault. His starting salary was $9,000 a year, according to his website.

He eventually worked his way up the ranks and was named partner in 1972.

In 1978, Bloomberg was put in charge of running the firm's information technology division, which was a clear demotion, according to John Sviokla and Mitch Cohen, authors of "The Self-Made Billionaire Effect: How Extreme Producers Create Massive Value."

Regardless, Bloomberg stayed at Salomon for three more years until the company merged with commodity trading firm Phibro in 1981 and let Bloomberg go with a severance check to the tune of $10 million.

After leaving Salomon, Bloomberg used part of his severance to start his own business, a financial information technology company now known as Bloomberg LP.

Originally called Innovative Market Solutions, the company aimed to make it easier for traders to wade through data.

It eventually debuted the Bloomberg terminal (first known as the MarketMaster terminal), and Merrill Lynch was the first customer, purchasing 22 of them and investing $30 million in the company for a 30% stake.

Bloomberg LP became widely successful throughout the '80s and was worth $2 billion by 1989.

The company branched out into other forms of media, including Bloomberg News and Bloomberg TV.

In 2001, Bloomberg entered the world of politics, running for mayor of New York City as a Republican. He was elected just weeks after the September 11 attacks.

While in office, Bloomberg — already a billionaire — accepted only $1 a year throughout his 12 years in the mayor's office, rejecting a salary that would have amounted to $2.7 million throughout his tenure, according to The New York Times.

Instead, Bloomberg spent $650,000 of his own personal fortune throughout his time as mayor, including roughly $6 million on private plane travel, according to the Times.

When he wanted to run for a third term as mayor, Bloomberg campaigned to change the law that limited officials to only two terms in office — and won.

When his 12-year run as mayor ended in 2013, Bloomberg spent a stint as a full-time philanthropist.

By 2015, he stepped back into his role as CEO of Bloomberg LP.

Bloomberg's long-term partner is Diana Taylor, who was the de facto "first lady of New York" during his tenure as mayor.

Taylor has an MBA from Dartmouth University and a public health degree from Columbia University.

Her career includes serving as deputy secretary to former New York governor George Pataki, superintendent of banking for the State of New York, managing director at Wolfensohn Fund Management, and vice chair of Solera Capital, a women-owned private equity firm.

The couple met in 2010 at a Citizens Budget Commission luncheon when she was at Wolfensohn, the Times reported.

Bloomberg has two daughters with his ex-wife, Susan Brown.

Emma Bloomberg, his older daughter, is active in the nonprofit world, having spent more than six years at the Robin Hood Foundation. She's now the CEO of Murmuration, a nonprofit with the goal of reducing inequality and improve outcomes for children.

Emma, who graduated from Princeton University, the Harvard Kennedy School of Government and the Harvard Business School, also sits on the board Bloomberg Family Foundation, the Robin Hood Foundation, the KIPP Foundation, New Classrooms, and Leadership for Educational Equity.

Bloomberg's younger daughter, Georgina Bloomberg, is a professional equestrian and author of young adult novels. Georgina is a New York University graduate and is a self-described animal lover who has reportedly rescued five dogs, a pig, a goat, two mules, and two miniature horses.

The former New York mayor controls an impressive real-estate portfolio. In New York City, he lives in a five-story mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side.

At the end of his last term as mayor, the billionaire spent at least $1.7 million renovating the building.

At one point in 2013, Bloomberg owned a whopping 14 properties worldwide, with homes everywhere from New York to London to Bermuda.

Bloomberg bought a $20 million home in the Hamptons in 2011.

The Southampton estate includes a 22,000-square-foot Georgian mansion with 11 bedrooms and eight bathrooms.

Bloomberg also reportedly owns a waterfront home in Bermuda. While he was mayor, he flew one of his private jets down to the island about twice a month, according to the Times.

Bloomberg bought and demolished a waterfront house there, replacing it with a $10 million home three times the size, the Times reported.

According to Bermuda's Royal Gazette, Bloomberg is still a part-time resident as of 2019.

In 2015, Bloomberg dropped $25 million on a London mansion that British novelist George Eliot once called home.

The seven-bedroom Chelsea townhouse became Bloomberg's second home in the city, where he had already owned an apartment on Cadogan Square for years.

Bloomberg LP has a massive building in London that serves as its European headquarters.

The one-million-square-foot building in the center of London, completed in 2017, took about $1.3 billion and almost a decade to build.

The building, which has been called "the world's most sustainable office," won the 2018 Stirling prize for architecture.

The company's New York City headquarters are on Lexington Avenue in Manhattan, in a 55-story building informally known as Bloomberg Tower.

Bloomberg's 900,000 square feet of office space in the building span 29 floors.

Bloomberg has shelled out millions on expensive toys, including helicopters and a fleet of private planes.

His purchases include an AgustaWestland AW109SP helicopter that retailed for around $7 million at the time he bought it in 2013.

Bloomberg keeps his fleet at the Morristown Municipal Airport in New Jersey, the Times reported in 2012.

Bloomberg is a well-known philanthropist.

Through Bloomberg Philanthropies, the billionaire has donated an estimated $8 billion to gun control, climate change and other causes, according to Forbes.

Alongside fellow billionaires Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, Bloomberg has signed the Giving Pledge, vowing to donate at least half of his wealth to charity.

In 2015, he donated $100 million to Cornell University for the construction of a new tech-focused graduate school in New York City.

The campus on Roosevelt Island opened in September 2017.

Bloomberg has donated at least $3.3 billion to his alma mater, Johns Hopkins University, in the years since he graduated in 1964.

His first donation to the school was $5 the year after he graduated, and he has continued to fund the university with gifts.

In 2013, Bloomberg gave his alma mater $350 million, bringing the sum of his donations to the school to $1.1 billion. At the time, it was the largest donation to an American educational institution in history.

And in November 2018, he shattered his own record by giving the school $1.8 billion to go toward undergraduate financial aid and recruitment.

Bloomberg is a strong supporter of gun control and has pledged over $50 million toward a new campaign for stricter gun restrictions.

In 2006, he cofounded Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a bipartisan group of mayors advocating for gun legislation reforms that later merged with Moms Demand Action.

In 2014, Bloomberg pledged to spend $50 million to build a grassroots network of voters dedicated to curbing gun violence, which led to the formation of Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit organization that advocates for gun control.

In 2017, he promised to match every donation made to the organization.

If Bloomberg were indeed to run for president, many Democrats believe his virtually unlimited campaign cash, loyal staffers, and philanthropic record would make him a formidable candidate, as Business Insider's Eliza Relman reported.

With his $52.4 billion fortune, Bloomberg could outspend much of the Democratic primary field, Rebecca Katz, a progressive strategist and former aide to Mayor Bill de Blasio, told Insider in February.

But his relatively moderate policy positions and his status as a 77-year-old wealthy white man could hurt him.

"For too long the people at the top of the Democratic Party have been wealthier, whiter, more male, and more conservative than the base of the Democratic Party which looks a lot more like [Rep.] Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez," Waleed Shahid, communications director for Justice Democrats, told Insider earlier this year.

