  • You can create a YouTube playlist to curate a selection of videos that you want to watch or share together.
  • Once you create a YouTube playlist, you can add videos, remove them, or change their order any time.
  • You can set playlists to be public and available to anyone, private and accessible only to certain users, or unlisted, so people can't find it.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

YouTube playlists are a great way to create curated content you can enjoy or share with others.

You can create playlists of your favorite music videos, of great news blooper reels, of clips featuring you and your friends, or of any of the millions upon millions of videos on this massive global media platform.

And once created, it's remarkably easy to add to, remove from, or edit a YouTube playlist.

You can drag and drop videos to change their order, change the public or private (or unlisted) status any time, and rename the playlist endless times.

But first, of course, you need to create a YouTube playlist. Here's how:

How to create a YouTube playlist

1. Begin watching the first video you wish to add to the playlist.

2. Under the video, click the word "SAVE."

3. On the popup window, click "Create new playlist."

Screen Shot 2019 07 30 at 1.56.45 PM

4. Name the playlist, and select its public or private status, then hit "CREATE."

Screen Shot 2019 07 30 at 1.57.40 PM

5. To add a video, go to the next video you want added and again hit "SAVE."

6. Check the box beside the playlist to which you wish to save the video, and it will be added to the list; note that you can add a video to more than one playlist at a time.

NOW WATCH: 5 things wrong with Apple's lightning cable

One email put a 24-year old on a path from intern to COO in six months. Here's the exact text he used.

Raven Beria Headshot

  • At age 24, Raven Beria was working as an intern at a wealth management firm.
  • When he realized he could be contributing much more than he was able to as an intern, Beria drafted a proposal for how he'd help the company grow and emailed it to the head of the firm.
  • He was promoted, and within six months became the COO.
  • Beria shared his journey — along with the exact text of the email that changed his life — with Adrian Granzella Larssen, a content strategist, editorial director, and founder of Sweet Spot Content
  • Click here for more BI Prime stories.

Two years ago, 24-year-old Raven Beria was an intern at Inpac Wealth Solutions, a wealth management firm in Hawaii.

He liked the job, and he was good at it. Perhaps a bit too good, he recalls, because his boss only saw him for the work he did, not the work he was capable of doing. He was spending time on task-related work like event planning and concierge services, but he knew he could contribute in a more strategic capacity on company-wide initiatives like human resources and client experience.

What would most interns in his position do? Probably put in their time until they could find a new gig, or perhaps meet with their manager to understand what a path to promotion might look like.

But Raven took a bolder approach.

Rather than thinking like an intern — or even an employee — he tried to think like a consultant: How could he be an essential partner to his boss, rather than someone who was merely assigned tasks to complete?

"It finally occurred to me: 'How do consultants improve other businesses?'" he explains. He picked up "The Irresistible Consultant's Guide to Winning Clients: 6 Steps to Unlimited Clients & Financial Freedom," by David Fields, the book he considers game-changing. "I learned about the process of communicating the vision back to the CEO, using indicators of success, uncovering challenges, and creating a plan of action."

Inspired by the exercises in the book, Raven drafted a proposal on how he'd help the company grow, added an executive summary, and sent it to the head of the firm.

The result?

Well, it was the email that changed his life.

Read more: Here's exactly what it takes to get accepted into Harvard Business School, according to 5 grads and the managing director of admissions

That proposal led to a meeting with his boss to discuss the future of the company. "He asked me a lot of questions on how I would go about accomplishing some of those ideas," he recalls. "This was well beyond our normal conversations before, which was, 'Here's what we're going to do next.' Instead, it was more collaborative, and he seemed so genuinely curious to know my thoughts."

Adrian Granzella Larssen

Ultimately, Raven was promoted from intern to Operations Manager, then six months later COO. Best of all, the move gave him a new perspective on how he'll approach work for the rest of his life. "Instead of seeing myself as an employee or even as an executive, I now view the company I work for as if it's my client, and I'm the consultant," he says. He's also used this experience to launch his own branding firm, Brandalaxy

We'll get to the email in a minute, but first: why did it work so well? Here are my thoughts:

Ask not what your boss can do for you, but what you can do for your boss

Raven focused not on what he wanted, but what his manager needed. Instead of asking for a promotion or new job right away, he talked about his boss' vision and how he could help accomplish it. "He felt relieved to know that someone can analyze the little details of his big picture, so we can focus on being more effective," Raven recalls.

Show, don't tell

Rather than describing how he could think strategically about the company, he showed his capabilities by attaching the proposal he had put together. With that, his boss had tangible proof of what he could accomplish in the future — and was much more comfortable moving him into the new role.

Get to the "how"

Most people, when asking for a promotion, describe the "what" and the "why" of the job they want, but Raven went one step further and talked through the "how." He outlined what would happen to the tasks that were currently on his plate, and how he and his manager would work together moving forward, making it easy for his boss to envision their new working relationship and say "yes" to the arrangement.

So what was that language that got him to a "yes"? Here's the exact email Raven sent:

Troy,

You've got a large vision for Inpac. The question is, how are we gonna accomplish it?

In today's meeting, I'd like to:

  • Clarify your crazy vision
  • List some obstacles we'll need to overcome
  • Provide a detailed plan and list of actions to get us where you want

Since you were gone last week, I've been staying up past midnight on several occasions thinking of executing what you want. I was reminded how I can be stubborn in looking for the problems in things before trying to see just how feasible your goals are.

And I think I found my reasoning. It's because of my resource allocation, and how I'm being leveraged.

At the end of the day, I want to think less like an employee and more like a partner working in your best interest to execute your vision. This means less task-oriented work and more project-focused jobs that involve business development and human resources. I must emphasize also that not only do I think this is where my strengths lie, but where I am most happy in doing my job. Most importantly, while you can hire someone else to do things like event planning, marketing, and concierge (which I've been having to spend a lot of my time on recently), I firmly believe you won't be able to get someone else as devoted into putting the time and effort into the overall strategic direction and execution of Inpac's future.

But of course, "What can't be measured can't be managed."

Moving forward, I'd like to report to you differently. Considering these are high-level projects, we'll collaborate using a single physical binder.

At the end of every Friday, I'll provide a one-page exec summary on the major things I've done and things I'll need from you to execute your vision, and we'll keep on attaching that to the binder for you to hold onto. You can review this over the weekend, and we can discuss on our Monday Strategic meetings.

This will involve four major projects on:

  • Practice Management
  • Client Experience
  • Talent Management
  • Human Resources

By doing this, we can make sure we're on the same page and hold each other accountable for focusing our efforts on the longevity of Inpac.

Good? Great. Let's get to work.

If you're feeling similarly underutilized in your role, here's Raven's final piece of advice: "You know, they say you should dress for the job you want, but I've learned actions far outweigh both words and looks. Instead, we should replicate the actions of those who've accomplished what we want to accomplish. That was the game-changer for me."

