San Francisco renters are dishing out $1,200 a month for bunk beds in co-living buildings to avoid the city's high rents — here's what they get for their money

PodShare

  • California-based company Podshare is renting out bunk beds in a co-living building in San Francisco for $1,200 per month.
  • The median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in San Francisco is the highest in the country.
  • The national median price for a one-bedroom apartment is $1,216. In San Francisco, it's $3,600.
  • The bunk beds are one of many alternative housing solutions San Francisco's residents are turning to in reaction to the city's soaring rents.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Some San Francisco renters are dishing out $1,200 a month for space in a co-living building — and to sleep in bunk beds.

The co-living situation is a symptom of the city's soaring rent: While the national median rent of a one-bedroom apartment is $1,216 per month, in San Francisco, it's $3,600.

Read more:Here's how much it costs to rent a one-bedroom apartment in 15 major US cities

That means the co-living solution offered by California-based company PodShare is $2,400 cheaper per month than the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in the city. The only thing renters have to give up is their privacy.

PodShare

According to CNN Business reporter Anna Bahney, tenants have access to a bed, locker, and WiFi. Currently, there are seven PodShare locations: six in Los Angeles and one in San Francisco.

The San Francisco location includes one floor of beds, three floors of lounge space, and a communal kitchen. Tenants must stay for a minimum of 30 nights in San Francisco, but can rent for as little as a day or as long as months at a time at the other six locations.

As Business Insider's Megan Willett previously reported, PodShare tenants share a community fridge, food, bathrooms, toiletries, and workspace areas.

PodShare

PodShare founder Elvina Beck explained to Bahney that affordable housing — even at the cost of privacy — in the middle of the city is hard to pass up. She said that tenants are usually between their late 20s and early 30s. Some of the tenants are new to the city, she said, while others are in town for business.

With rents in major cities on the rise, co-living communities and buildings — where utilities, furniture, and housekeeping are often included — are gaining popularity.

In Cushman & Wakefield's 2019 Coliving's Moment report, data shows that tenants who live in co-living spaces spend an average of 20% less on living costs a year than renters who live alone.

Renters are finding other creative ways to save on living costs, too. As Business Insider's Hillary Hoffower previously reported, some San Francisco residents are living in houseboats instead of apartments to avoid high rents. Others are  living in cars, vans, and RVs. Just consider the Bay Area News Group reporter, Tracey Kaplan, who avoided the expensive housing market by using her retirement fund to buy a $53,894 cargo van.

How to block pop-ups on a Mac computer's Safari browser, and avoid fraudulent websites

0
0

safari app mac

  • Pop-ups can be irritating, so knowing how to block pop-ups on your Mac can help streamline your web browsing experience.
  • Blocking pop-ups on your Mac's Safari browser can also help protect your computer by fending off phishing attempts or potential scams.
  • Websites for financial institutions, universities, and e-commerce sites like Amazon, however, will often feature pop-ups as an integral part of their platforms, so you can allow pop-ups for individual sites.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Blocking pop-ups on your Mac's Safari browser can save you from unwanted advertisements, protect you from potential scams and phishing attempts, or just help to reduce distractions.

However, many websites, like banks, colleges, and e-commerce sites like Amazon, use pop-ups as a central component of their platforms.

If you'd like to block pop-ups on your Mac when using Safari, you can do so by accessing Safari's Preferences menu, where you can also change the default settings for certain sites.

Here's how.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

MacBook Pro (From $1,299 at Apple)

How to block pop-ups on a Mac using Safari

1. Launch Safari.

2. In your menu bar at the top of the screen, click "Safari." Find and click "Preferences" in the drop-down menu.

Popup1

3. Once in Preferences, click on "Websites" — the icon that looks like a globe.

4. In the menu on the left, click "Pop-up Windows."

Popup2

5. At the bottom, you will see "When visiting other websites:" and a dropdown menu. Click on it.

6. Select "Block" and Safari will begin automatically blocking all future pop-ups. If you'd like, you can also select "Block and Notify," which will make Safari alert you whenever a pop-up tries to appear, and allow you to choose whether you'd like to allow it or not.

How to allow pop-ups for individual websites in Safari

To allow pop-ups for some sites and block them for others, make sure the specific website you want to edit the settings for is open in Safari when you access "Preferences."

1. With the selected website open, go to Safari > Preferences.

2. Click "Websites," and find "Pop-up Windows" on the left-hand menu.

3. Here, under "Currently Open Websites," you'll see the URL of the site you have open in Safari and a drop-down menu with two blue arrows. Click on it.

4. Select "Block" or "Block and Notify" to block pop-ups on this individual website.

Popup3

Again, some websites, like Amazon, use pop-ups for beneficial purposes, so you may need to occasionally unblock pop-ups to use certain websites.

For more info on how to unblock pop-ups, check out our article, "How to allow pop-ups on a Mac computer while using a Safari browser."

How to allow Safari to notify you of a fraudulent site

1. Launch Safari. Then go to Safari > Preferences.

2. In Preferences, find "Security" — the icon resembling a lock.

3. Make sure the "Warn when visiting a fraudulent site" box is checked. This will enable Safari to warn you before you visit an already flagged "blacklisted" site, typically containing malware or phishing content. Safari uses Google Safe Browsing, a service known to check sites for potential threats.

How to listen to podcasts on your iPhone, where you can access over 700,000 podcasts from Apple's catalog

0
0

iPhone apps and headphones

  • You can listen to podcasts on an iPhone as a great source of information, entertainment, and education. There are now well over half a million active podcasts in production.
  • Apple's Podcasts app is a free and easy way to find, download, and subscribe to your favorite podcasts.
  • If you prefer, there are many other podcast apps to choose from. You can even download podcast episodes from your computer to the Music app via iTunes.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

There's something of a podcast boom taking place right now.

