How to create a Google doc on your computer or mobile device

google docs app

  • When you create a Google document, or doc, you're making use of one of the best tools available for collaborative work between people in different locations.
  • Using Google docs, you can create documents ranging from essays to resumes to brochures and more, and you and your teammates can edit them in real time.
  • Google docs automatically save themselves every few seconds after new content is added or edits are made, so they dramatically curtail the risk of lost work.

While perhaps the major selling factor of a Google doc is how these online documents allow people to collaborate together on a project from remote locations, the real beauty of a Google dos is how it protects your work from being lost in the event of a computer crash or a human error.

Google docs auto save themselves almost constantly and are backed up to a remote location, so unless you intentionally delete a file, it will never be lost.

If you're working on a report, term paper, or work project you can't afford to lose, consider shutting down Word or Pages and turning instead to a Google doc. You can always copy and paste your work from Google to another program later, but you can never retrieve a document accidentally deleted off your computer.

That said, the chance to share a working document among a number of people is the selling point for most people. You can create a Google doc and later share it with others for editing or additional content, or you can share the document right from the start and work together in real time, actually watching as your colleagues type, edit, revise, and generally work with the copy, images, and other files at play.

Here's how to create a Google doc on your computer or through the Google Docs mobile app.

Create a Google doc on your computer

To make a Google doc on your computer, first make sure you are logged into your Google account. Once signed in...

1. Go to Google.com, your Gmail page, or your Google Drive.

2. Click the Google Apps icon, which is the square formed by nine smaller dark gray squares at the top right of the screen.

google docs

3. Scroll down to the second group of apps icons and find the blue with white stripes "Docs" icon and click it.

docs

4. On the next page, choose the type of document you want to create, and note that most often, you will want to work with the first type, the page with the four color plus symbol with the word "Blank" underneath.

Screen Shot 2019 03 14 at 12.41.14 PM

5. Click on the "Blank" doc and your new Google document opens up.

Screen Shot 2019 03 14 at 12.41.31 PM

Once you've created a Google doc, the first thing you should do is name it by typing a new title into the bar at the top left that will auto fill with the words "Untitled Document." Once that's done, next share it if others are expecting you to do so. Then start writing away!

Create a Google doc on a mobile device

To create a Google doc on your phone or mobile device, you first need to download the Google docs app. The fastest way to find the app is to download it from Apple's App Store or the equivalent app marketplace on your device.

You can also find the app by signing into Google from your mobile web browser and then tapping the Google Apps icon at the top right of your screen. Swipe down and tap the "Docs" icon and you will be brought to a page with a "Download Google Docs" link front and center. Click it, and then get the app.

Once you have the Google docs app on your phone...

1. Open the app to find all of your past documents presented to you.

to

2. To make a new Google doc, hit the multicolored plus symbol at the bottom right of the screen, then tap "New document."

3. Start typing.

To find past docs, use the folder icon at the top right of the app's home screen if you know where they are stored, or search by name with the magnifying glass icon beside it.

  • Kellyanne and George Conway have been married for 17 years and have four kids together.
  • Though they've spent years in prominent circles, the lawyer and former pollster shot to the top of the national political stage when Kellyanne became the first woman to run a successful presidential campaign.
  • But George's public hits on Trump, and vice versa, have painted a picture of a difficult marriage.

Kellyanne and George Conway have been married for 17 years, have four kids together, and have risen to prominence on the national political stage in recent years.

However, as captured in reports like a lengthy feature in the Washington Post, their relationship — from the outside, at least — appears to be under more stress than ever.

Kellyanne, who ran President Donald Trump's campaign and now serves as his counselor, is one of Trump's fiercest and most vocal supporters. While George supported Trump at first, he now publicly trolls the president on Twitter.

On Tuesday, Trump shot back, calling George "A total loser!" on Twitter.

Here is an inside look at one of the most interesting marriages in Washington.

2 former Tumi executives helped launch a startup that lets you customize your luggage down to every last detail — so we tried it out

roamXL

  • There are a lot of things to be excited about when traveling, but luggage usually doesn't make the list.
  • Roam— a startup founded by two former Tumi executives — is changing that by making completely customizable suitcases that match your style, taste, and personality.
  • There are four different suitcase options, which retail for between $450 to $550.
  • I personalized my own Jaunt XL carry-on ($475) and used it while I traveled — it's super light, easy to carry, and I love that it's so unique and easy to identify.

Most of us have just come to accept that what we wear when we travel is less representative of our personal style, and more representative of the functionality we crave for those hours spent on planes, trains, and the like. You'd think by 2019, where suitcases are equipped with batteries and you can customize everything from shoes to curtains, you'd be able to find a luggage option that stands out in a sea of black and navy, without sacrificing the structural integrity necessary to make it through the baggage claim.

If you're looking to add some personality and practicality to your packing game, it's time you check out Roam

Roam was founded with the idea of individuality in mind. While suitcases with more high-tech capabilities seemed to be popping up everywhere, there seemed to be a gaping hole in the market — there were no suitcases that you could really make your own. That's what propelled the brands founders, who count two former Tumi executives among their ranks, to make high-quality luggage that's fully customizable.

Roam offers four sizes of luggage that range in price from $450 to $550: The Jaunt (carry-on size), The Jaunt XL (wide carry-on), The Journey (medium checked bag), and The Globetrotter (large checked bag). Each bag is made with 100% virgin U.S. polycarbonate, a lightweight but sturdy material that wards off scratches and dents. You'll also find a practical, TSA-approved lock fully integrated into the bag, so you don't need to purchase an additional lock. Additionally, every bag includes ergonomic handles and ball-bearing wheels that make rolling the bag down even the most uneven roads a breeze.

For most, the biggest draw of Roam is the endless customization opportunities — there are over 1 million unique color combinations. If you love the idea of personalizing your own bag, but aren't really sure where to start, you can find a selection of designs curated by Roam's own design team — buy them as is, or make a few tweaks to add a personal touch. If you want to make your bag totally your own, you can do that too. Choose from the simple customization or full customization options — simple lets you pick the bag's primary color and accent color, while full lets you customize all nine parts of the bag. No matter what kind of customization you decide on, you can add a monogram to your bag so it's known that it's yours.

