Highway 1 Big Sur

From a night out under the gleaming lights of New York City to long weekends at Disneyland, America's most heavily touristed places rarely see an off-season.

On Friday, GoBankingRates released its 2019 ranking of the country's most in-demand touristy destinations that are great for owning rental property. These busy markets can create a stream of steady passive income for owners, and investment properties can also serve as great winter or summer homes on the side.

And, as the ranking notes, with booking platforms like Airbnb shaking up the home rental market, there has never been an easier time to rent out property to vacationers and cash in on the booming travel industry.

Read more: Airbnb just announced it expects to go public in 2020. Meet CEO Brian Chesky, who cofounded the company in 2008 to help pay his San Francisco apartment's rent and is now worth $4.2 billion.

Ranging from the rugged mountain ranges of northern California to tropical islands off the coast of southern Florida, here are the 25 best tourist destinations across the US for rental property investments.

Note: All annual rental revenue and rental rate figures are sourced from short-term vacation rental data and analytics provider AirDNA via GoBankingRates' methodology. Each area's (or surrounding county's) median price of homes currently listed for sale is sourced from Zillow.

How to connect a Xbox One controller to your Xbox One console, with or without a USB cable

xbox one sync button

  • You can connect a wireless Xbox One controller to your console by pressing the sync button on your controller and the corresponding sync button on your console.
  • You can also connect the wireless controller to your console with a microUSB cord, and then disconnect the cable. The controller and console will remain synced.
  • Wired Xbox One controllers are available for about half the price of wireless controllers, and simply connect to the console physically.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

There are several different ways to play your Xbox One, and which one you pick will probably depend on your budget, and how far away you sit from your console.

You can buy both wired and wireless controllers for your Xbox One. Wireless controllers are more expensive, but allow you to sit farther away from the Xbox One console.

And, of course, the way you connect each type to the console is different. Here's how.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Xbox One Wireless Controller (From $59.99 at Best Buy)

PowerA Enhance Wired Controller for Xbox One (For $29.99 at Best Buy)

How to connect an Xbox One controller to your console

Wired controllers

The easiest way to connect an Xbox One controller to the system is to use a wired controller, and simply plug its USB cable into the console physically.

Wired controllers cost about half as much as wireless options, and many gamers say they eliminate lag time that one can experience with wireless hardware (sometimes called input lag).

Wireless controllers

A wireless Xbox remote gives you more freedom of motion. Also, they're laughably easy to sync up to the console once you know.

There are two ways to connect a wireless Xbox One controller to the console. First, we'll do it through a microUSB cable.

Using any microUSB cable (if you have any device aside from an iPhone that uses a USB cable, there's a good chance that it's a microUSB cable), plug the small end of the cable into the slot on the back of the remote, and the USB plug into a port on the console.

IMG_4273

Now wait a few seconds until the Xbox button on the remote and on the console both glow solidly. You're synced. You can now unplug the controller and use it wirelessly.

To connect the remote and console without a cable, press and hold the sync button on top of the remote.

IMG_4271

Once the Xbox button starts flashing, push the corresponding sync button on the console.

  • On an Xbox One X and One S console, you'll find this button on the front, below the power button. It'll be small and circular, and have the same curved lines symbol.
  • On an original Xbox One console, the sync button is on the side, and is a rectangle with the curved lines symbol.

When both Xbox symbols are solid, you're ready to play.

The best electric razors

$
0
0
  • If you don't mind spending a little extra, an electric razor can give you a close shave, while also helping you perfectly groom your facial hair and more.
  • The Braun Series 7 is our top pick because it is powerful, versatile, and effective at removing facial and other body hair.

Modern electric razors can provide a close shave at home. While they can't quite match the closeness of the shave you'd receive from a talented barber, they're far more convenient and safe than the straight razor.

An electric razor uses spinning blades or blades that oscillate back and forth to cut the coarse hairs on the face tightly to the skin. Guards surround the blades to protect your skin from the moving blades. Most guards also contain slots or holes that catch the hairs and lift them upward, so the blades can clip them more effectively.

The heads on the electric shavers will flex singularly from each other, allowing the razor to match the contours of your face, which helps you achieve a closer shave.

One of the best features of modern electric razors is the ability to use them in wet or dry environments, as well as with shaving gel or foam.

Foil vs. rotary electric razors

The primary choice you'll have with electric razors is the design you want. Some people prefer a foil-style shaver, while others like a rotary-style shaver.

  • Foil: The foil electric shaver contains oscillating blades that move back and forth at high speeds. These blades are covered with guards that lift hair for cutting and that protect the skin. A foil razor will often have a few separate cutting blades that flex independently to match the contours of your face. However, because a foil head has a rectangular shape, it might not match your face as well as a rotary razor.
  • Rotary: The rotary razor has round blades that spin. You'll receive protection from the spinning rotary blades with a slotted guard that sits atop the blades and helps to lift the hairs so they're easier to cut. The heads flex in multiple directions, giving you a close shave by hugging the contours of your face. However, rotary heads are more difficult to clean after shaving versus the foil shaver.

Here are the best electric razors you can buy:

Updated on 10/8/2019 by Les Shu: Updated prices, links, and formatting. We are currently researching and testing new options for a future update, but we still recommend the products listed here.

The best electric razor overall

The Braun Series 7 is able to "read" your beard, automatically adjusting its power to give you a close shave.

The Braun Series 7 (model 7865cc) may just be the most useful item in a man's bathroom. This electric razor is capable of determining how thick your facial hair is in order to automatically adjust its power, so you'll be able to get a clean and even shave in just one pass.

This is made possible by Braun's Sonic and AutoSense technology, and when coupled with its eight-directional flexible shaving head, the shaver moves with the contours of your face and neck for a careful, close shave.

The MicroMotion technology lets you move each element of the shaving system independently across delicate or difficult to shave areas, like your neck or Adam's apple. MacroMotion, on the other hand, lets the head of the razor pivot up to 40 degrees, so you can turn your razor any which way as you make your way across your face.

Taken together, these two features mean that you can make quick work of your morning shave, confident that you haven't missed a spot or left any stubble.

The Braun Series 7 comes with a Clean and Charge Station with cleaning solution, a cleaning brush, and a travel case, which makes maintaining the razor as easy as maintaining your own hygiene — if you remember to refill the cleaning solution, that is.

The Series 7 is also entirely waterproof, so you can even bring it in the shower with you or rinse it off in the sink when you're done. — Lulu Chang

Pros: Quality construction, waterproof, provides a great, close shave in just one pass

Cons: Some customers have reported a slower shave

The best affordable electric razor

The Remington F5-5800 has just enough features to make it a smart, budget-friendly choice.

Electric shavers can be expensive, especially foil style shavers, but Remington consistently offers models with good performance, at the affordable end of the market. The Remington F5-5800 is one of the better razors available for such a low price. It certainly has some drawbacks, but it will give you a decent level of performance, considering what you're paying.

The F5-5800 has a nicely contoured handle that makes it comfortable to use. Meanwhile, the head on this electric razor is just the right size to reach hard-to-shave areas, such as just below the nose. Keep in mind, though, that the Remington F5-5800 does not allow for wet shaves, and it won't work with shaving foam or gel.

The rechargeable battery on the Remington F5-5800 is reliable, and the handle of the razor contains a series of LEDs that indicate the current charge level, which is convenient.

Many people like to use the F5-5800 as a travel razor or as a second razor at the office, because of its small size and low price. Shaver Guru likes the pop-up trimmer that allows you to closely trim your mustache or sideburns, which is a feature you don't always find on an inexpensive electric shaver.

Because the F5-5800 has two foil areas, it will match the contours of your face more closely than foil shavers that just have one foil, according to Male Sense Pro.

One Amazon buyer said he has to shave his coarse beard twice a day and found that the F5-5800 stands up to this regular usage extremely well, providing a close shave every time.

One problem many Amazon reviewers mentioned is the failing of the foil screens on the razor after several months. This can expose sharp edges on the F5-5800 that could cause nicks and cuts while shaving. — Kyle Schurman

Pros: Low price point for a foil style shaver, small size and comfortable handle, includes a pop-up trimmer for close grooming work, foils on the shaver will tilt back and forth to match your face

Cons: Doesn't have the longevity of other electric razors, will not work with foam or gel, may develop sharp edges over time

The best high-end electric razor

The Braun Series 9 offers all of the latest features found in an electric razor to make it more comfortable to use, while also yielding a close shave.

The Braun Series 9 (9290cc) electric foil shaver is an upgrade to both Series 7 and older Series 9 Braun shavers with the latest design features. Although you'll pay extra for these features, the 9290CC is well worth the extra money.

The cutting head consists of four separate areas. The outer areas cut close to the skin, while the two inner areas lift and cut hairs. That way, you catch hairs that are lying flat and those that are growing in an odd direction.

If you haven't liked the feel of pivoting heads in electric razors in the past because they didn't fit the contours of your face well, don't worry about that issue with the 9290CC. Braun included a 10-direction pivoting head that provides all of the flexibility you'll need.

As one final advantage over its predecessors, the 9290CC has one of the largest heads found on an electric shaver, allowing you to finish shaving a bit more quickly than with other electric razors. This Braun razor will work in wet or dry conditions, and you can use it with shaving foam or gel.

Other reviewers liked this razor, too. Techlicious said the Braun 9290CC is the best electric shaver currently on the market, while Man Tripping liked using it as a travel razor because it comes with many extras, including a case that keeps stray trimmings from flying loosely in your suitcase.

