These are America's favorite airports

Detroit Airport LED tunnels

  • Detroit, Portland, and Indianapolis are among the nicest airports in the US, according to a new survey.
  • J.D. Power asked more than 32,000 travelers about America's airports in order to rank them.
  • Across three categories — mega, large, and medium — only 10 airports got a full five-of-five circle ratings from the company.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Airports. We love to hate (and love) them — and everyone has an opinion about which is best (or worst).

J.D. Power, the company synonymous with measuring consumer satisfaction in cars and trucks, set out to capture how Americans felt about air travel. The firm surveyed more than 32,000 US and Canadian residents to find their favorite airports.

Unsurprisingly, travel hubs that recently got a facelift found their way near the top of the rankings, while those still experiencing construction-related headaches slipped slightly.

"With major terminal construction projects now underway in Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, Atlanta and many other airports, it is becoming impossible for travelers not to experience some form of disruption," Michael Taylor, head of travel intelligence at J.D. Power, said.

"While these projects are absolutely necessary to address surging demand, they are currently causing passenger delays and confusion. This translates into a rushed passenger experience and less money spent on food, beverage and retail—and it's slowing the progress of the airport satisfaction we've seen in the past several years."

The survey, now in its 14th consecutive year, looked at airports across three main categories by size: mega, large, and medium. In each category, airports are given a score out of 1,000 and a "circle rating." Only 10 airports received a full five circles.

Satisfaction has stagnated this year, J.D. Power said, after years of growth. Overall, American airports' average satisfaction score only rose one point, to 762, thanks to "lower-than-average facility access scores, with larger numbers of travelers citing construction-related delays getting into and out of the airport," the company said.

But there's a light at the end of the tunnel. Major terminal upgrades are finishing at airports all over the country, and TSA wait times are improving thanks to biometric screening and better line processes.

Here are the top airports in America, as ranked by travelers, which received the full five circles from J.D. Power:

I tried pasture-raised beef and chicken from Crowd Cow, the company that connects meat eaters to independent farms

  • If you like cooking and exploring different types of meat but want to approach it with a careful conscience, then you should try Crowd Cow.
  • The company sources its meat directly from independent farms that employ more ethical and environmentally friendly practices than traditional factory farms.
  • The beef, pork, and chicken sold through Crowd Cow is pasture-raised. It also sells grass-fed beef and premium Wagyu beef.
  • Through one of Crowd Cow's subscription boxes, the Farmers Market Box ($129), I tried a delicious variety of these meats and could see exactly where each cut came from. The subscription was a convenient and reliable way to get the best of the Crowd Cow experience.

The keys to any relationship are communication and transparency. And yes, as easy as it could be to turn your head the other way, this tenet also applies to your relationship with food.

When online meat supplier Crowd Cow first launched, you could get to know your beef very well — the company let you literally buy shares of a cow directly from a local farm. Once enough people pooled in to buy an entire cow, your cut was shipped directly to you.

Crowd Cow's business model has evolved so that you can no longer become intimately familiar with a cow along with a group of strangers, but its basic spirit lives on. Crowd Cow wants you to know exactly where your meat comes from and how the animal was treated before you cook it.

crowd cow 4

How Crowd Cow works

Crowd Cow sells a variety of responsibly raised meat and seafood:

You can shop all these cuts individually, filtering by type of meat, seasonal specialties, or the farm it's sourced from. Each product page tells you the precise farm and location where the meat came from, and additional background information about the farm and its practices. There is also a large range of prices: You'll find anything from $4 sirloin tip steak to $550 Wagyu center cut ribeye.

Crowd Cow only works with independent farms, and never with industrial farms or meat brokers. It says the meat from these farms is typically "only available at specialty markets, farmer's markets, and high-end restaurants." Crowd Cow is thus also a more convenient and accessible way you can try high-quality meat.

You can also sign up for a recurring subscription box to stock up your fridge with these meats. With a subscription, you get an assortment of cuts (which can vary depending on availability) delivered to you on an automatic basis. Example subscriptions include the Steak Lover's Box and the Lean Protein Box. You can pause, change the frequency of, or cancel this subscription at any time, and shipping is free.

What it's like to order from Crowd Cow: delivery and meat quality

Crowd Cow sent me its Farmers Market subscription box ($129) so that I could see what the delivery experience was like and try a variety of the meats it offers.

My order arrived in a box insulated with Green Cell Foam insulation, which is biodegradable and water soluble, and packed with dry ice. I usually don't arrive home until late on most days, so I'm always concerned about any frozen food package deliveries, but all the meat was still frozen many hours after it was delivered. Before I picked up my package, Crowd Cow sent email updates at every step of the way, from shipping alert to delivery confirmation.

crowd cow 5

The Farmers Market box included top sirloin steaks, ground beef, bacon, Italian sausage, chuck roast, and butterflied chicken. Each individually wrapped cut had a label with the name of the farm it traveled from.

I've cooked the majority of this spread and each cut was delicious and flavorful. What I really love about these boxes is the variety. I typically get bored cooking and eating the same thing every week, and this box was the perfect opportunity to try many different types of meat — high-quality, responsibly raised meat, no less.

Where Crowd Cow fits into the food world at large

At a time that The Economist has called "the year of veganism" and when the environmental impact of eating meat continues to be raised as a key concern in conversations about this planet's future, it might be surprising that services like Crowd Cow not only remain afloat but are doing better than ever before.

As it turns out, US beef production isn't slowing down, which makes Crowd Cow the optimal service that lets you have your meat and eat it too. If you are going to eat meat, Crowd Cow is one way to ensure it's not "mystery meat." It sells a more conscious and responsible way of eating an increasingly contentious protein, so that, at the very least, you are not blindly participating in the problem.

In a discussion about the role of meat in the future of food, James Peisker, the founder of another online meat startup called Porter Road, has said, "People should absolutely be concerned about their diet's environmental impact. Our simple rule of thumb is to eat less, but better meat." Crowd Cow operates in a similar vein.

The bottom line

Crowd Cow gives you reliable, convenient access to the type of meat you want to be eating — raised with ethical and environmentally friendly standards by farmers and ranchers who care. If you like cooking and exploring different types of meat, but want to approach it with a careful conscience, then you should try Crowd Cow.

There's a simple way to stop all those emails from every store you go to that uses Square payment systems — here's how

Square reader / point of sale

  • If you've ever paid for something at a store with a Square credit card reader, you've probably gotten follow-up emails from that store to your personal email address.
  • In New York City, Square readers are extremely common — which has resulted in my inbox getting flooded with spam email from businesses big and small.
  • There's an easy, quick way to stop all those emails from coming. Here's how!
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Last week, my wife and I celebrated our fifth wedding anniversary.

On the way home from work, I stopped at a local flower shop to get her flowers. As they wrapped my flowers, I paid with a credit card using the shop's Square card reader.

Four days later, I got this email from the flower shop:

Square emails

I hadn't given the flower shop my email — I was in and out in less than five minutes.

How in the world did Mrs. Blooms at Fulton Center get my email address and send me this spam? Through Square, it turns out.

"Only a Square Seller that you have directly provided your email address to has access to that personal information. Often this occurs the first time you enter your email address to receive a receipt," Square's FAQ says. In the case of these flowers, I hadn't given my email address for the receipt. But since I gave my email for a receipt at some Square-using store in the past, Square used it to send me marketing from subsequent retail outlets.

"You may receive marketing email (facilitated by Square) from other Square Sellers you have shopped at," the FAQ says. "Square doesn't share your contact information with sellers who you have not directly given it to. If you're receiving a marketing email via Square from a seller who you didn't provide your email to, they do not have access to view your email address and can only market to you via Square Marketing."

So: Because I entered my email address to receive a receipt once, Square kept my email on file and used it to send me spam from other retailers. Great!

Mrs. Blooms was just the latest local retailer that uses Square for its point-of-sale to send me spam, and they didn't even need my email address.

Blue Bottle, where I sometimes buy fancy coffee, has also started sending me spam emails. I went to Rhode Island for a wedding a few weeks ago, and I bought coffee one morning at a shop in Providence — they've also started sending me emails.

And all these emails originate from the same sender: "messages@squaremktg.com."

Square emails

Thankfully, there's a really easy way to stop these emails altogether.

The next time you get one, or if you still have one in your inbox, scroll to the bottom and look for this link:

Square email spam

Once you click through, Square has a very simple toggle that allows you to easily opt out — for some bizarre reason, it's automatically set to "Receive emails from the merchants I frequent."

When you click through, you'll see this:

Square email spam

All you need to do from there is to select "I do not want to receive emails from any merchants," and you should be all set.