The Roam Difference

I got to create my very own Roam carry-on suitcase, and the chance couldn't have come at a better time. My tried and true eBags polyester carry-on was showing its first signs of wear and tear after years of my flagrant overpacking. With a weekend trip looming a few weeks in the distance, I needed something new — something sturdy and simple to take my belongings from point A to point B without any issues. Roam provided all that and then some.

roam

I went for the Jaunt XL ($475), a carry-on that's a little wider than usual for some extra storage space. I took the full customization route, which lets you customize everything down to the stitching. There are eight shell color options available, and even more colors for the smaller details like the zipper and zipper binding. It took me a while to decide just how to personalize the carry-on, after all there are so many choices — and customizing stuff is really fun, so I could have spent another hour just playing around with different colors. Ultimately, I chose to make just about everything on the case pink, except for all-black wheels and a purple monogram patch on the back. I don't even like pink that much, but something about the combination felt right.

The suitcase arrived wrapped in a large dust bag to keep it clean. It's sleek with just enough shine, and I have to admit that the whole monochromatic thing looks really nice, even in a bright color like pink. What surprised me most, though, was the weight. It says this bag weighs 6.2 pounds, but it feels even lighter. When taking weekend trips, I always dread taking the subway because the turnstiles and stairs offer a particularly inhospitable environment for maneuvering heavy luggage around. Roam takes the lug out of luggage, and I don't just mean that in a kitschy way — even when filled to the brim, I could easily lift this bag over the subway turnstile, carry it up flights of stairs, and safely put it in the overhead bin on a flight.

When I had to check my bag, finding it at baggage claim was a breeze — I guess not many people out there have an all-pink suitcase.

Since it's such a bright pink color, I knew it would be susceptible to scratches and stains. There were what looked like stains, but when I got home from my trip I simply wiped the suitcase down with a damp paper towel and it looked good as new.

Bottom Line

Roam may not be the most high-tech suitcase out there, but it's a really high-quality product with a fun option of customization. Plus, everything is made in the USA and shipped straight to your door with no middlemen or extra markups. You'll also get a 60-day trial to give the luggage a test run, and it comes with a five-year warranty in case you encounter any bumps down the road. If you're looking for a travel companion that complements your personal style, Roam is definitely worth a try.

How the Dumas family, heirs to the $49.2 billion Hermès fortune, turned a leather store into a luxury empire and became one of the wealthiest families in the world

Thierry Hermès, an orphan, was skilled with leather — so skilled, in fact, that his main clients in the 19th century were royal families.

Six generations later, the Hermès family — and brand — is now known for its exclusive Parisian fashion house and a $49.2 billion fortune

At the head of Hermès today are two cousins: Pierre-Alexis and Axel Dumas. Both are cochairmen of the brand. In addition, Axel is the CEO, and Pierre-Alexis is the company's creative director, whose father, Jean-Louis, revolutionized Hermès, growing it into an international luxury retailer.

In the fashion industry, Hermès is the ultimate status symbol: Its signature Birkin bag takes more than 25 hours to make, costs up to six figures, and can be seen on the arms of celebrities and princesses.

Take a look at the history of Hermès and the family — which is now one of the richest — that turned it into a fashion powerhouse.

Household cleaning brand Mrs. Meyer's has introduced new body-care products into its lineup — here’s what to buy

Mrs. Meyers soap 1

  • Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day has been making clean household and body-care products for years, and this spring, it's launched two new products and a whole new scent.
  • Here's everything in the new lineup, including what we love.
  • You can purchase Mrs. Meyer's products online at Amazon, Boxed, Jet, Target, Walmart, and plenty of other stores. Grove Collaborative, a marketplace for healthier home essentials, carries all of the new products.

Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day has been an household apartment staple of mine for years.

All of its products — which run of gamut from multi-surface cleaner ($4) and dish soap ($4) to body wash ($8) and bar soap ($4) — are made without bad chemicals like ammonia, chlorine, parabens, and phthalates, and instead use plant-based ingredients like aloe vera and essential oils like geranium and ylang ylang.

The brand also supports sustainable palm oil practices in Asia, Africa, and South America, and all the bottles use at least 25% recycled plastic. For such a big brand, the level of thoughtfulness behind using naturally derived ingredients and practicing sustainability are kind of impressive, which definitely makes me feel good about using its products.

Mrs. Meyer's soap 2

The brand has made body-care products like bar soaps ($4), body washes ($8), and body lotions ($8) for years, and this spring, it's launching two new categories — exfoliating body scrubs ($13) and hand balms ($8) in soothing Lavender and fresh Basil.

"Moving into personal care was a natural progression for Mrs. Meyer's," a brand rep tells Business Insider. "We wanted to deliver that same great clean and great-smelling experience from head to toe."

The body scrubs are made with sugar to exfoliate and shea butter, coconut, grape seed, and radish seed oils to hydrate — but the packaging is what really won me over. Most scrubs I've used come in a big jar, which can get really annoying to scoop out when your hands are wet or worse, slippery because of the formulas' oils. I've had to bid adieu to many a scrub after dropping them in the shower, but this one comes as a convenient squeeze tube so there's no mess. The sugar crystals are also quite small — about the same size as your regular pantry sugar — so exfoliation feels more gentle and effective compared to using a scrub with large crystal sizes. I use this twice a week and concentrate on rough areas like elbows, knees, and feet before following up with the new balm.

The balm is really meant for your hands but I've found it to be effective for any part of your body because it's so concentrated and thick. It includes super-hydrating shea butter and almond and radish seed oils, and a little goes a long way. At 3 ounces, it's small enough to be considered travel-size but can be a little too big for some people to carry every day, so I'd definitely suggest leaving it at your desk or by your bed, which I do.

Mrs. Meyer's soap 3

Because of the thick viscosity, the balm almost feels like a treatment so I'll coat my hands and slip on a pair of cotton gloves overnight for silky-smooth skin the next day. It's been especially helpful on my windburned hands this winter, healing my dry, irritated skin overnight. The Lavender scent is also really calming and soothing, and it helps me unwind.

