As millennials age and prepare to become homeowners, they tend to settle down in suburbs rather than big cities.

Realtor.com recently complied a list of the hottest zip codes in 2019 — places where residents, especially millennials, are paid well and where the housing is affordable.

To determine the best markets, Realtor.com looked at homes in over 16,000 zip codes that sell in an average of 20 days and have three times more views online than the average Realtor.com listing. Additionally, they narrowed the list down to places where residents are employed at higher rates and earn more money than the national median, and where millennials in particular make up a sizable share of the homeowner population.

Keep reading for a look at the 30 hottest zip codes for house-hunting millennials. Note that figures for median listing prices, percentages of new mortgages held by millennials, and millennial median household income in 2019 in all areas have been provided by Realtor.com.

28% of millennials only paid off their student loans thanks to help from friends and family

college student graduate

To pay off student-loan debt, some millennials are turning to outside help.

About 20% of millennial respondents to a recent survey from Insider and Morning Consult said they've successfully paid off a student loan. Of those respondents, 28% said they've paid off debt with financial help from friends and family.

The survey polled 2,096 Americans about their financial health, debt, and earnings for a new series, "The State of Our Money." More than 670 respondents were millennials, defined as ages 23 to 38 in 2019.

They were more likely than other generations in general to say they've received help from family in paying off debt. Given that this survey is self-reported, it's possible that millennials were being more truthful than their elders. However, it's also possible that millennials have needed (and gotten) more help with their massive loan burdens.

These findings underscore millennials' now-familiar financial picture.

As of 2019, student-loan debt is at an all-time high with a national total of $1.5 trillion. According to Student Loan Hero, the average student-loan debt per graduating student in 2018 who took out loans was a whopping $29,800.

The weight of this debt is hindering millennials' ability to save. More than half of indebted millennial respondents in a previous Insider and Morning Consult survey said attending college wasn't worth the student loans.

It's not surprising, then, that many would take financial assistance from others to get that burden off their plates — especially when they're already used to doing so for other expenses. More than half of Americans (53%) aged 21 to 37 have received financial assistance from a parent, guardian, or family member since turning 21, according to the 2018 Country Financial Security Index

Paying off student-loan debt is the most significant life milestone millennials think they can achieve, according to a survey by personal finance company SoFi. Thirty-five percent of millennials said so — more than percentage of respondents who thought traditional milestones like buying a home or starting a family were the most important.

The best sponges

best sponge

  • Scrubbing dirty dishes and surfaces is less of a pain with the right sponge. We tested several sponges to find the best ones.
  • Scrub Daddy's innovative sponge is our top pick because it's effective, has good scrubbing power, and dries fast to avoid mold and mildew.

You know you're not even fooling yourself anymore when you say that you're just letting the dishes soak in the sink. Really, the sink has become a sort of purgatory for your dirty pots, pans, bowls, utensils, and everything else in your kitchen. And we get it — doing the dishes isn't exactly anyone's idea of a good time. But with the right sponge, you may be able to take some of the pain out of this particularly nasty chore.

When it comes to picking the best sponge for your cleaning needs, you'll want to ask yourself a few questions. First, how much scrubbing do you regularly find yourself doing? Unless you consist on a diet of oil-less soups, it's likely that a lot of your dirty dishes are pretty dirty, what with grease, cheese, and a layer of something else to contend with.

You should also consider how long your sponge will last. While you'll definitely need to replace your sponge on the regular to prevent bacteria build-up and odors, you also don't want a sponge that falls apart every other use — especially if you're doing some heavy scrubbing.

Then, ask yourself how dry your skin is. It may not seem like the most obvious consideration, but if you have sensitive skin or cracked hands, you probably don't want to be dunking your hands in soapy water for several minutes a time or handling a sponge bare-handed. To that end, you may consider a sponge that is attached to a stick, or a scrubber or some sort.

Also important is the absorbency and rinsability of a sponge. While you'll want your cleaning device to soak up suds and water, you also want to ensure that when you're done cleaning, you can actually clean your sponge. Nothing's worse than a sponge that just moves grease from your dishes to itself.

Finally, you may want to keep the eco-friendliness of a sponge in mind. After all, if you're going through several packs of sponges a year, you may be leaving behind a bigger eco-footprint than you realize. Luckily, there are some biodegradable options on the market for the environmentally conscious among us.

The best sponge overall

The Scrub Daddy is a favorite of kitchen experts everywhere, and with its quick drying time and hygienic qualities, it'll soon become a favorite of yours, too.

The Scrub Daddy is shaped like a smiling face, and at the risk of sounding cheesy, I daresay that it'll have you smiling, too. Perhaps the most unique and useful aspect of the sponge is its "Just Add Water" feature.

If you dunk the Scrub Daddy in cold water, it'll firm up and become ideal for tougher, more stuck-on messes. If you really want it to tackle sticky situations, you can dunk it in ice water or stick it in the refrigerator for a bit. On the other hand, if you submerge the Scrub Daddy in warm water, you'll find that you're left with a "soft and compressible scrubber," which can produce a nice lather or access difficult to reach corners of, say, a casserole dish.

And while the Scrub Daddy does wonders for cleaning pots, pans, and everything in between, it doesn't result in any scratches. I'm particularly persnickety about my All Clad accessories, and I found that even the most forceful use of the Scrub Daddy on these pans did not destroy their appearances. Plus, when I was done cleaning, the sponge dried out quickly so that I could use it again after my next meal.

Holding onto the Scrub Daddy is also quite easy, as folks over at Real Simple noted that you can "use the eyes and mouth as finger holes for a good grip."

The folks over at Your Best Digs have also noted that Scrub Daddy boasts "gentle but serious stain removal capacity and the widest variety of uses," and I certainly found the same to be true in my own use of the sponge.

Whether you're cleaning up stuck-on potatoes from a baking tray or looking to create a rich lather to coax away the oil from your frying pan, the Scrub Daddy is a good thing to have in your kitchen.

Over 2,600 buyers on Amazon have given the Scrub Daddy a decidedly positive rating — it has an average of 4.6 out of 5 stars. One satisfied buyer said that he would "definitely recommend [Scrub Daddy] to anyone," while another called the sponge his "go to scouring pad." Oh, and by the way, the Scrub Daddy is the most successful "Shark Tank" product to date.

Pros: Great scrubbing capabilities, quick drying time, easy to hold onto thanks to the face-shaped design

Cons: The Scrub Daddy isn't the longest lasting sponge, but they generally come in multi-packs

The best soap-free sponge

If you're trying to cut down on the use of chemicals in your kitchen, the Nano Sponge is the way to go.

The Nano Sponge claims to "lift dirt, grease, and grime like a magnet," and most impressive of all, does so without needing a whole lot of help from detergent. It's all thanks to the sponge's proprietary Nanolon fiber, which purports to clean just about any surface using just water.

When I put this claim to the test, I found it to be quite true. The Nano Sponge really did wipe down my kitchen counters and greasy pots without the need for soap, but to be perfectly honest, the thought of putting a dish away without having it touch detergent at all is still a little strange to me.

Regardless, the Nano Sponge lives up to its hype. There are two sides to the sponge: one is meant for scrubbing, while the other performs more of a liquid absorption and wiping function. The best part, however, is that the Nano Sponge does not trap odors like many other sponges do.

Even though the sponge is meant to clean a wide range of surfaces (yes, even beyond your kitchen), I found that even after multiple uses, this handy cleaning helper didn't begin to stink like many others do. In fact, Nano Sponge promises that its product will stay odor-free and fresh for 30 days, or you'll get your money back.

Indeed, customer service seems to be a major selling point for the Nano team. One Amazon buyer found that one of the sponges was not "sewn all the way around," and pointed out this defect to Nano. The company sent two additional sponges at no extra charge, which seems like the exact response you'd want to receive in this situation.

The Nano Sponge is also quite large. Oversized at 6 by 4 inches, they cover quite a large surface area, so you can clean your counters or your large pots or pans with ease.

Nearly 700 Amazon customers have given the Nano Sponge a 4.3 out of 5 stars. One buyer said, "Finally, I've found a well-made, heavy duty sponge that I can use everyday for any type of cleaning needed that does not stink." Another noted, "I am amazed at how they clean with only water, no soap or chemicals. The sponge is great for everything in the kitchen."

Pros: No smell, no chemicals needed, large surface area makes cleaning bigger messes a breeze

Cons: The softer, white side of the sponge begins looking a bit dirty quite quickly

The best no-scratch sponge

The O-Cedar sponge is recommended for Teflon coated cookware from Teflon expert DuPont, so you should have no qualms scrubbing your pots and pans with it.

You've definitely seen a variation of the O-Cedar sponge, what with its double-sided functionality and recognizable ripple design. And there's a reason that this sponge is so ubiquitous — it works. The patented scrubber sponge is actually endorsed by Teflon itself, so you know that it is decidedly safe to use on your non-stick pans.

Moreover, thanks to the rippled surface, you're better equipped to collect grease and grime and rinse it away than your traditional flat sponges. Perhaps more saliently, you won't have to work quite as hard to break up those stuck-on food particles.

While the O-Cedar is certainly tough enough to take on your stove or your oven, it's also gentle enough to take care of your delicate china. The other side of the sponge looks more like your standard cellulose sponge, though because of how thick it is, it'll last quite a bit longer than its competitors.

But perhaps the best thing about the O-Cedar is that after you're done cleaning your dishes and various surfaces, it's really easy to clean the sponge itself. As the folks from Your Best Digs pointed out, "The scrubber part doesn't trap food particles, even pesky egg and cheese residue don't stick to this sponge."

I certainly found this to be the case as well in my own testing of the O-Cedar. While plenty of other sponges manage to grab onto grease, they also tend to hold onto it. This isn't the case with this tool, which also means that it doesn't hang onto odors either.

O-Cedar sponges claim to be up to 20% hardier than their competitors, and as previously mentioned, purport to be odor resistant up to two months. While I haven't had my O-Cedar for quite so long, thus far, I'm not wrinkling my nose every time I do my dishes.

The O-Cedar is a perennial best seller on Amazon, where it boasts 4.6 out of 5 stars from nearly 1,300 customers. As one reviewer noted, "I've tried a lot of sponges over the years, with mixed results. But I find myself coming back to this one over and over." The reason? Durability.

Another buyer noted, "These are alarmingly good sponges," applauding O-Cedar's ability to last through several uses.

Pros: Teflon-endorsed no-scratch capability, supreme durability, great price point

Cons: Some customers have noted that the scrubbing side of the sponge is tough on hands

The best natural sponge

If you're looking to cut man-made materials out of your life where possible, the Natural Sea Sponge is a great place to start.

If you're looking to do right by the planet, you'll want to take a close look at the Natural Sea Sponge. As its name suggests, this sponge is, in fact, a real sea sponge harvested from the bottom of the ocean. Yes, it was an animal at one point. No, it's no longer alive. But because it is 100% natural and organic, it's very eco-friendly and completely biodegradable.

The Natural Sea Sponge is probably best suited for jobs that involve mopping up a lot of water or any other liquid. If you've spilled your bottle of wine or need to soak up all the leftover juice in a pot, this is the way to go. Because sponges themselves are adapted to encourage the maximal efficiency of water flow while they're alive, it comes as little surprise that when they die, they are just as absorbent.

While you may think that these sea sponges are best suited for your shower or washing your car or your windows, I've found that they certainly have their place in the kitchen, too. Sure, they're probably not going to be your go-to sponges for scrubbing away stubborn remnants of your dinner, but because they're so absorbent, they're excellent for working up a full lather to get your dishes to really sparkle.

Seeing as people have been using sea sponges for more than 2,000 years for a wide range of purposes, I'm sure that you'll be able to find a place in your home for the Natural Sea Sponge, too.

This particular brand collects is sponges from the Floridian coast, and don't worry — sea sponges are not endangered animals. When you buy a Natural Sea Sponge, you may be a bit intimidated by its large size. But fret not! You can simply turn that one large sponge into several smaller ones by taking a pair of scissors to it. Really, it's just more bang for your buck.

Happy buyers have pointed out that the Natural Sea Sponge will last you for years, and further noted that they don't retain odor like many other sponges might.

