Disneyland employee day in the life

  • Disney California Adventure Park West general manager Gary Maggetti has worked at the Disneyland Resort full-time for 23 years.
  • Before he landed a full-time role, he did a stint as a Jungle Cruise skipper in college.
  • Maggetti shared his typical daily routine — which features a morning pick-me-up of green tea and lots of walking — with Business Insider.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Gary Maggetti's Disneyland journey began long before he landed his first full-time role there in 1995.

Before the iconic resort became his workplace, he was just another kid at the park, swinging by all his favorite attractions with his twin brother Chris. Their family visited Disneyland every two years, starting when they were four.

Then, Maggetti was a Northern Arizona University hotel and restaurant administration major applying for the Disney College Program. He landed a summer gig as a skipper on the Jungle Cruise, one of his favorite rides.

Finally, in 1995, he landed his first full-time role at the park. By that point, Maggetti knew that Disneyland was where he wanted to stay.

Maggetti has held 13 different roles at the Walt Disney Company over the years, including one that took him all the way to Japan. Today, he's a general manager representing the western part of Disney California Adventure Park. Disney California Adventure and Disneyland Park are the two theme parks that make up the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California.

Maggetti said his story isn't "unique" at Disneyland.

"You go to a meeting and you look around the room and it's like: 'Oh my goodness, you were in my management training class in 1996,'" he told Business Insider. "This is not an unusual story because there are so many opportunities with Disney to have different experiences."

Maggetti shared his daily schedule with Business Insider. His routine sheds light on both the culture at Disneyland, and the behind-the-scenes inner-workings of the park.

Maggetti wakes up early and typically passes on coffee

Maggetti kicks off his day at 6 a.m. He's not big on breakfast, but he said that he'll sometimes eat a morning meal with his two teenage sons.

According to Maggetti, the boys take after his twin brother Chris — an executive chef at Disneyland.

"They're actually pretty good cooks, so sometimes they'll make me breakfast in the morning," he told Business Insider.

But two figures are typically absent from the breakfast table: Maggetti said he has a "long distance marriage" with his wife, who lives and works in Northern California with his stepson. The family reunites on the weekends, though.

After breakfast, Maggetti drives his sons to school and then embarks on the 35-minute commute to Disneyland. He usually arrives at work around 8 a.m.

To prepare for the workday, Maggetti skips coffee and instead opts for decaf green tea. He said he prefers the "calming effect" of the beverage.

He meets up with his team mates and enjoys watching the park open

First up, Maggetti heads to his team's morning huddle. Patrick Finnegan, the vice president of Disney California Adventure Park and the Downtown Disney District, leads the daily meeting. Everyone discusses the previous day and establishes a "game plan" for the coming day.

Maggetti said the team often makes a point of huddling out in the park, where they can watch early-bird guests trickle in around 9 a.m.

"It's incredibly enjoyable to be there when the first guests go through the turnstiles," Maggetti said. "There's this sense of adventure and hope and excitement. You can kind of see the guests making decisions early in the day. Like, 'Am I going to the new Incredicoaster?' or 'Am I going to head over to Radiator Springs Racer?' It's great to be a part of that."

Up next, Maggetti learns about any opportunities for his cast members

Once the park is opened, all of the general managers will connect with one of the resort's duty managers for a daily "roll call."

Maggetti said this is his chance to learn about different opportunities for Disney California Adventure Park cast members, such as trying out new attractions before they open to guests.

"They'll let the leaders know, 'Hey make sure your cast members know we have this great experience before the guests arrive,'" Maggetti said.

As general manager, Maggetti has to wear a number of different hats — and shoes

As the general manager of the western region of Disney California Adventure Park, Maggetti's days revolve around everything from managing cast members to dealing with developing and building new attractions in the park.

Maggetti told Business Insider that he often wears a few different hats in his role.

"You've got the hat of day to day operations, and leadership for the cast members in your area, but then you also put on your construction hat," Maggetti said.

He doesn't just switch out hats based on the day. Recently, Maggetti played a major part in the launch of Pixar Pier — an area of the park previously known as Paradise Pier.

"I have my construction shoes in the office that are super dirty, and normal dress shoes," he said.

Being a 'generalist leader' is important at Disneyland, according to Maggetti

At Disneyland Resort, every day is different. Maggetti might find himself checking in with cast members at the park's new Lamplight Lounge restaurant, establishing a new micro-market in one of the break areas, or brainstorming park development opportunities with his direct reports.

As a result, he said managers at Disneyland have got to be capable of handling a wide range of projects and situations.

"Being a generalist leader is a great way for you to get satisfaction out of your role," he said.

Generally, Maggetti's daily schedule varies a lot

On a day-to-day basis, Maggetti's schedule is often up in the air. He said that he often double or triple books meetings, calls, or visits to certain areas of the park.

Maggetti said that he'll then make a final decision on what to do based on his top priorities that day.

Maggetti stays mobile — and often walks up to five miles a day around the park

Maggetti likes to stay mobile throughout the day. He typically walks at least five miles around the park on a daily basis

"I do spend as much time as I can in the parks," Maggetti said. "So I'm a 10,000-steps-a-day person."

Recently, Maggetti actually hit 14 miles in one day, as he darted between venues during a media event.

Maggetti said he's grateful for the exercise and added that his park rounds "help me stay connected with cast members and guests."

He has one major rule when it comes to supporting cast members

"As a leader your main responsibility is to care about your cast members," Maggetti said. "You demonstrate care by asking them what they need — and listening."

He said that "guessing" is the worst thing a leader can do when responding to a cast member's request or question.

"Don't guess," he said. "Go find out and get back to the cast member."

Maggetti also takes time to help out guests

Maggetti's office is behind Cars Land, so he frequently does a lot of walking in the Radiator Springs area. He told Business Insider that he often passes by a particularly photogenic spot, where guests flock to take pictures in front of the park's Cadillac Mountain Range.

"I'll just walk out and ask guests if they want me to take their picture," he said. "Oftentimes dad or mom don't get to be in the picture because they are taking it."

He said getting to interact with the guests and help them make memories at the park is a "magical experience."

Maggetti's two favorite rides both have a nautical theme ...

Maggetti said his all-time favorite ride in the Disneyland Resort is Pirates of the Caribbean.

"It's the one attraction that, when we come as a family, that's the one we do," he said.

But when it comes to his own home base, Disney's California Adventure, he prefers The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Undersea Adventure.

"Part of it is that nostalgia feel," he said. "When The Little Mermaid actually came out, I was kind of reinvested in Disney animation. I was in marching band in high school and we ended up playing a whole show that had music from The Little Mermaid."

...and one of his favorite spots in the park is 'off the beaten path'

When he wants to "decompress," Maggetti will head over to the spot behind Harbor Galley where the Sailing Ship Columbia docks. He said the the area is "off the beaten path" and has a few tables that most guests don't know about.

"It's the area where all the Splash Mountain logs splashdown," he said. "If you're standing on this little bridge, you can hear the peals of laughter and excitement. You don't see the guests you only kind of see the raft floating by and the top of their heads."

"If you close your eyes and you realize you're in Disneyland and all this happiness is around you — no matter what kind of day I'm having, if I walk out there, it is amazing."

Maggetti usually skips — or at least postpones — eating lunch

Taking lunch at the usual time is a bit tricky at Disneyland, as noon to 2 p.m. are peak visiting hours at the park. Maggetti said he sometimes grab a meal later in the afternoon.