How to clear the cache on a PS4 to make your system run more efficiently

ps4 power button

If you've never heard of a cache before, it's the part of a computer that stores temporary data, as well as allows for faster and smoother access of said data. When a computer or other device is running slowly or not performing at its maximum capacity, it can be helpful to clear the system's cache.

Like computers, the PlayStation 4 has a cache that should be cleared every so often to ensure it runs smoothly.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

PlayStation 4 (From $299.99 at Best Buy)

How to clear the cache on your PS4

The process of clearing your PS4's cache is simple. Just follow the steps below.

1. Turn off your PS4. Your PS4 must be completely off in order to clear its cache; if it's left in Rest Mode, the process won't work.

2. While the PS4 is shutting down, its indicator light will blink. Wait until the indicator light has stopped blinking. The PS4 will only be completely off once the light stops blinking.

5d6983e32e22af3ac800823c

3. Disconnect the PS4's power cord from the back of the console. Don't simply unplug the cord from the wall; it needs to be disconnected from the PS4 itself in order to clear the cache. Also note that different PS4 models, such as the Pro or Slim, may have their power cords located in a different spot than indicated in the photo seen here.

Screen Shot 2019 11 08 at 3.10.26 PM

4. After disconnecting the power cord, wait for at least 30 seconds. Once 30 seconds have passed, plug the cord back into the PS4.

Your PS4's cache should now be clear, and you can test its performance by starting the system back up.

How to remove the background of an image in Photoshop using 2 different methods

Photoshop logo macbook

Do you ever wonder what your fluffy Akita might look like in its natural wintry habitat? Or perhaps, what your cuddly black cat might look like in an unnatural, hostile habitat, like the endzone of an NFL stadium?

While we didn't need Photoshop to envision the latter this football season, in general, Photoshop is your go-to tool to make what's usually only imaginable a reality, or as real as a picture, at least.

Removing a background in Photoshop paves the way for some of the most fun uses of the application.

And while there are more complex, time-consuming ways to rid your subject of its boring background, there's an easy method you can go about with the Quick Selection Tool in Adobe Photoshop CC 2020.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Adobe Photoshop (From $129.99 at Best Buy)

Macbook Pro (From $1,299 at Best Buy)

Microsoft Surface 2 (From $1,999 at Best Buy)

How to remove a background in Photoshop

1. Start the Photoshop app on your Mac or PC. Pull up the image you'd like to remove the background from by clicking "File," and then "Open…" from the top menu.

2. Next, it's time to wield the Quick Selection Tool. The icon, a solid rectangle surrounded by a dotted line, is found on the left side toolbar by right-clicking the Object Selection Tool and clicking the third icon.

How to remove background in Photoshop

3. Click piece by piece until you have surrounded the image that you want to remain in the foreground, or the part of the image that will remain after the background has been removed. You can also tap "Select Subject" in the upper "Options" menu bar.

How to remove background in Photoshop

4. Zoom in to fix any imperfections around your subject. You can also do this in "Quick Mask" mode.

5. When you're happy with the image that you want to isolate from the background, right click your outlined subject and click "Layer Via Copy."

How to remove background in Photoshop

6. Tap the eyeball icon in the "Layers" panel next to "Layer 0," as it will be called by default to make the background disappear, in the menu on the right side of your screen.

Alternatively, here's an easier way to remove the background, if you don't need near-perfect margins on your subject

1. Open your image.

2. Create a new layer in the right side "Layers" panel. Deselect "Layer 1," and select the "Background" layer, with your photo as the icon image, under "Layers."

How to remove background in Photoshop

3. With that layer selected, you will now see the option "Remove Background" under the "Quick Actions" panel. Click it.

4. You may need to tap the double arrows to "Expand Panels" in order to see "Quick Actions" if you're on a smaller screen.

Eerie photos of an abandoned airport that hasn't been touched in 25 years

  • I recently visited Abkhazia, a disputed region in Georgia, to photograph abandoned buildings and towns.
  • The Sukhumi Babushara Airport in Abkhazia was built in the 1960s, but hasn't been used since the early 1990s after it was heavily damaged in a war with Georgia.
  • Eerie photos of the abandoned airport show what it looks like today.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

On the coast of western Asia's Black Sea lies an airport that has been abandoned for 25 years.

The Sukhumi Babushara Airport in Abkhazia, a disputed region of Georgia, was built in the 1960s, when Abkhazia was still a part of the Soviet Union.

Thanks to the city of Sukhumi's proximity to the Black Sea, the airport was popular for domestic travelers looking for a beach getaway. At its peak, close to 5,000 people traveled through the airport each summer.

But the airport's fate changed in the early 1990s, when Abkhazia was ravaged by war with Georgia. The airport was heavily damaged, leading to its abandonment.

As a photographer with a focus on abandoned buildings, I took a particular interest in the Abkhazia airport. I recently traveled to the region to document what 25 years of neglect have done to the building.

Here's what the airport looks like today.

Abkhazia's airport has gone virtually untouched since the early 1990s. The airport is closed for international traffic because it's not recognized by the International Civil Aviation Organization.

There's a non-functioning plane still sitting in the abandoned runway. The Yak-40 aircraft carried former Georgian president Eduard Shevardnadze to Abkhazia in March 1993 to take charge of Georgian forces in the region.

The decaying entrance to the airport was a sign of what was to come.

Here's what I found inside the airport, which was heavily damaged and eventually abandoned during the conflict with Georgia.

Concrete staircases leading to an empty upper level were some of the only structures I saw standing.

Here's the view from the top floor.

The airport was riddled with landmines during the war. It wasn't until 2003 that all landmines and other explosive devices were declared to have been removed from the airport by the HALO Trust.

Source: The HALO Trust

The airport is inaccessible to the public, but luckily, a few military personnel were willing to show me around.

Russia is one of the few countries to recognize Abkhazia as a sovereign state, but even Russian planes can't fly to the airport because of sanctions by the International Air Transport Association.

This storage area was visibly damaged and was in the worst shape of the areas I saw.

You can see the old baggage carousels where arriving passengers once picked up their luggage.

The Abkhazian president said in 2006 that he hoped the airport would resume operations soon, but apart from a visit from the Russian foreign minister in 2008, that hasn't materialized.

And it isn't likely the airport will be used any time soon.

The world's first hybrid cruise ship is currently on its maiden voyage, an 18-day trip to Antarctica with 450 guests onboard. Here's a look inside.

MS Roald Amundsen

  • Hurtigruten, a Norwegian expedition cruise company, unveiled the world's first hybrid cruise ship earlier this year. It is currently on its maiden voyage to Antarctica with 450 passengers aboard.
  • The vessel, MS Roald Amundsen, runs on low sulfur diesel fuel that is supported by battery packs, cutting emissions by 20%.
  • But it's not all science and technology on board: The ship is also equipped with an infinity pool, luxury suites, three restaurants, and a glass-encased sauna.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Luxury and sustainability are merging in the world of yachts.

In September, the world's first hydrogen-powered superyacht was unveiled at the Monaco Yacht Show. And right now, the world's first hybrid, battery-supported cruise ship is making its maiden voyage to Antarctica with 450 passengers aboard, according to Robb Report.