You could, of course, add the "messages@squaremktg.com" email address to your spam filter if you want to be all the way through. By all means, you do you, but I've yet to receive a single email since toggling the option to stop receiving all emails.

Google's Sergey Brin has secretly been married to the founder of a legal tech startup since 2018 (GOOG, GOOGL)

Sergey Brin Nicole Shanahan

Google cofounder Sergey Brin has reportedly been married since 2018 to his girlfriend of more than three years.

The girlfriend, legal tech founder Nicole Shanahan, revealed they have been married since last year at a recent event to celebrate her $100 million donation to reproductive research, the Chronicle of Philanthropy reported. Shanahan, 34, and Brin, 46, have a baby girl together who was born late last year, according to Page Six.

The couple has been linked together since 2015, when they were seen together at the star-studded wedding for a dating app CEO in Jamaica. That's the same year that Brin and 23andMe founder Anne Wojcicki finalized their divorce after eight years of marriage.

Shanahan's team declined to comment on the matter, while representatives for Brin have not responded to Business Insider's request for comment.

Shanahan is the founder of legal tech company ClearAccessIP and the Bia-Echo Foundation, whose key investment areas include reproductive health. Shanahan pledged in September to give $100 million to various reproductive health and criminal justice programs, and has used the Bio-Echo foundation to launch a research center focused on women's fertility and reproductive health.

In a speech at a lunch last month celebrating the new center's launch, Shanahan shared about her own struggling trying to conceive with Brin, who she said she married in 2018, the Chronicle of Philanthropy reported. Studies have shown the difficulties and risks of getting pregnant after age 35.

Fortunately, Shanahan was able to get pregnant. It's not clear when the couple's child was born, but Shanahan was visibly pregnant at an event in November 2018.

Brin's child with Shanahan is his third. Brin has two children with Wojcicki, his ex-wife. Brin and Wojcicki first got married in 2007, but split in 2013 (although their divorce wasn't legally finalized until 2015).

Brin then reportedly started dating a Google employee named Amanda Rosenberg, who was also in a relationship with another high-level Google executive at the same time. Vanity Fair reported that before Brin and Wojcicki split, Wojcicki had discovered messages between her husband and Rosenberg that "caused her to feel alarm."

Brin and Shanahan's first public appearance as a couple didn't come until the Met Ball in May 2016, when the two reportedly carpooled together to the event with Wojcicki and her boyfriend at the time, baseball player Alex Rodriguez.

14 animals that are surprisingly legal to own as pets in the US

Domesticated Fox

  • Celebrities from Michael Jackson to Salvador Dali have popularized the idea of owning exotic animals as house pets.
  • From lions to tigers to bears, some of the exotic animals that are legal to own in the US will surely surprise you.
  • Though it may be legal to own some of these animals, many experts advise against it because of the special care these animals require.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

George Clooney and Miley Cyrus have happily called baby pigs their pets. Tori Spelling famously cares for a chicken named Coco who sleeps in her bed.

But those creatures are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to unusual animals that are legal to privately own in the US.

The laws regarding exotic pet ownership vary by state. Animal rights advocates advise against keeping most wild animals in captivity, but that hasn't stopped exotic pet lovers from legally owning everything from ferrets and foxes to more dangerous beasts like alligators, bears, and tigers.

Here is a list of 14 animals that are surprisingly legal to own in the US.

SEE ALSO: 10 jobs that pay well and let you live out your childhood fantasy, from stunt performer to ice cream taster

DON'T MISS: 7 things I wish I'd known before adopting a dog

Salvador Dali owned a pet anteater — and you can too.

It's been 50 years since eccentric artist Salvador Dali was photographed in Paris walking his pet anteater, but this unusual animal is still beloved by plenty of modern-day exotic pet enthusiasts.

Especially beloved is the 10-pound tamandua— the diminutive cousin of the giant anteater — which makes for a cuddly, non-violent companion in many states. Tamanduas love to gobble up termites and — you guessed it — ants, though this doesn't make them an effective form of pest control, according to many experts.

The majority of tigers live as pets, not in the wild.

About 5,000 tigers live in legal captivity in more than a dozen states — many as privately owned pets — while the population of wild tigers has dwindled to about 3,890, according to the World Wildlife Fund

Owning a pet tiger may sound thrilling — Mike Tyson sure thinks so— but caring for it can be a serious challenge. A tiger's diet can consist of up to 88 pounds of meat in one sitting, and its enclosure should be as big as 40 square miles. While studies show tigers can peacefully coexist with people, any frustrated, cooped-up cat has the capacity to eventually lash out.

Foxes are as smart as dogs, and could be on the way to domestication.

It may sound odd, but over the years, wild foxes have been bred to live almost like dogs and cats — but not exactly, as they're hard to fully domesticate.

Today, pet foxes are legal in up to 15 states, but the rules vary by breed. The most common, the fennec fox, is an adorably petite pack animal that is pretty docile — though it is still important to note that even these tiny furry friends are not fully domesticated.

Pet tarantulas can be quite the handful.

They might technically be warm and fuzzy, but tarantulas will balk at human handling and generally prefer a dark place to hide out until their next meal. That meal typically consists of other creepy crawlies like crickets, mealworms, and roaches

While these supercharged spiders may not be your typical family pet, plenty of intrepid arachnophiles disagree — and it's perfectly legal for them own tarantulas in many states.

An alligator is a huge commitment — and it might outlive you.

Believe it or not, it's legal to privately own this notoriously deadly reptile in a number of states, according to FindLaw, including the unofficial home of the gator: Florida.

Pet owners tend to fall in love with baby alligators, which are less than a foot in length and virtually harmless. But adults can grow to be more than 11 feet long, weigh a whopping 1,000 pounds, and live up to 50 years, according to the Smithsonian's National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute. Plus, their carnivorous appetite is practically insatiable — and pet owners can be seen as tasty meals.

Kangaroos are controversial, but they're legal in some states.

Though kangaroos are indigenous to Australia, some have made their way into backyards throughout the US. Many animal advocates, however, are fighting back against the laws that allow private citizens to keep them as pets, arguing that inhumane conditions have led to too many kangaroo deaths at the hands of unprepared caretakers.

Wallabies, a smaller and more docile kind of kangaroo, are a bit more common in the exotic pet world — Elvis Presley briefly had a couple— but like their larger counterparts, they can also become dangerous when agitated, according to The Spruce Pets.

If you're stressed out, consider a pet llama.

The cool, low-key llama is often recruited as a therapy animal, which is why it makes such a great family pet in the states where it's legal.

A pet llama is loyal, affectionate, clean, and generally low-maintenance as long as it has plenty of outdoor space — and preferably a furry cohort by its side, as llamas are herd animals, according to Good Housekeeping.

Need another compelling reason to adopt a few of these cuties? It turns out llamas rival guard dogs in their ability to ward off predators, according to Mother Earth News.

Owning a skunk isn't as stinky as it sounds.

Most domestic skunks have been bred in captivity, where they've had their scent glands removed at a young age, according to PBS. Some animal advocates have called the practice inhumane, as de-scented skunks likely wouldn't survive in the wild if they got lost.

But those who call this surprisingly playful creature a pet in the 17 states where it's legal know that a very well-fed skunk that gets a lot of attention, affection, and discipline likely won't stray far from home.

A porcupine can be a pretty easygoing pet — but it can also be prickly.

Yes, it's possible to pet a porcupine, and a number of states allow you to keep one as a pet. But safely handling this spiky rodent takes patience and skill. That lesson has been learned the hard way by one too many curious dogs who have found themselves on the receiving end of a quill attack.

Porcupines can be trained to a degree — and some even grow to be affectionate toward humans — but bear in mind they're solitary creatures who can become violent when agitated.

Yes, boa constrictors can easily kill you, but they probably won't.

Despite its ominous name, a boa constrictor is quite gentle when properly cared for. This usually involves custom enclosures with simulated tropical conditions and a diet consisting of pre-killed rats and mice on a weekly or monthly basis, according to The Spruce Pets

Needless to say, this exotic, non-venomous pet is not for the faint of heart. But its docile nature — when not provoked, of course — has earned it legal status in plenty of states.

A pet cougar can be tamed, but it can never be domesticated.

Wildcats are just that — wild. Yet a number of US states allow you to keep them in captivity, according to Big Cat Rescue.

A popular choice for exotic pet owners is the cougar, which is obviously also a risky one.

Though a privately owned cougar will eventually grow accustomed to its owners, it can never be domesticated like a dog or a cat. The best you can hope for is a docile — and sometimes playful — pet that won't crush you to death with its powerful jaw.

