  • MacKenzie Bezos and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos announced that they had finalized the terms of their divorce on Twitter on April 4.
  • She is an award-winning novelist, who's had literary ambitions since she was six years old.
  • She's now the author of two novels, "The Testing of Luther Albright" and "Traps."

When Jeff Bezos told his then-wife MacKenzie about his idea for a new company, she was immediately on board.

Bezos traveled with her husband to Seattle, where she worked for the fledgling Amazon as an accountant.

The move was a bit of a departure for the Princeton grad, who had long dreamed of becoming a writer. But she was eager to support her husband.

"To me, watching your spouse, somebody that you love, have an adventure — what is better than that?" MacKenzie said during an interview with CBS.

Since the early days of Amazon, Bezos has gone on to pursue her literary dreams, publishing two novels, "The Testing of Luther Albright" in 2005 and "Traps" in 2013.

The couple announced their plans to divorce in January 2019, and declared that they had finalized the terms of their divorce on April 4, 2019. In a tweet, MacKenzie explained that should would be passing on "all of my interests in the Washington Post and Blue Origin, and 75% of our Amazon stock plus voting control of my shares to support his continued contributions with the teams of those incredible companies."

Business Insider's Hillary Hoffower wrote that the novelist's remaining shares still likely leave her as one of the world's richest women.

Here's a look at the career of award-winning novelist MacKenzie Bezos:

7 alternatives to plastic bags — from reusable produce bags to clever totes that fold up to fit in your pocket

  • While a lot of plastic can be recycled, most of it never makes its way to the recycling bin — instead it ends up in landfills that pollute our waterways. The levels of plastic pollution in our oceans are so high, it's been predicted that by 2050 plastic will outweigh fish in the ocean.
  • New York is the latest entity to impose a single-use plastic bag ban. Whether you live in the state or not, this effort sheds light on the fact that we could all reduce our consumption of single-use plastics.
  • If you're looking for plastic bag alternatives, check out our list of seven great options below. They're just as convenient and affordable, and they all look much cooler than plastic bags.

In terms of materials, plastic is about as ubiquitous as they come. It's everywhere — one of the main ingredients in the majority of items we encounter every day. We get our groceries packed in plastic bags. We squeeze shampoo, conditioners, and lotion out of plastic bottles. Our takeout bags are filled with plastic containers and plastic utensils.

A lot of plastic products can be recycled, but the majority of them just end up in landfills and go on to pollute our oceans. A report from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation predicts that by 2050, plastic in the oceans will outweigh fish. If we keep disposing of plastic at the rate we're going, in 31 years there will be about 850-950 million tons of plastic in the ocean, and only 812-899 million tons of fish.

Looking at those harrowing numbers can be overwhelming — as an individual, it's hard to imagine that our small actions could move the needle at all. But we have to start somewhere.

Reducing your own single-use plastic bag consumption is an environmentally, not to mention fiscally, responsible move. And, these days it couldn't be easier to ditch single-use plastic — there are so many brands offering reusable alternatives that are more affordable and much better looking than plastic bags anyway.

If you're looking to find some great reusable plastic bag alternatives, keep reading for 7 cool, convenient, and affordable options:

Baggu Reusable Bags

Baggu Reusable Bags, $10 - $12, available at Baggu and Amazon

Baggu's nylon reusable bags can hold between 30 to 50 pounds worth of stuff, but can also fold up into a little five-by-five-inch pouch for easy storage. The bags come in a wide range of cute colors and patterns, made from a non-recycled ripstop nylon ($10) or an option made with 40% recycled nylon, sourced from pre-consumer waste. Use your Baggu in place of plastic bags at the grocery store or as a tote bag to carry literally anything else. Plus, for every reusable bag sold during the month of April, Baggu will donate $0.10 to the Surfrider Foundation to help keep plastic pollution out of the ocean.

BahrEco Produce Bags

BahrEco Reusable Mesh Produce Bags, $9.97, available at Amazon

Most of us have become accustomed to putting all of our fresh produce into plastic bags when we go grocery shopping. These bags offer a solution that's just as convenient, but a lot more eco-friendly. They're made from a breathable mesh that's easy to fold, take on the go, and clean — just throw the bags in the washing machine when it's time for a wash. Drawstrings keep your food secure and the color-coded tops help you separate and organize produce. For just $10, you get five multipurpose bags that can go beyond just produce too — use them to store toys and small accessories, or even in lieu of packing cubes when you travel.

Society6 Canvas Tote Bags

Society6 Canvas Tote Bags, $24.99 - $29.99, available at Society6

Swapping plastic grocery bags out for a reusable canvas option is a simple way to lessen your environmental impact, and maybe even save some money doing it stores like Trader Joe's and Whole Foods will give you a discount on your purchase for bringing your own bags. amazon jeff bezos monopoly money 4x3

  • Jeff Bezos and MacKenzie Bezos have finalized the terms of their divorce after 25 years of marriage, the couple announced on Thursday.
  • As part of the divorce agreement, MacKenzie Bezos said she would give Jeff Bezos 75% of their Amazon stock, plus all the couple's interests in The Washington Post and Blue Origin.
  • With his revised stake, Bezos' net worth will decrease, but he'll still holds the title of the richest person.

The richest couple — Jeff and MacKenzie Bezos — is in the midst of finalizing their divorce. But when the dust settles, the Amazon CEO's reign as the richest person is unlikely to end.

The couple released separate statements on Thursday announcing they had "finished the process of dissolving" their marriage of 25 years. As part of the divorce agreement, MacKenzie Bezos said she would give Jeff Bezos 75% of the Amazon stock they co-owned, as well as all of her interests in the Washington Post and Blue Origin.

MacKenzie Bezos' 25% stake in Amazon positions the novelist to become one of the richest women, with a net worth of about $35.7 billion at Amazon's current stock price.