Pros: 100% eco-friendly and biodegradable, can be cut into multiple pieces for greater value, incredible absorbency

Cons: Because these guys are totally natural, they're not necessarily harsh enough to do serious cleaning on stuck-on food for your dishes

The best sanitary sponge

Made out of silicone, Kuhn Rikon's silicone sponges are non-porous, which means they don't stink, dry quickly, and are a whole lot less gross than traditional options.

Even if you constantly nuke your sponges in the microwave or throw them in the dishwasher for a quick spin, there's still something a little ... gross about them. And if you're a germaphobe, rather than using cellulose sponges, you'll probably want to take a look at the non-porous Kuhn Rikon silicone sponges instead.

They don't feel anything like the sponges that you're accustomed to, nor do they hold onto and disseminate germs like traditional options do. Rather, these silicone sponges are designed to be used for a long time. Silicone, after all, is much hardier than cellulose, and because it's not being constantly inundated with germs, you don't have to worry about the health risks associated with keeping them in your kitchen for several months on end.

If ever a sponge can make cleaning fun, the Kuhn Rikon can do it. The sponge takes some getting used to because it has supremely soft bristles, and is extremely flexible. Honestly, it may feel like you're holding a bowl of jelly. As Apartment Therapy puts it, "the sponge itself is wiggly like a sturdier-than-usual Jell-O mold." The reviewer actually ended up preferring it for cleaning countertops and other surfaces versus dishes.

And because of this wiggliness, you'll want to be careful when soaping the sponge up for its cleaning purposes. If you use too much soap, it'll be hard to hang onto the Kuhn Rikon. That said, I didn't have a ton of trouble getting a decent clean with this silicone sponge.

If you're accustomed to a traditional sponge (which I assume you are), this will take some getting used to, but once you've familiarized yourself enough with the feel and the abilities of the Kuhn Rikon, it's a much less smelly and germy way to take care of your dirty dishes.

These sponges are also great for a number of other purposes around the house, like scrubbing potatoes, picking up lint, or even cleaning your makeup brushes. And because you can just throw this sponge in the dishwasher to get it clean, you can technically use the same sponge for all these purposes (though you might as well just buy a few).

A "serial sponge hater" on Amazon has been converted by the Kuhn Rikon, while another happy customer noted that this silicone version "lasts much longer than a traditional sponge."

Pros: Super sanitary, silicone has a strange but oddly comfortable texture, practically odorless, long lasting

Cons: Some customers have noted issues with using the Kuhn Rikon in a traditional dishwashing setting, but have found other effective applications of the sponge

Major hospitality chains are buying up independent boutique hotels, and it's creating a new challenge that's at odds with the main reason people travel in the first place

hotel room

  • Independently run hotels are on the decline, Julie Weed wrote for the New York Times.
  • Boutique hotels are joining or becoming affiliates of large hotel chains to benefit from bigger marketing and operational budgets, Weed reported.
  • Marriott International, Accor and IHG are among the major hospitality chains purchasing collections of boutique hotels and assembling what are known as "soft brands," according to Weed.
  • Boutique hotels acquired by hotel chains now face a new challenge: how to meet travelers' desire for memorable stays while also fitting into the broader brand portfolio.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Boutique hotels are disappearing.

That, as Julie Weed reported for the New York Times, is because they're being snapped up by large hotel chains such as Accor, IGH and Marriott International. According to hotel data company STR, less than 40% of US hotels are independently owned and operated today. That's down from 60% of hotels three decades ago, Weed wrote.

One reason for this trend is that operating independently is often more expensive for hotels than operating as part of chain — especially when it comes to partnering with online booking agencies such as Expedia, according to Weed. "Hotels generally pay a 15 to 30 percent commission when a traveler uses the online booking agency to reserve a room," she wrote. "But larger companies like Marriott use their market power to negotiate lower booking rates."

What do modern travelers want?

For hotel chains, the draw of acquiring boutique hotels includes gaining access to a new set of customers.

Ting Phonsanam, cofounder of Momentum Hospitality Management, which helps independent hotels develop their brands, told Weed that hotel chains are expanding their collections of boutique hotels to cater to travelers looking for "unique, boutique or historic" accommodations.

Hotelier Ian Schrager, whose brands include EDITION and PUBLIC, affirmed this demand for one-of-a-kind hotel stays in conversation with Business Insider's Katie Warren earlier this year. Luxury in hospitality is "not about wearing a big brand on your sweater," he told Warren. "It's really about being involved in a unique experience and one that makes you feel really good about yourself and really comfortable."

Sense of place is also important to today's travelers.

In September, Warren spent three days in Lexington, Kentucky, at a thoroughbred sale. While there, she visited one of the only four-star hotels in the area, a palace on the side of the highway, and found that, while her stay was comfortable, it ultimately lacked a sense of place. "I was put off by the fact that the hotel didn't feel particularly tied to its Kentucky location," she wrote, adding: "I felt more like I was at Disneyland than at a luxury hotel in Kentucky."

Maintaining identity while becoming part of a larger network

The new challenge that boutique hotels acquired by larger brands face is how to continue delivering one-of-a-kind, memorable experiences. To do so, these hotels are employing a range of strategies.

Kimpton Hotels, a network of 65 boutique hotels acquired by IHG in 2014, asks guests who qualify for their Inner Circle benefit to provide food and newspaper preferences before arrival. Hotel staff use these details to deliver customized welcome packages, Lina Batarags previously reported for Business Insider.

HotelTonight, an online service that allows travelers to book hotels at the last minute at discounted rates, also pays attention to details. Founder Sam Shank told Batarags that "the best boutique hotels are appealing to people's nostalgia." Shank explained further: "Things like cookies and milk offered before bed, the pillow fight kit one hotel sells, games in the lobby. Hotels need to have things that are memorable and different."

Incorporating local, regional goods into hotel stores is another trend employed by boutique brands, Samantha Shankman recently reported for Skift.

"In the lean toward local, luxury and lifestyle hotels are adding small retail spaces that serve as a tasting menu of regional designers and products," she wrote. "The strategy allows guests to sample the local zeitgeist and take a piece of it home with them."

Similarly, SLS Beverly Hills general manager Christophe Thomas recently told Business Insider's Taylor Borden that incorporating local produce into its restaurant helps tie the global hotel brand to the region.

These initiatives appear to be paying off, hotel real-estate investor Stephan Chan told Weed. Chan, who helps organize the Independent Lodging Congress, has gathered from attendees that the distinctions between hotel chains and independent hotels are blurring. To travelers, chain-affiliated boutique hotels now appear "boutique enough," he said.

The best shaving soap

Best Shaving Soap

  • A lousy soap makes for a lousy shave, so choosing the right one is just as important as selecting a quality razor.
  • Mitchell's Wool Fat is considered by many to be the gold standard of shaving soaps, and it's the best shaving soap that money can buy.

Most men today probably treat their daily shaving routine as something of a chore. It's very likely that you also use or have used a multi-blade cartridge razor and canned shaving foam to get the job done when what you should be using is a good shaving soap, bristle brush, and safety razor.

Quality soap is a vital part of your shave because it lubricates your face and whiskers so that your razor blade can move cleanly across your face for a close shave with minimal irritation. A good soap will also lock in your skin's moisture instead of drying it out and leaving your face with that unpleasant "tight" feeling.

What makes a shaving soap different from normal bar soap is its composition, which consists of added fat  — either from animals or plant sources such as coconut oil — and/or glycerin. These ingredients are used to give the soap a smooth, slick consistency so it works better as a lubricant while keeping your skin hydrated. A number of all-natural shaving soaps are also made today for people who want to avoid certain synthetic additives like parabens.

Since every man's skin and facial hair is a bit different, it can take some time to dial in your wet shaving kit, but it's worth the effort if you want to achieve that perfect shave every time. Your personal soap selection largely comes down to preference, so your best bet is to stick to established soapmakers and try a few to find the one that's right for you.

To help you choose, we've smoked out the five best shaving soaps, including our favorite pick along with a hard puck soap, a soft cream, a soap for shavers with sensitive skin, and a handy soap stick for when you're on the road.

Here are the best shaving soaps:

Updated on 10/28/2019 by Amir Ismael: Updated links, prices, and formatting.

The best shaving soap overall

Mitchell's Wool Fat lathers, lubricates, and shaves exceptionally well while being gentle on the skin, making it the gold standard for wet shavers new and old.

A select few shaving soaps can be considered "gold standard" options that every man should try, and one such example is Mitchell's Wool Fat, which has remained a wet shaving staple for nearly a century. It has set the bar for what a good shave soap should be.

True to its name, Mitchell's Wool Fat shaving soap is made from the fatty substance secreted by woolly animals. In this case, it's domestic sheep, but rest assured that no animals are actually killed to collect this fat. Wool fat contains large amounts of lanolin, a waxy material that works especially well as a skin lubricant and moisturizer, so it's easy to see why it is ideal for use in shaving soap.

Mitchell's started making its wool fat soap in England in the 1930s and has been exporting it all over the world since then. Although its regular wool fat soaps have remained in high demand, its shaving soap, in particular, has achieved near-legendary status among wet shavers owing to its great lubricating and lathering properties.

Its all-natural ingredients are gentle on the face, and the wool fat is also very good for soothing and preventing irritation on sensitive skin.

If there's one drawback to Mitchell's Wool Fat Soap, it's that it can be stubborn to lather until you develop a good routine. A stiffer brush with boar or horse bristles will help, and some guys choose to soak the soap in a little bit of hot water for a few minutes — a process known as "blooming" — to soften it up a bit and make it easier to load your brush.

Once you've got the hang of this, Mitchell's Wool Fat will likely prove itself to be the last shaving soap you'll ever need. It's available with a nice lidded ceramic bowl, and you can also buy standalone pucks to refill the bowl or to use with a favorite bowl or mug you already have. It's slightly expensive, but since it's a fairly hard puck, it'll last you quite a while.

Pros: Lubricates and shaves extremely well due to its lanolin content, all-natural ingredients with no parabens, made in England, and is available with a nice lidded ceramic bowl

Cons: Can be tricky to lather, and the scent is very mild

The best hard puck shaving soap

Made in England and triple-milled for extra hardness, D.R. Harris is a historic shaving soap that is the easy choice for any wet shaver who favors the dense lather and long life that solid pucks provide.

All of the brands featured among our favorite shaving soaps have been around for decades (or longer), but D.R. Harris might boast the most impressive pedigree of all. This family-owned company was founded in England in 1790, has held various royal warrants since 1938, and continues to produce high-quality soaps that are a favorite of wet shavers all over the globe, especially among those who favor hard pucks.

As is appropriate for such a historic brand, D.R. Harris soap is made using old-school triple-milling. This process is the gold standard for solid soaps and results in a dense, hard bar that lasts a long time and creates a rich lather when worked properly. This extra processing makes triple-milled pucks a bit more expensive than other shave and body soaps, but they also last considerably longer — possibly for years depending on how often you shave and what lathering method you use.

Due to its hardness, a soft floppy badger bristle brush may prove insufficient to easily produce a lather (higher-quality badger bristle should get the job done, however). A brush with stiffer bristles, such as boar or horsehair, might deliver better results with this soap. It comes in an attractive wooden shave bowl, and, like Mitchell's soap, you can also order it by the puck when it runs out or if you already have a bowl or mug you like to use.

D.R. Harris shaving soap is tallow-based, made from animal fats for great lubrication and moisturizing properties. The thick, slick consistency of this tallow-based soap allows it to protect your face as you draw a razor across it, and it requires minimal water to work it up into a luxurious creamy lather in your bowl or mug. Even guys with hard water, something that can cause lathering problems with some soaps, have an easy time with this one.

Pros: Triple-milled for extra hardness and longevity, whips up a highly dense lather with little water, tallow-based for good lubrication, lasts a long time, made in England, and is available with an attractive wooden shave bowl

Cons: The hard triple-milled puck will lather best with a stiffer brush

The best soft shaving soap

Another of the oldest and most iconic brands in existence, Taylor of Old Bond Street shaving soap shaves beautifully, smells great, and has a soft, creamy consistency that quickly works into a luxurious lather.

Taylor of Old Bond Street is one of those household names you will see a lot on your wet shaving journey. Its old-school formula, which was first created in the mid-19th century, has been the favorite of men for generations.

This pedigree is well-deserved and Taylor of Old Bond Street shaving soap remains an English classic for a reason: It's soft creamy consistency easily whips up a rich (not airy or bubbly) lather, it lubricates incredibly well, and hydrates your face for a smooth post-shave feel that doesn't leave your skin tight and dried out.