On Amazon, one buyer said the Braun 9290CC is especially good at trimming stubborn and extra-coarse white and gray hairs in your beard, and it also excels at personal grooming in other parts of the body. — Kyle Schurman

Pros: Flexible 10-direction pivoting head, four different cutting areas for close shaves, good for trimming various types of hair, large shaving head to complete the job faster

Cons: Plastic design in the razor body that feels flimsy, expensive

The best electric razor for thick facial hair

If your electric razor painfully pulls your coarse beard hairs more than it actually cuts them, then get the Panasonic Arc5 electric razor for a clean and comfortable cut.

Although having thick facial hair looks good, it does have a drawback when you want to be clean shaven. Cutting through that coarse hair can be difficult, especially with many electric razors, leaving you with what seems like a permanent 5 o'clock shadow.

The Panasonic Arc5 (LV65-S) uses five shaving heads with lifting foils to catch every hair on the face, even the really thick ones. Additionally, the Arc5 cutting system can deliver up to 14,000 cuts per minute (cpm), which ensures the razor cuts coarse hairs closely.

The Panasonic also wins in terms of accessories. There's a shaver cap so that you can prevent your blades from going dull when it's not in use, a travel pouch, and a lock that ensures that your shaver won't magically turn itself on when you're not around (and having been around my fair share of self-vibrating razors, I can tell you that's a major perk).

There are five blades that offer an extremely close shave, and its precision-honed 30-degree inner blades do, in fact, provide a very exacting result. The 14,000 cpm linear motor isn't just impressive-sounding: it delivers, too, resulting in a quick grooming routine. In fact, the efficiency of the razor has been what has convinced the men in my life that this is the way to go in terms of electric shavers.

The Multi-Flex pivoting head allows for easy contouring around your face, and similarly, the Multi-Fit foils conform to the curves of your face for a more comfortable experience. And as for that fancy-looking charging dock, it also serves as a cleaning station that automatically sanitizes and dries your razor when you're done for the day.

Unlike some other electric razors made for thick facial hair that do more ripping than cutting, Autumn Damask blog said the Arc5 LV65-S delivers a sharp cut use after use, thanks to its fast-moving oscillating blades.

This also is a wet/dry shaver, meaning you can use it with shaving foam or gel if desired. Using the Arc5 with shaving foam delivers an even better performance when shaving coarse hair, according to ShaverCheck— Lulu Chang and Kyle Schurman

Pros: Extremely close shave on thick beards, cuts coarse facial hair better than razors that pull, reasonable price for this type of razor, includes multiple extras and accessories

Cons: Oversized head can make it tough to reach spots under the nose, may be too rough for some people in the neck area

The best razor for shaving your head

The professional-grade Andis T-Outliner is the perfect electric razor for guys who shave or buzz cut their heads.

If you shave your full head multiple times a week and you're sick of paying the barbershop to get it done, you may want to pick up the professional-grade Andis T-Outliner. This electric razor is used in many barbershops, and guys who shave their full head swear by it. You can also use it for trimming your neck, beard, mustache, and to do edging around your ears.

The Andis T-Outliner trimmer uses a close-cutting T-shaped blade that's perfect for full head shaving, fades, and designs. Andis sells a cordless version, but the one we reviewed has a heavy-duty 8-foot cord, so even though it's corded, you'll still have plenty of room to move.

The trimmer's carbon-steel blades are specially hardened so that they last longer than your average blade. The blades are fairly easy and inexpensive to replace, though, so when the time comes, it's an easy swap.

You do have to oil it often to keep it running smoothly, and every now and then it'll need a full tune-up. That does require unscrewing some small screws to oil the insides, but you won't have to do this regularly.

Our tester has used this trimmer for 12 years, and he uses it at least twice a week to fully shave his head. It has worked like a charm for all these years, and he fully expects it to continue to do so. He's also only had to replace the blade and open it up for oiling once in 12 years.

Reviewers on Amazon confirmed our tester's statements. Many say it's the only trimmer they'll use and others say they've used the T-Outliner for 25 years or more. — Malarie Gokey

Pros: Professional, affordable, dry shaving, phasing, great for full head shaving, lasts years

Cons: Needs oiling, which involves removing screws

How one of the few queer black women in venture capital clears her mind to overcome bias and get things done

Arlan

  • Backstage Capital founder and venture capitalist Arlan Hamilton's productivity trick is to forgive other people for their wrongdoings.
  • Forgiveness will keep you from dwelling on what other people say about you or their unfair treatment toward you, Hamilton told Business Insider. That way you can focus more on your job.

Arlan Hamilton's trick to getting stuff done isn't jotting things down on a planner or drinking more water: it's forgiving others.

Hamilton, the founder of Backstage Capital and one of the few queer black women in venture capital, found that agonizing over the unfair ways she had been treated in the past kept her from doing her job.

Earlier this year, for example, Hamilton said she spent days thinking about an instance where she had been "unfairly portrayed" online. She soon realized she was spending more time thinking about other peoples' actions than getting her job done.

Hamilton made a decision to forgive the people who she felt wronged her — that way, she took control of the situation and wasn't as impacted by other peoples' actions.

Read more:INTRODUCING: The 10 people transforming how the world interacts with technology

"Once I did what was in my power to do and forgave them, I was back in control," Hamilton told Business Insider. "I got a lot of work done, and we're stronger for it as an organization."

Hamilton created Backstage Capital in part to counter the impacts of unconscious bias in venture capital. Founders who are women, people of color, or LGBTQ are less likely to get VC funding, according to a 2019 study. Hamilton herself recalled being told she must work twice as hard to be taken seriously in venture capital, she told Fast Company.

Hamilton's experience isn't uncommon. Women and queer people face greater sexual harassment in the workplace, and research finds racial minorities tend to get passed up for promotions or big projects due to unconscious bias. The New York Times' Alan Henry recently said productivity advice is meaningless for people dealing with injustice at work.

"That's the real factor determining whether you can take productivity advice at face value: privilege," Henry wrote. "Ultimately, if your boss or co-workers believe that women shouldn't be in the workplace, or that African-Americans are unmotivated, no 'productivity hack' will force them to objectively look at your accomplishments and decisions the way they would employees they view without biases."

Hamilton says forgiveness can help overcome other peoples' unfair treatment. Forgiveness helps you stop dwelling on the wrongdoings of the past and take control to move forward at work, she said.

"It's really important to understand that a part of valuing yourself is knowing when and if you're being treated poorly, but that you can also repurpose that by internally forgiving people of certain things," Hamilton said. "This allows you to let go of that time that you would have spent letting it consume you and you can now use it for more productive things."

Casper quietly updated its most popular mattress — here's what's new and what sleeping on it feels like

  • A high-quality bed-in-a-box provides comfort and support for a broad range of sleeping positions, keeps motion transfer to a minimum, and comes with a lengthy risk-free trial period.
  • I like the recently updated Casper mattress because it keeps my usually hot body nice and cool, provides excellent edge support, and the firm foam kept my spine aligned while I slept on my stomach.
  • Though it's more expensive than a lot of options out there (currently starting at $595 for a Twin on Casper), you can try the mattress for 100 nights risk free, and it comes with a 10-year limited warranty.
  • Business Insider readers can use the promo code "INSIDER" at checkout to get up to $100 off the Casper mattress.

Though the bed-in-a-box industry continues to attract new start-ups, there are a few brands that are starting to set themselves apart from the competition.

One of those brands is Casper. The company was an instant success when it launched five years ago. Since then, it has expanded its offerings to five different mattresses, along with pillows, bed frames, bedding, and an array of accessories.

Recently, Casper updated its best-selling all-foam mattress with a new zoned-support layer designed to provide specialized pressure relief to targeted parts of the body. I had the opportunity to test out this new mattress, and below are my experiences with it.

Read more: The best mattresses you can buy

Design

The Casper mattress consists of four foam layers for a total of 12 inches of support. The layers from top to bottom are:

  • Breathable open-cell foam
  • High-density memory foam
  • Zoned transition foam
  • Durable support foam

All of the foam layers are CertiPUR-US-certified, which means they aren't made with ozone-depleting chemicals. The mattress is also fully encased in an easy-to-remove zip-off cover in case you wanted to wash it.

The mattress is available in Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, and California King sizes. I tested the Queen-sized mattress, which weighs a manageable (to me) 85 pounds. For more products specs, check out the Casper website.

If you want to check out the mattress in person before you buy it, you can visit one of Casper's brick-and-mortar stores in just about every major cityand even reserve a 30-minute sleep trial. Casper is also available at Target stores across the nation.

Set-up process

You can skip the whole set-up process by choosing in-home setup at checkout. With this service, Casper sends someone to unbox and set up your mattress, foundation, and/or bed frame. They'll also remove the packaging and take away your old mattress and/or foundation if you need it. The service costs $149 regardless of how many products you order and is available throughout the US; there is some availability in Canada too.

I chose to set the mattress up myself, which I didn't find too difficult. It comes with unboxing instructions and removing all of the packaging took about five minutes. I found it helpful to open both ends of the box and fold the flaps of one end of the box down to serve as handles while I slid the bed out.

As soon as the mattress was free from the packaging, it started to expand. Since memory foam often has an odor at first, I let it air out for about a day before I slept on it. That being said, I didn't notice odors at any point.

Though the company recommends use with the Casper foundation, the mattress is designed to work with all standard foundations. It also suggests that you provide as much direct support under the mattress as possible, which is the standard for foam beds, but since I was testing several mattresses at once and didn't want to introduce any confounding variables into my comparisons, I simply slept with the Casper directly on the floor.

What makes the updated Casper mattress stand out

The only way to know for sure that a mattress is right for you is to actually sleep on it.

Fortunately, Casper allows you to do this by offering a 100-night, risk-free trial. Basically, if you aren't satisfied with your mattress, you give the company a call and it'll send a local charity or recycling center to your home to remove it. I'm a hot sleeper, but I stayed surprisingly cool on the Casper mattress. Most foam mattresses tend to trap heat, but thanks to the open-cell foam used in the top layer of the bed, the Casper version is more breathable.