Two-toed sloths are the darlings of the exotic pet world — just ask Kristen Bell.

Actress Kristen Bell went viral in 2012 after she publicly burst into tears upon meeting a two-toed sloth. The internet largely agreed — these tree-dwelling creatures are irresistible. But they're also high-maintenance creatures that are accustomed to wild, tropical habitats that can't always be duplicated by pet owners.

Even though sloths are legal to own in several states, the Sloth Conservation Foundation warns not to mistake their slow-moving nature for comfort. Stillness is actually a defense mechanism they've developed to blend in when they feel threatened by predators.

A pet bear can be your best friend — or your worst enemy.

Oh my, you really can keep a bear as a pet in more than a dozen states — though that won't be the case for long if the Humane Society has its way.

And while bears have been known to develop affectionate relationships with their human caregivers, there have been far too many cautionary tales of bears who snapped and mauled people out of nowhere after lifelong relationships. That's because — pets or not — bears are wild animals with primal instincts that can be activated in the blink of an eye.

Owning a pet monkey is like raising a toddler for 40 years.

Sure, monkeys are cute and in some ways remind us of tiny humans — but that's part of the reason they're such a handful to raise as pets. Monkeys require constant care and attention, and many will live up to 40 years, according to the Primate Rescue Center

That means four decades of diapers, not to mention aggressive behaviors like biting and throwing feces. Still, that hasn't deterred exotic pet owners throughout the US from owning everything from mischievous capuchin monkeys (like Ross had on "Friends") to high-maintenance chimpanzees (think Michael Jackson's chimp, Bubbles).

Google cofounder Sergey Brin has secretly been married to a law tech founder since 2018. Here are 14 other power couples who rule the tech world.

Sergey Brin Nicole Shanahan

As the singer Grimes, Tesla CEO Elon Musk's maybe-paramour, might say, we appreciate power.

While some tech leaders, like Mark Zuckerberg, have been with their partners since college, notable figures in the tech sector have gravitated toward partners with just as much — or more! — power and pull in their industries.

It was recently reported that Google cofounder Sergey Brin has secretly been married since 2018 to his girlfriend, legal tech founder Nicole Shanahan. Shanahan, 34, and Brin, 46, have a baby girl together who was born late last year, according to Page Six.

But there have also been some high-profile splits in the past year that have hit some prominent tech leaders. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and his wife, MacKenzie, announced in early January that they were getting a divorce. Elon Musk and the Canadian singer Grimes dated for a while, though it's unclear whether the on again, off again couple is still together.

Here are 15 of the top power couples in the tech industry:

This cooling mattress protector is a game-changer for those who sleep hot or experience night sweats — here's how it improved my overall sleep

Brooklyn Bedding Luxury Cooling Mattress

  • If you sleep hot or experience night sweats, a cooling mattress protector can help regulate your temperature and improve your overall sleep.
  • Brooklyn Bedding just launched their Luxury Cooling Mattress Protector ($99 for a Twin to $149 for a King or California King) and it's one of the best things that has ever happened to my sleep!
  • It is made out of a smooth top knit material that is sweat-wicking, waterproof, and hypoallergenic. It also fits your bed like a fitted sheet.

For most of my adult life, I have put little thought into mattress protectors. I always considered them to be one of those things that you need — you know, asprotection from bacteria and debris — but really not something you need to invest a whole lot of money in. I would stroll into Target or HomeGoods, and basically pick one out with my eyes closed.

However, things changed as I got older. For one, my mattresses got more expensive. When you are sleeping on a mattress that is worth a couple thousand dollars, you want to keep it protected — especially when you have young children and pets who always seem to end up in your bed.

Another factor is that my husband and I both seem to overheat during the night. So while it is crucial that we have a waterproof mattress cover on our bed if we want to keep it in tip-top shape, most vinyl covers can add to that heat and sweatiness, which is so not fun. I mean, who wants to change their sheets almost every single night due to serious night sweats? Not me.

Well, according to John Merwin, owner and chief executive officer of Brooklyn Bedding, a good mattress protector can be a game-changer.

"A mattress purchase can be a significant investment. Mattress protectors promote greater longevity of your investment and ensure a cleaner, more hygienic night's sleep," he says. "Because they actually serve as a barrier — coming between the sleeper and the sleep surface — some styles can impact the overall breathability of the bed."

Makes sense, right?

So I decided to try Brooklyn Bedding's Luxury Cooling Mattress Protector. I was skeptical about the company's claims of it providing "luxurious cooling and protection for ultimate comfort." How luxurious can a mattress pad be, after all? Could a good mattress pad really up my sleep game?

According to Merwin, the company developed the Luxury Cooling Mattress Protector to "definitively maintain the benefits of advanced cooling technology found in higher-end beds, and even help enhance the breathability of a standard mattress."

The company decided to treat the Luxury Cooling Mattress Protector as a companion to their newly launched Luxury Cooling Pillow. It features the same premium smooth top knit used in the elite Brooklyn Aurora— their most popular mattress. The result is a silky-smooth fabric that delivers cooling on contact while elevating the overall sleep experience and protecting the life of the mattress.

The cover is made out of highly conductive materials, designed to draw heat out and away from the body. It is both hypoallergenic and waterproof and protects against bacteria, bed bugs, and dust mites in addition to all types of fluids and liquids. It covers the mattress snugly, like a fitted sheet, and can be easily removed for frequent laundering. This also helps promote a healthier sleep environment.

My review of the Brooklyn Bedding Luxury Cooling Mattress Protector

My husband and I had been sleeping on the All New Purple Mattress for a few nights, sans mattress protector, when I received my Brooklyn Bedding protector in the mail. Though we loved our All New Purple Mattress, my husband complained incessantly that its "smart comfort grid" made it feel like we were sleeping on an egg crate. I slipped the mattress protector on it, and as promised, it fit like a glove — no wrinkles, no bunching up, no awkwardly fitting corners. Next, I placed my sheets on top and rolled around a little. No more egg crate!

As I mentioned before, my husband and I both tend to sleep hot. There have been nights that I have woken up repeatedly soaking wet for reasons that remain unexplained. But really, can a mattress protector actually prevent this from happening? Apparently so. I have been sleeping on it for several weeks now, and while I might heat up a little during the night, I have yet to get to the point of overheating.

As for the protector's waterproof claims, I can also attest to that. One evening my toddler had a little accident while she was sleeping in our bed. I tore off the sheets and mattress protector in fear that our new mattress was ruined, but to my relief, it was perfectly dry!

I tossed it in the wash, laundered it in warm water with no bleach added, and then threw it in the dryer on low. It came out just as perfect as before!

The bottom line

I will never, I repeat NEVER, again sleep with a regular, old cheap mattress protector on my bed. I admit, I was a total skeptic about investing money in a mattress proteor before I tried out Brooklyn Bedding's Luxury Cooling Mattress Protector, but it has made me a total convert.

I can honestly say that this protector has not only kept my mattress from being soaked with urine, but also made my sleeping experience so much cooler and blissful.

Invest in your sleep and do yourself a favor: Try this bad boy out! However, if you are still looking for other options, check out the Insider Picksbuying guide for the best mattress protectors.

The founder of the Discovery Channel is selling his 8,700-acre Colorado ranch for $279 million — complete with a hotel, fossilized dinosaur poop, and a vintage car collection worth $55 million

Two years ago, John Hendricks, the founder of the Discovery Channel, was looking to part with his Colorado ranch to the tune of $149 million. Now, he's looking to part with all of his Colorado real-estate holdings, including Gateway Canyons Resort, to the tune of $279 million, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The roughly 8,700-acre property is situated mostly in Mesa County, Colorado, with parts in Grand County, Utah, according to the Gateway Canyons Properties site

In 2017, Hendricks listed a 22,000-square-foot main house. That $149 million listing included horse and bison pastures, an airstrip and hangar, helipad, stables, and even an observatory.

Read more: A 200,683-acre ranch where the Mrs. Fields Cookies founder once lived is selling for $45 million. Here's a look inside the sprawling property, complete with cattle, Scottish stained glass, and its very own river.

Now, the listing also includes Hendricks's personal car collection as an on-site automobile museum with 55 vintage cars, including a 1906 Cadillac, as well as a fully-operational resort. The Gateway Canyons Resort has 72 guest suites across several lodges and private residences, five restaurants, and business conference facilities.