The soft cream is incredibly easy to work with but won't last quite as long as a hard soap. Still, the generous 5.3-ounce container should still carry you for around five to six months. The plastic bowl has a nice classic aesthetic and the airtight lid actually screws down to ensure that the cream won't dry out between uses. Note that you only need a little bit of this stuff, so don't lather in the bowl. Scoop a dollop out with your brush and work it up inside another bowl or mug.

You've got 15 fragrances to choose from, from peppermint to sandalwood, as well as an all-natural formula that's free of parabens and preservatives and is purpose-made for sensitive skin. Sandalwood is by far the most popular among wet shaves as it's a classic, masculine aroma that simply smells fantastic, and it's one that your great-grandfather likely used.

Pros: Made in England, the soft cream is incredibly easy to lather, lubricates and hydrates your skin beautifully, smells great, 15 formulas to choose from, and comes with a nice-looking lidded bowl

Cons: The soft cream won't last as long as a hard soap

The best shaving soap for sensitive skin

The Italian-made Proraso shaving soaps can offer some much-needed relief from bumps, razor burn, and general post-shave irritation.

Wet shaving isn't without its drawbacks. Chief among these is that the act of dragging a sharp razor across your skin can result in redness, bumps, inflammation, or a generally unpleasant sensation generally referred to as "razor burn." This is often due to a shoddy razor, but it can also be caused by a bad soap. If you have suffered from this, then you know the relief that a good soothing soap can provide. Our recommended solution to this is Proraso's excellent menthol and eucalyptus shaving soap.

The Proraso menthol and eucalyptus formula was actually our top pick for the best shaving soap for your shaving kit. It made the cut there due to its low cost, ease of use, great feel on your face due to the added menthol, and the fact that it's great for guys with sensitive skin.

I mentioned in that review that this is the soap I've used for years because I love the cooling effect of the menthol and my fair skin is on the sensitive side. I also shared a handy tip for maximizing the soap's potential: Grab a tube of the matching Proraso cream and pop a dollop of it on top of the soap before you start lathering. You'll get a super-slick bubble-free lather that lubricates your face extremely well.

I personally find the menthol and eucalyptus soap to be perfect for my skin. It doesn't hurt that it smells great, too, and I love anything minty. Proraso also offers another formula made for shavers who have particularly fussy faces. This one is made with green tea and oatmeal to reduce inflammation. I've never felt the need to use it myself, but if your skin is especially prone to post-shave irritation, it works a treat.

I recommend you try the menthol first, however, as the cooling effect on your skin is really something else. You'll feel it immediately after your razor makes a pass and the air hits the freshly-shaved skin. Afterward, instead of an alcohol-based aftershave, finish up with some Proraso aftershave balm. It's the perfect complement to your Proraso soap, and it'll cool and soothe your face without drying it out and giving you the burning sensation that alcohol-based aftershaves do.

Pros: The menthol immediately cools and soothes skin during and after shaving, the green tea and oatmeal formula provides extra relief for especially sensitive shavers, comes with a lathering bowl, it's made in Italy, and it smells great

Cons: The semi-soft soap won't last as long as a hard puck, and it lathers best when used with the matching Proraso cream

The best travel shaving soap

Great lathering capabilities, a compact shape, and unbeatable value make the Arko stick the perfect shaving soap to toss in your bag when you're on the road.

Whether you're traveling by plane, train, or automobile, your grooming routine shouldn't have to suffer. You'll probably want to leave behind your usual shaving tools, however, as a bowl or mug, full-sized shaving soap, and other tools can quickly eat up space in your Dopp kit or weekender bag. It's important to travel light when you're on the move, and Arko's famous soap stick is just the ticket for taking your wet shaving ritual with you on the road.

The first thing you'll probably notice about the Arko soap stick— aside from its unusual shape — is its distinctive retro-style packaging that harks back to mid-century America. In fact, this labeling has remained unchanged since the soap hit the market in 1957. It may not look as nice on your shelf as a nice wooden or ceramic shave bowl, but Arko's old-school packaging is one of the things that has made this soap an iconic standby in the wet shaving community.

But what's really great about this Turkish tallow-based classic is how well it performs relative to its low cost. It's arguably the best value to be had in a traditional shaving soap and punches well above its weight when it comes to lubrication and lathering capabilities. How you lather it is up to you, although Arko's unique shape obviously makes this process a bit different than your standard bowl or mug soap.

Many shavers simply apply it directly to their wet faces, rubbing it onto the skin in circular motions and then following up with a shave brush to generate the lather. Others do this in the palm of their hand. You can also cut off a piece and lather it inside a separate container. Some shavers even take it completely out of the foil and pack it into their favorite bowl or mug for use at home.

The Arko soap stick is a perfect size for tossing into your Dopp kit when you hit the road and don't have room to pack your regular shaving kit. Many opt to use it at home as their go-to soap, too, owing to its low cost and great quality. Not only is the Arko stick a great travel soap, but it's alsoone of the best shaving soaps in its own right.

Pros: An excellent value, can be lathered in a variety of ways, soaps up well, and its handy stick shape is perfect for travel (and it's just as great when used at home)

Cons: It's unscented and the smell is nothing to write home about

best aftershaves

  • Don't let your aftershave be an afterthought. Lucky Tiger's post-shave tonic is our top pick because it soothes your face, tones your skin, and prevents irritation. Its gentle alcohol-free formula works beautifully for all skin types so you don't feel the burn.

Your choice of aftershave is one of the most important parts of building your wet shaving kit, but it's also easily the most subjective. Quality is very cut and dry when it comes to safety razors and shaving brushes, and while there is certainly a standard when it comes to grading a particular aftershave, what you put on your face after a shave largely boils down to preference and skin type.

The basic purpose of your aftershave is three-fold: To soothe your skin and ward off irritation after dragging a sharp razor across your face, to kill bacteria and prevent infections if you nicked yourself while shaving, and to make you smell nice — all without leaving your skin dry or oily. The choice of fragrance is, admittedly, the least important consideration, although it's perhaps the most enjoyable. A good aftershave should also help to prevent the dreaded post-shave breakout by closing up your exfoliated pores.

Aftershaves generally come in either liquid or cream form. Creams, or balms, are designed to moisturize your skin and prevent or relieve irritation, so they're ideal for men with sensitive and/or dry complexions. Liquid aftershave tonics are typically made to tone skin and close up pores and are a good choice for guys with naturally oily skin. Of course, any good aftershave, whether a balm or tonic, will do all of this to some degree, but which kind you want comes down to your preferences and how your skin behaves.

As with shaving soaps, it's a great idea to try a few post-shave tonics and balms to see what you like and what feels best on your face. We've picked out five of the best ones to suit a variety of preferences and skin types. Our recommendations offer something for everyone, from post-shave balms that soothe sensitive skin to old-school barbershop aftershaves that'll have you smelling just like grandpa did when he was wooing grandma.

The best aftershave overall

Lucky Tiger's aftershave uses natural anti-inflammatory agents to make a gentle formula that's free of alcohol and parabens, smells of citrus, and calms your skin.

If you want to shoot straight for "the best," then a good alcohol-free post-shave tonic hits the sweet spot between traditional aftershaves and balms. An alcohol-free tonic will prevent irritation and razor burn, making it suitable for those with sensitive skin, while the liquid formula is more ideal than creamy balms for guys with naturally oily complexions.

Lucky Tiger was our top pick for the best aftershave in our shaving kit guide, owing to its great soothing properties and fresh but not overbearing citrus fragrance. The gentle formula contains witch hazel and aloe vera for natural, skin-friendly relief from irritation and inflammation, putting it above traditional alcohol-based tonics which often have a tendency to burn and dry you out.

Other natural ingredients that Lucky Tiger uses to cool and calm down skin include chamomile, calendula, and borage oil, which all work together to relieve inflammation and lock in moisture without leaving your face feeling greasy. The formula is not 100% natural, but the natural ingredients it does contain are very effective and the aftershave is completely free of alcohol and parabens.

As a brand, Lucky Tiger is well-established, having been around since the 1920s. It was among the first alcohol-free liquid formulas available, setting it apart from other alcohol-based barbershop staples like Pinaud Clubman. The mild citrus fragrance is refreshing and pleasant, but don't expect it to stick around for a while.

The Lucky Tiger aftershave comes in a generous 8-ounce bottle which, while plastic instead of glass, boasts a cool vintage aesthetic that hasn't changed much since the formula hit the shelves in 1935.

At $13, this tonic is a great value, too, and should last you a long while. Whether you're looking for "the one" or just want to pick a good first tonic to try before sampling some other, Lucky Tiger is easily the best aftershave to start with.

Pros: Comes in a generous 8-ounce bottle, contains witch hazel and aloe for excellent relief from inflammation and irritation, a gentle formula that's free of alcohol and parabens, works well with virtually all skin types, and has a pleasant fresh citrus scent that isn't overbearing

Cons: The scent is mild and doesn't last very long

The best aftershave balm for sensitive skin

Say goodbye to redness and irritation with Nivea Men's post-shave balm, which soothes, refreshes, and moisturizes your skin to leave a pleasant, tingly, cooling sensation.

Unless you're rocking a full beard, shaving is a necessity that most men have to deal with. It's not a problem for a lot of guys, but plenty of others quickly discover once they start shaving that their skin is sensitive and prone to redness, bumps, and general irritation that can sully what should be an enjoyable manly ritual. This is particularly common for guys with fair complexions.

And while wet shaving with a good safety or straight razor is itself a great step towards getting a smoother, more precise shave with less irritation, you're still using a sharp blade on your skin which will at some point cause some problems. Shavers who struggle with this should consider ditching liquid aftershaves (especially alcohol-based formulas) and opt instead for a good creamy cooling balm like this excellent example from Nivea Men.

The Nivea Men balm has been our favorite aftershave for sensitive skin for a while, and it remains popular among the many men who have suffered from frequent razor burn. The aftershave cream is completely alcohol-free and contains natural ingredients like chamomile, seaweed extracts, and vitamin E that help to soothe and moisturize skin.

Nivea Men offers its balm in two formulas, and this particular one features additional agents that deliver a very pleasant and tingly cooling sensation. It feels great and offers a bit of extra protection against the inflammation that often accompanies your shaving routine, although it is noticeably milder than menthol-based aftershaves like those from Proraso, which may or may not be a good thing depending on what you like. It's a good value, too, at $16 for a three-pack of 3.5-ounce bottles.

Pros: Gentle alcohol-free formula that soothes and moisturizes, doesn't make your face dry or oily, and provides a pleasant and refreshing cooling sensation on the skin

Cons: The creamy formula is less ideal for guys with naturally oily skin, and the cooling sensation is somewhat mild compared to menthol-based balms like Proraso's

The best natural aftershave

If you want to go au naturale, then you can't beat the soothing and antiseptic properties of witch hazel, the main ingredient in Thayers renowned face toner.

If you're at all familiar with skin care, then you're likely no stranger to witch hazel. This North American herbal extract has been a staple of organic cosmetic products for centuries, prized for its natural ability to treat skin inflammation while featuring additional anti-bacterial properties, and it still remains a hugely popular natural alternative to synthetic topical solutions and antiseptics.

Although witch hazel is cheap and undeniably effective, it doesn't smell particularly nice. The Thayers face tonic is a great alternative to plain witch hazel, as it contains some additional ingredients that give it a pleasant fragrance while making it even more suited for use as an aftershave. Thayers is a historic 19th-century American brand that offers a number of all-natural facial tonics and skin toners, but with the additions of natural ingredients like aloe vera and vitamin E that work in conjunction with the witch hazel to refresh and soothe inflamed skin.

We named Thayersour favorite natural face toner before, and although it's not explicitly advertised as an "aftershave," many men have nonetheless added this great formula to their wet shaving shelf. This is due to its all-natural ingredients and its undeniable effectiveness. After all, the purpose of a face toner is to clean the skin, close up pores, and soothe irritation, which is exactly what an aftershave should do, and Thayers checks all the boxes.

Thayers offers its face toner in four different formulas. Our favorite of these contains additional rose water, which provides a nice fragrance while offering some additional skin-soothing effects along with the witch hazel. Thayers is completely free of alcohol, humectants, and parabens as well, and at $9 for a big 12-ounce bottle, it's arguably the best value of all of our top picks.