Screen Shot 2019 05 13 at 10.29.11 AM

I was also impressed by the edge support. I slept on the bed by myself so I can't speak to how well it works with multiple people, but I didn't feel much give when sitting or laying right on the edge. It was also easy to sit on the side to put on socks and shoes — I didn't feel like I was going to fall off.

The Casper did an excellent job in my motion transfer test. I dropped a 20-pound weight from four feet above the mattress so that it'd land 12 inches away from a can of soda. The can of soda stayed upright, which showed me that motion doesn't transfer easily. This is an indicator that the Casper may help you sleep through someone tossing and turning in the night or, in my case, a cat prancing around.

Thanks to its firmness, the mattress is easy to move around. This is helpful when you're putting on a fitted sheet, performing regular mattress maintenance (which means rotating every six months), if you decide to move, or if you rearrange your bedroom.

The Casper mattress is backed by a 10-year limited warranty that covers deterioration, physical flaws, manufacturing defects, and major indentations that occur despite normal usage, proper handling, and the use of a supportive foundation.

Cons to consider

The Casper is firmer than your average mattress. This makes it ideal for heavier individuals as well as back sleepers. However, I'm a side sleeper with stomach sleeping tendencies. On my mattress, I had trouble getting comfortable on my side because it was so firm, so I defaulted to my stomach. If you're only able to sleep on your side, you might want to consider the Casper Hybrid instead.

Because it's so firm, The Casper also doesn't have much bounce to it so it isn't fun for the kids to jump on. However, the firmness of the mattress allows for individuals to move freely since they're not sinking in.

The bottom line

Overall, I enjoy the Casper mattress and my favorite aspect is how cool it keeps me — this is definitely a great mattress to have during the summer months.

The firmness is a bit much for my side-sleeping, but it serves me well when I'm on my stomach. And the absence of motion transfer ensures I'm not being awoken throughout the night by my cat. I strongly recommend the updated Casper foam mattress for back and stomach sleepers, especially if you share a bed with someone or you tend to sleep hot like me.

Right now, Business Insider readers can also use the code "INSIDER" at checkout to get up to $100 off select Casper mattresses.

Pros: Breathable open-cell foam top layer help keeps you cool, offers firm support, has excellent motion transfer dampening, has great edge support, includes 100-day risk-free trial

Cons: Might be too firm for some side sleepers, has very little bounce, could be expensive for some

Buy the updated Casper mattress — from $595 (twin) to $1,195 (California king)

The best wake-up light alarm clocks

$

  • Wake-up light alarm clocks can be seriously helpful in ensuring you wake up in the best way possible, so you can be productive from minute one.
  • That's why we've chosen the Philips Wake-Up Light Alarm Clock as our top pick — because it's fully capable of ensuring you wake up ready to go.

Waking up is no fun. We all know the feeling of being deep into our third sleep cycle of the night, only to be abruptly yanked out by a rude alarm clock. Thankfully, alarm clocks have evolved a lot over the past few years, so that the feeling of waking up cold may soon be a thing of the past.

Thanks to a ton of research into the science of sleep and how we wake up, there are a number of products on the market designed to help you get to sleep, stay asleep during the night, and then wake up easily. Most of the products on this list address that last issue, though you'll find that many of them help you out with getting to sleep and tracking your sleep, too.

There are a few things to consider when you're buying a light therapy alarm clock. For starters, you'll want to consider if you're looking for any extra features from your alarm clock. Some of them, for example, offer sleep tracking, while others double as a Bluetooth speaker. There are even a few that allow you to turn off the actual clock at night to keep the room nice and dark.

Here are the best wake-up light alarm clocks you can buy:

Updated on 10/08/2019 by Caitlin Petreycik: Updated prices, links, and formatting.

The best overall

The Philips Wake-Up Light Alarm Clock is a sleek and stylish device, offering plenty of wake-up options and won't stop working in a power outage.

Philips has made a number of great light alarm clocks over the years, but perhaps the best to date is the Philips Wake-Up Light Alarm Clock. The clock is well-designed and stylish, plus it boasts a number of great features to help you both get to sleep and wake up in the morning.

When you're trying to get to sleep, the Philips light clock will help by showing dimming sunset colors and related sounds. Then, before it's time to wake up, it'll gradually fade in a representation of natural light, along with one of five calming wake-up sounds, including birds, Zen garden, a gentle piano, and more.

If you'd prefer, you can even tell the device to instead fade in the FM radio, and there's a tap to snooze feature in case it's still not time to wake up.

Plenty of us have experienced the dread of an alarm clock failing to wake us up because of a power outage, but Philips addresses that issue too with its built-in battery that lasts eight hours before it runs out of juice.

More than 4,300 Amazon customers rated the Philips light clock with a 4-star average — 78% of them giving it 4 or 5 stars. But it's not perfect: It's a little expensive and despite having a speaker, you can't connect to it through Bluetooth to play music from your phone as an alarm. At least, there's that FM radio.

Pros: Well-designed, easy to use, plenty of wake-up options

Cons: Expensive, no Bluetooth support

The best budget clock

The ToToBay Wake Up Light alarm clock offers many of the same features as the others on this list but at a far lower price.

The clocks on this list have a lot to offer, but beyond that, they also have something else in common — they're a little pricey. If you're looking for a wake-up light alarm clock that's a little cheaper, then the ToToBay Wake Up Light alarm clock may the best one for you.

The ToToBay Wake Up Light alarm clock may be inexpensive, but it still has some nice options. For example, you can choose between seven colors and 10 levels of brightness for your sunrise light. There are also six natural sounds and an FM radio to choose from, plus, 15 levels of volume for those sounds. And, for added convenience, the clock has a USB port on the back.

Of course, like everything, you do get what you pay for. Buyers have reported a few different issues with the alarm clock, including some build quality issues. Still, there aren't many other options out there for under $30, and the competition in this price range seems to be far worse than this device.

Pros: Inexpensive, plenty of options

Cons: Some build quality issues, no accompanying app

The best with a music speaker

The iHome Zenergy offers a number of great light alarm features, but it also has a pretty great Bluetooth speaker built into it.

While some of the other devices on this list double as Bluetooth speakers, most of them treat the speaker as more of a tool for the alarm than as an actual music-listening speaker. The iHome Zenergy, however, is for music specifically.

Let's start with the alarm itself, which boasts a number of great features. For example, the light on the device is 360-degrees and allows for a range of different colors to fit your mood. The alarm comes with 10 naturally-recorded environmental and white sound noises to keep you relaxed as you go to sleep and wake up. Last but not least, the device has a USB port on the back to help you charge your device next to your bed.

Perhaps one of the best reasons to buy this device is the fact that it doubles as a Bluetooth speaker, and it sounds pretty good for a device in this price range. That's good news for those of you who want to use the speaker not just to wake you up, but also to play music for other reasons.

There are some downsides to the iHome Zenergy. For starters, while it doubles as a Bluetooth speaker, the Bluetooth is sometimes a little spotty. Still, the device has an auxiliary port, if you can't deal with the spotty Bluetooth. On top of that, some find the range of sounds to be a little limiting.

Pros: Well-designed, has a nice speaker, USB charging

Cons: A little pricey, spotty Bluetooth

The best for total darkness

If you're someone who likes to sleep in pitch dark, you'll love the dimmable clock and options of the Lumie Bodyclock 250.

While wake-up light alarm clocks offer a number of benefits, some of them blast a bright light in your face by showing the time during the night. The Lumie Bodyclock Active 250 attempts to alleviate that issue by allowing users to dim the display as much as they want with two buttons on the front of the device.

Of course, beyond simply having a dimmable display, the Lumie Bodyclock Active 250 offers a number of other great features. It allows you to choose when the "sunrise" starts, so you can set when the clock should start the fade-in process if it would be helpful.

Like the other clocks on this list, the Lumie Bodyclock 250 has some options. For example, there are five sounds you can choose from to wake up to, or you can use the built-in FM radio. You even have six language choices.

Despite a 59% satisfaction rating, one common complaint from Amazon customers is that the clock is difficult to set up, and the instructions are unhelpful. If you don't need the features of this clock, you may be better served by our other picks.

Pros: Dimmable clock, lots of options, easy to use

Cons: Expensive, difficult to set up

Although waking up early for work or school might never be a joy, a good alarm clock makes it easier.

You might be wondering, "Why bother with an alarm clock when I have a phone?" A fair question and many people do wake up to their cell phone's prompting. The problem with this, however, is it makes it far more difficult to put some space between your technology and your sleep, and those are two areas of your life best kept separate.

I tried a teeth-whitening kit that was personalized to my level of sensitivity and discoloration — here's what it’s like

glowup teeth whitening

  • At-home teeth-whitening kits are an affordable and convenient alternative to professional teeth-whitening treatments.
  • The problem is that they can be painful for people with sensitive teeth and aren't specific to any particular type of stains you're concerned with.
  • A new teeth-whitening kit called Glowup ($60) is designed with teeth sensitivity in mind and uses whitening agents that are personalized to your teeth.
  • It's quick and effective: each treatment takes just 16 minutes and can yield up to eight shades of difference in brightness after a week of use.

A smile changes everything. That's probably why we're always looking to improve our smiles, whether through teeth straightening services, oral care subscriptions like electric toothbrushes, and teeth-whitening products.

If you're someone who's looked into at-home teeth-whitening solutions, you'll know that they're cheaper and more convenient than professional treatments, but they can also be painful or ineffective, and depending on the design, still expensive and inconvenient.