Raven Beria is still in his COO post today. He's also in the process of launching a branding firm, Brandalaxy

Adrian Granzella Larssen is the founder of Sweet Spot Content, which helps world-class marketers, thought leaders, and publishers create authentic, engaging content. Previously, she was the first employee and editor-in-chief of TheMuse.com, a content-first career destination. She's also the author of Your Year Off, a digital guide to traveling the world inspired by her experience traveling to 30 countries in 12 months. (Say hi and follow her travels on Instagram.)

No problem, just change that YouTube name and get on your way. YouTube makes it easy to change your username, and the process takes less than a minute.

A study breaks down who has the best prices between Amazon, Target, and Walmart in 5 different categories — here's where to shop for what

Amazon Target Walmart 4x1

  • A recent report from LendEdu compared prices on products across five categories at Target, Amazon, and Walmart to find which one actually offers the lowest prices.
  • The report found that Walmart offers the lowest prices on average, followed by Amazon, then Target, though different retailers reigned supreme in different categories.
  • Below, we break down the report to show you which retailer has the best prices on which categories, including tech, kitchen and appliances, food and beverage, and more.

Amazon has been dominating the e-commerce space for a while now. With its free, two-day Prime shipping, it's been lauded as the place to shop when you're looking for convenience and great deals.

But Walmart and Target are proving they're not to be forgotten. Each retailer offers free two-day shipping on orders of $35 or more, and you don't even need a membership to get these perks. What's more is that they both have competitive pricing, so it can be hard to know which of the big three mega-retailers truly has the best prices.

The only way you could really know which brand is the cheapest is if you combed through each site and compared the prices of a random sampling of products to ultimately come to a conclusion. That seems like it may be more effort than it's worth.

That's why LendEdu, a company that educates consumers on financial products like loans and credit cards, did that work for you by comparing 50 nearly identical items from Amazon, Walmart, and Target to see how pricing differed at the three retailers.

Products were split into the following categories:

  1. Home goods
  2. Food and beverage
  3. Kitchen and appliances
  4. Technology and entertainment
  5. Miscellaneous items

LendEdu deduced that, overall, Walmart offered the cheapest products, with Amazon and Target shortly behind, respectively. But, the winners also varied category by category.

You can find the whole report here. Below, we'll break down the comparisons by category, crowning a winner that offers the best prices on average in each, to give you a better understanding of what these price differences really look like. You may be surprised at some of the findings.

Note: Percentages used in the report are based off prices at the time of publication. Prices in this article may differ from report to reflect any updates or changes in price.

Home goods

Winner: Walmart

On average, Walmart had the best prices on home goods like soaps, toothpastes, detergents, and more. Compared to Amazon, Target was 1.30% more expensive in total, while Walmart was 0.67% cheaper. Amazon still offered the best price on certain products, like Lysol wipes.

Products:

  • Gain Flings Liquid Laundry Detergent Pacs, 96-count:
  • Dove Men+Care Clean Comfort Deodorant Twin Pack:
  • Lysol Disinfecting Wipes, 105-count:

Food and beverage

Winner: Target

Target, Amazon, and Walmart all have their own flourishing grocery operations, but in this category comparison, Target came out on top. On average, Target was 7.30% less expensive than Amazon. Walmart was next — on average, food and beverage products at Walmart were 4.61% cheaper than at Amazon. Food and beverage items were classified as anything for human or animal consumption.

Products:

  • Heinz Tomato Ketchup, 64-ounce:
  • Poland Spring 16.9-ounce Water Bottles, 24-pack:
  • Lay's Classic Potato Chips, 12-pack:

Kitchen and appliances

Winner: Amazon

Most prices in this category were the same, but when they weren't, Amazon offered the best value on average. Anything normally found in a kitchen setting (think: microwaves, coffee makers, etc.) fit into this category. LendEdu found that, on average, items at Target were 1.16% more expensive than those at Amazon, while Walmart's products were 10.62% more expensive than Amazon's, on average.

Products:

Technology and entertainment

Winner: Walmart

Walmart may not be your destination for all things tech, but maybe it should be. LendEdu found that, on average, tech products were 4.19% cheaper at Walmart than Amazon. Tech at Target was a little more expensive than at Amazon 1.42% more on average based on findings. Still, a few items at Walmart were more expensive than at the other two retailers.

Products:

Miscellaneous items

Winner: Amazon

Miscellaneous items were classified as household items that did not fall into the other four categories, like pens and sunscreen. While Target did have a price win this category, the overall winner was Amazon, with the lowest prices on majority of products in the category. On average, Target was 4.39% more expensive in total, while Walmart was 4.99% more expensive in total compared to Amazon.

Products:
  • Neutrogena Clear Face Liquid Lotion Sunscreen:
  • Fiskars Powergear 2 Hedge Shears:
  • Biotrue Contact Lens Solution:

Bottom line

Overall, LendEdu found that Target was only 0.97% more expensive than Amazon and Walmart was only 1.79% cheaper than Amazon, across all categories. If anything, these percentages show that the price differences between these three retail giants are only getting smaller. Each of them are incentivized to get more competitive with their pricing to stay relevant, which is good news for you, the consumer.

If you're going to walk away with anything from these findings, make it this: Do your research if you want the best price. You can sometimes stumble upon some really great prices, whether they be on home goods or technology, just by checking out products on a few different sites. Maybe you want to do your snack shopping at Amazon, get your home goods at Target, and buy your tech at Walmart. Or, maybe you want to stick to doing all of your shopping on one site for ease of ordering, or an allegiance to a certain retailer, and that's okay.

Prices at these retailers frequently change too, so there really isn't one retailer who will consistently be cheapest. Just know that the most convenient and affordable price may not always be where you think it is.

How to speed up your Windows 10 computer in 7 different ways

$

huawei mbxp windows 10

  • If your computer is running more sluggish than it once did, there are several ways to speed up Windows 10.
  • Your Windows 10 computer might be able to run faster if you tweak certain settings in Windows.
  • To coax additional performance from Windows 10, turn off special effects, uninstall unwanted programs, and change your startup settings.
  • If you are not already using an SSD for your hard drive storage, it's the single most effective upgrade you can make to improve your computer's performance.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

People sometimes wonder how it was possible for the guidance computer in Apollo 11 — a computer with less memory than the cheapest Windows 10 PC in use today — to reach the moon.

The answer: It didn't waste any processing power on a fancy interface, or multi-tasking.

You can eke some extra performance out of your own Windows 10 computer by making it a little more minimalist, like that original Apollo 11 computer.

Here are seven ways you can speed up Windows 10

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Windows 10 Home (For $139.99 at Best Buy)

SanDisk Ultra 512 GB SSD (For $69.99 at Best Buy)

Reduce the amount of apps that open at startup

If your computer takes a long time to boot, the most likely culprit is that you have too many programs slowing down the startup process.

This means there may be a lot of unnecessary programs running in the background, which continue to slow things down even after Windows is fully booted. Here's how to fix it:

1. Right-click the Start button and choose "Task Manager."

2. In Task Manager, click the "Startup" tab.

3. If you see a program you don't want to run at startup, right-click it and choose "Disable."

Uninstall bloatware and other unwanted programs

There's a good chance your computer came with a lot of unwanted programs that run in the background and slow things down. Often called "bloatware," they rarely serve a useful purpose.