Pros: All-natural ingredients (with no alcohol, humectants, or parabens), witch hazel and aloe vera provide excellent anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties, the rose water offers a pleasant fragrance, and it's an incredible value for a large 12-ounce bottle

Cons: Lacks the traditional masculine fragrances generally found in other aftershaves

The best old-school, barbershop-style aftershave

A classic and unrivaled barbershop-style fragrance makes Pinaud Clubman aftershave as unique as it is timeless.

One axiom you'll hear a lot regarding aftershaves is to avoid ones that are alcohol-based. I mostly agree — with one caveat. I admit, against all advice, I remain an avid fan of old-school aftershaves, alcohol be damned. My all-time favorite is Pinaud Clubman, and the reasons are simple: I love the classic barbershop fragrance and, when used in conjunction with a shave balm — that's the caveat — it doesn't burn too badly or dry out my face.

First, some history: Why, exactly, are many aftershaves made with alcohol despite the modern conventional wisdom that cautions against it? The answer is found in the barbershops of old. Aftershaves originally contained alcohol as a sterilizing agent, as these were used by barbers as post-shave antiseptics to clean the faces of patrons and prevent infections. It's no surprise then that old-school aftershaves contain alcohol, although non-alcoholic formulas have become increasingly popular.

The alcohol in these tonics is what's responsible for the popular notion that aftershave hurts (cue the famous scene from Home Alone). This isn't without some truth, as putting alcohol on your skin after dragging a razor across it can indeed burn a bit. Plus, alcohol can dry out your skin and does little to ward off irritation.

Here's what I do to solve this: After shaving, I apply Proraso's menthol post-shave balm. Then I clean up my shaving gear and put everything away, giving the balm a few minutes to soothe and cool my face. After I'm finished, the last thing I do is apply a splash of Clubman. The Proraso balm soothes my face, prevents the Clubman from burning too much, and keeps the alcohol from drying out my skin, while the Clubman keeps the creamy balm from leaving my skin too oily (and it smells fantastic, of course).

Clubman offers many fragrances, including some new ones that I've yet to try. I have used four of these, however: The original formula, a masculine barbershop aroma with background floral and citrus notes; Special Reserve, a warm, musky scent that's perfect for fall and winter; Musk, which strikes a balance between the original and Special Reserve; and Bay Rum, which, to my nose, smells like clove.

Pros: Available in a number of great-smelling masculine fragrances, timeless barbershop aroma (for the popular classic formula), great value for a large six-ounce bottle, tones and cleans the face, and can do double duty as a cologne

Cons: The formula contains alcohol and works best in conjunction with a soothing post-shave balm to avoid dryness and burning

The best aftershave to pair with soap

The Italian-made Proraso post-shave tonics and balms do everything you want your aftershave to do.

I'm a huge fan of Proraso soaps, and we've recommended them in our roundups before. Yet this historic Italian brand does more than whip up an excellent lather: Proraso also offers a great lineup of post-shave tonics and balms that pair beautifully with its shaving creams and soaps.

Proraso offers a few different hard and soft soaps, but its two most popular are by far the menthol and sandalwood formulas. I mentioned in our shaving soap guide that I've been using these as my workhorse soaps for years, putting a dollop of menthol cream on top of my Proraso soap for a super-rich, creamy lather. And, as I stated in the Clubman review, I follow up with a dab of Proraso menthol shave balm before applying a splash of aftershave.

I have sensitive skin, which is one of the main reasons I love Proraso products — especially the menthol and eucalyptus formulas, which cool my skin and feel amazing both during and after wet shaving. The menthol balm is great for this, but Proraso also offers liquid aftershaves that are equally as satisfying. These paraben-free formulas are made with witch hazel to relieve and prevent irritation and redness the natural way, while shea butter keeps your skin from drying out.

These splashes are available in both menthol and sandalwood fragrances, so you can pick whichever one matches your soaps. For my money, I'm sticking with the menthol, as the cooling sensation feels wonderful and wards off irritation on my sensitive complexion. It's also noticeably more "punchy" than the Nivea Men cooling balm. The liquid tonics do contain alcohol (although users report that there is hardly any "burn" at all), but if you've got to go alcohol-free, the menthol balm is a great alternative.

Pros: Made in Italy, both formulas smell great, soothes and refreshes your skin, prevents razor burn extremely well (despite the alcohol content), paraben-free, comes in a nice glass bottle, and you can choose between balms or liquid tonics

Cons: The balm is unavailable in sandalwood, and it's more expensive than our other picks

The best toothbrushes

$

  • There's plenty to be said for the classic manual toothbrush: It can't run out of batteries, and it's compact, lightweight, and portable.
  • The Oral-B Pro-Health All-in-One Soft Bristle Toothbrush is our top pick because its myriad bristle types and built-in tongue, cheek, and gum cleaners leave your whole mouth clean and fresh.

Ubiquitous though they may be, the humble modern toothbrush is nothing to be taken for granted. Up until the middle of the 20th century, many toothbrushes were still being made with hog bristles. Today, many toothbrushes pack more technology into a slender cylinder than was present in a midcentury automobile or aircraft.

But even in the days of the high-tech electric toothbrush, there is yet room at the table for the classic manual toothbrush, too. Some people simply prefer the feel and the function of a manual toothbrush, swearing by its oral cleaning abilities. Other people might have teeth or gums too sensitive for a motorized, electric brush. The traveler might choose a manual toothbrush because it can't run out of power. And then there's always the need to have a few spare toothbrushes on hand for those impromptu sleepovers or for the house guest who forgets to pack a toothbrush.

There's also the fact that manual toothbrushes cost a fraction of the price of electric toothbrushes and are usually cheaper even than just the replacement heads electric options require.

We chose a variety of manual toothbrushes, from the low-cost disposable brush to keep on hand for guests to the Cadillac-level manual toothbrush that the classic oral hygiene aficionado. Read on in the slides below for our top picks.

Here are the best manual toothbrushes you can buy:

Updated by Lisa Sabatini on 10/28/2019: Updated links, prices, and text.

The best toothbrush overall

Thanks to the multiple types of bristles and other cleaning surfaces of the Oral-B Pro-Health All-in-One Soft Bristle Toothbrush, every stroke of this brush is maximally productive.

Truth be told, I made the switch to an electric toothbrush about four years ago. When I travel, though, it's an Oral-B Pro-Health Toothbrush that comes along with me. This toothbrush has a broad, long head that allows for excellent coverage over the tops and sides of your teeth, so you're not going to miss any surface area as long as you hit all the right angles while using it. However, it's not the size but rather what the toothbrush does for those surfaces of your mouth that sets it apart.

The Oral-B Pro-Health All-in-One Soft Bristle Toothbrush features bristles positioned at different angles, so as you alternately push and pull the brush, you will fit different areas of each tooth. Alongside the bristles are soft rubber gum stimulators that can help massage the connective tissue of your gums, stimulating blood flow to rejuvenate the gums. On the side of the brush head are raised bumps that can serve as cheek and tongue cleaners, loosening plaque built up on these soft parts of the mouth.

The overall benefits of this carefully designed toothbrush include the removal of plaque and freshened breath in the short term, and reduced stain visibility and protection against gum disease over time. Yes, this is the most expensive option on our list, but it still costs a lot less than a battery-powered toothbrush, and it works like a charm.

Pros: Varied bristle pattern, cheek and tongue cleaner, indicator bristles change color when replacement needed

Cons: Pricey for a manual toothbrush

The best disposable toothbrush

With a SmileMakers Pre-Pasted Disposable Toothbrush, all you need is water to have a great tooth-cleaning session because the toothpaste is preloaded onto these single-use brushes.

Is a disposable toothbrush going to clean your teeth as well as one designed to be used for months at a time? Not so much. But is it about a hundred times better than not cleaning your teeth at all? Absolutely.

You probably won't use these toothbrushes regularly, but rather will keep them at the ready for unexpected occasions. After you get a 144-pack of SmileMakers Pre-Pasted Disposable Toothbrushes, you can keep a dozen or so tucked into the linen closet and ready for house guests. You can also tuck a few into your glove box and stick a couple more in your briefcase. Leave some at work, and stash a few more in an emergency kit. You'll still be left with plenty of pre-pasted toothbrushes at the ready, and toothbrushes that actually have rather soft bristles and sturdy, textured handles that work together to make the brushing experience much better than you'd expect.

With more than 230 reviews posted on Amazon, the SmileMakers Pre-Pasted Disposable Toothbrushes is listed as Amazon's Choice for "prepasted toothbrushes individually wrapped." I must note, though, that many customers who were satisfied with the construction of the toothbrushes still complained about the diminutive amount of toothpaste that came on each brush. You can always just add more, of course.

Pros: Excellent convenience, affordable price, individually wrapped units

Cons: Not enough paste on the brushes

The best low-cost toothbrush

When ordered in a 12-pack, the Colgate Premier Extra Clean Toothbrush is a real bargain.

A Colgate Premier Extra Clean Toothbrush has a long, broad head with bristles of varying length and angles so that the overall shape of the toothbrush provides maximum coverage. On the backside of the brush head is a textured surface you can use as a tongue and cheek scraper to remove plaque adhering to these soft surfaces of the mouth. The firm plastic handles have a slight curve near the brush head that makes applying pressure and proper positioning easy, and the handles are textured for grip down below.

And that's about all there is to say about the design of these toothbrushes, which are well-made but not marvels of modern oral hygiene technology. They are, however, really inexpensive. While these toothbrushes are about 12 times less expensive than the priciest model on our list, they are certainly not 12 times less effective. The low price makes the Colgate Premier Extra Clean Toothbrush a great choice for a large family, as does the fact that they come in four different colors, which helps everyone keep their toothbrush separated.

Pros: Great low price tag, handles come in different colors, tongue scraper on back of head

Cons: Bristles too hard, handles a bit small

The best toothbrush for toddlers

The unique tri-sided design of the Fridababy SmileFrida Toddler Toothbrush allows a caregiver to clean all sides of a young child's teeth with a single pass of the brush.

The Fridababy SmileFrida Toddler Toothbrush has four things going for it that make it a great choice for brushing a little kid's teeth. First and foremost, that tri-sided design helps brush the top and both sides of a child's teeth at the same time, meaning more coverage in less time, which any parent with a fussy child will tell you is a real positive.

Second, the soft but sturdy bristles of this toddler toothbrush are designed to bend but not to break off when bitten down on, so you don't have to worry about your kid ingesting or choking on loose bits of bristle. Third, the handle is made of a soft material that won't hurt little teeth or gums. And finally, the toothbrush is sized perfectly for a small mouth. Try using an adult-size toothbrush in a kid's mouth even once and you'll see how important that is.

A review from EntirelyBaby called the Fridababy SmileFrida Toddler Toothbrush a great way to "cut down on the time [parents] have to spend" on the often fraught task of brushing a young kid's teeth," adding that the safety factor of "bristles [that] will bend, not break" was quite welcome.

Pros: Multisided brush design, bristles won't break off, soft and ergonomic handle

Cons: Hard to brush up and down or in circular pattern

37% of millennials think they're doing worse than their peers, but even more think they're coming out on top

millennial

It's never fun to play the comparison game — especially when you're a millennial strapped for cash.

A new survey by Insider and Morning Consult polled 2,096 Americans about their financial health, debt, and earnings for a new series, "The State of Our Money." More than 670 respondents were millennials, defined as ages 23 to 38 in 2019.

The survey asked all respondents how they think their finances compare to others their age — and 37% of millennials think they're doing worse than their peers. Of these respondents, 10% think they're much worse off, while 27% think they're somewhat worse off.

That might be because many millennials are suffering from stagnant wages, facing living costs outpacing income growth, struggling to afford staples like housing, and dealing with staggering student-loan debt. This combination can leave millennials with paltry savings and other forms of debt like credit-card debt.

If they identify with any of these financial woes but know of peers who aren't, it makes sense they would feel financially worse off.

Even more millennials feel good about their money compared to their peers

But while things may be rough for the generation, perhaps the fundamentals aren't as bad as the story they're told in the press. More millennials are positive when it comes to the peer comparison — 46% think they're much better or somewhat better off than their peers (the remaining 17% said they didn't know). If millennials are overall thinking they're doing better than their peers, the situation on the ground may be better than we believe.