Recently, Amy Dobson of Forbes reported that Ryan Serhant, a star of Bravo's "Million Dollar Listing" and the author of "Sell It Like Serhant," gave a video tour of the sprawling property, highlighting the more unusual details and "extras" the main house and larger ranch have to offer.  Those include, among many other things: fossilized dinosaur poop embedded in the stained glass of the home's main entrance, a $3 million helicopter, a four-floor elevator, and an indoor fountain.

Kerry Endsley of LIV Sotheby's International Realty has the listing.

Hendricks purchased West Creek Ranch in 1995, then in later years acquired additional land to assemble the current tract. "West Creek Ranch is a place where the earth really opens up to tell its story. When you look up at the walls of the canyons, it's all these layers of earth that go back 300 million years," Hendricks said in a press release announcing the listing in 2017.

According to the Wall Street Journal's report about the initial listing in 2017, he decided to sell the property because he and his wife, Maureen, wanted to spend more time traveling in Europe and working on the nearby Gateway Canyons resort.

In September, Hendricks told Katherine Clarke of the Wall Street Journal that he decided to throw in the resort because would-be buyers looking at the ranch kept asking him about it. As of May, he said he was spending more time on other work commitments, like the subscription video-on-demand service he founded in 2015 called CuriosityStream, and less on the resort.

This kitchen prep set is under $20 and has everything you need for mixing and measuring

vremi mixing bowls

  • Filling your kitchen with cooking tools and gadgets is fun, but it can get expensive.
  • These days, you can find lots of quality kitchen supplies at budget prices, though some are better than others.
  • The Vremi Mixing Bowl Set ($18.99) is cute, affordable, and has more than enough pieces for all of my mixing and measuring needs. I've yet to feel the need for a more expensive option.

Outfitting a kitchen can be an expensive pursuit. There are some essentials everyone needs, and depending on your cooking abilities and lifestyle, there are plenty of other cooking tools and kitchen gadgets you'll probably want, too. But, if you're not a pro chef or are living by a budget, you probably don't want to spend a fortune on mixing bowls, knives, and the like. And luckily, you don't have to.

It's not hard to find cheap kitchen and home goods these days, but not all are created equal. I've been thoroughly impressed with my $19 Vremi Mixing Bowl Set, which contains 13 pieces that are all you need for mixing and measuring. If you're already sold, you can head to Amazon to buy it now. If you want to learn more about the product, keep reading for a quick breakdown of all the specs.

What you get

For less than $20, you'll get four measuring cups, five measuring spoons, two mixing bowls, a colander, and a strainer. Everything in this set can be stacked onto each other. The nesting style maximizes your space for easy storage, as everything fits into each other perfectly.

The products come in a fun rainbow of colors, and everything included is made of BPA-free plastic. Plus it's all dishwasher safe for easy clean-up.

Why you'll love it

This set can be used for meal prep, serving, washing, mixing, measuring, and more. While 13 pieces may not seem like enough for all of your kitchen needs, I've found the set to be beyond sufficient.

On top of the utility, the quality is great — especially at this price point. After multiple runs in the dishwasher, nothing has changed and every piece looks good as new. But remember, this is still plastic, so if you treat it like a stainless steel mixing bowl you can probably expect some damage over time.

Bottom Line

This set of mixing bowls, measuring cups, and measuring spoons isn't particularly unique, but at just $18.99, it's a great value. It's space-saving, versatile, easy to clean, and affordable — all great things if you ask me. In my experience, and according to some 700 happy Amazon shoppers, the products hold up well over time. The cute, colorful aesthetic doesn't hurt either.

The best affordable vacuum cleaners you can buy

$

  • Some inexpensive vacuum cleaners cost you more in disappointment than they do in dollars.
  • But getting clean floors and carpets doesn't require spending a lot of money.
  • Our favorite is the Shark Navigator Lift-Away. It performs like a champion, and the super-reasonable price is an additional bonus.

Vacuuming might not be the most enjoyable way to spend your free time, but there's no reason it needs to suck away your dollars along with your carpet's dirt. Sure, those ultra-expensive vacuums promise to extract every last speck of grime from your flooring, but do they really deliver results superior enough to justify their price?

In our research and tests, we found that a good vacuum doesn't have to cost a fortune. In fact, you can buy an excellent vacuum cleaner with nearly as many bells and whistles as the more expensive models for just three-hundred dollars – in some cases, a lot less.

Besides our own testing, we combed through top consumer product review websites and feedback from vacuum owners to find the best inexpensive vacuum cleaners you can buy.

Here are the best affordable vacuums you can buy:

Updated on 9/3/2019 by Les Shu: Updated pricing, links, and formatting.

The best inexpensive vacuum overall

The Shark Navigator Lift-Away has a great price, excellent performance, and a useful set of tools that make it our number-one pick.

The Shark Navigator Lift-Away is an ingeniously designed vacuum cleaner that combines the best attributes of an upright vac with the handiness of a canister vacuum, providing you with the best of both worlds.

The "Lift-Away" portion of the name refers to the option of lifting the canister and hose right off the base for easy vacuuming of stairs, underneath furniture, tight corners, and those pesky cobwebs dangling from the high reaches of your ceiling. You won't need super-strength to lift the vacuum up to those high corners, either. The whole vacuum weighs just 12.5 pounds or around eight pounds if you're only using the canister and hose portion.

This is a bagless vacuum cleaner, with a HEPA filter and what the manufacturer calls "Anti-Allergen Complete Seal Technology," so you'll be protected from dust, pollen, animal dander, and other nose-provoking allergens. When it's time to empty the vacuum's dirt canister, simply unclip its fasteners, hold the canister over the trash bin, push the button, and watch the dirt and dust tumble into the trash.

Wirecutter chose this vacuum as its recommended pick, as well, praising it for reliability and durability. It found the Shark to be far superior to other inexpensive vacuum cleaners, and better than many pricier options. The Shark Navigator Lift-Away has quality belts and filters, rather than the cheap ones usually found in low-priced vacuums, so you'll get your money's worth and then some before this vacuum even begins to consider giving up the ghost.

Consumer Reports also liked this vacuum, giving it a "Very Good" rating and finding that it "excels at removing embedded dirt from carpets." On Amazon, buyers said they love the powerful suction, the ability to detach the canister for easier access to high or tight spaces, the beater that makes short work of removing dirt from carpeting but switches off for safe cleaning of hard floors, the low noise level, and the ease of washing filters rather than replacing them. And of course, many love the extremely reasonable price.

On the downside, some owners wish the electrical cord was longer, and some said the vacuum cleaner felt a bit top-heavy.

The Shark Navigator Lift-Away comes with a dusting brush, an 8-inch and a 24-inch crevice tool, and a wide pet upholstery tool.

Pros: Low price, superior performance, five-year warranty, lift-off canister and hose

Cons: Hose is a bit short at 5 feet, electric cord is short at only 25 feet

The best inexpensive canister vacuum

If you need a vacuum for hard floors, the Eureka Mighty Mite Canister Vacuum is a strong performer at a great price.

Typically, canister vacuums are best for hard flooring. While the Eureka Mighty Mite Canister Vacuum is no exception to that rule, it also does an acceptable job on carpet, making it a good choice for those with mostly hard flooring, but also some carpeting in a portion of the home.

This is a terrific vacuum cleaner if you have stairs, or frequently vacuum underneath furniture or high up on walls or ceiling corners. It's also useful for vacuuming curtains or blinds, the inside of your car, or upholstered furniture. And as an added bonus, you can convert it to a blower by switching the hose from the front of the canister to the blower port near the back. Now you can easily blow leaves, dust, or other grunge out of your garage or workshop.

Nerdwallet rated this as one of the best canister vacuum cleaners, commenting that it particularly excels at cleaning stairs. ConsumerSearch chose it as the best cheap canister vacuum, praising its weight and excellent performance on hard floors.

This is a bagged vacuum cleaner, with a triple filtration system, so you won't get dirty or dusty emptying a canister or worry about an allergy flare-up.  The non-rotating brush won't damage your hard floors, and its motor is powerful enough to provide steady, strong suction.

On Amazon, shoppers really like this lightweight vacuum (it weighs less than 9 pounds) for stairs and hard floors, although most caution it isn't nearly as good at cleaning deep carpet. It did receive praise for its performance with pet hair. There were some complaints about the hose crimping too easily, however, and some buyers wished the electrical cord was longer.

The Eureka Mighty Mite comes with one bag, two extension wands, a crevice tool, and an upholstery brush.

Pros: Lightweight, great for hard floors and stairs, converts to a blower, good for cleaning upholstery and drapes

Cons: So-so performance on carpeting, cord is not very long

The best inexpensive stick vacuum cleaner

Think of the Hoover Platinum Linx Cordless Stick Vacuum as a turbo-charged broom — it's a quick, easy, and effective way to get your hard floors clean.