In addition to the new products, Mrs. Meyer's is also rolling out a whole new scent called Rain Water, which smells like a fresh dewy morning after a rainstorm. It's actually usurped Basil as my favorite scent from the brand and is available in seven products including the bar soap and body lotion. I wish it came as a hand balm too, but here's to hoping Mrs. Meyer's has plans to extend the collection.

cool new stylish backpack startups

  • Backpacks usually tend towards pure style or pure practicality. The perfect one balances both.
  • We found eight online startups making stylish backpacks that can also keep up with your busy daily lives and travels.
  • From under-$100 styles to over-$700 splurges, these backpacks will remind you of the excitement of back-to-school shopping, but with a new, sophisticated twist.

Backpacks have been an extension of our styles and personalities since our grade school days. Shopping for a new backpack before the start of school was one of the highlights of the summer, and if your friend got lost in the sea of students as the bell rang, it was easy to relocate them based on their patterned Jansport or Eastpak (and the bundle of keychains clinging onto the zippers).

We haven't outgrown the practicality of the humble backpack, but we have since developed a taste for elevated style. Several online startups are making cool, stylish backpacks that won't be mistaken for the ones your 10-year-old niece is wearing.

These backpacks are unmistakably made for adults, people who need to comfortably and efficiently carry the essentials of their busy lives with them but would also appreciate if the bag matched their stylish outfit.

They're made from premium materials like leather (both real and vegan), neoprene, and canvas, and they're thoughtfully designed to consider the needs of the modern commuter and traveler. As such, they tend to cost around $100 or more. Unlike your grade school backpacks, however, you won't be throwing these out every year, and you won't want to.

Shop stylish backpacks from eight cool online startups below, and don't forget to check out our guide to the best backpacks you can buy:

Google's new gaming platform launches later this year: here are the games we've seen so far (GOOG, GOOGL)

  • Google announced Stadia, their new video game platform, during their keynote address at GDC 2019 in San Francisco.
  • Stadia will launch later this year; a full list of games hasn't been provided but a handful were shown off during Google's keynote address on Tuesday.
  • Stadia makes use of streaming technology to make high quality video games playable on a variety of devices, including computers, smartphones, and the Chrome Cast.
  • Games on Stadia will have special YouTube integration and unique multiplayer features like State Share and Crowd Play.

Earlier today Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced Stadia, Google's new video game platform. Rather than creating a new console, every game on Stadia will be streamed to players from Google's cloud data centers. That means Stadia will make high quality video games available on any device with the Google Chrome browser, including computers, smartphones, and the ChromeCast.

Google claims that games on Stadia will be able to surpass the graphical quality of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, reaching up to 60 frames per second at 4K resolution when it launches later this year. Google partnered with chipmaker AMD to develop new technology for Stadia's gaming hardware.

Google first tested their video game streaming service in October 2018 with a closed beta service called ProjectStream. The beta test let users play "Assassin's Creed: Odyssey," a $60 game released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, from Google's Chrome browser.

stadia 2x1 controller

Developed by Ubisoft, "Assassin's Creed" is the sort of blockbuster game that would traditionally require a dedicated video game console or gaming computer to play. ProjectStream significantly reduced that barrier to entry; it only required a 25 mbps or faster internet connection and the Chrome browser, controllers were optional. The streaming platform offered the same high quality graphics and gameplay experience as the console versions of the game.

Stadia is due for release in 2019 but only a handful of games were showcased during Google's GDC keynote address. The platform already has the support of popular video game development software like Unreal and Unity, which will make it easier to create games for Google's platform moving forward.

These are the game's we've seen so far:

"Assassin's Creed Odyssey" continues to feature heavily in Stadia content after being included in Google's ProjectStream test last year.

"Doom Eternal" will be coming to Stadia, as announced by Marty Stratton of id Software.

Announced last year for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, "Doom Eternal" will run at 60 frames per second with 4k resolution and HDR on Stadia.

One multiplayer Stadia demo created by Tangent games showed off a destructible urban environment where players could fly freely and use a variety of explosive weapons.

The demo was reminiscent of early demonstrations of Microsoft's "Crackdown 3," which aimed to use cloud technology to make large destructible environments.

How to clear the cache on your Mac computer to make it run more efficiently

$
0
0

laptop

  • When you clear your Mac computer's cached data, you're deleting the temporary media files, like images and text files, that it gathers from the sites you visit.
  • Those files help reduce internet data usage and speed software installation on your Mac. But it's important to clear your cache periodically because it can help protect your identity and make your computer's applications run more efficiently.
  • Luckily, it's easy to get those cached files deleted from your Mac (even if your shortcut buttons aren't working). Here's how.

You may have heard that it's important to clear the cache on your various electronic devices every once in a while. But what exactly is caching, and why do our devices use it?

Cached data consists of the various temporary files that exist on a reserved area of your computer. According to Apple, cached data on your Mac computer speeds up the downloading of Apple software as well as the data users store in iCloud by "saving content that local Mac computers, iOS devices, and Apple TV devices have already downloaded," and cached data is "available for other devices to retrieve without going out over the Internet."

Caching is especially important if your Mac is set up with wired ethernet, rather than relying on Wifi. And you'll get the best performance out of it when it's connected to your network using Gigabit Ethernet, according to Apple.

But as long as your Mac is set up to cache, that data needs to be cleared periodically to make your computer run more efficiently. That's because clearing your cache can help protect your identity, make apps run better on your computer, and prevent you from using outdated forms that your Mac collected when you first visited a site.

Here's what you need to know to get your Mac's cache cleared:

How to clear the cache on your Mac using shortcuts

Shortcuts make the process of clearing your Mac's cache extremely fast and easy. Here's how to do it:

1. Press shift-command-G with your Finder window open.

2. Enter the following command into the search box: ~/Library/Caches

Screen Shot 2019 03 06 at 10.09.15 AM

3. Click "Go." This will bring you to the folder which contains all of your Mac's cached files.

4. Press command-A to select all folders.

5. Click command-delete.

6. You'll get a pop-up asking to confirm that you want to delete all of those files, and you'll need to enter your Mac's password to complete the action.

Screen Shot 2019 03 06 at 10.08.27 AM

Please note: If you have open windows, you will likely still see a folder in there. Otherwise, it should be completely empty.