Read more: Jeff Bezos' divorce won't affect his voting power at Amazon, because MacKenzie is giving him control

However, the billionaires' list isn't a new place for her soon-to-be ex-husband, Jeff Bezos. The Amazon founder and CEO has held the title of the richest person since surpassing Bill Gates back in October 2017. Bezos has been steadily building his fortune since then, and the latest Forbes' billionaires ranking had his net worth at $131 billion.

But with the divorce agreement, Bezos' net worth is set to decrease. His 75% stake will give him 59.1 million shares in Amazon. Based on current market prices, Bezos' post-divorce revised stake in Amazon is worth an estimated $107.4 billion.

That Amazon stake alone stands to put Bezos' net worth above that of Bill Gates, whose net worth is an estimated $96.5 billion, according to Forbes

It's unclear how the couple will be splitting up their massive stockpile of real-estate holdings. A 2017 report listed the Bezoses as the country's 28th largest landowner, with properties in Medina, Washington; Van Horn, Texas; Washington, DC; Manhattan, New York; and two mansions in Beverly Hills, California.

9 of the most exclusive Disney spots to visit, including the invite-only suite where Tom Cruise and Mariah Carey have stayed

  • Disney park tickets are getting more expensive, but some experiences at Disney World and Disneyland come with their own price tags, especially if you're looking for the royal treatment.
  • An 11-course meal at Victoria and Albert's will cost $250, while a night in the Cinderella Castle Suite is so exclusive, not even money can book your stay — you'll have to get an invitation.
  • Watch the video above to see just how luxurious a trip to Disney can be.

Following is a transcript of the video.

We all know Disney parks aren't really affordable to begin with, but if you're looking to sprinkle a little extra Disney elegance into your visit, there are plenty of ways to experience the magic like a true king or queen. A nice queen, don't worry.

Here's our list of the most exclusive spots in America's Disney parks.

1. Cinderella Castle Suite

First up, the Cinderella Castle Suite. At the top of the iconic Cinderella Castle in Magic Kingdom, there's a private suite hidden inside. With towering princess beds, an ornate bathroom, and "Cinderella" props throughout, the suite is definitely fit for a royal. A night's stay here is so exclusive, you can't actually book it. The suite is by invite only. But it's rumored Disney turned down an offer of $40,000 for a one-night stay. Some lucky fans have scored a stay by winning various contests. Special guests at the Cinderella Suite have included Tom Cruise and Mariah Carey.

2. Imagineer Dinner

You've probably heard of the Disney Imagineers — or the masterminds behind the rides, the shows, the music, pretty much everything that's cool at Disney parks — and if you've ever wanted to meet one, we'll do you one better. How about a dinner with an Imagineer? Once a month, you can learn from one of these Disney legends over a four-course meal at Cítricos in the Grand Floridian Resort. The only thing is, you won't know who you're eating with until you get there. The experience will set you back $89 and is limited to guests 14 and older.

3. Victoria and Albert's

Located in Disney's Grand Floridian Resort and Spa, Victoria and Albert's is probably the ritziest restaurant at Disney World. With only 18 tables, reservations are required, and a fancy dress code is strictly enforced. But getting all glammed up is definitely worth it for their chef's tasting menu. The 11-course meal comes in at $250. But if you're wanting something even more exclusive, you can book a table for up to eight people in a completely separate and private space, in the Queen Victoria Room.

4. Morimoto Asia

Morimoto Asia isn't as high-end as Victoria and Albert's, but it does have a little something special up its sleeve. "Iron Chef" Masaharu Morimoto opened the glitzy restaurant in 2015. Located in Disney Springs, it specializes in Pan-Asian cuisine. Their most exclusive dish is the Japanese A5 Wagyu beef. The beef has the highest rating for Wagyu and is imported from Japan. Each ounce costs $25, but there's an order minimum of 3 ounces, so be prepared to pay about $75 at least. They also have a Toku-Jyo Sashimi Platter that runs for $100.

5. Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique

Looking to spoil your little ones? Hop over to Cinderella's Castle in Magic Kingdom to the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique. Here, one of the Fairy Godmother's apprentices will transform your kiddo into a knight or one of their favorite princesses. The all-in package for knights costs $80, but for Disney princesses, a full transformation starts at $450. It includes a hair styling, makeover, manicure, gown, and tiara. You can get princess shoes but for an extra cost. These magic makeovers require a reservation and are only available for kids 3 to 12.

6. Golden Oak Residences

Four miles away from Magic Kingdom is the super-exclusive gated community called Golden Oak. Three-hundred homes, each with a little Disney flair, make up eight neighborhoods. But living so close to all the Disney magic doesn't come cheap. Each one runs for about $2.3 million. All Golden Oak residents get access to a luxurious clubhouse complete with a pool, gym, and spa. Another perk: Markham's Restaurant. You have to be a resident here to experience all their Disney-themed meals.

7. Club 33

A luxury Disney experience doesn't stop in Florida. Over at Disneyland in California, Club 33 has been serving an exclusive group of fans since 1967. Located in New Orleans Square, the club's existence was once secret, but now it's pretty well known although few get to experience it. Reportedly, the initiation fee runs between $25,000 and $100,000. Members pay an additional annual fee from $12,500 to $30,000 depending on how exclusive their membership is. And for those willing to foot that bill, membership does come with a couple perks, like the swanky restaurant Le Grand Salon and the lounge attached to it, which is the only place that serves alcohol in Disneyland.

8. Lilly Belle Train

Anybody can ride the steam-powered train of Disneyland's railroad, but you might not know that there's a separate train that runs only occasionally. The Lilly Belle car is named after Walt Disney's wife, Lillian, and apparently it's the last remaining car from the opening day of the park back in 1955. It doesn't run every day, but when it does, you can ride it for free, but you have to be one of the first 14 people in line, so get there bright and early. But for the rest of us late risers, the $85 Grand Circle Tour will get you a peek of the train as well.