A new startup called Glowup is making one of the most affordable and innovative teeth-whitening solutions. Glowup's teeth-whitening kit combines a whitening agent personalized to the user's teeth sensitivity and discoloration level with a 16-minute light treatment to deliver pain-free and noticeable results. It costs $60 and is available only on its website.

glowup teeth whitening 5

Prior to starting Glowup, CEO David Tao tried nearly every type of teeth-whitening product on the market, but most experiences caused unbearable pain for his sensitive teeth. Direct-to-consumer brands like Harry's and Dollar Shave Club inspired him to create a new teeth-whitening concept. He says, "I noticed remarkable similarities between the shaving and teeth-whitening experience: controlled by large players, high mark-ups, terrible in-store buying experience, and paralysis of choice."

Glowup further differentiates itself in the teeth-whitening space with its personalization process. Tao says, "The hypothesis [is] that if a product is personalized, it can be pain-free and effective for everyone."

The Glowup team is currently comprised entirely of current UC Berkeley students and recent graduates. In the short amount of time since its launch (April 2019), it has secured angel funding from the founders of Curology, as well as a seed grant from a student fund at Berkeley's Haas School of Business.

I tried out this new teeth-whitening kit to see if it was really as simple and effective as it seemed.

What it's like to use Glowup to whiten your teeth

First, you need to visit Glowup's website to take a short quiz that will determine the type of whitening agent you receive in your kit. The questionnaire asks about your brushing and flossing habits, your level of teeth sensitivity, and how often you consume stain-causing food and drinks, such as coffee.

The kit you receive in the mail will look like the below. Each kit includes a whitening light in the form of a mouthpiece, two USB adapters, three customized whitening gels, and a user guide.

glowup teeth whitening 2

Like SmileDirectClub's teeth-whitening kit, the mouthpiece is powered by your phone, so there's no need to stand attached to a wall. You can use it any time you have your phone on you.

To use the kit, I applied the gel to the top and bottom of the mouthpiece, placed it in my mouth, plugged it into my phone's charger port, and pressed the "on" button. Wearing the light isn't exactly the most natural position to hold your mouth, but overall the experience isn't too uncomfortable and it only lasts 16 minutes. The light automatically turns off once the treatment is completed.

glowup teeth whitening 3

Glowup uses the same enamel-safe whitening agent as dentists, plus natural, anti-inflammatory ingredients like chamomile and aloe leaf to prevent against sensitivity and pain. My teeth are a little sensitive, and I experienced no pain while using Glowup's whitening kit.

The results of my testing process

The three gels should last six to nine treatments (about a week's supply). Glowup suggests using its kit every day until you reach your desired result. I try to avoid some of the worst teeth-staining offenders like coffee and red wine, so my teeth aren't too obviously discolored, but I still have always wished my teeth were whiter.

I'll admit I wasn't good about consistently using the kit at the recommended daily interval, and I was closer to a couple times a week. However, I still saw results and improvements in the color and brightness of my teeth. Depending on the level you start at, Glowup says customers can see up to eight shades of difference in brightness after a week of use.

The bottom line

Overall, Glowup's teeth-whitening kit was easy to use and really works. Though less convenient than teeth-whitening strips, it didn't intrude too much on my weekly personal care routine, and it's more affordable than other light treatment whitening kits. I also loved that it was customized to my specific needs, not just a general catch-all product. If you have sensitive teeth and have been let down by other teeth-whitening kits out there, it's time to try Glowup

  • You can delete backups on a Mac by using the Finder or your computer's Time Machine, in tandem with your external hard drive.
  • Keeping backups of your data is a useful and necessary part of owning a computer, but at a certain point it's also a good idea to delete excessive backups to make room for new ones.

Google Groups is a platform where you can bring people together to have discussions, host question and answer sessions, organize emails, and more.

It's great for team projects, classmates, departments, or any other group of people who need to work together in an organized space.

While the feature can be very convenient, if you create a Google Group for a temporary project, you may eventually want to delete it to free up space on your page.

After you delete a group, it will not show up in search results, or in the Google Groups directory. Be careful, however, as once you delete a Google Group, there is no way that it can be restored.

Here's how to delete a Google Group that you no longer need:

How to delete a Google Group

1. Sign in to Google Groups using the Google profile that owns the Google Group you are trying to delete.

2. Click on "My Groups" at the top of the menu on the left side of the screen.

NOW WATCH: I cleaned my entire apartment with 4 of Amazon's highest-rated cleaning robots, but I could've done a much better job myself

I'm a CEO with ADHD, and it's my biggest strength. Here's why.

$

0

Joe De Sena

  • Joe De Sena is the founder and CEO of Spartan, the world's largest obstacle race and endurance brand. He is also the New York Times best-selling author of "Spartan Up" and "Spartan Fit," and recently released his third book, "The Spartan Way."
  • As someone with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), De Sena has found it to be his greatest strength as an entrepreneur.
  • He says that his ADHD helped him pursue his own dreams, and he can't imagine living any other way. For him, a challenge is a new opportunity for achieving success.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is, without a doubt, my greatest strength. It's a major reason why I bounce off the walls until I find something important to focus on.

The kid who "can't sit still," the guy who seems distant in conversation, the entrepreneur obsessed with one idea: I'm all of these things, but I don't see them as negatives in the least.

My most obvious symptom: hyperfocus

What is ADHD? It's more complex than just a kid who can't sit still. ADHD is a brain disorder marked by an ongoing pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity/impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development.

Symptoms include overlooking or missing details, an inability to listen, organizational issues, forgetfulness, and being easily distracted. My most obvious symptom? Hyperfocus.

Honestly, I view this "symptom" as a home-run trait. Sure, my mind has trouble sticking to one thing, but that means I don't ruminate on irrelevant ideas or spend more than a minute feeling negative. My hyperfocus allows me to actually keep my attention on the things that move the needle each day. ADHD — and my hyperfocus — helped me leave my job on Wall Street to pursue my dream of ripping 1 million people off the couch. As it turns out, evolution helped me do this.

How the hyperfocus trait evolved

Take it from Thom Hartmann, author of "The Edison Gene: ADHD and the Gift of the Hunter Child."

Hartmann claims that, in hunter-gatherer cultures, hunters needed hyperfocus more than gatherers. He implies that the ADHD hyperfocus trait provided a selective advantage in the past.

This might not make sense to you, because ADHD and a "lack of focus" are generally perceived as negatives. But think about it for a second. The hunter scanned the environment, looking and waiting for something to focus on. Are you a hunter or a gatherer? Which would you rather be?

I know I'm a hunter, and this gene intensifies my inclination to act on ideas that I'm scanning. My supposed "disorder" led me to create Spartan, the Spartan Up Podcast, and the SpartanX Leadership Forum

When I'm hyperfocused on one idea, I make it great. I only ruminate on what truly matters, leaving all the irrelevant noise behind. So why would I see ADHD as a "weakness?" I can't imagine living any other way.

Why my ADHD is a blessing

Without the hyperfocus trait, I'd lack creativity, spontaneity, and a fast-paced lifestyle essential for entrepreneurship. It's the reason I'm successful, and it's why ADHD is my greatest strength.

I'm a firm believer that we should all admire the things about our challenges that make us who we are. No, I can't sit for too long, but that's why I'm fit. No, I don't always think before I act, but that's why I'm direct and honest with everyone I meet. No, I didn't learn as well as others in the traditional classroom setting, but that's why I have gritty determination to succeed.

My advice to you: Tell yourself that every challenge is an opportunity to achieve success. Turn your struggle into triumph. Transform your "disorder" into an advantage.

Now stop reading, log onto LinkedIn, and tell me which "weakness" you're grateful for.

How to connect a wireless mouse to your Mac computer in 2 different ways

  • You can connect a wireless mouse to your Mac in a few different ways, the two most common being via Bluetooth or via a USB dongle.
  • Depending on the type of mouse you have, you may need to sync your wireless mouse using your Mac's Bluetooth menu.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Messy cords on a desk can strike a negative chord with today's workforce, making a wireless mouse a welcome change from the wired alternative. Aside from aesthetics, a wireless mouse just moves and feels so much better than a wired one.

There are two common types of wireless mice, and the way you'll connect yours to a Mac depends on which type you have.

A RF mouse operates off of radio frequencies, and requires you to simply plug a USB dongle into your Mac. Make sure the mouse is powered on and within range, and you should be able to use it within the minute — there shouldn't be any real syncing process required.

A Bluetooth-enabled wireless mouse without a dongle, however, requires you to first sync the mouse with your Mac

'Why does my Apple Watch keep locking?': How to stop your Apple Watch from locking when it shouldn't

$
0
0

smart watch apple watch

  • If your Apple Watch keeps locking when you take it off, that's normal behavior — it's a security measure to make sure no one else can use it.
  • If your Watch locks while you're still wearing it, there are a number of ways to fix it, including adjusting the way you wear it, checking some settings, and cleaning the sensor.
  • Here are five things you can do to keep your Apple Watch from locking when you don't want it to.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Your Apple Watch is designed to lock when it's not on your wrist — this way, no one can access any of the personal information on your Watch, or use Apple Pay to make fraudulent purchases.

That means you should only need to enter your unlock code perhaps once a day: when you wake up and put your Apple Watch on in the morning.

But some people find that their Watch unexpectedly locks while it's still on their wrist, requiring them to enter the code even though they've been wearing it.

If you encounter this problem, here are some ways to solve this issue.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Apple Watch Series 5 (From $429 at Best Buy)

SEE ALSO: The best iPhone accessories from cases to lightning cables

Make sure wrist detection and unlocking are properly set on your Apple Watch

1. Start the Watch app on your iPhone.

2. On the My Watch tab, tap "Passcode."

3. Turn on "Wrist Detection" by swiping the button to the right.

4. Make sure that the passcode is turned on — you should see "Turn Passcode Off" at the top of the screen. If not, tap "Turn Passcode On" and enter a passcode on the watch when directed.