You should take a few minutes to uninstall programs you don't want or need from your computer. To do that, follow the steps in the article "How to properly uninstall programs on Windows 10, to protect your computer and free up space."

Disable Windows special effects

Windows 10 has a lot of special effects — some very obvious, others quite subtle. They make the experience of using your computer more fun and enjoyable, but they might also be slowing your PC down, especially if it's older or has a slow processor.

Here's how to turn off some of these special effects.

1. Click the Start button and start the Control Panel.

2. Click "System."

3. Click "Advanced system settings."

4. On the System Properties window, make sure you are on the Advanced tab and click "Settings."

5. Here you can manually turn off special effects or just click "Adjust for best performance."

Turn off window transparency

You might not have noticed, but there are some subtle transparency effects built into various surfaces in Windows. Open the Start menu, for example, and you should see a faint, blurred impression of whatever lies behind it.

If you don't want to sacrifice processing speed for such a small effect, you can turn it off entirely (and probably not notice the aesthetic difference).

1. Click the Start button and click the Settings icon, which is shaped like a gear and is right above the Power icon.

2. Click "Personalization."

3. Click "Colors."

4. Scroll down and turn off "Transparency effects" by sliding the switch to the left.

Run your computer at full power

Your computer might be running at something less than full speed, depending upon how your power management controls are set.

Designed to make your laptop battery last longer, Windows offers several power plans that deliberately slow down your PC. Here's how to choose a higher power plan:

1. Click the Start button and start the Control Panel.

2. Click "Power Options."

3. For the best overall processing speed, choose "High performance."

Keep Windows up to date

Make sure your computer stays up to date. Microsoft issues regular patches and updates for Windows, and while many of these are related to improving your computer's security (which is also important), some also improve performance.

To see if there are updates waiting to be installed:

1. Click the Start button and click the Settings icon, which is shaped like a gear and is right above the Power icon.

2. Click "Update & security."

3. You can check for updates or install and updates waiting to be installed.

Use an SSD or install additional memory

Finally, you can dramatically improve the performance of your computer by increasing its memory and storage.

If your computer has a traditional hard drive — one with spinning metal platters — replacing it with a solid-state drive (SSD) can make a world of difference. An SSD has the same kind of memory as a USB flash drive (though much, much faster) and it will enable Windows to boot several times faster and programs to start in a fraction of the time.

Adding an SSD is the single biggest improvement you can make to a PC, and it can make a bigger difference than upgrading to a computer with a faster processor.

In addition, if you do a lot of resource-intensive tasks with your computer, like photo editing, video production, or gaming, adding additional memory can help as well. You should have no less than 4GB of RAM in your computer for Windows to run efficiently, but additional memory can improve performance.

From Volkswagens to Paganis to the humble Honda Accord, here are the cars that 10 of the world's wealthiest people have owned

$

  • Billionaires like Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Alphabet CEO Larry Page can afford to drive any car they want.
  • While some of them have splurged on Teslas and Paganis, other high-end rides, others have chosen to stick to Ford pickup trucks and Honda Accords.

If you had all the money in the world, what type of car would you buy? Would it be a $3 million Rolls-Royce, a $574,000 Lamborghini Aventador SVJ, or a more subtle Honda Accord? While some multibillionaires have chosen to spend some of their wealth on expensive cars, others have taken a more modest route.

From million-dollar handbuilt cars to common roadsters, these are the cars nine of some of the wealthiest people in the world drive.

Jeff Bezos

Amazon CEO and founder Jeff Bezos owns a 12% stake in Amazon worth about $114.8 billion following his divorce from his ex-wife, MacKenzie. But despite his wealth, a younger Bezos in 1999 still drove a 1996 Honda Accord, two years after the retailer went public.

When asked about his vehicle of choice in a 1999 episode of "60 Minutes," Bezos said, "This is a perfectly good car."

The MSRP in 1996 was $17,890.

Dustin Moskovitz

Facebook and Asana cofounder Dustin Moskovitz has a net worth of $13.4 billion, according to Forbes. Despite his 3% stake in Facebook, Moskovitz stayed frugal. A 2011 profile of Moskovitz in The Seattle Times noted that he drove a Volkswagen R32 at the time.

The MSRP for the R32 in 2008 was $32,000.

Jack Ma

Jack Ma is the cofounder of the e-commerce and tech conglomerate, The Alibaba Group. The China-based group's 2014 IPO was the world's biggest public stock offering at the time, raising $25 billion.

With a net worth of $37.3 billion, Jack Ma is the second-richest man in China. However, he hs been seen in a Roewe RX5 SUV as recently as October 2018. The RX5's infotainment system is powered by Alibaba's YunOS operating system.

Alice Walton

Alice Walton is one of the heirs to the Walmart fortune and is the second-wealthiest woman in the world. Instead of working for Walmart like her two brothers, Walton decided to curate art, and reportedly has an art collection worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

Walton spent part of her $51.6 billion net worth on her 2006 Ford F-150 King Ranch pickup truck, according to a 2008 Forbes article. The MSRP for the truck that year was $40,930.

Bill Gates

Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, has a net worth of $103.8 billion, allowing him to own several cars such as the 1988 Porsche 959. He supported the passage of the "Show and Display" law that allowed him to take possession of the 959 after it was imported to the United States.

The 959 debuted in 1988 at $300,000 and was once the fastest car in the world.

Mark Zuckerberg

The Facebook founder reportedly purchased a Pagani Huayra in 2014, although he has also owned an Acura TSX, Honda Fit, and Volkswagen Golf GTI.

The MSRP for the 2014 Pagani was $1,400,000. Not a huge outlay for a man worth $74.4 billion.

This startup helps you replace your skin-care routine with clean beauty products using a simple quiz — I tried everything it recommended

  • Follain is a curated one-stop shop for the best in clean beauty. The company tests thousands of non-toxic products and only the ones they love (about 10% of what they test) gets stocked.
  • Follain's personalized Skin Quiz matches you with clean beauty products that specifically cater to your skin type, concerns, and budget.
  • Follain gave me the chance to try the clean beauty products the quiz recommended for me and, surprisingly, I really liked them all.
  • You can take the Skin Quiz here for your own customized results, and if you don't love any of the products, Follain will refund you or initiate a return.

Clean beauty, while increasingly mainstream, is still tough to demystify. We like the idea of non-toxic products, but far fewer of us are willing to spend the money and time figuring out which clean products work just as well or better than the imperfect products we already know work for us.

While a few companies like Beautycounter have demonstrated that clean beauty can come without performance compromises, there's still a need for a central place to discover and shop non-toxic skin care, body care, makeup, and other products.

Enter Follain, a startup founded by Tara Foley in 2013 to address the "blind spot" of leading a healthy life by eating and exercising well, without taking a closer look at the ingredients in her skin and body products.