Currently, there are over 700,000 active podcasts in Apple's catalog.

Most podcasts are free, and you can subscribe and listen using Apple's Podcasts app or any number of alternative apps.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

iPhone Xs (From $999 at Apple)

How to find, download, and listen to podcasts on the iPhone

1. If you don't already have Apple's Podcasts app installed on your iPhone, you should start by downloading it from the App Store.

2. Start the Podcasts app and tap "Continue" at the welcome screen.

3. Use the "Browse" button in the toolbar at the bottom of the screen to look for podcasts you want to listen to. If you know the name of a podcast, tap "Search" and enter its name. Tap the podcast name when you see it in the search results.

podcast 1

4. On the Shows page, tap the podcast.

5. For most podcasts, you have several options when the podcast page appears:

  • To start listening to a particular episode, scroll down to find an episode you like, and tap it.
  • To download the episode to listen to it later, tap the plus sign to the right of the episode. The plus sign will become a cloud to indicate it's queued to download to your library.
  • To subscribe to the podcast — and let the app automatically download new episodes as they are published — tap "Subscribe" at the top of the page.

podcast 2

6. After you have subscribed to some podcasts or downloaded episodes, you can find them by tapping "Library." There, you can choose episodes to listen to.

podcast 3

Alternatives to the Apple Podcasts app

While Apple offers the simple and functional Podcasts app for managing your podcast library and listening to episodes, many people prefer other apps, which offer more customization and a better design.

Some of the most popular podcast apps include Overcast, Castro, and Spotify. If you're surprised to see Spotify on the list, don't be — you can find most podcasts in the app along with music, follow your favorite shows, and listen to episodes.

podcast 4

Finally, you have one other way to listen to podcasts on your iPhone: You can download podcasts as MP3 audio files from the web. Most podcasts are hosted on a web page which you can find by searching in a web browser. When you find the podcast, click the "Download" link to save the episode to your computer.

From there, you can copy the file to iTunes and sync it with your iPhone. This isn't the most straightforward way of listening to podcasts, but if you would rather use the Music app than a podcast app, it will work in a pinch.

this bar saves lives 3

Unless you live under a rock, you are well aware that Amazon Prime Day is about to kick off on July 15-16. The two-day event, exclusively for Prime Members, only happens once a year and the deals often rival the ones we see on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Even if you aren't a Prime member (which honestly, you should be because Amazon keeps adding more membership benefits) you can sign up for a free one-month trial and take advantage of all the best deals of Prime Day 2019.

This year, Amazon is collaborating with a bunch of celebrities — JoJo Siwa, Jaden and Will Smith, Hilary Duff, Mark Wahlberg, Kristen Bell and Kobe Bryant to name a few — in order to introduce new and exclusive products and deals. The best part is, you don't have to wait until Prime Day to start shopping. All of these exclusives and deals are already live and available to purchase on Amazon.

Here's a rundown of best celebrity deals of Prime Day 2019.

Kristen Bell - This Bar Saves Lives

Shop Kristen Bell's This Bar Saves Lives snack bars

Mother-of-two Kristen Bell is a cofounder of This Bar Saves Lives, a snack-bar company that is in the business of doing good. The delicious snack bars are gluten-free, non-GMO, and kosher. And every time you make a purchase, you send life-saving food to a child in need.

Now through Amazon Prime Day, Prime members can stock up on the bars for up to 20% off.

Mark Wahlberg - Performance Inspired

Shop Mark Wahlberg's Performance Inspired products

Mark Wahlberg is one of the most physically fit stars in Hollywood, so it isn't surprising that he has his own line of performance products. Now through Prime Day, you can get fueled up with Performance Inspired nutrition products at up to 20%.

Will and Jaden Smith - JUST Water

Shop Jaden Smith's JUST Water

Jaden Smith and his family, including his famous father Will, founded their own water company back in 2012. The line includes 100% spring water in two sizes as well as JUST Infused, the same core spring water flavored with organic fruit essences.

Right now, Prime member can enjoy JUST Water products up to 25% off.

Kobe Bryant - Art of Sport

Zac Brown - DemerBox

Hilary Duff - Cubcoats

Shop Hilary Duff's Cubcoats

Cubcoats are totally adorable, two-in-one hoodies that transform into plush animals that any kid would be obsessed with. They make for the perfect travel companion, as they can be used as a pillow, or just a discreet, safety-blanket alternative. Another cool tidbit of info is that each cub has a special strength, encouraging self-esteem and positive friendships.

Mother-of-two Hilary Duff is helping the company launch four all-new Cubcoats, exclusive for Prime members this Amazon Prime Day — Dayo the Dinosaur, Uki the Unicorn, Light Fury Dragon, and Toothless Dragon.

Prime members can enjoy 30% off on select Cubcoats.

Marshmello - Stuffed Puffs

Shop Marshmello's Stuffed Puffs

Who better to introduce a delectable Prime Day deal involving marshmallows than the famously masked, chart-topping artist Marshmello? Stuffed Puffs are basically upside down — or should we say inside out — s'mores. Real chocolate sits inside the middle of a marshmallow, so it basically melts in the middle when roasting over the fire. Genius, right?

Since s'mores season is in full-swing, there is no better time to order a bunch of Stuffed Puffs at 20% off than now through Prime Day.

JoJo Siwa - 24 new JoJo Siwa products

kindle prime day deals 5

Heads up to anyone who loves to read or plans to spend the bulk of their summer weekends splayed out on a beach flicking through the latest thriller — Prime Day 2019 is coming up July 15-16 and is bound to have some deals to appeal to your bookworm-ish heart and savings-driven brain.

