Rothy’s and Everlane both use recycled plastic to make comfortable women’s flats — here's how they compare in comfort, style, and price

Rothy's vs. Everlane 4x3

  • Rothy's and Everlane are two popular brands that offer knit flats.
  • They're both made from recycled plastic bottles and are comfortable, breathable, and stylish. But they differ in feel, color options, and price (Rothy's are $125-$145, while Everlane's are $98).
  • If you don't want to spend more than $100, are okay with fewer color options, and prefer a thicker, more structured feel, get a pair of Everlane Day Glove ReKnit flats.
  • If you like shopping many different colors and patterns, want a low-maintenance shoe you can easily wash, and are looking for more flexibility and give, get a pair of Rothy's flats.

Recently, online clothing retailer Everlane released a knit iteration of its popular Day Glove flat. The women on the Insider Picks team reacted accordingly: by exploding with excitement and immediately slipping on the stylish, lightweight shoes the moment we received the boxes.

Although brands like Everlane and Allbirds have all realized by now that a lot of women love wearing flats, the original startup that made a name of its flats is, of course, Rothy's

With its sleek silhouettes and distinctive blue trim, Rothy's can be seen in cities all over the country, from the hills of San Francisco to the subway cars of New York City. As you consider a new pair of flats to replace your scuffed up, worn down pair, it's probably top of mind in your list of options. However, newcomers like Everlane also look pretty enticing.

If you're stuck between Rothy's and Everlane, we've broken them down by a few factors (color and style options, fabric construction, feel, and price) so you can determine which one is best for your use and budget.

Our team really likes both, so we can't give a conclusive answer on which is better — it all depends on your specific preferences. For a few more women's flats options to consider, check out our guide to the best flats you can buy.

Read our full review of Rothy's flats here.

Read our full review of the Everlane Day Glove ReKnit flats here.

Read on for a direct comparison between Rothy's and Everlane flats, below.

What they're made of

What's really cool about both of these flats is that they're made from recycled plastic bottles. Using these unexpected materials has resulted in surprisingly flexible and comfortable shoes that you would never guess contained recycled materials.

Rothy's

The knit upper of Rothy's flats is made from recycled plastic bottles specifically, though the company doesn't specify how many. The outsole is made from carbon-free rubber, while the insole is made from caster oil and recycled materials. Converting recycled bottles into something beautiful has been Rothy's intent from its inception in 2016. As of June 2019, it has repurposed more than 32 million bottles.

Everlane

The knit upper and outsole of the Everlane Day Glove ReKnit flats are made from eight recycled plastic bottles, while the insole is made from Italian leather. Everlane has committed to eliminating new plastic from its supply chain by 2021. In late 2018, it kicked off this initiative with its ReNew collection of outerwear and in 2019 it launched a sustainable leather sneaker brand called Tread, proving that every part of your wardrobe can be responsibly made.

What it's like to wear and maintain them

How different can two knit flats be? There actually is a distinct difference between the feel, as well as the maintenance, of Everlane's and Rothy's flats.

Rothy's

Rothy's knit material is thinner and slightly tighter-woven, and the 3D knitting process that produces it results in a less noticeable pattern. Rothy's round-toe flats have some more give and flexibility, so they could be ideal for wide feet. The pointy-toe version is best for narrow feet. Since the insole is also made from recycled materials rather than something like leather, it feels drier and slightly more breathable, and it won't stick to the bottom of your feet. If you tend to have sweaty feet, Rothy's might be better for you. They're easy to clean — just take out the insoles to hand-wash and throw the shoes themselves in the cold wash cycle of your washing machine.

Everlane

The Everlane Day Glove ReKnit knit material is thicker and fashioned into a rib pattern. The flat also has a thicker, more defined "collar" that hugs onto your foot. The cushioned leather insole is buttery soft, smooth, and flexible, providing all-day comfort reminiscent of the original Day Glove. Together, these components make a lightweight, breathable shoe that you can wear straight out of the box. Due to the leather detailing on this shoe, you can only spot clean it.

What silhouettes and styles each brand offers

Rothy's

Rothy's flats come in two styles. The Flat has a rounded toe and angular opening, while The Point has a pointed toe and an angular opening. Compared to Everlane, Rothy's has many more color and print options, like this leopard print. However, it regularly "retires" colors and prints and introduces new or limited-edition ones, so if you see a style you like, it's better to buy it sooner than later.

Everlane

The Everlane Day Glove ReKnit flats are pretty new, so there are currently only five colors available: black, white, pink, red, and yellow. As a basics brand, Everlane doesn't really do prints, but as it expands its color offerings, you can expect more solid color options. There is one silhouette, which has a rounded toe and rounded opening.

How much you'll pay for them

Based on shoe budget alone, you might have an immediate preference for one brand over the other.

Rothy'sflats are more expensive. The rounded toe flats cost $125 and the pointed toe flats cost $145.

Everlane's Day Glove ReKnit costs $98.

Which flats you should ultimately buy

We own, regularly wear, and love both brand's flats, but the bottom line is this:

If you like shopping many different colors and patterns, want a low-maintenance shoe you can easily wash, and desire more flexibility and give, get a pair of Rothy's flats.

If you don't want to spend more than $100, are okay with basic colors, and prefer a thicker, more structured feel, get a pair of Everlane Day Glove ReKnit flats.

11 incredibly useful Google Maps features everyone should know about

Google Maps

Google Maps has become so pervasive and useful since its launch in 2005 that it's almost impossible to remember how we got around without it. From seeing how long it takes to get from point A to point B, to scouting out restaurants and points of interest, it's an invaluable resource for navigating neighborhoods both familiar and new.

And, of course, Google Maps has come a long way over its 14-year history.

Here's a look at some of the most useful features in Google's wildly popular navigation app.

Change the time to see the most accurate results.

Google Maps can be very helpful for looking up directions ahead of time, but be sure to change the time window to match when you plan to travel. That makes it possible for Google to serve up the most accurate results based on traffic patterns and other variables.

To do this, tap the "depart at" button near the top of the screen, just below where Google lists the available modes of transportation.

Keep a list of your favorite places.

If you often have a hard time keeping track of your go-to spots, Google Maps can help. Just tap the icon that looks like three stacked vertical lines and choose "your places." From there, tap the "saved" tab, choose "favorites," and press the "add" button to save your favorite brunch restaurant or neighborhood bar.

Use the "commute" tab to see information about your route in just a tap.

The tab makes it easy to see information about your daily drive or train ride to work.

First, make sure Google Maps knows your work address by tapping the icon that looks like three vertical lines in the top left corner of the screen. Then press "your places" to view the home and work addresses you have saved in Google Maps.

Once your work address is up to date, tap the "commute" tab between the "explore" and "for you" buttons near the bottom of the screen to view details about your route.

Download maps for offline use.

If you're driving through a remote area, you might not always have access to reliable internet service. Google allows you to download maps of certain areas so you can view them without a WiFi or data connection.

To do so, search for the area, like a neighborhood (Chicago's Wicker Park) or whole city (Toronto), you'd like to download. Then scroll down to the bottom of the screen to the "directions" button and swipe over to press the "download" button.

If you don't see this option, search for the area, press the vertical-lines icon to launch the menu, and choose "offline maps," then "custom map."

Remember that offline maps are able to provide only driving directions and that traffic information will not be available.

Add a stop to your trip.

Sometimes a trip doesn't always involve driving straight from point A to point B. You may need to pick up a friend, stop for gas, or grab a quick bite to eat along the way. In Google Maps, you can easily add a stop like this to your driving route.

After you've started your trip, tap the area near the bottom of the screen where the estimated time of arrival is displayed. Then press "search along route" and search for your desired stop. You can type in a specific address or a general point of interest, like "restaurants" or "gas stations."

Google will search for places that match your query along your route. When you find the one you'd like to add as a pit stop, just tap it on the map, and Google will add it to your trip.

See what the parking situation will be like at your destination.

Not only can Google Maps help you get from point A to point B — it can also assist you in finding parking once you get there. When searching for driving directions, look for the "P" icon with a circle around it next to the estimated time it will take to get there. This will let you know if parking is usually limited near this location.

See how crowded your train will be.

Google Maps can now tell you how crowded the train will be during your next trip. Just type your destination in the search box, select public transit as the mode of transportation, and tap the route suggestion. You should see an estimate that tells you whether there will be standing room only on the train during that time of day in the route details where the train schedule and list of stops are located.

Book an Uber or Lyft ride.

Google has made switching between its Maps app and apps like Uber and Lyft much simpler and more seamless.

After typing in the address of your destination and pressing the "directions" button, browse the available transportation options and tap the icon that looks like a person waving.

This will pull up a list of on-demand car services in your area and their estimated fares. Choose your desired option and press the "open app" button to summon a car.

Share your location with a friend.

There are times when you may want to let a friend or family member know exactly how long before you arrive. To make it easier to share your estimated time of arrival, use the "share trip progress" feature in Google Maps.

Tap the section near the bottom of the screen where the app shows how long it will take to reach your destination. Then choose "share trip progress." From there, you'll be able to select a contact you'd like to share your location with until you arrive at your destination.

Google will present you a list of suggested contacts, but you can also choose to share your location through a text message or email, among other options.

See if your favorite restaurant is too crowded.

Google Maps can do a lot more than just provide directions. The app can also serve up details on points of interest, such as restaurant descriptions, reviews, photos, and more.

