This enormous 262-foot 'hybrid' superyacht will have an onboard spa and whiskey lounge

Gill Shmid Yacht 2

Gill Schmid Design, a New York-based design practice, has unveiled the details for a new 80 meter, about 262 feet, hybrid concept superyacht that includes an on-board garage, salon, and whiskey and cigar lounge.

The boat is called a "hybrid" because it is a cross "between a highly functional Explorer and a super luxurious white boat," meaning it is both plush and capable of sailing the wide world, reads a prepared statement by Gill Schmid.

It was also designed to be "chameleon-like" with its mirrored glazing, reflecting the surrounding environment as its sailing. This glazing allows the yacht to "sometimes [represent itself] as an aggressive workboat, and other times the luxurious lines of a superyacht, appearing and disappearing into her surrounds," according to the press release.

Keep scrolling to see the hybrid yacht with all of its luxurious amenities:

The boat has a two-tone finish of industrial silver and pearlescent white. The silver indicates operational areas, while the white denotes parts of the yacht for guest and entertainment spaces.

It includes a fully enclosed tender garage which can also double as a party space.

The garage can completely open up, turning the rear section of the yacht into a three-level entertainment area.

It’s near the lounges, bars, and library spaces.

For colder weather, there are sheltered spaces that have LED panels in the ceiling, allowing for a “simulated roofscape and virtual immersive experiences.”

The yacht also includes a gym, spa and beauty space, and an outdoor Jacuzzi.

It can also store a 39-foot limousine tender, four jet skis, and two Triton submarines, which can all be launched from the yacht.

The owner master suite has its own private outdoor deck.

There are six guest suites...

...and enough room to accommodate a crew of 25 people.

Other entertainment spaces include a whiskey lounge, cigar lounge, and a formal dining area.

The hull is ice-classed, allowing it to navigate through sea ice and frozen terrains.

The boat will be built by German-based Dörries Yachts.

The price of the superyacht has not yet been announced.

The best women's work bags you can buy

  • Work bags often pull double duty — they need to be cute and useful with great organization and enough space to hold all the things you need during the day.
  • Our top pick is the Dagne Dover Classic Tote because it moves seamlessly between roles thanks to a sleek coated canvas exterior and compartment-filled interior.

No matter how hard I try, I always seem to become the person who carries three bags to work. I've just never found one bag that does it all — holds my laptop, commuter book, and personal items while looking cute enough not to ruin my outfit. As a result, I usually pack a "normal" bag that matches my look and a canvas tote bag for additional functionality.

It's not the best method for my street style photo opportunities or for my spinal alignment. I've always been jealous of those women I see on the subway carrying a single chic satchel or sporty-cool backpack. But thanks to a recent uptick of brands specializing in affordable leather goods and sharp staples, the options for stylish work bags are getting better all the time.

Brands like Dagne Dover, Senreve, and Everlane are changing the game and making it easier than ever to find everyday bags that look good and hold a lot of stuff. Say goodbye to your canvas tote collection with these five working woman-approved carryalls.

Here are the best work bags for women:

Updated on 10/18/19 by Caitlin Petreycik. Updated prices, links, and formatting.

The best work bag overall

The Dagne Dover Classic Tote packs a ton of features in a slim, compact space so you can carry your entire life in the bag and no one will be the wiser.

Most tote bags, even if they are large enough to get you through a work day, tend to swallow half your stuff. I have several huge bags, but they're all pretty unstructured, making it hard to find smaller items inside.

The Dagne Dover Classic Tote is designed to combat this exact problem.

This bag has so many specialized pockets that you get a clown car effect when you look inside. The Classic Tote has a neoprene water bottle sleeve, a phone pocket, pen holder, padded laptop sleeve, notebook or tablet sleeve with magnetic closure, and interior side pocket. There's also a detachable key holder to prevent the tote from eating your key ring while you're trying to unlock the front door.

The Classic Tote has a durable coated canvas exterior with leather trim and comes in six very classic shades that will go with everything in your wardrobe. It truly is the ideal grab-and-go bag for everyday use.

Dagne Dover's praises have been sung all over the internet, and this bag and its larger counterpart, the Legend Tote, come recommended by Harper's Bazaar, The Strategist, Best Products, and our Insider Picks editor Ellen Hoffman. We also love the brand's leather Allyn Tote, though it costs more.

Pros: Beautiful design, tons of interior pockets formatted for different uses, detachable key chain, comes in six versatile colors, good value for the price

Cons:  None

The best work bag for less than $200

Looking to make less of an investment? The Everlane Day Market Tote is a premium quality leather work bag with a sub-$200 price tag that won't hurt your wallet.

A handbag doesn't have to be exciting to be special. In fact, I think the best work bags are simple enough to go with any outfit. The Everlane Day Market Tote is the kind of bag you can leave packed Monday through Friday‚ and maybe even Saturday and Sunday, too — without a second thought about whether it will clash with your ensemble.

The simple, no-fuss silhouette lends itself to daily use, and the sturdy 100% Italian leather exterior will look great for years to come. While the Day Market Tote lacks the jigsaw puzzle of pockets you get with Dagne Dover's Classic Tote, you can certainly still pack everything you need for a full day of activity — including a laptop — in this bag with room to spare.

This bag is a major hit with shoppers. It has well over 1,000 reviews and a 4.7-star rating on Everlane's website. Best Products, Harper's Bazaar, The Strategist, and The Cut have all featured the Day Market Tote. Our Insider Picks team loves it, too.

As far as downsides go, there aren't many, especially for the price. But keep in mind that the bag is unlined, doesn't have a closure, and only features one small pocket inside.

Pros: Affordable, 100% Italian leather, roomy size

Cons: Only one interior pocket

The best convertible work bag

Can't decide between a backpack, tote, satchel, or crossbody? The Senreve Maestra Bag is all of the above in a gorgeous and functional package.

If you're really serious about investing in The Ultimate Work Bag — a bag that can be everything at once, forever — consider the Senreve Maestra. Yes, that bag. The one that every blogger and their mom seems to be wearing on Instagram.

The Senreve Maestra stands out in part because it's just plain cool. It has an angular silhouette with a belt-style detail down the front and geometric seams in the leather. Despite its fashion-forward design, the Maestra is timeless. It's not going to look dated in a year or two, which is great news because it is by far the priciest option on this list.

But functionality is the real selling point here. The Maestra is designed to withstand the wear-and-tear of daily use with stain- and water-resistant leather. It comes in three sizes, and the largest one has a whopping seven interior pockets, as well as an exterior pocket on the outside. And, yes, you can fit your laptop inside.

Perhaps the coolest thing about this bag is that it converts into four different styles, so you no longer need to choose between a backpack, crossbody, satchel, or tote.

Insider Picks editor Sally Kaplan couldn't say enough good things about the Senreve Maestra in her review, and she's not the only one — writers as Purse Blog, Olivia Janette, Man Repeller, and Travel + Leisure say it's worth the price, too.

Pros: Comes in three sizes, convertible straps, up to eight pockets

Cons: Expensive

The best day-to-night work bag

Leatherology is known for affordable yet beautiful leather goods that fit all your life needs, and the Belmont Structured Tote comes with a wristlet, making it the perfect day-to-night option.

The concept of "day-to-night" dressing is a little bit overstated, I think, considering when I worked in an office I usually just wore the exact same outfit — accessories included — to my any after-hours activities. But in the event that you really need to ditch the heavy tote for your post-5 p.m. plans, there's always the wristlet-in-your-bag option.

Leatherology's Belmont Structured Tote is a roomy work-friendly bag with plenty of storage space (though limited pockets). It also comes with a detachable wristlet large enough to hold your phone, cash, and keys for a quick getaway. The perfect two-in-one!

The Belmont tote is available in several neutral colors with contrasting interior leather for added stylistic interest (accompanying wristlets coordinate with the exterior shade). Made of scratch- and water-resistant Italian leather, the bags are easily cleaned.

Insider Picks reporter Mara Leighton has spoken highly of Leatherology, and the company has also received the praises of Forbes and Fast Company.

Pros: Quality durable leather at an affordable price, customizable, spacious, comes with match wristlet

Cons: Only one small zippered pocket

Alaska is known for its fresh, sustainably harvested seafood — now you can enjoy it wherever you are through a monthly subscription

wild alaskan company

  • The Wild Alaskan Company is a wild-caught, sustainable seafood delivery service founded by a member of a third-generation Alaskan fishing family.
  • Its mission is to make trustworthy, sustainable fish (salmon, halibut, cod, and more) convenient to access.
  • It operates on a monthly membership model, in which you can get 12 pieces of fish for $132/month or 24 pieces of fish for $240/month.

While other kids grew up playing soccer or riding bikes in their backyard, Arron Kallenberg was raised on his family's commercial fishing boat in Bristol Bay, Alaska, home to the largest sockeye salmon fishery in the world

After spending 15 years working at internet startups, Kallenberg returned to these fishing roots, incorporating his knowledge of technology to create subscription service Wild Alaskan Company.

Wild Alaskan Company delivers wild-caught, sustainable seafood from Alaska and the Pacific Northwest to everywhere in the US except Hawaii.

If you've ever visited Alaska or Washington, you probably didn't leave without trying the state's abundance of delicious seafood options. And not only is it tasty, but it's also better for the environment. Alaska even mandates directly in its constitution that fish must be maintained on the sustained yield principle, which prevents the long-term depletion of a natural resource.

By signing up for Wild Alaskan Company, you'll receive sustainable seafood that you can trust. Here's how it works and what to expect.

All year long, the company offers sockeye salmon, coho salmon, Alaskan halibut, and Pacific cod. Depending on availability, it also offers rockfish, wild Alaska pollock, sablefish, and weathervane scallops.

You can't get these types a la carte (at least not yet). Instead, they're bundled together into various plans: the Wild Salmon Box (6-ounce portions of salmon), Wild White Fish Box (6-ounce portions of white fish), and Wild Combo Box (6-ounce portions of both types).

You have the choice between 12 single portions ($10.99 each) or 24 single portions ($9.99 each), to be delivered every month or every two months. These per-portion prices include shipping.

wild alaskan company 2

The fish arrives frozen in a dry ice-packed, insulated cooler, ready to be stashed in your freezer or cooked immediately.