This year, Prime Day will be live for 48 hours, starting at 12 a.m. PT on July 15 and ending at 11:59 p.m. PT on July 16. Because the yearly sales event is hosted by Amazon, it tends to favor Amazon devices and services, and that includes everything Kindle.

Kindle is Amazon's collection of tablet-like ebook readers. It's also an app that lets you read ebooks from your phone or any other type of tablet. Supplementing the devices and app is Kindle Unlimited, a monthly membership that gives you unlimited access to more books than you can count.

A pre-released Prime Day deal lets you enjoy three whole months of Kindle Unlimited for free. It's one of the best deals of Prime Day, saving you $30 over the course of a few months on a huge library of books.

Through July 14, you can also receive $5 in eBook credit when you spend $20 on eBooks.

Amazon is still sitting on most of its Prime Day 2019 deals (though we have guessed at a few of the best deals this year), so consider bookmarking this page so you can check back closer to July 15-16 to see how you can save on each Kindle device and service this summer.

To see what it's like to read with a Kindle, you can first read our guide to using a Kindle, which includes expert tips and tricks. Then make sure you're prepared for Prime Day with this checklist

Below, learn more about all of Amazon's Kindle devices and services that could be on sale.

Want to stay updated on everything Prime Day 2019? Bookmark this page and our master guide to the best deals of Prime Day.

Kindle Unlimited

Currently: First 3 months of Kindle Unlimited for free

Last year's Prime Day deal: First 3 months for $1

Regular price: 1 month for $9.99

Great for particularly voracious readers, Kindle Unlimited gives you unlimited access to over 1 million books, a rotating selection of popular magazines, and thousands of Audible audiobooks. You can access it through any Kindle or device with the Kindle app. Learn more about how to use the service here

The Kindle Paperwhite

Currently: Kindle Paperwhite + first 3 months of free Kindle Unlimited, $129.99

Last year's Prime Day deal: Kindle Paperwhite [Previous Generation], $79.99 (originally $119.99) [You saved $40] *now only available used through Amazon Warehouse

If you hate lugging around books and your bookshelf is already full to bursting with titles, you'll love the convenience of Amazon's best-selling Kindle device. It has converted many Insider Picks reading snobs who previously proclaimed they could only ever read physical books — quite the achievement. The newest one is thinner, lighter, and waterproof. Read our review of the Kindle Paperwhite here

The classic Kindle

Currently: Kindle + first 3 months of free Kindle Unlimited, $89.99

Last year's Prime Day deal: Kindle [Previous Generation], $49.99 (originally $79.99) [You saved $30] *now only available used through Amazon Warehouse

The most basic Kindle is a solid under-$100 ebook reader. Though its resolution of 167 ppi is lower than that of its counterparts, the screen is still glare-free, and the newest version now comes with an adjustable front light.

Possible deal: the Kindle Oasis

Currently: Kindle Oasis, $249.99

Last year's Prime Day deal: n/a

Amazon's most expensive and advanced Kindle e-reader has not been on sale in previous years, but it never hurts to hope for Prime Day 2019. Without any deals, it's expensive, but we still call it the best e-reader you can buy right now because it's incredibly light, has an impressive battery life, and the asymmetrical design makes it easy to turn pages. It has a glare-free, 300 ppi resolution display, plus it's waterproof.

Amazon has officially confirmed that the dates of Prime Day 2019 will be July 15-16

Prime Day Date 15 to 16 4x3

Amazon has officially confirmed that the dates of Prime Day will be July 15-16, 2019.

While Prime Day last year was a 36-hour event, Prime Day 2019 will be a 48-hour event.

Prime members will be able to start shopping more than 1 million deals sitewide at 12 a.m. PT on July 15 and ending at 11:59 p.m. PT on July 16— but you can expect that at least some of the deals will continue on through the days following

In the week leading up to Prime Day, Amazon has also traditionally released a handful of early promotions and deals. These early Prime Day deals usually revolve around Amazon devices such as Kindle e-readers and Amazon services such as Prime Pantry.

Stay tuned as July 15 approaches to learn about more early Prime Day deals. And with the event less than a week away, consider opening a credit card with price protection in case an item sells out or all the discounted products have been claimed.

You'll also want to make sure you have the date marked in your calendar because Target is holding a directly competing summer sale at the same time, and it doesn't require a membership to shop.

Now that you know the date of Prime Day 2019, there are a few things you can do to prepare:

These are the Amazon Fire TV Stick deals we're expecting to see on Prime Day 2019

0
0

amazontv

Amazon has a lot of devices. From Echo Dots to Echo Spots and Kindles to Fire Tablets, Amazon has a whole repertoire of practical and fun tech gadgets. So, when Prime Day rolls around, it's only natural that Amazon drops prices on its own products.

Last year, one of the most outstanding deals we came across was on the Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote. While the Fire TV Stick is usually priced at $39.99, Amazon Prime members saved $20 and snagged it for just $19.99, the lowest price the device had ever seen. We expect to see a similar deal this year.

If you're not familiar with it, the Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote is a media streaming stick that lets you watch videos from your favorite streaming sites, like Netflix, Hulu, and Prime Video, on any TV. All you have to do is plug the Fire TV Stick into your TV's HDMI port to give even an old TV the smart TV treatment. Amazon's streaming stick also is integrated with Alexa, so you can use voice commands to pause, play, and turn on your favorite shows. If you use Amazon Music, you can even use the Fire TV Stick to stream the service's millions of songs. If you don't use Amazon Music, now's a great time to give it a try. As an early Prime Day deal, you can sign up for four months of Amazon Music Unlimited (a service that usually costs $7.99 a month for Prime members) for $1.