One particularly useful piece of information in Google Maps is the times of day when a location is usually the most crowded.

After searching for a restaurant, bar, or attraction in Maps, tap near the bottom of the screen to launch a full-screen card that provides an overview of the location. Then scroll down to the "popular times" section to view a graph that indicates how crowded that location is likely to be or how long the wait might be during certain times of the day.

Drop a pin to easily show friends where you are.

If you're in a crowded public space, such as a Central Park or a music festival, it can be difficult to describe your precise location. That's where dropping a pin in Google Maps can come in handy.

Just press and hold your finger on the screen to drop a pin at your desired location. Then you can label it and share it with a friend or family member by pressing the buttons toward the bottom of the screen.

Bonus: Use augmented reality to point you in the right direction.

Google wants to use your phone's camera to take the guesswork out of figuring out whether you're walking in the right direction. The company recently rolled out an early version of Google Maps with augmented reality for its line of Pixel devices, designed to make it possible to see visual markers in the real world when you're looking through your camera's viewfinder.

If you're using a Pixel device, look for the augmented-reality button near the bottom of the screen after you've typed in your destination to try this feature.

9 cool features that prove the Google Pixel 3 line of phones are still worth buying, despite the upcoming Pixel 4 launch

Google Pixel

  • No story of Google's Pixel 3 phones would be complete without mentioning their powerful cameras.
  • All the models in the Pixel 3 family, from the Pixel 3a ($299.99) to the Pixel 3 XL ($999.99), feature a 12.2-megapixel dual-pixel rear camera.
  • They also include cool camera features such as Night Sight, which let you take impressively crisp low-lighting shots, and Google Lens, which lets you examine real-life products with your phone.
  • If you're considering a new Pixel 3 phone, these nine camera features might convince you to take the leap.

In the smartphone world, Google has made a name for itself with the Pixel line and its stunning camera quality.

The newest models, the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL, are set to be released soon, but in the meantime, you have plenty of great phones to choose from in the Pixel 3 series. It's made up of four phones, the 3a and 3a XL, the 3, and the 3 XL.

They differ in price, design, size, and battery life, but the one thing they all boast is a 12.2-megapixel dual-pixel rear camera. Along with this powerful camera comes a host of cool photo-shooting features to make you appreciate it even more. Whether you prefer the budget Pixel 3a, which only costs $300, or want to splurge for the Pixel 3XL, which costs around $900, you get to enjoy the same camera features.

If you're thinking about buying a Google Pixel 3 phone for its camera alone, we don't blame you (and you'll be getting a useful overall phone, too). As a Pixel 3 owner myself, I'll show you the camera features below that might convince you to make the upgrade.

Learn more about the best camera features of the Google Pixel 3 series of phones, then shop the different models below.

Photos featured are taken with a Pixel 3 XL and are unedited.

Camera

The camera in "Auto" function is great for everyday picture-taking. It captures colors vibrantly and photos come out crisp and clear. You can turn on the "Motion" feature for live photos, set three- or 10-second timers, adjust the brightness, and use special light modes (sunny, fluorescent, cloudy, etc.). On "Selfie" mode, you can actually zoom out to fit more people into your group selfie.

Portrait

To make your friends and family look like models and trick others into thinking you used a DSLR to take these photos, use Portrait mode. It blurs the background to make faces and bodies in your immediate view ultra-crisp. The nice thing about Google's Portrait mode is that it also gives you the regular, non-portrait version, so you'll have both on hand.

Night Sight

It's hard to believe that nighttime landscapes like the one above were taken with a phone camera. In low lighting conditions, the Pixel's camera shines. Use Night Mode for dim outdoor and indoor scenes, from viewpoints enjoyed at midnight to fancy, Michelin-starred dishes that are usually cloaked in dark mood lighting.

Playground

Playground is an AR feature that lets you drag and drop characters and text, which Google calls "stickers," into the real-time shot. You can install fun, moving characters like Marvel superheroes or dancing foods to add to your scene, then take a photo or video with them. By no means is this feature a must-have, but you'll have a fun time messing around with Playground.

Panorama

No longer do you have to cut off an important part of a gorgeous sweeping landscape thanks to the Panorama feature. Like most camera panorama programs, it doesn't do well when multiple people move within the frame, so you'll need to be careful about when you use it.

Photobooth

Take a series of photobooth-like photos without ever touching the shutter button. On Photobooth mode, the camera detects smiles and other changes of facial expression, as well as changes in lighting and motion, to automatically take photos.

Lens: Product search

If you see a cool product out in the wild and want to find out more about it and even shop it directly, use Google Lens' Search function. Depending on how distinctive the item is, it can detect the exact product or show you similar products. I found that it was less accurate for things like clothing — but pretty good at drawing up many similar options — and more accurate for anything with a logo, like the Hydro Flask mug above.

Lens: Barcode scan

The best way to find the exact product you want is to scan the barcode with Google Lens. This feature comes in handy if you're shopping in real life and want to see if you can get the product for a lower price or more conveniently online.

Lens: Translate

Google Translate goes live with the help of Google Lens. Within seconds, it auto-detects the language and replaces the text with the translated version. If you've ever used Google Translate, you know that it's not perfect, and this is no less true on Google Lens. But you'll get the general gist and glean enough information to understand what's going on.

I ordered the same meal at a McDonald's in Moscow and New York City, and the Russian location was a step up from the American one

mcdonalds moscow

  • The USSR got its first McDonald's in January 1990. On a recent trip to Russia, I visited the fast-food restaurant in Moscow.
  • I found that the Moscow location of the fast-food restaurant was a step up from its counterparts in the US.
  • The ordering process was streamlined, the food tasted fresher and more flavorful, and the space was cleaner.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

On January 31, 1990, more than 30,000 people waited in line in the cold for hours to eat at the very first McDonald's in the USSR.

Now, the American fast-food chain has at least 650 locations throughout the country. McDonald's is thriving in Russia, with the number of restaurants growing 6% last year, as compared to the global average of 1.5%, The Wall Street Journal reported. And most of the restaurants in Russia cook with ingredients that are sourced from local Russian suppliers, according to the Journal.

On a recent trip to Russia, I ate at the first McDonald's to open in Moscow, and it was a step up from the locations I've visited in the US.

Here's what it was like.

DON'T MISS: I walked down Moscow's glitzy, mile-long shopping street that travel guides compare to the Champs-Élysées in Paris and NYC's Fifth Ave — and it fell totally short of the hype

The first McDonald's opened in the USSR in January 1990.

More than 30,000 people waited in line in the cold for hours to be the first to eat at the American fast-food chain. Many of them, The Wall Street Journal reported in 2007, had never tasted burgers and fries before.

Now, there are at least 650 McDonald's throughout Russia and the fast-food chain is thriving in the country.

On a recent trip to Russia, I ate lunch at the country's first McDonald's, which is in Moscow, to see how it stacks up against its counterparts in the US.

Russia's first McDonald's is in central Moscow at Pushkin Square, right off famous Tverskaya Street and steps from the metro.

When I stepped inside, I was surprised by how spacious the fast-food restaurant was.

It also seemed very clean. I didn't see any garbage on the floor or half-eaten food sitting on empty tables.

The McDonald's sprawls over several levels.

At 2,500 square meters, or about 26,909 square feet, Moscow's first McDonald's was one of the largest ever built when it opened in 1990.

Some people were ordering in person at the counters.

But the location also had at least eight double-sided ordering kiosks.

Many of the customers appeared to be young people and teens.

I can't read the Cyrillic alphabet, so the main menu behind the counter wasn't particularly helpful to me.

I did see illustrated items like coffee, tea, smoothies, McFlurries, and donuts.

I made my way over to an ordering kiosk and was relieved to see it could be operated in English and several other languages.

I don't read or speak any Russian.

I browsed through the menu to see what a Russian McDonald's might have that a US location wouldn't.

I was secretly hoping to see some menu items made with stereotypical Russian foods, like a caviar burger or vodka-spiked McFlurries.

Instead, I was surprised to see a "Tastes of Italy" section that I've never seen in the US, which included a Tuscan panini, an "Italian Pie" that resembled a Hot Pocket, and something called a Mojito Italiano. McDonald's in Russia doesn't sell alcohol as it does in some countries like France, Germany, and South Korea.

The Moscow McDonald's had more seafood options than I was expecting.

In addition to the classic Filet-O-Fish sandwich, the menu included fried shrimp, a shrimp roll, and a fish roll.

When I got back to the US, I popped into a McDonald's across the street from my office in New York City and saw that it offered only the Filet-O-Fish, no shrimp or fish rolls.

Ultimately, I decided to go with a classic: the Big Mac.

With fries and a Coke, of course.

I reviewed my order: a Big Mac McCombo, fries with sweet sauce (I'm not a fan of Ketchup), and a Coke. The total came out to 204 rubles, or about $3.22.

At the McDonald's across the street from my office in New York, the same meal cost $9.79.

After I paid with my credit card at the kiosk, the machine printed out my receipt, which had the number 857 on it.

I went to look for the pick-up spot.

I spotted a screen toward the end of the counter that was displaying order numbers.

I walked up to the counter and saw that my order was ready before my number was even displayed — less than a minute after I'd paid for it.

I was impressed by the speed and efficiency of the whole process, as I'm used to a more hectic scene in American McDonald's locations. The contrast was even more clear after I visited the McDonald's by my office, where there are no ordering kiosks and an employee had to direct the customers to the next available cashier.