If you want more muscle than a regular broom provides, but don't need the power (and weight) of a regular vacuum cleaner, the Hoover Platinum Linx Cordless Stick Vacuum is a good compromise. This isn't for thick carpets or even for very large stretches of hard flooring, but for those quick cleanups when the kids spill their snacks, or for vacuuming up dust bunnies, kitty litter, and general dust and dirt, it's a great vacuum to have on hand.

We have been recommending this product since 2016, and like it just as much today. Good Housekeeping gave it 4.5 (stars out of 5) and praised its excellent performance on hard floors, effectiveness at picking up pet hair, and intuitive controls.

The Linx has good suction and a powered brush-roll, so it does get some of the dirt and grime out of your low-pile carpet, but you'll mostly want to use it on your hard floors. Its reasonably wide cleaning path and edge-cleaning bristles make it a snap to clean your kitchen or bathroom floors, and once you're done, it's just a push of the button to empty the dirt cup.

This is a cordless vacuum that runs on a lithium-ion battery system. Typically, you'll get 20 to 30 minutes of use before you need to recharge the batteries, which is enough for a small-to-average home.

Amazon buyers loved the convenience of a cordless vacuum and being able to do a quick clean without the fuss and bother of breaking out the full-size vacuum. Many said they use it daily and loved the way it picks up pet hair and dirt. There are some complaints, of course: Some owners claimed it clogs easily, and others had issues with the battery.

Pros: Extreme-incline handle makes it easy to vacuum under furniture, lightweight and easy to use, battery indicator shows you how much charge is left

Cons: Some owners feel it clogs too easily

Best inexpensive handheld vacuum

The powerful Black & Decker Cordless Lithium Hand Vac is ideal for quick cleanup jobs, but you might be tempted to use it to vacuum your entire home.

Life might be filled with joy, but it's also frequently filled with spills in need of a quick cleanup — especially life with kids and pets. For the latter, that's when the Black & Decker Cordless Lithium Hand Vac steps in. This powerful handheld vacuum makes quick work of messes.

But a good portable vac isn't just for pet owners or parents. Use your Black & Decker handheld vacuum to pick up dust bunnies and dirt from underneath your bed, clean away crumbs from kitchen floors, clear cobwebs out of your window sliders, or vacuum up dirt, leaves, and grit from your car's floor mats. Whatever the use, you'll find this hand vacuum is up to the challenge.

Realistically, of course, a hand vacuum is only for small jobs, not cleaning the entire living room floor, but the Black & Decker Cordless Lithium Hand Vac has plenty of power. When fully charged, it'll run for approximately 15 minutes without a fade in power, which is plenty of time for the sort of cleaning jobs that are ideal for such a vac.

Wirecutter also chose this handheld vac as its best budget pick, saying, "If you need something simple for quick cleanups, this is a small, affordable handheld that'll get the job done." ConsumerSearch liked it as well, calling the Black & Decker hand vac "surprisingly powerful."

This Dustbuster (which is what these Black & Decker portable vacs are known as) has more than 17,000 reviews and an average of 4.1 stars. Buyers loved the way the thin nozzle of the vacuum fits into small spaces, and also praised its powerful suction that won't fade or falter during the vacuum's run time. The negative comments are mostly from owners who wished the vacuum ran longer on a full charge.

The Black & Decker Cordless Lithium Hand Vac comes with a crevice tool and brush, along with its charging base and washable filter.

Pros: Terrific suction, lightweight, fits into small spaces, cordless

Cons: Noisy, short run time, only for small vacuuming jobs

The best robot vacuum under $300

The Eufy RoboVac 11S is significantly cheaper than nearly every other robot vacuum we've tested, but it's just as good at cleaning.

Eufy is known for its budget-friendly RoboVac line. We tested several and found them to be very capable robot vacuums, but the Eufy 11S, is our pick because it has a slim profile that fits in tighter spaces, a long runtime, and good feature-set. Oh, and it's also very affordable.

Despite the small form-factor, the 11S has a large dustbin to collect more dirt. Eufy also claims it has a 30% stronger suction to clean floors even more efficiently than earlier models. At 2.85-inches tall, it can vacuum under bed frames, cabinets, and other tight spaces without getting stuck. When we tested it, it navigated across hardwood, tile, and carpet effortlessly.

The 11S gets 100 minutes of battery life while cleaning. The RoboVac 11S' has several operating modes. Spot mode, for instance, will focus on cleaning a small, specific area for two minutes, while Single Room mode will start a 30-minute cleaning session in a certain space.

The RoboVac's remote also lets you set up a schedule, so you can start your vacuum before you go to work, and return home to spotless floors. Overall, the vacuum maneuvers gracefully around furniture and molding, and picks up a good amount of the dust, hair, and everything else that accumulate.

It may not have all the smart features like app or voice control, like higher-end models, but it cleans just as well. If you don't care about smart features, it's an excellent deal. — Lulu Chang and Malarie Gokey

Pros: Affordable without sacrificing key functionality, low profile allows the vacuum to get into small spaces

Cons: No voice control or connectivity

What kind of vacuum do you need?

Which type of vacuum do you need?

To a certain extent, the choice between a vacuum cleaner that uses a bag to contain dirt and grime and bagless models that collect the grunge in a plastic canister is a matter of personal preference, and some people feel quite strongly one way or another. But each has its own pros and cons.

  • Bagged vacuum cleaners are the best choice if you or a family member suffers from allergies or asthma. Dust and allergens are well contained in the bag, and many have HEPA filters for additional protection. Plus, you don't need to maintain the vacuum as often. On the downside, you have to buy bags, which is an additional expense.
  • Bagless vacuum cleaners save you money because you don't need to buy bags, and they are a more eco-friendly choice as well. You'll need to empty the canister frequently, however – possibly every time you vacuum if you have a pet – and that can be a dusty, messy chore that stirs up allergies for some people.

The four types of vacuums

There are four basic types of vacuum cleaners, excluding robotic vacuums, which we cover separately.

Upright vacuums: Have mostly carpet? Then an upright vacuum is your best choice. You'll also find the widest selection of these basic vacuum cleaners.

  • Pros: Good for carpet, less expensive than canister vacuums, easy to store, wide cleaning path
  • Cons: Heavy to push, difficult to use on stairs, noisy

Canister vacuums: If your home has mostly hard flooring, or there are a lot of stairs, a canister vac is your best bet.

  • Pros: Good for hard floors, can be used on drapes and furniture, lighter and easier to maneuver than upright vacuums
  • Cons: Bulky to store, not as many models to choose from

Stick vacuums: These mini-versions of upright vacuums are not going to replace a regular vacuum unless you live in a tiny home, but they are great for quick cleanup of small areas or messes.

  • Pros: Inexpensive, lightweight, many are cordless
  • Cons: Not great on carpet, best for small areas only

Handheld vacuums: Like stick vacs, these small vacuums are not going to replace a full-size vacuum cleaner, but they are very useful when you just want to pick up pet hair or clean a small area of carpet or hard flooring.

  • Pros: Lightweight, fairly quiet, useful for cleaning your car's interior or small spots around your home
  • Cons: Most are not very powerful, and are best for quick cleanup jobs

I tried Dailylook, a personal-styling service that sends curated boxes of clothing to try on at home — the brands it carries are on the pricey side, but the selections were spot-on

dailylook personal styling

  • I don't enjoy shopping, but I do still have opinions about and want control over what I wear. I love personal styling services because they choose clothing for me while taking into consideration my style and preferences.
  • I tried one called Dailylook, which used my personal Style Profile, a proprietary algorithm, and a full-time stylist to send me a box of clothing it thinks I'll like.
  • On the spectrum of personal styling services, Dailylook is on the more premium end. The styling fee is $40 per month, clothing starts at $60 per item, and some standout brands include Mara Hoffman, Maison Scotch, and Badgley Mischka.
  • The cost is worth it — it's highly likely you'll find something you love (I ended up keeping three of my pieces), and the convenience is unparalleled.

Though I write about products every single day, I'm actually not a huge shopper in my personal life. Shopping for clothing in particular tires me out, and after a couple hours of sifting through racks and sweating profusely in small dressing rooms, I'm ready to grab a drink and call it a day.

Personal styling services were basically made for shopping haters like me. Online shopping by myself, while much more convenient, can still be overwhelming. But I wouldn't want to forego shopping altogether and just wear a T-shirt and jeans every day.

