How the ultra-wealthy attend Burning Man, from $55,000 private jet flights to personal chefs — and why other burners aren't happy about it

  • Burning Man, the nine-day art-focused event in the middle of the Nevada desert, is favorite of celebrities and tech CEOs alike.
  • Roundtrip private flights from New York to the temporary airport that services the event ground cost $55,000, private jet booking company Jettly CEO Justin Crabbe told Business Insider.
  • Some ultra-wealthy burners also opt to stay in luxurious camps that employ private chefs and can charge as much as $50,000 for nine days, according to The New York Post.
  • Ultra-wealthy burners have received pushback from other attendees and the event's organizers alike.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

With enough money, nine days in a remote part of the desert can be a glamorous undertaking.

Most people who attend Burning Man make the 140-mile drive to the event's location in the Black Rock Desert, pitch tents, and survive off of non-perishable food. Not so for many of the celebrities and Silicon Valley CEOs who attend the event.

The event prohibits attendees, called burners, from buying and selling anything other than ice and coffee, which means that ultra-wealthy burners have to go to extraordinary lengths to maintain the level of luxury that they're accustomed to.

Private jets are the preferred method of transportation to Black Rock City for the 1%.

A private flight on a Super Mid jet that seats eight to 10 people from New York to Black Rock City costs about $55,000 roundtrip for the entire group, private jet booking company Jettly CEO Justin Crabbe told Business Insider.

The company has scheduled at least 20 flights to the event this year.

For Jettly's ultra-wealthy clients, "the party starts long before they get to Black Rock City," Crabbe said.

The only thing that isn't included in chartering a jet through Jettly is catering, Crabbe said — but the company will accommodate guests' request for an extra fee.

One group requested that their flight be catered by upscale New York City Japanese restaurant Nobu, while another ordered 15 bottles of champagne for the flight, Crabbe said.

When one-percenters step off their flights, they "aren't going to see much," Crabbe said.

Burning Man's organizers set up a temporary airport for ultra-wealthy burners' jets, according to Crabbe. The airport has two runways and no permanent structures, not even an air traffic control tower. Only specially trained pilots with permits allowing them to fly into the Black Rock desert can land there.

The airport also lacks any formal ground transportation like shuttles or car service, Crabbe said, forcing burners to travel the 20 miles from the airport to Black Rock City in pre-booked cars, golf carts, or on foot.

"It's no LAX or Teterboro," Crabbe said.

When they do arrive in Black Rock City, luxury camps are waiting.

Billionaire burners don't erect their own tents like other attendees, they simply check in at so-called "fancy camps." Some "fancy camps" have communal areas with furniture, chandeliers,  and working ceramic foundations,Insider's Aly Weisman previously reported.

Other "fancy camps" are made of groups of luxury RVs. Spending the nine-day festival in a camp like this can cost as much as $50,000, according to The New York Post.

However, wealthy burners still have to use outhouses.

Portuguese model Sara Sampaio posted a photo of herself in front of a cart in 2016, writing "I needed the burn so badly this year! What a place! Even sick loved every minute of it!"

However, some celebrities, like Heidi Klum and actress Kelly Rohrbach, prefer to get around on bikes like the non-1% burners. Katy Perry, for one, posted a video on Instagram of herself riding a Segway at the event in 2015.

Some "fancy camps" hire private chefs for the week.

Los Angeles-based private chef Keven Lee charged the 180-person camp that hired him in 2018 $250,000 to prepare four meals a day, according to The New York Post. Alcohol costs extra.

Lee brought six assistants and six vehicles full of equipment, including two refrigerated trucks, to Black Rock City to help him prepare restaurant-quality meals with fresh meats and produce in the middle of the desert, the Post reported.

Arguably the biggest perk of the "fancy camps" is their privacy.

The "fancy camps" are often separated from the rest of Black Rock City by a wall of RVs or a line of black tarps, according to Vox. Most camps welcome outsiders in and offer them food and drinks, in keeping with Burning Man's ethos, but the "fancy camps" are more exclusive.

However, the event's organizers say luxury takes away from the Burning Man experience.

Radical inclusion, decommodification, and radical self-reliance are three of Burning Man's 10 principles, and some attendees of the "fancy camps" violate all three, according to The New York Times.

The event banned one luxurious camp, Humano the Tribe, from participating in 2019 because it had previously broken a rule against damaging the environment, according to The Times.

"Our job is to shine a light on an issue and do our part," Marian Goodell, the CEO of the Burning Man project, told The New York Times. "Because you are building a community, you need to act like a community. You don't have transactions and businesses. You don't have velvet ropes."

As Burning Man cofounder Will Rogers told Vox in 2014, "After the first dust storm, we're all the same color."

Here's how Joe Biden went from being a kid from Scranton to a US Senator, VP, and now the 2020 Democratic presidential frontrunner

Joe Biden

  • Former Vice President Joe Biden is quickly carving his own lane in the crowded field of Democratic presidential candidates.
  • Biden has maintained strong standing in most national and early voting state polls.
  • Of the nearly two dozen Democrats running for president, Biden has the longest career in Washington.
  • Visit BusinessInsider.com for more stories.

Former Vice President Joe Biden jumped in the race for president in April. Though he initially had a commanding lead in the polls, his lead has eroded as rivals such as Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren surged forward.

But he likely won't see it as a significant hurdle — throughout his eventful life and political career, Biden has overcome enormous obstacles to get to where he is today.

Read more: Joe Biden is running for president in 2020. Here's everything we know about the candidate and how he stacks up against the competition.

Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania on November 20, 1942 to a used car salesman, Biden moved with his family to Mayfield, Delaware, when he was 13 years old. From the get-go, he faced many trials growing up, including bullies and an embarrassing stutter.

As he says his father taught him, "The measure of a man is not how often he is knocked down, but how quickly he gets up."

Throughout his long political trajectory, Biden has lived by his father's advice, and gotten back up after facing countless tragedies and challenges to achieve his political dreams.

Here's how a kid from Scranton became a respected senator, vice president, and now a 2020 presidential contender.

After encouragement from the Democratic Party, Biden ran for US Senate in 1972 and won, unseating Republican J. Caleb Boggs to become the fifth-youngest senator in history. He would continue serving as Delaware's senator for over 30 years.

Biden got his hands dirty as a young Senator — working on consumer protection, international arms control, and crime in the 1970s. He met his current wife, Jill, on a blind date his brother arranged in 1975. The two married in 1977, and their daughter, Ashley Blazer, was born in 1981.

Biden won reelection yet again in 1982, and in 1984, became one of the main managers in the Senate for the passage of the Comprehensive Crime Control Act, a sweeping crime bill that, although controversial, represented one of his most important legislative accomplishments up to that point.

Many, including Biden himself, believed he would have fared better than Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton did, and beaten Trump had he run.

In one of his last acts as president, Obama awarded Biden the Presidential Medal of Freedom in January 2017. During his speech, Obama celebrated not just Biden's achievements, but also his own personal "bromance" with his vice president.