I headed up to the second level of the restaurant, where there were plenty of seats to choose from.

The first thing I ate was a French fry, which was piping hot and perfectly salty.

I wasn't too impressed by the look of the Big Mac when I first opened it.

But upon biting into it, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was hot, flavorful, and more fresh-tasting than a typical Big Mac. At McDonald's locations in the US, I enjoy the fries, but I usually find the burgers to be a bit tasteless.

The Russian Big Mac seemed to have the same ingredients as its American counterpart— two beef patties, American cheese, lettuce, onions, pickles, and the signature Big Mac sauce — but it just tasted better

Like in the US, the Moscow McDonald's offered free WiFi.

In Russia, you connect to WiFi by requesting a code, which is texted to your phone and which you then have to enter to use the network.

As I was eating, I looked around and was again struck by how clean the McDonald's was, despite the high number of customers.

In many US McDonald's locations I've been to, especially the larger ones, you often have to move aside discarded trays with food remains and wipe up smears of Ketchup before sitting down at a table.

But in Moscow, I saw an employee come over and clear away a man's tray mere seconds after he'd finished eating.

I didn't take a photo in the bathrooms, but I will say that, too, they were noticeably clean and didn't require a code to enter like in some American locations do.

Attached to the McDonald's was a McCafé with its own separate entrance.

It was a hot day, and many people were buying ice cream. The café also sells coffee drinks and baked goods.

Outside, Moscow's first McDonald's has a spacious seating area.

It, too, was clean and well-maintained.

The outdoor seating area overlooks a beautiful little park across the street with trees, flowers, and a fountain.

From this McDonald's, it's about a 30-minute walk or a 15-minute metro ride to Red Square.

In the US, I tend to avoid eating at McDonald's because it's usually a bit hectic, not too clean, and I don't find the food particularly tasty.

But in Moscow, the food, the ordering process, and the space in general were all at a higher level than I'm used to at American McDonald's. In short, I would definitely eat there again.

4 sites that helped me save a ton on the cost of Kindle eBooks

Kindle

  • We love Kindle ebook readers for making reading infinitely more convenient, accessible, and comfortable.
  • The costs of ebooks, however, can add up.
  • If you don't want to spend a lot of money on ebooks or would rather borrow them, these 4 sites and programs can cut down on costs and let you enjoy your reading habit without worrying about financials.

The Kindle Paperwhite is one of the best purchases I've made recently because it makes reading so much more convenient and accessible. I wind down at night with a good book instead of scrolling mindlessly through social media, and I see long commutes as an opportunity rather than an annoyance.

When I first got my Kindle, I was under the impression that all ebooks were cheap, and while they're certainly more affordable than a paperback or hardcover book, some still go for up to $15.

If you're an avid reader with an ever-expanding library, these costs can add up quickly. And if you're like me and hesitate to spend that much on a book that you're not sure you'll enjoy or want to keep forever, then you might also feel stuck. I set out to figure out how to access more books without the financial burden and discovered options that ensure I'll never have to pay full-price for an ebook again.

Whether you're looking to cut down on costs or are more of a book borrower than a book owner, these five sites and subscriptions will help you maximize your book consumption for less money and commitment.

OverDrive

How it works: If you have a public library card (which you should because it's free and easy to sign up for!), OverDrive is invaluable. Find your local library, sign in with your library card number, then browse all the ebook and audiobooks your library has to offer by subject, language, and keywords.

You can also place holds on titles and add books to a wish list. After you click "Borrow," you'll be directed to your Amazon account to download the title to your Kindle device. Once the loan period expires, the book will automatically be deleted from your account. I was very excited to discover OverDrive because it offers all the options and affordability of a library, without the inconvenience of visiting a physical location.

How it works: Scribd is Insider Picks reporter Mara Leighton's all-time favorite reading app and it's not difficult to see why: for only $8.99 a month, you get truly unlimited access to hundreds of thousands of ebooks, audiobooks, magazines, and documents.

Since it lives on your phone and you don't need to buy another device, Scribd makes consuming books easier than ever. You can also download books for offline reading, so not having service won't be a problem.

How it works: With Kindle Unlimited, you get access to over one million titles, including audiobooks and the latest issues of popular magazines. You can have up to 10 Kindle Unlimited titles in your library at one time, so you can keep a rotating selection of old favorites and new discoveries.

I've used Kindle Unlimited to finally read the books I've been meaning to for years, like "The Handmaid's Tale" and "Interpreter of Maladies," and I've been able to revisit childhood classics like the "Harry Potter" series.

Meet Bernie Marcus, the 90-year-old billionaire founder of Home Depot, who is a major Trump donor and plans on giving most of his $5.9 billion fortune away

Bernie Marcus home depot

Bernie Marcus cofounded Home Depot in 1978 after he was fired from his job at a home improvement business, according to Forbes.

Today, Marcus is known as one of the most influential philanthropists in the southern US. Marcus and his wife Billi funded the opening of the Georgia Aquarium, an autism center and Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Marcus was also one of Trump's largest donors in 2016, giving $7 million to Trump's campaign through outside groups, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

In July 2019, Marcus told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he would continue to financially support President Trump's campaign. As Business Insider previously reported, the news sparked outrage among many Home Depot customers, some of whom said they were boycotting the store and cutting up their credit cards in reaction to the announcement.

Marcus didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

Bernard Marcus, 90, grew up in Newark, New Jersey.

Marcus was born May 1, 1929 to Jewish immigrants from Russia, according to Bloomberg. Marcus' father worked as a cabinet maker, but the family was poor.

Marcus attended Rutgers University and graduated with a degree in pharmacy studies in 1954, according to Bloomberg. He worked at two pharmaceutical companies, a local chain of discount stores, and a manufacturing company before entering the home improvement business as the chairman of Handy Dan Home Improvement Centers.

Handy Dan fired Marcus and his future business partner Arthur Blank during a corporate restructuring in 1978.

Marcus and Blank decided to launch a new chain of hardware stores to compete with Handy Dan, starting with two stores in Atlanta, according to Bloomberg. Handy Dan later went out of business, according to The New York Times.

The first Home Depots opened on June 22, 1979, according to the retailer's website. The stores were 60,000 square feet and had a much wider selection of products than traditional hardware stores.

Home Depot was not an immediate success.

The pair lost half the money they invested in the store during the first year it was open, according to Bloomberg. Marcus and Blank even had their children stand outside the store offering $1 bills to any passerby willing to take a look inside, Forbes reports.

Home Depot is now the world's largest home improvement retailer with over 2,200 stores in North America, according to its website. The company also said on its website that its revenue exceeded $108 billion in 2018.

Home Depot went public in 1981.

Marcus, Blank, and early investor Kenneth Langone all became billionaires due to the company's success, according to Forbes.

Marcus now has a net worth of $5.9 billion, Forbes estimates. Blank is worth $5 billion, according to Forbes, and Langone's net worth stands at $3.7 billion.

Marcus served as the chairman of Home Depot's board until he retired in 2002, according to Bloomberg.

Marcus now lives in Boca Raton, Florida, with his wife, Billi.

Marcus has three children, according to Bloomberg: He has two children from his first marriage and a stepson with Billi.

The Marcuses are noted philanthropists.

The couple signed The Giving Pledge in 2010, committing to give away the majority of their fortune.

"It has always been my belief that leaving enormous wealth for our children does nothing to stimulate their ability to make it on their own," the couple wrote in a letter on The Giving Pledge's website. "I too believe that all our efforts in creating the wealth that we have would give us a great deal more joy if we were to disperse as much of it during our lifetimes."

Marcus also donated $250 million to build the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, according to Forbes. It is the largest aquarium in the United States, according to its website.

Marcus is also a major political donor.

Marcus donated $7 million to Trump's 2016 campaign, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. During the 2018 midterm election, Marcus gave $7.9 million to outside groups including a super PAC run by National Security Advisor John Bolton, according to Forbes.

Marcus sparked a boycott of Home Depot in July 2019 after telling the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he would once again financially support the president in 2020.

Marcus responded to the boycott in a Facebook post.

"It saddens me that our country has come to this, where I, as a private citizen, cannot express my feelings," Marcus wrote. "It angers me and it saddens me, but it sure as hell is not going to stop me. If you thought it would, you've got the wrong guy."

Trump also came to Marcus's defense, praising Marcus as " truly great, patriotic & charitable man" and calling the boycotters "vicious and totally crazed" on Twitter 0n July 9, Business Insider reported.

11 things people decide within seconds of meeting you

0

first date

  • People make assumptions about your personality based on a quick scan of your clothes and general appearance.
  • They also make inferences on how successful you are based on what you're wearing, and how aggressive you are based on the shape of your face.
  • Here are 11 things people decide within seconds of meeting you.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Psychologists call it "thin slicing."

Within moments of meeting you, people decide all sorts of things about you, from status to intelligence to conscientiousness.

Career experts say it takes just three seconds for someone to determine whether they like you and want to do business with you.

Fortunately, you have some control over the way others see you. For example, wearing tailored clothes and looking your conversation partner in the eye will generally create a more positive impression. But as for how aggressive you seem? That's largely determined by your facial structure.

Here, we've rounded up 11 assumptions people make about you — sometimes accurate and sometimes less so — based on first impressions. Read on to find out what signals you might be giving off.

Drake Baer and Yu Han contributed reporting on a previous version of this article.

SEE ALSO: How to make people like you in 4 seconds or less

People judge how much they should trust another person after only just meeting them.