An online service such as Dailylook is the best solution for someone who simultaneously doesn't enjoy shopping, has an opinion about her personal style, and wants to have some say and control over her wardrobe.

dailylook personal styling 3

The premium clothing subscription box, which is delivered monthly, contains clothing pieces that are curated based on the user's body shape, lifestyle, and aesthetic preferences. Dailylook uses a mix of proprietary algorithms and human stylists to curate these picks, and it's a system that works really well — its customers receive something they like and purchase it 80% of the time.

Dailylook's team is ultra-efficient about its operations: each month, its buying team has a given budget to buy just the right amount and assortment of merchandise to service its clients. As founder Brian Ree points out, this process "is not all that different from having your own personal stylist go out with a budget and do your shopping offline for you. [But] it takes almost all of the hard work, logistics, and guess-work out of shopping for yourself."

Why Dailylook is different

You've probably heard about other services like Stitch Fix or Trunk Club that sell the same idea. Dailylook distinguishes itself with premium brands like Mara Hoffman and Badgley Mischka, and the use of full-time stylists. At other personal styling services, it's common for stylists to be part-time or ad-hoc hires, which does offer stylists more flexibility, but may prevent them from fully understanding and engaging with the brand.

Dailylook's stylists are always interacting with clothing and clients from the brand, giving them the opportunity to develop genuine relationships with customers. While the online platform is still a degree of separation that prevents the service from being fully human and personal, this intentional use of full-time stylists injects life into an otherwise algorithm-heavy service.

How Dailylook works

I went through the process of ordering and tried a Dailylook box for myself. Here's what the process looks like:

1.  Fill out your Style Profile.

Like all other personal styling services, Dailylook needs to learn more about you first. It asks standard questions like your clothing sizes, favorite brands that you currently wear, what areas of your body you want to show off or keep covered, and your budget for each type of clothing. The more detailed you are with your responses, the better your Dailylook stylist will be able to pick out clothes for you.

Afterwards, you can browse the "New Looks" section on the site, which is filled with completed outfits that you can favorite. Your favorites will further help your stylist figure out your tastes.

Dailylook personal styling

2. Receive your box at the door.

All your clothes come in a blue gift box, which I thought was a nice touch and made the shipment feel like a special treat. It comes with a bag with a prepaid return shipping label for all the clothes you decide not to keep.

3. Try on everything and decide what you want to keep.

The styling fee for each box is $40, which can be used as credit towards any clothing piece you decide to keep.

I received 12 pieces total in my box. They included pants, tops, dresses, and jumpsuits, and I ended up keeping three items — a light cami for casual summer days, a comfortable and stretchy jumpsuit that could be dressed up or down, and a bright pink dress that would look excellent at weddings and cocktail hours.

Overall, the fit of all the pieces were spot-on, and there were no major discrepancies between what my Style Profile relayed and the pieces I received. Compared to a service like Rent the Runway, which encourages taking risks on ultra-trendy pieces, Dailylook is better for finding quality investment pieces that you'll wear often (especially considering you're paying to own them).

Each item in the box will cost at least $60, so keep that price in mind as you consider trying Dailylook. If you have a lower budget, we recommend trying Stitch Fix or Trunk Club— their offerings start at $25 each. The merchandise comes from a mix of premium brands and Dailylook's own in-house brands.

dailylook personal styling 2

4. Keep your favorites, and send back everything you didn't love.

You have five days after delivery to try everything and send back your returns.

Since my box included some heavier and thicker pieces like a sweater and jeans, it was a bit of squeeze trying to fit all my returns into the provided bag. I wish the bag were bigger, but the company advised me that I could also return everything in the blue box instead.

Make sure also to give your feedback online. Dailylook says 50% of its business is based off of user feedback.

5. Rinse and repeat.

By default, you're scheduled for one personal styling box a month. However, you can skip a month, change your delivery date, pause your subscription, or cancel your subscription whenever you want. You can also change your stylist if you feel like your current one isn't a match.

Is Dailylook right for you?

If you like owning stylish clothes from premium brands, but don't want to put in the work of shopping for said clothes, you're the ideal candidate for Dailylook. The process of filling out your Style Profile doesn't take long, and you have a generous amount of time to try out the clothing in your own home. It's easy and convenient to use because you can control when you want to receive your box, plus you're never married to the stylist you're paired with.

This popular $28 glycolic acid peel softened my skin overnight without turning me bright red

  • Maelove's Glycolic Acid cream, The Night Renewer ($27.95), was designed as a highly potent AHA cream that's gentle enough for sensitive skin.
  • AHA helps create smoother, brighter skin by encouraging rapid cell turnover and stimulating collagen production. It's often used to fade scarring, reduce fine lines and pores, and soften skin.
  • I used The Night Renewer for a few weeks consistently, and it made good on claims of delivering the benefits of a chemical peel without the harsh side effects.

If you — like many of us lost souls — sometimes feel like you've been put on this earth just to complete a seemingly impossible crusade for effective, cheap skin care products, you may have already stumbled across newcomer Maelove. If not, take note: It's a line of skin-care basics meticulously formulated by MIT grads (with the help of some AI) and designed to work for all skin types. Best of all, each product is priced under $30.

Maelove's line is full of standouts, but perhaps most noteworthy is the gentle Glycolic Acid cream, The Night Renewer ($27.95), that took the company two years to accomplish. It's noteworthy because, unlike many potent AHAs, it's not supposed to be too harsh for sensitive skin types to use. The Night Renewer combines 10% medical-grade glycolic acid to slough away dead skin overnight, as well as hyaluronic acid to hydrate and calm the skin. While AHA breaks down the glue holding tired, dull skin cells together to even tone, stimulate collagen production, and give you smoother skin overnight, ingredients like Vitamin E, Squalene, and Aloe nourish the skin.

In other words, it's supposed to be the secret to locking in the benefits of glycolic acid without paying for it in irritated, dry skin.

When asked by Business Insider which Maelove product was her favorite in February 2019, Maelove co-founder Jackie Kim gave the nod to The Night Renewer. After testing the nighttime cream for myself, I can see why Kim elected this as her all-time favorite, even in a line with a $28 Vitamin C Serum that launched the startup to fame.

I started out using The Night Renewer three times per week as recommended. On application nights, I'd wash my face with my Holy Grail cleanser (a $38 cleansing gel from Dr. Dennis Gross), pat my skin dry, and evenly cover my face with a small dollop of The Night Renewer cream (a little goes a long way). Most of the time, the glycolic acid stung slightly upon application — but, while noticeable, the sting wasn't painful, and the tingling sensation disappeared about 30 seconds post-application. In the morning, I'd swipe my go-to micellar water across my face to remove any residue and proceed with my typical morning routine

I've been using it consistently for a few weeks, and my skin is markedly softer, scars are noticeably faded, and fine lines and pores both appear less defined each morning after using.

When Kim describes The Night Renewer as gentle but effective — two words I grew up viewing as incompatible variables in skin care — she's telling the truth. My pale combination skin often responds to powerful resurfacing agents like glycolic acid and deep clay masks by turning bald-uakari-monkey-red —  like I just moved a couch into a seven-story walk-up. This isn't the case with The Night Renewer. Other than the initial tingling, I don't notice any overt reaction from my skin.

Despite the transactional mindset (pain exchanged for beauty) we often apply to skin-care, The Night Renewer manages to resurface the skin without requiring discomfort. It makes good on its claims of delivering the effectiveness of a chemical peel without the harsh side effects.

I often recommend Maelove as one of the internet's best-kept secrets. It's radically affordable for the no-nonsense quality, and it's designed to work for all skin types. And if you're looking for a glycolic acid cream that will resurface the skin for a brighter, smoother, more even complexion, I recommend checking out The Night Renewer.

However, it bears repeating that skin-care is notoriously subjective. Luckily, Maelove also has a 100-day, 100% money-back guarantee — so you're not risking much if you want to give it a try yourself.

Tip: Use the code "TEN" at checkout for 10% off any purchase of two or more products for a limited time.

One of NYC's most iconic luxury hotels was used to film 'Gossip Girl' scenes and is home to two $25,000-a-night penthouse suites. I got a tour — here's what it looks like inside.

jewel suite palace hotel

The Lotte New York Palace, one of New York City's most iconic luxury hotels, claims to be the oldest operating luxury hotel in the city.

Staying there doesn't come cheap. Nightly rates start at about $349 and can run up to $25,000 to stay in one of the hotel's twin penthouse suites.

The Champagne Suite and the Jewel Suite each spans three floors and 5,000 square feet. The two suites are commonly booked by diplomats and heads of state, Middle Eastern monarchs and royal family members, and business leaders, according to David Shenman, the hotel's director of sales and marketing.