How to clear the cache on your Mac without shortcuts

If your keyboard is having issues or the command keys just aren't reliable anymore, you can still clear the cache on your Mac. It just takes a little extra time. Here's how to get it done:

1. Close or minimize all windows so that the toolbar at the top of your screen says "Finder."

2. Select "Go," and under that click on "Go to Folder."

Screen Shot 2019 03 19 at 3.28.57 PM

3. Enter the following command into the search box: ~/Library/Caches

Screen Shot 2019 03 06 at 10.09.15 AM

4. Click "Go" to view the folder which contains all of your Mac's cached files.

5. Go back up to the toolbar at the top of the screen and click "Edit" then "Select All."

Screen Shot 2019 03 06 at 10.07.46 AM

6. Under "File," located in the toolbar at the top of the screen, select "Move to Trash."

7. Enter your Mac's password in the action confirmation pop-up to clear your computer's cache.

6 women put Everlane's new $155 Day Loafer to the test — here's how it stacked up

loafers

  • Everlane just released the Day Loafer ($155), a modern take on the classic style with a few upgrades for added comfort, like soft leather, cushioned insoles, and an elastic back for the ease of a sensible slip-on.
  • Six women on the Insider Picks team took the shoes to the streets to see if they really are as comfortable as Everlane says.
  • Overall, we loved the simple, minimalist style of these loafers and found them to be more comfortable than most loafers we've worn, though not the most comfortable Everlane shoes we've ever tried (that honor belongs to the Day Gloves from the same collection).
  • You can find our full reviews below, or go straight to Everlane to get a pair of your own.

The hunt for a pair of sophisticated shoes that feel a lot more comfortable than they look can often be a fruitless attempt. Loafers top the list of classy but uncomfortable, typically boasting too-slim fits, too-tight toes, and soles that feel like you're sliding on a slab of slick ice.

Comfort, style, and simplicity are the trademarks of Everlane's cult-favorite Day Glove flat and equally beloved Day Heel, Day Boot, and Day High Heel. So, when it comes to stylish shoes that keep our feet happy all day long, the women of Insider Picks turn to Everlane for minimalist, easy styles that look and feel great, The brand just added a new member to their Day Family, the Day Loafer— and it's no exception, garnering the same excitement as its predecessors.

Everlane's Day Loafer is a sharp but simple take on the classic. You won't find any crazy design details or hardware, just a classically styled loafer with a few modern upgrades. The five color options — black, dark rose, white, caramel, and pale yellow — are the perfect neutral and light color palette to welcome spring. Each pair boasts 100% buttery-soft Italian leather that molds to your foot, an elasticized back for slip-on ease, and a cushioned insole that your arches will thank you for.

Everlane promises that these smart and stylish shoes can take you from the office out to dinner and everywhere in between, keeping your feet super comfortable while you go about your day, no matter what your day may bring — because we all have more important things to do than tend to blisters on our toes.

At this point, many women on the Insider Picks team have acquired a small army of Everlane shoes— they're all a great balance of function and fashion at a price that actually feels fair. To see if the newest members of the Day Family lived up to the hype, we had to try them out ourselves. Six women on the Insider Picks team got the chance to test the Day Loafer.

Keep reading for our thoughts (which were largely positive) and to learn if these shoes are right for your daily needs.

paleyellow

Connie Chen, reporter: The Day Loafer in pale yellow, $155

I love the feel of the buttery-soft leather featured across the entire Day shoe collection, but I think it makes particular sense for the flat styles like the Day Glove and this Day Loafer because your feet are close to the ground the entire day, and you need that soft, flexible comfort as you walk. I personally wish it had a regular back instead of the elasticized back (which is a little too tight on my heel), but overall the Loafer is still a very comfortable option that feels great the moment you slip it on. I went for the Pale Yellow, a fun spring pastel that’s a little out of my usual color spectrum but manages to look sophisticated when combined with the classic and composed loafer silhouette.

caramel

Sally Kaplan, editor: The Day Loafer in caramel, $155

I love a good loafer, and specifically, I love the way Everlane’s original Modern Loafers look. But I’ve skipped out on buying a pair because I’ve heard the stiff leather back is hard to break in — and who has time for blisters, anyway?

I’m a huge fan of Everlane’s Day shoe collection, so I was really excited to try the new loafer style that featured a similar elastic back to the Day Heels combined with the semi-cushioned sole and buttery leather of the Day Glove.

They did not disappoint my weary feet! Though they run a bit narrow and take a little time to stretch, they’re as soft and comfortable as any pair of flexible suede loafers, while still maintaining the look of a rigid leather pair. I would definitely recommend sizing up if you usually wear a half size (I’m a 7.5 and I went for the 8). I don’t have particularly wide feet, but even after sizing up, they were a little tight when I first put them on (as were the Day Gloves). However, they stretched to fit my feet perfectly after a few hours of wearing them — so I wouldn’t be concerned if you feel like they’re a little small at first.

Some people on our team weren't into the elastic backs on the shoes, but I really appreciate them. I blister easily, and the elastic gives me just enough stretch to feel like I have room to move around in the shoes but not so much that they'll slip off. The soles aren't so cushiony that I feel like I can walk around all day in them on their own, but I put some thin insoles in the shoes and they really improved the comfort level.

I’ll be taking these on my week-long trip to Italy for sure — and I’ll report back afterwards about how they held up for long days of walking.

darkrose

Malarie Gokey, senior editor: The Day Loafer in dark rose, $155

Loafers have always struck me as a more professional-looking type of flat, so I was excited to try out the Everlane Day Loafer. I went with the deep rose color, which looks way more red online than it is in person. I’m actually glad it’s not as red as I thought it would be because I really love a good deep rose color. The leather is super soft and smooth just like it is on the Day Glove. I love the simple, classic loafer look.

I have a few criticisms, though, the first being that I really wish that Everlane hadn’t gone with the scrunchy elastic heel on these. The Day Gloves were phenomenally comfortable because they didn’t have the elastic on the back. I find that the elastic bites into my heels and feels too tight for comfort — it’s the reason I don’t love the Day Heels, either. The second thing I will say is that the sole is very thin, so I doubt they would last very long if you walk in them a lot. I’d personally prefer a slight heel and thicker sole for more durability, support, and a bit of height — even if it’s just an inch.