It's also worth noting that the Great Recession split the millennial generation down the middle— the older cohort bore the brunt of the financial crisis and entered a tough job market, which made it more difficult to save. Younger millennials experienced the recovery period and entered a better job market.

If millennial respondents interpreted the term "age" more broadly in the question, they could be comparing themselves to those in their generation a few years older or younger than them, which may influence perceived differences.

But these results are on par with what overall respondents in the survey said — 38% think they're much or somewhat worse off than their peers, while 43% think they're somewhat or much better off.

Millennials are just as likely to compare themselves to the Joneses as anyone else.

A 30-year-old left her accounting career to launch a nationwide shoe repair service — and is now seeing a 30% revenue increase every month

shoe repair 2

  • Meghan Flynn worked full-time at a Twin Cities-based accounting firm when she had the idea to digitize shoe repair. After linking up with fellow Minnesota based cobbler Julio Sanchez, Shooli was born.
  • They began by targeting high-rise buildings in Minneapolis, with a secondary focus on affluent suburbs. But the suburbs created their biggest demand.
  • In June 2019, they launched a national mail-in order service. Shooli customers leave shoes needing repairs in blue boxes for pick-up in Minnesota, or receive boxes with prepaid shipping labels. 40% of mail-in orders come from the East Coast.
  • Flynn's advice for aspiring small business owners is to give your idea your all and be willing to make it work at all costs. She credits her dedication — citing cold nights of trudging through the snow to market her services — to her success.
  • Click here for more BI Prime stories.

When people think of industry-disrupting startups, it's often a certain Bay Area of California that comes to mind, not the snow-covered landscape of the American Midwest.

shoe repair 1

Yet the latter is exactly where shoe repair service business Shooli launched just last year. With a team of two fueling it, Shooli has grown from running on a paired-down app that was originally designed for a laundry service to a company sustaining a consistent 30% growth in revenue month after month since May of this year that recently launched a nation-wide mail-in service, extending its reach across the country.

Offering "shine, care, and repair" services, Minneapolis-based customers can schedule a pick-up, leaving their shoes in a blue Shooli box to be scooped up and brought to the company's Northeast Minneapolis warehouse for a fixing up. Those outside of the Twin Cities can request a box that comes complete with a prepaid label and shuttle their shoes through the mail instead.

shoe repair 7

Once at the warehouse, shoes are repaired by long-time cobbler Julio Sanchez with the help of Meghan Flynn, Shooli's head honcho who has learned to do minor repairs herself. Considering that the number of cobblers across the US has dwindled from roughly 100,000 in the 1930's to somewhere around 5,000 today, Shooli is a modern take on an age-old tradition.

Here's how this tech-centric shoe repair company took hold in the Midwest.

An old idea turned new

Prior to transitioning to Shooli full time in July of 2018 to concentrate on the company before its October 2018 launch, Flynn was in accounting at Hemisphere Companies, a Twin Cities-based investment firm. It was here that the idea for Shooli was brought up among coworkers.

shoe repair cover

"One of the guys at our group came into the office one day and was like, 'Meghan, do you know where to get shoes shined? Where do you get shoes cleaned?' and I was like, 'I'm a girl. Do girls even get their shoes shined?'" she recalled to Business Insider.

But the idea stuck with her. Outside of the airport, there are no convenient shoe care options — and even at the airport, most travelers are too busy connecting between flights to sit down for a shoeshine anyway.

"We have everything available on an app, how can we not get shoe care available? That's honestly where it originally came from," Flynn said. She turned the idea over in her head, talking to coworkers and hypothesizing about the potential market for such a service. "It was like, can we make Minnesota work? Because that's where we are. What will it take?" she explained.

shoe repair 3

Flynn pieced together what it would take to turn the idea that would become Shooli into reality — mapping out the startup costs and timeline and crafting a game plan for finding experienced cobblers to work with — and pitched it to her company, which gave Shooli the initial funding it needed to get started. With that, Flynn was no longer an accountant, but the chief operating officer of a fledgling startup and an apprentice cobbler.

Flynn hit the ground running approaching local cobblers, and turning up nothing except being occasionally blacklisted as competition, she found her way to Sanchez's shop in St. Bonifacius, MN, 30 miles to the west of Minneapolis. A lifelong cobbler who also had dreams of digitizing shoe repair, Sanchez quickly joined Flynn in her venture. Soon after, the duo moved to the Northeast Minneapolis warehouse that Shooli calls home today.

Scaling the business in multiple unexpected markets

Shooli's first target markets were high-rise buildings in Minneapolis' downtown and North Loop neighborhoods with the assumption that high-volume locales would constitute the bulk of their business, with a secondary market focus on St. Louis Park and Edina, two relatively affluent Minneapolis suburbs.

"It did not happen like that, however, as life goes," Flynn recalled. She discovered that Shooli's highest demand was coming from its secondary markets, particularly Edina, which still makes up a consistent amount of the service's business today.

It soon became clear that the pick-up and drop-off service that Shooli was originally conceived to be would limit its success, so in June of 2019 the company launched a nationwide mail-in service for shoe repairs. Today, a hefty chunk of business actually comes from the East coast, and the mail-in service constitutes the bulk of Shooli's business, with roughly 40% of Shooli's mail-in orders coming from areas like New York City and Boston. In true startup fashion, Shooli is still testing what works best, but turn-around times remain a week or less.

It's turned out that the dominant demographic of Shooli customers in the local drop-off market were customers in the 50- to 60-year-old age bracket and "millennials with their Red Wings — holy cow!" Flynn said of the leather work boots popular among Midwesterners. "They've been a huge market for us." On the mail-in side, most orders focus on specialty repairs that require sole and heel work.

Sanchez enjoys the challenges that these kinds of orders can bring.

"Some customers are very specific about what they want," he told Business Insider, holding up a pair of men's dress shoes that he altered to give the owner a little height boost for her wedding. He was in the process of taking the lift out of the shoes to return them back to their normal state when he remarked that the owner must have enjoyed her wedding, pointing to scuff marks on the top of the shoes.

When it comes to what it takes to accomplish something like growing a startup in a traditionally unexpected location, Flynn credits her dedication — citing cold nights of trudging through the snow to market her service at apartment buildings and poorly attended events — to her success.

"How long are you willing to stick with it? How long are you willing to grind and make it work?" she said. Despite sometimes crying in her car after such an event, so far not giving up has proved worth it for Flynn, considering the double-digit month-after-month growth her company is seeing today. "We've come full circle within the last year," she added.

  • You can manually delete app data on your iPhone to free up storage space when you're running low.
  • The data stored by your apps can take up a lot of space on your iPhone, and eventually even threaten to fill the phone's memory completely.
  • To clear app data on your iPhone, the best method is to delete an app off your iPhone through your Settings app, and then reinstall it.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

We pay a lot of money for our iPhones, and they're usually worth it — however, no matter how much we spend, we always seem to run out of storage space far too soon.

There are many ways to clear up space on your iPhone to make sure you have room for all the photos and apps you need. In fact, we have an entire article on the topic: "How to free up space on an iPhone that's running out of storage."

One method not discussed in that article, however, is how to delete app data on your iPhone. App data consists of all the various settings and documents that an app creates as you're using it, and depending on the app, can take up a sizable amount of data.

Clearing app data can help you reclaim space you need. Here's how to do it.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

iPhone 11 (From $699.99 at Best Buy)

How to delete app data on your iPhone

First, see which of your apps is taking up the most space.

1. Launch the Settings app.

2. Tap "General," and then "iPhone Storage."

IMG_6140.PNG

On that screen, you can scroll down to see how much space each of your apps is using. If you notice that an app or two are taking up a lot of space but you rarely use them, it's a good idea to delete that app's data.

And as it happens, with most apps, you can delete an app's data by just deleting the app. With a few apps, like Messages, your photo library, and your email, you can delete individual files to save space. For most apps, however, just follow these steps.

1. From the iPhone Storage screen, tap on any app you wish to delete.

2. Tap "Delete App" to remove it.

IMG_6140

On your iPhone's home screen, you can also hold a finger on an app icon and then tap the X icon that pops up to delete it. Or, if you're using iOS 13, tap and hold an app icon, select "Rearrange Apps," and then tap the X that pops up.

3. If you still want to use an app, just launch the App Store and reinstall the app you just deleted.

And that's that. Data gone, app restored.

21 collector's items that are actually worthless today

princess diana souvenir plate

Have you ever gone through your boxes from college or your children's old toys, only to come across something you think might be rare or worth a fortune?

For some, finding dust-covered pieces of art or toys from the '90s are the ticket to making big bucks. However, for most people, these items are practically worthless.

Some collectibles like Beanie Babies, Barbie dolls, or vintage band T-shirts might seem extremely valuable but are actually only worth a couple of dollars or a fraction of their original price. Other collectibles currently on the market might seem like a great investment but are unlikely to appreciate in value over time.

Here are 21 collector's items that are actually worthless today.

SEE ALSO: 35 things from the '90s that are worth a fortune today

Franklin Mint collectibles often sell for a fraction of what owners paid for them.

Franklin Mint collectibles are marketed as valuable items one can purchase as an investment in order to see the item's value appreciate over time. However, unfortunately for many owners of Franklin Mint dolls, collectible plates, glassware, diecast cars, silver ingots, coins, or medals, there is little chance of selling these mass-produced collectibles for more than what you originally paid for them.

While some sellers are trying to get around $200, or the original selling price, for Kate Middleton collectible dolls, most Franklin Mint dolls without their original box will sell for around $20 to $50.

Norman Rockwell collector plates are only worth about $10.

Franklin Mint also sold a line of collectible plates with Norman Rockwell paintings printed onto the surface. While the artist's paintings continue to evoke feelings of nostalgia and Americana among Baby Boomers, the plates have lost much of their original value over the years.

According to Antique Trader, Norman Rockwell plates once valued at $50 to $75 sell for $10 a plate.

Model train sets are worth less than you might think.

While model train sets can be fun for people young and old, they're definitely not going to pay your bills. According to major model train manufacturer Lionel, while earlier train sets may hold some value to collectors, newer versions may be practically worthless.

"The value of a particular set or piece is dependent on several factors such as condition, rarity, and the presence of the original box in good condition," the company says.

New baseball cards are usually only worth a couple of dollars.

While some baseball cards can hold extreme value, like the Babe Ruth baseball card that fetched $500,000 at auction, most are basically worthless. Baseball card collections can hold great sentimental value — but the best one could hope for when selling collections that contain only newer cards is a mere couple of dollars.

Ceramic or porcelain dolls tend to hover around the $10 price mark.

Not only can porcelain and ceramic dolls be a little creepy, they're also not worth as much money as one might think. While some dolls can potentially be worth hundreds of dollars depending on their condition, current fashion trends, and rarity, most porcelain or China Bisque dolls will sell for around $10

Pogs from the '90s can go for under $1 each.

This '90s fad has resulted in many basements and attics becoming overcrowded with small, circular collectibles known as Pogs — many of which are completely worthless. While some Pogs can be worth a decent amount of money, individual Pogs can go for under $1 and even larger collections will sell for around $10.

Recent comic books aren't as valuable as older ones.

Rare or older comic books can be valuable, but newer comic books won't sell for much more than their original price — and that's only if they're in mint condition. Due to the fact that most of the superhero characters from comic books in the 1980s and onwards are well-established, newer comic books are simply not as valuable as original comics from the 1930s through the 1950s.

Royal family memorabilia is mass-produced and usually not very valuable.

While you might think a plate with Kate Middleton or Meghan Markle's face on it could earn you a pretty penny someday, you're most likely mistaken. Royal family memorabilia is widely dispersed and manufactured for many different occasions, including jubilees and weddings. While these commemorative items might look nice in your kitchen, these mass-produced collectibles aren't worth much money nowadays.

"Star Wars" toys from the '70s can earn you big bucks, but later action figures and toys haven't appreciated in value.

It may come as a surprise that not all "Star Wars" toys are worth boatloads of cash. Don't be mistaken — "Star Wars" toys from the 1970s or rare collectibles from the franchise can definitely make you rich. However, the Chicago Tribune explains that mass-produced action figures and toys from the 1990s and early 2000s have never really appreciated in value.

Most vinyl records are only worth a couple of dollars.