The MS Roald Amundsen's first expedition to Antarctica is fitting – it was named after the eponymous legendary Norwegian polar explorer. The ship was unveiled by Hurtigruten, a Norwegian expedition cruise company, this summer.

The 459-foot cruise ship is equipped with battery packs that support its low sulfur, diesel-powered, Rolls Royce-built engines.

That's not to say the cruise is devoid of the lavish trappings of a typical cruise ship: There's also an infinity pool, a glass-encased sauna, three restaurants, and luxurious cabins on board. Throughout the ship, there are almost 600 works of art produced by young Norwegian artists, handpicked by the queen of Norway.

Prices for a future cruise featuring the same route start at $14,720 per person. The more lavish cabins raise that baseline to $23,046 per person.

Keep reading for a look inside the cruise ship.

It runs on Rolls Royce-built engines powered by low sulfur diesel fuel and batteries, which, according to the ship's developer, lowers the ship's CO2 emissions by 20%.

In addition to its operating systems, the ship is also committed to sustainability in other ways. There are no single-use plastics aboard and the uniforms worn by the crew are made from recycled ocean plastic.

The cruise ship is currently on a full capacity, 18-day maiden voyage to Antarctica.

The maiden voyage started in Valparaíso, Chile before cruising south along the coast of South America toward the Drake Passage. From there, the ship spends three days in Antarctica before returning to Punta Arenas, Chile.

The MS Roald Amundsen is just one example of the luxury travel industry becoming more eco-friendly in 2019.

Business Insider previously reported that a model for the first hydrogen-powered yacht was unveiled in September by Sinot, a Dutch yacht-design company. The 367-foot vessel will be completely powered by liquid hydrogen and fuel-cell technology. Its only emission will be water.

Beyond boats, luxury African safaris are also embracing the eco-friendly. In August, Business Insider's Katie Warren reported on a Botswana safari company equipped with conservation camps for children, where lessons on the environment, health, and nutrition are taught.

Increased attention to sustainability and conservation in the luxury travel sector play into the larger trend of "transformational travel." Ultimately, the ultra-wealthy want to leave their vacation with a transformative, emotional experience to bring home, and in some cases, want to make a positive impact on the places they visit.

We went to Alibaba's 24-hour shopping extravaganza that is like nothing in America, featuring a Mariah Carey performance and an online-shopping-themed Cirque du Soleil act. Here's what it reveals about the future of retail. (BABA)

alibaba gala

SHANGHAI, China — I've experienced the stampedes of Black Friday shoppers. I survived the Prime Day outage of 2018. And, like an increasing number of Americans, I've checked deals on my iPhone during Thanksgiving dinner.

But I have never seen a shopping event quite like Alibaba's Singles Day: 24 hours of massive sales, overwhelming festivities, and, bizarrely enough, Mariah Carey.

In the hours before Sunday, November 11, 2018, Alibaba kicked off its 10th year of Singles Day festivities in Shanghai. Twenty-four hours later, the Chinese e-commerce giant reported that customers spent $30.8 billion, or almost three times as much as the previous year's Black Friday and Cyber Monday shoppers spent combined.

This year, shoppers spent $35.8 billion on Singles Day.

I had the good fortune to be in Shanghai for the entire thing in 2018, witnessing the most over-the-top, futuristic, and exhausting shopping celebration I have ever seen.

Here's what it was like to take part in Alibaba's Singles Day, as well as what it means for the future of the retail industry:

SEE ALSO: Alibaba has raked in $35.8 billion and counting in Singles Day sales, crushing last year's results

Singles Day kicks off with a four-hour "gala." Imagine Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade had quadruplets with Prime Day, and you've got the general idea.

Most people watch the gala — basically a variety show featuring singers, performers, and Allen Iverson overseeing a basketball competition — on TV or on their phones.

People on their phones can shop deals on Alibaba sites such as Taobao and Tmall as they watch the show.

I was, however, actually at the gala — and experiencing the side effects of a mix of jet lag, cold medicine, and a truly wild production.

Sitting with other reporters and Alibaba communications staffers, I was immediately overstimulated, even without the ability to shop online.

The drama is intentional. Alibaba has worked to transform Singles Day from a day of deals to what the company's chief marketing officer, Chris Tung, called a sort of Christmas for brands and customers.

"It has evolved dramatically over the last 10 years to become a true festival," Tung told me the weekend before the 2018 Singles' Day event.

Among the celebrities at the gala, at least one was doing double duty as an Alibaba merchant: Miranda Kerr.

Kerr launched her skincare brand, KORA Organics, on Alibaba's Tmall in 2018.

"It's such a unique event that combines shopping and entertainment in a way that I haven't seen before," Kerr told me.

Our interview was conducted via telephone, with me sitting in the back of a parked car 200 feet from where Kerr was backstage at the gala. Again, it was a hectic scene before the gala even started.

In the arena, fans lapped up the action.

Boy bands!

Romantic duets!

An endless stream of celebrities!

Considering that Alibaba kicked off the gala only two years prior, in 2016, it was slightly shocking how much enthusiasm and star power the company packed in.

It isn't uncommon for American retail giants to get celebrities to perform at events like investor days — stars at Walmart's shareholders event have included Katy Perry and James Corden — but with the potential exception of Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, I had never seen something like this.

And that was before Mariah Carey showed up.

But alas, I had already left the gala before the great diva performed.

I had moved on to the nearby media center, where a robot was mixing cocktails and coffees.

Alibaba's showiness didn't stop with the gala. Hundreds of journalists from around the world were invited to report from the media center, which also served as a showcase for Alibaba's various tech innovations.

In addition to making lattés, these robots could bring food to tables in restaurants and deliver room service in hotels.

The waiter bots are already in use in restaurants in locations of Hema, Alibaba's supermarket chain.

Additionally, the robots were almost uniformly cute — crucial to gaining customers' trust.

However, the robots aren't the main event.

That would be the mega-screen displaying GMV, or gross merchandise volume.

In other words, the screen keeps track of how much money is being spent in online sales through various Alibaba platforms on Singles Day.

An emcee of sorts counts down until midnight. Then 11/11 finally begins.

It was a swift start. With sales from preloaded shopping carts going through in the seconds after midnight, the GMV figure exploded.

Within 10 minutes, Alibaba hit $4.68 billion, already eclipsing estimated sales figures for Amazon's 36-hour Prime Day event.

Alibaba continued to highlight massive numbers well after I stumbled back to the hotel in the wee hours of the morning.

Alibaba's emphasis on GMV is a blessing and a curse for the company, according to some experts.

While the sheer magnitude of the figure helps generate attention, the company's self-celebration doesn't allow for much wiggle room if growth slows.

"The whole world is looking at it — which puts a lot of pressure" on Alibaba, Daniel Zipser, a McKinsey & Company senior partner who leads its consumer and retail practice in Greater China, told me.

Yet 11/11 must go on.

For me as a reporter, November 11 was a blur of visiting Starbucks (an Alibaba partner), speaking with certain executives, and waiting for some others to show up.

Jack Ma, Alibaba's famous founder, showed up at the media center both nights but didn't speak to journalists. Instead, he merely smiled at the GMV screen, snapping a photo on his phone as the company crossed another landmark.

Through it all, the GMV chart just kept climbing.