Check that you're wearing the Apple Watch correctly

You should also be sure that you aren't wearing your Apple Watch too loosely. If there's a gap between the watch band and your skin, the watch can lose contact with you for a few seconds, which is all it takes for the watch to lock. You don't need to make it uncomfortably tight, but it should be snug.

In addition, although this isn't confirmed by Apple, some users have reported that the watch locks if it's worn too far up the arm, above the wrist bone. If you're having issues, try wearing it closer to (or ahead of) the wrist bone.

Clean the back of the watch

If the sensors on the back of the Watch are dirty, it can lose track of your wrist and lock itself.

Try cleaning the watch by dampening it with water and then wiping with a non-abrasive cloth (like a microfiber cloth).

For more information on how to properly clean your Apple Watch, check out our article, "How to properly clean your Apple Watch, including its band and Digital Crown."

Restart your watch and iPhone

If all else fails, try to restart both your watch and iPhone, and then turn them back on — turn your phone on first. After the phone is fully restarted, turn on the Apple Watch

For instructions on how to do this, read the articles "How to restart and force-restart any iPhone model" and "How to turn your Apple Watch on and off, and force-restart it for troubleshooting."

Get your Apple Watch serviced

If none of those issues resolve your problem, it's likely that your watch has suffered a sensor failure.

Contact Apple customer service to get the watch tested by an Apple technician, and then repaired or replaced.

The best men's watches under $500

  • Watches are a very personal and complex purchasing decision, and they can be expensive.
  • We've rounded up the best men's watches under $500 from top brands like Casio, Tissot, Diesel, Seiko, and more.
  • You can also check out our guide to the best men's watches under $100.

Watches are a very personal and complex purchasing decision. It's also potentially a very expensive decision, as the world's biggest watchmaking names — and the watches we often most desire — can cost tens of thousands of dollars or even hundreds of thousands.

While those expensive watches are the playthings of the rich, you can still make the right impression by spending $500 or less, and we've collected eight of the best watches you can get for this reasonable amount of money. Because watches often reflect your personality and style, we've not limited our list to one watch type, and instead looked for watches that have some horological history and come from names that will be familiar to many watch fans.

I have been wearing and reviewing watches for four years, and am a regular attendee of the Baselworld watch show that takes place annually in Switzerland. I have worn, own, or have owned watches made by all the vast majority of the manufacturers chosen below, and consider them the perfect mix of value, style, ability, and desirability.

I chose the Casio G-Shock GMW-G5000D-1 as the best overall due to the unusual combination of ultimate durability and its ability to look great with almost any outfit, along with special high-tech features for those that want it, and even reliable solar power.

Here the best men's watches under $500:

The best watch for under $500 overall

With its retro appeal, high-tech features, and hugely stylish design, the Full Metal G-Shock GMW-G5000D-1 is also practically indestructible.

Introduced in 2018 to commemorate G-Shock's 35th anniversary, then continued on as a completely new product line, the so-called Full Metal G-Shock G5000D is inspired by the classic D5000 Casio G-Shocks of the '80s, only this time wrapped up in a fabulous metal frame.

The stainless steel version I picked is the most versatile in terms of accessorizing, although a very blingy gold model is also available for $550, along with others with different straps and colors too.

This is a high-end G-Shock watch, so it's water resistant to 200 meters, dust and shock proof, and is powered by solar cells. It's practically impossible to break, and there's no battery to replace, making it very easy to live with — you simply never have to worry about it. It has Bluetooth to connect with an app on your phone, making it simple to change timezones, set timers, and even check the solar power reserve. The app works with Android and iOS, is beautifully designed, and operates flawlessly.

The metal bracelet is well designed, not just ensuring its strength, but also neatly avoiding the pain of links catching hairs on your arm too. The steel body upgrades the classic, familiar design of the plastic original, elevating the watch to classy new heights that mean it goes with a wealth of different outfits. It's as happy paired with a suit as it is jeans and a T-Shirt. The Casio G-Shock GMW-G5000D-1 is showy without being a show-off, and singles you out as in-the-know, without being a know-it-all. Perfect.

Pros: Stylish, durable, feature-packed, and suitable for all occasions

Cons: Quite heavy, retro design won't appeal to everyone

The best diver’s watch under $500

The Seiko Prospex SNE 498P9 has true diving credentials, historical significance in the Seiko range, and reliable solar power.

Known as the Seiko Tuna, due to the body's resemblance to a tuna can, this is a modern take on a classic Seiko diving watch, available at a fraction of the price the originals command.

At 47mm the body sounds large, but it's more wearable than you expect, due to the angled lugs and the iconic shroud minimizing the overall size.

Water resistant to 200 meters, the bezel rotates in either direction, and there's a date window on the face. The body is made from stainless steel, the band is silicone, and the face is covered in Seiko's own Hardlex material for scratch resistance. The solar power has a reserve of 10 months, making it great for casual wearers or those who wear different watches on a regular basis.

We selected the gold and black model, as it recalls the Tuna models from the '80s, but Seiko also has "Street" design models in matte colors — including grey, green, and blue — that are more modern looking. Regardless of which you choose, the Seiko Tuna will be appreciated by divers, watch fans, and fashion lovers alike.

Pros: Solar power, water resistant, classic style, various color schemes available

Cons: Large body, quirky styling

The best military watch under $500

With its true military credentials, the Luminox Leatherback Giant Sea Turtle watch is lightweight, hardwearing, and very good-looking.

The US Navy Seals, the US Coast Guard, various SWAT teams, and military groups around the world wear Luminox watches. If that's not a serious credential and recognition of a watch's toughness, we don't know what is. Why? Luminox watches are a superb combination of high visibility displays, and strong, lightweight bodies.

Luminox uses its own Carbonox material for strength and its Luminox always-on lighting that doesn't need a button push to activate. Why did we choose the Leatherback Sea Turtle Giant? The black and orange color scheme is key to its appeal, appearing both tough and sleek at the same time, with the orange highlights giving the watch some character.

You really have to hold the Leatherback Giant Sea Turtle to understand how light the 50-gram weight really is — it disappears on your arm and is wearable day and night.

The 44mm body isn't too big, the strap is pliable and comfortable, and the battery inside will last for 50 months before it needs replacing. The Luminox provides military standards where it matters, without any of the associated utilitarian looks.

Pros: Water resistant, highly visibly face in the dark, lightweight

Cons: Overly masculine style

The best Swiss Made sports watch under $500

Zodiac is a Swiss watch brand with a long history, but it still manages to combine classic styling with modern twists.

Currently owned by Fossil, Zodiac is a Swiss watch brand with a long history, which still manages to combine classic styling with modern twists, mostly through the available color schemes. We aspire to own one of the stunning $1,500-plus Super Sea Wolf models, but luckily the brand's Grandrally sports watches come in under our $500 budget.

The 41mm x 48mm body is a beauty, and incredibly easy to wear on a daily basis. We chose the brown ribbed leather strap version with the sunray blue and silver face — an in-style combination for 2019. The chronograph is also available in other colors with different straps, but if you want a metal link bracelet, the watch will cost more than $500.

The motorsport-look isn't really backed up by actual heritage in the same way as a Tag Heuer watch can claim, but the Zodiac Grandrally's less showy design means it should appeal to those who want the Swiss Made label without the expected price tag, and attached to a slightly dressier style.

Pros: Silver and blue color scheme is desirable in 2019, quartz reliability, sleek body that won't overpower small wrists

Cons: Lacks actual sporting heritage

The best dress watch for all occasions under $500

The Tissot Tradition T-Classic is a watch that goes with anything, on almost any wrist, for almost every occasion.

The Tissot Tradition T-Classic was so close to being our top overall pick, but the G-Shock's toughness saw it knocked into second place, as the beautiful minimalist style makes it suitable to wear with anything, at any time.

Despite the dressy look, its simplicity means it won't overpower a jeans-and-oxford-shirt combo, while still being capable of adding the required classy touch to a suit. The versatility makes this one of the only watches you really need to own.

There are nine different Tissot Tradition models. We have chosen the T-Classic with a silver dial and polished metal link bracelet. For a little less of a flashy look, opt for the black leather strap with a silver face or a black face with silver hands. The 42mm stainless steel body contains a quartz movement, and the face is covered by sapphire crystal for protection and a stunning sheen.

Tissot watches have masses of heritage, the all-important Swiss Made label on the face, and are surprisingly affordable given the style and quality. It's tempting to go for one of Tissot's many other more bold designs, but don't dismiss the T-Classic — its simple style is what makes it so classy, and so endlessly wearable. We'd call it timeless, but that would give the wrong impression.

Pros: Goes with almost every smart outfit, timeless design, water resistant to 30m, various styles available

Cons: Not a casual style

The best watch for summer under $500

The Big Bold has a chunky 47mm case that's ready to make a statement, but it's also effortlessly casual and stylish.

You'll be able to afford some of our other watches featured here alongside the Big Bold Swatch, as it costs just $100. Unlike the classic Swatch look, the Big Bold has a large 47mm case that's ready to not only make a statement, but also follow the trend for large watches. It's definitely chunky, but typically Swatch in that it's effortlessly casual and stylish.

Introduced for 2019, the Big Bold design is enhanced by some great little additions. We love the arrow minute and hour hands, the newly designed case back, and the textured silicone strap. The watch has a character of its own while remaining an obvious Swatch timepiece, and all the Swiss street-cred that goes along with it.