9. Walt Disney's Apartment

Back in 1954, as Disneyland was under construction, Walt Disney wanted a place where he could watch over his project. So he had this private 500-square-foot apartment built. The once secret space is located on the second floor of the Fire House on Main Street. It's decorated by Disney's original set designer and looks exactly like how Walt Disney left it. You can't actually stay here, but for $109 per person, the Walk in Walt's Disneyland Footsteps tour will get you a little closer to the man himself.

MacKenzie Bezos may only be taking 25% of Jeff Bezos’ fortune, but she deserves half because there would be no Amazon without her (AMZN)

Jeff Bezos

  • Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos created the world's most valuable company during the 25 years he was married to MacKenzie Bezos.
  • The couple, who announced plans for divorce in January, apparently had no prenuptial agreement and live in a state where assets are split 50-50.
  • In April, MacKenzie and Jeff Bezos tweeted that their divorce was finalized, and MacKenzie would walk away with 25%. MacKenzie Bezos said in a statement that she would grant Jeff Bezos all her interests in The Washington Post and Blue Origin, as well as 75% of the Amazon stock they owned and voting control over the shares she's retaining.
  • MacKenzie was part of Amazon's early team, helping to come up with the name and serving as its first accountant. But there's another reason she deserves half of the $137 billion Amazon fortune.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories like this.

Jeff Bezos, the world's wealthiest person and the CEO of Amazon, is getting divorced from MacKenzie Bezos, his spouse of 25 years.

Apparently, there was no prenup. And in Washington, where the couple lives, assets acquired during a prenup-less marriage are split 50-50.

Jeff and MacKenzie Bezos finalized their divorce in April. MacKenzie will walk away with 25% of the fortune and a net worth of about $36 billion. Her interests in The Washington Post and Blue Origin will be handed to her ex-husband, who will remain the wealthiest person in the world, as well as voting control over her remaining Amazon shares.

But if you're married to the world's richest person (Bezos' net worth is $137 billion!) who is entirely self-made, do you  deserve to get half instead?

For MacKenzie Bezos, absolutely. For one simple reason: There would be no Amazon without her.

MacKenzie Tuttle and Jeff Bezos met in 1992 when they both worked for hedge fund D.E. Shaw. MacKenzie graduated from Princeton and became a research associate at the firm where Bezos was a vice president. Her office was next door to his, and three months after they began dating, in 1993, they were married.

While at D.E. Shaw, Bezos came up with the idea for Amazon. MacKenzie was supportive from the beginning, despite the high probability that his venture would fail (after all, almost all startups do).

Brad Stone writes in The Everything Store: "At the time, Bezos was newly married, with a comfortable apartment on the Upper West Side and a well-paying job. While MacKenzie said she would be supportive if he decided to strike out on his own, the decision was not an easy one."

MacKenzie later told CBS: "I'm not a businessperson. So to me, what I'm hearing when he tells me that idea is the passion and the excitement... And to me, you know, watching your spouse, somebody that you love, have an adventure — what is better than that, and being part of that?"

In 1994, at ages 30 and 24, respectively, Jeff and MacKenzie decided to blow up their cushy lives.

They road-tripped across the US in search of a new home and headquarters for Amazon. MacKenzie drove while Bezos punched out a business plan and revenue projections in the passenger seat. After starting in Texas and buying a beat-up car, they wound up in Seattle.

The pair brainstormed the name "Amazon" together after almost choosing a different name: Relentless.com. MacKenzie became Amazon's first accountant, despite being an aspiring novelist.

She did a lot of other grunt work, like most early startup employees do, from driving book orders to the post office to handling the company's bank account and line of credit. She met early Amazon investor John Doerr and partied with the team in Mexico after Amazon's IPO.

But beyond her early role in the company is the significant role any spouse plays in a partner's career.

Both Warren Buffett and Sheryl Sandberg say that the most important career decision you can make is who you marry.

Sure, there's the sacrifice one partner might make to allow the other to pursue a demanding career. But that's not what Buffett was getting at.

"Marry the right person," he said at the 2009 Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting. "I'm serious about that. It will make more difference in your life. It will change your aspirations, all kinds of things."

Would the notion of opening an online bookstore have taken hold of Bezos as forcibly if he hadn't met MacKenzie? Would he have executed on that vision in the same way, hired the same people and taken the same kinds of risks with a different partner?

These are impossible questions to answer. But it's not outrageous to suggest that a person's motivations, attitudes, and goals are influenced by the most important person in their life.

Regardless of whether a spouse is listed as a partner on a business masthead, many couples operate as a team focused on a grand, overarching enterprise and work in tandem to achieve common goals. That's part of the reason many state laws recognize the concept of community property.

Buffett has said that without his first wife, Susie, who died in 2004, he would not have built his fortune.

"What happened with me would not have happened without her," he said in a 2017 HBO documentary.

What happened to Bezos would not have happened without MacKenzie.

How to save, view, and share GIFs on your iPhone or iPad

iphone and iphone

If you want to send your friends funny GIFs in texts or emails, or you simply want to save a few favorites on your phone to amuse yourself, you're in luck — so long as you have an iPhone or iPad running an iOS 10 or newer operating system.

And if you don't, you're still likely able to save GIFs on an iOS device— just download an app like Google Photos, or the Giphy app.

One more note: while you can save and send GIFs from an iOS 10 system, only iOS 11 and later phones (or tablets) let you actually play the GIF right there in your photo library. It's phones and tablets with this ability we'll be covering from here on out.

How to save a GIF to your iPhone or iPad

First, of course, you need to find the GIF you want to save. I went with GIFs of pandas falling over as I prepped for this article, because of course.

IMG_3633.PNG

1. Search for a GIF on Google Images via your mobile browser.

2. Once found, tap on the GIF to open it as much as possible (so you are not viewing it in search results, e.g.)

2. Hold your finger down on the GIF until a new menu opens up.

3. In this new menu, tap the words "Save Image."

IMG_0729.PNG

And, if you now want to see the GIF you just saved:

4. Open the "Photos" app on your device.

5. The GIF will be available in "All Photos," but to keep them sorted, tap the "Albums" icon on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen.