At the end of the day, Alibaba set another Singles Day record. But more than that, the company did it with a sense of drama that no modern American company could replicate.

The GMV marker topped $30 billion at the end of Singles Day 2018. For comparison, online sales on Black Friday reached $5 billion in 2017, according to Adobe Analytics data, while Cyber Monday sales were roughly $6.6 billion.

As frantic Black Friday masses lose momentum to online shopping, Alibaba has figured out how to bring the hectic overstimulation to e-commerce.

Alibaba is increasingly emphasizing its plans to bridge the gap between online and offline retail with initiatives like the adorable robot waiter. American companies would be well-served to pay attention to the spectacle that is likely to follow.

The life of Donald Trump Jr., who once lived out of a truck, didn't speak to his father for a year, and is making waves on a book tour with his girlfriend

Donald Trump Jr. speaks at the Western Conservative Summit at the Colorado Convention Center July 12, 2019. (

  • Donald Trump Jr., son of President Donald Trump, is an executive vice president of the Trump Organization.
  • The 41-year-old, who has five children, has lived the majority of his life in the shadow of his father and sister Ivanka, but since his dad became president, his outspoken, anti-political-correct stance has come into its own.
  • While Ivanka and his father are seen as city-dwellers, Donald Jr's love of guns and the outdoors has made him a vital tool to connect with American voters.
  • And while his relationship with his father has been far from smooth — he refused to speak to him for a year when he was 12 — he's now one of his dad's most effective political tools.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Donald Trump Jr. has become his father's son.

He hasn't always seen eye-to-eye with his famous dad, but since Donald Trump Sr. become president, Jr. has come back into the fold. In November he told The Wall Street Journal, "It took me probably 41 years to realize I was a lot more like my dad than either of us had ever thought. Our default mode is, I guess, attack."

He used to be the detail-oriented and business-focused child, content to leave the spotlight to his father and his sister Ivanka, but he's now a fundraising regular, often traveling the country to speak on his father's behalf. For the 2018 midterms, he made more than 70 campaign appearances, according to the Washington Post.

It's been a busy few years for the eldest son who was also put in charge of leading The Trump Organization with his brother Eric. He was embroiled in the Russia investigation and weathered a messy divorce.

Most recently, his book tour for "Triggered: How the Left Thrives on Hate and Wants to Silence Us," is making waves.

Here's his life so far.

Donald Trump Jr. was born in Manhattan on December 31, 1977, to Donald Trump and his first wife, Ivana. As the first-born, he was named after his father. But according to the Los Angeles Times, he was not always the adoring son.

As a child, he spent six to eight weeks during the summers in Czechoslovakia with his grandparents. Trump learned his outdoor skills from his maternal grandfather Zelnicek, who he was particularly close with, and who acted a role model for him growing up. His grandfather let him loose, telling him, "there is the woods. See you at dark."

It was a stark contrast to life as a Trump in America, where he was accompanied by bodyguards. At 12, he was whisked off to boarding school with his brother Eric after his parents' divorce. He went to The Hill School in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, for high school.

In 2004, he told New York Magazine it had been tough being 12. "You're not quite a man, but you think you are. You think you know everything. Being driven into school every day and you see the front page and it's: 'Divorce! THE BEST SEX I EVER HAD!' And you don't even know what that means. At that age, kids are naturally cruel."

His father made the divorce a public affair, which wasn't easy on Trump Jr., who was more aware of what was going on than his younger siblings. According to Vanity Fair, he yelled at his father, “You don't love us! You don't even love yourself. You just love your money!" He then spent a year refusing to speak to his father, hanging up on him whenever called.

After high school, Trump went to the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Finance, where his father and sister also went. He studied finance and real estate. He also rowed crew, joined a fraternity, and garnered a reputation as a big partier.

Sources: The Trump Organization, The New York Times

At university, he didn't try and live up to his father's reputation. Jennifer Ireland Kubis, who knew him there, said, "He wasn't into the gold. He was trying to escape it." Scott Melker, another classmate, wrote a viral Facebook post where he said every memory he had of Trump was of him stumbling around campus falling over or passing out while drinking. He also said Trump "absolutely despised his father, and hated the attention that his last name afforded him.”

After graduation, Jr. took a year off from studies and work. He lived in the back of a truck in Aspen, Colorado, where he hunted, fished, and occasionally worked as a bartender. He's said he was the first graduate of Wharton to do such a thing. It was during this time he developed his patience and need for silence, according to the Washington Post.

In 2001, he was arrested for public drunkenness in New Orleans during Mardi Gras, and spent half a day in jail.

His love of nature was a key factor in him later giving up drinking. He spoke about it in 2016 at a fundraising speech in Salt Lake City. "I know that the benefits I got from being in the woods, from being in a duck blind, from being in a tree stand at 5 o'clock in the morning, kept me out of so much other trouble I would have gotten into in my life," he said. In 2003 he officially quit drinking.

In September 2001, he returned from "the wilderness," and went to work for his father. His mother once said, "When they turned 21, I handed them over to him and said, 'Here's the finished product.'"

In 2003, Trump's father introduced him to Vanessa Kay Haydon, a model who once dated Leonardo DiCaprio. They soon started dating.

It was a public affair and made even more so when Trump accepted a free $100,000 ring in exchange for recreating his proposal in a New Jersey mall. Along with a critical New York Post headline, which called him "the cheapest Gaillionaire," his father took a shot on at him "Larry King Live," where he said, "You have a name that is hot as a pistol, you have to be very careful with things like this.”

The couple married on November 12, 2005, at the Trump family's Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.

The couple had five children: Kai (born in 2007), Donald III (2009), Tristan (2011), Spencer (2012), and Chloe (2014). Their New York apartment was described to the Los Angeles Times as "controlled chaos."

It didn't take long before Trump rose to be executive vice president of the Trump Organization. After his first completed project, he told his dad the building should say Trump Jr. His father disagreed. Still, Trump Jr. was put in charge of various building projects, hotels, condos, and golf courses. Notably, he took the lead on constructing the Trump International Hotel and Tower in Chicago.

Trump was a dutiful son. He appeared as a boardroom adviser with Ivanka on their father's reality-TV show "The Apprentice," as well as a judge for some of his father's Miss USA pageants. In 2010, Trump started his own building-materials company, Titan Atlas Manufacturing, with two business partners. But by 2012, the company ceased operations after tax liens were filed for unpaid sales and withholding taxes.

Titan Atlas continued with legal troubles through 2016. A lawsuit involving the company brought by Saint-Gobain Adfors, an international construction company, has been pending since April 2016. The actual warehouse has also caused issues as it's environmentally contaminated.

On June 16, 2015, Donald Trump announced he was running for president. When his father asked him what he knew about politics, Jr. told him he'd watched the news the previous night, which was enough to put him to work. And Trump Jr. worked hard for his father, rising at 4.30 a.m. and working late every night. He introduced him at rallies, gave interviews, and ramped up his Twitter presence.

Trump's hunting background, in stark contrast to the more refined personas of his sister and father, was harnessed by the campaign as a way to connect with many Americans.