NYC landlords were caught renting out 'micro rooms' for $600 a month. Here are 7 places in the US where you can legally rent an apartment for that much — or less.

In August, two Manhattan landlords were caught renting out illegal sub-units with no windows, sprinklers, or fire-safety systems. In one of the illegal apartments, the ceilings were reported to be just 4.5 to 6 feet tall.

Gothamist reports that the tiny spaces were being rented out for $600 a month.

Given that New York City is home to one of America's most expensive rental markets, it's no surprise that even illegal micro-apartments will cost renters a pretty penny. In fact, one year's worth of the average legal rent in Manhattan ($2,980 for a one-bedroom, as of June 2019) is more than three-quarters of the country's average annual salary, which is $47,060.

But not every American city is this outrageously expensive.

With the help of Zillow, Business Insider compiled a list of cities where you can legally rent a real apartment — windows included! — for less than $600 a month. Of the 36 cities Zillow provided, Business Insider has listed the seven largest in terms of population. Population data for each city was collected from Niche, a ranking and review site.

  • The world's largest underwater restaurant in Norway was just included on Time Magazine's "World's Greatest Places 2019" list.
  • Fittingly called "Under," the restaurant — the first of its kind in Europe — has three-foot-thick walls and is designed to withstand harsh weather and rough seas.

The world's largest underwater restaurant in Norway just earned a spot on Time Magazine's World's Greatest Places 2019 list.

"Under," which opened in March, is Europe's first underwater eatery. Designed by Snøhetta, the restaurant sits half-submerged into the sea and has three-foot thick walls designed to withstand the area's rugged seas.

Guests at Under can gaze at marine life through a 36- x 13-foot panoramic window in the dining room, which seats between 35 and 40 guests each night. Muted lighting was installed on the seabed so that guests can see the marine life in any weather conditions.

The cuisine is, of course, seafood. Danish chef Nicolai Ellitsgaard Pedersen will create locally sourced dishes that include cod, lobster, mussels, and truffle kelp, which is a local type of seaweed that apparently tastes like truffles.

Here's a look inside Under, the world's largest underwater restaurant.

The world's largest — and Europe's first — underwater restaurant is open in Norway, aptly called "Under." It was named one of Time Magazine's Greatest Places of 2019.

According to Arne Marthinsen, the project manager for SubMar Group, which is responsible for the project's marine operations, Under is unique among other underwater structures.

"What makes it so complicated and unique, is the fact that it isn't going to be a simple, concrete storage tank, but rather an amazing, unique experience for people due to the location, the architecture, the interior, the underwater view and of course the delicious cuisine," Marthinsen said in a news release.

Under was built aboveground on a barge over a period of about six months. The structure was designed to be able to weather harsh conditions.

"The first problem is water pressure, as we're [16 feet] below the surface, but the biggest challenge is the waves," Rune Grasdal, a senior architect at Snøhetta, told CNN.

"Wind and waves are extreme here," Grasdal said. "To withstand all these forces, the building is slightly curved, so it can better take to the waves, and it's thick: [1.6 feet] for the concrete and about [1 foot] for the acrylic windows."

After construction was completed on the barge, the structure was towed into position about 600 feet away, lowered into the sea, and attached to a foundation on the ocean floor in July 2018.

The restaurant was purposefully placed in an area known to have harsh weather. Under's three-foot-thick walls were designed to withstand pressure and shock from the rugged sea conditions.

"The most exciting experience will be visiting the restaurant during rough weather," Grasdal told Forbes. "It will be fantastic to see the sea surface broken up by the big waves and the rain, making for a very dramatic view."

Under will also function as a marine research center, studying marine biology and fish behavior through cameras and other tools installed on the restaurant's facade.

I’ve been using this $17 Opinel knife for 11 years and it’s still just as good as when I first bought it

opinel knife

  • Opinel has been making classic pocket knives since 1890.
  • They make for a great personal investment or gift. Prices start at $17, so they're not expensive but they don't skimp on quality either — I've had mine for years and it works just as well as when I first bought it in Paris.
  • There are various designs like different handles and special engraving, and even limited-edition styles — the hardest part is choosing just one to buy.

I was eight years old when my family first went camping in France. Aside from the discovery of Nutella, the only thing I remember from that trip is that I really wanted one of the penknives that the older French kids had.

But I was young, and my parents decided that it wasn't a good idea. Valid.

I went back years later when I was 21 and realized that French adults had those knives as well. By that time though, they were well worn — still sharp, but beautifully weathered and bonded with their owners.

As soon as I got out of the hotel, I went and got myself an Opinel knife.

I still have it many years later. It lives in my car, and about once a week, it'll come out to strike a flint to start a fire, open an Amazon package, and more. There are a million things you can do with an Opinel pocket knife. It'll last you a long time, and it's very affordable too.

Opinel's knives haven't changed much in design since Joseph Opinel began making them in 1890 in Savoie, France. They have, however, come a long way from the farms and fields of the French Alps.

Opinel knives come in many sizes, but the No. 8 with its 3 1/4-inch blade and beech handle is the perfect size for just about everything you could want from a pocket knife. The blade is small enough to be legal in most states (though you should definitely check first), large enough to handle a sizable hunk of cheese or carving project, and so maneuverable in the hand that Picasso himself used one for his sculpture work.

The simple Virobloc safety ring, invented in 1955, locks the blade when it's in use and keeps it from opening when it's in your pocket, all with an easy twist. Many other knives use more complicated mechanisms, but this one has never failed me and the simple design with just one moving part is easy to maintain.

At just $17, Opinel's No. 8 knife is a great gift for just about anyone too.

Outdoorsy types can appreciate the reliable and trustworthy performance, culinary enthusiasts can enjoy the sharp precision, and it's impossible for anyone with an eye for design not to appreciate the simplicity and elegance of a product which has been in daily use for more than a century.

Opinel 1

Unlike using the knife though, picking the right one to buy is difficult.

Opinel offers different types of wooden handles from walnut to olive wood, as well as engravings of different designs from artists. There are also specialty blades, including the always-handy pocket oyster shucker, a knife for cutting mushrooms, and even a knife with an embedded corkscrew which serves as a one-stop-shop for those of us who might stage more impromptu wine and cheese picnics if only they were suitably equipped. I'll be taking that one as I cycle around Spain this summer.

The brand also recently launched a limited-edition version of the No. 8 knife in Black Oak. The oak handle comes from sustainably managed French forests and has a very attractive "natural" look when combined with the anti-corrosive black stainless-steel blade that carries Opinel's signature "crowned" hallmark. Cruise ship workers reveal what it's really like to live at sea

Cruise ship jobs have a number of distinctive features that separate them from land-based jobs. Perhaps the biggest difference is the fact that cruise ship employees live where they work.

That can have advantages, like short "commutes" and close bonds with co-workers, but it also presents potential downsides, like poor food quality and a sometimes excessive party culture.