Follain tests thousands of non-toxic beauty products to curate a store full of great options. You can shop it on your own like any other online marketplace, or with a little extra direction from the experts. The aim is to make clean beauty more accessible and easy to navigate, so it developed a personalized recommendation system where you fill out a quiz about your complexion, and Follain recommends products specifically for your skin. Follain also instituted a perfect match guarantee so you can return or be refunded for any product that missed the mark. And, most importantly, the company only stocks products it has actually vetted. Only about 10% make it into the store.

You can find everything from makeup to hair products, but Follain's Skin Quiz is especially helpful in narrowing clean beauty down to a few hero products. It asks about things like your skin concerns, how much you typically spend on skin-care products, what kinds of products you generally like, and other preferences (no scent? vegan? need SPF?). Then, Follain emails you a copy of your results and send you to a page where you can shop the best products for your skin specifically.

Screen Shot 2019 07 25 at 2.57.01 PM

The company's approval process includes researching products from new and legacy brands, a safety review (check out its restricted ingredients list) and a performance review in which a panel of real women test the products for four to six weeks. From there, Follain's founder and CEO, Tara Foley, tries it and gives the final executive decision.

I tried the Skin Quiz to see if the recommendations felt truly customized and, most importantly, if the non-toxic products I was told to buy were actually as good — if not better than — the products I'd filled my cabinet with without ever checking the ingredients label.

I don't like the way this facial cleanser smells (to me, like an orangesicle) and think $48 is too much to spend on one, but that's where my complaints end. While the price is a lot to ask, I will say the bottle is pretty big and a little goes a long way — five ounces should last me six months, easily.

Thanks to algae extract and jojoba seed oil, it's a smooth, lush cleanser that doesn't strip my skin. Algae's antioxidants help fight free radicals and shield the skin's collagen from damage, and the Jojoba Seed oil is non-comedogenic and packed with vitamins and antioxidants as well. I'll probably go back to my all-time favorite gel cleanser after this bottle runs out since it's cheaper, uses hydroxy acids for a more exfoliating effect, and is also plant-based, but I do love  and look forward to using this one now.

Ursa Major Fortifying Face Balm

Fortifying Face Balm, $36

This Face Balm is a cooling jar of magic that makes my skin feel calm, soft, and hydrated. My one complaint is that it tends to ball up — though that could be from me simply applying too much of it.

The major players are witch hazel, sunflower seed oil, and myrtle oil in this formula. Witch hazel, with its natural ability to purify the skin and tighten pores, is probably a household name for anyone who has dealt with acne. Sunflower seed oil is high in omega-6 fatty acids and vitamin E that hydrates and prevents moisture loss, and myrtle oil acts as an astringent and antiseptic — another combatant against excess oil and acne.

Indie Lee Squalane Facial Oil

Squalane Facial Oil, $14

This is quite simply a vial of squalane oil. Squalane oil, if you haven't already been introduced to skin care's new "it" ingredient, is a byproduct of squalene — something the body produces naturally. It's an emollient, so it'll lock moisture into your skin and work to reduce fine lines and pigmentation.

The vial I got is small — 0.34 fluid ounces — but a little goes a long way, as with most oils. It's lightweight, deeply hydrating, and I don't wake up with a grimy residue. My skin drinks this up — and it's more evenly balanced (not super oily, nor dry halfway through the day) when I use it consistently.

My impressions overall

All in all, I was surprised by a few things.

Firstly, how great the products were. I forgot the ethos was clean beauty. It's great that they're non-toxic, but it's even better that you don't think of them as clean-beauty products — they're just great skin-care that you're excited to use.

Secondly, how well the algorithm worked. I was surprised by how truly personal the recommendations felt. I marked skin clarity as a concern in the Skin Quiz, and the cleanser and face balm both had clearly been designed to keep blemishes at bay.

All in all, I suggest giving it a try if you're interested in clean beauty but need some guidance. If you don't love a product, reach out to the customer service and let them make it right with a refund or return. Just prepare for the fact that you may end up liking every one.

Pharmacy startup Blink Health saves you up to 80% on over 15,000 generic prescription medications — here's how it works

blink health medication

  • Retail price prescription medication is prohibitively expensive. If you have insurance, your policy still doesn't always cover as much as you'd like.
  • Blink Health is a no-commitment, no-fee service that offers access to over 15,000 medications for a fraction of their retail price.
  • Here's the quick and easy process: search for your medication on its site, pay the low price online, then pick it up at a major or local pharmacy near you.

I never particularly enjoy picking up a new prescription from the pharmacy because I know I'll stand at the counter in fraught silence, waiting for the pharmacist to tell me how much it's going to set me back.

Even though I have insurance, it doesn't always cover a lot, and I'm often surprised at how much I still have to pay out of pocket. If you don't have insurance, the damage is even worse. In either case, you feel like you have no choice but to pay for expensive prescriptions, or face the repercussions on your health.

It's a dilemma that millions have to face, but shouldn't. Though you don't have the power to negotiate prices, an online company called Blink Health does. Blink Health works with pharmacies, pharmacy benefit managers and pharmaceutical manufacturers to bring you lower prices on over 15,000 medications.

There are no membership fees or hidden fees, and the process is pretty simple. As long as you have a prescription from your doctor, you can use Blink Health's website or app.

You start by searching for your medication, making sure to match the medication form and dosage to that of your prescription. You'll see two prices, one that's available at major pharmacies and an even lower one available at one specific pharmacy near you.

blink health medication

Here's an example of how much Blink Health saves you on some common medications. It also has a price match guarantee on generic medications. If you find a lower price elsewhere, it will refund you the difference.

blink health medication

After paying online to lock in the price, you receive a "Blink Card," which you can either print out or show on your phone to the pharmacist. Bring this and your prescription to your chosen pharmacy, and they'll fill it like any other prescription. You should pay $0 at the pharmacy.

Its network consists of over 30,000 pharmacy partners nationwide, including major stores like Walmart and Albertsons as well as local independent pharmacies, so it's easy to pick up your prescription at a location convenient for you, or you can have it delivered to you for free in two days.

Whether you're uninsured, insured, or have Medicare, it's always helpful to check Blink Health to see how much you could be paying instead. Especially if you're taking a medication for a long period of time, the significant monthly savings are worth the few minutes of extra effort to look up your medication.

How to save videos and photos you've taken on Snapchat, and one way to save videos from others

$

Snapchat iphone app

Snapchat is a social media app, available for both iPhones and Android phones, that's focused on short-term posts. There's a time limit on how long your photos and videos last on the app once you post them. Think of it as an expiration date. It's pretty much the main draw of the app.

But, for those who are interested, there are ways to save your Snapchat videos (and pictures) to your phone's camera roll, and thereby extend the life of your content. Here's what you need to know to do it.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

iPhone Xs (From $999.99 at Best Buy)

Google Pixel 3 (From $699.99 at Best Buy)

How to save Snapchat videos or pictures to your camera roll

Here's how to save your own videos or pictures on Snapchat to your camera roll, before you've posted them:

1. Open Snapchat and take your video or picture.

2. Tap the down arrow symbol, located toward the left side of the bottom of the screen — you should see a "Saved!" confirmation appear. If you're using an iPhone, the video or picture will be automatically saved to your Camera Roll.