Source: The Washington Post

But his love of hunting also caused some issues during the campaign when a picture surfaced of him and Eric posing with a dead leopard from 2010. Possibly the worst photo for Trump Jr. was one where he was holding a knife in one hand and a severed elephant tail in the other. He didn't appear too fazed by the online vitriol and said to one critic, "I'm not going to run and hide because the PETA crazies don't like me."

Source: The Washington Post, The New York Times

As his father ran for the presidency, Jr. continued to stir the political pot. In one tweet he compared Syrian refugees to Skittles. "If I had a bowl of skittles and I told you just three would kill you, would you take a handful?" the tweet said. "That's our Syrian refugee problem."

Another time when complaining about the media, he said the media would be "warming up the gas chamber" if Republicans acted like 2016 rival Hillary Clinton. The Trump campaign later said clarified his comments were about capital punishment and not the Holocaust.

As Roger Stone, one of Trump senior's former confidants, put it to the Washington Post, "Basically, Trump Jr. is the voice of undiluted Trumpism."

After his father won the presidency, Trump joined the transition team's executive committee. In early 2017, Trump spoke at a fundraising dinner, and said he thought that would be it, that he would be out of politics after Election Day. But he didn't stop. He said he couldn't.

But since his dad's ascension to president, Trump Jr. has been one of his father's most vocal defenders. The Los Angeles Times described him as a "virtual attack dog." In June 2017, he blasted former FBI Director James Comey, posting over 80 tweets during Comey's live testimony before a congressional committee.

In March 2017, Trump fell into political hot water when he tweeted a quote from London Mayor Sadiq Khan that made it look as if he were relaxed about terrorism in London. Trump's tweet came after a terrorist attack in Westminster, but Khan's quote was 6 months old.

In July 2017, Trump became one of the key figures in the Russia election meddling controversy, after The New York Times reported that he'd taken a meeting with a Russian lawyer who told him she had damaging information about Hillary Clinton. Instead of calling the FBI in response to the information, he said, "I love it."

Sources: Business Insider, The Guardian

The news led some to raise new questions about whether the Trump campaign colluded with the Kremlin to meddle in the election. And it briefly made Donald the most Googled child of Donald Trump. In the end, the former special counsel Robert Mueller found there was no coordination with Russia and the Trump campaign.

In March 2018, Trump's home life took a hit when Vanessa filed for divorce. The two battled it out in court to decide the terms of their split.

In May 2018, Trump started dating former Fox News host Kimberly Guilfoyle. She's since become a senior adviser for the Trump campaign. According to the Washington Post, Trump was quickly using his love life for material on the campaign trail.

And despite his comments about pulling away from politics, Trump instead stopped trying to expanding the Trump Organization, which he told friends was difficult to do while his father was president, according to the Washington Post.

He's become sought after for his versatility at rallies and fundraisers. For the 2018 midterms, Trump made about 70 campaign stops to help boost morale for Republican candidates. Yet despite his appearances, a White House official told the Washington Post he probably had less influence at the White House compared to Ivanka and Eric.

In 2018, he continued to be prolific on Twitter. He retweeted conspiracy theories about businessman George Soros being a Nazi, he liked a tweet that said migrant children separated from their parents by Trump's administration had been coached by liberals, and he attacked CNN several times, including anchor Anderson Cooper, based on a 10-year-old photo.

In 2019, Trump went after Hunter Biden, Sen. Joe Biden's son, for his role as a board member on a Ukrainian energy company. Although there was no evidence of wrongdoing by the Bidens, he said, without any apparent irony, that he wished his name was Hunter Biden so he could make millions off his father.

In November 2019, he published "Triggered: How the Left Thrives on Hate and Wants to Silence Us," which criticizes "PC culture," as well as the special counsel Robert Mueller. It's been touted as the "book the leftist elites don't want you to read."

In November, Trump and Guilfoyle appeared on the 5000th episode of "The View," to promote his book, but it quickly became a heated back and forth, in particular with Megan McCain, late Sen. John McCain's daughter, who asked how he felt about the pain his family had caused. Trump said he didn't feel good, but he and his family were doing what they had to for America.

On his book tour, loud conservative supporters heckled him offstage at UCLA when he refused to answer questions. He said he was trying to avoid giving the media soundbites that could be distorted by the left wing social media. But the crowd wasn't buying it.

Sources: The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian

As for Trump's future, he's skirted around questions about his own political ambitions, and said he's focused on his father's reelection in 2020. But who knows what comes after that. He's no longer living in his father's shadow.

mac laptop macbook Adobe photoshop

Maybe you're starting a band that can't afford a marketing team to make posters just yet. Or perhaps you're a frantic dog owner looking for a missing pup.

Either way, it's undeniable — knowing how to slap text over a photo is certainly a useful life skill.

And Photoshop 2020 users have a huge breadth of formatting and design options at their fingertips when it comes to throwing text on an image.

Here are the basics to get you started with adding text to your next Photoshop project.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Adobe Photoshop (From $129.99 at Best Buy)

MacBook Pro (From $1,299.99 at Best Buy)

How to add text in Photoshop

1. Upload the photo. In this case, I downloaded my photo from Google Drive and dropped the image into Photoshop by dragging and dropping it over the icon, a feature on Mac computers.

NapoInitialImage

2. I choose an image where I could easily identify dark and light areas to place text. If, however, you need to modify the background to make the text more legible, check out our article, "How to change the background color of your photos in Photoshop to make your images more striking."

3. Click the icon on the left side toolbar that looks like a serif font capital "T." Select Horizontal Type Tool. A text box with latin text should appear.

NapoLoremIpsum

4. To quickly swipe clean the included "Lorem Ipsum" dummy text, type Ctrl or Command+A, and then backspace or delete, depending on your operating system.

5. Adjust the font color to contrast from the background (if you need to) using the main options bar. There will be a rectangular color tile toward the center of the horizontal menu.

NapoColorFont

6. Keep in mind that whenever you make changes, you'll need to hit return or enter, or click the checkmark on the main options bar, to secure your edits and additions.

7. In the "Properties" panel, you can adjust the font under "Character."

NapoFinal

Be sure to save your work.

Even as you save your every move while navigating Photoshop, your final product itself needs to be assigned a home on your computer's hard drive, an external drive, or in a cloud service.

15 people who became billionaires in 2019 — and 14 who lost their status in the three-comma club

juul Adam Bowen and James Monsees billionaires

Not everyone who becomes a billionaire stays one.

A proliferation of IPOs created several new billionaires in 2019 — but a turbulent stock market also knocked many entrepreneurs out of the three comma club.

Last year was not an easy year to be a billionaire, Business Insider previously reported. 2018 was the first time in seven years that high net worth individuals saw their fortunes shrink, according to French technology consulting firm Capgemini. Billionaires across the globe lost 7% of their collective net worth in 2018 due to market instability at the end of the year, Wealth-X also found in its 2019 Billionaire Census. Slowing economic growth across the globe and trade tensions also contributed to the wealth drop, according to Wealth-X.

Keep reading to learn more about the people who became billionaires — and those who lost their billionaire status — in 2019.

Social media and makeup mogul Kylie Jenner made headlines when she was declared "the world's youngest self-made billionaire" by Forbes in March.