Business Insider spoke with 39 current and former cruise line employees who described what it's like to live and work on a cruise ship. (Some of those mentioned in this story requested anonymity for fear of reprisal from their current or former employer.)

Here's what they said.

Have you worked on a cruise ship? Do you have a story to share? Email this reporter at mmatousek@businessinsider.com

There's a big party culture, but it isn't always as fun as it seems.

Cruise ships have a reputation for fostering a party culture among employees fueled by long hours and cheap drinks available at crew-only bars.

But social drinking can turn into self-medication, according to Brian David Bruns, who worked as a waiter for Carnival Cruise Lines for 13 months between 2003 and 2004 and wrote a book, "Cruise Confidential," about the experience.

Bruns told Business Insider that the stress and loneliness of working on a cruise ship made alcohol an attractive coping mechanism. During his time as a waiter, an outside observer would likely have determined that he developed a drinking problem, Bruns said.

"I'm sure any third party would observe me and say I had a problem," he said. "It can happen very quickly where you go from a social drink to self-medicating because of loneliness."

The food is bad.

Cruise ship workers with lower-paying jobs, like bartenders and waiters, are often at the mercy of the crew cafeteria. There, according to five current or former cruise ship employees, the food leaves much to be desired.

Some described their distaste for the food as a logistical issue. Since many ships employ crew members from around the world, the food served in the crew cafeteria can reflect that variety, making it difficult for some to find food similar to what they would eat at home on a consistent basis. Others described food of poor quality, like chicken with a rubber-like texture or sauteed fish heads.

"The food sucks," a former employee for Norwegian Cruise Line and Holland America Line said.

Workers would keep tuna, granola bars, and other snack foods in their rooms or favor simple foods that require little preparation, like fruit, cereal, and sandwiches, she said.

Not all of the cruise ship employees Business Insider spoke to disliked the food in the crew cafeteria. Two former cruise ship employees said they enjoyed both the quality and variety of the food served to crew members.

You work long hours.

Rather than working traditional five-day weeks, cruise-ship employees often work seven days a week for the duration of their contracts, which can range from about two months to 11 months. Between four and eight months was the most common contract length cited by 31 current and former cruise-ship employees who spoke with Business Insider.

The hours can also be intense, from about eight to nearly 20 hours a day. The employees Business Insider spoke with reported an average of about 12 hours.

A former waiter for Carnival Cruise Line who said he worked about 12 hours a day described his schedule as "crazy" and said it led to fatigue and stress.

"We don't get enough sleep," he said.

Employees have a lot of sex with each other.

Among the many distinctive features of a cruise ship job is the fact that you live with your co-workers. That can result in unusually close bonds among employees and an unusual amount of sex between them.

"There's a lot of sex on cruise ships," said a former casino manager for Holland America Line.

Some compared the hookup culture as being similar to, or even exceeding, that of a college dorm.

But the permissive sexual culture on cruise ships can also lead to aggressive or inappropriate behavior. A former Royal Caribbean Cruises employee said one of her managers would make comments about her sexual orientation and criticize her for never changing her hairstyle.

Royal Caribbean did not respond to a request for comment.

Romantic relationships start and end quickly

Romantic relationships among employees develop and end much faster than on land, which, along with frequent turnover, can make long-term relationships difficult.

"One month on a ship is maybe like two years on land, because you spend so much time with these people," said Taylor Sokol, a former cruise director for Holland America.

But the close proximity between employees can make it difficult to maintain a healthy amount of space from a romantic partner, Sokol said.

"It's kind of hard to give someone their space when you live maybe 10 feet away from them."

Almost all of the passengers are pleasant, but some are annoying

Current and former employees had largely positive things to say about passengers, characterizing the vast majority of them as pleasant and respectful.

But some employees described frustrating tendencies they've noticed in passengers, like being too rowdy, asking annoying questions, and talking too much.

iPhone XS Max

  • It's easy to enable JavaScript on your iPhone, although it should already be enabled.
  • JavaScript is built into the iPhone's Safari browser, but if you're having trouble displaying websites, it might be turned off on your phone.
  • To enable JavaScript on your iPhone (or verify that it's turned on), go to the Advanced page in Safari's Settings.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

JavaScript is a popular programming language used by most websites.

It's so commonly used because it allows web pages to be dynamic and interactive, able to respond to input from elements like buttons and text input. JavaScript doesn't require any plug-ins – the browser itself knows how to interpret JavaScript code.

JavaScript is often confused with Java. The two are very different (in fact, completely different) programming languages that were developed separately and have nothing in common except part of their name.

If you aren't using JavaScript on your iPhone, it's likely that many web pages do not display properly in your phone's Safari browser. It should be turned on by default, though it's possible that at some point it was disabled, rendering many websites broken on your phone.

The good news is that you can enable JavaScript in just a few taps. It's found in the Settings app, in the Advanced tab of the Safari page.

2 members of Hong Kong's richest family have lost $1 billion each since the protests started. Here's why the protests are costing the Kwoks more than the city's other billionaires.

Hong Kong's billionaires have made it no secret that they are ready for the protests that have engulfed the semiautonomous city for 12 weeks to end. However, none may be more frustrated by the unrest than the Kwok family.

The family owns Sun Hung Kai Properties, Hong Kong's largest real-estate developer. Sun Hung Hai shares have plunged 11% since mid-June, according to Bloomberg. That is two times as much as Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index.

Thousands took to the streets of Hong Kong beginning in July over an extradition bill with mainland China but have since expanded their focus to police actions and their democratic system, Business Insider previously reported.

Hong Kong's richest family is losing more money than other billionaires.

The Kwoks are Asia's second-richest family and the richest family in Hong Kong, with a collective net worth of $38 billion, according to Bloomberg.

Raymond Kwok, Sun Hung Kai's chairman, was worth $13.1 billion on July 21, according to Bloomberg's Billionaire Index. Now his net worth has dropped to $11.4 billion. Thomas Kwok, another family member, who was recently released from a three-year prison sentence for bribery, has seen his net worth drop over $1.5 billion since July 21, according to Bloomberg's Billionaire Index

Read more: The richest man in Hong Kong has lost $3 billion since July, and now he's joining the chorus of wealthy citizens calling for the 10-week protests to end

The family is unusually exposed to two of the sectors hit hardest by the protests — retail and tourism. The conglomerates owned by other wealthy Hong Kong real-estate moguls, like Li Ka-shing, get their wealth from conglomerates that have interests in other countries and industries. Li, for example, also owns ports, a Canadian oil company, and telephone companies, among other businesses, spread across the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, and Panama, according to Bloomberg's Billionaire Index. Sun Hung Kai, however, focuses on building skyscrapers and shopping centers in Hong Kong, Bloomberg reported.

Some of Sun Hung Kai's properties have also become sites of the protests, according to Bloomberg. When protests turned violent at New Town Plaza, an upscale shopping mall owned by Sun Hung Kai, a photo of a woman carrying a Saint Laurent bag stepping over a pool of blood as she fled was widely circulated online.