But, on Wednesdays, he'll just have a snack prior before heading to a weekly staff meeting. The marathon session goes from noon to 5 p.m.

He doesn't plan too far ahead

Maggetti typically heads out around 6 or 6:30 p.m. He leaves having a good idea of what the next day's going to look like, but he said that he doesn't plan beyond a few days in advance.

"I know exactly what's happening today and I know exactly what's happening tomorrow," he said. "But I know that in this business things change on a dime. Things change very, very quickly."

On Fridays, Maggetti makes the trip to Northern California

On most nights, Maggetti spends the evening hanging out with his sons. On Fridays, however, he'll fly up to Northern California to visit his wife and stepson.

Once the weekend is over, Maggetti heads back on an early morning Monday flight.

"When my wife and I talk to our families about it, they think, 'How do you guys do all this?'" Maggetti said. "At the end of the day we just do. That's just what we do, that's how we work our weeks. Certainly absence makes the heart grow fonder. I'm always excited to see her, but we do certainly wish we were living in the same house."

Most evenings, he'll play some ping pong with his sons

On week nights, Maggetti will catch up with his sons over cooking and games of ping pong.

In fact, he said his younger son will often greet him by saying, "We'll need a game of ping pong."

Afterwards, he'll head to the kitchen.

"My oldest son and I will cook together, and then we'll FaceTime with my wife," he said. "So well stay connected that way."

After dinner, he'll unwind by watching TV and doing some chores

He also might watch an episode of "Modern Family" with his sons "that we've seen a billion times — we can quote every line."

Later in the evening, Maggetti said he unwinds by doing chores.

"This is going to sound weird, but I love doing laundry," he said. "I find it a great way to decompress and think about the day that is nearly concluding and about what I need to focus on for the next morning."

On most nights, Maggetti is usually asleep by 10:30 or 11 p.m.

Working at Disneyland has been a dream come true for Maggetti

Maggetti said that he still has "powerful memories" of his childhood visits to Disneyland with his brother. So for both of them to grow up to work at the resort for so many years has been pretty poetic.

According to Maggetti, basing his career at Disneyland "took the magic that I had known as a child to a completely different level."

McDonald's employees share the 4 menu items they'd never eat (MCD)

McDonald's employee

The McDonald's menu has plenty of offerings for fast-food fans and casual customers alike.

But, when it comes to consuming McDonald's food, the restaurant's crew members are probably the most insightful of the bunch. They don't just cook the meals; many of them take advantage of their employee discounts and chow down on the food while on break, according to Quora users who previously worked at the chain.

But that doesn't mean they'll just eat anything at McDonald's.

Read more: McDonald's is testing a veggie burger made with Beyond Meat, but it isn't 100% vegan

Business Insider spoke with several current and former crew members to find out what orders they tended to pass on and why. Most of the preferences came down to nutrition and personal taste.

Here's a look at some of McDonald's employees' least favorite orders:

The chain's famous, fishy sandwich

The McDonald's Filet-O-Fish sandwich has a storied history. It was the first new non-hamburger item added to the fast-food giant's nation-wide menu in 1965.

The sandwich has since become iconic, and it's responsible for a whole bunch of piscine imitators. Business Insider's Mary Hanbury reported that the Filet-O-Fish is a massive hit during Lent, when many Catholics fast from meat on Fridays.

It's one of President Donald Trump's favorites, too. He's known to put away two of the fish sandwiches at a time, along with two Big Macs and a large chocolate shake.

But that doesn't matter much to two crew members who spoke with Business Insider.

One former crew member from Virginia described viewing the Filet-O-Fish as a meal popular with older customers "because I assume it's easy for them to chew," but the crew member personally didn't like the taste of the sandwich.

Another crew member told Business Insider that they found the fish sandwich "generally gross" according to their personal taste.

Some of the greener options on the menu

A crew member from Minnesota told Business Insider that they steered clear of a batch of the chain's ostensibly healthier options: the salads.

"I'm not a fan of tons of vegetables, and the caloric count in the items is astronomical," the crew member told Business Insider.

The Southwest buttermilk crispy chicken salad comes in at 520 calories, the bacon ranch salad with buttermilk crispy chicken boasts 490 calories, and the bacon ranch grilled chicken salad has 320 calories.

For comparison, a Big Mac sandwich is 540 calories.

The chain's side salad is only 50 calories, however, for customers looking for a leaner, leafy option.

The menu's ostensibly healthier chicken sandwich

Two McDonald's crew members told Business Insider they steered clear of the chain's grilled chicken sandwiches because they were slathered in margarine at the time and therefore less healthy than they appeared.

Anything new on the menu

A former general manager told Business Insider that they always avoided "new menu items," as they preferred to "stick to the basics" at McDonald's.

The family behind OxyContin reportedly just made $60 million from a real-estate deal. Meet the Sacklers, who built their $13 billion fortune off the controversial prescription drug.

The Sacklers are one of the wealthiest families in the US, with an estimated fortune of $13 billion, but they may not be for much longer.

Purdue Pharma, the pharmaceutical company owned by members of the Sackler family, has filed for bankruptcy as part of a tentative settlement agreement in thousands of lawsuits over what accusers say is misleading marketing of Purdue Pharma's controversial painkiller, OxyContin, that's been partly responsible for the US opioid crisis. The settlement requires the owners of Purdue Pharma, members of the Sackler family, to pay $3 billion of their own fortune in cash over the next seven years.

"Purdue Pharma continues to work with all plaintiffs on reaching a comprehensive resolution to its opioid litigation that will deliver billions of dollars and vital opioid overdose rescue medicines to communities across the country impacted by the opioid crisis," the company said in a statement emailed to Business Insider.

In September, in the midst of the court proceedings, members of the family closed a deal that earned them about $60 million from the sale of 17 ski resorts in the Northeast and Midwest, Washington Post's Christopher Rowland reported.

The source of the family's wealth is OxyContin, the prescription painkiller that many say has fueled the US opioid crisis. Purdue Pharma has faced thousands of lawsuits over what accusers say is misleading marketing of OxyContin that contributed to opioid-related deaths.

Here's a look at the secretive and controversial family.

DON'T MISS: Meet Bernard and Lisa Selz, the wealthy New York City couple who have donated millions to the anti-vax movement

The Sackler family is one of the richest families in the US.

In 2016, Forbes estimated their net worth at a "conservative" $14 billion, beating out famously wealthy families such as the Mellons and the Rockefellers. More recent estimates put the figure at $13 billion. They own Purdue Pharma, a pharmaceutical company in Connecticut.

The vast majority of the Sackler fortune comes from a well-known prescription painkiller that Purdue Pharma launched in 1996, OxyContin.

By 2001, sales of the drug made up about 80% of Purdue Pharma's revenue.

OxyContin is seen as partly to blame for the opioid crisis sweeping the US.

More than 130 people in the US die each day after overdosing on opioids, including prescription pain relievers, heroin, and synthetic opioids such as fentanyl, according to the National Institute of Drug Abuse.

A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report in July indicated that overdose deaths actually dropped 5% from 2017 to 2018, the first year-to-year decline since 1990.

Purdue Pharma, which generates $3 billion in annual sales, has faced hundreds of lawsuits over what accusers say is misleading marketing about the risks of addiction when taking OxyContin.

The Sackler family still completely owns the company, and the multibillion-dollar fortune is shared among 20 or so family members. The family fortune has been estimated at $13 billion, but, as The New York Times reported, the exact number is unknown as Purdue Pharma is a private company.