IMG_3635.PNG

6. Scroll down to the list reading "Media Types" and tap "Animated."

7. You will be taken to all of your saved GIFs — from here you can view, share, or delete them as you please.

Enjoy!

How to change the margins on your Google Docs in two ways

$
0
0

guy on laptop

  • You can change the margins in Google Docs by dragging the grey zone of the document's ruler to the left or right, or through the "Page Setup..." feature.
  • Margins are the unused space around your documents – different than the indents, which determine how far from the margin your paragraph text appears.
  • To change all four margins (including the top and bottom margins) of the page, open the "Page Setup..." dialog box under the "File" tab in your Google doc.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

The margin is the unused space around a document – top, bottom, and both sides – that doesn't have any text or images. Margins are the things that keep your text from colliding with the edges of the document.

That's often an aesthetic choice; text that is too close to the edge of the paper looks ugly. But you often also need a margin (especially on the left) to accommodate some kind of binding for printed documents.

Don't confuse the margin with indents. An indent is how far the first line of a paragraph is offset from the margin. You may have a one-inch margin and another half-inch indent, so text starts 1.5 inches from the edge of the page. And while you might have several different indents throughout the same document, a document can have only one margin.

There are two ways to set margins in Google Docs. You can use the ruler to quickly set the margins by dragging it with the mouse, or you can type the margin (in inches) in the page setup dialog box.

How to change the margins in Google Docs using the ruler

1. If it's not already visible, turn on the ruler by clicking "View" and then "Show ruler."

2. Let's start with the left margin. Position the mouse pointer anywhere over the grey zone (which indicates the margin) atop the screen on the left of the ruler, so you see the pointer change into a two-direction arrow.

margin 1

3. Click and drag the grey zone to the right to make a larger margin, or to the left to make it smaller.

4. Notice that the end of the margin also has a small blue rectangle and a downward-pointing triangle. These icons are the First Line Indent and the Left Indent, respectively. Since the indent icons travel with the margin, you might want to position the indents as well. By default, your document will have no idents (the text will be flush with both margins) but you might instead want to drag the First Line Indent to the right by about a half inch, or you might want a hanging indent.

margin 2

5. You can adjust the other margins – right, top, and bottom, in the same way. Drag the grey margin as desired. You can find the top and bottom margins in the vertical ruler on the left side of the screen.

margin 3

How to change the margins in Google Docs using "Page Setup"

1. Click File, and then click "Page Setup..."

2. In the page setup dialog box, you can enter the exact margins you desire (in inches).

margin 4

3. Click OK.

The 15 most popular flights in the world

Sydney Airport

  • Travel data provider OAG recently released its annual list of the busiest routes in the world, and the number of flights airlines operate between some destinations is simply astonishing.
  • Eight of the 15 most popular flights in the world are in Asia.
  • The busiest route in the world is between Seoul and Jeju Island, South Korea with more than 79,000 flights a year.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

With air travel growing at an impressive rate around the world, certain routes have developed into veritable highways in the sky.

Recently, travel data provider OAG released its annual list of the busiest routes in the world, and the number of flights airlines operate between some destinations is simply astonishing.

According to the OAG rankings, based on the total number of flights between two airports, routes in Asia take up eight of the top 15 spots. That's no surprise to OAG senior analyst John Grant.

"Asia is once again home to the world’s busiest routes," Grand said in a statement. "In addition to the dominant role played by Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Jakarta have become Asia’s new ‘golden triangle,’ offering similar benefits to major U.S. hubs, Boston, New York, and Washington."

Read more: The 20 biggest airlines in the world, ranked.

The busiest route in the world is between Seoul and the popular vacation destination of Jeju Island, just south of the Korean Peninsula. In 2018, seven airlines combined to operate 79,460 flights between Seoul's Gimpo International Airport and Jeju International. That breaks down to roughly 201 flights per day — making it the most popular flight in the world.

Asiana led the way with 19,434 flights last year followed by Jeju Airlines with 14,286 flights. Korean Air finished third with 11,909 flights, just ahead of Jin Air's 11,290 flights.

Incredibly, the 15 busiest routes in the world are also domestic. The most popular international route — between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia — finished 16th with 30,187 flights.

The most popular flight in the US is between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Last year, five airlines operated 35,365 flights between the two California cities.

Here's a closer look at the busiest routes in the world (also known as the most popular flights in the world).

A sommelier ranked cheap wines from Costco, Target, Trader Joe's, BJ's, and Lidl and said this retailer did best overall (COST, TGT, BJ)

  • We asked a sommelier to taste-test a selection of budget wines from Costco, Target, Trader Joe's, BJ's, and Lidl.
  • These wines were all priced below $10, with one bottle costing as little as $3.99.
  • Here's how sommelier Sara Lehman ranked each brand overall.

Costco and Trader Joe's might not spring to mind when you're thinking about where to shop for good wines, but plenty of shoppers swear by these stores when it comes to finding a good-quality budget bottle.

Read more:We taste-tested 7 of Costco's Kirkland wines and were blown away by their price and quality. Here's how they ranked from worst to best.

We asked sommelier Sara Lehman to rank her favorite bottle of red, white, and rosé wines from a selection that we picked from Costco, Target, Trader Joe's, BJ's, and Lidl. We then asked her to pick her favorite brands overall.

We planned to compare a cabernet sauvignon, pinot grigio, and rosé from each brand, but in some cases these wines were not available.

Here's how the brands stacked up:

5. BJ's

We tested BJ's Wellsley Farms collection, which launched earlier this month. This five-bottle collection does not include a rosé, so we tested its cabernet sauvignon from California, which starts at $7.99, and its pinot grigio from Venezie, Italy, which starts at $6.99.

It ranked in last place of the five retailers.

"I was looking for a little more character and complexity," Lehman said.

She was initially impressed by the spicy flavor in the cabernet sauvignon but said this faded quickly.