I recently got a tour of the two suites. Here's what they look like.

SEE ALSO: I toured the $10,000-a-night penthouse suite of a new luxury hotel in the heart of Times Square, and I felt like I was miles from the most hated part of New York

DON'T MISS: One of the best hotels in the US is a 147-year-old inn on a secluded island 3 hours from NYC. I visited and found a glaring difference from most other luxury hotels — and that's exactly its appeal.

The Lotte New York Palace hotel is one of New York City's most iconic luxury hotels.

Opened in 1981, the Lotte New York Palace claims to be the first luxury hotel in New York City.

That, however, is a disputed title. Take, for example, the Waldorf Astoria: The original hotel was built in 1893, and the current hotel opened in 1931.

David Shenman, the hotel's director of sales and marketing, clarified that when the Palace opened, it was awarded the AAA Five Diamond Award from the American Automobile Association.

"This was certainly the gold standard of hotels at that time," Shenman said.

The Palace was the first hotel in New York state to receive the prestigious award, according to Shenman.

Today, the hotel has a four-diamond AAA rating.

The hotel comprises two sections: the original 140-year-old mansion, and the 55-story skyscraper addition built about 40 years ago.

Nightly rates at the Palace start at about $349 and can run up to $25,000 to stay in one of the hotel's twin penthouse suites.

The two penthouse suites are commonly booked by diplomats and heads of state, Middle Eastern monarchs and royal family members, and business leaders, according to Shenman.

The hotel's courtyard, which has a rear view of the ornate St. Patrick's Cathedral, used to be used as a horse and buggy turnaround area, according to Shenman.

The courtyard — and other parts of the hotel — became famous as filming locations for the teen drama CW series "Gossip Girl."

In fact, the hotel offers its own "Gossip Girl Getaway" package, which includes accommodations in the hotel, a welcome snack of macarons and Prosecco gummy bears, two "Gossip Girl" Champagne cocktails at Trouble's Trust, one of the hotel's cocktail bars, postcards featuring the show's filming locations at the hotel, and a 25% discount on tickets to the "Gossip Girl Sites Tour" operated by On Location Tours.

On a recent afternoon, I got a tour of the Lotte New York Palace and its two $25,000 penthouse suites with David Shenman.

The hotel's main entrance is on 50th Street between Park and Madison Avenues, but it also has entrances on Madison Avenue and 51st Street.

The lobby was bustling with people checking in and out.

My visit was during the United Nations General Assembly, when the hotel goes into a sort of "lock down" mode because so many diplomats and heads of state stay there, according to Shenman.

The Towers, however, has its own separate lobby, which was much quieter.

We took the elevator up to the top of the towers and stepped into the Champagne Suite. The formal living room features floor-to-ceiling windows with panoramic views of Manhattan, including the Empire State Building.

The Champagne Suite claims to be Champagne-inspired. While I can't say that being in the room quite conveyed that (whatever it means) to me, the fridge was prepared to deliver on the premise: The suite comes with a fully stocked Champagne fridge and a fully stocked cocktail bar.

The formal dining room seats 10 people.

Past a 29-foot-wide mural by French artists Alex et Marine is a grand curving staircase that leads up to the next floor, although the suite also has its own private elevator.

The master bedroom suite includes a king bed with luxury imported linens and a pillow menu.

In the master bathroom is a jetted bathtub, microfiber robes and slippers, a bidet, and Molton Brown bath products.

The master bedroom views face north toward the skinny, supertall skyscrapers rising on Billionaires' Row along the southern edge of Central Park.

Read more: I spent a day on NYC's Billionaires' Row. Here's your ultimate guide to one of the city's glitziest streets, which borders Central Park and is home to the most expensive apartment ever sold in the US.

Outside the master suite is a second living area with an additional dining table that seats six people.

There's also a second bedroom with two queen beds, meaning the suite can sleep at least six guests.

Upstairs is a third living room ...

... which opens up to a landscaped and furnished outdoor terrace ...

... that includes a "waterfall spa."

Before my tour, I wasn't totally sure what a waterfall spa was. Turns out, it's a hot tub with a fancy name.

We moved on to the Jewel Suite, which was designed in collaboration with jewelry designer Martin Katz.

The first thing I noticed was an over-the-top, two-story "cascading crystal" chandelier just inside the entryway.

The suite was designed to evoke the feeling of "living in a jewel box," Shenman said.

Indeed, glass display cases next to the chandelier contain more than $1.5 million of Martin Katz jewels.

The Jewel Suite had a much more romantic vibe than the Champagne Suite. The master bedroom was decorated in warm neutral tones with lavender highlights.

The bathroom features plenty of sleek white marble.

Guests staying at the Jewel Suite can book a private consultation with Martin Katz or an associate, which would take place in this room just off the master bedroom.

The suite even comes with a complimentary Martin Katz diamond microband ring.

Like the Champagne Suite, the Jewel Suite includes a second bedroom with two queen beds.

Like the Champagne Suite, the Jewel Suite comes with a kitchenette, but a much larger one than in the Champagne Suite, which was so small that I didn't even bother to take a photo.

While the Champagne Suite seemed to be geared toward those who want to entertain, the Jewel Suite seemed ideal for couples — and the hotel will help set it up for the ultimate proposal, according to Shenman.

The Jewel Suite has its own expansive terrace and hot tub, but unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to look at it, as a guest was about to check in to the suite.

In addition to the tour of the penthouse suites, I got a peek into the hotel's Gold Room, a lavish cocktail bar with original guilt ceilings from 1882.

Several "Gossip Girl" scenes were filmed in this bar.

Down the hall is an opulent ballroom that holds special events such as the hotel's weekend magic shows.

On Friday and Saturday, magician Steve Cohen conducts a show at the hotel of "old fashioned, old world magic," Shenman said.

About 60 people attend each show in cocktail attire. Tickets typically cost between $150 and $200.

According to the hotel, Michael Bloomberg, David Letterman, and Warren Buffet are fans of Cohen's magic show.

I got a look inside Rarities, a 25-seat lounge that's typically only open to a small group of members and their guests.

Membership at Rarities is $15,000 a year, Shenman told me.

When I asked what kinds of people are members, he said only, "A number of prominent people who don't mind spending $15,000 a year."

The membership includes a $5,000 spending credit at the bar and room credits at the hotel.

As the name suggests, Rarities offers some of the world's most rare and expensive liquors and wines.

A two-ounce pour of this Louis XIII rare cask cognac, for example, will cost you about $4,000.

The cognac is a blend of 1,200 cognacs, each of which is over 100 years old.

And a two-ounce glass of a rare Macallan scotch whiskey goes for about $3,000.

In August, the hotel hosts its annual Palace Invitational in its iconic courtyard, a sort of pre-party for the US Open where some of the world's top tennis stars compete in a playful badminton tournament.

I attended the event this year and watched Serena and Venus Williams face off against Rafael Nadal and Cori "Coco" Gauff in the 90-degree heat, while guests in button-up shirts and summer dresses sipped sangria cocktails and rosé and snacked on small bites like Kobe beef sushi.

After my tour of the Lotte New York Palace and its $25,000-a-night penthouse suites, it was clear why the hotel is a New York City institution.

I've visited a $10,000 penthouse suite at the Time Square Edition in Manhattan and I've spent a night at the $18,000-a-night presidential suite at the Moscow Ritz-Carlton.

While those are both cheaper than the Champagne and Jewel suites, one big advantage the Palace suites has over them is the separate lobby and elevator that keeps the Towers and the penthouse suites more private from the rest of the hotel.

The Palace penthouse suites also have huge outdoor spaces, a coveted amenity in New York City. At the Times Square Edition, the terrace is a fraction of the size, and there's no outdoor space at all at the Ritz's presidential suite in Moscow.

However, I did prefer the sleek and calming aesthetic of the Edition suite to the more lavish, dramatic décor of the Palace suites.

I've been sleeping on these $20 AmazonBasics sheets that have more than 20,000 online reviews — here's how they feel

amazonbasics sheets

  • A set of high-end sheets can cost hundreds of dollars. AmazonBasics' sheet set isn't exactly the height of bedding excellence, but it does only cost $20 for a queen size.
  • The set comes in more than 40 colors and prints and includes a fitted sheet, flat sheet, and two pillowcases.
  • It's soft and comfortable, but potential drawbacks are that it's prone to wrinkling and overheating. Still, it's hard to come by a better bedding deal than this $20 set.

There are a lot of different ways to spend $20. You can buy dinner out or a kitchen tool to help you make a meal at home. You can go see a movie. Or, you can sleep comfortably at night.