On September 11, the New York Times reported that the owners of Purdue Pharma — including members of the Sackler family — reached a tentative settlement agreement.

The settlement requires the Sacklers to pay $3 billion of their own fortune in cash over the next seven years, The Times reported.

On September 15, The Washington Post reported that Purdue Pharma had filed for bankruptcy. The Chapter 11 filing came as part of a tentative settlement of more than 2,000 lawsuits against the pharmaceutical company for between $10 billion and $12 billion.

The proposed settlement includes the Sackler family giving up ownership of the company and turning it into a for-profit "public benefit trust" that would provide $4 billion in drugs — some of which are used to save people from overdoses — to cities, counties, and states, according to NBC News.

The deal would also include $3 billion in cash from the Sackler family, Bloomberg reported.

In a statement released on September 16, the Sackler family said:

"It is our hope the bankruptcy reorganization process that is now underway will end our ownership of Purdue and ensure its assets are dedicated for the public benefit ... We are hopeful that in time, those parties who are not yet supportive will ultimately shift their focus to the critical resources that the settlement provides to people and problems that need them."

Despite the tentative settlement, Purdue Pharma continues to deny any wrongdoing. In a statement to Business Insider, the company said: "While Purdue Pharma is prepared to defend itself vigorously in the opioid litigation, the company has made clear that it sees little good coming from years of wasteful litigation and appeals."

The company declined to comment on any further details of the proposed settlement to Business Insider.

Later in September, members of the family reportedly finalized a deal that earned them about $60 million from the sale of 17 ski resorts in the Northeast and Midwest, The Washington Post reported.

"Many of the ski areas in the transaction sit in places that have been hit hard by prescription narcotic abuse over the past 20 years, including those in New Hampshire, as well as hills in Vermont, the Catskills in New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania," Christopher Rowland reported for the Post.

The deal included the sale of Attitash Mountain Ski Area and Wildcat Mountain Resort, both in New Hampshire.

Members of the Sackler family bought stock in Peak Resorts Inc., the company that sold the ski resorts, in 2011, according to the Post.

Representatives for the Sackler family and for Purdue Pharma did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment regarding the deal.

The Sacklers are far from a tight-knit family.

The Guardian described them in 2018 as "a sprawling and now feuding transatlantic dynasty."  According to a 2017 article from The New Yorker, there are 15 Sackler children in the generation following the founders of Purdue.

While some Sacklers previously served as board members of Purdue Pharma, others, notably those descended from the eldest brother, Arthur M. Sackler, who died before OxyContin was invented, have distanced themselves from the company and condemned the OxyContin-based wealth, according to The Guardian. On September 18, a representative for Purdue Pharma told Business Insider that no Sackler family members have served on Purdue Pharma's board since January 2019.

The pharmaceutical empire began when the brothers Mortimer and Raymond Sackler took over a small pharmaceutical company in New York City's Greenwich Village called Purdue Frederick as cochairmen.

It later became Purdue Pharma.

Arthur, the oldest Sackler brother, worked in pharmaceutical marketing and became one of the world's leading collectors of Asian art.

He died in 1987 at age 73, before OxyContin was invented. His descendants split off from the rest of the family years ago and are "mere multimillionaires," according to Esquire.

Arthur's four children, Elizabeth Sackler, Carol Master, Arthur Felix Sackler, and Denise Marica, have said they have not made any money from OxyContin.

Elizabeth, a board member of the Brooklyn Museum, where she endowed the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art, has called the OxyContin-based wealth of her family members "morally abhorrent."

A 2018 investigation by The Atlantic found a court document that showed a nearly $20 million payment to Arthur M. Sackler's estate in 1997 from the Purdue family of companies, suggesting his descendants did benefit in some way from OxyContin.

In an email to Business Insider, Janet Wootten, a spokeswoman for Jillian Sackler, widow of Arthur M. Sackler, denied that Jillian, Arthur, or their heirs have financially profited from the sale of OxyContin.

Mortimer Sackler, the middle son who was one of Purdue Pharma's chief executives, died in 2010 at age 93. He left behind his third wife, Theresa Sackler, and seven children, three of whom were board members of Purdue Pharma, according to The Guardian. A rep for Purdue Pharma told Business Insider that no Sackler family members have served on Purdue's board since January 2019.

Theresa is heavily involved in philanthropic work. In 2011, she received the Prince of Wales Medal for Art Philanthropy.

One of those former board members is his son, also named Mortimer.

The other two are the daughters Kathe Sackler, who is also the founder and president of the Acorn Foundation for the Arts & Sciences, and Ilene Sackler Lefcourt, the director of the Sackler Lefcourt Center for Child Development.

The elder Mortimer's other four children — Samantha Sophia, Michael, Marissa, and Sophie — are apparently not involved in the company.

Marissa Sackler, who considers herself a "social entrepreneur," is the founder of Beespace, a nonprofit that supports organizations such as the Malala Fund.

Sophie Sackler is married to a British cricket player, with whom she lives in a $40 million house in London, according to The New Yorker.

Raymond Sackler, Purdue Pharma's other former chief executive, died in 2017 at age 97. He had two children: Jonathan and Richard.

Both were board members at Purdue Pharma, The Guardian reported in February 2018.

Richard's son and Raymond's grandson, David, was also a board member.

Richard Sackler reportedly lives in a six-bedroom home in Austin, Texas.

The home in the Westlake neighborhood of Austin comes with a pool and views of Lake Austin.

His son, David Sackler, paid cash for a $22.5 million home in Los Angeles in 2018, according to Curbed.

The 10,000-square-foot estate sits on four acres in the Bel Air neighborhood, according to Curbed, and includes a tennis court and a pool.

David is married to Joss Sackler, the founder of a private social club and clothing company for women.

Joss is the founder of LBV, a private social club that costs $2,500 a year in dues to be a core member. The club also recently launched its own fashion line.

Raymond's granddaughter, Madeleine Sackler, is an award-winning filmmaker.

In response to criticism related to her family background, she said she had "never worked at the company or had any influence in it."

"The Sacklers have hidden their connection to their product," Keith Humphreys, a psychiatry professor at Stanford University who has written extensively about the opioid crisis, told Esquire.

"They don't call it 'Sackler Pharma,'" Humphreys said. "They don't call their pills 'Sackler pills.' And when they're questioned, they say, 'Well, it's a privately held firm, we're a family, we like to keep our privacy, you understand.'"

But the family is well-known for their philanthropic endeavors, with their names visibly emblazoned on hospital wings and museum galleries.

In a 2017 New Yorker article about the Sacklers titled "The Family That Built an Empire of Pain," Patrick Radden Keefe noted the Sacklers were well-known for their philanthropy.

The Sacklers reportedly donated $3.5 million to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City in 1974 to create the Sackler Wing, where the Ancient Egyptian Temple of Dendur sits.

On May 15, 2019, however, the Met announced it would stop taking gifts from the Sacklers.

Many other institutions including nonprofits, museums, and universities have recently cut ties with the Sackler family over the opioid crisis.

There's a Sackler Center at the Guggenheim in New York City, as well as a Sackler Educational Lab at the American Museum of Natural History.

The family's influence on art extends beyond New York City. There's a Sackler Gallery at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.

According to Esquire, at Yale University, there's a Raymond and Beverly Sackler Institute for Biological, Physical and Engineering Sciences and a Richard Sackler and Jonathan Sackler Professorship of Internal Medicine.

And in London, there's the Serpentine Sackler Gallery.

There's even a type of rose named after a Sackler.