"It's a nice wine, nothing too complex, a lot of fruit, and then it finishes flat," she said.

She recommended bringing this to a potluck where there is a lot of different food on offer and you don't need the wine to be paired with one particular dish.

The pinot grigio was "decent," she said, and a good example of what you would expect a typical pinot grigio to be.

She described BJ's bottles as being the most typical flavor for a low-cost wine.

"It tastes very commercial," she said.

4. Trader Joe's

Trader Joe's famous "two-buck Chuck" collection was the cheapest of all the wines we tasted, but it didn't quite cut the mustard when it came to taste.

We tried the cabernet sauvignon, pinot grigio, and rosé from its Charles Shaw organic collection; these wines all cost $3.99 each.

Lehman was least complimentary about the white wine, saying that it tasted a lot like apple juice.

"Stick a straw in it and I think it would be really good," she said.

The rosé and reds were better, she said, but they still didn't have much taste.

"I wouldn't put too many flavors with [the rosé] because you would lose the taste completely," she said in reference to food-pairing options.

3. Costco

Costco's low-cost Kirkland collection was the biggest surprise of all.

We tested its Kirkland cabernet sauvignon and its Kirkland pinot grigio. These giant, 1.5-liter bottles cost under $8.

"I am not going to lie, I had a little bit of a stigma coming in," Lehman said, pointing out the magnum-sized — but low-cost — bottles. "But I was really pleasantly surprised."

The Kirkland brand is known for being a popular choice of Costco members and it's become one of the store's biggest assets. According to a recent report from UBS, the Kirkland Signature label could be worth as much as $75 billion.

Summersalt makes some of the best swimwear and travel clothing we've tried — here's what 6 women had to say about its new underwear and bra sets

Insider Picks writes about products and services to help you navigate when shopping online. Insider, Inc. receives a commission from our affiliate partners when you buy through our links, but our reporting and recommendations are always independent and objective.

20190206_KS19005_Summersalt_04_747 (1)

  • Summersalt is a women's clothing startup that's behind some of our favorite travel and swimwear.
  • The company recently released semi-sheer underwear: the Feel Free Bralette ($18) and Feel Free Underwear ($15) made with a concealed elastic liner and a sustainable, soft bamboo fabric blend.
  • A handful of the women on the Insider Picks team tried the set for ourselves. Our conclusion: It's extremely comfortable, cute, and surprisingly supportive. If it works for you, you'll probably love it. However, fuller cup sizes may find this is too minimal to offer enough support, and the non-adjustable straps may pose an issue for petite women.

When we need to fit the difficult bill of stylish, under-$100 swimsuits or sleek travelwear that's so deceptively comfortable it should be hideous beyond repair, we head to Summersalt.

Founded in May 2017, the online women's clothing startup has been quick to take on the trickiest areas of our wardrobes: swimsuits and the pants and shirts you would voluntarily spend 10 hours of a transatlantic flight in. And, so far, the Insider Picks team has agreed: Summersalt gets difficult right.

The swimsuits are comfortable, flattering, and the site offers enough information to make an informed choice without stepping into a crowded mall on a Saturday morning to do something you hate. The price-point of $95 is also relatively affordable for on-trend swimsuits. In the end, we ranked them the best fashionable swimsuit you can buy, and three reporters left glowing reviews. Their travelwear, on the other hand, is a mixture of silky, weighty material and slimming cuts that make a dead-eyed 5 a.m. airport run feel, if not glamorous, at least completely well-managed. I named their $80 Everywhere Pant part of my airtight travel uniform.

Now, Summersalt has released underwear and bralettes, in what can only be deemed either a heavenly trifecta or a masochistic tempting of the fates. But since the key to company's ability to mass produce universally flattering swimsuits is the 1.5 million body measurements the company took from 10,000 women, you could see how now applying that to underwear may give the company an advantage.

The Feel Free Bralette ($18) and Feel Free Underwear ($15) are pretty pieces made for optimal comfort at the outset. A sustainable bamboo fabric blend provides maximum ventilation and natural antibacterial elements, and a concealed elastic liner keeps things fitted without introducing tough wire. Each come in four great colors: navy, purple, black, and cream. Ideally, you'll be able to wear them at home or throw them in the same section of your closet reserved for comfy travel clothes.

A handful of the women on the Insider Picks team tried the Feel Free Bralette ($18) and Feel Free Underwear ($15) for ourselves. You can find each of our personal experiences below, but the gist is this: It's extremely comfortable, cute, and surprisingly supportive for such sheer material — most of us were pleasantly surprised. If it works for you, you'll probably love it. However, fuller cup sizes may find the bralettes to not offer adequate support, and the non-adjustable straps may pose an issue for petite women.

Here's what we thought of the Summersalt bralette and underwear after wearing them:

Feel Free Bralette, $18

Feel Free Underwear, $15

When in the product description Summersalt says these pieces have a “next to naked feel,” it wasn’t kidding. I could barely feel them on my body since they fit well and are made from semi-sheer, breathable fabric. Since you can see through the bralette and it only offers minimal support, I only wear it at home. I do wear the underwear out all the time because it provides the lightweight, barely-there feel of thongs but the comforting, supportive full butt coverage of styles that are usually way less cute.  — Connie Chen, Insider Picks reporter

Like many of the other testers, I was surprised by how much more supportive the bralette was compared to what I expected of a barely-there, semi-sheer bra without underwire. It sort of molds and holds your shape comfortably and securely, making you a bit more comfortable than wearing nothing at all. I'm a 32DD, though, and I wouldn't recommend relying on this for anything but home and (for me) occasional travel days where I needed a bit more than a tank top with a shelf bra built in. It's silky, breathable, and has just enough support for lounging.

The full-coverage, semi-sheer underwear was a great mix of laidback comfort and allure, too. In terms of lounge and travel underwear (rather than all-day at work) these are a hit for me. — Mara Leighton, Insider Picks reporter

Feel Free Bralette, $18

Feel Free Underwear, $15

When I pulled this set of the packaging, I had pretty low expectations. While super cute at first glance, the underwear looked way too big and the bralette looked so thin I imagined it had to be flimsy. After wearing the pieces, I was very pleasantly surprised — I really love this set.