Net worth: $1 billion as of March 2019

Jenner, who turned 22 in August, has built up a cosmetics empire, starred alongside her family in "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" as well as in her own spin-off show "Life of Kylie," started a clothing line with her sister, and made millions promoting products on Instagram.

Forbes estimated that Jenner's company, Kylie Cosmetics, is worth $900 million. That plus the cash she has pulled in from the business brings her to billionaire status, Forbes said.

Many have criticized Forbes calling Jenner "self-made," saying she was born into wealth and privilege, as Business Insider's Katie Warren previously reported. In February, Jenner responded to the backlash in an interview with Paper magazine, saying, "The self-made thing is true" and adding that her parents "cut her off at the age of 15."

Proactiv founders Katie Ronan and Kathy Fields were also declared billionaires by Forbes in March.

Net worths: $1.5 billion each as of March 2019

Ronan and Fields, 64 and 61 respectively, met when they were young dermatology residents, fresh out of medical school, according to their website. They may be best known for inventing acne treatment line Proactiv, but it's their multi-level marketing skincare line Ronan + Fields that made the duo of dermatologists ultrawealthy — Rodan + Fields' 300,000 independent consultants have sold $1.5 billion of cosmetics in 2017, Forbes reported in March.

Zoom's stock soared in the video-conferencing company's public trading debut in April, making CEO Eric Yuan a billionaire.

Net worth: $3 billion as of April 2019

Before he founded Zoom in 2011, Yuan was the vice president of engineering at Cisco. He first came to the US fom China in 1997 after unsuccessfully applying for a visa eight times, Yuan said in a 2017 interview with Thrive Global. On his ninth try, Yuan was accepted, and he came to the country without speaking any English, CNBC reports. Yuan, Zoom's founder and CEO, owns 20.5% of his company's stock.

Jay-Z became "hip-hop's first billionaire" in June, according to Forbes.

Net worth: $1 billion as of June 2019

The rapper has earned millions from sellout tours and chart-topping albums over the course of his nearly 30-year career, Business Insider's Mark Abadi previously reported. But music is far from his only money-making venture.

Over the years, Jay-Z has parlayed his success in the hip-hop world into a fortune earned as an entrepreneur. His business ventures include entertainment labels, a clothing line, upscale alcohol brands, and the music-streaming service Tidal.

Slack founder and CEO Stewart Butterfield was also declared a billionaire in June, after the workplace messaging app's direct listing.

Net worth: $1.6 billion as of June 2019

Slack's market debut may have been what made Butterfield, 46, a billionaire, but it wasn't the first successful company he founded, Business Insider's Megan Hernbroth and Rebecca Aydin previously reported. Butterfield also founded photo-sharing site Flickr, which he sold to Yahoo for more than $20 million in 2013.

Both Slack and Flickr grew out of failed attempts to create an online video game

The launch of a new tech-focused stock market in China minted three billionaires in a single day in July.

Net worths: Between $1.3 billion and $2.4 billion as of July 2o19

Launched on July 22, the STAR market was designed to compete with Nasdaq to trade China's largest tech companies, Business Insider previously reported. By the end of the first day of trading, the market's 25 stocks were up an average of 140%, according to CNN Business. The highest performer, semi-conductor part maker Anji Microelectronics Technology, closed up 400%.

Three new Chinese billionaires were minted on July 22:

  2. Cao Ji, the chairman of lithium battery producer Zhejiang Hangke Technology, now has a net worth of $2.2 billion, according to Bloomberg.
  3. The founder and chairman of Arcsoft Corp, Hui Deng, is worth $1.3 billion, according to Bloomberg.

SmileDirectClub founders Jordan Katzman and Alex Fenkell became two of the youngest billionaires in the US in September after the company's IPO.

Katzman's net worth: $1.2 billion as of September 2019

Fenkell's net worth: $1 billion as of September 2019

Shares of Katzman's and Fenkell's direct-to-consumer dental-product company SmileDirectClub closed down 28% after its first day of trading, but its market cap of $6.4 billion made Katzman and Fenkell — each of whom owns close to a quarter of the company's class B shares — billionaires.

The two, who both wore metal braces, became close friends. They came up with the idea for SmileDirectClub while reminiscing about their childhood years and wondering whether they could find a less embarrassing and cheaper way to straighten teeth, according to SmileDirectClub's website.

A 24-year-old Wharton graduate who has posted photos of himself partying with Rihanna and Bella Hadid became a billionaire on October 23, thanks to a generous "gift" from his parents.

Net worth: $3.8 billion as of October 2019

Eric Tse now owns 2.7 billion shares, or 21.45%, of Sino Biopharmaceutical, the company founded by his father, the company said in a statement October 23.

The company said Tse's parents told the board they transferred the shares to Tse to "refine the management and inheritance of family wealth" and planned for Tse to "hold the relevant shares in long-term." But Sino Biopharmaceutical said Tse's new status would "not have any material impact on the business operations of the Company."

Despite having famous friends, Tse has said he doesn't want to be recognized for his wealth.

Tse "indicated that in response to nomination for Billionaire List or wealth ranking organized by media or other organizations, he will endeavor not to participate in such rankings in his own name, and would recommend participating in such nominations in the name of the Tse Ping family," Sino Biopharmaceutical said.

Oracle co-CEO Safra Catz is one of only a few people to become a billionaire from a company she did not found.

Net worth: $1.1 billion as of November 2019

Catz, 57, took over as co-CEO of software developer Oracle after the retirement of fellow billionaire Larry Ellison in 2014, according to Forbes. Catz is now one of the highest-paid women in the world, making $135 million in 2017, Forbes reported.

Early Uber employee Ryan Graves was added to Forbes' Billionaires List this year.

Net worth: $1.6 billion as of March 2019

Canada Goose CEO Dani Reiss became a billionaire in March, when Forbes estimated his net worth to be $1.3 billion.

Net worth: $1.3 billion as of March 2019

Reiss, 46, took over the luxury outerwear company founded by his grandfather in 2001, according to Forbes. He made his Forbes Billionaires List debut in 2019, two years after taking the celeb-adored retailer public.

Juul cofounders Adam Bowen and James Monsees had short-lived tenures as billionaires.

Net worths: $900 million each

One of the company's biggest investors, hedge fund Darsana Capital Partners, reportedly cut the company's valuation by more than a third on October 3 following increased attention from regulators. As a result, Juul cofounders Adam Bowen and James Monsees lost their billionaire status just ten months after attaining it, Business Insider previously reported.

Bowen and Monsees founded Juul after meeting on smoke breaks while studying product design at Stanford University in 2004, Business Insider previously reported. Ploom, a precursor to Juul, was launched in 2007 and first released Juul products in 2015. The company's Juul line was spun into a separate firm in 2017. The majority of the pair's respective net worths are tied to their 1.75% stakes in the e-cigarette maker, Forbes' Sergei Klebnikov reported.

Forever 21's cofounders lost their billionaire status in July — just three months before the fast-fashion retailer filed for bankruptcy in September.

Net worths: $800 million each

At the company's peak in 2015, Jin Sook and Do Won Chang had a combined net worth of $5.9 billion, Business Insider previously reported. Their combined fortune has fallen to $1.6 billion as the fast fashion chain enters bankruptcy proceedings. Forever 21 will close 350 stores across the globe, but will continue to operate in select locations and online.