1 HOW TO SAVE SNAPCHAT VIDEOS

3. If you're using an Android, exit out of the video by tapping the "X" in the top-left corner of the screen.

4. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to see your saved Snaps.

5. Tap and hold the video you want to save to your camera roll.

2 HOW TO SAVE SNAPCHAT VIDEOS

6. Select "Export Snap."

7. Tap "Camera Roll" to save the video to your phone's camera roll.

How to save a Snapchat video or picture from your own story

Once you've added a video or picture to your Snapchat story — which you can do while sending your video to friends — you can easily access it to save to your phone. Here's how:

First, open Snapchat and tap your profile icon in the top-left corner of the screen.

If you're using an iPhone:

1. Tap the circle next to "My Story," which should have a thumbnail of whatever you last uploaded to your Story.

2. While the picture or video you want to save is on the screen, swipe up, then tap the down-arrow in the bottom-right of the screen.

3. Your video or picture will be saved to your phone.

If you're using an Android phone:

1. Tap the "My Story" section and then swipe up to view your story videos and pictures.

4 HOW TO SAVE SNAPCHAT VIDEOS

2. Tap the down-arrow in the bottom-left corner of the screen to download your story video or picture.

If you have more than one video or picture, you can easily toggle between them from there. Just make sure that the video or picture you want is the one that's highlighted on that screen.

How to save Snapchat videos from other users

If you want to save someone else's video, you can do so by doing a quick screen recording, though you should note that the other user will likely receive a screenshot notification when you do.

iPhone users can screen record directly through their device's settings, but Android users will have to download an app, like Screen Recorder With Audio And Facecam, Screenshot, AZ Screen Recorder or EZ Screen Recorder, to make it work.

'What is YouTube TV?': Everything you need to know about YouTube's subscription streaming service

$

youtube tv app

  • YouTube TV is a live subscription streaming service that offers over 70 channels.
  • A YouTube TV subscription, which costs $49.99 per month, will provide access to major news and entertainment channels, live sporting events, and a selection of on-demand TV shows and movies.
  • YouTube Premium, which costs an additional $11.99 per month, provides ad-free access to YouTube original shows, documentaries, and movies from its celebrity creators.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

As the days of traditional home cable connections fade into distant memory, it's likely that your home entertainment center is already decked out with subscriptions to Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime and more.

But, it's possible that YouTube's competing live streaming and on-demand platform — YouTube TV — has flown under your radar.

What is YouTube TV?

Launched by the video hosting platform in 2017, YouTube TV is a live TV and on-demand streaming service aimed at cord cutters – people moving away from the traditional cable package towards streaming.

YouTube says the service offers users 70+ channels – including ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, ESPN, HGTV, and TNT – to stream local sports, news, and television.

Wells_YTTV_1.PNG

Exact lineups will vary area to area, and users can get a look ahead at their local lineup by entering their zip-code on YouTube TV's welcome page.

And if live TV isn't really your thing, YouTube TV also offers a large catalog of on-demand shows and movies to binge.

Wells_YTTV_5.PNG

But, this part of the service might be best for catching up on the most recent episodes or seasons of a show, as the on-demand section doesn't have deep collections of old seasons.

How to watch YouTube TV

The streaming service supports up to six users, has unlimited cloud DVR storage, and is compatible with tons of devices: Android and iOS for mobile; Samsung, Sharp, Vizio, Hisense smart TVs; gaming systems like the Xbox One; Chrome and Firefox web browsers; and other streaming platforms like Chromecast, Roku, and Apple TV.

Wells_YTTV_9.PNG

YouTube TV was slow to extend its reach across the US, starting first with select services in Chicago, Los Angeles, the New York City area, Philadelphia, and the San Francisco Bay Area. But, YouTube says it now supports service in 99.5% of households in the United States.

How much is YouTube TV?

The service underwent a price hike in April 2019 and is currently priced at $49.99 per month — a bit pricier than similar competitors Sling TV and Hulu Live TV — but still cheaper than a traditional cable bill, which a study in 2018 found to be an average of $107 per month in the US.

For a fee, users can also add additional channels to their lineup, including AMC Premiere ($5 per month,) CuriosityStream ($3 per month), EPIX ($6 per month), Fox Soccer Plus ($15 per month), NBA League Pass ($39.99 per month), Showtime ($7 per month), Shudder ($6 per month), Starz ($9 per month) and Sundance Now ($7 per month.)

Wells_YTTV_2.PNG

What makes YouTube TV special (for an added cost)

In addition to its lineup and storage capacity, another unique feature that YouTube TV offers is the incorporation of original content from its other subscription service, YouTube Premium.

Originally called YouTube Red, YouTube Premium is an ad-free experience that gives users access to exclusive YouTube original content (including original series, movies and documentaries) created by some of YouTube's celebrity creators.

Wells_YTTV_6.PNG

But there's a catch: a YouTube TV subscription won't get you an ad-free YouTube experience the way YouTube Premium does – for that you'll have to pay for both services (and an extra $11.99 per month.)

The 28 richest American families, ranked

Lauder family

America may not be home to any rich royal families, but that doesn't mean some families haven't created their own sort of empire.

In fact, the United States has quite a few billionaire clans who accumulated their fortunes in vastly different ways. There are the publishing powerhouses that built the Hearst and Newhouse family fortunes; a cosmetics giant, which laid the foundation for the Lauder family fortune; and the families that created their wealth out of household names, like Walmart for the Waltons and Hyatt Hotels for the Pritzkers.

But not all of America's richest families began as entrepreneurs— some were also savvy investors.

Below, meet the richest families in the US, ranked from lowest net worth to highest net worth, starting at $10 billion. Rankings were determined by the most up-to-date estimated net worths available from Forbes and Bloomberg as well as the left-leaning Institute for Policy Studies' "Billionaire Bonanza" report, which looked at 15 dynastically wealthy families from the Forbes 400 list.

28. The Gallo family

Net worth:$10.7 billion

Source of wealth: E & J Gallo Winery

The Gallo family fortune is derived from a few avenues. Brothers Ernest and Julio Gallo founded the world's largest winemaker in Modesto, California. Their other brother, Joseph, assisted with the family business until he opened his first dairy and sold cheese as "Joseph Gallow Cheese." His children currently run Joseph Farms, while the descendants of Ernest and Julio run E & J Gallo Winery, which generates estimated annual revenues of $3.8 billion. The company sells more than wine these days, having added liquor to the list.

T27. The Rockefeller family

Net worth: $11 billion

Source of wealth: Standard Oil

John D. Rockefeller became America's first billionaire after founding Standard Oil in 1870, which eventually controlled a majority of the country's oil refining. He and his son, John Jr., donated more than $1 billion in philanthropic efforts. The family's fortune is split among 174 members.