A chorus of local billionaires, including Hong Kong's richest man, is calling for peace.

In a statement issued on August 13, Sun Hung Kai Properties called for an end to the unrest.

"The recent series of violent acts to challenge the rule of law have damaged Hong Kong's economy and seriously affect citizens' daily life," the statement said, according to a translation by Bloomberg.

And the Kwoks are not the only Hong Kong billionaires who are calling for an end to the protests.

Li, Hong Kong's richest man, took out advertisements in local Hong Kong newspapers calling for an end to the protests on August 15, the South China Morning Post reported. The ads featured the Chinese word for "violence" covered in a general prohibition sign (red circle with a slash through it), with "stop anger and violence in the name of love" written below. Li alone has lost $3 billion since July, according to the Financial Times

The billionaire real-estate developer Peter Woo wrote, "It's time to think deeply," in the Hong Kong Economic Journal on August 12, according to Bloomberg. "Going against the extradition bill was the 'big tree' of this movement. This one and only big appeal has already been accepted by the government, so this tree has fallen," he added. Over $1 billion has been wiped off of Woo's personal net worth since the protests began, according to Bloomberg.

Thai billionaire Dhanin Chearavanont, the chairman of the conglomerate Charoen Pokphand Group Co., also weighed in on the protests through newspaper advertisements calling for the "restoration of order, rule of law and mutual prosperity" on August 26, Bloomberg reported. Chearavanont is a major investor in two firms that are listed on Hong Kong's stock exchange — the insurer Ping An Insurance Group and the holding company CP Pokphand.

The net worths of Hong Kong's billionaires are unusually sensitive to market volatility, Business Insider previously reported. In 2018, Hong Kong's high-net-worth population experienced the steepest drop in collective wealth of any region worldwide, according to the French technology-consulting firm Capgemini. The net worths of Hong Kong's wealthiest residents fell 13% in 2018, compared with the global average of 3%, according to Capgemini.

Here's what happens when two hurricanes collide

$
0
0
  • When two hurricanes collide, the phenomenon is called the Fujiwhara effect.
  • If two cyclones pass within 900 miles of each other, they can start to orbit.
  • If the two storms get to within 190 miles of each other, they'll collide or merge. This can turn two smaller storms into one giant one.
  • In rare instances, close proximity can throw a storm off course, as was the case with hurricanes Hilary and Irwin in July 2017.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Following is a transcript of the video.

What happens when two hurricanes collide?

The phenomenon is called the Fujiwhara effect.

Named for Japanese meteorologist Sakuhei Fujiwhara, who originally described it in 1921.

If two cyclones pass within 900 miles of each other, they can start to orbit.

What happens next depends on the size of each storm.

If one storm is much stronger than the other, the smaller storm usually rotates around the larger one.

But when bot storms are similar in strength, they tend to orbit a common center between the two.

If the two storms get to within 190 miles of each other, they'll collide or merge.

The result is transformative.

It can turn two smaller storms into one giant one.

The interaction can also throw a cyclone off course.

That's what happened in July 2017 with hurricanes Hilary and Irwin.

Hurricane Hilary changed Irwin's course from west to north.

This example is more the exception than the norm.

Hurricane collisions and interactions are rare.

Yet, growing evidence suggests a warming climate could affect hurricane season.

What the effects will be is unclear, but who knows?

Perhaps more hurricane mergers are in our future.

Rob Gronkowski said he hasn't ruled out an NFL comeback — here's how he saved his entire $54 million career earnings from the NFL

Rob Gronkowski

  • Rob Gronkowski left open the possibility of returning to the NFL during a recent press conference promoting CBDMedic, a CBD-based ointment that he says has helped him recover.
  • Gronkowski retired from the NFL in March with his entire career earnings: $54 million, according to Spotrac.
  • He was able to save this nest egg by following a simple money rule: Keep it simple by saving surplus money.
  • Gronkowski previously told Business Insider he lived off only his endorsement earnings.
  • Gronkowski is in good company — some of the world's wealthiest people, like Warren Buffett and Mark Zuckerberg, are known for having frugal spending habits.

Rob Gronkowski left open the possibility of returning to the NFL while promoting a new partnership CBDMedic, a CBD-based ointment.

In a press conference, the former New England Patriots tight end said football wore him down and the ointment has helped him recover, reported Business Insider's Scott Davis. He said if his mind, body, and spirit feel ready to play down the line, he'll return, but he doesn't envision it happening any time soon.

He also said he hopes to pitch CBD to quarterback and former teammate Tom Brady, who he described as the "healthiest guy in the NFL."

Gronkowski announced in March that he would retire from the NFL.

The New England Patriots tight end had a nice nest egg to fall back on: his entire NFL career earnings, which total $54 million after nine seasons, according to Spotrac.

Business Insider's Scott Davis previously reported that Gronkowski, 29, hadn't spent any of the money he made during his NFL career, only his endorsement earnings. He advised other players to follow a similar plan and watch their spending overall.

"I'd just say keep it simple," Gronkowski told Business Insider last year. "Keep it easy, and I'd say keep it simple. Get what you need to be comfortable, save the extra."

He continued: "It's a short career here in the league. The average is about three to four years, and when it's done, it's done. Be simple, manage it safe, so when it's done you've got a little base, a little foundation to live off."

Gronkowski's savings strategy isn't far from the financial habits of other successful millionaires and billionaires, many of whom also live relatively frugal lifestyles.

Some of the world's wealthiest people live very affordable lifestyles

Frugal lifestyles help millionaires get rich in the first place, according to Sarah Stanley Fallaw, the director of research for the Affluent Market Institute and an author of "The Next Millionaire Next Door: Enduring Strategies for Building Wealth," in which she surveyed more than 600 millionaires in America.

During her research, she studied the characteristics most predictive of net worth and found that six behaviors, which she called "wealth factors," were related to net-worth potential, regardless of age or income. One of those is frugality: a commitment to saving, spending less, and sticking to a budget.

"Spending above your means, spending instead of saving for retirement, spending in anticipation of becoming wealthy makes you a slave to the paycheck, even with a stellar level of income," she wrote.

Consider Warren Buffett, who still lives in the modest home in Omaha, Nebraska, that he bought for $276,700 (in today's dollars). Richard Branson is famously frugal when it comes to buying luxury items, and several other billionaires, like Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos, have been spotted driving affordable cars — Hondas, to be exact.

Tyra Banks, who has an estimated net worth of $90 million, saved so much money that she was able to buy a house at 20 years old. Her accountants even told her she needed to spend money and had her set up a frivolous account.

Jay Leno, who has an estimated net worth of $250 million, had a strategy similar to Gronkowski's. He's said he always tried to hold two jobs, spending money from one while saving from the other. He saved all his money from hosting the "Tonight Show" — as much as $30 million a year — and spent only what he made from stand-up comedy.

When it comes to reining in your paycheck, it looks like Leno and Gronkowski are on to something.