Quibbles aside, these loafers would make great office shoes because they’re comfortable for short spurts of walking and they look great.

white_dayglove

Remi Rosmarin, reporter: The Day Loafer in caramel, $155

I've always been fairly intimidated by loafers. Maybe it's that for so long the style seemed a little too mature, or that the only cute pairs I could find were $600 — but I'd much rather slip on a pair of slip-ons than a loafer. There are some moments though that call for something a little more sophisticated than a pair of sneakers, but not as formal as a pair of heels. These moments call for something like loafers, shoes that look sharp without trying too hard. We shouldn't have to sacrifice comfort to look put together, and thankfully with Everlane's Day Loafer us ladies no longer have to. The buttery, soft leather molds to your feet in a way that feels like the shoes were made just for you. I found them easy to slip on, off, and walk around in. The minimalist style is perfect to dress up or down, with business casual outfits or ripped jeans and a t-shirt. My only qualm echoes my coworkers, I don't love the elastic band, while tolerable it has moments of digging into my heel which I could definitely do without. Still, I'm hopeful that more wear will stretch them out, and the band won't be as noticeable an issue, because this caramel color is too good to put out of commission, especially with spring on its way.

Mara Leighton, reporter: The Day Loafer in caramel, $155

Everlane combining the immense success of the Day Glove’s buttery soft leather (ie. function) with the beloved but notoriously uncomfortable loafer style (ie. form) is such a good idea that I’m a little mad I didn’t think of it first. I ranked five of Everlane's best-selling shoes by their comfort and the Day Glove was easily the best, while the classic Modern Loafer came in third — and only after some break-in time that was painful on the heels. I loved the look but hated the pain required as a down payment.

The Day Loafer ($155) fixes the issues of the Modern Loafer ($168). And it is, unsurprisingly, a fantastic shoe — as each new addition to the Day family consistently has been.

The loafer style can be dressed up or down, the elasticized back negates painful blisters and break-in time, and the thinner, supple leather will mold to your foot over time like a glove. They're my new go-to travel shoe for airports and light tourist walking days (the cushioned insole is good, though you may need to supplement with insoles if you're planning a heavy day of walking/need more support). I suspect they will be used nearly as frequently as the Day Glove in my closet — and for more months of the year than flats can be worn.

The caramel is true to the color online, if not slightly lighter in person. I stuck with my true size (I sized up a half-size for both the Day Glove and the Modern Loafer) and am happy I did thanks to the glove-like fit that will likely mold to the shape of my foot even more over time. Having said that, my feet are relatively narrow, and Everlane suggests you do go up a half size. If you're considering it, you should.

The only thing I would note is that if you're comparing the Modern Loafer to the Day Loafer, you are getting different leathers and, obviously, slightly different styles. The Day Loafer ($155) has a more versatile, casual aesthetic and a glove-like buttery soft leather. The Modern Loafer ($165) is made from thicker, more substantial leather (hence the break-in period) and a more structured, architectural look.

  • The Economist Intelligence Unit recently released its annual report calculating the cost of living across cities worldwide.
  • The report lists the top 10 most expensive cities, including a three-way tie for the No. 1 spot between Singapore, Paris, and Hong Kong.
  • The report also compares city prices for food and drink items, including the average price of one 330 ml bottle of beer.

Three cities currently share the title of most expensive city in the world — Paris, Hong Kong, and Singapore — and, across those cities, the average price for a beer ranges from $1.77 and $2.27.

That's according to the Economist Intelligence Unit's Worldwide Cost of Living Report, which uses over 400 prices across 160 different products and services — including food and drink — to calculate rankings. Among these products is the average cost of a bottle of beer (330 ml).

Some cities, such as Copenhagen— home to major brewing company Carlsberg — saw price drops when compared to last year's average prices. New York, meanwhile, led the charge with the highest price per beer bottle.

Keep reading for a look at the cost of beer in 10 of the most expensive cities worldwide, along with some of the areas' best-known breweries. All prices are in USD.

New York, USA: $3.33

City ranking by cost of living: 7 (tied with Copenhagen and Seoul)

New York has the highest price per bottle. The city is known for its breweries, and while many are upstate, several are located in the city area. Brooklyn especially is infamous for new pop-ups — including Circa Brewing Company and Five Boroughs Brewing Company — along with Williamsburg's Brooklyn Brewery, which was established in 1988. Overall, the price of beer in New York changed only eight cents, rising from last year's price of $3.25.

6 inexpensive products I use to give myself a salon-grade manicure at home

SinfulColors finished manicure

  • Getting a professional manicure once a week would cost a minimum of $40, or about $480 a year.
  • I put together a list of six products I use at home to get salon results, all of which last me at least six months, some even longer.
  • My routine involves a simple nail file and buffer block, base coat, nail polish color, and top coat— with a cuticle product recommended to me by a coworker as a bonus. All of these products cost less than $30 total.

My friends and coworkers are always asking me where I get my nails done, and they're totally shocked when my response is that I do them at home. I prefer to have my nails painted at all times and I tend to put a fresh coat on every week (or every other week if I'm feeling lazy). I'm being totally honest when I say I only treat myself to a manicure and pedicure once a year for my birthday.

If I went to a nail salon on a weekly basis and paid for a $10 manicure, I'd be spending $40 a month or $480 a year — and honestly, that's a low-balled estimate. I live in New Jersey so expect those prices to be higher if you live in New York or another city. On top of that, who has an hour or two every week to get pampered? I wish, but I'm not a Real Housewife.

On top of that, I prefer to paint my nails dark colors like black cherry, midnight navy, and even black, so it's painfully obvious when my polish starts to chip. I've tried different brands of nail polish and gimmicky products to make my nails last through the week and I've finally cracked the code — including a quick drying top coat that's my secret weapon.

Trust me when I say you'll only need these six products to give your natural nails a salon-grade manicure at home — and at under $30 total, they won't break the bank.

A nail file

Trim Salon Board (two-pack), available at Target for $1.19

Now I know what you're thinking: It's just a nail file, they're all the same. Well, no — not entirely. There are actually several types of nail files, but the most common one is an emery board. Depending on the type of nail (natural or artificial), you'll need to use different grit levels.

The lower the grit level, the coarser the file, and conversely, the higher the grit level, the smoother it'll be. For artificial nails, a grit level of 100 should be used, while natural nails tend to require a grit level of 180.

The Trim Salon Board is designed for multi-use. One side of the board has a medium grit, while the other side has a coarse grit. They are also attached to a thick and sturdy board, so you don't need to worry about snapping it in half as you file away.