Wild Alaskan Company sent me its Wild Combo Box to check out. I love eating fish but don't buy it often when I go grocery shopping because of either lack of availability at my local market, or confusion about the fish's background and sourcing. Knowing that the service sources from sustainably managed fisheries and was created by people who care about the wellbeing of natural food systems, I could spend more time and energy simply enjoying the fish.

wild alaskan company 4

The fish isn't "fresh" in the traditional sense that it's sent to you shortly after being caught. Rather, it's "fresh-frozen," which means it's frozen shortly after it's caught and handled. Despite the distinction, your fish should still taste great. In my experience, there weren't any drawbacks in the cooking process or taste.

The monthly membership design is meant to ensure you'll always have a flaky piece of salmon or halibut ready to cook for dinner. However, if at any point you want to pause or cancel your membership, you can email the company.

The bottom line

As we've already seen with the online meat boom, there's a greater urgency to think more consciously and carefully about where your food comes from and its effects on the planet. Wild Alaskan Company is the direct-to-consumer equivalent in the fish and seafood industry, so whether you already love eating seafood or wish you had more guidance picking out the right types, it's a service you should try.

I spend a lot of time working with my hands outdoors — this healing balm brings my dry and weathered skin back to life

sallyander

  • I spend a good portion of my free time out in the elements. From fishing and hunting to camping and cooking, my skin, and especially my hands, take a thrashing.
  • I use SallyeAnder Rescue Me balm ($19.99) for anything shy of wounds that require hospital visits (which are every bit as frequent as you might expect), and I've yet to witness it not work wonders on my skin.
  • It's loaded with natural ingredients like soy, cocoa, and olive oil, as well as wheat germ, and essential oils from rosemary, spearmint, eucalyptus, tea tree, and more.

Day in and day out, I put my hands through hell and back. Chopping wood, building fires, and hunting leviathans. Just kidding, my workweek is spent just like you, chained to a desk just like yours. But on the weekends, I do manage to live out my Hemmingway- and London-esque fantasies of wrangling sea creatures and building fires, and come Monday my hands are always a little worse for wear.

That's why I keep SallyeAnder's Rescue Me intensive care balm on my office desk, which I use to heal everything from chapped lips to dry hands, as well as all kinds of burns, scrapes, sores, and more. It's my be-all, end-all, cure-all for all the wraths my body incurs over the course of a weekend aquatic.

Ingredients

There's a long list of ingredients, but this stuff is, by and large, hypoallergenic. Though not listed on Amazon, the ingredients are right on the tin, in order as follows: soy, cocoa, olive, shea, and castor oils, beeswax, rosehip, Centella Asiatica, wheat germ, frankincense, Canadian balsam, cistus absolute, rosemary, spearmint, rose geranium, eucalyptus, white camphor, thyme, tea tree, vetiver, clove, and benjamin essential oils.

Effectively, what you get is an anti-inflammatory (frankincense, eucalyptus, thyme), anti-fungal (clove, geranium, eucalyptus), anti-bacterial (tea tree, geranium, eucalyptus) salve that works on everything from arthritis and scrapes to eczema and cold sores.

What it's like to use

sallyander1

What hits on the nose most is probably a combination of the clove, spearmint, and cocoa. What I like about it is that, while there is spearmint in it, it's as effective but not as effusive as something like Tiger Balm, which makes my eyes well up each and every time I put it on. It also smells like my grandmother (whom I loved, but good grief).

I use this stuff on everything, though, and it is just like Tiger Balm without the smell or the tingly menthol sensation. As temperatures drop and arthritic dampness grips me, my joints, and my soul, this stuff takes the edge off without making me feel like my body's on fire. Okay, that's enough ragging on Tiger Balm. You get it.

Let's just say that after a weekend spent fishing and hunting, my hands, lips, and sundry scrapes and burns are healed up just in time to go do it all over again on Friday night.

The bottom line

Sure, you could go buy all of these essential oils (or even some of them) and get basically the same thing, but will you? Further, it's only about 20 bucks for two ounces; what's your time worth? A tin of this stuff is a very handy thing to have around, especially during the winter months.

Pros: Not as intense on the nose as Tiger Balm, but just as (if not more) effective

Cons: None to speak of, other than maybe the price

The best tree skirts you can buy

  • Tree skirts add a dash of color and style to your holiday decor while hiding that unsightly tree stand. To help you find the best tree skirt, we rounded up the best options for small and large trees and more.
  • The Primode Holiday Images 50-Inch Tree Skirt is our top pick because it features classic Christmas colors and motifs, plus it's durable enough to last a lifetime.
  • For more holiday decorating ideas, check out the best artificial Christmas trees you can buy.

The winter holidays really are the most wonderful time of the year. When else can you justify eating dozens of cookies, opening second and third bottles of wine, stringing lights around the roof of your house, and putting an 8-foot tree in the center of your living room? And in any home where a Christmas tree will be set up during the holidays, it's as essential to have a great tree skirt underneath the tree as it is to have a shining star up on the top.

Tree skirts are important for three primary reasons, which will be of differing levels of value to different people and which I'll discuss in no particular order. A tree skirt can help keep your home clean by catching the needles that fall from a genuine pine tree, and which will invariably end up spread all around the house if not properly caught and collected. A tree skirt's ability to keep the room/home cleaner is its primary purpose for many households. (Note that even artificial trees shed some, so from a cleanliness perspective, a tree skirt is a good idea even with a fake tree.)

Tree skirts also help to keep pets and kids away from the tree stand. This is all the more important with a real tree that has a water-filled stand. Skirts help prevent messes or damage to wood flooring or carpets caused by spilled water and also help reduce the risk of electric shock. Finally, as noted above, tree skirts are a lovely addition to any holiday room, anchoring the decorative tableau (and, ideally, laden with presents).

Choosing the right tree skirt should be a pretty simple affair. First, measure the space the skirt will occupy to determine the maximum size the area can accommodate. Next, think about how large a tree you are going to get (or already have) and then look for skirts with a diameter of approximately the same size as the tree's widest span. When in doubt, opt for a skirt that's slightly smaller than the tree's width, not larger.

Finally, just pick a tree skirt you love based on how it looks and how it will look in the room. If you decorate lavishly, go ahead and choose an intricately patterned and colorful skirt. If your home holiday decor is more reserved, consider a solid-colored skirt or one with minimal flourishes.

Here are the best tree skirts you can buy:

Updated on 11/02/2018 by Steven John: Added a light-up tree skirt and updated pricing and formatting.

Updated on 10/18/2019 by Lisa Sabatini: Updated links, prices, and formatting. Replaced the best affordable tree skirt with new pick and removed out-of-stock light-up tree skirt.

The best tree skirt overall

The Primode Holiday Images 50-Inch Tree Skirt is big enough for trees up to 8 or 9 feet tall, and its red, green, and white wintry motifs make it look festive.

When my wife and I got our first Christmas tree a dozen or so years back, we also got just about the cheapest tree skirt known to history. It bunched up easily, it shed more fibers than the tree dropped needles, and it really just looked ... cheap. Still, we kept the damn thing for five or six years because it just seemed like such a hassle to replace it. Don't make that same mistake.

Instead, consider getting the Primode Holiday Images 50-Inch Tree Skirt. With it, your home may well be set for life — as far as Christmas tree skirts go, anyway.

At 50 inches across, this skirt is large enough for most trees yet it will still fit in most rooms. You can always fold a portion of your tree skirt to make it fit closer to a wall or into a corner. Its bright red background is warm and merry, while the green trees and white snowflakes stitched into the skirt add colorful cheer.

The skirt features a 5-inch center opening that should accommodate almost any trunk while still concealing the stand entirely. A pair of ties keep the skirt closed, and its weight and the quality of the fabric help it to lie flat without bunching or wrinkling.

This Primode tree skirt scores a four out of five stars when you average all of its ratings together. One customer says the skirt is "the perfect shade of red" for holiday decor, while another gushes: "The tree skirt is beautiful! I'm in love!"

An editor with BoomsBeat gave Primode tree skirts an impressive 9.1 out of 10 rating based on their quality. Primode skirts are also highly popular on Pinterest boards.

Pros: Lovely Christmas colors and designs, durable cotton/polyester blend, ideal size for most homes

Cons: Chemical odor when new requires time/and or washing to dispel

The best traditional tree skirt

The Valery Madelyn 48-inch Tree Skirt will look right at home in homes with a traditional style.

Some of the online product copy written about the Valery Madelyn 48-inch Tree Skirt refers to its look as a "classic baroque style." At first, I thought that description was a bit overwrought, but on closer consideration, I think they're spot on. The skirt looks rather demure from a distance, with a deep burgundy background and gray-gold ruffle that rather blend in with the greater tableau of a space, but seen up close, the surface is adorned with intricate swirling golden stitching and punctuated by silver sequins.

This tree skirt manages to be both regal and refined while still having just a touch of playful flash. In fact, the darker the room, the more the skirt will stand out, as Christmas light and/or a crackling fire make its gold and silver highlights sparkle.

At 48 inches in diameter, the Valery Madelyn Luxury Collection Gold and Burgundy Tree Skirt is large enough for most trees you're likely to install in the home or at a business. And with its quality fabrication and a set of Velcro straps holding it securely closed along the slit, the skirt is suitable for use in high traffic areas.

The Valery Madelyn Luxury Collection Gold and Burgundy Tree Skirt has a shining 4.7-star average rating on Amazon. A customer named Jessica T. said that it's the "most beautiful tree skirt [she has] ever seen," adding that it's "even more beautiful in person."

This skirt is a top seller from retailers all over the internet as well as with brick-and-mortar stores thanks to the confluence of elegant looks and a fair price.

Pros: Lovely subtle styling, plush velvet material, durable Velcro tabs

Cons: Will not match some interior design schemes

The best mini tree skirt

The charming VHC Brands Red Burlap Mini Tree Skirt is perfect for a tiny tree kept in the corner of an apartment or in a Christmas-obsessed kid's bedroom.

The VHC Brands Burlap Mini Tree Skirt is big on charm and small on dimensions. The cloth skirt measures just 21 inches across, making it a perfect fit for a diminutive tree standing 3 or 4 feet tall. The company makes these mini skirts in a number of colors and patterns if you don't like the basic beige pictured above.