This is a Swatch, so it comes in various different colors, although we've highlighted the blue model here.

If you're quick, there are limited edition collaboration versions made with fashion brand A Bathing Ape. There are six Big Bold models, with five based on a city — Tokyo, London, Paris, Bern, and New York — plus a world model too. If you miss out, don't worry, the standard editions still look great.

Perfect for your summer outfit, the Big Bold Swatch can join another dressier watch as the basis of a collection.

Pros: Great color choice, reasonably priced, bold design

Cons: Casual style not suitable for all outfits

The best designer watch under $500

If you're going to wear a designer watch, you may as well make a statement, and that's exactly what the Diesel Mega Chief does. Get the blue denim version for the complete Diesel look.

Almost every fashion brand out there makes watches too, but few have adopted such a striking and instantly recognizable style as Diesel. We're not choosing the enormous Mr. Daddy 2.0 design here, but its slightly more manageable cousin, the Mega Chief.

Make no mistake, it's still massive at 51mm, but it captures the same in-your-face style as the 57mm Mr. Daddy without the total wrist dominance.

The DZ4511 is our choice. Diesel is synonymous with denim, and the denim strap option is a must-have, especially paired with the stainless steel body, clean white face, and blue highlights. While the Mega Chief won't go that well with your suit (just try getting it under a shirt cuff, we dare you), it goes with just about everything else, and the fresh color scheme is extremely summery.

Just because it's a designer watch, doesn't mean you lose out on features. It's a chronograph, has water resistance up to 10ATM, and there's a date window too. You can wear it, and not lose out on the crucial watch features. Just remember, this is a really big watch, and it's going to get noticed.

Pros: Instantly recognizable, cool summer style

Cons: It's big, really big

The best automatic watch under $500

The Nodus Retrospect II looks like it costs a lot more than it does, but it still delivers on quality.

Let's make this clear from the start — it's the Aurora Green model you want. The stunning gree color is a trend seen elsewhere in the watch world this year, and it stands out as modern, stylish, and individual. It's a beauty. However, if it's really not for you, Nodus, a Los Angeles-based watch brand, offers several other tempting styles.

The Retrospect 2 is Nodus' follow-up to the original Retrospect diver's watch, and it's improved in all the right places.

It still uses a Seiko automatic movement for reliability (the NH35A) and has an inwardly sloping bezel, this time matched with a stunning sunburst face and a stainless steel body. It comes with both a metal bracelet and a silicone strap, ready for diving. The watch is water resistant to 200 meters. Over the face is a double-layer piece of sapphire crystal.

That's already impressive, but then add in the little things — the ceramic bezel insert has a lume finish, just like the logo on the face, plus it comes in its own watch roll — along with a watch face that's not too busy, but still suitable for telling the time, and you've got a highly desirable automatic watch for under $500.

Just remember, automatic watches need to be worn in order to gain power, so if you leave the watch for some time, it may need adjusting when you get to wear it again.

Pros: Classic diver design, Seiko automatic movement, choice of colors

Cons: Automatic movement won't be for everyone

What else we considered

Timex Allied Coastline ($99)

Competitively priced, attractive, and available in a selection of colors, there's a lot to like about the Timex Allied Coastline. It almost made the cut, but it was knocked out due to us already featuring diver-style watches several times on the list. However, the low $100 price means you can still pick it up in addition to several other watches on our list.

Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical ($495)

Hamilton is an established brand that makes some truly stunning watches. However, $500 is the lowest you'll pay for a Hamilton watch, and it only gets you the rather ordinary looking Khaki Field Mechanical. Yes, you get the quality and the name; but you can get more for your money provided you aren't swayed by the brand.

Seiko Prospex SNE435P1 ($395)

The wonderfully versatile Seiko Prospex SNE435, and its many similar alternatives, was beaten out by the SNE498 as our diver's pick. Why? The SNE435 is a true classic, and is so simple to personalize with a NATO strap; but the SNE498 is just that little bit more individual without changing the strap. Plus, the new street colors means it attracts a larger audience, and we already have other classic diver's watches on the list.

The best thermal gloves

  • A good pair of thermal gloves can make all the difference on a cold winter day.
  • The Ozero Thermal -20°F Suede Winter Gloves are our top pick because they are affordable, offer unisex sizing, and will keep your hands warm even when temperatures drop below zero.

We may be halfway through winter already, but for many parts of the US, it just keeps getting colder. If the cold snap is taking you by surprise and your old dollar store stretchy gloves aren't keeping your fingers warm enough, you need a new pair of gloves.

Thermal gloves are the warmest type of glove because they typically have an insulated inside with an outer shell built to protect your hands from the elements. Whether you are planning a fun ski trip or will be just stuck shoveling snow this winter, these thermal gloves will keep frostbite at bay.

We did the research to find the best thermal gloves you can buy to keep your hands nice and toasty for the rest of this winter and for many more winters to come.

Here are the best thermal gloves you can buy:

Updated on 10/08/2019 by Caitlin Petreycik: Updated formatting, links, and prices.

The best unisex gloves overall

If you are looking for thermal gloves that are affordable and warm, the Ozero Thermal -20°F Suede Leather Winter Gloves are your best bet.

The Ozero Thermal -20°F Suede Leather Winter Gloves feature five layers of materials to keep your hands warm and dry in below freezing temperatures. The outer layers of polar fleece and waterproof TPU provide thermal retention and moisture wicking, while the middle firm sponge layer keeps the shape of the glove intact.

The inner layers include Heatlok insulated cotton and TR thermal cotton, which both ensure your hands stay warm  — even when the temperature drops down to  -20°F. The gloves also feature a windproof cuff at the wrist that prevents cold air from creeping inside.

The deerskin suede leather gloves are made with a solid grip, so they're the perfect winter accessory for partaking in cold weather activities or even just driving on a brisk winter morning. The gloves come in sizes small to extra large, so they should fit both men and women.

The gloves have a 4-star rating on Amazon with more than 830 reviews. Most buyers report that they are true to size, high quality, warm gloves.

Pros: Affordable, warm, true to size, waterproof, unisex, good grip

Cons: Some female reviewers mention fingers of gloves may be slightly too long for women with small hands

The best men's gloves

The Carhartt Men's W.P Waterproof Insulated Gloves are an affordable pair of gloves that are insulated, waterproof, and made to last.

There's a reason why the clothing brand Carhartt is synonymous with durable outdoor apparel, as it has been producing high-quality outerwear and accessories since 1889. Carhartt's Men's W.P. Waterproof Insulated Gloves are no exception to the rule.

The gloves are made with a long-lasting polytex shell that features a FastDry lining to wick away moisture as you use them, so you can say goodbye to sweaty palms.

One thing to keep in mind: Some Amazon reviewers say they aren't the most practical option if you plan on working outdoors in cold temperatures because they are too bulky to pick up small items such as nuts and bolts. The gloves come in three different colors including black, gray, and brown.

Pros: Affordable, waterproof, insulated, moisture wicking

Cons: Slightly too bulky for working outside with small materials

The best women's gloves

The North Face Women's Etip Gloves will keep your hands warm and let you use your phone at the same time.

If you want to be able to check your phone without removing your gloves, try The North Face Women's Etip Gloves. These tech-friendly gloves are perfect for women who still like to stay connected while enjoying the great outdoors.

Your hands will stay warm and toasty as you scroll through Facebook, thanks to the gloves' Etip thumb and index finger. The gloves also feature extra silicone grip on the palm, so your hands won't slip as you scroll, ski, or shovel.

The sturdy gloves use a lock clip system, so you can store them together and you'll never have to worry about losing one. There are several colors to choose from including purple, gray, and pink.

Pros: Tech-friendly, warm, good grip, variety of colors to choose from

Cons: Slightly expensive

The best for outdoor activities

The Vbiger Winter Warm Touch Screen Gloves are a great tech-friendly pair of unisex gloves that offer warmth and mobility for outdoor sports.

If you like to stay active outdoors even in the wintertime, you need to find a pair of gloves that will not only offer warmth but also dexterity. Look no further than the Vbiger Winter Warm Touch Screen Gloves. These gloves are designed for winter outdoor sports like snowboarding, skiing, climbing, running, and more.

The gloves are made with windproof, fast-drying, and breathable materials to keep hands moisture free. They also feature anti-skid palm patches for a better grip. The slip-on cuff fits comfortably on the wrist without inhibiting movements.

The thumb and pointer finger feature a sensitive touchscreen function to allow you to track your outdoor workouts on your phone. Amazon reviewers love how warm the gloves are, but many wish they were waterproof, too.

While the gloves are made to be short and cut off on the wrist to allow for increased mobility, some buyers are hoping the brand will come out with a longer pair to keep wrists warm as well.

Pros: Unisex, great for outdoor activities, warm, affordable, tech-friendly

Cons: Not waterproof, not long enough for some

The best work gloves

If your job requires you to work outdoors during the winter, the Ergodyne ProFlex 817WP Thermal Waterproof Utility Gloves have the dexterity you need.

Made with 40g 3M Thinsulate insulation and a Hipora water and windproof breathable liner, the Ergodyne ProFlex 817WP Thermal Waterproof Utility Gloves are highly rated gloves for those who work outside in the cold winter months.

The padded spandex back and neoprene knuckle pad offer cushioning for extra comfort, while the terrycloth panel on the thumb allows you to wipe sweat from your brow as you work. The flexible gloves have the full range of dexterity that you need when you are on the job.

Some Amazon reviewers noted sizing was not consistent and recommend checking the size chart before buying, though.

Pros: Waterproof, insulated, breathable liner, extra cushioning

Cons: Tricky sizing

The best affordable women's gloves

Super warm gloves don't have to be super bulky, and the Il Caldo Thicker Warmer Weather gloves prove it.