People may decide on your trustworthiness in as little as a tenth of a second.

Princeton researchers found this out by giving one group of 245 university students 100 milliseconds to rate the attractiveness, competence, likability, aggressiveness, and trustworthiness of actors' faces.

One hundred and twenty-eight members of another group were able to take as long as they wanted. Results showed that ratings of trustworthiness were highly similar between the two groups — even more similar than ratings of attractiveness — suggesting that we figure out almost instantaneously if we can trust someone.

People also judge your socioeconomic status just by looking at you.

A small Dutch study found that people wearing name-brand clothes — Lacoste and Tommy Hilfiger, to be precise — were seen as higher status and wealthier than folks wearing nondesigner clothes when they approached 80 shoppers in a mall.

"Perceptions did not differ on any of the other dimensions that might affect the outcome of social interactions," the authors wrote. "There were no differences in perceived attractiveness, kindness, and trustworthiness."

Just status and wealth.

People determine how smart they think you are after just meeting you.

2007 study led by Nora A. Murphy, a professor at Loyola Marymount University, found that looking your conversation partner in the eye might help encourage people to see you as more intelligent.

For the study, 182 college students were asked to discuss an assigned topic in pairs for five minutes. Partners then rated each other on how smart they seemed. Results showed that people were perceived as more intelligent when they held their partner's gaze while talking.

"Looking while speaking was a key behavior," she wrote.

Wearing thick glasses and speaking expressively could help, too.

Your appearance can also signal how dominant people think you are.

Bald isn't just beautiful, it's powerful.

In a small University of Pennsylvania experiment, undergrads looked at 25 photos of men, some with shaved heads and others with full heads of hair. The students rated men with shaved heads as more dominant.

Two larger follow-up experiments with 344 and 552 adults, respectively, had similar results. Participants tended to rate bald men — those who'd had their hair either digitally removed or those with shaved heads — as more dominant.

Importantly, researchers found that it was specifically shaved heads that people seemed to associate with dominance — not just the lack of hair. So if it's starting to go, you might want to shave it.

If you want to look successful, get your clothes tailored.

A British-Turkish study of 274 people had them look at faceless photos of men in tailored vs. off-the-peg suits for five seconds. They tended to rate the guys in tailored suits as more successful.

"On the evidence of this study it appears men may be advised to purchase clothing that is well‐tailored, as it can positively enhance the image they communicate to others," the authors wrote.

People aren't just judging your status — they're making assumptions about your earning potential, too.

In a small 2011 study of college students who were shown photos of a male model dressed in either business or casual attire and then asked questions about how he'd perform in a variety of jobs, the participants tended to predict that the crisply dressed men would make more money and get promoted sooner.

People are looking to see whether you're adventurous during the first meeting.

People don't just read into who you are from your appearance: they're also looking at the way you move.

In a small study, a group of students were shown video clips of other students walking — some with looser gaits, some with tighter ones.

Just a few steps were needed to give the viewers a sense of the other person's personality. They tended to equate looser gaits with extroversion and adventurousness, while seeing the more clipped walkers as more neurotic. Interestingly, the participants were generally wrong in their assumptions.

People can tell if you have an aggressive personality just by your face shape.

Sometimes, first impressions can be totally wrong — other times they can be right on point.

A small Canadian experiment of undergraduate women found that they were able to accurately assess how aggressive 37 different men were after looking at a photograph of their faces for 39 milliseconds. The researchers measured aggression by having the men pictured play a computer game in which they had the option to steal points from another player.

Researchers also found a connection between men with larger facial width-to-height ratios (regardless of their expressions) and perceived aggression levels, and reasoned that it could be because angry expressions involve lowering the brow and raising the upper lip, which increases this ratio.

People may be able to tell how religious you are simply by looking at how you hold yourself.

One study, led by Laura P. Neiman at the University of California at Berkeley, found that 123 undergrads could accurately assess 113 people's religiosity simply by looking at full-body photographs of those individuals. In this case, religiosity was measured by asking the individuals pictured as well as three people who knew them well to complete a questionnaire.

Those who appeared to be smiling, energetic, relaxed, and neat were judged to be more religious — and in fact, they usually were.

In just 50 milliseconds, most people can accurately predict if you consider yourself an extrovert.

That's according to a small study led by German researchers in which people looked at photographs of hundreds of faces and rated the people pictured on different personality traits. The researchers say extroverts generally display more cheerful expressions in photographs, so they're easy to spot.

They write: "Many people attempt to express positive emotions by smiling, particularly when being photographed, but introverts seem to do so less frequently, less skillfully, and in more reserved ways than extroverts."

People make assumptions on your leadership ability just by looking at you.

Researchers asked undergrads to review headshots of close to 100 managing partners at top law firms and rate them on different personality traits, including dominance, facial maturity, likability, and trustworthiness.

The researchers combined the partners' scores on dominance and facial maturity to create a single "power" score, and combined their scores on likability and trustworthiness to create a single "warmth" score. People who scored higher on power tended to lead firms that were more profitable.

Even weirder? The same findings held true when participants looked at college yearbook photos of 73 of the managing partners, some of which were taken half a century earlier.

11 tips and tricks for finding the perfect vacation spot and avoiding bad rental homes on Airbnb

Airbnb Louvre

  • Airbnb is one of the most popular ways to see the world, but there are lots of details to consider before booking with the site.
  • These tips can help you avoid a mediocre experience with Airbnb so you can achieve true vacation nirvana.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

I use Airbnb all the time when I travel or go on vacation.

Hotel rooms can be convenient and reliable, but I often find that booking a vacation home through Airbnb is cheaper, offers you more space, and is a little more fun to boot. You often get a better feel for the local flavor by choosing to live in a home in the area, rather than a standardized hotel room.

I just got back from my honeymoon in May: We were gone for two weeks, visited four different cities in Europe, and stayed in accommodations exclusively through Airbnb.

Some of the Airbnbs were better than anything we could've gotten in a hotel; others fell short of our expectations. But there was a lot that I learned through this experience and others. Here are my 11 top tips and tricks for using Airbnb.

SEE ALSO: The Reddit starter pack: These are the 41 best subreddits everyone should follow

1. Book in advance.

Booking earlier means you'll have more options in any location you choose to visit, and prices are usually lower than when you book closer to the date. This is especially true of popular cities and locations.

When my wife and I booked our trip to Venice as part of our honeymoon, for instance, we were looking at significantly more expensive options because we only booked about a month in advance. (Thankfully, we found a cheaper option, which leads me to my next tip.)

2. Sometimes, it's worth taking a chance on a newbie.

People like booking places that have been heavily reviewed by other people. It means that other people came to this Airbnb and didn't die, which is a good thing!

Still, you might be surprised if you ignore the number of reviews attached to any given listing, and take a chance on a newbie based on their photos and listed accommodations.

Back to my Venice story: Since we were only booking a month in advance, we felt like we were only seeing expensive options. But we kept looking and found a brand-new apartment that no one had stayed in yet. The photos looked beautiful, and we would get 20% off for being one of the first to book, so we took a leap of faith.

It ended up being a great decision: This apartment was easily the best one we stayed in during our whole honeymoon.

3. The term "Superhost" can be deceiving, and doesn't guarantee a quality experience.

Airbnb picks "Superhosts" based on just four criteria: They need to have had at least 10 people stay in their place over the past year, they need a 4.8 rating or higher from at least 50% of the people who stay in their place, they need zero cancellations over the last year, and they need to respond to 90% of new messages within 24 hours.

In other words, being a Superhost doesn't speak to the quality of the apartment.

We stayed in Modena, Italy, as part of our honeymoon, and chose to stay with a "Superhost." Our Modena apartment was easily our least favorite accommodation: It was more flights of stairs than advertised, the apartment wasn't very clean, had no soap, shampoo, or cleaning tools like paper towels, and the apartment smelled like sulfur at times (more on that later).

4. Study a listing's photos carefully.

When picking an Airbnb, it's really important to pay close attention to the photos. Sometimes you'll notice inconsistencies, or the same piece of furniture in two different photos — this may mean that the owner is taking different angles of their space to make it appear bigger.

On more than one occasion, we found we were looking at a studio listing by noticing the photos of the kitchen and bedroom occupied the same area.

Also, be sure to note the decor, and whether or not it gets sunlight. These things may affect you more than you'd think during your vacation.

5. Pick a place that's close to attractions, or places you plan on frequenting during your trip.

Cities can be deceivingly large. Paris, for instance, is way bigger than you think!

If you know you want to see certain sights in a city, or be close to major shopping or restaurant centers, try to look for an Airbnb that will be close by. Remember: You want to spend less time traveling to your various destinations, and more time enjoying them.

6. Airbnb will recommend listings for you, but they won't always be relevant.

When we were looking at places to stay in Venice, much of what Airbnb recommended was actually off the main island upon closer inspection. '

We're so glad we didn't go with what Airbnb recommended, because staying within Venice was a big part why our experience was so magical.

The same thing happened when we looked at Paris listings: Much of what Airbnb recommended was on the fringes of the city, and at least an hour of walking away from the big attractions.

7. If things aren’t clear on the listing, just ask the owner a question by sending them a message through Airbnb. They’ll almost always pre-approve you, giving you a few days to decide before you need to book.

Before booking accommodations for our honeymoon, we asked apartment owners about elevators, flights of stairs, and air conditioning. Owners got back to us pretty quickly, and pre-approved us so we didn't have to rush into a decision.