My favorite of the two pieces is the bralette. The fabric is super-soft on the skin and it fits me really well — the band is breathable, the straps don’t dig in, and it provides just enough support for wearing out. Usually I don’t feel comfortable wearing bralettes for any purposes other than lounging, but I’ve already worn this one in public layered under a dark tee. While it’s obviously not as supportive as an underwire bra, I felt secure wearing it out.

The underwear is super comfortable too, made with the same lightweight, semi-sheer fabric as the bralette. Usually I’m turned off from briefs because all of the fabric can feel restrictive, but the barely-there feel of this pair makes them almost unnoticeable, which is exactly what I’m looking for in undergarments. I can already tell these lightweight pieces will be great for hot NYC summers. — Remi Rosmarin, Insider Picks reporter

I tried the bralette and underwear in black. When I got my order, both items seemed a bit thin. They were light, sheer, and I was worried about durability. When I tried them on, I was surprised at the quality and even more shocked to see how well they fit my shape.

I’ve always struggled to find bras that fit my body (without looking like they came from the juniors section in a department store) but this one did the trick. It looked sophisticated while holding up like any other bralette — making me feel both comfortable and confident.

The underwear was also extremely comfortable and though I wouldn’t wear them to work or out with friends (they aren’t my style), I can certainly see lounging in them while at my apartment. — Megan Foster, Insider Picks intern

Feel Free Bralette, $18

Feel Free Underwear, $15

I tried both the Feel Free Bralette and the Underwear from Summersalt, and I was pleasantly surprised. When I first saw them, I was disappointed because they seemed super cute and super impractical for daily wear. The sheer look and delicate feel are really misleading — the underwear is actually very sturdy, comfortable, and cute looking. I liked the underwear enough that’d I’d wear it in normal day-to-day life, not just at home.

The bralette, as usual, was another story. As a woman with a bigger bust, I need two things from a bralette: adjustable straps and structure, because both give support and keep everything in place. The Summersalt bralette doesn’t deliver on either count. If you have a smaller cup size, it may work, but if you’re 32DD and petite like me, it won’t give enough coverage or support for you to even entertain wearing it. It is very attractive looking, though! — Malarie Gokey, Insider Picks buying guides editor

A startup seeded by Silicon Valley's hottest mentorship program aims to bring the first male birth control to market

Nurx Pill 4

  • A new startup called YourChoice Therapeutics aims to bring the first hormone-free male and female birth control drug to market.
  • The company debuted at a recent demo day hosted by Silicon Valley tech hub Y Combinator.
  • Stacked with researchers from UC Berkeley, the startup has published several basic studies in top-notch science journals.
  • Still, the field of male birth control is a tough nut to crack, and the company faces challenges.

When University of California at Berkeley scientists Polina Lishko and Nadja Mannowetz first dreamt up the idea for a new kind of birth control, they didn't intend to create an option for men. Instead, they aimed to design a women's contraceptive free from the laundry list of negative side effects tied to today's Pill.

But a few years and several published papers later, and they realized the drug they were creating could be taken by both women and men. At a demo day hosted by Silicon Valley tech hub Y Combinator last month, they debuted as a startup called YourChoice Therapeutics.

Although their science is still early, YourChoice's team has created the foundation for a hormone-free method that would prevent pregnancy by robbing a man's sperm of the energy it would need to fertilize a woman's egg. Outside experts call the approach "promising."

The drug would work as a kind of one-two punch, Akash Bakshi, the CEO of YourChoice, told Business Insider.

First, it would prevent hundreds of millions of sperm from swimming to an egg by essentially disabling their main power source — their tails. As an added back-up in case a few crafty sperm find their way to an egg anyway, YourChoice's drug would also disable the drilling action they need to fertilize the egg.

Nurx Pill 1

"The idea is that men and women can take this so a man's sperm will a) not have the energy to get to the egg, and b) if they do get to the egg, they won't be able to drill," Bakshi said.

Because it doesn't contain hormones, the drug would also be free from the side effects linked to current hormone-based women's contraceptives. Those side effects include migraine headaches, weight gain, mood swings, and more. And while no male birth control has yet been brought to market, some of the drugs being studied could come with side effects like erectile dysfunction (ED) and reduced sex drive.

Your Choice hopes to avoid those side effects by steering clear of hormones and crippling sperm activity instead.

"Scientifically their approach is really well-positioned. It's a good target," Logan Nickels, the director of operations for a nonprofit research organization called the Male Contraceptive Initiative, told Business Insider.

'Male options stand to be a game-changer' for the contraceptive field

your choice tx male birth control teamDespite a host of recent innovations from companies like YourChoice and others, the contraception landscape has remained relatively unchanged for nearly half a century. Funding is a major obstacle. Politics plays a role too.

"The contraceptive space has limited funding as it is, and it's been very focused on women for years," Heather Vahdat, the executive director of the Male Contraceptive Initiative, told Business Insider.

"I think the momentum's just picked up on male methods in general," she added.

Mannowetz and her team agree.

"The contraceptive burden has been on women for forever," Mannowetz said. "We're still using the same products our grandmothers used."

But in recent years, a handful of new initiatives have emerged with aims to broaden the landscape and give new options to both men and women.

"These male options stand to be a game-changer," Vahdat said. "It feels like we've finally turned a corner."

Two recent drugs under investigation include a hormone-based male birth control gel that scientists began testing in the US last December. The drug is rubbed daily on the shoulders and would work by reducing sperm count. A pill that works in a similar manner is also being studied. However, both hormonal drugs have been tied with side effects including ED and reduced sex drive. For these reasons and others, Vahdat and Nickels believe a male birth control option is at least 10 years away.

Other researchers are exploring non-hormonal formulations to try and avoid those side effects. Most of them work by disrupting the interaction between the sperm and the egg.