Just because the weather has taken a turn for the worse doesn't mean that your sense of style has to do the same. Il Caldo's Thicker Warmer Weather gloves for women are not only extremely warm, but also quite elegant. Let's just say that these are gloves you won't be embarrassed to be seen in.

Lined with both cotton and wool, these gloves are surprisingly warm, and fantastic at insulating your hands against the snow and wind. There are a number of different styles available, but all feature unique details that allow these gloves to stand a cut above the rest when it comes to aesthetics. Whether it comes in the form of faux fur lining or a few buttons along the wrist, the Il Caldo offerings combine form with function.

Thanks to the wool and cotton construction, you can actually run these gloves through the wash without worrying about ripping them to shreds. I was pleasantly surprised to find that even after a few cycles, these gloves did not shrink, nor did they lose their ability to keep my hands cozy. The gloves also feature touchscreen tips, though like many other gloves, this functionality is somewhat touch and go (no pun intended).

Il Caldo offers these gloves in three distinct colors, and at less than $9 a pair, you could easily stock up on all of them. — Lulu Chang

Pros: Three elegant colors to choose from, warm, machine-washable, touchscreen tips

Cons: These gloves are warm enough for city life, but certainly not suited for the arctic circle

The best Gore-Tex gloves

If you're looking to survive subzero conditions with all your fingers intact, Burton Gore Tex gloves are the way to go.

The best invention of the last few decades may just be Gore-Tex. The waterproof, breathable fabric has the unique ability to block liquids while allowing water vapor to pass through, making for a dry, comfortable environment. When it comes to keeping your hands cozy and protected in seriously harsh conditions (wind, snow, sleet), one of the best options is the Burton Gore-Tex glove.

Gore-Tex makes up the membrane of this glove, which ensures that it's waterproof, but Burton also includes an integrated Thermocore layer of insulation for extra warmth. The outside of the glove is made from a double layer of DryRide Ultrashell fabric, which is windproof and waterproof, but will still let your hands breathe.

If you're looking to do work in these gloves, that's possible too thanks to the Sticky Icky technology in the palms that allow you to grip onto ski poles, shovels, or your significant other's hand.

One of my favorite things about the Burton Gore-Tex glove is that it's essentially three gloves in one. The fleece liner on the interior of the glove is removable, which means that you can either wear just the fleece, just the outer shell, or put them both together for days when it's especially chilly out. If you opt to wear the fleece on its own, you can take advantage of its touchscreen technology (though to be fair, I've often had trouble using my smartphone without fully de-gloving).

Sizes are available from extra small to extra large, so both guys and gals will be able to buy and enjoy a pair. — Lulu Chang

Pros: Incredibly warm, waterproof yet breathable, Sticky Icky palm technology allows for great grip

Cons: At $70, these gloves are somewhat expensive

The best places to buy scarves online

Your choice of scarf can make or break your comfort level in the wintertime. Opt for one that's wooly and warm and you'll be toasty. Choose a too-thin fabric and you, well, won't. Scarves are also a great opportunity to infuse a bit of personality into your winter wardrobe. And when you get bored of your outerwear, you can always pick a new scarf to mix things up.

These five brands are your best bet for warm, attractive options that will keep you cozy all winter long.

Your body loses a significant portion of its heat through your head, so keep yourself warm this winter with a great winter hat.

The winter hat makers we're featuring today offer hats in myriad styles, so once you've narrowed down the type of winter cap you need, you should be able to find several fine options from each brand.

The best mittens you can buy

Mittens keep your hands warmer than gloves, so if it's cold where you live, work, or play, slip a pair on and keep the chill out.

Yes, you will lose a measure of dexterity when choosing mittens versus gloves. But you won't risk losing a finger to frostbite, or simple suffering from frigid digits, to be a bit less dramatic. Today we've lined up some of the best mittens on the market, including mittens for babies, kids, adults, and some specialty pairs, too.

How to change the language on an Apple Watch, and make it differ from the language on your paired iPhone

Apple Watch

  • You can change the language on your Apple Watch using the Language & Region settings of the Watch app to make it display a different language than your paired iPhone.
  • Your Apple Watch is designed to "mirror" the language used on your iPhone, so by default it'll use whichever language is set on that device, but you can make the two devices differ.
  • Once you add languages to the watch, you can switch among them by changing the Preferred Language Order.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Your Apple Watch automatically uses the same display language as your iPhone, so if you want to keep the two devices in sync – both using the same language – you should change the language on your phone, and the change will apply to your watch as well.

To change the language on your iPhone, see our article, "How to change the language on your iPhone, and separately change the language that Siri speaks and understands."

However, you can also change your setting so that your iPhone and Apple Watch display a different language.

Here's how to make the change.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Apple Watch Series 5 (From $429 at Best Buy)

How to change the language on an Apple Watch

1. Start the Watch app on your iPhone.

2. Tap "General."

Apple Watch language settings

3. Tap "Language & Region."

4. Tap "Custom." You should see "new option" appear on the page.

Apple Watch language settings 5. Tap "Watch Language." On the Watch Language page, tap the language you want to switch to.

6. In the pop-up, tap to confirm you want to change to the selected language. Your watch will take a few minutes to update to the new language.

After you add a watch language, it'll appear in the section called Preferred Language Order. To change the language to one of the languages in this list, tap "Edit" at the top of the screen and drag the language you want to use to the top of the list. Or, to return to the same language as your phone, set the Language & Region back to "Mirror my iPhone."

The best men's wallets you can buy

  • Whether you need to carry a ton of cash or prefer mostly cards, Insider Picks has you covered with our guide to the best men's wallets.
  • While our favorite is the Bellroy Slim Sleeve, each wallet on this list fits the bill as one of the best wallets.

I've always been obsessed with finding the "perfect" thing. Whether it's travel shoes, credit cards, flashlights or something else, I've always tried out different versions of each one, returning and getting the next one on my list until I found what best fit my needs and preferences.

Wallets are no exception. I think I've tried out more wallets than I can count. To be fair, it's hard to find a "perfect" wallet for every situation. In the winter when you're wearing a heavy coat, you can keep a hefty wallet in a breast pocket, while in the summer you need something that can fit in the pocket of a pair of jeans or shorts. If you're going to a wedding or meeting, you might want something that keeps a slim profile in a suit, while you might also need something that can fit cash for tipping at a bar or valet.

Meanwhile, where you live, work, and how you commute can make a big difference, too. Do you feel comfortable keeping your wallet in a back pocket, or do you worry about pickpockets? If you live in a city with a metro or commuter rail, do you need something that lets you have quick access to a transit card? Do you travel internationally a lot and need something that can fit foreign currency?

Insider Picks' choice for the number one wallet is the Bellroy Slim Sleeve. Of course, we realize that different people have different needs, so we've researched and tested plenty of other options. Below, take a look at the best men's wallets you can find for less than $100. We've listed choices for all kinds of users, including subway commuters, people who don't use cash that often, and people who want to go full-minimalist with a money clip.

The best men's wallet overall

The gorgeous Bellroy Slim Sleeve Wallet fits everything you need in a slim, efficient profile.

Bellroy is a relatively young company that released its first product in 2010. Founded by a few friends in Australia who set out to design optimal wallets in terms of size and card positioning, Bellroy has since released several different series of wallets for just about any use. You may remember seeing some of those wallets mentioned on Insider Picks before.

The Slim Sleeve is the perfect example of the company's design mission. The wallet is built using Bellroy's "nude" approach, focusing on eliminating as much excess material as possible to keep the profile slim. There are no buckles, trimmings, snaps, buttons or fasteners. The only materials are leather and thread, with as little of each used as possible.

The Slim Sleeve is a bifold that can hold up to 12 cards plus cash. It has a total of four pockets: three for cards, one for bills. Two quick access card slots sit inside the wallet, visible when you just open it. Those slots are perfect for your everyday credit card or commuter pass — I can pull my subway card out without having to take the wallet out of my pocket. The third card pocket sits behind the right-side quick access card

The third card pocket sits behind the right-side quick access card slot and is perfect for less-frequently used cards like an ID, an ATM card, or a couple of backup credit cards. The cards are tucked away out of sight in this pocket, so a pull-tab helps pull them out. Behind the other quick access slot, a cash pocket has plenty of room for bills folded in half or thirds.

As far as materials go, the Slim Sleeve is excellent. Bellroy is a certified "B Corp," a designation given to companies that meet rigorous standards for "social and environmental performance." What this means is that Bellroy sources its leather and materials ethically and sustainably. The leather is high-quality top grain, soft yet sturdy, and comes in several different colors.

While the top review on Amazon suggests that there are quality issues, several members of the Insider Picks team, including myself, have been using the Bellroy Slim Sleeve as a go-to wallet for months or years without a problem. That, combined with the fact that the wallet has 4.5 stars overall and overwhelmingly positive reviews, suggests that one user's experience may have been an anomaly.

Pros: Slim, sleek, holds a lot, ethically sourced leather, simple design

Cons: You have to fold bills to fit them in

The best minimalist wallet

The Nomatic Slim Wallet uses a clever design to hold the basics, takes up as little space as possible, and keeps the essentials easy-to-reach.

Nomatic got its start on Kickstarter when cousins Jon Richards and Jacob Durham designed their minimalist wallet and crowdfunded its production in 2014. The Kickstarter campaign was a runaway success, and they met their fundraising goal of $10,000 in just a few days. By the end of the 30 day pledge period, Richards and Durham had more than 6,100 backers pledging $171,315. Since then, Nomatic has evolved to offer a few different products, as well as expand production.