CREDIT CARD SYDNEY AUSTRALIA Chase Sapphire Preferred 21

  • If you have the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card, Chase Freedom Unlimited, or another Chase credit card, you could be eligible for Chase Offers.
  • Chase Offers earn you cash back — usually in the form of a percentage of your purchase — at participating retailers when you make an eligible purchase.
  • Recent examples of Chase Offers include 10% back at Casper, 5% back at Airbnb, and 10% back at Starbucks.
  • You can find your Chase Offers by logging in to your Chase account.

Chase offers some of the most popular rewards credit cards. Cards like the Sapphire Preferred, the Chase Sapphire Reserve, and the Chase Freedom give you numerous ways to earn valuable points, miles, and cash back.

If you have a Chase credit card, you should be aware of the Chase Offers program. It can be a powerful tool for earning additional cash back on your purchases with retailers and restaurants like Casper and Olive Garden.

Read more:The best Chase credit cards available now

What is the Chase Offers program?

Chase Offers is a cash-back program for certain Chase credit and debit cards that offers you discounts at featured merchants. It's similar to the Amex Offers program in that it offers discounts at various retailers, but unlike the Amex Offers program, you can only earn cash back through Chase Offers, not bonus points on purchases.

Also unlike the Amex Offers program, Chase offers isn't available to all Chase cardholders — if you have multiple Chase cards, you may find that one of your cards has several offers attached to it, while another has none.

Once you find a Chase Offer that you can utilize, you just click on it to add it to your card. Once it's added, there's nothing else that you need to do — just make the purchase at the retailer as you normally would.

When you make an eligible purchase, you'll automatically receive a statement credit on your account; there are no coupons or codes that you need to worry about. The purchase must be made before the offer expires, but it still counts even if the transaction posts after the offer ends. The rewards you earn from the Chase Offers program will be in addition to any rewards your credit card would normally qualify for.

For example, my Chase Freedom card is currently offering me 5% back on Airbnb purchases for the next 33 days. My Chase Sapphire Reserve has the same offer, as well as one for 15% back at Westin hotels for the next 28 days and 10% back at Best Western for the next 16 days.

Other offers that I've seen on my Chase cards include:

  • 10% back at Starbucks
  • 10% back at the Olive Garden
  • 10% back at Jimmy John's and Friday's restaurants
  • 10% back at Casper

The cash back you earn through Chase Offers is in addition to the rewards or cash back you get through spending on your Chase card. So if you have a Chase Offer for cash back at a restaurant on your Chase Sapphire Preferred card, you'd get 2 points per dollar on your purchase in addition to cash back through the offer.

Just note that the offers that you select for your Chase card are only eligible for that particular card. So if you find a great offer for your Chase Freedom card, then you have to make a purchase with that particular card in order to qualify, not your Sapphire Preferred or another Chase card.

Here's how to find your Chase Offers

You can find your Chase Offers in one of three ways:

  • Online at Chase.com
  • On Chase's mobile app
  • With the Chase Pay app

Just note that the Chase Pay app will be discontinued in early 2020.

If you're logged in to Chase.com:

  1. Log in to your Chase account at Chase.com
  2. Go to the scroll bar on the left side.
  3. Go to the bottom and find Chase Offers underneath your accounts list. Note that you might not see this option if you have business credit cards and you have "Chase for Business" on a banner at the top of the page.

If you use the Chase.com mobile app:

  1. Log in to the mobile app.
  2. Select your "Personal Accounts"
  3. Scroll down to see your individual credit cards and choose one.
  4. Scroll down past your payment information, recent transactions, rewards balance, and account services to find the section on Chase Offers.

You'll see a few offers there, but you'll likely have to click on "See all offers" below to find the rest of them. Clicking on an offer will automatically add it to your card while showing you all of its details, terms, and conditions.

In the Chase Pay app:

  1. To find Chase Offers through the Chase Pay app, start by logging in to the app.
  2. You'll be able to find Chase Offers in your activity snapshot on the main page of the app. Or you can find your available offers in The Spotlight section.
  3. Click on the arrow to the right of Available offers to see a list of Chase Offers.

Bottom line

Chase Offers are a fantastic way to earn additional cash back in addition to the rewards that you ordinarily earn from your Chase cards. If you have a Chase card, it's worth getting familiar with the retailers that frequently pop up in your Chase Offers so you can save next time you make a purchase with them.

I slept on Casper’s new $125 down pillow — it’s airy, supportive, and machine-washable

  • Casper recently released a $125 Down Pillow with an airy yet supportive design.
  • I've been sleeping on it, and I'm impressed — it's structured, fluffy, and adapts to different sleeping positions throughout the night.
  • If you're interested in trying it for yourself, you've got the protection of a 100-night sleep trial to make sure you love it before committing.

Once an up-and-coming David, mattress startup Casper has so dominated the New York City subway car ads and the direct-to-consumer mattress space that it has started to feel like Goliath. Unconsciously, I had shifted my attention to the smaller, the younger, and the less traveled (as a commerce reporter, I am well aware that there are always plenty of worthy new companies to discover).

But, Casper recently released a $125 down pillow, and I took home the one they sent to our office to test. I was already a fan of other feather down pillows listed at a similar price point, and Casper's had the ease of being machine washable, including a 100-night sleep trial, and offering free shipping and returns.

down pillow Gallery 2

If you're always itching for something undiscovered, I have bad news for you. The Casper Down Pillow is very good.

It's fluffy and airy while simultaneously feeling supportive and structured. I've slept on my side, stomach, and back, and was never disappointed — no weak thin spots or the sides ballooning up around my face. Like other down pillows I use and love, the Casper iteration has a firm internal core and softer external chambers so the center is dense enough for neck support and the outer edges are light and airy enough to adapt to the slope of your neck in any position.

In terms of the materials, the outer shell is a breathable cotton that stays cool throughout the night, and the down is certified by the Responsible Down Standard. Over the nights that I've had it, I've found myself regularly gravitating toward this pillow over any of my others. You may have to occasionally fluff it like any other down pillow, but it responds well.

The bottom line

Casper is responsible for one of the best mattresses on the internet, good sheets, and a good duvet cover. It also makes a great down pillow.

If you're interested in picking one up for yourself, you can shop the Standard for $125 and the King for $165. And, thanks to the 100-night sleep trial, you can make sure you're really in love with it before committing.

This personal-care startup wants you to ditch single-use plastic products — I tried its bar shampoo and mouthwash tablets and was pleasantly surprised

Product Suite

  • By Humankind is a personal grooming line that aims to eliminate single-use plastic. Once you use up a stick of deodorant or mouth wash tablets, you can order refills online without an added container.
  • Products are free of ingredients that have been linked to harmful health effects, so they're safe for daily routines. Find all the ingredients explained here
  • I tried By Humankind Shampoo ($12.95), Mouthwash ($9.95), and Deodorant ($14.95) to see how they perform in real life. Overall, they're a good option for personal grooming. They won't be for everyone, but they perform well if you're willing to adapt to a slightly new process.