Whether you place a tiny artificial tree in the center of your holiday dinner table or you simply have a rather small tree as your primary Christmas tree, this skirt will be the perfect grace note to that pint-sized holiday pine.

The skirt is made from 100% cotton and can be machine-washed if needed (use cold water and a gentle cycle) and is durable enough to last for many years. It has four concentric rings gathered into handsome pleats and edged with fringe and adds depth to any space in which the skirt is displayed. Even used without an actual tree, this skirt makes a handsome decoration placed beneath a vase filled with flowers or under a platter laden with fine foods.

Also, as befitting a tree skirt that's less than half the size of most other options, its price tag is quite small.

The VHC Brands Burlap Mini Tree Skirt has a 4.1-star average rating as of the time of this writing. One customer calls it a "darling little tree skirt" that looks perfect atop her "hand-scraped hardwood floors," while another said it was the "perfect fit for a small table tree."

Pros: Bright color and handsome ruffles, perfect for small trees, affordable price point

Cons: Too small for most trees

The best affordable tree skirt

The Ivenf Christmas Tree Skirt measures 48-inches in diameter and has a simple but appealing geometric scallop trim.

Measuring 48 inches in diameter, the Ivenf Christmas Tree Skirt is a great midsize tree skirt that should work with most trees standing anywhere from 6 to 8 feet tall. That means it's a skirt you can enjoy year after year, even if your Christmas trees tend to vary in height from one holiday to the next.

The tree skirt is made of rich burgundy-colored polyester that has the look of burlap and features a ring of overlapping scallop trim. It looks great beneath a dark green pine tree and complements wood floors, neutral-colored carpeting, and tile.

If you're looking for a super affordable tree skirt that is actually large enough for trees of standard height, this is it. Don't worry, though, this skirt is only cheap in price. It's actually surprisingly well-made with two layers of fabric and a Velcro-closure.

On Amazon, the Ivenf Christmas Tree Skirt has a 4.9-star rating overall. Even better, the company guarantees a replacement or full refund if you're not satisfied. —Lisa Sabatini

Pros: Great low price; simple but elegant design; good midrange size; full refund offered if not satisfied

Cons: May clash with carpeting that is warm in color

The best large tree skirt

The Kurt Adler Embroidered and Pleated 60-Inch Tree Skirt is almost a full foot larger in diameter than the next biggest one on our list, so it's perfect for a tall tree.

If you've got a big tree, you gotta get a big tree skirt. As a general rule of thumb, a Christmas tree should be at least 6 inches shorter than the ceiling of the room in which it will reside. Or shorter still if a star, angel, or other decorative crown will top it. So a room with an 8-foot ceiling should have a 7- or 7.5-foot tree, a room with 9-foot ceilings can accommodate an eight to eight and a half-foot tree, and so on.

As trees get taller, keep in mind that they also get wider. The average width of a Christmas tree standing 8 feet tall is just under 5 feet wide, so if you will get a tree that tall or taller, you will need quite a large tree skirt to catch its falling needles and simply to look proportionate.

At 5 feet across, the Kurt Adler Embroidered and Pleated Tree Skirt is up to the task of serving those bigger, wider trees. It is made of polyester and has a deep red color punctuated by snowflake designs in varied sizes. The narrow pleated trim caps off an elegantly simple design that looks lovely on all sorts of flooring.

While this is by far the most expensive tree skirt on our list, it's to be expected that the price rises as the size increases. Also remember that the best thing about a big, wide tree and a large tree skirt is the fact that it provides more room for presents.

A customer named Lauren praises this tree skirt's "very high-quality material" and the "linen-like look" of the material. An owner named Carole called it "well made" and a great size and said she looked forward to the skirt adorning her "Christmas tree for years to come."

Pros: Great size for large trees, crisp and attractive design, durable construction

Cons: Rather expensive, no ties or tabs to secure slit

  • Kim Jong Un's younger sister and right-hand woman, Kim Yo Jong, is a mysterious figure whose life has piqued international curiosity.
  • The 30-something woman was seen in her brother's bizarre photoshoot riding a white horse on a historically meaningful mountain.
  • She has rapidly become North Korea's most powerful woman, frequently seen side by side with her brother, and plays a key role in his administration.

As North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has sought to raise his international standing, a figure seen by his side almost constantly during his meetings with world leaders is none other than his younger sister Kim Yo Jong.

During the two summits between the US and North Korea, Kim Yo Jong was front and center during the historic show of diplomacy between Kim Jong Un and President Donald Trump.

She also traveled to South Korea during the 2018 Winter Olympics, becoming the first member of North Korea's ruling family to visit the south since the Korean War in the 1950s.

Most recently, she was seen in a bizarre photoshoot her brother staged on a North Korean mountainside, riding a white horse through the snow.

Some had speculated that Kim Yo Jong was kicked out of North Korea's high-profile ruling politburo, NK News reported in April, suggesting a fall from favor. But her participation in the strange photoshoot suggests she may be back in the leader's good graces.

Like her brother, and much of the rest of their family, few details are known about Kim Yo Jong and the life she lived before reaching a prime leadership role in the North Korean government.

Here's what we know about her so far.

Some have speculated that she was promoted partly in an effort to continue Kim Jong Un's dynasty. While she's out of the line of succession, some believe she could take over the country's leadership if something happens to Kim Jong Un before his kids are old enough to rule.

It wouldn't be an unprecedented role for her, either. Kim Yo Jong once briefly took control of the country's affairs while her brother was ill in 2014, according to a South Korean think tank run by North Korean defectors.

She stepped onto the world stage in February 2018. In a rare show of diplomacy between the two Koreas, Kim Yo Jong traveled to South Korea for the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

In April 2018, she played a crucial role in the peace talks between the two Koreas. Leaders from the two nations met at the Demilitarized Zone, and Kim Yo Jong was notably the only woman at the table.

Though she stayed well away from the spotlight, leaving that to her brother, it was clear Kim Yo Jong played a significant role in orchestrating the talks and ensuring the day ran smoothly.

It has become increasingly clear over the past year that Kim Yo Jong was one of her brother's most trusted officials, and her power in the regime was only growing.

But in the hermit kingdom, no one's position is ever truly secure under the mercurial leadership of Kim Jong Un. He's known for turning on family members quickly when they fall out of favor — and it remains to be seen whether Kim Yo Jong is an exception.

Kim Yo Jong was not listed as an alternate member of North Korea's ruling Workers' Party of Korea politburo — the party's top decision-making body — and did not appear at any high-profile events during an important party gathering in April.

One theory is that Kim Jong Un ordered her to lie low after his failed summit with Trump in February.

But in early June, Kim Yo Jong was spotted for the first time in 52 days, suggesting she was back in her brother's good graces.

This week, North Korean media released strange photos of Kim Jong Un riding a white horse atop a mountain with historic and symbolic significance. Experts told Business Insider's Ellen Ioanes that the photos are packed with political meaning — and could foreshadow a frightening military advancement.

Source: Business Insider

The photos are highly meaningful — for one, they take place on Paektu Mountain, the supposed "location of Kim Il Sung's mythical guerrilla base," according to experts. Kim Jong Un has previously visited the mountainside before major policy or military announcements.

North Korea may soon take action like launching a rocket or announcing that they have the ability to perform subcritical nuclear tests, according to Michael Madden, a North Korea researcher for the Stimson Center.

Either way, the fact that Kim Yo Jong is involved in such a meaningful display speaks volumes about her status in the hermit kingdom.

The best LED string lights you can buy

  • LED string lights aren't just for holiday decorations anymore. They can liven up your decor any time of the year.
  • When deciding on which LED string lights to buy, it's important to consider longevity, cost, durability, and design appeal, among other factors.
  • The LED string lights from GE are our top pick because they are long-lasting, energy-safe, and stylish. They're also available in a variety of lengths and colors.
  • For more of the best string lights, see our guide to the best holiday lights you can buy.

A strand of classic white string lights can upgrade just about any space, be it your dorm room or backyard gazebo. All you need is a working outlet or pack of batteries in order to light up the dark corners of your home.

In addition to giving off that good old nostalgic glow, LED string lights are longer-lasting, safer, and more eco-friendly than classic incandescent string lights. It's true LED string lights are usually a bit more expensive upfront, but since they last for thousands of hours and use very little energy, they are a more cost-effective option overall.

Whether you're looking for classic white, holiday colors, indoor, outdoor, solar, or vintage bistro lights, we have a pick for you. We took longevity, cost, sturdiness, design appeal, and other features into consideration to come up with a guide to the best LED string lights on the market.

Here are the best LED string lights you can buy:

Updated on 10/18/2019 by Lisa Sabatini: Updated formatting and prices.

The best LED string lights overall

These LED string lights from GE produce an old-fashioned glow without consuming a ton of energy.

General Electric has been around for more than 125 years, and the company is still leading the electric lighting game in many ways. These LED string lights are energy efficient and should last up to 10 years. They also produce less heat than traditional bulbs, so there's far less of a fire concern.

GE's Colorite LED string lights come in strands with 50 or 100 bulbs, in colors, and in classic white. Reviewers have plenty to say about their warm glow. Some LED lights can look too white or even a bit blue, instead of that warm, almost golden glow you get with traditional incandescents. However, that's not the case here. As one reviewer wrote on Amazon, "They aren't stark white, and they aren't weirdly yellow."

Expert reviewers also love these lights. The GE LED string lights have made it onto Wirecutter's best-of list for five years in a row, making them a tried and true choice for string lights.

The bulbs come only in a mini-size, but don't let that deter you from trying them, even if you want to replicate the traditional string light look, because less is more in the world of LED lights. This version of string lights only comes on a green wire, which might be undesirable if you want to use them on a white wall. However, the green wire is obviously great for using with trees.

These lights are labeled for both indoor and outdoor use, but a few reviewers on Amazon mentioned that the lights died sooner than expected when used outside.

Pros: Long-lasting, energy-smart lights with an old-fashioned glow

Cons: Better for inside rather than outside, comes on green string

The best outdoor LED string lights

These Edison LED Outdoor String Lights provide vintage ambiance while being energy-efficient and sturdy.

These classy Edison bulbs may look like they're from the 19th century, but their efficiency is very modern indeed. You can bask under the glow of these stylish bistro lights for up to 10 years, all while saving on your power bill.