It may not be Prime Day just yet, but there's already a great Fire TV Stick promotion you can get right now.

For $39.99, you can get a Fire TV Stick plus two months of HBO. Considering that the Fire TV Stick regularly costs $39.99, you're pretty much getting two months of HBO for free. If you don't have cable, buying HBO a la carte will run you $14.99 a month, so these are some serious savings.

There are a few streaming stick options out there, but the Fire TV Stick is one of our favorites. Our tech reporter tested the Fire TV Stick against the popular Roku Streaming Stick. Ultimately, he found the Fire TV Stick to be a better value, as it comes with more features, but is still relatively inexpensive.

We think the Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote will be on sale again for Prime Day 2019, considering it was one of the most popular deals last year. We're also thinking that the Fire TV Stick 4K, which is the upgraded version that offers ultra HD viewing, has a good chance of being discounted.

If you're looking to upgrade your TV for less, keep an eye on the price of the Fire TV Stick. And remember, you need a Prime membership to get Prime Day savings. If you're not a Prime member already, you can sign up for a 30-day trial now

Check back as Amazon Prime Day 2019 approaches to learn more about all the possible Fire TV deals.

2 American Airlines flight attendants tell us the travel essentials they'd never fly without

flight attendants

  • Preparing for travel can be exhausting. Not only do you need to pack for your destination, you also need to pack supplies for the flight and for hanging around the airport.
  • To get a better sense of what we should pack when traveling, we reached out to the experts: flight attendants.
  • Michaela Rutherford and Justin Moyer have both served as flight attendants for American Airlines. They shared with us all the tips, tricks, and products that'll make your next flight a breeze.
  • Check out the 13 travel essentials you need for your next flight, according to two flight attendants, below.

Packing efficiently is an art. When it comes to the craft, there may be no one more experienced than a flight attendant. After all, their job requires them to travel constantly. They know airports like the back of their hands and they probably take more flights in a week than most people do in a whole year. So, when it comes to knowing what to pack to make airline travel easier, more efficient, and more comfortable, we trust them.

We spoke with two American Airlines flight attendants— Michaela Rutherford, who flew with American for a year, and Justin Moyer, who has been an attendant with the airline for three years — and asked them to share the products they can't fly without. From accessories that make long flights more comfortable to beauty products that make sure they look refreshed by the time they land, they let us in on all the products and life hacks they rely on while they're in the air — and in airports. Hopefully their advice will make preparing for your next flight a little easier.

Keep reading for 13 travel essentials you should always fly with, according to two flight attendants.

Hydrating eye gels

Honest Hazel Revitalizing Eye Gels, 3-count, $14

The plane air drys your skin out so much, so it's super important to moisturize. I love giving my skin a little spa treatment with a face mask or these under-eye gels when I get to my hotel in the evening. Michaela Rutherford

Refreshing facial spray

Cactus Flower & Tibetan Ginseng Hydrating Mist, $27

We all know that flying dries you out. If your face is feeling less than moisturized, but you don't want to use your hands to apply your favorite lotion to your face, a spray is an amazing alternative. No need to transfer airplane germs to your face via your hands. Kiehl's is my go to for everything! — Justin Moyer

A personal carry-on bag

Travelpro Maxlite 5 Women's Tote, $64.99 (usually $99.99) [You save $35]

It's so great to have a purse or tote that gives you easy access to everything you need. Having a slip on the back of the bag is key so that you can loop it onto your luggage and not hurt your shoulders lugging it around. — Michaela Rutherford

Oatmeal pouches

Nature's Path Oatmeal Cups, 12-pack, $23.33

Airport food is expensive and sometimes it's hard to find healthy options, so bringing your own dry snacks that can go through security is a great idea. I love bringing oatmeal pouches for breakfast and getting free hot water from Starbucks when I'm ready to eat. — Michaela Rutherford

A portable charger

Mophie Powerstation PD XL, $79.95

Every flight attendant owns a portable charger. Maybe you're stuck in an airport and every outlet is being used, or you get to your seat on the airplane and realize that there isn't an outlet for you to use. Keep your go-to device charged on the go. Long flights can be boring; make sure your portable entertainment never loses charge. — Justin Moyer

Packing cubes

Calpak Travel 5-Piece Packing Cube Set, $29.97 (usually $48) [You save $18.03]

Flight attendants basically live out of their suitcases and it's terrible when they're unorganized. I find packing cubes super helpful because you can have a different cube for shirts, shoes, chargers, toiletries, etc. and can just grab the cube you need. — Michaela Rutherford

An iPad or tablet

Apple iPad, $249 (usually $329) [You save $80]

I used to bring my big laptop with me every time I went on a trip and it weighed my bag down so much and was too big and bulky to use comfortably on the plane as a passenger. I got an iPad and it's been honestly one of my best purchases! It's so compact and perfect to use in the hotel and also you can download shows on Netflix to watch on the plane. — Michaela Rutherford

Fragrant toilet spray

Poo-Pourri Before-You-Go Toilet Spray Travel Pack, $20.35 (usually $24.99) [You save $4.64]

Have to go? It happens! So be prepared, even when on an airplane. Your fellow travelers and flight attendants will thank you! — Justin Moyer

A spacious cooler

eBags Crew Cooler II, $54.99

This one is kind of niche to flight attendants since passengers can't bring liquids through security, but this lunch tote is perfect for packing meals to eat on your trips since we don't always have enough time to grab food in between flights. You can fit enough food for three days and can use ice packs or ice from the plane to keep your food cold. — Michaela Rutherford

A reusable water bottle

S'well Vacuum Insulated Water Bottle, $32.95 (usually $35) [You save $2.05]

Bring the empty water bottle through security and fill it up while you're waiting for your flight to stay hydrated. Michaela Rutherford