I only use the Trim Salon Board on the edges of my nails to shape and file them, never on the surface to buffer and smooth. I use a basic buffer, listed in the slide below, to smooth the tops of my nails before applying polish.

A nail buffer block

Tweezerman 4-in-1 File, Smooth, & Shine Block, available at Amazon for $8.30

After you've filed the edge of our nails (which, by the way, you can use one side of this block for), it's time to buffer the tops of them so your nail polish goes on smooth. I'm guilty of committing the age old sin of nail biting, so thin layers of my nail protein peel off and make my natural nails look flaky.

I really should stop biting my nails, but it's harder than it seems and it's way easier to spend two minutes buffing my nails anyway. This Tweezerman block has really helped clean up the damage that I've done to my nails by removing all of the flaky nail protein and restoring the surface of my nails.

This block comes with four sides: a file, a buffer, a smoother, and a shiner. While I really only use the buffer and smoother side, this four-in-one block is the only tool you need to use prior to applying nail polish.

To use:

Step 1: Use the file side to shape and file down your nails.

Step 2: Use the buffer side to remove any flaky and uneven bumps from the entire nail.

Step 3: Use the smooth side to remove any other finer imperfections from the new nail surface.

Step 4: Use the shine side to give your nails a salon-finish shine. Now you're ready for polish.

The best thing about this Tweezerman block is that it comes with replacement pads. It makes the product last longer, and you don't need to worry if you've out-used your buffer but your file is still going strong.

An inexpensive base coat

First Base by Essie, available at Amazon for $4.49

A base coat is important to use because it preps the nail surface so that the nail polish goes on smooth and protects your natural nail from getting stained by your polish color. A good base coat helps bond your polish of choice to your nail to further prevent chipping.

Like I mention in the next slide, I won't spend more than a few bucks on a nail polish color, but a base coat is a little different. For this, I trust First Base by Essie and think their base coat is worth the money spent for the results I get.

I apply just a thin layer to protect my natural nail. Personally, I avoid applying too much of this base coat because I don't want a ton of paint layers on my nails (one layer of base coat, two layers of polish color, and one layer of top coat).

One Amazon user stated, "[...] ever since I started using the Essie base coat ... it has protected my nails and made even the cheapest nail polish go on smoother and keeps them from staining my nails."

12 facts that show why bottled water is one of the biggest scams of the century

hiker drinking bottled water in desert

  • Nearly 780 million people worldwide do not have access to a source of clean water (water that flows through a household connection, borehole, well, or protected spring).
  • In the US, 99.2% of the country has access to clean tap water, but many Americans chose to drink bottled water instead due to concerns about poor taste and contamination
  • Bottled water and clean tap water are virtually identical in terms of purity and taste. In a 2011 study, only one-third of blind taste-testers could correctly identify tap versus bottled water.
  • Unlike tap water, however, producing bottled water is an expensive, resource-heavy process that requires crude oil and extra water.

There's nothing quite like the feeling of a pure, ice-cold drink of water.

While some Americans get water from the tap, the rest pay for the bottled variety — at a cost of $100 billion a year.

The average cost of a gallon’s worth of single-serve bottled water in the US is nearly $9.50, according to FoodandWaterWatch. That's nearly three times more expensive than the average price for a gallon of milk, and almost four times the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline. Bottled water costs nearly 2,000 times more than tap water, which costs less than a cent per gallon.

Many people assume that the higher price tag is justified by the health benefits of bottled water, but in most cases, that's not true.

This year's World Water Day falls on March 22 — the day is meant to draw attention to disparities in clean-water access around the globe. Worldwide, 780 million people don't have access to a source of clean water.

But for the vast majority of Americans, tap water and bottled water are comparable in terms of healthiness and quality. In some cases, publicly sourced tap water may actually be safer, since it is usually tested more frequently, Plus, bottled water is more likely to be contaminated by microplastic particles than tap water.

"It is wrong to assume that bottled water is somehow cleaner, healthier, or safer than tap water in the US," Peter Gleick, an environmental scientist and the co-founder of the Pacific Institute, told Business Insider.

There are exceptions, however: Water that comes from people's private wells do not see the same rigorous testing as those whose water comes from public sources. And, as was the case Flint, Michigan, some public sources are not properly screened.

Nonetheless, there are plenty of reasons for most people to stop shelling out for bottled water. Here's what to know.

SEE ALSO: Bottled water is a scam for most Americans, but a new report reveals some surprising places where it's dangerous to drink the tap

The first documented case of bottled water being sold was in Boston, Massachusetts in the 1760s. A company called Jackson's Spa bottled and sold mineral water for "therapeutic" uses.

Companies in Saratoga Springs and Albany also packaged and sold water.

Americans consume more packaged water overall than people in any other country in the world except China.

Across the globe, people drink roughly 10% more bottled water every year. On a per-capita basis, the US ranks number six in bottled water consumption.

Today, Americans today drink more bottled water than milk or beer. Each person consumes roughly 39 gallons of bottled water annually.

It takes more than just diet and exercise to be healthy.

I asked experts and entrepreneurs in health-related fields, as well as average people, what they do to get healthier. Their answers ranged from meditating to journaling to simply spending more time outside.

Here are the best tips I got on how to be healthier.

DON'T MISS: 7 times you should buy the Walmart house brand — and 6 times you should skip it

Prioritize sleep and your sleep cycle

Sleep deprivation can be as undermining to your health as malnutrition.

"Besides making you irritable, anxious, depressed, impulsive, and accident-prone, it causes inflammatory changes in the body, promoting heart disease and even stroke,” Harvey Karp, CEO of the health company Happiest Baby, told Business Insider.

"Lack of sleep undermines your metabolism, pushing you towards obesity and even pre-diabetes. It’s incredibly important that you prioritize getting ample sleep every night."

Take care of your mental health

Sometimes one of the best things you can do to be healthier is to do less.

"Therapy can be a really helpful way to proactively do less, creating space in your week to withdraw from the noise of your life and check in with yourself," Harry Ritter, founder and CEO of Alma, a co-working space for therapists, told Business Insider.

"Physical wellness and mental wellness are inextricably linked, so when you work on your mind, you're working on your overall health."

Prep your meals — and your snacks, too

Meal prepping can be a great way for busy people to eat healthy and when it’s done right, can help save food, money, and the environment in the process.

However, it’s not always done right.