Some have suggested the Sacklers should instead put their money toward helping those affected by opioid addiction, The New Yorker's Patrick Radden Keefe reported.

California just legalized college athlete pay — with the help of LeBron James. Here's how the NBA icon became one of America's most influential labor activists.

Lebron James

  • California governor Gavin Newsom just signed into law a plan that allows college athletes get paid for endorsement deals, an act barred by the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
  • LeBron James as actively advocated for allowing college athletes get paid, part of his larger effort to decrease NCAA restrictions on paying players and agents.
  • James has advocated for player rights throughout his career — from opening doors for players to switch teams easily, to structuring NBA contracts for greater flexibility and higher salaries.
  • The three-time NBA champion also created several media endeavours that center player voices and allow them to advocate for themselves, instead of through the mouths of media pundits.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

California just took a revolutionary step in allowing college athletes get paid for their labor by allowing them to make money from endorsements. Governor Gavin Newsom legalized a bill that allows student-athletes be paid from from the use of their names, images, and likenesses starting in 2023.

NBA superstar LeBron James helped lead the fight for paying players — even though he never went to college himself.

In fact, as the country's most famous male athlete, James has helped spark the era of "player empowerment" in the first place.

"The idea of athlete autonomy — of a player having more control and power over his or her own career, of not just being an employee of an owner who is not the one out running and dunking — has caught on in the public consciousness in a way it had failed to before," Will Leitch, noted sports journalist and the founder of Deadspin, wrote for NBC News. "James' move [to Miami] was the instigating act."

Here are all the ways James has advocated for player and labor rights during his career:

SEE ALSO: The Magic Johnson-Lakers fiasco is a case study in how not to be a transformational leader

James just has long supported one of the most controversial topics in college sports: paying players.

California governor Gavin Newsom just signed the "Fair Pay to Play Act," a law that allows college athletes to get paid for endorsements. The legislation bypasses an NCAA ban on players receiving any money outside of scholarships.

"Every single student in the university can market their name, image and likeness; they can go and get a YouTube channel, and they can monetize that," Newsom said in an interview with The New York Times. "The only group that can't are athletes. Why is that?"

James brought Newsom on his show "The Shop" to formally sign the bill. Even before the bill passed, James urged California residents to call their representative and vocalize their support for the bill, calling it a "game changer." Bernie Sanders piggybacked on James' statement.

"College athletes are workers," Sanders said in a tweet. "Pay them."

Currently, the NCAA gives Division I players full scholarships to cover tuition, housing, books, and more. Division II players may get lesser scholarships, and Division III players don't get anything.

NCAA president Mark Emmert said paying football and basketball players would eliminate other sports, as the first two get the most attention. He also spoke out against the California bill, threatening to ban the state's schools from competing in NCAA championships.

The NBA star produced a documentary highlighting the financial difficulties college athletes face. The film criticized the NCAA's refusal to pay players for their labor.

The HBO documentary Student Athlete broadcasts stories from college players struggling to get by without financial compensation from the NCAA. One former Rutgers football player works part-time jobs after graduating and tells filmmakers he sleeps in his car.

The documentary advocates for paying college players for their labor.

"The coaches are making millions of dollars and they're coaching players whose parents live below the poverty line," former college football coach John Shoop — a vocal NCAA critic who got fired from Purdue— said in the film. "If you're a reasonable person, it's insane to build a $150 million recruiting facility, pay your head coach $10 million, the rest of your staff $20 million cumulative, but then say there's not enough money to help the players."

In a tweet, James said he helped start the fight to pay college players with the documentary and he's "just getting started."

James again clashed with NCAA earlier this summer after he criticized a rule that would prevent non-college graduates from representing players.

The NCAA released a memo detailing new requirements for agents representing college players, including a mandatory bachelor's degree.

James quickly criticized the rule for discriminating against non-college graduates. He helped dub the controversial requirement the "Rich Paul Rule" after his own agent, Rich Paul of Klutch Sports, who does not have a bachelor's degree.

Six hours after James retweeted Paul's statement against the requirement, the NCAA reversed the decision and no longer required agents to have college degrees.

James' advocacy for player empowerment didn't start recently. His decision to form a super team in Miami helped lead to greater player independence during the offseason.

In 2010, James went on TV to announce his "Decision" to take his talents to South Beach via televion special.

A media frenzy soon followed, as pundits criticized how publicly he decided to talk about his decision during the one-hour special. In 2011, Business Insider described him as the most hated man in sports.

"'The Decision' gave the impression that [James] was bigger than the sport, and I think people looked at that and didn't like it," former NBA player and analyst Kenny Smith said.

While players had joined together to form a super-teams in the past, James' move got heat for taking too much control of his narrative.

"'The Decision' was about power," The Ringer's Bryan Curtis wrote. "It was an early sign the players could seize control of the media."

Now, players "routinely take control of announcing their big career decisions and craft essays to explain themselves," writes ESPN's Brian Windhorst.

James opened the door for players to freely choose where they want to play.

In 2016, fellow MVP Kevin Durant shocked the basketball world by leaving the Oklahoma City Thunder for the Golden State Warriors. His decision also garnered media outcry, though for slightly different reasons — he left to a team that only narrowly beat his Thunder in the 7-game Western Conference Championship.

Durant later said he looked at James' decision to leave Cleveland before he chose to leave OKC. This offseason, free agent players moved teams freely, often opting to team up with friends, like Russell Westbrook's move to James Harden's Houston Rockets — or Durant again moving on to join Kyrie Irving and the Brooklyn Nets.

"He paved the way," Durant told Bleacher Report's Howard Beck of James.

From Kobe Bryant to Michael Jordan, top NBA players that stuck with the teams that drafted them were deemed as "loyal" for their decision— yet NBA executives have never stopped cutting ties with players they no longer have use for.

Now, players can take advantage of the higher salary caps and endorsement deals that come with switching teams. And since NBA success revolves around winning a championship, many players will leave for the teams that guarentee wins.

"The money has made it easier (to leave)," former general manager Billy King told B/R. "Now a guy's going to maybe make $140 million to leave, as opposed to $180 million to stay. It's a lot of money (to sacrifice), but $140 million is big money, too. I think guys don't even look at the money as much anymore when they're making that decision."

And LeBron, of course, has chosen to finish the final act of this career in Hollywood.

James' one-year deals also established that he was in control of where he wants to play, not the organization.

After returning to the Cleveland Cavaliers — an organization whose president called James' move to the Heat a "cowardly betrayal"— the player became the first superstar to ask for one-year deals under the current NBA collective bargaining agreement, according to Cleveland.com.

The decision kept the Cavs on their toes, knowing their franchise player could leave again whenever he wanted. The one-year deals also earned him more money due to increasing salary caps.

While only NBA players with the skill and the visibility to leverage a one-year deal the way James did, he "nevertheless exposed a loophole in the current system, and swayed, however marginally, the balance of power from NBA front offices toward players when it comes to contracts and building rosters," wrote Cleveland.com's Joe Vardon.

James founded his own media company to give players a platform to advocate for themselves.

Many of the James' media endeavours center around giving players a voice and letting them speak for themselves.

The Shop, an HBO series created by James, features the superstar talking candidly with athletes and celebrities at a barber shop — one recent episode featured comedian Kevin Hart, tight end Rob Gronkowski, viral rap star Lil Nas X, and James's former teammate Kevin Love.

Uninterrupted, too, gives athletes a platform to express themselves. The platform, in partnership with Bleacher Report, lets athletes post videos speaking on whatever topics they'd like.