T27. The Cathy family

Net worth: $11 billion

Source of wealth: Chick-fil-A

Samuel Truett Cathy founded fast-food chain Chick-fil-A in 1967. Since then, the family-owned business has remained in the hands of second- and third-generation family members. Truett's sons, Dan Cathy and Don "Bubba" Cathy, run the company as CEO and executive vice president, respectively — they each have a reported net worth of $5.5 billion, according to the Forbes 400.

T27. The Butt family

Net worth: $11 billion

Source of wealth: H.E. Butt

Florence Butt founded H-E-B grocery store in Texas in 1905, which her son Howard expanded throughout the state when he took over the company in the 1920s. His son, Charles, is the majority shareholder and currently runs the company, which has 400 stores in Texas and Mexico and generates $25 billion in annual sales. Charles' siblings and two nephews also have stakes in the business.

24. The Stryker family

Net worth: $11.1 billion

Source of wealth: Stryker Corp.

Homer Stryker founded medical-equipment company Stryker Corp. His grandchildren — siblings Pat, Jon, and Ronda — each inherited a stake in the company, which generated $12 billion in sales in 2017. Ronda is the only sibling to serve on the board. All three are philanthropists and have donated at least $855 million collectively to various causes and foundations.

23. The Mellon family

Net worth: $11.5 billion

Source of wealth: Mellon Bank

The Mellon family fortune originated when Thomas Mellon invested in coal and real estate in the 1860s — he was so successful he used the investment money to found Mellon Bank. He left his fortune to his children to grow. Between his direct descendants and future generations, they did just that, investing in companies that later became ALOCOA and Gulf Oil (now Chevron) and owning companies in media and the railroad industry.

Matthew Mellon was the face of the family until his untimely death in April 2018.

22. The Marshall family

Net worth: $12 billion

Source of wealth: Investments

The Marshall family's wealth is diversified. J. Howard Marshall II traded his Great Northern Oil Company shares for an estimated 15% stake in the Koch Industries. He passed on the stock to his son, E. Pierce Marshall, which then went to his wife and children when he died. The family has spent millions of their fortune on lawyers for J. Howard II, who had a short-term marriage to Anna Nicole Smith.

21. The Brown family

Net worth: $12.3 billion

Source of wealth: Brown-Forman Corp.

The Brown family is behind Jack Daniel's, Woodford Reserve, and Old Forester, among other alcohol brands. An estimated 25 family members own more than half of Brown-Forman Corp., which began with pharmaceuticals salesman George Garvin Brown in 1870.

20. The Sackler family

Net worth: $13 billion

Source of wealth: Purdue Pharma

The Sackler brothers — Arthur, Mortimer, and Raymond — founded Purdue Pharma in the 1950s. The business skyrocketed when it began selling OxyContin in 1995. By 2002, Purdue was generating $1.6 billion worth of the painkiller.

The company has spent hundreds of millions settling various lawsuits over mis-branding OxyContin and generates $3 billion in annual sales today. The Sackler family still completely owns the company and the fortune is shared among some 20 family members.

19. The Goldman family

Net worth: $13.2 billion

Source of wealth: Solil Management

The Goldman family's wealth comes from real estate — they own 400-plus properties in New York City, including a 17% stake in the World Trade Center developments. Sol Goldman began Solil Management when he began buying foreclosed properties at bargain prices in the 1950s.

Today, his daughter Jane Goldman, runs the company. She and her siblings own 25% of the company, with assets worth an estimated $12 billion. Sol's nephew Lloyd Goldman runs the family's real estate firm, BLDG Management, which has another 17% stake in the World Trade Center.

18. The Bass family

Net worth: $13.3 billion

Source of wealth: Oil

In 1959, the oil tycoon Sid Richardson left his nephews Robert, Sid, Lee, and Edward $2.8 million each. They then diversified the money. The four brothers received $5.6 billion in stock after selling their oil company to ExxonMobil in 2017. They could reap payouts worth up to $1 billion.

17. The Busch family

Net worth: $13.4 billion

Source of wealth: Anheuser-Busch

The Busch family fortune's roots in beer date back to 1876 when Adolphus Busch created what is now known today as Budweiser. While the company passed through each family generation, an estimated 25% of the business was sold between 1989 and 2008, and it was fully bought out for $52 billion in 2008.

Part of the family launched back into the business with William K Busch Brewing. Roughly 30 members of the family split the fortune.

16. The Hunt family

Net worth: $13.7 billion

Source of wealth: Hunt Oil Company

H.L. Hunt laid the foundation for his family's fortune with Hunt Oil Company. His many heirs (he had 14 children) command several fortunes, from Hunt Oil and Petro-Hunt to Rosewood Hotels & Resorts. His children spend their billions on real estate, like the 6-million-square-foot underground business park SubTropolis, and sports teams — they own the Kansas City Chiefs and have a minority stake in the Chicago Bulls.

15. The du Pont family

Net worth: $14.3 billion

Source of wealth: DuPont

The du Pont fortune is one of the oldest and most widely shared fortunes on this list. Chemicals giant DuPont was founded in 1802 as a gunpowder manufacturer. Over time, it evolved into producing everything from dynamite to plastics and invented nylon and Teflon. About 3,500 family members share the chunk of substantial shares in the company, although none actually run the company.

14. The Ziff family

Net worth: $14.4 billion

Source of wealth: Ziff Davis Inc.

William Ziff Jr. sold the magazine publisher his father created, Ziff Davis Inc., which published PC Magazine, for $1.4 billion in 1994. His sons, Daniel, Robert, and Dirk, grow their inheritance through Ziff Brothers Investments and reportedly invest some of their billions with managers who use to work at their hedge funds.

vrai and oro 14

  • Vrai & Oro comes up in every jewelry shopper's search for alternative and affordable fine jewelry sites
  • What makes shoppers stay and stick with the company boils down to these factors: beautiful styles, high quality, transparency, and customizability.

For a jewelry company that stands by the values of quality, simplicity, and transparency, Vrai & Oro, which translates to "truth" (French) and "gold" (Spanish), couldn't be a more appropriate name.

Founded in 2014, Vrai & Oro is where you can find simple, timeless, and beautiful fine jewelry — no vermeil, only 14-karat and 18-karat gold here — at a better price and through a less stressful shopping process than traditional fine jewelry retailers.

Its story has only become more interesting in the last two years. It was acquired by Diamond Foundry, a company that grows above-ground diamonds using 100% solar energy, and it launched an engagement collection, which also includes a Design Your Own Ring feature.

vrai and oro 15

All of its pieces are designed and manufactured in downtown Los Angeles, with its Diamond Foundry diamonds traveling south from San Francisco. This unique localization and amount of control over the entire process allows Vrai & Oro to ensure ethical labor practices, maintain quality standards, and keep prices low.

Vrai & Oro is part of a growing movement of online jewelry startups that want to do things differently and are rewarded with loyal fan bases.