While some vinyl records can be worth a lot of money, most are basically worthless. While original Beatles albums or other rare pressings might fetch tens of thousands or even millions at auction, many vinyl records will only end up in the dollar bin at your local record store. If you're looking to sell a vinyl record you believe might be of some value, it's important to cross-reference with other sales of the same record, or simply get it appraised by an expert.

Barbie dolls are usually only valuable if they're rare and in mint condition.

Rare or older Barbie dolls have been known to make people quite a lot of money at auction. However, your average run-of-the-mill Barbie doll collection probably won't make you rich anytime soon. Most Barbie dolls in good condition can be found on eBay for around $10 to $20, not far off from what they were originally sold for.

Antique "silver" serving plates look expensive but are actually not worth a lot of money.

One might think that the sophisticated-looking silver serving platter your grandmother left you could make you rich one day. We hate to say it, but this seemingly expensive collectible is practically worthless today. Most vintage "silver platters" go for around $10 to $50 on eBay.

Pez dispensers can sell for as low as a couple of dollars on eBay.

While some Pez dispensers can hold value, most of the collectible candy dispensers are basically worthless. Collectors can hope to sell their individual Pez dispensers for a couple of dollars on eBay, and whole collections could only be worth slightly more.

Stamps valued at hundreds of dollars have sold for much, much less.

While stamp collecting used to be all the rage, it's rare for stamps to be of significant value — though there are definitely exceptions. Most stamps were at one time mass-produced, drastically reducing their value to any collector or stamp dealer. Older stamps can be of some value, but only if they're in good condition and haven't succumbed to creasing or water damage. Perhaps the worst news for stamp collectors is that even stamps valued at hundreds of dollars are fetching just a fraction of their true worth at auction, according to The Guardian.

Vintage band T-shirts aren't as valuable as you might think.

There's nothing more rock-and-roll than a band T-shirt from the 1960s or 1970s. However, while your vintage tee might earn you approval at the Rolling Stones reunion tour, it's unlikely to make you tons of money if you were to sell it. Most vintage band T-shirts sell for around $20 on eBay, and even shirts from popular bands haven't sold for much money. Rare T-shirts, however, can go for much more

Funko Pop! figurines are usually valued under $20.

The adorable collectible figurines, known as Funko! Pops, are extremely popular nowadays. Modeled after movie stars, famous celebrities, "Game of Thrones" characters, and more, a majority of the collectible action figures are valued at under $20. However, since the figurines are relatively new, it's hard to say how they will appreciate over time.

Most vintage Playboy magazines are relatively worthless to collectors.

While vintage copies of Playboy magazine might look cool in your bachelor pad, it's unlikely they're worth much nowadays. Older copies and first editions of the magazine can be worth a pretty penny, but most copies from the 1970s and onwards are relatively worthless and will most likely only sell for a couple of dollars.

Most Beanie Babies are only worth a couple of dollars, contrary to popular belief.

A couple of Ty Beanie Babies have sold for huge amounts of money, but that doesn't mean you should list every Beanie Baby you have on eBay in the hope that it's valuable. Before tossing out the tiny stuffed animals, make sure you don't have any rare ones, but the rest are most likely worthless or only worth a couple of dollars.

Pandora charms can be bought online for less than the original selling price.

As the third-largest jewelry company in the US, Pandora exploded onto the scene with its simple bracelets and mix-and-match charms in the early to mid-2000s. Pandora charms run for about $40 to $65 on the company's website, but many older or discontinued charms are being sold on eBay for as low as $10 or $20 as interest in the charm bracelets has faded in the past couple of years.

Precious Moments figurines sell for between $5 and $20 on eBay, less than their typical selling price.

When it comes to these sweet, symbolic collectibles, prices vary greatly. While some Precious Moments figurines could be worth a fortune now — like this retired "God Loveth A Cheerful Giver" design worth around $300 — most figurines sell for between $5 and $20 on eBay, less than their typical selling price.

Vintage college swag has more sentimental value than monetary value.

When it comes to old college gear like sweatshirts and pennants, you might be better off hanging on to them to relive the glory days, rather than trying to sell them to a collector. Most vintage college sweatshirts run for about $10 to $30 on eBay, while felt pennants can sell for around $10

Apple Watch

While your Apple Watch is designed to sync with your iPhone to provide you with notifications from the apps you care about most, sometimes the alerts can be quite loud.

How to put your Apple Watch on silent mode

If you want to silence the volume so your watch never sounds, you can toggle the "Silent Mode" option just under "Alert Volume" on the Watch app, ensuring the bar is turned green.

NOW WATCH: People are still debating the pink or grey sneaker, 2 years after it went viral. Here's the real color explained.

The best bidets

$

0
  • As everything around us becomes smarter and more tech-focused, electronics have come to the bathroom in the form of multi-feature bidets.
  • The Toto Washlet S300e bidet seat has everything you could want in a bidet, plus built-in smart sanitation capabilities that make it the best of the best.

The typical American response to seeing a bidet in a bathroom is to raise an eyebrow or snicker, but to the rest of the civilized world, bidets are rather common. Bidets simply provide extra comfort and cleaning in the bathroom, better cleaning, in fact, than standard toilet paper. They can be especially useful for those with certain medical conditions, physical disabilities, and pregnant women, but even if you don't fall into any of those categories, you can still enjoy the benefits of a bidet.

Bidets (pronounced 'bih-days') are primarily purchased for hygienic reasons. They provide a better cleaning than toilet paper and can save you money over time. In the "Proremodeler" article, "Bidets Finally Making Inroads in US Bathrooms," Philip J. Buffington, M.D., Chief Medical Officer at The Urology Group, in Cincinnati stated, "If you took bacteria cultures after a bowel movement using a bidet versus toilet paper, you would see why it makes much better health sense to use a bidet."

So why are bidets so weird to Americans? There are a handful of theories, but the most plausible one alludes much to an outdated stereotype about how bidets are used. The word bidet comes from the French word for small horse because centuries ago, to use an original bidet, you would have to sit and straddle it as you washed with the water in the basin and your hands.

This isn't how they are used anymore, but because they were never introduced in the US, it's generally thought that Americans, who are usually so picky about hygiene, prefer the paper shield between hand and butt. Americans tend to be hush-hush about bathroom things, in general, considering the first toilet flushing didn't show up in cinema until the 1960's movie "Psycho" and we still call it "the bathroom" even though many personal or public bathrooms don't actually have a 'bath' in them.

Another misconception is that bidets are just for women. That's simply not true. They can be useful to women during pregnancy but are also very hygienic for men to use with or without toilet paper. In fact, many who have converted over to bidets simply refuse to go back to regular toilets, which is where travel bidets can come in handy.

The bottom line is, although bidets are somewhat foreign to Americans, they provide massive improvements in hygiene and comfort. A bidet is one of the most practical products you can invest in because you'll use it multiple times a day. The only downside is the upfront cost — and bidets are not cheap — but it will pay for itself over time.

Types of Bidets

  • Bidet seats, which are installed in your existing toilet, are the most common. They have a movable or fixed nozzle that is attached to an existing toilet on the back or side toilet rim. Alternatively, bidets are constructed as part of the toilet itself. Bidet seats are occasionally controlled mechanically, but usually they're powered electrically and have special features.
  • Shower bidets are handheld devices that resemble the nozzle on a kitchen sink sprayer. You use the nozzle to spray the area of yourself that needs to be cleaned. They're not as popular as bidet seats because you have to be pretty flexible and mobile to use them and also because they make it easier to accidentally get water on your clothing or all over the place.
  • Travel bidets look like water bottles with a curved nozzle at the top rather than a flat top, straw insert, or suction area. To use them, you squeeze the bottle and aim the nozzle at the area that needs cleaning. They're good for those who have converted to bidets and can't use the restroom without one, or for those who want to try out what a bidet feels like, without investing hundreds up front.

Bidet Features and our picks

Some features to look for when shopping for a bidet are nozzle options, water flow patterns, washing modes, water temperature control, remote control or control panel access, air drying, and some deluxe features such as sanitation technology and deodorizing components. Almost all bidet seats will have some type of water temperature control that you determine using either a remote control or a control panel. Many bidet seats also have air drying features built in.

You can find deluxe features on affordable bidets seats, and tons of special features on premium ones. Expensive add-ons include hydraulic seat lids, interchangeable seat levels, deodorizing capabilities, night lights, programmable user settings, and other features that make them more luxurious.

The following are our top picks for bidets, which have been chosen based on expert online ratings, research, and customer reviews.

Here are the best bidets you can buy:

The best bidet overall

Hi-tech and extremely hygienic, the Toto Washlet S300e bidet seat is low maintenance, with an installation that's inexpensive and easy.

The Toto Washlet S300e may be the ultimate self-cleaning bidet seat with its special electrolyzed water sanitation feature. The bidet creates and sprays electrolyzed water into the bowl after every use and after eight hours of inactivity to maintain freshness. This same electrolyzed water is also used to automatically rinse the wand before and after every use ensuring hygiene is a top priority. We also love the wireless backlit remote control that very conveniently allows you to save two user settings.

Beyond the unique sanitation properties and savable user profiles, the Toto Washlet S300e has all the features we've come to expect out of a high-quality bidet, including various spray options — rear, soft rear, front — oscillating and pulsating options, a pre-mist, and five settings each for water, air dryer, and seat temperature. Water heats up instantly to ensure comfort, and the wand is fully adjustable to give you a personalized clean. It also has a soft close lid, air deodorizer, and automatic energy saving settings.

On Jbidet it holds a 4.5 out of 5-star rating, and Amazon reviewers generally give the product two thumbs up. This reviewer says it provides a solution for pre-cleaning. Because the price is up there, many reviewers touch on cost, but most agree that "It's worth every penny."

Yet there are others who don't think the product is worth the cost, such this buyer who explains how it failed after five years. Other buyers mainly have problems with delivery or say that the water pressure isn't what they expected.

Overall, for a price that's not ridiculous and an abundance of specialized features, the Toto Washlet S300e is our top pick.

Pros: Unique electrolyzed water sanitation system, programmable user settings, five settings each for water, seat, and fan dry temperatures, water heats up instantly

Cons: Expensive, water pressure may not be as strong as expected, questionable long-term use durability

The best bidet for newbies

The Toto Washlet C100 is easy to use, not crazy expensive, and a natural go-to for beginners.

For a simple and straightforward bidet cleaning experience, check out the Toto Washlet C100. The bidet features an adjustable wand that you can alter to work with your body, which means no sitting in an awkward position to get a proper clean.

Beyond the spray positioning, it also allows you to pick the precise temperature and the spray type you prefer. Plus, you can access all the controls on the convenient side arm control panel, so you can customize your cleaning experience without searching for a remote.

The bidet seat isn't cheap, but it's definitely on the lower end in the bidet category and comes with many features of luxury models. It has various cleanse settings, including rear, soft rear, and front. The Toto also has an oscillating spray option and five different settings for water pressure. The seat has a soft close lid, is heated, and has a quick-release function that allows for easy cleaning.

This bidet even has a smart seat sensor that shoots out a pre-mist when you sit on it. The water, heated seat, and air dryer each have three temperature settings to give you even more customization options, and it also comes with a built-in air deodorizer and a power-saving mode.

The Toto Washlet C100 is featured as the number two pick for bidets by The Wirecutter. Jbidet gives it a 4.4 out of 5-star rating in its review, and ToiletTops rates it at 4.3 out of 5-stars for ease of use.

Of course, it's not perfect. Some Amazon reviewers raise concerns about the size of the seat, stating that it's too small. While most buyers say installation is a breeze, some warn that you need to purchase extra parts to get the bidet seat to work. That's what happened to this reviewer and others who had to buy the Toto THU9090R 6-Inch Wash Let Hose Extension Kit. It may depend on your current plumbing situation whether you need the extension or not.

Overall, it's a good value for the price, and beginners won't be intimidated by it.

Pros: Good value for the price, easy to use, adjustable wand, five different settings for water pressure, three different temperature settings for water, heated seat, and air dry

Cons: Installation may be troublesome, makes the size of your toilet seat smaller

The best bidet for travel

The Brondell Travel Bidet is so discreet it looks like an oddly shaped water bottle, and it's easy to use and effective.

If you fall in love with bidets and just can't feel fresh and clean without one, the Brondell GS-70 GoSpa Travel Bidet may be just the thing you've been waiting for. The travel bidet fits easily into a purse or briefcase and comes with a discreet carrying bag. Simply fill it with cool or warm water, screw on the cap, point the ergonomic nozzle in the correct direction, and squeeze the soft bottle to get a cleansing bidet wash anywhere you want.