If you were so inclined, you could measure our lives in a breadcrumb trail of plastic bottles. Months and years accumulate into piles: shampoos, deodorants, laundry detergent bottles, cleaning supplies... the list goes on.

It makes sense. Plastic is one of the most convenient materials in the world — it's lightweight, strong, and cheap. Some have said it's what made modern life possible. But it takes an estimated 450 years for one bottle to biodegrade. (For context, if the Mayflower's pilgrims had discarded plastic six-pack rings when they arrived, they'd likely still be around.) And while recycling seems like a solution, a 2018 report found that the vast majority of plastic — 79 percent— is actually in landfills or discarded as litter.

One of the most prolific offenders is personal care items. They're part of our daily routines, and that $10 shampoo bottles is often partly or fully unrecyclable. Instead of being reused, it becomes a discarded relic of a 3-week portion of our lives.

Enter By Humankind, a startup co-founded by Brian Bushell and Joshua Goodman to eliminate single-use plastics from daily routines. To do it, they created a line of high-performing products that utilize safe ingredients and come in refillable containers. When customers run out, order refills arrive in paper-based pods.

By Humankind offers a range of grooming products priced from $10 to $15.

As of now, By Humankind offers shampoo, mouthwash tablets, cotton swabs, and deodorant ranging in price from $9.95 to $14.95. Customers can choose their favorite scents, and the color of their refillable containers.

Mouthwash tablets ($9.95) are formulated with baking soda, menthol, and natural flavoring among other natural ingredients. Just drop one into a bit of water to use.

Shampoo bars ($12.95) are cold-pressed through a process that includes three weeks for bars to cure, which creates harder bars that lost longer. They contain all-natural ingredients and are free of sulfates that can strip hair of natural oils.

Cotton swabs ($9.95) are 100% biodegradable, made from bamboo and cotton.

Deodorants ($14.95) are made from all-natural ingredients. The startup cites research from an independent certified lab that their particular formula is 40% better at killing Staphylococcus hominis (the bacteria that causes body odor) than other leading natural deodorants.

For curious, in-the-know shoppers, By Humankind is transparent about their ingredients and lists them here on the site

By Humankind formulas were designed first and foremost to pass performance tests.

One major concern with alternative products is that what you gain in safety you lose in performance. But By Humankind's natural formulas were designed to pass performance tests. According to Bushell, "For the deodorant, that meant killing body odor-causing bacteria faster than the leading product. For the mouthwash, that meant a clean that lasted, without the burn typically associated with mouthwash. For the shampoo, that meant a thick lather that cleaned thoroughly without stripping hair of the natural oils that give hair its vibrancy."

Beyond refillable containers, By Humankind aims to minimize your impact on the environment.

For every purchase of a product that comes in a plastic container, one dollar goes toward removing plastic waste from the ocean. By Humankind containers are also guaranteed for life.

On top of using refillable containers and sending refills in paper-based pods, Bushell told Business Insider the company has other eco-friendly practices in place, including using recycled pulp whenever possible and avoiding seasonal products.

Over the course of a year, Bushell estimates that anyone who subscribes to the site's current offerings will eliminate approximately 5 pounds of single-use plastic waste.

The company is young at 6 months old, but its founders have a veteran eye.

Bushell and Goodman both have an impressive track record of investing in the right new ideas. Bushell was the founding CEO of Baked by Melissa, and Goodman led marketing efforts for Bonobos and Outdoor Voices as well as the e-commerce arm of both presidential campaigns for Barack Obama.

Products that address plastic waste— designed for a burgeoning wave of eco-minded shoppers — are their latest effort.

To see if the products could live up to the worthwhile company ethos, I tried By Humankind shampoo, mouthwash, and deodorant.

BarSuite2

Shampoo, available in three scents, $12.95

Order refills here

I'm a fan of shampoo bars because they're eco-friendly and economical — without the unnecessary addition of water, the super-concentrated bars last far longer than traditional options. They're also easier to travel with, though you'll want to also get a soap dish for your at-home shower. This one smells good, foams up nicely, and leaves my hair feeling both clean and hydrated. As someone who has had keratin treatments in the past, I also appreciate the versatility of it being sulfate-free. Like all shampoo bars, it'll require newcomers to adapt slightly to a new process, but this bar lathers well. If I could only buy one thing from the line again, it'd be this.

MouthwashInCupB

Mouthwash, available in two container colors, $9.95

Order refills here

These were ideal for camping and traveling since they come in a compact container and aren't liquid, but it took me a while to get used to them. You drop a tablet into a bit of water and swish that combination around in your mouth. You won't have that my-throat-is-on-fire feeling associated with a lot of traditional brands, but my mouth did feel cleaner after using.

DeodorantKindfill+Container

Deodorant, available in four container colors, $14.95

Order refills here

I love the idea of natural deodorants, but most of them simply don't perform as well as formulas that utilize aluminum or parabens (the potentially harmful ingredients required by the FDA to call a product an actual antiperspirant). By Humankind's deodorant worked well enough for me on days with minimal activity, but didn't entirely combat stink on New York's hot summer days. I relied on traditional antiperspirants for times when I really couldn't get by with smelling slightly musky. All in all, I'd recommend it if you're committed to the cause or are looking for a passable-but-not-perfect option, but not if you're expecting it to perform like Degree at the gym.

Bottom line

Overall, By Humankind addresses environmental concerns with good products and perks for shoppers. If you're not willing to adapt your habits slightly, though, you probably aren't going to appreciate them enough to keep buying. I'm a fan of shampoo bars and like By Humankind's bar enough to keep buying it, and the mouthwash tablets are small miracles for things like traveling and camping. If you're curious and open to making your routine more eco-friendly, you'll probably like what you're getting yourself into.

The end is near for the Airbus A380 superjumbo jet. Here's how it went from airline status symbol to reject in just 10 years

Airbus A380

  • The Airbus A380 is the largest passenger and most expensive airliner in the world.
  • The superjumbo has now been in service for more than a decade.
  • Airbus has booked just 290 orders for the plane and has struggled to find buyers — 239 of those orders have been delivered as of July 2019.
  • The A380 is too big, expensive, and inefficient for most operators.
  • Earlier this year, Airbus announced it will end production of the A380 in 2021.

The end is looming for the Airbus A380, following Airbus' announcement earlier this year that it will end production of the double-decker in 2021.

Things were much different back in 2007 when the Airbus A380 entered service to great fanfare. The gargantuan jet, dubbed the superjumbo, was designed to take everything that made the Boeing 747 an icon and push it to the limits of modern engineering.

The superjumbo hasn't been the game changer Airbus had hoped it would become when the massive jet was conceived two decades ago. This is especially the case on the financial front.

For much of the plane's life, Airbus has struggled to find airlines willing to put the A380 into service.