The decision to partner with Diamond Foundry, for example, was a no-brainer because of founder Vanessa Stofenmacher's desire to bring change to the industry and highlight the availability of high-quality diamonds unmarked by social and environmental issues.

vrai and oro 16

Meanwhile, Vrai & Oro Weddings (VOW) and the custom design studio give newfound power to the shopper. If you don't want to go with the crowd and stand anxiously inside a jewelry store, you can instead shop stunning options online with no pressure. You're not even missing out on the physical experience of trying on rings because Vrai & Oro will send you three ring samples through its Home Try On program.

If you don't see a combination you like, that's fine, too, because the design studio lets you choose every ring feature imaginable: the setting, prong, band width, metal type, polish, engraving, diamond type, and more. There are over 3,500 style combinations possible and each ring is made to order.

vrai & oro

Since Vrai & Oro's jewelry follows a minimalist and dainty aesthetic, you'll be hard-pressed to find something you can't see yourself wearing at your most dressed up or laid back.

Plain gold bands start at just $55, and most bracelets and necklaces are $200 to $300. More luxurious pieces aren't out of the picture: the brand's gleaming Round-Brilliant Diamond Necklace is $3,290 and Baguette Diamond Tennis Bracelet is $5,890.

Don't buy a new iPhone right now (AAPL)

  • Apple is expected to unveil three new iPhones in September, meaning the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR will soon be considered previous-generation.
  • The company will also likely reduce the price of older models once it releases its 2019 iPhones.
  • As such, those looking to purchase a new iPhone should probably hold off on upgrading.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

If you're a loyal iPhone user looking to upgrade, here's some advice: don't. At least not right now.

If history repeats itself in 2019, Apple is on the verge of releasing its next-generation iPhone in September, as it's done every year since 2012.

Read more: Apple's first 5G iPhone is coming next year — here's everything we've heard about it so far

The new iPhone is expected to come in three variants, once again following the pattern Apple established in 2017 with the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X. The biggest changes are said to be the phone's new triple-lens camera, which could enable the iPhone to capture photos with a wider field of view, according to Bloomberg

This new camera setup would likely debut on the company's more expensive new iPhones — the successors to the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max — while the iPhone XR follow-up will likely have two cameras, the report also said.

Otherwise, the new iPhones are expected to support reverse-wireless charging — a feature that makes it possible to charge other devices by resting them on the back of the iPhone — and will likely come with an updated processor. The iPhone XR sequel will also reportedly come in new colors, as leaks from Macotakara and Bloomberg's Mark Gurman have indicated.

Maybe you don't care about having the latest iPhone, or perhaps the upgrades coming in the next version don't sound that compelling to you. But you're still in the market for a new iPhone because the one you're currently using is nearly three years old.

If that's the case, you might want to opt for one the older (and less expensive) iPhones that Apple already sells.

Even so, you should still wait. Apple is likely to cut the prices of its current iPhones and possibly older versions once it unveils the new models. Last year, for example, it reduced the cost of its iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 down to $449 and $599 respectively when it debuted the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR.

Regardless, if you can hold out for another month and a half or so, you'll have many more options at your disposal. You'll be able to gauge whether Apple's 2019 iPhones are the right option for you, and if they're not you can probably get the iPhone XS or iPhone XR at a cheaper price.

How to delete 'Windows.old' — the folder keeping your old version of Windows — to free up more than 20 GB of space on your PC

huawei mbxp windows 10

  • If you've recently upgraded your version of Windows, you might want to delete your "Windows.old" folder, the folder containing your old version of Windows.
  • Your Windows.old folder can consume more than 20 GB of storage space on your PC.
  • While you can't delete this folder in the usual way (by pressing the Delete key), you can delete it using the Disk Cleanup program built into Windows.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

You might have noticed a folder on your computer called "Windows.old."

If you did, you probably also noticed two other things: It is using a lot of hard drive space (potentially as much as two dozen gigabytes) and you can't delete it using your keyboard's Delete key.

Since it has "old" in its filename, it seems unnecessary – is there a way to get rid of it?

Yes, you can.

If you've recently upgraded to a new version of Windows, the Windows.old folder contains your previous installation of Windows, which can be used to roll back to the previous configuration if you want to.

If you don't plan to go back – and few people do – you can remove it and reclaim the space.

Also, keep in mind that if you do nothing, Windows will automatically discard that folder 30 days after the upgrade. But if you want to delete it right now, here is how.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Windows 10 Home (From $139 at Best Buy)

How to delete the Windows.old folder on your computer

1. In the Start menu search box, type "cleanup" and then click "Disk Cleanup" in the results.

2. If you see the Drive Selection dialog box, make sure that the C: drive is selected, and click "OK."

3. Click "Clean up system files."

4. You may need to choose drive C: a second time and click "OK." Then you'll need to wait while the program scans your drive.

5. Select the checkbox for "Previous Windows installations" from the list of files to delete.

15 cool startups you didn’t know were on Amazon

Screen Shot 2019 07 31 at 3.06.34 PM

  • For a long time, if you wanted to find your favorite startup anywhere outside of its own website, you were out of luck.
  • Slowly, they're beginning to join online retailers like Target and Nordstrom to make it easier for you to find and shop their innovative products.
  • Amazon is another popular choice. It's the most far-reaching and convenient platform for you to buy nearly anything you want.
  • So if cool new mattresses, bedding and bath products, clothing, and accessories are on your list, go ahead and shop the following 15 startups on Amazon.

In the world of online retail in the US, you can't get any bigger than Amazon

As startups begin to look beyond their own websites and diversify their selling options, some choose Target as their main traditional retailer, while others flock to Nordstrom, all in hopes of attracting a very specific type of customer.

But the pure reach, convenience, and customer service army of Amazon make it the obvious choice for many startups. Some companies, like Casper, are actually available on all three shopping sites, in addition to its own, an aggressive strategy that surely improves its brand exposure.

Starting off on Amazon is a great stepping stone to more exposure and customers because the majority of online shoppers are already on Amazon. If they can shop interesting new products alongside the familiar brands and supplies they're buying anyway, they will.

It also helps that most of these startup products are available with Prime shipping, allowing them to bypass slower shipping speeds offered elsewhere.

If you need to update your personal care routine, mattress, or closet, these 15 startups on Amazon have you covered.

I tried the $230 BlanQuil Chill, a cooling weighted blanket — it's worth the price for hot sleepers like me

Blanquill chill

  • I need the weight of blankets to fall asleep, but I often wake up sweaty in the middle of the night. The BlanQuil Chill Cooling Weighted Blanket has allowed me to strike a balance and sleep comfortably.
  • The BlanQuil Chill uses eco-friendly glass micro-beads for weight and cutting-edge cooling fabric that absorbs body heat.
  • At $229.95, the price may seem steep, but it solves such a unique problem that I found it to be worth it.

I love sleep. But sleep doesn't always come easily for me. I sleep hot, and I often wake up sweaty and uncomfortable in the middle of the night. Other people may just throw the blankets off to get some relief from the heat, but it's not so simple for me. I can't sleep at all without piles and piles of blankets. The weight and warmth helps me settle in, so I started looking into weighted blankets to see if I could mimic that feeling without all the bulk. My editor gave me the chance to try this cool-to-the-touch weighted blanket from BlanQuil, and now I can't sleep without it.