Reviewers on Amazon mention that these lights really have that antique warm-white light that you want from bistro lights, and not the harsh light some people associate with older LED lights.

These Fule string lights are meant for use outside, so you don't need to worry about exposure to the elements since they're waterproof. Plus, the bulbs are made out of plastic, not glass, so they look vintage, but won't shatter if something happens to them. If for some reason, they do stop working, the lights come with a 24-month warranty.

While more than 80% of reviewers on Amazon gave these Fule string lights five-out-of-five stars, some did mention that not all lights worked immediately out of the box. A few buyers had to unplug the string and tighten the socket-to-bulb connection by hand, which fixed the issue. However, the vast majority of reviewers still love the results and rate these lovely ambiance boosting lights highly.

Pros: Vintage glow with long-lasting, energy-smart quality

Cons: Pricey, but will help you save on energy costs over time

The best indoor LED string lights

Koopower's LED lights turn on and off with the press of a button and they can be programmed, so you never have to unplug your lights again.

I love these delicate, warm lights from Koopower, because they're so adjustable and come with tons of features that you won't always see with traditional incandescent lights.

A programmable timer means you don't have to worry about turning your lights off before you go to bed or plugging them back in the next day. If you want the lights to turn on right when it gets dark, all you have to do is set it and forget it.

Because the lights come with a remote control, you don't need to crouch down and crawl behind your tree or climb on a ladder up to your rafters when you want to change the lights' settings.

Around 87% of Amazon reviewers give these Koopower lights a four or five-star rating. Buyers love that these lights are dimmable, so you can adjust for a bright white or gentle yellow glow. The lights also use a low-voltage plug for safety and have eight different settings: The lights can stay steadily on, blink, fade, wave, flash, twinkle, and more.

One of the only drawbacks to this set is that you need the remote control to turn them on and off. If you lose it, the only way to turn them off is to unplug them.

Pros: Adjustable, remote-control, and low-voltage lights give users tons of energy-smart options

Cons: They're only operable via the remote control

The best outlet-free LED string lights

Amir Solar Powered String Lights don't require batteries or an outlet, so you can use them anywhere.

Whether you're planning an outdoor wedding or want to put your holiday lights in a corner of your yard that's too far from an electrical outlet, the convenience of Amir's solar-powered LED string lights is nothing to blink at.

This 72-foot long copper wire strand of 360-degree mini-lights comes attached to a four-inch square solar panel you can stake into the ground. As long as your location gets a few hours of sunlight per day, that will be enough to power this entire strand and its 200 bulbs.

My house is more than 100 years old and doesn't have any power sockets outside, but I hate the look of ugly extension cords, so these solar lights are perfect for me. I've had this exact light strand set up outside in my yard for more than a year, and the lights are still working beautifully.

On particularly cloudy days, I've felt that the lights look a little dimmer than on days when the solar panel gets tons of sun, but they've never stopped working, even though they've been rained on more times than I can count.

I love the way the copper wire glows when the lights go on, plus they're super versatile. In the summer, I had them twined around a jasmine vine, where they looked romantic and enchanting in the garden. And for the holidays, I have them draped over my front fence like icicles.

Pros: Completely solar-powered lights that stand up to weather and work in many contexts

Cons: The small lights might be too dim if you don't get enough sun, tangle easily

The best budget LED string lights

The affordable Autolizer 100 LED Warm White Fairy String Lights are easy to set up, making them the perfect lights to decorate your home.

As a general rule, most LED string lights are more expensive than their incandescent counterparts. We can only hope this changes in the future to make LED lights more affordable for everyone. In the meantime, however, even budget shoppers can find solace in the relatively low cost of Autolizer's 100 LED Fairy String Lights.

These LED's have "fairy lights" in the name, but you should note they aren't the small, wiry ones you might normally associate with that term. They look very similar to traditional incandescent string lights.

At around eight bucks for a 32-foot strand with 100 LED lights, these are the most affordable lights in our list, though more than half of buyers on Amazon still rate them positively on quality and look. They are available on Amazon in 10 different colors, including a classic warm white option.

One major drawback with these lights is that you can't plug them in together end to end like you can with most string lights, so you really need to be sure of the actual length you need. The lights come in lengths ranging between 32 feet and 360 feet, so you can still get the coverage you need, but you have to know before you buy.

Pros: Lasting quality, budget-friendly

Cons: Can't plug in end to end

How to change the name of your Mac computer in 4 steps, so that it's easier to find on your local network and AirDrop

Macbook Air

  • You might want to change your Mac's name so that it's easier to find on your local network, which can be useful for things like AirDrop.
  • Changing your Mac's name can also make your computer feel more customized to your preferences.
  • The name you assign will also be your Mac computer's hostname for devices that use Apple's Bonjour networking technology.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Every Mac computer has a name. Your Mac's name can be important for transferring files, such as through AirDrop, or for finding it on your local network.

It's easy to add or change the name of your Mac using a few steps.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

MacBook Pro (From $1,299.99 at Best Buy)

Why should you change the name of your Mac?

There are several reasons why you might want to change the name of your Mac. If your computer is a hand-me-down, it might have the name of the previous owner on it and you probably want to change it to your name.

If your Mac has a non-descriptive name such as "computer" or no name at all, it may be hard to find it when you want to send or share files.

If you have more than one computer, each should have a name that clearly identifies it so that you can tell them apart. You might do this by naming them for the model, such as "MacBook Air," "iMac," etc.

You might want to add your name, to differentiate your computer from others in your home that belong to other users. If multiple computers on your network have the same name, Apple will automatically add a number to the end of the name.

Best practice, however, is to give each Mac its own unique name.

How to change the name of your Mac

It's ridiculously easy to change the name of your Mac — once you know where to look, that is.

1. Click on the Apple icon on the upper left corner of your Mac screen. Select System Preferences from the dropdown menu.

How to change Mac name

2. In the System Preferences window, select the blue "Sharing" folder.

How to change Mac name

3. In the "Sharing" window, simply click into the text box next to "Computer Name" at the top and enter your new computer name.

How to change Mac name

4. Once you exit the Sharing window, your computer's hostname will automatically change to match your new computer name. The hostname is an address (your-Mac.local) that devices equipped with Apple's Bonjour networking software use to recognize and connect to your computer. You can manually edit your hostname by clicking the Edit button under the Computer Name field.

How to change Mac name

  • The hostname must contain only letters and dashes.
  • If you manually edit the hostname, it won't change when you change your computer name. However, you don't need to worry about this. Your printers and other devices should be able to communicate seamlessly with your Mac, even if you change its name several times.

The best mattresses

  • A high-quality mattress will last for more than a decade, provides the right balance of comfort and support for your body type and sleeping style, and offers superb motion transfer isolation.
  • Our guide features beds that performed well in our tests, have long trial periods, and are designed to suit a broad range of sleepers.
  • The Leesa Hybrid Mattress is our top pick because it sleeps cool, has impressive edge support, and features motion isolation so good that you won't notice when your partner gets up in the morning.

After your home and vehicle, one of the most important purchases you will make is your bed. After all, you spend a third of your life sleeping. It's a tired, old cliché, but it's true. And, if you don't put enough research and money into finding the best mattress for your needs, that third of your life you spend sleeping could end up having a negative impact on the two thirds you're awake.

One of the biggest mistakes mattress shoppers make is putting too much emphasis on the price tag. Most mattresses have warranties of at least 10 years. Even if you splurge on a $2,000 bed, that works out to about 50 cents per day over the life of the warranty. I think most of us would agree that your comfort is worth that. If money is tight, check out the financing options offered by most online mattress sellers.

Instead of focusing on the price, you should pay attention to the most powerful tool for finding the right mattress for you: the risk-free trial period. We can tell you all about what to look for when mattress shopping, but the best way to tell if a bed is right for you is to sleep on it for several nights. Fortunately, the best brands offer trial periods of 100 nights or more. Most will give you a full refund if you decide the mattress isn't right for you.

How we test mattresses

I've personally tested more than a dozen brands, and with the help of my Insider Picks colleagues, we've tested all of the top online mattresses. Each bed I receive goes through a battery of tests, and for the mattresses I haven't tested, I've extrapolated the key performance indicators based on our team's reviews along with expert testing from sites like Sleepopolis and Consumer Reports.

Here are the main attributes we look for and how we test them:

Firmness: For many buyers, this is a key consideration. Yet, there isn't really a standard way to measure firmness. A mattress maker's firmness claims are often hit or miss. I prefer an average firmness, and the main bed that I sleep on has an average rating based on my experience and expert ratings. Any new mattress that comes in is compared to my main baseline mattress to determine its firmness level.

Sleeper type: Back, stomach, and side sleepers will all have different preferences. I'm a side sleeper, but I often sleep on my stomach on firmer mattresses. My wife is a back sleeper. Our subjective sleeping experiences on a particular bed will determine the type of sleeper that will benefit most from the mattress.

Sleep temperature: Most beds-in-a-box feature some type of memory foam, which tends to trap heat. This can lead to a night of tossing and turning. So, to determine heat dissipation, I first lay on the bed for at least an hour. Next, I get up for about five minutes leaving the bed uncovered. I then return to assess how warm it feels. I combine these results with my comfort temperature-wise while sleeping on the mattress to form an overall opinion of the heat dissipation properties.

Edge support: Edge support is important if you like sitting on the side of your bed when putting on shoes or if you sleep with someone who tends to take up a lot of bed space. To test edge support, I sit on the edge of the bed and gauge how much it sinks. I also lie on the side of the bed and slowly rotate closer to the edge until I fall off. I note how secure I feel on the edge and how far I can go without falling.

Motion transfer: If you share a bed with someone or have pets, you don't want their nocturnal movements to disturb your sleep. This is where motion transfer isolation is important. To assess this, I place a 12-ounce can of pop in the middle of the mattress. Next, I drop a 20-pound weight from approximately four feet above the bed so that it lands 12 inches from the pop can. I do this a few times. If the can falls over consistently, the motion isolation isn't very good. If it stays upright, we have a good motion dissipating mattress.

Moving the mattress: If you move often or want to rotate your mattress regularly to improve its longevity, it needs to be easily movable. I test movability by rotating the mattress a few times and taking it from one room to another. I pay close attention to how much effort it requires.