8. If the check-out time isn’t ideal, you can usually ask the host if they’ll accommodate.

We had to catch trains and flights at various times during our honeymoon, but we didn't want to be stuck wandering the city for hours with all our luggage. So we asked our hosts if we could move the check-out times to accommodate for our travel arrangements — sometimes by just an hour, or even a few — and every single one of our hosts was happy to work with us in advance.

This won't be the same for every host, but it doesn't hurt to ask, especially if it makes you trip a little more convenient.

9. When searching for apartments, be sure to "favorite" your top listings.

After you've favorited your top listings, you can go back and Airbnb will show all of your favorites on a map. This way, you can compare the locations of your favorite apartments with the locations of your top attractions.

My wife and I created a separate Google Map for the attractions we wanted to see in each city during our honeymoon, and compared that map to our Airbnb map of our favorite listings to help us choose where we'd stay.

10. Toiletries vary wildly from one place to another.

Some Airbnbs will have so much soap and shampoo, you'll feel like you're at a spa. Others, not so much.

Sometimes a place won't have paper towels, or even the basics of cooking, despite having a kitchen. One place didn't have salt, for instance, or oil or vinegar to cook with.

You can ask hosts about this sort of stuff before you book, but a lot of places will remember to include these essentials. I'd recommend noting what the apartment is missing when you arrive, so you can either inform the owner in that moment, or after your Airbnb experience when it comes time to leave them a review. (You can also send the owner a private message after your stay with tips on what could be improved so you don't have to shame them publicly.)

11. Smell is really important! When reading through reviews on a listing, be on the lookout for stink warnings.

Over our honeymoon, two of the four Airbnbs we stayed in (50%!) had a foul odor to them for at least part of the time we were there.

In Modena, Italy, we noticed a foul garbage-like smell that would occasionally waft through the apartment. We re-checked the reviews on that Airbnb listing, and found that a handful of older reviews noted this bad smell caused by the sewage outside. We simply weren't thinking about the apartment's smell while reading reviews, and missed these people's warnings.

Another apartment we stayed in had a bathroom that was recently renovated, and smelled like sulfur at night, or when it was raining. The owner chalked it up to the tide outside, but it was pretty unpleasant to constantly deal with.

How 18 of the oldest companies on Earth have been making money for centuries, from guns to beer to shipping

  • Most companies today survive for about 15 years.
  • Many of the longest-lasting businesses produce food items, alcohol, or even guns — things people have evidently been interested in for centuries.
  • The oldest company in the world is a hotel called Nisiyama Onsen Keiunkan in Japan, which opened in 705.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Larger companies, like those listed on the S&P 500, tend to live about 15 years today. So there must be something special about the businesses that have persisted for 300, 500, or 1,300 years.

We looked into the data on the world's oldest companies, and a few themes became clear: People have wanted to eat, drink, learn things, or perhaps kill each other once in a while for a long time. That's why many of the businesses on this list are breweries, restaurants, or manufacturers. One of the longest-lasting, Beretta, is a gun manufacturer.

Here's a list of companies far older than most nations, including the United States.

Founded 705 — Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan in Yamanashi, Japan

The hot spring hotel has been in operation since 705, making it the oldest running hotel in the world, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.

The inn has been run by the same family for 52 generations, according to Japan Page, the English-language expat site. The secret to its success is a sense of inter-generational pride, the report says

... There are even some staff whose families have held the same post for generations, passing it from parent to child to grandchild. All the same, the staff are committed and courteous, earning wages for themselves and their families. They put their all into offering a spirit of service that stems from a shared desire to protect the inn. This unflagging commitment and hospitality is drawing attention from the hotel industries worldwide.

In management-speak, we call that alignment. Generations of it.

Founded 803 — Stiftskeller St. Peter in Salzburg, Austria

This restaurant inside St. Peter's Abbey in Salzburg, Austria, may be the oldest continuously running restaurant in Europe, and perhaps the world.

Its reputation precedes it. The classy dining spot was written about by Alcuin, a follower of the world-conquering emperor Charlemagne back in 803. According to Atlas Obscura, "the restaurant has also been host to countless dignitaries over its 1,200-year history, including cardinals, kings, and in more modern times Bill Clinton and Clint Eastwood."

Founded 900 — Sean's Bar in Athlone, Ireland

Sean's Bar is one of the oldest bars in Ireland and also in Europe. Fun fact: Excavations have revealed mugs and coins from centuries of carousing.

The secret of its success? Location, location, location. From the bar's site

... Sean's Bar is located in the very heart of Ireland, on the banks of the beautiful River Shannon at its intersection with the Esker Riada - the ancient route carved by glaciers that allowed travelers safe passage across the bog for thousands of years. You can find us just next to Athlone Castle, a 12th century Norman Castle whose residents may have frequented the pub!

Founded 1040 — Weihenstephan Brewery in Freising, Germany

Beer has been made at the Weihenstephan Abbey in Bavaria for nearly a thousand years, making it the oldest brewery in the world. Its secret is obvious: The brewery makes incredibly delicious beer — the original brew has an absurd 98% rating on BeerAdvocate, the site for beer nerds.

Founded 1270 — Frapin in Segonzac, France

Some of the finest cognac in the world — and one of the oldest distilleries still around — is found in the southwest of France, where the Frapin family has been using the same vineyards since it opened.

The result is the highest quality spirit.

"Unlike many of its fellow producers, Frapin does not turn to outside growers for grapes and is able to apply the most exacting standards of quality control at every level of production, starting on the vines," according to Palm Bay International Spirits. "Frapin cognacs are, as a result, the epitome of excellence."

Founded 1454 — Aga Hamami Turkish Bath in Istanbul, Turkey

Although Aga Hamami isn't the first Turkish bath, it has the distinction of being the oldest one still in use.

It was founded as a private bath by Mehmed the Conqueror, a sultan of the Ottoman Empire, in the 15th century. Back then, the Beyoglu District of Istanbul was mostly forest, so the city was built around the bath, which underwent several renovations through the centuries.

Founded 1498 — The Shore Porters Society in Aberdeen, Scotland

If you've needed anything moved in the past 500 years in Aberdeen, Scotland, you could have reached out to the Shore Porters Society. They've hauled people's junk around the world since the time Columbus was making trips to America.

Guardian columnist Paul May professed his love for the Shore Porters in 2004:

The company was about 100 years too late to make it into Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, but The Shore Porter's Tale has a ring to it ...

What I love most about the Shore Porters Society is that they haven't made any attempt to update their brand since they dropped Middle Scots. They're not suddenly going to call themselves "Porta" or lose the simple block lettering. They're just going to keep on trucking for the next 500-odd years.

So if you ever go off to find the New World, talk to the Shore Porters.

Founded 1526 — Beretta in Gardone, Italy

If you've shot a gun in the past half-millennium or so, there's a chance it came from the barrel of a Beretta. The arms company got its start when the Arsenal of Venice needed 185 barrels for the arquebus, a gentlemanly ol' hand cannon.

A few factors have been in the world's oldest gun manufacturer's favor: Its hometown is nestled among iron-rich mountains, and the company has been family-run all 400+ years.

Founded 1534 — Cambridge University Press in Cambridge, England

The CUP is the world's oldest publishing house, working out of the ridiculously prestigious university that bears its name. None other than Henry the VIII gave the press permission to print "all manner of books."

A few of the Press's greatest hits

Producing widely read and cited books seems to be a sound strategy.

Founded 1570 — Whitechapel Bell Foundry in London, England

The Whitechapel Bell Foundry has been making the world's finest bells for a while now.

"Whitechapel Bell Foundry's long history spans the reigns of 27 English monarchs," the company says, "and among the royal visitors to the foundry were King George V and Queen Mary who came to witness the casting of two bells for Westminster Abbey."

Of course, the city of Philadelphia may have a few complaints about durability, as the Foundry made the Liberty Bell, which famously cracked when rang.

Founded 1608 — Bushmills in County Antrim, Northern Ireland

Bushmills lays claim to being the oldest whiskey distillery on the planet. King James I — he with the Bible that bears his name — gave a certain Sir Thomas Philip the ability to distill whiskey in the April 20, 1608, according to the company

The company has remained relevant all the while, with James Joyce giving a nod to Bushmills in his epic "Ulysses":

He never forgot himself when I was there sending me out of the room on some blind excuse paying his compliments to Bushmills whisky talking of course but hed do the same to the next woman that came along I suppose he died of galloping drink ages ago.

Founded 1623 — Zildjian in Istanbul, Turkey

One of America's oldest companies started in the Ottoman Empire: Zildjian, the world's leader in cymbals, was founded by Avedis Zildjian in Istanbul before his family brought the percussionist company to the States.

And it's got star power. Some of the best drummers in history have crashed Zildjian cymbals, including Ringo Star of the Beatles, Neil Pert of Rush, and Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones.

Plus, the company has become a part of American identity: The US government granted the manufacturer permission to buy copper during the resource-starved period of World War II.

Founded 1637 — Gekkeikan sake in Kyoto, Japan

Holding about 25% of the U.S. sake market, Gekkeikan is one of the most famous sake producers on earth.

The 370-year-old secret is the neighborhood of Kyoto that Gekkeikan lives in, called Fushimi. The Kyoto Project explains:

Fushimi is an ideal place for sake brewing because of its natural environment. Appropriate temperatures and good-quality water are required to brew sake. In Fushimi, both of these important factors exist.