"I wanted athletes to feel like they had power, they had the platform to speak about whatever they wanted to speak about," James said of the platform to The Undefeated's Jerry Bembry, "and not have it cut, diced and split into soundbites where people could use it to how they wanted to use it."

This 2-sided mattress by Brooklyn Bedding is the only truly firm one I've found since returning from Asia — if 'firm' is never firm enough for you, this one might actually work

  • After living in Taiwan for a spell, I had come to the conclusion that, by and large, no truly firm mattress existed in the western hemisphere.
  • Then Brooklyn Bedding's Plank Mattress arrived on the scene.
  • It's not only impressively (and, finally, sufficiently) firm, but it comes with "firm" and "ultra-firm" sides so you can find your own happy medium, or even switch back and forth if you so desire.
  • The Plank's price is also highly competitive on the "bed-in-a-box" market, ranging from $699 (twin) to $1,249 (California king).
  • See also: The best mattresses you can buy

Ever since I returned west after living in Asia, I've sought after a bed as firm as my favorite apartment there, which is to say something between a washboard and a poured concrete floor. Why, you wonder? No, I'm not a sadist, exactly. I just found that, especially while working upwards of 70 hours a week, seven days a week, it was suddenly much, much easier to wake up in the morning. And that was before I'd hook up my bedside intravenous caffeine solution.

Slinking into the sack for a precious few hours of sleep, you don't want to fool yourself into a slouch, from which nothing short of a backhoe truck can recover you, particularly if you tend to sleep on your back or stomach.

I'm a crash-where-you-fall sort of sleeper, and can be found slumbering in just about any position there is, but I probably wake up on my stomach most often.

The mattress connoisseurs over at Sleepopolis suggest that a firm mattress is generally more comfortable for most people, or at least those without considerable back injuries or pain: "For those not experiencing troublesome back pain, a firm mattress is will generally be more comfortable. When sleeping on a firmer surface, the bones absorb most of the pressure, meaning there is less stress on muscles, veins, and arteries. Muscles are less strained, and circulation is improved."

That article also goes on to point out that firmer mattresses, naturally, have less give, offering more lower-back support, which, in turn, leads to better, deeper breathing and oxygen flow. You know, that stuff that gives us our mammalian vitality.

But I've been sleeping on so-called "firm" mattresses in North America for most of my life, and I'd always felt that they sagged too much. I found myself lying on the cold hard floor to adjust my back at the beginning and end of a day. When I learned that Brooklyn Bedding was introducing Plank mattress, an eastern-hemisphere-inspired firm mattress, my ears perked up and my interest piqued. Tell me more, I demanded of the brand's gracious PR representative. A week later, the Plank mattress was at my door.

If "firm" isn't ever firm enough...

So as I was saying, I've missed my mattress in Taiwan that seemed to make a handful of hours' shuteye feel somehow sufficient, and I have since (inactively) kept an eye out for something of equal or greater value to me. This bed, whatever it was called, was so firm that the first and only time I jumped upon it, I had to check to make sure I hadn't broken anything (on myself). It was perfect. Again, I assure you, I'm not a sadist. And so on.

So, I lugged the Plank upstairs, cut it open, watched it inflate, and threw it on my bed frame, with the "ultra-firm" side up. I knew from the outset that I was going all in, and while I probably ought to have flipped it for your sake, I cannot feign having done it. No, the sleep on the "ultra-firm" side of the Plank was just too good (the brand calls it a 12/10 on the firmness scale, while the regular "firm" is rated as 10/10).

This is a fairly technical spring-free bed in a box with several layers at work. Of course, there are the two sides, but there's also a two-inch latex alternative foam (the brand's proprietary TitanFlex) for deep compression support, a seven-inch, high-density base foam for stability and durability, a one-inch layer of quilted memory foam to resist body impressions, and 1.5-inch and .75-inch quilted top layers on the firm and ultra-firm sides, respectively.

Plank offers an optional cooling mattress topper sewn into the bed, but I'd advise you opt out and just buy this cooling mattress pad by them instead, which I use (and love) on all my beds. That way, should tragedy strike, you can just toss it and not have to live with any embarrassing stains.

And, like other comparable and noteworthy brands, Plank (and Brooklyn Bedding) offers a 120-night risk-free trial and a 10-year warranty, so if you're really not happy, you have plenty of time to call the brand up and have them haul it away, which is not bad, especially when contrasted with the box-and-spring mattress woes of yore.

The bottom line

Short of sleeping on a hardwood floor, this is the most supportive and corrective mattress I've found in my trials of over half a dozen "bed-in-a-box" mattresses.

But then maybe I'm an outlier. I wasn't sure, so I enlisted the opinions (and sleeping expertise) of various friends and trusted guests.

My favorite, and perhaps the most succinct response (there were several overwhelmingly laconic responses along the lines of "good", which doesn't count for a lot), came from an old friend who lives aboard a 43-foot sloop in the lagoons and bays of Fiji: "I thought gentle rocking and a shot of rum were must-haves for my zzz's. Owen's house didn't move, he was out of rum, and I slept in way past our planned fishing trip, so I guess sleeping on the Plank proved me wrong!"

Nintendo Switch Mario game

  • To connect a Nintendo Switch to your TV, all you need to do is plug in two cables and press the power button.
  • The Switch will not connect to the TV until you plug the charging cable and HDMI cable into the dock, and then put your Switch into the dock.
  • If you've plugged everything in but it still won't connect, make sure that the Switch is on, and that you're tuned to the right HDMI input on your TV.
  • A Nintendo Switch Lite can't be connected to your TV — it's an exclusively handheld console.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

It's so easy to connect a Nintendo Switch to a TV that you might think you're missing something. All you need to do is plug in two cables, and connect your Switch to the dock.

That is, if you have an original Switch. If you have a Nintendo Switch Lite, you're stuck in handheld mode. It can't connect to a TV, even if you have a dock set up.

But if you do run into trouble trying to connect your original Nintendo Switch to a TV, it's usually an easy fix. Here's what you'll need to fix it.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Nintendo Switch (From $299.99 at Best Buy)

Nintendo Switch Lite (From $199.99 at Best Buy)

How to connect a Nintendo Switch to your TV

To connect the Switch to a TV:

1. Open the back panel on the docking unit's base.

2. Plug in the USB-C power cable (also called the AC adapter), and the HDMI cable into their slots.

IMG_5753

3. Connect the USB-C cable to a power outlet.

4. Plug the HDMI cable into one of the HDMI ports on your television. Make a note of what number the port is labeled with — it should usually be anywhere between one and five.

IMG_5754

5. Slide the Nintendo Switch console into the dock, and make sure that it fits into the small USB-C plug that's built into the middle of the dock.

6. Press the circular power button on top of your Switch.

7. If your TV doesn't switch automatically, use your remote control or the buttons on your TV to switch to the HDMI input channel that matches the port you plugged the HDMI cable into. Usually you'll do this by pressing the "Source" button on your remote.

The Switch's display should appear on your TV.

IMG_5756

If you're having trouble getting it to display, first make sure that everything is plugged in properly, including the Switch into its dock. Then, cycle through your TV's HDMI channels slowly, giving each one a few seconds to load. By the time you get back to the correct HDMI channel, it should work.

If you're still having issues, you should contact Nintendo support.