Weighted blankets have garnered a reputation as an invaluable sleep aid for those who struggle with insomnia. Many with sensory processing disorders, ADHD, and autism also swear by weighted blankets as a tool to feel grounded, safe, and comfortable as they fall asleep.

As someone who has anxiety, my mind will often race at night, and I'll end up tossing and turning for ages and having lots of restless nights. So even in the dead of summer, I've got sheets, blankets, and quilts galore, and I wrap myself up like a burrito. The combination of these two factors make getting a good night's sleep difficult in the warmer months, but the weighted BlanQuil Chill has been a godsend, allowing me to fall asleep quicker and stay cooler throughout the night.

Weighted blankets are often filled with plastic pellets, chains, or another heavy material — BlanQuil uses eco-friendly glass micro-beads. The calming cocoon effect they create is thanks to something called deep pressure stimulation. It essentially feels like a full-body hug, and causes the brain to release of serotonin and dopamine, two neurotransmitters that help us feel relaxed, calm, and happy. Some research suggests deep pressure touch can also activate the brain's limbic system, which helps us process emotions and fear. Basically, there's a ton of science that says feeling like you're being given a gentle hug is really good for you.

The BlanQuil Chill combines BlanQuil's outstanding reputation for weighted blankets with a cooling cover that wicks away sweat and moisture and absorbs body heat. How the cooling fabric works remains a bit of a mystery to me, but there's no doubt it feels surprisingly cool to the touch. My partner sleeps with one leg outside of the covers, and she appreciates how refreshing the surface of the BlanQuil is against her leg when she's feeling too warm, kind of like holding an ice cube to your neck when you've come back from a run. Plus, the cover is  completely removable and washable, so you don't have to worry about spills or sweat buildup.

BlanQuil offers a 15-pound and a 20-pound version — they suggest going for one that's between 8-15% of your body weight.

I've been sleeping with the 15-pound one for the past six months, and I've noticed a huge difference in my quality of sleep. I fall asleep faster, I toss and turn less, and most importantly, I'm less sweaty when I wake up in the morning.

Blanquill Chill 3

In the winter months, the cooling fabric was actually a bit too strong, and I had to use it on top of my existing blankets otherwise it felt too cold against my skin. But in the summer, I've found it to be most effective just on top of my top sheet. (Yes, I'm one of the few millennials that still uses a top sheet.) I've found the BlanQuil actually stays cooler this way, since it's not in direct contact with my skin, sucking up all my body heat until it's no longer effective.

After a while, the chilling fabric will adjust to your body temperature, so it works best in combination with some kind of fan or air conditioning circulating the air in the room to keep it refreshed.

It reminds me of how you have to hold something glow in the dark up to a bright light to "charge" it. The coolness needs to be "charged," otherwise you could end up a bit sweaty once you fall asleep.

The one downside is that it tends to slip off the bed if you toss and turn in the middle of the night. The cooling fabric has a wonderfully silky texture, but that causes it to have no real grip on the sheets, and once it starts to fall off the bed, the weight of the blanket takes it down. If you're a hot sleeper who doesn't rely on the weight to stay asleep, this may actually be a blessing in disguise freeing you from the blanket once it starts to warm up from your body heat.

BlanQuil also sells their Micro-Plush covers separately for $99, allowing you to turn your BlanQuil Chill into a warm, cozy, and velvety weighted blanket in the winter months. And, this may even solve the slipping-off-the-bed dilemma.

The bottom line

The blanket is pricey at $229.95, butmost weighted blankets are. The cooling capacity of this one makes it worth the price for hot sleepers who need some nighttime relief.

supplies

  • Sending your kid off to college is nerve wracking.
  • The best you can do is impart a few life lessons and outfit your kid's dorm room with all the essentials.
  • We've rounded up everything your kid needs for their dorm room from bedding and decor to tech and small appliances.

Chances are your college kid hasn't lived on their own — ever. The thought of sending your kid off to fend for themselves against dirty laundry, piles of dishes, and the other inconveniences of adulthood probably sounds crazy to you, but they've got to learn somehow.

The college dorm is a good training ground for new adults, assuming they've got all the essentials.  We've rounded up everything your college kid needs to have in their dorm room, including everything for their bed, bathroom, kitchen, and more.

Before we get into our picks, here are some tips on what to buy:

  • Know your dorm: How many roommates will you have? How much space is there? Do you even have a kitchen? Adjust accordingly.
  • Talk to your roommates: If you talk to your roommate(s) before you shop, you can coordinate and figure out who's bringing what. My first roommates brought a mini fridge, a microwave, and a TV. All I brought was a suitcase and a duffle bag. It was a pretty good deal.
  • Don't go overboard: Trust me, you don't need all those random things you think you'll need. The more stuff you buy, the more you have to carry back and forth for the next four years.

Living in a dorm is a crazy experience, but so long as you have the essentials, you'll be just fine. Read on to find our top picks for every dorm essential you can imagine.

The Coop Home Goods Premium Adjustable Shredded Memory Foam Pillow is great for any sleeping position.

The Coop Home Goods Premium Adjustable Shredded Memory Foam Pillow is not cheap, but it is the very best pillow you can buy — period. It's our top pick for the best pillow overall because it's adjustable, suits all kinds of sleeping styles, and it's relatively affordable. College beds are horrible. If you don't put a mattress topper down, you'll never sleep. Luckily, you can get a great one that doesn't look like an egg carton for less than $100. The Dreamfoam Bedding mattress pad is our top pick for a mattress topper because it adds softness and comfort to any mattress without breaking the bank.

The best eye mask

The Nidra Deep Rest Eye Mask will block out your roommate's light so you can sleep.

The Nidra Deep Rest Eye Mask is among the things I should have bought for college. The eye mask will block out your roommate's light during their 2 a.m. study cramming session and it'll also block out other unwanted sights (co-ed dorms, am I right?). The Wirecutter says this mask is as soft and effective as they come, and it's not too pricey.

The best mini desk fan

The Genesis Convertible Table-Top Clip fan is small, portable, and easy to attach to your bed.

Most clip-on products carry a stigma of geekdom with them. Clip-on necktie? Geeky. Sunglasses that clip over your prescription glasses? Really geeky. Clip-on electric fan? It may look geeky, but the Avalon Convertible Table-Top and Clip Fan works so well that you'll put up with any sarcastic comments sent your way. Plus, you have the option of reconfiguring your Avalon fan to make it a small table top fan with a base, no clip required. It's our top pick for a personal electric fan.

The best alarm clock

The Electrohome Projection Alarm Clock projects the time onto the ceiling, gives you the temperature, automatically sets itself, and wakes you up.

Waking up might be a little bit more pleasant when you can choose between a buzzer, the radio, or your favorite songs streaming from your smartphone to nudge you out of dreamland. Add to that the fun of seeing the time of day (or night) projected in large, red numerals onto your ceiling and the large LCD display on the clock's face, and you have just some of the features that make the Electrohome Projection Alarm Clock our top pick.