The married couple founded Forever 21 in Los Angeles in 1984 after emigrating from South Korea three years prior. Their first location, originally called Fashion 21, was 900 square feet and stocked merchandise the Changs purchased at wholesale close-out sales, according to Forbes.

WeWork founder Adam Neumann's net worth plummeted $3.5 billion in just seven months.

Net worth: $600 million as of October 2019

The former WeWork CEO's net worth parallels the plunging valuation of his coworking empire following the company's up-and-down IPO adventure that saw it whipsaw from a $47 billion valuation to talk of bankruptcy in just six weeks.

The drop in Neumann's personal net worth from a peak of $4.1 billion was the result of the declining value of Neumann's 18% stake in WeWork, Forbes reported. WeWork was valued at $47 billion in January following an investment from Japanese investment firm Softbank. However, the company reportedly sought a valuation as low as $10 billion in September as public scrutiny over its steep losses and leadership structure threatened its IPOForbes now estimates that the company is worth "at most $2.8 billion."

But Neumann may have regained his billionaire status thanks to Softbank's bailout of WeWork, though estimates of his exact net worth vary.  The former CEO is worth "at least one billion," according to Bloomberg. As of November 11, Forbes also puts Neumann's real-time net worth at $1 billion.

WeWork cofounder Miguel McKelvey also lost his membership in the three comma club between March and October.

Net worth: $400 million as of November 2019

McKelvey founded WeWork in 2010 alongside Neumann and Neumann's now-wife Rebekah Neumann, Business Insider previously reported. Concern from potential investors over the company's finances and corporate governance issues pushed Neumann to resign as WeWork's CEO on September 24.

Forbes estimated McKelvey to be worth $2.9 billion in March.

RyanAir's falling stock price knocked CEO Michael O'Leary off Forbes' Billionaires List in March.

Net worth: $1.1 billion in 2018

O'Leary, 58, has served as the CEO of the cut-rate airline since 1994, according to Forbes. O'Leary once compared RyanAir's business model to that of Wal-Mart, according to Forbes, saying the airline aims to "pile it high and sell it cheap."

The airline struggled with falling profits, Brexit concerns, the Boeing 737 Max grounding, and pilot strikes throughout 2018, sinking the company's shares. RyanAir's declining stock price brought O'Leary's net worth below $1 billion, The Independent's Samantha McCaughren reported in January, though his current net worth is unknown.

Four heirs to the Barilla pasta fortune also dropped off Forbes' Billionaires List in March.

Net worth: $1.1 billion each in 2018

Siblings Emanuella, Guido, Luca, and Paolo Barilla share an 85% stake in the largest company in the world, Forbes reported in 2016. At the time, Forbes estimated that the siblings were worth about $1.5 billion each.

Guido Barilla serves as the Barilla's chairman, while Luca Barilla and Paolo Barilla are both vice-chairmen.

Isaac Larian, the CEO of Little Tikes and Bratz dolls maker MGA Entertainment, was also kicked off of Forbes' list.

Net worth: $1.1 billion in 2018

At its peak, Brandes had over $100 billion under management, but now has only $31 billion, Forbes reported. Brandes left the firm in February 2018.

  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

If you've ever been without internet, you've probably been disappointed that Steam doesn't work like it should.

However, if you set Steam to offline mode, you can play single-player or local multiplayer games anywhere.

But there's a catch to this — when you activate offline mode, you'll need to be connected to the internet, so Steam can verify your account. This means you'll need to plan going into offline mode in advance, before your computer loses its internet connection.

Here's how to find the setting.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

The best men's dress socks

  • Socks might seem like an unimportant to style, but they can play a big role in helping you create a unique and fashionable look.
  • Soft and breathable merino wool, fine English craftsmanship, great attention to detail, and a royal pedigree place the Turnbull and Asser over-the-calf dress socks among the best dress socks that money can buy.

When it comes to traditional menswear, dress socks aren't exactly the most exciting topic to read about. But if you want to upgrade your style, then your sock game needs to be on point. The wrong socks can spoil an otherwise great outfit, and worse, poor socks can make your feet sweaty and uncomfortable, slide down your leg, and pool around your ankles, looking and feeling like a mess.

You likely already have some cheap dress socks in your closet, and if you're like most guys, you probably defaulted to black one. There's a good chance that they're not made of great materials, either. Attention to detail is one of the main principles of traditional menswear, as it's little things like your choice of necktie or pocket square that can make your break an outfit.

Your dress sock are no exception to this rule. If it's time to upgrade, then read on, keeping in mind these two basic rules for dress sock shopping: Avoid socks made from 100% synthetic fabrics and invest in well-crafted pairs that fit your feet and stay up properly. That pretty much rules out most of what you're likely to find at your local department store.

But don't despair: To give your sartorial flair a leg up, we've picked out five pairs of dress socks that we think every man should have in his drawer, from timeless solid-colored classics to some more colorful pairs to wear when you're feeling bold.

Here are the best men's dress socks you can buy:

Updated on 11/4/2019 by Amir Ismael: Updated formatting, links, and prices. Added Pantherella as best spring and summer socks, Chup as best fall and winter socks, and Happy Socks as best fun and colorful socks.

The best dress socks overall

Crafted in England of fine merino wool, the Turnbull and Asser over-the-calf dress socks are fit for a prince — literally — and they're worth every penny.

Whether you're buying your first nice suit or you're just starting to fill out your dress sock drawer, the basic rules of menswear always apply: Keep it simple, keep it solid, and invest in quality, as you're going to be wearing these staples a lot. Solid-colored basics are easily the most versatile clothes in your closet and will continue to get the most play well after you've built up a rotation that incorporates brighter colors and bolder patterns.

For most environments and occasions, you simply can't beat classic "workhorse" colors like navy blue and charcoal gray, because these two shades play nicely with almost everything in your closet. Our pick for the best solid dress socks money can buy comes from Turnbull and Asser, a historic English menswear brand that holds a royal warrant from the British crown.

The socks, available in navy and charcoal as well as a number of other colors, are made in England from a blend of fine merino wool and nylon. The merino is warm yet breathable, while both the wool and the nylon are better at wicking moisture away from your feet than other common fabrics like cotton. The nylon adds some durability to the merino, too, and the hand-finished toes are seamless, giving them a better shape and fit over your feet compared to cheaply made machine-stitched socks.

When it comes to dress socks, I recommend keeping it over the calf for your workhorse pairs, for the simple reason that they will stay up better as you wear them throughout your busy day. Another nice touch regarding fit is that Turnbull and Asser offers these socks in a number of different sizes.

They're fairly costly at $45, but if you want the best, then Turnbull and Asser's socks are it. Do yourself a favor and treat your feet to at least one pair. These dress socks are fit for a prince — rather literally, in fact, given that the brand's royal warrant was granted by Prince Charles.

Pros: Made in England, merino wool is warm yet breathable and wicks moisture away from your feet, over-the-calf length is great for all-day wear, available in a wide variety of colors, and the seamless toe provides a proper fit and extra comfort

Cons: Fairly expensive at $45 a pair

The best patterned dress socks

These English-made argyle dress socks from Brooks Brothers are ones that grandpa himself would be proud to wear.