The city of Kyoto is set in a basin, surrounded by mountains on the north, east, and west. These mountains keep Kyoto very chilly in wintertime. A cool temperature of around 5℃ is important to mature sake in a brewery. So cold winter temperatures created by Kyoto's natural basin is why sake brewing became so deeply rooted here.

To learn (and taste) firsthand, visit the Gekkeikan Sake Museum the next time you're in Kyoto.

Founded 1638 — Shirley Plantation in Charles City, Virginia

America's oldest family-owned business is the Shirley Plantation on the James River in Virginia. According to the Plantation's self-described history, it has "survived Indian uprisings, Bacon's Rebellion, the American Revolution, the American Civil War, and the Great Depression."

The family moved here only six years after the first permanent English settlement at Jamestown, and the 11 generations that have operated the plantation. Records indicate that the plantation had indentured servants, and later enslaved people, from 1616 until 1865, when the 13th Amendment abolished slavery.

Founded 1653 — Royal Delft earthenware in Delft, the Netherlands

The fanciest pottery on the planet comes from a single earthenware factory in the fairy-tale town of Delft, Holland. The style is so intertwined with the city that you call it Delftware, and the only company with a seal approval from the Dutch Royal Family is Royal Delft.

The elegant blue-and-white vases, pots, and bowls are a part of Dutch identity.

CEO Henk Schouten told CNN that commitment is at the core of the company's long-running success.

"We just want to produce high-level products," Schouten said, "because there are many other factories who produce the mass products ... that kind of product you can buy it very cheap in all kinds of shops. When you see a product here hand-painted then I think three quarters of the price is craftsmanship and only a quarter of the price is the cost price of all kinds of material."

Founded 1670 — Hudson's Bay Company in Toronto, Canada

Hudson's Bay Company brands itself as "North America's oldest company." It began as a British fur-trading company tasked with finding a northwest passage through what would become Canada. Through the centuries, it made money through fur, petroleum, and financial services. Today, the company is a department store retailer.

Although it hasn't sold fur since 1991, Hudson's Bay Company still operates department stores throughout North America, including Lord & Taylor and Saks Fifth Avenue.

Founded 1706 — Twinings Tea in London, England

Imagining Britain without Twinings Tea is like imaging America without Coca-Cola: absent of its innermost consumer experience.

Founder Thomas Twining made bank on his intermingling with British cultural identity. According to reports, his Gunpowder Green Tea was selling for the equivalent of $260 per 100 grams back in the 18th century.

Twinings has longevity in more than one way: The company has been located at the same London address since it opened in 1706, and it has the oldest corporate logo still in use.

"Twinings' logo is a simple, classy, and timeless serif font," writes design blogger Tina Mailhot-Roberge. "Although it is not particularly dynamic, it matches its industry, product, and communicates its historical background with success."

Founded 1744 — Sotheby's in London, England

English bookseller Samuel Baker changed the world when he held an auction of books in 1744. That was the beginning of Sotheby's, a name now synonymous with high-brow spending.

A key to Sotheby's success is its ability to stay ahead of the trends in where the wealthy wanted to spend: coins, high-brow art, and real estate, among a few.

Convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein has an expensive real-estate portfolio that includes two neighboring private islands.

In 1998, Epstein bought Little St. James Island, a 72-acre private island in the US Virgin Islands, for $ 7.95 million. The island has been dubbed "Pedophile Island" and "Orgy Island," by locals, according to the LA Times.

Next to Little St. James Island sits Epstein's second private island, Great St. James Island. He purchased the second island in 2016 for a reported $18 million.

According to New York Magazine, Epstein planned to build a compound on the island but was issued a stop-work order in December of 2018 for not obeying environmental regulations.

To the public's knowledge, Epstein owns four other luxury residential properties: a mansion in Manhattan, an estate in Palm Beach, Florida, a ranch in New Mexico, and an apartment in Paris, France.

Epstein's seven-story mansion on 9 East 71st Street was valued at $77 million in a recent court document. However, The New York City Department of Finance valued the home closer to $56 million earlier this year. Over in Florida, his Palm Beach estate, which he purchased in 1990, is estimated to be worth over $12 million.

In New Mexico, Epstein owns a 7,500-acre ranch which was appraised at over $18 million in 2013.

He also owns an apartment in Paris, France, on the famous Avenue Foch. However, very little information on the apartment is available to the public.

Former NFL quarterback Joe Montana's California estate is on the market at a 41% price cut — and it comes with an equestrian facility and a shooting range. Here's a look inside.

Joe Montana house thumb 4*3

Joe Montana, the former quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, has relisted his 500-acre California estate for $28.9 million — 41% less than its original asking price, The Wall Street Journal's Katherine Clark reported.

The property — which includes everything from an equestrian facility to a bocce ball court— was originally listed for $49 million in 2009. That price was, according to Clark, a tribute to Montana's football career.

Olive oil is produced from olive trees on the estate and stored in a cellar in the home. The home also includes a wine cellar that can hold up to 3,500 bottles.

Montana and his wife built the home in the early 2000s. According to Clark, the home features items the couple handpicked from Italy and France including an antique well, old marble floors, and 16th-century iron gates.

To put the price and size of Montana's estate into context, a 50,500-acre California ranch— believed to be the biggest piece of land currently for sale in the state — is currently on the market for $72 million.

3 women tried Patagonia's active swimsuits to see how securely fit — here's how they stacked up

Patagonia Swim 4x3

  • Among its many products geared toward outdoor activities, Patagonia makes women's active swimsuits ($49-$179).
  • Not only are they comfortable and supportive, but they also have design features like UPF sun protection and slip-resistant fabric. Additionally, they're the product of sustainability-driven practices like the use of recycled materials
  • Because they're designed for activities such as surfing, they fit securely as you swim — whether in the pool or at the beach.
  • What Patagonia's swimwear lacks in color and pattern options, it more than makes up for in silhouette variety, functionality, and durability.

With the heat of summer in full force, the sparkling, icy-cold waters of the lake and ocean are calling your name. Of course, to enjoy them properly, you need a swimsuit.

Some women's swimsuit brands we suggest shopping at include online designer darling Summersalt, size-inclusive company Swimsuits for All, and fit innovator Helen Jon. There, you'll find stylish options, durable construction, and affordable prices. But if you're the type to get really active in the water, you'll be happier with swimwear that's designed specifically with high-performance activity in mind.

Patagonia has a swimwear collection representative of the brand's overall leaning towards the outdoors, meaning it has design features like UPF sun protection, slip-resistant fabric, and sustainability-driven production practices like the use of recycled materials

patagonia swim 6

It's reminiscent of activewear brand Athleta's swim collection, which is also centered around physical activity and sustainability. Patagonia, however, is a bigger and older company with a large and diverse number of product offerings, from winter pullovers to travel duffel bags. Lesser-known products such as leggings and this swim collection are apt to fall under the radar.

We're glad we did unearth Patagonia's swimsuits, which include one pieces, bikini sets, rash guards, and board shorts, in time for remaining beach trips this summer.

They're comfortable and supportive, and they come in many different cuts (unfortunately, not too many prints and colors, though some styles are reversible). They're made of recycled nylon or polyester, and they're also Fair Trade Certified-sewn. To top it off, they're designed to stay on your body at all times, even when a huge wave hits you, and allow for full range of movement as you enjoy the water.

Whether you love to surf in the open waters or you turn every backyard pool game of Sharks and Minnows into a high-speed, high-stakes race, Patagonia's swimsuits are one of the best active swim options you can buy right now.

Learn more about how these swimsuits fit and felt, according to three women on the Insider Picks team.

Glassy Dawn One-Piece review:

patagonia swim 3

Glassy Dawn One-Piece, $129, available in 4 colors

Trying to find a swimsuit that has enough support for a DD cup is challenging, to say the least. Throw in a small rib cage and a short torso, and it's basically impossible, but somehow, Patagonia's Glassy Dawn one-piece swimsuit fits me perfectly. I chose this suit because it has a clearly defined shelf, cups that are lined, and handy adjustable straps that can be used to rein in my chest. I also love the adorable parrot print and the recycled materials it's made from, as well as its Fair Trade certification. Malarie Gokey, senior editor

Nanogrip Bikini review:

patagonia swim 5

Nanogrip Triangle Bikini Top, $75, available in 5 colors

Nanogrip Bikini Bottoms, $69, available in 5 colors

Whenever I wade out into the ocean wearing a two-piece, I'm hit with a terrifying vision of losing my top or bottom among the waves. That fear is virtually vanquished when I wear Patagonia's Nanogrip swim pieces. The classic triangle bikini style is made more secure with the cross-back straps, and more importantly, the reinforced elastic lining the bust of the top. The mid-rise bikini bottoms also have a lining to give you that peace of mind and permission to jump into the water with gusto.

You can't tell at all that the soft and stretchy fabric is made from recycled polyester, plus it dries quickly so it'll always be swim-ready during the heatwaves of this summer. —Connie Chen, reporter

Reversible Extended Break One-Piece review:

patagonia swim 4

Reversible Extended Break One-Piece, $149, available in 3 colors

I love Patagonia's sweaters, so I am truly not surprised that the company does swimwear just as well. I usually have a hard time finding one-piece suits that work for me, but this suit is surprisingly supportive for the DDs with which I was cursed. The ladder straps in the front didn't pull, which was my major worry, and the sides didn't come up so high that I was stuck with a permanent wedgie. Another upside is that it's reversible (two suits in one!). The one gripe I have is that the straps aren't adjustable, but they weren't so long that I felt like I was sagging at all.  —Sally Kaplan, editor

How to save any GIF from Twitter using third-party apps on iPhone, Android, or desktop

twitter iphone mac laptop

You'd think that saving GIFs on Twitter would be easy. Unfortunately, that just isn't the case.