How to charge a Nintendo Switch console in 2 ways, and keep playing while it charges

$

nintendo switch

  • There are two ways to charge a Nintendo Switch console, and both allow you to play while you're charging.
  • When your Switch is in its dock, even if you're playing on the TV, the console will be charging via the power cable connected to the dock.
  • You can also plug a USB-C charging cable directly into the Switch while you're playing it in handheld mode.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

The Nintendo Switch's portability sets it apart from all other home consoles. Even after you disconnect it from its screen, you can keep playing, no matter where you go.

But if your Switch runs out of battery, the fun is over until you get back to a power source. And unfortunately, the Switch's battery life isn't tremendously long — on an original Nintendo Switch, you'll usually get between three and nine hours of active use, depending on how hardware intensive the game you're playing is. The Switch Lite will give you three to seven hours.

However, charging your Switch back to full power only takes about three and a half hours. And you can always keep playing while the console is connected to power. Here's how.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Nintendo Switch (From $299.99 at Best Buy)

Nintendo Switch Lite (From $199.99 at Best Buy)

How to charge a Nintendo Switch

To charge an original Nintendo Switch using the docking station, which also allows you to connect the system to a TV:

1. Connect the provided USB-C charging cable to an AC outlet, and to the USB-C port found in the back of the Switch's dock.

IMG_5753

2. Slide the Switch console into the dock, so that the USB-C plug set into the dock enters the port on the bottom of the Switch.

If you want to play the Switch in handheld mode, or you own a Nintendo Switch Lite, just plug the USB-C cable directly into the base of the Switch console.

'What is AQI on an Apple Watch?': How to view the Air Quality Index on your Apple Watch with the AQI complication

$

Apple Watch

  • Your Apple Watch can display the AQI with a complication on most watch faces.
  • AQI stands for Air Quality Index, which is how the EPA and other government agencies describe the relative safety of local air quality.
  • AQI is measured with a numeric scale that goes from 0 to 500, with lower numbers being safer.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Your Apple Watch includes a complication called AQI, which reports on the Air Quality Index for your location.

It's easy to add this complication to many watch faces, so you can keep tabs on the local air quality with just a glance.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Apple Watch Series 5 (From $399 at Best Buy)

What AQI is on an Apple Watch, and how it's measured

The Air Quality Index is a standard way of reporting air quality used by many government agencies, such as the Environmental Protection Agency in the US.  It's a numeric scale that goes from 0 to 500, in which the lower the number, the better the air quality.

The EPA calculates the AQI based on five major air pollutants: ozone, particulates, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide.

Here are the major AQI categories according to the EPA:

  • 0 to 50. Air quality is considered "good," and air pollution posts "little or no risk." This is color coded green.

aqi 1

  • 51 to 100. Air quality is "moderate," and "there may be a moderate health concern for a very small number of people." This is color coded yellow.
  • 101 to 150. This range is "unhealthy for sensitive groups." The EPA says that individuals with lung disease, older adults, and children may be at a greater risk from exposure to ozone. Persons with heart and lung disease may be at greater risk from the presence of particles in the air. This is color coded orange.
  • 151 to 200. This is "unhealthy," and everyone may experience adverse health effects. This is color coded red.
  • 201 to 300. "Very unhealthy." This level would trigger a health alert. This is color coded purple.
  • 301 to 500. The EPA calls this "hazardous," and considers this level an emergency. It is color coded maroon.

How to use the AQI complication on your Apple Watch

If you choose a watch face with the AQI complication, you can see the AQI number at a glance.

To get more information, tap the complication, and you'll see the AQI, the description (such as "Good" or "Moderate") and where your AQI falls on a color scale from green to maroon.

The rich are everywhere. But you can find nearly three-quarters of them across just 10 countries.

Seventy-two percent of the global ultra-wealthy population (265,490 individuals) was spread across 10 countries in 2018, according to Wealth-X's 2019 World Ultra Wealth Report. The report analyzed data from Wealth-X's global database of more than one million records of the world's richest people.

Read more: These are the 15 hottest destinations billionaires are traveling to in 2019

It defines the world's ultra-wealthy population as those with $30 million or more in net worth. While the top 10 countries added a net 1,365 ultra-wealthy individuals since 2017, the combined net worth of all on the list declined by $362 billion (1.5%). However, these changes are close to the global average.

Take a look at which countries worldwide have the biggest ultra-wealthy populations, ranked in ascending order. Note that Hong Kong ranked in both Wealth-X's top countries and top cities lists, as it's a semi-autonomous, special administrative region of China.

Whether you're working on a college essay, typing a work report, or working on a novel, it's helpful to know how exactly how many words you're putting to virtual paper. Maybe you have to fit a word limit, or you're challenging yourself to write a certain amount of words per day.

Whatever the reason, Google Docs' word count feature is a great way to do this. It doesn't matter if you're using Google Docs on your desktop or laptop, or writing on the go via the mobile app — the word count feature can be accessed on both computers and mobile devices.

After cleaning out my closet, I realized all my favorite clothes came from personal styling services — here's why they're such a smart way to shop

stitch fix trunk club most worn

  • Personal styling services such as Stitch Fix and Trunk Club combine the convenience of online shopping with the expert curation of a personal stylist.
  • Many of my favorite, most-worn clothing pieces — outerwear, jeans, tops, and dresses — are from Stitch Fix and Trunk Club.
  • Using these services has been one of my smartest shopping decisions because they save time, effort, and money.

As I spent an afternoon cleaning out my closet recently, I noticed an emerging pattern: All the clothing I wanted to keep, the pieces I wore often and knew I would continue wearing, came from personal styling services.

Personal styling services such as Stitch Fix and Trunk Club combine the convenience of online shopping with the expert curation of a personal stylist.

In 2017, I tested Stitch Fix for the first time, and continued paying for and using it for a few months thereafter. In 2018, I tried its Nordstrom-owned competitor, Trunk Club, and similarly, continued paying for and using it in my personal life.

Being a Stitch Fix and Trunk Club member over the last couple years has proven to be one of the smartest shopping decisions I've made for my closet. Here's why:

1. It saves time and effort.

Using a personal styling service initially requires some investment of time because you need to fill out a style profile and share your clothing sizes, style preferences, and other notes about what types of clothes you're looking for. From there, however, the process becomes quick and streamlined, especially as you become a more experienced user.

Stitch Fix and Trunk Club ship you boxes of clothing that fit your profile. You can try on everything in the comfort of your own home and on your own time, so you don't have to deal with all the time-consuming parts of shopping in person.

Stitch Fix gives you three days to decide what you want to keep and return, while Trunk Club gives you five days. Both include a bag and prepaid shipping label for your returns.

stitch fix trunk club most worn

2. It saves money and is less wasteful.

Though personalized services sounds like they could be expensive, they do take your budget into account. You're in control of how much you spend on each type of clothing and you won't spend any more money than you want to.

While these services always require a styling fee (usually around $20-$30), they waive that fee if you buy any of the clothing items. They also offer referral bonuses and give you discounts if you buy all the pieces in your box.

Unlike clothing pieces I've bought on my own in the past, I've worn everything I own from Stitch Fix and Trunk Club countless times. I'm excited to wear them every week because they reflect my personal style well, they're comfortable, and they've held up through multiple washes because they're made from high-quality materials.

I think the services are particularly useful for stylish staple pieces such as jeans, a little black dress, or a leather jacket (if you want trend-driven pieces, we recommend Rent the Runway instead). Their versatility means you can wear them multiple ways and truly get your money's worth. I've spent more than I normally would on dresses and outerwear from Stitch Fix and Trunk Club, but they've also been worn much more often and lasted longer than clothes I've bought on my own.