In addition to these tests, we look closely at a mattress's trial period, warranty, in-home delivery/white-glove service, and the type of foundation needed for best performance.

Along with testing out dozens of mattresses, we looked at countless expert and buyer ratings and reviews of the top brands while researching this guide. Our guide features mattresses that performed well in our tests, have long trial periods, and are designed to suit a broad range of sleepers. Also, all of the prices listed in our guide are for the queen. You can follow our links to find the prices for other mattress sizes.

Updated on 10/18/2019 by James Brains: Revamped guide to include all our current recommended products.

The best mattress overall

With its perfect balance of comfort and support for a broad range of sleeping styles and body types, the Leesa Hybrid Mattress is the best mattress I've slept on providing exceptional motion transfer isolation and edge support.

For about a year, the Leesa Hybrid Mattress, formerly known as the "Sapira," was the bed my wife and I slept on when I wasn't testing other models. My wife is tall and weight-proportional. She sleeps on her back. I'm six feet tall and weigh 250 pounds and sleep on my stomach and side. This mattress is the most comfortable of the countless varieties I've tested.

I usually overheat in bed, but the Leesa Hybrid keeps me cool at night by dissipating the heat. It's ideal for couples thanks to its outstanding edge support and superb performance in the motion transfer tests I put it through.

The firmness level of the Leesa Hybrid is right around average. The company recommends using a "firm, flat, and sturdy" foundation. I used the Leesa Foundation, which did the job but had several minor annoyances you can read about in my full review of the Leesa Hybrid.

The mattress is backed by a 10-year warranty, and Leesa offers a 100-night risk-free trial. You can also choose the white glove service for $150, which covers setting up your mattress and foundation and removing your old bed. Though the mattress is bulky and hard to move around, most individuals in good health should be able to set it up with the help of a friend.

Slumber Yard recommends the Leesa Hybrid for stomach and back sleepers who want a great combination of springs and soft memory foam feel. The reviewer was impressed with how well-made, comfortable, and supportive the bed is.

The Wirecutter also recommends this model because of the pressure relief afforded by the memory foam and the subtle bounce of the coils. The reviewer found the bed had excellent cooling abilities and worked for side, stomach, and back sleepers along with heavier people.

Pros: Works for a broad range of sleepers, excellent heat dissipation properties, extraordinary motion isolation, impressive edge support

Cons: Petite side sleepers may find the mattress is too firm

The best mattress for hot sleepers

If heat-trapping mattresses have kept you tossing and turning through the night, the Tempur-Pedic PRObreeze Mattress will help you rest easy.

The Tempur-Pedic PRObreeze Mattress is what my wife and I sleep on when we're not testing other brands. It's passed all of my motion transfer tests, and I don't even notice when my wife gets up before me in the morning. Though I've found it holds my body heat when I come back from using the bathroom at night, overall, the PRObreeze sleeps cooler than most mattresses.

The PRObreeze is 12 inches thick and features a cooling cover, Purecool+ phase change material, a Tempur CM+ comfort layer, and the original Tempur material support layer. It's also available as a hybrid, which is what I have. Tempur-Pedic offers a 90-night risk-free trial and 10-year warranty. Plus, you can try it out in hundreds of stores across the country.

Tempur-Pedic supplies free white glove delivery, which was incredibly helpful since our king mattress is a bit much for even two people to carry. We use the Tempur-Ergo Extend with Sleeptracker as the foundation, which is worth the investment if you like to watch TV or read in bed. And, if you are looking for an even cooler sleeping solution, consider the PRObreeze's sibling the LUXEbreeze, which is designed to be up to 5 degrees cooler.

Since it's so new, there are few expert reviews of the Tempur-Pedic PRObreeze Mattress. Slumber Yard recommends it for hot sleepers. The reviewer pointed out that it's essentially the same as the popular Tempur-ProAdapt. Yet, he does note that he likes the cooling upgrades that set it apart from the ProAdapt, especially the new cooling cover. The main downside the reviewer points out is that the mattress is only available in Medium and Medium Hybrid.

On Tempur-Pedic's website, one shopper who previously owned the Tempur Flex Supreme for five years decided to upgrade to this mattress because of its cooling abilities. He found the mattress lives up to the hype; he no longer has sweaty nights of tossing and turning. Other buyers are similarly zealous in their love of the PRObreeze, including several reviewers who claim it helped alleviate their chronic back pain.

Pros: Good cooling, impressive motion isolation, great for side sleepers and petite individuals, free white glove delivery

Cons: Expensive, questionable edge support, only available in medium firmness

The best all-foam mattress

The Casper mattress has a firm feel that provides excellent support right to the edge, and it will keep your body cool through the night.

Earlier this year, Casper updated its best-selling all-foam mattress with a zoned-support layer, which provides specialized pressure relief to targeted body parts. The slightly firmer than average support is ideal for back and stomach sleepers, but it was significantly less comfortable when I moved to my side. The firmness also rendered the bed less bouncy but made rotating the mattress and moving around on it easier.

The Casper passed my motion transfer test with flying colors. And, I found the edge support was also impressive. Plus, on hot summer nights, the breathable design kept my usually overheating body nice and cool. You can check out my full review here. I've also tested and recommended the Casper Hybrid mattress, which you can read about here.

Consumer Reports recommends the Casper Mattress as the "best buy" and best overall memory foam mattress. In the review site's tests, the mattress was excellent for petite side and back sleepers and very good for average and large individuals. After eight years of simulated use, the mattress only showed minor changes in performance. The only negative noted was the lack of grips, which could make moving the mattress difficult.

Sleepopolis and Sleep Advisor also recommend the Casper Mattress. And, The Wirecutter does as well but only if you are looking for a medium-firm foam mattress and "don't mind possibly overpaying for it.

Pros: Includes 100-day risk-free trial, has great edge support, has excellent motion transfer dampening, offers firm support, breathable open-cell foam top layer helps keep you cool

Cons: Has very little bounce, might be too firm for side sleepers

The best mattress for people with back pain

The Saatva Classic Mattress provides luxurious comfort with its plush top and is designed to suit an array of sleeping styles.

The Saatva Classic Mattress comes in six standard sizes, two thicknesses (11.5 inches and 14.5 inches), and three firmness levels: plush soft, luxury firm, and firm. Saatva also sells a frame, foundation, and adjustable base to go with your mattress.

The individually-wrapped coils offer impressive support to the bed's edge. Also, no matter your sleep style, there's sure to be a firmness level that caters to you. The bed is backed by a 15-year warranty and a 120-night trial, though if you decide to return the mattress, a $99 transportation fee is deducted from your refund.

Insider Picks' Kylie Joyner loved the "Goldilocks" feel of support and comfort of the Saatva Classic Mattress. She and her partner have enjoyed decreased back pain since sleeping on the luxury firm bed. And, she rested easy knowing the company uses environmentally-friendly materials to manufacture its mattress in the United States.

Sleep Advisor, Mattress Clarity, Sleepopolis, Tuck, and The Wirecutter all recommend the Saatva Classic. The Wirecutter ranks it as the best spring mattress. The reviewer liked that the pocket coils and plush top afforded a pleasant combination of bounce and softness. The delivery experience was convenient with the mattress coming fully expanded. Yet, since the Euro top is susceptible to body impressions, she warns against heavier individuals purchasing this model.

Though they were tired of the high-pressure in-person mattress shopping experience, several Saatva buyers were resistant to buying a mattress online at first. But, the high-quality feel of the materials won them over. Thanks to the comfort of his luxury firm mattress, one buyer noted that he looks forward to bedtime now. Another reviewer using a sleep-tracker app discovered that her sleep per night went from three or four hours to six or seven hours with the purchase of this bed.

Pros: Free in-home delivery and mattress removal, three firmness levels, plush softness, nice bounce, 120-night trial

Cons: Fees associated with returns, not the best for people weighing more than 200 pounds

The best natural mattress

Environmentally-conscious folks can choose the Birch Mattress without guilt thanks to its all-natural materials.

The Birch Mattress comes from Helix, which is known for offering a wide array of excellent mattresses, including the Helix Dusk and the Helix Luxe Dusk. The Birch is positioned as an earth-friendly alternative using organic cotton, wool, natural latex, and high-quality steel. The mattress comes with a 100-night sleep trial and a 25-year warranty.

I've tested the Birch Mattress with and without the optional $400 plush pillow top. Without the pillow top, the mattress has above-average firmness, which felt great when I slept on my stomach. With the top, sleeping on my side was much more comfortable. The bed passed my motion transfer tests and offered outstanding edge support. I also found it does a good — not great — job of dissipating heat.

Sleepopolis recommends the Birch Mattress because it has fantastic bounce and the firmness works well for stomach and back sleepers. The reviewer also appreciated that the mattress is made of all-natural elements and is Greenguard Gold certified. However, he doesn't think the mattress without the pillowtop is good for side sleepers. Sleep Sherpa recommends this model if you're looking for a mattress made of renewable materials, that doesn't contain foam, and is temperature neutral.

Buyers like that the mattress is made with natural, organic materials, which makes it so the bed doesn't have an off-putting odor when it comes out of the packaging. One person shared her story of dealing with hip pain. At first, the Birch mattress with the pillow top helped, but after about a month and a half, the pain came back. Birch worked with her to provide another layer of soft latex, which seemed to relieve the pressure points.

Pros: Greenguard Gold certified, made of natural materials, exceptional bounce, very good motion transfer isolation, above-average firmness, optional plush pillow top for a softer feel

Cons: Not ideal for side sleepers without the pillow top

The best ultra-firm mattress

If the idea of sleeping on the floor sounds more appealing than most beds, the Plank Mattress should give you the ultra-firmness you seek.

The Plank Mattress is made by Brooklyn Bedding, a mattress company that manufactures an array of top-rated beds and bedding.  The Plank is about as firm as it gets. The top side is just firm, while the bottom side is extra firm. So, you can flip the bed to achieve your optimal feel. You can also choose to add a cooling top layer to the extra firm side.

Insider Picks' Owen Burke tested the Plank. After having lived in Taiwan, it was the first truly-firm mattress he'd found in the Western Hemisphere. He preferred the ultra-firm side. You can read his full review here.