The angled spray design helps you get a perfect aim. The bottle itself is a full-size 400ml reservoir so as to provide a thorough cleaning and it has an ergonomic design that fits easily into your hand. As a travel bidet, the nozzle has a convenient and mess-free design so it packs up easily and can be taken anywhere you need.

While there are other travel bidets that have more advanced features, such as the Toto HW300-W Portable Travel Washlet, we find the discreet nature of the GoSpa to be very travel-friendly.

The Brondell GS-70 GoSpa Travel Bidet is listed number one on ToiletBidet.com's article "The Definitive Guide To Portable Travel Bidets," as well as number one on Jbidet's article called the "Best Travel Bidet."

However, some Amazon reviewers comment that the bidet does make some noise as you squeeze it and water comes out, but most don't see it as that big of a deal. Others note that the stream is not as strong as a regular bidet, but as this reviewer points out, it's better than nothing. Overall, reviewers mainly state the travel bidet works as expected and that it's great for on the go or at home.

Pros: Low price, compact and discreet design, holds a good amount of water, may be used as an alternative to expensive permanent bidets

Cons: Stream not as strong as on a regular bidet, makes some noise which isn't ideal in public restroom settings

The best bidet for luxurious cleaning

The Bliss Electric Bidet Seat is a feature-filled bidet seat with enough add-ons to justify the luxury of owning one.

If you're looking for a bidet seat with all the fancy bells and whistles, the Bliss Electric BioBidet is well worth considering. It has a stainless steel nozzle with a patented 3-in-1 technology that provides a vortex water stream, excellent posterior wash, and softer feminine wash with bubble infusion technology.

The eco-friendly hybrid on-demand water heating technology ensures the water temperature is just the way you like it. The bidet provides a wider than average water stream with your choice of a pleasant oscillating or massaging pulsating clean.

Although the bidet has many features that make it look and feel high end, the nozzle is the real gamer changer here. The bidet features a patent-pending Hydro-Flush technology that cleans the nozzle from inside-out, ensuring maximum hygiene. The CleanSurge Rapid Self-Cleaning is an exclusive feature that uses a built-in motor that repeatedly extracts and retracts the nozzle while water flows over it at the push of a button.

Using the self-cleaning nozzle, you can flush out any water minerals and debris through a specially located drain at the nozzle tip. Because the model is motor-driven, it's more reliable, super accurate, and consistent — even during movement. The nozzle is made of pure stainless steel, too, which makes it more durable and easy to clean.

Other perks include a heated seat, night light, wireless remote control, warm air dry, slow-closing seat function, a built-in deodorizer, and a power-saving mode. The remote is sleek and modernized. The cool blue night light makes your bathroom more welcoming, and the touchscreen angled side panel adds even more luxury. The fact that it has a wider than average water stream with both oscillating and massaging pulsating clean options just adds another level of luxuriousness.

Besides some minor delivery issues, most Amazon reviewers say the bidet is well worth the cost.Reviewers also note that the installation is easy. One buyer says that it's a must-have if you have sensitive skin or other health issues that require extra maintenance.

The only issue more than a few reviewers have is with the fan function. Some say it either gets uncomfortably hot or doesn't do any good. Of course, the price may be a drawback as well.

Pros: Self-cleaning, instant water heating, three separate wash options, heated seat, night light, built-in deodorizer

Cons: Price tag, fan function may not be perfect

The best bidet on a budget

The GenieBidet Seat is surprisingly affordable, yet it's still customizable to your needs

The GenieBidet Seat provides a pleasant cleaning experience, without the need for expensive installation costs. In fact, it only takes about 30 to 45 minutes to install, and then you're good to go. Because the installation is so easy, it's also simple to remove if you have visitors who aren't familiar or comfortable with a bidet.

In addition to a low price, we like that it has some of the added perks you usually only find in more expensive models. The bidet has a specially designed contoured seat that helps to provide maximum comfort and features a nozzle that extends from under the seat to provide a refreshing ambient temperature water cleansing. It also has both rear and feminine cleaning, dual retractable self-cleaning nozzles, and a slow closing lid. It's suitable for an individual or families and can be used by children, adults, and seniors.

Various Amazon reviewers do comment that the bidet makes the size of your toilet smaller, which can be a hassle.  Overall, though, most reviewers love this bidet — especially for the price.

Pros: Easy to install, stylish design, easy to clean, impressive number of features for the price tag

Cons: Reduces size of toilet opening, may produce a falling forward effect when you sit on it

How bidets benefit the environment and your wallet

Still on the fence? Here's more info.

Bidets are certainly not cheap but they can save you money in the long run. The average roll of toilet paper costs $3, and the average person will use 57 sheets a day. Now if the rolls being used have an average of 264 sheets, that means in a year, you'll be purchasing 81 rolls of toilet paper and spending $234. When you go through the calculations of the cost of a bidet, on average purchasing a bidet or bidet seat will easily cut your toilet paper spending by 75% or more over time.

Besides being more sanitary and cost-effective than toilet tissue, bidets are also much less stressful on the environment. In the "Scientific American" article, "Wipe or Wash? Do Bidets Save Forest and Water Resources," Justin Thomas, editor of the website "MetaEfficient," said that Americans use 36.5 billion rolls of toilet paper every year, representing the downfall of some 15 million trees.

Beyond the trees that go into creating each square of toilet paper, more than 400 million gallons of water are used to make it, too. Then, 253,000 tons of chlorine are used to bleach it and 17.3 terawatts of electricity are used to manufacture it. Add to that shipping costs, and you have a very expensive product that has an impact on the environment.

Sure bidets use more water, but it's not as detrimental to the environment as flushing trees down the toilet. "The amount of water used by a typical bidet is about 1/8 of a gallon, with the average toilet using about four gallons per flush," the article points out.

Lloyd Alter of the website "Treehugger" went on to explain that making a single roll of toilet paper requires 37 gallons of water, 1.3 kilowatt/hours (KWh) of electricity and some 1.5 pounds of wood to create. Case in point, bidets are better for the environment, but they're also easier on your wallet in the long run.

  • You can turn on emergency alerts on your iPhone through the Notifications menu in your Settings app, though it's likely enabled by default.
  • Emergency alerts will cause your iPhone to ring in a variety of situations, including extreme weather conditions or when a missing child is reported nearby.
  • It's a simple four-step process to make sure you're in the know for all major emergency alerts.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

We've all dreamt of being the hero, able to help in the event of any emergency. And while your iPhone can't give you superpowers, it can keep you aware of the emergencies happening around you through its alert system.

The emergency alert system built into your iPhone (along with most phones nowadays) will cause your phone to sound whenever it receives a notification from your local public safety agency. These notifications can include inclement weather reports, active shooter warnings, suspect descriptions, and more.

So for those iPhone users who are interested in hearing about every emergency nearby, there's an easy way to make sure you stay updated all local emergency alerts.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

iPhone 11 (From $699.99 at Best Buy)

How to turn on emergency alerts on your iPhone

1. Open the iPhone's Settings app.

2. Scroll down to "Notifications." The setting's red icon will have a square with a circle in the top right corner. Tap it.

IMG_5645

3. Scroll toward the bottom of the page, past the downloaded apps listed under "Notification Style," all the way to "Government Alerts."

IMG_5644

4. Under the "Government Alerts" heading, you'll see three options: "AMBER Alerts," "Emergency Alerts," and "Public Safety Alerts." If the switches next to them are grayed out, tap the switches to turn them on. They should all be green.

You'll now be among the first to receive important information about inclement weather and other important news.

Just be wary that, whether you like it or not, Presidential Alerts are mandatory, and unlike Emergency Alerts, they can't be toggled on or off.

Hotel review: Le Méridien San Francisco is a great option for comfort, value, and excellent last-minute deals

Le Meridien SF 4x3

  • Looking for a last-minute solo stay in San Francisco, I selected Le Méridien San Francisco for its combination of location, comfort, and relatively cheap price.
  • Le Méridien is a renowned luxury brand within the Marriott Bonvoy portfolio, offering the chance to stay at a hotel that can typically be quite expensive while earning loyalty points.
  • Despite my last minute booking, I was able to snag a huge corner room with a view of the Bay Bridge for $149, making Le Méridien in the Financial District surprisingly affordable.

As a former resident of the San Francisco Bay Area, I often bunk with one of my many friends in town when visiting. But on one recent visit, my plans changed at the last minute. At 6 p.m. on my only night in the city, my lodging fell through. My only options were to either crash on another friend's couch in an open-plan apartment — a generous offer I would have accepted were I not such a notoriously sensitive sleeper — or find a hotel when it was already practically dinnertime.

I chose the latter. I started searching online with the goal of a four-star property in a reasonably accessible part of town that was comfortable, clean, safe, and welcoming enough.

I settled on Le Méridien San Francisco in the Financial District after I saw it advertised online for $149. It seemed like an exceptionally good price for a global chain with a luxury reputation (might as well earn those Marriott Bonvoy points), with zero advance planning, in a bustling and walkable part of town.

While procrastinating doesn't always work out, this last-minute choice certainly hit the sweet spot between budget and comfort. Of course, prices are subject to change and highly dependent on the time of year and season, which can impact pricing. You won't always see this price, but at the time of publication, it was indeed offered for a same-day booking. Two months out, it looks much pricier.

Here's why I would stay at Le Méridien San Francisco again, and next time, even plan it in advance.

Keep reading to see why I was so impressed by Le Méridien San Francisco.

Because I walked in off the street with no existing reservation, I encountered a delay at the check-in desk. I told the staff I had seen a $149 rate online but wanted to book direct. They were able to match it, though there was some difficulty making it happen quickly. I'd arrived when a portion of the internal computer system was apparently closed to new bookings, so I faced a delay of perhaps 10 or 15 minutes.

But ultimately, as promised, they offered me the room at that rate — and chocolates. A tray of dark varieties from Ghirardelli, a San Francisco company and tourist attraction with its own building a three-minute walk away, made its way to me as I waited. It was a nice touch, and much appreciated treat to help edge off hunger. It was right before dinner time, and waiting in line to check in to my room wasn't how I'd anticipated spending the evening.

After schlepping my backpack around the city all day, I was relieved to find myself in the hotel's comfortable lobby as I waited for my room. It was somewhat small and not exactly grand, but generally welcoming. Furnishings were a take on mid-century, largely sophisticated greys, with pops of color coming from such details as orange pillows.

I knew from my key that I had been assigned a room on a high floor, the 18th. And I also knew that it would have two double beds because it was all that was available so late in the game. I always find it slightly strange to sleep in a room with two beds when I'm the only guest, and I would have preferred a King or Queen, but last-minute plans often come with a few compromises.

The first thing I noticed when I opened my room was a gash on the cabinet adjacent to the door, possibly made by the door swinging into it. I also noticed some worn carpeting. It did not make for an impeccable start, but the size of the room and the view more than made up for its shortcomings.

Compare room types and prices on Marriott's website

I happened to score a corner room, which was likely why I was treated to such an expansive room size. It was much bigger than I would have expected from a vertical urban environment, and with far more space than I needed for one night.

But more significantly, the room had floor-to-ceiling windows at the corner, facing east and south. The timing coincided with sunset, and the short time I spent in this room afforded one of the highlights of my brief trip: a prime view of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, spanning the bay, blanketed in pink.

After heading out for dinner with friends in another part of town, I came back and fell asleep with reasonable ease (and that's a tall order for me). The bed was plenty comfortable, the channels and entertainment guide on the TV ample, and noise bleed was no issue.

Le Méridien San Francisco comes with the standard amenities you'd expect from a global hotel chain catering to a Financial District crowd made up of mostly working professionals and tourists. There's in-room dining, high-speed internet (free for Marriott Bonvoy guests), a fitness center, and eye-poppingly expensive on-site parking. If possible, avoid having a car at all costs; walking, rideshare, and public transit are much better options in most cases.

There are plenty of varied dining options within an easy walk, and two options on-site. The street-level Bar 333 opens in the afternoon and serves share plates and dinner plus a well-priced happy hour.

Park Grill, located on the third floor, serves American fare for breakfast and lunch. It's a fine option to start the day with coffee and made-to-order eggs without having to leave the building.