"It often leads to wasted food — and all of the money, water and energy it takes to get it to our plates — because it can be difficult to get portions and storage right," Elizabeth Balkan, the food waste director at the Natural Resources Defense Council, told Business Insider. "And by the end of the week, sometimes we’re just plain sick of eating the same thing."

She suggests using apps and digital tools like Meal Prep Mate to get portioning, shopping lists, storage, and recipes on point.

In tandem with that, know your weak moments.

“Whether it’s 4 p.m. or 11 p.m., know the moments of the day when you crave things that you know aren’t good for you and plan ahead,” Claire Olshan, founder of the health-food company DADA Daily. "Everyone is always so obsessed with meal plans, but it’s important to also be obsessed with snack plans."

Bill Gates is worth $100 billion and he plans to give most of it away — here's how he spends his money now, from a luxury car collection to incredible real estate

  • Bill Gates' net worth is officially $100 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaire index.
  • That makes him $24 billion richer than he was five years ago, and puts him in a two-man club with Jeff Bezos, reported Business Insider's Julie Bort.
  • While he indulges in a few luxuries, they make up only a fraction of his fortune.
  • He mainly spends his billions on charity through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and plans to give away most of his fortune.

Bill Gates is getting richer and richer — his net worth is worth over $100 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaire index. He's $9.5 billion richer than he was one year ago and $24 billion richer than he was five years ago, reported Business Insider's Julie Bort.

That puts Gates, the cofounder of Microsoft and the world's second-richest person, in a two-man club of people worth more than $100 billion with Jeff Bezos, wrote Bort.

It's hard to imagine what to do with that amount of money, but Gates knows how to make the most of it. While he has some indulgences — like a Washington estate worth $125 million, a private airplane, and a luxury-car collection — they make up only a fraction of his massive fortune.

He and wife, Melinda, previously said it's unfair they're so rich. Instead of spending billions on themselves, they often donate it to charity through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. They've also pledged to give away most of their fortune through the Giving Pledge, which they launched in 2010.

See how Gates spends his billions.

Ian Schrager, the cofounder of Studio 54, says the legendary NYC nightclub could be recreated today — but it would be different in 3 key ways

  • Ian Schrager, the cofounder of legendary nightclub Studio 54, says the club could be recreated today with a few adjustments.
  • Studio 54 was a New York City club known for its wild parties in the early 1970s and '80s and for attracting high-profile guests like David Bowie and Andy Warhol.
  • Schrager told Business Insider the club would need to take advantage of new technology with more sophisticated visual effects and virtual reality, and that the club probably couldn't be in the same location.
  • "I think it would be much, much more immersive than it was back then," Schrager said.

Studio 54, the legendary nightclub known for its wild parties and high-profile guests like David Bowie and Andy Warhol, was the pinnacle of New York City nightlife in the 1970s and early '80s.

For some, Studio 54 was a phenomenon that could never again exist. Writer Mick Joest described it as "one of those unique places that came around at the right place and right time, and nothing like it will ever happen again."

But for Ian Schrager, who cofounded Studio 54 with Steve Rubell, that's not necessarily the case.

"I'm not one of those that think that a place like Studio 54 couldn't be recreated today, even though it's 40 years later and it's in a different time," Schrager told Business Insider.

But there would need to be a few key adjustments, he said, primarily to take advantage of new technology.

"It would be much, much more sophisticated with the visual effects and virtual reality and the LED lights," Schrager said. "I think it would be much, much more immersive than it was back then. But it would still do the same thing. It would still try and make people very excited and enhance their dancing and all of that."

Schrager pointed to today's concerts as an example.

"Look at the rock concerts today compared to the rock concerts 40 years ago," he said. "They're more sophisticated, there's more technology, there are more special effects. But essentially, you get the same DNA."

The main issue with recreating a club today in the style of Studio 54 would be finding the right location, Schrager said. The original Studio 54 was in Manhattan's theater district, just a few blocks from Times Square.

In those days, someone could have opened a nightclub anywhere, but finding a location today would be trickier, Schrager said.

"It would have to be a neighborhood with not a lot of neighbors," he said. "Because it seems like in a city like New York, the neighbors don't have a lot of patience for the kinds of thing that come with a great nightclub. So that's changed."

Another major difference would be the cost of opening a similar club today.

"Now, it's very difficult and the regulations have changed," Schrager said. "I did my first nightclub with $27,000. Studio 54 cost $400,000."

Today, with new rules and safety regulations, you can count on spending "at least a million or so dollars before you put the first coat of paint on," he said.

Despite new technologies and other changes in the nightlife and hospitality industries over the years, the basic human desires that Studio 54 aimed to fulfill have stayed the same, Schrager says.

"We have all of these things with technology that have changed, but I don't think the human condition changes," Schrager said. "I don't think the urge to socialize and meet people and interact with people, I don't think that has changed over thousands of years. I still think appealing to those human conditions and human urges is still the formula for success."

  • Dai is a new women's workwear brand founded by a former finance executive who wanted smart, comfortable, and high-quality closet staples without the traditional luxury price tag.
  • Like the technical workwear brands we already love (ADAY, Athleta, MPG Sport, and MM.LaFleur), Dai combines sleek, stylish silhouettes with properties of activewear — stretchy, breathable, wrinkle-resistant, and machine-washable.
  • Its pieces aren't exactly cheap (prices range from $175-$475) but that's because they're made from eco-certified materials with top-quality materials and precise construction, and in limited quantities.
  • We tried some of its top sellers, including tops, trousers, and blazers, and were very impressed with the feel of the fabric and versatility of the pieces.

When you put on a dress or suit from new women's workwear startup Dai, you feel like a thousand bucks. If you were shopping at a luxury European brand, that's also about how much you'd have to pay for your shiny new outfit.

Founded by former JP Morgan executive Joanna Dai, Dai is making sleek women's workwear that you'd expect to cost much more, especially for how well-constructed and comfortable it is. It's one of a growing number of direct-to-consumer brands in the last few years that is finally putting an end to the laborious search for more affordable, high-quality workwear.

Coming from eight years in the finance world, Dai developed a smart and polished style that was further nurtured through living in New York and London. The comfort and casual ease at the heart of growing up in California, however, was a glaring component missing from her workwear shopping experience.