Tuck recommends the Plank Mattress to heavier stomach and back sleepers because it's so firm. In the review site's tests, the mattress was durable, provided good motion isolation and edge support, was quiet, had minimal off-gassing, and slept cooler than other all-foam models. The main negatives were that the 120-night sleep trial required a 30-night break-in period, and the mattress doesn't tend to conform to the contours of your body.

You really can't go wrong with a Brooklyn Bedding mattress. If ultra-firm isn't your thing, consider their Aurora mattress.

Pros: Great for heavier back and stomach sleepers, incredibly firm, great motion isolation, exceptional edge support, two levels of firmness

Cons: Not the best for petite individuals or side sleepers, doesn't contour to your body

How to pick the right mattress for you

There are a ton of things to consider when buying a mattress, including firmness, materials, warranties, return policies, and whether to go with a direct-to-consumer mattress startup or a big-name brand. We break it down for you below:

Finding the right level of firmness

Before you buy, you'll want to know what level of firmness is best for you. Side sleepers tend to like medium-to-soft mattresses, while back and stomach sleepers prefer firmer mattresses.

While your first reaction might be to get the plushest mattress out there, the fact is that sometimes ultra-soft mattresses can be bad for your back. On top of that, if you're half of a couple, you'll need to take into consideration what your partner wants, too. If you've got a big budget, you can go with a high-end mattress that allows for adjustments to be made on each side of the mattress.

Look for a good return policy or a long trial period in case the mattress you thought you wanted doesn't work out for you. Mattress choice is deeply personal and varies widely from person to person.

What kind of mattress do you want?

There are a lot of different mattress types, but Sleepopolis breaks them down extremely well. We've summarized each type of mattress below based on the site's expert mattress buying guide

  • Hybrid mattresses combine memory foam and latex with spring coils and other materials to appeal to a wide range of sleepers. These mattresses are great all-around options for couples.
  • Latex foam mattresses are best known for being cooling, bouncy, and responsive.
  • Memory Foam mattresses conform to your body's needs and offer excellent support. They're huggier than other mattresses, so they may not appeal to hot sleepers.
  • Coil mattresses are more old-fashioned and traditional, but they're great for strong support and a long life. If you sleep on the edge, coil mattresses are good for you.
  • Pillow-top mattresses are ideal for people who like soft, cushy mattresses. Pillow-top mattresses can have springs underneath or not, but they always have a fluffy, pillowy top for extra softness.
  • Adjustable mattresses let you choose and alter the position and firmness of your bed and some even vibrate or massage you while you sleep. These are pricey but can be great for people with back problems.

Don't fall for big-name brands or add-ons

Anyone who's ever shopped for a new mattress has probably wondered why on Earth these things are so expensive. As The Wirecutter and Slate explain, it's all about marketing costs, brand recognition, crazy profit margins, and monopolies in the mattress market. In the US, you have four major brands owned by two companies: Simmons and Serta vs. Tempur-Pedic and Sealy.

Often, these companies seem to be your only choices, so you end up paying a premium and the big brands end up reaping a killer profit. However, now there are dozens of mattress startups out there that are direct to consumer, offer great warranties, have long return windows, and low prices. We recommend you stay away from the big names and buy from one of these great startups.

You'll also want to consider if you want any add-ons like a mattress cover, mattress pad, sheets, and so on. In the process of buying a mattress, you'll likely be pitched all kinds of different accessories to get, and if you don't go in with a clear idea of what you want, it's easy to fall victim to those pitches and spend way more money than you thought you would. It's best to buy everything else separately, so go to the last slide in this guide to learn about our other great buying guides for bedding.

Nowadays, you can reset your voicemail password with just a few taps. This is great when you want to protect those voicemails from being seen or heard by anyone else.

Luckily, the iPhone still allows you to have a passcode for your voicemail, on top of the password you set to open your device.

I want my daughter to love Harry Potter as much as I do — that’s why I love these printed swaddles and blankets

Limited edition Harry Potter line from aden + anais

I grew up loving Harry Potter and I want to pass down that magic to my daughter Ellie. In fact, I love Harry and the Wizarding World so much that my coworkers threw the cutest Harry Potter-themed baby shower when I was pregnant with Ellie, who is now 15 months old. I plan on slowly introducing her to the series as she grows up and I can't wait until she's old enough to read the books with me.

Until then, I'll keep dressing Ellie in cute HP-inspired clothes, like this limited-edition collection from aden + anais that coincidentally matches her moon and star-inspired nursery. It's safe to say the Harry Potter collection didn't disappoint and Ellie will be snuggling up with the magical prints for years to come.

The prints are very subtle, so it took me a while to appreciate the timelessness of them; I originally wanted a loud print that screamed Harry Potter

There are five different products in the Harry Potter line, and there is something for every age from newborns to toddlers. While I liked each one immediately, I honestly wasn't so sure about the prints because I wanted something that really screamed Harry Potter — these don't. But the more I look at them, the more I love the subtlety.

Fans of the series will love the subtle nods to Hedwig, Golden Snitch, the Invisibility Cloak, the Whomping Willow, deer Patronus, and more. There are four different prints, with the blankets and burpy bibs being reversible with a different print on each side. If I had to choose a favorite, it would be the golden Hedwig print, and I also love the symbolism of wrapping Ellie in a Patronus-inspired print.

I like how the prints aren't loud with logos or trademarks plastered all over them. I can just picture a cute Harry Potter-themed newborn photo session with these swaddles and blankets; those who aren't dedicated Potterheads will still love the whimsical prints too.

Here's what five of my favorite items from the collection are like

Shop the entire collection on Amazon here.

Muslin Swaddles

$59.95, available on Amazon

aden + anais is known for its soft and breathable muslin swaddles; we loved swaddling Ellie in them when she was a newborn, and she still uses them as light blankets now. They were also perfect when she was younger to set her on during tummy time.

Classic Dream Blanket

$59.95, available on Amazon

This blanket is the perfect size for babies and toddlers, and it's warmer and thicker than the muslin swaddles with four layers of muslin instead of just one. We've had one of the classic dream blankets since before Ellie was born and it's still in great condition more than 15 months later.

Oversized Muslin Blanket

$174.95, available on Amazon

Made of the same material as the classic blanket only much bigger, this blanket can stay with your child into adulthood. Or, you know, you could buy it for yourself.

Classy Burpy Bibs

$26.95, available on Amazon

These burp cloths also function as bibs and are so well designed. They're curved to fit nicely around your shoulder as a burp cloth or around your baby's neck like a bib.

Classic Sleeping Bag

$39.95, available on Amazon

Sleeping bags are the perfect wearable blanket to keep babies warm while sleeping and Ellie cozies up in hers every night. We love how this one is soft and breathable while still keeping Ellie warm. It also unzips from the bottom, so it's easy to change diapers in the middle of the night.

This online Rolex marketplace brings much-needed transparency to the resale and trade of high-end watches — here's how it works

$

Bob's Watches

  • Bob's Watches is the world's first and largest pre-owned and vintage Rolex watch exchange. The company makes buying and selling luxury watches an easy and comfortable experience.
  • Unlike some other watch dealers, Bob's Watches brings transparency to the luxury watch market by openly listing buying and selling prices for watches.
  • Every watch sold is guaranteed to be 100% authentic with authentic parts inside, and expert watch specialists and watchmakers double and triple check before any transaction takes place.
  • In addition to Rolex, Bob's Watches is also a reliable source for other luxury brands like Omega, Audemars Piguet, Breitling, Patek Phillip, Tudor, Cartier, and more.

More than just timepieces, luxury watches are viewed as symbols of status, and Rolex is often revered as the pinnacle of them all. It's true that some watch brands — Rolex, for one — aren't priced for everyone, but too many people completely write themselves off as being too far removed from the upper echelon who will have the luxury of owning a high-end watch one day.

Aside from high retail prices, the luxury watch market is full of grey areas for the inexperienced watch buyer. Obscure resale prices and counterfeits lead consumers to believe that buying directly from a Rolex store (where prices are undoubtedly hefty) is the only way to ensure a genuine purchase, but online site Bob's Watches is bringing clarity to the market with a level of transparency unlike that of many other watch dealers.

The world's first and foremost pre-owned and vintage Rolex watch exchanges, Bob's Watches prides itself on maintaining fair prices, providing useful market information, and building trust with consumers by openly listing buying and selling prices for every watch.

Bob's Watches

The business was founded in 2010 when Rolex collector and expert Paul Altieri purchased the domain from retiring watch salesman Bob Thompson for $8,000. Altieri's decision to use a name that wasn't his own started out as a way to jump right into the online space with the domain's relatively inexpensive price and some existing traffic from online search engines.

Today, the company is much bigger than he could've ever imagined. What started out as one man buying and selling his own personal collection online, Bob's Watches has grown into one of the largest online watch sites and a successful brick-and-mortar store in Huntington Beach, California, with a 24-person team including both Rolex specialists and watchmakers.

Rolexes are built by highly skilled watchmakers using the finest materials and Swiss-made internals, so they are known to last a lifetime with proper care, which is one reason why their market is so robust. Another reason is that Rolexes are collector's items. Unlike most used cars that depreciate drastically as soon as you drive them off the lot, they're great at retaining value and, eventually, increase in value.

Still, many online watch dealers specifically capitalize on consumers' lack of knowledge and access to reliable alternatives. For example, a $6,000 Rolex being bought for $2,000 and sold for $10,000 is an all too common occurrence within the watch industry. Bob's Watches, on the other hand, gives consumers true insight on value. The practice leaves buyers and sellers equally comfortable with making transactions online. Yes, Bob's Watches will make a profit when you buy or sell a watch, but they're completely transparent about it—they even list buy and sell prices side by side. For that reason, Bob's Watches has become the place to buy Rolexes online.

Bob's Watches

Here's how it works

Buying a watch from Bob's Watches is as simple as picking which one you'd like and checking out. Every watch listed on the site is in stock, ready to ship out, and guaranteed to be authentic with authentic parts used inside.