An eye mask

Unimi Sleep Mask, $6.99 (usually $10) [You save $3.01]

Traveling is exhausting and an eye mask is so great. It's helpful to sleep on the plane or even when your hotel room is too bright. Michaela Rutherford

Sanitizing wipes

Sani-Com Sanitizing Wipes, 200-pack, $28.83

I always have alcohol wipes on me — ones that are safe for both surfaces and hands. They are the perfect germaphobe solution to TSA liquid restrictions. You can sanitize whatever surface you need to, and, if needed, they work great on your hands. These are the ones that both pilots and flight attendants use inflight! — Justin Moyer

A packable jacket

Calvin Klein Women's Lightweight Packable Jacket, from $75

Packable down jackets are great because they squish down into a small bag to save you a lot of space when packing. Planes can be cold a lot of times so they are great to throw into your personal bag to have on hand. — Michaela Rutherford

A study of more than 100,000 people has found that drinking juice and other sugary beverages is closely linked with cancer

0

drinking juice cancer

There's fresh evidence that drinking sugar — whether in 100% fruit juice, soda, or sweetened coffee and tea — may increase your risk of developing cancer.

A new study of more than 100,000 healthy adults suggests that regardless of who you are and how healthy your lifestyle may be, if you drink sugar (be it natural or artificial) you are more likely to develop cancer than someone who opts for unsweetened beverages.

"The results regarding fruit juices may be surprising because fruit juices have a healthy image," lead study author
Mathilde Touvier told Business Insider.

But Touvier noted that when you compare the amount of sugar in a serving of fruit juice to soda, the drinks are remarkably alike, so it shouldn't be a shock that juices might hurt our long-term health.

"They contain some vitamins, a little bit of dietary fibers, and no food additives," Touvier said. "But they also contain lots of sugar."

The results of her study, which was published in the BMJ today, suggest that regardless of other factors like how old a person is, what their family history may be, how active they are, how much schooling they've had, or even whether they're on birth control, people who drink more sugar tend to get more cancer.

The finding does not prove that sugary drinks cause cancer, but the association is "significant," the study authors said.

Following sugar drinkers around for years

drinking juice associated with more cancer

This isn't the first time that sugary drinks have been linked with bad health outcomes. Previous research has also suggested that drinking more juice increases a person's risk of death and ups the odds that they may develop heart problems, Type-2 diabetes, or die from cancer.

But this study is one of the first that aims to untangle the dangerous effects of sugar on the body from the consequences of weight gain, metabolic problems, and heart issues that are often a side effect of drinking sweet beverages.

The new study relied on data from 101,257 French adults who participated in the NutriNet-Santé study between 2009 and 2017. The giant study tried to control for all kinds of health factors: The authors accounted for people's weights and heights, exercise and eating patterns, education, family cancer history, and other potentially confounding factors.

The researchers then checked in on the participants from time to time during the multi-year study, occasionally asking them detailed questions about what they ate over 24-hour periods. The scientists included all manner of sugary drinks in their analyses: carbonated and un-carbonated soft drinks, syrups, 100% fruit juices, fruity drinks, sugar-sweetened hot beverages, milk-based sweetened beverages, sports drinks, and energy drinks.

Then, the researchers tallied who got cancer. According to their analysis, it didn't matter much which kind of sugar people slurped: Those who drank just 3.3 extra ounces of sugar per day increased their risk of cancer by 18%.

When soda and other artificially sweetened beverages were left out of the calculations, the data still showed that a person who drinks an additional 100 milliliters of juice per day (3.3 ounces) can increase their cancer risk by 12%, compared to someone who drinks less or no juice. (The findings suggested an especially strong correlation for breast cancer in women.)

"I think juice is a little more complicated than people realize. White grape juice and apple juice are very high in sugar, and that's essentially the same as drinking a soda," Vasanti Malik, a nutrition researcher at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health who was not involved in the new study, told Business Insider. "Certainly the evidence linking juice to a number of obesity and potential cardio-metabolic health concerns has me being more cautious with my kids about drinking juice."

A little bit of juice might be fine, though

juice cancer link

Juice functions similarly in the body to soda and sweetened tea, Malik said, since they all lead to a "surge in blood glucose" when they're digested.

So "it's not so surprising" that all of these types of sugary drinks appear to be linked with cancer, she added.

In addition to raising one's chances of obesity and diabetes, those same blood sugar spikes might help cancer along, Malik said.

However, she is not ready to villainize all pulverized liquid fruits just yet. The new study was an observational one, so it could simply be the case that more sick people are drinking more juice, or some other confusing interplay is at work. There's no way a study like this could perfectly measure confounding factors like that.

"Juice contains vitamins, it contains antioxidants which are beneficial for cardiovascular health and possibly cancer, but then the high sugar levels in juice are adverse. So it's kind of tough," Malik said.

She said she hopes to see more rigorous studies, especially some randomized controlled trials, to get a better sense of how different juices impact our bodies over time.

For now, Touvier said that if you like juice, it's fine to enjoy a little bit on occasion.

"The idea is not to avoid totally drinking any, any, sugary drinks or food juices," she said. "It's just to balance this in our diets, and to drink less than one glass per day."

The World Health Organization agrees with this advice: The agency suggests that people get no more than 10% of their daily calories from "free sugars," whether they be in sweet beverages, candy, honey, or natural syrups. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA), on the other hand, only cautions people about the dangers of added sugars, recommending that people limit those to 10% of their daily calories.

"It's a complicated topic with many lobbies," Touvier said.