With a price tag of $445.6 million, the A380 is one of the most expensive and lavish airplanes ever built. With room for as many as 800 passengers, the double-decker's sheer size means it's an occasion whenever a superjumbo arrives.

Read more: The $446 million Airbus A380 is the largest and most expensive airliner in the world. Take a look inside.

But in a cost-conscious market and with fluctuating fuel prices, the very attributes that made the plane stand out may have also doomed it. Some say the A380 came two decades too late, while others say that with increasing airport congestion, the plane is ahead of its time.

Some industry observers, such as the Teal Group analyst Richard Aboulafia, have gone so far as to call it the biggest mistake in the history of Airbus. According to Aboulafia, the A380 is a poorly executed aircraft designed for a market that doesn't really exist. As a result, the $25 billion that Airbus spent on the A380 program could have been better used elsewhere, like on a rival for Boeing's next-generation 777X or on a true replacement for the aging Boeing 757, Aboulafia told Business Insider.

"It's painful, but in the long run, it's best," Aboulafia said regarding the end of the A380 production run.

Thus, production ends with just 290 planes. Airbus has already delivered 239 A380s. Only 50 A380 are yet to be delivered.

The plane is a polarizing machine, with some viewing it as an eye-sore, and others as a testament to the marvels of modern engineering.

Here's a look at the topsy-turvy history of the Airbus A380 superjumbo.

FOLLOW US: on Facebook for more car and transportation content!

On April 27, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. local time, the first Airbus A380 prototype opened up the throttles of its four massive turbofan engines.

As the superjumbo took off from Airbus' facility in Toulouse, France, the largest commercial airliner around was actually flying.

But the A380's story actually started decades earlier.

During the 1970s, Airbus' A300B was the new kid in the world of commercial airliners.

It spent the decade trying to break into a market dominated by the Boeing 747 jumbo jet.

The 747's size, performance, and efficiency helped lower operating costs for airlines enough to make air travel affordable for the masses.

By the early 1990s, Airbus was in a much different position. Its narrow-body A320 family, which helped pioneer civilian fly-by-wire technology, was well on its way to becoming the second-best-selling jetliner in history.

At the same time, the company unveiled its new A330 ...

... and A340 family wide-body jets. The two jets offered viable alternatives to Boeing's 767 and 777 wide-bodies. Now, Airbus has set its sights on a bigger target ...

... the Boeing 747-400. Airbus wanted to produce an aircraft even bigger than Boeing's latest jumbo jet — with lower operating costs.

The result was a double-decker concept called the A3XX.

The A3XX would eventually morph into the A380 superjumbo.

The A380 is built in a 1.6-million-square-foot assembly plant at Airbus headquarters in Toulouse.

At 239 feet long, 79 feet tall, and 262 feet from wingtip to wingtip, it's a big plane.

Only the Boeing 747-8 is longer, at 250 feet and two inches (although the A380 can carry many more passengers).

According to Airbus, in a typical four-class seating arrangement, the superjumbo can carry as many as 544 passengers, with a range of more than 9,400 miles. In a high-density configuration, the A380 is certified to carry as many as 868 passengers — 538 on the main deck, 330 on the upper floor.

Power for the A380 comes from a quartet of engines from suppliers Rolls-Royce and Engine Alliance.

The A380's flight crew operates from a state-of-the-art glass cockpit. Like all modern Airbus jets, the aircraft is flown using a side stick, with a fly-by-wire control system.

After its maiden flight, the A380 completed a flight-test program before entering commercial service in 2007.

As an airliner, the A380 promised luxury and comfort on an unprecedented scale.

The Airbus jumbo delivered, at least to airlines that wanted to take advantage of luxurious options. Premium features, such as walk-up bars ...

... private lounges ...

... and bathrooms with showers set the superjumbo apart from its rivals.

And then there are the first-class suites that Emirates offers ...

... the even larger first-class suites that Singapore unveiled ...

Read about Singapore Airlines' new A380 suites »

... and Etihad's The Residence.

It's a 125-square-foot flying home.

On October 15, 2007, Singapore Airlines took delivery of the first production A380.

Soon, other global airlines, such as Korean Air ...

... Lufthansa ...

... Qantas ...

... British Airways ...

... Malaysia Airlines ...

... Thai Airways ...

... Air France ...

... Qatar Airways ...

... Asiana Airlines ...

... China Southern ...

... and Etihad took delivery of the plane.

Portugal's HiFly became the first airline to operate a second-hand A380 when it took delivery of an ex-Singapore Airlines jet in the summer of 2018.

Japan's All Nippon Airways recently became the latest airline to introduce the A380, which it flies between Tokyo and Honolulu, HI.

But no customer is more important than Emirates and its CEO, Shiekh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, seen here with Airbus CEO Tom Enders.

Emirates accounts for 123 of the 274 of the A380s ever ordered.

Why does Emirates love the A380 so much, at a time when most of the airlines in the world have stayed away?

Emirates is a predominantly long-haul international airline whose business is built around funneling millions of passengers through its palatial central hub in Dubai and then on to destinations around the world.

As a result, Emirates needs an aircraft that can carry a lot of passengers for very long distances — a perfect job for the A380.

But few airlines use Emirates' strategy. These days, the trend in the industry is to offer direct flights using smaller long-range aircraft.

Instead of Emirates' dedicated hub-and-spoke route model, most airlines have moved towards more point-to-point flying. This has allowed smaller, more efficient twinjets like the Boeing 777 ...

... and the Airbus A330 to become the dominant forces in long-haul flying.

Smaller next-generation composite wide-bodies like the Boeing 787 Dreamliner offer airlines more flexibility and less risk. According to the CEO of Qantas, Alan Joyce, it costs less to operate two Dreamliners than it does to fly a single A380.

As a result, the A380 never developed into a true workhorse like the 747. Instead, it has been relegated to a niche aircraft economically feasible only on routes with heavy airport congestion.

Boeing has similarly all but given up on the 747-8 as a passenger jet. Only the freighter version remains in production, at a rate of just one plane every two months.

Boeing expects the next generation, twin-engine 777X to be its new flagship.

With early production A380s coming to the end of their 10-year leases, Airbus will likely have to contend with competition for its own used planes. However, early signs for the second-hand market aren't promising. German investment firm Dr. Peters Group has decided to sell its off-lease A380s for spare parts after it couldn't find any takers for the plane.

Emirates Airline president, Sir Tim Clark, has for years pushed Airbus to make a more cost-effective version of the plane with upgraded aerodynamics and a new fuel-efficient engine called the A380neo. That hasn't happened.

Airbus has been reluctant to invest the kind of money needed to develop a new version of the A380. In 2017, Airbus offered its customers a moderately updated version of the plane, called the A380 Plus, with room for 80 more people and new winglets for better fuel economy. So far, there have been no takers.

Unlike with the Boeing 747, the A380 freighter never came to fruition, so Airbus won't be able to subsist on sales of a cargo variant while it waits for passenger-plane sales to rebound.

In January 2018, Emirates ordered 20 additional A380s that would have kept the A380 production line moving for the next decade.