Selling is also hassle-free. You can fill out a quote request form here. Once your request is received, Bob's will confirm your requested amount and send you a prepaid shipping label to have your watch sent in for appraisal. Once your watch is received by Bob's Watches, the package is opened and inspected on camera by a watch specialist. The video gives owners peace of mind in knowing that their prized watch won't be swapped out with a fake and sent back with an unexplained failed inspection. Once your watch is inspected and meets the original description, Bob's will contact you to ask your preferred payment method — cash, check, or instant transfer.

In addition to Rolex, Bob's Watches is also a reliable source for other luxury brands like Omega, Audemars Piguet, Breitling, Patek Phillip, Tudor, Cartier, and more.

If you've ever wanted a real-deal luxury watch, you no longer have to shell out an astronomical retail price or blindly navigate a resale market full of scams, fakes, and shady prices. Bob's Watches offers users a huge selection of guaranteed authentic luxury watches at reasonable prices, and with trust and integrity being at the core of not only the company's mission but their very existence, Bob's Watches won't leave you disappointed (or duped) with your purchase.

Floyd Mayweather

Retired boxer Floyd Mayweather won over $1 billion in prize money alone during his 21 year professional career, according to Forbes.

Add that to a variety of sponsorships, including Burger King, Hublot, and FanDuel, as well as the income from his own companies such as Mayweather Promotions and The Money Team, and it's fair to say the 42-year-old has earned more than a fair living.

As much as Mayweather knows how to earn money, however, he also knows how to spend it.

Amongst his lavish purchases over the years are a $25 million Los Angeles mansion, numerous private jets, and his own strip club — but these aren't even the wackiest, most expensive things the retired fighter has ever paid for.

Here are the 11 most ludicrous things Mayweather has ever spent his millions on.

Last year, TMZ reported that Mayweather spent $5.3 million on jewellery alone during a lavish spending spree at Peter Marco in Beverly Hills.

His purchases included a $2.3 million VVS ring, a $2.5 million diamond bracelet, and a 2-pound yellow gold Cuban necklace.

With more free time and high average credit scores, retirees can reap the rewards of travel credit cards more than almost anyone else

retirement

When you consider how most major credit card issuers market their cards these days, it's easy to believe their prime market includes millennials, Gen Xers, and 50- and 60-somethings who are still working. After all, many credit card commercials feature young, seemingly high-income professionals in airport lounges or young families charging their groceries to a rewards credit card to earn cash back. It's easy to believe card issuers are targeting people young enough to spend a lot on their cards — and maybe even those who are likely to rack up long-term debt.

But, you don't have to be in your working years to get approved for a rewards credit card, nor do you have to be cash-strapped to benefit from one. In fact, there are a ton of reasons rewards credit cards are actually ideal for baby boomers and retirees who have already walked away from work.

If you're older and wondering if a rewards credit card could help you travel more or earn free stuff, the answer is probably yes. Here are some of the reasons you should consider a rewards credit card for your everyday spending— along with some of our top picks for earning both cash back and travel rewards.

Keep in mind that we're focusing on the rewards and perks that make these credit cards great options, not things like interest rates and late fees, which will far outweigh the value of any points or miles. It's important to practice financial discipline when using credit cards by paying your balances in full each month, making payments on time, and only spending what you can afford to pay back.

Retirees have lower levels of credit card debt

If you actually hope to benefit from the rewards you earn with a credit card, you have to avoid credit card debt. It's not difficult to see why this matters so much when you consider the fact that the average credit card APR is over 17% at the same time the average rewards card gives you 1-3% back at most.

But statistics show that older people have lower credit card debt levels in general. A 2019 study from ValuePenguin showed that millennials and individuals over the age of 74 tend to have the lowest credit card debt on average, and that they're more likely to not even have a credit card at all. Individuals ages 65 to 74 also had much lower credit card debt levels than those ages 35 to 64.

If you're a retiree who doesn't have any debt, you could easily use a credit card to earn cash back or travel rewards. The key to making the most out of card options available today is using them for purchases you can afford to pay off and paying your bill in full every month.

Some of the best cash-back credit cards don't even have an annual fee. Some examples include:

  • Chase Freedom: When you sign up for the Chase Freedom, you'll earn $150 in bonus cash when you spend $500 on your card within three months. You'll also earn 5% back on up to $1,500 spent in categories that rotate each quarter (when you activate the bonus) plus 1% back on all other purchases. There is no annual fee, and you can redeem rewards for statement credits, gift cards, travel, experiences, and more.
  • Citi® Double Cash Card: The Citi Double Cash, which also comes with no annual fee, lets you earn 2% back for each dollar you spend — 1% back when you make a purchase and another 1% when you pay it off. You can redeem your rewards for statement credits but you can also exchange them for Citi ThankYou points that free up some redemption options like gift cards and merchandise.

Retirees have time to travel

If you've always wished you could travel but couldn't make it work in the thick of your career, the best time to follow your dreams could be now. Plenty of studies show that Americans are often scared to use their vacation days because they're afraid they'll be replaced, and it's a proven fact that companies in the United States offer less time off in general than in many other countries around the world.

But when you're retired, the world is your oyster — provided you can find the funds to get away. Travel credit cards can help since they offer points and miles you can use to score free flights, hotel stays, and more. Some of the best travel credit cards for retirees include:

  • Chase Sapphire Preferred Card: The Chase Sapphire Preferred gives new cardholders 60,000 points, worth $750 in travel, when they spend $4,000 within three months from account opening plus 2x points on travel and dining and 1 point per dollar on other purchases. There's a $95 annual fee, and you can redeem Ultimate Rewards points for travel through the Chase portal, transfer them to airlines and hotels, or redeem for cash back, gift cards, merchandise, and more.
  • Capital One Venture Rewards: The Capital One Venture is an extremely easy travel credit card to use and understand. This card lets you earn 2 miles per dollar on everything you buy (plus 10x miles on paid hotels booked via hotels.com/venture), and you can also earn 50,000 miles when you spend $3,000 on your card within three months of account opening. On the redemption side of the equation, you can cash in miles for any type of travel at a rate of 1 cent per point, but you can also transfer to a handful of airline partners.

Retirees can take advantage of last-minute travel deals

Travel can be considerably cheaper when you're able to take advantage of last-minute travel deals, and that's especially true if you're flexible on where you go. You could search for last-minute cruises, play around with Google Flights to find the least expensive flight options for where you want to go, or sign up for airfare alerts that let you know when a sale comes up from your home airport.

Websites like The Flight Deal and Secret Flying also let you find out about short-term and last-minute travel deals all over the globe, and most of these deals are last-minute or only available for select dates.

Retirees can avoid peak travel times

Anyone who has worked in an office with other people knows how difficult it can be to get vacation approved when the kids are out of school or during winter, spring, and summer breaks. But when you're a retiree, you can theoretically travel any time you want.

Being able to book off-peak travel can definitely help you enjoy your favorite destinations with much lighter crowds, and prices can be considerably lower, too. Frequent flyer programs and hotel programs also tend to have more availability outside peak travel dates as well, which makes it easier to cash in your points and miles.

They have good credit

Most of the top rewards and travel credit cards require consumers to have good credit, which typically entails having a FICO score of 740 or above. While this can be a difficult bar to reach for some age groups, those in the older age brackets don't seem to have a problem.

In fact, a recent study from Experian showed that consumers ages 60 and older had the highest average credit score of all age groups, at 749. The next-highest average credit score (706) went to consumers ages 50 to 59, and scores were all downhill from there.

If you're a retiree with great credit, you have yet another edge that could make rewards work for you. But you will never benefit from a rewards credit card if you don't sign up for one.

The Finger Lakes: An intro

The Finger Lakes region is about a five-hour drive from Manhattan, New York — but it feels like a whole different world.

The area boasts a total of 11 lakes, after which the region is aptly named. From hiking through state parks to strolling through wineries, there's something for all types of visitors to do year-round — but with the gorgeous foliage in the fall, it's a great autumn getaway.

Because the area covers so much ground, we teamed up with a local real-estate agent to get her insight on the best parts of the Finger Lakes to visit, no matter what you're looking for. With her guidance, we focused in on the areas around Canandaigua Lake, Keuka Lake, Seneca Lake, Cayuga Lake, Owasco Lake, and Skaneateles Lake.

In 2018, the region welcomed 5.56 million visitors. That's in addition to the 1.2 million people, or 6.1% of the state's population, who call it home, according to a 2017 report by the state government.

Keep reading for tips from a local expert on how to enjoy the Finger Lakes.

Best of dining: For something delicious, head over to Canandaigua Lake.

According to Fitzgerald, Canandaigua is the best place to go for a good meal. It boasts fresh produce and spectacular lake views.

"It's just a wonderful place for dining," Fitzgerald told Business Insider.

Along with delicious meals, the 16-mile lake supplies drinking water to 48,000 residents and is home to various types of farmlands.

In fact, according to VisitFingerLakes.com, "The town of Canandaigua relies on agriculture as a viable part of its economy, from sizable crop farms and dairy farms to smaller farms growing hops, vegetables and other specialty crops."

Fitzgerald's top pick for dining is Nolan's on Canandaigua Lake. The menu here is best known for its variety of steaks, seafood, and pasta dishes.

And, to top the night off, guests can enjoy an array of wines ranging from Ruffino Sparkling Rosé to Mionetto Prosecco Brut, both of which will cost you less than $30 per bottle.

Best of wineries: Sip on a glass of wine while enjoying the views of Seneca Lake.

The Finger Lakes region is known for its array of wineries scattered along the lakes. But, according to Fitzgerald, Seneca Lake is home to some of the best.

There are over 30 wineries that make up the Seneca Lake Wine Trail, and it's home to more wineries than any other lake in the region.

"The Seneca Lake Wine Trail goes all the way down the west side of Seneca Lake and then back up the east side of Seneca Lake," Fitzgerald explained to Business Insider.

Fitzgerald's top pick is Villa Bellangelo Winery, which is located on the west side of Seneca Lake.

"Great variety of wines, the atmosphere is wonderful, there are beautiful views of Seneca Lake, and the owners and staff are top-notch," Fitzgerald told Business Insider.

According to its website, Villa Bellangelo Winery made Wine & Spirits list of the Top 100 Wines of 2018. Its 2015 Berry Select Riesling was given a score of 94.

Best of nightlife: If you're looking for a fun night out, Canandaigua Lake is the place to go.