NOW WATCH: Researchers finally debunked the biggest myth about cranberry juice curing UTIs

I tried the KitchenAid's top-of-the-line $500 stand mixer, and now I get what all the hype is about

0
0

KitchenAid Pro Line mixer

There are a few kitchen appliances that are dominated by a single brand. For instance, Vitamix is the king of blenders. Instant Pot has cornered the electric pressure cooker market. And, when it comes to stand mixers, experts and home bakers alike consider KitchenAid to be the best stand mixer around.

For 18 years, I have used KitchenAid stand mixers in my kitchens. The KitchenAid stand mixer gets its own counter space because of its attractive design and — I'm a little sheepish to admit — it shows that I have good taste in appliances.

Until recently, I used an older Professional 5 model. Then, KitchenAid sent me its 7-Quart Pro Line Stand Mixer to test. Below are my experiences with this top-of-the-line unit.

Specs

KitchenAid Pro Line Mixer 2

The KitchenAid 7-Quart Pro Line Stand Mixer is available in several colors, including candy apple red, sugar pearl silver, and frosted pearl white. I went with onyx black to match my kitchen's decor.

The mixer comes with a 7-quart stainless steel bowl, spiral dough hook, flat beater, stainless steel wire whip, and a pouring shield.

Here are some more specs:

  • 10-speed slide control
  • 1.3 horsepower (about 970-watt) motor
  • Capacity for 14 dozen cookies or over 8 pounds of dough
  • 16-cup flour capacity
  • 5-year limited total replacement warranty
  • 13-inches wide by 15-inches deep by 16-inches high
  • Weighs 25 pounds

Set-up process

The KitchenAid Stand Mixer is ready to go out of the box. It even comes with the whisk already attached. However, I recommend washing everything before your first use.

If you want to do some mixing, first make sure the speed control is set to off and the unit is unplugged. Fit the bowl supports over the locating pins on the machine. Then, press down on the back of the bowl to snap it into place. Next, attach the whip, hook, or beater by locking it into place on the beater shaft. You can then raise the bowl using the lever, plug in the mixer, and select the speed you want.

I decided to start by grinding meat. Within five minutes of opening the box, I had my meat grinder attachment on the mixer and was making burger meat.

What makes the KitchenAid Pro Line stand mixer stand out

KitchenAid Pro Line mixer 3

The large stainless-steel bowl is nice and roomy. I like that it hooks into place — rather than twisting in like other models. The bowl's handle also feels more heavy duty than those of previous models, and it's rounded for a better ergonomic hold. The speed-control lever and bowl-lift lever have nice round knobs that feel comfortable in the hand.

Previously, I'd had a pouring shield that was two pieces and didn't work too well. I really appreciate the shield that comes with the Pro Line. It's only one piece, and it fits easily over the bowl while it's in position. The pouring chute sticks out enough so you can add ingredients without getting to close to the beater. And, the shield keeps flour and other dry ingredients from flying out — a must when adding flour to a bread dough.

A good test of a mixer is how it does whipping up stiff-peaked egg whites. I made cloud eggs to test this out. To get stiff peaks, I added the whites from four eggs to the mixing bowl. There was room to whisk at least a dozen egg whites, but I only needed four. I attached the whisk and slowly turned the speed control up to 8. In less than two minutes, the peaks were stiff. It sure beat the 10 minutes or more it takes to do it by hand.

I made countless other treats with the help of the stand mixer, including cookies, brownies, pizza dough, ground meats, sausage, pancakes, French toast, ice cream, and more. I never experienced any jams — even with harder pizza dough. And, at no point did it seem like the motor was straining.

The KitchenAid stand mixers are great because of the variety of attachments you can buy to make everything from pasta to tomato sauce. I like that the cover for the attachment hub has a hinge that keeps it connected to the unit so you don't accidentally lose it. Older KitchenAid stand mixers feature hub covers that you remove completely.

Cons to consider

As I washed the bowl, I noticed what appeared to be some stuck-on debris on the bowl interior. Upon closer inspection, it turned out there are slight divots where the handle attaches to the bowl. In my time testing this unit, the divots didn't cause me any problems, such as harboring unmixed ingredients or hard-to-clean debris. But, it's worth noting that the interior isn't perfectly smooth.

The Pro Line mixer is expensive. At 7 quarts, this is more stand mixer than some buyers may need. If $499.99 is out of your price range and you're unlikely to ever need to make 14 dozen cookies at once, read below for our "Which model should you get?" section for more affordable KitchenAid stand mixers and the "What are your alternatives?" section for off-brand solutions.

The bottom line

KitchenAid Stand Mixer Pro Line 4

The KitchenAid 7-Quart Pro Line Stand Mixer is outstanding. I love how the powerful motor can handle harder doughs. I also like the large capacity that allowed me to make double and triple batches of pizza dough. And, I appreciate all of the accessories that are available for the mixer.

Should you buy it?

Because of the price and size of the Pro Line mixer, I would mainly recommend if you have a larger budget, plan on using the mixer frequently, and you like to make larger batches of baked good.

Which KitchenAid stand mixer model should you get?

Previously, I compiled a guide to the best KitchenAid mixers. If you don't need something as heavy duty as the Pro Line, consider:

  • KitchenAid 5-Quart Artisan Tilt-Head Stand Mixer ($273.95)— This model is KitchenAid's best seller and is tops on several expert lists, including our own. It comes in dozens of colors, features a pouring shield, and has a respectable 325-watt motor. The main negative is that it doesn't have overload protection.
  • KitchenAid Classic Series 4.5 Quart Tilt-Head Stand Mixer ($199)— The Classic Series mixer is the most affordable KitchenAid in our guide. It has 10 speed settings and a tilt-up mixer head. The only downside is the motor isn't as powerful as other models. Still, it's a great mixer for beginners.
  • KitchenAid Professional 5 Plus Series Stand Mixer ($399)— I used an older generation of the Professional 5 for about 18 years. It features a 450-watt motor and thorough 67-point mixing. The only negatives are its weight and it gets loud on high settings.
  • KitchenAid 6 Qt. Professional 600 Series Bowl-Lift Stand Mixer ($329.95)— There's a lot to like about this model. It has a powerful 575-watt motor, large 6-quart stainless steel bowl, and comes in dozens of colors. If you want a good mix of power and affordability, this is the model for you.