For its part, YourChoice's non-hormonal approach uses small molecules inspired by a drug called lupeol and has published several peer-reviewed studies in journals like Science and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences outlining their basic approach. The company has raised an undisclosed amount that includes seed funding from Y Combinator. In the next few years, it hopes to progress from pre-clinical studies to studies in preparation for clinical trials.

The goal is to have a product on the market within the next eight to 10 years.

"That's one good thing about being an underdog — your leaps are going to be fundamentally game-changing," Vahdat said.

These up-and-coming kitchen startups are using the expertise of famous chefs to help build on the success of their cookware

  • Enthusiastic home cook should keep an eye out on these two online kitchen companies. They're making cookware and kitchen tools so good that they've attracted the attention of well-known chefs.
  • Made In, fresh off a $5 million funding round, now counts restaurateur and "Top Chef" judge Tom Colicchio and Alinea Group cofounders Grant Achatz and Nick Kokonas in its group of advisors. Its American-made pots and pans perform at professional kitchen level, but are surprisingly affordable.
  • Material's resident expert is food magazine contributor and cookbook author Alison Roman. Its sleek, thoughtfully designed kitchen tools reignite excitement in the little things, like spoons and spatulas, and remind cooks that it's okay — maybe even preferable — to dine in at home.

Like a well-oiled kitchen brigade dishing out stunning meal after stunning meal to diners, the success of a startup can never be attributed to a singular person. Carrying out a founder's vision requires a stellar team of product developers, manufacturing partners, marketers, investors, and more.

For kitchen startups, often founded by non-professionals like you and me who simply love cooking and want to have a better kitchen experience, seeking experts to advise on their products provides new perspectives and insights to round out their operations.

Made In, a fast-growing online cookware company founded in 2017, has roped in numerous notable names from the culinary world to advise on product development and offer tips to customers on how to best use Made In's cooking tools at home.

Restaurateur and "Top Chef" judge Tom Colicchio joined Made In in late 2018 as an investor and advisory board member, citing the startup's American-made manufacturing and thorough execution of affordable quality cookware as reasons.

Made In currently sells stainless clad pots and pans, carbon steel pans (now available for pre-order), nitrogen-treated chef knives, and small accessories like its award-winning Universal Lid. We tried its nonstick fry pan (from $69) and saucier ($99) last year and they're still two of our favorite pieces to cook with — strong and sturdy, with great heat distribution and retention, and comfortable to hold. Sealing the deal is the fact they cost about 50%-60% of the price of name-brand products made of the same materials.

Though he has been approached by many different cookware brands over the years, Colicchio says "Made In truly stands out from the pack," and he's even planning to stock his newest restaurant with Made In products.

A recent $5 million seed funding round, led by Bonobos and Trunk Club founder Brian Spaly, brought on Alinea Group cofounders Grant Achatz and Nick Kokonas to the investing and advisory board team. These chefs behind the three Michelin-starred Chicago institution Alinea will also take part in a how-to series for Made In.

The addition of this expertise is a testament to everything Made In has already accomplished in the cookware industry and an exciting hint at what it will bring to the kitchen in the near future.

While Made In prides itself on making products worthy of both the home and professional kitchen, another startup, Material, stays a little closer to the world of home dining and entertaining, and its choice of advisor reflects this leaning.

Alison Roman, the NYT Cooking and Bon Appetit contributor of "Dining In" cookbook fame, has an approachable yet no-sense attitude towards home cooking, making her role as Material's first strategic brand advisor very fitting.

Material specializes in kitchen tools like knives, spoons, and spatulas, bundling them in two essential collections, The Fundamentals ($175) and The Iconics ($245). These multi-functional pieces work hard whether they're being used to slice up fruit for an afternoon snack or create a dinner party feast.

IL Makiage Woke Up Like This Foundation

  • Il Makiage and its foundation quiz offers a smart, easy way for you to find the right base makeup shade for your skin tone.
  • The new PowerMatch algorithm has been more than a year in the making and includes data from 700 different skin-tone combinations.
  • After you take the quiz, you can pay $5 for a full bottle of the Woke Up Like This Flawless Base Foundation in your shade to try out for 14 days. If you love it after the trial, you can keep the foundation for $44, or send it back to the company to be donated to charity.

Trying to find the right foundation that matches your skin tone can feel like rocket science sometimes. Thankfully, there’s a new beauty startup that has a solution and does all the work for you.

Your perfect match won’t be found through Bumble, Tinder, or Hinge, but rather throughIl Makiage, a tech-focused beauty brand that uses machine learning to match your foundation shade to your skin tone all without ever actually seeing your face.

"We want to allow the consumer to avoid buying beauty products offline [with] the use of technology and machine learning,” CEO Oran Holtzman told Business Insider. “We decided to start with the hardest product to match — foundation— and launched the PowerMatch algorithm. The machine learning aspect of the algorithm is constantly improving and refining with each additional customer who takes the quiz.”

Il Makiage’s proprietary algorithm has been more than a year in the making and leverages data from 700 different skin-tone combinations. The result is a quiz that is easy to use from the shoppers' end and surprisingly accurate on the brand's end.

The quiz asks you about your skin tone, texture, and undertones, and once you're done taking it, you'll supposedly get the shade that's right for you. The quiz is free but you can pay $5 to test a full-sized bottle of the Woke Up Like This Flawless Base Foundation in your shade for 14 days, after which you'll be charged $44 if you decide to keep the product. If it wasn't right for you, send it back to the company so it can be donated to the nonprofit Project Beauty Share, which provides beauty products to women in need.

I tried the PowerMatch quiz myself to see just how good a machine can get and I certainly wasn’t disappointed.

Il Makiage Woke Up Like This No. 190

While I’ve taken many foundation tests in my time, I found PowerMatch quiz to be unique in its user friendliness. Even if you know next to nothing about your skin or makeup regimen, the brand can help. You’ll start by answering basic questions about whether you have dry, oily, or combination skin, and what levels of coverage and finish you want. Il Makiage will give you a few understandable yet non-condescending pointers if you’re feeling a bit lost here as well as options to say that you have no idea.