After spending a day strolling through wineries, Fitzgerald suggests heading over to Canandaigua Lake for a great night out.

A night out in the area features everything from pubs and wine bars to live music and waterfront views.

"They've got a lot of festivals that go on, they've got art shows and even downtown music," Fitzgerald told Business Insider.

Lincoln Hill Farm is just one example of the entertainment options on Canandaigua Lake.

Along with an array of dining options, Lincoln Hills Farms also hosts events.

Best investment: If you want to buy a house but aren't looking to shell out millions, look no further than Seneca Lake.

Seneca Lake is around 38 miles long.

"The further you get to the center, the more rural you get, and you'll get a better deal,"  Fitzgerald told Business Insider.

This home on Seneca Lake recently closed for $535,000. The three-bedroom home comes with everything from lake frontage to a dock.

Best of real estate: Now, if you just want to look at some gorgeous real estate, head east to Skaneateles Lake.

For all luxury home enthusiasts, Skaneateles Lake is the best place to see the biggest and most beautiful homes in the Finger Lakes region, according to Fitzgerald.

"It's a very small lake so the most expensive homes are going to be within the upper two or three miles of Skaneateles Lake," Fitzgerald told Business Insider.

Fitzgerald mentioned that Canandaigua Lake, a close second, also sports stunning homes. It isn't unusual for lakefront homes there to be listed on the market for over $1 million.

According to LakeHomes.com, there are, at any given time, around 20 homes for sale on Skaneateles Lake.

On Skaneateles Lake, the average listing price is $1,100,000. Currently, some properties for sale are asking for nearly $10 million and boast over 20 acres of land.

Best retreat spot: The best place to go to escape the hustle and bustle of the real world, according to Fitzgerald, is Seneca Lake.

Along with its tasty wineries and affordable homes, Seneca Lake is also the go-to spot for visitors looking to kick back and relax.

"A lot of people, from all over the world, come to the Watkins Glen International race track," Fitzgerald told Business Insider. "People love to get away and go to these boutique areas."

Fitzgerald named Keuka Lake as the runner up for the best retreat spot.

"It's kind of like being on a lake, but you feel like you're in the Adirondack Mountains," she said.

In addition to the Watkins Glen International race track, Seneca Lake is also home to Watkins Glen State Park, which boasts 19 waterfalls and is the most famous of the Finger Lakes State Parks.

Watkins Glen State Park is a popular spot for tourists and outdoor enthusiasts. Its Gorge Trail, which spans roughly two miles, brings visitors past 19 waterfalls and up roughly  800 stone steps.

Along with hiking, the park also includes a swimming pool, picnic facilities, and tent and trailer camp sites.

I tried both Amtrak's new food service and its traditional dining car, and now I understand why people were so upset about the change

steak

Surf and turf was far from what I expected to eat on my first cross-country Amtrak trip.

I had previously reported on a massive backlash to some dining-car changes on shorter routes, where custom-cooked food is going by the wayside, but the promise of gourmet eats on a moving train in the middle of North Dakota seemed far-fetched to say the least.

Determined to figure out for myself what was behind the hype, I set off on Amtrak's Empire Builder in Chicago last week. Over three days — and five meals — we crossed through wide expanses of the American heartland, through towns large and small, and past beautiful snow-capped peaks.

Read more: It took me 96 hours to ride an Amtrak train from coast to coast. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

To be sure, the food on this part of my journey was a stark difference from my introduction to dining on rails. On the first half of the trek from coast to coast, I tried Amtrak's new "contemporary" meal service, which has rolled out on some routes east of the Mississippi River.

But after Chicago, things improved massively. Here's what we ate:

Dinner requires reservations, which immediately signals "fancy" to me.

By the time the attendant came to take my choice, I was relegated to either 5:30 (too early) or 8:30. I went with the latter, seeing as I had two days to kill on this train.

Despite the reservation, you still have to wait to be called to the dining car.

Near each thirty-minute time slot, a dining car attendant came over the intercom inviting passengers to make their way to dinner. From there, I waited at the door as instructed to be sat at one of the roughly 12 four-top tables.

Next is where things get bizarre. Each passenger has to fill out this slip, which looks not unlike a Scantron answer sheet from school.

The bubbles have items in general categories like "poultry entree" or "healthy menu option." I assume these let the company track what's being ordered, while allowing for some flexibility.

"They've said computers are coming for the entire 12 years I've worked here," the waiter said when I asked whether the forms were eventually scanned into a computer or somehow tallied.

The menu had way more choices than I expected. And with only two dinners, I wanted to make the most of it.

I eventually settled on the "land and sea combo," because, let's face it, I'm never going to pass up a steak.

Alcohol, unfortunately, is not included with dining-car meals on this train. I also forgot to take a photo of my dessert — a cheesecake with freshly whipped cream — because of the riveting conversation with my table-mates.

After waking up in Snowy North Dakota, I needed a hearty breakfast, and pancakes did the trick.

Fluffy pancakes with crispy edges and gobs of butter — with a thick slab of pork sausage on the side — were exactly what I needed to warm up and wake up.

With all the calorie burning I got from sitting around the train all day reading and listening to podcasts, a hearty lunch was in store. I went with the cheeseburger (bacon added, of course).

My lunchtime companions ordered the steamed mussels, which looked delicious. I do regret that I had but one lunch to eat on this journey.

I chose the latest reservation slot again for my second, and final, dinner. This time I went with the salmon.

It wasn't the best fish I've ever had. It was slightly dry, but still had plenty of flavor. The spicy sauce was delicious, too. It's hard to mess up a baked potato, which I also wolfed down in no time.

My dessert this time was a chocolate bundt cake, also with whipped cream, and a caramel sauce in the middle. It put me right into a sugar coma and I passed out for the night.

The next morning, I overslept and missed the pancakes before they sold out. Instead, I went with an omelette of green onions and bell peppers, with grits and a croissant on the side.

Since things were quiet, and service had finished for the trip, I popped my head into the small service area to see the dumbwaiters that carry food up from the kitchen below.

It's impressive how many individual dishes such a small kitchen can churn out while in a moving train.

Luckily, the dining car changes that are affecting the East Coast might not come in their exact iteration to these longer routes.

"West of the Mississippi, these trains are typically two nights," Roger Harris, Amtrak chief marketing and commercial officer told me.

"They're typically a 48-hour train to the West Coast, so the onboard service is a more important part of the journey, and people have more dining events while they're traveling. It's more complicated than on the East Coast, where people generally get on in the evening, have a meal, and then get off in the evening."

That's sure to be welcome news for the travelers who look forward to these meals.

Sugar Land

  • For wealthy families wanting to save on taxes, these 15 cities in Washington, Texas, Florida, and Indiana are the best, according to data from GOBankingRates
  • The data considers state and local taxes, the costs of homes, median incomes, and community factors like crime rates and school quality.
  • Suburbs near cities in Florida, Texas, and Washington dominate the list, especially since these states have no state income taxes.
  • Most of the cities on the list are suburbs of cities like Houston and Dallas. By living just outside of cities, the data shows that wealthy families can avoid paying high city taxes, and enjoy lower crime rates, better schools, and bigger homes for less.
  • Read more personal finance coverage.

Wealthy families live all over the US, but they aren't always paying the same amount of taxes.

GOBankingRates looked at the cities that offered the best tax benefits for wealthy citizens, along with the median household income, price of a top-tier home, and the quality of schools and crime rates. It found that while there were opportunities across the country in Alabama, Massachussetts, and Indiana for families to take advantage of low taxes, the best places for wealthy families were overwhelmingly suburbs in Texas.

There are a few reasons why suburbs and Texas made the list so frequently. Texas is one of nine states in the US that doesn't impose income taxes on residents, along with Florida and Washington (states which also had suburbs on the list). In the suburbs, it's far easier to find better home values and lower taxes than inside the city limits.

These suburbs were ranked based on the factors above, with taxes being the No. 1 factor. Here are the 15 places in the US where wealthy families pay the least in taxes:

15. Hoover, Alabama

State and local taxes for the top 1% of families: 6.8%

Income tax rate for the typical family: 0%

State and local taxes for the top 1% of families: 3%

Millennials are dropping up to $150,000 to decorate their homes like their grandma's house, and it says a lot about what the generation loves and hates

grandmillennial

Porcelain figurines, English antiques, chintz wallpaper, brocade curtains.

No, this isn't your grandma's house — it's the home of "grandmillennials."

Emma Bazilian first coined the term in a House Beautiful article to refer to the 20- and 30-somethings who love an antiquated design aesthetic. And Shayne Benowitz of The New York Post recently talked to several of these grandmillennials, who are taking décor inspiration everywhere from English country houses to neo-preppy brands like Rodarte and spending big bucks — think anywhere for $5,000 to $150,000 — to do it.

Design experts told both Bazilian and Benowitz that millennials are putting an updated spin on this style to show off their personal flair and create a homey feeling. The aesthetic is a response to the minimalist, neutral trends that have been reigning over Instagram, they said.

"People want design with more soul and personality," Brooklyn-based designer Caroline Pogue, who specializes in vintage residential interiors, told Benowitz. "It's also fueled by a renewed interest in vintage fashion and an ethos for reusing items."

A post shared by Emma Bazilian (@ebazilian) on

The grandmillennial aesthetic says a lot about what millennials like and don't like

The trend is both a contradiction of and an embodiment of what millennials love.

Millennials are known for being partial to minimalist, low-maintenance designs and sleek, discreet appliances in homes, Business Insider's Katie Warren previously reported. Some even love a minimalist lifestyle so much that they prefer to live in tiny houses.

The rise of the grandmillennial is a knee-jerk, maximalist reaction to that very minimalism. However, it's also on par with the ugly fashion movement. Consumers are dropping hundreds of dollars on "ugly fashion" trends like Balenciaga's Triple S sneakers and Birkenstocks, Business Insider's Mary Hanbury reported.

For some millennials, more really is more: Both the "ugly fashion" style and grandmillennial aesthetic have "extra," or lavish, tendencies, but at the end of the day, they're all about comfort.

As Bazilian wrote, "Maybe the ultimate appeal of the grandmillennial aesthetic lies in the fact that, for the stressed-out twenty- and thirty-somethings of the world, that cozy chintz chair at your grandmother's house represents a much-needed respite."