The Nomatic Slim Wallet has a little more going on than its name might suggest. Built from medical-grade elastic and canvas, it doesn't even look like it can hold a credit card until you stretch it to fit. When it's empty, the wallet looks more or less like a small fabric pouch, with openings on both sides and a pull tab sticking up.

There's a main pocket on top that can fit a stack of credit cards and it's easily accessible by using the pull tab. When you flip the wallet, there's a second pocket for more cards. Next to that slot, there's a smaller, hidden pocket which can be used for cash that's been folded twice or a small object like a key or a few coins.

The key to this wallet is how you load it. Nomatic actually made a video showing you the most efficient way to use it. In each of the two card pockets, it's best to keep your most used cards on the outsides of the stack of cards. That way, you can get to them quickest.

It's worth keeping in mind that the bottom pocket — the one without the pull tab — is easier to get to. When I use this wallet, I put my subway pass and main credit card in this slot. The wallet holds up to 15 cards, and Nomatic suggests putting at least four cards in it so that everything stays secure.

While it's not as minimalist as using a money clip, the package is actually a bit smaller, since you fold bills in half twice when you put them in.

Pros: Minimalist, holds a lot considering it's size, fun colors, easy access with pull tab

Cons: Only holds a little bit of cash, which has to be folded twice

The best wallet for cash

The Rogue Industries Front Pocket Wallet is the same shape as a jeans pocket, so it's comfortable to carry and has a low-profile.

When you first see the Rogue Industries Front Pocket Wallet, you might be a little taken aback. It looks a little bit like a fin or flipper, rather than a wallet. That's because Rogue Industries designed it to fit perfectly in the front pocket of your favorite pair of jeans. Go ahead and put it in your pocket pointing down — you'll see.

Unlike many other front-pocket or minimalist wallets, the Rogue front pocket has a full-sized compartment for cash, meaning you don't have to fold bills before putting them in. This is a big factor to consider. It's always annoying to have to unfold each bill individually and count them up at the register, especially if there's a long line behind you.

Because it's bifold, the wallet has three credit card slots on one side when it's open and an ID window on the opposite side. Each card slot is designed to hold up to two cards. You can always squeeze more in, but the wallet may become stretched out, misshapen, or not close properly.

One nice thing about the Rogue Industries wallet is that it's available in a ton of different styles. There are several different kinds of leather, including bison and alligator, and it also comes in nylon. Many of the choices come with an RFID-blocking material integrated into the construction (if you worry about that). Once you've settled on a material, there are plenty of color options, too.

Pros: Fits comfortably in front pocket, can fit cash without having to fold it

Cons: Relatively limited space for cards

The best wallet for lots of cards

Simple, straightforward, and built to last, the Saddleback Front Pocket wallet will serve you well for years to come.

Sometimes, you aren't looking for anything fancy or complicated. You want something simple, straightforward and guaranteed high quality.

If that sounds like what you're looking for in a wallet, consider the Saddleback Front Pocket ID Wallet. There's no folding or figuring out pockets, nor any kind of ergonomic design for your pockets. Instead, it's a single unit, a small, flat piece of leather designed to be as thin as possible to fit anywhere. With a 100-year warranty, it's built to last.

The Saddleback wallet has pockets on both sides and is constructed from full-grain leather, lined with pigskin, and sewn with marine-grade thread. On one side, the Saddleback wallet has two pockets for credit cards. Once you break the wallet in, each pocket can hold up to five cards. Be careful, though. When you add a new card to a full-grain leather wallet, the pocket stretches and molds to fit the card. That means that if you want to go back to carrying fewer cards, the pocket will be loose and cards may fall out.

When you flip the wallet to its other side, it has a side entry pocket with an ID window. You can also put a transit pass in here — that way, you can easily pull it out while leaving the wallet in your pocket. A slot just above and behind the ID window can hold folded cash or, if you prefer, an extra card or two. There's also a pocket at the top of the wallet which fits cash.

Reviewers on Amazon testify to the wallet's durability, with one person reporting back that after six years, the Saddleback Front Pocket wallet is still holding together well. Keep in mind, as several reviewers point out, that because the leather is so durable, it needs some time to break in. You might not be able to fit ten credit cards in when you first get it.

Pros: Slim, incredibly durable, built to last

Cons: Only fits a small amount of cash, needs to be broken in

The best money clip

More than just a folded piece of metal, the M-Clip V Series will last a long time and will never lose your cash or cards.

Money clips are so simple that you might not realize there is much difference between them. However, which clip you pick can mean the difference between having a money clip that bends or stretches after six months and starts dropping your cash, or one that lasts a lifetime.

The M-Clip V series falls into the latter category. If you're looking for a money clip, you can do no better. More than just a simple folded piece of metal, the V series has an opening mechanism. To add or remove something, you just slide the lever bars back, making the clip look a bit like a clothespin. You pinch them to open the clip, and when you're done, slide them back down to close it.

The V Series money clip is a little bulkier than some flatter clips, but it makes up for that by using a lightweight aircraft grade aluminum. The spring mechanism is made with precision-machined stainless steel and is heat tempered to add to durability. The inside of the clip is padded with Neoprene rubber grips — between these and the opening mechanism, there's virtually no chance of anything falling out of the clip.

M-Clip says you can hold six-to-eight cards and at least eight-to-ten bills, which should be plenty for any need. According to several people who use the clip, even if you regularly stuff a lot into it, the clip doesn't lose tension later when you're carrying less. Reviewers also swear by M-Clip's customer service— if you're unhappy with your clip for any reason, M-Clip is happy to work with you to fix the problem.

Pros: Minimalist, holds a lot, well-built, great customer service

Cons: Bulkier than some money clips

Rebekah Vardy and Colleen Rooney

Coleen Rooney may be set for a career as an investigative journalist after her detective work apparently weeded out who was leaking her "false" private Instagram stories to a British tabloid.

Rooney, the wife of the DC United forward Wayne Rooney, said on social media on Wednesday that several of her private stories, including one about "gender selection" treatment in Mexico, had been sent to The Sun without her permission.

Rooney said she had identified the culprit: Rebekah Vardy, the wife of the Leicester City and England striker Jamie Vardy.

Rooney wrote in an Instagram post: "For a few years now someone who I trusted to follow me on my personal Instagram account has been consistently informing The SUN newspaper of my private posts and stories."

She added: "To try and prove this, I came up with an idea. I blocked everyone from viewing my Instagram stories except ONE account."

This has been a burden in my life for a few years now and finally I have got to the bottom of it......

A post shared by Coleen Rooney (@coleen_rooney) on Oct 9, 2019 at 2:29am PDT on

Rooney said that for five months she "posted a series of false stories to see if they made their way into the Sun newspaper."

"And you know what, they did!" she said. "The story about gender selection in Mexico, the story about returning to TV and then the latest story about the basement flooding in my new house."

She added: "Now I know for certain which account / individual it's come from. I have saved and screenshotted all the original stories which clearly show just one person has viewed them.

"It's ... Rebekah Vardy's account."

Shortly after Rooney published her post, Vardy responded with a post of her own, denying the accusation.

"I wish you had called me if you thought this," she said. "I never speak to anyone about you as various journalists who have asked me to over the years can vouch for."

She added: "I liked you a lot Coleen & I'm so upset that you have chosen to do this, especially when I'm heavily pregnant."

Vardy is consulting her legal team about the accusation, her spokeswoman told The Independent.

The Sun did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment regarding the "false" stories it published.

Angry Instagram users are leaving 1-star reviews on the wrong Threads app on Google's app store

Mark Zuckerberg

  • Facebook released an app for Instagram last week, called Threads, that's made for quick photo-sharing and instant-messaging with those on your Close Friends list.
  • However, searching for "Threads" on the app stores for both Android and iOS devices has led some users to mistake a same-named workplace communication app for the new Instagram platform.
  • The workplace Threads app has since been hit with several one-star reviews, but has also seen its download numbers boost six times over.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Instagram's over 1 billion users were directed last week to download Threads, a new Snapchat-like app for instant chatting with your closest friends.

But for some Instagram users, finding the new app wasn't quite so simple. That's because the new Instagram sidekick isn't the only app in smartphone app stores with the name "Threads." Those who searched "threads" last week on the iOS App Store or Google Play may have first seen the result for a completely different app, which sported a similar Instagram-purple hue and more reviews than the brand-new app from Facebook.

So those Instagrammers who downloaded the other Threads app — a workplace communication platform — were, understandably, upset when the new app wasn't working. One day after Threads from Instagram was released, the other Threads app saw its average app rating drop down in the Google Play store to just one star.

The work app Threads is still in beta mode, meaning that only people given access are able to log in and use it. More than 20 one-star reviews have been left on Threads' Android app since last Thursday from users complaining they couldn't log in or register for the app.

"Between it being a Facebook app and not ever receiving the registration email, I'm deleting this POS and never looking back," a one-star reviewer left on Threads' Google Play app.

The confusion over the correct Threads app has been "disappointing," Rousseau Kazi, CEO of the workplace app Threads, told Business Insider. Ironically, Kazi worked at Facebook before leaving in 2017 to build his Threads app — a service that directly competes with Facebook's business-focused social network, Workplace.

However, the confusion between the two Threads app has led to a bit more traffic on Kazi's platform. According to Sensor Tower, downloads of the workplace Threads app spiked six times more than usual on Thursday. The team has also seen an increase in people also signing up for the app's beta waitlist since Instagram released its Threads app, Kazi said.

"This is a short-term distraction," Kazi said. "We're focused on getting excited about working on our platform."

While Kazi's Threads app has suffered a slew of one-star reviews on the Google Play Store since Instagram launched its app, Threads in the iOS App Store has not received any reviews at all since August. The reason behind the discrepancy between the apps on the two virtual stores is not entirely clear.