AmazonBasics, Amazon's private label for affordable everyday essentials, makes sheets for just $20 (the price of a queen size set). The sheet set is one of the best-selling and top-rated on the site, with more than 20,000 reviews, 68% of which are five star reviews. In terms of review cred, it's bested only by this Mellanni set, which is $10 more expensive, and this Sweet Home Collection set, which is a few dollars cheaper.

Like other AmazonBasics products, which include phone accessories and cookware, this sheet set sticks to the basics. There's no marketing story behind it, no fancy, innovative features to wow you. It's a sheet set, plain and simple, and it has exactly the features you'd expect for $20.

Read more: 9 home goods Amazon's store brand, AmazonBasics, carries for less — from $200 memory-foam mattresses to $45 Dutch ovens

amazonbasics sheets 3

Each set includes one fitted sheet, one flat sheet, and two pillowcases. It comes in more than 40 colors and prints, from a cute gingham to a deep burgundy, so it's easy to find a color to suit your personal style. Some even cost less than $20. I already own a good number of lighter colored sheets, so I got a set in Plum

The sheets are made from polyester in an OEKO-Tex Standard 100-certified factory. The fitted sheet was easy to put on my 12-inch tall mattress and stays snug around it. The sheet can fit on mattresses up to 16 inches tall.

Overall, I've had a good experience sleeping on these sheets. They're soft and comfortable, though they're not the most breathable I've tried. Even though I tend not to sleep hot, I can see someone overheating in them. While some reviewers took issue with how thin the sheets were, I personally thought the thickness was fine.

They're also a bit wrinkly and that problem might be exacerbated by the fact that I got a darker color. If you care about the appearance of your sheets, I would suggest getting a lighter color or a printed style.

amazonbasics sheets 4

Comparing these sheets to sets I've tried that cost 10 to 15 times more, I do think there's a noticeable difference. Sheets that I've tried from Casper, Third, and Primary Goods are indeed better — they're softer, more breathable, and more durable.

However, you really can't beat the value of these sheets. Twenty dollars is a great deal for a full sheet set, and I love that there are so many color and print options. The soft and comfortable material might not last a lifetime of uses and washes, but it's the perfect short-term bedding solution for kids' bedrooms, dorms and college apartments, and guest rooms. It's one of the best budget sheet options you can buy online right now, from a brand with a lot of experience making these types of affordable essentials.

More men are freezing their sperm, and it's just more evidence that millennials are defining life milestones on their own terms

Women aren't the only ones feeling the tick of time.

Men, too, are facing the pressure of the biological clock — and they're freezing their sperm as a result, Marisa Dellatto reported for The New York Post.

Elizabeth Cohen also reported on the trend for CNN back in 2016, citing health reasons as a major driver: Studies have shown that as sperm age, they develop genetic mutations which can increase the risk of psychiatric disorders like autism as well as birth defects, she wrote.

At the time, William Hudson, who froze his sperm at age 28, told Cohen the trend was "rare" and "small."

Three years later, Dr. Mark Goldstein, professor and surgeon-in-chief of male reproductive surgery at Weill Cornell Medicine, told Dellatto he's seen an increase in patients who want their sperm tested and frozen. Men also see a decline in sperm quality as they age, contributing to infertility issues in nearly half of couples, he said.

While some millennial men Dellatto spoke to are freezing their sperm before getting a vasectomy so they can stress less during sex, others said they're doing it because they want to have kids — just not right now.

Med school student Felipe Bolivar, 28, told Dellatto he and his girlfriend chose sperm freezing over egg freezing because it was cheaper and an easier procedure.

According to Health.com, the cost of sperm freezing can range from $250 to $1,300.

Read more: The US birthrate is the lowest it's been in 32 years, and it's partly because millennials can't afford having kids

Millennials are delaying marriage and children

Sperm freezing is symptomatic of the fact that American millennials are getting married and having kids later in life, taking more time to find the right partner and prioritizing financial success.

The median age of first marriage in the US is 27 for women and 29 for men, Business Insider's Mark Abadi reported, citing the US Census Bureau. In 1980, for comparison, the median age was 22 for women and 25 for men.

And those who have found the right partner are waiting longer in their relationships to get married — 4.9 years on average, INSIDER's Kristin Salaky reported, citing a 2017 study from Bridebook.

Consequently, the US birthrate is at its lowest in 32 yearsBill Chappell for NPR reported, citing a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. More 30-something women are having babies than women in their 20s for the first time ever — a difference that grew in 2018, according to the CDC report.

As millennials delay childbearing, methods to help the process are becoming more popular. Egg freezing has boomed in recent years to the point where tech companies like Apple, Facebook, and Google offer it as a benefit for female employees, Chris Weller previously reported for Business Insider.

And egg freezing services are popping up to accommodate the rising interest, like the new fertility studio Trellis in New York City, which Business Insider's Katie Warren toured in November 2018.

So, while millennials are putting off having kids for a variety of reasons, one thing is clear: Sperm freezing is the latest in their series of efforts to delay time.

These hangover prevention tablets have been a game-changer for me — here's how they work

hangon hangover prevention 2

  • Nothing ruins what should be a productive workday or relaxing weekend morning like a head-splitting hangover.
  • With HangOn hangover prevention tablets ($20/10-pack), I get to enjoy my night out and wake up with a clear head.
  • The portable, chewable citrus tablets contain antioxidants and amino acids to support liver function, enhance electrolyte absorption, and help your body metabolize and flush out toxins.
  • They're not an excuse to drink irresponsibly, but they give me the peace of mind that I won't feel terrible the morning after a fun happy hour or social event.

The morning-after-happy-hour hangover: It's an adulthood rite of passage that creeps up on you and takes you by surprise. Once upon a time, you were able to have a spontaneous night out, crawl into bed past midnight, and wake up feeling fine. Now you have two beers or glasses of wine and stomp grumpily into the office the next day with a nasty headache.

There are a variety of ways you can avoid this reality, from making sure you drink enough water to going to sleep early, but these methods aren't always guaranteed to work. One hangover prevention solution that I've tried and has consistently worked is HangOn chewable tablets

hangon hangover prevention

The HangOn tablet

The idea for a convenient, effective way to prevent hangovers was conceived by two attorneys who were living and working in South Korea, where the work culture tends to involve heavy drinking. They found many of the hangover prevention drinks available in convenience stores there contained dihydromyricetin (DHM), an extract from the Japanese raisin tree that supports alcohol tolerance

Drinking alcohol suppresses glutamate, a neurotransmitter in the brain. In an attempt to balance out this suppression, your brain produces excess glutamate, which is what leads to headaches and a poor night's sleep. DHM works by limiting that initial suppression of glutamate. So they wanted to figure out how to package DHM, along with other antioxidants and amino acids, into a discreet, portable, and shareable product.

Ultimately, they came up with HangOn, a chewable tablet that tastes like citrus and contains a variety of powerful ingredients to ensure the drinks of tonight don't become the regrets of tomorrow. Here are some of the ingredients in HangOn and what each one does:

hangon hangover prevention 3

How to take HangOn

The tablets come in a pack that resembles that of chewing gum. There are 10 tablets in each pack ($20).

The company recommends taking two tablets at least 30 minutes before you have your first drink. These two tablets should cover up to three alcoholic drinks. For every three additional drinks you have, you should take another two tablets.

Does HangOn really work?

I used HangOn tablets on multiple drinking occasions, and they really did prevent hangovers for a variety of drinks — beer, wine, and cocktails.

From experience, I know how much I need to drink and at what rate for me to wake up with a fuzzy head and an intense appetite for a greasy bacon, egg, and cheese. I was both surprised and very relieved when I woke up with neither of these symptoms. I was also able to sleep more deeply.

These were a major game-changer for midweek happy hours, PR events, and other social events. I like drinking for recreational and business purposes, and HangOn let me enjoy the best of both worlds: the pleasure of drinking, and the clear head and energy to be productive at work the next day. Even for non-work nights, I still took them because it meant I didn't have to waste an entire Sunday morning attempting to recover.

I loved that the tablets were easy to carry around. They fit in small purses, and no one batted an eye when I took them out because they just looked like gum or mints. This design also made them easy to pass around to fellow hangover-prone friends.

However, you may need to write reminders to yourself to take them. I sometimes forgot to take my two pre-drink tablets on time, if at all, and you should still count your drinks to make sure you continue taking the tablets throughout the night.

HangOn tablets aren't a free pass to drink irresponsibly. But if you enjoy drinking and want a reliable way to prevent the dreaded morning after, they're a proven and convenient fix.