In the world of patterned dress socks, argyle remains king. Your grandfather wore it, your dad wore it, and you should wear it. Unlike some other old-school patterns like paisley (which guys seem to either love or hate), argyle has stubbornly stood the test of time — at least for dress socks, if not for larger clothing items like sweaters. These ones, from the historic American menswear brand Brooks Brothers, hit that old-school style nail right on the head.

Argyle is a subtle and conservative way to add some color and character to your dressier outfits, the diagonal pattern slightly breaks up the sleek vertical lines of your suit without being distracting, and it generally doesn't clash with vertically or horizontally oriented patterns like stripes or plaid.

The Brooks Brothers argyle dress socks are made in England of merino wool and nylon, which is a very popular blend for sock fabric owing to the breathability and moisture-wicking properties of the materials. This stands in contrast to textiles like cotton which tend to absorb sweat instead of move it away from your foot for evaporation.

Brooks Brothers offers these socks in a variety of different colors with enough choices to pair with just about any suits or pants you own. Matching argyle to your outfit is pretty straightforward: Keep the sock's primary shade in the same family as that of your trousers, and use the other colors in the sock to complement your shirt, tie, or pocket square if you want to.

Pros: Made in England, nice blend of merino wool and nylon, the argyle pattern is timeless and versatile, and the socks are available in a number of colors

Cons: Unavailable in over-the-calf length, and no individual sizing

The best lightweight dress socks for spring and summer

A unique cotton blend makes these Pantherella socks are the perfect choice for staying cool while you're rocking your spring and summer suits.

One of the biggest challenges men who wear suits face is how to stay cool in the summer without sacrificing style. To solve this problem, many favor lighter fabrics, ditching heavier wools and all-cotton clothing in favor of more breathable weaves like linen and linen blends.

UK-based clothing brand Pantherella has high-quality, well-priced socks made from linen, cotton, and nylon that will keep your feet cool even on hot days.

The linen imparts extra breathability to the cotton fabric, while the nylon brings moisture-wicking properties to the socks. The cotton is there to add body to the linen and the nylon also offers extra durability and "cling" to better hug your leg.

This unique fabric blend is what sets the Pantherella linen-blend dress socks apart from the sea of wool and all-cotton socks and makes them a superior alternative to these for warm-weather wear. The blue houndstooth color pairs well with blue, grey, and tan suits.

Pros: Made in the UK of Italian-blended yarn, the cotton and linen fabric is lightweight and breathable, and the lighter color is perfect for summer suiting

Cons: Limited color availability, no individual sizing

The best warm dress socks for fall and winter

With a chunky knit, thick wool yarn, and earth-toned pattern, the Chup Montana socks go just as well with casual boots and jeans as they do with your favorite suit.

Boots tend to get a lot more play in the colder months and often call for thicker socks that provide both warmth and extra foot padding. A pair with a thicker yarn, like these socks from Chup, is a better choice than your average wool dress sock.

I'll just come right out and say it: These aren't explicitly "dress" socks, and, in fact, you could just as easily wear them casually with your favorite jeans or chinos. They'll still work with dress shoes, but the chunky, warm knit of Chup socks begs to be worn with boots, be they casual fall boots or a pair of sleek Chelseas. Of course, the socks won't be all that visible given that boots cover your ankles, but your feet will be nice and comfortable all the same.

The Chup socks are crafted in Japan from a blend of wool, cotton, and nylon. The substantial yarn is chunky, and the wintry pattern is fun but conservative with tones of brown, blue, and gray. They're somewhat expensive at $35, but given their comfort, style, versatility, and value, they're a good addition to your wardrobe.

Pros: Thick wool blend is great for colder weather and for wear with dress boots, nice pattern with colors that complement earth-toned fall suits and pants

Cons: No individual sizing

The best fun and colorful dress socks

Happy Socks' fun colors, patterns, and collaborations are the perfect way to liven up your mundane work attire.

A put-together business suit should generally be conservative, especially when worn in the workplace, but conservative doesn't have to mean boring. Accessories like ties and pocket squares, as well as lesser-seen clothing items like dress socks, provide the perfect chance for you to have a little fun and liven up an otherwise fairly simple outfit.

Colorful socks, in particular, have become an increasingly popular way for men to get a little adventurous with their dressier clothing. Happy Socks is a booming Swedish brand with the mission to put smiles on the faces of people all around the world and give them unique senses of style through fun sock designs.

From polka dots and stripes to palm trees and strawberries, you'll find a plethora of unique designs for your feet at around $14 a pair. The brand is also big on limited-edition collaborations. To name a few, they've teamed up with The Beatles, Rolling Stones, and Andy Warhol on some fun sock designs.

The best part about Happy Socks is that you can wear them anywhere. You can use them to liven up your office attire or you can wear them casually with your favorite jeans and sneakers.

Pros: Plenty of colors and collaborations, affordable price

Cons: None to speak of

What to look for in a pair of dress socks

While hardly a comprehensive quality and style guide, here's a quick and handy run-down on what you should know when filling out your sock drawer:

Length: Dress socks today come in two lengths: mid-calf, which come roughly halfway up your lower leg, and over the calf (formerly called "hose"), which come up almost to the knee. In the past, dress socks were often held up with dedicated sock suspenders or garters which anchored the sock to the bottom of your dress shirt. Thankfully, modern materials and manufacturing methods now allow for socks that stay up much more reliably.

Whichever length you prefer, the important thing is that your socks must actually stay up. Over the calf socks will always be better at this, but almost all socks today feature some sort of elastic at the opening to keep them put on your leg. Nonetheless, if you find most mid-calf socks slouching and pooling around your ankles after extended wear, then consider springing for over the calf socks instead.

Material: As with other articles of men's clothing, a good rule for dress socks is to avoid ones that are made of 100% synthetic materials, as these don't breathe well and are generally favored for their low manufacturing cost rather than for their quality.

Natural fibers like cotton and wool are a better choice, although with dress socks, these fabrics are typically blended with synthetic components to increase durability and fit. Dress socks are usually fairly thin and light as well; even wool ones will not be nearly as thick as those you'd wear with hiking boots.

Cotton is common, but among natural fabrics, it's is the least breathable and tends to absorb moisture, so all-cotton socks not great for hot weather (although cotton is often blended with wool or linen to mitigate this problem). Wool is great year-round, as it keeps your feet warm in the colder seasons but breathes and wicks sweat in warm weather. Wool socks should generally be washed either by hand or with your machine's gentle cycle, and should usually not be washed or dried using heat.

Color: An enduring misconception that still gets repeated often is that your socks should match your shoes. Your solid-colored dress socks should actually match your trousers. They don't have to be the exact same color, and are best kept a shade darker or lighter — for example, charcoal grey socks with mid-grey suit trousers.

Patterned dress socks let you break up an otherwise basic outfit with some color and visual texture. When keeping it on the conservative side, go for patterns like stripes or argyle in muted tones with the primary color complementing your trousers.

In more casual settings, you can have some fun with brightly-colored socks that complement another part of your outfit like your shirt, tie, or pocket square, just don't match them up exactly.