Read more: I tried Dailylook, a personal-styling service that sends curated boxes of clothing to try on at home — the brands it carries are on the pricey side, but the selections were spot-on

3. It's flexible.

You don't have to receive clothing every month from these services. They let you pause shipments and choose delivery dates that work for you. If I don't want new clothing, I just hit pause, and when I am looking for something new or have a specific occasion to shop for, I resume my membership.

Ultimately, I'm really glad to be using personal styling services to buy my clothing.

They're more efficient and convenient than shopping on my own, and I end up with clothing I love.

White Americans make up a disproportionate number of US homeowners, and it's most extreme in New York City

  • A recent study by LendingTree looked at how much race affects homeownership rates in the 50 largest US metro areas.
  • It found that, in the 50 metro areas, white Americans make up an average of 59% of the population and own about 73% of the owner-occupied homes.
  • According to the study, the gap between white-American population and white-American homeownership is the widest in the New York metro area.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

A recent study by LendingTree, an online lending marketplace, tackled one of the most heavily talked about categories in American life — race.

The analysis, published Tuesday, looked at how much race affects homeownership rates in the 50 largest US metro areas.

It found that in these areas, white Americans make up an average of 59% of the population and own about 73% of the owner-occupied homes, availing themselves to the wealth that can come along with real estate.

The gap found in this study speaks to an issue of racial inequality that extends beyond just the home-buying industry. For example, white Americans, on average, have higher average incomes and are more likely to have college degrees than Americans who identify with nonwhite races. These factors, along with other social factors, contribute to the homeownership gap.

The gap is largest in New York and smallest in Pittsburgh.

The gap between the population of white Americans and the amount of homes owned by white Americans is the widest in the New York metro area. The researchers found that white Americans own around 67% of the area's owner-occupied homes but make up around just 47% of the area's population.

Other major metro areas that saw big gaps between the population of white Americans and the amount of homes they own include San Diego, where white Americans make up around 46% of the area's population but own around 65% of the area's owner-occupied homes, and Phoenix, where white American's make up around 56% of the area's population and own around 75% of the area's owner-occupied homes.

The smallest gaps included Pittsburgh, where white Americans are 86% of the population and own 93% of the area's owner-occupied homes, and Cincinnati, where white Americans make up around 80% of the population and own around 93% of the area's owner-occupied homes.

The best stand mixer overall

The KitchenAid Artisan Tilt-Head Stand Mixer with Pouring Shield is designed to take on just about any project from mixing honey to kneading bread dough.

If you are an experienced home baker, you will appreciate the KitchenAid Artisan mixer (KSM150). You can mix the dough for nine-dozen cookies or four loaves of bread in one batch with the 5-quart stainless steel bowl. You are certain to find an Artisan mixer in a color that matches your kitchen since there are more than 50 options available on Amazon, including Empire Red, Ice, Bordeaux, and Pistachio. (Note: Price varies by color.)

The Artisan comes with a one-piece pouring shield, six-wire whip, coated dough hook, and a coated flat beater. Also, with KitchenAid's 59-point planetary mixing action, there are 59 touch-points for every rotation the wire whip, beater, or dough hook makes around the bowl. This ensures fast and thorough mixing.

Most of the industry experts agree that the Artisan has impressive power. Foodal ranked the KSM150 as its top mixer and liked that it came with all of the attachments you need to get started. Thanks to its ability to knead bread dough, its solid motor, and the robust, stylish design, the Good Housekeeping Institute gave this model a 93 on a scale of 100. Lastly, the color selection, versatility, and motor led Top Ten Reviews to award the KSM150 best mixer honors. However, the site disliked that it didn't have advanced features, such as a timer or overload protection.

Nearly 90% of the reviews of the KitchenAid Artisan mixer on Amazon are for 4 or 5 stars. Buyers noted that this rugged mixer can handle heavy-duty mixing without waddling along your counter. Buyers did complain that there were too many colors to pick from, and it's hard to distinguish the tens shades of blue available on Amazon from just the pictures. Also, the polish used for the mixing bowls may need to be removed using Bar Keepers Friend, salt and lemon, or baking soda. Otherwise, you may end up with a gray residue on your dough.

Pros: Lots of colors to pick from, pouring shield, durable 325-watt motor

Cons: Lacks advanced features

The best stand mixer for beginners

Since it can handle basic mixing tasks and has an inexpensive price tag, the KitchenAid 4.5-Quart Classic Series Stand Mixer is a smart choice for novice bakers.

KitchenAid does not make cheap mixers. However, the KitchenAid K45SS Classic Series mixer is an affordable alternative. It comes with a wire whip, 4.5-quart bowl, a coated flat beater, a 250-watt motor, and a coated dough hook. There is also a multi-purpose attachment hub that takes fifteen optional attachments for making ice cream, grinding, rolling dough, and much more. You can also attach a food processor that will slice and dice fruits, vegetables, and cheeses. The accessories are sold separately and are compatible with any KitchenAid mixer.

The K45SS is one of the quietest mixers on the market due to its smaller motor. A knob on the side of the appliance lets you shift between the ten speeds. If you are mixing flour or other dry ingredients, they may go flying if you do not have a pouring shield. This model does not come with one and does not do slow start mixing.

Mix It Bake It was one of the many sites that rated the K45SS highly for its price and ability to handle moderate mixing tasks. However, it did lose points because it has trouble with large batches of bread dough and other tougher jobs. This concern was also brought up by Mixer Reviews, which cautioned against buying this model for regular bread making. The reviewers did like that this KitchenAid Classic Series mixer had a small footprint on the counter. And, the quality design and dependability of the motor were factors in Ratingle giving the K45SS a positive review.

The Classic Series mixer has more than 1,200 5-star reviews on Amazon. Buyers found the stylish design complemented an array of kitchen decors, and they liked the mixer's versatility. Verified buyers complained about the K45SS having the same gray residue problems as the KSM150. Also, you may want to purchase a bowl with a handle since the bowl that this unit comes with does not have one.

Pros: Tilt-up mixer head, 10 speed settings

Cons: Only has a 250-watt motor

The best stand mixer for moderate use

Compared to the heavy-hitting KitchenAid mixers, the Hamilton Beach Electrics All-Metal Stand Mixer holds its own for lighter tasks at an affordable price.

As the name suggests, the Hamilton Beach Electrics All-Metal Stand Mixer is made out of die-cast metal. It comes with a dough hook, two-piece pouring shield, wire whisk, flat beater, recipes, and a helpful user manual. The motor is 400 watts with twelve speed settings. This is a tilt-head mixer that measures 9 by 14 by 14 inches when the head is down. When you put the head up, it is about 18-inches high, which should still fit under the cabinets in most American homes.

Not only does the pouring shield keep ingredients from mucking up your kitchen, the shield, attachments, and bowl are all dishwasher safe for easy cleanup. One of the advanced features is high-performance electronics that keep the power constant at every speed.

Foodal gave the Hamilton Beach Electrics mixer a positive review, noting it is more affordable than the competing units of equal power and size and that it provided reliable time-saving performance. However, it proved to be too light for regular bread making. Mix It Bake It echoed Foodal's observations about the affordable pricing point and concerns about daily bread making. The site also added that Hamilton Beach backs up its Electrics mixers with a three-year replacement warranty, compared to the one-year warranty offered by KitchenAid.