There's also over 13,00 square feet of meeting space spread out through a total of 15 rooms.

Located in San Francisco's Financial District, Le Méridien is exceptionally walkable to a wide array of businesses, shops, entertainment, and dining options.

I took my laptop for a walk to the locally known Philz Coffee (there are actually two easily walkable locations), where I was able to bang out a couple of hours of work with free Wi-Fi and excellent avocado toast.

Also a short walk away, the Ferry Building terminal is a great place for food and drink, and souvenirs. Plus, the walk affords great views of the bay. You can easily get to Chinatown, Market Street, or the cable cars on foot from Le Méridien

The heavily trafficked Le Méridien San Francisco has generated nearly 2,400 TripAdvisor reviews, making it No. 47 of 244 ranked hotels in the city, with a four-star rating.

Some more critical reviews note that the building has aged from visitors' earlier stays and that it's in need of an overhaul. Those critiques are accurately noted in my experience and dovetail my observation of the nicked furniture, worn carpeting, and other cosmetic finishes in need of an upgrade. But the location and affordable price point, as also noted in some reviews, made up for the kinks.

Who stays here: Professional business travelers or city sightseers of all ages guided by convenience and a moderate price point.

We like: Free coffee on the third floor to start the day seamlessly, and caffeinated.

We love (don't miss this feature!): The location of the Le Méridien San Francisco makes it ideal for both walkability and views.

We think you should know: Portions of the hotel and its finishes are in need of cosmetic upgrades. Don't expect newly renovated rooms.

We'd do this differently next time: I'd take advantage of the prime location and spend more time in the neighborhood around the hotel. San Francisco is typically very expensive, making the combined price and address almost too good to be true. Next time, I'll also book in advance through Marriott to avoid delays at check-in, and have a wider variety of room types to consider.

The Le Méridien San Francisco strikes the just-right balance between nice amenities and a down-to-earth price point, even on short notice (or no lead time at all). The accommodations are ample in both size and comfort, and the location is ideal for a walkable visit to the city.

With rates starting at $149, it feels like a secret most haven't caught on to, making it a smart option in an otherwise expensive and congested market.

  • Music technology has progressed quite a bit in the past few decades. We've gone from vinyl records, tapes, and CDs to digital music files.
  •  If you long for vinyl's rich sound, the Sony PS-HX500 USB Turntable is a great choice, because you can play records and rip your vinyl to digital music files.

One unwritten rule of style is that what once was popular will come around again. Things like shoulder pads in dresses, mirrored sunglasses, and glittery shirts are coming back in style.

But when it comes to technology and media, most old hardware doesn't come back. Nobody's clamoring for a permanent return to VCRs, black-and-white TVs, or 8-track audio tapes.

For some reason, though, there is one piece of technology from the past that is making a big-time comeback — vinyl records. We think it's because playing vinyl just seems cool and retro.

If you are ready to join the movement and start playing your old records again — or maybe even buy some new vinyl — we're guessing you don't have a working record player at hand. You'll need a nice new turntable to play your records, so we've rounded up the best ones you can buy.

Here are the best turntables you can buy:

DON'T MISS: The 3 things you need to create an amazing turntable setup for under $350

The best turntable overall

The Sony PS-HX500 USB Turntable lets you play vinyl records and digitize them, so your record collection is portable.

If you're buying a turntable, it's probably because you like the sound of vinyl. But with the Sony PS-HX500 Hi Res USB Turntable, you're not limited to just listening to your records on the turntable.

The PS-HX500 has a USB port that allows you to play the vinyl on the turntable and rip the music to a high-res WAV or DSD file stored on a computer. That way, you can merge the best of both worlds: old-school vinyl records and new digital music files.

Now don't expect those digital music files ripped from vinyl to sound impeccable. Some people don't notice a significant difference, but others say the digital file doesn't quite capture the best parts of the sound of vinyl, nor does it match the pristine quality of original digital files.

Regardless of what the serious audiophiles say, the Sony turntable can record up to DSD 5.6 MHz audio quality, which is quite good. In its review, What HiFi said this is one of the best USB-ripping turntables you can buy — period.

Even with its somewhat high price, Home Theater Review says the PS-HX500 is a good value because of its excellent digital capabilities.

Although most buyers and reviewers rate the Sony turntable favorably, Wired says the overall design of the Sony PS-HX500 doesn't justify its price tag, as it doesn't offer enough high-end components versus other USB turntables in its price range.

Pros: Delivers the ability to rip vinyl music to a digital format, outperforms many other USB-enabled turntables, produces good audio quality on the turntable, stylish design and look

Cons: High price tag for an entry-level turntable, doesn't have high-end components

Buy the Sony PS-HX500 USB Turntable on Amazon for $298

The best entry-level turntable

You can play your vinyl over your existing wireless speaker system with the affordable Audio-Technica AT-LP60-BT Bluetooth Turntable.

You easily can spend several hundred dollars or more on a new turntable and speaker system. But it's pretty tough to justify that kind of outlay if you are less interested in pristine audio quality from your vinyl and more interested in having fun playing your records.

The Audio-Technica AT-LP60 Bluetooth Turntable carries a lower price point than most turntables with decent audio quality, which makes it a good entry-level option. It can't quite match the rich audio quality of some more expensive models, but it compares favorably to similarly priced turntables.

This turntable is Bluetooth enabled, so you can connect it to your existing wireless speaker system at home. That way you don't have to spend extra money on wired speakers.

The PC Mag review says having the option of using Bluetooth wireless speakers or traditional wired speakers is especially helpful, although the Bluetooth pairing process can be tricky. Plus, when you're using the Bluetooth connection, the audio quality is better than expected, according to My Mac, giving you a nice option for porting your vinyl music anywhere.

However, don't expect to find high-quality components in this Audio-Technica turntable. Trusted Reviews called the unit "plasticky," but using cheaper components is understandable at this price.

Pros: Outperforms other low-priced turntables for audio quality, works with existing wireless speakers you may already own over a Bluetooth connection, fun for starting out with playing vinyl

Cons: Audio quality doesn't match pricier units, making Bluetooth connection can be tricky

Buy the Audio-Technica AT-LP60 Bluetooth Turntable on Amazon for $149

The best minimalistic turntable

The Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Turntable will grab your attention with its beautifully simple design, but it'll keep that attention with great music quality.

Those of you who are new to playing vinyl will want a turntable that's easy to set up, but also delivers good music quality for the price. The Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Turntable is a popular choice because it checks all the boxes.

This Pro-Ject turntable will grab your attention with its minimalistic design. It doesn't have visible buttons or ports, so it's a simple turntable with arm on top of a base. You can get it in a few colors, including the red one pictured above.

Beyond its simple design, the What HiFi review says this turntable delivers sound clarity and detail far beyond what you'd expect from a turntable in its price range. Tech Radar calls the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon a perfect turntable for those who are new to playing vinyl.

However, the fact that you must manually change the spin speed is a disappointment because you have to remove the platter and manually move the belt to swap between 33 1/3 and 45 rpm.

Audio Advice says this turntable delivers a greater audio quality than other turntables in its price range, especially in terms of any distortion you'll receive, although it does lag behind high-end models in delivering bass sounds.

Pros: Very nice design that keeps it simple, delivers better and cleaner audio quality than you'd expect in this price range, works well for those new to vinyl or for those wanting a mid-range unit

Cons: Must manually change the platter speed by moving the belt, some components feel inexpensive

Buy the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Turntable from Amazon for $399

The best bargain-priced turntable

If you want to dip your toe into vinyl, but you don't want to break the bank, the Musitrend Turntable Portable Suitcase is easy to use and inexpensive.

Portable suitcase turntables are easy to use, and they don't cost all that much. If you're looking to jump back into the world of using vinyl, but you don't want to go broke doing it, you're probably looking at this style of turntable.

One of the most affordable suitcase-style turntables is the Musitrend Turntable Portable Suitcase record player. Now, this model will have little to no appeal for people who want the highest possible audio quality. The inexpensive components in the turntable just aren't of that quality.

Still, its $70 price point is tough to beat, so it's a popular choice among newbies who are joining the world of vinyl. Not only is the Musitrend Turntable Portable Suitcase unit inexpensive, but it also ships with a speaker built into the suitcase-style housing. That way, you don't have to spend extra money on speakers, according to the Lyrtech review.

However, don't expect much in terms of sharp audio quality with this simple built-in speaker. If you want better audio quality, you will want to spend some extra money on external speakers.

Mac Sources says this inexpensive suitcase-style turntable is perfect for listening to audio spoken records that accompany children's books, like you may have done as kids a few decades ago.

If you want an easy-to-use, basic turntable, Tabers Best Reviews says this Musitrend turntable is perfect. You just turn it on and begin using it immediately with no assembly or adjustments needed.

Pros: Very good price point for a starter record player, includes a built-in speaker to give you a good value, portable style turntable that's easy to carry, can be operated immediately out of the box

Cons: Music quality will be below average with built-in speaker, some components are not of a great quality

Buy the Musitrend Turntable Portable Suitcase on Amazon for $54.99

The best high-end turntable

If you have enough room in your budget and you're ready for a step up in the quality of your turntable, the Marantz TT-15S1 Reference Belt Drive Turntable is a winner.

When looking for any product, we all have a price in our heads that we think marks a good value. For example, I hate paying more than $12 for a pizza … unless it has Canadian bacon. Then the budget goes out the window.

When you start looking at picking up a turntable, we're guessing you probably have a price point in mind. We're also guessing it's not going to involve four figures, but if it does, this is your turntable.

Certainly, the Marantz TT-15S1 Reference Belt Drive Turntable isn't cheap, and it really isn't made as an entry-level turntable. But those who own and love using this turntable repeatedly call it an incredibly great value, as it delivers more features than what you normally find for the price.

Tech Radar agrees that it seems silly to call a turntable with a four-figure price tag a steal, but the range and clarity the TT-15S1 delivers does make it a good value.

One reason why this turntable is such a steal is because it ships with the Clearaudio Virtuoso phono cartridge, which has nearly a four-figure price point when sold separately.

World of Turntables calls this Marantz turntable the best one you can buy for less than $2,000, because it has a very easy-to-use design a produces excellent audio quality.

The Gear Patrol review says you'll be amazed by the difference in how your vinyl music sounds on this turntable versus a lower-priced turntable.

Pros: A good value versus other turntables in this price range, includes high-end cartridge for great sound quality, easily outperforms beginner-level turntables in terms of rich sound output

Cons: High price point for beginners, no dust cover included

Buy the Marantz TT-15S1 Reference Belt Drive Turntable on Amazon for $1,197 (originally $1,499)

How do turntables work?

Turntables are simple pieces of technology, according to Crutchfield. The needle (or stylus) is attached to a phono cartridge and tone arm. The needle fits inside the grooves on the record.

The grooves in a record have tiny peaks and valleys that represent the music in digital data form. (Think of digital ones and zeros as the peaks and valleys.) The needle converts the data in the grooves of the vinyl to an electrical signal that the phono cartridge reads. You'll place the vinyl record on the platter, which spins it so the needle can read the data in the grooves as the record moves beneath the needle.

If you want a turntable with better audio quality, look for the best phono cartridge you can afford. Some turntables even allow you to swap out the phono cartridge as an upgrade. It's also important to have a turntable that resists vibrations, which can cause misreads of the peaks and valleys, according to Pro-Ject Audio.

Usually, high-end turntables aimed at those seeking the best audio quality require you to buy all the individual components of your setup separately.

Simple, inexpensive turntables are the easiest to operate, as they have all components ready to go, but they fall behind in audio quality.

Modern turntables work a lot like their counterparts from decades ago, according to Consumer Reports, although some models include newer technology like USB ports, allowing you to convert your vinyl music to digital music. Others have Bluetooth capabilities, so you can send the audio signal to a wireless speaker system.

Depending on the one you choose, you may need a few accessories to use your turntable. Some turntables are open to the air, so you may need to buy a cover to protect it from dust. You may also need a receiver to pass the sound from the turntable to the speakers.

When it comes to choosing the speakers, you'll have the option of powered and passive speakers, as we at Business Insider discussed recently. Some speakers are connected to the turntable by wires, while others are wirelessly connected over Bluetooth. If it's a wired speaker, you'll need to match the right type of wire to your turntable output and speaker input, according to Record Head.