Twitter doesn't have a magic button that will allow you to save GIFs you see on its platform. So saving them requires downloading an extra app, or using a website that specializes in GIFs.

On the plus side, there are plenty of options for dealing with this issue. Whether you have an iPhone, Android, or you're using the desktop version of Twitter, here's what you need to know about saving GIFs from Twitter.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

iPhone Xs (From $729 at Apple)

Google Pixel 3 (From $699.99 at Best Buy)

How to save GIFs on Twitter using an iPhone

For those with an iPhone, GIFwrapped is an app that can allow you to save GIFs on Twitter. It's free, though there is the option to upgrade for a fee — it'll disable ads in the app, and give you some extra customization options.

Once you've downloaded GIFwrapped, here's how to use it:

1. Navigate to the Twitter GIF you want to save.

2. Press the down arrow in the top-right corner of the Tweet.

3. Select "Share Tweet via" and then tap "Copy link to Tweet."

4. Open GIFwrapped and navigate to the search tab, if necessary.

5. Paste the Tweet URL into the search bar and press "Search."

6. Save the GIF that appears to your library or to Photos by tapping the icon that looks like an arrow coming out of a box in the bottom-left of the screen, and selecting "Share Photo." Then tap "Save Image."

How to save GIFs on Twitter using an Android phone

First, you'll need to download Tweet2gif— it's a free app that's available in the Google Playstore. You'll have to give it access to the media on your phone, otherwise it won't function.

Once you have that installed on your Android, here's how to save GIFs on Twitter:

1. Go to the Tweet that contains the GIF you want to save.

2. Click the share button (it looks like three connected dots).

3. Select "Tweet2gif."

2 SAVE GIFS TWITTER

4. Click "Download GIF."

3 SAVE GIFS TWITTER

You can change the save location (which is listed at the top of the screen) by going into your settings.

How to save GIFs on Twitter's desktop version

For those on a desktop computer, EZGif is a solid option for saving Twitter GIFs. Here's how to use it:

1. Copy the URL for the Tweet that contains the GIF you want to download.

2. Go to EZGif's GIF optimizer.

4 SAVE GIFS TWITTER

3. Paste the tweet's URL into the text box under "OR paste image url:"

4. Click "Upload!"

5. You'll see the GIF at the top of the screen, and from there you'll also have the opportunity to edit it. For example, you can change the start and end time for the GIF.

6. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and select "Convert to GIF!"

5 SAVE GIFS TWITTER

7. Scroll down again — you'll see another box with the GIF; if satisfied, click "Save" (located in the far-right corner of the new section on your screen).

6 SAVE GIFS TWITTER

In that final section, you'll also be able to make other changes, like adding text or another overlays, changing the speed, and optimizing the GIF or resizing it.

The 7 best small business credit cards to open in 2019

0
0

5c00421a985cfd033849c872 750

  • As 2019 moves along, we've looked at all the new and existing credit cards available this year, and picked a few of our favorites.
  • If you own a small business — whether it's a personal side gig, a sole proprietorship, or something with multiple employees — it's important to keep your business and personal expenses separate from each other.
  • Our top picks include points-earning cards like the Business Platinum® Card from American Express as well as cash-back options like the Ink Business Unlimited Credit Card.
  • Take a look below at our picks for best small business credit cards of 2019, and don't miss our guide to the best personal credit cards of 2019.

Whether you're a freelancer, someone with a side gig, or you run a business with 15 employees, an HR team, and a brick-and-mortar store or office, keeping your personal and business finances is vital. Even if you're a sole proprietor using your personal checking account, things can get muddy quickly when you're cutting personal and business checks from the same account, or charging drinks with friends and your monthly Microsoft Office subscription to the same credit card.

To make your own day-to-day life easier, and to save yourself a tremendous number of headaches when it comes time to file taxes, you're best keeping business purchases separate — I learned this quickly when I started to do some freelance work on the side.

Why you need a business credit card

There are a few other reasons to use a business card, though.

Your personal card might not facilitate the kind of spending your company does. Business cards can have higher credit limits, and in most cases, the activity on a business card won't affect your personal credit report (although if you default on the business card, the card issuer can still come after you personally).

If you're a "sole proprietor" business, where you work solo and work under your own name and social security number (rather than a business name), getting a business card is more about the convenience of keeping your expenses separate, and protecting your own credit profile and assets — even the smallest of businesses are eligible, such as freelancers, individuals with side gigs, or even people who resell things on eBay.

If you're a bigger business, though — or aspire to grow into one, with employees and more resources, having a business card is a must — not only to separate expenses, but also to establish business credit, so that you have flexibility later on with loans and leases. Plus, you can get additional authorized cards for employees as needed.

These are the best business credit cards to open in 2019

1. Ink Business Preferred Credit Card

Welcome offer: 80,000 Ultimate Rewards points when you spend $5,000 on the card in the first three months.

Annual fee: $95

Earning rates: 3 points per dollar on the first $150,000 your business spends on combined purchases each cardmember year on travel, shipping, internet/cable/phone, and advertising on social media sites or with search engines. Purchases after you reach $150,000, or in any other category, earn 1 point per dollar.

Standout benefits: Cell phone protection, primary car rental insurance

If you're looking to earn valuable, flexible rewards points on your small business spending, the Chase Ultimate Rewards (UR) ecosystem is among the best options. If you already have one of Chase's popular personal rewards cards — like the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card or Chase Sapphire Reserve— the Ink Business Preferred is an ideal business card companion.

Like those cards, the Ink Preferred earns UR points, and while you can keep them on that card and separate from the rest of your stash, you can also combine them with the rest of your points. These points can be traded for cash back, transferred to frequent flyer and hotel loyalty partners, or used to purchase travel with a 25% bonus (or a 50% bonus if you move your points over to your Chase Sapphire Reserve).

The Ink Business Preferred card also earns bonus points in some of the most common expense categories for businesses, from travel to shipping to advertising on social media sites like Facebook and search engines such as Google Ads. That earning rate, plus the card's 80,000 point sign-up bonus — the highest bonus currently offered by Chase — should make for a nice stash of Ultimate Reward points.

Among other benefits, the Ink Business Preferred offers cell phone protections. When you use the Ink Preferred to pay your cell phone bill, you're covered for up to $600 for damage, loss, or theft of your cell phone — or your employees' work-provided phones, if you provide them. You're limited to three claims per rolling 12-month period, but this can save you a fortune. That insurance alone makes up for the $95 annual fee.

Click here to learn more about the Ink Business Preferred card from our partner The Points Guy.

2. The Business Platinum® Card from American Express

2

Welcome offer: Up to 75,000 Membership Rewards points (50,000 points after you spend $10,000 in the first three months, and another 25,000 if you spend an additional $15,000 in that same time frame).

Annual fee: $595

Earning rates: 5 points per dollar on flights and prepaid hotels booked at amextravel.com, 1.5 points per dollar on purchases of $5,000 or more (up to 1 million additional points per year), 1 point per dollar on everything else

Standout benefits:

  • $200 annual airline fee credit
  • Access to airport lounges include Centurion lounges, Priority Pass lounges, and Delta Sky Clubs (when you're flying Delta)
  • Up to $200 in Dell statement credits annually (divided into up to $100 between January and June and up to $100 between July and December)
  • One year of WeWork Platinum Global Access if you enroll by December 31, 209
  • Get 35% of your points back when you use Pay With Points to book an economy flight with your selected airline or a business- or first-class flight with any airline

The small business version of American Express's famed Platinum Card used to be our pick for the top business card, but in the past year the annual fee has increased and it's become a bit more of a niche product — potentially useful for mid-sized businesses that spend a lot on flights and travel, but less valuable for sole proprieters and very small operations.

Card holders can now receive a complimentary year of WeWork Platinum Global Access, allowing them to use any of WeWork's 300-plus facilities, which are spread across more than 75 cities throughout the world. The benefit is worth $2,700, according to Amex.

Business Platinum card holders also get up to $200 of annual statement credits to use when shopping at Dell and $200 in airline fee credits each calendar year, essentially rebating part of the annual fee. Plus, because the airline fee credit is valid each calendar year, not cardmember year, you could get it twice in your first 12 months of having the card.

Other travel benefits include access to more than 1,200 airport lounges, 10 complimentary Gogo in-flight Wi-Fi passes each year, and complimentary Gold elite status with Hilton and Marriott.

Click here to learn more about the Business Platinum Card from our partner The Points Guy.

3. The Blue Business Plus Credit Card from American Express

1

Welcome offer: N/A

Annual fee: $0

Earning rates: 2 Amex Membership Rewards points per dollar on the first $50,000 in spending every year (after that, it's 1x point).

Standout benefits: No annual fee, 0% introductory APR on purchases and balance transfers for the first 12 months (then a variable rate of 15.49%-21.49%)

The Blue Business Plus Card doesn't usually have a welcome offer, and that might be enough to turn many people away from it. However, it's the rare points-earning business card that doesn't charge an annual fee; you'll earn 2 points per dollar on the first $50,000 you spend each year, with no bonus categories to keep track of. According to travel website The Points Guy, Amex points are worth 2 cents apiece, so you're getting a 4% return on all your business spending up to $50,000 each year.