She thought about the qualities of the pieces she loved most in her wardrobe — timeless, beautiful fit, and well-made — and brought them to the designs at Dai. To be clear, they are still investment pieces, ranging from $175 pants to $475 blazers, but every one of your hard-earned dollars is going towards a purpose, including eco-certified raw materials, luxe, technical fabrics, and precise, elegant tailoring.

Dai tells Business Insider, "Finding the right suppliers to partner with was pivotal for the product and the brand, and we were uncompromising in our approach, so we tested ten different factories just within our first year."

Having tried similar technical workwear from brands like ADAY, Athleta, MPG Sport, and MM.LaFleur, we're convinced that technical fabrics are the best innovation to happen to women's workwear.

Usually reserved for athleticwear, they feature properties of stretchiness, wrinkle resistance, and breathability. These all convert cleverly into other parts of life. Even if we're not increasingly active throughout the day, we at least want to be comfortable, whether we're sitting down all day or constantly bouncing between calendar events.

Dai's dresses, pants, blouses, and blazers are stretchy, soft, and breathable. They're also wrinkle-resistant, quick-drying, and machine-washable, but they don't look like the running top or yoga pants it sounds like we're describing. Its pieces, made by pattern cutters with more than 30 years of experience, are structured and cut precisely, with clear attention paid to fit and detail.

You can shop these beautiful pieces of workwear on Dai's site, where eye-catching colors like red, plum, and forest green share the stage with versatile neutrals like black, gray, and white. Its simple styles will be wearable and relevant all year round, but you won't tire of wearing them since they're easily mixed and matched and can be accessorized in many different ways.

If the founder could only choose one outfit from the collection, she told Business Insider:

"I'd pick the original full suit look, which comprises of the Trail Blazer, Power Move Pants and Now and Forever Blouse. Not only is it incredibly comfortable, it’s a power suit that establishes a sense of effortless confidence, as if it were (very comfortable) armor.

Worn separately, I think each standalone piece is incredibly adaptable and powerful. The Trail Blazer, inspired by the classic Le Smoking jacket in terms of its clean cut and longer tuxedo length, can also be worn over jeans for a polished day look, or with a dress and heels for an evening event. The blouse is a timeless classic, and the trousers are your feels-like-yoga, tailored go-to for everything."

The pieces she mentions are a good place to start while shopping at Dai (the Power Move Trousers sold out no less than five times in just over a year). Some other styles that caught our eye are the Power Line Skirt, with its front side vent and invisible pockets, and the Squared Away Dress, a modern geometric take on the classic black dress.

The UK-based brand does follow the UK sizing chart, so add four to your usual size to get your Dai size. For the best fit, we recommend measuring yourself and following the size chart on its site, or emailing wegotyou@daiwear.com

We had a chance to try out a few workwear pieces from Dai. You can find our thoughts on styles from this up-and-coming women's workwear brand below.

Now and Forever Blouse

Now and Forever Blouse 2.0, $175, available at Dai

The technical stretchy jersey fabric Dai uses in its Now and Forever Blouse is like nothing I’ve ever touched before. It’s super soft, perfectly smooth, breathable, and stretchy — it looks impeccable, and I wish more of my clothes were made from this fabric. The cut of the shirt is also unique with its wide, stiff cuffs that bell out gracefully and fold up nicely; the subtle black silk tie that you can wear any way you wish; and the classic blue and white color combination. It felt so comfortable when I put it on, I forgot I was wearing a fancy dress shirt.

I have two criticisms, though, one being the price, which is sky-high at $175, and the other being the length — this shirt is not made for petite women. The sleeves are about three inches too long on me, so I had to fold them up and the length is also too long even when tucked. In other words, petite sizing would be very, very welcome! —Malarie Gokey, Insider Picks senior editor

The Now and Forever Blouse is up there with Ministry of Supply’s Easier Than Silk button-up and MPG’s now sold-out Milano Technical Dress shirt for the best work shirts I own. And, to its credit, it’s readily available as well, while those other two fluctuate widely in inventory. It’s also considerably more stylish.

I wish it wasn’t $175, but if that’s not a deal-breaker for you, you should be really happy with the purchase. The stretchy technical jersey is supple and cool to the touch, and it drapes beautifully, plus it tucks into pants and skirts without adding bulk. The detachable bowtie, contrast cuffs and collar, and mother of pearl buttons are all great style upgrades to the classic office blouse. The back yoke panel and box pleat — combined with the stretchy jersey — create a better fit on my 5’7 frame than nearly all non-custom blouses I own. I often choose to wear it on days that end in happy hour because it translates well to after-hours.

All in all, it’s expensive, but if you choose to swing it, it’s likely to become a hero style in your work lineup. —Mara Leighton, Insider Picks reporter

Power Move Trousers

Power Move Trousers 2.0, $225, available at Dai

Dai’s Power Move Trousers are a sleek, streamlined pant, of which the tailoring and thick, technical fabric is very flattering on. Overall, they look and feel great, and $225 — while not ideal — is in the ballpark of similar (and thinner) options I have loved. My only complaints are that I wish they were a tiny bit longer on my 5'7" frame (a common complaint for me) or that they were offered in a hi-rise silhouette. —Mara Leighton, Insider Picks reporter

I usually dread putting on work pants because there's no way something that looks so tapered and crisp can be comfortable. The Power Move Trousers are a rare exception. They have a bit of stretch at the waist and sit comfortably above the hips so nothing's squeezing out as I sit at my desk, and the fabric feels delightfully smooth on my legs. I have them in Midnight, a dark blue that's deeper and more sophisticated than most navy work pant styles Connie Chen, Insider Picks reporter

Trail Blazer

Trail Blazer, $475, available at Dai

I love the fit and feel of this blazer, which you can tell the moment you shrug it on was made with both style and mobility in mind. While weighty and on the thicker side, it's surprisingly breathable and you won't overheat as you transition through the various locales of your day.

The shoulder pads aren't overly bulky (which is traditionally a problem for my broad shoulders), and every edge is cut sharply, all in all contributing to a clean and flattering silhouette. If you want to roll up your sleeves, the slit cuffs make it easy to do so. Otherwise, the slits serve as stylish accents to the sleeves. The beauty of this classic blazer style is that it goes well with the Power Move Trousers if you want a matching outfit, but you can also use it to dress up a pair of jeans.—Connie Chen, Insider Picks reporter