As with the Pro Line mixer, all of the above KitchenAid stand mixers are backed by a five-year limited total replacement warranty.

What are your alternatives?

Hamilton Beach mixer

There are alternatives to KitchenAid out there. Here are two that may be a good fit for your budget and needs:

  • Hamilton Beach Electrics All-Metal Stand Mixer($199.99)— For its price, this mixer has a strong motor (400 watts). There are 12 speed settings, and Hamilton Beach backs it with a three-year warranty. Unfortunately, it may have trouble with stiffer doughs, such as bread.
  • Sunbeam Hand & Stand Mixer($29.99)— This is a fun stand mixer that converts to a hand mixer. It comes with a three-quart stainless-steel bowl and has five speeds. However, it's fairly weak but may be a good alternative for smaller, light-duty tasks.

Overall, the KitchenAid 7-Quart Pro Line Stand Mixer is the best, most powerful stand mixer I've ever used. If you love to bake and are looking for a statement piece for your kitchen, I strongly recommend going with the Pro Line.

Pros: 1.3 horsepower motor, large 7-quart capacity, compatible with more than a dozen accessories, ergonomic knobs and handles, five-year limited total replacement warranty

Cons: Expensive, may be bigger than what most buyers need

Amazon Prime Day 2019 app 4x3

This is useful all year round, but is particularly helpful on Prime Day when daily deals offer even steeper discounts and change out more frequently.

Below, I'll walk you through exactly how to use the app to make sure you never miss a Prime Day deal when July 15 rolls around.

Most deals won't drop until July 15, but there's no such thing as being too prepared. Watch your deals and get ready to buy

Click the "Watching" tab at any time to see how long you have until your deals drop. Now, all you have to do is wait for a notification telling you your deals are live.

H&M has a new strategy to avoid retail's deadliest mistake

0

H&M

  • H&M is launching a buy-now, pay-later service in the US this fall.
  • Customers will be able to keep an item for 30 days before deciding if they want to keep and opt to pay for an item in four installments. There are no fees to use the service.
  • This is a smart way to appeal to cash-strapped teens and encourage more customers to pay full-price by spreading the cost.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

H&M is the latest retailer to launch a buy-now, pay-later payment program to could encourage shoppers to spend more money at its stores.

H&M has partnered up with Klarna, a global payments provider – that counts Afterpay as a competitor – that allows shoppers to purchase an item and have 30 days to decide whether they want to keep it and to pay for it across four installments.

A spokesperson for Klarna said there are no fees or interest on the service; H&M said this is service expected to launch in the US in the fall.

Read more: The clothing industry is adopting a time-tested strategy to win over cash-strapped Gen Z and millennial shoppers

Urban Outfitters and Abercrombie are already offering similar payment services at their own brands. And while it might seem like a good alternative for cash-strapped teens who want to splash out but don't have the disposable income, it also works in the favor of the brands too.

Aterpay's CEO, Nick Molnar, previously said that paying in installments with this service can help to "increase conversion rates and incremental sales by 20-30%." This is because the retailer is more likely to encourage customers to pay full-price as installments make the total cost seem less overwhelming. This, in turn, could curb the level of discounting in store, one of the biggest issues plaguing the retail sector.

This is especially true for H&M, where sales racks have become a mainstay in recent years. In an interview with Business Insider earlier this year, Martino Pessina, H&M's president of North American operations, said that scaling back on discounting was a key priority for the company; this is one way of doing so.

How to turn off AMBER alerts and other public safety alerts on your iPhone (though you should keep them on)

0
0

iphone amber alert

  • When your iPhone receives an AMBER alert, it makes a great deal of sound, so knowing how to turn these alerts off can be useful.
  • AMBER alerts are notifications issued by the Federal government, designed to help find abducted children.
  • Your iPhone's AMBER alerts sound even if your phone is set to Do Not Disturb.
  • You can disable AMBER alerts and other government notifications in the Settings app.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

The AMBER Alert system is a national emergency response system designed to help find abducted children. While it's officially an acronym that stands for "America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response," it's actually named for Amber Hagerman, a 9-year-old girl who was kidnapped and murdered in 1996.

By default, your iPhone is configured to alert you when AMBER alerts are issued, and they do not respect Do Not Disturb settings — you can receive AMBER alerts at all times of day, whenever they are issued.

If you don't want to receive these alerts, you can turn them off. But keep in mind that if you disable AMBER Alerts, you will not be notified in a timely manner about kidnapping incidents, and therefore you will be less able to help the authorities recover victims safely.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

iPhone Xs (From $999 at Apple)

How to turn off AMBER Alerts on your iPhone

1. Start the Settings app.

2. Tap "Notifications."

3. In the Government Alerts section, turn off "AMBER Alerts" by swiping the button to the left so it's white instead of green.

Note that there are other government alerts in this same section. While we recommend that you leave these enabled, you can toggle emergency alerts and public safety alerts as well. These are alerts generated by local or Federal agencies when they deem a significant threat to public safety.