There's also a 0% introductory APR on purchases and balance transfers. While funding your startup with a credit card may not be the best idea, the introductory APR can help if you have a few larger purchases coming up and are still working to get cash flow regular.

Click here to learn more about the Blue Business Plus from our partner The Points Guy.

4. Capital One Spark Miles for Business

Welcome offer: 50,000 miles after you spend $4,500 in the first three months

Annual fee: $0 the first year; $95 after that

Earning rate: 2x miles on all purchases

Standout benefits: Transfer miles to Capital One's airline partners including Air Canada and Emirates or redeem miles to cover travel purchases on your statement, up to a $100 credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck

The Spark Miles for Business is a great option if you want choices in how you redeem your miles. You can transfer them to more than 10 airline partners or you can use miles to "wipe" your business' travel expenses from your credit card statement. Beyond that, you can redeem miles for cash back or gift cards. So if you don't want to be locked into just one way to use your rewards, this card could make sense.

You'll earn 2 miles per dollar on all purchases with no cap. Transferring miles to airline parnters like Air Canada, Avianca, and Singapore Airlines will usually get you the most value, but you'll have to do a bit of work to uncover the best uses with each program.

Click here to learn more about the Capital One Spark Miles for Business from our partner The Points Guy.

5. Chase Ink Business Unlimited Credit Card

Welcome offer: $500 (or 50,000 Ultimate Rewards points) after you spend $3,000 in the first three months

Annual fee: $0

Earning rate: 1.5% cash back on all purchases

Standout benefits: If you also have a card that earns Ultimate Rewards points, you can redeem cash back as points with travel partners and get more than 1.5% back per, 0% introductory APR on purchases for the first 12 months (then a variable rate of 15.49%-21.49%)

The newest card in Chase's business portfolio, the Ink Business Unlimited is a simple one at first — earn unlimited 1.5% cash back.

However, just like the consumer Chase Freedom and Chase Freedom Unlimited cards, the Ink Business Unlimited has a trick up its sleeve. Although the card is marketed as "cash back," it actually earns Ultimate Rewards points that you can redeem for cash (1 point = $0.01).

That means that you can combine the points earned from the Ink Business Unlimited with the ones you earn from cards like the Ink Preferred, or the personal Sapphire Reserve, and either earn a bonus when you redeem them for travel through Chase, or transfer them to travel partners. Combined with an Ink Preferred, you'll get a guaranteed 1.5–3 points per dollar spent.

The card offers a 0% introductory APR for 12 months and has no annual fee, making it a no-brainer for every small business owner, freelancer, or side-gig hustler.

Click here to learn more about the Chase Ink Business Unlimited from our partner The Points Guy.

6. Chase Ink Business Cash Credit Card

1

Welcome offer: $500 (or 50,000 Ultimate Rewards points) after you spend $3,000 in the first three months

Annual fee: $0

Earning rates: 5% cash back (or 5x points) on the first $25,000 in combined purchases at office supply stores and on internet, cable, and phone services each card holder year, 2% back (or 2x points) on the first $25,000 in purchases at gas stations and restaurants each year, and 1% (or 1x point) on everything else with no cap.

Standout benefits: If you also have a card that earns Ultimate Rewards points, you can redeem cash back as points with travel partners and get a higher return on your spending, 0% introductory APR on purchases for the first 12 months (then a variable rate of 15.49%-21.49%)

The Ink Cash is another solid Chase entry, and just like with the Ink Unlimited, you can pool the "cash" you earn with points from a points-earning card, effectively converting your cash into (potentially) more valuable points.

The Ink Cash is an especially good option if you can maximize its bonus categories, including office supply stores, internet, cable, and restaurants, among others.

Click here to learn more about the Chase Ink Business Cash from our partner The Points Guy.

7. Capital One Spark Cash for Business

Welcome offer: $500 after you spend $4,500 in the first three months

Annual fee: $0 for the first year; $95 after that

Earning rate: 2% on all purchases

Standout benefits: Free employee cards that also earn 2% back on everything,

This is probably the easiest-to-use card on this list, but simple doesn't mean bad — this can be a fantastically rewarding card.

The Capital One Spark Cash earns unlimited 2% cash back on all purchases. That's it. No categories, no points values or conversions, no redemption minimums. Rewards won't expire for the life of the account, and you can redeem any amount of cash back. The card has a $95 annual fee, waived the first year.

At first glance, the Amex Blue Business Plus might seem like a better option, since it earns 2x points and doesn't have an annual fee. However, keep in mind that while 2x points may be more valuable than 2% cash if you redeem strategically for travel by transferring to partners, Membership Rewards points can't be redeemed outright for cash. You can redeem them for a statement credit, but they'll only be worth 0.6 cents each. That means that effectively, the Amex card only offers 1.2% "cash" back, compared to the no-strings-attached 2% from the Capital One Spark Cash.

Click here to learn more about the Spark Cash from our partner The Points Guy.

'Why won't my iPhone ring?': 7 ways to fix an iPhone when its sound isn't working properly

0
0

on the iphone

  • If your iPhone won't ring when someone calls you, there are several potential problems to troubleshoot.
  • The solution might be simple, like Do Not Disturb mode is accidentally enabled, or it could be that your phone is "stuck" in an audio mode that renders it silent.
  • Here's how to tell what's wrong with your iPhone, and the seven most likely fixes you can use to get your iPhone ringing again.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

It's frustrating when a device doesn't appear to do the one thing that it's designed to do.

If your iPhone isn't ringing when you get a call, there are a few things that might be causing it to not work properly, and most of them are easy to fix on your own.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

iPhone XS (From $729 at Apple)

SEE ALSO: The best iPhone for every type of person and budget

Check to see if your iPhone is set to silent

The first few things may seem obvious, but we'll be thorough.

Make sure that your iPhone's Ring/Silent switch (on the left side of the phone, above the volume controls) isn't in the Silent position. It should, of course, be flipped up toward the screen.

If it's down (with a band of red visible) it's set to silent, and might have accidentally been bumped into that position.

Make sure the volume is high enough to hear

Likewise, it's possible the phone's volume is too low to hear it ringing.

Press the Volume up button on the left side of the phone until you can hear something – test the phone by playing music or a video to make sure it's loud enough.

Turn off Do Not Disturb mode

If your phone is in Do Not Disturb mode, incoming calls will not ring and they'll go straight to voicemail (unless you set up exceptions for specific phone numbers).

To make sure Do Not Disturb mode is not enabled, swipe down from the top right of the screen to open the Control Center screen. Make sure the Do Not Disturb button, which looks like a quarter moon, is not highlighted.

If a specific number won’t ring, make sure it isn’t blocked

Apple gives you the ability to block specific phone numbers, which is handy if you get a lot of telemarketing and other spam phone calls. Make sure you didn't accidentally block a number by accident, though.

1. Open the Settings app.

2. Tap "Phone."

3. Tap "Call Blocking and Identification."

4. In the list of blocked calls, see if you have accidentally blocked any numbers. To unblock it, swipe it to the left and tap "Unblock."

For more information on how to block spam calls, check out "How to stop robocalls and other spam calls from reaching your iPhone."

Make sure there isn’t a problem with your ringtone

We're starting to get into pretty unlikely territory now, but it's worth investigating your ringtone to make sure that the file isn't corrupted, or the ringtone itself isn't just silence.

Why would it be silent? Well, one tactic that some people use to deal with torrents of telemarketing calls is to configure their phone with a ringtone that's literally just several seconds of silence for all phone calls except for friends and family.

1. Open the Settings app.

2. Tap "Sounds & Haptics."

3. Tap "Ringtone."

4. Tap the ringtone that's currently selected (with the checkmark) to make sure it plays. Or just select a different ringtone.

Check to see if any custom ringtones aren't working

If the phone won't ring for a specific caller and that person isn't blocked, then check to see if they have a custom ringtone that isn't working:

1. Start the Contacts app.

2. Tap the contact whose number won't ring.

3. See if there's a Ringtone section with a ringtone selected. If so, tap it and choose a different ringtone, and tap "Done."

For more information on custom ringtones, check out "How to make custom ringtones for your iPhone.

Make sure the iPhone isn’t stuck in headphone mode

It's possible that your phone is "stuck" in a mode in which it thinks it's playing the ringtone, but it's sending it to a device that isn't connected, like earbuds that aren't plugged in or a Bluetooth device that isn't turned on.

Here are some steps you can take to "wake up" your iPhone's audio connection so it's working properly:

  • Try playing music or a video. If, after the earlier steps, you still hear nothing, it might be stuck in headphone mode. If sounds other than ringtones play fine, though, skip this section – it's not stuck.
  • Plug earbuds into your phone and remove them again to coax the phone into recognizing there are no earbuds plugged in.
  • Make sure you're not connected to another audio device. Swipe down from the top right to display the Control Center, and tap the Airplay icon in the music pane (it looks like a triangle with three circles). If anything other than the iPhone is selected, choose the iPhone.
  • Enable and disable Airplane mode – it's the airplane icon in the Control Center.
  • As a last resort, restart your iPhone.

Get your iPhone serviced

If none of the other troubleshooting tricks solved your problem, you probably have a hardware problem with your iPhone, like a damaged speaker or a fried port, so talk to Apple support.