However, that deal fell apart. In the end, even the A380's most loyal customer couldn't hold on any longer. Emirates cut 39 A380s from its original order of 162 planes and bought smaller twin-engine Airbus A330neos and A350s instead.

Even though A380 production ends in 2021. The planes are expected to fly on for years to come. So, if you're still hoping to fly on one, you have plenty of time left.

The wildest costumes at Burning Man over the years

burning man

  • When it's nearly 100 degrees at Burning Man, an annual, nine-day art event and temporary community in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada, clothing tends to be limited, and oftentimes even optional.
  • But for those who do choose to wear clothing, Burning Man is all about the costumes.
  • Bikinis, body paint, tutus, masks, headdresses, wigs, floral crowns, and feathers — it's all there and often worn all at once.
  • Burners, as the festival-goers are known, pay no mind to global fashion trends at the yearly festival — the only branded style they're concerned with is their own.

With a festival that's all about art and self expression, it's only natural that costumes have become a huge part of the Burning Man culture.

It's not uncommon to see burners — as festival-goers are called — riding bikes around The Playa — the festival grounds — dressed in bunches of tule ...

... or lots of feathers.

Feathers have a fairly strong presence at the festival.

Whether they're attached to clothing as an accent feature ...

... used as wings ...

... worn as a crucial part of a costume ...

... or worn as part of an elaborate headdress, you can't go a day at the festival without seeing some feathers.

Some burners wear them on their heads while others wear them around their waists.

Headdresses are a popular accessory unto themselves, though.

Some headwear comes in the form of unicorn horns ...

... or deep-sea-diving helmets ...

... while others take the form of different animals like these twin, bird-shaped hair accessories.

Some headwear takes on more of an EDM — electric dance music — festival vibe with colorful, mesh tubes ...

... while others have more of a DIY feel.

Wigs are also a popular choice for Burning Man headwear.

People even match them to their outfits.

Colorful hair, in general, is a big trend on The Playa.

Check out this black and white mohawk.

Sometimes headwear is part of a full look like this ethereal outfit fully-equipped with wings ...

... this wearable crate with dalmatian-patterned accessories ...

... this springtime look with a watermelon top and shorts and a floral headband ...

... this carrot-themed costume ...

... this praying mantis ...

... and this genie-themed outfit.

You'll likely spot couples coordinating their costumes.

These two are wearing matching striped outfits.

And these two are wearing matching wrap-around sunglasses and metallic necklaces.

Groups of friends also tend to dress in themes ...

... like this regal-looking group ...

... and that means sporting similar accessories, too.

Popular accessories include beautiful umbrellas ...

... backpacks for carrying around water, snacks, or offerings for fellow burners ...

... scarves — both for the look of them and to help block the dust during a storm ...

... tutus ...

... seriously, so many tutus ...

... wide-brimmed hats ...

... goggles to protect against the dust ...

... and possibly the most ubiquitous of all accessories, bicycles.

Some festival-goers make their bikes look as funky as their costumes.

This red, devilish bike and costume is a full theme.

As is this bike and cart decked out like a horse and chariot.

But some are stand-alone works of art like this scorpion-themed bike.

Some accessories aren't as explicit. We're not sure what this was meant to be, but it looks like a mythical sea creature.

As do these guys.

This woman is sporting horns, forehead jewelry, some sort of wig, and a white tank top.

This woman has the wig and high-socks combo going on.

Water guns seem like a very useful accessory in the heat of the desert.

One big style trend at the festival is the absence of clothing.

It's pretty common to see people without shirts or pants ...

... and sometimes without anything at all.

Some people wear full-face masks.

Check out this person who made themselves look like a dog.

Others just choose to cover parts of their face.

This guy spread the love in a red tutu, blue crop top, and a bowtie.

It can get so hot that burners can be seen wearing simply bathing suits and bra tops.

Swimwear is everywhere.

Some add flair to their swimwear, like the furry additions seen below.

One-piece bathing suits and bikinis alike, it's funny to see so many people in swimwear with no body of water in sight.

Although it's typically hot during the day, weather in the desert can be unpredictable. Some people choose to bundle up and wrap up in thick scarves.

It's not unheard of for someone to be in a bathing suit while it's cold out, or a sweater while it's hot — that's the beauty of Burning Man.

And some people wear warm-weather clothes with cold-weather accessories all at once.

Regardless of the actual clothing items worn it's clear that plenty of burners believe the more color, the better ...

... tye-dye and kaleidoscopic patterns included.

But not everyone feels the same way about color. Some burners keep it all-white.

Even all-white feathers make appearances.

Face and body paint is also a big part of some costumes.

It is just another form of beautiful artwork, after all.

This dripping candle theme is a true masterpiece.

Regardless of what burners are wearing, the point is that it's their own personal style.

And like everything else at Burning Man — from the bikes to the art — even the costumes light up at night ...

keeping the festival illuminated, even when the fire's burned out.

How to figure out what your Lyft rating is, as a driver or passenger

  • If you want to know what your Lyft rating is, the process will depend on whether you are a driver or passenger.
  • Drivers can see their Lyft rating within the driver app, while passengers aren't given that information and will have to either ask a driver or contact Lyft to find out.
  • Both drivers and passengers can give each other a Lyft rating after their ride – on a scale of one to five stars – and the rating system is used to match drivers with passengers and monitor poor behavior on Lyft.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

When it comes to rideshare apps like Uber and Lyft, your rating is everything. It's the difference between getting rides quickly and easily and getting passed over, and consistently low ratings for drivers can even lead to account deactivation.

If you're a driver, your score is calculated based on an average of your last 100 rides (or all of your previous rides if you haven't yet had 100 rides), and the rating is based on a star scale from one to five, with five being the best.

According to Lyft, an "awesome" rating is 4.8 or higher while those who get a score below that, "may want to consider ways to improve it" — at least when it comes to the driver score. In case you're worried about missed requests or cancelled rides negatively impacting your ability to earn money via the program, those have no bearing on your rating.

For passengers, Lyft considers a three star rating or lower not "up to par." Either way, higher is better and being polite goes a long way.

Here's how to figure out what your Lyft rating is, whether you're a driver or a passenger:

What is my Lyft rating?

How drivers can find their Lyft rating

Your rating is located within the app, within the dashboard's "Driving History" section.

You'll also get an update about your rating (as well as how it compares to the previous summary) in your weekly driver summary emails.

To find out how to become a Lyft driver, read our article, "How to apply to become a Lyft driver, even if you don't have your own car."

How passengers can find their Lyft rating

Right now, there's no way to view your passenger rating within the Lyft app. So you'll have to be a bit creative to find out what your passenger rating actually is.

However, it's worth noting that the default rating (meaning the driver didn't manually rate the passenger during an allotted amount of time) is five stars.

To figure out your passenger score, you have a couple of options: Ask a friendly Lyft driver the next time you use the service, or contact Lyft to see if they will share that information with you.