Around 87% of the reviewers on Amazon gave the mixer a rating of 4 stars or higher. Despite what the experts say, the buyers on Amazon were adamant that the Electrics is good for bread dough. They recommend following the tips in the user manual, such as never kneading dough at a speed higher than 2. Buyers liked that this mixer could automatically adjust to the thickness of what you are mixing.

Pros: Three-year warranty, good value, 12 speed settings

Cons: May have trouble with tough jobs, like making bread

The best stand mixer for bread

The KitchenAid Professional 5 Plus Series Stand Mixer is the most powerful mixer on our list with a 450-watt motor, which makes it an excellent option for heavy-duty baking tasks.

The KitchenAid Professional 5 Plus comes with a stainless steel mixing bowl that fits 5 quarts of dough and features a handle. The ten-speed motor has overload protection and slow-start mixing. Installing the attachments is simple using the flip-up hinged hub cover. The bowl stays secure with the easy-lift lever. A wire whip, flat beater, and a spiral dough hook all come with the unit. And, it is available on Amazon in thirteen colors, such as Cobalt Blue, Metallic Chrome, Onyx Black, and Empire Red (price varies by color, and some colors are available only through third-party sellers on Amazon).

I own and regularly use the original Professional 5. It has served me well for the last 15 years, and you will find even older variants in use. The 5 Plus is a step up from my model with advanced features and a stronger motor (450 watts vs. 350 watts). Even with the smaller motor, the Professional 5 has held up as I use it to make two loaves of bread per week. Mixing pie ingredients, cookie dough, and other easier jobs are a piece of cake (pun intended). The Professional 5 Plus is an improvement on an already terrific and durable product.

Ratingle put this model near the top of its list of stand mixers. Though the reviewers found the appliance to be rather loud, they liked the flexibility the 450-watt motor and ten speed controls afforded.

Nearly a thousand reviewers on Amazon gave the Professional 5 Plus mixer 4 or 5 stars. Buyers remarked that it can fit under most cabinets since it is 16.5 inches in height and it takes up little space on your counter. Buyers also found it had the power to take on just about any baking project.

Pros: 67-point mixing, most powerful mixer on our list, several advanced features

Cons: Loud and heavy

The best budget stand mixer

If you are a casual baker who has always wanted a stand mixer but don't have hundreds of dollars to spend, the Sunbeam 250-Watt 5-Speed Stand Mixer is for you.

The Sunbeam stand mixer is a small wonder. It is a two-in-one hand mixer and stand mixer. You simply detach the head from the base for lighter tasks, such as mashing potatoes. This model features a 250-watt motor with five speed settings.

It comes with a three-quart stainless steel bowl and chrome dough hooks and beaters. At 12 by 8 by 13 inches, it is easy to store and does not take up much space on your counter. The unit is made of plastic and may not be right for bread dough and other tougher tasks. For the price, you should also have realistic expectations when it comes to long-term durability.

Mix It Bake It recommends the Sunbeam mixer for people who are willing to do manual mixing, don't have much storage or counter space, are on a budget, are patient with controls and buttons, and who do not want one of the heavier stand mixers (this unit only weighs 7 pounds). They suggest busy bakers who like to work with tough bread doughs buy a heavier duty machine.

On Amazon, 75% of the reviewers gave the Sunbeam 4 or 5 stars. The buyers seem almost guilty for having chosen this affordable mixer over the KitchenAid behemoths. Yet, they note that this unit works great for casual baking and for tasks that require long-duration mixing, like whipped cream and meringues. One user complained that their mixer broke down after making their second batch of bread dough, but they used the medium setting for this task. Most manufacturers suggest you use the low setting for kneading dough.

Pros: Light, inexpensive, two mixers in one

Cons: Emits an odor, few accessories

How to change your YouTube email address through your Google account

youtube google

It's not always possible to change the email address associated with a YouTube account.

If the email address associated with your YouTube account is an @gmail.com email, you probably can't change it and will need to create a new Google account with a non-Gmail email that will then be linked to a new YouTube account.

For others users, however, the process of changing the email address linked to a YouTube account is pretty straightforward.

Here's how to do it.

How to change your YouTube email address

1. Sign into your Google account and then click on your image (or avatar) at the top right corner.

2. Click "Manage your Google Account" on the dropdown menu.

2_change_email

3. On the next page, click "Personal info" from the column on the left side of the screen.

3__change_email

4. Click on Email in the "Contact info" section.

5. Select "Google Account email," and click on Edit next to your email address. According to Google, you may not be able to open "Google Account email" if you're using a Gmail address, and you won't be able to change it.

6. If you can edit your email, enter the new email address you wish to use, then save to confirm it.

Now go to the newly added email address's inbox and watch for a verification request. Verify the change, and you should be good to go.

'What are tags on YouTube?': How to use YouTube tags to help people find your videos

$

youtube business personal recording account

  • YouTube tags are keywords that you can select for your own videos, and if they are properly associated with your video, it will help others find your content.
  • When people search for videos with keywords, tags are used by YouTube's algorithm as it considers what content to serve.
  • The more carefully selected your tags are, the more likely people are to find and watch your videos.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

When it comes to connecting a suitable audience to a video on YouTube, the most important text written about the video is usually the title and description.

These are the words potential viewers will see as they weigh whether or not to watch the clip. Nearly as important, however, are the unseen keywords known as tags.

Here's what you need to know about tags on YouTube

What tags are on YouTube, and how to use them to get your videos discovered

Tags are words that describe or relate to a given video, and that would likely be used in a search conducted by a person, or found to be associated with the video by an algorithm.

When you add the right tags to your video, you increase the chance that other YouTubers will find and watch it.

You should include related tags that are more general, along with a few specific tags that pertain directly to your video.

2_ _tags

So, for a video about a toddler feeding tuna to a cat, you would want to consider the tags "cats," "toddler," and "pets," as well as something more specific, like "tuna fish" or "treat."

How to add tags to your own YouTube video

1. Log into your YouTube account and then click the camera icon on the top right corner of the screen.

2. Select "Upload video" from the dropdown menu.

0_ _tags

3. Choose the video you wish to upload, then begin the upload process.

4. Name the video and give it a description.

5. Add between five and 15 relevant tags to meet YouTube best practices, separating tags with commas. Adding more than 15 will cause YouTube to ignore all tags on the video.

6. Click "SAVE" to complete the upload.

How to go 'back in time' in Google Earth using its historical imagery feature, and see locations many years in the past

lady working on computer desktop

In itself, Google Earth can be an interesting tool. It allows users to check out far-off and unfamiliar places, to see what they look like in 2D or 3D, and even investigate local points of interest.

By default, you'll see things as they appear now. But, thanks to the program's historical imagery tool, you can also see what the map would have looked like at different points in time — though this option may not be available for every location.

Here's how to use that tool and get a more historical view of the places you want to see on Google Earth.

How to go back in time on Google Earth

Before you get started, keep in mind that in order to check out a map over time, you'll have to be using the downloadable application version of Google Earth, rather than the mobile app.

1. Go to https://www.google.com/earth/versions/#download-pro to download Google Earth Pro. Install it onto your computer, and then open it.

2. Click the search bar at the top of the left sidebar and search for the location you want to view. This can be a city and state or country, GPS coordinates, a street name, specific address, ZIP or postal code, or a general place.

3. Click "Search."

4. Click "View" in the menu bar at the top of your screen, and then "Historical Imagery."

Screen Shot 2019 09 30 at 2.37.57 PM

5. A bar will open up at the top of your 3D viewer that will let you scroll back in time. The map will change as you scroll through time.