Here are all the politicians Jeffrey Epstein, the money manager arrested on charges of sex trafficking, has donated to

0
0

FILE- In this July 30, 2008 file photo, Jeffrey Epstein is shown in custody in West Palm Beach, Fla. Labor Secretary nominee Alexander Acosta is expected to face questions at his Senate confirmation hearing about an unusual plea deal he oversaw for Epstein, a Florida billionaire and sex offender, as U.S. attorney in Miami. Federal prosecutors say a once-secret plea deal reached over a decade ago with Epstein must stand, despite objections from many of his victims. Prosecutors said in a new court filing that a violation of the Crime Victims' Rights Act does not allow for the agreement to be voided. (Uma Sanghvi/Palm Beach Post via AP)

Jeffrey Epstein, the financier charged with sex trafficking of underage girls, was once a major political donor.

Since 1990, Epstein has donated $147,426 to various Democrats and $18,250 to Republicans, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Chuck Schumer, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, and Bob Dole each received thousands.

In 2008, Epstein pleaded guilty to felony sexual solicitation of underage girls. Epstein continued to make donations after he was released from an 18-month jail term.

Epstein also donated $25,000 to the Clinton Foundation in 2006, Reuters reported. Clinton said in a statement that he also took four trips on Epstein's private jet in connection with his work for the Clinton Foundation but that he "knows nothing about the terrible crimes" Epstein was charged with.

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is popping up everywhere, from creams to coffee to prescriptions. CBD is one of the key compounds in cannabis plants, though it doesn't cause marijuana's characteristic high. It's being touted as a treatment for all kinds of ailments, but the evidence for some uses is thin.

Meanwhile, CBD is already a $1 billion industry, and some on Wall Street think it could reach $16 billion, aided in part by a recent change in US law that made some CBD legal.

The best air purifier deals we're expecting to see on Amazon Prime Day 2019

levoit

After a long day braving the elements of the outdoors — pollution, pollen, and the smell of garbage — there's nothing better than opening your front door and walking into a room of cool, clean air.

Yet, the air inside your home may not be as clean as you think. Evidence has suggested that most indoor air is actually more polluted than outdoor air, according to The Environmental Protection Agency. Pollen, pet dander, viruses, and fumes from cleaning supplies are just some of the indoor pollutants most of us come across every day.

Luckily, there's an easy and affordable way to make the air in your home as clean as can be. Air purifiers remove most of the pollutants from your indoor air, which ultimately leaves you with fresher, cleaner air. Whether you suffer from seasonal allergies or not, we're sure you'll feel the difference.

There is a wide variety of air purifiers out there — big floor units and compact desktop models with a range of additional features like heating, cooling, and aromatherapy.

If you're in the market for an air purifier, we'd recommend waiting until Prime Day. Like many other home and tech items, we're expecting great deals on air purifiers from a variety of different brands.

Last Prime Day, we saw savings on the Levoit LV-H132 Air Purifier. The compact model boasts ultra-silent operation, removes 99.97% of airborne contaminants, and is relatively affordable at $89.99. Prime members saved $31.50 and got the purifier for just $58.49.

We also saw savings on the Blueair Blue Pure 211+ Twin Pack. This is our favorite purifier for large rooms, as one device can clean air in a room up to 540 square feet. The two-pack is perfect for putting of both sides of a huge room or splitting between a few rooms in the house. Last year, the set cost $465 (it has since increased), but Prime members could save $69.75 and get the twin air purifiers for a total of $395.

While we can't be sure, we think we'll see similar savings this year. Bookmark this page and check back in, as we'll update it whenever we get wind of new air purifier deals.

Check back as Amazon Prime Day 2019 approaches to learn more about all the air purifier deals.

Prime Day 2019 deals on Instant Pots have already started — here's what's currently on sale

Instant Pot

Prime Day 2019 will be held on July 15-16 this year, lasting for a full 48 hours. Prime Day 2019 deals are still mostly under wraps, but deep discounts on the Instant Pot are already available as part of the early deals Amazon has already quietly released

Last year on Prime Day, people bought a whopping 300,000 Instant Pots, the actual Swiss army knife of kitchens across the country. The total volume of orders from the 36-hour event broke Instant Pot's previous sale records. Back in 2017, it also broke the list of Amazon's top five best sellers on Prime Day.

If you're only going to buy one kitchen appliance, or you can only bring one hypothetical tool to a kitchen on a desert island, it would be difficult to find one more useful than this.

Here are the Prime Day 2019 deals on Instant Pots you can shop now:

Screen Shot 2019 07 11 at 3.21.23 PM

Prices may dip even lower on July 15, 2016, but you may also risk the model you want selling out if you wait too long. If you have a credit card with price protection, you can buy before Prime Day 2019 begins and get the difference refunded to your card.

Why buy an Instant Pot?

TheInstant Pot can do more things — and make more food — than you would believe possible in a comically small amount of space. Depending on the model you get, you can feed families of six or more in one fell swoop, and it can replace 10 common kitchen appliances with one: It's a pressure cooker, slow cooker, rice cooker, yogurt maker, cake maker, egg cooker, sauté pan, steamer, warmer, and sterilizer.

The real beauty of theInstant Pot, aside from its efficiency, is its total convenience. It removes barriers both to cooking at home and eating healthy foods. Instead of babying dry black beans with an overnight soak and four hours of patient simmering, you can toss them into the Pot and pressure cook them for 30 minutes while you catch up on a Netflix show.

It's popular with our readers, but also with our team. Our tech guy has sworn by it as well as an Insider Picks editor, and it topped our list of the best instant cookers. It also has over 30,000 five-star Amazon reviews. If you're looking for a new do-anything kitchen gadget, prioritize this one.

Current Instant Pot prices:

Instant Pot 3-Quart, $59.99 (originally $79.95)

Instant Pot 6-Quart, $49.99 (originally $99.95)

Instant Pot 8-Quart, $79.99 (originally $139.95)