Then you choose between photos of women with skin tones that visually match yours, and indicate your undertones, or use their prompts to help if you have no idea what undertones are. For example, after you say you have pink or cool undertones, the brand will ask if your veins appear to have a blue-ish or purple color, you burn easily in the sun, or look better in silver jewelry. If you answered yes to any or all of the above, chances are you’ve picked your undertones correctly. If none of those applied, then you'll go back to the previous questions.

Once you’ve completed the quiz, it'll show your foundation match which you’ll be able to ship straight to your door for just $5. After all, even with the best of algorithms, the brand recognizes that you have to actually try on your foundation before committing to a full purchase.

It’s only after you’ve had the opportunity to try out your new foundation for 14 days that you’ll be charged the full $44 for the bottle in the shade you were sent. It puts you in a bind if the color isn't right or you didn't like the texture or formula, but I found that my foundation match was exactly what I needed so it was fine for me personally. We’ll have to see if I’m still singing the same tune come summer when I'm about five shades deeper, but maybe I'll do the quiz again then and have a couple of different shades on hand.

The Flawless Base Foundation is super lightweight with vitamin E and hyaluronic acid for lots of hydration, and offers an impressive range of50 shades. Each 1-ounce bottle should last several months with daily use, and at $44, it's a reasonable price for pay for high-quality foundation that actually matches your skin tone.

If you’re looking for a foundation that fits you instead of the other way around,Il Makiage may just be the right place to start your search.

How to connect an iPad to your TV in two different ways

iPad 2018

  • You can connect an iPad to a TV set with an AV (HDMI or VGA) cable. You'll need the appropriate adapter cable from Apple.
  • To connect the iPad, just connect the adapter to your iPad, connect the adapter to your television with the appropriate cable, and switch the TV to the correct input.
  • You can also connect your iPad to a TV wirelessly if you have an Apple TV. To do that, use the Screen Mirroring feature in the iPad's Control Center.
  • On the TV, your iPad might look somewhat low-res because its display is being upscaled to a much larger display, but your iPad will send video and photos to the TV at the best possible resolution.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

It's surprisingly easy to connect an iPad to a television. Once connected, you can project the Home Screen and any app, turning the TV into a giant iPad display.

But you can also use the iPad to deliver high resolution video, effectively turning any TV into a “smart TV.” You can play Netflix,Hulu, or any streaming service from the iPad, or send video and photos stored on the iPad itself to the screen.

There are two common ways to connect your iPad to a TV: via an AV cable, and using an Apple TV device.

How to connect an iPad to your TV with an AV cable

To connect your iPad directly to a TV, you will need an adapter cable that's compatible with the input you have on your TV or monitor. In most cases, that will be an HDMI cable, so you should get a Lightning to Digital AV Adapter from Apple (for older displays, Apple also sells a Lightning to VGA Adapter).

1. Connect the adapter to an HDMI (or VGA) cable.

2. Connect the cable to an input on your television.

3. Plug the adapter to the iPad's Lightning port and turn on the iPad

4. Use the TV's control panel or remote control to switch to the input you just attached the cable to.

That's pretty much it — you should see the iPad's display duplicated on the TV. The Home Screen and most apps will probably look somewhat low resolution (the iPad's resolution is being upscaled to the much larger TV screen) but when you play video, the full resolution of the video will be passed to the TV.

If you'll be using the iPad for a long time, you might want to plug the AV adapter into an AC adapter. This will provide power to the iPad while it's running. You'll need an extra AC adapter and Lightning cable for this, since Apple doesn't include one with the adapter.

How to connect an iPad to your TV with an Apple TV

If you have an Apple TV, the process is actually even easier because there are no cables — it's all wireless, using your Wi-Fi network.

1. Ensure that the iPad is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your Apple TV.

2. Be sure your TV is on and displaying your Apple TV.

3. Open the iPad's Control Center by swiping down from the right side of the screen.

4. Tap Screen Mirroring, and then tap Apple TV.

You should now see the iPad's Home screen mirrored on the TV.

  • Popular online startups like Allbirds, Casper, and Dagne Dover are making their products more accessible by partnering with Nordstrom.
  • Their presence on Nordstrom means you can put them all in the same cart along with your buys from traditional brands, and you'll benefit from Nordstrom's free two-day shipping policy in most cases.
  • We found 25 great startups ranging from clothing to home goods that are now available on Nordstrom.

Though a popular business strategy for new startups today is to sell direct-to-consumer through their own websites, the practice often serves as a springboard for other retail opportunities, not an outright boycott.

Many online startups eventually find their way into popular retail stores that you've been shopping at for years. It's another way to get their products in front of more eyes, plus it's undeniably convenient to shop all your favorites at one site and enjoy free shipping and return perks.

Startups tend to be careful about the traditional retailers they do decide to partner with. They don't want to dilute their brands and they want to reach the right types of customers. Understandably, Nordstrom, with its reputation for curated style and quality, is a popular retail partner for up-and-coming online startups.

On Nordstrom's site, you can shop 25 brands that the internet has been buzzing about for the last few years. They tend towards clothing and shoes, but you'll also find skin care and home products.

LIVELY

Shop Lively bras, underwear, and swimwear at Nordstrom here

If you don't want to spend more than $35 for a good bra, look no further than Lively. It can be hard to feel confident in your skin if your bra is uncomfortable, but Lively nabs the comfort factor (even for much-maligned strapless bras) without sacrificing style.

MVMT

Shop MVMT watches and sunglasses at Nordstrom here

MVMT's sleek watches look a lot more expensive than they are, but have no fear — you can get an automatic watch for $300 and other watches for even less. Grab a pair of its sunglasses to make a powerhouse pair of accessories.

Youth to the People

Shop Youth to the People skin care at Nordstrom here
